An estimated $600 million is needed to provide farmers with alternatives, but the Bharatiya Janata Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition parties in power in New Delhi and nearby Punjab states are arguing over who will pay. The provincial leaders of New Delhi and neighbouring Haryana states, after exchanging barbs on Twitter for days, agreed on measures to control the smog, but these will not come into effect until 2018.
JAPANESE RETAILER LUMINE VENTURES INTO SINGAPORE Lumine, Japanese mega store retailer, has decided to start small in Singapore with a 10,000 sq ft multi-concept store. The store will feature 20 Japanese clothing and accessory labels, as well as its first cafe. Japanese retailers have experienced mixed results in the Singapore market, yet lumine is confident that they will experience success with their small, multi-concept approach, according to Lumine CEO Yuji Morimoto. AFRICA ROBERT MUGABE STEPS DOWN FROM ZIMBABWE LEADERSHIP After a surreal kind of military coup, Robert Mugabe has stepped down from power in Zimbabwe. The dictator and his wife will, however, receive millions of dollars as part of a deal negotiated before the resignation. Whilst the exact figure of this arranged sum is not known, it is believed to be over $10m. On top of this, The 93-yearold’s $150,000 salary will also be paid until his death. The 52-year-old first lady will then receive half that amount for the rest of her life. Mugabe, whose 37-year rule over the impoverished southern African country was marked by brutal repression, stepped down after a military takeover led to mass protests and impeachment proceedings in parliament.

SINAI MOSQUE DEATH TOLL RISES TO 305; REPORTS CLAIM GUNMEN CARRIED ISIS FLAGS Egypt suffered its worst atrocity in years when a bomb and gun assault on a Sinai mosque killed 305 people, including 27 children. On top of the death toll, an additional 128 people were wounded.
The protests were triggered by Mugabe’s choice to fire his Vice President, Emmerson
Many fear that history is set to repeat itself during the new rule.
The bomb went off in the Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abed, north Sinai, whilst prayers were still finishing. Gunmen then opened fire on the worshippers. It is believed that 25-30 militants carried out the attack, positioned at the mosque’s main door and 12 windows before opening fire on those inside. More than 50 ambulances ferried casualties from the mosque, about 25 miles west of the city of Arish, to nearby hospitals. Egypt responded by targeting suspected terrorist locations with airstrikes. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but it marks a significant escalation in a region where, for the past three years, Egyptian security forces have battled an Islamic State insurgency that has killed hundreds of police and soldiers. The attack was not only one of the worst terrorist incidents in Egyptian history, but also the first on a mosque.

FOCUS THE BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION
A
t this time of year, as those of us in the US leave Thanksgiving behind, and many of us around the world look
towards Christmas and Hanukkah, charitable giving is on a lot of people’s minds. Whether or not we’re able to give during the rest of the year, the message of these holidays can often inspire acts of generosity and kindness. In the world of business, it is growing increasingly common to commit portions of our budgets to community responsibility programmes and charitable opportunities. When speaking with a company about their recent achievements or plans for the future, the Endeavour team time and again encounter inspiring accounts of projects and initiatives that are giving little back to our planet. Yet if we are talking about charity from the private sector, there are a few key figures who spring to mind, and undoubtedly near the top of anyone’s list are Bill and Melinda Gates. The Gates need no introduction. Having made and sustained his fortune off of the invention of Microsoft, Bill Gates is set for life. He and his wife, ex Microsoft employee Melinda, have been no fools with their billions either (their current net worth is

