Cornwall through the ages

North Coast Collective

announces Summer Show Whilst sharing a passion for colour, light and form, the artists and makers of the North Coast Collective each express themselves with individuality. The year s e hibition includes figurative, abstract and impressionistic paintings, reworked lighting and vibrant playful jewellery, created in both nylon and silver. Taking place at the Rock Institute (PL27 6LQ) from 19th to 25th July, and open daily from 10am to 6pm, this is shaping up to be an exciting summer event, one you certainly don’t want to miss out on! You will also find three members of the orth Coast Collective at the Cornwall Shop Small Market on Truro’s Lemon Quay, on 17th July and 14th August, with Duchy Fairs.

The Museum of Cornish Life offers a fascinating insight into Cornwall’s rich heritage. The museum building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of your visit as you journey back in time. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. The museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers farming, fishing, law and order, home life, toys, sports, gardening and transport. Visit the museum website for how to book your free visiting slot. For more information visit call 01326 564027 or visit www.museumofcornishlife.co.uk

No time to fix your fences? If you’re spending more time in your garden now that summer’s here, you may be among the many here in Cornwall noticing that your fence didn’t perhaps stand up to the colder months as well as you’d thought! And with the longer, sunnier days, maintaining your lawns and keeping the garden tidy is probably keeping you busy enough, without the worry of repairing and treating your fence. If this is the case, then Colourfence might just be for you. While the team may not be able to wash your patio or trim your hedges, and they definitely won t clean your barbeque!) these steel fences, which are guaranteed not to warp, crack, shrink, rot or peel, are maintenance free for 25 years – so no pesky annual repairs or re-paints. News & views Littluns love Little Loves Cornwall

Inspired by the coast

Having worked in education for more than two decades, Kathryn Burgess of FlowMotion Art moved from Norfolk to Cornwall after holidaying here for many years. “I’ve always been interested in art,” she explains, “but a busy career prevented me from exploring it. With the move to Cornwall, I was inspired by the coastline and marine life, and the budding arts scene here, combined with my longstanding love of shapes, patterns and colours.”

Little Loves Cornwall is a small UK brand creating luxury handmade baby and toddler clothing and accessories. All items are designed and made in Cornwall or the UK, and the team sources the softest cotton jersey using water based inks.

Kathryn was inspired by her cousin, also an artist, to try fluid art – a techni ue that uses acrylic paints and employs a range of methods to move the paint across the canvas, producing totally unique, abstract pieces. “My husband created a small studio for me at home – so that I didn’t use his much-loved shed!” says Kathryn and, from there, the work she creates is absolutely stunning. ou can find more of Kathryn’s work on the website, and if you’d like to discuss a commission, be sure to get in touch!

The brand is completely plastic free and supports local charities through the sales of clothing. This includes The National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow – where visitors can witness marine conservation in action – and a new collaboration with the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek. Little Loves Cornwall is hoping to launch this collaboration later this summer and will be supporting the sanctuary through donations from the profits of its brand new range of seal print babygrows, leggings and jumpers.

For more information call 07900 810083 or visit www.flowmotionart.co.uk

“During the lockdown,” says brand owner and founder, Jemma Medlyn, “we have been lucky enough to have some famous faces dressing their children in our clothing. These include Stacey Solomon, Rebecca Adlington, Rachaele Hambleton, Lacy Turner to name a few!” If that’s not testament to the quality and style of what Little Loves Cornwall has to offer, we’re not sure what is! News & views A simple solution

for holiday home owners in Cornwall

Get outside with

Miracle Theatre After being forced to cancel all productions last year, Miracle’s return with brand-new cosmic comedy, Starcrazy is a welcome one, bringing people of all ages together again with support from the government’s Cultural Recovery Fund. Starcrazy tells the tale of Stan – a quiet, reclusive individual who spends a lot of time in his potting shed tinkering with a very powerful radio transmitter. His attempts to communicate with folk in distant galaxies are interrupted by a new neighbour, Gwen, who has interests much closer to home. And sinister forces are at work – or are they just inspectors from the planning department?

If you’re the owner of a holiday home in Cornwall or south evon, but are yet to find a waste management service that caters to your specific needs, then look no further than CTC Waste. Running their own fully licensed waste management facility near Truro with a large section dedicated to holiday lets, at CTC, 100% of waste collected is recycled – something to shout about when marketing your property, and a way in which to appeal to conscientious holiday makers, too! You’re only ever charged for waste that’s collected – no annual fee or contract to sign – and collections are booked online. In fact, the CTC booking system is very easy to use, with confirmations sent directly to your email. The best part, however, is that your guests don’t need to worry about separating their rubbish. Simply throw everything into the same black bag, and the CTC Waste team will separate it for you at their purpose-built facility. Simple. For more information call 01872 501221 or visit www.ctcwaste.com

The perfect tonic for a summer of Covid recovery, running from now until 28th August, this small but perfectly formed production will be popping up in locations all over Cornwall and the south west, so gather your nearest and dearest and look forward to some extra special time together under the stars! Inlight Beauty moves to Helston

New to Helston, but not to Cornwall, is Inlight Beauty HQ. The well-known artisan skincare business founded by Dr Mariano Spiezia – ‘the father of the organic beauty movement’ – moved to the new premises after 14 years based in Roskilly’s Farm near the Lizard. Keeping with their ethos and sustainability promises, the much larger premises runs on 100% green energy and allows for expansions of the award-winning beauty and wellness ranges. “We have seen a surge in eco-conscious consumers over the last few years; people are much more in tune with their wellbeing needs, including their surroundings, the food they eat and indeed skincare products,” says Inlight co-founder, Loredana Spiezia. The Inlight ranges are made completely by hand using C SM S certified natural ingredients which include herbs, flowers and oils. The slow beauty artisanal process can take up to four

weeks as each product base sits in the warmth, sun and moon light (all of which can be viewed in the new premises). Exciting is a recent report, findings from which compare some of the Inlight products to other similar brands The scientific yperspectral report shows that after using the Inlight products the skin is more luminous, is warmer and therefore has better circulation, and has better e cacy due to the way the product interacts with the skin over time. Professor Alberto Milani, who inspected the report, goes on to say that the clear point of difference is the alchemic technique and approach to the artisan products. These unique products are available online, or you can try them for yourself and catch a glimpse of production at 14 Water-ma-Trout, Helston. For more information call 01326 281114 or visit www.inlightbeauty.co.uk

Fond memories of the Tall Ships from previous years

LEFT Weather permitting, the Red Arrows are due to perform!

