A keystone in the development and strength of Troy Resources, partnering with other businesses has helped to achieve greater goals. The early 2000s were a very busy time for Troy Resources; in 2002 they commenced production at the Bulchina mine at their Sandstone Gold Project in western Australia and they also purchased the Goiás Velho Project in Brazil, where they concentrated their efforts on bringing this project into production, a task that was achieved in March 2003. The following year the sandstone deposit at the Bulchina mine ceased and the milling operation continued to process low-grade ore until early the following year, before it too closed shop. 2004

TROY RESOURCES In November 2006, Troy acquired the Andorinhas Gold Project in north Brazil from Agincourt Resources Limited, for US$10.14 million in cash, by purchasing all of the shares of Agincourt Resources do Brasil Ltda, which holds the Andorinhas Gold Project. “To enable production to commence in May 2008, Troy relocated the processing facility from Sertão to Andorinhas,” Ken explains, “Just 18 months after, the resource was then acquired with an initial capital cost of under US$20 million.” In May 2009 Troy acquired the Casposo gold and silver project in San Juan Province, Argentina and commenced development of the project in October of the same year, utilising a processing plant Troy had held in storage. First gold was poured in November 2010 and the official opening of the mine was held in late May 2011. In the second half of 2013, Troy completed the acquisition of

REPUTATION Troy has built a solid reputation for employing a highly capable team of senior managers, staff and consultants with an outstanding array of international and Australian experience and success. According to Ken, the company, that employs some 300 workers, is all about building people. It’s a case of training the staff to the best possible level, providing them with the best tools and directing them towards a shared goal. Never about micro-management, Troy Resources has the reputation for being an employer of choice for a reason, “Our staff and consultants offer an outstanding array of international and Australian experience and success.” In addition to their reputation as an employer, their reputation for fast track mine development, sweetened with low cost operations and strategic acquisitions, has given them a strategic

HICKS DEPOSIT Hicks will be developed as a series of four discrete pits along the Hicks line of mineralisation (see Figure below). Open pit mining will target higher grade, shallow mineralisation. The deepest pit, Stage 2, extends to 90m below natural surface. There is no overburden masking mineralisation at Hicks. Mining parameters will be the same as those used for designing the Smarts Pits.

Following the actual mining of the material, what follows is mineral processing and metallurigical testing; of course the end product does not just come out of the ground like that. Limited historical metallurgical test work for the Hicks deposit was conducted throughout the 90s by Cathedral Gold and Cambior, however, there is insufficient information to confirm that the metallurgical test work is representative of the entire deposit. The

DOF SUBSEA WWW.DOFSUBSEA.COM 0047 5618 1000

GROWTH UNBOUND WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL

DOF Subsea is state of the art. Having combined highly trained and supported professionals with the latest technology and equipment, not to mention having a purpose built fleet of cutting edge vessels to hand, the company has guaranteed their future. Add to this a solid business model and it’s clear just how they have risen to become the go-to name in the subsea industry. We spoke with Executive Vice President, North America; Marco Sclocchi regarding some of the new endeavours DOF Subsea are involved in.

Endeavour Magazine | 27

DOF SUBSEA

Offering services to the oil and gas industry across the entire

offshore life cycle, the formula for success has always been a simple but powerful one: delivering solutions to their customers. Marco, who was kind enough to find time in his busy schedule, spoke with me on the phone to explain that this has been the unifying vision for the business since the DOF Subsea division was established in 1994, after an acquisition of the main DOF Group.

“O

riginally, the company was a survey organisation and the goal of DOF Subsea was to expand the services into a fully integrated IMR and offshore services contractor

utilizing DOF Subsea’s fleet,” he explains, “This totally changed the company and in five years we grew from 43 employees to 214 and today we have three permanent locations within the Gulf of Mexico and an office in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.” He goes on to emphasise the business goals that were set at the very beginning, “It was a simple but all-encompassing global vision to become a first class offshore services provider.” To gain this mantle, the DOF Group has instigated a number of philosophies to safeguard the means by which the company grows. This includes a parameter on developing advantages. “This is a competitive industry and so you have to protect your advantages,” Marco explains, “One big advantage for us is that we have everything in-house; we run our own vessels, ROV surveys and Project Management and Engineering. Fully integrated, custom made and self-contained, it puts us into the position where we only sub-contract with suppliers that we foresee a benefit with, growth wise.” However, there are some occasions that call for flexibility and to gain advantages in new locations, DOF Subsea has learnt the value of adhering to the international laws and expectations of countries. Such is the case with the Jones Act in America. The Jones Act, introduced by Senator Wesley Jones and also known as the The Merchant Marine Act of 1920, is a federal statute that provides for the promotion and maintenance of the American merchant marines and it basically, ensures that cargo and marine commerce transported by water between US ports is carried on US vessels. DOF Subsea is a Norwegian business, so to ensure that they fell in line with the Jones Act they have invested into a long-

WHAT TO EXPECT? It isn’t a great period at the moment. The market has created many challenges for every company involved in it, but Marco believes that the downturn will prove to be beneficial as it will test the foundations of many businesses, forcing them to reassess what they are doing and how they are doing it. MAKING TRACKS AND PUSHING AHEAD WRITTEN BY DAEMON SANDS

Careering forward, things are definitely on track for Etihad Railway Network. Recently, the Minister of Public Works Abdullah Bel Haif Al Nuaimi revealed that the Government has released Dh700 million as an initial allotment for 628 kilometres of the network.

