Welcome
From the Editor
to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!
Visiting Cornwall’s garden attractions offers a serene escape into a world of natural beauty and horticultural wonder. Renowned for its mild climate and stunning landscapes, Cornwall boasts an array of captivating gardens that cater to every taste and interest. Perhaps one of the most iconic destinations is the Lost Gardens of Heligan, a sprawling estate that was rediscovered and restored to its former glory in the 1990s. Visitors can wander through lush greenery, ancient woodlands, and intricate Victorian-era gardens, discovering hidden sculptures and exotic plants along the way.
For a more exotic experience, Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Isles of Scilly take visitors on a sensory journey through diverse ecosystems of which one might expect to be found in more Mediterranean climes. In contrast, Trebah Garden offers a tranquil retreat nestled along the Helford River. Its subtropical paradise features a ravine garden, cascading streams, and a secluded beach, providing a peaceful haven for relaxation and reflection.
Cornwall's garden attractions cater to all ages and interests, from avid botanists to casual nature enthusiasts. Whether exploring historic estates, marvelling at rare flora, or simply enjoying the serenity of nature, a visit to Cornwall's gardens promises an unforgettable experience immersed in the beauty of the natural world. Discover more as Dan Warden takes a walk through some of our favourites in this month's cover feature from page 15 and again in our gardens special feature on page 29 . If you're a budding gardener yourself, then a visit to Trevena Cross is a must. On page 30 , we take a green-fingered look at one of the Duchy's premier garden centres whose 50-plus years of plant-growing experience is evident in the quality and quantity of its year-round plant stocks.
This issue we also look forward to a highlight in Cornwall's festival calendar; the Porthleven Food Festival. Preparations in our home town are underway for a celebration of all things culinary, accompanied by some great musical highlights from 26th to 28th April. One of the festival's founders and patron, chef Jude Kereama looks forward to a long weekend of food and fun from page 48 , while we bring you a sample of Rupert Cooper's exciting feast night menu from page 50
And finally... we're looking forward to celebrating our 150th issue with a bumper competition sponsored by St Austell Brewery. Turn to page 59 to register for its launch and to keep up to date with all the fabulous prizes as they are added. Don't forget, you've got to be in it, to win it!
...happy reading!

Indeed, having already earned a Taste of the West Gold 2024 for Kerbon®, an innovative and exciting whiskey-style spirit, the Copperfish team are clearly doing something right! So, what is Kerbon®? It is a Cornish Bourbon-style spirit made from a mash of local corn, barley and wheat. Skilfully fermented and distilled, the full-strength spirit is rested in selected oak casks for many months to develop taste and colour. The result not only tastes great, but it comes in bold and stunning packaging that makes it perfect as a special gift.

Robbie Kirkman, the Eden Project’s Education Team Lead, explains: “Running live streams from our Rainforest Biome is an incredible experience and it is amazing to see how well received they are. To reach more than 75,000 students, many of whom may not have had the chance to visit the Eden Project before, is truly heartening. If you’re interested in taking part,

A Josper grill has been added to the kitchen, which will be giving dishes a smokey edge, while old favourites such as Kai’s Laksa Noodle Soup or the ever-popular Kai Burger still grace the menu. Diners can now enjoy delicious food and drink, softly lit by handmade lighting by Lovelinkin

A county IN COLOUR
Immerse yourself in Cornwall’s gardens as they begin their annual spring bloom.
Words by Dan Warden
Well, what a windswept winter it’s been! I’m sure that we at Cornwall Living aren’t the only ones who are glad to start seeing the back of the cold season, not least because it was the stormiest on record since 2015. With spring upon us, Cornwall is finally starting to come back to life; the hedgerows are bursting into colourful life and our days are once more beginning with the dawn chorus of birds as they too celebrate the seasonal change. For a microcosm of everything that makes Cornwall such a wonderful place to be in the spring, any one of the county’s beautiful gardens are well worth a visit. Each with something different to offer visitors, with the common purpose of celebrating the beautiful worlds of botany, horticulture and landscape, those featured across the following pages are just a snapshot of Cornwall’s many public gardens.

Cornwall Garden Society
Before we delve into the many sites open for visitors this season, we feel that no exploration of Cornish gardens would be complete without a mention of the Cornwall Garden Society (CGS). A charity that exists to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches, CGS works to share knowledge about gardening, celebrate Cornwall’s rich garden heritage and conserve its natural environment. Although it has, by this time, already taken place, each spring sees CGS run the annual Spring Flower Show. Taking place at The Royal Cornwall Showground, visitors flock to enjoy dramatic displays of spring flowers and shrubs, along with exquisite exhibits by leading nurseries and floral designers. Described by The Telegraph as “the most highly regarded spring show in the country”, it’s a must-attend event for any gardening enthusiast, and certainly one to add to your diary for next year!

