saw a post on Facebook just yesterday regarding how “outrageous” it was that the newly elected Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who is a Muslim, has had “Subhan Allah” put onto the buses coming
through the city. This was done to coincide with the holy month of Ramadan in June, when Muslims traditionally fast and give to charity. Within minutes of the plans being announced, Christians were in an uproar about this, as if some line had been crossed. Isn’t it the height of hypocrisy that people can think that it’s okay for us to celebrate Christmas and Easter, which are both purely Christian holidays and yet people should object to the ever-growing Muslim community in London celebrating their own religious period? Especially one so focussed on the discipline of self and, moreover, the giving to others. Also, there is no financial or monetary reward for these busses. It isn’t a commercialised banner trying to get us to spend money on gifts, food and cards for one of our holidays, so on that front at least it is purer than many of the other holidays celebrated in the city. The Mayor was elected and part of the reason is because he had specific plans to unite people, fostering a climate of tolerance, mutual respect and community, some of those important things that we are so quick to forget during the day-to-day slog. But, were people so short sighted that they didn’t see that his plan would actual require them to be tolerant, mutual respectful and part of a community? London is one of the financial hubs of the world and as such has the eyes of the world watching it at all times and it is an unfortunate situation that the world is seeing a city filled with people uninterested in being part of a global community and cold when it comes to celebrating the diversity which has made that city great.

HOW YOU DEAL WITH PEOPLE WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL
What is important, when it comes to airport management? This was the question posed to CEO of Finavia, Kari Savolainen, who revealed that smooth operations in the airport industry are not all about planes and terminals. Endeavour Magazine | 11

offs and landings. Their mission, Savolainen explains, is to create industry standards for competitiveness, mobility and international reach of the Finnish society by providing their customers with safe, high quality and cost effective air traffic services, “It is important that we always operate in an environmentally sustainable manner.” Helsinki Airport is the leading transit airport in Northern Europe for long-haul traffic and it connects Europe and Asia, via the shortest route. Thanks to transit travel, Helsinki Airport provides exceptionally comprehensive flight connections and given the population of Finland, over 20 million passengers fly via Finavia’s 22 airports, yearly. Helsinki Airport is definitely seeing the bulk of this. To put it into perspective; in 2015, Helsinki Airport served over 16 million passengers of that 20 million. A public limited company that is entirely owned by the Finnish State, Finavia services a swathe of customers in the airport and air flight industry. Airlines, aviation sector operators and passengers all rely on their services in one way or another. “Our vision is to be a profitably growing, internationally-oriented and well managed service company,” he says, “And the fulfilment of our service mission in an economically sustainable manner requires Helsinki Airport to be successful in Asian transit travel,” Helsinki Airport’s position as a leading transit airport

THE HUMAN ELEMENT Savolainen reveals that there are over 2,200 people working with Finavia, who are the direct ambassadors of the various services they offer, brought in to offer a Finnish dialect for Finnish passengers. “Over and above this, we also have two daughter companies; one deals with the ground handling at the airports and the other handles our real estate section, which includes adjacent hotels and services at the airports,” he says. According to Savolainen, the human element in Finavia is absolutely crucial to the business as a whole and as a corporation, a great deal of time and attention is placed on the professional development of their staff. This includes working hand in hand with their chosen representatives. “It is important to work and collaborate with the unions,” he says, “And to also listen to what they have to say and work to understand them. They are the voice of the staff and are there to make sure that everyone is happy. Happy unions, equal happy staff and, happy staff equals a better business.” Internal training is important, not only for those in the pipeline for management- who are shaped in the system step-by-step,