funding phase two of the project because of its immense strategic value and that every effort is being made to make sure that the project is delivered on time. The 628 kilometre long phase two of the project connects the 264-kilometre-long phase one to Musaffah and Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali in Dubai to the Saudi and Omani borders. Phase one, which was completed at a cost of Dh4.7 billion, runs between Shah and Habshan to Ruwais in Abu Dhabi and will create a much needed link for commerce, cargo and delivery. At a cost of Dh40 billion the 1,200 kilometre Etihad Rail line will link major industrial zones, cities and ports, connecting all the emirates of the UAE and will eventually connect with the 2,177 kilometre long GCC railway, which is currently being built and will link all six of the GCC states by rail for the very first time, providing an alternative to air or sea travel for both goods and passengers in the region. This was scheduled for full operation in 2018, however it has been hinted that a more realistic date for full operation would be 2020. One of the suggested reasons for the delay is the sinking oil prices, which have impacted on everyone. “It will not be a hindrance to such an important project,” Al Mazrouei says, “Slight delays may be caused by the oil price but it will not have any adverse or lasting impact on the project. It is too important to not complete,” Etihad Rail was established in June 2009 with a mandate to manage the development, construction and operation of the UAE’s national freight and passenger railway network. Al Mazrouei explains that its aim was to create a linkage between principle centres of population and industry, as well as connecting the six countries of the GCC, The Kingdom of Bahrain, The State of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and UAE. “Working in phases, we have kept to international standards,” he continues, “and this state-of-the-art network will act as a catalyst for economic growth and sustained social development. Once complete, the railway will redefine logistics and transport in the region.” 34 | Endeavour Magazine

OF FURTHER IMPORTANCE A project that is supplying work for thousands of people in the area, as well as creating a convenient and reliable connectivity also serves another purpose as it falls in line with the objective to further diversify the UAE economy, as set by the UAE Vision 2021 and Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. UAE Vision 2021 was launched by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at the closing of a Cabinet meeting in 2010. “The Vision aims to make the UAE among the best countries in the world by the Golden Jubilee of the Union,” Al Mazrouei explains, “and in order to translate the Vision into reality, its pillars have been mapped into six national priorities which represent the key focus sectors of government action in the coming years.”

NOT ONLY RAILS The network is not merely a series of railways and setting the ground for rail operations, the Ministry of Public Works is currently formulating federal rail regulations and have received approval from the cabinet to work on the law with expectations of having new regulations ratified by the Government. These new laws will cover various aspects of rail operations, as well as dealing with land acquisition and compensation. Setting the groundwork for the rail operations will see the launch of several rail projects, including Metro, high-speed rail and federal rail networks across the region, working alongside the UAE Federal Transport Authority and the ministry.

DEPTH OF THE PROJECT Considering the strength of the region’s road network, the standard with which the rail network will settle is expected to be very high, with the sort of bravado and reliability that has come to be expected from such projects.

In August 2011, Emirates Steel signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to also use the Etihad Rail as the main transportation mode for steel. The first phase of the railway network will include communication systems, construction of bridges and a railway depot at Mirfa. In June 2011, an MoU was signed by Etihad Rail and communications specialist Du for the development of an integrated telecommunication infrastructure of the railway project. Nasser Alsowaidi, the Chairman of the Board of Directors had a very reflective approach to it, “The Etihad Rail project represents a significant component of the country’s economic diversification and development and reflects the unity among the seven Emirates and the greater GCC region,” he says, “We at Etihad Rail are creating an entirely new means of transport for the UAE that will revolutionise the UAE’s physical and economic landscape and we are fully committed to fulfilling this vision and delivering prosperity, connectivity, efficiency and sustainability to the people of the UAE.”

ALSTONS SHIPPING WWW.ALSTONSSHIPPINGTT.COM 001 868 625 2201

SETTING A COURSE FOR SUCCESS WRITTEN BY AMY TOCKNELL

With big plans to grow and expand in the Caribbean market, Alstons Shipping Limited is well placed to enjoy its 110th anniversary. We spoke with Marketing Manager, Richard Logan, to find out how the company has navigated such a turbulent industry.

Endeavour Magazine | 39

ALSTONS SHIPPING

A significant extension of ANSA McAL Ltd, that was founded

in 1905, Alstons Shipping Limited has continuously demonstrated both a desire and ability to move with the times and progress. Not an organisation to merely rest on its laurels and the exemplar reputation of its parent company, it is the leading provider of brokerage, transportation and logistics services in its region.

R

ichard Logan, the company’s Marketing Manager, explained further, “The company came from very humble beginnings, offering chandlery services and was a department of a larger

We are also the oldest shipping company in Trinidad and Tobago, so we are rich in history and as the industry went through peaks and troughs we did the same as an organisation and are still here today, which is tantamount to the dedication and loyalty of staff both past and present.” It’s a monumentally humanitarian company that is happy to attribute its success to the team that made it happen, rather than gleaning the glory for a faceless brand and reputation, but that is Alstons Shipping limited at its very core. Steeped in local heritage and an intrinsic understanding of the local economy and commercial needs, there can be nobody better equipped to provide an inclusive and exemplar logistics service. With a fortuitous locale and a deep understanding of the market it occupies, Alstons Shipping limited looks set to be able to navigate even the choppiest of waters, but how is the industry, as a whole, given recent financial turbulence? Richard explains, “The industry is very challenging and there are many competitors in Trinidad and Tobago. This makes maintaining clientele a major

Richard lets us in on a few innovations, “We are looking to acquire a warehouse, in order to offer clients LCL services for both imports and exports. In addition, we will also be promoting our customs clearance service locally, to wider crosssection of commercial clients. These two developments will require investment in both a capital and human resources sense.” And invest they will, as there is a clear understanding that these diversifications will allow the company to truly offer the “one stop shop” service that Richard and his team are so keen on. PRINT IS NOT DEAD WRITTEN BY M. PARKER

It’s not all about online publishing these days, thanks to a select few companies keeping the heritage and tradition of print media alive. Novus Holdings is one such organization.