The Lost Gardens of Heligan
Trewithen Gardens
We begin our whistle-stop tour of Cornwall’s gardens with those that were once lost. These previously well-kept gardens quickly succumbed to the forces of nature as those who tended it left to fulfil their duty in the national First World War effort. Disappearing beneath hectares of heath and bramble, it wasn’t until 1990 that Sir Tim Smit and John Willis rediscovered the derelict gardens and set about enacting their restoration. Restored under the careful guidance of the duo, with Tim Smit also famed for leading the development of the Eden Project, Heligan now provides visitors with a cornucopia of horticultural explorations to engage and excite the whole family. With pleasure grounds to explore, some of Britain’s finest productive gardens, as well as the UK’s only outdoor jungle, The Lost Gardens of Heligan transport visitors far from the shores of Cornwall, to a world of romance, nostalgia and adventure.
Meaning “house of the trees”, Trewithen is home to 30 acres of woodland gardens and more than 200 acres of parkland. With so many different areas and species to discover, it’s a place that intrigues and enchants at every turn, one where no two days are the same and one in which the seasons play a key part. In the spring, expect exotic bursts of colour, with whites, reds, yellows and almost every shade of pink, before witnessing the summer bloom of hydrangeas and roses. Explore the wildlife and water gardens; examine an array of sculpture and conceptual art, and admire the historic plantings that continue to thrive here. With all of this and more to explore outdoors, not to mention the historic house which dates back to the Domesday survey of 1086 (open for tours Sunday to Tuesday, 28th April to 2nd July), and Trewithen offers visitors a heady cocktail of history and horticulture that’s sure to keep everybody enthralled. www.trewithengardens.co.uk

Trebah Garden
Where else can you follow the meandering trails of a sub-tropical garden, arriving eventually at a private beach where coffee, ice creams and staggering river views are available in abundance? Originally planted as a pleasure garden by the Fox family in the 19th century, the sloping gardens of Trebah, winding their way through a valley on the edge of the Helford River, have lived through a tumultuous history. The site served as a staging area for American troops ahead of the Second World War Normandy invasion; after the war, it changed hands several times. Famed racing driver, Donald Healey, bought the site and removed much of the wartime concrete from the beach. It was later sold again to Major Tony Hibbert and Eira Hibbert, who were persuaded by Cornwall Garden Society to begin a programme of work that would restore the garden to its former glory and eventually enable its opening to the public.

Glendurgan Garden
This historic and exotic wooded valley also leads down to the river. The garden itself is a beautiful, distinctive and intriguing collection of specimens interspersed with wildflower meadows. On site there is also a cherry laurel maze, based on a design taken from the Sydney Gardens in Bath. The Giant’s Stride rope swing is a simple yet enjoyable way for families to spend time together, whilst Durgan beach on the banks of the Helford connects to the South West
Coast Path, ideal for walkers looking to lace up their boots and strike out along the coast. Add to all of this the Apple Shed, full of nature-based activities, along with refreshments at the Tea House (currently undergoing renovations), and Glendurgan offers a day out for both families and horticultural die-hards alike

Terence Coventry Sculpture Park
Follow the coast south and you’ll eventually come to Coverack, one of the Lizard Peninsula’s most popular seaside villages. From here, head just a short distance inland and you’ll find the Terence Coventry Sculpture Park. Situated within three small meadows astride the old coast path, visitors can usually find around 25 monumental sculptures on display. With access to the park free of charge, it provides a wonderful chance to examine the work of Terence Coventry; rooted in a strong, figurative tradition, Coventry explores forms that are familiar to him, expressing his fundamental relationship with his environment and producing images that are at once enormously powerful and tender www.terencecoventry.com
Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens
If the work of Terence Coventry has whet your appetite for enjoying art al fresco, then be sure to make your next stop Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens. Overlooking St Michael’s Mount at the start of the Penwith Peninsula, this dramatic landscape comprises exotic and subtropical planting and provides a backdrop to contemplative and inspiring art by artists of international renown. With woods and a stream, an ever-evolving programme of contemporary artwork on display, not to mention an indoor gallery, shop, nursery, restaurant, and those aforementioned views over Mount’s Bay and the castle it’s named after, and this really is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore Cornwall’s best gardens.

This Grade II listed manor house with beautiful accommodation finds itself immersed in 15 acres of gorgeous Cornish spring gardens near Penzance. As a place to stay, it’s tough to beat, especially for those hoping to base themselves in prime position to explore all that Penwith has to offer. As a garden, it’s simply magnificent. Originally planted in the 19th century by Thomas Bolitho, it incorporates a magnificent collection of more than 300 camellias and magnolias, alongside one of the largest tree fern dells in Europe. A maze of paths take visitors to different areas of the site, adorned with shrubs and champion trees, some of which are more than a century old. Kids also love it here, especially when they take the Trewidden Trail, and the whole family is sure to appreciate the tea rooms, offering light lunches and Cornish cream teas, with produce of local provenance appearing on every plate www.trewidden.co.uk

Museum, and whether you’re visiting Scilly for the
We end our tour not on the mainland, but on the Isles of Scilly. Just a short hop from the Cornish coast, visitors to this archipelago are awed by its feeling of far-away shores. The fine golden sand and crystalline waters are an attraction in themselves and, depending on who you talk to, everybody who visits has a different favourite isle. In this case, our focus is on Tresco, and what has to be the jewel in the Isles of Scilly’s crown: Tresco Abbey Garden. Hailed as a “perennial Kew without the glass”, the garden is home to some 2,000 specimens from across the southern hemisphere and subtropics, and all of them flourish just 28 miles off the Cornish coast. The gardens change throughout the year; flowers bloom weeks ahead of the mainland in spring, the perfect tonic after a long, dreary winter, and in autumn, the seasonal reds, golds and ambers contrast magnificently with proteas, aloes and camellias. Even at the winter solstice, you’ll still find around 300 species in beautiful bloom. Add to its floral charm the sight of red squirrels and golden pheasants, not to mention the chance to browse island shipwrecks in the Valhalla Figurehead Museum, and whether you’re visiting Scilly for the day (which you can), or staying for a few, Tresco Abbey Garden is an essential addition to any island itinerary

