ell, I think that’s an excuse for a celebration, don’t you! We are so proud to have reached issue 100 of Cornwall Living and as a tribute to some of our founding friends, this month’s cover feature takes a look at why they love living and working in Cornwall (page 20). For me it’s the combination of community, coast and countryside, all of which I have been lucky enough to write about over the last eight years. To mark our 100th issue we have teamed up with Porthleven Holiday Cottages to give you the chance to win a stay for six people and a dog at ‘Harbour Heights’, right here in our home village. Turn to page 71 to find out how to enter this and our other amazing competitions. Keeping with the centenary theme, we hear from Martyn Rohrs of multi award-wining estate agency Rohrs and Rowe about their incredible last 100 days in the property market (page 35) and introduce a new strategic planning company, Cliff and Ocean (page 38), that is helping homeowners realise the property of their dreams in the Duchy. nteriors are definitely one of my favourite things to read about and this issue ’ve gleaned some fantastic ideas for my own home upcycling, the use of bold prints and colours and some fine furnishings to name but a few. Discover more from page 41. And finally, would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our loyal readers. know some of you have been with us since the start and look forward every four weeks to picking up the latest issue of Cornwall Living. We couldn’t have done this without you so, for the 100th time… … happy reading!

Local company offers a unique service for home owners When Cornwall Council announced it would no longer be collecting holiday home waste, entrepreneur and owner of cleaning company Maid Sense, Jennifer Brown and her family took matters into their own hands. A van, a waste licence and four successful years later Holiday Home Waste Collection now has more than 1,500 holiday homes on its books.

Join the club In the wake of the recent lockdown, as we try to make up for lost time in the sun and with the onset of autumn inevitably lurking around the corner, it’s time to make the most of sunny evening soirées with a glass of our favourite tipple to hand.

Jennifer and her team work around the clock and across the county. A eet of vans collect general waste and mixed dry recycling ensuring premises are rubbish free. A 240 litre recycling bin is provided to each customer as well as a glass tub to encourage recycling on the annual option. They can even arrange ad-hoc collections if visitors hold a party or large meal that creates excess waste. Recycling has always been at the forefront of the business model and as much waste as possible is collected and recycled or used to create green electricity. Jennifer explains to us: “Since returning after lockdown we’ve noticed that people have been dining at their holiday homes more and more, so the waste produced has in fact trebled in size! My team are working extremely hard in all weathers to get their jobs done. We’re doing everything possible to keep staff and customers safe by wearing gloves, masks and using wipes and sanitiser. We’re just so excited to see tourists return to the area.”

Holiday Home Waste Collection also manages waste clearances from pubs, restaurants, local shops and weddings and sister company, Cornwall Wheelie Bin Cleaning Company Ltd, completes this incredible end-to-end waste management service. For more information call 01208 815060 or 07814 934978, or visit www.holidayhomewastecollection.co.uk or www.cornwallwheeliebincleaning.co.uk

With that in mind, be sure to join The Little Gin Shack Club! That’s right, as well as offering an unbelievable selection of gins from around the world via their online shop, the team also offer a free digital subscription that ensures you receive all the latest news from the world of gin, alongside exclusive offers and tempting discounts that promise to help keep your drinks cabinet stocked. Be sure to also keep an eye on the website for Neil’s monthly ‘Notes from The Little Gin Shack’, which also feature regular offers, discounts and updates from this stellar Cornish ‘ginporium’. Add to all of this Neil’s series of ‘Perfect Serve’ videos, which talk you through some of his favourite recipes and how to make the most of ornwall’s finest gins, and there’s no reason why any of us should be making the most of the summer without a gin in our hands! the foodies

Open throughout the autumn and winter, the feast-worthy menu serves up traditional family favourites alongside daily specials and mouth-watering Sunday roasts. With three choices of locally sourced meats, as well as a vegetarian option to choose from, these ever-popular roasts are served with a selection of veggies and heaps of crunchy roasties. Round things off with a delicious dessert before wrapping up and walking off full tummies along the half-mile of golden sands, mere moments away. Onsite parking is available and pre-booking is definitely advised so be sure to contact the team in advance to secure your table! A great example is the company’s range of Beach Ponchos. Beautifully eye-catching, very soft on the skin and incredibly functional, all ponchos are made using the finest materials, with no microfibres or plastics. Whether you’re on the beach, at the pool, have just jumped out of the shower, or are simply lounging around at home, these ponchos promise to keep you comfortable and warm. And if you are out and about, perhaps having ust finished a surf, one of these ponchos will serve brilliantly as a mobile changing room – really handy in Cornwall’s busy car parks! They offer particularly warm, twin-layer hoods with high collars and hardy pull cords, while the large front and side pockets provide ample

space for carrying your belongings, and are especially good for warming your hands when temperatures start to drop. The company’s ethos is centred around a love for the environment, which is why all Poncho materials used carry the ‘STANDARD 100’ label. This means you can be certain that every component of your new purchase – and we mean every component – has been fully tested for harmful substances and that it is therefore harmless in ecological terms. It also guarantees that the item was manufactured in sustainable working conditions, something we can all agree is now more important than ever. The range includes Style ponchos, Travel ponchos, Children’s ponchos, Zip ponchos and Storm ponchos, and take it from us: they’re well worth checking out! Lockdown: no match for Colourfence! The current pandemic has caused global disruption and this has been no different for our local businesses here in Cornwall. One such business was Colourfence Cornwall, but as Olly Daglish, Director of Colourfence Cornwall explains, they are very much back on track: “We had to cease all installations for six weeks during lockdown and have had to re-adjust the business model to catch up and get back on track. ith more fitters on each job we’ve managed to cut the back log, and I’m pleased to say we are very much

back on track with a healthy order book ahead of us!” It wasn’t easy having to delay work, but with things getting back to normal, customers are delighted. One such customer is Julie from Truro who had her fence installed in July. “I cannot praise this company enough. The team were professional, friendly and courteous especially in this present climate. Would not hesitate in recommending.” For more information call 01637 222 578 or visit www.colourfence.co.uk

