ARABIAN CEMENT COMPANY 00 966 12 694 8166 WWW.ARABIACEMENT.COM

DELIVERING VALUE THAT MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL

Arabian Cement Company (ACC) was the first cement producer in either the Kingdom or the Arabian Gulf when it was first incorporated in 1955. The original plant, which was located North of Jeddah city, began production with 300 tons clinker and 100 tons lime capacity, which by 1974 had expanded to 2000 tons per day.

ARABIAN CEMENT COMPANY

The company continued to grow and expand and, in 1984 in order

to preserve the environment, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques ordered that the plant should be transferred to the city of Rabigh, north of King Abdullah Economic City. It was an important and inspired decision, and today ACC has a production capacity of up to 12,000 tons per day.

A

leading Public Listed group based in Jeddah, ACC operates within the cement and ready-mix markets, both inside and outside of Saudi Arabia. With almost 60 years of continuous

success behind it, the company is ranked as one of the largest 100 in the Kingdom, and has a framework agreement in place with Italcementi (the world’s fifth largest cement producer) for mutual investment in the Middle East. An Emphasis on Innovation, Training and Development Committed to the pursuit of excellence and superior service, ACC has invested heavily in the very latest tools and equipment and has cultivated an attitude of openness to new ideas. Furthermore, with a strict work philosophy that is centred on precision and integrity of tenders and complete work transparency, the company provides

ACC’s main activities revolve around the Rabigh plant, the Qatranah Cement Company in Jordan, a ready-mix concrete and construction supplies company in Jordan, and a cement products company.

QATRANAH CEMENT COMPANY (JORDAN) In order to achieve its strategic objectives as regards geographical expansion, ACC took the decision to create a new cement factory in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, believing that it was an attractive environment for investment in what is a potentially very lucrative market. Indeed, there is a growing need in the country for high quality cement thanks to the increasing number of large projects being carried out, which are being fuelled by the overall economic renaissance taking place in Jordan at the current time. The Qatranah Cement Company facility is to be found in Karak, 90km south of Amman, with the company making a $400 million

CEMENT PRODUCTS INDUSTRY COMPANY ACC, together with the Al-Yamamah Cement and Saudi Cement companies, own an equal share in this endeavour and has an equal representation on the board of the Cements Products Industry Company Limited (CPI). CPI owns two factories that produce paper sacks for packing cement and petrochemical products such as fertilizers. The factories are located in Riyadh and Jeddah. Whatever the business unit, ACC is producing high quality cement and associated products in accordance with the very highest international standards in order to meet the required specifications of the marketplace at a competitive price. CORPORATE GOVERNANCE ACC has applied corporate governance with great care and efficiency since the issuance of the Companies Governance Rules by the Capital Market Authority in 2006, which of course ties in perfectly with its positive relationships with shareholders, investors and other concerned parties. As an application of transparency rules, the Board of Directors of ACC approved the governance rules of the company in June 2013 for the enhancement of the shareholders’ rights in the long-term, in addition to the authentication of the governance policies and rules in the company. A copy of the governance rules was sent to the Capital Market Authority at the same time. The various departments within ACC are participating in supporting and strengthening the governance rules in the company, besides continuing to develop the best work techniques for the protection of the interests of ACC and its shareholders. Looking to the Future Today, ACC is ranked sixth in the industry, with a 7% market share nationwide. Committed to ongoing growth and expansion though, the company aims to be in the top three within the next five years. It will achieve this in a number of ways. ACC is currently, for instance, proceeding with the construction of line number seven, which will 10,000 additional tons of cement production per day, with a total capacity of three million tons per year. The initial plan was to expand by 7000 tons per day, but the forecast demand figures necessitated that the company settled on the higher figure of 10,000 tons. Moreover, ACC has the advantage of being very well located, including being right next to King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC),

commitment to energy conservation in an endeavour which is the first of its kind for cement companies within the Kingdom.

