Welcome to the April issue of Cornwall Living, again brimming with a whole host of fabulous ideas for the home, unforgettable days out and top foodie destinations. Anyone who has ever visited our coastline will tell you that Cornwall and surfing go hand in hand – surfing has become as much a part of the Cornish identity as pasties and cream teas. Whether you’re a seasoned pro, a novice eager to give it a go, or simply someone who likes to admire the waves from the comfort of dry land, I catch up with four inspiring, and very different, surfers who are based in Cornwall to tempt you in (page 14). Also this month, I have the pleasure of meeting seascape artist Andrew Giddens (page 120), whose love of the surf instead finds its way onto canvas. We’re honoured to hear from double Olympic rowing champion and all-round national treasure, Helen Glover (page 110), on her journey to becoming the world number one in her sport and growing up around Penzance. Foodie is back with lots of great ideas for dining out (page 98), creating the perfect pasty (page 105) and a preview of this year’s Porthleven Food & Music Festival (page 102). It’s almost time for the ever popular Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show, and this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better, with Cornwall’s finest makers and producers descending upon the Royal Cornwall Showground to showcase their wares. We have the scoop, with the official show guide (page 65). As usual, you’ll find an array of stunning properties to buy, gorgeous places to stay, interior design advice, and upcoming art exhibitions. Happy reading!

Money-saving property-sale tips You’ve sold your home, the price is agreed, and then several weeks later you get bad news: the buyers want a price reduction of several thousand pounds owing to repair works mentioned in the survey. What do you do? Kevin Craner, Property Solicitor at Sampson Solicitors, explains. “Rather than concede as many people might there is an overlooked solution: ask to see the survey. It should contain a statement as to what the property is worth in its current state and condition. Frequently, the surveyor will say it is worth the asking price, even though repair works are required. Logically if their own surveyor says it is worth what they agreed to pay, it is difficult to justify a price reduction. Faced with this common-sense fact, buyers often have little option but to drop their request, ensuring you are not left out of pocket!” Smart financial advice such as this can help you save thousands or maximise your profit when it comes to buying or selling your house. It pays to speak to the experts such as Sampson Solicitors. For more information visit www.sampsons-solicitors.co.uk
Don’t let the windy weather get you down Gale force winds and fences don’t get on too well – the recent storms have left more than a few fences in pieces. But with high winds now a gusty fact of life we are just going to have battle on. Unfortunately, rebuilding timber fences is both costly and time-consuming! Based in windy Tintagel, Cornwall Fencing sells and installs storm-proof fencing under the name of Colourfence. Originally devised in Australia, Colourfence panels are made of pre-painted high tensile steel guaranteed to last for at least 25 years while maintaining their colour and functioning as a highly effective barrier – even against winds of 130mph! Not even rust will hinder these fences as they are built with innovative Colourbond steel and coated in an outstanding anti-corrosion technology that heals itself. The time to switch to these fabulous fences is now as the prices are comparable to their timber relatives but with the added benefit of outlasting timber over time. What’s more, you won’t even need to get your shovels out, Olly and his team will carry out the installation for you! With over 200 installations across Cornwall and many viewable from the road, you're never far from a Colourfence. Take a look at the installations map on the Colourfence website for sites near you and sneak a peak! For more information visit www.colourfencecornwall.co.uk
Excitement grows for this year’s Royal Cornwall Show Once again, Cornwall is getting geared up for the Royal Cornwall Show, with a great list of events and shows already in place. The RAF Falcons, for instance, will be dropping into the main ring on all three days, in an impressive display of parachuting prowess, while the Bolddog Lings Motocross Display Team are set to wow onlookers with some two-wheeled, acrobatic feats that you simply won’t believe. Eagles and vultures will soar above the crowd in an impressive bird of prey display, while the grand
parades of prize-winning cattle, sheep, horses and goats will make their annual appearance in the main ring. Be sure not to miss the show jumping and the inter-hunt relay! Taking place between Thursday 8th and Saturday 10th June, with an exciting line up as well as some amazing Cornish food and drink to keep you going, this year’s Royal Cornwall Show is not to be missed. Cornish art goes under the hammer for Cornwall Hospice Care An evening not to be missed with Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care, which is hosting a fundraising art auction at The Exchange in Penzance in May. Some of Cornwall’s most notable and well-respected artists have donated works, including Nicola Bealing, Anthony Frost, Tom Leaper, Paul Lewin, Maggie O’Brien, Tim Shaw RA, Simeon Stafford and Michael Strang. Viewing will be held on Friday 12th May from 10am until 5pm and on Saturday 13th May from 10am until 3pm. The actual event begins on Saturday evening, with doors opening at 7pm with auctioneer David Lay getting underway from 8pm. The £5 entry fee will get you a catalogue, a glass of bubbly, canapés and live music from Café Sax. Registration to bid is during viewing times and before the auction commences, with telephone and commission bidding available. The catalogue will be available from late April at The Exchange and Newlyn galleries.
Come and meet the artists at Customs House Gallery As all of you art-lovers out there will know, there is something otherworldly about stepping into a gallery and being immediately surrounded by works of art, each with its own varying, emotive style. Of course, each piece carries with it the background of hours and hours of hard work by the artist but this can often be forgotten, as the finished product appears so effortless. Luckily, as spring brushes away the chills of winter, Customs House Gallery is holding some ‘Meet the Artist’ sessions. During these sessions each artist will take up residence in the gallery over one or two days to demonstrate their painting, giving you the chance to see these masters at work. While there will be eight artists participating overall; here are three to peek your arty interest: On 5th May watch as Lin Williams turns a blank canvas into spectacular scenery; on 30th and 31st May watch in awe as Heather Howe recreates Cornwall on canvas; and on 13th June marvel at Roger Curtis’ skill with a brush. Whatever form of art you are interested in, it is a truly unmissable experience watching an artist work. For more information visit www.cornwall-art.co.uk

Exciting times ahead for Ales of Scilly Ales of Scilly, which was launched on the stunning Isles of Scilly in 2001, recently welcomed new leadership in the form of Jen Trevithick. Originally from Falmouth, Jen decided to take on the brewery early this year after spending a few months as Mark, the previous owner’s apprentice. “I have to admit, I had never brewed before I met Mark, but now I absolutely love the process – creating something from scratch for people to consume that is so natural and has so much history attached to it makes me proud.” Moving forward, Jen hopes to support many of the upcoming events taking place on the Isles of Scilly, explaining: “There’s a massive drive to use local produce on the islands and I have been approached by a number of event organisers already that want to encourage this as much as possible.” Jen has a background in marketing and so has some very exciting plans for the brewery itself, so be sure to watch this space! We’ve nearly completed an extensive refit to show all of Crown’s latest ranges along with quality appliances, work tops, sinks and taps. We’ve also added a painted oak bedroom plus an office display, which shows just how diverse our range of products really is! “From April, our doors will be fully open, so if you’re looking for a quality new kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or life space furniture, we’re here and always happy to help bring your aspirations to life!” To find out more, call 01326 376788 or visit www.cornishkitchensandbathrooms.co.uk

hether you have been a water baby since birth, you’re looking for something new to take over your life, or it’s something to try on a short break, going surfing, or, more precisely, not going surfing, is like a visit to Cornwall without biting into a pasty or licking an ice cream. It just shouldn’t be allowed! In many coastal towns and harbours you will find young, and not so young, men and women donning wetsuits grabbing their boards and jumping in ‘for a cheeky one’ (surf) during their lunch break and after work. Indeed, many of the companies we talk to here, from Finisterre to Oltco, will head off to the beach for a surf during the working day and make up the time later.
So what is the pull of surfing? We talk to four very different surfers to find out: professional Sam Bleakley, who has been surfing almost since he could walk; model and surfer Corinne Evans, who didn’t start until she was about 15; Tass Swallow, who runs Tassy’s Surf Ratz, coaching girls in St Ives; and ex-Army veteran Martin Pollock, who only took up surfing after loosing both legs and an arm to an IED (improvised explosive device) in Afghanistan.

Surrounded by the sea, with nearly 200 beaches, little wonder surfing is a huge part of life in Cornwall.

ç MAIN Sam Bleakley
Sam Bleakley Don’t be fooled by old-fashioned ideas of surfers. Like many today, Sam is a hard-working family man who, when I meet up with him, is on his way to pick up his finished and bound thesis for his PhD, in geography, travel writing and… surf. “I grew up near Gwenver and went surfing from an early age with my dad. Now I can carry on the tradition by Image courtesy of: Liam Arthur getting my own young children started.” Sam has been an international professional surfer and amongst other things is a travel writer, an Ambassador for Finisterre and a commentator at International Surf events. “I’ll be in Papua New Guinea for the next event… it’s a wonderful job… washed-up old surfers just chewing the fat!” He has travelled to some extraordinary places to make documentaries about emerging surf cultures: places like Mauritania, Sierra Leone and Ghana, and still competes on the British Tour.

He is a longboarder from choice. “It’s more feminine and I love the dance on the board, on the wave. Shortboarding to me is more aggressive, more punk; while longboarding is more like jazz music.” He talks about the opportunities surfing has given him and its spiritual side. “When surfing you are totally engaged in the present and the environment.” He’s written a rather beautiful book about it, Mindfulness and Surfing: Reflections for Saltwater Souls. It’s wonderful even for a non-surfer like me; the last words, and my favourite quote in the book, are from Sam’s daughter Lola: “Dad, I want to surf with you in places I’ve never heard of.”

“I feel connected to nature and the planet”
I meet Martin at the Sand Bar overlooking Praa Sands and his eyes keep wondering to check the waves below. He grew up in Mullion and joined the Army in 2008, was deployed to Afghanistan a year later where he was shot in the leg, but recovered and returned to the front line. Then in 2010 he lost both legs and an arm in an IED explosion. As we drink coffee he quite naturally talks about “when I was blown-up.” Apparently, other vets refer to their ‘being alive day’ as the day they got blown up and survived. But Martin tells me: “My ‘being alive day’ was the first day I surfed. It just felt so right. I don’t think I realised the impact until later, just how much it grabbed me. When I’m surfing I’m happy… it’s peaceful, it’s fun.” In 2012 he got the chance to go to California to learn to surf with Operation Surf, and hasn’t looked back since. Now he has lessons from Dan Joel at Poldhu: “He’s been a big help, helping me and
ç LEFT Martin having fun!
coaching me… And I must mention Van Curaza who runs the surf charity in the States; he’s been my buddy since the beginning.” He grins: “Though his wife does all the work!” Martin spends a lot of his time inspiring other vets to take to the water and surf; he helps Operation Surf in the UK as well as returning every six months or so to the States to surf with them. “There’s a number of things about surfing for me,” Martin explains. “I get real physical benefit and my mental state is better. When I’m in the water I’m freer; it’s easier to move on a surfboard. I am really restricted on land; it’s still an effort on the water but not the same. Surfing has filled a part of me that was missing. I feel connected to nature and the planet. ” For more information about Operation Surf UK www.endeavourfund.co.uk