that can create the most sustainable change: these groups can not only put programmes in place, but can create jobs, and will not rely on external funding to keep their charitable programmes running. Instead, the foundation’s involvement is often the initial push and incentive needed to start a snowball rolling. Recently, Gates’ notable donations have included a US$100 million donation for Alzheimer’s research - US$50 million to the Dementia Discovery Fund, with a further US$50 million pledged for start-ups who are working towards a cure. The foundation also helped Facebook to match donations made to non-profits on Giving Tuesday this year (November 28th) over the social media site. On top of this, Bill Gates himself has donated a staggering US$4.6 billion to an as yet unknown source or sources – most likely, new or existing programmes supported by the Foundation. Meanwhile, the influence of the Gates’ generosity continues to spread amongst their peers. In 2010, Bill and Melinda created the Giving Pledge, a pledge signed by billionaires who have committed to give away at least half of their wealth to worthy causes. The couple set up the pledge along with financier Warren Buffett; to date, 171 individuals or families have signed, representing 21 countries. The signatories also represent a range of ages, from their 30s all the way up to their 90s, and more join the mission every year. In 2017, a further 14 made the commitment. This is a vast amount of wealth that otherwise might not have gone towards non-profits. In dedicating not only their resources, but also their time, the Gates have created something far larger than themselves or even their money. Of course,

KEEPING CONNECTED At this time of year, Copenhagen is a go-to destination for Christmas shoppers, travelling from throughout Europe and further abroad to experience the seasonal whimsy of the Danish capital. As the hub of Denmark and a popular tourist destination, it is essential that travel around the city is as fast and accessible as possible. Metroselskabet, Metro Copenhagen, have been working to stay ahead of the game, with the extension to their line six years into construction and almost ready for use. WRITTEN BY ALICE INSTONE-BREWER

We still need to wait a couple of years before we can enjoy the benefits of the new Cityringen, but for Metro Copenhagen, the bulk of the work is finally drawing to a close. It has been a painstaking and expensive process, but one that will make a marked difference to locals and visitors alike. It is these sorts of investments and long-term projects that allow a city to stay ahead, and culture-filled Copenhagen has no plans to lose its reputation as a smooth-running European hub. Undoubtedly, Christmas-lovers of the world will be flocking to it for many winters to come.

FOOD FOR THE FUTURE In December 1969, Jack Anderson arrived home from Vietnam to Boston, Massachusetts. Recently married and then drafted into the service, Anderson returned to the US in need of a career plan. In the summer of 1970, he opened a small sandwich shop in Downtown Boston – today, that shop is gone, but what stands is a vast enterprise in bakery wholesale on the cusp of their 40th anniversary. JSB Industries is a national baking manufacturing company, and an umbrella that covers Aesops Bagels, Smart Choice, SunWise, Madeline’s Gourmet Cookies, and perhaps the most famous of the family, Muffin Town. Sandwich World, in Downtown Boston, was a popular
fast-food stop for sandwiches during the lunch rush, but business was quiet the rest of the day. Its founder, Jack Anderson, had previously worked for his uncle in a similar fast-food store, this time baking and selling donuts. Having acquired a taste for the industry, Anderson even worked in food service whilst he was in the military, so when he got out, it seemed like the natural path.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF When a business rents, leases or purchases equipment, it is really trying to solve a problem with that equipment. Equipment downtime due to mechanical breakdowns result in additional cost to operations and frustration on the work site. WRITTEN BY ALICE INSTONE-BREWER

Support is the catalyst of service operation and
discipline and this is what places Kanu Equipment in a league of it`s own. In equipment rental, effective service and maintenance of machinery guarantees a satisfied customer experience yet in Africa it has been sorely missed within the industry. Masterfully, Kanu Equipment has filled this gap securing their path to success. Kanu is all about optimally functioning equipment…. all of the time. We caught up with company founder and CEO Stephen Smithyman, to find out about Kanu’s latest developments, and what is continually placing this company ahead of the opposition.