customer-centred approach, whilst offering a broad range of services from one central source.” But what if you are close to one plant, but need to get information to another? Novus Holdings has thought of that too. Not content with a vast network of specialist operation sites, they have a fully integrated communication system in place too, “Digital integration of the pre-press departments provides seamless transfer of files between plants, facilitating the printing of one product in different locations, on identical platforms, where it suits our customers best. This reduces distribution costs and turnaround times, minimising our carbon footprint.” We were staggered too, that a company dealing, primarily, with a disposable item would be genuinely concerned about reducing the environmental impact they are having, but that is the result of a deeply committed and future-savvy management structure, but what is looming in the future for these giants of industry? “Novus Holdings seeks to unlock the potential of Africa through printing and associated services, to the benefit of our customers and shareholders. We will achieve this by building on a strong foundation; growing and evolving through new opportunities and taking the lead as the most technologically advanced manufacturing operation on the continent.” No beating around the bush here. Novus Holdings is gearing itself up to not only be the undisputed print media market leader, but to remain there indefinitely, but is print a dying market? With new technologies consistently emerging, all of which appear to be favouring a digital format, does traditional print format have a shelf life? “Print will continue to be the core business of Novus Holdings, while we exploit opportunities for organic growth in our manufacturing environment. Acquisitions will continue to be part of our expansion strategy, along with expansion of new and innovative product lines.” Essentially, come what may, Novus Holdings will be able to not only tackle, but master new developments and initiatives with grace and seamless integration, all the while keeping a focus on what is important to them; their locality, “As an African company, we recognise that the key to our success is inextricably linked to growth in the African market, which is why Novus Holdings supports initiatives in the education and Governmental sectors.” A large corporation steeped in tradition and integrity, Novus holdings looks set to continue its legacy within a framework of diversification and Corporate Social Responsibility. By building on its expertise and remaining at the forefront of all new industry innovations, we have no doubt that Novus will be celebrating many years as the kings of print media. THE CUSTOMER IS KING WRITTEN BY AMY TOCKNELL

Part of a global logistics phenomenon, DHL International Nigeria is going from strength to strength and we spoke with Chrys Okereke, Country Commercial Manager, to find out how.

Endeavour Magazine | 49

DHL NIGERIA

If you haven’t heard of DHL, you may have been living under a rock

for the past three decades. One of the most recognised and trusted brands in the global marketplace; DHL has been consistently raising the bar of the logistics industry, while striving to invest in green solutions for a sustainable future and economy. Sound too good to be true? Well it isn’t. Fully committed to both their environmental and professional responsibilities, this is one organisation that truly is in a league of its own.

S

peaking with Chrys Okereke, Country Commercial Manager for DHL International Nigeria, it begins to become clear just how the company has self-propelled to such incredible

heights, “We were founded in 1978 and since our inception, we have focused on the same interests and principles. We have always moved with the times and addressed new customer needs, but within the parameters of our original specialist area, meaning that we have never diluted our talents.” He goes on to clarify further, “Our key focus areas are the same now as they were in 1978, so logistics and express deliveries and just like back then, customer satisfaction is our number one benchmarking tool.” With a 40th anniversary in the not too distant future, there will be no ‘life begins at 40’ adages being thrown around as, clearly, DHL International Nigeria came alive the second it was founded, thanks to a solid foundation of sensitivity to customer needs. It has almost become a trite response for organisations to claim that the satisfaction of the customers is the sole thing that drives them, but when speaking to Chrys, there is no doubt whatsoever that this is absolutely the case for him and his team. Discussing the everyday business activities of DHL International Nigeria, it becomes clear that the desire for customer satisfaction permeates every facet of the organisation, “We actively visit companies to collect parcels and documents, before distributing them to their destination, whether that is within the country or over borders, plus we recognise that remote areas have a need to transport items into Nigeria, so we offer that service too. NOVEL: THE MATERIALS AND COLOURS

POWERFUL EFFICIENCY Powerful on the road, superior in light terrain and always efficient, the technology in the Audi prologue allroad offers the ultimate in automotive freedom. The 4.0 TFSI engine – a V8 with twin turbochargers – and the electric motor integrated into the eight-speed tiptronic produce 734 PS of system power and 900 Nm (663.8 lb-ft) of system torque. The quattro all-wheel drive system utilises the power of the Audi Prologue allroad perfectly in every situation. The show car rockets from 0 to 62mph in 3.5 seconds, yet is capable of achieving up to 117mpg according to the NEDC standard for plug-in hybrids, which corresponds to 56 grams CO2 per km. The lithium-ion battery mounted in the rear of the car has a capacity of 14.1 kWh for a purely electric range of 33 miles. The photographs are of the first engineering mule, which will be seen on public roads this week. This early engineering mule, based on a shortened Phantom Series II body, has been created purely to begin the development of an all-wheel drive suspension system that will deliver a ride that will be ‘Effortless… Everywhere’. The body may hint at the size of the new car, but it features no design aspects of the eventual highsided, all-terrain motor car announced by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in February this year. The mule rides on the first iteration of an all-new suspension that will assist Rolls-Royce engineers in developing a final all-wheel drive system that delivers Rolls-Royce’s hallmark ‘magic-carpet’ ride not only on the road, but off-road too. The first series of tests will focus on Project Cullinan’s on-road behaviour from suspension throw to high-bodied stability and will test the new suspension across all types of international road surface specifications at test facilities, as well as on public roads. Test surfaces will include; Belgian Pavé, cobblestones, corrugated concrete, noise development and measurement surfaces, resonance road and acceleration bumps. Project Cullinan engineering mules will spend equal amounts of time testing on-road and off-road to ensure that the customer will experience the same unrivalled ride quality on loose surfaces and challenging terrain as they do on the road today.

KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL

Armed with a strong focus, a passion for provision and the strength that comes with well-trained staff, NV GEBE has implemented a turn-about change, driven by the vision of Managing Director Mr. Romelio Maduro.

energy production and distribution. Since being charged with energy distribution, NV GEBE has strived to improve its energy efficiency through the introduction of several new innovations and with the inclusion of Mr. Maduro’s vision for the company, more emphasis has been placed on waste management and reduction of water and energy loss, as well as sustainability. The company has significantly increased its water distribution capabilities and today boasts the ability to reach high terrains with water and energy supply.

