Welcome
From the Editor
to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!
It’s difficult not be taken in by the thrill and beauty of outdoor adventure in Cornwall. With sea on all sides for surfing and dipping, cliffs for coasteering, the South West Coast Path for hikes and rambles, endless trails for cycling, moors for exploring and, of course, some great open-air attractions, the Duchy is a veritable playground for outdoor enthusiasts. In this month’s cover feature, Jamie Crocker has been having some adrenalinefuelled fun finding out some of the best places to get outside and have fun.
If you’re looking to buy a holiday home in Cornwall, then purchasing a lodge or caravan on one of its many luxury parks could be a cost-effective way of securing a lifetime of amazing holidays in the Duchy. Our Cornwall Living Getaways supplement, from page 39 , showcases some fantastic locations with excellent buying options. If you’re not in the market to purchase, then why not treat yourself to a stay? Many of the parks are within walking distance of the beach and all offer high-end facilities set to make your holiday a dream come true.
We’ve also been exploring one of my favourite parts of Cornwall this issue, Penwith. This area of west Cornwall is located at the westernmost tip of the county and is steeped in history and heritage. Its rugged peninsula is renowned for its ancient landscapes, dotted with prehistoric sites such as stone circles, standing stones and burial mounds, reflecting its rich archaeological significance. The area’s mining heritage, particularly for tin and copper, flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries, leaving a legacy of historic engine houses and coastal mines that stand sentinel along the coastline. Fishing villages such as Mousehole and Newlyn, with their narrow streets and picturesque harbours, are testament to the area’s maritime traditions, while the main town of Penzance is a thriving hub. Turn to page 67 to read our Discover Penwith supplement.
Chef patron, Jude Kereama joins us once again with some barbecue inspiration from page 62 , while Cornish Rock Gin (from page 64 ) serves up some summer cocktails to enjoy. Art, as ever, is a highlight in this issue and from page 79 we showcase the plethora of creative talent to be found across the Duchy.
Last, but by no means least, we are hugely excited to announce the arrival of the Cornwall Living Awards 2024 . Turn to page 23 to find out how you can nominate your favourite Cornish businesses.
...happy reading!

The Fontana Tranquillity Garden has quite a story to tell. It was first designed by 92-yearold Derek Bishop from Tywardreath and Kim Parish of Landscapes of Distinction at Mitchell, to be showcased at last year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live event in Birmingham (2023). It won a Silver Merit and has since then been transported back to Cornwall and donated by Derek to Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell.
“We wanted the garden to have a purpose,” says Derek who owns the beautiful Fontana Garden at Trenython on the outskirts of Tywardreath. “We had the idea of donating it to the hospice where it will now provide a place to find peace, comfort and calm for patients, their carers, families and friends and the staff and volunteers.”
It’s taken a year to recreate the garden and the centre-piece Tree House in the grounds of the hospice aided by the help of an army of staff, volunteers and local companies. Their
collective efforts came together on Sunday 23rd June 2024 when the hospice garden was officially opened by Derek Bishop in front of an audience of invited guests.
Lisa Shephard, Cornwall Hospice Care’s Clinical Lead, says, “We’re extremely humbled by Derek Bishop’s generous donation of the garden. It’s well thought out design has created very accessible areas which means we can take patients out in their beds and in wheelchairs.”
The team at Cornwall Hospice Care have made a film that details the extraordinary story of the garden which can be viewed at www.youtube.com/@Cornwallhospicecare

Black Rum is back!
With their continuing passion to create great tasting spirits, Copperfish Distillery keeps to a simple mantra “proper spirits made proper”. It sometimes results in some products being temporarily out of stock. However, the great news is the Black Rum is back! Punching in at a gunpowder strength of 57% this is something special to savour. They use a blend of some specially sourced dark cane sugars and selected molasses to create this exceptional rum. It is then aged in an imported Spanish sherry barrel which infuses a it with a rich fruity edge. A superb sipping rum, it is available in 70cl and 35cl bottles. The rear covered courtyard is practical for storing surfboards and leads to the utility room. Steps ascend to the sun deck and continue through the terraced gardens, all of which boast far-reaching views.
Porthtowan itself is a charming, uncommercialised village known for its excellent surfing and stunning Blue Flag beach. It's part of a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, featuring Gullyn Rock, Diamond Rock and scenic sandstone and slate cliffs.