A detached and beautifully presented coastal home in Port Isaac.
Immaculately presented with six bedrooms and stunning south-westerly views over the village of Port Isaac, Meadowstile lies just moments from the harbour, yet it enjoys a wonderful private setting. The village itself is famed as the home of Doc Martin, and loved for its impressive culinary offering thanks to Nathan Outlaw and his growing list of establishments here. It’s also within easy reach of everything that the wider north coast has to offer including the sailing hub of Rock, the Camel Estuary with its many on- and off-water activities, and of course Padstow, coveted for the heady mix of independent shops and galleries and its numerous celebrity-owned restaurants.
Inside the house, generous accommodation spans 3,500 square feet, with the painstaking

efforts of the current owners to improve and refurbish the property clearly evident. This has included the replacement of the electrics, plumbing and heating systems, as well as updating all of the bathrooms and kitchen, which includes Neff integrated appliances.
With a total of six bedrooms, three of which have en-suite facilities, there is space aplenty for a family and guests, which you’re sure to have in the warmer months.
Downstairs, the main living space is arranged over a vast 45-foot open floor plan, encompassing the kitchen, dining, sitting and garden rooms into one very sociable space.
Outside, good-sized gardens are a dream in the summer months, as is the advantage of off-road parking for several cars, a real rarity in Port Isaac. A paved terrace extends across the entire width of the house, joining on the southerly side to a sloping area of lawn. The lower garden is arranged as a large lawn, however an elevated paved terrace houses an enclosed, shingle-roofed seating area, welcoming you to relax on those long, balmy afternoons of summer.

reception room, large utility/boot room, cloakroom and cellar completes the picture on this floor. No less spacious, the first floor, which boasts a large landing and walk-in airing cupboard, has a master bedroom with en suite, four further bedrooms and a family bathroom.
The house is surrounded by large gardens –which are maintained within the rent – with wide gravelled areas surrounding the house flanked by lawns with mature trees. At the rear there is a wooded area with a wide variety of trees and shrubs as well as a cobbled courtyard with a two-story former stable and further useful storerooms. The property is approached through granite gate posts, with a sweeping gravelled driveway leading to a parking area with space for several vehicles, as well as garaging and an additional storage shed.
While its rural position is enviable, there is also easy access from here to the city of Truro and the Roseland Peninsula. In the
GARDEN
Immerse yourself in nature at one of Cornwall’s fabulous open gardens.
Trewidden Garden
One of the Great Gardens of Cornwall, Trewidden is a tranquil oasis home to a collection of magnolias, camellias and tree ferns, as well as the National Plant Collection of Rhododendron Kurume Azalea Wilson 50. These, combined with the historic links to west Cornwall’s mining heritage, make for a fascinating day out.
It’s an ideal garden to explore, walking along unusual twisty paths between banks of extraordinary flowering trees and shrubs. End your trip with a welcome Cornish cream tea in the tearoom, and Trewidden becomes the ultimate day out for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Cornwall’s fabulous gardens.
www.trewidden.co.uk
Enys Gardens
This largely natural garden situated between Truro and Falmouth has an air of history and mystique that makes it well worth a visit for those seeking an inspiring Cornish day out. Enys is well known for its bluebells in spring, but there is so much more to its gardens, attracting visitors throughout the year.
The Manor House is only open for various events during the season, so be sure to check the website for details. These include the Antiques Fair in April and the Art Exhibition in May, which sees the rustic house walls adorned with works created by local artists. Then, in July, there is the annual food, drink and music festival called Food Jam, before the season rounds off with another Antiques Fair in September.
The house and gardens are also used for occasional weddings, from small elopements to larger events for up to 120 people.

Pencarrow House & Gardens
Pencarrow, the much-loved home of the Molesworth-St Aubyn family for nearly 500 years, is set in 50 acres if Grade II* woodland and garden where dogs and children are most welcome.
The Georgian house boasts an impressive library with a secret door, elegant but ‘lived in’ reception rooms, period bedrooms and collections of family heirlooms, from everyday items to art and fascinating furnishings. In the gardens, superb conifers tower over azaleas, with a blaze of spring colour including magnolias, camellias, and varieties of rhododendron. As you explore, discover the ancient Celtic cross, Iron Age hill fort, Victorian lake and icehouse, grotto, restful Italian gardens and the enormous rock garden.
For a homemade cream tea or light lunch, be sure to stop by the Peacock café, before picking up the perfect gift in Pencarrow’s shop. www.pencarrow.co.uk
Lamorran Gardens
Visitors who have travelled the coast of southern France or northern Italy will recognise Lamorran Gardens; perched on a south-facing hillside overlooking the sea, it has been laid out to maximise its ‘Mediterranean setting’. Yes, there are many rhododendrons, evergreen azaleas and camellias, but Lamorran is unlike any other Cornish garden, playing host to no less than 35 different types of palm trees with over 200 specimens within the garden. Likewise, the number of species of Dicksonia and Cyathea tree ferns run into the dozens. There are ponds with waterfalls, streams, bridges and temples to encapsulate the Mediterranean influence which pervades the garden. This is a private garden open to the public every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10am to 5pm. Contact the team at info@lamorrangarden.co.uk, or head straight on down to the gardens on Upper Castle Road, St Mawes, TR2 5BZ. 01326 270800

