usinesses, artists, thespians, chefs, theatre companies, musicians, humanitarians, environmental groups, media: They’re all recognized as the town’s best hot shots in encore’s annual reader’s poll—a poll that has been taking place well over 25 years in Wilmington. To put it simply: We hold the official “Best Of” moniker. We culled over 20,000 voices to weigh in on their thoughts about the Best Of Wilmington. Nominations opened in midNovember 2014 and closed in mid-December 2014, before final voting opened mid-December and closed mid-January 2015. All voting was done by the community-at-large through our online voting system, featuring over 130 categories. We try to be as fair as possible, and while we encourage local businesses and groups to campaign so their patrons/fans vote for them, we do lay a few ground rules in campaigning practices: 1) No stuffing the ballot box! That means you can’t vote under multiple email addresses or encourage customers and employees to do so. 2) No voting on someone else’s behalf. If you have a list of email addresses that don’t belong to you, please, don’t fill out ballots in their names. 3) Do not entice patrons/fans into voting for you by offering specials, discounts or

prizes in exchange for votes. After voting closed, we threw our annual Best Of Party and fundraiser at Brooklyn Arts Center on February 28, which benefitted DREAMS of Wilmington—a local nonprofit and multidisciplinary arts program for at-risk youth (www.dreamsofwilmingon.org). Thanks to 550 tickets sold, numerous raffles, a Best Of Battle of the Bands, and a live text-to-donate program, DREAMS raised more than $11,000 and took in $7,200 after expenses. The money allowed them to accept 45 students into their three-week summer intensive arts program. Our Best Of hosts, comedy troupe Pineapple-Shaped Lamps, entertained with a plethora of sketches across every category of award-winners—all set to a “Back to the ‘80s” theme. Aside from nailing spot-on impressions of “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures,” they ensured audiences were rolling in laughter during their “Flashdance” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart” interpretive dance numbers. And a bonus: Those funny Pineapple kids also got to know DREAMS’ students via videos they made for the show. More so, they will be volunteering with DREAMS this summer! We laughed a ton and stuffed ourselves silly, thanks to food passed around

throughout the evening—all provided from our numerous nominees in the food and beverage categories. We danced the night away with DJ KB spinning everything from “Under Pressure” to “Rich Girl,” and especially to the bands L Shape Lot and The Midatlantic, who were duking it out for final votes during the ceremony as Best Band. While L Shape Lot came out on top, it did not deter the camaraderie between these Americana/bluegrass acts. They closed out the night in a finale together with “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” As well, DREAMS music teacher Laura McLean and her band the New Riders of Calamity took the stage and killed it, especially with a smokin’ rendition of “She Bop.” Blueberry Creative caught all the fun on film, and their pictures can be seen throughout this book. Folks came dressed to the nines in ‘80s gear, including our crowned king and queen—as picked by TJ Dunn, founder of Wilmington Fashion Week, and judged by audience applause. Christian Podgaysky as Boy George and Stacia Sylvester donned all the right classics from the era, acid-wash jeans and fanny pack included. Congratulations, Best Of Wilmington class of 2015!

PLACE TO BUY A NEW CAR

Stevenson Automotive Group Stevenson Honda 821 S College Rd. • (910) 395-1116 Stevenson Kia and Stevenson Mazda 6103 Market St. • (910) 350-1650 With 16 wins to their name, Stevenson Automotive once again prevailed as the best local biz to buy a new car. The Stevenson family found their footing in 1932, and their passion has carried over throughout the decades, as they’ve sent numerous folks off with a new set of wheels. With so many websites dedicated to helping buyers find the right car, general manager for 20-plus years Pat Koballa maintains keeping up with the times and having well-informed staff has been key to their continued success.“We know we have done our job when we exceed our clients’ expectations,” Koballa declares. Hondas, Acuras, Chevorlets, and more line their lots, and each car has a lifetime warranty at no additional cost. As well, the first tank of gas is on the house. They offer loaner cars or shuttle services when someone’s car is in for maintenance, and pick-up and delivery services for people with tight schedules. Customers also can bring their car in for service, whereupon they will receive a free exterior wash every time. Shoppers in the military receive a 10-percent discount, and all customizable accessories also come at 10-percent off for everyone. Koballa hints that 2015 will be a huge year for the dealership, partially because of Wilmington’s ever-growing community and the sheer volume of new technologies found in cars these days. “Technology on four wheels,” Koballa says. Though success has found Koballa, he still retains gratitude and humility from his supportive Port City residents. “It is great to be part of a thriving community, and it is rewarding when our local community chooses us a their auto dealer,” he concludes.

For the past 15 years, winner of Best Place For Alternative Medicine, McKay Healing Arts, has been offering excellence in alternative approaches to health and healing. Whether patients face fertility issues, which can be aided through a mind-and-body approach through acupuncture and massage, or need urgent care for acute pain, McKay offers an array of safe, natural solutions. They encourage all clients to share their experiences and success with their physicians. Slowly but surely, more local knowledge about alternative healing is spreading throughout the community: Local M.D.s are even giving direct referrals nowadays to help patients with a collaborative approach to combatting various ailments. “Many people come to us after they have exhausted traditional approaches to illness or pain,” owner Leon McKay details. “It is extremely gratifying to see them achieve results when nothing else has helped. It excites us to be able to introduce people to therapies that utilize the body’s natural healing ability— an ability that has been de-emphasized in our current culture.” McCay Healing Arts has online scheduling, adding to the convenience for customers. Saturday massage hours have been a popular service, so much so, they added acupuncture hours every other Saturday as

well. Their manual lymph-drainage massage therapy has become a much-sought-after practice. Looking toward 2015, they will be focusing more on their garden-studio space, which is utilized for workshops and educational programs. “[It will] include reiki training in various levels where practitioners can obtain CEUs for their licensing,” McKay informs. Praise from the community keeps the McKay staff focused and encouraged to continue making Wilmington a healthier place to live. “Acknowledgement from locals is what matters most,” McKay says. “They are the people we serve. In the past when clients have seen our encore awards displayed, their choice in coming to us for service has been reinforced, increasing their trust. We actually picked up a couple of clients from the Best Of publication released last year.”

