EMPOWER WITH ATHLEISURE

I

t’s an entirely unreasonable hour of the morning, yet you’ve not even stepped out of the house and the list of to-do’s you’ve checked off would put any CEO to shame. You’ve read emails and scrolled social (we admit it!), packed backpacks and briefcases, fed the kiddos, showered, stared much too long at your closet and conquered the mountain of papers hiding today’s meeting schedule. You’re just about to breathe, and there goes the dryer buzzer. You’re a woman with no luxury to hit snooze; you are a powerhouse! From the crazy kids to the PTA and your busting-at-the-seams calendar, you’re a #bosslady. Your schedule keeps you moving, oftentimes running, and the least that your style can do is pull double duty and keep up with you. Lucky for us, ladies, athleisure style has driven the fashion world forward with a steady force. No need to grimace each morning at your once go-to power suit and pumps that had you literally trailing the men. Finally, women’s fashion is on point for you to live a life empowered by athleisure. Build your wardrobe to be envy-inspiring and comfortable at the same time with athleisure fashion. It’s professional comfort. Style a soft blouse and fitted trouser with sport wedges. 5 EASY WAYS TO REFRESH YOUR HOME

W

Sight: Thoroughly wash windows until they are dirt-free so the sun can shine through. Capitalize on sunny days, no matter the season, by opening curtains and shades instead of using harsh bulbs. The natural light will soften the look of the room, making it more inviting, not to mention the savings on your energy bills. Sound: Curate a cleaning playlist full of your favorite upbeat tracks. For smaller tasks, use the playlist as a timer. Have to clean out the fridge? Challenge yourself to get it done in three songs or less. Wiping down the tabletops and counters? Give yourself one song. Not only will singing to your favorite tunes make the chores go faster, it will help you achieve all of your tasks in a timely fashion.

hen it comes to finding the time to refresh your home, there is truly no time like the present. Tackling your home cleaning and updating checklists does not have to be a chore – try taking inspiration from a few of your favorite tastes and smells by utilizing the five senses to keep spaces clean and inviting.

Smell: It is no secret that if a home smells clean, it feels clean. Toss out old candles and plug-in air fresheners that you’ve been depending on and opt for a whole home solution. Filtrete Whole House Air Fresheners adhere to your heating and cooling system air filter to release scented air to multiple rooms through the home’s air vents for up to 30 days. Touch: Depending on the season, choose fabrics that fit your home’s general decor and aesthetic, but will also keep you comfortable. In the summer, you’ll want to shed some layers – choose lighter blankets that can be layered on cooler nights. As winter settles in, revamp old comforters with patterned duvets, pairing them with heavy throws and bold pillows. No matter the season, comfort is always key. Taste: Turn your snacks into decor. Instead of hiding your favorite fruits in your crisper drawer, place them in a unique bowl as a centerpiece in your kitchen or dining room – fruits like apricots, cherries and plums are great options, but whatever is in season will do. Not only will this encourage healthy eating, but it will also add another pop of color to the space. For more tips to freshen your home, visit Filtrete.com.

