to the May issue of Cornwall Living

his has to be one of my favourite times of year in Cornwall. The hedgerows are full of golden yellow primroses heralding the start of summer while our woodlands are heady with the scent from carpets of azure bluebells. It’s these sensations and colours that have inspired many of Cornwall’s painters and makers over the years and so it’s fitting that May sees many of the county’s artists open the doors of their creative spaces to the public during Open Studios Cornwall 2018 – turn to page 22 to find out more. Continuing with the creative theme this month, Felix meets Matt ames, The City ardener’. A landscape designer, author and T presenter Matt has escaped city life for a home in the country (page 66). As the days get longer and the weather warms, now is the time when Cornwall gears up for some fabulous shows and events, and perhaps none more popular than the Royal Cornwall Show. We look forward to what promises to be the biggest and best show yet in our special supplement from page 95. Our Kids Love Cornwall Living section is back this month, from page 113, with ideas for keeping the whole family entertained at Trebah. Add to all that a selection of exquisite properties for sale, interiors inspiration, special places to stay and delicious places to eat and you have the ultimate guide to all that Cornwall has to offer. Until next time… enjoy!

Join in celebrating Cornwall Hospice Care’s Make a Will Week

Cornwall Hospice Care recently launched a new community initiative thanks to money left to the Cornish charity in Wills. The first two Neighbourhood Hubs opened in Penzance and Wadebridge this year; plans are afoot to open six more across the county!

Mel Chambers

brings an ancient craft into the modern day According to Mel, the art of inlay tiles (or encaustic, as it’s technically known) dates back to pre-13th Century and has been used to decorate everything, from the most elaborate palaces to the simplest of pots, for generations, across the globe. This unique craft has been brought well into the 21st Century by local Cornish artist Mel Chambers of Alchemy Tiles. Meticulously handcarving each inspiring image, quote or piece of poetry is just the beginning of this extensive process, Mel tells us. “After this, they are inlaid with coloured clay, scraped back, glazed and then slowly raw fired, making each piece completely bespoke and original.”

The hubs are designed to take the charity’s expertise out of the hospices and into the communities, helping people living with terminal illnesses, as well as their families and carers. One of those supported is Rex, who tells us: “The Hub team have helped

Get the blood pumping this spring at Kernow Adventure Park!

make my life so much better. It’s good to know them by name and to have that personal contact.” The Hubs prove the value of legacies to the charity and feature as part of Cornwall Hospice Care’s Make a Will Week. Between 14th and 18th May, local solicitors are offering their Will writing services in exchange for donations to the charity. To find out more visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Now the temperatures are finally starting to rise, some of you will be looking for ways to get out on the water. Unfortunately though, thanks to the recent weather, the sea is still pretty cold! Kernow Adventure Park is the perfect place for a spot of action on the water. Located in a beautiful reclaimed quarry near Falmouth and founded in 2013 as a stand-alone wake boarding park, Kernow Adventure Park now offers an impressive, fully-fledged inflatable Aqua Park. The team has also invested in stand-up paddle boards! Discussing the upcoming season, founder Alex tells us: “Being accessible to everyone and allowing them the opportunity to practice safe watersports and gain the benefits of exercising outdoors is all part of our ‘Kernow culture’.” The best part is, by quoting ‘cornwallliving10’ you can get 10% your day – bargain! Clearing Spa

Kneehigh’s unique brand of theatre

returns to Cornwall

Kneehigh’s Asylum is back in a brand-new site at The Lost Gardens of Heligan this summer and plans are afoot to create the ultimate night out. This year it’s all about breaking the rules in style, with pop-up shows, surprise acts and spontaneous events invigorating a season of world-class theatre and epic live music. Cheer as daft dictators are overthrown; hear a vast Karaoke choir (you!) sing together in perfect protest; watch lovesick amphibians hop to the beat; and go quackers for the return of Cornwall’s favourite, flightless duck The Asylum will run from 2nd August until 22nd September. Tickets for UBU Karaoke!, The Dancing Frog and FUP are now on sale via Hall for Cornwall. For more information visit www.kneehigh.co.uk, or join WeAreKneehigh on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

Nestled in the stunning Cornish countryside on the south coast is The Cornwall Hotel, Spa & Estate, a luxurious four-star hotel with an emphasis on attending to every comfort. As well as fantastic food and lavish accommodation, one of its crowning glories is The Clearing Spa, complete with treatment rooms, steam room, dry sauna, fitness suite and a large infinity pool overlooking the historic walled garden. It’s the perfect location to unwind and re-energise in glorious surroundings.

So, with Lauren in place, now is surely the perfect time to give it a go and enjoy some proper pampering. The Cornwall is currently offering a one-night ‘Relax & Revive’ break for two, from only £259. Stay in one of the beautifully styled bedrooms, dine at the Elephant Brasserie, with £26 dinner allowance each, tuck into a hearty Cornish breakfast, and make the most of all the spa facilities. What’s more, you can savour your choice of a rose facial or scalp, neck and shoulder massage each. Sounds like bliss!

What’s more, The Clearing Spa has just announced the appointment of a new spa manager, Lauren Roberts, who brings a wealth of experience with her, having worked as a beauty therapist, deputy spa manager and spa manager in a range of locations including on cruise ships and some of Cornwall’s most prestigious hotels.

For more information call 01726 874051 or visit www.thecornwall.com

Lauren tells us: “I’m really excited to be joining the team at The Cornwall, bringing my enthusiasm and passion for creating a truly luxurious experience for guests.”

STYLEHOME DELIVERS BESPOKE WINDOW STYLING at its very best As architects make more use of modern building techniques, incorporating larger, more complex shaped windows to maximise light and views, dressing them has become far more challenging. At Stylehome, the team firmly believes that because each property and client has different requirements, each curtain and blind needs to be designed individually, bespoke to the unique needs of each customer. Occasionally an off-the-shelf solution may not be available or could result in an unsatisfactory compromise. Mark Mitchell, Managing Director at this impressive Cornish business tells us: “We enjoy working with our customers to maximise the potential of each room’s interior quality of light, as well as the views outside. We have a proven track record of solving di cult window shapes and providing solutions. So if you have a challenging window or a view that deserves something special then why not pay Stylehome a visit? For more information call 01872 560500 or visit www.stylehome.co.uk

Water you waiting for? People in Porthleven are getting very serious about stopping waste plastic getting into the sea. Refresh Porthleven, a smart new initiative set up by a group of volunteers, has created reusable cups and bottles allowing people to refill rather than use and throw away single-use plastic.

Dai Lawton, spokesperson for Refresh Porthleven, says,“We’re overwhelmed by the positive response to our anti-plastic campaign and the way businesses are supporting it. Now the season’s here, there’s the opportunity for local people to get more involved.

Many cafés, restaurants and shops are now selling the freshly designed Refresh Porthleven water bottles as well as their bamboo coffee cups. By using one of these or any other refillable bottle, you can get free water refills at any café or restaurant if you see the Refill sticker on their window. What’s more, if you take your bamboo coffee cup into practically anywhere that sells coffee, they will give you a discount!

There’s now a call for more volunteers, to help them get Plastic-Free status, for their stall events such as the Porthleven Food Festival and Lifeboat Day, and also for their Surfers Against Sewage beach and harbour clean on the 15th April. For more information visit www.refreshporthleven.org.uk

PORTHLEVEN PHOTOGRAPHER making waves Surf photographer Mike Lacey has been amongst the elements in Cornwall this winter, capturing some of his best images to date. Mike tells us: “It’s been the most amazing winter in Cornwall for me as a wave photographer and to have snow several times in Cornwall was so amazing to see and photograph. It was more like an Icelandic photo shoot for a few days! This icicle shot at Praa Sands was for me a standout photo from the winter and seeing it in a big HD metal print really brings it to life. I’m doing a lot of filming in the waves at the moment too, which can be seen on the big screen in the Porthleven gallery. It’s so mesmerising watching these waves break in slow motion!” For more information visit www.wavesgallery.co.uk

Introducing Cornish Wine Tours – new to Cornwall this year! This year sees the launch of Cornish Wine Tours, an exciting new day tour based in north Cornwall. Cornish Wine Tours founder Kate McBurnie will be running the tours five days a week from her hometown of Padstow and visitors can expect to explore Trevibban Mill, Camel Valley Vineyard, Knightor Winery, as well as Polgoon and Bosue Vineyard. The tours offer a fun and informative day out that is unique to the Duchy. The Cornish Wine Tour minibus can seat groups of up to 13, meaning that whether you are a couple or part of a larger group, nobody gets lumbered with the hassle of having to be designated driver, and what’s more, the full day tour comes with a three-course lunch served at one of the vineyards! Most importantly, you’ll have plenty of opportunities

to en oy Cornwall’s finest awardwinning wines. Kate tells us: “Our tours offer the chance to visit all these beautiful vineyards in one day, sample their wines, and perhaps learn a thing or two along the way about the vineyard and production. You don’t need any prior knowledge about wine – simply a love of trying new things and exploring what Cornwall has to offer. We want you to sit back, relax and enjoy a fabulous day of wine tasting.” With tours running throughout the summer and with lunch and wine tasters all included in the incredible price of £125 per person per full day, or just £75 per person per half-day, what’s not to love? To book your tour email info@cornishwinetours.com or visit www.cornishwinetours.com

LIFE CHANGING DENTISTRY TRURO

At Pure we have decades of combined experience providing Advanced Dental Solutions. These days nobody needs to be troubled by their teeth. All of the images below are of real clients.