Wi-Fi, art galleries and sleeping pods will also be available. “In Developing the Helsinki Airport, we have kept Finnish design and architecture in mind. The use of glass and wooden elements brings lightness and a natural atmosphere into the terminal,”
A STRONG CUSTOMER FOCUS As an airport and airline services company, 60% of Finavia’s revenue comes directly from the airlines to which they offer services, while 40% comes from the passengers. However. as far as profit contribution is concerned, it flips it completely around as Savolainen explains. “We are a travel hub and it is important that passengers are treated well,” he says, “Let’s not forget that the airlines may fly the passengers, but they use our services and the local infrastructure of the businesses surrounding the airports to get here, check in, get comfortable and start their journeys.”
NEW DEVELOPMENTS Savolainen reveals that Finavia have very ambitious plans for the future and that these plans have already been put into action, “We are preparing Helsinki to cater for 20 million annual passengers by 2020,” he says. The Helsinki Airport is going through a large-scale expansion that aims to improve the airport’s facilities as well as strengthen its competitive position among the big European airports. The improvements are expected to take several years and Savolainen tells us that they’ve been working on them already for two years and things are going well. The development programme for the Helsinki Airport was launched in spring 2014, with the aim of major improvements being made in the airport’s services, facilities and traffic arrangements by 2020. The 64-year-old airport is going through its seventh expansion project, with heavy investments and an overall budget for the project of €900 million. “Over its lengthy history, the Helsinki Airport has been recognised with multiple awards and nominations that we take pride in. Through strategic planning, the airport has become the leading North-European airport and an important hub for layovers between Europe and Asia,” he says. In Europe, the Helsinki Airport has the most routes to Japan and comes in fifth in the number of Asian departures in a week. Currently, the Chinese are one of the biggest groups of passengers that pass through the Helsinki Airport and the number of Chinese nationals visiting the airport increased by 100,000 from 2014. The airport’s direct routes fly people to 135 destinations around the world. In addition to the extensive connection network,

describes head designer Tuomas Silvennoinen of PES Architects. Striving for top quality in design, facilities and services ensures a pleasant travelling experience for all passengers. The Helsinki Airport has a wide range of shops, restaurants and cafes that make it not just a quick transit hub, but rather, a place where each day numerous passengers from around the world can relax and look for facilities and services to pass time in between flights. By 2020, the Helsinki Airport expects to provide services for 20 million passengers annually. Savolainen explains that while this is not the first renovation of the airport, it is by far the biggest. In 2015, the airport went through its largest service revamp to date, as 70 totally new or renewed cafés, restaurants and shops were opened. The airport has a very high reliability record in terms of baggage handling, transfer flights,
short in-transit times and so-called “snow-how” knowledge. The current major renovation project will be carried out gradually. The terminal areas will be increased by 45% and the

At the heart of all Fragrance Du Bois’ creations is the 100% pure Oud oil, which is sustainably produced on the brand’s own plantations, managed by Asia Plantation Capital.” The world is about to be taken by storm, by the APC Group, but we don’t feel concerned by the monopoly of their industry that they are certain to enjoy. Rather, we are impressed to encounter a company that operates in accordance with such high levels of integrity and honesty and with sustainability at the core of everything they do, the future certainly looks bright and sweet smelling.

GOING TO TOWNE WRITTEN BY AMY TOCKNELL
A name that has become synonymous with enjoyable entertainment in the West Indies, MovieTowne is the epitome of a picture perfect company that is always looking to capitalise on an already incredible reputation. Endeavour Magazine spoke with Derek Chin, CEO. Endeavour Magazine | 23

A haven for holiday makers from all over the world, Trinidad and
Tobago already enjoys a strong tourism industry, but when government initiatives were drawn up to encourage a diversification in the way income was generated for the national economy, one man more than stepped up to the plate. That man was Derek Chin.
S
omething of an eccentric, Derek should not be underestimated, as his vision and commitment to make Trinidad and Tobago a world leader in the entertainment industry has propelled
the region forward. His experience as a key figure in both the Trinidad Commercial Development Company Limited and Dachin Enterprises, coupled with his vehement desire to always be pushing local business development has given him a keen and unique insight into what consumers want and what the economy needs, but he didn’t take any shortcuts when it cam to educating himself. Having completed a business administration degree at the University of Western Ontario and completed a stint as an auditor with KPMG, Canada, he returned to Trinidad back in 1981 with one goal; to revolutionise the video gaming industry, and boy did he accomplish that Speaking about the cinema industry in the region, he is candid about the humble beginnings; “The cinematic industry in Trinidad and Tobago was on its knees before MovieTowne came into being. People preferred DVD’s, VHS and Betamax at home to going to the

OPENING AND CLOSING DOORS WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL
Since the early 1980s, KLW Wood Products, a subsidiary of the KLW Group, has been a leading manufacturer and supplier of door-sets and related products. The combination of 75 years of wood working experience in the timber industry and 20 years of market experience in supplying their door sets to various markets, means that the company has firmly established itself as the business that is opening doors for the future. Doors are not only for keeping things in or out of a property.
Irrespective of culture, country or creed, the door is the first example of how you welcome people. The door to a prison will hopefully be different to the door of a family home and then there are the influences that shape the style and aesthetics of the doors that can affect everything from the decoration, thickness, size and quality of the wood.

