99 Top 3 Reason To Book A Boudoir Session ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 1

LETTERS FROM THE EDITORS If ever there was an issue that had its road blocks, it was this one! Torrential rains, wasp stings requiring medical attention in the middle of inspiration shoots, family emergencies, and more, but such is the life of magazine editors, and we just kept on keepin' on. Nothing could stop us from getting this issue out to you as it has more stunning content than ever. Literally! Instead of our usual four features of real local weddings, we found so many

gorgeous ones, we decided to include six this time. Every time we think we have seen the best our River Valley can give, the level of quality, detail and talent shown off by local couples and area wedding vendors keeps getting higher. This couldn't make us happier! You are WOWing us with your creativity! Our local vendors are blowing us away with their delivery of your ideas, and all of that is coming together on these pages to showcase our region as one of the top wedding areas in the country. Our goal is to continue to inspire you with the ideas that we put forth and the content that we curate. We hope you enjoy every inch of our pages and every pixel of our social media platforms as much as we enjoy bringing them together for you.

Cheers!

Our love for all things Gypsy finally had its day with our Gypsy Souls inspiration shoot. This patterned, jewel-tone style with Indian influences is a favorite of Editor-in-Chief JoElle Knight, but it still took years to settle on the ideas and look we wanted to finally bring it to life. The whimsical scarf tent is the stuff of boho-bride dreams! Created using an assortment of large patterned scarfs and poles mounted on barrels, we sweated it out under a blazing sun getting the draping of the fabric just right to make for a cozy exotic retreat for our lovely couple. Pillows, a vintage patterned couch, and the golden light of sunset made this sultry moment magic. Captured by our friend Laura Rush of Esther Bloom Photography, we love the romance and passion evoked in this cover shot.

SPRAY TANNING

Say “I Do” to a Professional Sunless Spray Tan Many brides are apprehensive to even consider getting a spray tan before their big day. We’ve all heard and seen the horror stories; streaking, smearing, blotchy areas, skin not sprayed, or even looking like an “Oopma- Loompa.” Wearing all white can be very daunting if you’re fair skinned, or even orange from a poor-quality spray tan. I want to help squash the negative stigma of Bridal Spray Tans for you and educate you on how to achieve the best-looking tan with pre and post care and where to go! First, I’d like to start with how spray tan solution colors the skin. DHA is an acronym for Dihydroxyacetone. DHA is the active ingredient found in all sunless tanning products. It is a simple carbohydrate that is primarily used as an ingredient in sunless tanning products. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, and by the fermentation of glycerin. DHA does not make your skin cells darker in pigmentation, but rather reacts with the proteins and amino acids found in the top layer of your skin to create a darkening effect or “Sunless Tan.” It is called the Maillard Effect; like when you take a bite of an apple and let it set, it turns brown. The quality of DHA and where and how it is derived is very important to how your tan will turn out. 23 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

PREPPING FOR YOUR SUNLESS APPOINTMENT

The next step is preparing for your appointment. It may sound like a lot to remember; however, it is very important to follow the pre care to ensure an amazing tan for your wedding. ● Exfoliate dead skin 24 hours prior to appointment. Your spray tan will fall off as dead skin exfoliates off, so come to your appointment with the least amount of dead skin as possible so it stays for a long time! You also do not want to shower/exfoliate immediately before your appointment as your skin will not accept the solution as best as it can. Please be sure that any prior selftanner or spray tanned is completely removed; you don’t want to layer on top of old sunless as it will be uneven/blotchy. To exfoliate you can use any product that has a grit to it or exfoliation gloves with any soap or body wash. * If you don’t have the products, forgot, or just want to ensure you’re exfoliated; I do have a product you can purchase day of your appointment that Norvell created to use immediately prior to your tan that will remove dead skin, lotions, oils, deodorant, and pH balance the skin. ($6) ● Shave/Wax 24-48 hours before your appointment. You will want to minimize your shaving after your spray tan, as the razor and shaving cream will exfoliate dead skin as you