BUSINESS Today, NV GEBE concentrates on electricity supply to the entire Dutch St. Maarten, as well as water management to the island. There are presently three water production facilities which are being managed by NV GEBE. The distribution network for the water supply, as well as the supply of energy, is built and managed exclusively by NV GEBE. Each year, with new water tanks, the company has a water storage capability of up to almost three and a half days while its energy efficiency has grown to the point that it has been consistently producing about 1,500 kWh to over 20,000 customers per month.

EMPLOYEES NV GEBE committed itself, through its new vision, to pursue all avenues to serve the community of St. Maarten with alternative energy sources. “When these new systems are introduced, we would require special capital funding to train our three hundred staff to deal with these new technologies,” Mr Maduro reveals, “Particularly for the larger capital Investments, NV GEBE will have an operations and maintenance programme, which will include training of personnel for specific investment projects.” Mr. Maduro goes on to explain, that the training will be provided by qualified trainers who will issue certificates of successful completion to staff and that at present their training is concentrated on improving the existing operation of the company. The retraining session is also being introduced along with policies

and procedures to create a more service-minded environment. “Development of our staff is one of three strategic priorities that have been identified by the managing team of the company,” he goes on, “The other two are commercial and marketing, but human resource development will be the key.” Always committed to the development of their team, as is

been able to achieve higher performance levels through continued focus on human resources. Individual promotions have been part of the pride and legacy of the company for over 55-years and NV GEBE are dedicated to continuing to ensure that they create job security and opportunities for their team.

COMPETITION Although at present NV GEBE has the monopoly on energy production, they have been studying the changing global trends and looking at the higher customer expectations and this has been an energising element to challenge the status quo and review their current strategic ambitions.

PARTNER RELATIONSHIPS At NV GEBE they always maintain an open line of communication with all of their suppliers and place great emphasis on transparency. This is especially the case for the suppliers of their main product: crude oil. Mr. Maduro reveals that in keeping with this trend they are cognisant of the fact that their future ambitions will mean dealing with different suppliers and creating new relationships for renewable energy solutions. In particular, LPG and LNG are two key products that will be considered as part of their future strategic plan. This observation takes into consideration the fact that heavy fuel oil and light fuel oil will not be able to compete in the near future with gas, due to the changes in global environmental regulations. At present, it is pleasing to see 2015 bringing crude oil prices to an all-time low of USD$41.00 per barrel. “As a small player, country wise, in the petroleum purchasing business, our attitude is simply to benefit from this lower price as

service to our customers.” www.dyka.com

NEW DEVELOPMENTS FOR 2015/2016 AND BEYOND Naturally, with the many advances in energy, NV GEBE will again go through change, this time evolving its role from an energy production and distribution company to becoming an energy management company. According to Mr. Maduro, they cannot stop the global transition to renewable energy so as a business they must embrace it and be part of the change, bringing renewable solar energy at economically feasible costs to consumers and making that part of their core operational values. Part of this overall goal of course is to operate without waste. Realistically, zero waste is a global challenge for energy producers and energy managing companies and NV GEBE have come up with some creative management strategies to deal with waste and have seen major reductions in waste at the Cay Bay Power Plant. The waste hierarchy sets the agenda for resource efficiency, with waste prevention as the highest priority followed by preparation for re-use and recycling. With this in mind, NV GEBE’s comprehensive waste prevention plan will be consistently monitored and improved upon.

“Our Team has a clear understanding on what we are aiming for, while working towards resource efficiency,” he says, “With waste management, the question of recovery is of course one that NV GEBE must answer. We will do these things responsibly, producing waste to energy management systems, creating smarter city grids for energy distribution and management, ensuring our water grid is protected and secure with proper testing standards as well as ensuring our reach to the high lying areas and our ability to supply the increasing number of customers both residential and commercial.” There are certain mandates that must be followed with this and stipulations set in place to protect the community as well as the individual. As an example, if a customer, commercial or residential, generates their own power through solar energy, they have to still be connected to the grid by law. It falls under NV GEBE’s responsibility to ensure that the letter is always followed. Therefore the next step will be addressing their ability to manage the energy produced and this requires investment, “It is through innovations like these that we will show the true beneficiaries of the work we will do over the next five years to be the consumer and country.” He concludes.

UGANDA NATIONAL ROADS AUTHORITY WWW.UNRA.GO.UG 00256 312 233 100

OPEN ROADS WRITTEN BY JACK SLATER

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), is a Government road development and maintenance agency mandated to advise the Government on general roads policies and contribute to the addressing of national transport concerns. UNRA is charged with the selection of contractors, supervision of construction, scheduling of maintenance and the prioritisation of national road works. Other designated agencies are responsible for district, urban and community access roads.

Endeavour Magazine | 67

UGANDA NATIONAL ROADS AUTHORITY

Established through an act of parliament, UNRA became

operational on July 1st 2008, with the mandate of developing and maintaining the national roads network, advising the Government on policies and addressing transport concerns originating from the public.

I

n 1996, the Government of Uganda prepared the 10-year RSDP the Road Sector Development Programme and UNRA was one of the products of the Road Sector Reforms. Reviewed and updated

in 2002, making it a 10-Year RSDP Phase 2, one of the objectives was to establish a robust administration for efficient management of the national roads network. This was an important step in the development of the country’s infrastructure, which previously had been one of the major hindrances working against foreign investment into local projects that could not get off the ground due to an unsuitable and at times, dangerous road network. To achieve this objective the Government committed itself to reform the management of the national roads through the autonomous, performance-based Road Authority to handle road admin and executive function. This coincided with a restructuring of the Ministry of Works and Transportation, AKA MoWT and included a focus on police setting standards, regulation, monitoring and evaluation of functions.