“I started Tassy’s Surf Ratz five years ago, to help fund the competitive side of my surfing. It started out with just a handful of girls, but within a year I had to start another class for girls under ten! That’s when my real passion for coaching started. It’s not all about surfing; it’s about developing self-confidence and helping girls to have a positive self-image. Surfing has proved to be the most amazing tool for building self-esteem in what is arguably the hardest time in these young girls’ lives.” Now she coaches around 25 girls between the ages of 6-16 years old. In 2015, with a dream of creating a surf clubhouse for her Surf Ratz, Tass took on the challenge of a derelict but iconic building in the heart of St Ives, with the sea on three sides. She launched a successful Crowdfunder campaign to raise the funds and got the lease from the Council. Tass picks up the story: “After two years of more fundraising, planning and plain hard labour we are finally operational and so excited to be on the run up to ë LEFT Tassy surfing

Corinne is equally passionate about getting women into surfing and runs surf lessons, and surf and yoga days. She didn’t really start surfing until she was 15 and joined the local surf club. “There weren’t many other girls surfing, none of my friends did it… but I just loved it, really got bitten by the bug! I enjoyed the free surfing most; I tried a few competitions but didn’t like the pressure.” Now she makes her living from surfing, modelling – she’s an Ambassador for Ann’s Cottage – writing for girls’ surf magazines and running her surf tours. She also manages the fundraising events for the Wave Project, which helps people with mental and physical disabilities get into surfing. “But I still surf as much as I can. I love Fistral, especially in the winter.
“It’s such a funny feeling, the anticipation of not knowing whether you are about to catch the wave of your life or wipeout! There’s no consistency with surfing. You’re out in the wind, rain and sun… it changes every time you go out. The best surf is usually from autumn to spring… so you just have to embrace the cold, windy days and enjoy. It’s the best thing ever and I just want to encourage more women and girls to grab a board and get out there and have some fun!” For more information www.corinnessurftour.com Image: Lizzie Churchill

Traditional look
modern benefits We crave products that are functional yet look stylish too. So why should we expect any different from our windows?
words by:
Annie Cowen
L
et’s be honest, when it comes to our homes we want the best of both worlds. We want beautiful houses overflowing with character and elegance but we don’t want to spend every second of spare time maintaining them – is that so much to ask? Growing up in a Georgian townhouse I watched as my parents spent many a day replacing the iconic timber windows and toiled away countless hours in the search for glass after one simple slip sent panel after panel crashing to the floor. With my own windows needing frequent attention, I’ve often thought there must be a better option out there that the masses have somehow collectively missed. Throughout this research, I discovered two very important things: PVC is where the future stands but it doesn’t have to stand out. With local family-run company Dawes & Windows, you’ll find the perfect combination: the minimal maintenance and thermal and cost efficiency of PVC with the charm and appeal of traditional timber windows. Dawes & Windows achieves this match made in heaven through the use of Resident 9, a window system designed to replicate the 19th-century flush sash timber windows.
What a revelation! This works wonders for the owners of older, traditional properties, providing a genuine solution to their doubleglazing needs and can also be considered for use in conservation areas due to its authentic appearance. Of course, the product is only half the battle. Fortunately, Dawes & Windows, led by Managing Director Phil Dawe, boasts a team of skilled and friendly craftspeople with a truly enviable work ethic. But don’t just take my word for it! Simon and Jo were blown away by the service provided: “Phil Dawe was the ninth person we invited to provide a quote for our replacement windows and we immediately felt that this was someone we could put our trust in.” Indeed, as the team over at Dawes and Windows are celebrating their 10th anniversary, they must be doing everything right, with their expert and affable team of hardworking craftsmen.

Transform your floor
Add a warm welcome to your home with the latest range of Cornish oak, olive ash and Douglas fir, the engineered flooring materials of choice from Aspen and Ash.
A
spen and Ash, with more than 40 years’ experience in exclusive flooring across the UK, produces artisan floors for clients wishing to enhance the beauty of a space with a stunning wooden floor of genuine quality. Company director Peter Randles tells us: “Natural wooden flooring will bring a sense of character to your home, with the appearance improving as time goes by. “Our exquisite flooring can be contrasted against chic ultra modern furnishings or used to complement period features to great effect.” Aspen and Ash has secured close ties to Lord Falmouth’s Tregothnan Estate, enabling the company to procure beautiful oak and olive ash. However, from the forest to the floor, Tregothnan wood is limited. The oak and olive ash is sourced from the sustainable woodlands of the estate, using trees that are felled as part of the natural thinning process. Peter adds: “The wood flooring market is awash with cheap, less sustainable wood from far flung places. We source our wood locally so that we can preserve endangered rainforests and reduce transportation miles, minimising our carbon footprint. “We are committed to recycling and preserving historic, heritage-rich woodland for future generations to enjoy. We know where our wood comes from and we want you to share its journey with us.” Aspen and Ash also offers beautiful Dinesen-style reclaimed Douglas Fir. Peter continues: “We seek out reclaimed timber. Not only does it benefit the environment, reclaimed wood from older structures is sourced from mature trees, giving it hardiness and character. This timber is durable, having already stood the test of time.” The company’s engineered flooring is handmade with precision and passion, using traditional methods to offer unparalleled stability and finish, to produce a floor that will last for generations, adding instant value to your home. So, why not give the team a call?

was recently invited to take a look at the new LooseLay Longboard wood designs at the state-of-the-art Karndean showroom. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to get my interior design fix! Upon arriving at the showroom I was immediately ushered to see the collection as no amounts of talking can really do justice to these fabulous interior additions. The boards, it must be said, really are something to behold. The collection offers a wide selection of sophisticated wood hues to choose from, each inspired by authentic European, American and Australian woods including pine, walnut and spotted gum, to name but a few! Looking at the selection on offer I am struck with each board’s utter uniqueness. The European oaks offer two distinct groups, one of which boasts on-trend grey and charcoal tones for a modern look with authentic knots, lightly brushed grain details and subtle distressed finishes – it is simply stunning. Ideal for traditional and contemporary interiors in particular, the American inspired woods include reclaimed and rustic pines and a contrasting warm walnut design. The detailing in the reclaimed timber replicates both natural open grain and manmade markings for a unique, aged look, whereas character walnut takes on the true colour of real walnut wood. As I browse I begin to mentally design a room around these rich and authentic tones.
Finally, the collection concludes with two Australian designs. Offering a sustainable alternative to real Tasmanian oak sourced from remote lumberyards in South Eastern Australia, bleached Tasmanian oak presents original growth rings and subtle colour variation, but in a modern whitewashed finish. With cool, crisp lines, the subtle spotted appearance and large amounts of sapwood within lemon spotted gum reflects the natural characteristics of this rich, Australian wood. Indeed, it is the concept of beautiful designs and practical execution that makes these floorings so appealing. Designed for quick and easy installation, meaning less disruption for busy homes and lifestyles, and impact in larger areas of the home including hallways, open-plan living spaces and bedrooms. My helpful tour guide tells me: “With colourways and finishes designed to complement emerging trends in home interior design, each new wood design not only replicates the realistic beauty and individuality of its original source, but also remains easy to clean and practical” – a winning combination!

Know your property Get the information you need when buying a new property or upgrading your own with a survey from Court Design.
W
ith spring around the corner, now is a time when many people make plans to look for a new house to live in, or carry out work on their existing home, particularly here in Cornwall. When looking to buy a property (which is a substantial financial investment!), one of the most important considerations is to commission a detailed building condition survey, so that you have a thorough understanding of what repairs or regular maintenance may be necessary to keep your building in good condition. It is all too easy to fall in love with your chosen property and overlook its true condition! We speak with Senior Partner at Court Design and Conservation, Andrew Hayes, who says: “It’s very common for such conditions to be overlooked. Understandably, not many buyers have a true understanding of what they’re looking for when it comes to a property’s state of repair, which is why we do what we do! “The advice we give is all the more important with historic buildings, particularly those that are granted listed building status and it’s important to ensure that the survey is carried out by a
suitably qualified building surveyor, with conservation experience.” Indeed, your existing home may need repairing due to the winter storms, or you may wish to alter and extend the property to suit your changing needs. Court Design & Conservation can help with such design work, obtaining the necessary Local Authority consents and preparing the detailed documents for the builders to work from. Andrew, himself, is a conservation accredited, chartered building surveyor with over 25 years’ experience of working with historic buildings so, if you’re planning a new project or looking to pastures new, but you need a professional to take a look and provide you with all the advice and quotes you need, why not give him a call?

Walking on comfort
Sometimes we want to inject life back into our home, but how do we do it? Well, the answer might just floor you.

L
ife is tough on our poor carpets. Muddy boots run up and down corridors, paws and claws scratch at the bottom step of the staircase and countless cups of tea are spilt on the living room floor after a speedy reach for the last remaining biscuit was a little off target! Indeed, we really do take advantage of our comfy flooring, often letting them lie a little worse for wear for some time. If this is the case then it may well be time to focus on your floor and give it the revamp it needs. Of course, deciding that you need a change is often the easy part; deciding what to go for? Now that is tricky. Walk through your home and spend a moment considering the style you have cultivated in each room and which floor will help enhance it. Does your living room offer a cosy and inviting space with which a plush carpet will add that extra ounce of comfort? Perhaps your classic kitchen could do with a sleek floor to offset the traditional feel and add some zest? Whatever the room, whatever your style, updating the floor can dramatically alter the entire look. With so many questions, it’s useful that Bodmin Flooring Centre has answers to all
these decorative conundrums. David Rose at BFC says he sees this a lot and so is relaxed about how to approach it. Indeed, with over 30 years of experience and often providing bespoke designs for clients, David and his team are certainly equipped to help you through your revamp process with ease. This family-run business supplies carpets, flooring, beds and furniture to suit the most exacting tastes, and is proud to boast the National Trust and English Heritage as customers. David finds that customers appreciate a complete service; with help from the moment they start looking, right the way through to installation. The company therefore offers a huge range of beds, flooring and carpets at its dedicated warehouse in Bodmin. So, even if you are unsure of what you want done, pop down to the Bodmin Flooring Centre warehouse and see what’s on offer and find your flooring inspiration.