Shops, declares. “A business is everchanging and always growing, and your customers always come first!” With an attitude like that, it’s no surprise her gift shop on Racine Drive has been thriving for 15 years. 2015 marks their seventh win on our reader’s poll. When Blue Moon opened, there was no precedence for such an establishment locally: a place that houses multiple arts and business vendors, so shoppers get an immersion into handcrafted items. Essentially, Blue Moon is like Etsy but live, with personal service, and even more localized items, thanks to the numerous crafts-people who showcase their works. Blue Moon’s 8,500 square-feet are stocked with jewelry and furniture from purveyors like Coasts Boutique, Marlene McDonald Jewelry, Sinead’s Cottage, and Old School Wood Works. A host of always current and trending items, and diligent customer service, have been the number one consistencies that keep folks coming through their doors. “We pride ourselves on customer service,” Masucci says. “For example, we have never charged for gift wrapping. We provide it free all year long. We listen to our customers’ needs and strive to accommodate their requests.”

As well, Blue Moon Gift Shops comes complete with a gallery, dubbed “Eclipse.” Containing locally made goods, like sculptures, paintings, pottery, and more, it took home the gold for Best Art Gallery in 2014. “The support of our customers is what continues to drive us,” Masucci concludes. “We are honored and humbled each year that we have won.”

PLACE TO BUY A USED CAR

Auto Wholesale 6003 Market St. • (910) 792-6100 www.autowholesalenc.com From Audi to Ford, from sedan to SUV, Wilmington’s spoken, and the Best Place To Buy a Used Car goes to Auto Wholesale. Open since 2003, owner and manager Paul Tracy upstarted the biz with the mindset to make buying a car enjoyable. Marred by stereotypes of pushy salespeople and “lemons,” it is Tracy’s goal to ensure that’s not the experience for folks buying a preowned car at his establishment. Acknowledgement for the service obviously means a great deal to Tracy and validates the hard work he puts into pleasing customers. “Doing things right and hard work really pays off,” Tracy says. “You need to stay updated on new technology, social media, [and] what the customers want.”

With financing available as low as 1.9 percent, rolling off the lot in that gently used car won’t break the bank. As well, they offer an ASE certified tire and service center to ensure their cars stay in tiptop shape. They assist with oil changes, alignments, 30k-, 60k-, and 90k-mile services, A/C work, and NC state inspections. As well, having great deals on just-like-new cars and treating customers right doesn’t hurt either. Staying with the times, Internet has proved crucial in heightening their business’s growth. As the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding: Their easy-to-navigate website boasts a complete list of their cars, with an easy to use search bar. “It is the best way to advertise and stay active on what is sold and what has just arrived,” Tracy tells. Improving their already solid status and possibly expanding their business will be on the agenda for 2015. “I Love Wilmington, NC,” Tracy says. “We live in a great city, and it continues to grow! Word of mouth and our reputation are really paying off greatly for Auto Wholesale.”

HEALTH FOOD STORE

Whole Foods Market 3804 Oleander Dr. (910) 777-2499 www.wholefoodsmarket.com For Whole Foods Market, the link between health and food is clear, especially considering that numerous chronic diseases in America are diet-related. “In most cases, these diseases can be prevented, reduced and often times reversed by eating the right foods,” says Erin McNally, marketing team leader at the Oleander Drive store. “Our goal is to inspire long-term, healthy eating habits that will ultimately be part of the solution to our nation’s obesity and health crisis. Be mindful that food is more than fuel and every bite counts. Know more about what you eat—it’s one of the most important decisions we should make each day.” Founded in 1980, Whole Foods leads the way in natural and organic foods. They search and sell foods in or as close to their natural state, free of artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, preservatives, and hydrogenated fats. Yet, the team at Whole Foods wants to educate shoppers, as well. “We want to equip our shoppers with the tools needed to make long-term healthy choices beyond just the shopping list,” McNally notes. The store not only has a large selection of vegan and vegetarian options, they cater to gluten-free, non-dairy and sugar-free diets. They host numerous in-store events and share cooking tips and recipe ideas. They also team up with nonprofits throughout Wilmington to ensure their impact on a local level is far-reaching. “We provide food donations daily to our established local food banks and shelters, like the Good Shepherd picks up six days a week, and each month we provide in-kind donations to local nonprofits,” McNally says. They’ve held food drives for Feed4More campaign to raise funds to stock a pantry/ backpack for hundreds of students served through NourishNC (winner of encore’s Best Nonprofit, 2015).” They also host “5% Days” wherein they donate 5 percent of net proceeds from sales to local nonprofits (Best Of beneficiary DREAMS of Wilmington even benefitted in January). They also partner with local food artisans and growers throughout the South. Thus, much of what folks buy from their local Whole Foods will have been regionally sourced. “We believe in the importance of supporting local and helping make the connection between customers and the people

who grow our food,” McNally notes. “We continuously add new local suppliers.” Most recently, they’ve added Sea Love, The Coastal Succulent, and Island Roast Coffee, all Wilmington-based businesses. “We take pride in satisfying and delighting our customers each and every day,” McNally says. “We love being a part of creating a healthy vibrant community here in Wilmington.”