A warm welcome

The current exhibition is ‘Newlyn School Interiors’, a lovely show celebrating the talents of the Newlyn School painters, a group of artists who settled in Newlyn in the 1880s. Although the artists were most famous for painting out of doors - ‘en plein air’ - they were also highly skilled at painting the interiors of Newlyn, including cottages, schools, sail lofts, workshops and scenes posed in the artists’ own homes and studios. The exhibition explores the lives of Newlyners through these unique and special paintings. Newlyn School Interiors includes the pictured oil painting by Henry Tuke Scott (1858-1929), titled ‘Dinner Time’ (1883) – purchased in 2012 with funding from The Art Fund, the MLA/V&A Purchase Fund and The Friends of Penlee House. Local author, Gail Rayner, takes inspiration from her combined love of the ocean and Cornwall. Working as a nurse, Gail’s romantic and light-hearted fiction draws on her own experiences, her characters in uenced by people she knows or has known in the past, giving all a special meaning. From the surf at Polzeath, to the small streets of Polperro, Gail takes the reader on a journey through some of the south west’s special locations. The Lady and Castles are already in print and available to buy on the Austin Macauley website or on Amazon. And watch this space, because two upcoming new stories are also in the pipeline. Whilst she can’t reveal too much at this stage, Gail tells us that both are works of fiction one will draw on her own experiences as a nurse, and the other will take her readers back to the trenches of the Great War, following the story of a British tank regiment. A helping hand With all of us having spent prolonged periods of time at home, and holidays abroad being replaced with staycations, we are realising the importance and value of our outdoor areas. With busy work and family lives we don’t always get the chance to appreciate what we have, but the current climate is allowing many of us to see where we can invest and improve both aesthetically and practically. Bruce and Katie, of Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems, have experienced just that. Along with their children, who have been home schooled from the office, the couple have worked throughout, but getting out in their own garden has been a lifesaver. Kestrel’s post and rail systems are perfect for enhancing raised patios, decking areas and stairs, bringing a touch class to any outside space.

The idea of ‘Kernow Rocks’ is that people enjoy painting rock-art and hiding them so that people can find them it brings a bit of happiness to their day, and then they re-hide the rock-art to do the same for someone else. There are over 1,000 people taking part around Cornwall, and Bluebird Care love that one of the team’s live-in customers and her Caring Companion are involved. Doing this brings joy to her life, knowing she can do what she loves, share it with someone else, and also be part of the community spreading some positivity. This is a huge part of what Bluebird Care aims to achieve. Bluebird Care strongly believes that most people prefer care at home, and one of the best ways to achieve this is with live-in care. You can enjoy having a

to grow friendly companion on-hand 24/7, retaining as much independence and dignity as possible, whilst safely receiving support tailored to your needs. The benefits are incredible being in familiar surroundings, staying close to loved ones and pets, keeping independence and with little disruption to daily lives. It also gives peace of mind to friends and family knowing that care and support is always at hand. Being a live in carer is a great pathway into care-giving, with the opportunity to enrich someone’s life in the place they know best. A marvellous mural in Penryn Just Delights, Penryn is an amazing emporium of carefully selected homeware, gifts, stationery, furniture, paint and more. Step inside and you’ll find a veritable Aladdin’s cave of beautiful things that you’ll just want to own, all carefully curated by owner Jemma – but Just Delights doesn’t only look good on the inside. Every season, for the last six years, artist Elizabeth Perry has painted a beautiful mural onto the front of the building. However, the Spring/Summer design will sadly be the last one she will paint before she heads off on her next adventure. Jemma and her customers, who have looked forward to seeing her murals change with the seasons and will be sad to see them go, would like to take this opportunity to say thank you

Locally sourced The Bay restaurant is fortunate to be able to call upon the expertise of head chef Samuel Jones, not only for his culinary prowess but his other passion – that of commercial fisherman a definite bonus for any coastal based hotel. And when he’s not conjuring up contemporary dishes to excite the most jaded palate or out in the bay sourcing ingredients, he can be found down by the harbour selecting the catch of the crop. He then returns to his kitchen, at the hotel, to prepare a platter fit for a king or queen. One of his favourites is a mackerel based recipe that combines pickled carrots and cucumber with an anchovy mayo overlaid with a soya dressing. As they say, we devour our food with our eyes before even the first mouthful is consumed. Sam certainly has the knack of producing an aesthetically pleasing plate as well as one that is packed with avour.

LEFT Godrevy, one of our favourite places to unplug and unwind

I

t’s the early hours of the morning and bleary-eyed we press the print button for the first time on a new magazine, Cornwall Living. Born out of a desire to help local businesses expand and grow, through both advertising and editorial, and to create engaging content for our readers who love Cornwall as much as we do. I’m not sure that any of us knew what to expect on our journey, but as someone who has been involved from the very first issue couldn’t be prouder of the magazine it has become today. And so, in tribute to eight years of creative content in print and online, we hear from those who supported us from the start. first met onathan unliffe when was interviewing him for a comment piece for one of our early issues. He was working for another company at the time, but has since started his own successful estate agency (jonathancunliffe.co.uk) and continues to be an advocate for the magazine. Self-confessed as having lived in Cornwall a very long time, onathan is inspired by Cornwall’s coast and history. His treasured times have all involved the water, as he spends his free time either on it or in! When asked for his favourite place to be, a couple of secret beaches were not going to be divulged but he does recommend the New Yard Restaurant, Trelowarren and La Cave, Falmouth as his favourite eateries. ’m intrigued as to onathan’s view of why Cornwall is such a unique place to live and work: “Because people choose to live here, rather than live here because they work here. Also, because water sports is the common denominator. Everyone either surfs, sails, rows, dives, paddleboards or swims, creating an ocean community.”

And as to his association with the magazine: “The team behind Cornwall Living has a proven track record at distribution, which means their publications get in front of the right people, rather than gathering dust on a newsstand. It has been a pleasure to work closely with them since they created this vibrant magazine.” My association with George EdwardCollins began while creating a brochure for his company Cornish Traditional Cottages (corncott.com). Back in the days when you could meet over a coffee and a cheek kiss was the adopted continental etiquette for greeting, I remember commenting on the softness of his beard! A classic Hannahspanner moment, but George, always the gentleman, was kindly non-plussed by my random comment and we have successfully worked together ever since.

George has lived in Cornwall for 38 years and worked here for the last 11. “I get inspired by the diversity of the Cornish landscape as I love the outdoors and feel very privileged to have this on my doorstep. hen am fit and well love surfing, cycling and walking mostly with the family and I love the open spaces on Bodmin Moor. It’s the peace you can get when having an early surf or cycle ride.” Ever the romantic, George proposed to his wife whilst picnicking on Hawkes Tor, his unforgettable Cornish memory: “We have it all here, coast, country, history and diversity, which makes it such a brilliant place to live and work. We are proud to have supported Cornwall Living since it came into publication. I have found their audience to be engaged with the magazines, and this has served us well in getting our business in front of the right type of customer. I have always found the team to be helpful and professional throughout our relationship and I look forward to working with Cornwall Living for many years to come.” ichael Spiers ewellers michaelspiers. co.uk) is a Cornish retail icon, crafting and selling fine ewellery and watches for over years. Michael’s son Adam met our founder, Andy, when Cornwall Living was just an idea: “We were drawn in by his passion for life in Cornwall and his vision of something different for the county.” Adam has lived and worked in the south west for most of his life – a Cornishman born and bred. For him it is the diversity of landscape, beaches, towns, villages, people and food that inspire him daily.

