Welcome
From the Editor
to the latest edition of Cornwall Living!
Everyone loves a spot of retail therapy, myself included. There’s nothing better than whiling away a few hours wandering through one of Cornwall’s vibrant high streets, finding hidden treasures at every turn. This issue, I’ve had a wonderful time selecting some of my favourite retailers from across the Duchy (from page 19 ). All are independent businesses whose passion for their product is evident in the quality of their merchandise. Whether it’s a designer, maker or curator, it’s great to know that when you find that something special to purchase, that you’re also supporting a local business.
This issue we are also looking ahead to the 2024 Cornwall Home Improvement and Self Build Show. Taking place over the weekend of the 5th and 6th October at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre, this informative event brings together interior, garden, renewables and self-build expertise. With over 100 exhibitors coming together under one roof, if you’re looking to undertake a home renovation, extension or self-build project this is the place to be. From page 28 , we take a look at some of the exhibitors who will be attending.
As we welcome the start of the oyster season, Jude Kereama (from page 52 ) pays homage to this venerable and sustainably harvested shellfish that will soon be gracing the plates of discerning diners at his Kota and Kota Kai restaurants. Staying with the foodie theme, we also visit one of St Austell Brewery’s managed pubs, The Old Success Inn on page 58 . Located between Land’s End and Cape Cornwall, not only can you expect some fine Cornish victuals you can also extend your stay in one of its cosy bedrooms, lulled to sleep by the sound of the ocean.
It’s been a very exciting week here at Engine House Media’s headquarters. To start with we are delighted to announce the much-anticipated shortlist for the Cornwall Living Awards 2024 ! Be sure to turn to page 26 to find out how you can vote for your favourite Cornish businesses ahead of the award ceremony in October. And... drum roll please... the winner of our 150th anniversary has been chosen! Emma from Cornwall will be in receipt of over £16,000 worth of incredible prizes – congratulations from the team! Look out for our interview with Emma in the next issue of Cornwall Living In the meantime...
...happy reading!

WOW CORNWALL’S RANGE OF CONSIDERED FURNITURE AND HOMEWARES

As is the Cornish way, WOW Cornwall is wildly passionate about celebrating every season with fresh, breezy picks that deliver a breathtakingly unique and functional aesthetic, evocative of the ever-evolving hues, patterns and textures found in our magical sea-to-sky surroundings. With an abundant in-store and online offering embracing Scandi-style with the nature-stirred use of raw materials and organic tones evocative of coastal design, WOW’s crafted furniture additions, throws and cushions, and maker-inspired accessories, inspire a serene slow-living environment rooted in mood and space-enhancing simplicity.
Autumn showers moisten the warm summer soil and provide perfect conditions for new roots to establish before winter dormancy and a spring awakening next year.
It is the optimum time to plant trees –including big specimens – shrubs, perennials and hedging – as well as popular spring flowering bulbs like daffodils and tulips, which will erupt next spring, creating magnificent displays. Grasses steal the limelight in autumn too, with their striking plumes of foliage and wonderful texture and movement.
But a feast for the senses doesn’t stop with the plants at Trevena Cross. Incredible sights, smells and flavours can be savoured inside the on-site Palm Tree Bistro – a place that strongly believes in the power of fresh, local ingredients, as many as possible sourced from within the county. The bistro aims to offer a dining experience that reflects the richness of Cornwall’s culinary treasures, offering
traditional favourites alongside something a bit different. The dishes at the bistro are made even more special by the presence of ingredients sourced from the nursery at Trevena Cross, ensuring a unique and sustainable connection to the land. Autumn time offers up beans, squash and apples amongst a myriad of other fruit and vegetables ready to harvest and inspire creativity in the kitchen, both on the main menu and the specials board.
Autumn also signals the launch of a sensational Sunday Roast at the bistro, which is set to wow visitors. Look out for news of the Sunday menu – it will be one not to miss.