shave. Waxing after your spray tan will completely remove it. (Waxing prior to spray tan is your best option as you won’t have to shave at all, you will have smooth skin for up to 3 weeks, and won’t have to shave on your honeymoon) ● Nail appointments 24-48 hrs prior to sunless appointment. It sounds like the ideal ‘girls night’ week of wedding to go get your nails done together then head to your spray tan appointment, however, that is not what is best for your spray tan results. When you get mani’s and pedi’s they exfoliate, use lotions, creams, oils; and all of that will block the sunless solution from penetrating into the skin. The solution will not absorb and streak on the skin and cause an uneven spray tan. ● Day of your appointment: Please come with no lotions, oils, body sprays, perfumes, or deodorant on the skin; as all of these will change the pH of your skin as well as potentially block the sunless solution from absorbing into the skin. It is very important to wear dark loose clothing after your spray

tan. Tight clothing will absorb the solution more. No leggings, spandex, tights, jeans, sports bras, socks or shoes. Sandals or flip flops are best. ●Rain: In case of rain be mindful to dress head to toe, or bring a raincoat, umbrella to protect your skin from getting rain drops on it or a complete wash out when it’s a heavy down pour. (I’ve had to walk clients out to their cars and have even pulled their cars closer to the door to ensure no rain touches their skin!) Water, rain, and sweat will dilute the solution and will cause spots development to stop where wet. DURING YOUR APPOINTMENT Professional Spray Tan Technicians know that not everyone is comfortable walking into a new place, with a new person, and getting completely naked. I try to welcome my guests by having a conversation first, asking if they need to use the restroom, thoroughly explaining how the appointment will go, and asking if they have any questions. I explain that they can wear one of three options: ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 24

1) their own undergarments 2) Disposable undergarments that I provide (some wear a top and bottom, some wear just the bottom) or 3) go bare. The only advice I give is that if your back shows in your wedding dress that you don’t wear a bra as the tan lines are harsh! Also, if you’re going on your honeymoon right away, that the tan lines may look drastic in your swim wear. I also explain solution options and my professional opinion of what to use for their skin tone and lifestyle; more than likely we have discussed this prior to booking their appointment, or they came in for a trial spray tan maybe for their bridal shower or photos. I then explain showering depending on their solution. I use both a 24-hour solution and a rapid rinse solution. During your development time period you will want to avoid getting the skin wet; drops of water from a drink, a dog licking your leg, rain, washing your hair even over a sink will get your forearms wet. You will want to avoid sweating/working out as well during this development time period. 25 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

The 24-hour solution: You will want to wait as close to humanly possible to 24 hours before you shower with soap. There is no early rinsing with this solution. You cannot get wet or sweat during this time. Rapid Rinse Solution (aka Rapid Development): The solution I use the most is called Norvell VenetianONE. You can rinse in 1 hour for a light tan, 2 hours for a medium tan, and 3 hours for a dark tan. You simply hop in the shower and rinse off the cosmetic bronzer that you see on your skin. When you leave your appointment, you have that wonderful instant gratification of a just off the beach tan, it also helps me see where I have sprayed. You will rinse all of that off (NO SOAP) and you’ll see what seems like your tan go down the drain, please don’t panic! Now, you can get wet, sweat, and live life like normal again! Phew! You will have a very light tan as it still takes the full 24 hours for your full tan to develop! I always say, never judge your tan or panic until it’s been 24 hours and you have showered with soap.

Trust the solution! POST CARE: HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SPRAY TAN After your first shower with soap, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Like I mentioned before, your spray tan sticks to dead skin cells, prior to your tan we want to get rid of dead skin, but now after your tan we want to maintain and keep those skin cells for as long as possible so you can get the most out of your beautiful tan! Drinking a lot of water to hydrate your skin from the inside is vital, your skin is the last organ your body gives hydration to, so if you don’t get in enough water your skin will become dehydrated and dead skin cells will form much quicker. Also, you’ll want to get a compatible skin moisturizer that will work with your sunless tan, not against it. Sometimes lotion ingredients are not the best for our skin. I retail Norvell’s Pre and Post care retail products that are designed work the best with your Norvell spray tan. (Hempz is another approved lotion) You will want to minimize shaving after your tan and avoid waxing. You can swim and workout. Soaking in the bathtub, hot tub or prolonged pool use MAY lessen the time of your spray tan but will not remove it in one session. *Please remember that there is NO sun protection in your sunless tan, and you will need to apply Sun Protection, as you can tan/burn through your spray tan* WHY I USE NORVELL I’ve been an Esthetician for 12 years; and I have spray tanned over 5 years. When I started out, I initially chose the wrong solution (I can’t even remember the name of