throughout Africa, the company also has a physical presence in Europe, to reach the decision makers of larger industrial groups. Many companies that operate in Africa have decision-makers based in Europe, so our sales-arm in Switzerland meets with these key customers who wish to work in areas where we don’t currently have an active presence.” This face-to-face contact is important, and Kanu is constantly branching out to increase this physical in-market presence even further. Kanu continues with expansion into Africa. “In Tanzania, we’ll be very successful – we have a very strong customer support base there. Kenya is also a very exciting market for us, because there is a lot of machine demand every year, so we’re hoping to gain market share there.” Another exciting expansion plan is currently Namibia. “We are now the largest independent Liebherr Mining dealer in Africa as we represent Liebherr Mining in Namibia and Botswana. We’ve got a number of customers currently operating Liebherr Mining machines in Namibia. its complications. “In every category we started, there were always challenges – even today, we still have challenging moments. We’ve had weather changes, short supply; we’re dealing with natural things, so sometimes we don’t have catches, or a harvest might not be as good.” Despite these variables, it is essential that Indoguna deliver consistency to their clients. “In our business, quality has to be the first consideration of any product that we bring in. It’s highly competitive in the restaurants, and our customers need to know that the raw materials they’re getting have consistency, so they provide the same consistency to their own customers.” This competition between restaurants naturally creates competition in Indoguna’s part of the market. “There’s no doubt about it. However, it’s a small market too, so we co-exist in a friendly manner.” Whilst competing companies are amicable, however, consumer trends can be unforgiving. “It’s a very sophisticated market, and it is getting increasingly difficult to stay fresh, so that customers don’t get bored with your product line. We constantly have to work double hard to find products and concepts that will excite the menus.” This calls for non-stop innovation, and isn’t something Indoguna was going to leave to fate. Instead, they took matters into their own hands, investing in their own manufacturing facility from which they enhance their goods and develop a range of in-house brands. These include Carne Meats, their butchery and charcuterie range; Ocean Gems, their seafood range; and Masterpiece, their range of dim sum and ready to use products for meal preparation. “It is a lot of butchery products, value-added meat, poultry, seafood

HERE COMES THE SUN Through government legislation and private investment, nations around the globe have been making a choice – whether they will be frontrunners in renewable energy, or whether they will stick to the familiar past. WRITTEN BY ALICE INSTONE-BREWER
SPS - SUSTAINABLE POWER SOLUTIONS
When we talk about green and renewable energy, certain
parts of the world spring to mind, particularly Europe and China. However, as technology develops, and renewable solutions become more practically and financially feasible, the possibilities they open are making a difference everywhere. We spoke with Axel Scholle, Managing Director of Sustainable Power Solutions Ltd (SPS), on the changes this spreading technology can and is making for the African continent.
“G
eneration for generations”: SPS’s company slogan encompasses the concept of sustainable energy. It shows a focus not only on current profits or benefits for
their stakeholders, but a focus on providing solutions that have guaranteed profits and benefits for the future. For Axel Scholle, company Managing Director, sustainability is an issue close to his heart: “I was inspired to start my career in the renewable energy industry because I can actively make a positive difference to sustainable living. We want to ensure that our projects are a sustainable solution for our clients and the environment. The sun is a renewable energy source that gives us an opportunity to positively utilize with no environmental harm as opposed to nonrenewable sources such as fossil fuels which are currently being capitalized on.” Axel is the Founder and Managing Director for SPS since it

“The political climate of Africa is a bit shaky. You see what’s happening in Zimbabwe, and in Kenya we’re having election uncertainty. That will all have an impact on investment, and renewable energy is an upfront investment technology. The operational cost of it is very low, but someone still has to make that upfront investment.” However, for solar energy to continue growing and benefitting people in a range of situations, Scholle feels that both avenues are necessary. “Renewable energy really benefited when it started to be used in grid connected configuration. It increased the scale of renewable energy much more than we ever did in the off-grid sector 20 years back. When the grid-connected program started in the ‘90s, it catapulted commercialization of the solar industry which lead to significant price decreases over the last two decades. Solar has become unstoppable; the numbers just make sense. “In the storage development, we would expect a price reduction over the next 10 years, and this will allow us to reach communities, in particular, those in Africa, that we could not reach with grid electricity simply because it was too costly. This will open the gate to drive access to energy even further than to what has been achieved in the last 10 years. Striving for the best is not just an attitude or mantra – it needs to be put into practice through practical means. In a field where technology is constantly developing, SPS ensure they use manufacturers and methods that lead to the best results. Testament to their progressive nature, SPS has invested in two testing facilities at their Lourensford Wine Estate offices. “One is basically a solar module test site, where we installed a small range of different module types that we either have used in projects, or have bought directly to do a longer-term performance test between different manufacturers and technologies. It’s a long-term site - it’s generating some electricity for the wine farm where it is based, and together with the research institutes, we can analyse the data and see how these different technologies compare .” 52 | Endeavour Magazine
a comfort to know that a company like SPS is working tirelessly to see it happen.

