t’s our favourite time of year... not only are the evenings getting brighter and warmer, with an array of flowers in bloom, it’s also the perfect time to spot some of Cornwall’s wonderful wildlife, both on and off the coast. In the past few weeks alone, there have been sightings of countless dolphins, a pair of basking sharks and a magnificent humpback whale in Falmouth bay. Surely, that’s enough to tempt you down here, alone – you’re not likely to spot these beautiful creatures from your average city window! If you are thinking of making the move, we suggest a range of stunning and exclusive homes in highly sought-after locations, currently on the market with Savills Cornwall (from page 16), including the iconic Lloyd’s Signal Station on the Lizard peninsula (page 19), as featured in all its glory on the cover. If, however, for the moment you are happy just to enjoy a short break on the coast, then have a look at our selection of gorgeous stays in Polzeath (page 41), as well as a range of other options across Cornwall, including some fantastic Padstow breaks with Rick Stein (page 70). Cornwall has a reputation for being a creative hub, whether it’s food, theatre, art or music. We take a look at the growing culture of pop-ups in our opening feature (page 10), covering everything from spas to theatre, gin bars to bubbly, and, of course, a plethora of exciting food. Enjoy reading, and we hope to see you here soon!

CORNWALL is still the surf capital of the UK
One of the allures of heading to Cornwall is the chance to take to the waves and have a go at surfing. Did you know that there are more surfing beaches, and more surf shops and businesses, in Cornwall than any other county in the UK?
Luxury coastal stays at
Trereife House and Gardens Situated centrally on the Penwith peninsula and having been lovingly restored by the seventh generation of the Le Grice family, Trereife House and Gardens offers guests the best of both coast and country. What’s more, the house has just been invited to join the Bed and Breakfast section of the Good Hotel Guide, so it’s clear that this beautiful Queen Anne manor is on to a winner! From short breaks and special occasions to a stopover and long-stay parking as part of a trip to the Isles of Scilly, Trereife is a great place to stay. St Michael’s Mount, the Minack Theatre and St Ives are just a 15 minute drive away, and Newlyn and Penzance are within walking distance. Dogs are welcome in most rooms and there’s also the option of self-catering apartments, or glamping in the walled garden. The house is also available throughout the year for exclusive wedding and event hire. The gardens are open May to October, with house tours by the owner at 2pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons and light refreshments available. If you are thinking of having a go yourself, head over to The Surfing Sumo website, a treasure trove of information on the best surf schools and beaches, so that you can be prepared for your trip to Cornwall.
It’s hardly surprising considering that we are almost completely surrounded by coast and, in fact, more people have surf lessons in Cornwall than anywhere else in the UK. You may be interested to discover that those trying their hand at surfing don’t fall into the stereotypical demographic you’d expect, with over 60% in 25-45 age group,

Stacks Cornwall helps clients find the perfect home “I love my job,” says Clare Coode of property search company Stacks Cornwall. “I travel all over this beautiful county hunting down the finest properties for my clients, understanding their specific property requirements and ensuring their dreams become a reality.” Stacks Cornwall takes the hard work out of house hunting, advising on area, providing an inside track to properties being sold on and off the market, and managing the more challenging negotiations. 40% of property transactions currently fall through between offer and exchange, a figure which falls to just 3% when Stacks are involved.
explains Clare, “so buyers are finding that the prime properties are slipping through their fingers. With an unrivalled address book and excellent relationships with the county’s leading estate agents, we ensure that our clients’ transactions are managed efficiently, making buying property a stress free and enjoyable experience.”
“The market in Cornwall can be tricky to navigate and, perhaps surprisingly, there is currently far more demand than supply,”

gossip NEW riverside dining in London
EXCLUSIVE ALE, FRESH
pizza and live music, at Sennen Just in time for the summer season, the team at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove have unveiled their new Surf Den bar – a relaxed, outdoor bar that’s perfect for beach lovers, wave-chasers and, indeed, anybody who enjoys a thirst quenching drink, chilled DJ sets and freshly baked pizzas, all with the stunning view of Sennen’s crystalline waters.
Rick Stein’s exceptional cuisine can now be enjoyed at a beautiful riverside location in London. Situated idyllically on the banks of the River Thames in Barnes, this new restaurant has been superbly decorated by top interior designer, Jill Stein. With a subtle industrial theme, which is warmed with velvet cushions and enhanced by enchanting hanging plants and greenery, you will feel utterly transported while you indulge in your riverside meal. As well as the main restaurant and courtyard terrace, you will also find a small seafood bar and separate bar area, allowing guests to pop in and enjoy a drink or two.
SHOULD you coco?
Incredibly passionate about quality, the team uses only the finest, local ingredients when custom-making your pizza. What’s more, each one is made fresh in front of you – even the homemade thin crust, but don’t be offended if they don’t share their secret ingredient! Combine one of these with the signature ale, Head Launcher – crafted exclusively by Skinner’s Brewery – and you’ve got a beachside dining experience that ticks all the boxes. So, next time you’re out exploring the reaches of west Penwith, why not stop by?
Faithful to Rick’s roots, you’ll find the freshest seafood straight from Cornwall on the menu, which includes dishes such as Dover sole à la meunière, fruits de mer, Indonesian seafood curry and salt and pepper prawns. The set lunch menu is perfect for those in need of a quick respite before heading back to the office. For more information or to book visit www.rickstein.com or call 02088 789462
Summer is all-but upon us and it’s time we started making the most of the wonderful fresh produce that makes this county a nationwide foodie favourite. St Ives is great for this – especially with a trip to local chocolatiers, I Should Coco. ‘Your chocolate – your way’ is the team’s motto, but what does that mean? Well, they’re inviting you to take part in chocolate workshops, where you can try your hand at crafting your own chocolate creations, for yourself or as a gift. Even if you just want to see what it’s all about, why not pop in and experience all the tempting tastes and smells? From chocolate dipped strawberries to fresh cream truffles, what better way to satisfy that sweet tooth?