PARADISE A plant lover’s
We pay a visit to Trevena Cross, who have been experienced growers of a huge range of plants for nearly 50 years, including rare and unusual specialities.
Awide variety of plants has been gracing the undercover planteria at Trevena Cross since January. Growing consistent plant stocks year round ensures supply is never an issue, and yet it is this time of the year when the garden centre becomes a real feast for the senses. As always the team are on track to deliver a truly sensational spring season for their eagerly anticipating customers and it’s now that truckloads of plants are brought down from the nursery daily to keep our gardens bursting with colour and interest. A striking selection of specimen palms, olives, tree ferns, shrubs, trees, perennials, hedging plants and more are joined by seasonal bedding and patio plants and a feast of grow-your-own goodies. Seasonlong, wow factor can be achieved with patio colour, right up until Christmas if temperatures remain mild.
The emphasis on grow-your-own has been taken to a whole new level in one of the nursery tunnels this year. There is a tunnel dedicated to growing a wide range of food for the Palm Tree Bistro, which opened on site on the 16th March. The bistro celebrates
quality local – largely Cornish – ingredients, as well as produce grown in the nursery at Trevena Cross.
The bistro team hand pick vegetables and herbs daily and then step into the kitchen to prepare them for the day’s dishes. This is a unique position to be in, and helps highlight Trevena’s place as a ‘grower’, extending the ‘grown on site’ message beyond just the plants it sells. Visitors can also enjoy the same produce they’ve eaten in the bistro at home, with plants grown for the bistro kitchen mirroring many of the varieties available to buy at the garden centre. This really will take the grow-yourown concept full circle. There are exciting times ahead; the outdoor offering of plants and outdoor sundries is complemented by a shop full of everything ‘gardens’ as well as a jungle-like houseplant section. Plus, the first spring for the Palm Tree Bistro is set to make it extra special!

FOR SPRING
If your doors and windows have seen one too many winters, perhaps it’s time to enlist the help of Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories.
As Cornwall comes to life, its meadows, hedgerows and coastal paths once again blooming with colour, it can leave many of us looking from the curb at our houses and feeling rather underwhelmed by how our own abodes are living up to the seasonal time of colour. What’s more, after such a long and stormy winter, older doors and windows may now be on their way out, their owners doubtful of their ability to withstand another full seasonal cycle.
If any of the above sounds familiar, then the experts at Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories can help. Manufacturing a range of uPVC windows and doors at the company factory in Redruth, now is the time to speak to the team and discover how uPVC solutions could well provide the long-term peace of mind that your windows and doors are up to the task.
With exceptional thermal efficiency, uPVC windows and doors from Philip Whear are designed in adherence to the latest standards. As uPVC is a low conductor of heat, so when fitted correctly it will form a closed air system that minimises heat loss experienced by other, less insulative materials. This means that,
especially for those with old and outdated fixtures, there could well be savings to be made when it comes to keeping your home warm next autumn and winter.
For those of you wanting the benefits of uPVC but prefer something with a dash more colour, fear not; with their own in-house paint booth, the Philip Whear team can completely customise the colour of your new doors and windows to match your home, its locale, along with your own preferences of style.
Add to all of this the latest in security standards, along with a variety of available styles including casement, tilt and turn, sliding and more, and if you’re thinking of sprucing up your home this spring with windows and doors that are guaranteed to both last and improve your curb appeal, then Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories can help.

SUCCESS Sustainable
Entrepreneurial spirit and a dedication to sustainability positions one Cornish business at the head of its field across the UK.
ABOVE Your dream drive awaits BELOW
Directors Tom and Olly
Oltco, today, is the UK’s leading supplier and installer of resin solutions. Operating on a national scale, it helps clients up and down the country to transform their spaces, assisting in projects across the residential and commercial market. But despite its growth since its founding in 2004, Oltco remains true to its roots, in fact the company HQ can still be found in its hometown of Newquay, right here in Cornwall.
From the very beginning, Founder and Director, Tom Stringer, has been passionate about offering innovative solutions. After training at Camborne School of Mines as a mining engineer, he began to specialise in non-slip floor solutions. This led him to epoxy and polyurethane resin coatings and screeds, from whence Tom soon set his sights on using his technical background and expertise to develop effective, aesthetic and practical resin
solutions for both domestic and commercial uses. This passion and innovation runs through the very heart of Oltco.
Later, in 2011, Tom was joined by Co-Director John Pearce, who came aboard to help to raise the profile of Oltco even further, enabling it to deliver services on a national scale.
Today, as the UK and Channel Islands’ leading sustainable resin-bound driveway specialist, Oltco has recycled the equivalent of 500 million plastic straws. How? By offering eco-conscious clients an alternative to traditional resin bound solutions, in the form of Oltco’s very own, world-first, sustainable solution, Recycle Bound.
It was at the beginning of 2019 when the two Cornish entrepreneurs came up with this unique solution to help tackle the issue of plastic waste littering the globe. Growing up in Cornwall, Tom and John had seen first-hand
HOME 34 | CORNWALL-LIVING.CO.UK
the devastating effect that plastic waste has on our coastline, and as they grew increasingly concerned about its effect on our planet as a whole, they decided to set about doing something about it. Now, more than four years later, Oltco's Recycle Bound solution is not just being used in residential driveways; in fact, it has, and continues to be used at some of the UK’s top hotels and attractions.
Indeed, this innovative product has proven a huge success, and with good reason. Recycle Bound is made utilising waste plastic (straws, drink bottles, food packaging) from a plastic recycling point, with each square metre comprising approximately 3,000 straws’ worth of plastic. This means that if Recycle Bound was laid on a standard 70 squaremetre driveway, the project would recycle the equivalent of 210,000 plastic straws!
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this amazing product has achieved recognition from multiple awards, including ‘Product of the Year’ at the Cornwall Business Awards, runner up for ‘Recycled Product of the Year’ in the National Recycling Awards, and ‘Sustainability Warrior’ at the British Franchise Association, an award category created specifically for Oltco to recognise its sustainability achievements. Impressive! It’s no wonder that attractions
across the UK including the Eden Project, National Trust Sheffield Park & Garden, and the location of the G7 Summit, Carbis Bay Hotel, have chosen to incorporate the product into their sites. In fact, to-date, Oltco has recycled the equivalent of 1.7 million plastic straws… at the Eden Project alone!
“It is so exciting and rewarding to see so many of our customers, both domestic and commercial, opting for Recycle Bound,” says Tom. “We have recycled the equivalent of 500 million plastic straws, which is incredible!”
John Pearce agrees. “Hitting that number after four years is a huge milestone and one that we’re incredibly proud of. We won’t be stopping there though, as the number of plastic straws that are recycled in our Recycle Bound installations increases every single day. So here’s to the next 500 million!”