WINTER
Now is the perfect opportunity to install your heating system to keep you warm this winter.
Despite the fact that summer has just begun, those ever-colder winters still linger in the backs of our minds, so we spoke to GreenGenUK for some of their thoughts on how to efficiently and sustainably heat your home this winter. They believe that preparation for the cooler months should begin now, with either servicing or installing your own heat pump. With a minimum of eight new installations each week, their air source heat pump can heat your home sustainably and keep old Jack Frost at bay. Each project and installation that they are tasked with aims to be technically proficient, dedicated to the client and, most important of all, manage and assist in counteracting the continual changes in our environment
Recently, one of their projects achieved remarkable sustainability and energy efficiency. This project, a home in Porthleven, Cornwall, showcased a combination of a a JA solar PV array (producing 4000 kWh annually), a GivEnergy hybrid battery solution, a Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump, a MyEnergi Zappi EV charger and an Eddi hot water diverter. These installations worked together seamlessly allowed for a truly environmentally friendly home. Solar panels provided renewable energy for the heat pump and other systems, while advanced insulation and underfloor heating ensured optimal thermal performance and reduced heating and hot water usage to just 250kWh. Not only that, but the hot water diverter and
EV charging further enhanced the use of renewable energy. The aim was for a negative carbon impact of less than 0.5 tons per year, so creating a positive effect on the environment, even during the winter. All of this combined allowed the property to attain an A-rating on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), proving that you can still sat warm in winter while helping the planet.
These methods of heating are not only sustainable but can also be affordable. Recent updates to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) lead to a £7,500 voucher being available towards your installation. In addition, Ofgem has removed requirement for mandatory cavity wall and loft insulation, making the voucher now more accessible than ever.
The BUS is great for anybody looking to replace their fossil fuel heating system with a renewable heat pump. The £7,500 grant is upfront and deducted from the amount you pay and GreenGenUK deal with all the application!
Continual ongoing improvements to technologies and operations allows GreenGenUK to heat your home in the most efficient, effective and sustainable fashion that you can access at an affordable price.

SOLUTION A sustainable
Surfaces that not only look good, they do good, as we found out in conversation with Oltco.
ABOVE
Oltco, the UK and Channel Islands’ leading sustainable resin bound driveway specialist, has recycled the equivalent of 500 million plastic straws using its world-first sustainable resin bound solution, Recycle Bound.
Originally founded as a family business in 2004, Oltco began selling non-slip resin solutions for homes and businesses from the corner of the UK, Cornwall. Since then, at the beginning of 2019, two entrepreneurs came up with a unique solution to help tackle the issue of plastic waste littering the globe.
Now, over four years after the inception of this idea, Oltco’s Recycle Bound solution has recycled the equivalent of over 500 million plastic straws by offering eco-conscious clients an alternative to traditional resin bound solutions, in the form of Oltco’s very own, world-first, sustainable solution.
Recycle Bound is made utilising waste plastic (straws, plastic drink bottles and plastic food packaging) from a plastic recycling point, with each square metre consisting of the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws. Therefore, if Recycle Bound was laid on a standard 70 square metre drive, the equivalent of 210,000 plastic straws would be recycled in the process.
Growing up in Cornwall, Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, co-directors of Oltco, saw first-hand the devastating effect plastic waste has on our coastline and they grew increasingly concerned about its effect on our planet as a whole, so they decided to set about doing something about it.
Tom Stringer comments: “We launched Recycle Bound in 2019 and now, four years later, we have recycled the equivalent of 500 million plastic straws which is incredible. It is so exciting and rewarding to see so many of
our customers, both domestic and commercial, opting for Recycle Bound.”
Their work is not only sustainable, it’s also stylish, adding a touch of class to any surface. Tom, who trained at Camborne School of Mines and eventually specialised in non-slip floor solutions, used his technical background and expertise to develop effective, practical and aesthetic resin solutions. This is on top of their incredibly eco-friendly aspects and a passion and innovation that runs through the very heart of Oltco. It’s not only driveways they cover, they branch out to balconies and pathways and more. Quite simply, Oltco is not limited in what they do and what they can accomplish with their solutions. Despite their large success and wide range of work in the UK and the Channel Islands, they stay true to their roots, as their HQ can still be found in their hometown of Newquay, Cornwall.
And it’s not just being used in residential driveways; in fact, it has, and continues to be used at some of the UK’s top hotels and attractions. Recycle Bound has been installed across the UK including the Eden Project, National Trust Sheffield Park & Garden, Bodmin Jail Hotel and the location of the G7 Summit, Carbis Bay Hotel, Blackpool Sea Life Centre and RHS Harlow Carr. To date, Oltco has recycled the equivalent of 1.7 million plastic straws in the resin pathways at the Eden Project.

Recycle Bound has achieved recognition from multiple awards including ‘Product of the Year’ award at the Cornwall Business Awards, runner up for ‘Recycled Product of the Year’ in the National Recycling Awards and ‘Sustainability Warrior’ at the British Franchise Association, an award category that was created specifically for Oltco to recognise its sustainability achievements.
Johnny Pearce added: “Hitting 500 million plastic straws after four years is a huge milestone and one that we are incredibly proud of. We won’t be stopping here as the number of plastic straws that are recycled in our Recycle Bound installations increases every day. Here’s to the next 500 million.”