Tofothpe s p u p o P From the fringes of our coast to the heart of the high street, pop-up ventures, in many and varied forms, are taking Cornwall by storm. WORDS BY
Dan Warden
W
ith summer just around the corner, now’s the time to consider how to make the most out of Cornwall in the sun, a question that’s relevant to both out-and-about weekenders as well as small, local businesses. There is one solution – a concept that, over last few years, has taken the nation by storm: pop-ups! But what is a pop-up? In basic terms, a pop-up venture is one that can, quite literally, pop up anywhere. In Cornwall, the unique geography means you can find them in the most unusual and astounding locations, from the sands of the north coast to the clifftops of the south and anywhere in between. Interestingly, while popups are by no means a new concept, there’s a common misconception that they’re limited to
foodie stalls and bars. On the contrary, being without the same restrictions as high street stores, commercial pop-ups appear wherever the crowds are and naturally, the more that emerge along our coastline, the more intense the competition becomes. In order to succeed, new ventures need to offer something different, something that sets them apart from the crowd and it’s this, I think, that makes them so exciting! You’ll already have seen some of the converted vans, horse boxes and shipping containers dotted around the coast, but it goes deeper than that: pop-ups are beginning to change the face of the high street itself, particularly where there’s empty shop space in need of filling.

Legal stumbling blocks such as paperwork and unaffordable overheads can put off even the most enthusiastic venture. So, when I spoke with Helen Willett of Coodes Solicitors, Penzance, I was pleased to learn that, by working closely with PUPz and Penzance Business Improvement District, she’d been able to find a solution. “There was a need for a difference to be established between what defines commercial and community pop-ups.” Helen explained how she drafted a new, comparatively shortened document that both satisfies uneasy landlords and makes things easier for tenants, a huge step for Penzance!

Just look at Pop Up Penzance (PUPz). I recently caught up with PUPz co-founders, Maria and Rachel who, being incredibly passionate about what they do, explained how they like to take empty shops and create opportunities for others to utilise the space; improving the appearance of the high street by doing away with boarded doors and windows. “Our aim is to bring footfall into the town centre by creating a variety of happenings and to offer opportunities to others to engage the public on the high street.” Working alongside the local community, they’ve been involved in a number of projects to this effect, including The Pop Up Tate. Launched in collaboration with Tate St Ives and artist Emma Saffy-Wilson, the aim was simple – to put art-making opportunities under the noses of Penzance’s youth by transforming an unused space into a hub of activity and within days, artistic young locals had taken positive ownership of it. Impressively, PUPz also involves itself in commercial ventures, recognising the importance of being able to ‘dip a toe’ before plunging in headfirst. Mousehole Fish, for instance, having initially ran a four-week pop-up trial is still open, four years later! As you might expect, the work that Rachel, Maria and co. do must inevitably encounter obstacles.

Foodie and Theatre é ABOVE The Miracle Theatre cast set against a dusky Atlantic
ê BELOW Theatre is all the more dramatic in an authentic, outdoor setting
Pop-up theatre is becoming ever more popular and it’s easy to see why. A high-calibre performance is one thing, but add to it the dramatic setting of a woodland or clifftop and it becomes suspended in half-reality, gaining a sense of authenticity that’s impossible to achieve indoors. I spoke with Annie Ukleja, Managing Director at Miracle Theatre, who told me: “We love the fact that we can turn up in the middle of nowhere and transform a field, garden or clifftop into a wonderful theatre venue. We just pull up in our big pink van, set up the stage, set and sound system and we’re ready to go!” According to Annie, even the changeable Cornish weather doesn’t put them off, explaining that: “Whatever Mother Nature contributes on the night will inevitably lead to a one off combination, meaning no show is ever the same!” A great spot for enjoying the thrills and spills of outdoor theatre is Carlyon beach, near St Austell. Enjoying its own devoted hard-stand area, Carlyon sets the bar when it comes to things that pop-up and throughout the summer, visitors can expect a fantastic programme of events which, in the past, have included pop-up performances from Rogue theatre, the popular Skyscape cinema on the beach as well as fantastic foodie banquets – dinner and a show!
Taking pride of place at Carlyon, last year, was Ostraca, Fal Oyster’s pop-up Oyster Box. Built from a shipping container and fitted with a hydraulic decking and full bi-fold doors, this smartly converted-contraption is used primarily as a go-anywhere oyster bar. Impressively, it can also be used as an open lounge, a beach bar, a popup restaurant; even a live music venue, making it a fine example of what makes pop-ups so unique! For details on where you can find Ostraca this summer, visit www.faloyster.co.uk. In the name of enjoying the recent, glorious weather, my partner and I went to meet co-founders of Craftworks Street Kitchen, Mick and Danny as they readied their all-new food truck for service. Having already had huge success with the Craftworks Street Kitchen restaurant in Truro, the pair decided to seize the opportunity to put their winning formula on wheels and, if the brisket beef burritos we tried that afternoon are anything to go by, I’d say they’re definitely onto a winner! Throughout the summer, you’ll find the Craftworks truck in Padstow, working alongside Padstow Kitchen Garden. It’ll also be attending certain festivals over the warmer months, so be sure to keep an eye on the Facebook page. Indeed, festivals are a great way to enjoy the top of the pop-ups, with

Festivals Cornwall’s festival scene presenting some great opportunities for businesses looking to cater to a crowd seeking new experiences. One such company that’s happy to oblige is Kernow Springs, with its roaming Eco Spa. Company founder, Martin Dean and his family – who love going to festivals – have long-since recognised that revellers, instead of slumming it, are starting to seek a little luxury among the usual festival-frivolities. The spa, which includes plunge pools, hot tubs, saunas – you name it – is a wonderful break from the usual, grubby day-to-day of festival life. It’s also available for hire for weddings, parties and corporate events and, being a ‘roaming’ spa, the team will happily set up in almost any location, be it on the side of a lake or atop a cliff overlooking the sea. To find out more visit www.kernowsprings.co.uk. We saw the Kernow Springs team in action at this year’s summer Masked Ball, a fiercely popular date on the national festival calendar and a hub of pop-up activity. Kelvin Batt, the man behind the magic explained: “The Masked Ball has grown a great reputation, not only for throwing the best parties but also for doing things locally. I moved down when I was young and there wasn’t much going on here. Events such as the Masked Ball provide a great boost for the local economy!”

There you have it. Whether it’s a commercial venture that’s just testing the water; one that’s aimed at filling unused shop space and increasing footfall in the high street, or one that continues to give back to the locals, year after year, pop-ups have so much to offer the Cornish community. And, with food and music festivals lined up throughout the summer, as well as static popups just waiting to be discovered throughout the county’s most stunning locations, there’s plenty to see for anyone getting out and about. Remember, if you just keep an open mind and aren’t afraid to try something new, you’ll be amazed at what you might find.

