PORTFOLIO / MASTER THESIS / ANCONA WATERFRONT master thesis
urban, social and economical development of Ancona harbour area and new connections from the sea coast to the city.
location
harbour area, Ancona, Italy
as student
with Nicolò Radicioni / arch. Fregiani Gianluca, arch. Pedrazzoli Riccardo
because of management mistakes, today the city cannot access freely to the harbor area, entirely enclosed by a steel fence, built due to new laws on imports from outside the european community. This study is intended to reclaim this wasted industrial area without dropping down its identity and its powerful economic strenghts, as it was conceived by several former projects. We think that economic reality has not to shut out every form of urban activity, nor vice-versa; so we decided to project an hybrid system in which both realities could coexist without harming each other. Habour area had to be connected to the very city through a deep rationalization of economical activities and a bold empowerment of urban axes running through Ancona. Particular attention was given to the central axis, connecting two different waterfronts to the east and to the west, unique charateristic of the doric city; this urban axis in reality is already working, and only need some aesthetic kind of reorganization; its weakest point (ignored with fault by the administration) is the point of contact with the harbour. That is why we focused, after an urban reorganization of the entire waterfront, on the realization of a ‘valve’ building, which could organize urban fluxes between the city and the sea; this way it could become the first architectural project designed to finally: set the harbour free, reclaim this area from dull economical exploitation, and give it back to the citizens, to whom really belongs.

Runway The runway is a strong character for this park, tying together existing paths and routes. It is a light concrete structure with reddish masonry powder, separating the paved ouside park from the internal grass field; it provides seat benches, shading in summertime and covering in wintertime.
1
Bar The bar is an area integrated into functional flow of functions tied together by the concrete runway, and it is conceived for high school students and occasional wanderers of the linear park above medieval city walls. Its faรงade is completely openable to host events and small concerts.

paths are divided into porous and non porous surfaces; small differences in height on tiles allow the creation of natural water pools with wet time during winter season, and a local control on water flow.

PORTFOLIO / STUDY / PARKING - NOTPARKING case study
project for the insertion of a light railway into the urban tissue, and overall rethinking of the role of parkings into cities;
location
Venezia, Mestre and Marghera, Italy
as student
arch. Antonio Ravalli, arch. Carlos Llop Tornè
THE PARKING IS ONE OF THE PECULIAR SPACES OF THE CONTEMPORARY CITY, WHICH COULD REPRESENT HUGE URBAN POTENTIALITIES. ANYWAY IT IS TOO OFTEN BANISHED TO THE MERE FUNCTION OF CAR CONTAINER. THE PROJECT STARTS FROM THIS POINT OF VIEW AND FROM THE IDEA THAT THE PARKING’S EMPTY SPACE CAN BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY OF PLANNING AND RETRAINING THESE PARTS OF THE CITY AND THEIR URBAN RELATIONSHIPS. THE MATTER IS TO PLAN AGAIN THOSE SPACES WHICH CAN’T BE COMPLETELY EXPLOITED, AND REMAIN EMPTY AND MEANINGLESS WHEN CARS DISAPPEAR. OUR WILL IS TO PLAN A PARASITIC OPERATION TO LET THE SPACE GAIN URBAN CHARACTERISTICS, THROUGH THE INSERTION OF UNSTABILITY FACTORS AND SUPERIMPOSITION OF ACTIVITIES.
ANALOGY IS A R E L AT I O N S H I P O F SIMILARITY BETWEEN SOME CONSTITUTIVE ELEMENTS OF SOME FACTS OR OBJECTS THEMSELVES. IT ALLOWS THE STUDY OF COMPLEX PHENOMENA WITH MODELS CONSTITUTED BY SIMPLER INSTANCES. THE PROJECT MOVES F R O M T H E POSSIBILITY AND THE WILL TO READ TWO DIFFERENT PROBLEMS THROUGH THE SAME E Q U A T I O N S , OBTAINED FROM THE COMPLEXITY OF ‘PIAZZA DEL CAMPO’ IN SIENA AND THEN APPLIED TO A GENERIC PARKING LOT IN MESTRE, MAKING IT TO BEHAVE LIKE AN U R B A N E V E N T GENERATOR AN PEOPLE AGGRAGATION TOOL RATHER THAN SEPARATING PERSONS A N D G E N E R AT I N G FRUSTRATION.

THE STUDY OF THE ANALOGY WITH ‘PIAZZA DEL CAMPO’ BRINGS TO THE D E F I N I T I O N O F O P E R AT I V E ELEMENTS TO BE INSERTED INSIDE THE PROJECT. EVERY SINGLE CELL IS INDEPENDENT AND HAS TO BE L I N K E D TO S U C H S Y S T E M O F FUNCTIONS INTO THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PARKING LOT. IN THIS WAY, I T S I D E N T I T Y I S U N I T A R Y, ALTHOUGH THE POSSIBILITY TO ISOLATE ONE OR MORE PARTS, ACCORDING TO PARTICULAR NECESSITIES. THERE IS NO GOVERNMENT PLANNING IN THIS PART OF THE CITY, AND A DOMINAND MODEL OF CHAOS HIGHLY SPREAD OUT. WE HAVE TO TAKE THIS AS OUR POINT OF DEPARTURE TO DEVELOP OUR STRATEGY: ADDICTION AND DUPLICATION OF USE. MAN IS FREE TO ORGANIZE HIS SPACES.