You can expect to see top-level competitive racing in a fun atmosphere and there are many viewing points on the banks of the River Fal to see the Carrick Road fleet racing such as the coastal walks around the estuary. Another good vantage point which looks across bay and down on Carrick Roads is Pendennis headland, particularly the ramparts of Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle. Owned, by English Heritage the grounds and castle are open and entry is pre-bookable online (english-heritage.org) for a prime position. Rosemullion Head also affords a ringside seat for when the boats head towards the Helford River.

From the 6th to the 15th of August, the world-class sailing waters of Falmouth Bay and Harbour (the third largest deep-water harbour in the world, after Sydney and Rio de Janeiro) will play host to a week of fast and furious fleet racing for yachts and dayboats and a host of shoreside events to delight and entertain. The regatta is organised by the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association (PoFSA) which is a partnership of Falmouth’s six local sailing clubs; Helford River, Mylor, Restronguet, Royal Cornwall, St Mawes and Flushing will each play host to a day’s racing.

t was with much hope, and everything crossed, that we would be introducing this feature with the excitement that Falmouth would be hosting a leg of this year’s Tall Ships Race. However, we have just heard from the organisers that the 2021 race has sadly been cancelled due to the continuing uncertain situation throughout Europe and across the globe in relation to the COVID pandemic. It’s such a shame for all involved, that we won’t be welcoming these majestic vessels to our waters, but there is light on the horizon…Falmouth Sailing Week 2021 (falmouthweek.co.uk) is still going ahead!

The historic Ancasta Champagne Race (sponsored by ancasta.com) takes place on the Wednesday. This long coastal race has a 60 year history and this year will be returning to its roots, hosting only the larger boats of the Bay Fleet. Racing in 15 square miles of open water outside the harbour the fleet consists of Firebird catamarans, IRC and YTC (South West Yacht Time Correction) yachts, and IF Boats. The coarse takes in the whole bay and extends up the coast to Gull Rock and beyond, finishing normally to the west side of Pendennis headland – although this depends on entries and conditions on the day. New for this year on the same day, and specifically for the Carrick Fleet – where you can expect Flying Fifteens, Shrimper 19s, Sunbeams, Falmouth Working Boats, Ajax 23s and Falmouth Gaffers, to pit themselves against St Mawes One Designs, Rustler 24s, and more – is The Mainbrace Rum Race (sponsored by mainbracerum.com). There is much anticipation for this new race, whose sponsors are an award-winning, Helfordbased drinks company whose unique golden rum is fast becoming the talk of the town. he hidden gem that is Portmellon is just south of Mevagissey; this picture perfect Cornish village is set around a pretty cove with a tidal sandy beach at its centre. Head out of the village on the soughtafter Chapel Point Lane, which leads from the village to the picture perfect landmark of Chapel Point, and you’ll discover Tamar. hat strikes you first about this house is its stunning elevated and exclusive position overlooking Mevagissey Bay. These views are maximised by the main living area being on the first floor, where there s a spacious and light sitting room and an expansive kitchendining room; there’s ample space here for a large family to enjoy or to entertain guests, as you can also spill out onto balconies from both of these areas. There’s also a further room on this floor which would serve e ually well as a reception room, study or fifth bedroom. A large sunroom, currently used for the bedding and cultivation of plants, leads off from the integral double garage, adding to the endless versatility of Tamar. Outside, a spacious brick paved terrace keeps maintenance low, while the combination of clever planting in the borders and mature shrubs brings life and colour to the garden. The South West Coast Path is immediately accessible from the village, for those who love to e plore, and a little further afield the traditional Cornish fishing village of Mevagissey has an active harbour at its heart, home to a small fleet of fishing boats. This is truly an opportunity to experience Cornwall’s south coast at its very best.

OF DREAMS

With such a buoyant market in Cornwall, we take a look at some luxury Carbis Bay properties, recently sold by Shore Partnership.

S

hore Partnership knows better than most that personality, taste and lifestyle define property. ith over 50 years' combined experience in Cornwall, the team draw on a rich and varied depth of knowledge, enabling them to provide clients with the best advice, enthusiasm and close attention to detail, as well as a stunning portfolio of luxury homes on the market of course! Here are just a few of the amazing properties that have just been sold.

Number 5 ith mesmerising sea views from eadland Road, it's no wonder that this sensational apartment was snapped up. Blending taste, style and durability, this contemporary bolt-hole was completely renovated and remodelled just a few years ago, creating elegant, calm and luxurious interiors. Just a short walk from the stunning white sand and blue waters of Carbis Bay beach, this is the ultimate coastal home.

St Margarets This beautifully proportioned garden apartment, in a much sought-after gated development, was a dream purchase for a discerning buyer. A full-width private terrace added to the versatility of this pied-a-terre, which was furnished and fitted out to the highest spec. Overlooking a pretty woodland copse, and with direct access to

a woodland path leading down to the beach, you couldn’t wish for anything better.

The Sands This exclusive development offers the kind of low-maintenance coastal living that dreams are made of. From mesmerising sea views from the penthouse apartments of 25 and 28 The Sands, to the versatility of the garden apartment of number 7 and the uber-cool interiors of number 11 with its two private balconies, it’s no surprise that Shore Partnership has sold ten of these superb apartments!