§SETTING A NEW BENCHMARK Backed by state-of-the-art technology, access to the best quality raw materials and highly skilled manpower, in tandem with the Kingdom’s infrastructure growth going into overdrive, ACC is extremely upbeat about the future. Superior products, a strong brand name, and technical know-how represent the company’s abiding strengths. Concrete, of which cement is an important constituent, is the world’s most used man-made material. The only natural material used in greater volume is water! More than wood, plastic, glass, asphalt and even steel, concrete provides the highest level of security and protection for property; the longest life and durability; and the lowest environmental lifecycle footprint. These are just a few of the reasons why more and more developers are switching to concrete, protecting people, the environment, and receiving best value for their investments. And ACC is at the forefront of this trend, supplying a level of quality and service that is setting a new benchmark in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

WATER FOR ALL WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL

For a country to develop and grow economically and for people to be healthy, wealthy and wise there is a long list of essential things that need to be put in place. Roads need to be laid and maintained, schools and hospitals need to be built and telephone and Internet connectivity need to be established, but before any of this can occur, safe water needs to flow. Enter the state-owned municipal company, The National Water and Sewerage Corporation in Uganda, who have taken on the challenge of providing clean water and sanitation for its people. Endeavour was fortunate enough to speak with Managing Director, Dr. Silver Mugisha about the project.

NWSC

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC)

Uganda is a Public Utility Company, completely owned by the Government of Uganda. Established in 1972, the corporation’s mandate is to operate and provide water and sewerage services in the areas entrusted to it, on a sound commercial and financially viable basis.

centres across the country (with a total population of over 5

million people) in 2015. Furthermore, water service coverage in NWSC towns is estimated at 79% for which over 96 million m3 of water is produced per annum from 33 water treatment plants and 77 water production facilities, all distributed through over 8,000 km of water mains. Additionally, as Dr. Mugisha points out, NWSC operates 26 wastewater treatment facilities with a total sewer network length of more than 700 km. In total that’s a staggering 405,140 water connections, 19,300 sewer connections and a total work force of 2,473 staff. “The vision of NWSC,” he explains, “is to be a leading water utility in the world and our mission is to provide efficient and cost effective water and sewerage services using innovative managerial techniques and customised solutions for our customers.”

COURSE CHANGE AND MASSIVE GROWTH In November 2013, under the leadership of the Board and a new management team, the corporation changed its strategic focus and launched a 5-year strategic direction that provided the corporation with a new outlook and key strategic interventions, while taking into account the wider stakeholder expectations, policy directions and competitive environment. The strategic direction came at a time when the corporation was at cross roads with a good historical performance record, and a growing demand for services across the urban divide in Uganda, “The strategic direction was aimed at gearing the corporation up for transformational changes in its operational and geographical mandate, as well as highlighting the corporation’s contribution towards the national vision of transforming Uganda from a peasantry to a self-sustaining economy.” He adds that over the last two years, the corporation has

External services Department has been at the forefront in sharing NWSC’s knowledge and expertise with sister institutions in the region in order to foster South-South as well as North-South Cooperation. Dr Mugisha explains that through the provision of external services to other utilities, synergies are created within the utilities that result in an uplift of performance, thereby providing the basis for sustainable operations in the long-term. Through External Services, the Corporation has been able to partner with several utilities in Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Trinidad and Tobago, Bangladesh, and Uganda amongst others. This is made possible by the existence of a well-balanced and motivated professional workforce. LOOKING AHEAD As a result of good performance, the corporation won several regional and global awards in recognition of its efficiency improvements in revenue collection, excellence and innovation, infrastructure service delivery and replicating good practices to other utilities through the external services wing of the corporation. Among industry recognitions, awards received in 2014 included the Global Water Leaders Awards received in Paris, the African Water Utility of the Year 2013/2014 award received in Cape Town South Africa, Golden Europe Award for Quality and Customer Excellence received in Geneva and the most Compliant Public Entity in PPDA (Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority) award received in Nairobi.

2015 AND BEYOND NWSC efforts to improve access to clean water, sanitation services and water management have led to immediate and longterm economic, social and environmental benefits that have made a difference to many lives and progressively contributed to the country’s economic and social transformation. Moving forward, Dr. Mugisha reveals that the corporation intends to maintain the momentum of the strategic activities and achievements attained so far and also aims to expand its mandate to cover all major urban

centres within Uganda in a bid to ensure accelerated service and 100% coverage for water. The Corporation is in advanced stages of finalising its 3-year corporate plan for the period 2015-2018. The new corporate plan is strategically anchored and takes cognisance of the 5-year strategic direction and is also in line with the overall Government policy direction. The strategic theme of the new corporate plan is “Continuous Improvement for Sustainable and Equitable Service Delivery” and the catchphrase is “water for all – for a delighted customer by a delighted workforce”. “We intend to draw from lessons and build on the past successes and espouse the elements of water service provision for all, infrastructure growth, water supply reliability, uplifting the profile and delivery of sewerage services, adopting SMART systems, customer delight, enhancing collaboration with various stakeholders, in a bid to create synergies for sustainable and equitable service delivery,” Dr. Mugisha explains. “We need to keep the water going and coming out as efficiently as possible,” he wraps up.