our business and readjust our operations in order to raise our standards in sustainable practices as a business and to become a more environmentally conscious organisation in all aspects of our operations. Our sustainability drive applies to new ventures that we might embark on in the future. In fact, one area we are now looking at is reusing and recycling our waste materials, like wood off cuts and sawdust that we generate from our daily operations. Ideally, we want to become a zero-waste operation. Apart from the ISO certifications, both KLW Wood Products and Dongguan Lebex also have a Chain-of Custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which assures consumers that the wood originates from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations and that the flow of wood is tracked throughout the entire production process. This is in addition to the European Union Timber Regulation prohibiting the use of illegally harvested wood, which KLW already complies with in order to be a legal distributor

of wood products into Europe. In addition to its manufacturing operations in Malaysia and China, KLW’s wholly-owned subsidiary in Singapore, KLW Joinery Pte Ltd, engaged mainly in the supply and installation of wooden doors to the Singapore market, also has a Singapore Green Label award for using renewable and sustainable materials for its products available for sale in the Singapore market.
THE INDUSTRY There will always be a need for doors and this industry will continue to be profitable, regardless of the technological developments and creations of robotics. Like toilet paper and chairs, doors and door frames are an ever-present mainstay for humanity. While able to offer other wood products, KLW Wood Products do not need to thanks to the demand for their doors and the genuine need of their product. With housing and business premises developments on the rise, their phones are ringing off the hook and the output numbers mentioned above are only set to rise. So, it is reassuring that KLW Wood Products are so focussed on creating them out of waste materials to help protect the environment and to not make a drain on already stretched natural resources. It neatly illustrates the long term vision that this company has for themselves, having seen the need to proactively find a way to safeguard the environment through recycling, reconstituting and recreating. When the doors open in this industry, KLW Wood Products is behind them.

MINING THEIR OWN BUSINESS WRITTEN BY AMY TOCKNELL
Found in Madagascar, Ambatovy is a giant in the nickel and cobalt mining industry. Endeavour Magazine got up close and personal with this impressive organisation, to find out how they consistently manage to stay ahead of the competition, while exceeding expectations. Endeavour Magazine | 35
AMBATOVY MINES
Based in Madagascar, Ambatovy is a specialist in the field of
large-tonnage, long-life nickel and cobalt mining and are held in extremely high esteem within the competitive industry. The largest foreign investment to ever have been made into the country, at a total cost of US$8 billion, the accolades don’t stop there, as it is also one of the biggest nickel mining operations throughout the world, but that doesn’t mean that small considerations have been forgotten.
“A
mbatovy aims to be a leader in operational efficiency, health and safety, environmental management, and social engagement – while contributing to the long-term
prosperity of Madagascar.” Despite having a huge reputation, the finer details are never far from the minds of senior managers and with a clear directive to always be contributing to to the communities that they operate in. It’s this small operation thinking that has directly lead to them getting such huge recognition for all their commercial and social endeavours. “Ambatovy is already a major contributor to Madagascar’s national prosperity and a source of revenue for its people and government. During its lifetime, Ambatovy will generate important economic and social benefits through the payment of taxes and royalties, investment in infrastructure, job creation, local business development, and technology transfer as well as training, education, and health-related programmes.” Ambatovy is the result of three companies coming together with a plan; to work within parameters of transparency, responsibility and sustainability, which is no surprise given that the three owners herald from Canada, Japan and Korea. With corporations from such prestigious countries at the helm, there was always going to be a firm underpinning of good business practices and that is what makes Ambatovy so unique. There are no quick fixes, no shortcuts