The Sands – a fine example of why buyers are looking to Cornwall

There’s no doubt that although these properties were all of the highest standard inside and out, it was also their truly unique location that attracted buyers. Carbis Bay is a gem in Cornwall’s crown – borne out by being the location of choice for his year’s Summit. ften benefiting from its own micro-climate and being quieter than the very popular neighbouring town, St Ives, you can see why this is a sought-after location for buyers.

OF SUCCESS Cornwall Home & Garden Show (formally Home & Lifestyle Show) recently celebrated its 10th year with triumphant success.

O

n Saturday 19th and 20th June, it was with eager anticipation that Cornwall Home & Garden Show opened its doors to visitors. This was an exciting moment, not only because of the lack of such events since the onset of the pandemic, but also because it marked ten years of success for this much-loved Cornish event. With Covid restrictions in place, the show (which was sponsored by Duke Stone, and supported by Shop Cornish and Cornwall Living) welcomed an impressive 4,000 visitors to peruse more than 130 exhibitors. And in the wake of the pandemic, as more than ever have found ways in which they would like to improve their homes, there was no shortage of inspiration, with stands covering ABOVE everything from homewares, interiors and Nothing beats gardens, to renewables and self-build. There face-to-face was also the ever-popular ‘A Bite of Cornwall’ advice from the food and drink market, offering show-goers a experts chance to grab a coffee or a bite and sit down RIGHT to chat through their new ideas. 'A Bite of Cornwall' Throughout the event, which took place food and drink at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre in market proved popular as always adebridge, conversation was flowing and there was a palpable buzz among the stands. BELOW In fact, the exhibitors reported more interest With Covid than ever before from visitors looking for restrictions in place, the show new ways in which to approach their home was a roaring improvements, renovations and self-builds. success! Managing Director Andrew Weaver says: “It was a pleasure to see so many people out enjoying themselves. With this many visitors attending it was testament that human connection and treating the senses is something we all want back again, and it’s evident that you can’t beat face to face discussion and seeing the products in the real world. Being an event organiser, this has been a tough year, so the support we received is greatly appreciated. We now look forward to organising the Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show in October.”

REST ASSURED Currently running a huge half-price sale, now’s the time to improve the way you sleep with the help of Christie’s Furniture.

MAIN, RIGHT You'll find a superb range of mattresses from Harrison Spinks in store é

T

here are many reasons to invest in a new bed. It could be that your kids have outgrown theirs, or perhaps that you’re tired of drawing an imaginary dividing line down the middle of yours and are ready to up-size. Alternatively, it could be that your current mattress is contributing to back pain – and when you remember that, on average, we spend up to a third of our lives in bed, it’s no surprise that the wrong mattress is a common cause for such ailments. Indeed, your bed is a very important part of how you furnish your home, and the time we spend in slumber can have a big impact on our waking lives. Having the right bed on which to rest your head can have a much more positive impact on your lifestyle than you think. For instance, an improved level of rest is thought by many to have a big impact on the way we learn and store memories, and while many think of sleep as a passive activity, our brains are far from dormant during the night. In fact, it’s at night that our brains store skills and information to more e cient and permanent parts of the brain,

and it’s while you’re asleep that you effectively practise what you’ve learned during the day. Add to this the fact that getting a good night’s sleep will help increase your happiness and ability to think creatively, and also, according to some studies, help reduce your risk of developing heart disease, heart attacks, diabetes and obesity, and ensuring you have the right bed is really a no-brainer! Whatever your reason for upgrading your bed, at Christie’s Furniture and the Christie s Bed Shop in enryn, you ll find a comprehensive range of beds for all budgets and requirements. Prices range from £99 all the way to £7,999, which means that whatever your budget, you re sure to find the perfect sleeping solution to suit you, your home, and your pocket. In fact, business owner, Pete Blell recently unveiled the new Harrison Spinks pocket sprung bed studio, where you can find everything you need to ensure the perfect night’s sleep. The superb range on display includes the new Pocket Sprung line from Harrison Spinks – an award-winning manufacturer of beds handmade in England. At Harrison Spinks, there’s no such thing as a standard bed. In fact, the collection is built on the idea that there is no perfect mattress to suit everyone. Each mattress contains the highest uality natural fillings, a natural sleeping surface, and the most innovative pocket spring technology to ensure optimal weight distribution and therefore the utmost comfort.

The best part about all of this, however, is that Christie’s Furniture is currently running a huge half-price sale on everything in store, so if you’re tired of sleepless nights, be sure to pop in and check out what the team has to offer. And we’re sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the selection, with no fewer than different beds and mattresses on display! So what are you waiting for? As we all look forward to a time when we can once again get out and make the most of time with our nearest and dearest, now’s the time to rest up and ensure you have the energy you need to enjoy the summer!

MAKE

THE SWITCH With the sun at its summer high, many are considering making the switch to solar power. ABOVE é Consultation, design and installation of solar PV solutions

D

id you know that as well as protecting your home or business from rising energy bills, solar PV installations also allow you to sell unused energy back into the grid? It’s no wonder, then, that solar PV (or solar photovoltaic is firmly among the s most popular renewable energy solutions. But it’s nothing new, really – it has been readily available to home and businesses for a number of years. The difference now, is that recent drops in price have made it far more accessible to homeowners. This means that more people than ever are switching to solar to protect themselves against hikes in energy prices. It works by converting the energy in the sun’s rays into the electricity used to power appliances. Energy generated is distributed to appliances around the home that are drawing power, and any unused energy can either be stored, or sold back to the grid. The latter is a great way to offset installation costs and as mentioned before, solar PV homes can expect to generate income from their energy supply for more than two decades! So who can help you make the switch? One of Cornwall and the south west’s leading providers is reen en . Since opening in 2011, the team have built up a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to the consultation, design and installation of solar PV solutions, varying in size from small domestic installations, to large-scale commercial projects. As a

result, they can offer impartial advice on renewable installations – advice that’s offered on a case-by-case basis, ensuring it’s tailored to the unique requirements of your home or commercial project. Through GreenGen, your project will begin with a free-of-charge, no obligation survey – conducted so that the team can better understand your needs. This also allows them to answer any questions you may have around both solar and other renewable energy alternatives. From here, they will draw up a detailed and accurate quote, specifying the components that will be used, before breaking down the financial and environmental benefit of the system. And, due to the fast-changing nature of the solar industry, they are always happy to requote, should your requirements suddenly change. But just don’t take our word for it! The reen en website is home to a string of excellent testimonials from happy clients, and it’s fair to say that if you’re already contemplating making the switch to renewable energy, you’ll quickly see the benefit of booking your free no obligation survey with the GreenGen team.

