Colin, together with Jenna, founded Beyond 7/2 to try to defuse this ticking health time bomb. Through efforts and initiatives designed to raise awareness and funding, the charity seeks to help encourage the younger generations to develop lifelong, healthy habits and outlooks, and pursue their goals and aspirations, not sit in front of the Xbox. Through reaching out to, and engaging with the younger generation he hopes to show how, using his own accomplishments as an example, anything is within their reach: if Colin is capable of overcoming perhaps the greatest, most dangerous endurance challenge the world has to offer, even after a tragic accident in his younger years so severe that many doctors thought he would never walk again, the sky is the limit, whatever your dreams and aspirations. However, while his efforts extend primarily to working with the young, Colin is also an accomplished public speaker in corporate circles, and has worked alongside C-Level executives at some of the biggest blue-chip companies in the country in this capacity. REFINING THE FUTURE Staatsolie Suriname has made an impressive name for itself within the oil and energy industry, thanks to focused leadership and a refreshing attitude to remaining adaptable in a turbulent marketplace, so Endeavour Magazine spoke with Rudolf Elias, Managing Director, to find out what the future holds. AMAZING WORLD ROCKET LAB: THE SKY’S NOT THE LIMIT WRITTEN BY ALICE INSTONE-BREWER
T
hroughout our history, humanity has ventured to new shores to prosper, be it to trade, farm, dig for gold or drill for
oil. To the entrepreneurs amongst us, new frontiers mean new resources, new needs, and new opportunities for business. Since long before Neil Armstrong’s small step for man, we have written and dreamed about venturing to that – dare I say it? – “final frontier.” Yet, as with all developing technologies, the cost of space travel has presented a barrier to new companies, keeping access exclusive to large space agencies with the funds and resources to reach it. However,

Much of the cost of space travel comes from breaking the Earth’s atmosphere. Upon reaching open space, passenger-less vessels can navigate and work with (relatively) little difficulty. However, getting them there is the challenge, as it requires construction of a rocket, or securing one of the highly sought-

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD SOLUTIONS, COMPETITIVE COSTS Delicious and nutritious, biscuits are the first and best convenience food, much-loved by consumers the world over. Following a near continuous period of uninterrupted economic growth, Asia Pacific is booming and the rising disposable incomes of a burgeoning consumer class means that demand for biscuits, snacks and confectionery has soared, to the extent that region’s biscuit and confectionery market is now one of the world’s biggest and fastest growing markets. With a booming market that is yet to reach its true
potential, there has never been a better window of opportunity for the region’s domestic biscuit and confectionery producers to capture market share from the industry’s global giants.

ntil recently, the divergence in process knowledge, industry experience, equipment and the capacity to invest between large global producers and the smaller domestic Asian
producers meant that foreign multi-nationals lead the growth in many markets. Bridging this gap became important for Asian producers and this facilitated the growth of Baker Pacific. “As companies in Asia grow, they need expertise on formulations, ingredient specifications, processes and the development and commissioning of new products. I saw in 2000 many local biscuit production lines and some imported lines and at that time overcapacity. However the capacity was underutilised mainly because of a lack of capability to develop successful new products for a growing market. This is the opportunity which enabled Baker Pacific to start”, explained Iain Davidson, founder and Director of Baker Pacific. Made up of a small team of industry professionals from UK, China, Korea, each with over 30 years of experience in the food industry, with leading biscuit, confectionery and engineering

Upon taking on a project, NEB’s architects first take the time to get inside the client’s mind, so to speak, and gain a sound understanding of their vision. Only once they understand the client vision can they can set about realising it. Each individual project represents a new beginning – there are no preconceptions, no templates to work from. The slate is clean. This is because each project is treated as bespoke, tailored only to that particular client. “NEB’s success can be directly linked to our long-standing working relationships; however, we believe it’s our work ethos and commitment to establishing and maintaining such relationships that has attributed to the company’s success and continued growth. We believe in working with all developers and nurturing each project if there is genuine investment and belief in the project.” The result of fostering strong, customer-centric relationships with clients, and of investing the time and resources to discover exactly what it is they desire, has led to the successful completion of dozens upon dozens of exquisite buildings, both at home in the Middle East and further afield. n my experience of reviewing cars over the years, I’ve become increasingly fond of Peugeots. There aren’t many car brands
out there, after all, that have truly mastered the art of producing exciting, reliable motors that look good, and measure-up as a close second only to the elite brands with much higher price tags. An ear worm was placed in my head way back in September 2015 when we were asked to review the Peugeot 308SW. One of our regular reviewers was assigned and he is a 6’5 man mountain. Naturally, he complained bitterly about the lack of cabin room in his review, which I thought was a little unfair. So, to redress the balance and give the 308SW a fair crack of the whip, I felt it was only right and proper to get a normal sized person to review the 308, albeit the sporty 308 SW GT Line and 308 GTI. Our friends at Peugeot sent us a brace of their cars to play with in May, and we took them on a good variety of surfaces, from motorway to country lanes – guess what, my opinion hasn’t changed one bit. It is fair to say that the fantastic French giants at Peugeot make a lovely car. Both the SW and the GTI have similar set-ups inside the cabins. Each model has a tiny steering wheel, which I guess you either love or hate. Personally, I think they are ace because they really make you feel at one with the car. With this in mind, it can’t come as any surprise that long-lasting relationships, a vested interest in clients’ successes and a proactive approach to customer service are the pillars that underpin every contract undertaken by Eilbeck. When you learn that the current CEO, Tom Eilbeck, is the third consecutive family CEO to take the reigns, you get a real sense of the steadfast and uncompromising family tradition that steers the company as a whole, but the company was no flight of fancy, back at the moment of conception. Engineering runs though the veins of every Eilbeck and being the grandson of the founding father of the company, Tom Eilbeck has certainly not looked to upset a successful apple cart with radical ideas that would undermine the incredible reputation enjoyed by the company for a century.