OF THE SUN The power
Reduce your dependence on the national grid and save on energy bills with solar PV and battery storage from GreenGenUK.
AEXPERIENCE
DID YOU KNOW?
GreenGenUK also offers advanced heat pump systems. Their expertise extends to helping you upgrade your home's heating efficiency through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which provides a generous grant of £7500.
ll of us will have felt the steepening of energy bills in recent times, particularly over the last few months, but now that the days are growing brighter and longer, this could be the perfect time to look at our energy solutions. What if we told you that with a solution from the experts at GreenGenUK, the more electricity you used, the more you could save?
It might sound counterintuitive, but it’s true. With solar PV from GreenGenUK, not only can you save significantly on annual energy bills, you can also improve your home’s energy efficiency and the energy rating of your home. What’s more, at a time when we’re all looking for ways to ‘do our bit’ to foster a more sustainable way of living, solar PV can help reduce your home’s annual carbon emissions… by several tonnes!
In actual fact, there are a whole host of benefits to choosing solar PV to power your home, so many that you’ll quickly find yourself wondering why you haven’t already made the switch. For example, at present there is 0% VAT on battery storage installations. Battery storage enables you to reduce your energy bills even further by powering your home with surplus solar power. Oh, and because you
can store surplus power, charging your battery at lower off-peak rates, you save even more during peak times.
These technologies have emerged as pivotal in the planet’s fight to reduce carbon emissions, and already many homeowners are benefitting from it here in Cornwall. One recent GreenGenUK customer had a 16-panel solar array installed alongside a GivEnergy battery. With the main goal being to improve the energy efficiency of their home, along with reducing dependence on the national grid and minimising their carbon footprint, all whilst saving on energy bills, the end result delivered on all counts. “I’ve had a very positive experience with GreenGenUK,” explains the homeowner. “I found the installation process smooth and the engineers very polite and helpful. They also came in first place for cost!”

WEATHERING
How are your garden fences coping with the increasingly violent winter storms?
One of the perks of living in Cornwall is seeing its many seasonal moods. In the summer, the vibrant greens and opalescent blues invite us outside to explore nature, and in the autumn nothing quite beats the crunch of leaves underfoot as we stomp around our favourite rural routes. Of course, it also leaves our homes exposed to the winds of winter, which it seems, this past season, are only getting worse. Indeed, it’s lovely to be cosied up indoors next to the woodburner whilst a gale howls outside the curtained windows, but what’s not enjoyable is assessing the damage the next day, with sheds, trees and fences in particular having taken the brunt of the weather.
This makes spring a welcome change; the winds are dying down and it’s (mostly) starting to dry up, which affords us the opportunity to get outside and do something about those dilapidated wooden fences that more closely resemble splinters than the boundaries they once marked. If this sounds familiar, it’s unsurprising; wooden fences around the country have been destroyed en-masse over the recent winter, which was the stormiest on record since 2015! Such wanton destruction has left homeowners scratching their heads, determined that there must be a better, more resilient solution. Fortunately, there is.
Colourfence, originally built to withstand the
the storm
demanding climate in Australia, is made from Colourbond steel, a high-tensile, pre-painted material that needs little or no upkeep, and which is guaranteed to withstand gusts of up to 135mph. Installed by dedicated experts and requiring virtually no maintenance (bar the odd, spring-time hose down), it’s also a beautiful addition to any garden, available in a full range of colours to suit your space.
In actual fact, according to Olly Daglish, director of Colourfence Cornwall, wood has become a short-term choice for fencing in recent times. “The story is always the same,” he explains. “Customers are increasingly fed up with the upkeep and short life span of their wooden fences. Especially now with the changing climate and growing intensity of storms, they’re searching for something that will last and stand up to such weather, which is why so many people are coming to us.”

