Cornwall really does offer something truly unique that you won’t find anywhere else – rugged moorlands, miles upon miles of stunning coastline, fabulous food and fantastic activities and attractions for all the family. If your family loves watersports or beach combing, you’re in luck. Whether surfing, rock pooling, building sand castles, spotting sealife or embarking on scenic boat trips we’re genuinely spoilt for choice. Cornwall is celebrated for its subtropical gardens and varied cycle trails. Of course, we couldn’t possibly list everything. So, to keep it simple, we’ve collated a range of ‘5 of the best’ round-ups (in no particular order), for some ideas at a glance. We’ve also provided some indoor suggestions for those rare moments when the sun doesn’t grace us with its presence. From soft play centres and climbing walls, to museums and galleries, there’s plenty to keep you all entertained – and dry! Eating out with excitable little ones can often be more trouble than it’s worth. But it needn’t be, with our selection of child-friendly, relaxed eateries, many offering fab kiddies’ menus and activities to keep them entertained. So, we hope our handy guide provides some inspiring ideas for your time in Cornwall and that you enjoy this beautiful part of the world as much as us.

Cornwall’s mild climate and uni ue location have allowed its gardeners to create some of the country’s most stunning gardens. We visit a few fa ourites to nd them in full bloom.
1 Trelissick
Why not ditch the car and catch the ferry to the waterside wonderland of Trelissick? It’s not just the boat ride and the garden’s vast acreage of parkland and woodland that will keep the kids enthralled. The Crofters Restaurant has a range of exciting outdoor games including giant Jenga and snakes and ladders, and as well as the eat-in children’s menu, it offers kids’ lunchboxes packed with treats for a picnic. It’s often said that this garden has one of the most wonderful natural settings of any garden in the world sitting on its own peninsula on an unspoilt stretch of the River Fal. www.nationaltrust.org.u
2 Glendurgan
Let the children loose in the magical web of the cherry laurel maze at Glendurgan, then hear them squeal with joy as they get airborne on the ropes of the Giant’s Stride. Stroll hand-in-hand through tunnels of colour to get to the beach, where you can relax whilst keeping a watchful eye on the children as they play, paddle and throw pebbles into the glassy waters of the Helford. Tucked away at the bottom of the valley is the beautiful and peaceful riverside village of urgan, a visit to which in itself is like a step back in time. Today much of the wider landscape can be explored via a variety of deligh ul walks, looking out to open waters through woodlands and wild owers. A truly idyllic sanctuary! www.nationaltrust.org.u

Many of these tender oral gems would stand no chance on the Cornish mainland, less than 30 miles away. Yet even at the winter equinox more than 300 plants will be in ower. Visit the Kids’ Trail around the gardens which take in the maritime history of the alhalla Figurehead collection and some of the the more unusual plant life. www.tresco.co.u
5 TREBAH
With buggy friendly paths, child heaven play areas and special events all year round, this list wouldn’t be complete without Trebah Garden. When you’ve prised little adventurers from the adrenalinefilled Tar an Camp, explore under canopies bursting with exotic blooms, follow vibrant tunnels of colour that cascade down to the private secluded beach on the Helford River and indulge in a spot of traditional poohstick fun on the pretty bridge. Trebah is also famous for its magnolia campbellii or the giant Himalayan ‘pink tulip tree’. At 1ft, this is a Champion Tree and its stunning owers look for all the world like giant china tea cups! Look out for the new amphitheatre which holds fabulous open-air performances in the summer. www.trebahgarden.co.u 2016