Behind The Scene with Alexis Perkins and Tyshawna Witherspoon RENEW: You are so busy with a TV show and Personal Fitness, how did you find time to write a book? Tyshawna and I are both really busy but writing the book came easy. We were excited about discovering how to care for our own hair and simply wanted to share it with the world. We were passionate about the content so it just flowed out easily. RENEW: How much research did you do for your book? We did quite a bit of research before writing. We had to do research just to get to know our hair and what we can use. From there we went through a series of studies on products and tests on multiple hair types. Once we found a process that was consistent we wanted to share that with the public. We also wanted to tell the story of our personal hair journey as African American women who are also fitness instructors. Being in the fitness industry is an important detail because we had to learn a process that would also last through us being active and sweaty. RENEW: What was your inspiration for this book? Alexis: Discovering that my hair type was not “hard to manage” and not “bad hair”. I just needed to learn what products to use and what process to use them in. Looking in the mirror and having the hair that grew out of my scalp be so beautiful natural, full, and healthy, was amazing. I felt as though this was the beginning of redefining the negative stereo types about black hair. Tyshawna: Our Hair! When we saw the kind of transformation it made and how it held up in classes, we felt as if someone was keeping a secret from us that should no longer be a secret. So we are here to tell the world how to define their curls and keep it curly through days of exercise, bedtime, and regular daily activity. RENEW: How long did this project take? From concept to printing the process took about 6 months. We enjoyed the entire creative process. RENEW: Will you be writing other books as well? Alexis: I have tinkered with the idea of writing another book. If I do, it will be something funny, yet witty, and full of wisdom. Tyshawna: I have an interest in sharing my story on how I made it through depression and turned my life around by describing 10 key steps that were very effective for me coming out of that dark hole. I have not started this project yet, but it’s been on my heart due to the amount of people who are suffering and have been misunderstood. RENEW: What topics will you be covering? Alexis: I would love to write about how to be true to yourself and maintain an ambitious spirit. I also find relationships… and the failure of some relationships to be moments to learn from. Often time breakups hurt in the moment but are humorous when looking at them in hind sight. I would like to write about that. Tyshawna: I would be going into the topics of mental health, self awareness, relationships and personal development. These are all areas I took a deeper interest in on my journey and I believe my understanding of them gave me a significant amount of strength as an entrepreneur, wife and fitness instructor who interacts with many people regularly while balancing it all. RENEW: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Alexis: I am not sure. I have a tendency to pray my way through life so I am not sure where it will take me. I definitely still plan on being an entrepreneur and expanding on different business opportunities that involve, health, fitness, media, and helping others. Tyshawna: I see myself as a life coach and motivational speaker that empowers women. I have noticed that no matter what it is I am doing, my interaction would people always falls into that naturally. I have a passion for people and helping them be their best version of themselves. RENEW: A lot of people are creating “Bucket Lists”, do you have one? Alexis: Yes! I have had a bucket list for years! I wanted to create it while I was young so that I would have years to try and get everything accomplished. One if the things on that list was to become an author… so that’s one thing I can scratch off. Tyshawna: Yes, I do have a bucket list. This list consist of about 101 things that I want to do in my lifetime and I created it in 2007. Since then, I have crossed off so much! Things like, being on TV, writing a book, becoming an entrepreneur and so much more! I might go back and make a new and improved list that takes me even further. RENEW:

Is there anything else you would like to add? The goal of Kinks to Curls is to let people know that “bad hair” isn’t bad at all. It is beautiful. We want to strip people of stereo types that kinky hair is unmanageable and unattractive. We also want to open the dialogue to those who are bi-racial, have bi-racial children, or have adopted children of different ethnicities so that we don’t have to feel frustrated trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t. If it took me years to discover how to turn my kinks to curls without chemicals then I know someone who may be white and has a bi-racial child may not know what to do with that hair type. This book takes the guess work out of it. 10. How can our readers reach you? Why You Need A Coach For Your Personal Brand! T

Bianca Negrón Certified Leadership, Life & Instructional Coach Certified Business Image Consultant & Personal Shopper Certified Mindsonar Professional

his week I watched the movie Eddie “The Eagle” (which I recommend you to watch). This is the true story of an Olympic athlete whose motivation, perseverance and vision led him to achieve his goal. One aspect of the story that caught my attention was Eddie’s relationship with his Coach. Their relationship inspired me and made me reflect on these questions: Do we need a coach to develop our brand? Yes! But, why? I will explain…Eddie’s Coach had a very peculiar past; because of his poor discipline he was not able to achieve his goal in the sport of ski jumping. I will not tell much of the story of Eddie but if I do want to share with the importance of the role that his coach plays in his career as an Olympian. Eddie’s Coach made the difference in his professional brand as an Olympic athlete using four crucial ways of thinking. These are: 1-Reactive Response: Eddie was always determined to achieve his goal and he will always take the initiative to do what he needed to do. He was very proactive but was not able to evaluate the consequences of his actions. His Coach, on the other hand, was more reactive. This way of thinking created a great balance by supporting him to analyze those decisions that that many times he took so abruptly.

2- External Reference: Eddie always knew what he wanted to achieve and understood that he needed to do the necessary to achieve it. His internal reference gave him the confidence he needed to start building his brand but he was not aware that all his decisions could affect his career. The support of his Coach allowed him to understand that it was important to recognize the perception and image that others had about him and how it could support or harm his career. Eddie’s Coach gave him direction and valuable information that made him be respected and valued as an Olympic athlete. 3-Procedures: Eddie’s main goal was to become an Olympic athlete, therefore he tried various winter sports (his options where always really wide, he will do anything in order to go to the Olympic Games) but later on he specialized in ski jumping. His success in that sport was supported through his Coach, which through an intensive training schedule (procedures) helped Eddie train and focus specifically on that sport. 4-Incompatibility: What made Eddie so special was his optimism, his genuine quality of trusting others, and having a good heart. He was a matcher, for him everything was always ok and the most important thing was to continue trying. But his Coach was a “mismatcher”, he always was able to detect what could go wrong, what was missing, whom he could trust and what Eddie needed to do to improve. The story of Eddie “The Eagle” is impressive, his ability and tenacity to pursue his dream are truly inspiring. But part of his success was because of his Coach, who had the experience in his same athletic field but his way of thinking and seeing things were a different from Eddie’s. Among their similarities and differences they created the ideal balance for a successful career and personal brand. Do you want to succeed? A Certified Coach can support you!