A common theme amongst our commentators, Adam also loves the beach and the water: “As a child, I could be found running around Looe barefoot, completely feral until the age of Slightly more restrained these days, he would normally be found surfing at atergate ay, but sadly a knee injury in March put paid to this. But it’s not all bad as Adam now has more time to spend sampling the amazing local food and wine! “For me it has to be lunch at Mannings and dinner The Alverton, both in Truro. I never need an excuse to visit our Truro store! I feel blessed that my father started the business in Looe during the late ’s. e was drawn down by the amazing lifestyle, but more importantly the people.” No retrospective would be complete without talking to Tamsin Thomas, Head of PR and Communications at Cornwall Hospice Care (cornwallhospicecare.co.uk). Her smiling face has brought cheer to our offices on every visit and her passion for Cornwall and the charity for which she works is truly inspiring. Tamsin grew up in the tiny village of Polruan opposite Fowey: “I now realise it was an idyllic childhood. My most treasured memories both as a child and with my own children, are of being in and around the Isles of Scilly. We spent many holidays on St Agnes when I was little and with my children, we sailed there every year, in fact we still do. At 21 I joined the BBC and set out to conquer the world, but my love of Cornwall was too strong and I’ve been based here throughout my career in broadcasting and then charity communications. I now live in Fowey with a view of my original home village!”

Inspired by the sea, the landscape, the people and knowing she’s always been a part of this amazing community has been her motivation: “I can’t imagine a better place to bring up a family and to take time out to count your blessings. I spend my spare time sailing, walking the dogs, supporting my daughter with her horse riding activities and meeting friends in special places like secret beaches or the not so secret Duchy Nursery at Lostwithiel! I think my favourite place in Cornwall has got to be home in Fowey, but I have to say that when I was working for the RNLI I developed a love for every Cornish place that had a lifeboat!” For Tamsin it’s all about striking a good work life balance: “Here I can be at work and twenty minutes later I can be walking on the beach, breathing in the fresh salty air and clearing my head. For me there’s a pride in working for a charity that serves Cornwall and its people. I also believe people underestimate how forward-thinking Cornwall is in terms of supporting business, providing technology and encouraging remote working. “Cornwall Hospice Care has enjoyed a very successful relationship with Cornwall Living. It’s provided us with a professional platform from which we can share our story, the ways in which people can get involved and the difference our supporters make. Caring for terminally ill patients and their families calls for teamwork, but so too does our determination to ensure everyone understands who we are and why we are here.” As editor of Cornwall Living it has been a pleasure to meet and interview so many wonderful people over the last issues. Cornwall is everything to me – my family, my home, my friends and my place of work. All connected by this beautiful county. We have lived through some strange times these past six months, and it has taught me to see Cornwall anew. From the resilience of its people to newly discovered places, from a new way of working to returning to old values. I believe we have emerged bolder and stronger and look forward to the next issues

100 DAYS AFTER LOCKDOWN In view of our 100th issue, we take a retrospective look at the first hundred days of the property market since lockdown, by catching up with Rohrs and Rowe, awarded Cornwall's best estate agency.

I RIGHT Prestigious properties that the company has sold throughout Cornwall

t came as a surprise to many that the housing market re-opened quite so suddenly on th ay and the first days of activity that followed were unlike any other in recent history, proving the desirability of ornwall is on more people s minds across the country than ever before. hat ornwall has to offer is obviously extremely topical right now, from its beautiful beaches and coastline to its open space and lower population density. ost lockdown, people’s life plans and priorities have most definitely changed. or example, those who were looking to retire in five years are bringing this forward and they are therefore wanting to move in a much quicker time frame. uyers who were thinking of purchasing a continental retreat are also now contacting us saying they have changed their target destination to ornwall, artyn explains. There are people who own smaller second homes in ornwall who are now looking to trade it up to a much larger home, as they seek to either move, or spend much more of their time here. These are ust a few examples of the market activity. The style of houses that are sought-after has also changed. The coastal properties have always been and will remain in highest demand, but the largest shift has been in the country market. hether it is a comfortably sized family house in good-sized gardens and grounds, or larger country houses within more privacy and plenty of space to accommodate guests or multi-generational family members, the demand has lifted dramatically. roperties with established income streams too, as Martyn predicted in our property cover story in Cornwall Living issue 95, are also proving extremely popular indeed. A shift in work culture, atthew states, manifested by ovid- , means that more professional people are being afforded the exibility of working from home e are finding that a lot of interest is from professionals, of both younger and older generations. Several of the buyers are also people born in ornwall, who moved to other areas for educational or professional

reasons and they are now able and wanting to return to ornwall with their families, and it’s the shift in work culture that is allowing it to happen sooner in life than people had first planned. The current situation is definitely changing people s lives. This combination has meant that it has been an incredibly busy few months for ohrs and owe, resulting in a record number of sales being agreed over the summer period and there being a lack of property for sale in relation to the high demand. f anyone is thinking about capitalising on the feel good factor in the market, would urge them to get in touch in with us in order to discuss what we are able to offer that is very different to our competitors, concludes artyn.

or any property project, planning, design, feasibility, surveys, site and objections all need to be taken into account. For some, this gamut of avenues that need to considered can be overwhelming. For others, time is a limiting factor and both of these examples can be a real blocker if you are looking to undertake a property project. That’s where Adam at Cliff and Ocean comes in. A consummate project manager and Built Environment Consultant, his confidence in being able to deliver your dream property will make you breathe a sigh of relief. Whether you are an existing home owner in Cornwall wanting to renovate or expand, you live out of county and want to relocate to the Duchy or are looking for a ‘bricks and mortar’ investment, Adam and his team of property advisers, planning and architectural consultants can help you achieve your property goals. While working in London, Adam had the idea for a company that specialised in finding and creating the perfect home and lifestyle in Cornwall: “As many Cornish people do, I moved to the city to pursue my career, but quickly realised that I no longer wanted my life to revolve around early

starts, late finishes, a dirty, unfriendly city, a cost of living that outweighed even the best salary, and a quality of life that was nonexistent. I spent the next couple of weeks looking at work, housing, school and life opportunities in the south west and realised that's where my future lay. Cliff and Ocean exists in order to find, or create, our clients a dream home. A home that can make a perfect work life balance become a reality. And a home that exceeds all expectations.” Adam and his team offer a turnkey solution, from helping you find a site or property, to advising on how you could extend or improve your existing home. Their in-depth knowledge of the local area, its sometimes unique planning constraints and how to overcome the challenges of unusual and remote locations is second to none. So, if you are looking to create your dream home in Cornwall, Cliff and Ocean should be your first port of call.