Guide to
CRABBING If there’s one thing we love, it’s dangling a line with a bit of bacon tied on it over the side of the quay hoping to catch the biggest crab. If you want to join in, let us guide you through our essential ti s... NORTH COAST: Try Padstow and Port Issac. The harbours here provide plenty of crabbing opportunities. SOUTH COAST: Try Looe or Fowey. Looe has a fabuous millpond that offers a safe family-friendly place to spend an hour or two catching crabs. The extensive harbour walls are usually home to legions of eager crabbers – take care. WEST COAST: Mullion Cove, The i ard. A famous little fishing port dramatically set amongst towering stacks of black rock where edible crab, lobster and crayfish are still landed. The cove has a thick-walled harbour where you can happily dangle your line for hours.
Did you know?
The shore crab, which loves bacon, is an opportunistic scavenger who can grow up to:
3 inches
26
How to do it
Image: courtesy of James Bowden and Jane Sarchet
Find a suitable spot on the harbour wall (be careful now, harbour walls can be dangerous, so take care). Tie your bacon onto your line (crabs love the rind best), tinned sardines or any old fish head you happen to have lying about. rop your line in the water and wait. We said wait! The shore crab, the most common in Cornwall, needs a little coaxing. About five minutes should do it. Raise your line, it should feel a little heavier, and observe. Clustered to your now half eaten bait should be a few happy crabs munching away, or you might need to wait a little longer. If you want to keep your crabs in a bucket for a while to look at, make sure you only put a few in at a time. They don’t like crowds, and make sure you place your bucket in the shade. Crabs are not use to the sun.
After you’ve observed their quirky antics, carefully place them back into the water. They are not edible so please don’t try them on the barbeque, simply let them go back home!
200,000
That ’s the number of eggs produced by a shore crab. She also carries them on her legs until they are ready to hatch!

INTO THE WILD
Into wild the
Famous for its iconic signpost, visitor centre and family a ractions, Land’s End is also an ideal location for wildlife watching. Land’s End sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 00 feet above the Atlantic Ocean upon spectacular granite cliffs, which have been carved out by the waves. ust over a mile out to sea are the rocky islets on which the famous ongships ighthouse stands and on a clear day with low tides, it’s possible to see the Isles of Scilly in the distance and grey seals basking below the famous lighthouse. Below Greeb Farm, a 1 th century farmstead at and’s End, stands the dramatically arched rock formation of Enys odman in fact, a short walk in either direction along the coastal paths will open up fantastic ocean views that have inspired visitors, wildlife enthusiasts and walkers for centuries. The site owners, past and present, have understood the unique capital associated with possessing such a beautiful location. Peter e Savary consulted top naturalist avid Bellamy for his advice on how to conserve and’s End and best protect its glorious fauna and ora. The result was the ‘ and’s End Conservation Report 1 ’. Bellamy meticulously catalogued some 0 species of owering plant, 1 species of lichen, 0 species of birds, 0 species of mammals, and much more besides! The splendid coastal paths at and’s 40
End bring many an amateur explorer or walker to the westernmost point of Cornwall but it’s the stunning diversity of wildlife that keeps budding naturalists and keen photographers coming back. Coastal plants to look out for The wild-plant conservation charity, Plantlife, hails the magnificent cliffs at and’s End as a ‘ ery Important Plant Area’. The geological formation of the cliffs along with the maintenance of and’s End has created an ideal habitat for rare lichens and coastal plants. Heather and bell heather, western gorse and cross-leaved heath are abundant on the and’s End heathland. Rare species such as the perennial centaury and early meadow grass together with the hairy bird’sfoot-trefoil and yellow bartsia have been recorded in the area. isitors in the spring and summer are treated to the spectacular sight of cliffs bursting with colour as gorse, heather, thrift and sea campion ower. Birds and sealife to spot Some fantastic coastal creatures can be seen at and’s End including the fulmar, kittiwake, porpoise, minke