MASSAGE THERAPIST

Shelly Lancaster RELAX Massage Therapy 4000 Oleander Drive #2-A (910) 262-1122 www.relaxwilmington.com Massage therapy wasn’t always in the cards for Shelley Lancaster, Wilmington’s Best Massage Therapist for 2015. In fact, she entered the working world out of UNCW when she took a job at GE Nuclear in their uranium lab (she studied chemistry and biology). After realizing the corporate world wasn’t fulfilling, Lancaster became the office manager for a friend’s private dental practice. Here she remained for 20 years and enjoyed the one-on-one relationships she garnered with clients, as well as seeing the positive effects proper healthcare had on their lives. So when her friend closed the practice, Lancaster decided to continue helping people and went back to school for massage therapy at 40 years old. “It took several years for me to find my way to massage as a career,” Lancaseter admits. “Upon graduating from UNCW, I realized allopathic medicine was not my true hearts desire. Five years later I began to receive massage therapy weekly. It was then that I experienced the healing

power of massage. The benefits were not only physical but emotional and spiritual.” Today, she is helping clients reduce pain level and increase clarity at Relax! Massage Therapy (4000 Oleander Drive, Suite 2-A). She does therapeutic and healing work, as well as medical massage and cupping therapy. “It is rewarding to spread the knowledge of the powerful benefits of massage therapy and how it greatly reduces stress and pain without harmful side effects,” she says. “Massage should be a part of all of our wellness programs.” By working the mind-body balance, Lancaster strives to continuously improve her education while also sharpening her intuition skills with every client. The act of listening goes a long way in her job. “When they describe their goals, [I use] touch and intuition [to] listen to their body’s messages,” she says. “Based on that information, I provide a treatment that is customized to meet their needs [during] that session.” In 2015 she will continue to expand her certifications. She plans to add assessments and knowledge gained from the National Academy of Sports Medicine’s Corrective Exercise Specialist Training and Golf Fitness Training. Her goal is help each client reach greater balance, prevent injury and improve performance in daily life and athletic endeavors. “I am honored and thrilled to be nominated, but more shocked and elated to win [the ‘e,’]” Lancaster notes. “I am

filled with gratitude to my clients and all who took the time to cast a vote. Thank you, all! Encore’s Best Of is the award you dream of receiving. For years I’ve used the Best Of as a guide to great businesses in the Wilmington community. . . . I love Wilmington clientele! Wilmington is filled with great people with an appreciation for quality service.”

HAIR SALON and NAIL SALON

Tanglez Salon and Spa 4107 Oleander Dr E2 (910) 392-8111 www.tanglezofwilmington.com As Dolly Parton says in “Steel Magnolias,” “There’s no such thing as natural beauty.” While the sentiment is a stretch, Donnie Canady, owner of Tanglez Salon and Spa, has been beautifying the population for over 30 years. After managing two salons at Independence Mall, he set up his own brick-and-morter just down the way on Oleander Drive, beside Pizzetta’s Pizza. Firing up hair dryers and sharpening scissors, Tanglez officially opened its doors in January 2009. With six years in the biz, they took home Best Hair Salon and Best Nail Salon this year. “I am still amazed at how quickly it has grown,” Canady says. “There’s nothing more gratifying than making someone feel good about themselves.”

8 ENCORE BEST OF WILMINGTON 2015 | www.encorepub.com

From the second a customer walks in, a doting staff of expert stylists ensure everyone has a memorable, relaxing experience. Thirteen stations and 15 staff members ushered in Tanglez existence. Now, they have grown to 23 stations and a staff of over 30. The NC State Board’s requirement that stylists receive eight hours of continuing education each year has kept staff members abreast of the latest trends. Canady reminds that without the dedication of his staff, Tanglez would be nothing more than a building. For the locally owned and family-operated business, forging relationships and lasting connections takes precedence. “My parents taught us to always be kind to everyone you meet,” Canady says. “That is advice that everyone at Tanglez lives by, and I believe that is one reason we have been so successful in this industry.” Whether needing airbrush makeup, spray-tanning, facials, body wraps, a waxing, color, or a simple trim, Tanglez is a one-stop shop for beauty. (Their lavish offerings even earned them a nod in the Best Spa category.) They added their nail salon shortly after they opened, and since, it’s evolved to mask the noisy pedicure thrones (complete with jetted foot basins). Instead, they utilize a clean, sleek bowl with disposable liners to add to the pampering experience. Likewise, they set themselves apart locally by being one of the few locales carrying Opalex. The innovative technology allows stylists to lighten hair without compromising it. Recently, they’ve personalized coloring treatments by adding Lanza Healing Hair Color, which gives clients more color options. “We have also noticed men showing more interest in their hair,” Canady informs, “and we have been attending barbering classes to cater to our male clientele.” However, the biggest trend in the hair biz now is a new highlighting technique called “balayage.” The free-hand technique permits highlights to be applied directly to the hair rather than by using tin foil. “It allows for a more natural, lived in result, with softer, less noticeable regrowth,” Canady adds. Staying true to his mother’s words, Canady and the Tanglez team relish every opportunity to give back to the community as well. From cut-a-thons that benefit local cancer patients to a fantasy fashion show that aids the Yahweh Children’s Center, Tanglez stays busy spreading its roots throughout the community. They even donate salon and spa services to charities each and every week.