WHAT’S IN STORE?
Britannia Lanes’ state of the art self-storage facilities are transforming the lives of customers across Cornwall.
Britannia Lanes has become a significant player in the self-storage industry over recent years, offering innovative and highly secure storage solutions to meet the growing demand in Cornwall and beyond. With facilities in Falmouth, Truro, and upcoming locations in Hale (opening October 2024) and St Austell (2025), Britannia Lanes is addressing the diverse storage needs of both individuals and businesses.
The rapid expansion of Britannia Lanes self-storage facilities highlights a growing demand for additional storage space. As the self-storage industry experiences a significant growth phase – the UK is only now catching up to markets like the US and Australia where selfstorage is a well-established norm – Britannia Lanes is leading the way. The increasing need for self-storage is driven by varying factors, including house sizes, high property rates for businesses and the necessity for secure storage of personal and professional items.
Britannia Lanes offers a range of benefits that cater to both residential and commercial customers. For businesses, self-storage provides a cost-effective solution to reduce overheads associated with larger premises. By storing stock, tools, and equipment in a separate, secure location, businesses can optimise their operational space and save on rent and business rates. This flexibility is particularly advantageous for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) looking to streamline their operations without compromising on storage needs.
For homeowners, Britannia Lanes self-storage is a boon, especially for those moving, renovating or simply requiring extra space. Modern homes with contemporary designs often lack sufficient storage and so self-storage units offer a practical extension of home space. This is particularly relevant in Cornwall, where charming cottages and harbourside properties often come without garages or room for a shed.
Britannia Lanes self-store units offer the highest level of security with state-of-the-art technology. Customers can access their storage units through a secure app, eliminating the need for traditional PIN codes and enhancing security. This 24/7 access is particularly beneficial for businesses that may need to retrieve items outside of regular hours.
The units are climate-controlled, ensuring that items remain in optimal condition, free from damp and mould – a crucial feature given Cornwall's coastal climate. This makes them an ideal choice for storing valuable and delicate items, such as collectibles, documents and hobby equipment like boats and surfboards.
By offering secure, flexible and accessible storage options to suit all needs and budgets, Britannia Lanes self-storage services are designed to make their customer’s life easier and that little bit more organised!

Celebrating its 14th birthday this summer, Eve Hughes Interior Design can help you realise your interior dream.
Drawing upon Eve’s extensive 24-year career, her passion for interior design is evident. After nearly nine years running the interiors department at a well-established soft furnishings store in Truro, her love for fabric and its transformative power in interiors really blossomed. Eve used this extensive experience to launch her own interior design company in 2010, where her deep understanding of her clients’ needs, always ensure that their personal style comes to the fore. Her company’s reputation centres around an inherent flair for design, colour and meticulous attention to detail.

Testament to this is a recent comment from customer Ali: “I can wholeheartedly recommend Eve for her interior design skills. She researched and suggested perfect options for our project that I would probably never have thought of. The craftsmanship and installation were brilliant – I wouldn’t hesitate to use her services again and again.”
The design process begins with an introductory meeting, which can be arranged at the studio, the client's home, or on-site. For clients managing projects from a distance, flexible arrangements can be made to accommodate their needs. The initial meeting focuses on discussing ideas, budget and gaining an understanding of the space and the client's vision. A rural IDYLL
Escape to the secluded Cornish countryside and discover luxury award-winning cottages and villas at Whalesborough.
Set in 450 acres of farmland that runs down to the north Cornish coast near Bude, Whalesborough is renowned for its outstanding five-star accommodation, its natural environment, mindfulness, relaxation, sustainability, family-friendly experiences, and its field-to-fork ethos.
Here, located in an idyllic meadow-setting blessed with stunning countryside views, is its collection of architecturally outstanding four-bedroom eco-villas, each swathed in green roofs with wildflower blankets. Built using exposed timber cladding and traditional Cornish stone, these luxury single-storey villas wear their eco-credentials well.
Of the original eight, just three remain available to buy. Each one is a short walk from Bude canal, and within easy reach of golden beaches, stunning headlands and wild farm walks. Each comes with a large open-plan
kitchen, dining and living area, four luxurious bedrooms with ensuites, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the private decking; connecting you to the great outdoors. Complemented by large private gardens, al-fresco dining, and stunning countryside views, this glorious corner of Cornwall is that touch of luxury that you’ve been waiting for.
Each eco-villa comes with access to the spa resort’s enviable leisure facilities. These include a heated indoor pool with swimin spa, sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi, a well-equipped gym, a fabulous outdoor pool, and miles of walks through fields and woodland down to the nearby Water Cove Beach.
The on-site W Club spa has three treatment rooms and a talented team who are on hand to help you relax offering everything from salt and oil scrubs to deep tissue and hot stone treatments. Using Cornwall’s own Gaia essential oils and botanical extracts you
can look forward to aromatherapy sessions, exfoliation techniques, pedicures, manicures, facials, head, and body massages. When it comes to life at Whalesborough, it’s all about resetting and relaxation.
But more than that, the resort is the perfect location for family forays and wonderful childhood memories too. Whalesborough
Little Farmers club gives children the chance to have fur and feather encounters with everything from pygmy goats and piglets to alpacas. Added to outdoor play areas with climbing frames and swings, an adventure playground, and a well-equipped under six’s playroom, Whalesborough creates a world of wonder for your little ones.
While the eco-lodges are self-catering, the great thing about Whalesborough is that you can order delicious pre-prepared meals for the fridge. Alternatively, you can dine out on-site at The Weir Restaurant and Bistro. Celebrating food and produce from Whalesborough’s fields and from the local area, head chef Kai Taylor, former AA Rosette and a Michelin Bib Gourmand holder, creates delightful dishes that can be devoured overlooking Whalesborough’s tranquil lake, the winding River Neet, its mature woodland, and the farm’s rolling countryside.
Located close to the sea, staying at Whalesborough is as much about days on the beach as it is about lazing in the garden or taking a dip in the heated indoor or outdoor pool. That means you can relax on sunkissed sand or get out into the sea for surfing and bodyboarding experiences. But that’s not all. Summerleaze Beach at Bude is home to one of the country’s finest semi-natural tidal pools, set on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Perfect for dips with the family at low tide, or invigorating early morning laps, it’s just a towpath walk away, and is flanked by Crooklets beach offering golden sands and brightly coloured beach huts.
If music’s more your thing, Bude has its own Jazz Festival (late August/early September), and a Folk Festival. The Leopollooza music festival (July) takes place just eight miles away, and Bude is blessed with its own Food Festival and Literary Festival too. Whalesborough also has summer chill and grill sessions with live music on site. For days out, Boscastle and Tintagel are to the south, and just over the border is the hauntingly beautiful, traffic-free cobbled fishing village of Clovelly, as well as RHS Garden Rosemore.
Fully managed and marketed on your behalf, with yields expected to reach £90,000 a year, less annual on-site services and maintenance charges, these luxury eco-villas can be bought from £749,950. Providing an exceptional lifestyle investment and the ideal holiday home for friends and family, it’s easy to see why just three of the villas remain available to buy.