THINKING ABOUT

MOVING? If so, we discover how M.J. Christophers & Son can help.

I

f you’re among the many looking to make a lifestyle change in the wake of the pandemic, be that moving overseas or relocating here in the Duchy, then there is a business that’s been tried and trusted for more than 45 years. Offering removals and containerised storage throughout the county – to both domestic and commercial clients – the M.J. Christophers & Son service also extends to Europe and around the world. What really sets the team apart, however, is their commitment to care on each and every removal, having succeeded over three generations by offering excellent value and second-to-none customer service. In short, your home and belongings could not be in safer hands. In 2019, company owner, Mike decided it was time to update their online presence, and so set about having a brand-new website developed. The goal? To help make your move, whatever the scale, as straight forward as possible. The website presents all the information you need, along with answers to the most frequently asked questions, in a concise and easy-to-manage format. The first tab on the website you re likely to click is ‘Moving to Cornwall’. There, not only will you find all the details you need on how to apply for a quote, you’ll also see a steady stream of excellent customer reviews. One

such testimonial commends the “fantastic service from start to finish , while another details how Mike and co. were able to accommodate our move at very short notice and explains that they were “professional and e cient from the moment we had contact with them . Moving home is, without doubt, one of life’s most stressful experiences, so it’s reassuring to know that M.J. Christophers are there to help. And not just with the move from ‘a’ to ‘b’, either! As you move out of your old home, the transition period can often leave you needing to store your entire family’s belongings before being handed the keys to your new abode. While this may seem like a logistical nightmare, you’ll soon see – by clicking through to the ‘Storage’ page of the website – that the team can take care of that for you too. Based on either a long- or short-term basis, the team will load your furniture and goods into an empty container at your home, before storing it at their facilities, where the most up-to-date security systems are in place – including smoke detectors and CCTV – to keep your belongings safe and sound. Alternatively, if you’re thinking about moving overseas, you’ll no doubt be feeling the pressure of what is, unquestionably, a very daunting task. But fear not; simply click on the ‘Overseas Removals’ tab and allow the page to guide you through the process. It doesn’t matter whether you’re moving a single item, or the entire contents of your home, either, because M.J. Christophers & Son have a network of agents around the world who work to their same exacting standards. This means they can arrange all removal documentation and offer full liability cover,

while at the same time undertaking quality export packing by professionally trained staff, ensuring your items are well protected during their journey. Wherever you’re moving, and whatever you’re taking with you, one of the biggest tasks is almost always packing. To help, M.J. Christophers & Son offer a full or part packing service. Alternatively, you can apply for a free starter pack, which includes quality packing materials that are designed to meet your every need and ensure your most prized possessions are kept safe and secure in transit. REAPING THE

benefits

Letting your holiday cottage through the right company can increase investment returns dramatically. We talk to Cornish Traditional Cottages to find out more.

I

f you own a holiday cottage in Cornwall then maximising the return on your investment will no doubt be high on your agenda, but where should you start? Cornish Traditional Cottages has been in the business since 1964 and offers expert advice when it comes to partnering with a letting agency. Being Cornwall based, Cornwall owned and Cornwall focused means that not only is the team ‘on the ground’ to help and support, they also have expert, insider knowledge of the local area. You may be looking to market your home for just a few weeks a year or year-round; either way, a fle ible, bespoke approach will mean your holiday home will work better for you. Cornish Traditional Cottages understands this and the fact that each owner may be looking for something different. As Managing Director, George Edward-Collins explains: “If you don’t have the time or inclination to deal with marketing, sales or booking administration we’re happy to take all of that on for you. If however, you’re looking to market yourself and are looking for assistance then we’re happy to work with you on a joint marketing basis to make sure you can make the most from your holiday home.” George believes that offering expert, honest advice on everything from the dry but

important statutory responsibilities, to design, décor and even the duties of the housekeeper, is the key to a good working relationship and ultimately a successful level of occupancy and return: “Marketing is also a vital part of the process so I suggest partnering with an agency that offers an SEO-optimised website combined with digital and print marketing. We work hard to get your property seen in all the right places. Focusing on a combination of SEO, payper-click advertising and user experience, our website is at the heart of our business and is constantly updated to embrace new technologies and keep up with the changing habits of our customers.” With 40% of guests booking with Cornish Traditional Cottages year on year, and indeed some booking multiple times a year, it’s clear to us that this strategy is obviously working.

YOURSELVES Don’t miss Dandy Lion: a brand-new, intimate storytelling experience for children and families this summer at Trebah Garden.