Chris Garde, CEO of G4S Guam and Country Manager, has been enjoying regular promotions and successes. within the area, “The first company we acquired was Securewest, a company focussed upon guarding merchant marine vessels.” These vessels, Chris explains, were the propositioning vessels that were sent out prior to operations such as Desert Storm in Iraq and were support logistic vessels based in Saipan.

What is unique about the business is that while G4S may be considered first and foremost as a security company, the scope and coverage of the services offered are wide and all encompassing, indicating a keen eye for diversification and opportunities. provide manned services, but we offer cash services, guarding, alarm monitoring, protective systems and evaluations.” Chris is also very proud of the management team that he has carefully put together over the years as it boasts some most respected individuals, “The former Chief of Police, Paul Suba, runs my operations and I also work with Francis Lesaki, a former chief member of the FBI and director of homeland security in Guam. My division director is Clarence Hearth, who is a former army ranger who retired after 30 years and was a major in the army, my Task Division is also run by a former US marine.” The list of accolades and titles truly illustrates the level of quality that Chris has included into his business and creates an almost frightening catalogue of professional expertise. He explains that these different skill sets have proved invaluable for the protecting of customers. Crime is a fast moving industry, one of the fastest to develop and the only way to forestall it, Chris explains, is to think and act faster, with better resources. “It is the depth of management and our experience which allows us to provide a stellar quality of service,” he says, “Intrinsic ‘know-how’ is required. We have longevity in contracts, with some spanning ten years and more. This is because of our available management and services and our ability to understand the customer’s needs.”

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY Chris explains that as he has a finite territory and that the market itself cannot be expected to grow, but what is growing is the sector in which they provide services, an example would be the hospitality industry. “Saipan has passed a gambling law allowing hotels to offer casinos and there is a plan to break ground on US $7 billion worth of casinos,” Chris explains, “Best and Shine is a major gaming company in Makau who operate VIP lounges and gaming tables. They are looking at constructing five hotels, with a 2000 room total and a theme park.” This is a massive investment and Chris says that when you pour that kind of money into such a small island, there is a multiplying effect throughout all the supply industries that form the foundation for such developments to run on. Chris believes that Saipan will represent the next growth area, not just for G4S Guam but for the entire Micronesia chain because they may be small islands but they are all very closely interconnected.

HURDLES, CHALLENGES AND FOREIGN WORKERS One of the challenges immediately faced is that Saipan and Guam are predominantly dependent on foreign workers, in a number of industries. Guam is dependent on foreign engineers and

in several different sectors, we were able to take advantage of this growth area.” They have built a training centre and become an associate member of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, which sets the standard for hotel changes, “We created and built a facility in Saipan to start looking at training the local workforce to become highly skilled and qualified enough to fill that employment gap and in three or four years, all of that investment will pay off.” The first hotel will start operating this year and three others will open in two to three years, offering the opportunity to upgrade the islands from a foreign dominated workforce to one that is highly skilled and locally trained. This will not only affect G4S Guam and Micronesia, but the industry as a whole. Chris sees the hospitality industry as being one of the main focusses for the foreseeable future and as a spring from which many revenue streams, that will help bolster the economy of the islands, will flow. Cash flow and the movement of cash is a fundamental point within the casino industry. “We see our cash transit business growing as well,” he predicts, “You’re talking about gambling and tourism, which needs to be processed and sorted out. We are extremely optimistic that our future growth will be found in our hospitality and cash business.” This is not the only area that they are looking to for new revenue of course, as they are also working hard to position themselves to play a significant role in the military build-up and projects on the island and have, accordingly, set a small business aside to capitalise from them. CARRYING THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF A COUNTRY WRITTEN BY JACK SLATER

DHL Express was recently named as one of the first five companies in the world to be certified as a Top Employer Global 2015 and the only company to be certified in every continent around the world. This solidifies DHL as the global market leader in the logistics and transportation industry and “The logistics company for the world”.

In South Africa the business’ growth has, for a long

time, been focussed not only on expansion but consolidating old methodology with new so that their services, which are renowned, can also stay on the cutting edge of technology.