it now, but it was poor quality DHA, and I had many orange experiences) I quickly got rid of that, stopped spray tanning for the time being until I could research and learn more. I found Norvell Sunless, and I have never looked back! Norvell promises a “Just off the Beach Tan, every time.” They use top quality DHA from Italy, and several of their solutions have a violet undertone to cancel out orange! I typically only use the violet undertone solutions: Venetian, Venetian Plus, VenetianONE, Cosmo, and CosmoLight. I will carry a small quantity of their other solutions for when I see fit to use those on certain skin types/tones, or to blend a customized solution. Norvell also offers a full retail line of at home self-tanners in lotions or mousse, exfoliants, shower gel, body butter/moisturizer, and products to prolong your Sunless Spray Tan. Through Norvell I have completed their “Sunless 101” certification back in 2013, after a year of experience I was able to go to Nashville for Norvell University to complete my in depth sunless training, learned to spray tan for competitions/bodybuilding, and received my Master Level Certification; I am a “Master Blaster.” At that training in 2015 I fell in love with all things sunless and set a goal to change everyone’s preconceived thoughts and opinions about spray tans. I encourage brides to contact me for a trial spray tan about two months prior to your wedding. This is always great for your bridal photos, bridal shower, or an early bachelorette party. Then, for a Saturday wedding, you will want to schedule your spray tan for Thursday evening. (now you can plan backwards for all other appointments; for example, nails on ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 26

Wednesday, waxing/facial on Monday or Tuesday) I love to have bridal parties come get spray tanned together on Thursday evening, and sometimes schedules don’t allow and the others are more than welcome to come earlier in the day; but I will customize a bridal party package; and if there are 4 or more bridesmaids, I include the bride’s Spray Tan complimentary. Please remember to pre book your appointments with your spray tan technician. Thursdays are very busy spray tan days/ evenings and you’ll want to secure your appointment(s) early. I personally tend to book out 4-8 weeks early, especially for evening appointments (especially since I also do skincare and waxing services as well). During busy spray tan seasons, I will try to block out Thursday evenings for spray

tan appointments only (Valentine’s Day, prom, spring break, wedding months June/ October, early summer, fall family photos, Christmas Dances/events, and a lot of cheer and dance teams) I know it sounds like a lot to do and remember, but I promise you it is worth it to have that amazing glow on your wedding day! After your first session, it’ll be easier to remember all the do’s and don’ts. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions about spray tanning. Feel free to follow my Business page on Facebook and/or Instagram “DonnaCurryEsthetics”. I always accept new Spray Tan Clients, however I recommend pre-booking your appointment as after 12 years in the business I am no longer accepting new skincare and waxing clients at this time. FIGHTING BREAST CANCER

Real Men Wear Pink

For this issue's non-profit pairing, we worked with the American Cancer Society in conjunction with their Real Men Wear Pink campaign. With special thanks to our Real Men Wear Pink participants Mike Larson (Evansville Fire Department), Nick Iaccorino (WFIE) and David Hudspeth (Shoe Carnival) for modeling styles from Ella Park Bridal for the shoot photographed by Goad Photography. Real Men Wear Pink gives men a leadership role in the fight against breast cancer. Community leaders around the nation use the power of pink to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society's breast cancer initiatives, including innovative research, patient services, and education around screenings and risk reduction. It's one important way they're attacking cancer from every angle. As a Real Men Wear Pink candidate, leaders commit to: - Wearing pink throughout October - Raising awareness for the cause through their social media networks - Raising a minimum of $2,500 to help the American Cancer Society fight breast cancer Apart from skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women. In 2019:

33 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

About 268,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. About 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed in women (CIS is noninvasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer). If you or someone you love is concerned about developing breast cancer, has been recently diagnosed, is going through treatment, or is trying to stay well after treatment, the American Cancer Society can help you find the answers you need. Cancer awareness plays a large role in the lives of the Ella Park Bridal team. On November 27th of 2017, Lisa Daniel (coowner of EPB) was diagnosed with colon cancer. Mike and Lisa consulted several doctors and decided that emergency surgery was needed to remove the tumor from her colon. Two months after colon surgery, Lisa was diagnosed with stage four liver cancer. In late January 2018, Lisa had her right lobe removed along with her gall bladder. Lisa, in true Lisa fashion, recovered quite quickly and remained resilient throughout her 18 months of treatments. She stayed present in the store and reminded us all why we love working at Ella Park Bridal – we love making dreams come to fruition. Lisa has been clear of treatments since December of 2018 and is as peppy and spunky as ever! During this already difficult period, our alterations manager, Summer, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2018. Summer stayed as present as possible throughout her treatments, coming in to assist our other alterations specialists when able as needed. Thankfully, she had her last round of chemotherapy on November 1st of 2018 and is now a cancer survivor. Summer is back at work regularly and shining her light on each bridal gown she touches! In light of the events that Ella Park Bridal had endured since both Lisa and Summer’s diagnosis, Mike Daniel (coowner of EPB) has assembled a company team at the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure. This September will mark the second annual race for team “Say Yes to The Cure.” Ella Park Bridal has also joined forces with Gilda’s Club of Evansville. A percentage of each gown purchased at Ella Park Bridal goes towards an annual donation to help all individuals that have been impacted by cancer in the tri-state area. “These women are an inspiration to me for their hard work and dedication to bring you the best wedding experience possible… We help you, you help us, we help others. It’s the circle of life!” –Mike Daniel

SKINCARE

Get the Best Skin of Your Life

Get the best skin of your life with a HydraFacial. It is excellent for all skin types, even Rosacea or sensitive skin, it provides immediate results, and it has no downtime or irritation. Adding a series of HydraFacials to your pre wedding check list should be at the top, even for Mom. Regardless of your skin; normal, dry, acne, fine lines….this treatment is ideal for making you look your best! How? It - Gently cleanses and exfoliates the skin - Prevents and reduces the appearance of fine lines - Is indicated for the treatment of mild-moderate acne and superficial acne scarring. -Tremendously rejuvenates and hydrates your skin The HydraFacial is much more than just a facial, it penetrates deeper into the skin to correct and prevent skin aging on more of a cellular level, and it is part of the four steps that lead to the best skin of your life: Cleanse, Peel, Extract, & Hydrate. The Esthetician will examine your skin and tailor the treatment to you. This procedure has different hand-piece tips that can be selected based on the exfoliation needed. There are also different addons to go the extra mile such as Britenol for pigmentation, DermaBuilder for the fine lines/wrinkles & skin texture, and CTGF (connective tissue growth factor) will restore skin health and structure.

Yes, the canister that collected everything that came out of your pores or off of your skin! The HydraFacial process is painless and is a treatment that you will continue to see the results over a longer period of time. It’s a treatment that just keeps giving! STATIONERY

STATIONERY

Suite

In the not-so-distant past, when a couple was ready to pick out their wedding stationery, they had to visit a stationery shop. There, they would have the joy of swooning through dozens of books with not-so-varying designs-- touch and feel the paper, embossing and envelopes. They'd pick the best one to match their wedding, plug in their information and ta-da! Although the design wasn't as customizable, the artisans at the stationery shops knew their craft. You know you would receive a well made, high quality invitation to send out for your wedding! In our modern, digital age we still have a few custom stationery shops here and there, but stationery websites have replaced most of these brick-and-mortar shops with online smorgasbord of modern, slightly-morecustomizable wedding stationery. The downside of these online shops is not knowing exactly what you will end up with. I can guarantee that seeing "130 lb., 19.3 point" on the online description of the thickness of paper means absolutely nothing to an everyday person (unless you were like myself; raised in a print shop...then those numbers are somewhat ingrained in your being, ha!). I've had so many people come to me, disappointed in their online stationery purchase simply because they didn't really know what they were buying. The worst part is that typically these wedding shoppers weren't saving time or money