ENHANCE YOUR SUMMER LOOK WITH THESE STYLE TIPS

A

s we head into summer, it’s important to find accessories that show off your style, while brightening up your wardrobe. Since summer brings an explosion of bold colors and vibrant patterns, this season’s trends are no different. So pack away your dreary duds, your winter boots and clean out that closet to get yourself ready for some fun in the sun. Unsure of where to start? The following summer accessories are a must: • Slip into a dress. A slip dress is a simple, elegant base layer that can be dressed up with accessories and is a trend worth paying attention to. To get a high-fashion look, layer them with frilly undershirts and jumpers.

(NewsUSA)

• Fancy your footwear. If you’re anything like Carrie Bradshaw, the best way to dress up an outfit is with a pair of wedge sandals. The right pair of wedges can glam up your look, make your legs look long, yet still allow you to move comfortably. If, however, you prefer shoes with little to no heel, you’ll be happy to know that flat-flats are in (think ballet slippers and gladiator sandals.) • Go glam with glasses. Choosing eyewear that’s not only stylish but functional can be difficult. Transitions lenses are great because they block 100 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays and are available in nearly all prescriptions. They also come in a variety of colors that complement your personal style and frame choice. With one pair of lenses, your eyes will feel comfortable indoors or out, in bright light, low light and everything in between. • Choose a hat. As important as it is to get some natural vitamin D, too much sun is bad for the skin. A floppy hat is a great accessory that lets you flaunt a style that fits your personality, get a little sun, but still protect yourself from harmful UV rays. • Grab a bag. A statement bag is the perfect way to enhance your look. When choosing the right purse for your outfit, think luxe fabrics, contrasting textures, and bright patterns. Pair with a great pair of glasses to pull off a celebrity look. For more information, please visit www.transitions.com.

Part 12

azel reviewed her notes once again. Nancy’s lamp worth thousands of dollars was stolen a couple days after her friend’s granddaughter, who happened to be dating a kid who was friends with a known druggie. She’d seen a bunch of kids at the back field of Leon’s property, great-grandfather of very same druggie. She had worked in enough investigations to not even consider those linked facts to be coincidence.

Calling Betty Smithson and asking to interview her granddaughter, or if her friend knew the youngster was involved in nefarious activities wasn’t an option. Betty was the first one to offer to help anyone in need, but she’d also be the first one to defend her family, whether right or wrong. No, Hazel couldn’t accuse Molly of the theft. Or anyone else with the evidence she’d gathered so far. It had been almost a week since Nancy had discovered her lamp missing. It was surely long gone at this point. Maybe she should look into how the thief could have sold it. She doubted anyone in Whiterock would have the means, or knowledge, to want the lamp. Besides, selling it local would be the ultimate in idiocy. The computer was probably the best place to start her research. Too bad she boycotted the thing. Well, not boycott exactly. She turned it on every week or so to check email and look up something, but she was not fond of the thing. Eddie, on the other hand, was a computer whiz. He’d be able to help her research, and maybe put all the pieces of the puzzle together. Hazel stilled her rocking chair and reached for the phone. Her smile grew wider as she turned the dial for each number. She wouldn’t say she was stuck in the past, but keeping things like her half century old phone helped keep her good memories strong and she saw no reason to dispose of it. Eddie answered on the second ring. “Hello?” “Afternoon. It’s me.” “Hazel. This mean you have more information?” he asked. “I do. I also have some theories and questions. Mind if I come over and we talk it through?” He chuckled. “Sure. I’m guessing there’s something you’re not adding to that question.” He hadn’t stopped being a good detective when he retired. “I might have some research for you to help me with on the computer.” He laughed louder. “I should have known. You still on the outs with yours?” “That thing drives me crazy. I have no idea how so many people spend so much time on one.” “While I’m around, I guess you don’t have to.” He paused for a moment, a muffled sound coming through the line. “MaryEllen’s got a roast in the oven. Why don’t you plan on having dinner with us, too?” Roast sounded a world better than the canned soup she’d planned for her evening meal. “Sounds great. Thanks. I’ll be there in half an hour.”