PROPERTY | FLUSHING
DESTINATION
Flushing
Take a tour of the beautiful riverside village of Flushing, overlooking the bustling harbour town of Falmouth.
F
lushing is a picturesque village across the river from Falmouth, which owes its name to 17th century Dutch builders who came to construct piers and sea walls, before settling in the village. Retaining its charm with winding waterside streets, pastel-coloured terraces of 17th and 18th century houses and a close-knit community, Flushing is a very special village within easy reach of Falmouth (five miles by car or a short ferry ride), and around 11 miles drive to the county town of Truro. The village provides local amenities including a general store, two public houses and a restaurant. There is also a highly regarded primary school, church and chapel. Sailing enthusiasts will find an active sailing club in Flushing and the superb facilities at Mylor Yacht Harbour are around a mile and a half away, with excellent storage, moorings, a clubhouse, café and restaurant. Boatbuilding is still a popular trade in the village, and across the water in Falmouth. Cedarwood (guide price: £1,000,000) is a bespoke, architect-designed eco home set above Flushing, with reverse-level accommodation designed to make the most of the views towards Falmouth and Penryn. There are three ground floor bedrooms, two
with river views, and a first floor master suite with water views. A large balcony, accessed through sliding doors from the sitting room, provides panoramic views, while the rear garden is terraced and has space for a studio (professionally produced garden plans are available). Pencreek House (guide price: £2,000,000) is set outside the village, sitting in six acres and with south-facing land sloping down to the banks of the Penryn river and a privately owned beach. The house is a stylish and contemporary residence, originally build in 1959 and more recently renovated to provide a bright, spacious home, with free-flowing living space and bi-folding doors in many of the ground floor rooms leading on to an expansive flagstone terrace. There are six bedrooms (two en suite), and potential for a self-contained ground floor annexe. Many of the rooms enjoy superb views up the Penryn river towards Falmouth and St Mawes.

| PROPERTY THE LIZARD
h s i n r A Co ICON
We explore the fascinating and utterly unique Art Deco Lloyd’s Signal Station on the Lizard peninsula.
L
loyd’s Signal Station, on the market with Savills Cornwall (guide price: £750,000), is a stunning example of Art Deco architecture, in an unrivalled position on the south coast of Cornwall. Located at the southernmost point on the British mainland, the Signal Station is a former communications hub, built in 1872 by Fox & Co Shipping and later purchased by Lloyd’s of London. Involved in the movement of over 1,000 ships per month at its peak, the team of signallers at the station used flags to signal to passing ships, while communicating with London via telegraph. This removed the need for the boats to stop at Falmouth to receive orders and greatly aided the speed of trade and communication at the time. The Signal Station was decommissioned in 1969, before being converted into a home. Still featuring red lead lines on the side of the house to guide ships, the property is a familiar sight on the south coast, recognisable to all those who pass by water. The house has four bedrooms, a large sitting room and an open kitchen-dining room with views through the bay window out towards the sea. With a large roof terrace providing uninterrupted views of
the sea, coast and countryside, Lloyd’s Signal Station represents an opportunity to own an historic and iconic property on the south coast. The property is on a long lease from the National Trust, with 76 years remaining. This is your chance to own a genuine slice of Cornwall’s maritime history.

iven the rise in popularity of the staycation, particularly on the British coastline, it is unsurprising that there are more and more people looking to completely change their lifestyle and to move to Cornwall to set up boutique B&Bs or guesthouses. T
he Roseland is one of the county’s most picturesque and unspoilt areas, bordered by the Fal estuary to the west and the Channel to the east. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Roseland has long been known for the quality of its landscape and coastal scenery, with many peaceful walking routes through the countryside and on the South West Coast Path. The coast around the Roseland is easily explored by boat or canoe and the waters around the are renowned for high quality sailing. At its tip, the village of St Mawes sits in a sheltered bay with views out of the Carrick Roads towards Black Rock and the Channel beyond. On the market with Savills are two properties that sit at the ‘gateway’ to the Roseland peninsula, offering peaceful countryside living but within very easy reach of the area and the attractions of the rest of the Roseland. Bosue Farm at St Ewe (guide price: £750,000) is a Grade II Listed traditional Cornish farmhouse in a peaceful rural setting. Just 1.4 miles from the Lost Gardens of Heligan and 3.5 miles from the closest beach at Pentewan, Bosue is ideally placed for exploring the unspoilt countryside of the Roseland and its many picturesque villages. The John Nash designed Caerhays Castle and its extensive
gardens are just five miles to the south of the house. Bosue Farm has four bedrooms with views over the gardens, a farmhouse kitchen with a Tregothnan Estate chestnut lintel above the cooker alcove and three reception rooms. The gardens are mature and feature an array of specimen shrubs and trees, and a vegetable garden. Higher Polmenna at Portholland, near Tregony (guide price: £2,000,000), is a renovated country home, which has been extended to provide six bedrooms (five en suite), four reception rooms and a stunning orangery. The house is bright, modern and charming while retaining its original features and traditional appearance; the current owners have gone to great lengths to source appropriate materials during the modernisation of Higher Polmenna. AND STORM CHASING
Discover the magic and variety of Cornwall’s wild west and serene south coast.
T
he south and west coasts of Cornwall are home to hidden coves, traditional villages, peaceful harbours and wide sandy beaches. There are extremes in this part of the county – secluded and idyllic riverside properties offering a sedate lifestyle but with the convenience of being within easy reach of major towns, and the opposite: properties far out on secluded peninsulas with panoramic sea views, frequent local wildlife spotting, and total peace and quiet. Within easy reach of Truro and Falmouth, Gunfield Lodge in Feock (guide price: £1,250,000) is a wonderful example of a family home set in private gardens and just moments from Loe beach. Loe beach is well known for its watersports centre, café, public slipway and moorings, allowing access to the tree-lined creeks and rivers of the Carrick Roads, an area favoured by sailing enthusiasts. Nearby is the National Trust owned Trelissick House and gardens, while the surrounding countryside and coast path provide ample opportunities for walks and exploration. Gunfield Lodge enjoys water views and is a spacious and well-designed home. There are four bedrooms, three of which have superb water views, a living room with a curved window overlooking the gardens and the water beyond, a formal dining room, a bespoke kitchen with a window seat, a snug with a wood burner and a study. The west and south-facing gardens are mainly lawned, and are planted
with a variety of trees and shrubs. There is also a raised kitchen garden and potting shed to the rear of the property as well as a double garage/boatstore, with potential to be converted into an annexe. Cove Cottage (guide price: £795,000) is located at Cape Cornwall, an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty on Cornwall’s most westerly coastline. The Cape is an important area for conservation, frequented by a rich diversity of wildlife including basking sharks, whales and dolphins. Nearby Priest’s Cove is a traditional fishing cove with colourful lobster boats, while Porthledden Bay is a wide rocky bay providing surf for experienced surfers. Cove Cottage has three bedrooms, the master bedroom providing stunning views over the garden and out to sea. The ground floor has an open-plan sitting/dining room which opens onto a south east-facing terrace, and the second sitting room has a vaulted ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto a terrace which is perfectly positioned for watching the sunset over the water. The garden is terraced down to a paddock and also features a fisherman’s shed, which offers the opportunity for conversion into a small studio or workshop.