S

peaking with Managing Director of DHL Express South Africa, Hennie Heymans, it was clear that one of the focusses of South Africa is aimed at the development of not only the

business but also the country itself. Accessibility is important, Hennie explained over the phone to Endeavour Magazine. While DHL has a number of multinational companies as clients and facilitate the successful and timely movement of deliveries across the country and into the heart of Africa, there are a still a host of smaller businesses that can benefit greatly from their services. As one of the fastest growing nations on the African continent, South Africa has captured the global economy’s eye and money both from foreign investment and Government subsidies is coming in. This is creating opportunities for SMEs to gain footholds on new contracts and grow their own foundations. It makes sense, therefore, for DHL to make themselves accessible to the grass roots companies who will be the major players in the future. Heymans says, “Africa offers great opportunities for SME growth. According to Deloitte, Africa’s middle class has tripled over the last 30 years, and the current trajectory suggests that the African middle class will grow to 1.1 billion in 2060. As African economies are some of the fastest growing in the world, the outlook for the continent is very positive going forward.”. DHL Express offers tailor-made solutions to businesses in Africa

Founded in 2006 as a wholly Government owned company, Majis Industrial Services (Majis) was designed to create and look after every aspect of water utility services.

P

roviding infallible services to all industrial and other occupants of Oman’s largest port and petrochemical estate, found at the Sohar Industrial Port Area (SIPA), naturally required an

organisation that was as knowledgeable as it was forward thinking and proactive, not to mention fiscally stable. Ahmed Al Mazrouy quelled any fears about these elements, “Building, operating, maintaining and providing uninterrupted, reliable and cost effective water utility services to the industrial and port complex with over USD 15 billion in investment as a newly created Omani company is a challenge the company took upon itself. In several ways, it has been a challenging journey for Majis as there was no such model in Oman, of a one stop industrial water utility provider, to learn or replicate the experience from.” Leaping in at the deep end, Majis were far from just treading water and demonstrated not only a vision of excellence to operate in accordance with, but also the tenacity and ability to remain consistently fluid and adaptive to new innovations and ideas. “Majis initially, and until 2010, operated its infrastructure through a local contractor. This contract was essentially a manpower supply contract with no performance obligation on the contractor. The water utility services Majis provides to industries are critical, to the extent that an unplanned service outage could lead to significant losses and create associated problems of re-start up, following the unplanned shutdown. There was an indication that there will be a need for a central effluent treatment and recycling facility, in time, to handle effluents that could be complex with the refinery, petrochemical and metal businesses carried out

Veolia and Majis – a successful partnership Majis Industrial Services is one of the leading companies at water utilities in the Sultanate of Oman. Together with Veolia, it runs and maintains water extraction and distribution facilities that provide water and wastewater services to the industrial users of the port of Sohar whose location and role are so closely linked to the country’s future. So as to meet the demands of this rapidly developing port area and increase the quality of its services, the Omani company decided to benefit from Veolia’s expertise in water utilities aspects and get strategic management support. Corporate Social Responsibility is at the heart of the partnership between Majis and Veolia. Together, we strengthen ties with the local communities through university partnerships and educational programs, accompanied by awareness-raising actions.

AUTOMOTIVES SKODA RAPID SPACEBACK: AWESOME RIDE WRITTEN BY JACK SLATER

Skoda’s description of this unassuming and city-sized car is “Simply Clever” but I would have gone more for “Fiercely Fun,” or “Unbelievably Economic”. However you want to describe it, this is a winning vehicle.

48 | Endeavour Magazine

This is one of those value-for-money buys that, just through sheer quality, will render you unable to drive anything else.

with Greentech technology, I was, at first, a little concerned as the drive up to Fife (my ultimate destination) was remarkably uneventful. The roads were clear, there was no congestion, no tractors, no 18-wheelers and few manic motor heads. Having hit a traffic bubble, I sat back and enjoyed the simplistic, economic design of the vehicle and its controls. Even when Skoda was not the most popular vehicle, and especially now that it has the manufacturing power of VW, I’ve always been a fan. I enjoy the simplicity of driving it, the way that everything is where it should be and just makes sense. I appreciate not having to read the manual to find out how to turn off the windscreen wipers or figure out how I can mute the Sat Nav voice. Every manufacturer seems to put certain little characteristics and gimmicks in their cars so that their drivers, inevitably, become reliant on them and find they can’t drive anything else, but not so with this.

