News & views Introducing Hearing Services Cornwall

Family fun, come rain or shine! Set within Pentewan Sands Holiday Park, overlooking the beach, the Seahorse is a small leisure complex with something for all the family, whatever the weather. For younger children there is a two-tier soft play area with all the usual ball pools, slides and padded climbing frames. As well as providing all weather entertainment the Seahorse has a relaxed café and restaurant with fantastic views over the beach and Mevagissey Bay. When the time is right, The Seahorse will be open to everyone, all year round and will also be available for hire for private functions, weddings and other events, so if you’re laying plans for more promising times ahead, be sure to add a trip to your itinerary!

News & views Bring your kitchen back to life At Kitchen Kit, the team specialises in creating dream kitchens for their clients, with a wealth of experience and an impressive offering of state-of-theart innovations to back it up. ‘AntiBAK’ is a fine example – a cuttingedge anti-bacterial finish from Ballerina Küchen. Available across six different styles, ‘Declaring war on bacteria and viruses’ is the key philosophy that underpins this range, which is made from thermoset-hardened melamine materials that require only standard household cleaning to maintain them. Other examples include the impressive NikolaTesla Switch induction hob from Elica – a fully integrated, all-in-one hob and extraction system with a central fan

Farm to fork Set facing the Atlantic near Bude, north Cornwall, the Chapman family’s 500 acres of culm grassland is a diverse eco-system of plants and animals, managed by careful grazing of their herd of Pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle. Cornwall is renowned for the quality of its locally grown, caught and reared produce, and the Chapman’s herd is a prime example of why that is! Raised

that guarantees high performance whilst remaining quiet and energy efficient. Or, if you like to ‘grow your own’, a smart new product called ‘Backlight’ combines grow lights with specially designed wooden boxes and planting pots to allow you to cultivate your own indoor garden, quite literally bringing your kitchen to life! naturally on a 100% grass diet, their beef contains higher levels of Omega 3 and has a lower carbon footprint than most conventionally raised beef. What’s more, it is authenticated and graded ‘Prime’ by the GoodBeef Index due to the exceptional marbling and taste. In short, it’s proper beef from a proper Cornish farm. Available to order online, with deliveries directly from the farm to your door, it comes very highly recommended! For more information visit www.properbeef.co.uk

Tired of mending fences? With the latest government announcement, there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel, and with the warmer weather just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start considering improvements or renovations in the garden. Such considerations often lead us to look to our fences, and whether those currently in place are really up to the job. Wooden fences, for example, often suffer during the cold, windy and rainy months and need a lot of upkeep to maintain their allure. ColourFence is a great alternative to traditional wooden fencing, as it doesn’t require any maintenance for 25 years, looks beautiful with a different range of colours and combinations, and most importantly, keeps your garden safe and stylish. If you want to know more, why not give the team a call to arrange a free noobligation quote and site survey? For more information call 01637 222578 or visit www.colourfencecornwall.co.uk

Thinking of letting your holiday home? We know that your holiday home is just that – a home. That’s why our local team is dedicated to managing your property with the same care and attention you would – and with tailored services to suit your needs, you can be as involved as you like.

Recognised by Cycling Weekly as one of ‘20 of the best British Sportives to ride’, there are routes for everybody, from the complete beginner to the hardened cyclist who likes a challenge. Taking place on Sunday 18th July, the event that was cancelled last year as a result of the pandemic, is being sponsored by Clive Mitchell Cycles and offers four routes; Extreme (104 miles), Epic (71 miles), Challenge (44 miles) and Inspire (17 miles). Oli Hoare is the event organiser: “All the routes are designed to provide enjoyable and safe cycling in spectacular scenery, starting and finishing at the magnificent Prideaux Place in Padstow. Situated just a mile up the road from Land’s End, opposite the First & Last Inn, Sennen, The Saddle and Stablerooms is the perfect getaway for the whole family – just the ticket for those of you who can’t wait to escape to Cornwall just as soon as you’re allowed! With a number of attractions all within easy reach, including the culturally iconic Minack Theatre, endless dramatic coastal landscapes and beaches, and of course, Land’s End, this is the perfect base from which to explore south west Cornwall. Originally built as a stable next to the pub – once frequented by smugglers from the local area – the building has since been converted into three studio rooms and a family apartment, each thoughtfully designed to reflect the building’s original, historic character. The Saddle Room apartment is ideal for families and groups of friends (up to six), with two super king-sized bedrooms, an open-plan living space, plus a sun terrace and stunning private gardens. The Stableroom Studios, meanwhile, are ideal for the traveller

seeking an escape with all the comforts of home. Perfect for couples, it features a super king-sized (or twin) bed with an en-suite bathroom, plus a kitchenette and an outdoor patio area, perfect for afternoons spent sipping a bottle of something chilled in the sun. Depending on your needs, you can choose to book either an apartment with a private garden, or one of three double bedrooms. For extended families, there’s also the option to hire the entire property, allowing for separate sleeping for various members of your wider family. Whatever you decide, if you’re in need of a comfortable base from which to explore the wild and rugged Penwith peninsula, look no further than The Saddle and Stablerooms. Keep your cool with AirTemp

Industrial Services

Milestone reached by trans-Atlantic yachtsman, Bob Kerr

Founded in 2018, AirTemp Industrial Services has been at the forefront of the refrigeration industry every since. Crewed by a team of engineers with decades of experience between them, working at all levels of the industry – from catering to large-scale plants in the Royal Navy Auxiliary Fleet – AirTemp is dedicated to providing you with the best solutions for your needs. It could be a large scale blast freezer, an industrial catering refrigerator, or an air conditioning unit. Whatever your business, be it catering or in the marine sector, whether you’re looking for a professional installation team for your new refrigeration system, or a company you can rely on to handle the maintenance, servicing and repairs of your equipment – new or old – then why not contact the experts at AirTemp Industrial Services? For more information call 07497 086876 or visit www.airtempindustrialservices.com

Yachting enthusiast Bob Kerr knows all about milestones having twice sailed across the mighty Atlantic ocean.

Bob, who is pictured raising a glass to the conservatory milestone success with members of the team.

Now he is celebrating one much closer to home with the thousandth conservatory installation for the team at Rodda and Hocking of Camborne.

A sailing enthusiast all his life, Bob first crossed the Atlantic in his racing yacht Serefe back in 2003, from Southampton to the Canary Islands and across to St Lucia in the Caribbean. Taking just 21 days, the voyage was the subject of a Channel 4 documentary. His second crossing from the Cape Verde islands to Antigua in 2010 was completed in just 18 days!

Bob, who has been in the double-glazing business for 40 years, moved from Somerset to acquire the long-established Camborne firm back in 2009 at the height of the recession. Despite the difficulties of the times, he battled on through initial financial stormy waters to reach a two million pounds annual turnover. Then, aged 72, and seeking a slightly quieter life, he partnered Rodda and Hocking up with leading south west double glazing manufacturer Britannia Windows, while continuing to run the day to day operation. “This business is in my blood and I can’t think what I would do if I retired,” says

Now, having sold his yacht and come ashore, Bob has a lifetime of amazing sailing memories to look back on. But it’s not all history, and his recent achievement at the helm of 1,000 conservatory installations is evidence enough that he only means to continue reaching more milestones. Looking for the real Cornish experience? It’s fair to say that we’re all excited to see the back of another lockdown, and Louise West, founder of Experience Cornwall Tours, is no exception. Louise would usually be busy at this time of year showing visitors around Cornwall’s top attractions and beauty spots. Instead, she has enjoyed writing virtual tour blogs for hotel providers, providing a tantalising preview into what future guests can expect when they are once again allowed to visit our beloved county. This includes the coming of the dazzling pink sea thrift (pictured), a gorgeous wildflower that blooms each spring atop the cliffs of Cornwall.

Did you manage to de-clutter and get organised during the lockdown? Professional organiser and owner of Kewniek, Shelly Moss says: “Our enquiries during lockdown have been from people who thought they should have sorted things during lockdown. However, our clients are actually those who have continued to be busy with work, home-schooling, and everyone else who thought they could follow a handy tips video or a simple hack and now feel like they’ve failed.”