39 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

because they spent more than a few hours online digging through designs and plugging in their info, deciphering technical terminology and the result ended up costing the same, if not more, than a custom designed piece by a local stationery company. Wedding stationery has seen a significant change in the age of digital printing, the internet and a dramatic growth in designers. One thing that hasn't changed though is people. A small business owned by an artisan who is knowledgeable and knows their craft. One who can tell you the best options for your budget and style while still giving something unique to you and you your wedding! From ink colors to paper color choices, find someone able to blend color and skill - allowing for a

creative design while staying timeless. A wedding stationery designer who knows tradition but also knows and understands the
bride: this is who you want help you modern pick out and design your wedding stationery. Do your research, look at portfolios and find someone who will be the best option for you and your style! BRIDAL FASHION

Made for Maids

If you’re reading this, congratulations on your upcoming wedding! You’ve probably begun shopping for your wedding attire or at the very least have been “pinteresting” like a mom who just put her whole family on the keto diet. Although I can’t help you with eliminating grains from your lunchboxes or meal planning for the week, I can certainly give you some guidance in selecting the best bridesmaid’s dresses for your wedding party. Before you even LOOK at bridesmaids dresses, you should have a really good understanding of how those styles will complement your OWN gown. You are the Beyonce of Destiny’s child here, the star (sorry Kelly and Michelle), and you need to be the focus on your big day. Often times, your bridal

45 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

consultant will try to push you to begin your bridesmaids dress search on the same day that you choose your gown. They figure that they have you there, already elated and in the wedding-spending-mood, and they are going to try to close the deal. The single most important thing you can do with this information is RESIST. Do not select your bridesmaids dresses until you’ve adequately marinated in the idea of exactly how you want your party to accent your look. Let yourself take some time after receiving your Grammy before you start recording the next track, k? Your gown will set the tone for the entire album, um, I mean wedding partyand you just can’t rush perfect harmony. After you’ve had time to envision yourself in your dream dress, you are officially ready to

spawn the evolution of your bridal party. The second most important factor in this equation is considering your venue. Certain fabrics in bridesmaid gowns emit a mood that will play into your ultimate vibe- and the location of your party is truly a pivotal variable. If you have chosen a ballroom or country club wedding, satin, jersey, velvet or sequined gowns will hammer the classic, upscale vibe home. If you’ve selected an outdoor or more whimsical feel- such as a beach, a glammed up barn, or garden setting you’re probably going to want to stick with chiffon or tulle. Not only do these fabrics compliment the motif- they wear differently in various settings (satin + warm outdoor shenanigans= swamp maid, for instance). The diversity of your bridal party is the next element you will want to consider. Unless all of your maids are teammates from your college volleyball team, they are probably going to have pretty unique body types. Shannon with the Orange Theory upper body may be stoked to wear a halter, but Eliza- new mom of twins wondering how the hell carrying two babies around doesn’t equal Michelle Obama muscle tone, won’t feel the same. Luckily, the best thing to ever happen to a maid (other than cashing in on catching that elusive bouquet with her own wedding) is the trend of putting maids in various styles (HEAR ME LADIES this will be important later) in the SAME FABRIC. Breaking up the monotony of the party’s chosen style will not only be aesthetically pleasing, it will ensure that your maids are comfortable and happy, having at least some choice in what they have put on their bodies. This will also make them more willing to chipperly pay for their dress so we can place the order in a timeframe that doesn’t have me rising from my bed in a sweat, less than eight weeks before your nuptials.

Once you know that you’re willing to be the super cool bride who lets her maids have some choice in their style, (I am all for limiting these styles to fit the aesthetic of the event- for the record) you are ready to implement a color palette! The most common philosophy is to select one color for maids, however more recently brides have started throwing some shade variation into the mix- and I don’t mean she’s talking smack. Although using contrasting colors that create a rainbow-effect among your besties isn’t my jam (if you’re into that- more power to you, girlfriend), I am totally down for selecting a couple complementary colors or for putting various shades of a color into the mix. Think of it like a wall paint color card- you keep going back and forth between the top three,

ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 46

because all of them are awesome. Same concept. This final part happens to be what I was
screaming at ya about mid-article, I have strong feelings about it (sorry, not sorry)...PLEASE DO NOT allow your maids to select gowns from multiple manufacturers or of various fabrics if you are wanting a super cohesive look. Although there are some exceptions in mixing fabricssatin will have high sheen, chiffon and jersey absorb light, tulle can be transparent in certain settings- seeming muted, and velvet will just be an absolute mess next to anything else unless it is perfectly executed with another fabric. All of

this perfectly executed with another fabric. All of this translates to the light hitting each gown differently meaning you will in fact NOT have “fresh photos with the bomb lighting” making you, me, and Lizzo equally sad. Even chiffon from two different manufactures will look obscure when photographed- don’t risk it. I guess I’ve spent entirely too much time in paint stores lately but ol’ Sherwin Williams best demonstrates why you must order all the gowns from one manufacturer for color purposes. Black, being the most basic example (which most would think is safe to mix with) will be different from every single dress manufacturer- yes, even in the same fabric. One will have red undertones, another a purple tint, even greenish black is lurking in the mix...and eventually you just end up having to remix everything and paint your entire house in “repose grey.” The fabric for your maids’ dresses are all dyed and cut in a group- leaving no room for variation. If you are wanting your girls in a single color and sheen- ordering one fabric from one manufacturer is the ONLY way to achieve this. Ultimately, bridesmaid shopping is a lot of fun or at least it should be! I realize that I may have some of you sweating bullets thinking about it- but I promise that following these steps will make it less stressful when you are in the boutique staring down a hundred options. Aside from the flawless photos you will post to the gram, bonding with your girls during this experience (now that I’ve given you the inside deets) will be one of the things you remember most, and you can now do it in confidence that you will make the perfect choice for your event. Who run the world? Girls.

Historic Venues Perfect for Your Wedding

If you come out to New Harmony you are sure to encounter Christine Laughbaum. Not only is she an integral part of several community events, she also manages four of New Harmony’s most historic venues, The Rapp-Owen Granary, The Roofless Church, the Ribeyre Gymnasium and the Barn Abbey. Each location offers architecture, history and amenities rarely found in any other part of the River Valley region. The Granary is a majestic 200 year old, two-story building, boasting original rough-hewn stone and open timber framing. Ideal for weddings of 150 or less, you will be transported back in time in the glow of their many iron chandeliers and classic wood tables and chairs. The Roofless Church, considered one of the premier architectural gems of the region, was designed by award-winning architect, Phillip Johnson. It is an Interdenominational Church created without a roof to embrace the concept of all worship. Ideal for wedding ceremonies, its gorgeous gilded gates, grand scale and simplistic lawn overlooking the wild terrain of the Wabash River plains make for a peaceful and sacred space.

building can be rented for accommodations for guests, rehearsal dinner space or for accommodations for guests, rehearsal dinner space or even a small wedding reception. The Great Room features a massive fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the plains while the remaining section of the building has a large dining space with large trestle tables and chairs, a kitchen and two floors of bedrooms that can sleep up to 29 guests. Often used for retreats and family reunions, it is also a uniquely beautiful space to have your wedding and also offers the option of outdoor space for your ceremony.

Finally, the Ribeyre Gymnasium is the largest event venue available in New Harmony accommodating receptions for up to 450 guests. The historic gym was restored to its pristine present condition and has a 1930’s atmosphere enhanced by its banks of windows, restored stage, balcony and beautiful wood floors. Its Annex space is also included in the rental of the building and is perfect for bar and food table setup. Just one block from the center of town, the Ribeyre is within walking distance of the Roofless Church, the Granary and the New Harmony Inn. Our favorite tidbit of trivia about the gym is its claim to fame as the place where Marla Hooch is discovered in the classic movie, A League of Their Own!