HANDLING Gear shifting was smooth and agile, with enough technology supporting the drive to make it a pleasure but not so much as to make it boring. All in all, this car feels good to drive. You get a lot of power from the 1.2 litre engine, coupled with a lot of control and great mileage from your tank. While you won’t find the Dukes of Hazzard zipping around in it screaming out “Yeeeeehhhaaaaawwwws!”, you do have to keep an eye on the speedometer because it feels remarkably comfortable and smooth at 80 miles an hour and wants to go faster.

EXTERIOR The new sport exterior of the Rapid Spaceback exudes a dynamic elegance; it has a long rear window design, which creates

The tail end of the car features clear lines and creates a balanced and uncluttered impression. A black diffuser element equally underlines the horizontal orientation as well as the broad tail lights in the brand-typical ‘C’ shape design.

A SPACIOUS AND ATTRACTIVE INTERIOR It is a long enough journey from Norfolk, in the easterly bulge of England, to Fife, in Scotland, and I had a lot of time to appreciate

SAFETY FEATURES As you would expect of a Skoda, the Rapid Spaceback offers some brilliantly high levels of safety with front, side and head airbags, height-adjustable three-point safety belts with pretensioners and height-adjustable head restraints. ABS and ESC systems are also available as standard. Other active safety features available include front fog-lights with cornering functionality and hill-hold control.

the sensual, fun lines of the interior of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback. As is typical of all Skoda models, the interior of the new Rapid Spaceback offers a lot of space. Despite the exterior of the new model measuring 18cm less than the Rapid, passenger space is just as generous as in the car’s ‘big brother’. With lots of leg stretching room in the back and plenty of headroom, it highlights the intention and purpose of this car; to carry groups of people. The boot space is equally impressive, with a maximum capacity of 415 litres with the rear seats up and 1,380 litres with the rear seats down.

BITS OF CLEVERNESS ALL OVER Much the same as the Rapid model, which was the first to offer the “Simply Clever” features that helped build its reputation, the Rapid Spaceback includes the same, such as a handy ice scraper in the fuel filler cap, a double sided floor cover in the boot, a waste bin in the side door, a parking ticket holder, a multimedia device holder (which I won’t lie, I only realised that’s what it was when I read the brochure afterwards), cup holders for front and rear and a parcel shelf that can be stowed behind the rear seats. 50 | Endeavour Magazine

ENGINES AND EQUIPMENT The Rapid Spaceback is available in three petrol and two diesel engine options. The TSI petrol engines offer a great blend of power and torque combined with low CO2 and impressive fuel economy, whilst the 1.6 TDI CR 90PS GreenTech diesel engine emits just 99g/km of CO2. A wide range of equipment is also available as standard, including 15” Dakara steel wheels, manual air conditioning, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors and ESC (including ABS, MRS, ASR, EDS and HBA).

DRIVING PLEASURE AND CONFIDENCE At under £15,000 this would definitely be a great first time car, or the car of choice for a young businessman or woman looking to invest in a vehicle that would never let them down. This is doubly true if you have a city job or one where you find yourself driving into cities, as I had no problem finding a parking space and no concerns about the roads of Britain being too narrow.

However, there is an armrest that is positioned over the hand brake, which can be lifted up to sit between the driver and passenger seats, which is perfect for hitting your elbow on every time you want to handle the hand brake or change gears. Not limiting enough to be dangerous, I just couldn’t fathom what it was there for. And that’s the total sum of what I didn’t like about the car. Literally, that is it! The fuel economy is brilliant; I drove from Norfolk to Fife and a quarter of the way back on one tank of fuel before I filled up. At £55 for a full tank of petrol, that’s not bad and within those miles there was motorway and city road driving, to give you some perspective. It looks good too. There is no sacrifice of style or appearance here, with the strong angles at the rear that have come to signify rapid backs, mag wheels and that Skoda snout, it’s a proud and capable vehicle. Officially, I didn’t get the chance to take the car off road, so officially I cannot say how surprised I was that the Skoda Rapid Back, which is described as being a young family city car, handled the rough terrain of the Scottish borders well. I would also not be able to officially comment on how good the car looks with a thorough splash of fresh mud across the front and with drabs of heather caught in the grill.