As we approach the warmer months, Louise is excited to announce that, as well as opening up for tours once restrictions allow, she has also been asked to provide transport for this year’s

G7 summit in St Ives – an exciting opportunity, and testament to the advanced driving skills that Louise brings to each and every tour of the Duchy. For more information call 01872 396143 or visit www.experiencecornwalltours.co.uk

“Even if you don’t manage it,” finishes Shelly, “don’t beat yourself up!” Kewniek will be back to help people in their homes and businesses after lockdown, so why not get in touch now and start making plans to de-clutter yours?

Following the new guidelines (all being well), UpperDeck will be opening for outside drinking and dining from April 14th. It has been a long winter and UpperDeck is incredibly excited to welcome back old faces and new, ready to help you blow the cobwebs away and gratefully welcome in spring with a refreshing drink out on the terrace. Perfect alongside a beer in the sunshine, a new tailored menu features the best fresh, locally sourced produce, still featuring the firm favourites.

There have been so many missed events and celebrations over the last year, and as soon as restrictions allow, UpperDeck is the perfect place to make up for them!

New exhibition launched at The Jackson Foundation Gallery The Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just, returns to its roots this spring with Wheat: From Plough to Plate, the latest exhibition from internationally acclaimed artist Kurt Jackson. The building that now houses the gallery was once an integral part of Warrens Bakery, the oldest pasty makers in Cornwall. From here, forklift trucks darted back and forth taking their loads to the bakery up the road, where the sweet aromas of baking

bread and cakes, sausage rolls and pasties emanated, perfuming the town, filling the streets. In this exhibition, Kurt Jackson traces the journey of a staple crop – wheat – from ‘field to fork’, exploring how it has shaped the landscape (and our waistlines) in a range of media spanning paint, sculpture, poetry and film. Bespoke creations, held eternally “Home – the story of who we are and a collection of all we love.” This is the quote lovingly inlaid into the pictured tile, created by Mel Chambers of Alchemy Tiles. Alchemy is defined as ‘any seemingly magical process of transmuting ordinary materials into something of true merit’, and whether it’s an individual tile you’re looking for, or a bespoke solution for your kitchen, bathroom of fireplace, Mel’s handmade pieces certainly reflect that.

Each piece is made using ancient 13th century inlay techniques, whereby Mel individually hand carves – rather than paints – inspiring images and favourite quotes into beautiful, bespoke and unique creations. ur homes are something we should all be proud of. At least, in my opinion, they should be! This is particularly true in light of the many months we’ve all spent unable to venture far beyond those same four walls, and as national restrictions look set to slowly ease and our freedom restored to once more spend time with our nearest and dearest, I, at least, cannot wait to welcome friends and family into our humble abode for a long-overdue catch up. This is all very exciting, but having spent so much time at home over the last year, it’s highly likely that there are parts of our homes – perhaps entire rooms – that we’ve noticed could use some ‘TLC’. It could be the need for a new coat of paint in the hallway, some new furniture to replace old and abused seating in the living room, or for those who have ‘had it up to here’ with their tired and outdated interiors, it could be a complete home makeover. It needn’t necessarily be limited to the insides of our homes, either. The lockdown of March last year brought with it some incredible weather, which meant that we could at least enjoy some time outside, but just the same as with our interiors, the more time we spend in the garden, the more things we naturally notice that could do with just a little bit of love.

For these reasons, I’ve decided to take a long hard look at my own home and the things we’ve decided to upgrade, fix, or out and out replace – to inspire some questions for two of Cornwall’s leading interior (and exterior) specialists, the answers to which, I hope, will help inspire you to get to work on your own home project. First, I speak to Ali Cary, owner and founder of Truro’s The Cotton Mills Design House. As inspiration for your own postlockdown interior makeover, Ali unveils a recent project that she and the team undertook for a client in their beautiful Cornish home. The client initially approached The Cotton Mills to help achieve an uncluttered interior. Without wanting to be shy in their use of colour, they nevertheless wished to keep the palette contemporary. In short, says Ali: "They didn’t want to complicate it by adding too much to the mix. "They understood that the open-plan living space meant they needed to be a bit bold and use a colour they liked, a colour which was strong enough for such a large area," continues Ali. "Their stunning charcoal grey velvet sofa needed some contrast, so we used some dark navy fabric to complement the room and perfectly offset the grey. The light-coloured floor was a great backdrop to the navy and white embroidered curtains, giving relief to the dark navy fabric and also picking up on the light floor tiles." Ali and The Cotton Mills also used a complementary colour for the snug – a warm golden yellow which, as Ali puts it, “naturally complemented the main open-plan area while still creating that ‘snug’ feeling.” As we move upstairs I learn that Ali’s clients decided to maintain the bedrooms’ coastal theme by using washed-out linens. This is an important point: often, it is not necessary to completely change the look of a room. In this case, Ali tells me that: "The guest bedrooms are opposite each other, and we came to the conclusion that

rather than change the style of the fabric, we would use the same design but in a different colour." Similarly, the main bedroom already had a gorgeous bluebell headboard, so Ali and the team built the room’s new scheme around it. "A border in a similar colour to the headboard was added to the curtains," Ali explains, "giving the room a seamless flow. The white shutters and a light-coloured love seat, meanwhile, give some contrast and texture to the scheme." This project is typical of those which Ali and The Cotton Mills team are regularly asked to help with. By employing a proven process that takes you from an initial plan ‘on paper’ all the way through to picking out your favourite colours, choosing whether to build on existing features, and finally settling on the perfect interior scheme, The Cotton Mills can help with every interior challenge. If you’re stuck for ideas, why not give them a call? Next, I speak to Zowie Brooks of Heart, Smoke & Soal, specialists in creative outdoor living. Now, I have to admit that outdoor cooking has, for a long time, been a great love of mine. Growing up, there was something about the ‘back to basics’ nature of a simple seaside barbeque with friends, that instilled in me a lifetime affection for food eaten al fresco. And as I’ve grown up, having been fortunate enough to buy a house with my partner here in Cornwall, this passion (or, depending on who you ask, obsession) has

evolved into a dream of one day installing my own outdoor kitchen. With that in mind, it was with great interest (and much salivation) that I first stumbled across the range of outdoor living products on offer through Heart, Smoke & Soal. Setting aside my own bias, I first ask Zowie about the benefits of outdoor cooking – of ‘bringing the inside out’. During the current climate, she tells me that more and more have discovered the pleasures of cooking at home, and explains that she, herself, has been able to try out different recipes and dishes that she would usually only eat out in restaurants. What’s more, says Zowie: “Having the time to cook something outside gives you that Hygge feeling.” ‘Hygge’ is a Scandinavian term that, in its simplest terms, refers to a state of wellbeing, and it’s one that can be applied anywhere – inside or out. “I think the past 12 months have brought our gardens to the forefront of our minds when it comes to what we can do at home,” says Zowie. “Cooking outdoors doesn’t have to be something for special occasions, or just the odd weekend; it is there to be enjoyed all year round, and we want to encourage people to get out there and cook something up. I think there is something about being out in the fresh air whilst eating, cooking and having a drink – having time to yourself to relax to just to enjoy where you are in the moment.” That, if you are still unsure, is Hygge! So, if you love to cook and want to combine your passion with time spent in your garden, where should you start? “This can vary,” explains Zowie. “Some or our customers have tried different barbeques – maybe a smoker, a Tandoori oven, or a grill – and want to focus on putting this into long-term equipment in the form of a built-in kitchen feature. Others may not necessarily want an outdoor kitchen, instead opting for a bar, or perhaps a gazebo to cover their spa.” Interestingly though, as outdoor dining and the installation of outdoor kitchens begins to trend here in the UK – already being extremely popular in America and Europe