THE OBVIOUS

CHOICE

There is no doubt that Covid-19 has hit the high street in all our towns. But how are they all adapting to their new retailing?

or Alfred Smith and Son in Penzance, the clear solution was to offer customers Stay Safe Appointments, providing customers one-hour slots to have a unique shopping experience, giving them peace of mind and a relaxing experience whilst looking at and trying products. They have even made soft coverings for their beds that enable customers to lay on them without worrying who may have been there before. But who are Alfred Smith and Son? They are in fact the oldest independent furniture retailer in the country, having started life in 1811. The company is now run by Alfred Smith’s great grand-daughter, Sue, and her husband Marcus. The company’s ethos has always been to strive to deliver high levels of service and value for money for their customers, whilst offering a comprehensive selection of products. Behind its imposing facade there is a multitude of home furnishings to tempt us all. nside, you’ll find everything from carpets to curtains, supplied by leading carpet and fabric suppliers and laid by expert carpet fitters, as well as window treatments handmade by Alfred Smith’s own seamstress, who has an amazing eye for detail. Dining tables for kitchens and dining rooms can also be found in a multitude of sizes, in stylish designs in oak, marble and a host of other materials.

There’s also a range of upholstery from leading manufacturers, in designs to suit both the older traditional market as well as the younger open-plan modern homes of today. The bed department is a force to reckoned with too, showcasing the wide variety of mattresses available for today’s consumers. Though every mattress may look the same, it’s not until you lay on one that you can fully appreciate what makes the difference between one and the other, offering the support we all crave for. Sue and the team also offer a ‘mattress in a box’ for those of us that need one now, though to be fair, they do stock a number of mattresses with immediate delivery, and will always do their utmost to accommodate your needs! For us, Alfred Smith is a gentle giant in today’s market, offering an amazing assortment of furnishings alongside their toy and gift department, and whether you live in Penzance or are visiting, this is a store that needs to be supported. Be wise, make that Stay Safe Appointment, and discover what’s on offer for yourself!

GLAZING

A family run team of glazing specialists who bring quality to the fore.

B

uilding has always been in the blood of Alan Britton, MD of Bude Windows and Conservatories. Back in 1995, searching for new double glazing to their own home they saw a woeful lack of quality, products and service available in the area. So, alongside wife Lorraine, Alan decided to remedy this and start his own quality glazing and replacement window business. 25 years on and the business has gone from strength to strength, now boasting its own showroom in Bude. Alan tells us: “I put the secret of our success down to never compromising on quality, whether it be in the materials and products we use or the high standard of workmanship we’ve become known for.” Alan and Lorraine’s son Daniel also joined the business in 2008 after completing a building apprenticeship and qualifications in window fitting. This hands-on expertise means that he is now well-placed to advise and quote for work, something he does with a ‘no pressure’ approach. There’s never any obligation or deadline to decide, in line with the company’s ethos of quality, whether that be of product, sales or service. Lorraine heads up the marketing portfolio alongside office manager Samantha and a team of highly trained, professional glazing

and building specialists, hand-picked for their qualifications and skills. The company not only offers traditional double glazed windows and doors but also a full range of thermally efficient and eco-friendly specialist glazings that are available to be framed in a variety of designer features such as roof lanterns, sky lights and bi-folding doors. Aluminium installations have also become very popular in recent years and are now proving to have more appeal than traditional uPVC products. As a family-run business, Alan, Lorraine and Daniel, feel they are very fortunate to be able to live and work in beautiful north Cornwall. “We pride ourselves as being very involved in the local Bude community, where family run businesses are a tradition. We’re currently involved in supporting a charity – Friends of Bude Sea Pool – that is dedicated to keeping this famous amenity cut into the rock at Summerleaze Beach up and running for the pleasure of locals and visitors,” says Alan.

g n i z a l B A TRAIL

Combining Nordic style with excellent eco-credentials, we discover the Aduro Hybrid range of woodburners available at Wendron Stoves.

DISCOVER MORE Don’t just take our word for it. James and Mads from Constantine were delighted with the service they received from Wendron Stoves: “The installers were great, very hard workers and surprisingly quiet. They did a brilliant job and were so good cleaning up after themselves. Thanks again for a great job.”

W

ith over 30 years’ experience, Wendron Stoves knows more than most about wood-burning stoves. With an intimate knowledge of the industry, coupled with super customer service, the team are best-placed to advise on a wide range of stoves, range cookers and barbeque heaters. With one of the largest stoves showrooms in Cornwall at their agship store in elston, you can happily wander around this relaxing environment, seeing stoves in a home-from-home setting. With over 90 stoves to look at, in both traditional and contemporary styles, there is something to suit every taste and home. With new government regulations meaning that any new wood-burning stove must meet the latest, stringent eco design we learned with interest about a new stove that is combining a traditional wood burn with environmentally friendly heating from wood pellets. The Aduro ybrid range offers the aesthetics of a wood-burning ame combined with a vastly more controllable heat source from an integral pellet burner. If you want to use the stove with firewood, you can ust add wood as with a normal stove and the stove will automatically shut off the pellet function. If you require a more controllable heat, then you can ust fire up the pellet burner. The look is Nordic contemporary with a modern cylindrical body and stainless steel handles. But these stoves are far more than ust being visually appealing. The Aduro ybrid reduces emissions significantly compared to conventional wood burning stoves: with the pellet function, the CO emission is reduced by 97%, the OGC emission by 91%, and the dust emission by 59%. While the pellet function is active you have a stove that can safely and happily run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will stay in overnight and with the addition of a very clever app, you can even turn the stove on from your smart phone when you are not at home. Imagine it… gone are those chilly mornings when you come down to get ready for work and school and the stove’s gone out. Simply set the timer when you go to bed and the stove will offer you a lovely warm welcome each day. Similarly, if the weather takes a turn for the worse while you are out, light it from the app on your phone and there’ll be no more getting home from work to a cold, dark house.

The app will also allow you to regulate the temperature and keep a track on the combustion once the stove is alight. Aduro currently has more than 7,000 stoves registered via the app, where they are tracking more than 4,000 stoves operating every day. The Aduro range are great for heating large spaces and, as they comply with the necessary regulations, they can also be used to heat conservatories. Such is its innovation that in 2018 the Danish company Aduro A/S was awarded the prestigious European Business Award for the Environment on a national level in the category 'Sustainable roducts and Services . The Aduro ybrid offers exibility and functionality far beyond that of a normal stove and with its low emission and clean burning it is one of the most environmentally friendly methods of wood heating ever designed. Why not pop into one of Wendron Stoves' showrooms in elston or Truro, where you can talk to an expert and watch the stove in action. If you decide to buy one, which we think you will, then you can rest assured that Wendron Stoves will take care of everything. They offer an initial, no-obligation site survey and can provide a competitive quote for a complete installation. As a TAS approved retailer and installer all advice and installation complies with Building Regulations and British Standards and the team can also keep your stove burning brightly and safely with a recommended yearly service. So, all that remains for you to do is light your fire, pop your feet up and relax in front of the warmth and ambience of your new stove.