THE JOY
Enjoy riverside living at its very, very best in the delightful harbourside town of Fowey.
T
he town of Fowey (pronounced ‘Foy’) and the village Polruan sit opposite one another at the natural harbour mouth of the river Fowey. The river extends for six miles inland towards Lostwithiel, while the coast and countryside around the river are largely in the ownership of the National Trust. The waters around the harbour are renowned as some of the best sailing waters in the county, and access can be taken to both Fowey and Polruan at all states of the tide. There are a number of tributaries and creeks to explore by boat and footpath, including a beautiful coastal footpath known as the Hall Walk from Polruan to Bodinnick. Fowey provides an excellent range of small shops, along with well-regarded restaurants, galleries and boutiques. There are two sailing clubs in the town, which organise regular competitive sailing events. Across the water, Polruan provides two pubs, a school, village hall and shop, as well as a thriving boatbuilder. On the market with Savills, 3 Dolphin Houses (Fowey) and Tommy’s (Polruan) both offer the chance to own a property with water frontage. 3 Dolphin Houses (guide price: £1,250,000) is an elegant Grade II Listed Georgian
townhouse with three to four bedrooms, fantastic south-facing views and a waterside terrace garden. The house is beautifully presented and incorporates many period features, while quality fixtures and fittings throughout give a luxurious feel. The lowmaintenance waterside terrace garden has a landing platform and provides access to the water via steps; the current owner has a frape licence on mooring. Tommy’s (guide price: £1,000,000) was built on the site of a former boathouse and named after a well-known village character. On the market for the first time since 1959, Tommy’s occupies a prime waterfront position and has water access, a boat store and a mooring (on licence). The house has reverse level accommodation; the first floor is designed to take in the outstanding view, with a glass balcony off the sitting room running the width of the front of the house. There are three bedrooms on the ground floor, all with views up the Fowey estuary.

here are many ways to make the most of the Cornish landscape and undoubtedly one of the best is to enjoy it from the balcony of a property overlooking the local vista. With this in mind, we are always on the lookout for the next great property with an unbeatable location. A favourite amongst locals, Holywell Bay is an absolutely stunning, north coast location. The well-known Gull Rocks attempt to steal the show by providing an impressive and eyecatching marker but the true feature of this Cornish haven is the expanse of golden sand nestled within a backdrop of rolling dunes and striking cliffs. With such an impressive coastal location we were excited to find out if there were any new properties that took advantage of these memorable landscapes. Luckily, local family-
run company Legacy Properties share the same love of coastal living as we do and are constantly on the look out for new beachside development opportunities. The Rocks is an exciting development of ten luxury houses. Nine of the houses will have four bedrooms while the tenth will have five. Carefully designed and built to enhance the owners’ living experience, these houses offer a perfect blend of luxury living and coastal calm with clever use of clean lines and a design to complement the incredible surrounding landscape. The dining/living area boasts stylish, open-plan living, while details such as ceiling mounted speakers help create an environment ideal for entertaining. Going through to the kitchen you will find top of the range appliances, quartz worktops and feature lighting, while the bathrooms show off Mandarin Stone tiles along with

ABOVE ì RIGHT è BELOW î Stylish and practical, custom made shutters from Shuttercraft can fit into unusally shaped windows, equally at home in a traditional or modern setting
hile curtains have acted as a faithful and often beautiful companion to our windows, Cornwall is seeing a rise in demand for shutters. Of course, it isn’t difficult to see why people are opting for this classic solution. Not only do shutters add to your home’s kerb appeal with their elegant and classic look, they also bring numerous benefits including light and privacy control, thermal and sound insulation, ease of maintenance and an added level of security to your home. In response, national business Shuttercraft has opened its latest location in sunny Cornwall with local specialists Paula and Alan Hibbens taking up the helm as owners and directors. This means that, although a part of the national network, Shuttercraft Cornwall is an independently owned and operated family business. Based in Newquay, Shuttercraft now offers a range of made-to-measure shutters in a variety of materials and styles. The shutters are custom made and measured, fitting perfectly in any window shape, including in older houses where the floor and wall levels may have shifted over the years. These shutters also fit any style, looking fantastic in period homes, converted factory apartments, modern new builds, barn conversions and even contemporary business suites. Paula explains: “Shutters are really versatile, as well as offering practicality, they can transform a room allowing the light flow to be adjusted during the day and with the changing seasons. Shuttercraft’s leading brand of premium plantation shutters are beautifully designed, and when combined with professional installation, it’s easy to see why they are so popular.” Indeed, the ever-popular full height shutters provide maximum control over light and privacy levels while café styles bring a dash of French chic. Shutters are even an excellent solution for feature windows of all shapes and sizes from arched and angled to circles and octagons. The timeless styles and enviable flexibility are reason enough to update your home with some fabulous new shutters.

INVOKING
a e s the We take a look at two stunning waterside developments from Coastal Spaces.
T
he coast is an infinite source of inspiration, for artists, writers and photographers. There is something endlessly fascinating and alluring about the junction where land meets ocean that brings out some of the finest work in people. But often overlooked is the role it plays in architectural design. A trip around Cornwall’s stunning coastline will not only reveal galleries full of beautiful seascapes; indeed, if you look around you, you’ll find masterpieces of another kind perched on the clifftops. Creating new buildings is a responsibility, especially when considering that they are intended to last as permanent additions to the landscape. Not only must they represent the age in which they are built, they must stand the test of time, remaining sympathetic to their surroundings as fads come and go. When a location – like Cornwall – is so naturally beautiful, it ups the stakes, demanding a response that complements the landscape it inhabits. It is these thoughts that make Coastal Spaces such an exciting prospect. This Cornish design company, based out of the delightfully named Lighthouse Cottage in Wadebridge, is led by Sean Hodgson. Simply put, Sean and his team get coastal living instinctively and use their collective experience and creativity to design stunning
spaces that capitalise on the views our coast is blessed with, while make the living spaces truly luxurious and inviting. While Coastal Spaces’ designs are respectful of their environment, incorporating local natural materials and gently nodding to the past, they are by no means shrinking violets. Instead, you’ll find bold, daring pieces of architecture, with contemporary clean lines, at the very forefront of modern design. The team only ever work on a small number of projects at a time, to ensure they devote the necessary attention and focus to each one. “Through highly personal and careful consideration of location, setting and backdrop, Coastal Spaces brings a part minimalist and part modern architectural approach to exclusive waterside locations across the UK,” explains Sean. “From initial concept, through design and development, each project is unique and offers unprecedented levels of living space both internally and externally for those in search of a distinct coastal home.” To see an example of Coastal Spaces’ ingenuity, you need only look at current project Polurrian Bay Villas in the grounds of the popular luxury hotel in the cliffs above Mullion on the Lizard peninsula. These bright and spacious open-plan villas offer the very best in coastal living. With only six in the development,