SINGLE OR MULTIPLE MISSING TEETH

When you have lost a tooth it not only causes emotional distress, but also upsets the equilibrium in your mouth. If you lose a large tooth at the back of your mouth, you will normally compensate by eating food on the other side of your mouth, by doing this you will eectively be placing excess pressure on these teeth which, over time could cause them to break or be lost.If you lose a front tooth it is likely to have a massive eect on your self-confidence.

DENTURE STABILISATION

Loose dentures can cause frustration and embarrassment. Wearing an ill-fitting denture can make it dicult to eat certain types of food - which in turn could have detrimental eects on your digestion and overall health. Many people with loose dentures will use lots of denture adhesive to compensate which can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth and make cleaning the denture dicult. Dental implants can help stabilise dentures, allowing you to eat whatever you like with confidence.

NEW SMILE IN A DAY

In suitable patients we can replace a conventional removable denture with a fixed restoration in just one day! We use a revolutionary approach that has radically changed the replacement of lost teeth. We can now remove failing teeth, place new implants and provide a fixed full restoration in a single day. This approach to dental treatment allows you to rediscover the feeling of being able to smile with confidence and it allows you to begin to enjoy eating again.

TAKE THE FIRST STEP. We offer complimentary treatment adviser appointments where a highly qualified member of our team will make treatment recommendations after listening your personal situation. Or attend one of our free, relaxed and informal presentations, held regularly at the practice. ALL ATTENDEES RECEIVE A FREE ASSESSMENT WORTH £120 WITH PRINCIPAL DENTIST MARK DURNAL

Don’t miss Push the Boat Out Day at the

Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, Falmouth

Holiday home tips In the latest instalment of his series of holiday home tips, George at Cornish Traditional Cottages discusses how to buy a holiday home in Cornwall.

All ages and abilities are warmly invited to Push the Boat Out Day at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club on Saturday 12th May between 11am and 5pm. Families and children are most welcome, and anyone can ust pop along and see if the RC C floats their boat! Have a go at yacht or dinghy sailing. ife ackets and qualified instructors are all on hand and on the day you can enjoy trips around the harbour. The RNLI will be in attendance, giving anyone who needs one a free life jacket check. What’s more, visitors can discover the fabulous waterside club house and bar, chat with club members and get the lowdown on the club’s facilities, including its free launch service to get you out to your boat, the RYA courses that are on offer, exciting weekly races, free weekly social sailing, plus a fun

year-round social programme. It’s a great place to make friends and get out on the water, and the best part is there’s no need to own a boat to be a member, so why not pop along and give sailing a go? For more information call 01326 312126 or visit www.royalcornwallyachtclub.org

Finally, when you’ve settled on an area, use a property finder service. If you’re not able or inclined to source, search and visit holiday homes for sale in Cornwall, there are buying agents that specialise in doing this for you. They’ll often know of properties that are not yet on the market, but like any service, this will come at a cost.”

Eco Garden Pods at new Padstow showroom

Business Director Martin Dean explains: “We’re very excited to offer our new Eco Garden Pods in either barrel, box or oval design, satisfying the growing demand for more outdoor living space.” Kernow Springs’ new improved showroom at

George stresses the importance of doing your research, whether online, on foot, or talking to locals and tourists. “Get a feel for a place and its prosperity as a holiday home destination, then talk to some professionals. We at Cornish Traditional Cottages can point you in the right direction and we usually have some homes on our books that are currently for sale – a great opportunity to buy into something that’s already working and with an existing repeat client base.” eorge explains the importance of figuring out what it is that’s drawing visitors there, how long they’re typically staying for and whether they’re repeat or first time visitors.

Kernow Springs unveils

Introducing the all-new multi-purpose Eco Garden Pods from outdoor spa specialists, Kernow Springs. These new garden buildings can be used in a multitude of ways, from outside o ce spaces and garden rooms to saunas, and they incorporate the same eye catching design as the company’s wood fired hot tubs that have already taken the UK by storm.

It’s important to dig beneath the surface of your favourite Cornish towns to understand the property market and tourist economy, George explains. “Monitor the property market for a few months, see which properties move and which stay on the market. Talk to holiday letting agents to understand which properties appeal most in which locations. It’s also worth checking sold house prices to get a feel for market valuations versus actual sale prices.”

For more information call 01208 893980 or visit www.corncott.com Trevisker Garden Centre, Padstow will be hosting its Grand Opening on the last Bank Holiday weekend in May, from Saturday to Monday, where you’ll find some great promotions on new Eco pods, and the ever-popular wood fired hot tubs. You can even book yourself into the on-site Wild Spa! For more information call 07779 374017 or visit www.kernowsprings.co.uk

O

pen Studios Cornwall 2018 promises the richest mix yet as more than 320 artists, designers and makers – the county’s creative movers and shakers – invite us into curious spaces and beautiful places to experience their artistic practice. From Saturday 19th to Monday 28th May, set-designers and sculptors; milliners and magazine editors; painters, printmakers and potters will throw open their studio doors to the general public to stage one of the UK’s most alluring art trails. From Constantine and Callington to Polzeath and Portlooe, in historic harbours, verdant valleys and glorious gardens, a record-breaking number of participants will unleash their creativity in the 14th year of this popular arts initiative. “Whether working with glass or graphite, in paint or porcelain, with the lathe or the loom, the sheer variety of disciplines this year will captivate and inspire,” says Director of Creative Skills, Jane Sutherland, who leads the scheme. “Not only does Open Studios provide us with an intimate glimpse of the creative process, it also takes us on a journey to previously unseen corners, enabling us to experience Cornwall from an entirely different perspective.” What’s more, this year’s event will take in half-term and the Spring Bank Holiday so that even more people will be able to grab a guide, plot their route and marvel at the diversity of colour and pattern; line and form that is to be discovered. Through their work, artists will also reveal the inner workings of their imaginations, whether they are inspired by the dramatic

energy of the Cornish coastline; the frailty of the human condition or the profound power of the natural world. Set-designer and sculptor, Rebecca McDonald certainly takes inspiration from nature as she works with wool to create engaging creatures in her studio at The Potager Garden in Constantine. “Creating objects and installations that connect us to the landscape and the life within it is really important to me,” Rebecca explains. “It is that familiarity and sense of place that I want my work to evoke in people’s imaginations – a feeling that you are, somehow, in the company of an old friend.” Rebecca’s sculptural felted work is just part of her story. From designing installations for shop windows in High Street Kensington to conjuring up urban forests in London’s ast nd, or creating floating gardens within corporate HQs, like so many of her generation, Rebecca left Cornwall to pursue a successful career, only to return, pulled back by the heartstrings of home.

| COVER FEATURE “Cornwall has always been a major inspiration – not only in terms of its landscape but through its culture and art scene,” says Rebecca. “Witnessing immersive outdoor theatre by Kneehigh and Miracle as a child blew my mind, and showed me an alternative to experiencing art in the formal setting of a gallery or theatre.” These early experiences inspired Rebecca to study Art and Event Production at Bournemouth Arts Institute, and to become a creative producer for arts and music festivals. “This provided lots of scope to make and design interiors for venues and stage sets, often with minimal budgets and resources, but it enabled me to get my hands dirty and create installations that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to make otherwise. This also gave me confidence and a great testing ground for my ideas as my work had an immediate and often highly exuberant audience!” From giant origami animal totems for Glastonbury to serve as entrance archways and meeting points to 3D sculptures of foxes, rabbits and bears to bring the pages of a children’s book to life, whatever idea Rebecca has in her head always leads to making something with her hands. “For me, the creative process is like a long wiggly road but it all links - much like a Cornish country lane,” adds Rebecca.

Within each section, artists are listed geographically then alphabetically. You can either plan to visit a particular location and look up artists who are exhibiting in that area or visit a particular artist and find out who else is in their neighbourhood. Broadening her skills through an adult education course and postgraduate study, she now creates unusual art glass inspired by Cornwall. Experimenting with temperatures, techniques and chemical reactions, Sandy produces one-off pieces for the wall, the garden and jewellery to catch the light. www.sandyhortonglass.co.uk JACQUES CABIN, TRENEGLOS/LAUNCESTON Jacques Cabin’s eye-catching alternative to massproduction furniture is responsibly sourced. t is not often that properties on Polwheveral Creek come up for sale, and we are sure this one won’t be on the market for long! Polwheveral is a tributary of the magical Helford river, home to Daphne Du Maurier’s famous novel, Frenchman’s Creek. Living here would truly provide a Swallows and Amazons lifestyle. Trenant itself is a beautiful contrast of old and new – the original cottage has a spectacular oak-framed extension that offers bright and airy accommodation. The extension is also self-contained and so gives the option for lucrative holiday letting income, either separately or in combination with the cottage. Many of the traditional features have been retained in the cottage. Here you will find a spacious sitting/dining room, warmed by a log burner and the beautiful kitchen comes complete with an Aga. Upstairs there is a generous master suite and two further bedrooms, so plenty of room for a family. The extension has two mezzanines in its apex, one set out as a bedroom and the other as a reading area, a lovely place in which to relax with a good book and a coffee after a day on the water. Outside, the garden is a joy to behold with winding paths and a raised deck, perfect for an evening cocktail whilst admiring the view over the creek below. A nearby footpath gives easy reach to the foreshore – these are some of the best sailing waters in the country with the renowned Helford river leading out into Falmouth Bay, making it an ideal home for the keen sailor.

Although a hidden gem, Trenant is tranquil rather than remote. The nearby village of Constantine offers a very broad range of facilities, with a number of shops and pubs including the award-winning Trengilly Wartha Inn. The cosmopolitan town of Falmouth is only a few miles away, as are some of Cornwall’s finest beaches. Either as a home or a holiday cottage, Trenant is a property where memories are just waiting to be made.