T

ABOVE Dandy Lion, an imtimate story telling experience at Trebah this summer

his magical, musical fable will be performed across the sub-tropical ravine valley garden from 29th July to 6th August, and tells the tale of Tevi, a uniquely special lion cub. In a heartwarming, coming-of-age story he discovers what it is to be the leader of a pride – a reminder to adults and children alike that our uniqueness should be our strength; after all, there are many ways to be a lion. Trebah Garden has teamed up with Cousin Jack’s – the Cornish family theatre company behind the annual production of The Mousehole Cat performed live in Mousehole every Christmas – for this family promenade storytelling event that takes you on a magical journey, culminating in a celebration of individualism on Trebah’s private beach. Expect beautiful puppetry, live music, and captivating storytelling. This is a unique opportunity for spirits to be lifted and humanity celebrated in a much-missed shared experience! Directed by Guy Watson, founder and Artistic Director of Cousin Jack’s, who produced and directed Operation Neptune for Trebah in 2019, Dandy Lion will feature Emily Faulkner and Oliver Longstaff, familiar faces to the garden from previous performances. New to Trebah this year are Little Angel Theatre trained puppeteers

Stacey Mitchell and Jennie Rawling. The score has been written by Cornish composer and musician Ben Sutcliff and will be performed live by Zaid Al-Rikabi. The story has been developed from an original idea by Guy Watson and has been written by Charlotte O’leary writer of Operation Neptune, and will be produced by Jonathan Bray and Guy Watson on behalf of the Trebah Garden Trust. Dandy Lion is suitable for families of all ages; however, it’s worth noting that due to the topography of the garden children and adults will be required to walk as the route is not suitable for buggies. This is just one of the many exciting events planned at Trebah this summer. From live concerts on the beach and performances in Trebah’s own open-air amphitheatre, to pop-up family adventures and comedy evenings, there is a performance for everyone this summer at Trebah Garden. Ever-popular, these shows sell out quickly so we recommend early booking – see you there!

A new delicatessen, The Cornish Kitchen, comes to Falmouth with shelves stocked full of luxury, locally sourced products.

I

t was actually the Cornish pasty that drew the Frankiss family to Cornwall, when in 2017 they moved to the Duchy to take over a pasty shop in Falmouth, Their very popular pasty café, Oggies Cornish Kitchen, is an extension of the family’s love of food and Cornwall. However, knowing that there is so much more to Cornish food than the pasty, they wanted to find a new and additional way to celebrate the plethora of amazing Cornish food producers across the county. The answer came in the shape of The Cornish Kitchen, a luxury deli that opened its doors last month to great acclaim, showcasing the unusual and the artisan. We caught up with owners Rebecca and John who told us: e have been very lucky to find a premises very close to our existing shop with an outside seating area. This new space will allow us to share our love of all Cornish food and to showcase a wide range of local producers and artisans.” Expect Cornish culinary delights such as Cornish Charcuterie, Popti crackers and Little od tru e oil fresh produce from atrick s atch and Roots and Shoots and a carefully curated selection of local wines, cider and Cornwall’s only organic gin 'Land of Saints', from The Cornish Spirits Drink Company. Rebecca adds: “We are also developing a strong vegan and gluten-free section as this is very important to us. We will be carrying

ReRooted Milks – organic, plant-based alternatives supplied in cute glass bottles. The bottles can be brought back and exchanged for a new one. We then return the used ones to ReRooted who recycle and refill the bottles – we really love this idea of a no waste circuit.” The ethos is very much to champion small growers and producers, but John and Rebecca will be led by demand and are happy to source any special products at their customers' request. They also offer a fantastic local area delivery service for any orders over £10. This is ideal if you would like to order a particular cheese to end your dinner party, fancy sampling one of their great deli plates or want a night off the cooking with their tasty range of bake-at-home dishes – all delivered direct to your door!

of Cornwall THE SPIRIT

Capturing the essence of Cornwall in a truly unique bottle.

A

INSET The bottle takes design cues from naval history

BELOW The perfect accompaniment to summer

s the Haigh family was sat one sunny day, watching the gig rowers come in for a celebratory postrace drink at The Ferry Boat Inn, Helford Passage, a dream was born. What they saw, was a close-knit Cornish team whose success was based on teamwork, and they decided that they wanted to capture that…in a bottle! So it was that the journey began to create a rum that could be enjoyed equally as a sipping rum or in a cocktail. After testing various blends of flavours, branding, and bottle designs, Mainbrace Rum was born, capturing the punch of agricole from Martinique and the sweetness of a Guyanese rum; a combination of tastes that had never been exclusively bottled before and giving a nose initially dominated with notes of dried fruits and toffee, followed by those of sweet apple and spices, finishing long and smooth with a subtle warming spiciness, making for an extremely wellbalanced rum. The stunning design of the Mainbrace bottle takes inspiration from naval history, and the barrels known as grog tubs; while its very name encompasses the courage, loyalty and teamwork needed to ‘splice the mainbrace’ as well as embodying the spirit of celebration and hard-won victory of those gig rowers.

Mainbrace Rum was launched at London’s RumFest in October 2019, where fellow rum enthusiasts were given the first opportunity to e perience its comple ity of flavours. The Haighs concentrated their efforts on making Mainbrace Rum available in its birthplace… Cornwall. And it wasn't long before the rum took off. Now available to purchase in bars across Cornwall, this tempting tipple has won a string of awards, including Gold at the World Rum Awards, Double Gold at the World Spirits Competition and Gold at The Spirits Business Awards, to name just a few! ith its seafaring roots, it s fitting then that Mainbrace has announced a partnership with the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association (PoFSA). The partnership will involve the sponsorship of the Mainbrace Rum Race for the Carrick Fleet, which will take place during Falmouth Sailing Week on Wednesday 11th August 2021. So, while you’re watching the racing unfold why not do it with a glass of Mainbrace Rum in hand!

DID YOU KNOW? A seafaring history The barrel, known as a grog tub, was used to carry the Navy rum – or 'tot' – given out twice daily to the sailors, sadly a tradition now obsolete! Originating in the heart of battle, a brave team of sailors would attempt to ‘splice the mainbrace’ if it was damaged in order to save the main mast of a ship – a difficult, but vital task. If they succeeded, they were rewarded with a double ration of rum to celebrate.