Established in 2012, Fixer Property and Management is a company that handles all aspects of private and holiday home requirements.
Operating in Cornwall, Fixer Management stands unrivalled in the field of handling all aspects of private and holiday home requirements. This unique company excels as a buying agent, helping clients find the perfect seaside retreat or portfolio investment. It offers a truly bespoke and exclusive service, ensuring a seamless and simple purchasing and planning process. From interior works and safety legislation to day-to-day management, they provide comprehensive support to owners, making the purchasing and planning process seamless and simple to navigate.
For those looking to purchase a holiday home, engaging Fixer Management's buying services will ensure that your choice is ‘the right one’. They’ll liaise with the local estate agencies, often sourcing properties off market or before they hit the major websites and
undertake viewings, saving valuable travel time for clients who are often based out of county. Their extensive local knowledge and long-term expertise enable them to understand the suitability of properties for holiday letting.
The process begins by understanding the client's overall aim – whether it's purely a business investment or a holiday home for personal enjoyment. They’ll take into account family preferences and future plans for the property. Many clients are in search of their eventual forever home, while others are looking to build a portfolio of investments that could serve as a pension fund. The suitability of a property as a holiday let is another critical consideration. A successful holiday home must meet specific criteria, from layout and parking to maintenance and demand.
We received advice when buying and setting up our two properties in Falmouth, and this has proved invaluable. We have been delighted with the professional service provided from Katie. I would highly recommend Fixer Management to anyone buying and owning a holiday let. D Seaman – Client
The location of a holiday home is paramount. The phrase "location, location, location" is particularly true in the context of holiday home destinations. Buying in the wrong area can result in significant financial losses. Fixer Management's local knowledge enables them to assess the success rate of different areas in Cornwall. It's crucial to avoid residential areas or places oversaturated with holiday lets to maximise investment.
Fixer Management also helps clients determine the potential rates and return on investment. Being realistic and honest, they provide accurate estimates of market rates and achievable occupancy weeks. Choosing the right marketing agent is another vital step. With numerous booking platforms and holiday let agencies available, the standard of a property should align with the appropriate marketing platform to attract the right guests. Their extensive network and contacts in Cornwall allow them to introduce clients to the best agent for their needs.
Understanding whether a client is a hands-on or hands-off buyer is crucial in terms of management. Discussing this aspect helps Fixer Management determine the level of involvement a client will have in changeovers, linen and safety reports. Deciding whether to manage these aspects personally or contract a managing agent is essential. Buying the property is just the beginning; running it as a successful business requires hard work and dedication.
Renovations and interior needs are also a significant consideration. Being involved during the sales process allows Fixer Management to identify the standard required to compete in this market. With their team, they provide quotes for all building and interior works through their sister company Warren French Interiors. Understanding the real cost of an investment is critical. By considering all these points, they create a clear picture of the return on investment, forecasting an approximate three-year plan from setup to full functionality. This allows clients to financially plan in advance, make informed decisions, and understand the legislation and regulations of holiday letting.
Fixer Management is ideally suited to provide a comprehensive and tailored approach, making it the premier choice for anyone looking to invest in or manage a holiday home in Cornwall. Their dedication to understanding client needs and delivering a top-notch service sets them apart, ensuring that every aspect of holiday home ownership is handled with the utmost professionalism and care.
Redefining the holiday home ownership experience with unparalleled natural beauty, sea views and innovative eco-friendly initiatives.
Tregoad Holiday Park near Looe in Cornwall has recently unveiled two, brand new developments: Tredinnick Downs and Seaton Sands. Nestled amidst rolling hills in a beautiful woodland valley, Tredinnick Downs and Seaton Sands are the perfect locations for nature lovers. The developments have been carefully designed to provide a tranquil retreat, allowing owners to fully immerse themselves in the surroundings. The extensive, impressive planting of wildflower turf, bee poles and lawn creates a vibrant habitat for local wildlife, making every visit an enchanting encounter with nature.
One of the standout features of these developments is the remarkable scale of the landscaping efforts. It has been completed to an incredibly high standard with enough lawn turf laid to cover a FIFA-sized football field, alongside 4,000 square metres of wildflower turf. This wildflower area, nearly as large as Europe’s biggest living wall in Manchester, is not only visually stunning but also ecologically beneficial. Even the pegs used in the turf are made from bamboo which degrade over time, enriching the soil further with organic matter and improving its health and structure.
This eco-friendly approach also fosters the growth of diverse plant species, enhancing the area’s ecological richness. Adding to the ecological charm, Tregoad has introduced two bee poles and five natural bee hives, supporting around 50,000 bees. The efforts Tregoad have gone to to support nature not only boost pollination but also create habitats for local wildlife such as badgers, foxes, deer, buzzards and woodpeckers, allowing guests to feel fully at one with nature.
Tregoad Holiday Park’s new developments are more than just holiday homes; they are a testament to sustainable tourism and a celebration of nature’s wonders, reimagining the idyllic retreat. Whether seeking relaxation or an eco-friendly adventure, guests will find a sanctuary of peace and natural beauty at Tregoad with a plethora of luxury boltholes to call their own.