Long Live Love ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY 9

JEN & ROBERT

We loved Robert’s email to us about how he and Jen met and pulled their wedding together so much that we wanted to give it to you, our readers, in its original form. Enjoy! The new girl from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania… a career woman that moved to Evansville for work – beauty, brains, a weirdly hot obsession with cars, Jen is the total package. The click of her heels walking down Main Street, her impressive attention to detail, her supportive love of all people… this chick is the real deal! Her mystique almost had me wondering if she was actually CIA shipped to Evansville on assignment. Nonetheless, we eventually met and had a connection from Day 1. Her wits and sarcasm sucked me right in (she’ll say I showed up and never left!). Whatever the story may be, I’m glad things have panned out the way they have – to an intimate, beautiful… boozy wedding. The details of our wedding were phenomenal! Jen really did a great job bringing character from every single piece we sourced for decorations, tableware, and clothing. She loves antiques – items with a story and she loves a good deal (thank God!). Our centerpieces were my favorite. They were mostly created using detailed assortments of copper, various metal ware, and lanterns from all parts of the world. Coming home to Etsy packages from France, Italy, Lithuania, Croatia, etc. could make one ask some questions… but Jen pulled together the pieces in such an impressive manner that I’ve gotten accustomed to just trusting her instincts! The bar menu also brought in a unique charm. Our signature drinks, Pittsburgh Plum Jen Fizz & Bob’s Bold Fashioned had all the punsters talking & kept the local Uber drivers busy. The venue was perfect for us. We stumbled into a great situation with 20 West – which allowed the flowers, decorations, and colors to really come together nicely. I can’t tell you how much we were complimented for having an impressive “vendor list.” I admittedly didn’t pay much attention to this in the months prior – after all, Jen was being her kickass boss-woman self to make sure all this “wedding stuff” got taken care of. However, after the completion of our wedding, it is clear to see how all our vendors and wedding planner were instrumental in facilitating our experience.

HANNAH & CONNER

Hannah and Conner’s love story began in 2016 during Hannah’s senior year in high school. Two years later Conner proposed, and they began planning their personalityinfused wedding. They both agreed that they didn’t want a formal event but rather a celebration that reflected their love for the outdoors. Hannah was raised on a cattle ranch, and Conner is a hunting and fishing enthusiast and 2nd generation Lineman. They settled on Starlight Lake in Marion, Illinois as the perfect place to have their ceremony and reception with its lakefront deck and rustic barn pavilion. Boots and cowboy hats were welcomed and encouraged, and both Hannah and Conner wore their own boots for the day. For their décor, they kept with a rustic look, and as it was October, added white pumpkins for a perfect seasonal detail. Large wood wire spools were used for their guest book table and cake tables. Surrounded by their closet family and friends, they danced the night away to country music basking in the beginning of their forever.

JO-ANNA & RONALD Singing brought Jo-Anna and Ronald first together when they were both
invited to a common friend’s karaoke contest. But, it wasn’t until one of them accidentally friend requested the other on Facebook, that they really got to know each other and eventually fell in love. It was on a snowy day in January that Ronald proposed to Jo-Anna on the basketball court during half-time at a Pacers game. She, of course, said yes and they immediately threw themselves into wedding planning. One of the first items tackled was ordering Jo-Anna’s bridal gown from Celebrity Filipino couturier Edward Teng. The custom made dress had to be ordered eleven months before the wedding and arrived from the Philippines fitting perfectly. Their three girls also received custom-made gowns by CocoMelody. Ronald and Jo-Anna ordered and assembled all their centerpieces and table décor to fit the glamorous wedding style JoAnna dreamed of. As they are both from a family of singers, they had no problem finding willing musicians and performers for their ceremony and reception. One of the highlights of the night was when Jo-Anna surprised everyone by singing to Ronald and then performing a choreographed dance with her bridesmaids! The evening was a celebration of a lifetime. 79 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

I recently had a couple traveling for their wedding, and we decided that we would just go a few days early and shoot a casual engagement session at one of their favorite locations (Antelope Canyon) instead of doing it here at home. I thought it was a wonderful idea, and we got to spend the day with zero stress, and were able to explore the area, thus allowing them to relax before the big day. Think about taking a Tri-State photographer with you to these exotic or locations within driving distance. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the same style photos, and be able to form that relationship with your photographer rather than just one day? 83 ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

EMILY & MIKE It’s rare to know who your soul mate is when you are in high school, but that is exactly how Mike and Emily met each other, after a school-wide Valentine’s Day questionnaire algorithm calculated each other as their top match. Upperclassman Mike walked down to Emily’s homeroom to introduce himself, and while they did not immediately start dating, they never forgot one another. 10 years later they found each other again and found those long-before calculations to be true. The pair wanted a laid-back natural day for their wedding and found the perfect venue with the stone chapel at Camp Reveal on Evansville’s far north side. With 120 guests in attendance, they said their vows in front of the quaint stone exterior and surrounding woods. For their reception, guests were shuttled across the street to their house where a backyard reception welcomed them with games such as corn hole and ping pong and activities such as fishing and a bonfire. Under a canopy of twinkle lights, they danced the night away with their match made in algorithm.