heritage (bolstered by the current CEO sharing the name of the original founder) and future-proofed technology means that the potential for continuation and more importantly, development, is unlimited and it appears that the team is extremely excited about what’s to come, “As we now expand our capabilities further into CNC machining, we become further independent being able to engineer and machine products for our leading crane and winch divisions. As Eilbeck have operated as machinists before, we are drawn back to our roots, and we can guarantee to provide accurate products which will suit your needs and work time and time again.” How about we make a prediction about the future of Eilbeck Cranes? Given that there is an exceptional amount of history and a vested family interest in the continuation of the company, coupled with the all-encompassing market domination already in place, we think that the coming years will see Eilbeck rise to the top of the global marketplace. Not only that, we will put our necks on the line and say that we firmly believe that in the future, when crane and winch manufacturing is being discussed, in any country, it will be impossible not to hear the name Eilbeck cranes and we honestly can’t wait to see that prediction come true.

A MAJOR NAME IN MICROFIBER Socially responsible textile production might sound like something of a myth, but Pactics, an innovative Chinese operation is making it a reality. Staring with a simple vision that highlighted a desire to, “…create a decent company that offered competitively priced, high-quality microfiber products in an environmentally and socially responsible way,” Pactics was keen to set itself apart from competitors, right from the start. It’s no secret that a number of textile production companies have exploited workers with inadequate working conditions and wages, but that was NEVER on the cards for Pactics, “Not only did operating in Cambodia allow us to provide aboveminimum-wage jobs to an economically deprived community, it also gave us the opportunity to build our own cutting-edge, sustainable

Therein lies the inherent genius of Pactics; it’s a company that maintains incredible standards, offers new innovations, yet always strives to minimise environmental consequences. The current commercial world seems to showcase those companies that pay lip service to green endeavours, but it’s those that slip under the radar and just continually strive to do, rather than say, such as Pactics, that are making the real differences, “We understand the materials we work with and the impact our work has on the world around us. that power consumption will be no more than that of an electric car, and the cost will be similar to that of a high-end sports car – but convincing a sceptical public that they are safe to use may take time. Then there is the task of devising rules of the road and an aerial highway code, so to speak, for the bustling, gridlocked skies of the future. FACILITATING GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT Thanks to its first-rate infrastructure network, skilled workforce, and standing as the continent’s leading finance, technology, and commodities production hub, South Africa has long been regarded by economists and the world’s advanced nations as the region’s great economic hope. However, if the country is to unlock its immense potential and develop into a recognised power by international standards, there is still much work to do. WRITTEN BY DJAMIL BENMEHIDI
MAPUTO CORRIDOR LOGISTICS INITIATIVE It is no secret that the economies of Africa’s big-hitting
regional powers have seen better days – sadly, South Africa is no exception in this respect. The half decade just gone has proved especially challenging at times for the country’s business community, but recent data has painted an altogether more promising picture of what lies ahead. Efforts to shore up and strengthen economic growth are starting to bear fruit, chief amongst them being the establishment of a growing number of development corridors across the Southern African region.

PUTTING THE CUSTOMER FIRST When it comes to creating great food, as a rule it is almost always the case that the smaller independently-run outfits steal the show. No more is this true then with delicious artisan breads, crispy bars and cookies, as any discerning consumer of such treats will soon attest. WRITTEN BY DJAMIL BENMEHIDI
RISE BAKING COMPANY Local bakeries, as with most small food outlets, take
great pride in their craft and bake their goods with great attention to detail. The art of creating unique breads, crispy bars and cookies, using meticulously sourced ingredients that are then baked to perfection, is as important as the bottom line. When a bakery emerges that is a cut above the best of the rest, people talk and word spreads over social media, and before you know it the bakery in question is the talk of town. And therein lies the problem: when a local bakery achieves success, more often than not it eventually hits a wall.

essential. Today, most of the customers from the retail segment are looking for some differentiation with their products or packaging. By working with them, we can help provide them with tailored products to meet their needs,” explained Jeff Getzkin, Senior Vice President of Sales at Rise Baking Company. He went on to say: “We promote a team culture in that our environment is ‘find a way to make it work for the customer, and then do what it takes to get it done.’ This differentiates us from our larger competitors where they have what they want to sell and that is all they have to offer.” This product tailoring can take any number of forms, be it offering to develop labels for customer in-house, or providing different types of artisan breads using different baking methods;