THE ACT THAT LED TO THE UGANDA NATIONAL ROAD AUTHORITY As part of the reform process, in 1998 the Road Agency Formation Unit (RAFU) was created as a semi-autonomous agency within the MoWT to manage the national roads development. In 2002, a study was conducted into the establishment of an autonomous Road Authority. The findings of the study informed the drafting of the Bill for creating the Uganda National Roads Authority. The Bill was passed by the Parliament of Uganda in May 2006 and was signed into Law by the President in June 2006. The Board of Directors (BODs) was appointed the following year, January 2007. Thereafter, the Executive Director was appointed in November2007 and UNRA became fully operational on 1st July 2008. 68 | Endeavour Magazine

SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IS WHAT WE NEED WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL

Speaking with Carlo Cepollina, the General Manager of Pola Maris, it’s very clear that this Antwerp-based company has plans for the future. In a nutshell, Pola Maritime are ready to order more vessels but are waiting for the price of new builds to drop.

Endeavour Magazine | 75

POLA MARIS

Pola Maris commercially represents Pola Maritime, a Belgian/Russianowned private company established in 2006, in Cyprus, as an entity backed by experienced shareholding interests in the dry bulk shipping industry. Known for operating in high end, niche markets, Pola Maris specialises in difficult trades and shipping under the harshest, coldest, most restricted, time pressured and extreme conditions in the world. They operate everywhere, from the coldest Russian winters to the shallowest river ports in South America.

C

arlo explains that the company’s growth is waiting simply for the dry bulk market to recover, “Then once the Chinese shipyards return to reasonable prices, our plan will be to order

other new builds in order to reach a fleet of 20 owned handysize bulk carriers. After that, we will focus on the second step of the business strategy, which includes handymax and panamax ships”. Finding themselves in a strong position, it is the plan to be patient and wait for the best moment to further expand their fleet, which will also include a number of other ships for different sectors including barges, tankers and fishing vessels. Carlo explains, “Pola’s plans are to expand the fleet with more long-term chartered-in tonnage and to acquire further tonnage either via S&P deals or strategic partnerships,” At the moment the company operates some 20 ships, mainly 37,000 dwt handysizes, in a mix of owned and chartered tonnage. It has also branched out into panamaxes as well. Carlo reveals that all of the vessels owned by Pola Maritime are open hatch/boxed shaped and ice class, able to take on challenging routes, cargoes and contracts as well as being spot minded, “Pola Maritime has been steadily increasing its presence in the Atlantic basin since 2011.” He goes on to reveal that fleet activity is mainly focused on the transportation of steel, coal, grains, fertilisers, mineral cargoes and soybeans from transatlantic trades from the Baltic Sea to the east coast of the US and South America. Furthermore, Carlo points out that last year, in 2014, Pola ships were responsible for carrying almost three million tons of cargo. This in turn generated a turnover of $90 million thanks to stable business relationships that are shared with the shippers from Eastern Europe such as Severstal Steel, but also other major players such as Eurochem, Sodrugestvo Trading, BPC, Uralkaliy, Rio Tinto, Glencore, Rusal, Nidera/Transgrain, Cargill, Bunge and Noble. “Our clients are seeking a unique skill set, specifically a

competency in shallow draft ice class handysize designs that are able to operate in a variety of waters,” he explains. Looking at the future of the dry bulk market, Cepollina prefers not to make forecasts since all the previsions made by many experts have been denied, “With the current market fluctuation it is really

hard to predict what will happen but Pola Maritime just requires a slight upward correction in freight rates to operate in profit.” The fleet, he goes on to explain, has been acquired under low cyclical prices, giving the company what he calls an “excellent” risk management position. “Additionally, we focus on developing nations where semi-processed and raw material play an important role in their trades,” he adds, “We usually load carry iron ore, coal, aluminum, steels, agricultural products, fertilisers, dangerous goods under voyages, time charters or COAs.” The company consistently extracts significant value from its operations as freight rates and asset values are improving with an overall economic recovery and at the same, it offers a reliable service with competitive prices to their clients. The company’s real strength comes from the manner in which they approach their work. Further growth will come as and when the market has given sign of recovery and Pola Maritime will be ready for the next stage of investments. Presently, new orders with Chinese shipbuilders

had already been put in place but the process was halted with the collapse of the dry bulk segment, when new build prices remained obstinately high. “When freight rates soar, Chinese shipyards will return to quoting handysize new builds at reasonable prices, which is below $20 million,” says Carlo, “We are interested and ready to sign new contracts for building handysize bulk carriers, but we are patient.” It is patience that makes Pola Martime the business it is. Patience requires not only a secure footing and sure understanding of an industry, but also a long-term vision that coordinates everything into the right direction. Pola Maritime has access to several capital providers from Russia and Asia. Last year Gazprombank started to finance Pola with a non-revolving credit line of $91.2m for the construction of six bulk carriers, the Seahorse 375 series, built by China’s Qingshan Shipyard. Gazprombank mediated the finance project with recourse to the existing business and by attracting funding from the ExportImport Bank of China. Each vessel was approved for a direct long-

direct answer to the lack of major highways and roadways, bridges and culverts, damage to landslips, flood and coastal erosion and transport management, NIDCO has transformed

the face of Trinidad in just ten years. In an interview with Endeavour Magazine, Dr. Carson Charles, the President of NIDCO, expressed that it was the technical capacity and organisational structure that gives the company its competitive edge, “Unlike other agencies, we can deliver major civil engineering and transport initiatives specifically within the areas that are most needed at the moment.” These include the complete realm of project requirements, from procurement and contracts management, project planning and feasibility studies all the way through to development, execution and evaluation. When it comes to implementing the most important projects that promise to have the biggest impact on the highest number of people, you want to make sure that you have the right kind of company behind you. Since joining the company in July 2010, Carson has been directly influencing the growth of the company and the development of its strengths. This has proved to be a task that has definitely filled his plate. “I am responsible for leading the executing agency for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago’s infrastructure development programme for delivery of capital projects and also direct the affairs of the organisation in order to achieve the strategic objectives of developmental activities and programme management, which enables the Board of Directors to fulfil its governance function,” he explains, “As President, I also represent NIDCO and where so authorised, lead all international and local efforts in respect of financing, strategic initiatives and planning.” This includes the co-ordination of communications with various Government ministries, agencies and relevant customers to which NIDCO provides its services and to assure that its mission, programmes, products and services are consistently delivered to the satisfaction of stakeholders. 86 | Endeavour Magazine