PERSPECTIVE

Marriage Advice A wise person once said, “After the wedding comes the marriage.” On the surface that piece of wisdom seems obvious, but it doesn’t always play out in real life. Weddings are, by their very nature, a whirlwind of excitement. Decisions abound. Decisions about the dress, rings, venues, photographers, flowers, music and more. Those decisions keep the couple busy, looking ahead to the event, feverishly trying create THE perfect wedding. Putting all that emotional energy into the planning can distract the engaged from attending to their own relationship. What should be a joyful process can turn into a firestorm of stress. How do you avoid that? Glad you asked. Perspective is vital to keeping the planning in the fun zone and out of the stress zone. Perspective comes when couples chose to step back, look at their goals beyond the glorious wedding day and look ahead to the life they truly wish to build together. This is where the guidance of a counselor or pastor can be a valuable asset. We often need another “set of eyes” on our lives to help us gain a clearer perspective. That other “set of eyes” will not be caught up in matrimonial flurry and can bring a sense of calm and clarity. In that calm clear atmosphere, partners are free to openly discuss their own ideas about what it means to be in a committed relationship. A relationship that is day-after-day for all the years to come. As I said in the beginning “After the wedding comes the marriage.” The marriage is the life two people grow into and that doesn’t begin when the threshold is crossed and all the Thank You notes are written. Marriage happens everyday and it is, in my opinion, the best part of being in love with another human being. That daily rhythm of work and meals, laundry and bills, conflict and grace is a dance that we get better at the more we attend to our partner and care for ourselves. Thinking down the road, gaining perspective during the wild and wonderful planning stages

of a wedding, can make all the days before THE BIG DAY more fun, more tender and more meaningful. Over the years I’ve had the honor of performing dozens of weddings and in each one I offer this poem, credited to a man named Wilferd Arlan Peterson. It is called THE ART OF MARRIAGE and the advice is “be the right partner.” By written by Ange Humphrey Pastor and founder of Fresh Air Community of Faith and the host of WEHT Local Lifestyles

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created. In the art of marriage the little things are the big things… It is never being too old to hold hands. It is remembering to say “I love you” at least once a day. It is never going to sleep angry. It is at no time taking the other for granted; The courtship should not end with the honeymoon, it should continue through all the years. It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives. It is standing together facing the world. It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family. It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy. It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways. It is not looking for perfection in each other. It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget. It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow. It is finding room for the things of the spirit. It is a common search for the good and the beautiful. It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal. It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

 REAL DESTINATION ELOPEMENT

Antebellum
 Romance in Charleston

Ardee & Doug knew they were falling in love when after meeting for a friendly lunch, they both felt an instant attraction and pull to each other. Sometime later, while on a weekend getaway tour of Magnolia Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina, Doug popped the question while standing atop the Wentworth Mansion in the cupola. When deciding where to have their wedding, Ardee, Doug and each of their 14 year old daughters decided there was no more perfect place than Magnolia Plantation to take their vows. After extensively looking for a Charleston photographer, Ardee decided she could think of no one better than Evansville photographer, Amanda King of Simply Savvy Photography to come to Charleston with them and capture their perfect day amongst the old antebellum beauty of the beautiful southern city. They worked with the staff at Magnolia Plantation to plan their simple ceremony with just their two daughters standing up with them. Silk bouquets made by J’Petals here in the Tri-State traveled well and will last as a beautiful memento to display in their home after the wedding. The memorable trip and intimate elopement ceremony couldn’t have been more perfect for them and their daughters, and the old-world setting made for a fairy-tale beginning to their new blended family.