IS COMING! The sunshine
With summer approaching, Katy Falconer, Operations Manager at John Bray Cornish Holidays, shares her excitement about the coming months.
Working with the owners of more than 250 north Cornwall holiday homes during the winter months on maintenance and upkeep, Katy explains: “We always love this time of year. With most of the hard work behind us, it can only mean the long-awaited summer season is nearly here!
“For our team who live and work in the region, the busy, fast-paced summer is what it’s all about: seeing happy families arrive in the sunshine, ready for a week of exploring the coastline, dining on an abundance of the finest local seafood, and of course, relaxing in their luxury self-catering accommodation. Our guests are able to experience wonderful holidays, and our owners are pleased to have a wealth of bookings in their diaries. It’s really win-win, as they say!”
Katy explains that at present, many holiday home owners are eager to hear how busy the team expects the 2024 season to be. “We’re delighted to report that indications are promising! Customer demand is high, and at the time of writing, bookings for our spring weeks are either on a par with 2023 levels, or up year on year, with many properties already boasting more than 25 bookings for 2024.”
As a study in success, Katy points us to The Coach House near Padstow, a lovingly
renovated property set within a beautiful garden. “New with us last July, the property went on to achieve 19 bookings by the end of the season, and has already secured an incredible 35 for 2024. Rockhaven Garden is another great example, this time near Rock, which achieved an impressive 40 bookings last year, and which already has an amazing 34 secured for the coming season!” With so much demand for accommodation in this highly sought-after part of Cornwall, says Katy, “we are actively looking to expand our portfolio of self-catering stays.” With more than 50 years’ experience in holiday letting along this beautiful stretch of coastline – encompassing Rock, Padstow, Polzeath, Daymer Bay, Port Isaac and beyond – Katy and the John Bray Cornish Holidays team are proud to support their owners with all aspects of holiday letting. “From bookings and administration, to our full property management and maintenance option, we can do as much or little as required.”

FOOD Love
Words by Jude Kereama
Looking forward to Porthleven Food Festival as it kick-starts the festival year in Cornwall on its 15th anniversary.
é ABOVE
A
The popularity and longevity of the Porthleven Food Festival still surprises me, considering how the idea was born. It all started from a conversation I had with a couple of friends, Dai and Hannabeth and my late wife Jane. We were sitting down on a Saturday night at the end of a hard week having a glass of wine or two thinking about how we could increase awareness of local food and suppliers and a way to attract more people to Porthleven. Simply put, that is how the Porthleven Food and Music Festival started. We quickly formed a small committee and, along with an army of local volunteers, the very first festival opened with a small marquee on the harbour head and a full-on gusty south-westerly wind blowing in… and what a success that very first festival was, with about 5000 people turning up for the day. Nowadays, we are getting nearer to 45,000 visitors for the weekend. It is such an
honour to be Patron of the festival and it really has grown into a firm favourite in the Cornish festival calendar.
It now attracts the best chefs from all around the UK and this year we have a fantastic line up of culinary talent to tantalise taste buds and inspire the inner chef in all of us. We have a wide range of chefs from different culinary cultures and I can’t wait to see them entertain us with their own styles. We also have many local talented chefs doing demonstrations alongside Great British Menu stars – there really is something for everyone.
Sadly, Antony Worrall Thompson will be missing this year for the very first time due to family commitments and he will be sorely missed from our entertaining cook-off and, of course, for his humour. But don’t worry, he will be back! This year I will be opening the demonstrations on the Friday with the head chefs from both my restaurants; Ross Sloan

from Kota and Marcus Houghton from Kota Kai. I am also looking forward to opening the demonstrations on Saturday as well with my old mate, Tom Brown. Tom has been flying the Cornish flag with his eponymous London restaurants Cornerstone and Pearly Queen and he and I will be rustling up some incredible seafood dishes with cocktails to match from the Bearded Barman himself, Chris Jarrett. I believe this we might just be our best line-up yet!
To celebrate the festival in my restaurants this year, Kota Kai will be holding a grain-versus-grape feast on the Friday. The night will be all about six courses matched with beer and wine. Sharp’s Brewery’s beer sommelier, Ed Hughes will be matching the beers, while Katie Rosser of Enotria Winecellars will match the wines. It’s set to be a very entertaining evening. For the rest of the weekend, we will be cooking small plates matched with beer and wine with DJs playing during the day. There might be even a pop-up Tequila, Mezcal bar if we can finish it on time…
Over at Kota, we will be hosting a champagne and seafood bar, which will run all day, all weekend. There will be dishes provided by both Kota and Great British Menu chefs
allowing people the chance to try high-end small dishes and sample fine wines in a sitdown, relaxed atmosphere, whether that be in the restaurant or in our outdoor seating area (weather permitting!).
Aside from all the chef demonstrations, feasts and stalls, there will be also be the everpopular incredible farmer’s market packed full of amazing ingredients to buy and enjoy at home. Whether it’s from a food or drink producer, there’s always an incredible selection of goodies on offer. As ever, all around the festival there will be different stages hosting fantastic music and DJs all weekend – this year’s line-up looks amazing, with so many great bands I can’t wait to see. I hope you can join us from 26th to 28th April for some Porthleven Food Festival fun.

AT THE FESTIVAL A FEAST
Chef Rupert Cooper of Philleigh Way Cookery School and Cove Café will be hosting this year’s Feast Nights at Porthleven Food Festival.
After the huge success of last year’s Feast Nights, hosted in the historic waterside Net Loft, they return for 2024 with a delicious four-course feast on the Friday and Saturday night. With a delicious menu created by chef Rupert Cooper, guests can enjoy a festive feast in an atmosphere that brims with rustic charm and some incredible harbour-views. Diners will enjoy their feast at long shared tables, bringing conviviality and shared experience to a menu that boasts locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.
Formerly a professional rugby player, Rupert swapped the field for the kitchen in 2018, from work experience in Michelin star restaurants to taking on a head chef role in a busy French bistro. Following his passion for food, Rupert is head chef and owner of
Philleigh Way, a Cornish cookery school renowned for its authentic and refreshingly unpretentious approach to cooking great food. In May 2023, Rupert took over Cove Café, nestled within the cliffs above Riviere Towans beach in Hayle.
If you’re looking for an immersive foodie experience at this year’s Porthleven Food Festival, which runs from 26th to 28th April 2024, then be sure to book tickets as the feasts sell out quickly. If you can’t make this year’s festival, then we are delighted to showcase the recipe for one of Rupert’s dishes that will be served on the night, for you to prepare and enjoy at home.