pon walking into the office at Oltco, it becomes immediately clear this is no typical flooring business. For a start, just a two-minute stroll from the iconic Fistral beach, it’s not located on some anonymous industrial estate in the middle of nowhere. The office is sharp and contemporary, with AstroTurf on the floor of the breakout area, large wall-mounted screens, and plush designer seating to sink into with a fresh coffee while flicking through a magazine. This is all part of a very intentional desire to create an experience. I’m greeted warmly by Director Johnny Pearce. Johnny’s business partner, Tom Stringer and his parents, started the family business around 12 years ago and Johnny
has witnessed and helped it grow from a small, local firm in Newquay to a marketleading flooring specialist with a national reputation. Oltco is the place to go for beautiful driveways, and for transforming unloved balconies, patios and courtyards into stunning spaces, whether traditional or contemporary. It is also a leading provider of interior flooring, for both domestic and commercial settings. Oltco’s high profile clients include Wembley Stadium, top celebrity chefs and even spiritual leaders. But Johnny’s equally happy helping a local neighbour fix their drive. You could attribute this success to the incredible expertise and skill of the team, to the hardwearing products that are high performance and low maintenance – stunning flooring that does the job, yet looks beautiful too. You could attribute it to the company’s 20-year guarantee on all resin bound flooring – the best on the market and a clear show of the confidence the company has in its offering. But these are all just part of the experience you can expect as standard. Johnny, takes a different outlook. The importance is the ‘why?’ “It’s for the lifestyle we want for ourselves and our team; we want to feel good about the work we do and the decisions we make.” Essentially, it’s all about lifestyle: “Don’t work 100 hours and slog away… work 30 hours and feel contented!” It’s a simple,
Home
but extremely effective approach: If people love what they do and take pride in it, then this will translate into great results. The team at Oltco genuinely want you to get as much enjoyment and pleasure out of your new flooring or driveway as they get from doing a good job. “You can’t benchmark people,” continues Johnny. “We wanted to support the community, and so have implemented the apprenticeship programme. To work for us, they need to learn our ethos… I’d rather hire someone with no skillset, but with the right ethics. After all, we can give them the skills, but they need to have the mentality that fits the business: a genuine person, who likes to have fun – a team player.” It appears to be working: “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime,” says employee, Ben. “Tom and Johnny are fantastic to work for – I see them more as friends than employers.” Corinna adds: “It’s nice to be in a relaxed, comfortable environment. We have great team in the office which keeps it fun.” A born-and-bred Newquay boy, Johnny is an avid supporter of everything Cornish. “We have some very talented people in our county,” he explains. “Cornwall is a real hot-bet of skill and talent. You don’t need to hire a designer or architect based
in London, for example, when everything and everyone you need is right here. And, crucially, they understand the lifestyle too.” So, with lifestyle and work/life balance so crucial to Johnny, one wonders what he does to unwind. “I love early morning running across Fistral beach,” he says, as well as eating out with the family at his favourite restaurant: Paul Harwood’s The Fish House. Johnny’s inherent charisma and passion for his business are truly infectious. For a minute, I almost find myself reaching for my P45 and asking where to sign! I’m left with the distinct impression that this local company has all the skills, products, services and expertise needed to make your home, holiday let or business look as great as it deserves to. So if you would like to breathe a bit of life into a tired looking property, then you really should give the Oltco team a call. Not only can you expect excellent results; they might just make you smile too!

ozen Furniture, the local bespoke furniture makers based in Ruan Minor, near Helston, specialise in creating fi ne, handcrafted furniture and kitchens to suit your home. Having helped clients across the UK to develop ideas, projects and commissions, varying from single one-off pieces to the furnishing of entire properties; from worktops to wardrobes, the team are experts when it comes to creating unique furniture, transforming the homes of clients who return, time and time again. From humble beginnings, Rozen Furniture fi rst started out as a result of the creative partnership of Ian Cox and Alan Pearce, both Cabinet Makers by trade. Having grown quickly, the new company soon required more room to accommodate its ever growing workforce, as well as more workshop space. In 2000, it made its move to Ruan Minor on the Lizard peninsula, a beautiful location that’s helped attract an incredible team of craftsmen and women whose combined efforts have made Rozen the success it is today. And, as if that wasn’t enough, Rozen Furniture recently acquired Botrea Stairs – the bespoke staircase experts – scoring yet another notch on its already impressive belt! Botrea has been a leading name in stair making in Cornwall since 1983, with a fierce reputation for offering competitively priced staircases in hard and soft wood, all within an impressive four to six week lead time! Now, due to the retirement of the original founders, Botrea is set to move under the Rozen banner, with the aim of combining the reputations of each business and achieving an almighty homefurnishing force, reinforcing an ethos of design, quality and service. With an 11,000 square foot factory and a dedicated stair CNC machining centre, there’s nothing Botrea can’t do when it comes to your new staircase. Choose
from oak, ash, black walnut or, indeed, any other timber, including softwood, as well as deciding which steel and glass components you feel would work best. The team will then mock up a CAD drawing for your perusal and approval, before putting the real thing together. The best part about this is that the team constantly strives to continue its approach to customer service, with site visits and technical assistance, promoting a personalised process in a world where ever more people are sourcing staircases and fi tting services online. The team knows that a staircase can very much be a centrepiece of a home. For this reason, they pour all of their efforts into making sure that their exacting standards ooze from each and every inch of the fi nished product. We caught up with Alan Pearce, Director at Rozen Furniture about Botrea, who seemed very excited about the whole thing, explaining: “It’s an exciting challenge. Botrea Stairs is a well-proven company and we’re really keen to further that success moving forward. We here at Rozen offer a bespoke design service to our clients, supporting them on every stage of their project and this is something we really want to infuse into Botrea.” So, watch this space. Things at Rozen Furniture, it would seem, can only get better! Indeed, if you have an interior design project that could use the professional touch of an expert team that knows its trade; a company that’s only set to get bigger and offer more, then get in touch with Rozen Furniture and Botrea Stairs.

The heart of design
With so many properties making up the eclectic mix of residential and commercial properties in Cornwall, sometimes it’s nice to stand out from the crowd.

é MAIN Bespoke contemporary design in prime location at St Mawes ç LEFT Unique external landscape to create leisure space within residential curtilage whilst maintaining privacy

sually, while embarking on my many walks around Cornwall I often find myself pausing to appreciate and lust over the many beautiful and characterful cottages that Cornwall seems to have in abundance. However, on recent strolls I have been pausing less for thatched roofs, lattice windows and names carved with care into slate and more for sleek lines, innovative use of wood and stone and walls with so many windows you begin to wonder if there is a single shadow in the entire house. It wasn’t until I saw an utterly breathtaking house in St Mawes that I finally bit the bullet and decided to learn a little bit more about the fascinating art of architectural design. Enter local company SPS Architectural, the perfect company for gleaning some insight into the processes behind the design, having worked on a wide variety of properties, ranging from residential and commercial to educational and community-led projects. One of the first things that strikes you when delving into the depths of architectural design is the absolute necessity of passion throughout each and every stage. Each bespoke design begins with a sketch and it is clear with each etching that tremendous thought and care has been poured into it. The sketches are a distinctive culmination of the client’s brief and the designer's insight and creativity, which is then worked upon further still as client and designer build upon the base ideas to create something tailored and completely unique. The team over at SPS Architectural pride themselves on this initial process as their forward thinking, design-led work considers all angles and ensures that the client’s requirements, both in budget and design, are met with precision and care. With a team born and bred in Cornwall and with 25 years of experience, their designs boast both contemporary features with traditional influences, so that your bespoke design will fuse effortlessly with its Cornish surroundings while maintaining a striking façade.

Restore your home
We catch up with Jason Smith, Director of the environmentally friendly Eco Clean Tech as the company leads the way in patio and drive cleaning.
T
here’s no feeling quite like returning after a long day to a well-presented home. But getting your property to that state can be tricky without the right tools. Surface specialist, Eco Clean Tech, understands the desire to be house proud while not wanting to spend hours getting your home into this pristine state. That’s why, after selling the product nationally, the team have decided to offer an exclusive cleaning service tailored to Cornwall. With the help of their European partners, they have introduced the TerrazzaMC Brush to the region. Designed in Belgium to clean any external and internal surface, this unique and patented system can restore stone, decking, block paving and countless other surfaces with only a small amount of water and no damaging high pressures or chemicals. Jason has a wealth of experience in helping homeowners to protect their investment by restoring their property back to its former glory. He recalls one client with a lovely house and swimming pool that was surrounded by beautiful sandstone, which had only been laid two years before. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the surroundings, the sandstone had become infected with black spot. Pressure washing started to damage the joints and care had
to be taken when using chemicals as their children often played in and around the pool. And even after several attempts to clean the sandstone with these methods, the problem remained. “When the client first spoke with me she was considering replacing the whole terrace at a considerable expense and inconvenience,” begins Jason. But this would only have been a short-lived solution to the problem due to the surrounding environment. He went on to explain that due to our climate becoming warmer and wetter, black spot, moss, algae, lichen and weeds all flourish outdoors. The solution was simple; use the TerrazzaMC Brush with a little water and sand. It removed the black spot and resulted in one very happy customer, whom now not only has the area around her pool cleaned but also all of the other areas around the property as well. Eco Clean Tech specialise in the removal of moss, algae, lichen, weeds and general dirt, restoring all of your surfaces and giving your outdoor living space the wow factor it was intended for.

Cornwall through the
Looking Glass
With many of us here in Cornwall benefitting from stunning coastal, countryside and garden views, I thought I would explore a new way to make the most of these enviable outside spaces. words by:
Annie Cowen
W
ith the weather getting warmer and spring tempting us to the great outdoors once more, it’s only natural our thoughts should turn to our own outdoor spaces. Whether you have a balcony, rooftop terrace, courtyard or acres of rambling garden, the key is to make the most of what you have. I personally like to view my garden as an extension of my living area; a place to sit, relax and let the world dance by while I enjoy time with my friends and family. It was this last aspect that intrigued me into exploring outdoor options. It seemed such a shame that a garden, in which so many hours are
spent pruning and perfecting, is lost behind an iron railing or other similarly obstructive garden accents. With this in mind, I turned my thoughts to alternative methods and stumbled across the beautiful yet practical glass balustrade. Practical is a key aspect here as while it does indeed add a touch of elegance to the area it also acts as a windbreak, which in the windy county of Cornwall is a benefit like no other! This means you can enjoy your morning coffee outside amongst the sun and scenery without the pages of your latest copy of Cornwall Living flapping with enthusiasm with each gust of salty sea air.

Venturing into the world of glass balustrades, there’s an abundance of choice! From wood to steel to no rail at all, there is a style for every taste, with the clean lines of the glass balustrading complementing any area. But with so much choice on offer, it’s best to consult the experts. The team at Cornwall Glass boast a wealth of experience and knowledge, and are only too happy to help shed some light on your pet project! They begin by offering some interesting things to ponder when first considering a change in railing. Do you want to feel connected to your surroundings,
èRIGHT Add even more space into your garden with the clever use of mirrors
appreciate the wildlife and plants or perhaps you just want to revel in one of the many amazing views that the south west is privy to? Whatever your aim is, it is clear they are devoted to bringing it to fruition by measuring, producing and installing this lovely new addition to your home. If you want to truly make it your space, add a little more privacy by opting for tinted or frosted glass, which also adds an interesting texture and appearance to the balustrade. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, you can add the illusion of more space through the clever use of mirrors. By placing them strategically you can create a door or window where there is none. These mirrors can be artfully framed with your own climbing plants trained to gently follow the frame or decorated with driftwood collected off your local beach for a true Cornish finish! These mirrors can also be used as standalone sculptures or as part of water features. Indeed, the possibilities are endless and can be as varied and individual as you want. While it’s worth noting that the mirror backing will naturally peel over time, this adds a beautifully weathered appearance that only deepens the charm of the mirror. There is just something so appealing about sitting on the patio and gazing out at the scene beyond while the delicate yet sturdy glass balustrade stops the winds from hurrying you indoors.

s I am sure you are familiar with, there is something fundamentally satisfying when looking at a room designed with such attention to detail it gives new meaning to the term voyeur. I don’t know if it’s the seemingly effortless colour palettes that blend together so perfectly, the use of statement pieces of furniture that both draw the eye and tie the room together or the inclusion of just enough sleek style to create beautiful spaces while maintaining that homely feeling we all love.
Take a peek, for example, at the houses meticulously furnished by Kettle of Fowey for Una in St Ives! Walking around the houses, you’ll find it rather difficult to pay attention to your guide; as you absorb every inch of delicately designed space, catching a sense of the incredible work that went into the process. The team have worked hard to create the much sought-after home-fromhome feel, with each room influenced by the seaside but with a delightfully modern twist. They spent a total of three weeks fitting the houses out and, even with over 25 different suppliers being involved, the contract was delivered on time and on budget; a truly commendable achievement! Having supplied everything from knives and forks to fire extinguishers and sofas, Kettle of Fowey has been able to ensure that every interior combines style with practicality. The neutral colour palettes, with warm earthy tones and cool blues, are clearly taken from the iconic Cornish landscape that we hold so close to our hearts. As our guide explains: “We feel lucky to work in such a beautiful place.” A look around the beautiful homes will leave you with a sudden zest for subtle coastal colours and elegant furnishings. One thing is certain: the next time I decide to refresh my home, I’ll contact the friendly team at Kettle of Fowey and make full use of their turn-key interior design service.