– Zowie tells me that some equipment brands can actually add value to your home, explaining that “a barbeque kitchen may not be the obvious upgrade for a home, but it’s certainly a trend that is here to stay!” With a vast selection of equipment and accessories from world-leading brands, it’s clear that you’ll find what you’re looking for through companies like Heart, Smoke & Soal, but some – me included – may be wondering whether you need to have lots of outdoor space to work with. Zowie puts my mind at ease, explaining: “No, you don’t need a lot of space. It could be a veranda or a small patio; there are lots of different options, from built-in hardstanding kitchens, to modular units.” In fact, there is so much that can be done with the brands available to you that you’re sure to find a solution for your garden. Hoping to build your own dream home by the sea? If so, As a top tip for those with smaller gardens Woodford Architecture just might be able to help. Head (in answer to a question loaded with my own to the Cornwall Living TV page to find out more... interests) Zowie suggests thinking about how www.cornwall-living-tv.co.uk many people you entertain and how often. “This will help you gauge what equipment you need for your outdoor space. Also, how do you like to cook? Some people prefer solid fuels, others prefer the convenience of gas. Some even LIFEST YLE prefer multiple appliances, so they may have a solid-fuel grill and a gas pizza oven, so different types of food can be cooked depending on mood and guests.” The short answer, is that there are no real ‘hard and fast’ rules. It’s entirely down to your answer to a very simple question: how do you want to use your garden? ituated in private landscaped grounds with an electronic gated entrance, this stunning Padstow home features a heated pool, a hot tub, a private balcony and gorgeous mature gardens, making time spent at home a genuine pleasure. Presented in excellent order, this Edwardian mansion is truly private, away from public view, yet within easy walking distance of the bustling fishing port of Padstow and the independent (and celebrity-owned) restaurants that abound there. Inside, the home retains many of the period features, including high ceilings, large rooms, dado panelling, coving, and even some stained glass windows. And yet, the accommodation nevertheless feels distinctly contemporary. A stylish and modern kitchen, for instance, features fabulous cabinetry with natural stone worktops. Perfect for those who need plenty of cooking space for those sunny days spent entertaining, it includes a Neff double oven, a three-door gas Aga (a lovely, warming feature) and useful integrated appliances including a dishwasher. In all there are four bedrooms, all accessed via the elegant wide staircase on the first floor. Here, as well as a large, wonderfully appointed family bathroom, and access to the first floor sun deck, you’ll find that two of the bedrooms boast their own en-suite shower rooms, including the principle bedroom, which also comes with a separate dressing room.

Accessed by a sweeping driveway and wrought iron gates, outside there is a large double garage and a good size lean-to log store, plus parking for up to five cars, with traditional Cornish stone walls. The gardens surround the home, with a variety of trees and planting, plus stunning views from all aspects, offering those who love spending time outdoors the ultimate haven in which to do so. They also include a secluded hot tub and an air source heat pump-heated swimming pool, as well as a detached slatehung outbuilding offering room for changing and storage. Add to all of this a kitchen garden with greenhouse, a decked area and a sun terrace, and for those who have been thinking about improving their at-home lifestyle in the wake of the recent lockdown, Cartrea could well be a dream come true.

THE MILL A stunning conversion of a 19th century mill, in an outstanding rural position.

INFORMATION Stunning conversion of 19th century mill Three bedrooms Outstanding rural position Amenities including swimming pool, tennis court, golf course and entertainment outbuildings Two acres of gardens and grounds

O

ccupying two acres of landscaped gardens and amenities, close to the north Cornish coast, The Mill boasts a heated swimming pool with shower and changing facilities, an all-weather tennis court/five-a-side football pitch, a nine-hole golf course, plus a range of entertainment outbuildings. Impressive right? Well, as you head inside, it only gets better. Here, there’s an immense sense of style and character, testament to the home’s origins as a 19th century mill, and a juxtaposition of stonework and wooden beams with an artistic and eclectic style of décor makes for a truly wonderful living space. Into the well-fitted kitchen and you’ll continue to find plenty of character features, along with plenty of room for cooking with the area’s famed abundance of locally grown produce. A breakfast bar makes the space as social as it is functional, perfect for entertaining. The accommodation splits across three floors. On the ground level, as well as the kitchen, you’ll find a cosy TV/snug room, accessed via a gorgeous stone arch. Upstairs to the first floor, where there is yet more exposed stonework and fabulous wood panelling, you’ll find an exquisite master suite, featuring a roll top bath and walk-in shower. Across the landing, there is also the hugely impressive ‘winter lounge’, opening directly out onto the raised landscape

gardens. With two levels, this room is divided by a large wood-burning stove, with characterful beams running high above. On the top floor is where you’ll find the final two bedrooms, each with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams and sharing between them a further stylish bath and shower room. On the edge of the coveted village of St Mawgan, this exemplary home offers the kind of lifestyle that many of us have been left dreaming of after the last few months. It’s also in prime position to capitalise on everything the north coast has to offer, from its array of highly acclaimed restaurants, to its endless miles of stunning coastal walks. It really does need seeing to be believed.

Wonderfully proportioned, with a large bespoke kitchen, open-plan living spaces and four large bedrooms, not to mention a games room and an integral double garage, this property also enjoys fabulous south-facing gardens, with a sunny patio that’s perfect for outdoor dining. Finally, we come to The Dune Houses. Gorgeous from the outside in thanks to a

mixture of stone and timber finishes; built with cutting edge energy efficiency, and each providing no fewer than four en-suite bedrooms, this trio of homes meets, and surpasses, the expectations of even the most modern of buyers. With plush highend kitchens, underfloor air-source heating and cosy fireplaces to boot, living spaces are at once comfortable, spacious and exceptionally versatile. Reversed layouts see kitchens and living spaces on the top floors, capitalising on the stunning ocean views, whilst the ground floors each house a games room, one of the bedrooms and a large double garage. The remainder of the bedrooms are found on the middle floors. The real icing on the cake, however, has to be the private balconies on each of the top two levels, perfect for sipping sundowners after a day spent on the nearby sands of Perranporth. hen we step back and look at our homes, any number of improvements can spring to mind. It could be new carpets or giving the spare bedroom a lick of paint so it keeps up with the aesthetic of the rest of the house, but one of the biggest improvements we can make – and one that often makes the biggest difference to time spent in the household – is in our kitchens. Fortunately, thanks to Dream Doors in Truro, achieving a kitchen look that matches the rest of your home could be a whole lot easier, and cheaper, than you think! Indeed, you would be surprised to see just how much difference simply replacing your doors can make to the hub of your home. Dream Doors owner Matt Jones tells us: “The thing that sets us apart is that our UK manufactured doors are made-to-measure, so you can get new doors to fit your existing units and inject a new lease of life into your current kitchen.” As you enter the Truro showroom, you find yourself immersed in a huge range of styles and materials, with thousands of possible combinations, and it’s really quite comforting to know that whatever style and combination you choose, Matt and the team can fit your new doors to the unique measurements of your kitchen (or bathroom!). But it’s not just the supply service that makes this an opportunity to the discerning home improver. Dream Doors also have a qualified team of approved local fitters, who are able to fit your project around your busy schedule – perfect whether you're busy with work or are refitting a room in a second home and are unable to travel to Cornwall. As Matt tells us: “We take care of everything from design to completion. We can manage the whole process: we have a team of local craftsmen on hand to custom build your new fittings and we always ensure they’re completed to the highest standards, just as if we’re working on our own homes.”

So, if your kitchen or bathroom is holding the rest of your home back and you’ve decided it’s time you achieved that ‘boxfresh’ feel, be sure to contact Matt and the team and see how they can meet your brief and, more importantly, your budget!