A YEARto remember
As it approaches its tenth anniversary, The Rising Sun in Truro has plenty planned to make this year one for the ages.
It’s going to be a big year for the team at The Rising Sun in Truro. October will see the team’s ten-year anniversary, and they’ve already started the year with a bang having received the exciting news that they are being included in the top 100 Gastropubs list!
Conceived in 2009 with the purpose of recognising the stars in the gastropubs industry, the list is created by collecting votes from more than 100 key industry professionals. Judges come from leading pub businesses, editors of media brands and food writers from around the UK, and for pubs like The Rising Sun, to be a part of the list is no small achievement.
To celebrate this and the upcoming anniversary, Managing Director Katie Hannon explains: “We are making this our best year yet with lots of fun events throughout the year. We have had an industry event already, a wine-paired lunch with a producer focus, and we have lots more to look forward to, including a champagne dinner at the start of May. This will offer guests a tasting menu paired with one of our favourite champagne houses, Drappier, whose fascinating history dates back hundreds of years. Also with an eye to the future, it was the first carbon neutral champagne house to produce exquisite, sustainable champagne.”
Later in the year, Katie and co will host an intimate and relaxed evening of cigar and rum / whiskey pairings, hosted by the incredibly knowledgeable John Strange. “The evening will be set in our courtyard garden surrounded by candlelight and around our outdoor log burner,” Katie reveals.
There will also be some chilled summer weekly seafood barbeques throughout the warmer months, with acoustic music and DJ beats. These require no bookings, meaning you can just turn up and enjoy the food and ambience. Oh, and if you’re planning on enjoying Cornwall’s festival scene, you’ll find Tom Hannon in action (owner and Chef at The Rising Sun) at Rock Oyster Festival, Falmouth Week and Truro Food and Drink Festival.
Topped off with a big event to celebrate their ten-year anniversary, with details embargoed for now but to be announced soon, 2024 is set to be a big one for Katie, Tom and the team.

Shapes emerge when layers of paint are applied and charcoal, pencil and pastel marks define them. Found objects from the beach and observations of the natural landscape inspire her and prompt ideas for sketches and studies. Dreams of a warless world
Natalia Kolpakova is an award-winning graphic artist and designer based in Kyiv, Ukraine, specialising in art and fashion, and founder of Nakol.art. Now living in Falmouth, with her 10-year-old daughter under the temporary protection of the Home for Ukraine program, Natalia will be exhibiting her niche collection of limited-edition silk scarves at The Poly, Falmouth from 4th to 13th June. “Unfortunately, much of our current knowledge of Ukraine includes the names of cities and regions that have been bombed and depictions of horrific war crimes. I want to show that beauty, culture and design are also important components of Ukraine and still exist, and that the refugees who live among us are people are very skilled people with real lives,” explains Natalia.
The exhibition project, Warless (which is free to view) reflects Natalia’s hope for Ukraine and her faith in the victory of creation over destruction. Although some of the works for the upcoming exhibition were created before the start of the war, they contain subtle hints, forebodings, and multi-layered responses to the challenges of external circumstances. “I see a future where the Ukrainian people can prosper without the constant threat of war; where development can flourish in all directions, and where Ukraine can be a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. I invite you to join me in celebrating the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian people and supporting their ongoing struggle for peace,” adds Natalia. A Cornish marine artist specialising in photorealistic oil paintings of Cornwall’s seascapes and yachts, Jamie takes inspiration from nature and the array of stunning views we’re surrounded by in the Duchy. His aim: to produce quality paintings replicating the beauty of these views, capturing the nuances of light and how they’re affected by the weather, time of day and seasons. This combination of factors creates
an infinite possibility of scenes and moods, all of which can be pleasing to the eye for differing reasons, and this is highlighted by the diversity of work within his portfolio.

Bring the surf into your home
Working with bespoke furniture for over a decade, Michael Jenkin makes anything from fine furniture to custom kitchens and fitted bedrooms. But his real passion lies in surfing, and when he discovered that it was possible to blend that passion with the art of fine furniture making, Bespoke Surf was born.
From mirrors, hangers and picture frames, to tealight holders, shelves and decorative boards, Michael’s work allows you to bring the surf into your home. Creating all of his work from start to finish, he starts with selecting the raw timber, seeing each project through to the application and buffing at the end of the line. He also sources his materials as locally as possible, supporting the Cornish community in doing so. Timbers are often handpicked for their aesthetic qualities, and he uses no dyes, stains or paint in the process. This allows the natural patterns of the wood to really shine, making each of Michael’s pieces one of a kind.