Perks of the property include views of the water plus an on-site boat park, meaning if that vista proves too tempting, you can buy that boat you’ve always dreamed of and keep it close by. There’s also off-street parking, so you can keep your pride and joy safe and away from the main road! Head inside and you’ll find a large, openplan living space on the ground floor, with patio doors opening out onto a large decked area on the harbour’s edge, with easy ladderto-water access for when you finally manage to launch your new vessel! The current owners have recently refurbished the property, a project that has seen the installation of a brand new kitchen, luxurious new bathrooms as well as new windows and door to the rear. It’s not often the market turns up a property that doesn’t need any extra work to bring it up to the modern standards we all aspire to, particularly one that comes available with vacant possession and no onward chain. For this reason, we don’t expect Fox’s Yard to remain on the market for long, so be sure to contact Harding Wakefield to book your viewing, before somebody beats you to it!

Jo Eldridge, founder of Jo & Co, reflects on her first three years in business and how her store has become a go-to destination in Cornwall.

é ABOVE Jo’s store has become a mecca for anyone updating their interior ì INSET Jo Eldridge, founder of Jo & Co

When did you open your shop and what kind of store is it? “I opened the store in December 2014. I always planned to open a lifestyle store, but to start with, I wanted to just play it safe by selling a few interior pieces. Once I knew our market, we began to expand our collections. Now we sell a great mix of things I love, whether it’s homeware, beauty, womenswear, gifts, even upholstered furniture. “We have some lovely customers that return to us again and again for a particular brand, such as Wanderlust Life or Neom, but in general I think people come to us for a good browse, and just for the experience of being here.” Why did you open a store? “It’s always been my dream to have a store, but I never really thought it was possible. Then, when I was six months pregnant, the opportunity came up at the Hawksfield site, and it suddenly got me thinking. Although it wasn’t the best timing, my husband said ‘Go for it’, and we’ve never looked back. I took early maternity leave from my job, and started to plan.” Jo also designed the store. She explains: “My husband Tom is a great carpenter, so between us (along with a few builders and electricians) we managed to turn an industrial building into what it is today.”

What makes Jo & Co unique? “Everything! We really are different, and we’re always evolving and changing. I think that’s why people keep coming back. There’s always something different from week to week. In terms of what inspires me, I’m loving the beach vibe at the moment, but that’s probably because it’s winter and I’m desperate for some sun!” What have you learnt in the past three years? “Oh my, a huge amount. I was so naive in the early days. I have my business head on much more now. I’ve also had to teach myself how to switch off. On Fridays I try to shut down my computer and forget about everything until the next week. It’s important that my family has my full attention without the distraction of emails.” What’s next for Jo&Co? “Well, after a very successful year of selling our furniture, we are excited to announce that we’ll be opening a furniture showroom this spring. We can’t wait for it to open!”

hilip Whear Windows and Conservatories have always adopted an open approach to consultation over the 30 years they have been in business. By working with the client, as well as taking a sympathetic approach to the location and environment, this relationship has inspired some interesting and clever trends in conservatory design, resulting in some truly bespoke installations. One such trend has become known as a ‘reverse lean-to’ conservatory, characterised by a single pitched roof sloping up, away from the adjoining property. Company director and designer, Philip Whear recalls its inception: “Back in 2003 I visited a lady in Perranwell for a consultation. I was immediately struck by her home’s unique contemporary style – it was like walking into an art gallery. Our design had to be as unique as her taste. So, after talking through many options we ended up creating our first ever reverse lean-to conservatory the first to my knowledge in Cornwall.” Contemporary in style, the reverse lean-to design is highly functional, particularly on a bungalow where the eaves height is an issue. It provides ample room height for a light and airy feel.

Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories are equally adept at creating stunning conservatories with traditionally inspired styles and materials. A recent project for a couple in Carnon Downs was based on a request for a classically styled conservatory with as near to zero maintenance as possible. Philip Whear was able to recommend using green oak, however, untypical for this kind of construction, the roof was glazed instead of conventional slate to allow more light to flood in. Other unique conservatory installations have included double storey, asymmetric, two colour and traditionally styled orangeries, all performing to modern standards while delivering on functionality and style.

omfortable, well-made furniture is at the very heart of every home, which makes buying a new sofa an important decision for any homeowner. As the old adage goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover, and the same applies to upholstery. While looks and style are important, especially when it comes to matching your home décor, comfort and performance have surely got to be the priority. According to the experts at Richard Cook, there is simply no substitute for nglish upholstery skills, using the finest materials with time honoured methods. Introducing the Tetrad upholstery collection. Craftsmanship is evident in every single Tetrad piece, and it all starts in the frame,

which is made from FSC hardwood that’s screwed, glued and dowelled, before supporting a proper coil sprung base. As usual, it’s often the things you don’t see in the finished product that are really important when it comes to maintaining your sofa’s shape and comfort, and feathers are a great example. The traditional seat filling of fine furniture, according to Richard Cook, there’s no alternative to duck feathers when it comes to achieving that delightful wrap around feeling. Tetrad’s pieces are made using the best, most traditional English upholstery skills and for this reason, they’re destined to become family heirlooms, promising to provide style and comfort for your family for years to come. Take the Long Island collection, for instance. The result of a collaboration with Ralph Lauren’s signature fabrics, this collection explores a fusion of classic British design and the epitome of the American dream, as represented by Ralph Lauren. Rich fabric finishes are hand upholstered across this classic design, signifying the essence of the collection and offering a flexible portrayal of co-ordinated fabric choices that are suitable for a variety of homes. Sophisticated, sumptuous and stylish is very much the essence of the Long Island collection. After months of design consultation, Tetrad’s creative team has selected a variety of co-ordinated and glamorous fabrics in order to truly represent Ralph Lauren, offering great value while ensuring the values of British craftsmanship are retained. Richard Cook appreciates that individuals want choice, yet the team is confident that the fantastic array of fabrics in the Ralph Lauren swatch books will satisfy even the most discerning of customers. And, given that each piece is made bespoke to order by Tetrad’s talented team of craftspeople in Lancashire, it’s worth taking time to settle on your perfect combination.

nterior design is becoming much more important in homes these days and the industry is seeing more and more people making smaller changes that make bigger differences, rather than completely overhauling their décor. One thing that’s often overlooked, but can arguably make more difference than anything else is what runs beneath your feet; whether it’s carpet, vinyl or hardwood flooring, flooring can be the difference between a satisfactory décor and your dream one. Over time, life can be pretty tough on all kinds of flooring, with muddy boots running up and down corridors, drinks being spilled, wine being sloshed at dinner parties, and before long your otherwise beautiful home can seem shabby with just a quick glance at the floor. If this is the case for you, why not take some time and focus on the revamp your floor needs Bodmin Flooring Centre owner Colin Woolley recommends walking through your home, spending some time considering the style you’ve cultivated in each room, and how different types of flooring can help complement it. Does your classic kitchen need a sleek floor to counterbalance the

traditional feel? Perhaps your living room needs a plush carpet to drive home that cosy, inviting feel you’ve been aiming for. With so many options available to you, it can be useful to pop into Bodmin Flooring Centre and speak to the team, who have answers to all your decorative questions. David himself has more than 30 years of experience, often providing bespoke designs for clients, and along with his team is certainly equipped to help you through your revamp process with ease. FRAMING CORNWALL

We catch up with Carpenter Oak Cornwall founders Tim Simpson and Tom Jubb, after three lucrative years of framing some of Cornwall’s most beautiful spaces.

S

ince setting up the framing yard near St Ives in 2014, the team at Carpenter Oak Cornwall has taken on a variety of projects, from small domestic extensions and remodelling work to large commercial builds across the county. Current live pro ects for the first half of 2 1 include a function hall on the Isles of Scilly, a new house on the Roseland peninsula, an extension in Coverack and an all-timber build near Bude. The beauty and versatility of a post and beam timber frame has proved to be a winning formula across the region, along with the growing appeal of using a material that’s both natural and sustainable. Indeed, no two projects are the same, and each building is bespoke, designed individually to suit the needs of the client. Of course, each project depends on budget, but the possibilities of each site and what each building will be used for are vast, whether it’s to improve and extend an existing property, or create a completely new space, like the gallery at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, completed last year. Tim Simpson and Tom Jubb, who set up the workshop, are both originally from Cornwall. Having started their timber framing careers with the original Carpenter Oak yard in Devon, they were keen to bring their expertise back to

Cornwall and cater for the local market. “Being local to a project has huge advantages,” Tim explains. “Each job is different, so every design and detail has to be thought through by both our Designer and Head Carpenter. Some projects require multiple site visits throughout the build, so it’s a huge benefit that we can be available for these. This helps each individual job run as smoothly as possible.” Since 2014, Carpenter Oak has supported the Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show in Wadebridge, meeting many future clients at the show. Tim tells us: “Over the last three years, several projects have blossomed from seeds sown at the Wadebridge show. Off the top of my head, this includes extensions in St Ives and Porthtowan, a studio in Padstow and a new Woodland house near Falmouth. The show is a great place to chat informally and get ideas off the ground with the next step often to then meet on site. “We have always really enjoyed putting our oak frame up at the show and seeing the reaction it gets from visitors. Seeing the wood up close and understanding the hand crafted methods and work that goes into every frame we design really gives people a tangible sense of the work we do.”