ECONOMY AND COMMUNITY According to Carson, the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) has long recognised the need to invest heavily in infrastructure development in order to drive economic growth and to improve the quality of life of its citizens. This is evident in the fact that they traditionally spend anywhere between 5% and 8% of the country’s GDP on infrastructure development. NIDCO further safeguards this investment with the timely and cost-efficient delivery of projects that support economic activity and social inclusion. For example, in a 2014 interview with Endeavour, Carson highlighted the construction of a 47km highway that was aimed at opening up economic space within the southern region of the country at a cost of US$1.2billion. The project itself employs over 900 people from the local communities and provided stimulating commercial activity for numerous suppliers and subcontractors. In addition to infrastructure development projects, NIDCO has been given the mandate to establish and operate the Water Taxi Service. Introduced in 2008, Carson explains that this is an alternative inter-island and complementary mode of transportation for both citizens and visitors, “The objective of this major investment was to ease traffic congestion along major roadways,” he says, “The Water Taxi Service now transports an average of 2,000 passengers daily.”

GROWING PAINS Perhaps the area of greatest concern to NIDCO at this time, so says Carson, is its long-term financial sustainability, due primarily to the perennial problem of lack of funding for infrastructure development projects. Historically, infrastructure projects have been funded directly by the Government; either through the treasury or through guarantees. However, this approach to project financing is increasingly becoming unsustainable as the Government seeks to

development of its employees, relative to new skills, methods, procedures and technologies being used in their particular field. It is in NIDCO’s best interest to have qualified, well-trained staff and to accomplish this goal they have put in place planned training and development activities to provide staff with the necessary skills and behaviours to meet current and future job demands. NIDCO considers its efforts to be a partnership with its employees who must maintain primary responsibility and take the initiative in their own training and personal self-development. To assist individuals in their self-development efforts, supervisors and managers are responsible for training immediate subordinates to fulfil present job requirements and prepare them for future assignments. Management will create an environment supportive of these activities and conducive to progress. Investigation proved that in order to ensure appropriate expertise is available to staff requiring development, the Human Resource/Administration team has been given the responsibility for developing, maintaining and controlling appropriate training activities in line with their goals and objectives through in-house training programmes and engaging seminars. Continuous professional development in-house and via 88 | Endeavour Magazine

INTEGRATION OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN NIDCO procures goods and services primarily through a competitive solicitation process. In general, they are guided by the FIDIC rules for engaging contractors for construction projects and adhere to the principles of fairness, integrity, transparency and effective competition. In this respect, they maintain a register of approved pre-qualified bidders for various types of contracts and contract values. This register is updated periodically. Last time we spoke with Dr. Charles, we asked where most of their suppliers were sourced from and Carson explained that their National Highways Programme was being executed through the efforts of both local and foreign contractors. So essentially, they seek to deliver projects in a way that best achieves value for money. However, Carson said that in order to preserve the local economy, a percentage of local content is maintained in every contract.

WHAT’S HAPPENING The Company is now engaged in 23 landslips repairs contracts, which will be implemented within the next six months. The Ministry

to be completed in the next five years and is estimated at TT$418M. The Flood Alleviation Programme is another new development at NIDCO. The key purpose is to improve the lives of persons working and living in areas in Trinidad, namely Caroni, Caparo and the South Oropouche River Basins. Arising out of feasibility studies of several river basins in Trinidad, a number of flood alleviation and water supply projects for both portable and irrigation are expected to be implemented within the next 12 months. These will comprise of detention basins, berms, river improvements etc. One key component of this project is the Port-of-Spain Flood Alleviation Project, which will be implemented with the support of the InterAmerican Development Bank. The Coastal Protection Programme is a 3-year project conceptualised to address coastal erosion and flooding along the coast line in Trinidad. The project is estimated at TT$152M. A Bridges Rehabilitation Programme, was also recently launched.

HOW WILL THIS IMPROVE THINGS? “As our project profile increases in both volume and complexity, NIDCO will be required to improve its cadre of professionals who will be directly responsible for ensuring that we meet our targets and commitments to our clients,” Caron explains and at a first glance, it’s clear that they are looking to expand the capacity of their engineering department with the recruitment of geo-technical specialists, structural engineers and additional civil engineers/ project managers. “We are also actively pursuing measures to improve our project management efficiency with the establishment of an enterprise resource planning system. This will enable us to integrate our procurement, accounting and programme management functions to achieve the required level of operational efficiency,” he wraps up.

It is a 6-year programme with an estimated budget of TT$400M (approximately US$62M), intended to see the reconstruction of 26

WATER FOR ALL WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL

For a country to develop and grow economically and for people to be healthy, wealthy and wise there is a long list of essential things that need to be put in place. Roads need to be laid and maintained, schools and hospitals need to be built and telephone and Internet connectivity need to be established, but before any of this can occur, safe water needs to flow. Enter the state-owned municipal company, The National Water and Sewerage Corporation in Uganda, who have taken on the challenge of providing clean water and sanitation for its people. Endeavour was fortunate enough to speak with Managing Director, Dr. Silver Mugisha about the project.