New sea foam jewellery from Justin Duance
Justin’s latest new designs draw inspiration from sea foam and the complex patterns they form on our coastline. Starting with his photographs of Cornish sea foam, each unique image is then laser engraved out of solid silver, in the workshop, and transformed into earrings, pendants and rings – and even a piece that can be worn in a variety of different ways.
As an experimental collection, these items can be found on the ‘Off the Bench Peg’ section of their website – where they will continue to grow and evolve until potentially becoming a new collection of their own, which is vastly different and yet complimentary to the sandcast jewellery which they are so well known for.
You can visit the workshop by appointment to see them in person.
For more information visit www.justind.co.uk or call 01736 367254.
Canine cool
On warm days our canine companions face the same challenges with heat that we do. Dogs are particularly susceptible to heat due to their thick fur coats and limited ability to sweat. Ensuring your dog stays cool and comfortable is crucial for their health and happiness during the hot months. Slickers Doghouse offers a variety of innovative products designed to help your canine companion beat the heat. Take their cooling mats for example, which are available in various sizes dependent on breed. They are one of the simplest and most effective ways to regulate your dog’s temperature, absorbing and dissipating heat from their body. Cooling coats work in a similar way. Simply soak them in water, wring out and pop on your pup; due to their added UV protection they also have the benefit of protecting your dog from harmful rays. Talking of sun protection, Slickers also stocks dog sunscreen, ideal for
areas like the nose, ears and belly, which are more prone to sunburn.
Hydration is super important on hot days. Slickers recommends your dog always has access to fresh water and with their handy range of leak-free portable water bottles and spill-free bowls, you needn’t be weighed down on your walkies. While walking on very hot days is not recommended – pavements and tarmac paths can reach very high temperatures in the sun – a pair of cooling boots could be just what you need to protect your dog’s paws from hot and rough terrain. Visit Slickers Doghouse to explore these fantastic options and to ensure that your dog is the coolest pooch in town!

Planning permission
REQUIRED?
Bell Cornwell can offer some practical advice for those seeking to utilise their land assets for holiday glamping projects.
Establishing a glamping venture, from a single shepherd's hut to a multiunit site, requires careful navigation of planning regulations. This guide clarifies the key points to consider when seeking planning permission for your project.
Generally, planning permission will be necessary if you intend to operate for more than 60 days annually or if your proposal involves significant built development. This applies even to a single permanent unit in a residential garden.
Shepherd's huts, camping pods, and certain log cabins often fall under the legal definition of a caravan, which can simplify matters. For a single unit in a residential garden used as additional living space, planning permission may not be required. However, obtaining a Lawful Development Certificate is advisable to confirm its lawful status.
When planning larger projects on agricultural land, several vital factors require careful consideration. The location plays a crucial role in assessing landscape sensitivity, special designations such as National Landscapes, and overall site accessibility. Equally important are decisions about accommodation and facilities, including the type and number of units and essential amenities like toilets, showers, and kitchens. Finally, access and parking arrangements demand attention, focusing on ensuring safe entry and exit points, good visibility, and sufficient parking
facilities. These elements combined, form the foundation for creating a well-designed, functional development that harmonises with its surroundings.
If you need planning permission, it's worth noting that planning policies can vary between local authorities. Some areas may be more supportive of new tourist accommodation than others. The policy context in Cornwall is very supportive of tourism proposals in the right location, subject to understanding the bespoke nuances of an individual site.
Bell Cornwell understands that navigating Cornwall's planning system can be challenging. Their team of expert planning consultants has extensive experience in the region, offering tailored advice to landowners developing camping and glamping projects. Well-versed in local and national planning policies, they guide clients through the complexities of the application process, ensuring proposals are robust, compliant and aligned with Cornwall Council's requirements. Their track record of successful glamping and tourism project applications in Cornwall demonstrates their ability to develop solid proposals with a high chance of approval. Let Bell Cornwell's expertise transform your glamping vision into reality.