THE MAELSTROM An anchor in
Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life is a treasure trove of items
that bear witness to life and times gone by
Housing a wide-ranging collection through which we can share stories of life in Cornwall, Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life can be found in the town’s former market buildings. The collection on display ranges wildly in size, from the smallest item, a dice made from the tooth of a lion, to the largest – the historic building itself!
Led by Annette MacTavish, the museum’s Director, this wonderful museum is always looking for new ways to share what it has to offer and to make it as welcoming as possible to as many people as possible. When the museum first opened its doors in 1949 the newspaper headline read ‘Farmers will like it’. This summer, as Annette explains, “The museum is continuing with its project led by Dr Tehmina Goskar to better reflect Cornish farming from the 1970s to today. As the project moves into its second year, we will be undertaking preventive conservation in public so visitors can speak to us and find out more. This is all being made possible thanks to an award of £78,000 from the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund.”
While the museum displays objects relating to working life from farming via fishing to
on land and sea.
mining, the main focus remains on everyday items. Annette continues, “We specialise in the things people owned and loved. As you look around the museum, you will see objects that remind you of things people you know have used in their lifetime. The museum is home to things used and loved, not boxed up and kept for special occasions. It’s why we can see people in the things we share, and why the museum is so special.”
Over the summer, they are running free weekly making activities for families on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings to tie in with their summer exhibition ‘One and All’. This exhibition is the third and final instalment to Seamas Carey’s trilogy of work on Cornwall, nationalism and identity.
The museum is free to visit and open Monday to Saturday 10am-4pm.

PIER HOUSEPeerless
Cornwall is steeped in history, but it’s hard to find a place which transports you back to the past more than the iconic harbour of Charlestown.
The UNESCO World Heritage site is home to impressive wooden Tall Ships, with shops and eateries now nestled into the nooks of the outer harbour walls.
Up until last month, a big part of the iconic scenery has been undergoing a revamp, with the grand Pier House now having reopened in all its glory. Renovations to the pub, which dates back to 1794, have been underway since last November following a devastating fire. Like a phoenix from the ashes, the Pier House has undergone its multi-millionpound transformation and is now ready to show off its new look and charm to all.
The bar area has been opened-up to give a sweeping view over the iconic Georgian harbour. Meanwhile, the dining area has been adorned with quirky furnishings, from lobster pot lights to a boat hanging from the ceiling.
There are plenty of nods to the pub’s harbourside location. The bar has been finished with wooden ‘ribs’ which mimic the inside of the Tall Ships, which can be seen from most windows of the establishment. The interior of the pub is inspired by the coast and original features of the building
have also been sensitively exposed, including joists and beams in many of the bedrooms and communal spaces.
Each of the 23 new bedrooms is unique, including cosy cabin rooms and some with their own mezzanines and day beds for lounging and taking in the stunning sea views.
Thoughtful touches haven’t been missed out – rooms are kitted with their own Pier House branded surf robes for the nights people want to enjoy the beach outside and the room minibars come stocked with a free Korev for each guest.
Guests can dine in the open and airy restaurant area for lunch and dinner from a menu which champions the best south west produce.
The Pier House is the perfect home away from home to make the most of a stay in Charlestown. To book a room, visit www. pierhousehotel.com.