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC)

Uganda is a Public Utility Company, completely owned by the Government of Uganda. Established in 1972, the corporation’s mandate is to operate and provide water and sewerage services in the areas entrusted to it, on a sound commercial and financially viable basis.

million people) in 2015. Furthermore, water service coverage in NWSC towns is estimated at 79% for which over 96 million m3 of water is produced per annum from 33 water treatment plants and 77 water production facilities, all distributed through over 8,000 km of water mains. Additionally, as Dr. Mugisha points out, NWSC operates 26 wastewater treatment facilities with a total sewer network length of more than 700 km. In total that’s a staggering 405,140 water connections, 19,300 sewer connections and a total work force of 2,473 staff. “The vision of NWSC,” he explains, “is to be a leading water utility in the world and our mission is to provide efficient and cost effective water and sewerage services using innovative managerial techniques and customised solutions for our customers.”

COURSE CHANGE AND MASSIVE GROWTH In November 2013, under the leadership of the Board and a new management team, the corporation changed its strategic focus and launched a 5-year strategic direction that provided the corporation with a new outlook and key strategic interventions, while taking into account the wider stakeholder expectations, policy directions and competitive environment. The strategic direction came at a time when the corporation was at cross roads with a good historical performance record, and a growing demand for services across the urban divide in Uganda, “The strategic direction was aimed at gearing the corporation up for transformational changes in its operational and geographical mandate, as well as highlighting the corporation’s contribution towards the national vision of transforming Uganda from a peasantry to a self-sustaining economy.” He adds that over the last two years, the corporation has

The Electronic Security System Division is managed by a former US Marine Ed Bitanga who was also the former Director for Guam Department of Correction. The list of accolades and titles truly illustrates the level of quality that Chris has included into his business and creates an almost frightening catalogue of professional expertise. He explains that these different skill sets have proved invaluable for the protecting of customers. Crime is a fast moving industry, one of the fastest to develop and the only way to forestall it, Chris explains, is to think and act faster, with better resources. “It is the depth of management and our experience which allows us to provide a stellar quality of service,” he says, “Intrinsic ‘know-how’ is required. We have longevity in contracts, with some spanning ten years and more. This is because of our available management and services and our ability to understand the customer’s needs.”

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY Chris explains that as he has a finite territory and that the market itself cannot be expected to grow, but what is growing is the sector in which they provide services, an example would be the hospitality industry. “Saipan has passed a gambling law allowing hotels to offer casinos and there is a plan to break ground on US $7 billion worth of casino hotel projects” Chris explains, “Best Sunshine is a major gaming company in Makau who operate VIP lounges and gaming tables. They are looking at constructing five hotels, with a 2000 rooms total and a theme park.” This is a massive investment and Chris says that when you pour that kind of money into such a small island, there is a multiplying effect throughout all the supply industries that form the foundation for such developments to run on. Chris believes that Saipan will represent the next growth area, not just for G4S Guam but for the entire Micronesia chain because they may be small islands but they are all very closely interconnected.

HURDLES, CHALLENGES AND FOREIGN WORKERS One of the challenges immediately faced is that Saipan and Guam are predominantly dependent on foreign workers, in a number of industries. Guam is dependent on foreign engineers and

in several different sectors, we were able to take advantage of this growth area.” They have built a training centre and become an associate member of the American Hotel and Lodging Association, which sets the standard for hotel changes, “We created and built a facility in Saipan to start looking at training the local workforce to become highly skilled and qualified enough to fill that employment gap and in three or four years, all of that investment will pay off.” The first hotel will start operating this year and three others will open in two to three years, offering the opportunity to upgrade the islands from a foreign dominated workforce to one that is highly skilled and locally trained. This will not only affect G4S Guam and Micronesia, but the industry as a whole. Chris sees the hospitality industry as being one of the main focusses for the foreseeable future and as a spring from which many revenue streams, that will help bolster the economy of the islands, will flow. Cash flow and the movement of cash is a fundamental point within the casino industry. “We see our cash transit business growing as well,” he predicts, He continues, “We are extremely optimistic that our future growth will be found in our Manned Services catering to the hospitality Industry and our Cash Solutions Business. This is not the only area that they are looking to for new revenue of course, as they are also working hard to position themselves to play a significant role in the military build-up and projects on the island and have, accordingly, set a small business aside to capitalise from them. GADGETS

Roberts Revival Blutune Radio The Roberts Revival DAB radio looks as retro as classic radios, but the DAB digital element and Bluetooth functionality inside set it apart. It’s a modern wolf in vintage clothing. There’s no way of hiding it, the Revival DAB radio looks stunning. With blue beading around the black leather exterior, simple tuning dials and antenna that tuck round the back, it’s an edgier take on a classic design. It’s all about attention to detail, from the embossed “Roberts” logo on the front, to the back that swings open, allowing you to access the radio’s inner workings. There’s even a headphone socket and carry handle – the same features as the classic radios of the fifties. The Revival DAB radio isn’t just what it says on the tin though. As well as DAB radio, you can also listen to music from your laptop, tablet or smartphone. It’s a radio and a Bluetooth speaker, which makes it truly multifunctional. At just over 15cm tall and 1.6kg heavy it’s easily portable, but the sound quality from the mono speaker is still good. The Roberts Revival DAB radio is a quality product and a stunning blend of old and new that looks, feels and sounds good.