DISCOVER MORE You can get your fill of Mainbrace Rum from North Coast Wines in Bude, John’s Liquor Cellar in St. Ives and Truro as well as online from Drink Finder, Ellis Wharton Wines, Master of Malt, The Whisky Exchange, and Mainbrace’s own website.

ornish Tea & Coffee has to be one of the fastest moving businesses in the Duchy. Bearing in mind that company founder, Duncan Bond, only came up with the idea on New Year’s Day in 2012, it’s almost unbelievable that only nine years on, the company has its own o ces, warehousing, a delivery fleet and even its own factory – all right here in the Duchy! As a business that’s always looking for ways in which to raise the bar and set new industry standards, Cornish Tea & Coffee stands in the vanguard when it comes to the sustainable production of tea and coffee, and is constantly adding to and developing its range of sustainable products. It’s also continuously on the lookout for ways in which to make the customer experience that much easier, which is one of the reasons behind the launch of the brand new Cornish Tea & Coffee website (cornish-tea.co.uk). With the full range of tea and coffee available to browse and buy, the website has been designed to make buying your favourite brew easier than ever. If you’re buying for yourself, you ll find a handy

‘Cuppa Calculator’ which you can use to work out exactly how much tea or coffee you need – based on your average consumption. Once you’ve calculated what you need, it’s a simple case of clicking ‘place your subscription’, and you can rest assured that you’ll never run out of your favourite brew again. This doesn’t just work for tea, either, and just a quick look on the ‘Coffee’ tab is enough to see that the range of both beans and ground coffee has a little something for everyone. Add to all of this a host of sundries, accessories and gifts, including a selection of Cornish Tea & Coffee hampers, and if, like us, you treasure those precious moments spent over a steaming cup of your favourite hot drink, a visit to the new Cornish Tea website comes highly recommended.

Ethical, lab-grown diamonds that don't cost the earth

I

t was in a laboratory at General Electric in the 95 s that the first man made diamond was created. Born from a small diamond seed , these first diamonds were not grown for gemstones but as functional diamonds for industrial, computational, health care, and scientific applications. Consisting of carbon atoms, they display similar chemical and the same optical characteristics as a natural diamonds and are graded in the same way, but it has only been in relatively recent years that engineered diamonds have become viable for fine ewellery. It was an appreciation of fine ewellery that was the catalyst for laine Reffell s relationship with lab made diamonds. laine was given a pair of earrings as a birthday present, but these differed to her other ewellery in the fact that the diamonds in them weren t mined, but created in a laboratory. laine e plains: It didn t matter to me that they weren t mined diamonds. I couldn t tell the difference, they were every bit as beautiful and meaningful and I was fascinated with how they had been made. laine s aim was to source beautiful lab made diamonds that came without the conflict and the associated price tag. Several

BRIGHT years of research and travel led laine to find a supplier who was producing diamonds in a laboratory that were every bit as beautiful and strong as their mined counterparts. She set up her earth friendly diamond business, thica iamonds, in and has been able to combine ethical good practise with e cellent customer service. ven most lab grown diamonds have an associated carbon footprint and emissions and the pricing of these stones is fi ed against the mined diamond market, which she believes is unethical. ith all this in mind, laine is proud to only work with laboratories who share her ethos. thica iamonds is currently the only supplier in the south west of pure, lab grown diamonds from the iamond Foundry the world s first certified, ero carbon footprint producer of diamonds where production is hydropower, meaning ero emissions. laine tells us: e work closely with our suppliers and are pleased to say that we're the only business of this kind in the . e are able to bring people an ethical diamond at a time when everyone is looking deeply into the origins of what we purchase. othing that has been dug

up from the ground can ever be free from environmental impact to the seabed, wildlife or climate. ur belief is that if something is given from the heart, symbolising a special time such as an engagement, the birth of a child, an anniversary or a wedding, its production should not be associated with any humanitarian environmental harm or suffering. thica iamonds has its home in Truro – a beautiful, welcoming showroom where customers can come, by appointment, to choose their piece of ewellery. There is the option to select from a catalogue of designs, or laine and her team are happy to take customers through the bespoke process. They will help couples to design their own ring, which is then lovingly made by their own very talented eweller who lives nearby. In keeping with the ethos of the business, the metals used, be it gold or platinum, are predominantly recycled. Customers are able to select every element of their diamond, from the cut, to the shape and the si e. If a bespoke ring has been chosen, then sketches will be done and silver or wa samples made up so that they can see the proportions and get a good idea of a sense of scale.

laine e plains: e often find that people have seen something they like at Tiffany, Beaverbrooks or Boodles and want to recreate it using an ethically made diamond. Many of our customers have a science background and, having researched the product, have discovered that there is an ethical alternative to purchasing a mined diamond, that also saves them money. ach appointment takes around two hours, which shows the love and care that everyone at thica puts into their work. laine s daughter mily has now oined the family business, becoming a valuable part of team. The reason why we do what we do is all about the customer e perience and their ourney – it is such a lovely time to be involved with a couple who have recently become engaged, says mily.

A HIDDEN GEM A rare, legacy jewellery business has, for almost a quarter of a century, been at the heart of Cornwall's cathedral city.

K

limek Jewellers, an established family business, first opened its doors in Truro in ovember 99 . wner, arol limek, started his career in the ewellery business as an apprentice for a well known ewellers in Maidstone, ent. e studied all aspects of the ewellery trade and became a very knowledgeable gemmologist. e went on to work for many important businesses all over the world including Mappin ebb in nightsbridge and two ewellery companies in South frica, where he became ac uainted with several of the important diamond companies there. uring his career he served royalty and many famous people, including lton ohn, supplying them with rare diamonds and gemstones, often fashioned into ewellery or ust as collection pieces. In 9 , when he was about to return to ngland from South frica, he was asked by an important diamond company to travel to Brunei to sell diamonds to the Sultan for his collection as well as e uisite gemstone ewellery for his wives. This led to several years of travelling back and forth at the re uest of the Royal Family of Brunei. t that time, he owned a ewellery business in Tunbridge ells and then later moved to France. In 99 , the decision was made to return to his wife s Cornish roots so that their

children could have a stable senior school education. arol was a well loved, e tremely knowledgeable and skilled person in many fields. is thirst for knowledge knew no bounds. In he was made a Member of the ational ssociation of oldsmiths in recognition of his contribution to the industry. is generosity and kindness touched many people who remember him fondly. fter his sad, sudden passing, his wife, Bettina has continued to run the business, maintaining his honest, fair ethos and encouraging all staff who work there now, and in the past, to study the fascinating field of ewellery and gemmology – with all education being fully funded by the business. The time has come for Bettina to spend more time with her children and grandchildren who are scattered around the world. So, it is with much sadness, she will be saying goodbye to many very special customers. The shop now has a retirement sale running, which will continue until stocks are low, so this is the ideal time to ac uire your own stunning hidden gem.