“As a native Wilmingtonian, I can’t imagine working anywhere else,” Canady proclaims. “Wilmington is ‘home,’ and we love to participate in and help out as many other local businesses and nonprofits as we possibly can.”

DENTIST

Bozart Family Dentistry 6132 Carolina Beach Rd. (910) 392-9101 www.bozartfamilydentistry.com For nine years now, Dr. Albert Bozart has practiced dentistry, with the goal of providing comprehensive care affordably—more so a single set of teeth are not overlooked because of a dollar bill. His passion for keeping our community’s smiles white and pearly for miles, and healthy and happy, has landed him a win on our poll for Best Dentist for three years in a row now at Bozart Family Dentistry (6132 Carolina Beach Rd.). “I’m passionate about serving our community’s oral healthcare needs, as well as serving and donating to various local charities and causes,” Dr. Bozart says. Their services span everything from general cleanings to pediatric denistry, special-needs dentistry, cosmetic services, orthodonics or oral surgery, and even anxiety control dentistry. “We strive to provide superior service with modern technology and techniques,” Dr. Bozart informs. “We recently added 3D imaging to assist with implants and surgery.” He also added a laboratory, wherein his attentive and caring staff can fabricate crowns and bridges on the same day. His faculty goes the extra mile to pacify squeamish patients who already fear visits to the dentist’s chair. “We do our best to make it as warm and fun of an experience as possible,” he says. In a day an age where healthcare often provides heartaches rather than heart flutters, Dr. Bozart makes sure patients find a financing plan suitable to their oral-health. Recently, they started a $50 a month plan to minimize the monetary burdens that dental care sometimes presents. Patients must sign up for a credit card authorization for recur-

ring charges and present proper identification. “This is an in-house, 0-percent interest, dental-financing program that will really open up quality oral healthcare to everyone with a valid credit card,” Dr. Bozart says. Currently, the office is noticing an upswing in dental implants and Invisalign (clear braces) inquiries. They’re actually running a special on Invasalign for only $3,595 ($900 off retail). Folks who wish to make an appointment can do so online (www.bozartfamilydentistry.com). “In order to serve our local patients even better, we’ve expanded our hours to be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday; we close at 5 p.m. on Friday,” he says.

Taste the Olive The Forum, 1125-D Military Cutoff Rd. (910) 256-6457 www.tastetheolive.com In recent years, people have been paying closer attention to what they put in their bodies. As such, holistic remedies and natural, fresh foods have taken precedence in the food industry. Local business Taste The Olive, helmed by owners Kymberlei and Scott DiNapoli, has earned the title of Best Gourmet Store.

Growing up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Kymberlei has long been accustomed to transparency as to where foods come from. Likewise, Scott’s Italian heritage and travels to Mediterranean countries have guided their culinary offerings at Taste the Olive. For the DiNapolies it’s all about getting back to the basics, which they do at their shop and its attached eatery, The Olive Cafe and Wine Bar. Their shelves evidence their affinity toward healthy fare. Their balsamic vinegars come aged, white or flavor infused. One of their biggest crowd-pleasers is the Aged 18-Year Traditional Balsamic, sure to complement any meal. Very Vanilla Bean, Razzy Raspberry and Wild About Butterflies top their list of flavored Balsamic vinegars. Likewise, they offer olive oils, with flavors like Bursting with Basil, Under the Tuscan Herb, Caliente Chipotle, Boldly Butter, or Wild Mushroom and Sage. Their racks also are stocked full of salts and spices, and natural body essentials to keep skin silky smooth. Customers can visit Taste the Olive’s website for a full list of tasty, healthy recipes to make with their products. Creamy goat cheese pesto and juicy grapefruit balsamic jelly top their list of delicious dishes. Plus, adventurous minds can indulge in their private oil tastings and education classes, or a cheese and wine pairing event. Folks can schedule one by calling (910) 256-6457. Try Taste the Olive by heading over on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. for half-price appetizers, wine and cheese pairings, chocolate and bourbon parings, and drink specials ($3 beers and $7 craft cocktails, and half-price bottles of wine).

BREWERY, APPETIZERS and RIBS

Front Street Brewery 9 N Front St.• (910) 251-1935 www.frontstreetbrewery.com “We make our food and beer from scratch,” says Ellie Craig, sales and publicrelations head of Front Street Brewery. “Working with our hands to make something everyday gives us pride in what we do, and every brewer, chef and line cook takes that very seriously. We love Wilmington, and we are proud to represent the Cape Fear region through our food and our craft beer.” Winner of Best Ribs, Best Appetizers (which they’ve now won for three consecutive years) and Best Brewery, Front Street Brewery’s walls are adorned with even more accolades than the ones already displayed. Yet, Craig and company aren’t letting that go to their (frothy) heads. “We are truly humbled,” she says. “With the rise of the craft-beer scene in Wilmington this year, the number of quality craft breweries that have opened, and the amount of good beer that is now available in Wilmington, it’s reassuring to know that all of the hard work that we all do, day in and day out, is appreciated. We celebrate this award as evidence of that hard work, but we acknowledge that we couldn’t have this award without the hard work that others have put into their beer. That makes this award so much more meaningful to us.” Having opened in 1995, this marks Front Street Brewery’s 20th year of service. Experimenting with beer proves a passion for current head brewmistress, Kelsie Cole. Their Wort Shops and Single Hop series mark their more adventurous endeavors. IPAs and Sours also have seen a dramatic increase during the past couple years; Front Street Brewery always works to keep up with local palates. “For the last 20 years, we’ve been the only kids in the sandbox,” Craig notes. “Now we have some awesome new breweries out there, with which we are excited to