FEEDING THE MINING INDUSTRY THE “PACKED MEAL PROBLEM” RESOLVED
D
elivering thousands of meals every day for those doing one of the toughest jobs on the planet can be transformed with a simple switch to a sustainable new meal delivery tray. This revolution in food quality and service has already taken place on Madagascar at Ambatovy mining project and is also taking off at Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia. The step change in food service came about because those behind the Ambatovy project are committed to contributing to sustainable development in Madagascar far into the future and long after they have left. And this commitment runs through to the smallest detail including adopting eco-friendly meal trays for the 1700 workers who need a healthy, nutritional meal three times a day. As Peter Prior of Bullseye, which developed the packed meal system, explains, “Miners work hard and deserve good food. When we were first approached for this project we identified a number of issues preventing not just a sustainable meal delivery but also affecting the quality of food and presentation. The oldfashioned plastic food trays they were using not only meant meals got cold quickly but were also difficult to transport and food became quickly messy and mixed together. The plastic was also not environmentally friendly.” Bullseye trays are made from eco-friendly paper pulp and the separate compartments sealed with film lids by Bullseye machines mean that food such as a typical three course lunch of meat, rice, salad and dessert can be delivered to even the remotest parts of the mine without affecting quality and presentation. In addition, before the new trays were introduced it was not possible to
include sauces or juices with food as these would run into other courses in transit. Now the meals, which are freshly made and packed in a central kitchen, can be sealed, stacked and shipped to workers without the problems of the past and with the big advantage that the used paper pulp trays can then be separated for recycling. The site catering team also developed a new range of menus especially for the new packaging and Bullseye worked directly with them to install the sealing machines, train the operators and organise the distribution process with insulated bags which they had created especially for the purpose. Since he launched his range of food trays in the UK, Peter Prior has captured markets in sectors ranging from care homes and meals-on-wheels to prison cells and environmentally conscious ready-meal makers. But the global reach of his web site is what led to the enquiry for a solution in Madagascar and the interest now goes even further. “We have just commenced service at the Oyu Tolgoi mine in the Southern Gobi desert where by 2021, around 6,000 workers will extract nearly half a million tonnes of copper and 425,000 ounces of gold every year”, says Peter Prior. “Suddenly even the most remote corporate operations are seeking the greenest route to feeding their employees and helping improve food quality as well.”

AUTOMOTIVES ‘MODERN MUMS’, MILLENNIALS AND ‘QUINTASTICS’ PROPEL FORD TO UK’S FASTEST-GROWING SUV BRAND WRITTEN BY JACK SLATER
O
fficially the fastest-growing SUV brand in the UK, Ford boasted 44,251 sales in 2015 which were 17,112 more than in 2014 To better understand this boom, Ford commissioned a
survey of 5,000 people across Europe and it revealed that nearly one in three mums with children still at home are thinking of buying an SUV, as are one in four of 17- to 34-year-olds and one in five of today’s generation of active 50-Somethings, dubbed ‘Quintastics’. SUVs are increasingly seen as fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly and attainable. Perceived as offering a stylish, safe family car for modern mums, a sexy choice for millennials and supporting active lifestyles for 50-somethings, the percentage of SUVs sold in Europe compared with total car sales has grown from 6 per cent in 2005, to 23 per cent in 2015 and is expected to rise further. “SUVs have grown from a tiny niche in Europe to one of the most significant automotive trends of the past decade,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “Every time someone predicts SUV sales will cool down, they are proven wrong. That’s because SUVs have widespread appeal with men and woman, young and older people.” What the survey has highlighted is that perception of SUVs has changed dramatically. Of those surveyed, 82 per cent say that SUVs are no longer just a luxury vehicle and have become more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly over the past five years.