SIZZLESSummer
Welcoming summer with al-fresco dining ideas and barbecue inspiration.
Words by Jude Kereama
One of the things we look forward to the most in summer is the chance to be outside and dine. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting in the sun whilst on holiday having lunch or dinner with a glass of rosé or two. And of course, there is nothing better than the smell and taste of barbecuing to really get the taste buds flowing. I, for one, love to cook as much as I can on the barbecue whenever it’s not raining. Everything goes on the barbecue from meats to seafood and any vegetable. I also love the fact that us dads tend to want to do most of the cooking, which gives many mums a well-deserved break from the daily routine of feeding the family.
I really like the chance to experiment on a barbecue with different marinades, dressings and sauces. Inspiration can come from many countries; such as marinated beef with chimichurri sauce from Argentina; chicken satay with peanut sauce from South East Asia, and grilled pork souvlaki from Greece. Or maybe something closer to home, like a linecaught Cornish mackerel bap with pickles, beetroot, and tartare sauce, or even a simple grilled local lobster with garlic butter and fries. And, of course, you can’t go wrong with the good old favourites of burgers, sausages and marinated chicken. The combinations are endless.
Then the question is, which barbecue to buy? I have a selection of barbecues between the restaurants and home. With a multitude of variations in type and different fuels available, there are many choices to make. I personally love a mix of wood and charcoal. The charcoal gives fantastic heat while the wood adds flavour. I personally have a Green Egg at home which I really enjoy. These types of barbecues are called ‘kamado’ as they are made from insulated ceramic, designed to keep hot.
It takes a little bit of practice to cook well on one as you need to use the vents underneath, and on the lid, to control the heat. But once you’ve mastered the art, the benefit is that they stay very hot and you can barbecue for up to three hours on one light. I also think a gas barbecue has its place, as they are easier to light and give instant and controllable heat, which is much better for people who want to cook in a hurry. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best.
We have a Konro grill at Kota, which is effectively a small box that doesn’t take up much room that we use to grill ingredients. They’re particularly handy if you’re just barbecuing for two and don’t want to cook too much, as they use very little fuel to get nice and hot for grilling.
At Kota Kai, we have a Josper Grill that is a beast! It can reach temperatures of up to 400°C. We throw so many different ingredients on it and are constantly experimenting to see what it can do.
One of the focus areas at Kota Kai this summer is our al-fresco dining area on the green on Porthleven’s harbour head. It has the best views over the harbour and, with seating for up to 70 people, it’s already very popular. We will be serving a selection of barbecue dishes accompanied by jugs of cocktails, sangria and a lovely wine list, all designed for summer dining. I hope to be doing a few barbecue days directly on the green if the weather permits –keep an eye on our socials for more details and I hope to see you there!
It all started with the simple idea of making a sophisticated Gin that would stand out from the crowd.

Cornish Rock Gin
Asuper smooth classic gin was crafted, but the journey didn't end there. The creators aimed to develop a pink gin that was dry and devoid of artificial syrups. They combined their Classic gin with pink champagne sourced from the Hautvillers region in France, known for its Bacchanalian traditions. The result is a delicate, extremely dry gin with a subtle champagne aftertaste. From modest beginnings, they discovered they couldn't stop innovating. Today, the Rock Distillery offers eleven exceptional gins, catering to a wide range of tastes, however you choose to drink them.
Encouraged by their initial success, the team ventured into rum production, unleashing their creative potential to produce instant cocktails with their innovative rums. Rock Distillery's Coconut Paradise, when mixed with pineapple juice, offers a tropical escape. Their Mango and Passionfruit rum, combined
with lemonade or prosecco, creates an instant Porn Star Martini.
Another quick cocktail is their Divine Lime with salted caramel, mixed with lime soda for a simple margarita. The distillery now boasts 13 rum varieties, including the Banana Blast for banana enthusiasts, the zingy Rhubarb and Ginger, the 'sharp-to-marzipan' Perfect Plum and their best-seller, Dark Spiced Pineapple, which pairs excellently with ginger beer for a tropical dark and stormy beverage.
With their rums well established, Rock Distillery expanded into other Cornish spirits. Last year, they introduced Rock Cornish Apple Brandy, aged for three years in French red wine barrels. This brandy, made from Bramley apples, is distilled twice in 200L copper pot stills, then aged in a 225L oak barrel. Cut with Cornish spring water and left to rest before bottling it's smooth enough to be enjoyed neat.
Tropical Mango & Passionfruit
Cornish Rum
Simultaneously, they launched Cornish Rock Single Malt Whiskey. This is matured in French red wine barrels – but be prepared for so much more from a three-year-old! Rock single English malt undergoes a gentle stress-free fermentation and is distilled three times in a pot still, to ensure paramount smoothness and flavour. The key is the elevated temperature maturation. It is then cut with Cornish spring water to bring out that smooth malty taste. Just fabulous, however you choose to drink it, with or without a mixer.
The distillery's liqueurs began with Rock Lemongino, a blend of classic gin, fresh lemons, and a touch of sugar, cut to 22% ABV. This refreshing drink can be enjoyed over ice, with spring water, or with cloudy Lemonade. It is the best and most refreshing of summer drinks.
They also ventured into whiskey liqueurs, starting with Rock Peanut Whiskey, a liqueur made from their Single Malt Whiskey and peanuts, cut with Cornish springwater to 22% ABV. This was followed by Whiskey Warmer, a blend of Single Malt, ginger, and local honey, perfect as a soothing drink. Their final whiskey liqueur, Whiskey Sour, combines Single Malt with fresh lemons and pink grapefruit, ideal for sipping over ice.
All these products are available online at www.rockgincornish.com or in their shops in Bude, Tintagel, Wadebridge and Padstow. New products are always in development and their first out-of-county shop will open in Corsham near Bath at the end of August.