collaborate beer recipes, create new events and educate the Cape Fear region about one thing we all love: beer! Brewery tourism is also on the rise and through our combined efforts, we can all tap into that.” Their desire for evolution shines through in their food as well. Though they have their mainstays—like their award-winning ribs— daily specials feature seasonal ingredients. And all the food perfectly complements the beer. “We train our staff to be knowledgeable about our beer, bourbon and food, and provide the type of service we can be proud of,” Craig exacts. Community is big for the brewery, too, as seen through their generous give-backs. They raise funds for programs like Battleship Capital Campaign, The Cape Fear Raptor Center, the local chapter of UsTOO International, and Ales for ALS through their beer sales. Plus, they’re involved with organizations like Downtown Business Alliance, Wilmington Downtown Inc., and other community-building nonprofits. Looking toward 2015, they already have plans to celebrate their big 2-0. They’ve released their 1995 Lumina Lager that started it all. “We have had people from all over the South ask us to bring it back and we’ve listened,”Craig informs. “Also, watch out for an announcement about our 20th anniversary party soon! “

SPORTS BAR and WAITSTAFF

Copper Penny 109 Chestnut St. • (910) 762-1373 www.copperpennync.com Amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Wilmington, there’s a quaint little bar with decor that harkens the days of yesteryear. Outfitted in furniture and hangings that seem straight out of the days of the American Revolution, Copper Penny has been serving up drinks and food for 12 years now. Since opening they’ve gained quite a stellar reputation, as they’ve earned Best Waitstaff for several years now, and this year they’ve added Best Sports Bar to the list. “Our love for great food and Philadelphia sports created a unique opportunity for the area,” owner Andrew Devoid says. With dim lighting and a spacious dining area, the bar creates a perfect atmosphere to watch the game on one of their high-def TVs over a brew. Copper Penny is the hot spot to go during the sports season’s Philly Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies’ games. The bar has not been immune to the steadily growing craft-beer craze either. Never short

on pours, the bar serves an abundance of North Carolina-based ales, including Oskar Blues, Beer Army, and Southern Appalachian, among. Their drafts hit the spot, alongside a meaty Southwest burger. Plus, their gourmet pub fare is filled with classics like a to-die-for Philly (new category for 2016, perhaps?), piled-high Reuben, or the Lady Liberty portabella sandwich, served up by some of Wilmington’s friendliest faces. The Copper Penny simply has a winning recipe for success. “We aim to hire people who work hard and represent our business in an upbeat, friendly and professional manner,” Devoid says. On any trip to the Copper Penny, diners find that no matter how busy it is, the waitstaff maintains excellence in service. They ensure drinks are never empty, customers are engaged and appetites are always fulfilled. “We the love the community of people and businesses that support encore, and knowing they love us just as much is wonderful,” Devoid says. “Wilmington is growing in a positive direction, and we look forward in our continual support of all the great orga-

YoSake 33 S Front St. • (910) 763-3172 www.yosake.com Ten years ago, YoSake took home Best New Restaurant in encore’s reader’s poll. Fast forward to 2015 and their wellestablished reputation has earned them Best Sushi and Best Japanese. “[YoSake’s] inception was drawn to match the changing landscape of downtown Wilmington at that time,” marketing manager Nick White tells. “Sushi had been approaching a great level of popularity, and we wanted to bring a new, hip, bright, loungelike feel to the demographic that lived in and frequented our growing downtown scene.” Nestled on Front Street, directly above The Husk, YoSake brings a touch of the East to our eastern seaboard. Sushi, dumplings, curries, and more dot the restaurant’s expansive menu. Their sushi rolls, which come half-price as part of their nightly happy hour from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., range from spicy to traditional to wildly inventive. Their ROY G BIV Roll, stuffed with crab, avocado, cucumber, tuna, yellowtail, salmon, and shrimp, and topped with scallions and tobiko, creates a whirlwind of color. Likewise, the Fire “In” the Mountain roll features spicy tuna prepared futomaki style that’s sure to liven up anyone’s dinner. Adventurous diners can nosh on the This Is How We Roll, which comes chockful of the chef’s most-inspired combinations (no substitutions and no regrets). Plus, their teriyaki grill, complete with choice of grilled chicken breast, salmon, tuna, jumbo shrimp, scallops, or petite filet, gives diners a taste of Japanese entrees. All teriyaki dishes come piled high with fried rice and vegetables. “We are so fortunate to have an inspired culinary staff that keeps our customers’ palates delighted,” White says. Recently, YoSake has been lining their kitchen shelves with more local and regional products. “Not only are we able to support our local merchants, farmers and fishermen in doing so, but the goods we receive are top-notch,” White notes. A small-plates Monday menu night also has begun drawing in customers. “Embracing the local is the trend we are most keen to right now,” White says. “Being able to recycle funds locally and regionally while bringing the most superior of food to our

customers is a no-brainer.” Adding to their level of community involvement, YoSake recently hung new art work from the creative talent of Johnny Bahr. Plus, they’re utilizing the growing world of social media to the fullest. “Last summer, we ran a really fun promotion, which we called the Social Media Check Comp Jackpot, where anyone dining with us had the chance at a free meal when they interacted with us on our social media,” White details. Soon, they’ll be incorporating a new, similar campaign, wherein Yelp reviewers that weigh in on YoSake (good or bad) will be eligible for a discount. “We are flushed with appreciation for this community that our food, staff, and atmosphere have made a mark with Wilmington locals,” White declares.