BUILDING PROJECTS TO LAST WRITTEN BY DON CAMPBELL
Led by CEO Eng. Medhat El Dewary, Degla CFM offers professional construction project management services that are tailored to the size and complexity of any given project and backed by a corporate commitment of total quality management. Endeavour Magazine | 53
DEGLA CFM
The company Degla CFM brings substantial
management resources to all phases of construction project management, from identification, definition, development and planning to completion and closeout. With a keen understanding of how projects demand precise planning, experience, teamwork and expertise, they are able to provide a comprehensive outlook on every project from preliminary studies to planning, design, and finally construction.
54 | Endeavour Magazine
W
e spoke with Deputy CEO – Facility Management & Technology, Ahmed Maged Hosny, regarding what his company does and what it stands for.
“We began in 2007 as a professional construction project
management firm, committed to excellence and client satisfaction,” he explains, “And our comprehensive services are a natural extension of our experience and core skills.” Managing the construction process, according to Hosny, the process that Degla CFM rely on is more than merely keen overseeing. As said above, with a hands on approach, they manage the conceptual design phase throughout the project, carrying it through cost and budget controls, scheduling, estimating and expediting. It is as much about people management and so, on behalf of the client, they manage the swathe of contractors, subcontractors and suppliers required to make any construction project a success. It is more than merely satisfying the client’s needs at stake here, after all. Degla CFM has built itself a reputation over the last nine years and this is down to taking on projects as if they were their own and building them as if their name was at stake. This is very much the case of course, because the construction industry is led by the reputable businesses capable of not only completing by target time but also, more importantly, being able to do so within budget and as efficiently and as smoothly as possible. “We utilise our insight on behalf of our clients to proactively implement correcting and preventing actions to deliver a comprehensive project package and ensure your project is completed on time, to budget and to the required quality level,” he attests. It is apparent that the senior staff members of the company benefit from more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry and thus hold detailed knowledge and understanding of the contracting process. Experience is everything in the construction industry, Hosny tells us, “Our project management teams are built from people with the necessary backgrounds, qualifications and experience - be it related to quality, architecture, managerial, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical engineering, IT, or quantity surveying,” While it may appear that the main thrust of the company is punctual and satisfactory completion of projects this is not at the expense of their employee safety. Great measures are taken to ensure that their onsite staff are well versed and adherent to all safety regulations for that particular locale and that personal protection for oneself and for others is at the forefront of their minds. Risks are never worth it in the construction industry and every accident that has caused injury or death can be traced back to someone taking an unnecessary chance. These are not even careless risks. CB GROUP WWW.MYCBGROUP.COM 001 876 924 6000
RISING TO THE TOP WRITTEN BY AMY TOCKNELL
The CB Group has made light working of rising to the top of the Caribbean bakery industry. Endeavour Magazine spoke to the family members that still run this impressive operation to find out what it takes to enjoy such huge success. Endeavour Magazine | 59
CB GROUP
Despite the stratospheric rise to fame that the CB Group has
enjoyed over the past few decades, it hasn’t always been plain sailing, as Karl Hendrickson, company figurehead, once divulged that despite knowing how to bake, he had no idea how to run a company. Perhaps this is the ultimate example of passion overcoming shortcomings and learning ‘on the job’. With his desire to break down processes into their individual components in order to make them more efficient, however, Karl already had the recipe for success in his grasp.
S
tarting as a family-run company in Jamaica, the CB Group blossomed into the largest and undisputedly most allencompassing bakery in the region thanks to their wide variety
of breads, biscuits and buns. Sensing a dire need in the community for reliable food basics deliveries, they diversified into poultry processing and even a far-reaching agri-operation. This natural integration of other industries means that when a Jamaican family sits down to enjoy a family meal, there is more than a good chance that something on the table has been provided by the CB Group. Having been founded in the 1950s, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the company really picked up the pace. With a firm determination, the family-run company decided there was scope to further diversify their interests in the food industry, which lead to the creation of animal protein production subsidiaries, animal feed manufacturing and a much-lauded distribution network. It was this brave move that has shaped the CB Group as it stands today and has seen them propelled into the industry as the supplier of premier commercial livestock feed throughout Jamaica, but the organisation didn’t stop there. In fact, they were just getting started. Making significant investment into the tourism industry, in the form of hotel acquisitions, the CB Group is now in an enviable position, giving back to the region by way of creating numerous employment opportunities and stimulating the local economy. That’s what’s so admirable about this operation; nothing is done purely with commercial gain in mind, there is a genuine and insatiable desire to give back to the region that helped it to become

what we do, therefore becoming less dependent on international markets for raw materials.” While international support is most definitely something the company would like to move away from, in a bid to help Jamaica to really stand on its own two feet and become an independent business giant, branching out in a commercial sense into foreign markets is on the cards. Already, American, Canadian and British interests have been explored, with Amiel believing that tourists will appreciate the opportunity to taste food that invokes memories of treasured holidays. “Tourists that visit here should be able to take home some of the flavours they were exposed to, so expanding into herbs and spices as well as canned products should enable us to be in a strong position and broaden our exposure.” An upstanding, longstanding family enterprise, the CB Group shows no signs of slowing down for anybody and we know we’ll be hearing amazing things about them for years to come. It’s almost funny to think that this is a huge corporation that was started by a man who claimed to know nothing about business, when clearly, his approach is something many more set-ups should strive to emulate if they want to enjoy even a small slither of the success of his dream.

company was primarily interested in offshore and inter-continental deliveries, but the success of FedEx prompted their own intra-US expansion which began in 1983. DHL expanded to countries that could not be served by any other delivery service, including Cuba, the Soviet Union, Eastern Bloc, Iraq, Iran, China, Vietnam and North Korea. Development is in it’s very blood and in 1998, Deutsche Post began to acquire shares in DHL and finally reached majority ownership in 2001, completing the purchase in 2002. Deutsche Post then effectively absorbed DHL into its Express division, while expanding the use of the DHL brand to other Deutsche Post sectors, business units and subsidiaries. Today, DHL Express shares its DHL brand with other Deutsche Post business units, such as DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Supply Chain. One of these challenges would be the downturn of the industry in Ghana. due to macroeconomic factors and local content laws, as Paul Opoku general manager of DHL Ghana says, “We are affected by the rising cost of doing business as a result of ever rising electricity tariffs, fuel prices and other overheads.”