THE NEW ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK IS AVAILABLE IN FOUR GENEROUSLY APPOINTED TRIM LEVELS: S, SE TECH, SE SPORT AND THE GREENLINE, WITH PRICES STARTING FROM JUST £14,500 OTR. Endeavour Magazine | 51

PUNCHING HIGH WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL

Dreaming big is what the Lian Beng Group does best and this habit has ingrained itself into its business culture. Having secured half a dozen construction projects, two years ago, worth a record figure of $750 million, they are proving that this is not a result of luck but determination and direction.

Endeavour Magazine | 67

LIAN BENG GROUP

Established in 1973, Lian Beng Group Ltd is one of Singapore’s major home-grown

building construction groups and one of the few which has integrated civil engineering and construction support service capabilities. When you take a moment to look at the business, it’s clear that today the main revenue generator at Lian Beng comes in the form of Lian Beng Construction, a wholly owned subsidiary that has grown and diversified from property development into support services for the industry.

To ensure that the rise in construction costs does not impact their efficiency Lian Beng Construction have insulated themselves

from this issue by training their own workers at their overseas training centre. They also keep at the cutting edge of new methodologies, technologies and innovations to remain not only ahead of the competition but also the curve. This leads into a series of core values that Lian Beng Group follow ardently. These include important piers like Teamwork, Integrity, Innovation, Excellence and Commitment. With these mandates forming their foundation Lian Beng has won accolades and awards such as the BCA Skilled Builders Competition. This competition, The BCA Green and Gracious Builder Scheme, was established to promote sustainable environmental protection and gracious practices in builders during the construction phase of projects. To be socially responsible, a builder should embrace sustainable environmental protection and gracious practices, while really engaging with this scheme. For the future, Lian Beng Construction will have to aim to secure even more construction projects to further drive its organic growth and strengthen its order book. The property development side of things will focus on working alongside the best and most suitable partners. Lian Beng has not only survived tough times during economic downturns and recessions, but has emerged stronger and it continues to grow thanks to its focus and attention to retaining an exemplar supply chain.

NIDCO WWW.NIDCO.CO.TT 001 868 627 9474

TEN YEARS OLD AND TEN TIMES AS STRONG WRITTEN BY JACK SLATER

NIDCO, the National Infrastructure Development Company Limited first opened its doors on January 11th, 2005 and were set up by the Government to implement the creation of infrastructure such as highways and roads, to help manage the fast growth seen within the economy of Trinidad and Tobago.

Endeavour Magazine | 71

NIDCO

One of several state institutions that have been put in place to help implement the Government’s capital work programme, AKA The Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP), NIDCO is focussed on developing and delivering a range of solutions to the country’s infrastructure challenges.

A

direct answer to the lack of major highways and roadways, bridges and culverts, damage to landslips, flood and coastal erosion and transport management, NIDCO has transformed

the face of Trinidad in just ten years. In an interview with Endeavour Magazine, Dr. Carson Charles, the President of NIDCO, expressed that it was the technical capacity and organisational structure that gives the company its competitive edge, “Unlike other agencies, we can deliver major civil engineering and transport initiatives specifically within the areas that are most needed at the moment.” These include the complete realm of project requirements, from procurement and contracts management, project planning and feasibility studies all the way through to development, execution and evaluation. When it comes to implementing the most important projects that promise to have the biggest impact on the highest number of people, you want to make sure that you have the right kind of company behind you. Since joining the company in July 2010, Carson has been directly influencing the growth of the company and the development of its strengths. This has proved to be a task that has definitely filled his plate. “I am responsible for leading the executing agency for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago’s infrastructure development programme for delivery of capital projects and also direct the affairs of the organisation in order to achieve the strategic objectives of developmental activities and programme management, which enables the Board of Directors to fulfil its governance function,” he explains, “As President, I also represent NIDCO and where so authorised, lead all international and local efforts in respect of financing, strategic initiatives and planning.” This includes the co-ordination of communications with various Government ministries, agencies and relevant customers to which NIDCO provides its services and to assure that its mission, programmes, products and services are consistently delivered to the satisfaction of stakeholders. 72 | Endeavour Magazine