THE THRILL

OF THE GRILL As days lengthen and the air warms, now’s the time to be planning your ultimate, outdoor cooking experience. ABOVE  The very epitome of outdoor living luxury, Fire Magic offers a premium range of outdoor kitchens, barbeques and accessories RIGHT  Alfa is the worldwide leader in manufacturing residential wood and gas-fired ovens for gardens and kitchens

W

ho doesn’t love that first smell of something cooking outside on the coals? There’s something so evocative about the smell of wood smoke combined with juicy meat aromas mixed with fresh herbs. I think it goes for all of us, if your neighbours are having a barbeque outside as soon as the smell reaches you it invokes the feeling of being outside and cooking in the fresh air; an experience like no other. Your own outdoor cooking experience doesn’t need to be complicated to be enjoyable. It could be grilling over hot coals, a pizza cooked in a woodfired oven or simply toasting some marshmallows over a fire pit. Outdoor cooking doesn’t need to be technically difficult – the simplest of things can be very rewarding. However, it may be that you are looking for a larger scale outdoor kitchen and with so many ways to cook outside these days, it can be hard to navigate the myriad products on offer. We spoke to outdoor kitchen and cooking expert, Zowie Brooks for some advice and on choosing the right equipment: “Our team at Heart Smoke & Soal has a huge understanding about how the fusion of both indoors and outdoors has to work together when creating an outdoor kitchen. The brands that we sell, have been hand-selected and chosen by us, based on our own outdoor cooking experiences. When investing in any outdoor cooking equipment it’s essential that it’s durable and a pleasure to use, and so the products that we stock are chosen for their premium craftmanship and quality.”

Heart, Smoke & Soal offers a range of products that can take you from a simple barbeque or fire bowl, right through to a full outdoor kitchen and entertaining area, complete with worktops, sink, fridge and a protective canopy or gazebo. With a background in the plumbing and building industry, this means that they can also install the products, meaning all you have to do is sit back and plan your perfect al-fresco menu. And it’s not just domestic outdoor kitchens that the team are experienced in as Zowie explains: “The hospitality market is also a huge growing sector for us, with so many businesses looking at al-fresco dining as well as cooking outside. We are finding that more hotels, pubs and restaurants are taking this direction. Never has it been so important to find a safe way to cater during this current time.” Now is the ideal time to be looking at your outdoor cooking equipment and designs in order to get the most from this year in terms of use. So, don’t delay, get grilling!

GOING

We discover how OPC Energy Ltd can help anybody considering a renewable energy solution for their home or business.

T

DID YOU KNOW? Homeowners and landlords in England can apply for a voucher towards the cost of installing energy-efficient and low-carbon heating, helping to save up to £600 per year on energy bills! Called the ‘Green Homes Grant’, you can find out more on the OPC Energy website, and if you need help applying, the team is more than happy to help. To get started, simply visit www.opc-cornwall.uk.

ime spent at home has somewhat defined the past year of our lives, and with so many days spent between those same four walls, many have found themselves finding ways in which to improve them, from simple licks of paint and perhaps a new piece of furniture, to the very way in which they warm and power their homes. For those thinking about the latter, finding a renewable energy solution is quite possibly near, if not at, the top of the list of priorities. In fact, at a time when the impact of a changing climate has never been more apparent, it’s fair to say that more people than ever are looking for ways in which they can play their part in the building of a cleaner, greener future. But what, exactly, is renewable energy? By now, most of us have a rough idea. Solar power, for instance, quickly springs to mind, but by definition, any renewable energy source is one that will naturally replenish and, crucially, never run out. That last point is of particular importance, given the increasingly demanding lifestyles that those in the modern world lead. Whilst the move away from traditional energy sources like coal and natural gas is key in how we combat climate change, there’s no denying that their renewable replacements have their work cut out for them. Just think about all of the devices, lights and appliances that your household runs during the average day, and you’ll realise just how true that is!

If this sounds like you, then you’ll be on the lookout for a tried and trusted expert in renewable energy, preferably one with years of experience and with access to the industry’s best available technology and solutions. This is where OPC Energy comes in. OPC Energy was established in 2012 by Managing Director, Gary Salter, who has worked in the renewable industry since 2006. An early adopter of new technologies and renewable energy, Gary is truly an innovator at heart, and has built a company whose sole motivation is improving the energy efficiencies of homes throughout the UK. Since starting the business, Gary has built a team that offers expertise across the full range of renewable technologies, as well as some more traditional heating solutions. But with a number of renewable companies offering renewable energy, why choose OPC? “Our commitment is to provide our valued clients with the best eco-friendly solutions. We love doing what we do, and our teams consist of friendly industry experts, so when you work with us, you'll feel like part of the family,” says Gary, summarising the OPC Energy ethos. With full accreditation and compliance with all industry standards, the company has worked closely with countless homeowners, architects, developers and housing associations across the UK, and now, it brings this wealth of experience to the very heart of Cornwall. Based in Scorrier, OPC Energy’s newest office is in prime position to cater to the whole of the Duchy, and with more interest than ever from home and business owners who are looking to future-proof their Cornish properties, without compromising on any aspect of their dream by-the-sea lifestyle, it could not have opened at a better time. If your home improvement goal is to ensure your home is playing its part in the fight for a cleaner future, then be sure to give OPC Energy Ltd a call.

ith excellent eco-credentials and crafted in stunning Nordic style, we discover the Aduro Hybrid range of woodburners available at Wendron Stoves. After more than 30 years in the industry, you’ll struggle to find anything that Wendron Stoves doesn’t know about wood-burning stoves. Coupling this intimate knowledge with exemplary customer service, the team are perfectly poised to advise on a wide range of stoves, range cookers and barbeque heaters (summer is on the way!), and with one of the largest stove showrooms in Cornwall at its flagship store in Helston, you can happily wander around Wendron stoves and witness the different options in a homefrom-home setting. And, with more than 90 stoves to look at, in both traditional and contemporary styles, you’re sure to find one to suit your taste, home and budget.

 LEFT Pellet mode

With new government regulations demanding that wood-burning stoves meet the latest, stringent eco-design, we learned with interest about a new stove that is combining a traditional wood burn with environmentally friendly heating from wood pellets. The Aduro Hybrid range offers the timeless good looks of a wood-burning flame, combining them with a vastly more controllable heat source from an integral pellet burner. If you want to use the stove with firewood, by all means! Simply add wood as with a normal stove and the Aduro Hybrid will automatically shut off the pellet function. If you require more controllable heat, then you can simply fire up the pellet burner. It’s that simple. The look is Nordic contemporary with a modern cylindrical body and stainless steel handles. But these stoves have far more to offer than visual appeal. The Aduro Hybrid reduces emissions significantly compared to conventional wood-burning stoves: with the pellet function, the CO emission is reduced by 97%, the OGC emission by 91%, and the dust emission by 59%. While the pellet function is active you have a stove that can safely and happily run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will stay in overnight and with the addition of a very clever mobile app, you can even turn the stove on from your smart phone so that the house is warm when you arrive home. Imagine it… gone are those chilly mornings when you come down to get ready for work and school and the stove’s gone out. Simply set the timer before bed and the stove will offer you a lovely warm welcome each day. Similarly, if the weather takes a turn for the worse while you are out, light it from the app on your phone and there’ll be no more getting home from work to a cold,

dark house. The app will also allow you to regulate the temperature and keep a track on the combustion once the stove is alight. Aduro currently has more than 7,000 stoves registered via the app, where they are tracking more than 4,000 stoves operating every day. Aduro Hybrid stoves are great for heating large spaces and, as they comply with the necessary regulations, they can also be used to heat conservatories. Such is its innovation that in 2018 the Danish company Aduro A/S was awarded the prestigious European Business Award for the Environment on a national level in the category 'Sustainable Products and Services'. The Aduro Hybrid offers flexibility and functionality far beyond that of a normal stove and with its low emission and clean burning it is one of the most environmentally friendly methods of wood heating ever designed. Why not pop into one of Wendron Stoves' showrooms in Helston or Truro, where you can talk to an expert and watch the stove in action. If you decide to buy one – and take it from us, you’ll certainly be tempted – then you can rest assured that Wendron Stoves will take care of everything, from an initial, noobligation site survey where they’ll provide a competitive quote, to the final installation. As a HETAS approved retailer and installer all advice and installation complies with Building Regulations and British Standards, and the team can also keep your stove burning brightly and safely with a recommended yearly service. All you’ll need to do is light the fire, put your feet up and relax in front of the warmth and ambience of your gorgeous new stove.