INTERIORS

Interior designer, Chloe Woods finds novel ways of using sustainable materials to design engaging interiors.

L

iving by the sea, Chloe is acutely aware of the impact an interior renovation can have on our environment. She is keen to use local suppliers and source sustainable and recyclable materials where possible. er recent find is a carpet made of plastic waste recovered from the world's oceans: “You might think a carpet made from recycled fishing nets would be coarse under foot, but it’s actually very soft and durable too.” We asked Chloe what she loves most about her work en oy finding inventive ways to make an impact using simple materials.” For example, the feature wall of the hydrotherapy pool at St Michaels Resort in Falmouth is made from projecting frames clad in reclaimed timber and their Garden Kitchen light fitting is a bespoke piece using reclaimed timber, jute covered lighting cables and exposed golden LED light bulbs. Chloe runs Interior Design evening classes at Truro and Penwith College where she helps people to feel confident about their own interior design choices. Chloe suggests choosing a starting point,

whether that’s a piece of furniture, or a fabulous work of art, and building your scheme around it: “Collect inspirational images that work well with your starting piece, then look for common themes to help you settle on a palette of colours, textures and finishes which can inspire your future choices and purchases.” She is passionate about the use of colour and advises: “Don’t be afraid build confidence with paint finishes first, because if you don’t like it you can always paint over it. Alternatively, you can add colour using accessories and soft furnishings which are more cost effective to replace.” Chloe is also an upholsterer: “I enjoy using techniques that were developed over 200 years ago to extend the life of furniture, it makes good environmental sense too, which is a key aspect of my work in Cornwall.”

THE HEAT

is on!

The team at Eden Hearth & Home are back in the showroom and feeling excited and optimistic about the remainder of the year.

E We have totally updated our gas fire range to include the latest high efficiency models from modern to traditional styles

den’s owner Tracy Johnson told us how they have used the lockdown period to really get to grips with all the new products that were coming on the market this year. She said that in the last 18 months there has been a huge shift in how people heat their homes. With many families now living in well insulated houses there was not always the need for a huge roaring fire. ustomers are demanding a little more technology from the main focal point of the room and do not want to compromise on looks or style. With mood lighting and app controls, todays modern fires have really caught up with the st century, she told us. So as not to disappoint, Tracy and the team have made significant changes to the ranges of fires and fireplaces that they have on display in their showroom. They have undergone a big refurbishment installing lots of exciting new products.

She went on to say: “We have looked at all the best manufacturers and have chosen a good cross section of the best fires and fireplaces on the market. These include the latest range of modern electric fires that really give the 'wow' feature to any home.” However, she added that they have not forgotten about gas fires for those customers who love the natural glow of a real ame and the look of a real fire e have totally updated our gas fire range to include the latest high efficiency models from modern to traditional styles we have something to suit everyone.” And not forgetting what Eden do best. espoke fireplaces The team offers a complete service to its customers including a full survey by a qualified installer to make sure that the customer gets exactly the right products to suit their home and their individual style. Fireplaces can be made in many colours and materials and with over 60 designs in their portfolio they are confident you will find ust the right style. verything in their range can be made to size, so if you do not want to replace your existing carpet but would love a new fireplace then that’s no problem at all; the surveyor will measure up and Eden will make it to suit. The showroom is operating as normal now and they have put measures in place to keep everyone as safe as possible. They are encouraging customers to make an appointment to visit. This way you can spend more time in store discussing your requirements, and they are only allowing one family or bubble in the showroom at a time. A CASING

Lilly Lewarne demonstrates nearly three decades of architectural experience, bringing to life the vision of the Headland Hotel’s all-new Aqua Club.

F

or those who follow us here at Cornwall Living, the name Lilly Lewarne may well ring a bell. An award-winning chartered architectural practice based in Truro, Lilly Lewarne brings more than 25 years’ experience in Cornish architecture to the table, and the team pride themselves on their depth of local knowledge and sterling reputation for excellent design. To prove it, we could take you on a journey through the many projects the team has been involved with, however we feel that one very recent – and particularly special – project sums up everything that Lilly Lewarne’s clients, past and present, value in this excellent ornish firm. The iconic Headland Hotel in Newquay perches above the sands of Fistral, and its ethos of moving with the times and delivering what its modern clientele expect from a contemporary luxury hotel well and truly sets it apart from the competition. It was this ethos that saw owners John and Carolyn Armstrong embark on the development of the hotel’s all-new, multi-million-pound leisure experience, The Aqua Club. And who better to help bring their vision to life than Lilly Lewarne Architects?

Our brief on this project was simple, to create an exceptional and outstanding building, and to ‘wow’ the client.

"

MARK DUSTON

Lilly Lewarne is a multi-disciplinary practice and as company Director, James tells us: “Our strength is our people, all of whom are members of their relevant professional body.” With Mark Duston, the Lead Project Architect for the Headland Hotel development, James agrees that to go from the concept to completion, without having to compromise on the design, is incredibly rewarding. In the case of the new Aqua Club, you need only quickly compare the initial 3D designs with photographs of the finished article, to see just how meticulously the team executed this impressive new spa facility. “Our brief on this project was simple,” explains Mark. “To create an exceptional and outstanding building, and to ‘wow’ the client.” On all fronts, it’s fair to say they delivered, but to call the brief ‘simple’ could be called somewhat modest. In fact, the entire project was undertaken with minimising the impact of the building very much in mind, as Mark explains e specified the use of natural stone and colouring to help the building blend into its environment as much as possible. A living roof and natural planting on stone hedging also help minimise the visual impact of the building, as well as providing a natural habitat for the ora and fauna found around the peninsula.” Mark and the team

even considered the impact of extra visitors and as a result, designated an underground car park as part of the new development. “The Aqua Club will bring top-of-the-range facilities to our guests,” explains hotelier John Armstrong, who owns the Headland along with his wife, Carolyn. “As our accommodation provision has grown, existing facilities are in high demand, particularly the spa and restaurants during high season. The Aqua Club will take the Headland into the next decade and beyond, providing the luxury experience that the destination has become well-known for.” With experience in commercial, educational, medical, leisure, spa, hotels and all aspects of residential architecture, Lilly Lewarne brings a broad range of professional expertise to the fore. The team are confident in their ability to meet and surpass the demands of any brief, and the Headland Hotel’s all new Aqua Club, to put it simply, serves as a casing point.

Resin bound surface experts, Oltco, partner with local luxury businesses to great effect.