earned them Best Mediterranean Food. Offering sandwiches, platters and more, Baba Ghannouj has an array of fare. Their Classic Gyro Platter comes with a choice of beef or lamb and is served with a Greek salad, hummus and cucumber salad. Ringing up at $9.99 it’s a full Mediterranean experience that doesn’t break the bank. Folks also can opt for the Curry Chicken and Rice Platter. Likewise, the Gyro Shawirma sandwich comes smothered in potatoes, garlic sauce and parsley, and with a choice of beef, lamb, or chicken, it tantalizes local taste buds. All sandwiches come in under $6 and can be made into a combo for an additional $2.99. As well, they offer vegetarian options, along with kabobs and wraps. Hummus, salads—from Greek to Ceaser, Fattoush to Tabouleh—and falafel top the list of trending items at the eatery. The quick-service restaurant makes a perfect lunch getaway from the office or a fast and convenient dinner. According to Jamal Haddad, a passion for food and people congregating led him to the restaurant business. “[We’re] always trying to plant a smile on the faces of our customers,” he adds. In keeping the menu fresh, Haddad hints that more menu items will debut in 2015. Plus, they will continue supporting local nonprofits through generously donated gift certificates to aid their fundraising efforts. “Wilmington is a great town with so much going on,” Haddad expresses.

Multiple-time winner for Best Desserts and Best Bakery, Wilmington has once again recognized the sweet, deliciousness the long-time shop serves up. Celebrating their 30th year in business, lots of surprises will waft through the air around their two Wilmington locations (one at The Forum on Kerr Avenue and the other on Military Cutoff). “Creating lifelong memories is our mission,” owner Rob Cooley says. “We strive to create an experience for people; not just a baked good. We are privileged to play a part in celebrating life’s most precious milestones with our customers.” Whether it’s a birthday or an anniversary with that special someone—from digital-im-

This comes in addition to their usual cookies, pastries and breads. No matter what, Apple Annie’s has a freshly made baked good perfect for the day. “There is a trend right now for smallbatch, hand-crafted products,” Cooley details. “At Apple Annie’s everything is made right here in our kitchen daily, as it has been for the last 30 years. We are baking it fresh from scratch everyday.” Like any prospering business, Apple Annie’s never settles. They constantly are working toward improvements. Recently, they remodeled the inside of their original store on Kerr, and they added a new location at The Forum (next to Bento Box). Likewise, donating to schools, churches and various nonprofits like the United Way, top their list of ways to return the favor to their patrons. Doss opened the Southern haven Rx Restaurant and Bar in the old Hall’s

Drug Store building at the corner of 5th and Castle in 2012. By 2014, he had expanded and opened his second location, Pembroke’s, in the Forum Shopping Center, on Military Cutoff Road. Doss’ approach to the tastes of the South revolves around indigenous ingredients, all culled from locals. “A daily changing menu is a concept derived from using what is at your hands, as we have great seafood and vegetables in Wilmington that allow for new ingredients everyday,” Doss tells of both eateries. “It’s a natural progression to keep inspired by area farmers and fishermen. Brainstorming starts with the ingredients and how to pair them texturally and flavor profiles to compose refined dishes.” Doss’ mother and grandmother led by example in the kitchen in early life. They were outstanding Southern cooks, according to the chef. Time spent side-byside in their kitchens have rooted many of Doss’ own twists on modern Southern cuisine, as tasted in items like butter bean hummus, roasted peanut and bacon mortadella, or cornbread clams casino. At Pembroke’s he utilizes cooking over an open flame in the wood fire oven. “Pembroke’s already had a great space, with a wood grill and rotisserie,”

he explains of the spacious open restaurant. “I thought it would bring out a different flavor and atmosphere.” Doss sharpened his knife skills in Wilmington a decade ago when he worked as a line cook at Harvest Moon. He continued working under other great chefs and ended up at The Husk in Charleston, SC, working under celebrity chef Sean Brock, before returning to Wilmington to upstart his own restaurant. Purveying local foods is the mission of both Rx and Pembroke’s, as Doss works with farmers like Cottle Organics, Black River Organic Farm, Red Beard, and others, while purveying fish from area markets like Mott’s Channel and Steve’s Seafood. “I just try to do right by them and treat their ingredients with respect,” he says. “I’ve seen other restaurants and home cooks jumping on this trend and think it is here to stay. Sharing food and ideas is the cornerstone of a strong community.”

In addition to our fresh quality, the ‘open’ kitchen helps to differentiate us from the competition. Customers (especially kids) love to watch the whole cooking process. “ And a sandwich at PT’s just isn’t complete without a pile of their hand-cut fries, doused in lemon pepper. Ask anyone who has ever ordered from there, and they’ll comment on the potato’s savory flavor. Add to the good-foodquick efficiancy and friendly service, and it’s no wonder the restaurant has continued to top our polls every year for three decades. For those who can’t make it to a PT’s, have PT’s come to you! The launch of their new food truck, PT’s Grille Mobile, makes parties, corporate events, private functions, and even lunch at the office a bite better than ever. They sell their famed burgers, chicken sandwiches and fries onsite (reserve the food truck by emailing ptsgrillemobile@gmail.com).