this is your chance to own a stunning home in an extremely exclusive setting. Invoking the classic Edwardian seaside villas found across the coast, each villa is fronted with a large balcony, perfect for gazing out upon the Atlantic and the Celtic Sea. The South West Coast Path is quite literally on your doorstep, offering miles upon miles of stunning scenery to explore, before returning to your luxury space to enjoy cocktails as the sun melts into the horizon. Another wonderful advantage of the development is that each villa takes full advantage of the facilities at the Polurrian Bay Hotel, including both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sumptuous spa, and an Ofsted-registered crèche. What’s more you can participate in the leaseback scheme, meaning you can earn money from your property when you are not using it yourself – making it an attractive proposition financially too. With three of the six villas already reserved, you’ll want to get in quick if you want to secure a piece of the dream. Another deluxe development from Coastal Spaces is Una St Ives, just inland from Carbis Bay, regularly cited as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Indeed, you’d be hard pressed to find a more wonderful location in which to relax and unwind. With an array of beaches on your doorstep, it’s within easy reach of
the hustle and bustle of St Ives, with its independent boutiques, bars, bistros and galleries, including the recently reopened Tate St Ives overlooking Porthmeor beach. Una St Ives comprises of a cluster of chic and contemporary eco houses, clad in wood and topped with sedan roofs, with warm rusty hues that change with the season. Each home is wonderfully bright and spacious, and features a balcony to make the most of indoor-outdoor living, savouring the quality of light that St Ives is famed for. The complex also boasts its own stateof-the-art gym, indoor swimming pool, steam room, Jacuzzi, and a sumptuous spa, so you can indulge in some much needed recuperation when not out enjoying all the area has to offer. To learn more about either of these developments, or to discuss a coastal dream of your own, contact Sean and the team from Coastal Spaces now.

T
he coast is an ever-changing yet constant delight. Made up of incredible colours, from the blues of the water to the hues of granite and rock, it’s a sight we never tire of seeing. Indeed, it’s such an iconic theme that we constantly seek ways to include these stunning styles in our homes, so that even when we are away from the sea we can benefit from its calming and beautiful presence. We were, therefore, delighted to see that Cornish artist Jo Downs has been hard at work creating some amazing new collections that help us bring the coast home. Following on from her celebratory 20th year in business, Jo Downs has launched into her third decade with a string of stunning, handcrafted new interior collections for 2017. First to launch in her home county of Cornwall, and now available online and at her gallery in Ripley, Woking, is the new Celtic Coast collection. This stunning collection includes decorative bowls, candle stands, mirrors and luxury grand-scale feature pieces, all inspired by the beautiful British shoreline and cut, crafted, fired and finished at her Cornwall studio in clear glass and dazzling copper finish. Priced from just £11 to £695, the range has pieces for everyone with a passion for stylish design and contemporary British craft. Celtic Coast is available alongside sister collections including Jo’s romantic Celtic Hearts collection, and the geometrically inspired Morwenna collection in warm tones of copper, gold and russet. MAKE A
Using the timeless technique of statement furniture you can define any room’s style with ease.
O
ur homes are an extension of ourselves. With each placement of furniture, with each colour chosen and with each style picked over another, we say something about who we are and what we like. When you walk into a room in your home what do you see? Do you see simplicity, a passion for vintage and classic looks or do you rejoice in colour and vibrancy? Well, whatever inherent style you inject into your home one fantastic way to shake up a space is to include a piece of statement furniture. Don’t let this phrase put you off though. A statement piece doesn’t necessarily mean a bright colour and crazy design, it can simply be a piece of furniture that demands attention, whether due to an impressive design, a striking but complementary colour or simply due to where it is placed – for example, a beautiful mirror placed in isolation on a bare wall is sure to catch the eye. At Uneeka, you are sure to find your perfect statement piece unique to your style. For those with an adventurous flair could try combining bright colours with pastels, a new and interesting adaptation of showcasing new with old. Or, for those with a love of all
things individual will adore Uneeka’s range of reclaimed and vintage storage cabinets. This range is filled with bright colours, pastels, multi-layered paint and glassfronted pieces or with decorative details on the handles and clips. While these eyecatching cabinets will probably be used to store your prized possessions, I wouldn’t be surprised if they turned into a prized possession themselves. The collection of frames, mirrors and other display units don’t just make a statement of style, as they are all ethically sourced from fair trade suppliers these furniture pieces also make a statement of ethics. Similarly, the Luna frames come in a variety of colours and styles due to the fact they are made from recycled, reclaimed timber from South Africa. With so many statement pieces to choose from, make sure whatever you go for adds character, colour and style to your room and a smile to your face.

s far as holiday destinations go, they really don’t get much better than Polzeath, on Cornwall’s north coast. Here you can enjoy fantastic family beach holidays, where lifelong memories are forged amidst surf and sunsets. Keen to find the best stays available, we caught up with Alex Roads of John Bray Cornish Holidays to discover his top picks to rent in Polzeath. “Each of our 78 holiday cottages in Polzeath are unique in that they are styled by the owners themselves,” explains Alex, “so we can offer holidaymakers a great choice of cool, beachside properties, as well as stylish family retreats set just a short walk away from the coast.” Every property in our selection enjoys access to the sandy beach at Polzeath, and is available – as we type – to book this summer. However, you’d better get in there quick if you want to secure your dream holiday! Sandrock (sleeps ten) Newly added to the portfolio, this beautiful contemporary home offers coastal living at its finest and enjoys expansive views of Polzeath beach, perfect for surf watching and al fresco dining. Featuring five luxurious en suite rooms, and plenty of parking, it’s the ideal retreat for bringing the whole gang together. 3 The Sands (sleeps eight) A chic bolthole by the sea, finished to exacting standards, 3 The Sands enjoys every modern comfort, while being within walking
distance to both Polzeath and Daymer beaches. The garden is a beautiful spot for evening barbeques after a day at the beach. Epphaven (sleeps eight) A wonderfully appointed property in the luxury Pinewood development, in an elevated position overlooking Polzeath, Epphaven enjoys two acress of private communal grounds. You can even bring your dog too, so no one needs to miss out on the fun. Appleby (sleeps ten) Another superb addition to the books, Appleby is a fantastic contemporary new build. The internal finish is as premium as the location in Daymer Bay, just minutes from Polzeath beach. Bright and spacious, with a sunny garden, Appleby offers a great combination of indoor-outdoor living. Beach Hut (sleeps eight) A gorgeous home, perched above the beach at Polzeath, the Beach Hut is ideally situated to make the most of everything the coast has to offer. Chic and stylish inside, with its own balcony, this sleek home is great for families who enjoy splashing about in the surf. Pets are welcome, by arrangement.