DID YOU KNOW? Oltco also has previous experience working with other great local businesses that Cornwall has to offer, such as the Eden Project and Trevornick Holiday Park.

e always love to hear about a collaboration of Cornish businesses, with like-minded professionals working together to achieve something incredible. One such story has just come to our attention – a partnership between Oltco and two luxury hospitality businesses; The Headland Hotel and The Bodmin Jail Hotel. The Headland Hotel, iconic for its position atop the cliffs of Fistral, had external resin pathways installed, along with a bridge inside the spa area and infills on the roof. ltco was first brought to our attention via our site agents, J.E. Stacey,” a spokesperson from The Headland Hotel commented. “Oltco has created a great reputation around Cornwall, for providing high-quality workmanship and excellent results, which is why we felt confident in the decision to use its products. “We chose resin for our new pathways as not only is it low maintenance but also highly durable, so it would be the perfect surface to cope with a large volume of footfall from our visitors and guests. As we’re located next to Fistral beach it was great that we could pick a blend which not only complemented but also matched our surroundings, and it’s an added bonus that the blend is also called ‘Fistral’ too. Overall, Oltco has helped to elevate the outside area of the hotel and we’re incredibly impressed with the finished product.

The Bodmin Jail Hotel, a 4-star boutique hotel opening in spring 2021 which is being built within the walls of a Grade II listed building as part of a £40 million investment in odmin ail, also benefited from an expansive resin courtyard area in keeping with its contemporary design interwoven with the building’s original features. Oltco’s Johnny Pearce said: “The Headland Hotel is iconic around the local area. I have personally been visiting The Headland Hotel with my family for many years, so when I visit now, I feel really proud to see the Oltco resin surfaces. It also provided us with the opportunity to hire an extra member of the team and therefore helped to support the local economy. The collaboration of Oltco and The Headland Hotel and The Bodmin Jail Hotel is incredibly inspiring for us and we feel very thankful to have worked with such iconic businesses. These large commercial projects highlight Oltco’s well-established health and safety guidelines and its reputation as the go-to resin specialists in the area.”

RESTORE AND RENEW With the help of the experts at P&C Upholstery we learn that bringing new life to loved furniture can transform your home.

 TOP

High-quality workmanship using traditional skills

RIGHT & INSET Re-upholstered to a high standard 

T

here have been recent moves across Europe to move from a throwaway culture to a more circular economy. Sadly, Covid-19 has set us back somewhat but there are still ways that we can each do our bit to help. Take your furniture, for example. Ask yourself, do you really need to replace your sofa with a brand new one just because the cover is slightly worn? Is it essential that you purchase a new easy chair, wrapped and packed in plastic and polystyrene, oft-made from inferior timber to keep the cost down, while your old one goes to landfill For P&C Upholstery, a family company spanning three generations of the finest craftsmen, the answer would be a resounding no! Using either traditional or modern techniques, they can breathe new life back into your favourite piece of furniture, whilst retaining its characteristic qualities. They upholster to high exacting standards which mean that their work lasts for many more comfortable years. ou’ll often find that older furniture is made to a higher standard and uses higher quality materials. Wear and tear on fabric and stuffing is inevitable, but with the right skills, these can easily be replaced. The same with springs and webbing, you will be amazed at how skilled upholsterers can make even the most shabby and

uncomfortable chair a dream to sit in once more. And when the structure of your furniture has been rebuilt, there is an endless choice of beautiful fabrics to add that final ourish. Another important factor with re-upholstery is the need for a good understanding of the original manufacture. Mid-century modern is seeing a resurgence in this sector with names such as Ercol and Stag being much soughtafter pieces. The craftsmen at P&C Upholstery are able to use their skill and product knowledge to create sympathetic restorations with excellent attention to detail on these and antique pieces. And their expertise doesn’t stop there. The company can also undertake commercial contract work, from bespoke banquette seating and handcrafted headboards to the finishing touches of curtains, roman blinds and made-to-measure pelmets. So, if you have a much-loved piece of furniture that deserves a new lease of life or a new project idea, be sure to get in touch for a quote.

your reality There has never been a better time to move to Cornwall, so why not let Britannia Lanes help make it happen?

C

hoosing to move house is a big decision, particularly if that means moving to Cornwall, however with remote working becoming the norm now more than ever, there’s never been a better opportunity to gain a better work-life balance. Consider this: you have a Zoom meeting at midday and the beach is but a few minutes’ drive away. Why not squeeze in a quick surf or swim beforehand? For many of those already living and working in the Duchy, this is reality, but for anyone living in or near the city, it can seem like nothing more than a pipe dream. But as we say, with more businesses adopting remote working as the ‘new norm’, it could now be well within your reach! Providing a bespoke removals service to help make your dream happen, Britannia Lanes aims to make your move as stress free as possible, giving you one less thing to worry about when it comes to relocating. With the help of a dedicated team, Britannia Lanes can help whether you’re after a full or partpacking service, ensuring your belongings are conveyed as safely as possible to your new home by the sea. The company is run by Managing Director Mark Lane, along with his son Matt and daughter Sarah. “Balancing my role as a

mother alongside my part in our family business is made much easier when it’s possible to unwind in the beautiful surroundings that Cornwall has to offer,” says Sarah. “We know exactly why people would want to move to our beautiful county and we take great pride in helping them do so.” Always keen to dig a little deeper, we sought out a stellar review from one happy client, who said: “Great customer service making what could be a stressful experience a really positive one. Very professional. Took the time to listen to our requirements and delivered, and efficient, effective and tailored service that we would certainly recommend to others.” So there you have it – we couldn’t have put it better ourselves! If you’re thinking of moving to Cornwall to strike a healthier work-life balance, why not make it seamless with help from the experts at Britannia Lanes?

ecent world events have meant that many of us are reconnecting with our gardens and appreciating the private space and tranquillity they afford. So, with a new season just around the corner why not extend what has been a summer of outdoor living with your very own outdoor spa experience? Kernow Springs, one of the south-west’s leading suppliers of wood-fired hot tubs, are also offering the ultimate package. hether in your garden, a field or in the woods, Kernow Springs can provide spas for any location. Simply wander outside and your Wild Spa experience awaits. The installation can include wood-fired hot tubs, wood-fired barrel saunas with separate changing rooms and off grid hot showers. The team can even craft a traditional Scandinavian cold ‘drench’ bucket for the complete, authentic experience. Owner Martin Dean tells us: “Being handcrafted from the finest timbers mean they look stunning and can really complement the ambiance and look of your garden, blending into the natural environment seamlessly.” What’s more, being heated by burning wood means that no electricity is required, not to mention there are no noisy pumps and only minimal water treatment necessary,

making them a more natural choice than their plastic, chlorinated counterparts. A permanent Wild Spa installation can add value to your home or help with year round appeal for your holiday let. Chris and Annie of Calstock have not looked back since they had their woodland spa installed and told us: “We spotted the delightful Kernow Springs in an advert in Cornwall Living and early discussions with Martin led to our very own Wild Spa installation. We can’t praise the service enough and the end product is a dream come true!” To turn your dream of a private, relaxing Wild Spa into a reality, with a natural and truly beautiful product, be sure to contact the Kernow Springs team today. If you’d like to see these beautiful tubs in action, visit the showroom at Padstow’s Trevisker Garden Center. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