The show takes place at the Royal Cornwall Showground on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May and includes a huge range of selfbuild companies offering a multitude of options, as well as interiors and gardens and some of the best food producers in Cornwall. Carpenter Oak Cornwall has close working relationships with many other exhibitors whose trades help piece together the jigsaw of building a project, all on the same day under one roof! Tom ubb finishes No matter what stage your project is at, it really helps us when people bring along as much information as possible. It might be site photographs, architectural drawings or examples of something you’ve seen. Combining beautiful doors with unrivalled lock technology from Ultion, Longrock Windows might just have the home security solution you’ve been looking for.

ongrock Windows, a family run company in Penzance offers a range of doors and windows that’s tailored to suit Cornwall’s unique environment. Crewed by a team that understands your need for style as well as unrivalled functionality, Longrock Windows appreciates the importance of security when it comes to your home. This is why they now offer bespoke doors that are fitted with ultra-secure ltion locks. Approved by locksmiths, British Standards and, indeed, the Police, these locks are the most secure on the market, with an array of functions that help make life easier while adding the multiple layers of security to your home. The supplied keys are basic, but for an additonal charge, can be upgraded in a range of colours, so you can colour code how you secure your home. You can also opt for a built-in Bluetooth speaker, which can pair up with your smartphone enabling you to ‘call’ your misplaced keys. This upgrade also allows you to press a button on the keys to help find your smartphone, so the security works both ways! Perhaps the most impressive feature, however, is ltion ey Control, which ties your unique encrypted keycode to your email address. With this feature in place, you first need access to the keycode, and then to your email address to confirm key duplication. This ensures that nobody can copy your keys without your express permission. Onto the actual locks and again, there are a number of features worth noting. First is the ltion trademarked ock Down Mode™, a hidden lock inside the ltion door lock that activates when it detects an attack. What’s more, where as it can take up to nine seconds for an intruder to break in by snapping a standard lock, when Lock Down Mode™ is activated, any intruder is forced to drill through a substance that’s 25% denser than iron – not something, according to the ltion website, that happens quickly, or quietly Indeed, ltion guarantees that, should a burglary take place within ten years of installation and entry is achieved by snapping an ltion lock, you will receive £1,000 – just be sure to register your guarantee within 28 days of installation!

é ABOVE Choose from a range of styles to complement your home

INSET These doors are not only beautiful, they’re ultra secure too!

All of this, when combined with a door that’s aesthetically pleasing and tailored to suit your unique Cornish property means you can rest easy knowing that your home is well protected, while still being the envy of your friends every time they cross the threshold.

THE AGE

W

ith a classic design and perfected ease of use, there is nothing quite like cooking on a range cooker. Unfortunately, the running costs of these kitchen staples are often quite high and can taint an otherwise wonderful appliance. The team over at Cornish Cooker Conversions pride themselves on their ability to reduce the running costs of your much-loved range cooker by up to 80% by converting it to electric. This ensures you keep the centrepiece of your kitchen without parting with copious amounts of your hard-earned money, which could be spent on other home improvements or even a lovely holiday! The expert engineers at Cornish Cooker Conversions radically re-engineer the inner construction of your range cooker on site, while greatly improving the functionality. “We know that many range cookers are very expensive to run, but to replace them is a huge investment,” says Cornish Cooker Conversions’ Elizabeth Jackson. “But with some clever engineering on our part we are able to increase operational flexibility, ensure your cooker is fume-free and reduce the burden of servicing, all in addition to the opportunity to make big savings in fuel costs.” The team can convert oil, gas, 30 amp, 13

amp and solid fuel range cookers from as far back as post-Second World War models. The conversions will mean that the hobs work independently. This means that you can fry, boil, simmer and steam, all on different hobs while cooking a roast in the oven, just as you would with an electric oven. Indeed, cooking has never been easier as the heat-up times are also vastly improved while you gain more control of the heat levels. If your range cooker heats the hot water for your home, either an immersion will be needed or the hot water cylinder should be plumbed into the central heating boiler. In either instance, the team at Cornish Cooker Conversions can advise you on the best course of action. Thanks to advances in technology you can now control your range cooker through an app on your phone, which means you can turn it on and off, even when hundreds of miles from home! It’s perfect for those who want to spend more time enjoying Cornish life by the sea and less time beholden to the kitchen.

W

hat with the freezing conditions we’ve been experiencing recently, heating our homes properly has never seemed so important. Fortunately, even when it’s well below zero outside, the installation of an e cient heating system ensures stable and soft warmth for your home or business, giving the ambience of a warm summer’s day. Research has shown that the ideal temperature for a home should be 21°C, as this offers an ideal comfort with the added benefits of lower consumption costs. Heating expert Rointe has strived to ensure this temperature is maintained while taking careful consideration of various other parameters such as ensuring heat is delivered without hot or cold draughts, a stable temperature with minimum fluctuations and making sure moisture in the air stays at a healthy and comfortable level. With all of these aspects in mind, Rointe designed a range of radiators and towel rails that are specifically designed to maintain absolute comfort and wellbeing while also offering savings on electricity through energy e ciency. The range of products also comes with complete control, one of the reasons that Rointe is becoming one of the UK’s

favourite heating brands. You can control your heating anytime and from anywhere with Rointe’s connect app, which can be easily accessed by any smartphone, tablet or PC. Programme your heating to activate only when you need it, whether for your home, o ce or business, all controlled from one location. Why waste money heating your home when you aren’t there The app also shows you real-time statistics such as the daily, monthly, and annual usage as well as how much you’re saving. This delivers a control of your heating like never before. So, banish the wintry chill from your home and take a look at these fantastic and controllable heating systems.

GARDENER

Landscape designer, author and TV presenter Matt James, AKA The City Gardener, swaps urban life for the great Cornish countryside.

W

hile he may have escaped city life, landscape designer and all-round gardening expert Matt James shows no sign of slowing down. Indeed, he seems to have about ten things going on, at any given time. By his own admission, he has lots of fingers in lots of pies”, from tending to his own half-acre to designing gardens for others, and running the Landscape Design degrees at The Eden Project. He even finds a bit of time for dad surfing’. Matt is known to millions as The City Gardener, who burst onto our screens in 2002, offering a fresh and contemporary take on gardening, bringing much needed greenery to urban spaces. We’re eager to find out how and why the former ondoner of the ear’ traded the big smoke for the countryside. Matt’s passion for gardens blossomed ABOVE shortly after school, working at a market Matt James garden in south London, “growing beans ì RIGHT and driving around on tractors.” Following LEFT a degree in horticulture he began teaching, BELOW sharing his natural warmth and passion for A selection of Matt’s plants. Things started to get interesting when recent projects, highlighting his a T producer friend suggested he’d be great technique for in front of the camera. So, he put together stripping things a showreel, kick-starting a fruitful media back and letting the career, from The City Gardener to Selling setting dictate the planting theme Houses on Channel 4, and Great British

at least 50 Budhas on site, one of which scaling around 2 foot. Matt’s approach is to make the landscape more authentic, more sympathetic to the Cornish environment. He refers to this as “designing with a rubber, rather than a pencil” – the notion of stripping it back to create something less incongruous, embracing the natural environment and letting the landscape speak for itself. As Matt explains, particularly in coastal regions like Cornwall, you have to follow this lead in choice of planting. “In every project, you pick plants that fit the climate, working within the demands of the location and environment. Cornwall has a warmer climate compared to many parts of the UK, but a wetter one too, so the palette of plants is very different. It’s subtropical, verdant, and larger than life; full of form and structure.” Matt continues: “Any designer should embrace where they’re working, using plants that will thrive. I love coastal gardens – they demand careful thought and can be problematic. Actually, it’s easier to have a tricky site, as it naturally limits the options.” Essentially, you plant based on what is appropriate for the site itself. If you’re inspired to redesign your own garden, Matt gives us some invaluable tips. “Time spent in the garden is important, getting to grips with the space, learning about its characteristics before making wholesale change. I really believe that the landscape tells you what’s best you ust need to take some time to let it do that Work with the space, don’t impress upon it. My ob is to help you realise that potential.”

"

Garden Revival on BBC2, plus stints working across America, and a string of books, several for the Royal Horticultural Society, the most recent being RHS How to Plant a Garden. But while he’ll always have the city in his heart, the draw of Cornwall proved too much to resist. Matt and his childhood sweetheart, Ellie, were looking to escape the London rat race and find a rural retreat to raise their family. With great childhood memories of Cornish holidays, and friends already in the area, it all fell into place when a post at Falmouth University came up. Cornwall is place you don’t want to leave once here,’ says Matt. I get grumpy whenever I’m asked to leave Cornwall gets its hooks into you. I can’t imagine not being here. We live in a lovely village, with great neighbours, it’s friendly and relaxed. People actually talk to each other unlike in ondon We have amazing scenery, sea and countryside right on our doorstep.” Matt and Ellie love exploring the Helford and nearby beaches with the family. “Being able to go to the beach straight after work is amazing We do lots of kayaking.” And, of course, for someone with a passion for gardens, Cornwall provides endless inspiration. I find places like Trebah arden really inspiring. I sway towards natural, relaxed and atmospheric design, adopting a plantsfirst approach, explains Matt. If a client wants to build a wall, I’ll suggest putting in a hedge I love natural materials, like oak I have a particular penchant for rusty chains, and like visiting reclamation yards, exploring that hybrid between older materials and the natural elements.” A case in point is a current five-acre pro ect near Leedstown. The previous owner created their own interpretation of a Thai garden, with

ROLLING WITH

s e g n a h c e h t Situated just outside St Ives with panoramic views of west Cornwall, Trink Dairy is leading the charge in response to modern attitudes towards healthy eating.

M

ore of us are now looking for food that’s both locally and sustainably sourced, and here in Cornwall, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by a number of high-quality food and drink producers. Attitudes to healthy eating are also improving, meaning many are now seeking out natural, unprocessed foods, also realising that low-fat products aren’t necessarily healthier. One Cornish business that is responding to these shifts in attitude is Trink Dairy.