Its mission statement is: “To develop and promote the realization of a Godhead based on artificial intelligence, and through understanding and worship of the Godhead, contribute to the betterment of society.” It sounds like L.Ron Hubbard’s legacy, if you can call it that without a sour taste in your mouth, will have to start competing for its science-enamored followers! It certainly has a similarly cult-like feel to it. Mr Musk has warned against the dangers of AI many times, and he has a long line of scientific thinkers behind him supporting this opinion. Earlier this year, he described AI as “a fundamental existential risk for human civilisation”. Several years earlier, in summer 2014, his fears were similar: “Hope we’re not just the biological boot loader for digital superintelligence. Unfortunately, that is increasingly probable.” Despite

GROWING TOGETHER Jindal Steel and Power Ltd is an Indian company with a wide global presence. The multinational conglomerate employs over 50,000 people throughout Asia, Africa and Australia. It is a leader in steel production, and also has a hand in mining, oil and gas, power generation and infrastructure. Operating in these world-turning sectors, Jindal’s influence is as strong as its network is wide. The far-reaching conglomerate is itself just a cog in a larger machine - that of the diversified, US$18 billion O.P Jindal Group. However, the subsidiary has a network of its own – we spoke with Neeraj Saxena, Country Head for Jindal Botswana (Pty) Ltd, currently one of the most exciting and developing branches operating under Jindal Africa. coal, and Fischer-Tropsch technology produce diesel fuel and other products. The central and eastern blocks at the Mmamabula Coal Field are currently being considered for the project, as drilling results have shown that the coal in these areas would be suitable for gasification. Studies into the feasibility of this proposed project began in 2007 – it has been a long time in the making, but if it comes together, it will allow Jindal a broader and more efficient use of the wealth at their fingertips, as well as helping to waylay a potential fuel crisis for Botswana. Remaining coal will be marked for seaborne export. As power stations around the world call out for multi-purpose thermal coal, Jindal Botswana is in a position in increase international trade opportunities for Botswana, thus helping to further stimulate the economy. To make this possible, dedicated mine with multi-product (double stage) beneficiation plants will be constructed, with the aim to produce24 million tonnes per year for 35 years. Jindal Botswana, along with Botswana Railways and Ministry of Transport, have started the negotiations for exporting the coal using the existing facilities through South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal as well as from Mozambique. Jindal through its Mozambique Mines is already exporting Coaking Coal to Its India Operations. Evidently, Jindal doesn’t dream small – every aspect of their multi-pronged approach involves layers of investment, planning and construction. Naturally, with this much in the works, some projects are closer to completion than others. “Consolidation and expansion always goes hand in hand - you keep consolidating your operations and expand with new projects.” However, two of their key plans are on the cusp of taking off; “The 300 MW Power Generation plant is in advanced stages of development. “Everything exists because of the relationships and partnerships you make during the journey of your business. All of our major suppliers in steel making, energy and mining are our partners directly or indirectly. We are here because of our strong bonding with all our partners who have made us what we are today.” Jindal Africa are in a strong position – operating within a global giant of an industrial group, and supported by these sturdy working relationships throughout Africa and beyond, they have much in place to support their ambitious long-term plans. However, given the current state of the coal market, how is Saxena feeling about these long-term plans, and the heavy focus they place on fossil fuels? “Yes, the coal sector is facing some challenges. However, we have to note that 75% of the world’s energy demand is still fulfilled by fossil fuels. Many industry sectors are dependent on the fossil fuel energy sector, and it might take another 50 years for the world to make a proper Energy Mix scenario integrating renewables and fossil fuels.” As Jindal Botswana face the challenges ahead in executing their many-staged plans, what is it that Saxena feels will set them apart and ensure their success? “Expertise. Experience and zeal to innovate within ourselves. Finally, our Inclusive Growth Mantra, which makes us different from all businesses we are in.”