We catch up with oak timber frame specialists, Carpenter Oak Cornwall about a recent project at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens.
é ABOVE The new gallery is beautiful, from the outside in
T
he Carpenter Oak Cornwall team know everything there is to know about timber framing and are, undisputedly, experts in their field. Using traditional timber framing techniques alongside sustainably sourced materials such as oak, Douglas fir, larch and glulam, their passion is creating unique, oak framed buildings, in Cornwall and beyond. Testament to their skill is the new gallery at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, a recent and highly successful, collaborative project to build the biggest purpose-built gallery in Cornwall since the Tate! Working with local firm, Norsk Carpentry, the Carpenter Oak team were tasked with creating the frame for the new build, as well as providing specialist input throughout the design process. We spoke to Tom Jubb, who explains: “Following several rounds of concept schemes, we came up with a design that had the potential to provide the required wall and floor space while looking great and being incredibly cost effective to build – never an easy combination!” Managing to stick to a near impossible time schedule and budget, Tom maintained superb attention to detail, maximising the frame’s functionality and scoring maximum eco-points! Once the new frame was in place, Norsk Carpentry, due to their expertise,
sterling reputation and ‘can do’ attitude, were tasked with finishing the project. Dan Pye, owner of Norsk, tells us: “It became immediately clear that we and the Carpenter Oak guys shared not only a love for carpentry and attention to detail, but for a conscientious approach, too. “We also agreed, where possible, on sourcing materials and services from local businesses, as we each understand how important projects like this are to local industry!” The completed gallery is a real masterpiece. Inside, a huge roof lantern, which has been installed to give light to the gallery, gives the exposed oak frame a weightless appearance. In fact, the exposed frame – a masterpiece in its own right – seems to float in the building’s apex, catching the eye of each and every visitor that enters the building. Neil Armstrong, from Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, comments on the finished gallery: “The result is a triumph. As clients, we’re absolutely delighted with what is now a confidently styled, honest building. I believe it’s a building in which everyone can take pride! “The slightly austere exterior belies a spacious, light filled interior that’s perfect for displaying artworks to maximum effect.
56 CORNWALL LIVING CL--58--ED--Carpenter Oak--2.00 v3.indd 2
20/03/2017 12:09
We hope it will make a useful contribution to the cultural life of west Cornwall.” All of the works were completed in good time for the inaugural opening of the Rose Hilton and Friends exhibition, which saw more than 700 people enjoying the new space and works of art as they were displayed between the new oak structure. “The gallery is testament to the hard work of all involved,” concludes Dan Pye, “but also to the level of talent and skill in Cornish businesses.”
So, if you’re looking for a company to manage your project with a passion for its craft as well as a well-thought out, methodical approach, perhaps you should consider Carpenter Oak, whose expertly crafted framing can be enjoyed for generations to come!

ierre Barrie, having grown up in London to love the building industry, is very much his father’s son. His first job was on-site, aged 14, working for his father’s construction company. Since, he’s trained as a carpenter and roofer and even spent four years as a plumber. Eventually, he tells us, “I managed building sites across the capital, dealing with all aspects of residential build and repair.” After years of working in London, Pierre decided it was time for a change. He loved the work, but needed to experience something new, so he put it all on hold and spent the next four years traveling through Mexico. During this time, he made some experiences that would last a lifetime, including feeling a sperm whale’s spray in the Atlantic, being stung in the Valley of the Brave by a white scorpion and almost dying, dancing with the indigenous tribes for ‘Dia del Muerto’, or ‘Day of the Dead’, and helping make pavement art for ‘semana santa’, or ‘holy week’. Safe to say, he got his wish! After all these life-changing experiences, Pierre made his move to Cornwall and started PB Maintenance, preferring the prospect of seagulls over scorpions. Covering a variety of services, from site extensions and garage conversions to roofs, kitchens, decking and driveways, the team has a lot to offer. Made of five professionals, each either family or friends, the team’s expertise covers gas, electrics, carpentry and building. Being in Cornwall, PB Maintenance also specialises in holiday homes, increasing their profitability through specialist designs.
So, if you have a holiday home that could use the touch of a team that knows its trade and a man who survived a scorpion sting, look no further! Ever looking to the future, Pierre speaks of future plans for the business, explaining: “One of my big dreams is to open a retreat centre for meditation retreats, yoga holidays and holidays for autistic young people and their families.” So, watch this space! In the meantime, you can always rely on PB Maintenance for an expert and friendly service, whatever your needs.

All about the ambience Creating the perfect atmosphere and focal point in your home with help from the team at Kernow Fires.
O
ne of the key things that sets humans apart from the rest of the animal kingdom is our ability to create fire. Since our earliest days as humble cave dwellers, fire has brought us much-needed warmth, energy and comfort – the place we congregate at the end of the day to share stories and food around the glowing embers. While our creature comforts have thankfully moved on, fires remain a focal point in many of our homes. The team at
Kernow Fires understand the social and emotional connections well, acknowledging that a fire is more than just a heat source; it is a fundamental part of our being. And today, a fire can be a thing of real beauty too. I catch up with the company’s Managing Director, Simon Breckon, who talks passionately about a fire’s role in creating a home, whether traditional or contemporary. “A fire can really set the tone of the whole room,” explains Simon. “It’s a central point. In some cases, you build the house around it.” It soon becomes apparent just how knowledgeable Simon and his team are, not just about fire and stove installation, but about the bigger picture of house renovation, particularly when it comes to updating older properties, when unforeseen issues can arise as the project unfolds. In one such recent project, the original heavy fireplace was balanced precariously over the guest bedroom and was considered dangerous – it had to be removed completely from the bottom right up to the roof. Using a number of teams, Kernow Fires removed the dangerous chimney, fixed the roof and replaced the chimney with a safe HETAS approved system. As well as completing the installtion, the team took care of finishing and decorating the room. You get a clear sense of the care and respect

that the team show to people’s homes when working there; a passion for doing the job properly, with exacting standards. In another project, the Kernow Fires team created a beautiful bespoke shelving unit either side of the feature fireplace. On both occasions, they worked closely with the client, drawing on their experience to produce something that looks beautiful and performs the task. Every stove installation must perform, but it must be sympathetic and appropriate for the building it lives in, considering that allimportant ambience. “There’s nothing like meeting the customer in the house,” continues Simon. “You learn so much more about their requirements, tastes and personality, which all feed into figuring out the best solution for them – you don’t want to make assumptions that what they need is a black box of a particular wattage.” How do they plan to use it? How will it make them feel? Is it there to give heat, look nice, or do both? These are really important questions to ask the client to establish exactly what they want. “Perhaps create a visual ‘mood board’ on Pinterest or in a scrapbook to build up an idea of your tastes. A fire is an investment – built to last while fads come and go – so we’re keen to make sure we get it right, gently challenging customers (in a positive, constructive way) to
help them make the right choice.” You might want a real statement piece – the key focal point of the room. Conversely, perhaps you need a fire that subtly sits in the background, drawing your eye to the stunning view outside, rather than competing with it. It may even be desirable to reposition the fire to somewhere else more functional, practical or aesthetically pleasing. The Kernow Fires team can advise on all these considerations. The key point to take away is: don’t make the fire an afterthought. Even if it’s the last thing on your list, Simon’s advice, from his own experience, is to speak to the experts as early as possible. Why not pop over to one of the showrooms in Wadebridge and Pool to see the stunning choices and speak to the experts first hand? They can provide ideas and help you with much or as little of the project as required. After all, for Simon and his team, it’s not just about installing a fire; it’s about creating a warm, inviting home that you can’t wait to return to each day.

uke Stone of Cornwall, the small, professional and friendly team based on the Lizard peninsula, is made up of experienced stonemasons, specialising in the design and manufacture of natural stone products for any domestic or commercial setting. The team takes pride in its work, paying meticulous attention to detail and displaying great skill in meeting each customer’s individual requirements, however large or small. In Cornwall, there’s a great demand for work surfaces made of granite and other hardwearing materials. Fortunately, Duke Stone has built a reputation for working with an extensive range of colours and finishes in granite, marble, limestone and quartz, always getting the results you want in a cost effective way. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just worktops that Duke Stone of Cornwall supplies. Recently, the team completed a luxuriously high-end Crema Marfil tile project for a local customer. Duke Stone specially sourced and checked the Crema Marfil marble block in Spain to ensure it was first quality material, before it was manufactured into tiles and shipped direct to Cornwall. The tiles were then fitted
by their experienced tile fitting team. The result is a floor that’s both well polished and premium, oozing quality and seamlessness from every inch. What we love about Duke Stone is the team don’t spread their resources; rather they only ever undertake one tiling project at a time, using a small and very experienced team to ensure that the highest standards are met and a first class service is given. What’s more, the Duke Stone workshop is always ready to respond quickly to the team working on site, producing radius cuts and polished edges, meaning each project is finished with only the finest looking tiles and with no unsightly beading. So, if you’re looking to change the way your floor makes your home feel, or you’d like to upgrade your kitchen with only the finest materials and service, get in touch with the Duke Stone team.

I
t all started for Kernow Springs when Cornwall-based, former boat builder and father of two Martin Dean built a couple of wood-fired hot tubs for his garden after sampling their relaxing delights while on holiday with his family. Working with different wood types has always been second nature to Martin so word spread rapidly of his beautiful backyard creations. Demand then soared to the point where he decided to launch his own company, with Kernow Springs now standing as one of the leading suppliers of wood-fired hot tubs in the south west. These fantastic garden additions aren’t just for personal enjoyment. When installed in your holiday properties they can help add year-round appeal – even in the depths of winter, nothing sounds more tempting than a relaxing dip in the hot tub. But why choose a wood-fired tub? Well, for a start they look simply stunning, complementing the natural ambience of your garden. A tub from Kernow Springs is handcrafted from the finest timbers, while the water is heated by burning wood. No electricity is required at all, which means much lower running costs, no noisy pumps and only minimal water treatment required – 100% natural and 100% sustainable! Indeed, these fabulous tubs caught the eye of popular actress and TV
personality Caroline Quentin, who couldn’t resist their rustic charms. “I love my Kernow Springs hot tub,” beams Caroline. “It’s a joy to use and looks wonderful too. Sitting under the stars, up to my neck in hot water is a wonderful, eco-friendly way to relax.” As well as gracing many homes and holiday cottages across the south west, these beautiful tubs have proved popular in hospitality venues too. The Old Mill House, a wonderful Padstow B&B, decided a wood-fired hot tub would be the perfect addition and soon found that their Valentine’s weekend package sold out in record time! “I would highly recommend Kernow Springs Eco tubs,” says Adam, General Manager. “Not only is it a one-of-akind product but Martin’s knowledge and dedication is exceptional.” So, if you are looking to boost your revenue, year-round interest and eco-image, get in touch with Martin and the team now. Or, to see the tubs in action, you can head down to Travisker Garden Centre in Padstow where several of these wooden beauties are on show. Wild Spa Rentals are now available, too!