WHY MAKE

THE SWITCH? We catch up with Mr and Mrs R, who tell us about their recent switch from fossil fuels to a renewable heating alternative with the help of GreenGenUK.

ABOVE  Heat your whole home with a clear conscience

S

ince opening in 2011, Cornwall’s GreenGenUK has been at the forefront of helping homes lower both their carbon footprint and their energy bills. The team specialises in the complete design and bespoke installation of a range of renewable solutions, such as air source and ground source heat pumps, solar PV and battery storage, solar thermal and more. Based in Helston, with nearly a decade’s experience in the renewable industry, if you’re considering renewables here in Cornwall, we find out from Mr and Mrs R why they chose GreenGenUK to help them make the switch from non-renewable heating to a more environmentally friendly alternative. Mr and Mrs R have now been living with their air-source heat pump for more than 18 months. When we ask why they decided to switch, we learn that the first reason is that they wanted to go for a greener heating solution. Never has the impact of our homes and the energy they consume been clearer to us, and so it makes sense to switch to renewable solutions in order to do our bit in the fight against climate change. Another reason is that with a renewable solution, as Mr R says: “There’s no more need for oil deliveries, and the Renewabale Heat Incentive payments mean the new system pays for itself!”

As we delve a little deeper and ask ‘how warm would you say your home has been since switching to air source heating’, the honest answer is that their home is “plenty warm enough,” according to Mrs R, but that “it can take a little longer to warm up.” That said, she also comments on GreenGen’s “great service, especially after a visit when we experienced a slight problem”. Next, we ask what advice they might give to anybody considering switching to air source heating. “It’s a great solution,” says Mr R, especially “if your home needs an upgrade or you’re considering going green.” And when it comes to enlisting GreenGenUK to help you do so, Mr and Mrs R’s answer is quite simple: “We would definitely recommend GreenGenUK – great product and great service.” There you have it – you needn’t just take our word for it! If you’re in the market for a green alternative to the way you heat your home, and want to enlist the help of a local team of experts to help you do so, then GreenGenUK really do come highly recommended.

TABLE TALK

Sometimes, when it comes to furnishing your dream home, furniture bought ‘off the shelf’ simply won’t do.

 MAIN

A gorgeous example of a bespoke Rozen dining table  RIGHT

From one-off commissions to bespoke furniture packages, Rozen has you covered

T

he Rozen Furniture workshop is where you’ll find skilled local craftspeople who can design and make inspired, bespoke furniture pieces. One of the key items of furniture in all of our homes – particularly for those of us who are looking forward to once again being able to entertain – is the humble table. At Rozen, when it comes to making a table, the team will help you realise something that’s both practical and beautiful, and of course, made to the highest quality. So what kinds of table can the team help you with? First up is the all-important dining table. After all, dining in is the new dining out! The size of your dining table is always an important first consideration. If space is at a premium, then yours needs to be adaptable. Rozen can create one for you with insertable ‘leaves’, or alternatively one that folds. The best bet is to discuss your needs with the team, who will be able to help achieve the best solution. That way, when we can once more have our friends over for dinner, you can all be sat comfortably together.

Next is the console table. This narrow table is a handy solution for hallways, and works perfectly when space is limited. Plus, the addition of a drawer gives you somewhere to drop your keys – no more rushing around trying to find them every morning! A console table can also be built to add flexibility to your dining table, in fact one happy Rozen client had one made that was the same width as their dining table, meaning that if they ever need extra space for dinner, they can simply pull up their console table. Simple, but highly effective! Leading on from the hallway and into your home office, if you’re one of countless individuals who, even after the lockdown, will continue to work from home, then you may well need to adapt your space to fit your new lifestyle. Indeed, home working has become a firm reality for many people, as has home schooling, and there’s no doubt that having the right table for such uses is conducive to a productive workspace. Your first option might be your aforementioned multi-tasking dining table, but if you have a

HOME

room that can be dedicated to serve as a home study, then you may wish to consider creating something more bespoke. Again, talking to the experts at Rozen is the best way to find the perfect solution for your needs, whether it’s a stand-alone, heightadjustable table, or part of a bespoke office furniture package. Finally, we retire to the living room, where the coffee table takes centre stage. Rozen are always happy to make ‘one-off’ furniture pieces and don’t just specialise in large furniture sets (although they certainly have you covered if that’s what you’re after!). The team welcomes one-off commissions, so if you have an idea in mind for the perfect centrepiece in your living room, just get in touch.

If you’d like to find out more, Rozen Furniture’s website is home to many examples for you to peruse, and it doesn’t take long to see that this is not just another furniture company. At Rozen Furniture, quality means everything, and the best part is that as a client, you’re made a part of the entire process, meaning you can ensure that every detail is precisely the way you want it and that your furniture is meticulously tailored to suit your home lifestyle needs.

o help get your garden spring and summer ready, Kris Evans, Sales Support Manager at Oltco, has pulled together some of his top tips to help spruce up your outside space. Oltco is known for its innovative resin bound surfaces, a solution that’s become renowned around the country as hard-wearing, lowmaintenance, and porous, meaning customers needn’t worry about spending hours cleaning or weeding it. It also has anti-slip properties, making it the perfect solution for swimming pool and hot tub surrounds. All of Oltco’s solutions come in a wide range of colours to suit every aesthetic, and the team provides customers with the option to create bespoke borders, patterns and designs, meaning it’s completely unique to your outside space. Add to this the fact that Oltco is the name behind the world’s first sustainable resin bound driveway solution, Recycle Bound, which is made using waste plastic already in circulation – and it’s the perfect option for those determined to keep their home improvements as environmentally friendly as possible! Kris' first tip for your garden is to add a splash of colour: “Colour can be used to complement the exterior of your home, brighten up the space and highlight particular features in your garden. Whether that’s planting bright flowers, giving the shed a lick of paint, or adding new decorations,” Kris tells us that “the use of colour can totally transform your outside space.” The next is to get stuck into a DIY project. “It is so satisfying completing a DIY project and getting to step back and admire your work,” says Kris. “You do not need to be a pro to get in touch with your creative side and there are lots of ways you can decorate your garden with your designs.” He suggests building bird

houses or bird feeders, particularly if you want to entice the local wildlife to your garden. If you’re really looking to go all out, then Kris explains how the addition of, or upgrade to, a new pathway or patio area can really enhance your garden. “We specialise in resin bound solutions which are ideal if you’re looking for a low-maintenance yet stunning surface,” he says. With a wide range of benefits including its anti-slip and porous properties and 20-year guarantee, it’s really no wonder that so many people are choosing resin bound to transform their outside spaces.

Ultimate

HOME LUXURY

As we all look forward to the spring and summer ahead, why not indulge yourselves with the addition of a luxury spa or hot tub to your garden?

T

his year is all about making the most of being at home, treating ourselves to a little bit of luxury and enjoying being with family. And what better way to improve any outdoor area than with the addition of a hot tub that will bring you years of pleasure. No matter how large or small your area or how many people you need to cater for, there is a hot tub for you. “We take a very consultative approach with our customers,” says Spyrys owner Sharon. “We like to understand who the hot tub is for, how they want to use it and what they want out of it, this helps us provide the right advice and help them choose the perfect hot tub”. “From our experience,” Sharon continues, “customers appear to have three distinct reasons to buy a hot tub: firstly, to put a spring in your step with the revitalising power of hydrotherapy. Hot tubs are becoming increasingly recognised for their health and wellness benefits, which can help all of us enjoy a better life. Secondly, it seems there is nothing more relaxing than a gentle soak in warm water, with subtle mood

lighting and the rhythmic sound of tumbling water. And finally, what better way is there to enjoy being with family and friends than taking time-out in a hot tub away from everyday distractions.” “We wanted our range to include affordable entry level plug and play hot tubs right through to powerful hydrotherapy spas,” explains Managing Director, Brian, “and this year we expanded that range by introducing our own brand of hot tubs, inspired by Cornwall and designed to cater for a wide range of lifestyle needs and budgets." To receive a free brochure and to find out more about the Spyrys Spas and Hot Tubs offering, including Sharon and Brian’s fabulous new range, be sure to give them a call or visit the website. Better still, why not pop into the showroom and see them for yourself?