ECONOMY AND COMMUNITY According to Carson, the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) has long recognised the need to invest heavily in infrastructure development in order to drive economic growth and to improve the quality of life of its citizens. This is evident in the fact that they traditionally spend anywhere between 5% and 8% of the country’s GDP on infrastructure development. NIDCO further safeguards this investment with the timely and cost-efficient delivery of projects that support economic activity and social inclusion. For example, in a 2014 interview with Endeavour, Carson highlighted the construction of a 47km highway that was aimed at opening up economic space within the southern region of the country at a cost of US$1.2billion. The project itself employs over 900 people from the local communities and provided stimulating commercial activity for numerous suppliers and subcontractors. In addition to infrastructure development projects, NIDCO has been given the mandate to establish and operate the Water Taxi Service. Introduced in 2008, Carson explains that this is an alternative inter-island and complementary mode of transportation for both citizens and visitors, “The objective of this major investment was to ease traffic congestion along major roadways,” he says, “The Water Taxi Service now transports an average of 2,000 passengers daily.”

GROWING PAINS Perhaps the area of greatest concern to NIDCO at this time, so says Carson, is its long-term financial sustainability, due primarily to the perennial problem of lack of funding for infrastructure development projects. Historically, infrastructure projects have been funded directly by the Government; either through the treasury or through guarantees. However, this approach to project financing is increasingly becoming unsustainable as the Government seeks to

development of its employees, relative to new skills, methods, procedures and technologies being used in their particular field. It is in NIDCO’s best interest to have qualified, well-trained staff and to accomplish this goal they have put in place planned training and development activities to provide staff with the necessary skills and behaviours to meet current and future job demands. NIDCO considers its efforts to be a partnership with its employees who must maintain primary responsibility and take the initiative in their own training and personal self-development. To assist individuals in their self-development efforts, supervisors and managers are responsible for training immediate subordinates to fulfil present job requirements and prepare them for future assignments. Management will create an environment supportive of these activities and conducive to progress. Investigation proved that in order to ensure appropriate expertise is available to staff requiring development, the Human Resource/Administration team has been given the responsibility for developing, maintaining and controlling appropriate training activities in line with their goals and objectives through in-house training programmes and engaging seminars. Continuous professional development in-house and via 74 | Endeavour Magazine

INTEGRATION OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN NIDCO procures goods and services primarily through a competitive solicitation process. In general, they are guided by the FIDIC rules for engaging contractors for construction projects and adhere to the principles of fairness, integrity, transparency and effective competition. In this respect, they maintain a register of approved pre-qualified bidders for various types of contracts and contract values. This register is updated periodically. Last time we spoke with Dr. Charles, we asked where most of their suppliers were sourced from and Carson explained that their National Highways Programme was being executed through the efforts of both local and foreign contractors. So essentially, they seek to deliver projects in a way that best achieves value for money. However, Carson said that in order to preserve the local economy, a percentage of local content is maintained in every contract.

WHAT’S HAPPENING The Company is now engaged in 23 landslips repairs contracts, which will be implemented within the next six months. The Ministry

of Works and Infrastructure has also advised that another 60 will

to be completed in the next five years and is estimated at TT$418M. The Flood Alleviation Programme is another new development at NIDCO. The key purpose is to improve the lives of persons working and living in areas in Trinidad, namely Caroni, Caparo and the South Oropouche River Basins. Arising out of feasibility studies of several river basins in Trinidad, a number of flood alleviation and water supply projects for both portable and irrigation are expected to be implemented within the next 12 months. These will comprise of detention basins, berms, river improvements etc. One key component of this project is the Port-of-Spain Flood Alleviation Project, which will be implemented with the support of the InterAmerican Development Bank. The Coastal Protection Programme is a 3-year project conceptualised to address coastal erosion and flooding along the coast line in Trinidad. The project is estimated at TT$152M. A Bridges Rehabilitation Programme, was also recently launched.

HOW WILL THIS IMPROVE THINGS? “As our project profile increases in both volume and complexity, NIDCO will be required to improve its cadre of professionals who will be directly responsible for ensuring that we meet our targets and commitments to our clients,” Caron explains and at a first glance, it’s clear that they are looking to expand the capacity of their engineering department with the recruitment of geo-technical specialists, structural engineers and additional civil engineers/ project managers. “We are also actively pursuing measures to improve our project management efficiency with the establishment of an enterprise resource planning system. This will enable us to integrate our procurement, accounting and programme management functions to achieve the required level of operational efficiency,” he wraps up.