An epithet that can be applied to both Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories as well as what they provide.
Established in 1985, they’re a familyrun business based in Cornwall, specialising in bespoke conservatories, orangeries, doors and windows. They offer a variety of materials including timber, uPVC and aluminium to match different architectural styles, focusing on energy efficiency, durability and low maintenance.
“When it comes to projects, we handle everything, which sets us apart. We aren’t afraid of finding solutions to complex designs. We often take on projects others refuse. We took on a conservatory project in Falmouth on the roof of a four-story apartment block with a sheer drop to the sea on two sides.” explains Sales Director Katy Green.
The design and construction process at Philip Whear begins with an initial consultation to align the client's vision with their budget. Their skilled craftsmen use highquality materials to fabricate and assemble each project meticulously, ensuring a flawless finish. Open communication with clients during construction and installation fosters transparency and customer satisfaction, contributing to a high rate of repeat business and recommendations as this satisfied customer testifies, “We initially approached Philip Whear on recommendations from friends. Their experience and attention to detail are evident in every door, window and fascia. They stacked salvageable items for recycling and removed all other materials.

rom the very beginning back in 2004, Oltco has been a Cornwall-based family business. Initially selling and installing non-slip solutions for commercial and domestic properties, a need for innovation and development began a journey that sees the company at the forefront of resin-based path and driveway solutions today.

Fast-forward fifteen years and with the addition of director John Pierce in 2011, Oltco is the UK’s leading supplier and installer of sustainable resin solutions. With over fifty franchises, Oltco operates nationwide, but the HQ still resides in the hometown of Newquay.

The Grey Lurcher, Falmouth's bespoke homeware and lifestyle store, has taken an exciting leap forward by opening a second, smaller version of itself in the heart of Truro. This new addition, located at 8 Pydar Mews, is a testament to the store's growing popularity and the team's commitment to bringing their unique selection of products to a broader audience.

OUR OYSTER The world is
As we look forward to the start of the oyster season in September, I take a look at its venerable history and how it has influenced my Cornish restaurants.
Words by Jude Kereama
Kota means Oyster in Mãori. In fact, a kota is a very large oyster in New Zealand. Being brought up Mãori in New Zealand meant there was always shellfish as part of our diet and culture. When I was opening my first restaurant in Porthleven, I wanted to pick a name that was Mãori, easy to pronounce and something that I loved and would use in the kitchen. I trawled the Mãori dictionary to find a possible name for the restaurant and out popped the word kota. It was a perfect match. You always find oysters on our menu and they have come in different forms over the years. We have served them fresh with a variety of dressings and cooked either in a tempura batter; wrapped in potato strands and deep fried till crisp; poached, pickled and even barbecued. I absolutely love oysters all year round.
Oysters have been eaten along the coast for hundreds of years. In Roman times, the native oyster was fished in the UK waters and exported to Italy. They say Julius Caesar was so mad for the oysters that he would send for them and pay for their weight in gold. In the 19th century, oysters were very cheap and plentiful and were popular with all the different classes of people. The poor saw them as a cheap source of protein and would introduce them to beef pies and stews to fill out the dish. They were eaten at all times of the day every day until they were overfished, which led to a huge decline in numbers. Subsequently, oyster prices increased due to scarcity and it is now seen as a luxury ingredient.
In September, the native oyster season starts on the first of the month and lasts until the end of April. The native oyster (Ostrea edulis) is a flatter rounder oyster than the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). I always find the native oysters have a better crunchy texture, and a more ‘zincy’ flavour in the colder months, making them a true delicacy. We even have oyster festivals in Cornwall held in honour of Falmlouth’s mighty native oyster.
Native oysters have been harvested from the Fal Estuary and Helford River for over 200 years and is the last viable native oyster fishery in the United Kingdom. The sustainability of this fishery has been managed well; only lightweight dredges are allowed to harvest the oysters, towed by traditional sailing or rowing boats, ensuring that stocks remain healthy for the future.
Pacific oysters are a non-native species as the name suggests and originally came from Japan. They are much more commonly found around the shores of Cornwall and have really flourished here. This makes them super sustainable and a great healthy source of protein. We must try our best to eat more. We have been known to take oysters for the restaurants from the Helford River, the Fal River, Fowey and Porthilly, which goes to prove how well spread they are, and the great thing about them is that they are available all year round. There are said to be Pacific oysters in the Fal Estuary which are so gigantic that they are certainly too big to shuck and eat fresh. I’ve been thinking about ways of using these giants and one idea is to start making our own oyster sauce! I love the fact that oysters have been entwined into the culture of Cornwall through necessity and tradition. They deserve to be celebrated as an essential taste of coming to Cornwall on holiday. If you haven’t eaten them before, come try them at one of the Kotas where I am sure we’ll have a flavour or style for you.