CALLING ALL

! s r e k e e thrill-s Are you craving that postlockdown adrenaline buzz?

F READ

DISCOVER MORE Hangloose Adventure expects to open on April 12th, subject to government guidance, and the following measures will be in place: • Face coverings to be worn in all indoor areas and on minibuses • Hand-sanitising stations throughout the site • Social distancing markings and signs • Screens in retail areas to separate visitors from the sales team

or those of you who miss those moments when you feel like your heart is about to jump out of your body – moments before you burst into uncontrollable laughter – as we begin to see light at the end of the lockdown tunnel, we may have found just the thing for you. Situated in the heart of Cornwall, within the idyllic setting of the Eden Project, is Hangloose Adventure. This outdoor adventure centre is perfect for thrill-seekers visiting or living in Cornwall, providing them with an exhilarating and unforgettable, adrenaline-fuelled day out. Last year, despite Coronavirus, Hangloose was listed in the top 10% of tourist attractions worldwide on TripAdvisor, which is no mean feat, but like so much else here in the Duchy, it really is world-class! We have all been experiencing that ‘Groundhog Day’ feeling over the past year, and a trip to Hangloose Adventure has to be the perfect way to break that spell, making your day stand out and giving you, your friends and family something to remember for the rest of your lives.

So what will you find at Hangloose Adventure? Firstly, there’s the Skywire – England’s longest (and fastest) zipwire experience. At 660 metres long and almost 100 metres high, this is perfect if you want to gain a new perspective on the Eden Project’s worldfamous biomes. Try not to blink; at 60 miles per hour, you may just miss them! If you’ve already taken the Skywire forwards, why not try it backwards? Maybe you can’t face looking down the wire, or perhaps just want to get a different kind of buzz. Either way, the inverse zipline is great fun, and without googles and a helmet, you get a great sense of freedom. Next up is Skytrek – perfect for those looking to do a spot of teambuilding. Skytrek is the latest addition to Hangloose Adventure, and sees adventurers pushing themselves to the limit as they tackle the obstacles on the site’s high rope course. Finish off the course with a zipwire that takes you back to the start! At Hangloose, there’s more than one way to enjoy the view from above. That said, with Gravity, you won’t have long to do so; before you know it, you’ll be leaving your stomach behind in a breathtaking freefall back to Earth.

Ride solo or with friends on this giant cliff swing; experience the grip of multiple g-force to the weightlessness of zero gravity, all within mere seconds. Now we come to Big Air, which is really exactly what it says on the tin. Release your inner stunt double on the giant air bag; with three platforms to leap from, you’ll start on the bottom before climbing your way up the 12 metre high tower and throwing yourself off the top… Last, but by no means least, is The Drop. This is a true leap of faith, one that takes serious nerves to take. Offering one of the most spectacular views in Cornwall, The Drop is a controlled 33-foot fall simulator from a purpose-built platform, out over the cliff edge. Here you’ll experience the ultimate adrenaline rush, plummeting towards the ground in a few short – but very sweet – seconds. Of course, we are by no means at a stage yet where we can forget about Coronavirus. If you are still not up for venturing out quite yet, not to worry; Hangloose Adventure sells vouchers

for all activities and packages – the perfect gift to yourself or to any of your adrenalineseeking friends and family. What’s more, with their 100% risk-free booking promise, if anything does happen to prevent you attending your booking, they will reschedule or arrange a voucher for the full value of your booking, with a 12-month expiry date, free of charge. For visitors who aren’t returning to Cornwall, a refund will also be available. At Hangloose Adventure, the safety and comfort of all employees and visitors is paramount. Situated outdoors with big open spaces, plenty of fresh air, with a ‘We’re Good to Go’ certificate from Visit Britain and extensive Covid-19 measures in place, Hangloose nevertheless offers visitors a safe, fun and truly memorable day out – the kind we could all use after the year we’ve all been through!

WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU? Exploring the values that underpin the foundations of Cornish Traditional Cottages: trusted experts in all aspects of Cornish holiday lets.

L

ed by Managing Director, George Edward-Collins, Cornish Traditional Cottages is a values-led business, its mission statement declaring the team as the ‘Trusted Cornish Experts with Traditional Family Values’. To ensure their values marry with your personal needs, with each and every client, the team works towards answering a simple but very important question: are they the ‘BEST’ agency for you? To help you decide, they break that crucial adjective down into four words; four key reasons why their service may be just what you’re looking for. Starting with ‘B’, we have ‘Brand’. Cornish Traditional Cottages has been independent and family run since 1964, and even today champions the same values that inspired the company’s inception. Focusing on Cornwall only and never discriminating based on your location, the team market all sizes, shapes and styles of holiday home, with a brand promise that your property will never be lost in a crowd. ‘E’ is for ‘Experience’, and yours is always guaranteed to be a personal one. You’ll be assigned your own dedicated property expert, drafted from a team that lives and breathes Cornwall. In fact, when it comes to Cornwall, as George says: “If they don’t know it, it isn’t worth knowing!” Next is ‘Service’, and as we’ve already mentioned, a core set of traditional family values drive everything that George and the

team do. “We will give you honest advice and will never exaggerate the figures,” explains George. Again, you are guaranteed personal attention which, combined with hassle-free, reliable and efficient administration, from a team that endeavours to be pro-active rather than reactive in how your holiday home is managed, means you can relax in the knowledge that your holiday home is in the safest possible hands. Finally, we arrive at the capital ‘T’ of ‘Trust’. “We are members of the Holiday Home Association and Cottageline,” George tells us, “as well as a FEEFO Platinum trusted merchant for customer service.” More importantly, George explains that the entire team operate on an open, honest and transparent basis in all aspects of their service, including the fees that you can expect to pay, meaning there won’t be any hidden surprises later down the line. For those seeking an agency they can trust, who have yet to find the ‘BEST’ service for their needs, Cornish Traditional Cottages may be starting to look like a very attractive option. Owned and run by Robin and Jackie Haddy, this superb Cornish business has nurtured a reputation for combining a gorgeous locale with the tastiest Cornish food, including its own home-reared meat, and there is a clear passion for quality in everything the team produces. Indeed, having won a Gold award for ‘Best Café/Tea Room’ in Cornwall, and Silver at the South West of England Tourism Awards, as well as Taste of the West Gold Awards and even a place in TripAdvisor’s Top 10 ‘Best Roast Dinners’ in Cornwall, Jackie and co’s foodie flair has clearly not gone unnoticed! All of that aside, the last year has of course been extremely difficult for many independent Cornish businesses, but one thing we at Cornwall Living have noticed is how well many of them have been able to adapt to the changing times. Boscastle Farm Shop is no exception. In fact, testament to the popularity of this Cornish shop’s offering, Jackie and the team have, when restrictions have allowed, continued to welcome guests

for outdoor dining, and have even launched a new and incredibly popular online shop. Giving customers the chance to purchase a wide range of delicious homemade products, as well as items from the butchery and deli, with the option of either click and collect or delivery, it’s really no surprise that the online shop has been so popular! Unfortunately, one thing that has had to take something of a backseat in recent months is the farm shop’s usual calendar of foodie events. From barbeque and hog roast evenings, including live music and entertainment, to pop-up cinema nights and other clifftop capers, such happenings have been sorely missed since the onset of the pandemic. However, there is, we hope, light at the end of the tunnel, and Jackie is looking forward to a time when they can once again welcome us with open arms. Indeed, after a year of lockdowns and restrictions on our lives, what could be better than a balmy evening spent feasting and watching the sun dip below the horizon?