TO RUN A reason
Cornwall Hospice Care’s Falmouth Run once again proves a huge success.
On Sunday 17th March, the 12th annual Falmouth Half Marathon took place. Organised by Cornwall Hospice Care and supported by Falmouth Running Club, it forms part of the Cornwall Glass Road Running Grand Prix Series, and it’s only growing in popularity. In fact, this year’s event sold out for entry tickets!
Starting at 10am, 622 runners embarked on the 13.1 mile route, with Neil Eddy crossing the line first, clocking a time of just over an hour and 15 minutes! “I’ve not run Falmouth before,” says Neil. “It’s a super race and super tough, I don’t think you can get a road race much tougher than that with all the hills. It’s very well organised with fantastic volunteers the whole way around.”
Derek Thomas was another entrant. Using Run Falmouth as a training session for the forthcoming London Marathon, Derek not only ran to raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care, he is also a volunteer trustee for the charity. “The run is good, quite hilly and a bit wet in places!” he explains. As with many of the other runners, Derek is
delighted to be a part of the event and to help support the charity, heralding it for the amazing work it does for the community across the county.
Race Director, Jane Appleton, is delighted with another successful event. “We’ve had another amazing Falmouth Run! The people, the place and the atmosphere have been wonderful, even the sunshine came out for us. I’d like to thank the team at Princess Pavilions, Falmouth Running Club, Devon and Cornwall 4x4, event sponsors The Sapphire Running Zone, Omega Medical, and the army of volunteers, without whom we just couldn’t have this half-marathon.”
With final numbers starting to come in, Jane explains that the total funds raised for Cornwall Hospice Care stand at over £39,744, an amazing figure to help the charity continue its vital work in supporting end of life care for patients and their families in Cornwall.

SMILE ABOUTSomething to
Put your smile in safe hands with the dental professionals at The Treatment Centre, Truro.
Astate of the art, second-generation dental practice focused on providing quality dental care with prevention at its core, the goal at The Treatment Centre is to help clients maintain a healthy smile for life. With that in mind, it’s only natural that the team would offer Invisalign – the world’s leading clear alignment system. Serving as a modern alternative to traditional braces, Invisalign, as the name suggests, is transparent and super subtle. It’s also removable, which makes cleaning your teeth both easy and comfortable, and it works, gradually re-aligning your teeth without the difficulties associated with more traditional braces.
At The Treatment Centre, as part of your Invisalign consultation, the team can provide a digital scan to show you how your teeth would look after treatment. What’s more, aligners are made to order and unique for every patient, and as your teeth move into their new positions, you’ll receive new aligners to ensure the treatment continues to work as effectively. You can regularly check in and send updates with scans from home; Invisalign really is a transformative solution for those who’ve avoided classic metal braces.
Delivered by Principal Dentist, Dr Anna Taylor – a member of the Royal College of Surgeons who has been appointed by Bristol University to be a joint foundation trainer for new dentists. Anna holds a teaching post at Peninsula Dental School and this year obtained her MSc in Restorative Dentistry. She is also an elected member of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly local dental committee. This expertise allows Anna to focus on each patient’s journey, ensuring the right results are achieved, with the added benefit that she is also able to enhance Invisalign treatment with a cosmetic finish. What also sets The Treatment Centre apart is the patient experience and, in particular, how personal it is. The team focus on building relationships with their patients so that they are guided and supported throughout, as Invisalign really is a journey. In short, as an Invisalign patient at The Treatment Centre, you will be in safe hands.

IbodiesEMPOWERING MINDS AND
A dialogue on mental health and cancer rehabilitation through the eyes of Pants Cancer Charity.
n a world where conversations around mental health and physical well-being are gaining prominence, a recent event at the Mansion House in London, held exclusively for Leaders of Great Britain members, served as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Jeannette Preston, the founder of the Pants Cancer Charity, and Steve Winnan, whose training included studying at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, Westminster as a Cancer Rehab Exercise Specialist, joined forces at the prestigious venue to shed light on the integral connection between mental resilience and physical recovery in the face of cancer.
The occasion was marked by an insightful discussion centered around the theme of ‘mindset’, led by none other than Jonny Wilkinson, the renowned rugby legend turned mental health advocate. Wilkinson’s own journey of overcoming personal challenges resonated deeply with the audience, offering a profound perspective on the power of mindset in navigating life's hurdles.
For Jeannette and Steve, the intersection of mental health and cancer rehabilitation holds a special significance. Their respective experiences in supporting individuals affected by cancer have highlighted the critical role played by a positive mindset in the healing process. Beyond the physical rigours of treatment, the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis can often be overwhelming. However, as Jeannette and Steve emphasised, cultivating a resilient mindset can serve as a formidable ally in overcoming adversity.
Jeannette’s vision in founding the Pants Cancer Charity stems from her own experience overcoming cancer and her unwavering commitment to providing holistic support to
cancer patients and survivors. “Once Steve got me back to fitness after having womb cancer and I began to run, breathe and speak at the same time, Cancer Rehab was born,” explains Jeannette. By addressing not only the physical aspects of the disease but also the psychological and emotional dimensions, Jeannette and her team are paving the way for a more comprehensive approach to cancer care. Similarly, Steve’s expertise as a Cancer Rehabilitation Exercise Specialist underscores the importance of integrating physical activity into the recovery journey. Through tailored exercise programs and personalised support, Steve empowers individuals to regain strength, mobility, and confidence following cancer treatment. Together, Jeannette’s and Steve’s presence at the Mindset event symbolised a unified effort to foster a culture of resilience and empowerment within the cancer community. By sharing their insights and experiences, they offered a beacon of hope to those grappling with the dual challenges of cancer and mental health. As the dialogue on mental health continues to evolve, events like this serve as catalysts for change, breaking down stigma and fostering a more inclusive and supportive society. Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, we can build a future where mental health is recognised as an integral component of overall well-being, and where individuals facing cancer are empowered to embrace life with courage and resilience.