Grazing their herd of 350 Fresian and Jersey crossbreeds across 270 acres of pasture, with views towards St Ives bay and St Michael’s Mount, owners Chris and Rachel Knowles say that this is the secret to their unique product. While it is pasteurised, to ensure it’s safe for anybody to drink, Trink Dairy milk is not homogenised or standardised. When homogenised, Chris tells us: “It’s put through a mechanical process to break up the fat globules and distribute them more evenly through the milk. Here at Trink Dairy, our

milk is simply pasteurised and then bottled, and it’s often on sale within just a few hours!” The cows at Trink Dairy are outside for most of the year and are almost entirely grass fed. The couple have developed a system of moving them around the farm, allowing them to feast on the grass when it’s at its most nutritious. Chris even measures the grass, plotting its growth on a computer programme, ensuring the cows are always grazing in the field that will yield the most energy and protein. This translates to the cows always producing their best milk. It’s also a much more environmentally friendly approach, with very little feed being transported onto the farm. The Knowles family have been members of Cornish Mutual for as long as they can remember. When Rachel began researching how she could extend the business to invite the public into the dairy and sell directly to customers, she decided to seek advice from the south west insurer. Cornish Mutual Field Force Inspector, Jackie Coutts, has advised Trink Dairy for 15 years, working closely with them to ensure their insurance covered them for the new venture. She tells us: “It’s great to see how Trink Dairy has adapted to the changing environment. Rachel and Chris are completely committed to the dairy and making the best milk they possibly can. People want to buy fresh, natural produce, and Trink airy is filling this niche in the local market.” The venture began as Rachel started selling milk from the house, but she soon found she couldn’t keep up with the growing demand. While Chris is responsible for managing the farm on which he grew up, Rachel took the reins when it came to finding new ways in which to sell directly to the public. Perhaps the most surprising way people can now buy the milk is a vending machine

inside the dairy. Also stocked with eggs and other local produce, the machine is open 24 hours a day, so anybody can pick up a couple of litres of fresh, local milk, whenever they find themselves in need Rachel is also working with another local family business, the St Ives Food Company, to distribute the milk to preschools, cafés and restaurants. It seems then that there’s an appetite for Trink’s fresh and unhomogenised whole milk. Having just dashed to local café and delicatessen Scarlet Wines for an urgent delivery to serve the breakfast crowd, Rachel tells us she’s proud to have Origin Coffee among her customers. “Apparently our milk makes the best cappuccinos and lattes. It tastes great but, unlike other milk, it keeps the latte art pristine and glossy, meaning baristas love it! “We built the new dairy parlour ten years ago when we had no idea we would one day be selling directly to customers. With the fluctuation in milk prices, people are asking where they can buy local milk, so it makes sense for us to do this, and it’s really taking off. We’re so proud of our product: it’s all about lower volume, higher quality milk from grass fed cows.” Chris finishes, saying The last generation got used to drinking homogenised semiskimmed milk, which is basically the leftovers from cream or butter. We really want to offer people milk that’s as close to the natural product as possible, and older people say our milk tastes like it used to. Younger people are often surprised to hear that it’s 95% fat free too, which is only making it more popular.”

estnorth Manor Farm in Duloe, near Looe on the south Cornish coast, is home to a cider company that has been making a range of ciders from 100% freshly pressed apples since 1999. Founded by Andy Atkinson, awardwinning company Cornish Orchards works harmoniously with the seasons, creating a range of whole fruit ciders that are fermented from freshly pressed apples throughout the winter months by a team of expert cider makers who are highly passionate about the craftsmanship and detail that goes into making their products. This month sees an exciting new rebrand that will bring extra visual appeal to Cornish Orchards’ already eye-catching glassware and bottle designs. Alongside the new design, this month also heralds the arrival of a brand new dry cider that is full of West Country character. We put Hooked on the Rocks in Swanpool under the Cornwall Living tried-and-tasted microscope.

Overlooking the water, our Fisherman’s Feast was an appropriate choice given our seaside location

M

y personal favourite out-ofhours task – the secret food review – came on the perfect spring evening. Our destination was Hooked on the Rocks and its stunning location in Swanpool, Falmouth was the ideal place to spend the first warm evening of the year. The location of Hooked on the Rocks really is spectacular. Seemingly dug into the coastal cliffs, your entrance to the restaurant begins with stunning panoramic views across Falmouth bay and of the fantastically regal Pendennis Castle. Once in the restaurant we were quickly greeted by the friendly host and guided to our tables. After she took our order for drinks we were able to take in the impressive refurb that Hooked recently underwent. The interior is stylish and sleek and benefits from a well thought out balance of openness and a degree of privacy. Vintage style black boards informed us that the produce was sourced locally from Newlyn Fish Market – a good sign that our seafood was going to be fresh! For starters, we ordered the steamed mussels a la marinière, and roasted tiger prawns in their shells with garlic and parsley, both served with crusty bread. After not ordering mussels during a meal a few weeks previous (and immediately regretting my decision once the food came out) I had been craving them ever since. Hooked did

not disappoint. The marinière was brilliantly balanced and the crusty bread was dense enough to soak up a hearty amount. I also heard – over my slurping – that the tiger prawns, too, were extremely good. Next up were our mains – we both selected the Fisherman’s Feast – steamed mussels in garlic and parsley, roasted whole tiger prawns, breaded scampi and crispy squid. All of this came served with skinny fries, dressed baby mesclun salad and garlic aioli. Again, neither of us was disappointed; the calamari was crispy, the scampi succulent and the tiger prawns tasty. I did begin to struggle on my second portion of mussels, at least until my partner reminded me of her warning that I could not eat two portions, at which point my stomach felt miraculously emptier, allowing me to power through. For desert, the affogato – fresh espresso poured over homemade ice cream – was exactly what was needed. We ended our meal in a relaxed fashion, finishing our drinks on the outside terrace whilst listening to the sea crash against the nearby rocks, telling awful jokes about the new seafood diet we would go on.

Every so often, we dine undercover at a different restaurant, tasting the menu and putting the team through their paces in search of the finest eateries, freshest produce and best service. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Look out for our ‘Tried and Tasted’ seal of approval.

G OURMET We catch up with all the latest news from some of our favourite chefs, eateries, hotels and pubs!

Brittany welcomes Professional Cookery students for work experience

Professional Cookery students from Truro and Penwith College recently gained valuable work experience, sampling the culinary delights of a week-long trip to Brittany. The trip, arranged by EBP Cornwall and financed by rasmus , an programme that funds opportunities for students to gain experience abroad, offered students an unforgettable week in a region of France that’s famous for its seafood, crépes and farming of fresh vegetables. isits to local fish and vegetable markets helped the students understand the importance of sourcing sustainable, local ingredients, and an unforgettable meal at Michelin Star restaurant Allium in the town of Quimper allowed them to experience cuisine of the highest quality. There was plenty of hard work to be done, however, as the students spent time working alongside top chefs in both bakery and patisserie kitchens, as well as during lunch services at a French college. DISCOVER MORE Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, Liverty and the Outset Foundation, Outset Cornwall provides a flexible programme of business start-up support, helping individuals explore their business idea through information sessions, specialist workshops and one-to-one coaching.

WIN! Perfect for picnics, for the chance to win a Mossel & Croust luxury hamper of Cornish produce worth £50, turn to page 65.

e all know that feeling of needing a little something to quell hunger between meals. Keen to come up with savoury alternatives to the usual sugary treats, husband and wife Richard and Julie Robinson recently launched a range of vegetable-based cracker biscuits through their new business, Mossel & Croust. Taken from the Cornish words ‘mossel’ and ‘croust’ used originally by Cornish tin miners to describe their mid-morning snack time, the Robinson’s biscuits are gluten free, suitable for vegans and suited to a raw food diet. The Robinsons came up with the idea to make a light, tasty and nutritious biscuit that could be eaten on its own or with cheese or a slice of apple while they were out walking the Cornish coast path. Following several months of research and experimentation with a variety of recipes, the couple hit upon their celery, tomato and chilli vegetable cracker biscuit, which they launched at Trevenna Cross Christmas Market last December to great success. “We were bowled over by the response we received,” said Richard. “The crackers were clearly extremely popular, selling out every weekend.”

Cornish by name and inspired by nature, a new healthy snack company is so much more than it’s cracked up to be.

It was here that Richard and Julie met Outset Cornwall business advisor, Pam Sekula who introduced them to the range of business start-up support offered by the fully funded programme. “The support we’ve received from Outset has been invaluable,” Julie shared. “We are currently developing our business plan and are extremely grateful for the support and opportunities we’ve been given.” Following their initial success, the couple are planning to invest further as full-time work commitments will allow. They are aiming to be as environmentally aware as possible. Ingredients are sourced locally (Riviera Produce), and the containers are re-useable as plant pots or food containers. With a presence at St Ives and Helston Farmers’ markets, a second flavour (cauliflower, lime and ginger) now launched and further recipes being developed, Mossel & Croust could well be the picnic provider of choice this summer.