With summer in full swing Rock Distillery is bustling, ensuring their shelves remain stocked while developing new and intriguing beverages.
Recently, they've faced a shortage of their True Taste 57% ABV white rum, an exceptional drink that takes time to perfect. Happily, it's back on the shelves, with ample reserves to meet demand. This particular rum, cut to 57% ABV with Cornish Spring water, was crafted by Angie in honour of her father, a Royal Marine who enjoyed his daily rum tot from the Royal Navy. It is pure and sharp, perfect for drinking neat or as the base for a refreshing fruit rum punch.
Rock Distillery's latest creations venture into the realm of vodka. Their Classic Vodka, at 40% ABV and cut with Cornish Spring water, boasts a smooth, clean taste with a long finish. Best enjoyed straight from the freezer, it also shines in traditional cocktails like a Bloody Mary. For the perfect mix, blend a large measure of Classic Vodka with fresh tomato juice, a dash of Tabasco, a grind of black pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice. Stir with a fresh celery stick.
Their development team is also working on more innovative vodka liqueur flavours.
Their collection of spirits spans a variety of gins, rums, whiskies and liqueurs, while honouring the rich heritage of its coastal surroundings. Ocean-inspired
Artist Sophie Palmer finds inspiration for her work along the Cornish coast, which she calls home. She can often be found walking the miles of Cornwall’s shorelines, gathering ideas for her next installation. The stunning range includes home décor, kitchen and lifestyle accessories as well as handmade jewellery.
This large scale piece (pictured), which is available to purchase online, forms a dramatic part of Sophie’s ‘midnight coast’ collection. Crafted from non-toxic resin, deep pigments, sculpting pastes and woods, it captures the sea’s immense power and the rapid, dramatic shifts of its midnight tides, as the waves crash against the towering rocks. A true talking piece of admiration, it measures 183cm

Take the ocean home
Mike Lacey, owner and founder of the renowned Waves Gallery, has been capturing the essence of the ocean for over a decade. Working from his base in the fishing village of Porthleven, some of his favourite spots to snap the ocean include Praa Sands, Kynance Cove, Porthcurno, and of course, the reefs and clifftops around his home village.
The gallery itself stocks striking splashbacks so you can bring a touch of Cornwall’s marine world to your home. The finished
results of Mike’s work are waterproof, UV protected and easy to clean, making them perfect for your kitchen or bathroom. What’s more, you’re not restricted to standard sizes or proportions! Instead, give Mike and the team the measurements you require, and they’ll create a bespoke backdrop, made to measure for you and your space.

He has been painting this coastline for over 20 years and after a successful solo exhibition earlier this year, he is now focusing on a smaller series of paintings, now on display at Cornish Art in Porthleven and Perranuthnoe. Bringing the
PAST TO LIFE
With an eye on both the past and future Kathleen Ashcroft fashions pieces that are as unique as her vision.
You can find Kathleen at work in her small workshop located within the historic Market House, St Austell. Here she creates and sells her own brand of jewellery that is inspired by architectural edifices such as Smeaton’s Tower in Plymouth and Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland. The process of exploration is important, and her work is grounded in the research connected to a particular theme. It could be a building that no longer has a function, has been abandoned or is in ruins. It will feature in her work in the hope that it continues to exist in the here and now, brought back to life in jewellery to be worn upon the body. Each piece is designed, and hand crafted in small batches, using a combination of traditional jewellery making techniques alongside more modern tools such as computer aided design.
As a maker Kathleen is conscious of the impact creating can have on the environment and constantly looks at various ways of making her practice as
sustainable as possible. All her designs are created from recycled precious metal, which she obtains from a reputable supplier, this ensures that the customer can make the best considered sustainable choices when it comes to choosing hand made goods. Kathleen also makes in small batches, holds very little stock and makes up her designs mainly on request.
She also holds jewellery courses within her Market House studio, where you too can learn how to create your own precious items. The classes are small and limited to two students, which provides a more or less one-to-one learning environment.
For more details on the courses and to see her collections just pay a visit to her website or email her today.