As a member of CIF, Nexus is in very good company. Included in the group are multi-national building and civil contractors, though the bulk consists of smaller contractors and SME’s. Members also include the retail and wholesale building material trade, along with many other manufacturers and suppliers of construction materials and equipment that serve the sector. It also represents specialist trades such as electricians, joiners, plumbers, painters and steelworkers, among others. Furthermore, as CIF is an autonomous, non-governmental and apolitical organisation, an Executive Committee comprised of volunteer members elected at the Federation’s annual general meeting governs the group and the committee is elected from a variety of construction-related sectors, thereby enabling the Federation to speak authoritatively on behalf of all its members.

Offering the full spectrum of management and professional skills at a principal level, Gachiku Kamau Architects is a young dynamic Namibian Architectural Consulting firm. A strong firm driven as much by the team as by its principal Gachiku Kamau, the company Gachiku Kamau Architects is witnessing a shifting in the landscape of architectural design. Having been involved in the industry for fifteen years and studied in Kenya, Spain and England, founder Gachiku Kamau has been fortunate enough to immerse herself in the best practises of these countries in order to bring them back to Nambia and her own company, which she set up in 2006. In particular, new developments in software have increased efficiency and productivity on a scale unmatched in Africa. “Fifteen years ago almost everyone worked in 2D platforms” she explains, “3D platforms existed, but it was largely inaccessible to all but the biggest firms. Today, many construction professionals in industrialized countries use 3D enabled software for their modeling. However in Namibia, few engineers andother building consultants have engaged completely with BIM (Building Information Modeling) enabled software, which would’ve have resulted in faster resolution of errors, better coordination between trades and more reliable calculations”. Having experienced it herself, Gachiku knows the importance of such software and technical developments and what they will offer to the industry back in Namibia, but she reveals that developments are slower back home with some consultants being reluctant to accept the changes in light of the cost of resources such changes will bring. “Implementing technology is easier for some than others,” she says, “But it is so important to be abreast of new developments to stay ahead of the competition and to get the most exciting projects,” It is also because such projects, as they are undertaking with Nexus, require a great deal of teamwork and when working in a team you have to work with documentation that everyone can understand fully.
GKA was commissioned to design the administration building and the inspector’s block and warehouse for the Oshikongo Inland Terminal and dry port. (pictured) currently under construction by Nexus Construction. The brief called for simple, sustainable buildings that would gel in well will the surroundings integrate well with the industrial and dynamic nature of a dry dock. It was however expected that the buildings would be able to stand out and define themselves strongly, for their intended administrative functions and offer humane workplaces for those occupying them. This has been achieved by the properly oriented building which is imperative for Namibia’s intense summers. In addition the allowance of cross ventilation and deep overhangs further enhance this and facilitate for an appealing internal climate. The choice of color and materials was not only

aesthetically driven but put into consideration the ease of maintenance, as well as the thermal property of each of the choices of materials adapted. Gachiku is confident that things will continue to shift and change as new technology becomes more accessible for companies and individuals alike. Being at the cutting edge is important for the architectural firm. Employing 16 full time staff, Gachiku surrounds herself with people of calibre and worth, not only those with the highest qualifications and experience, but also the eagerness to learn and work. “We work hard to create a supportive and engaging environment,” she says, “With a lot of emphasis on staff development, which I believe is crucial and one of the fundamentals of running a business.” She adds that some of her staff started work on temporary contracts and ended up remaining, others were students looking for experience and some were prominent and very qualified when they joined, all of which are promising signs when it comes to employee loyalty.