ere at Cornwall Living, we can’t think of anything nicer than enjoying a delicious ice-cream by the beach. However, traditional dairy ice-cream is not for everyone. With food intolerances and plant-based diets coming to the fore, we were delighted to find a non-dairy alternative that not only tastes amazing, but is made right here in Cornwall. Coconuts Organic was founded in 2015 by Cecily Mills, a BBC Dragon’s Den winner and former senior manager for Marks and Spencers. Adopting a plant-based diet herself, Cecily set out on a mission to replicate the smooth, creamy luxurious taste of dairy ice cream, but in a natural, vegan-friendly version. Following a move back to her native Cornwall, and alongside having two daughters, Cecily set about making her passion for ice cream her full-time career. Six very successful years later, having recently closed a third equity crowdfunding round early on Seedrs.com due to exceptional demand, the company is undergoing an exciting new rebrand ahead of some tasty new product development. Cecily’s, as the company will now be called, has designed their new packs to make more of their Cornish heritage and to reflect the fact that they are a female-founded company. “Our office is five minutes from the beach. We love

living here in Cornwall, and very much see it as the spiritual home of ice cream. We’re proud to be taking Cornish ice cream into the 21st century by using sustainable, plant-based ingredients combined with the expertise of generations of Cornish ice cream makers to produce the creamiest non-dairy ice cream around,” explains Cecily. With over a quarter of a million scoops sold this year and the winner of seven Great Taste Awards, the company is clearly doing something right. Cecily’s range is perfect for everyone, from flexitarians, vegetarians and vegans to anyone looking for simple ways to reduce their intake of dairy and animal products. “It was always really important for me to make an ice cream that was just as close to traditional, home-made dairy ice cream as it could be, but with plant-based ingredients. Cecily’s is a totally natural ice cream made in small batches, with ingredients you can buy in your local health food shop,” adds Cecily. We can’t wait to go and grab ourselves a scoop now…which flavour will be your favourite?

Other flavours include Chocolate Orange Swirl, Double Caramel, Creamy Coconut, Pure Chocolate, Pure Caramel and Rum ’n Raisin. espite an incredibly challenging last year, with the many and varied restrictions placed on our lives during the Coronavirus pandemic, Neil and Lee Roberts’ dream of running their own gin shop and bar is still very much alive, and The Little Gin Shack story only continues to evolve. So what can you expect to find inside? “We stock a vast array of local gins, from the Isles of Scilly to Torpoint,” explains Neil, “covering virtually every distiller in Cornwall. To complement our range, we are also proud to stock some of our favourite gins from around the world.”  ABOVE As something of a connoisseur, with Neil’s Find your help, you’ll never buy ‘blind’ when you buy perfect serve from the Little Gin Shack. Along with Jan – the store manager – Neil and the team are  LEFT Discover this always delighted to offer tiny tastings of the gin-porium for gin they sell, ensuring that you leave with a yourself! gin and serving suggestion that you like. As  ABOVE RIGHT Neil says: “It’s not a service you’ll get from a The Little Gin supermarket or online!” Shack can't wait to As with any other business, quality control re-open its doors! is at the top of the list of priorities here. “We have two simple philosophies,” says Neil. “Either Lee, Jan or I have to love the gin, and the bottle has to appeal to the purchaser. Poor gin in a fancy bottle simply does not cut it with us! Interested to find out more, we ask how The Little Gin Shack helps ensure customers find the perfect tipple for their tastebuds. “We purposely do not have a ‘gin menu’,” says Neil, who, along with Jan and the team, prefers to establish the type of gin you like, be that traditional, dry, fruity or spicy. “We will then offer you a taster (with an appropriate mixer, of course) and once you’re happy, serve your choice perfectly, in a proper glass, and with the correct garnish.” “We apply the same philosophy to the Cornish rum, vodka, brandy, liqueurs, beers and ciders that we stock too,” continues Neil,

and it certainly seems that their approach is being noticed; the Little Gin Shack was recently included in the top 10 Independent Shops review conducted by Reach, as well as an award conducted by mystery shoppers and based on TripAdvisor reviews. Not a team to rest on their laurels, Neil, Lee and co have recently added yet another string to their bow, now offering a full bar service. This allows you to come in and relax into the next phase of your day, whether it’s a gin before lunch, or an aperitif before dinner at one of Wadebridge’s superb restaurants. Even if you’re looking for a venue to spend a relaxing evening out, then as Neil tells us: “We are your destination!” We couldn’t agree more, and if you’re in Wadebridge and find yourself with a thirst, we can’t think of anywhere better to quench it than at The Little Gin Shack.

e catch up with Dr Joachim Stolte at MEDFacials. He has launched a new sister company, Rapid Health Test, which offers PCR services to those needing private Covid testing. “We have had a busy year here at MEDfacials,” says Dr Stolte. “We have had to switch our business model around significantly to accommodate our aesthetic clients under new guidelines. “We have updated our website to allow our customers to buy their products online. And we have set up virtual consultations by video and phone to let customers discuss their worries and concerns, even when our clinic doors have been closed.” One of MEDfacials’ most significant achievements has been to launch a new arm to MEDfacials – Rapid Health Test. Rapid Health Test has allowed Dr Stolte and his team to provide a unique service to clients in Cornwall and around the UK, offering private Covid-19 Antigen and same-day PCR Tests. “Our service includes in-clinic consultations and at-home testing,” he continues, “making it easy for people to choose the right test and get results quickly. Our antigen results can be done in just thirty minutes.” PCR testing has become a part of our lives, and for many people, private testing allows them to make essential journeys, including for work. As we look towards restrictions hopefully easing this summer, it may also be a requirement for some leisure travel and holidays abroad.

MEDFacials and Rapid Health Test is currently the only government-approved clinic in Cornwall to offer same-day PCR with Fit to Fly Travel Certification. Dr Stolte and his team are fully CQC and UKAS registered, meaning you are in the safest of hands, with reliable results guaranteed. And with all test results ready in just 30 minutes and no worries about delays with couriers, forgotten or lost lab samples, it couldn’t be easier to get your results with MEDfacials, Truro, and Rapid Health Test. Plus, if you quote ‘Cornwall Living’, you can receive £10 off your PCR testing with Rapid Health Test! “We are so proud to be able to offer this service to people now,” finishes Dr Stolte, “and we can’t wait to open our clinic doors again to our MEDfacials customers from April 12th as well.” To book an appointment at MEDfacials, or for more information about private Covid testing or Fit to Fly Certification, be sure to visit the website, or better still, why not give Dr Stolte a call?

amien and Philippa McNee recently relocated to Cornwall from the Cotswolds. They are delighted to have taken up residence at Wadebridge Dental, bringing with them expert knowledge and experience, having gained a whole host of qualifications over the last 14 years. After graduating from the University of Sheffield in 2007, Damien began his career with two years in general dentistry, before moving to Oxfordshire with Philippa, where he undertook a job in a private practice. Keen to enhance his clinical skills, Damien later completed a Master’s degree in Implant Dentistry, as well as a post-graduate certificate in Dental Law and Ethics, underlining his commitment to excellent patient communication and consent. He also has a certificate in Restorative Dental Practice, which has enhanced his skills in providing the latest techniques for his patients. With a special interest in restorative care and dental implants, Damien upholds a commitment to helping patients make the best decisions on their care. Philippa, meanwhile, has a special interest in Invisalign – an innovative treatment designed to discretely and comfortably transform your smile. She graduated from the University of Sheffield at the same time as Damien, has equally extensive experience in both general and private practice, and in between raising a family with her husband, has gained a Certificate in Contemporary Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry. She became an Invisalign provider in 2017 and has since completed

the Clear Aligner Therapy Diploma in London, making her one of only two dentists in Cornwall (both at Wadebridge Dental) to have, or to be undergoing, this post-graduate qualification. At the forefront of Philippa’s clinical practice – and, indeed, that of the entire Wadebridge Dental team – is patient care. In fact, with her keen eye for detail and enjoyment of all aspects of aesthetic dentistry, when it comes to achieving the best cosmetic results, you could not be in better hands! With numerous awards already under its belt, including ‘Best Practice’, ‘Most Improved Practice’ and ‘Best Patient Care’, and with more almost certainly on the horizon, it appears that Wadebridge Dental is not a practice to rest on its laurels. Indeed, with these two exemplary new additions to the team, if you’re in search of the best dental care from a practice that offers it all, there couldn’t be a better time to get in touch.