Her work portrays not only the beauty of the wild but also that which surrounds us daily, including the animals and beings that share our everyday lives and are closest to our hearts.
Cornish-made and exquisitely hand-carved, each inlaid tile is made using ancient 13th century inlay techniques, hand carved (not painted) with beautiful images, all held eternal in earth and time.
The sea, the sea…
Being based in Cornwall has greatly influenced Padstow Gallery’s style, making Ian Rawnsley’s work particularly appropriate.
The pull of the sea is ever present in his life, never far from his mind, and is an ever-present element in his artwork.
Working predominantly in oil, he aims to capture the energy and drama of the coast and open sea. Like many artists before him, the western shore – whether in Cornwall, the “Big Skies” of the Hebridean
in pieces that are not only beautiful but ethical too. This wonderful new collection is a perfect reminder of those lazy days combing the beach looking for shoreline treasures.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
Clair and Paul have been making and selling jewellery in Porthleven for over 15 years.
They began their journey at the Harbour market in 2009, crafting playful beaded jewellery. In 2012, the small shop next to the lime kiln, previously a surf-shack called Waterbourne, became available. Clair and Paul seized the opportunity and opened their very own jewellery workshop in the May.
As their commissioned work and in-house repairs increased, they found it challenging to keep up with the workload due to limited space for a second workbench. This prompted them to start looking around for a more spacious shop and workshop. They had always admired the former Bijoux Box as a potential new location, just two doors down from the Harbour Inn, so were thrilled to acquire its lease in 2015. The additional space allowed them to expand their operation giving them the opportunity to hire another gold/ silversmith to handle the growing demand.
Their team now includes a few very talented individuals who bring a fresh twist to the shop. To ensure they have enough of their own designs on display, they all dedicate one day a week to creating new stock.
Their son, David, has been working with them for over four years and manages most
of the commissioned pieces now, while the front-of-house staff have extensive industry experience or are makers themselves. Clair specialises in beaded jewellery with semiprecious stones and pearls. And, during the summer months, their daughter Sarah helps out on busy days, making it a true family business!
They work with trusted suppliers and customer satisfaction is their top priority, as reflected in their online reviews. Whether it's simple silver charms or high-end diamond jewellery, the Jewellery Workshop is the right choice for every occasion.
They also specialise in melting down customers’ old gold to create new pieces that retain sentimental value while reflecting their owners’ design preferences.
For commissioned work inquiries, you can simply pop in – no appointment required.

Unwrapping
A GEOMETRIC WORLD
Philip Howson’s art is attracting a growing interest around the world, from collectors and investors alike. We delve a little deeper to see why.
Philip Howson, one of Europe's new leading exponents of Geometric Abstraction, is holding an exhibition of his most recent art within a beautiful pop-up gallery in the very centre of Truro, opposite Manning's Hotel, in Lemon Street. It commences on 11th August and will run for one month. It will feature a curated selection of his latest original artworks, as well as a fantastic selection of limited edition prints of his art. For the uninitiated Geometric Abstraction is a style of abstract art that utilises geometric shapes, often arranged in non-illusionistic spaces to create nonrepresentational compositions. While avantgarde artists in the early twentieth century popularised this genre, similar motifs have appeared in art since ancient times.
Although Philip doesn't like to pigeon hole his art or copy styles, it’s fair to say his work is influenced by Abstract Modernism, Bauhaus and Concrete art; resulting in his own unique interpretation of Modernist Geometric Abstraction.
He says, "Maths is the basis of life. In geometry, it becomes both visual and tangible and has always been intrinsic within our lives as humans. Geometry is everywhere, millions
of man-made objects are an amalgam of geometric shapes. We mostly see the sum of the parts; we do not see or explore the shapes that make them! My art unwraps the geometry and shapes it into my everchanging expression of random form."
Philip goes on to describe his art as having "no meaning beyond itself." It is a pure exploration of geometric form, designed to provoke thought and bring much visual pleasure!
His art is never achieved using digital imagery, manipulation or masking tape, making it all the more remarkable for its crisp hard-edged lines and clever use of vibrant colour.
Preferring to use acrylic and vinyl on canvas and board, his colourful and sophisticated geometric forms manage huge diversity. The results are visually stunning, never failing to attract attention, often playing tricks with the senses. As a consequence, when displayed, they are always a point of much discussion!

An angelic
REVELATION
Mike Lacey, owner of Waves Surf Art Gallery, reveals more about the evolving significance of his iconic Cornish Heart photograph.
There is something unique about this photograph; capturing a heart shape in a wave is rare, but the timing of its capture is significant. In this instance, the photographer Mike Lacey, was in search of a wave image to commemorate the day his daughter was born, a challenging task as it could have been any time before or after the due date. The heart-shaped wave was captured on December 3, 2014, during sunrise, and his daughter, Coral, was born the very next day, ten days before her due date. This photograph was taken during the last session in the water before her arrival.
Years later, Mike revisited the photograph, still in awe of its significance to him and his family, and noticed the file number was DSC-9999. Research into the meaning of the number 9999 revealed it symbolises the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new phase filled with love, wisdom, compassion and positive change. Biblically, angel number 9999, like number 999, conveys messages of love, compassion, inner strength – fostering peace, harmony and empathy. It indicates constant support from higher places and spiritual growth despite challenges.
In January 2024, inspired by a documentary on Leonardo da Vinci that discussed hidden elements in his paintings imparted through mirror and overlay techniques, Mike applied
the same method to the heart photograph. Mike takes up the story, “Astonishingly, it revealed a perfect angel at the centre, glowing as it emerged and two doves flying away towards the end of the wave, symbolising divine presence, peace, hope and love. This connection to the original heart image was striking.”
Many people speak of a point in their lives where they feel guided and trust this divine guidance or sixth sense. This photograph has led the photographer to believe in a higher power or divine guidance, connecting everyone through intuition. Even after nine years, the photograph continues to reveal surprises, prompting Mike to share these findings with the world. He hopes it brings happiness, hope and comfort to others.