It is a 6-year programme with an estimated budget of TT$400M (approximately US$62M), intended to see the reconstruction of 26

pressure piping, to name just a few, the importance of competent, committed staff cannot be underestimated. “Tekfen’s main principles are “doing the job you know” and “doing the job well”. These principles have served to protect the company from instability and unnecessary risks and made the selection and training of high quality individuals intensely important. We take no shortcuts, despite having approximately 3000 employees. To reach required quality, our most important concern is having experienced and well trained personnel. For that reason, Tekfen distributes key staff from its own sources, many of who have had long careers in the Group, allocating them to strategic positions based on the conditions in the various countries where we are active.” He goes on to further explain, “Managerial positions on our projects are usually filled by Turkish nationals. Depending on a project’s location and applicable regulations in that particular country, all other workers are selected, primarily, from locals.” Clearly, having an educated and experienced workforce is a huge advantage for any organisation, but what can make the difference between a truly engaged and invested employee and an individual merely completing a work day, is what the company offers back to them, in addition to a salary. Consider this; a company that regularly seeks to promote and support its staff will suffer far less from turnover than one who regularly brings in new members in senior positions, not to mention the fact that any company with a firm grasp on corporate social responsibility is, generally, considered to be worth working for. BACON ALARM CLOCK False sense of security. IT’s the oldest trick in the book. The Bacon Alarm Clock doesn’t get you chasing after it, doesn’t insist that you try to lure it down from the ceiling or stand where it tells you to. It just serves fresh bacon in the morning with a fresh coffee app if you like. It does this with a trusting smile and a twinkle in its eye but I promise you the whole time it is cooking the bacon for you in the morning it wants to pour that bubbling fat and oil all over your face while screeching manically. On the same note, don’t hit this one with a cricket bat. It gets messy and painful.

TRAVEL SET YOURSELF FREE IN AMERICA THIS APRIL BY SHANNAH LAUREN

Many people have an innate desire to be set free, whether it is from work, every day life, or just the natural aspects that keep us all grounded in our lives. We imagine ourselves as an Eagle, with a string attached to our leg, just looking upon what the world has to offer and dreaming of flying off to endless possibilities. Cut that string loose and fly your way over to the United States of America, the country where you will know you’re free. Here are four of the top places to visit in America, while you are exploring your new horizon!

Deep in the Nevada desert, in the laboratory where Julia works, things are out of control. describing the dilemmas he encountered on his

You Need to Be a Little Crazy is more of an advice book than a how-to book about creating a business plan, getting funding, hiring staff, etc. Instead, Moltz has written a guide that is filled with his personal experiences in startups and the lessons he learned while pursuing his dream of being his own boss. Not one to mince words, Moltz bares his soul and describes the courage entrepreneurs need to muster to make it through the difficult times to beat the odds. Most startups fail in only a few short years, so his words of wisdom serve as encouragement and coaching from someone who has been to the startup well and slaked his thirst on the bounty that awaits those willing to sacrifice 9-to-5 jobs in an effort to live boss-free.

‘Get a Job’ Despite his admission of lunacy, much of Moltz’s advice comes from a realist’s perspective. “If you want to financially keep up with your friends, make lots of money, or accumulate wealth, get a job,” he writes. For a book about startups, only someone who has succeeded at creating a few could have the gumption to tell his audience to look elsewhere for the riches they seek. But, for those willing to jump the hurdles of rational thinking, he offers tales from the trenches that can be vital to anyone hoping to avoid the pitfalls of setting out on the adventure of a business venture. After explaining the wrong reasons to start a business (you are unhappy in your job) and

way to success, Moltz prepares new entrepreneurs for the adventure about to take place. You Need to Be a Little Crazy is about finding your edge, your inner strength and motivation to brave the indifference of the free market economy. When you are in need of help, Moltz writes, a highspeed internet line and a cell phone to connect you to the team members with whom you work are the only comforts you really need.

Victories and Disappointments After you have chosen to dive into the murky waters of a business start-up, Moltz has plenty of advice and experience to offer, to help you rise through the haze. He writes that his search for the perfect formula for success has helped him identify two common elements: luck and timing. When describing luck, he explains that startups don’t typically sell people anything. Instead, they usually put themselves into a position so that when people are ready to buy, the business is there for them to choose. He explains that entrepreneurs must learn to accept business outcomes outside of their control. This means they need to celebrate their victories and transition through the disappointments. Moltz writes, “It is not a question of whether you fail as an entrepreneur, it is simply a question of when and how.” He explains that one of the keys to being happily successful as an entrepreneur is how you handle failure.