A FLYING VISIT ABOVE é Relax and unwind in ultimate comfort INSET ì The stretch of golden sands towards Godrevy Lighthouse at Gwithian

W

hen her friend announced a flying visit to Cornwall, demanding to see the best bit’, Hannah knew exactly where to go. The decision to stay at withian Towans, with its mixture of traditional chalets and contemporary beach houses, on the western side of St Ives bay, was not a di cult one. withian is a fabulously long and very family friendly stretch of golden sand, with plentiful rock pools, great surf and lifeguards, all backed by miles of wild sand dunes. We started our mini-adventure with a fortifying breakfast at Sunset Surf Café, a laid back beach café and bar at the heart of the withian Towans, next door to our beachside bolthole. I’d heard great things about the eggs Florentine there and they didn’t disappoint. The lunch menu looked fantastic, too When we finished, Annabelle the owner recommended that we head to odrevy headland to see the seals at Mutton Cove, so off we went An easy walk took the pair along withian beach, over the locally named Red River’ and around the gorgeous odrevy headland. From here, you can see the iconic octagonal lighthouse, which was built in 1 following the tragic wreck of the steamer

Nile during a bad storm. As we made our way along the headland, with sun sparkling on the sea and no more than a brisk breeze, it was di cult to imagine such a storm. Mutton Cove, ust east of the headland, is inaccessible and thus the perfect home to scores of seals, and we weren’t disappointed Some were basking in the spring sunshine, others in the sea, and some we didn’t even know were there, at least until they moved and we realised they weren’t rocks. As you can imagine, it was quite a sight for my city dwelling companion After such a beautiful day spent on the north coast, it was clear that Hannah’s friend would be returning, and next time for more than ust a fleeting visit. We headed back to Annabelle’s café and quickly booked ourselves in for a spot of summer surfing, something we’re both looking forward to. ou can try more extreme sports here too, like stand-up paddle boarding and kitesurfing. Maybe next time

INVEST IN YOUR

e l y t s life We take a look at the advantages of investing in a Peter Bull holiday lodge over a more traditional holiday home.

I

f you’re looking at property in Cornwall, it may well be worth considering a luxury holiday lodge as an alternative to buying a house or apartment. Luxury lodges are a long way from the caravan holidays that we all remember, now presenting a stylish, affordable solution to holiday home ownership in a county where real estate prices are high. We speak to Peter Bull Resorts about the many advantages of buying a lodge.

Firstly, although buying a holiday lodge is definitely a considered purchase, it’s much more simple and stress free than acquiring a house, and there are considerably less additional costs! The purchase is managed by the holiday park of your choice, and there’s no need to use a solicitor. You also don’t need to pay stamp fees or council tax, something local councils are keen to enforce with other second home types.

90 | CORNWALL LIVING

CL--72--ED--Peter Bull Resorts--2.00.indd 2

11/04/2018 09:58

| LIFESTYLE

There are also some very competitive finance packages available, enabling you to pay for your purchase through easy monthly payments that suit your income and household budget. You’ll be asked to pay a minimum 10% deposit, after which finance packages are available with a very competitive rate – at a maximum, 8.2%APR. Your chosen holiday park will be able to talk you through all of your finance options and can check your eligibility as part of a park tour. Ultimately, buying a holiday lodge is an investment in your lifestyle, and holiday lodges offer a level of comfort and finish that would be di cult to secure for a similar price in other holiday properties. What’s more, all lodges are ready to move straight into and have a beautiful level of décor and a high-quality finish, so you’ll have no need to purchase furniture or consider decorating before you can fully enjoy your new lifestyle. You can enjoy residential grade insulation and double glazing, fully integrated, top-spec appliances and desirable features including walk-in wardrobes, utility rooms, en-suite facilities, kitchen islands, larders, even Bluetooth sound systems! Being as affordable to run as they are extremely e cient, lodge owners benefit from low running costs, as well as avoiding monthly bills like council tax. It’s usually possible for you to sublet your lodge too, which can help towards on going costs. In fact, holiday lodges can attract upwards of £1,300 a week during the main season, which translates to a good additional income! Again, investing in your lifestyle means placing yourself in the best locations for maximising your time spent in the Duchy and with Peter Bull Resorts, it’s possible to secure the best postcodes in the county at a fraction

of the usual holiday home price. Peter Bull has three resorts to choose from, each situated in a beautiful rural location and within a mile of the coast, while being conveniently close to key local towns. Ownership at Peter Bull also affords you the benefit of additional on-site facilities, additions that would add considerable expense when investing in a traditional property. Enjoy an outdoor area with your very own decking, and take advantage of facilities like swimming pools, spas and on-site restaurants. This means that whatever stage you’re at, whether you’re looking to retire and want your own slice of Cornwall in which to enjoy your golden years, or have children who need keeping busy during your stay, a lodge with Peter Bull Resorts could well be the lock-up-and-leave answer you’ve been looking for when it comes to staying in Cornwall.

BEST IN SHOW Renowned for its offering of entertainment, it’s well worth making time to visit the three-day Royal Cornwall Show.

T

aking place on Thursday 7th, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th June, the focal point of the show, as always, is the large main ring, where you’ll find headline acts ranging from the fast and furious, to the majestic and skilful. First up this year is Cavalry of Heroes – World War 1 Horses and Heroes. To mark the 100-year anniversary of the First World War, Cavalry of Heroes will make their Royal Cornwall Show debut with a limited-edition performance commemorating the role that the valiant horses and soldiers played during The reat War. Poignant and dignified, the professional riders will combine tricks and stunts on horseback to a fantastic musical score, rousing a sing-along before a final cavalry charge. Next is the Kangaroo Kid. Direct from Australia’s Gold Coast, the fearless Matt Coulter makes a welcome return with his fast-paced, stunt-filled quad bike act. If it’s in his way, be it a car, tractor or truck, daredevil Matt will jump it, and this year, there may even be a chance for some lucky members of the crowd to take part. A typically dry Australian sense of humour ensures that Matt’s commentary is twice as hilarious, so it’s one not to be missed! The Royal Cornwall Show would not be complete without a flyover by the RAF

Falcons and a colourful aerial display from the UK’s premier parachute team. Visible from across the showground as they descend from the sky, the team creates a breathtaking spectacle which culminates in a pinpoint-accurate landing in the main ring! The Devon and Cornwall Police Dogs Display team will also be there, showing off their skills as well as how the canine and human policing partnerships protect the public. The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, based in HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, will also be present, displaying pomp and ceremony in true military fashion. Onlookers can expect rousing tunes and synchronised marching when this fine band performs on Thursday, and again on Saturday! There will also be the usual parades of prize winning livestock, edge-of-the-seat show jumping classes, hound parades, and the thrilling inter-hunt relay – a horseback team race that never fails to excite – all jam packed into the main ring’s programme. What more could you want?

YOUR FUTURE Speaking with Stephens Scown and its recent client Lucy Habberfield, we learn how farm inheritance law could help more people.

A

farmer who was awarded over £1 million in compensation following a High Court case over the inheritance of her family farm wants more farmers to know about the area of law that helped her. ucy Habberfield, who was advised by the inheritance and trust disputes team at Stephens Scown P, received the substantial award in recognition of the work that she had carried out at the family farm over a period of 30 years. avina Haydon, partner in the inheritance and trust disputes team at Stephens Scown in St Austell explains: “My colleague Phil Gregory led a RIGHT dedicated team who worked on this case. The area Davina Haydon, partner in the of law involved is called Proprietary Estoppel. It is a inheritance and developing area, with a series of high profile cases, trust disputes team particularly relating to farms, over recent years. at Stephens It’s been a di cult few years for ucy Habberfield, Scown, offers advice on disputes who tells us: “I worked hard on the farm for so long arising from Wills and following my father’s drop in health, my siblings, and inheritance with the help of my mother, made it impossible to stay on the farm. To start with, I didn’t know I could do anything about the situation – I think a lot of people in farming are unaware of this law and how it could help them. Once I realised there was something I could do, I knew I had to try for my children’s sake, to give them a secure future. avina Haydon explains: “In Lucy’s case she had worked for 30 years, seven days a week for low wages on the family farm on the understanding that she would one day take it over from her father. The judge found that she had kept her side of the bargain. To compensate her for the detriment that she’d suffered over the years, she was awarded over £1 million – a sum equivalent to the value of the dairy part of the family farm, which she ran with her partner. As well as being a partner in the Stephens Scown inheritance and trust disputes team, avina is a member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists, the ’s leading body for lawyers specialising in wills, inheritance and probate. The team at Stephens Scown has been awarded top tier ranking by independent guides to the legal profession Chambers and egal .

SIT BACK AND RELAX

It’s time to get an educated opinion from the experts at OC Spas and discover their top tips for buying your own luxury spa.

H

aving just won Spa Retailer of the Year and Gold Standard in the National UK Pool and Spa Awards, husband and wife team Jonny and Lucy Bottrell are making waves in the world of luxury spas. Featuring at the Royal Cornwall Show this year, OC Spas will talk you through the process of buying your own luxury spa over a cold drink and help you find the perfect fit for you. Lucy tells us: “it’s hard not to be cajoled into spontaneously buying a hot tub but that may not be the best move.” Lucy explains that for OC Spas it’s essential that their customers are able to make an informed decision when buying a hot tub. For her, the importance lies in the fact that their customers are able to see and test a hot tub as part of the buying process, which means that there are no hidden costs or surprises. When talking about durability, it’s important to bear in mind that no matter what, it’s likely that your hot tub will eventually receive some wear and tear. Therefore, it’s also important to consider how it’ll be maintained. OC Spas takes the sting out of the process by offering a specialist installation and aftercare package, meaning that the team will continue to give you an amazing service even after your hot tub is installed.

Lucy continues to explain that: “our aim is to use the Royal Cornwall Show as a platform to advise new clients and encourage them to take the time to make the right choice.” It would be easy to pitch a great deal at the show and encourage customers to buy there and then, but OC Spas recognises that buying a spa is more of a long-term commitment to a product that will keep on giving, granted that it’s well looked after. That’s why the OC Spas team encourage their clients to put their tubs to the test and try them out for themselves. A visit to their chic showroom, which is fully equipped with warm changing rooms, towels and fluffy robes, gives a purchasing experience that’s a great deal more enjoyable than a snap decision at a showground!