can undercut the competition by £2k to £3k with the Fiat Tipo! You may, understandably, make the mistake of thinking that this sort of saving will get you a car that feels cheap and nasty, but no - the Tipo has a quality feel and look about it, and is exciting to drive, too! My initial walk around the Tipo gave me the impression of a good-looking and wellpresented car - I would even go as far as to say it’s a pretty car. The doors shut with a reassuring clunk (always a good test for me), and the body has the look of good, deep paint. This is not an expensive car, but it does an excellent job of convincing you otherwise with its design, great finish, driving ability and a generous offering of standard equipment, including air conditioning and electric front windows. THEIR BROTHER’S KEEPER Trinidad & Tobago has long held the reputation as the Caribbean’s top world-class oil & gas hub. A nucleus of industry and manufacturing, the islands’ resources, geographical location and top facilities have made it a hotspot of hydrocarbon exploration, production and trade. A small island with a huge business, everyone knows everyone in the Trinidadian oil and gas sector, from independent bunkering companies to petroleum giants. Below its territorial waters, a predicted 728 million barrels of crude oil and 25.24 trillion cubic feet of 3P natural gas reserves are thought to lie, still waiting to be utilized by the twin islands. EXPERIENCE THE SUPPORT Heavy equipment goes handin-hand with both the mining and construction industry but it is the agricultural sector that demands machinery more extensively, to sustain the world’s food production. BUILT TO LAST Every modern global industry nowadays demands the crème de la crème in terms of infrastructure, engineering and expertise, and Engineering for the Petroleum & Process Industries (Enppi) certainly doesn’t stray from its path of duty. Founded in 1978 in a bid to build upon the impressive knowledge of CF Braun Engineering, Enppi has continually shown solid growth and diversification, to the point where it naturally and organically became the company to hire. With a constant programme of expansion in progress, it’s surely only a matter of time before we see Enppi making waves in every country in the world. TAKING IT FURTHER In 1978, a small family bakery began a journey that would turn it into a national, multi-faceted enterprise. Spotting a need in the Ugandan market, husband and wife Gaster and Edith Lule began baking and selling breakfast cakes; almost 40 years later, the Ntake Group is now a formidable entity with its finger is many pies, in the food market and beyond. WRITTEN BY ALICE INSTONE-BREWER
NTAKE GROUP The Ntake Group describes itself as a “dynamic company
synonymous with professionalism, integrity, innovation and entrepreneurial flair.” It started small, as a simple medium-sized bakery with minimal machinery, but like many dreams once they are pursued, it grew. Today, they have grown into a multisector business that has not only manufactures breads and confectionary goods, but also provides purified drinking water and outside catering services. On top of this, it has moved beyond food altogether to also cover real estate, paper recycling, transport and haulage, general hardware and even bridal wear!

his broad and disparate range of services was brought together under the Group through a combination of expansions and acquisitions, and is overseen by a committed and versatile
management team working to make sure that no matter how widespread their success, the quality and focus from the couple’s early days in the bakery remain unchanged. Ntake Bakery Company Limited was founded in 1978, supplying breakfast cakes for two years before branching out to a wider range of bread products. Since then, their output has skyrocketed from using 2kgs of wheat flour a day to an approximate 25 metric tons