For an interior that promises to stand the test of time, natural stone is the perfect solution.   ABOVE The diversity of available colours may well surprise you

A

fter the recent lockdown, when many of us had no choice but to stay at home, more than ever realised just how much their homes were in need of updating. One thing that can really bring out the best of our spaces here in Cornwall is incorporating natural stone into our interiors re ecting the natural geology that surrounds us here in the Duchy. The marbling of stone is entrancing; there’s something quite mysterious about the natural patterns, and hours can be lost just admiring them, fathoming the process that caused them to be. There is one stellar Cornish business that understands this – Kernow Stone. Cornwall’s leading provider of natural stone, Kernow Stone’s parent company, Martin and Sons, was founded in 1909, and now sees the fourth and fifth generation of the artin family working together towards the fabrication of natural stone. So how can they help you? With more than two decades’ experience in the industry, with thousands of happy customers across the West Country, Kernow Stone can supply, manufacture and install granite and quartz worktops, as well as natural stone wall and oor tiles, house signs, slate sills and much more. Having enjoyed great success over the past 20 years, the Martin family has been able to make significant investment in both the company workforce and machinery in recent times,

allowing them to serve more clients than ever. In fact, such is their success that last year they were able to make an exciting move to a new premises on Dudnance Lane, Redruth – a new site that allows them more factory space, a bigger showroom and, crucially, a more central and prominent location, making it easier than ever for you to see exactly what they can do for you and your home. This fantastic business has trading partners all over the world, including Brazil, India, Spain and Italy, from which it imports the most incredible natural materials. “This means that we not only offer some of the finest stone products on the market, explains Rob Martin, “but also that we make what may once have seemed a pipedream an affordable reality for anyone embarking on a home improvement pro ect. In short, if you want to ensure a look in your home that’s naturally timeless – one that’s unlikely to lose its charm in years to come – a visit to the new Kernow Stone premises in edruth is most definitely in order

n this body of work Jackson visits the relics of prehistoric Cornwall and captures the county’s extraordinary range of ancient monuments with a new series of paintings and sculpture. The landscape is full of these monuments, some are obvious and picturesque – a stone circle – while others are incongruous; hidden and overlooked despite their size and historical significance, cut-off and smothered by dual-carriageways, roundabouts and car dealerships. These monuments are an important and integral part of the Cornish landscape and its culture. They are a piece of Cornish heritage. Jackson comments: “These are extraordinary places to visit, to draw and to paint. As the eye, the hand, or the feet follow the features, the mind also wanders, trying to find meaning and explanation.” A Prehistoric Cornwall is displayed beautifully within the award-winning Jackson Foundation gallery, an expansive carbon-positive, ex-industrial building tucked away down a side street of the charming post-mining community of St Just-in-Penwith. Massive white walls and exposed black steel allow Jackson’s canvasses, as monumental as they are in their own right, space to breathe, and the impressive 300 square metres of polished concrete oorspace allow the viewer to immerse themselves in the artwork from a distance or inspect the minute detail up close.

For this show, the Jackson Foundation has joined with the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership, who will be using the upstairs gallery space to share their work in conserving Cornwall’s protected landscape so that it remains Cornwall’s key asset, valued by local people and visitors alike. The Jackson Foundation continues to work to become a positive force for change. The gallery is free to visit and provides local employment, raising awareness and funds for groups working to protect the environment and giving back to a community that has been home to the to the Jackson family for nearly thirty years.

FOLLOW

your heart

A new children’s book tells the touching story of capturing the perfect wave in Cornwall.

I

READ

DISCOVER MORE Coral and the Cornish Heart is available to buy from Waves Surf Art galleries in Porthleven and Falmouth or online at www.wavesgallery.co.uk

n an age where there is a danger that illustrated children’s books will be cast aside in favour of images on tablets and that the reading of bedtime stories is being taken over by digital home assistants, it’s with sheer delight that we discovered a new children’s book being published, right here in Cornwall Living Living’s home village of Porthleven. As print publishers ourselves, we are already self-confessed lovers of ink on paper, but we think you and your children can’t fail to be enticed by this gentle tale of discovery. The book’s main character is Mikey. In real life Mikey, aka Mike Lacey, is one of Cornwall’s leading surf art photographers. His passion for Cornwall and nature is revealed in his diverse portfolio of ocean photography that can be seen displayed in his two galleries in Porthleven and Falmouth. It was one photograph in particular though, a perfect heart caught in a breaking wave the night before his first child was born, that inspired him and his wife to create their first children’s book. A true story, Coral and the Cornish Heart begins with the news that Mikey and his wife are going to have a baby. As with many new fathers, Mikey is a little nervous and takes

to his beloved ocean with his camera to ask his underwater friends Ninja Crab Nina and Sophie the Seal for their advice. The book then follows Mikey’s journey before the baby is born, in search of the perfect picture. Which he does, the day before his daughter Coral is born! We wouldn’t want to spoil your enjoyment so you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens next. It is a tale told from the heart. Written by Mike’s wife Lisa, the prose is gentle and lyrical, addressing those fears that nearly all new dads experience before their first born arrives. The book is lovingly illustrated by Hermione Rose (@hermioneroseillustration) cleverly combined with Mike’s ocean photography. The style is reminiscent of picture postcards bought as a child to send to Granny, evoking memories of beach days and bedtimes stories, salty hair and sandy toes.

WITH A VIEW Open to guests and non-residents alike, delicious Cornish cuisine lies at the heart of the Fowey Hall Hotel.

P

erched above the Fowey estuary, the Fowey Hall Hotel is the perfect base for a holiday, whether you’re hoping to take to the coast, walk atop the cliffs, or sink into the outside hot tub and soak up the views of the water below. Be it rest and relaxation, or excitement and adventure that you’re looking for, you’ll find it all here. However you spend your holiday, there’s nothing quite like fresh sea air to instil a hearty appetite. Fortunately, Fowey Hall Head Chef, Wesley Pratt, has more than 20 years’ experience working in the kitchens of luxury hotels and local restaurants. What’s more, being a parent himself, he knows how to cater for the foodie demands of the whole family! The Fowey Hall restaurant has fantastic relationships with local suppliers, meaning that only the freshest and most avoursome ingredients find their way onto Wesley’s menus. Seafood is sourced from local business, Fish for Thought; eggs are laid locally by free-range hens, and award-winning artisan ice cream comes from Treleavens, churned at Tretoil Farm in the north Cornish countryside. The best part is that you needn’t be a guest to enjoy the Fowey Hall’s foodie fare.