Inject some true coastal class into your bathroom with the clever use of tiles. words by:

hether you live by the sea or not, coastal interiors are a firm favourite among homeowners and designers. The reason is simple: this refreshing style reminds us of that carefree holiday atmosphere, of long, lazy days spent alongside sand, sea and surf and of the promise that we have it all on our doorstep. While you can of course create this coastal ambience with any part of your interior, I recently became enthralled with the use of tiles to emulate that much-loved lifestyle by the sea. As tiles come in a range of textures, materials, finishes and colours there really are no limits to what you can achieve. My fascination with tiles started after entering a friend’s bathroom and finding myself instantly transported to my favourite coastal spot! The cool, azure tiles underfoot could well have been the waves themselves, gently lapping against the shore as I paddle along the beach, while the slightly darker, yet no less striking, blue of the tiled walls mirrored the sky so perfectly I was almost waiting for the sun to appear. Indeed, this was a bathroom that had the coast clear in mind. After this oddly inspiring bathroom visit I found myself heading down to The Cornwall Tile Company’s showroom in Newquay in the hopes of finding my own seaside paradise. I
was not disappointed! The range on offer was staggering and a little overwhelming at first. Luckily, there was a friendly team on standby to help me through the throng of brands and styles on offer. After a lot of deliberating I was drawn to the world-renowned, Spanish tile and bathrooms company, Porcelanosa, of which The Cornwall Tile Company are the only stockists in Cornwall; after all, why can’t I combine Cornish beauty with Spanish luxury? Having spent a bit more time talking through my options I realise just how many options I have as it isn't just tiles on offer but a whole range of sanitaryware as well! The team over at The Cornwall Tile Company have experience with private clients, developers, architects and designers and offer a full installation service for those, like myself, who are looking for the complete package. Indeed, with owner Simon Paull himself installing tiles into the highestend homes for over a decade, I know my bathroom to be is in good hands.

Surrounded by some of Britain’s most beautiful beaches and sitting on the awardwinning Perranporth beach, Haven’s Perran Sands Holiday Park is a treat for all ages. words by:

“The friendly and welcoming community at the park is definitely an incentive for returning...”
S
pread across a clifftop landscape of towering sand dunes, there’s an amazing feeling of open space here. When you’re not off exploring all that this fabulous area of Poldark’s Cornwall has to offer, you’ll be rushing to take part in as many of Perran Sand’s on-site facilities and activities as you can. From indoor and outdoor pools to an on-site surf school and private lounge and bar, everyone’s tastes are catered for. On the doorstep, the largest and highest dunes in Cornwall, which cover around 650 hectares, stretch and act as an enticing place for a windy, Cornish romp. Indeed, these types of coastal locations are often teaming with wildlife and Perran Sands is no different. Have fun spotting the skylarks, razorbills, garden tiger moths and the quirkily named scrambled egg lichen! It really is an ideal location for children and dogs alike. Of course, not all of your time needs to be spent outside – as tempting as it is! You’ll be mightily impressed by the accommodation, which boasts all the comforts of home as well as a few extras (I may not own a walk-in wardrobe but it is now most certainly on my
to-do list!). Indeed, all of the amenities in the these luxury homes from home are first class and leave my own home looking thoroughly underwhelming. From docking stations to en-suite bathrooms to fabulous flat screen TVs, you will be short of nothing during your stay. And, with some sleeping up to eight people there is space for the whole family! The chance to own my own holiday home is very tempting, offering the freedom of getting away to your own piece of coast whenever you want – I mean who hasn’t dreamt of just heading off for a weekend at the drop of a hat! The friendly and welcoming community at the park is definitely an incentive for returning, as well as the fantastic entertainment, which helps keep everyone amused for many an evening. If you fancy a fresh-aired holiday amidst sand, surf and comfort then Perran Sands Holiday Park is just the place.

Outside bride
Spend your special day amidst family, friends and an idyllic outdoor atmosphere with Cornish Tipi Weddings.
L
et’s be honest, everybody loves Cornwall. And while people still flock to our sunny shores for the ultimate seaside holiday, people are now flooding to this stunning county to experience a unique wedding destination! Getting married in the great outdoors, often with a festival vibe or boho country feel, is a growing dream with city dwellers who want to create something really different for their day of days. Cornish Tipi Weddings is the top location for the wild at heart with its incredibly pretty woodland, freshwater lake, streams and meadow areas for ceremonies, receptions and camping. It’s a quirky venue set up alongside the 20-year success of Cornish Tipi Holidays. Outdoor wedding venues are becoming increasingly popular and this one is no exception, with a famous soap star – Eastenders in case you’re interested – marrying there a couple of years ago and fashion designers coming on honeymoon to one of the very first outdoor wedding locations in the UK. Add a couple of dozen fully equipped tipis, and the option to bring your own tents or campervans, and you’ve got the perfect mix for an unforgettable
wedding weekend. Two decades of camping experience on this lovely 20-acre site means that the team behind both the wedding and holidays know all about the importance of special time spent with family and friends. Being so close to the coast – only five minutes from the beautiful Port Isaac – they also know all about the swift-changing Cornish weather and always advise wedding guests and campers to come well prepared with everything from sun cream to wellies! Another top tip is to bring your own tipple! The Cornish Tipis team don’t believe in corkage charges; bring all your own drinks and set up a rustic bar with flowers, homemade signs and fairy lights to give a homely feel a world away from the formal bar experience of hotels and caterers. Whether it’s an elopement special just for two – yes, that is one of the packages – or a grand affair for over 200 family and friends, you’ll find it difficult to do better than this venue for romance and Cornish style.

Stay
e m o h m o r Home f Staying in a hotel that feels like home is a luxury we don’t experience enough in our lives. Fortunately, Merchants Manor hired interior designer Helen Hughes to transform a grand hotel into a warm and welcoming home from home.
F
almouth is traditionally a seaside resort, explains Helen. “But because Merchants Manor is set back, perched on the top of the hill and with wonderful grounds, the owners – Nick and Sioned – wanted a stylish, cosy country house hotel with year-round appeal.” With brief in hand, Helen set to work creating a welcoming place to stay with a lived-in feel. “It’s quite a grand house,” she says. “But Nick and Sioned wanted people to feel as if they were coming into a family friend’s home, rather than a hotel. Achieving this meant being quite relaxed about the design; building it through eclectic décor and objects that reflect the evolution of a family home over time.” This brief means that each object chosen is done so with thought and care and hopefully holds with it a history of its own. Indeed, walking through the manor you feel like Alice walking through Wonderland as each decorative piece beckons you over and begs curiosity and inspection. From the coffee table in the library made by a local design student out of various bound copies of Punch magazines to a 19th century, painted horse and from primitive hand-carved bowls from the farms of north eastern Europe to illustrations and artwork by local artists, Merchants Manor evokes multiple feelings of home by showcasing life from different eras. Of course, while each piece is unique and holds within itself its own talking points and interest, the true art comes in the arrangements of the décor. Every room manages to blend these diverse decorations into a striking yet welcoming space that does indeed feel like it has been assembled over years of living rather than through a mere eye for detail and design. Nothing is out of place and yet everything stands out, a combination truly hard to achieve but eternally pleasing to the eye. If you want to spend your getaway in a familiar yet new and absorbing place then a visit to Merchants Manor should definitely be top on your list.

LUNCHTIME AT ST ENODOC IS MORE THAN JUST A MEAL
JUST ADD BUTTER Add a spring to your step with the speciality breads at Vicky’s bread. For spice lovers, there’s the smoked chilli sourdough, available on Mondays. For a savoury feast, try the roasted potato and onion loaf on Fridays. When the weekend finally rolls around, we recommend the punchy, Mediterranean Olive and Thyme bread. All of Vicky’s Breads are hand-moulded and fermented slowly overnight. Wander past their bakery in Helston and you can’t help but be drawn in by the wafts of freshly baked bread, as the loaves roll out of the oven. The best part is, you’ll find stockists all around Cornwall and throughout south Devon, so if you’re around, you can be sure to check the Vicky’s Bread website and find out for yourself why this local bakery is receiving rave reviews!
When you arrive at St Enodoc, you’ll spend just a moment drinking in the stunning views of the Camel estuary, quickly feeling a sense of calm wash over you. Head through the front doors in the hotel you’re instantly greeted with a warm welcome from friendly staff. Depending on when you arrive, there’re various options awaiting you. Relax with an invigorating spa treatment before enjoying a lunch, courtesy of Head Chef James Nathan, who creates a superb range of dishes using fresh and local ingredients and healthy European recipes. Alternatively, take afternoon tea while you take in the fantastic scenery that this wonderful hotel is privy to. While it’s very tempting just to enjoy the sumptuous surroundings, we recommend leaving the hotel, at least for a day, to explore the beautiful walk along the ancient Saints Way, a breathtaking trail through the countryside between Padstow and Fowey.

TUCK INTO SPRING AT THE LEMON ARMS
DELICIOUS SEAFOOD THAT’LL HAVE YOU HOOKED
Spring is now upon us and our farms and fields are once again yielding some of the country’s finest seasonal produce. Nowhere is this more apparent than at the Lemon Arms in Mylor Bridge, where you can enjoy a spring stroll around the creek before popping in for lunch. Now that we’re not completely wrapped in woollies, we’re looking for something a little lighter and the seafood on offer at the Lemon Arms might be just what you’re looking for! And, on those particularly balmy afternoons, you can quench that sea-air thirst with a pint of your favourite from St Austell Brewery. Even as spring looks more like summer, we can expect some rainy days; days when all we want is some proper, wholesome grub. Not to worry, as the weekly Sunday roast is always available to remedy those cloudy, Sunday afternoon blues.
The weather is starting to get warmer and the evenings are drawing out, prompting us to start dining al fresco again. Where better to do so than at Hooked on the Rocks, overlooking Swanpool beach and Falmouth bay? Those who love a long, lazy lunch or dinner will be pleased to hear that Hooked on the Rocks has just launched a new menu which, on top of its much loved classics – Goan curries and seafood sharing platters, to name a couple – includes a variety of tapas dishes, perfect for sharing in the sun. Expect exciting new flavours such as tempura of prawns and squid, ceviche of scallop lime and pickled ginger and goats cheese tortellini. Handpick your own crab and lobster from the tank before you dine or choose from the specials boards, which will be updated regularly with meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, allowing the talented chefs to take full advantage of seasonality and local Cornish produce. For the warmer months, Hooked on the Rocks is now open on Sunday evenings for dinner and drinks, a glorious way to end your weekend. For full opening hours, visit the website and to get a feel for its stunning setting, check out Hooked on the Rocks on Instagram! his year’s Porthleven Food & Music Festival is shaping up to be the best ever with even more going on! So get your party boots on, work up a hunger and a thirst, and join in the festivities by the sea in Porthleven. Last year saw about 30,000 people come to the gorgeous harbour town (we are biased as it’s also home to Cornwall Living) to enjoy three days of food, music, entertainment, and fun. There was even a giant glitter ball! This year the Lime Kiln stage is back, with great music of all kinds, throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Stop a while, grab a drink from the bar and be entertained by
an eclectic mix of local folk, funk, jazz and choirs, all kicking off at 10am on Saturday. And this year sees the addition of a Literature and Acoustic tent: full of words, film and music – food for the mind and soul. There are three nights of ‘After Dark Parties’ in the Shipyard Marquee. Friday night sees the Opening Party with great bands including Rosie Crow to kick it all off, then on Saturday night you can boogie on down to an ‘Under the Sea’ themed party. Expect foot stomping bands and street food on offer; fancy dress is of course encouraged. Sunday night is an alltogether more relaxed affair starting after the ‘Under the Sea’ themed ‘Bake-off’.