Though, perhaps the most iconic animals to be seen in Cornwall the Cornish chough, the bottlenose dolphin and the basking shark, are all regularly sighted at and’s End. A great place to find out more is the RSPB iscovery Centre just below the and’s End signpost. sing binoculars, powerful telescopes and the finely tuned eyes of the RSPB experts, and’s End visitors have spotted dolphins, seals, black-backed gull, peregrine falcons, choughs and much more. The lovely folk at Cornwall Wildlife Trust gave us the following advice on what to look out for, and where best to look, to see some of the wonderful sealife around our coast. Bottlenose dolphin p to m long, the bottlenose dolphin is one of the largest dolphins seen around the Cornish coast. We have a resident pod of between and 1 animals that are regularly seen close inshore around the coast. And some wildlife helocal lp o ut In January 20
Harbour porpoise The harbour porpoise is smaller than most dolphins at about 1.5m long. These shy mammals are often hard to see as they spend little time at the surface, make little splash, and are rarely acrobatic. They can often be seen in the tidal streams and strong currents around headlands such as north of the Brisons at Cape Cornwall and around and’s End. Grey seals Grey seals are the most visitor friendly of our marine mammals and are as curious in watching us as we are of them. They are often seen bobbing like corks in the water, watching what’s going on, or hauled out on rocks sun-bathing. They can best be seen at island haul out sites at ooe Island Nature Reserve, Saddle Rock, Godrevy Island, the Carracks, ongships Reef, and’s End, Gwennap Island, Mousehole Island and Black Rock in Falmouth Bay. It is important not to disturb these animals, as with any others, when watching them.
14, a family of wi ld rabb its at Land’s End ac cidaentally unco vered a co llection of 8,0 00-year-old flint scrapers and arro wheads wh ilst burrow ing th eir warrens. This incredib le dis co very prompted Land’s End to co mmiss ion a thorough ar chaeological investigation. Th is has revealed that Land’s End sits at the centre of Bro nze Age bu rial mo unds, an Iron Age hil l fo rt, and its st unning co astline may once have be en a key site fo r co llecting flint fo r processing to ols and weapon s. Basking sharks The basking shark is the ultimate gentle giant – growing up to 1 m long and weighing up to tonnes, this is the second largest known shark in the world and a resident of our British waters. Although generally elusive in nature these magnificent creatures are often seen cruising the waters of our Cornish coasts, specifically in the spring and summer months, in search of their food source ooplankton (tiny, microscopic animals oating in the water column). Although usually fairly torpid in behaviour, basking sharks have been known to get agitated and even to breach out in the open water. Good spots to look for basking sharks are headlands such as Gwennap Head, and’s End, or off the i ard. 2016

FINDING CORNISH LEGENDS
Finding Cornish legends They ca ture the imagination, tug at the heartstrings and lea e you mystically ondering the truth but erha s mostly e citingly, Cornwall’s many and aried legends cast a whole new light on well lo ed locations.
King Arthur
NORTH CORNWALL As the legendary birthplace of ing Arthur, Tintagel Castle is the first port of call on the Arthurian trail, but the trail has many twists and turns, and takes followers on a journey through St Nectan’s Glen, Slaughterbridge and onwards to Bodmin Moor. Here the wild and rugged landscape is strewn with tales of Arthur’s adventures and at the mythical Dozmary Pool and the Lady of the Lake.
checklist Learn about Cornish legends and tick off the tasks as you complete them...
ST MICHAEL’S MO NT Whether by boat or by foot the journey in itself to St Michael’s Mount is a mini adventure and waiting for you is a world of fanciful tales bursting with courage and heroics. Upon reaching the Mount you will discover a land once trodden by giants, and one giant in particular named Cormoran. With a growling stomach he would wade ashore and feast upon cows and sheep that he stole from the villagers.
Traverse the bridge at Tintagel
The Mermaid of Zennor
Sit on a giant’s boulder in Portreath
Giant Cormoran
ENNOR The most romantic of Cornish legends. The beautiful mermaid captures the heart of a local chorister. With love as his guide he turns to a life beneath the shore and leaving ennor. As a lasting memento they carve a Mermaid Chair from wood which can still be seen in St Senara’s Church today. isten carefully when you next visit Zennor – it is said that you hear the sound of the lovers singing together.
Feel the giant’s heartbeat at the Mount Read the mermaid’s poem in Zennor
Search for Bolster’s blood in St Agnes
Giant Wrath
PORTREATH In Portreath you can see the remains of boulders. These are said to have been the weapon of choice for a fearsome giant named ‘Ralph the Wrath’. Ralph the Wrath lived in a collapsed sea cave and he had an appetite for sailors. He longed for their treasure and would attack passing ships and fill his cave with the loot. You can visit this cave, which is known locally as Ralph’s Cupboard.
Giant Bolster
ST AGNES The giant, Bolster, lorded over St Agnes, but love was eventually his downfall. In a bid to win over St Agnes, a beautiful local girl, he fell prey to her cunning when he tried to prove his love for her by filling a hole at Chapel Porth with his blood. nbeknown to Bolster, the hole was bottomless and he bled to death. As a sign of this lovelorn tale, a hint of red still lingers on the cliff there.