Perhaps you’re visiting Fowey for the day and want to make a pit stop, to refuel for the rest of your day’s adventures? If so, the hotel offers casual and informal light bites, and with an all day dining menu to choose from at your leisure, Wesley and the team can provide you and yours with a delicious plateful at any time of day. Alternatively, if you fancy indulging in one of the nation's favourite foodie traditions – afternoon tea – the Fowey Hall offering is seriously special. With handmade sandwiches and scones, sweet treats and loose-leaf teas, available until 30th September, you can indulge in a Beatrix Potter inspired afternoon tea that’s perfect for kids and adults alike. With excellent Cornish cuisine at the heart of what it does, whether you’re planning a Cornish break or simply popping in to refuel on your day of exploring, the Fowey Hall Hotel comes highly recommended.

CHARITY |

IT’S ALL ABOUT

THE BEDS Healthcare charity, Cornwall Hospice Care is planning for the future with the support of the people from the Duchy.

BELOW Gina Starnes, Clinical Director

C

ornwall Hospice Care has kept its two hospices, Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle, open 24/7 throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, much to the relief of the 144 families facing terminal illnesses whose relatives have been admitted since March. “We provide Cornwall with 20 end-of-life and specialist palliative care beds and I very much hope we can not only maintain this, but open more in the future,” says Gina Starnes, Clinical Director. “We continue to admit those patients who need our services and to support their families at a difficult time, which has been compounded by Coronavirus. Our key clinical workers have been amazing, providing specialist care and being vigilant in their own lives to protect against the virus. In keeping our hospices open we’ve been able to support our community colleagues and our wider health and social care communities in Cornwall.” “We have admitted more patients from the community, working with our GP colleagues, but it’s been a challenge for everyone. We’ve had to introduce strict processes to keep everyone safe from Covid and we’ve had to enforce tougher visiting rules, whilst at the

same time making sure that patients and their families can be together at the end of life.” 62 patients have been discharged during the pandemic, the majority back to their own homes. The thank you messages have been humbling. One family wrote: t was a difficult time, more so because of the restrictions due to Covid, but it was made bearable by the wonderful team at the hospice. You all have to deal with an incredibly difficult time for patients and families, but we are in awe of your compassion, professionalism and kindness.” Now, Gina says, it’s about planning for the future. “We want to continue to develop our services and keep our doors open and we’ll do that by following government guidance and staying alert. It’s important we strive to keep our beds open because it’s about accessibility for any patient who needs us. However, that’s going to be a huge challenge and we’ll continue to rely on the extraordinary support of the people of Cornwall.”

dd a global pandemic, lockdown restrictions, furlough, redundancy and home-schooling into the mix, and it becomes even more of a challenge. ith the now officially declared as being in recession, plus rising unemployment figures, starting a new business in times like these is not ideal. However, many Outset Cornwall clients would disagree, as they’ve used their time in lockdown to develop their ideas, build their businesses and pursue their dreams of becoming their own boss. This was certainly the case for Boscastlebased product designer Andrew Davey, who was made redundant earlier this year after 15 years of working for his employer. “I’d wanted to start my own business for a while, but I’d never found the time to really focus on it, so this felt like the perfect opportunity,” says Andrew. “After reading great reviews online, I signed up for Outset’s business start-up sessions which really helped focus my ideas, rationalise my plans and take the first steps in setting up my new business.” As the father of an active toddler with extensive experience in designing outdoor play areas and equipment, the move into making his own range of children’s activity toys was an obvious one. natural materials that would otherwise have gone to landfill. With a small family, no childcare and being furloughed from his part-time job, Andrew had to make working on his new business a lower priority when the UK went into lockdown. But thanks to his partner’s support, Andrew managed to spend evenings and occasional afternoons building his website and developing product designs, aiming to launch his products in time for Christmas. Andrew says: “The last few months have been seriously challenging for everyone and keeping positive about setting up a new venture has been difficult at times. “Outset has been great though,” he continues, “their sessions always boost my confidence and my focus, which has really helped keep things on track. During the embryonic phase of starting a business, it sometimes seems like it doesn’t really exist, so being part of a community, exploring ideas and discussing progress really helps bring it back into reality.” Another Outset client who used the situation to focus and formulate her plans is Sophie Tilston. Balancing a busy home life, home-schooling three children and working part-time meant Sophie had never managed to get started on her plans, until the pandemic hit, and lockdown gave her some much-needed time and space to think. “I’ve always experimented with printing my own designs and products, and dreamed of running my own business,” says Sophie. “For nearly four years I attended one or two craft fairs a year with some of my designs, but I was only really testing the waters. Customer feedback was always really positive, so when lockdown hit, I thought ‘I’ve just got to get started properly with this’. A friend of mine recommended Outset Cornwall, so I signed up.”

Thanks to Outset delivering everything online, giving people exibility to fit sessions and one-to-ones around family, work and other commitments, Sophie completed the business start-up programme and launched her new business. Using the array of skills she gained from her textile design degree and career background in product design and buying, Sophie started her own designer homeware company from her studio in Falmouth, handmaking and printing eclectic homeware and fashion accessories in beautiful patterns, including lampshades, tea towels, greetings cards and mugs, selling them online via her website and Etsy shop. “When you’re a parent you’re always thinking ‘How can I maximise this time, while they’re asleep?’ You get used to stopstarting jobs, multi-tasking and getting the most out of every single minute of the day,” says Sophie. “I’d been working from home for a while and gotten used to working around the children and in the evenings. Now, running my own business gives me the freedom to work whenever I choose.” If you have an idea for a business and dream of being your own boss, contact Outset Cornwall and start making it a reality.

ild Tipi, Cornwall was set up in 2017 by husband and wife team Sam and Tim Moore. nderstanding how beneficial being immersed in nature can be for themselves and their family, their desire has always been to give this to others in a meaningful and sustainable way. Although Wild Tipi is renowned for breathtaking weddings and events, their true driving force was to use their iant at Tipis as nurturing and inspiring wild spaces for community pro ects. After some fantastic school-based collaborations as part of the oom to row pro ect with the haracter Tree , the ock ool ro ect and their successful ild omen ays, ild Tipi launched their first social enterprise, The Soul Tent Initiative CIC, earlier this year. The Soul Tent nitiative is a social enterprise, which aims to harness the healing power of an immersion in nature and to bring people together to find community and respite. estled in the wilds of the ornish countryside in secret locations, The Soul Tent nitiative offers days to support mental well-being and growth. elping to fund community pro ects, The Soul Tent Initiative offers a fresh take on corporate well-being days for businesses across the county and beyond. As we navigate these unchartered waters postovid, Sam explains, we recognised that it is more important than ever for businesses to bring their staff together in a safe and meaningful way.