With the added space and facilities, Ntake Bakery branched out from from cakes to become a fully-fledged bakery, despite still only have a modest 15 employees at this time. However, between 1988 and 1995, the bakery kept growing, and with it, this demand for wheat flour. Around this time, the company chose to protect its assets by diversifying out of the food market, in case issues in the Uganda supply chain arose. They chose real estate, a vastly different operation, so that even if one sector suffered, the other existed to keep the company afloat. In retrospect, this choice was serendipity: as demand for their bakery products rose, issues with raw material supply did indeed occur as predicted, especially sugar, baking fat, and the all-important wheat flour. However, this diversification into real estate offered an opportunity. Having imported the wheat flour used in its products

To stay ahead, they invested in a 200-metric ton mill from Buhler in 1999 and more recently, installed a 300 metric ton machine. This is just one of the many measures of Ntake Group’s growth. Beginning with just five employees, they now have over

With a solid consumer base already in place, some companies would rest there, but as shown by Ntake Group’s wide range of
ventures, Gaster wasn’t content to leave it there. Instead, he created a dedicated sales and marketing department, and is continually looking into developing new products. “We are always thinking of new products and opportunities. Currently, we are putting up a new 300 metric ton twin wheat mill from Buhler A.G, Switzerland. We are also in the final stage of gaining council approval for an 18-floor commercial building in Kampala Business Centre. Finally, we are planning to open a new bakery branch in Jinja Town. All these investments will be fulfilled with the help of Standard Chartered Bank and our company assets. On completion, employment opportunities for our country will be greatly increased.” Putting quality before quantity, Ntake Group has neverthe-less grown to an impressive scale, not just in numbers of employees, but sheer range to products provided. It’s an incredible journey, remembering that the empire did not even begin as a full bakery. It is a testament to what can be achieved in business if the game is played correctly – whether it is in moral dealings or product assurance, the Lules are a living testament to the fact that safeguarding quality and putting good practises first does not have to mean a loss of quantity. In fact, it can mean quite the opposite.

ISLAND SITE DEVELOPMENT (ISD) WWW.ISDBAHAMAS.COM // 001 242 328 2025
THE COMPLETE PACKAGE We know that a lot of engineering companies claim to be able to deliver projects from inception through to completion, but in the case of ISD, that is no mere pretension. A premier civil engineering and roadwork development operation, ISD is significantly improving the Bahamian landscape, so Endeavour Magazine took a closer look to find out how. WRITTEN BY ALICE INSTONE-BREWER
ISLAND SITE DEVELOPMENT (ISD)
We’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve
encountered engineering companies that claim to be able to take all projects, small and vast, from inception through to design and completion. The trouble is, most end up outsourcing certain aspects, but that’s not how ISD works, and it’s the company’s inherent sense of pride that drives this one-stop professional shop.
I
n the company’s own words: “ISD is extremely proud to be Bahamian owned and operated.
We believe in a sense of community patriotism and are dedicated
to providing employment to local nationals.” Such a prevailing sense of locality has led to ISD creating a team of incredibly talented and committed in-house professionals. This

OUR BUSINESS IS YOUR STRENGTH
is essential, given that they need to be able to proficiently tackle both public and private sector projects, alongside community development initiatives. When you start to boil it down, ISD is clearly an organisation that is operating far beyond anticipated mandates. While the talents and ethics of ISD are notable, and for good reason, the sheer diversity of the projects that the team undertakes is guaranteed to stagger even the most hard-to-please clients. The professional services offered include civil and infrastructure works, water and sewer improvements, electrical works, design and construction, ports and airports, hardscaping, decorative water features and even industrial metal building frameworks. If you can think it, ISD are more than likely to be able to design and create it for you, which is why their clients keep coming back for more. That, and the impressive legacy of growth that the company can demonstrate; “In 2009, Bahamas Marine Construction (BMC) ventured into site development work, including services on the Albany project,