Ad Blocker Integrated Across Opera’s Mobile and Computer Browser - New Technology Significantly Increases Browser Speed A native ad blocker is integrated into both the stable version of the Opera browser for computers, as well as the Opera Mini browser for Android. Some 60 million people use Opera for computers, while almost 120 million people use Opera Mini for Android every month. These users no longer need to install an ad-blocking extension or download an app, to experience faster browsing. By integrating the ad-blocker technology directly into the browser code, the new Opera for computers speeds up page loading by as much as 89% compared to browsing without ad blocking.
New Opera Mini is 40% faster Ad blocking is also very useful on a mobile device, where online ads take up precious screen space and slow down the browsing. For cost-conscious mobile users, there is an added advantage to removing online ads and that is saving money on the data bill. Opera Mini is known for its compression technology, but by also blocking ads, Opera Mini users can achieve up to an additional 14% in data savings on top of that.
How to activate the native ad-block technology Opera Mini: Under the ‘O’ menu in Opera Mini, tap the data-savings summary. From there, simply toggle ‘block ads’ on and off. On Android, the ad blocker is available in both high- and extremesavings modes. Opera for computers:
Neuroon: A New Wearable Device That Helps Beat Jet Lag Stanford University study demonstrates effectiveness of light therapy in helping long-haul travellers to readjust their circadian rhythms. As the demand for air transport continues to grow and longdistance flights become increasingly commonplace, travellers are looking to cutting-edge technology to help combat the sleep disruption, fatigue and poor concentration that often accompanies jet lag. A recent study at Stanford University demonstrated how exposing a person to short flashes of light during sleep could be the secret to minimising these effects. Through manipulating levels of melatonin in the body, there was a significant speed-up in the process of the body adjusting to its rescheduled circadian rhythm. Using this principle, Neuroon is a revolutionary wearable device that launched in December 2015, providing jet lag therapy for its user. Through

wanderlust to Thailand’s turquoise shores. It seems travellers are still striving to find their own slice of paradise and authentic castaway experience. The question is, 20 years on (and swathes of tourists later), can Thailand still offer it? And is it possible to visit this beautiful destination in a way that doesn’t add to the detrimental weight of tourism? For Rickshaw Travel, the answer to both questions is yes. Rickshaw believes travel can be a huge social and environmental benefit to the destinations they work with and they aim to maximise the benefit of tourism, whilst minimising the impact and working as sustainably as possible. Each trip encompasses this meaningful travel ethos in some way. It could be that guests stay in an eco-friendly resort that supports the local environment, journey out into the countryside to help a local farmer, stay in a local family home or visit a community based tourism project. Through meaningful travel practices Rickshaw bring travellers closer to the country and community they’re visiting. Here Rickshaw Travel highlights the top Thailand trips to escape the tourist crowds and embrace local life.

This rare Thailand adventure trip will take travellers deep into wildest Thailand, where they’ll explore enchanting rainforests and swim in sparkling natural lakes. Guests will overnight in two unique places: two nights in the Anurak Community Lodge in Khao Sok National Park, a stunning location hidden amongst the limestone cliffs and one night on a secluded floating house raft, surrounded by spectacular rock formations jutting from the glassy lake. The staff in the Jungle Lodge are all from the local community and the guides will happily point out wildlife and talk about the local conservation projects. West Sussex Author Judith Thomson Publishes Third Historical Novel Inspired by the 17th century, Sussex author Judith Thomson has used the fascinating era as the basis for her new novel, High Heatherton . “The 17th century was filled with such vibrant characters and rich settings that it was a natural fit for where to base my novel,” explains Judith. High Heatherton follows Philip Devalle, the younger son of an earl, who is left penniless when his older brother, declared insane and locked away in Bedlam, inherits his family estate, High Heatherton. When Philip leaves the French army and returns to

Weymouth Author Wins The Prize To Have His Sci-Fi Novel Published By Matador Dorset author Peter Breakspear will have his sci-fi novel End Point published by Matador, who held a competition in conjunction with Writing Magazine. In October 2015, Writing Magazine announced a competition for one lucky author to have their book published, for free, by Matador. Weymouth author Peter Breakspear entered his gripping sci-fi novel, End Point, and beat off over a hundred other contenders to win the prize. Chosen by Writing Magazine ’s editor Jonathan Telfer and Matador’s Managing Director Jeremy Thompson, End Point will be published in August, accompanied by a series of articles in the magazine. Peter’s novel was selected as the overall winner due to the quality of writing and its unusual twist on conventional sci-fi themes. “Peter’s entry was well presented, ticked all the boxes and made us want to read on,” commented Jeremy. Peter, whose wife persuaded him to enter the competition, comes from a background in writing, having previously published the time we have to spend in the garden, from having young