CHINESE RESTAURANT

Szechuan 132 419 S College Rd. • (910) 799-1426 www.szechuan132.com Cultural fare has long been a part of the American culinary scene. Curious diners are always looking for that authentic taste from around the world. For Chinese food, Wilmingtonians have spoken and crowned Szechuan 132 as Best Chinese Restaurant. With 26 years in the food industry, Szechuan 132 owner Joseph H. Hou maintains it’s always a joy to open his kitchen in the morning. “The restaurant is no longer our (my wife, Sally) working place: It is our good hang out place now,” he says. “The place we share fun, joy, and gratification with our customers and our restaurant family. We are the artists in our own little fun world. We ‘wok’ and roll with different ingredients in the kitchen every day to create something that we can showcase to the world with pride.“ Their menu comes complete with a variety of authentic dishes. Their pineapple chicken comes with a kick, as the chicken is marinated and placed into a stir-fry, complete with a spicy sauce. It perfectly blends the sweet and spicy, making for a lively experience for the palate. Likewise, their rosemary lamb is combined with fresh-market seasonal veggies, while the Cape Fear Treasure offers an array of seafood. Locally sourced meat and seafood, derived from environmentallysustainable methods, always remains a trend the eatery adheres to. They also have been focusing on children’s nutrition and gluten-free products. Hospitality takes precedence for Hou and his team, both in-store and outside through the various nonprofits they are involved in. “Besides business, we as human beings have a duty and responsibility to serve others,” he comments. “My favorite quote is, ‘Even the most introverted individual can influence ten thousand others during his or her lifetime, provided that he or she settles with the attitude to serve and not to

be served.’ That is because giving and serving are the highest levels of living. Whether it’s spending more time with your family, developing an employee who shows potential, or helping people in the community, it is what services you can do for others. Our dedication and commitment to serving others is what makes Szechuan 132 superior.” Their food isn’t the only thing fresh about Szechuan 132; they also have kept their digs evolving over their 26-year history. From moving the dining room to small changes with decor and lighting, they always strive to keep an aura to complement their noteworthy fare. “The little changes are undeniably worth every penny of our effort,” Hou states. “Of course, there are constant day-to-day problems that need to be rectified and fixed. We are constantly assessing what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong.” It’s an attitude like this that earned them their coveted moniker this year. “We are very grateful for the recognition we have received for our work because we are very sure that every other nominee for this award was just as deserving of this award,” Hou says. “As we all know, there are no businesses in the world without its hurdles. We are no exception. We face challenges, obstacles and mistakes along the way, but each setback has only strengthened us and

helped to make us a better restaurateur and better people. This award could not have been achieved without the inspiration, help, and support of our friends, family, and community. The support we have been given drives our strength to challenge ourselves to work harder and excel every day. This award belongs to our friends, family and our community.”

But the Market Street Italian restaurant is back on top for the first time since 2005, scoring Best Pizza. A family-owned-and-operated establishment, Elizabeth’s has been serving Wilmington since 1987 at the corner of Market Street and Kerr Avenue in the North 17 Shopping Plaza (they also have locations in Fayetteville, Greensboro, and Eden, NC, and in Collinsville, VA). Their handmade dough served on all pizzas, calzones and strombolis can’t be topped thanks to its perfectly crispy and buttery decadence. Whether ordering a hand-tossed pie or the thicker Sicilian version, Elizabeth’s makes sure it comes out perfect every time. And folks can order from their numerous specialties—like grilled chicken and jalapeño barbecue—or simply build their own. Yet, pie isn’t all the eatery is known for; they have a huge menu filled to the gills with entrees, salads, sandwiches, and more. Their pasta dishes are made to order (don’t go without trying the red clam sauce and spaghetti), and they cross cuisines, too, serving everything from Philly cheesesteaks to burgers. It’s Italian-American at its finest! Over the years, they’ve renovated the restaurant, including the latest addition of their bar, open daily from 4 p.m. to midnight. Here, they offer nightly drink specials and even a slice and a pint for

$6 on weeknights from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The restaurant opens daily at 10 a.m., ready to serve lunch, and stays open through dinner and into late-night hours, also closing at midnight. For those on the go, take out is always an option, as are their catering services. Plus, they have meeting rooms on site, which house up to 50 people, perfect to host company lunches, birthday parties, family reunions, and more!