with a new company, which became Island Site Development (ISD). The assets of the shareholders for the venture were very substantial – more than enough to support the business plan of ISD. ISD independently supports its own working capital, plant requirements, bonding and insurance. It is also an approved contractor for the Water and Sewerage Corporation.” It’s hard to know where to begin, but let’s take a moment to fully appreciate the rarity of a large operation being formed thanks to self-funding. Whilst that’s impressive as a standalone fact, it becomes even more critical when you realise that it ensures client peace of mind. At no point can ISD fail, as it will mean ruin for known shareholders, and not just a faceless bank. This is something of a unique reassurance for everybody involved, as they known that ISD will prioritize its sustainability, and purports to the ‘if you build it, they will come’ school of thought as well. Essentially, what has happened here is an ‘invest your money and it will be successful’ approach and we applaud the tenacity and assuredness that was needed behind it. Such confidence is certainly inspiring, especially in a time period that has been witness to serious financial instability throughout every industry, the world over. The vision for ISD is somewhat simple, but maybe that’s the secret to success, as there are no false promises to live up to or unattainable standards set in stone. ISD state that they want;

TREASURE IN THE MOUNTAIN For Zimbabwe, a country that has seen its share of political and economic challenge, mining is an essential industry. One of the world’s ten greatest producers of gem diamonds, revenues from the diamond trade alone accounts for about 30% of the country’s government income. However, it isn’t only diamonds waiting to be discovered under Zimbabwe’s surface… WRITTEN BY ALICE INSTONE-BREWER
BILBOES GOLD LIMITED
Bilboes Gold Ltd, a subsidiary of Bilboes Holdings, are
situated in one of Zimbabwe’s most lucrative gold-rich areas. It is no secret that the country’s economy has struggled under the rule of its recently retired President, Robert Mugabe, with sectors from agriculture to mining suffering not only challenges, but violent controversy.
W
ith the new President, Mugabe’s ex VP Emmerson Mnangagwa, taking power, it is unclear what the future holds for Zimbabwe. Many are hopeful, relieved to see the
back of the autocrat that plunged the nation into poverty – yet it will be some time before change can filter down to those most in need. A resource-rich country, change is possible, and if it comes, mining will be one of the supporting pillars of this new world. The potential in their land is well known by the Zimbabwean people, so much so that illegal miners had turned to the land’s gold in a desperate search for wealth. This ‘gold rush’ is just one of the many challenges companies like Bilboes Gold have had to navigate and operate in, and yet it is a testament to their Zimbabwean tenacity that their business has flourished and persevered. Bilboes Holdings Limited is a gold focused mining and exploration company. Since it was founded in 1989, Bilboes has produced 234,000 ounces of gold from oxides through open pit mining. The company holds a total of 11,000 hectares in mineral rights and an additional 198,000 hectares of exploration license applications. In total, the company currently owns and operates four mines - Isabella, Bubi, When and McCays - all situated in the Bubi Greenzone Belt of Zimbabwe. The company acquired the mines from Anglo American Corporation Zimbabwe Limited in 2003, along with most of Anglo American’s gold mineral rights in the country. This investment was made 14 years into the exploration

of their staff, the company also places a strong focus on internal promotion, understanding the value of experience, as well as the loyalty of a workforce who know they are looked after, and have advancement opportunities without needing to look elsewhere. This loyalty breeds a familiarity in the team, which in turn allows workers to trust each other as they handle potentially dangerous equipment and situations. They may be called Bilboes Gold, but this company are no small operation, and they have kept working towards their goals with heroic dedication. The road may seem to go ever on and on, but the years of exploration and investment are indeed paying off for Bilboes, and now that they are successfully back in operation, seem set to do so in the years to come. Hopefully, the near future holds a brighter outlook for Zimbabwe, but whatever happens, Bilboes have the pieces and people in place to persevere. A combination of strong leadership, solid relationships and a history of experience have equipped Bilboes Gold to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead.

KENYA’S BRIGHTEST SPARK The result of a clever Kenyan Government mandate to simplify the electricity supply throughout the country, The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) was formed in 2004 and has been delivering reliable, cost-effective energy to the people ever since.