Baker Tom’s Bread will be returning to the Royal Cornwall Show this year, bigger and better than ever before!

his year, in addition to its busy stand in the Food & Farming Pavilion, Baker Tom’s will also be hosting a lively masterclass tent at the show. This will be buzzing with baking classes with Tom and his team, as well as live music, family fun, competitions and, of course, lots of different treats to try. Tom delivered his first loaf of handcrafted bread to his local farm shop more than ten years ago, and today Baker Tom’s has four shops and cafés of its own and a successful wholesale business. True to the day he started, Tom’s ethos remains the same – to

make delicious, wholesome, artisanal bread and sweet treats that his customers love. One of Tom’s much-loved Cornish treats – which will be demonstrated at the show – is the humble scone; deliciously soft and fluffy and served with lashings of butter, or classic clotted cream and jam.

www.bakertom.co.uk

BAKER TOM’S CLASSIC SCONE METHOD 1

Preheat your oven to 150°C and line a large baking tray with non-stick baking parchment or a silicone mat

2

Sift the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder into a bowl. Cut the butter into small cubes and add to the flour. Rub the mixture together with your hands

3

Lightly beat the eggs, adding in the cold milk. Pour all of the egg mixture into the flour, mixing quickly and lightly together. The trick is not to over-mix the quicker and lighter you are, the better the scones will be

4

Tip the dough out into a lightly floured surface and roll out to a thickness of 2.5cm. With a 4cm cutter, cut the scones out, placing them about 5cm apart on your baking tray

5

Lightly beat the egg yolk with the milk for the glaze. Brush over the top of the scones then finish with a sprinkling of caster sugar. Bake in the centre of the oven for around 20 to 25 minutes, or until risen and slightly browned, then leave to cool on a wire rack.

his summer Trebah Garden and Gaggle Haus present the epic Persian tale SCRAWW, told via an immersive soundtrack written by international sound designer and composer Max Pappenheim. Audiences will don ‘silent disco’-style headphones, oin the feathered flock and be led through the garden, experiencing live performance blended with Max’s musical creations. Paths and plots twist as the flock move through this truly immersive soundscape before reaching the finale on Trebah’s picturesque private beach. This is a family friendly promenade performance that can be enjoyed by anyone aged three and above. Trebah’s amphitheatre also has lots of fun family shows this season, including Illyria’s Dr Dolittle, Quantum’s The Reluctant Dragon and The Pirates of Trebah from Gweek Players. Arbor will also be paying the garden a visit on 29th May for a one-off

walking performance aimed specifically at families. Part man, part tree, Arbor is a gigantic 18-feet tall puppet created by the brilliant Smoking Apples. Spaces are limited for this show and can be booked by calling Trebah direct on 01326 252200. The cost of the performance is included in normal garden entry and is free for Trebah members. Other daytime performances include the incredible Craig from Squashbox this year performing The Sea Show on 27th July and Myths and Monsters on 25th August. No booking necessary, just pop along to the amphitheatre on the day. It’s time to get booking your family’s summer fun at Trebah now!

"

To make history you need to be brave, bold and believe in yourself, just like the women in this book KATE PANKHURST

"

In celebration of 100 years since the Representation of the People Act, giving women the vote, we take a look at just some of the astounding women who have shaped the world we live in. WORDS BY

Megan Searle

FANTASTICALLY GREAT WOMEN WHO MADE HISTORY

By Kate Pankhurst

Fantastically Great Women Who Made History is the eagerly awaited follow up to Kate Pankhurst’s hugely successful, Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World. Taking us back even further through time, this vibrant and beautifully illustrated book is a celebration of extraordinary women from around the world who made history with their astonishing bravery, outspokenness and ideas.

We explore the stories, accomplishments and adventures of women including Harriet Tubman, conductor of the ‘Underground Railroad’, leading runaway slaves to freedom, Qiu Jin, an inspirational women, shaking off harsh Chinese traditions that held women back and Josephine Baker, a dazzling dancer using fame to make a stand against racism. You can march proudly with courageous suffragette, survivor and peacemaker Flora Drummond, who fought for fairer rights for working women, blast into space and reach for the stars with Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, create waves with Islamic queen of the pirates, Sayyida al-Hurra and make your voice heard with women’s rights champion Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter, literary talent Mary Shelley.

Flora Drummond

Harriet Tubman

These women all lived in times when women weren’t expected to have big ideas, be in charge or have exciting ambitions, but that didn’t stop them. Prepare to be inspired.

GIVE IT A TRI! W Mike George from Triathlon Store, Hayle offers a few pointers for those thinking about entering their first triathlon.

ith the Beast from the East hopefully well behind us and the onset of lighter evenings, many people are getting off the sofa and cranking up their training for the Cornish triathlon season ahead. “Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports, with many people challenging themselves to compete in their first event, Mike George, Triathlon Store founder explains, and with three different elements to prepare for, training is far from boring. So what are the basics for kitting yourself out, ready for the starting line Mike tells us: “As the majority of triathlons in Cornwall are pool based, a swimming costume, road worthy bike and a pair of decent running shoes is enough to get you started. However, you will find that specialist equipment can make a huge difference when it comes to your personal enjoyment, not only on the day but throughout your training. He points us to a Trisuit, one of the first things a new triathlete should consider investing in. Not only is it great for swimming, it has a small pad sewn in which helps with comfort during the cycling element of an event, and which doesn’t get in the way whilst running. “A Trisuit makes the transition between the three elements quicker and will make the event itself so much more comfortable. Mike also recommends adding aero bars, transition bags, swimming wetsuits

and race belts to your locker. Fortunately, Triathlon Store, Hayle has everything you could possibly need to make your training and the event itself as enjoyable as possible. ou’ll find a fantastic range of running and cycling kit, a huge choice of open water swimming wetsuits, as well as all the leading triathlon gear from top triathlon brands including Orca, Zone3, Huub, BlueSeventy, to name but a few! The team of friendly staff is always on hand, happy to advise and spend time discussing your needs, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out; even if you’re trying to decide whether or not triathlon is for you, they can help you make an informed decision. The store is also actively involved in sponsoring Bys Vyken Events and the INTOTRI Cornish Tri and Mini Tri series with seven locations hosting events throughout Cornwall this year, giving the team first-hand experience to help point you in the right direction. So, if you’re looking for a new, exciting way to get active during the spring and summer ahead, why not pay a visit to Triathlon Store and see if this exciting sport is for you

ate St Ives will be celebrating the acclaimed British artist Patrick Heron (1920 to 1999) this summer. This retrospective will be the first major show of his work for 20 years. One of the most significant and innovative figures in 20th Century British art, Heron played a major role in the development of post-war abstract art.

It runs from 19th May to 30th September 2018. This exhibition – spanning over 50 years of work from 1943 to 1996 – brings together 45 colour-saturated paintings, including rarely seen works from public and private collections around the world. It is a rare opportunity to experience the scope and ambitious scale of Heron’s painting.

by Patrick Heron but made by you. The Tate’s Super Sunday on 1st July is aimed at families to join in and take over the galleries with a host of activities. Experiment in the ‘Colour Lab’ and mix up your own crazy colourful creations. Play with projections, explore the galleries with your own puppet person and then join the team on the beach for some outdoor art. There is also the opportunity to find out more behind the artwork in the series St Ives Stories. In July take a closer look at the life and work of artist Patrick Heron with his former personal assistant Janet Axten. You can explore the history of modern art in St Ives in the dedicated rooms, giving key artists a permanent presence in the town where they lived and worked. The display follows those artists across the 20th Century, revealing their relationships to international art histories. From the unique perspective of St Ives, visitors will be able to bridge geographical and chronological boundaries and discover new connections through familiar artists.

Heron’s abstraction is a direct response to the light, colour and shape that he encountered every day. An art of pure visual sensation, his paintings are the result of his experience of looking acutely at the world and though they do not represent the garden and landscape surrounding his home and studio in Cornwall, those forms resonate in his painting in fundamental ways. The exhibition in the new top-lit gallery at Tate St Ives is the first opportunity to bring together a group of these large-scale expansive works to Cornwall, and reveal the full evolution of his vibrant abstract language. It will unlock new insights into his art and encourage all visitors to enjoy the simple and joyous act of looking. Rather than a conventional retrospective, with a chronological display, this show is a succession of spaces and juxtapositions across the full breadth of his career to encourage a new understanding of his achievement as an artist and the creative processes he followed. Born in Leeds, Heron spent his early childhood in Cornwall. The family left after five years, but Heron returned, first in 1 to 1945 when he came to work for Bernard Leach at the Leach Pottery in St Ives. Whilst he was there, he met many leading of the modernist artists associated with St Ives, including Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. He then spent each summer there until 1956, when he moved permanently to Zennor, west Cornwall. He was foremost a painter, however during his career, he worked in a variety of media, from the silk scarves he designed from the age of 14, for his father’s company Cresta, to the beautiful stained-glass window at the entrance of Tate St Ives. To accompany this major exhibition, a fantastic range of events and activities will be running over the summer. For families, Tate Create returns during the school holidays. In the summer it will be the Big Paint Challenge and it’s all about colour. Get your paintbrushes ready and help us to transform our Foyle Studio into an exhibition of artworks, inspired

The team at Eat Art have turned framing itself into an artform, and recognise how the right frame can really enhance an artwork, helping to bring it to life and preserve it