Roberts Travel Pad It might sound like a notebook from the 1940s, but with wireless Bluetooth technology and clean, high-quality sound packed into a sleek design, the Roberts Travel Pad is anything but old-fashioned. The simple black design with a tactile rubber surround and Bluetooth, battery level and maximum volume indicators is neat and modern and even though it weighs just 336 grams, the Travel Pad fits in a range of up-to-the-minute features. Its HFP enables you to make hands-free calls and it supports both aptX and Bluetooth v4.0, the latest and best quality audio available with Bluetooth. It can memorise up to eight devices, meaning you can pair it with all your must haves, from compatible smartphones and tablets to your home PC and with a rechargeable battery, holding up to 12 hours’ life, it can keep going through even the wildest parties. That all sounds brilliant, but does the speaker? The sound quality is clear and open, but like most small speakers, it lacks some of the depth and richness that comes with quality bass tone. The Roberts Travel Pad might not quite hold its own against Thrash Metal, but it’s a highly portable and functional speaker and it looks pretty too. 110 | Endeavour Magazine

SleepPhones Claiming to be “the world’s most comfortable headphones for sleeping”, SleepPhones provide a comfortable, if deeply unfashionable, solution to the problem of getting to sleep when you share your bed with someone who snores but you love too much to kick out of bed. Unlike normal headphones or earphones, which are very uncomfortable to wear in bed, SleepPhones have thin speakers that fit next to your ears inside a fleece headband. So you can go wireless and escape strangulation in the night, SleepPhones are designed to be paired with a smartphone via Bluetooth, but you can buy cheaper, wired SleepPhones too. You can use them to play music, for meditation, as a personal alarm clock, or even to listen to the Harry Potter books – whatever sends you to sleep. Coming in a range of sizes, the fleece headband is very comfortable and can double up as an eye mask. But comfort isn’t the only feature as the headphones produce good quality sound, as well as blocking out external noise, which is important if they’re the only thing between you and a snoring partner. Simple but effective, SleepPhones are a sure-fire way to get a good night’s sleep.

TRAVEL THE TRAVELLERS DREAM: NEW ZEALAND BY SHANNAH LAUREN

Every year, we have a new favourite destination for travellers. Between third world countries and modernised European countries, you will hear about that “one” that the adventurers are boasting about. This year, New Zealand is the explorers hottest travel destination.

N

ew Zealand is becoming one of the best places in the world to travel to, in part because the danger factors are so low that it’s the perfect relaxing holiday. You don’t have any crazy

snakes to worry about, intense road complications, pickpockets, scam merchants and the food is known for being radiant rather than rancid. What else makes New Zealand so great? We’re here to tell you!

Food and Beer

The Activities When travelling to New Zealand, you can expect to experience a massive abundance of activities. As this country is known for its appeal to travellers, it’s one of the hottest places for active sports. You can go diving in the beautiful blue sea, or maybe try canoeing around the caves. You spend entire days fishing in relaxation and then follow it up with an exciting bout of jet skiing and kite surfing. Do you need a bit of a thrill in your life? You can try out rock climbing, shark cage diving or white-water rafting. Do you need a

knowing that the way to win the hearts of travellers is through their stomachs. Your appetite will be satisfied on this holiday and that’s a guarantee! The beer is known for being one of a kind and contributes to the atmosphere of New Zealand.

The Locals

The Language While New Zealand English is known for following British English, it has also borrowed much from Māori vernacular; therefore you may hear a few slang words or see gestures you’re not familiar with. A few examples are that a ‘dairy’ is a convenience

The ethos of New Zealand is so easy-going and as people say,

you’ll bring some back home with you!

The Views New Zealand has plenty to offer and the picturesque views are just a bonus. There are all sorts of different cultures and landscapes, that it will leave you continuously feeling amazed by what surrounds you. In many ways, New Zealand may remind you of England and this is why many British travellers actually end up immigrating to New Zealand to create a new forever home. Whilst travelling in New Zealand, we highly recommend you check out the Waitomo Caves, but there are all sorts of views available in the country, including lakes, mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and geysers.

The Weather The country, also known as, “God’s Own Country”, lives up to its godly expectations with brilliant weather although it is not uncommon to experience all four seasons in one day! New Zealand is renowned for it’s glorious sunshine and warm temperatures, especially in the summer. When travelling to New Zealand, it’s important to remember that the seasons are backwards to what you may be used to. The months of November through to March are summer, while the months of May through September are winter.

When travelling to the country of New Zealand, it’s important to look into the visitor visa regulations. British citizens and other British passport holders are allowed to stay for up to six months, while American or European Union members are only allowed up to three months. When visiting, it’s important to add that this does not include a permit to work. Although many British travellers fall in love with New Zealand so much that they are ready to move there, it’s important to visit under the right visa to do so. If you are interested in moving to NZ, I would suggest visiting first, getting an idea of what it would be like, then going back to home to get things in order to do so. It’s quite a common move for many British citizens, as it’s very familiar to home while also offering an island lifestyle. Whatever your trip entails, whether you’re looking for a new adventure or just a relaxing break, New Zealand is the perfect place for you. It has everything to offer, including great beer, good times, exciting people, glorious temperatures, an abundance of activities and godly sights to see, what more could you ask for? This is a country that satisfies all, enough to leave you considering it as your new home. See what all the fuss is about and book your trip to New Zealand.

That way, as snow is falling in your hometown, you can enjoy a pina colada on the beach in the 26-degree sunshine. Endeavour Magazine | 113

BOOKS

THE BEST OPENING LINES FROM BOOKS BY ANUSHREE NANDE First lines are crucial in any narrative, whether novels, films or novellas and especially short fiction. They are what decide whether you feel like reading or watching ahead, are gripped at the earliest stage possible and immediately engaged with the world of the narrative. Though I have read a fair few novels and watched a number of films whose opening lines/scenes though not special or different, have lead onto narratives that I enjoyed. However, you can never discount the impact of an opening, just as you can’t scoff at the need for a powerful, memorable ending. Here are a few of my favourites from all the books I have personally read. (In chronological order of book release)

114 | Endeavour Magazine

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife – Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (1813).

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. It was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity. It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness. It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair – Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities (1859).

Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way – Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina (1877).

You don’t know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but that ain’t no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly – Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).

All children, except one, grow up – J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan (1902).

As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin – Franz Kafka, Metamorphosis (1915).

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that means comfort – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit (1937).
