coastline and the ruin of Tintagel castle (the supposed birthplace of King Arthur) just a little further up the coast, you can certainly imagine this as the setting for epic adventures. But returning back to the modern day, it’s ripe for escapades of your own.

The Jubilee Queen is a beautiful 40-year-old pleasure boat, built in Wadebridge, and still owned and managed by the same Padstow based family. | ACTIVITIES Rock is popular for dinghy sailing, and a great place to learn the ropes. Just around the headland from Padstow you’ll discover Harlyn Surf School. This fantastic school has been established for over 20 years and, alongside surf lessons, also offers stand-up paddle boarding, coasteering and sea kayaking, giving you the opportunity to explore the enchanting coastline in a variety of ways. As one happy customer notes, “The bay is beautiful; small and unspoiled. The location of the surf school could not be any better. Attentive instructors and fun for the family.”

Just down the coast, in Newquay, you’ll find Cornwall averunner afaris, perfect for exploring the coastline. ornwall’s north coast has been an inspiration for artists over the years and continues to be so. The picturesque surroundings haven’t gone unnoticed and numerous independent galleries and artists’ studios are based in this area of Cornwall.

Port Isaac captures the magnificence of the coast with deep blue waters that dance in the summer sun, set against the backdrop of rolling green hills. everal galleries are based here such as Cliffside allery and ave , just inland at Trelights. Cliffside is a working studio gallery, within which Katie Childs creates and displays an ever-changing e hibition of her work. Katie tells us: “the landscape around me provides a constant inspiration and theme throughout my paintings.”

Pentire Point juts out after Port Isaac; nicknamed ‘the Rumps’, the sprawling headland drops into the sea beyond like a carpet. Polzeath beach is nestled on the other side of the headland and gets the full force of the Atlantic ocean. Watching the ebb and flow of the waves is a mesmerising sight to behold and one that captivates both surfers and artists alike. ith a by-line: “beautiful buildings that don’t cost the earth,” the ARCO2 Architecture team emphasise that their projects are both cost effective and environmentally aware. Director Ian Armstrong tells us: “ARCO2 don’t just build you a dwelling or office, we create homes with benefits to enhance your lifestyle literally building homes for future generations.”

This building approach is evident in the creation of ‘Mellalue’, an outstanding coastal property designed and built by ARCO2’s inhouse construction company. When creating and building this remarkable property, the ARCO2 team worked closely with their client to achieve their vision to the highest possible standard, whilst also taking into consideration the impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours.

Ian continues: “as a RIBA Chartered Architects Practice we have a unique, innovative and human approach to design which is evident in this stunning house.” The new dwelling replaces a mid-20th Century bungalow, which was of little architectural merit and didn’t make the most of the beautiful site. ARCO2 stepped in and with a brief from the client to construct a low

energy, contemporary home that could accommodate a family with teenagers and elderly parents; the team made moves to construct this impressive property. Ian emphasises that: “one of the key design considerations was to retain the sea views for the neighbouring building behind and improve their outlook.” With this in mind, the house was designed with a curved roof to maximise space, minimise impact and enhance the neighbour’s perspective.

It’s the perfect place to relax with a glass of award-winning wine (tasting sessions cost just £8!), or taste the delights of ead Chef, ndy ppleby.

From here, it’s a short ride to the spectacular north coast, where you can pass from reyarnon to Constantine, across Trevose golf course and past the surf beach of Harlyn, before heading up and down

to the picturesque cove of Trevose. This journey isn’t for the fainthearted, but Kelly explains that it’s perfectly suitable for families. “It gets the children used to cycling with low levels of traffic and the small hills test everybody’s stamina!”

The next hill is challenging and you may find yourself having to get off and push, but Kelly tells us “it’s an absolute must if you enjoy coastal views. Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll find yourself looking over an incredible array of coloured flowers, churned mud, vegetables and livestock to see the whole coast unfolding below you. I can think of worse places to stop and catch your breath!

“From here, following a little-used lane, you can travel right out to the point above awker’s Cove, where once again you’ll be rewarded with dramatic views, this time across the Camel stuary towards Pol eath, ock, and Padstow for miles. ho knows, you may even spot the crew filming hit show, Poldark!”