WRITTEN FROM

the heart

A new children's book inspired by a love for the ocean.

T

DISCOVER MORE Coral and the Cornish Heart is available to buy from Waves Surf Art galleries in Porthleven and Falmouth or online at www.wavesgallery.co.uk.

he fear of illustrated children’s books being cast aside for screens is very real among modern parents, and with the reading of bedtime stories threatened to be taken over by digital home assistants, it’s with delight, relief, and a strong sense of pride that we discovered a new children’s book from Mike Lacey, conceptualised and written here in Cornwall Living’s home village of Porthleven! The book’s main character is Mikey. In real life, Mikey, aka Mike Lacey, is one of Cornwall’s leading surf art photographers. His passion for Cornwall and nature is revealed in his diverse portfolio of ocean photography, which in turn is revered by locals and visitors alike who are stunned by his ability to capture the ever changing form of the Cornish breakers. It was one photograph in particular though – a perfect heart caught in a breaking wave the night before his first child was born – that inspired him and his wife to create their first children’s book. Based on a true story, Coral and the Cornish Heart begins with the news that Mikey and his wife are going to have a baby. As with many new fathers, Mikey is a little nervous and takes to his beloved ocean with his camera to ask his underwater friends Ninja Crab Nina and Sophie the Seal for

their advice. The book then follows Mikey’s journey before the baby is born, in search of the perfect picture. Which he does, the day before his daughter Coral is born! We wouldn’t want to spoil your enjoyment so you ll have to read the book to find out what happens next. It is a tale told from the heart. Written by Mike’s wife Lisa, the prose is gentle and lyrical, addressing those fears that nearly all new dads experience before their first born arrives. The book is lovingly illustrated by Hermione Rose (@ hermioneroseillustration) cleverly combined with Mike’s ocean photography. The style is reminiscent of picture postcards bought as a child to send to Granny, evoking memories of beach days and bedtimes stories, salty hair and sandy toes.

courtyard of traditional barns, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, are being restored to create a unique rustic Cornish wedding venue – a two-year project in which four generations of a local farming family have been involved. Formerly a part of the Lanhydrock estate, as works come to a close, Avalen is shaping up to offer couples an unforgettable place in which to hold their special celebrations. The countryside setting provides an oasis of calm and tranquillity away from an increasingly busy world. Couples tying the knot here will have exclusive use of the site, with options that include a ceremony room for up to 100, or the ‘Big Barn’, which seats 130. The wedding courtyard, meanwhile, is perfect for pop-up caterers and a wonderful space for postceremony mingling and al-fresco dining beneath the Cornish summer sun. Both large and intimate weddings are catered for here, and couples have plenty of options to choose from. Not only are there two spaces in which to say ‘I do’, there’s also a separate bar and dining room, plus a romantic courtyard which is perfect for those all-important wedding photos. In fact, the wider setting is crying out for a photo shoot; tucked away in 100 acres of farmland, amongst rolling countryside and rambling hedgerows, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more idyllic and uintessentially

Cornish setting. You’ll be looking your best too, thanks to an onsite hair and beauty salon, and did we mention that the farm’s former Cart House has been stylishly converted to offer the bridal party somewhere to stay the night before the wedding? For happy couples hoping to stay, there’s a gorgeous honeymoon suite available, and for guests who wish to avoid being the designated driver, there’s further accommodation for up to 28 guests available at Avalen’s sister farm, Torview (torviewbarn.co.uk), just minutes away. Whatever your ideas, and whatever the size of your wedding, Avalen offers the perfect blank canvas. And as a family run business, the team are proud to be able to offer that personal touch to help craft a uni ue, fle ible and rela ed occasion for you and your guests. So if you, like many, have placed your wedding plans on hold due to the pandemic and are now, once again, searching for the perfect Cornish venue in which to finally say I do , be sure to visit the Avalen Farm website and start planning your most special of days.

ild Tipi provides beautiful Giant Hat Tipis for weddings and events across Cornwall and the south west. These graceful giants were seen blending into the landscape on picturesque cliffs, nestled into farms and on the grounds of stately homes. e catch up with Sam and Tim to find out how the pandemic has affected them and how things are changing now that regulations are easing. “When large events were cancelled, it was a huge blow to us here at Wild Tipi,” explains Sam. “Not only did it mean an uncertain financial future, but it was heartbreaking to see the emotional impact of these cancellations. Our couples were lost, and we often lacked clear guidance to help them through. “It has been indescribably wonderful to have restrictions lifted, and to see weddings and events starting to go ahead again,” continues Sam. “We have the busiest summer ever ahead of us now that weddings of more than 30 people are now allowed. Our feet haven t touched the floor since the st of June! “Of course, there are strict guidelines that we need to comply with to keep everyone safe, but it has been a joy to see these days happen at last.”

Freckle Photography

When Covid-19 swept in, and turned the world upside down, local business owners Sam and Tim Moore of Wild Tipi were left treading unknown waters.

So what’s next for Wild Tipi? Tim tells us: “We have made use of the time that lockdown has afforded us to work with some fantastic local businesses. We have also been working on a vision to have a permanent space for a Tipi set-up at our home. It is a farm, surrounded by undulating fields of green and not far from some magical pine woodlands.” “The aim,” Tim elaborates, “is to invite others into our spaces to hold nature-based workshops and corporate days focusing on re-connecting in nature. We are excited about the future. Wild Tipi always has and will continue to be about connections; to each other and the natural world. We believe that after such a wild year, we could all benefit from some time in nature!” If you would like to find out more about Wild Tipi or wish to enquire about hiring their new space in Ladock, be sure to get in touch, or visit the website to find out more.