BAKING A day in the life of Assistant Head Baker at Vicky’s Bread, Amanda Williams.
C
atching up with Amanda, the 26-year-old assistant head baker at Vicky’s Bread in Helston, it’s clear to see that she’s passionate about what she does. “When I started work at Vicky’s bread, I’d dabbled with making sourdoughs and was really interested in baking in general,” explains Amanda. “I learned everything from scratch at the bakery, from weighing out the ingredients to moulding the dough and baking it.” Amanda explains that, while the bakery works 24 hours a day, her shifts vary a little: “Generally, I arrive around midday and spend the first couple of hours dividing and moulding dough that’s been made by the morning shift. Then I move on to mixing the dough. Almost all our bread is fermented overnight, so we are always working two or three days ahead. “My favourite part is the mixing; it’s incredible how just a few simple ingredients suddenly come together to make this silky mixture – it really is like magic! Having said that, the worst part has got to be cleaning the mixer. Dried bread dough tends to set like cement!” When pressed to tell us what her favourite bread is, Amanda can’t decide. “Each day is slightly different;
on Thursday, we chop olives for Saturday’s olive and thyme bread and three times a week we make rye bread, which I enjoy because it’s so different from all the other breads we make. “I suppose the best smell in the bakery has to be the saffron buns. After all, I am Cornish! I helped to develop the recipe we use and am really proud of it.” On top off all this, Amanda helps run the shop, which tends to get quite busy towards the end of the afternoon, however this is one of her favourite parts of the day: “I love hearing how much our customers love our bread!” We ask Amanda what she does to wind down after such a busy day: “I leave the bakery somewhere around 8pm and the first thing I do when I get home is wash the flour off my face. Then I might make a casserole; I like to cook food that goes well with bread!” It’s truly refreshing to meet somebody with as much passion for their craft as Amanda. Indeed, just hearing her talk about the bread tumbling out the ovens and the smells drifting out onto the street is enough to make my belly growl!

The perfect
PASTY
aving been caught in traffic on the A30, Fiona is refreshingly unperturbed by a frustrating road trip as she steps out of the car. Indeed, she’s immediately keen to get stuck into a conversation about everything, from travelling and flavours around the world to the history and heritage of the pasty. Her enthusiasm is infectious. It’s refreshing to speak to somebody who still cares about the little things – those that make the Cornish pasty special – despite working for a company that’s only getting bigger. The business, which is only 55 strong, is keen to support local businesses. Indeed, while it sells wholesale, the pasties always end up in the ovens of local shops, bakeries and butchers around the country. What’s more, Fiona tells me that Cornish Premier Pasties (CPP) is a board member of the Cornish Pasty Association (CPA), always working hard to protect the status of Cornwall’s dearest foodie tradition. Fiona works closely with the CPA, which is especially important as Cornwall faces uncertainty with the looming of Brexit. CPP, already occupying unit four at St Columb Major Business Park, expanded into unit 5 in 2011. This is where the company
holds its office, bakery and even its own butchery department, to which Fiona accredits the quality beef skirt that goes into all of their pasties. In fact, all of the ingredients that go into CPP’s products are fresh and locally sourced, meaning people all over the country can enjoy a true flavour of Cornwall which, in essence, is this company’s mission. Fiona and her colleague Charlotte explain that many think their pasties are machine crimped. On the contrary: “Our crimpers hand crimp up to 170 pasties an hour! I think the confusion comes from the neatness of our pasties – we use a minimum of 22 crimps, which means a lot of people mistake our crimpers’ skill for machine precision!” I can understand why Fiona is a little taken aback by such a suggestion! After filling me in on the background, Fiona moves onto the World Pasty Championships. For the first three years, she tells me that because CPP supplied Eden with palm oil free pasties, they were unable to enter, which was frustrating to say the least! However, as the company became more involved with the CPA, they made their first entry into both company categories in 2016, scooping silver in both.

“I’m so annoyed, we’ve just had another batch of posters made up celebrating last year’s silver and now we’ve won gold!” This year’s event, which again took place at the Eden Project, saw workshops including children’s crimping classes, raising money for a children’s community charity. “People love to learn how to crimp. If you’ve grown up in Cornwall, it’s likely that it’s been passed down. I don’t know anyone I went to school with, who is Cornish through and through, whose grandma or mum didn’t crimp! “Unfortunately, tickets for these classes always run short, so next year we intend to do more. It’s amazing how many kids really want to give it a go!” This year, Fiona proudly accepted the awards on behalf of CPP for first place in the Open Savoury category – for the sensational Red Thai Chicken Pasty, as well as gold in the Cornish Pasty – Company category. As you might expect, competition is fierce at such a prestigious event, yet I’m told there is a buzz in the air between those who hold the pasty and its Cornish roots close to their hearts. Having won the awards, Fiona tells me: "My fellow board members and I are extremely
proud of our team. Without them, none this would have even been possible!" I ask Fiona what inspired the team to enter the Red Thai Chicken Pasty. “We’ve been doing this one for a number of years – it’s a CPP staple. As people begin to travel more and get a feel for global flavours, they’re more and more interested in new twists on their native dishes. It’s proven really popular with our customers to date, so we thought we’d enter it this year! Last year, our chicken and mango went down well, but we knew we could do better!” As the meeting winds down, Fiona finishes by adding, “Even though we produce many flavours like this, I must say that there is still only one true pasty and that’s a Cornish one!” I couldn’t agree more.

had to pop up to the UpperDeck at Falmouth’s Marina to have a look at the new décor and meet owner Toby and chef Donna. The interior’s stunning: very light and welcoming with off-whites and blues as the main colours. There’s even a wooden boat hanging from the ceiling. But it’s the view out over the marina that draws you into the room, plenty to watch and beautiful light. Donna explains the new menu: “It’s designed around four very distinct foods: steaks, from some award-winning local butchers; seafood, landed locally; stonebaked pizzas and vegetarian. We want to cater for the whole family, all the guests in a group, and this way there is something for everyone. Then for something different we have our specials board, which might feature Thai food alongside a classic like ‘liver and bacon’. Both are really popular with our regulars!” I ask Donna about the Thai dishes. “We do other influences as well, Caribbean maybe… but I really love Thai food, those wonderful Thai flavours and the freshness of the food, it’s a stand-out and very popular. I just love cooking with spices, couldn’t cook without them really. Oh and butter, definitely need butter. It’s all about using unprocessed ingredients. Everything we serve is made here; from the pizza dough to the ice cream… we get loads of comments about our delicious ice creams. The only thing ready made is Baker Tom’s bread; nothing processed in that either!”
Their Sunday lunches are as gluten free as they can be, with gluten-free gravy, cauliflower and broccoli in white sauce, and Donna has devised a dairy-free ice cream, so, whatever the dietary needs of your party, they’ll all find plenty to choose from at UpperDeck. And what's more, there is always lots going on outside in the marina to keep the conversation flowing.

Interview
National treasure We catch up with the European, world and double Olympic rowing champion, Helen Glover, to discuss growing up around Penzance, her love of pasties, and what it takes to be number one.
A

comprehensive list of the accolades bestowed upon Helen Glover would need an entire magazine devoted to it. So here are just a few highlights: the world number one ranking in her sport, multiple record breaker, two Olympic gold medals, threetime world champion, and MBE (for services to sport, personally awarded by the Queen in Windsor, no less). And, like the Queen, Helen has also featured on a postage stamp; she has even had a new hybrid of fuchsia named after her. It’s fair to say she has officially reached national treasure status. Of course, it’s oodles of talent, hard work and determination that have got her here, but to those who know her well, she’s simply the inspirational girl from Penzance who dared to dream big.
Hailing from a sporting family, Helen, along with her rowing partner Heather Stanning, broke an Olympic record when they won gold at their first Olympic games in London 2012 – the first gold for Team GB at the games. (If you’ve visited Penzance in recent years, you may have noticed a gold post box outside the Dock Inn on Quay Street commemorating the occasion.) Since that historic day, the duo remain unbeaten, going on to break countless records and rack up more silverware, culminating in another Olympic gold at Rio 2016 last summer. The pair have well and truly put British women’s rowing on the map, inspiring the next generation of aspiring athletes. Recently married to TV voyager Steve Bracknell – in a fairy tale wedding at the appropriately named Pisky Cove, near

with the intention of trying to get to the London games and win gold within four years.” This she achieved, marking the start of a meteoric rise to be ranked the world number one female rower, a milestone that still bewilders Helen today. “It’s really special,” she says. “In training you put everything you can into being the best so when that is recognised it feels great.”

Marazion – we catch up with Helen, as she enjoys some well-deserved time off, to discuss an enchanting childhood exploring west Cornwall, her achievements to date and future plans. Helen recalls growing up in and around Penzance. “I loved it,” she says. “My dad has an ice cream shop, Jelberts in Newlyn, and our childhood was spent eating ice cream, pasties, seafood and clotted cream (not all together!) and just exploring the beaches and countryside. We would take long family clifftop walks, no matter what the weather!” Fondest memories? “Probably days at Gwithian sand dunes. We would take a big picnic and have sledge races down the dunes. When I was older these dunes were my favourite place for running.
With two Olympic golds under her belt, it begs the question which experience Helen cherishes the most – London 2012 or Rio 2016. “I enjoyed them equally and for very different reasons. In London the ‘home games’ feeling was huge and so exciting. Heather and I won the first GB gold of the games and the whole Olympics was almost bigger than we could even prepare for. The satisfaction of winning my first Olympic gold was huge, but took a long time to sink in. I found it very hard to call myself an Olympic champion, as the whole

“I try to get home as much as possible, though with training that has been difficult over the last eight years. I love to visit Mousehole, Sennen, and the Minack Theatre.” It might surprise some to learn that, despite Cornwall’s unique pilot gig rowing heritage, Helen got into rowing at a relatively late stage, having excelled at other sports including hockey, tennis and athletics in her youth. In fact, she notes, “I didn’t try gig rowing until after the London Olympics (and I loved it!). I was in a talent identification programme four years before the London Olympics and started rowing as I was spotted as having potential in the sport. I picked up the sport

thing had been such a whirlwind. In Rio we were prepared for what a games feels like but the pressure was on us so much more. After staying unbeaten since the London Olympics we had a lot to lose and a huge amount of expectation on us. The grit that got us through those four years made the Rio win feel very sweet. And unlike the London Olympics the satisfaction was immediate as soon as we crossed the line.” What was it like being awarded an MBE from the Queen? “It was unexpected and very special. I would always say there are so many people more worthy than me: teachers, nurses, soldiers... I feel so lucky to do what I do that I don’t need an award. However to get recognised, and to be told that what I’ve achieved has made a difference and inspired others, is amazing.” Yet despite having accomplished so much, Helen has no plans to stop anytime soon, with plenty of items to tick off the bucket list. “My first step is to run the London Marathon and set some physical challenges for myself, whether I return to rowing for another Olympics or not. I have so many places I want to see and challenges I want to do, and I feel I can use my physical training to go on some great adventures one day!” Helen offers her tips to those with dreams to follow. “I think that no matter what your goal is, surround yourself with good people and go for it! Support network is crucial, from the
obvious people we see every day, be it coaches or colleagues, to friends and spouses and siblings. An unconditional and patient support network is crucial for achieving a goal.” But life is not all training and competing, with no time for fun, as Helen explains. “I love the outdoors so whenever I can I will kayak, climb or paddle board. When in full time training and too tired, this often leads to my husband Steve just paddling me around in our canoe!” And having decided to take a year out from formal training, this year will see more time devoted to more leisurely – yet no less active – pursuits. “I spent new year in Australia with my husband as he was working there for a month. This got 2017 off to a great start with diving, cycling, trekking and canoeing! Hopefully there’ll be more of the same for the rest of the year, plus running the marathon and finding more adventures!” One thing is certain, whatever Helen turns her hand to next, you can be sure that she’ll be making waves.