We seek advice from the Blue Chip Holidays’ portfolio development team, to help you make the right decision when investing in a holiday home.
T
here are reasons why you’ll only find four and five-star properties in the UK’s finest locations in the Blue Chip Holidays’ portfolio. This high standard is adhered to because the portfolio development team know that thew demand exists for a premium, self-catering experience and owners who meet this demand reap fantastic rewards. So, with this in mind, try to find a property with four and five-star potential, even if there’s some work to be done to get there. The team will guide you on the improvements that will maximise your income projection, and if you’re planning to use your holiday home as your own idyllic retreat, focus on popular features that you will enjoy as well. It’s easy to be recommended the best places to buy a holiday home for letting but location is an important factor for you, too. If you market your property with Blue Chip Holidays you’ll have a generous allocation of ‘owner weeks’ but you’ll also be able to take advantage of the ‘last minute licence’, which is your opportunity to snap up an owner’s stay if your property is available last minute. Therefore, it’s important to pick a prime location that you’ll enjoy visiting so that you can savour every opportunity to enjoy your property. When considering the best places to buy, it’s wise to consider up-and-coming areas
as well as established holiday hotspots. Properties in less long-established holiday let locations are likely to be more affordably priced, giving you a higher return on your investment and greater potential for capital appreciation. While it’s fine to see a holiday home investment as a smart financial move for today, it’s always good to consider how your investment could serve you in the future. Blue Chip Holidays has worked with many property owners who have invested in a holiday property with long-term goals in mind and the team are always impressed by what the owners can achieve. If you dream of relocating in your retirement, investing in a holiday home now can help fund this move. Perhaps you’re investing purely for profit, or searching for an asset that will increase in value? If any of these ring true then Blue Chip Holidays can help and you could soon turn your long-running dream into a very rewarding reality.

ornish wood burner company Anevay has recently undertaken a project with the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) to provide woodburning stoves for 20 bell tents spread over nine YHA sites. The Fintan stoves fit the bill perfectly. CEapproved and DEFRA exempted for burning in smoke-free zones like London, the Fintan is designed to keep small spaces cosy. Inspired by the idea of bringing the outdoors inside, Anevay designed this range of stoves to share the sense of adventure that comes from lighting fires and cooking in the woods with a wider audience. The five stoves in the range do just this. From the lightweight Horizon stove, a portable smokeless rocket stove that you can stow in the boot of the car or take with you on a sailing trip ready to jump out at the nearest beach for a quick dinner, to the Fintan stove, perfect for keeping a garden office or a man cave nice and toasty. Who doesn’t feel a little thrill every time they light a fire, bring it life and cook on it? Many of the Anevay team have been guests of the YHA’s accommodation before while adventuring in the UK, so they were thrilled
to be working with them on this project. Holly Carberry from Anevay says: “We’re all about encouraging people to spend time outdoors; time spent in the woods is time well spent in our book! We love what YHA are doing and were happy to work with them every step of the way to make sure the process was seamless.” Indeed, at the top of Anevay’s mission statement is the idea of encouraging everyone to get outdoors more, whether it’s an afternoon in the back garden or a week in the woods. With this in mind, these stoves are designed to be easy to use for anyone, including kids! Anevay works with lots of forestry schools and outdoor education centres that aim to get kids out in the wild, exploring and taking risks safely. If you are interested in spending a little more time outside then take a look at Avevay’s website as there is a host of outdoor tips along with the full range of fabulous stoves.

On your first easy morning, you’ll wake to a full Cornish breakfast complete with fresh eggs from the smallholding next door, before venturing out to explore the local village, just a short, two-minute walk away. Explore awhile and stop for lunch in one of the astounding restaurants – don’t rule out Ann’s Pasties, purportedly the best in county – before quenching that sea-air thirst with a drop of something Cornish. Set in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and of Special Scientific Interest, Atlantic House Lizard puts guests in prime position to enjoy the best that the Cornish landscape has to offer. Whether you’re a keen ornithologist or simply looking

Peter Bull Resorts’ three holiday parks tick all the boxes when it comes to securing that perfect bolthole by the sea. They offer three beautiful locations on the north coast of Cornwall with excellent facilities and a 12-month season. Each park boasts a range of luxurious holiday homes as well as a dedicated owners’ area, which guarantees you a peaceful setting. Plus, the happy to help team are there to manage sub-letting your holiday home so you don’t have to.

t’s been a long week; work has been tough, the neighbour’s cat has been vocal and all you can think about, as you head into the office on Friday morning, is that you could really use a weekend away. At lunch, you spend five minutes scrolling through incredible Cornish breaks only to find that everything is booked up as people have had the same thought as you, only sooner – oh well, maybe next weekend? Luckily, a trend is appearing that ensures you always have access to that welldeserved weekend retreat. The holiday park industry is experiencing a boom in the ownership of static caravans, holiday homes and lodges, as people seek out a simple, easy and affordable escape from day-to-day life. To meet this rise in demand, holiday homes and holiday parks have elevated their products to provide a level of specification and luxury to suit the most discerning of customers. Owning a holiday home in a beautiful and familiar area with home comforts close at hand can help to reduce stress by offering a quick and easy retreat. The knowledge that you have a space to recharge that’s easily accessible can make