From mirrors and prints, through to works on paper and canvas; even for trinkets and ephemera, Emma and the team can guide you through the choices available to best preserve and display your art. We ask Emma how Eat Art was founded. “Mark Opie and I founded Eat Art in 2000, with the help of The Prince’s Trust. I first became aware of picture framing as an art form in itself whilst studying art in school and college, and was particularly inspired by the work of Gustav Klimt and Hans Peller. “Mark’s background is in woodworking and his interest in picture framing was sparked by the level of craftsmanship involved.” Since starting the company, the two have been joined by other likeminded individuals with similar creative and practical backgrounds. Now they enjoy a reputation as one of the best picture framers in the south west, working with clients throughout the UK, including many leading local artists and galleries. “We have access to all of the major framing suppliers and facilities to mill some profiles in-house. In this way, we can offer an extensive range of mouldings in pre-finished, raw wood and metal profiles, plus customised mouldings in timber or acrylic.” There is, however, no need to confine your choices to pre-finished frames. mma continues: “We can apply our imagination and skill to create unique finishes that include hand-painted designs, gesso work and gilding.” So, it seems, there isn’t a lot the Eat Art team can’t do to suit your framing needs. For us, the most impressive part is how the team aims to actively preserve your artwork, championing conservation in much of what they do. Mark tells us: “A successful frame should show an item to its best, but framing can

also protect and help to actively preserve. This consideration is crucial if the item to be framed is of worth, be that in terms of money or sentiment. At Eat Art we can advise on the most appropriate materials and best methods to conserve your work.” So, whether you’ve inherited an heirloom that’s been in your family for generations, or you recently came across a piece that you saw and simply had to purchase, be sure to get in touch with the team at Eat Art, who can help ensure it lasts for generations to come, fitting a frame that suits both you and the work itself, as well as protecting it from unnecessary damage. If you’d like to pay Emma and Mark a visit, the studio is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, and on other days by appointment.

Keep your eyes healthy and in vogue with a visit to Alexander Miller Opticians in Falmouth.

E

stablished more than a decade ago as Falmouth’s only independent optician, Alexander Miller always guarantees that all-important personal touch. Owners Mark and Andrew regularly attend trade fairs in London, Paris and Milan, allowing them to obtain an oversight of what’s happening in the optical market. This also gives them direct access to a range of companies whose products are often not otherwise seen in Cornwall! Indeed, a large proportion of existing Alexander Miller customers come back time and time again because they appreciate the eclectic and ever-evolving selection of spectacles that are always available, often finding quite a selection of frames that suit them – several of which they would never before have considered. Mark Alexander, co-founder of the practice, tells us: “As independent opticians we are not restricted to what products we can offer. This is particularly useful when recommending lenses as we can offer the most appropriate solution for you, from whichever manufacturer that might be. We do, however, have a strong a liation with Nikon, with whom we’ve been doing business since day one.”

All this leads to the practice’s ethos: that whilst ocular health is crucial and technical specifications important, they needn’t come at the expense of design. Some of the exciting brands you’ll find available are Tom Ford, Tom Davies, ic!berlin, MODO and WOOW. You can choose with the environment in mind, thanks to the ECO brand – frames made from recycled material. ECO start at a complete price single vision of £150 and they’ll plant a tree for every frame sold! So, if it’s about time you checked on your eyesight, what better place to do it than here? Sit down to enjoy a fresh coffee as you prepare for your appointment by enjoying the beautiful views of the river Fal. A comprehensive 30-minute eye examination awaits you followed by an opportunity to discuss your visual needs. Throughout your visit you’ll be given time to make the whole journey an enjoyable one. There really is no excuse not to look after your eyes!

MENOPAUSE: DON’T SUFFER IN SILENCE Despite the fact that 51% of the population will go through it at some point in their lives, any mention of menopause can often be met with embarrassment and silence.

M é ABOVE Dr Sarah Gray

enopause can be a miserable time, but this needn’t be the case, says private GP and women’s health specialist at Duchy Hospital, Sarah Gray. “Part of the confusion may be because symptoms can creep up very slowly, when you are still having periods. For some, the transition period lasts just a few years, but for others it can last a decade. Every woman’s experience is different and there is no definitive test to predict precisely where you’re at, or how long you’re going to be there.” Technically, Dr Gray explains: “Menopause is the time of the very last period. In the months or years leading up to this point, women’s hormones often swing between extremes, which can lead to a variety of fluctuating symptoms. When bleeding stops it means that the female hormones are lower. What makes each woman’s experience different is how her body responds.” Symptoms of menopause can include sleep disturbance, mood changes, di culty concentrating and making decisions, vaginal dryness and sexual di culty, bladder symptoms, joint pains and changes in the skin. Of course, the symptom usually associated with it is hot flushes. Around three out of four women experience these, so they don’t affect everyone. If flushing is not a big issue, women may not even realise what is happening. “All women will experience changes in their skin, bladder, bones and blood vessels. If menopause is early, then the changes start early. In relation to bones, this leads to an increased risk of fracture during elderly

years, so younger women are encouraged to consider hormone replacement at least until the average age of menopause, to reduce risk of osteoporosis, heart disease and dementia, even if symptoms aren’t greatly troublesome.” r Sarah ray has worked in the field for more than 30 years. During a consultation, she can explain why this happens and how you can make it easier to live with, as well as what you can buy from the pharmacy and how well it works, and what your GP can prescribe. Most importantly, she can explain some of the myths and misunderstandings surrounding Hormone Replacement Treatment. “Hormone replacement is a term that covers a multitude of options. A woman deserves accurate and up to date information in order to decide whether it’s appropriate for her. Many women can manage without HRT, particularly if they understand what is happening to their bodies. “If a woman wants to try HRT, details of her health profile, previous exposure to hormones and preferences should be considered. Ultimately, her decision to use or continue to use treatment should be informed and agreed upon, benefitting quality of life without adding unnecessary risk, and it should be reviewed annually.”

PROTECTING

e r u t u f r you A staggering one in ten of us will face a period of sickness absence of more than six months during our working lives. We talk to Harris Begley Financial about what you can do to plan for such an event.

W

hilst you may have life cover in place, the question arises of how would you, or your the family, cope if a wage earner was off work for a long period of time? Source emos survey, April 2 1 . One route is to take out an Income Protection policy. This product is designed to pay out a tax-free* monthly sum in the event that you are unable to work due to illness or in ury. In general, it will pay out until you are either well enough to return to work, have retired, the policy ends, or upon your death whichever happens first. nder current legislation, tax year 2 17 1 ach policy will have different conditions, such as cover choices against not being able to work in your own occupation, or any occupation, and you would obviously need to disclose any pre-existing medical issues. Initially its useful to establish if you would only receive the Statutory Sick Pay of . a week in the 2 17 1 tax year paid for up to 2 weeks, if you qualify , or if there are additional benefits from your employer or the state. Once you’ve got an idea of this income stream, you can then decide when you’d like your income

protection cover to kick-in (called the deferred period). The longer you wait the cheaper the premium will be. It pays to be sensible about how much you require until you’re able to return to work (or have retired). In the same way you wouldn’t need a pay out commensurate with buying a new house if the kitchen floods, your potential pay out via an income protection policy should be calculated in a similar way (up to a maximum amount . And again, the less you need, the lower the premium. The sobering fact is that each year, a million people in the UK suffer a prolonged absence from work due to sickness, and up to half of those would find their savings have run out after ust a few weeks So, it makes sense to plan accordingly by contacting Harris Begley now for a free initial financial health check. Source The Chartered Insurance Institute, 2016 report).

You may also require advice on the legal and tax issues. HM Revenue & Customs practice and the law relating to taxation are complex and subject to individual circumstances and changes which cannot be foreseen. The value of pensions and investments can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. Income Protection is a complex product, with a vast array of options, so it is essential that you take advice. As with all insurance policies, terms, conditions and exclusions will apply.

CHARITY |

BEATING THE

ODDS

We learn about Skylar, a programme that’s doing exceptional work to help parents with infants born into complex and often chaotic home environments.

B

ack in issue 70, we met the team at Trelya, an award-winning charity helping Cornwall’s most disadvantaged families and children. Trelya’s mission is simple: to break the generational cycle of social and economic deprivation, allowing children, young people and families to develop skills, knowledge, awareness, motivation and aspirations necessary to build safe, positive and fulfilling futures. We were recently introduced to Skylar, a ground-breaking programme from Trelya that’s aimed at supporting babies and young children up to four years old who are born into complex, chaotic family environments. Around 26% of babies in the UK are estimated to be living within complex family situations, exposed to substance abuse, mental illness, or domestic violence. Skylar’s programme assists young parents and their babies in overcoming the negative impacts of such circumstances. Studies have shown that the earliest experiences shape a baby’s brain development, having a lifelong impact on their mental and emotional health. They’ve also proven that the crucial time for a baby’s healthy development is the 1001 days from pregnancy to the age of two years. What’s more, when a baby’s development falls behind the norm during the first year of life, they’re much more likely to continue falling behind in subsequent years. Trelya’s family team has built a high level of trust in the community over the past 15 years, enabling them to reach out and help mums who are often unable to access, or are intimidated by mainstream support services. Skylar delivers a solid framework in a flexible and innovative way that responds to children as individuals. It nurtures them through the critical early years, giving them the care and support they need to develop and thrive.

A part of this is providing a programme of musical experiences, partially supported by the National Foundation for Youth Music. Evidence has shown a positive impact of early years music programmes on children’s cognitive and physical development, language and communication, as well as social and emotional skills. Cat Keene, Director of Programmes and Operations at Trelya tells us: “Having been here for 15 years, we understand the complexities that the children and their families are facing. We’re a generation in now. The girls are now having their own babies and we feel like having access to those children is a real chance to fracture that cycle of deprivation.” Treasurer Antony Penhaul adds to this, saying: “Our programmes, including Skylar, are free to the end user, but we can only continue to do that with the support of the local community.”