“As soon as I was able to catch my first wave, I was hooked and wanted to document it through photography”
When did you first realise you wanted to pursue surf photography? “Growing up in Windermere meant that I’ve always loved being in the water, but the lakes just didn’t quite cut it in the wave department, so as soon as I could drive, it became my mission to make it to Cornwall and its amazing surf. As soon as I was able to catch my first wave, I was hooked and wanted to document it through photography, although at the time I couldn’t afford a waterproof camera housing. Seven years ago, I finally bought one and as soon as I started taking photos from inside the waves, I knew this was the right path in photography for me.” So it’s only a recent decision, in the grand scheme of things? “Looking back, I like to think that my all day surf sessions, where I’d get out the water to rush some food before getting straight back in until sunset – making the most of every minute of a great swell – were all just training for a career in wave photography.”
You clearly love being in the water! What do you love most about taking a camera into the break? “I love the unpredictable nature of the conditions in Cornwall, from cold, stormy seas to warm and sunny, golden sessions. For me, being out there taking the photos is like being there surfing – every surfer knows that feeling of being deep in the moment, where you don’t think about anything else apart from the waves. “In my case, I’m thinking about getting in the right position to capture that magical moment. It’s the most amazing feeling to be reacting to the conditions around you instinctively; nothing beats holding your position and waiting for that huge wave as it grows bigger and gets ever closer, trusting your instincts to get into that perfect spot and be completely engulfed! “I’ll be chasing the swells around Cornwall for as long as I can!”

ust a stone’s throw from the sea in the historic market town or Marazion, Summerhouse Gallery is a beautiful and welcoming space, always striving to showcase the best of Cornish art. With a variety of paintings, bespoke jewellery, sculptures and glass from a wonderful range of artists – from the well established to the up and coming – it’s definitely worth popping your head in, especially if you’re out and about exploring this wonderful part of Mount’s Bay, or about to walk the low-tide path to St Michael’s Mount. This spring, the Summerhouse team invite you to join them in celebration of what is one of the most beautiful seasons. The first show of 2017 will see work from featured artists Imogen Bone and Iona Sanders, alongside a variety of well loved and known Summerhouse artists. Using flashes of fresh green against bold yellow flower buds, Imogen captures the environment at its most beautiful. Indeed, her work is as much a celebration of our surroundings as a call to stop and appreciate them. Imogen has rapidly become viewed as one of the most exciting talents to come out of Cornwall in recent years and The Summerhouse is delighted
to have her on board as the lead artist for its opening show! Iona Sanders, also using bold bursts of colour from fruit and flowers, makes them pop from muted backgrounds, making hers an instantly recognisable body of work, with an important focus on narrative. Iona is a rising star whose work has received critical acclaim in London and throughout the south west. The Summerhouse is also delighted to welcome renowned sculptor Tom Leaper to the family. Tom’s incredible sculptures will be introduced to the gallery within the show, so keep an eye out! With plenty going on in the spring, including a stunningly emotive onewoman show called Where Have all the Songbirds Gone; visually captivating work from Maggie O’Brien and more, the Summerhouse spring line up is not to be missed!

was lucky enough to meet artist Andrew Giddens at his studio and gallery in Perranuthnoe. The space is bright, light and airy. The walls are covered with his paintings with their brilliant white spray and splashes of sunlight on sparkling blue water adding to the lightness of the room. There’s an old draughtsman’s chest against the wall, squashy chair and sofa, an easel with large canvas on it, which is painted all over in a deep red, tubes of paints and a paint splattered leather Parker Knoll type chair that Andrew tells me he’s had for over ten years and often sits in when painting. I think that, just maybe, even I could paint in this space. And… there’s a really good coffee machine tucked in the corner, so I accept his opening offer of coffee, and we chat easily.
Apart from his obvious skill as an artist it becomes clear quite quickly that Andrew is a man of deep belief and, although he doesn’t eschew to any particular Christian faith – indeed he dislikes organised religion, he does talk about Jesus and his relationship with Him quite easily and candidly. “I went off the rails quite a bit when I was younger and got kicked out of school, I went to college in Bournemouth and Falmouth to study art but got in with the wrong people… you can imagine the rest!” He grins rather sheepishly. It was then that he had the epiphany that changed his life and got him back on the straight and narrow. And, even for an old cynic like me, it is clear to see the celebration of life and the natural world in his paintings… it positively jumps off the canvas.

He now lives in Praa Sands with his wife Marie and their four children. “I feel so blessed to live next to one of Cornwall’s most stunning beaches at Praa. It’s really inspiring to wake up to the sounds of the waves breaking on the shore a few hundred yards from our home and being able to walk across the sand as the sun rises each morning. I have a short walk up the cliff to the studio and as I work the tide sneaks in and then out again as I get totally caught up in the act of painting.” He picks up canvases to show me as we talk, explaining more about them. He works from memory, though may take the odd photo with his phone. Holding up my favourite he tells me: “This is a painting of the beautiful beach at Perran Sands. I painted it after a particularly good time on the beach with my youngest boy. It’s as much a painting of the beach as the memories that were created that day. It’s people who make places special and I paint special places… and the light!”
The painting is joyous: blue seas and that brilliant white as the sun hits the water: just stunning. It was whilst he was working behind the bar at the Shipwrights in Helford Village, that he hung one of his paintings on the wall of the pub and it was bought by regular Sir Tim Rice, who still collects his work. Then he had an exhibition at Out of the Blue in Marazion that sold out. He decided it was time to take the plunge and concentrate full-time on his painting. And the rest, as they say, is history. His art is now collected all over the world. And… he loves that, with his own gallery to work in, he gets to meet some of the people who buy his work. “I love seeing the personal reaction to my work. A painting is part of you, an overflow of you, so to get that immediate, heartfelt reaction is wonderful.”

Health
True or false?
With almost 40% of UK adults having varicose veins at some point in their lives, Mr Ken Woodburn, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Duchy Hospital, takes us through the myths behind them. é ABOVE Mr Ken Woodburn, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Duchy Hospital
I
f you suspect you have varicose veins, it’s essential you see a doctor. The good news is that there are many treatments available, some of which don’t require surgery. What’s more, some of the myths we accept as everyday truths aren’t, actually, quite as they seem!
Myth #1 Varicose veins aren’t harmful
Free open events
If you’d like to find out more, why not book a place at one of the regular free open events at Duchy Hospital? You’ll have a chance to hear from one of Duchy Hospital’s vascular surgeons and get any questions you may have answered.
Prices
You may also find it more affordable than you might imagine. Duchy Hospital offers Endorthermal Ablation from £1970 and there is also interest-free finance available, should you wish to spread the cost.
While usually just unsightly, in some cases they can be harmful, causing aching, throbbing and itching, in some cases, swelling. Over time, they may even lead to skin changes and leg ulcers and occasionally blood clots.
Myth #2 Varicose veins are the same as spider veins Spider veins are veins that have dilated. They are found in the surface of the skin and are largely a cosmetic issue. Varicose veins are located in the fat between the skin and muscle.
Myth #3 Varicose veins can always be easily seen Many people think that they’re always visible. This isn’t the case, as sometimes, they can be found deeper under the skin, out of sight. You’ll know if you’re suffering from deeper varicose veins because they present the same symptoms of swelling, achy tired legs and itchiness.
Myth #4 There’s no point in operating as they always come back With the old method of treatment, this was largely true. However, research has shown that when treated using new methods such as Endothermal Ablation, the veins are less likely to reappear in most patients. And, while new varicose veins can develop, it’s usually possible to treat them with one of the new keyhole techniques.
Myth #5 Women get varicose veins more than men This isn’t strictly true. Women are more likely to do something about varicose veins and therefore represent a higher proportion of patients. Research shows that they occur roughly in the same proportions in both men and women, but that men are more likely to ignore them.
Myth #6 Varicose veins run in families This one is actually true. There is a strong familial link and the more relatives you have with varicose veins, the more likely you are to have them. The link cannot be termed as solely genetic, as patients often only have them on one leg and not the other.

Good news for unmarried couples
A recent Supreme Court case looks likely to improve the standing of unmarried couples, as Stephens Scown’s Davina Haydon explains.
A
“There is no doubt that, historically, the law has been out of step with society and has been unfair to unmarried couples”
landmark legal ruling could have a significant impact on how public sector pensions are distributed to unmarried couples if one partner dies. A Cornish lawyer who is an expert in inheritance disputes has welcomed the news of the Supreme Court case. Davina Haydon, partner in the inheritance and trusts disputes team at Stephens Scown LLP in St Austell says: “Losing a loved one is difficult enough, without having to face additional financial strain. But this is exactly what has been endured by countless unmarried couples, who have not had the legal rights available to married couples.” However, a Supreme Court case looks set to change how public sector pension schemes are shared with unmarried partners after the death of his or her partner. The case involves Denise Brewster from Northern Ireland. Lenny McMullan, her partner of ten years, proposed on Christmas Eve 2009, then tragically died just two days later. He had paid into an occupational pension scheme for 15 years, yet Ms Brewster was denied access to his pension because he had not filled out a nomination form specifically naming her. However, if they had been married, she would have
é ABOVE Davina Haydon, partner in the inheritance and trusts disputes team at Stephens Scown
been entitled to a significant financial recompense. After a lengthy legal battle, the Supreme Court ruled in February that the requirement for unmarried couples to have to fill out a pension nomination form, which married people did not have to fill out, amounted to unfair discrimination. Davina adds, “This ruling makes clear that public sector occupational pension schemes are no longer entitled to deny a payment to an unmarried partner simply because the employee had not filled out the relevant form. This will certainly open the door for an unmarried partner to have greater rights upon the death of a loved one, but potentially only in certain circumstances. “There is no doubt that, historically, the law has been out of step with society and has been unfair to unmarried couples. Anything that will start to address that is to be welcomed. Pension providers have been watching this case with interest, and it will be important to see how they react.”