S
ometimes, the best way to enjoy Cornwall is from the comfort of an outstanding hotel in one of Cornwall’s most beautiful and charming harbourside towns. Perfectly positioned overlooking Porthminster Beach, St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa offers a fantastic coastal escape all year round. With spectacular views across the water, the hotel makes the most of one of Cornwall’s most iconic and breathtaking locations, letting you soak up your surroundings in complete style and comfort. From your boutique room you can fall asleep to the sound of lapping waves and wake up to exceptional views – the ultimate start to any day. Drift away into seaside serenity at the hotel’s Harbour Spa as you indulge in a relaxing treatment before unwinding by the pool and gazing out to sea. Of course, you can always indulge a little further and treat yourself to a relaxing message, a luxury facial or a full spa day. For those wanting something a little more exhilarating you can explore the beautiful Cornish coastline from a different perspective and embark on a paddle boarding or sea
kayaking tour. Alternatively, you can discover the world beneath the clear blue waters and enjoy a session of snorkelling – a brilliant way to make the most of the Cornish waters. After a day in the waves it’s time to head back to the hotel and relax on the sun terrace before enjoying the ever-popular ‘fizz and chips’! Indeed, serving fresh, local and seasonal food, The Terrace Bar & Restaurant celebrates the very best of local flavours, suppliers and producers; with menus that reflect the changing moods and climates, fish landed daily at the ancient fishing harbour and a local larder filled with mouth-watering Cornish produce. hen we look at a watch, what do we see? Obviously with any half decent watch we see the time but what about a watch that is more than just a timepiece? Take a Patek Philippe watch for example. When you look down at the carefully crafted face you see hours and hours of dedicated design and craftsmanship. Look closer still and you will see years of gradually perfected designs and innovations and when you look from afar you see a watch of timeless style that is built to last. Indeed, it’s for these, and many more, reasons that Patek Philippe can look back on an uninterrupted legacy of 178 successful years in business, with 2017 seeing several significant anniversaries. These anniversaries have prompted this Genevan manufacturer to craft commemorative watches that recall significant events and offer the perfect opportunity to find an ideal addition to your wrist. In 2017, the Aquanaut collection is celebrating its 20th birthday by presenting the Ref. 5168G in 18K white gold. With a diameter of 42 mm, it introduces a new ‘Jumbo’ size in Patek Philippe’s sports chic segment. The second debut in the Aquanaut range is the exclusive Ref. 5650 in white gold with only a mere 500 limited edition watches endowed with the latest technical advances. Launched over 15 years ago, the Patek Philippe Advanced Research program stands out with two major innovations. The first one is the Spiromax® balance spring with a new geometry. The second innovation relates to flexible mechanisms made of steel, which results in a timezone setting mechanism that reduces the number of parts from 37 to 12. It’s not only thinner but also works without lubrication and wear and in a world first, both innovations are integrated in the Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5650.

Patek Phillipe is also celebrating the 40th anniversary of the world-renowned 240 movement. Introduced in 1977, the ultra-thin, self-winding calibre 240 movement has established itself as one of the mainstays of Patek Philippe’s success. In 2017 the manufacturer presents various models that showcase its versatility with designs that range from skeletonised faces and rose and white gold designs to remarkably graphic dials in ebony black with contrasting finissage. These anniversary editions are a perfect example of the beauty and originality of Patek Philippe and are the ultimate addition to your life and style.

WORDS BY
Dan Warden
We take a look at two very different but equally charming properties from Humberts’ Cornish portfolio.
C
ornwall abounds with stunning property, from those perched on the fringes of the coast to those hidden away in the countryside. But if you’re buying a house, the process can all-too-often be a stressful one. The team at Humberts knows this, aiming to make the process as smooth and stressfree as possible, from the first viewing to receiving the keys. As well as providing a full range of services, Humberts has an impressive portfolio of properties throughout Cornwall, from the fringes of the coast to the heart of the countryside, as well as some great reviews, one of which describes the Humberts service as “refreshingly professional”. A fine example of Humberts’ available properties is The Porthvean. Situated in the popular village of St Agnes just down the road from Porthtowan, this stretch of the north coast is a paradise for anybody who wants to explore Cornwall’s coastline at its most rugged. Surfers flock to the area when the breaks are working and the beach bars in Porthtowan and St Agnes are perfectly situated to make the most of this superb spectator sport. The village also benefits from all the facilities you’ll need, including a doctors, dentist, primary and pre-school, as well as shops, a local butchers, post office, bakery and more. The property represents a fantastic new lifestyle, included in the sale is an adjoining apartment which the current owners use for their own accommodation. The main house, having seven bedrooms (six of which have en suites), has served as a hotel, restaurant and a bed and breakfast and has proved immensely popular in each form, given its incredible location by the coast.

Downstairs, some of the walls have been opened to reveal the original timber frames, which adds a historic element to the more modern ambience and in the sitting room, there’s an open fire and a bar area, which are great for entertaining guests. In the summer, take the party outside to the decked area; enclosed on three sides and acting as a suntrap, this is the perfect spot for firing up the grill over a few drinks. Next we head to the south coast near Mevagissey to find a different property altogether. Situated on the beautiful Roseland peninsula, Lower Meadow Barn offers spacious and comfortable country living, with glorious countryside views to boot. The house enjoys an enviable location, where residents are well set to make the most of country living by the coast, from day trips to St Mawes and tranquil walks along the coast, to bucket and spade days spent on the peninsula’s many sandy beaches. Attractive and with four bedrooms (five if you include the study), this property was converted in 1997 from a barn of nearly 200 years and sits in glorious gardens of just over half an acre. The current owners have updated the
interior, meaning it now offers a very modern style of living, while retaining many of the conversion’s original features, such as the kitchen’s slate flooring and original external wall, and the exposed beams and hardwood flooring of the spacious sitting room. From here, stairs lead up to a large landing, which is ideal as an extra children’s play area, and if you’ve got guests coming to visit, they’ll be pleased to hear that it opens onto a recently added guest bedroom, complete with its own en suite. The clever combination of modern fittings with original features gives Lower Meadow Barn a traditional ‘farmhouse’ feel, while making it comfortable from a modern perspective. So, if you’re a buyer looking for a character property in an idyllic Cornish setting, this one should certainly be on your to-view list.