FUTURE IN TRUST Nick Latimir of RRL Cornwall explores the ways in which you can protect your children's inheritace during second marriage.

P  MAIN RRL can help you make secure provisions for your loved ones  INSET Nick Latimir

rompted by a recent article in the Sunday Times, Nick Latimir of RRL Wills shares his thoughts on the delicate issues surrounding protection of children’s inheritance following a second marriage. In this case, a father had remarried in later life and he and his new wife had made wills which made provision for one another on the first death and, on the second death, created an agreed split between their respective families. However, sadly for the father’s children, after his death they discovered that their step-mother had changed her will and there was no longer any provision for them. It is common, Nick tells us, for couples to make wills in this way. They are often referred to as ‘Mirror Wills’ on the basis that the same provisions apply on first and second death in each will. On paper this looks to be a fair and common-sense way of ensuring that the surviving partner can continue to live without any financial hardship or disruption. Yet as the Sunday

Times article illustrates, making wills in this way relies solely on trust and there is nothing to stop the surviving partner changing their will after the first death. This is particularly problematic for couples who have children from earlier relationships; once the first dies, the ties with the children can become remote or strained. Occasionally, bereaved partners will form new relationships and this can further complicate the position. “I have on one occasion in my professional life encountered an individual who sought to marry a vulnerable and recently bereaved gentleman, knowing full well that marriage would revoke his existing will, leaving him without a valid will and therefore intestate. Under the intestacy rules,” Nick explains, “the individual in question stood to be the major beneficiary. Sadly, such cases are not infrequent.” So what is the answer? The Sunday Times article sought to suggest that couples in similar circumstances should be looking to make ‘Mutual Wills’. Mutual Wills, Nick

LIFESTYLE

elaborates, are wills that are drawn up by a couple and signed following an agreement between them which is intended to bind the survivor after the first death. Broadly speaking this means that the wills cannot be updated after the first death and are therefore inflexible. As we know, life can change dramatically in a short space of time and unforeseen circumstances can arise. On that basis, says Nick: “I tend to advise clients to avoid setting up Mutual Wills.” A preferable way of making provision for the surviving partner but also ensuring protection for children’s ultimate inheritance is the use of a trust. Nick explains that the trust is created by the will on the first death and can provide the surviving partner with a right to benefit during their lifetime, for example by

receiving income from investments and continuing to live in the family home. This type of trust is commonly known as a life interest trust or interest in possession trust. The trust can be flexible to allow the trustees to use capital for the benefit of the surviving spouse, for example, for additional care needs, should they require it. For further information and to discuss your own will, it pays to seek expert advice, so be sure to contact Nick and the team at RRL.

The Upward Drift by Steve Slimm According to transcendental expressionist Steve Slimm, painting is not so much about what you see, but far more about who you perceive yourself to be. And this applies equally to the viewer as well as the artist. The large oil on

canvas shown (P.O.A.) bears testimony to the sublime quality of this mystery. His studio remains open by appointment.

LIQUID DRAMA As we wave goodbye to winter and embrace the warmer days of spring, Waves Gallery, Porthleven is eager to once again open its doors.

W

ith winter coming to an end and spring fast approaching, Waves Gallery in Porthleven can’t wait to re-open and welcome everybody back to enjoy the wonder of the Cornish ocean in its photographic form. It will be great to see Cornwall full of life again, with people able to enjoy the beaches (hopefully) in the sunshine. “We will be back open again as soon as we can with some exciting new changes to the gallery,” explains Mike Lacey, photographer and founder of Waves Gallery. “We have been busy here in Porthleven transforming the upstairs space into a light and airy feature exhibition which will be exclusively for my black and white photography prints.” This is something Mike has wanted to do for some time, as he explains, “because the black and white of a photo brings out the textures and tones of a wave rather than being distracted by the colour. It will be great to have them all in one feature space.” Although it’s been a quiet start to the year in Cornwall, the swell has been amazing and has provided Mike with some excellent opportunities to capture those intense winter waves. There has been an endless swell this season, ranging from wild stormy waves to perfect surfable offshore conditions. No matter the weather, Mike is always keen to

swim out into the swell with his camera – winter time in particular provides the dramatic shots he craves. There will be many of these new prints on display in the gallery – including the pictured shot named ‘Emerald Spray’. “This,” Mike explains, “was taken on the south coast with all of the elements working perfectly together on a cold but sunny afternoon.” Alongside his incredible wave photography, Mike has also been embracing being able to explore the local area with his camera, including some amazing rock and tidal pools. “Cornwall is an endless inspiration,” finishes Mike, “and we are so grateful to be based in such a beautiful part of the country. We can’t wait to see you all soon!”

hen Whitegoose in Wadebridge finally reopens its doors, customers will find the shop full of fantastic colours, wonderful aromas, fabulous clothing, gorgeous cushions, bedcovers, table lamps, silk flowers and much, much more. “This year, particularly after the last few months, what we all need is colour, colour and more colour, and reasons to be cheerful,” says Maggie who owns the store. “I say let the sun shine in!” This year, Maggie and the team have a fantastic collection of travel-proof clothing from South African brand, Habits, with a stunning range of vibrant and colourful clothes. “The best thing is they don’t require ironing, are exclusive, and most importantly, affordable. We also have collections coming from At Last, One Life from Mexico, The Happy Few from the south of France, a new collection from Suzy D, and much more.” But it’s not just new clothing that Maggie and co are excited to be bringing to the shelves, they also have a new collection of cushions from Biggie Best, as well as extra-large bed covers with matching pillow shams, some very stylish table-lamps to

complement interiors, and a gorgeous selection of perfumed candles, diffusers and soaps from Marseille. In short, as Maggie puts it: “Whitegoose may be small, but it packs a pretty punch in the wonderful town of Wadebridge! We regularly receive interesting and affordable new stock, and the affordability of our items is often a very pleasant surprise to many of our customers.” Looking to the future and Maggie explains: “I’m very much hoping that once we are ‘let out’ again, you ladies will be in the mood for something different and special, at prices that promise to surprise. We have a team that’s excellent at putting a look together, and we always offer a relaxed, informal experience, so please come and see us when you can. We value all of our customers and would absolutely love to see you!”

TARGET

! d e h s a sm Charity appeal smashes target, saving Cornwall Hospice Care beds

A

n appeal aimed at saving beds in Cornwall’s two adult hospices has raised well over its target a month before the deadline. Cornwall Hospice Care had hoped to bring in a quarter of a million pounds to protect beds at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices. Now, the healthcare charity has revealed Terry’s Bed Appeal has raised a massive £283,600. Oli Hoare is the Head of Fundraising: “We’ve been completely overwhelmed by the generosity of people across Cornwall. The reaction to the story of Terry, a patient who was in our care last summer, has been extraordinary. He wrote a letter before he sadly died asking people for help to keep his bed open for future patients and it struck a chord. The truth is that supporters have helped provide stability for us in a time of turmoil when the need for our hospices has been as important as ever and we can’t say a big enough thank you.” Both Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle have remained open 24/7 throughout the pandemic, admitting and caring for patients who need specialist palliative and end of life care. In the period from 1st April 2020 to

12th February 2021 Cornwall Hospice Care admitted 344 patients. Oli continues: “You helped us weather this challenging storm at a time when our shops have been closed and our fundraising activities curtailed. It’s my privilege to pass on a huge thank you from our whole team of nurses, doctors, chefs, housekeepers, maintenance, fundraisers, shop staff and our volunteers. We’re truly humbled by your support.” David Renwick is the volunteer Chair of Trustees at Cornwall Hospice Care: “We can’t operate without the support of the Cornish community,” he tells us, “and this extraordinary appeal total proves the kindness and generosity of those we look to when it comes to funding the care our charity provides. With my thanks comes a request to continue supporting us by running your own fundraising activity, taking part in one of our events, playing our lottery or visiting our shops when they reopen.”