Retreating from this fabulous vista, head back towards Crugmeer and down into the well-known fishing village of Padstow. rom here, hop on the ferry and sail smoothly across to the wide sandy beach of ock, where you can simply disembark, hop back on your bikes and set off again

“A typical day involves looking after the lobsters, which are hatching their eggs, and caring for the juveniles. A large part of my job is liaising with the fishing community to source the adults we need to carry out our work.”

“In general conservation terms, people just need to be more aware of what their actions can do and how to minimise their impact on our ecosystem. We have a busy volunteer programme, which allows people to help us in our visitor centre or in our hatchery itself! We also have initiatives such as B buy one set one free where restaurateurs can donate money to us based on customer donations.

Also, people can become ‘friends of the hatchery’ or even become a patron!”

t’s easy to appreciate Rick Stein’s love of Cornwall and what lead him to base so many of his eateries here. Rick says: “I like the fact that on a sunny day, with not a cloud in the sky, there’s nowhere else on earth I would rather be. Maybe it’s because we don’t have that many sunny days or maybe it’s the soft quality of light that gives the white houses, green patches of trees and the deep blue estuary the look of a water colour.” Whatever it is about Cornwall, it’s definitely made an impact on ick, which is reflected in his love of the sea and seafood Nestled a few miles up the Camel Estuary is the beautiful fishing port of Padstow. In the narrow streets around the harbour there are tiny old pubs, famous restaurants and quirky art galleries among which you’ll find the Rick Stein family of businesses, all providing incredible seafood, one way or another.

Why not start by heading to Rick Stein’s Café and tuck into a delicious serving of Asian inspired salt and pepper prawns; with its relaxed setting, it’s the perfect place to refuel with the family. Or, if you’re in a rush to carry on your tour of Cornwall then grab a traditional bo of fish and chips and look out at the Camel Estuary as you make your way through your box of goodness.

For something a little more formal, enjoy drinks on the terrace at The Seafood Restaurant, where it all began. ver the last few decades, north Cornwall has been steadily building a reputation for itself as a world-class foodie destination, particularly in the towns and villages surrounding the Camel Estuary, but stretching all across the coast, down to St Ives and up the Atlantic Highway to Bude.

North Cornwall promises a rich bounty, with an abundance of fantastic produce harvested, caught or produced in the area, from fresh fish landed off the local quays to tender meat and fresh vegetables from the local farms – even wine produced from nearby Cornish vineyards. Boscastle Farm Shop & Cafe is built on National Trust land, and is in a stunning location, just North of Boscastle harbour on the B3263. The culinary calendar culminates in the Padstow Christmas Festival, one of Cornwall’s most popular foodie festivals, known for its chef demonstrations and fantastic market, perfect for picking up last minute Christmas presents for those hard-to-buy-for relatives.

GOLF WITH A DIFFERENCE Green’s of Padstow is introducing its new and improved mini-golf course, so prepare to club up and get competitive.

W

ith stunning views over ABOVE INSET the Camel Estuary, Greens Greens of Padstow, of Padstow is a great place a chic café to watch the world go by overlooking the as you tuck into delicious food and look Camel Estuary, that’s also home out at the breathtaking views. The café to a wonderful was refurbished in 2017 and is now fully mini-golf course

licenced so you can sip on a cool beer after a competitive game of mini-golf.

Owner Sharon Whittock tells us: “the golf course is almost complete and has been totally renewed the first phase of planting Cornish landscape ‘themed’ gardens has been undertaken – including fruit trees, coastal grasses, palm trees and herbs.”

The course is undergoing this extensive landscaping with the aim to create lush gardens around each hole, honouring the beauty of the site and using four planting themes: ‘Cornish orchard’, ‘Cornish cliff and grassland’, ‘Cornish woodland garden’ and ‘Cornish subtropical’.

The intention is to enrich and diversify the landscape, whilst also contributing to the overall playing experience. With this in mind, the team at Greens of Padstow have asked

local artists: Peter Graham, Reece Ingram and Claire and Tim Stockings-Baker to create sculptures inspired by nature, which will feature among the putting holes. Over the course of three years, other artists will add sculptures with 18 being commissioned in total, one for each hole. They may be created out of readymade or recycled elements, natural materials or bespoke pieces. Sharon tells us: “ the point is that they should be ingenious, fun, thought provoking and engagingly beautiful.”

It sounds like this course is set to be a pretty remarkable one, accentuating and drawing from the natural elements that surround it.

With the café offering the perfect respite once your game is over, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner it’s an attraction unto itself… As well as the golf course and incredible views over the Camel Estuary that is.