Hone your camera skills in Cornwall and abroad with Carla Regler’s professional photography workshops.
WORDS BY
DAN WARDEN
W
hether you live in Cornwall or enjoy visiting on a regular basis, there’s one pastime that allows you to capture the beauty of Cornwall with ease: photography. For photographers, Cornwall has become somewhat of a Mecca, with its rolling, hilly landscapes and dazzling coastal views. Wherever you are, there’s plenty to inspire the eyes of anyone with a camera in hand. Porthleven-based photographer, Carla Regler tells us that it’s all about being creative with the camera. Indeed, one look at her website and many portfolios shows that, time and time again, she has proven this. From the raging storms of the Atlantic as they throw themselves, in vain, against the walls of Porthleven to the beautifully still seas at Land’s End towards dusk, Carla’s ability to capture Cornwall in all of its moods is one we could all learn from. And why not? If you have a camera that you wish you could get more out of (I know I have!), Carla offers workshops to those of all abilities who’re looking to hone their skills. The best part is, they’re not just limited to Cornwall, as Carla offers clients the chance
to travel the world with her, capturing everything from the rolling savannahs of Africa to the snowbound reaches of Iceland, each in their own unique light and aweinspiring focus. This year, she’ll also be heading to the Isle of Wight’s Round the Island Boat Race, which she’ll be capturing aboard a private rib. Why not join her and learn a thing or two about capturing the moment – as quickly as it may pass – with what can only be described as professional precision? So, if you think your life through a lens could benefit from Carla’s expert tuition, get in touch. We see lots of photography here at Cornwall Living, but one thing we’ve learned is that anybody can take a picture – it’s in capturing the moment that the skill truly lies.

hey say that waves come in sets of seven, and that the seventh wave is the biggest. So, to test the theory, we thought it was about time to pay a visit to Wave 7 Gallery just outside the hamlet of Trelights, below Port Isaac on the north coast. It’s certainly an apt name for a gallery in this area, a beautiful stretch of coastline beloved of surfers, walkers and simply those who love to watch the barrelling seas. You’ll find the gallery and working studio in a charming converted stone barn, just slightly inland, on the road between Port Isaac and Polzeath, as it forks towards St Minver. Stepping inside, you’re greeted by a fabulously rich array of artworks, from large fluid seascapes of the surrounding coast to handmade ceramics. The gallery is the brainchild of Falmouth Art School graduate, Victoria Mead, who set it up 14 years ago to showcase her own stunning sculptures and mirrors, alongside work of other artists she admires. “We have a wide variety of art; there is always something new to look at,” explains Victoria. “I exhibit lots of local artist as well those from further afield. Paintings range from abstract to more literal works, but we mainly exhibit seascapes and landscapes. You’ll also find ceramics, textiles, jewellery and glass.” Victoria grew up in the area, surrounded by dramatic coastline and a creative family. “Both my parents were potters and they exhibited at Newlyn and in St Ives, so I have grown up around art all my life. I love the people down here and the north coast is so rugged – it’s great for a surf too!” The gallery runs mixed shows, as well as oneperson shows in the granary, all year round. Couple this with the new tea garden next door and ample parking, and it makes the perfect destination, before or after a trip to the beach. If there’s a budding artist inside you that needs coaxing out, why not have a go at one of the many one-to-one and small group workshops held throughout the year, by Victoria and other visiting artists? You can try your hand in a range of media and make friends with likeminded people who share a creative impulse. Check out the Wave 7 website for all the details.

Of course, with the beach right on your doorstep, there’s endless fun to be had: challenge the family to a sandcastle building competition, explore the rockpools or just sit back and enjoy the endless beautiful sights the Cornish coast has to offer. Of course, with Rick Stein behind this amazing getaway, you can be sure your taste buds will be well cared for. Whether you want to enjoy a sit-down family meal at Rick Stein’s Café, tuck into takeaway fish and chips on Padstow harbour or indulge in a picnic from Stein’s Deli, there are plenty of choices when it comes to catering for your little ones. Plus, the £100 dining card means you don’t have to worry about the extra cost of eating out as a family!

Located a short stroll from Padstow harbour, Rick Stein’s Café offers a children’s menu with a variety of mains including fresh fish wraps with tomato and lettuce, sausage with chips and peas and, for the more adventurous children, moules marinière. With tasty puddings like sunken chocolate cake and the fun fruit juice cocktail ‘sandcastles on the beach’ available, your kids will love experiencing new foods and flavours and will leave with a full tummy. Rick Stein’s other Padstow restaurants and foodie shops like Stein’s Fish & Chips, Stein’s Deli and Stein’s Patisserie also provide a delight for the taste buds! Watch your children’s eyes go wide when choosing between the children’s portions of cod bites, goujons and scampi, all served with chips, at Stein’s Fish & Chips. Alternatively, if the sunny day is calling to you and you fancy a picnic, stop off at
Stein’s Deli for some freshly baked bread and pasties and Stein’s Patisserie for a selection of delicious pastries that the whole family will enjoy. The rooms themselves are also something to behold! From interconnecting rooms and a babysitting service to complimentary toiletries, snacks and entertainment for the children, this family break has it covered. And if the family dog fancies a holiday then you will be pleased to know that Rick Stein welcomes dogs in selected rooms. This means the whole family can get together and enjoy all that Cornwall has to offer – this really is an unmissable family experience!

Inspired by nature Proving that nature inspires creativity, we take a peek inside some of Cornwall’s unique design studios.

T
he beauty of the Cornish landscape with its breathtaking vistas and striking coastline has long been the muse for many talented artists. Following in their footsteps, graphic designer Alison Bick and illustrators Jasmine Foster and Natalie Toms are using their own distinctive locations as the perfect backdrop for their creative work. After her children left home, Alison decided to refocus and to sell her own designed homeware, prints and greetings cards from illustrations that were inspired by her life in Cornwall and her love of flowers and nature. To be at the heart of this, she built her ‘shedquarters’ in her garden overlooking the stunning Gannel estuary in Newquay. With a modern, bright and airy feel, Alison’s studio is the perfect space in which to work and be inspired. Having always dreamed of owning her own shop with which to share her art, Jasmine completely fell in love with a quirky little building in Polperro. Once named the smallest shop in England, The Smallest Shop in Kernow now provides the ideal setting for Jasmine’s whimsical paintings. A recent visitor aptly remarked that it looked like a fairy’s workshop, which pretty much epitomises the magic of the location. Keen nature lover Natalie spent many summers marvelling at the tall trees and
little creatures in the fields behind her grandparents’ house. Given the chance to recreate an environment where her work could capture the wonders of nature, Natalie built her own studio, Thickets, in her garden in Lanlivery. Looking out onto a beautiful view of a neighbouring meadow and pockets of woodland, Natalie is able to observe the wildlife that so deeply inspires her illustrations. Not only sharing a passion for creativity, all three artists were also encouraged to start their own businesses after completing a business start-up programme run by Outset Cornwall. This really does highlight the inspirational county we are so lucky to live in, while also reminding people that our passions don’t have to remain a hobby, all we need is a little helping hand!