Atishoo Gallery and picture framers celebrates 21 years in Charlestown this year.
Artist Liz Hackney founded what was originally called Atishoo Designs in 1997 when she opened her first art studio in St. Agnes on the north coast. Since then, Atishoo has grown into the established gallery, gift shop and bespoke picture framers that we see today in Charlestown; selling art, crafts and homewares by almost 50 artists and designers. Liz and her partner Paul Clark are both established artists and many of the original paintings and prints in the shop are their own creations.
Liz has her easel set up in the shop and can often be seen creating her latest painting while also serving at the counter and unpacking deliveries. Working on paper or canvas she uses collaged tissue paper to create interesting textures on the surface and paints with acrylic inks and watercolour, creating vibrant paintings of Cornish seascapes and harbours. This is where the gallery gets its quirky name from, a play on the words "Art" and "Tissue", which when said quickly sounds like "Atishoo"
Paul can mainly be found in the picture framing workshop creating frames for some of Cornwall's leading artists as well as the general public. With 30 plus years as a picture framer he has seen many interesting items, including this year a giant stuffed crab which certainly tested his framing skills!
When he's not framing Paul paints quirky scenes of the local harbours and villages with fluffy clouds and starry moonlit skies. His most recent painting is of the beautiful Thames Sailing Barge, "The Lady Daphne" which is currently moored in Charlestown Harbour. Over the summer Liz has been involved in the Floating Fayre, a pop-up art and craft fayre on board the barge, where she sells cards and prints of their artwork with a percentage of sales being donated towards the restoration and maintenance of the 101-year-old vessel. Several other artists and craftspeople also regularly exhibit on board with everything from handmade soaps, beach glass jewellery and pottery. Check out Atishoo Gallery and The Lady Daphne’s social media pages for updates.
Atishoo gallery can be found just up the hill from the harbour, in a courtyard opposite Charlestown Chapel.