Two well established artists, Rachael Mia Allen and Richard Horner RSMA, invite you to an exhibition at the Lifeboat House, Porthleven.
Rachael’s passion for the Cornish landscape, surrounding her home in West Penwith and the north coast near her studio at Ding Dong, is evident in the beautiful paintings she creates. It provides a constant source of inspiration for her.
Rich in natural light, texture, mood and colour, there is an expressionistic energy and spontaneity to Rachael’s gestural markmaking, which brings a sense of drama and authenticity to her work. Subtlety and sensitivity are also present, a signature of Rachael’s style and personality.
Richard’s emergence into the world of fine art is a relatively recent one. When he was younger, he won a few prizes but he let his pursuit slip to one side whilst chasing other varied goals. However, after moving to Cornwall in 2014, and with time on his hands, he revisited his earlier passion again and started to work at it with some vigour.
At this time, his inspiration came from some of the painters in the Royal Society of Marine Artists. So much so that he began working towards gaining acceptance to this august association. The culmination of which matured in 2020 when he was granted full membership.
A self-professed realist he says that “I just don’t do ‘expressive’ or ‘conceptual’ art.”
A fascination with all things coastal defines all of his subject matter. It’s taken a while to move on from boats, harbours and specific locations, towards the atmospherics of sea and sky that could be more or less anywhere.
This year he’s worked on a series of smaller paintings focussing just on waves – attempting to catch both the atmosphere and movement of particular scenes. Richard’s love and deep appreciation of his subject is clearly evident in all of his paintings.
The joint exhibition will be held at the Lifeboat Gallery in Porthleven, running from the 10th until the 17th of August. Opening times are 10.30am – 4.30pm. They look forward to welcoming you there.

The region, known for its stunning beaches and breath-taking natural landscapes, can paradoxically also feel isolating and lonely, leading to declining mental health among some parents. Here is where Home-Start Kernow steps in, providing vital support to empower these parents, helping them grow in confidence, build support networks and foster meaningful connections.
Home-Start Kernow offers personalised support directly in the family's home. Specially trained volunteers visit weekly, providing tailored assistance to each family. By providing the right support at the earliest possible opportunity, HomeStart Kernow ensures that youngsters across Cornwall thrive and have better futures.
What’s fantastic is that the support offered is always free, ensuring it is accessible to all families regardless of their circumstances.
This accessibility is crucial for the many parents who may otherwise be unable to find or afford such valuable assistance.
However, Home-Start Kernow's ability to provide these essential services depends on the generosity of the community. They urge individuals to support their mission through donations. A one-off or regular contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of families who need it most.
A donation of £5 can provide a healthy snack at one of their family groups. £10 can support an isolated parent to attend a group, fostering vital connections and improving their mental health. £15 can cover the expenses for a volunteer to visit a vulnerable family.
Home-Start Kernow reminds us that childhood cannot wait. To help them in their mission scan their QR code to donate directly, or get in touch to learn more about their impactful work across Cornwall. FOR WILDLIFE
Cornwall Wildlife Trust – safeguarding its wildlife and wild places for generations to come.
It’s a beautiful time of year in Cornwall and one where many visitors come to explore the picturesque countryside views, hidden coves and over 400 miles of stunning coastline. Cornwall Wildlife Trust is keen to encourage people to enjoy the amazing wildlife in Cornwall whilst also helping to protect it.
As one of the best places in Britain for wildlife watching, you can expect to see a rich variety of marine life, including sharks, seabirds and globally rare grey seals that frequent our shores. On land, we have an exceptional array of wild creatures, many of which can be spotted at one of Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s 59 nature reserves. From beautiful butterflies to rare, colourful birds and beavers that are back after centuries – there’s plenty to see!
No matter where you’re staying, whether on the coast or inland, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy Cornwall’s amazing wildlife, and Cornwall Wildlife Trust has some great advice to help make sure our enjoyment doesn’t take precedence over the safety and wellbeing of the animals that you encounter.
First and foremost, it is important to avoid disturbing any wildlife by following the Cornwall Marine and Coastal Code. Many wildlife species are under increasing pressure from human activity and therefore need our
help and respect. Remember to give wildlife space and time, observe from a distance and avoid actions that may scare, startle or panic them and to leave only footprints when exploring.
If you want to take it a step further and actively help protect the wildlife of Cornwall, then here are a few more suggestions for you. Cornwall Wildlife Trust hosts the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS) – the central resource for wildlife and habitat information for the county. They are encouraging anyone to submit their wildlife sightings as this will help them improve understanding of the natural history of Cornwall, as well as to be used in decision-making, education, research and other public benefit purposes. Some other great ideas include supporting local Cornish businesses whilst you are visiting, eating sustainable seafood and getting involved in a beach clean.