We catch up with fashion retailer, Ann’s Cottage, the one stop shop for all your fashion needs. words by:
Dan Warden
ith 11 stores across Cornwall, Ann’s Cottage is one of Europe’s largest retailers of surf and lifestyle clothing, as well as surf equipment ranging from wetsuits to boards and accessories. The best part is, the store’s famous loyalty card programme allows you to turn points into pounds, which can be spent either online or in any of the stores, including the clearance store in St Columb! Being part of such a fast-paced industry, the Ann’s Cottage team keep their fingers on the pulse when it comes to current trends and knowing what’s hot and what’s not. Take the annual and highly anticipated festival season, for instance. This, in many people’s eyes, is the launch of summer. Not
only this; we tend to look to our celebrity idols for the season’s latest fashion trends and with the likes of Coachella kicking off the year’s festival scene, many people, including celebrities, travel from all over the world just for this incredible festival at Indio, California. Known as America’s largest festival, showcasing the most popular and established artists, festival goers have the added pressure of wearing the latest clothing and accessories. Indeed, many of us look to the stars to inspire our own wardrobes and the Ann’s Cottage team appreciate this, especially with Cornish festivals such as Boardmasters and Tunes in the Dunes drawing fashion-minded revellers from all over the world. Tie-dye, for instance, has really come back

on trend recently and, although it has for many years been somewhat clichéd – ever since its peak popularity in the 60s and 70s – some more sophisticated forms are beginning to appear in the world of fashion. Anyone keeping an eye on key fashion sites such as Vogue will know that these emergent forms have become a really popular look, especially at busy, summer festivals where it’s tough to stand out from the crowd. Look at the Rip Curl Pacha Crew, for instance. Wonderfully showcased below on the left, these jumpers are light and cool during the balmy evenings of summer and they really make a statement, too! You’ll find them at Ann’s Cottage, along with a whole range of tiedye clothing, from board shorts and t-shirts, to bikinis. And, in a world where men are
beginning to spend more time on what they wear, such trends appeal to everybody! Another dyeing technique that the team has spotted is shibori. The elaborate, striking patterns of shibori clothing are real head turners and again, they never fail to speak up in a fashion world filled with noise. Once enjoyed by the Japanese elite, this revived technique has started to make waves in the world of fashion and one of the most exciting things about it is that no shibori garment is the same. Head to the website and check out the shibori collection from Seafolly – it’s absolutely stunning! While these trends are bound to change and evolve, you can count on the Ann’s Cottage team to help you choose the look that best suits you. Choose from a massive selection of top surf and bong Image courtesy of: Billa lifestyle brands, including – but certainly not limited to – Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver, Seafolly and Roxy. And it doesn’t stop at clothing – they’re experts in the world of surfing, too, so whether it’s a new wetsuit for the summer or a shorter board for the ever-improving surfers in your clan, they can help guide you through every step of your shop, matching your needs and, more importantly, your budget. To see for yourself, visit the Ann’s Cottage website or, better still, head in store! Image courte s

Advice
How will you spend yours? Since 6th April 2015, anyone aged 55 or over has been able to take their entire defined contribution pension fund however they want...
T
his decision has allowed most pension plan-holders to draw down as much, or as little of their pension, at any time. Effectively, we are now free to shop around and devise a multitude of product combinations – even taking it all as cash! However, whilst retirement freedom creates more choice, it can also bring with it more risk... And it’s not just pension plan-holders coming up to retirement who are considering this issue. It will also impact upon those of us in the workplace who are looking to build up our pension pot (or thinking about taking one out), who now recognise that the new government rules may require a change in our pension planning. On average men retire at 64 years and 6 months and women at 63.8, according to the report Retirement Income Uncovered by Old Mutual Wealth. At these ages men can expect to live until 86.3 and women until 86.9. Being retired for 21 years or more means planning for an income that funds retirement for this length of time. Don’t pay any more tax than you have to... The first 25% of your pension pot will be taxfree either as one lump sum or as the first 25% of multiple lump sums. Here are some of the key options arising from the Pension Freedoms:
1. Uncrystallised funds pension lump sum These funds are ‘uncrystallised’, as they have not yet been used to pay a scheme pension, buy an annuity, or designated to a flexi-access drawdown fund. As it stands, your pension pot would remain as currently invested, or can be taken partly, or all, as cash.
2. Annuities Historically, three-quarters of the 320,000 or so people that retire each year opted for an annuity, which offers a regular guaranteed income.
And, for many, this certainty of payment may mean that it’s still the best option. (Source: HM Treasury, March 2014)
3. Flexi-access drawdown At the other end of the scale are ‘drawdown products’, which could potentially offer a better return but do come with a higher degree of risk, as you’ll still be investing in the stock markets, and so on.
ê BELOW Matt Begley, retirement planning expert at Harris Begley Financial Planning
4. Blended solutions The likelihood, for many, is that they may opt for a mix of immediate cash, annuity and flexiaccess drawdown – thereby meeting current needs, delivering a guaranteed income for life, yet also leaving some funds invested in the hope of future growth. Making the right decisions for your future can seem a daunting prospect and it’s essential that you take expert advice. Harris Begley take pride in offering a personal service that takes your individual circumstances into account. Get in touch for a free, no-obligation consultation to discuss your pension and plan for your future. The value of pensions and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

Retelling the Biblical story of Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours, this magical musical is full of unforgettable songs. Joe McElderry was just 18 when he won the sixth series of The X Factor in 2009. He has since had three top ten albums, as well as notching up two more reality TV show victories, winning ITV’s Pop Star to Opera Star and Channel 4’s The Jump.
The Endellion String Quartet with Guy Johnston Cello Friday 26th May The Endellion String Quartet is renowned as one of the finest quartets in the world. They have appeared at nearly all of the major series and festivals, have featured at the Proms and frequently appear on BBC radio and television. Joining them will be cellist Guy Johnston to perform a masterpiece of the string repertoire, the great Schubert C Major Quintet.
Birmingham Royal Ballet
Friday 12th and Saturday 13th May Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to Truro with a sparkling triple bill. In the beautiful Wink, Jessica Lang captures the poetry of five Shakespearean Sonnets. Finally, in Arcadia, the ancient god Pan is unleashed as Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Ruth Brill makes her first commissioned piece to a new score, composed by renowned saxophonist John Harle. Accompanied by the acclaimed Royal Ballet Sinfonia, Birmingham Royal Ballet present unforgettable performances of dance and drama.

Leo Sayer: Live in Concert
Thursday 25th May Following the success of his 2015 Restless Years tour, Grammy award-winning and international chart-topper Leo Sayer is returning to the UK for another series of concerts. Out of Order
Tuesday 2nd to Saturday 6th May Ray Cooney’s Olivier Award-winning comedy Out of Order returns to the stage in a gleeful new production. When Richard Willey (Andrew Hill), a Government Junior Minister, plans to spend the evening with Jane Worthington (Susie Amy), one of the Opposition’s typists, in the Westminster Hotel, things go disastrously wrong – beginning with the discovery of a body trapped in a window. Things go from bad to worse with the arrival of Jane’s distraught young husband. Add an unscrupulous waiter, a frustrated hotel manager, Mrs Willey and Nurse Foster and things really do come to a head!
BalletBoyz: Life
Tuesday 23rd May Following its triumphant premiere in London, Life is performed by an all-male company of ten amazing dancers and features two works by internationally acclaimed choreographers: Rabbit by Pontus Lidberg and Fiction by Javier Frutos. Life takes an elegant, powerful and provocative look at life and death, presented in the inimitable BalleyBoyz style. BalletBoyz have generated thousands of fanatical dance fans across the globe with their inventive, vivid and memorable shows.
The Manfreds: Makin’ Tracks Tour 2017 Kernow King is Trevithick! Featuring The Oggymen
Tuesday 9th May Born in Cornwall, Richard Trevithick revolutionised the use of steam as a successful and profitable means of energy. It was Trevithick’s passion and genius that led to steam power being put on rails and roads. Trevithick! is bursting with music, comedy and facts and is still relevant to the world we live in today. This is the gripping story of, not just one of Cornwall’s greatest sons, but one of the greatest men in history, steeped in accolade and loved by many but whose life was tinged with tragedy.
Wednesday 31st May Manfred Mann is considered one of the finest and most respected bands from the 60s. Their numerous hits were an unusual yet winning combination of R&B with an undercurrent of Jazz. The Manfreds, with original front man, Paul Jones, will be performing many of their hits, including Do Wah Diddy Diddy, one of the most instantly recognisable songs of the 60s, along with a mix of jazz and blues covers from their new album.

English Touring Opera: Tosca and Patience
Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th May English Touring Opera return to Hall for Cornwall with two stunning new productions. Puccini’s Tosca (Monday 29th May) is one of the world’s best-loved operas, brimming with lust, corruption and political intrigue. As fresh today as it was at the first performance, Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience (Tuesday 30th May) pokes fun at the eccentric affections of barely-disguised Victorian celebrities.

! e k a c , t e s , y d a e R We take a look at Cornwall Hospice Care and its fabulous team, whose efforts help many enjoy delicious food.
“The food is excellent, first-class hotel food,” wrote a patient staying with Cornwall Hospice Care at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. Another saying, “The food has stimulated my appetite.” words by:

é MAIN Judy Lawton at one of the amazing Community Fundraisers è RIGHT Gemma, one of the fabulous chefs at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice
T
here is an old saying that a little of what you fancy does you good. While this might be true for some, not everyone is lucky enough to fancy food. This is why it is so important that the chefs across the Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care work hard to produce mouth-watering meals three times a day to help tempt seriously ill patients to eat. They go out of their way to encourage less than hungry people to eat, from sourcing a person’s favourite sorbet to cooking a steak in a particular way. They also make the most delicious cakes, producing one recently for the young daughter of a patient so she didn’t miss out on the traditional celebration. But it isn’t just patients that get to enjoy fabulous cakes. Cake is at the heart of the charity’s fundraising efforts with coffee mornings and cream teas among the staples of the annual events list. “Cake is such a draw that we thought why not develop the theme and go for an all-out celebration,” says Judy Lawton, Community Fundraiser for Cornwall Hospice Care. “So three years ago we declared 6th May our annual Great Cornish Cake Bake Day and last year we raised a fantastic £8,500.
We picked this date because it happens to be National No Diet Day so there really is no excuse not to eat cake! This year the date falls on a Saturday so we’ve gone one better and will be holding the Great Cornish Cake Bake Weekend” – this is definitely one for the diary! The concept is simple, host an event at which you sell cake! “It can be a coffee morning, a cake sale in the office or a ‘guess the weight of the cake’ competition at school or work,” says Judy. “You can make it a community gathering like they did at Illogan, Redruth where the organiser told me afterwards that everyone welcomed getting together for something other than a wedding or a funeral! We’re also producing the Great Cornish Cake Bake Cake Book, which features handed down recipes and the personal stories of those who have provided them. We hope it will be on sale later this year.” – I will definitely make sure I whisk one up!