INSIGHTSSome non-taxing
ABOVE
The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has announced 30th October 2024 as the date of the new Labour government’s first Budget.
Words by Stephen Maggs
This is the date when we expect many tax changes to be announced and implemented. So, what changes are we expecting under the new Labour government? What should be considered now before the expected changes are implemented?
As an advisory led firm, we have been having many conversations with clients since before the election about the impact of a new Labour government. Now, post-election, those have become more numerous and focused. Whilst much of this is, of course, speculative and cannot be guaranteed, it gives you an idea of what we are thinking and expecting.
Income Tax & National Insurance Contributions (NICs)
The Labour manifesto committed to not raising income tax and NICs on “working people.” This hints at a possible increase in employers’ NIC and potentially NICs being chargeable on other forms of income, such as investment income. Coupled with this is the possibility that the State Pension age cap on NICs ceases.
We also wouldn’t be surprised to see income tax rates on dividends increasing.
Capital Gains Tax (CGT)
We strongly expect CGT rates to be raised to match income tax rates, together with a likely return of the indexation allowance (abolished in 2008 for individuals), which allowed for a deduction/relief for inflationary increases for the period the asset had been owned. Overall, the majority of those paying capital gains tax will pay significantly more.
Business Asset Disposal Relief (providing a 10% capital gains tax rate on qualifying gains) might be retained, but the lifetime limit could be lowered again from the current £1 million per person. Those considering selling assets and realising gains in the near term should look at implementing disposals before 30 October 2024 to ensure they benefit from the current regime.
Additionally, we expect the capital gains base cost uplift on inherited assets to be removed where the asset has received relief or exemption on the deceased’s death. Those considering disposing of such inherited assets
Stephen Maggs, Tax Partner at RRL
should seek advice. These changes would likely take place from Budget Day.
Corporation Tax
The Labour manifesto committed to keeping the main rate of corporation tax at 25% for this parliament.
We hope for more considered thinking around Research & Development relief, as the current system is broken. However, it is complex, and changes may not be feasible by 6 April 2025.
Inheritance Tax (IHT)
Significant changes to IHT are expected. Although Labour has not formally indicated anything, it is very likely that they will significantly curtail or abolish the valuable Business Property Relief (BPR), possibly significantly capping it. If retained in some form (i.e., if capped), we strongly expect the assets able to qualify for the relief to be curtailed (e.g. AIM listed shares losing qualifying status).
We think Agricultural Property Relief (APR) might be removed for landlords and retained only for those owning and farming the land themselves.
These changes would be huge, and the loss of BPR would be catastrophic for some. Clients relying on the current benefits of BPR and APR should consider their positions asap.
Additionally, the “residence nil-rate band” may be abolished, reducing the available nil-rate band to the standard £325,000 per individual (£650,000 per married couple in most scenarios). These changes would likely take effect from 6 April 2025.
VAT
Labour’s manifesto committed to not raising VAT rates. However, private education fees are being subjected to standard-rated VAT, from 1 January 2025. Families impacted should consider whether income tax planning, using gifts from grandparents (potentially as part of their inheritance tax planning), could mitigate the overall tax cost.
Pensions
After some toing and froing, Rachel Reeves confirmed that a Labour government would not reverse the abolition of the lifetime allowance announced by the previous Conservative government.
However, we expect the inheritance tax exemption for most pension funds to be removed, making pension funds chargeable to inheritance tax. This will significantly increase inheritance tax exposure for many. Additionally, the 25% tax-free lump sum might be curtailed or abolished, with changes likely from Budget Day.
Furnished Holiday Lets
It’s been confirmed that the abolition of the FHL regime will take place on 6 April 2025. Those affected should consider their positions and seek advice.

For more information visit www. diveprojectcornwall.co.uk
WVisitor centres, run by SUEZ on behalf of Cornwall Council, are providing valuable education to the local community on waste, recycling and the environment.
orking in partnership with Cornwall Council and local non-governmental organisations SUEZ brings an innovative solution to the management of Cornwall’s waste and recycling. With a company ethos that puts the education of young people around waste, sustainability and marine conservation at the fore, SUEZ supports local communities to do the same; whether that’s providing litter pickers, presenting at local association meetings, visiting schools to deliver assemblies or helping local businesses on their own sustainability journey.
A primary concern for SUEZ, is to foster an interest in the environment and promote green skills, encouraging children to join industries such as their own and play their part in working towards a world where there is no more waste. Testament to this are their visitor centres which offer free educational visits, alongside some financial assistance to schools towards the cost of travelling to them.
Cornwall’s Energy Recover Centre in St Dennis offers active sessions which engage pupils of all abilities as they investigate sustainability, energy and resource
management topics, including a behind the scenes tour that enables pupils to witness parts of the facility in action. Pupils are invited to take part in an exciting team challenge which links to key stage three and GCSE elements of contemporary geographic knowledge, with an introduction to the four Rs – reduce, resuse, recycle and recover aimed at key stage two pupils.
At the Bodmin Visitor Centre, adjacent to the materials recycling facility, children can take part in arts and crafts using recycled materials, watch educational videos and play recycling games as well as being able to see the materials recycling facility in action, from the safe vantage point of the viewing platform. With both sites able to accommodate school groups of up to 30 pupils at a time, these centres are an invaluable source of education and inspiration to the children and communities of Cornwall.