From cake sales to challenge events, fundraising takes many shapes and involves people of all ages. Here are two stories of generous and committed children, raising money for their local air ambulance.

Fundraising in memory When seven-year-old Daisy’s grandad, Keith Simmonds, passed away in March 2021 she wanted to do a fundraising challenge in his memory. Daisy decided to run every day in April to raise money for Cornwall Air

Ambulance, the charity which helped him. Laura Simmonds explains their story and why her daughter Daisy wished to support the air ambulance. “Back in 2018, my dad Keith was painting the outside of the house when he started to get chest pain. Mum called 999 and a paramedic came out and after assessing him they confirmed he was having a ma or heart attack and needed urgent care. He was driven to Porthleven Cricket Club where Cornwall Air Ambulance landed to take Dad to Royal Cornwall Hospital for specialist treatment. “My parents live roughly 20 miles from the hospital. Critical Care Paramedic Jeremy, who treated Dad, said they had only a matter

of minutes to get him to hospital. When they arrived, he was taken into theatre to have a stent put in his artery that was 99% blocked. “If the Cornwall Air Ambulance had not arrived, my dad wouldn’t have survived. We can’t express enough how important the Cornwall Air Ambulance is, especially in a county as rural as Cornwall. The speed of the helicopter and the paramedics on board were just amazing and we could never thank them enough for saving his life.” In 2018, Keith featured in the New Heli Appeal campaign. The image of him with Daisy was used across Cornwall to promote the appeal for a new helicopter. Laura continues: “Dad always wanted to go to the Cornwall Air Ambulance base when he got better to make a donation, however that day never came. Sadly, following further health complications, he passed away this year. In memory of her grandad, Daisy set herself a challenge to run 65km in the month of April. Dad was 65 when he sadly passed away so we thought that number was appropriate. I thought it was lovely Daisy chose Cornwall Air Ambulance as it is something very close to our hearts and Daisy has her name on the new helicopter too.” In total Daisy raised £2,250 for Cornwall Air Ambulance, which she presented to the Critical Care team at the charity headquarters. Debbie Henshaw, Senior Fundraising Manager for Cornwall Air Ambulance, says: “Daisy is an amazing little girl. She raised an incredible amount of money in her grandad’s memory, which will help the next person in need – that is a very special thing. Community fundraising is at the heart of the charity and has been since it was founded. It really is lots of people doing their bit which keeps the helicopter flying and saving lives. Patient turned fundraiser After running through a glass door at the age of three, Jack Davey was airlifted by the

Cornwall Air Ambulance crew from the Isles of Scilly to Royal Cornwall Hospital, a trip with a total distance of nearly 140 miles. e suffered significant in uries and needed surgery on his face, neck and hand. Now 10 years old, Jack wanted to show his appreciation to the crew by fundraising for the lifesaving charity. Originally planning to cycle the same distance he was flown in the helicopter, he exceeded his target and cycled a grand total of 200 miles, despite recently breaking his arm. Jack managed to raise an incredible £1,975 for Cornwall Air Ambulance through sponsorship and gift aid, smashing his target of £140. “I did about 16 miles every day until I got to 200 miles,” he explains. “I did about half on a turbo trainer, which is really hard work, and half on my mountain bike riding on the trails near my house.” He was supported throughout his challenge by his dad, Wayne Davey, a former Cornwall Air Ambulance and SAR paramedic. They often see the air ambulance flying over their home in Carn Brea and said it is a constant reminder of how much the service is needed. Jack says: “The Cornwall Air Ambulance service is very important. It is a risky job that they do, especially when they have to fly out over the sea to the Isles of Scilly, and it has saved lots of people’s lives.” For more inspiring tales like those from Daisy and ack, and to find out what you could do to help raise funds for Cornwall Air Ambulance, be sure to head to the charity’s website.

WELCOME TO The Cornish Seal Sanctuary team is incredibly excited to welcome three baby beavers to their site by the Helford river.

DID YOU KNOW? Wild beavers lived in Great Britain over 400 years ago before going extinct. They were mainly hunted for their fur and glandular oil, secreted from the base of their tail, thought to contain medicinal properties.

Gweek

T

aking place in the large woodland area of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, the Secret Creek project has welcomed three baby beavers – Twiggy, Barbara and Norbert. Conservationists and beaver re-wilding campaigners across Britain are currently trialling many projects, re-introducing oncenative beavers into managed environments to study their impact on nature. Beavers are known as a ‘keystone species’. This is because their natural behaviour has a big impact on our landscape and wildlife. By damming waterways, beavers pool water, slowing the flow in rivers and streams. This water floods an area, creating new wetland and attracting wildlife, providing a home and water source for many species. As wildlife conservation is at the heart of all the sanctuary’s efforts, the sanctuary decided to pair up with several conservation groups across the country to determine the best use of the large woodland area at the sanctuary. It was quickly decided that beavers would make an excellent addition to the sanctuary, providing them with the perfect habitat which will in return open doors for research to further study their impact on the environment. The sanctuary are planning various research projects to understand more about beaver behaviour in the wild and how they impact the environment they inhabit. It is

known that their presence is beneficial and may even help to combat climate change. Beavers are very secretive creatures, mostly active during the night, which makes it di cult for the public to engage with these mammals. The aim of the ‘Secret Creek’ area at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is to provide engaging educational content for visitors to learn about these enigmatic animals. Returning guests will see landscape changes happening over time, while there is always the possibility to catch a glimpse of the beavers hard at work. These three were given a second chance, and this is just the beginning of their story. Now, to help them provide expert care to the rescued beavers, carry out the vital ecological projects and introduce an exciting visitor centre, the sanctuary team need your help. Any donation big or small will go such a long way to help support this ama ing new adventure, that will benefit so many for the future.

ë é ABOVE We can't wait to see the difference these three beavers make to the landscape!