OYSTERS

Dock St. Oyster Bar 12 Dock St. • (910) 762-2827 www.dockstreetoysterbar.net It’s all about top-quality ingredients, prepared with thought and love, served in a fun, casual atmosphere at Dock St. Oyster Bar, Wilmington’s Best Oysters for 15 years in a row now. Louise Forbes-Simpson and business partner Steve Maillard opened the raw bar in 1999. “I have worked and loved the industry for 32 years,” Forbes-Simpson says. “Because of my true love for people.” They focus on clean, guilt-free choices made with quality seafood. One thing diners won’t see on the menu: Calabash-style fried foods. “We have our core steamer menu and we are competitive with our pricing,” Forbes-Simpson assures. “We can eas-

ily meet most dietary requests because we use very few processed foods.” Folks can indulge in a variety of appetizers, like their luscious jalapeño crab and shrimp dip, made with jalapeños, bacon and cheddar, blended together with shellfish. They can order from a selection of salads, like their chef’s seafood variety, including raspberry marinated shrimp, scallops and calamari. They can also order sandwiches, but the real gold comes in Dock Street’s multitude of steamers, which include any mix of crab legs, clams, mussels, shrimp, and, yes, oysters. “We constantly change menu and beverage selections,” Forbes-Simpson notes. “[In 2015] expect more fresh, local ‘dock to table’ products and new ‘docktails’!” They’ll also be increasing the local products they sell, as well as upping the ante on customer service. They strive to turn every guest into the quintessential Norm from “Cheers.” “We love our beautiful city, and the people who live and visit here,” she continues. “We are humbled that they acknowledge this tiny, hole-in-the-wall restaurant can put out such great food.”

BURRITO

Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn 4002 Oleander Dr. • (910) 799-2919 www.flamingamysburritobarn.com When it comes to burritos, Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn has it in the bag. The dining establishment began rolling specialty burritos back in 2000. Since, they have been keeping diners happily sated with 16 years worth of totrillas, rice, beans, fillings, and loads of chips and homemade salsas. “The restaurant business is all I know and is pretty much all I have ever done,” says owner Jay Muxworthy, who opened the eatery with his wife, the restaurant’s namesake, Amy. “We just try to continue to put out the best product we can. I think when you have been around for a while it is easy to get too comfortable. I try to avoid that.” With a focus on consistency, the restaurateurs have launched a quirky

establishment welcoming the funky and fun side of life. From a wall of pink flamingos, to Elvis playing overhead, to the counter being constructed out of the front of an old hot rod, to employees proudly sporting their latest ink, Flaming Amy’s has attitude to match its creative burrito names, like the Baywatch (grilled tilapia and shrimp, lettuce, diced tomatoes, cheese, and Hasslehoff jalapeno tartar sauce) or Shrimp Makirito (cucumbers, carrots, spinach, rice, fried shrimp tossed in teriyaki sauce, and wasabi avocado salsa). Folks who don’t wish to order from their burrito menu can build their own, or go for tacos, quesadillas, nachos, or salads. And their salsas—well, Flaming Amy’s only serves the best pineapple salsa in Wilmington, hands down (other flavors consist of black bean and corn, flaming hot, Asian cucumber, wasabi avocado, green tomatillo, chipotle tomatillo, and ginger peach). The Muxworthys founded Operation Salsa Drop years ago, wherein they sent Flaming Amy’s salsas to soldiers serving in the war overseas. They also work with local charity Nour-

ishNC (encore’s Best Nonprofit 2015), which helps feed schoolchildren through a backpack program. “We always appreciate being acknowledged by the encore readers,” Jay says. “Every year I think this is the year we will be knocked out of the winner’s circle, and each year, I am pleasantly surprised when we win.”

Atmosphere and a delicious meal can go a long way in combating the lulls in conversation. (I mean, first dates are primarily designed to treat yourself or be treated to a nice meal, right?) Well, Wilmington has given their long-stemmed red rose of approval to the Port City’s premier fondue spot, The Little Dipper, for Best Place for a First Date—which they’ve earned for several years.

location,” Worrell attributes to the pizzeria and pubs’ success. Quality ingredients and an awesome staff contribute to their fame. Known for their pizza—customizable with an array of toppings and served by the pie or by the slice—Slice’s menu diversifies with quesadillas, tacos, nachos, and a slew of wings. Soups and salads round out their selection for waist-watching patrons. “When you get in your car and go to work, you [should] enjoy going, otherwise find something else,” Worrell advises. He keeps up to date on industry standards with an annual visit to the Pizza Show in Vegas. Slice also cultivates a presence in the community, routinely giving to local charities. Philanthropy becomes especially sweet given the validation Wilmington continues to bestow on the eatery. “[It] makes me feel good that the locals enjoy Slice of Life,” Worrell humbly states.

the bygone. Taking Wilmington’s Best Buffet, Best Fried Chicken and Best Soul Food is Casey’s Buffet, Barbecue and Home Cookin’, which has prevailed on our local scene since opening June 4th, 2005. Working in the restaurant industry for 20plus years, owner Larry Casey has been living the American dream and learning a lot of lessons along the way. But he’s always stayed true to his motto for serving soul food “just like mom used to make.” “Casey’s goes the extra mile,” he states. “The customer is king at Casey’s—every customer is treated equally. We are grateful for each and every [diner].” Exceeding the conventional buffet archetype, Casey’s accommodates the desires of all patrons. If diners make a special request, it’s likely they’ll receive it. As well, dishes that date back to the 1800s pervade their bountiful spread. Frequenters can pile their plates with pulled-pork, chitterlings (chitlins), chicken gizzards, pot roast, meatloaf, and every conceivable Southern cuisine inbetwixt. Plus, their golden-brown fried chicken completes any meal. “We are the only restaurant in Wilmington who serves whole, on the bone, farm-raised catfish,” Larry says. Cooked vegetables and hearty mac n’ cheese are also supplied in heaping portions. A Casey’s meal simply requires a second stomach or a second visit—no menu fixin’ should go un-sampled.“It’s always an amazing feeling to be recognized by our customers,” Casey admits. No matter how long a restaurateur remains in business, diners’ appreciation always validates.
