Ana Lilia Martinez: Respect and integrity for an equitable sector
In a world where women continue to demonstrate their abilities and skills daily, the constant fight against female discrimination is a milestone in achieving a more equitable sector.
Throughout its existence, the energy sector has been characterized as an almost all-male industry. Today this barrier is breaking down, thanks to women’s preparation and greater participation in the segment. Ana Lilia Martínez Villalobos, plant manager at Distribuidora de Gas Jiménez S.A. de C.V., is proof of this.
Ana Lilia has demonstrated throughout her career that she has the skills and abilities that the sector requires. She has two master’s degrees muy importante para al desenvolvimiento de todos los colaboradores”. in financial administration and human capital management development and has worked in the energy industry for more than ten years.
Specializing in human capital management, the plant manager comments on the importance of female empowerment in companies. Every human being is different and therefore has different aptitudes and capabilities. Helping employees to grow and learn should not be a matter of gender but of the development of each individual.
Day by day, we have seen an increase in female leadership within companies. Women’s natural approach to detail has created in their leadership a more outstanding contribution to the professional and personal development of workers. Ana Lilia commented: “It is significant for me that women don’t separate our personal and professional development. We always see it very closely linked. So, the leadership that we can generate and develop is essential for the development of all employees.”
On the other hand, gender equity seeks equality in the choice of professionals, which means that capabilities are crucial when choosing one person or another, not gender. For Ana Lilia, this is a mantra: “My decision is always based on the person’s capabilities and not simply because they are a woman or not.”
Despite the progress made over time, many points still exist to achieve an equitable and non-discriminatory sector. The energy sector has a predominance of a little more than 80% of men. Few women enter this industry due to the discrimination suffered within it. The plant manager said: “It is not a professional way to run a company or to stay in a managerial position because the most important thing is to see the person as a person and not as a gender.”
With more than ten years of experience in the sector, Ana Lilia emphasized that apart from her professional achievements, the most enriching experience for her has been the gratitude of her collaborators for their support and attention. The development she has contributed to her subordinates boosts their careers and the sector because she trains workers with experience and knowledge to contribute to the industry. Demanding respect and giving it is crucial to achieving an egalitarian world and segment. The capabilities and skills of people will reach the development of women and men. Remembering that everyone is equal and has the same opportunities will create a world of much success and brotherhood. “Unfortunately, we sometimes think that men are our enemies. On the contrary, we are complementary and fundamental to each other,” she concluded.
