As our loved ones get older their needs change. Day to day life can become more challenging, and you may think that it would be impossible for them to stay in their own home and still have the care and support that they need. However, live-in companionship care can be a realistic alternative to a care home and there are any benefits to aving a are wor er living with your family member. It means they can stay in their own home – in the environment they love, doing the things they enjoy. We hear from Bluebird Care Operations Manager, Caroline, who tells us: “A live in carer is a companion, whether it’s sharing meals, watching TV or enjoying days out. Family and friends can still visit as usual, but feel reassured their loved one is safe and comfortable.” For more information call 01872 302600 or visit www.shelterbox.org

Fabulous fabric solutions from
Lilly Lewarne pulls off architectural masterclass
Merchants and Makers
Catching up with Merchants and Makers partner Penny McMillan earlier this month, we learned that a lot of her clients of late have shown great interest in artisanal, hand-printed fabrics, choosing to experience the ‘hand-crafted in Britain’ look over the mass produced, a trend we discovered in this month’s cover feature. She also told us that a lot more people are making the most of automated Roman blinds, which now come with remote control. “Aesthetically these look much ni er as you an fit t e blin s u ore
precisely, without needing to provide space to reach for the cord.” One couple who recently enlisted Penny’s help had this to say about their new blinds: “They’re amazing. If people haven’t tried them, they should. It’s so easy – a press of a button and your blinds will close, great after a hard day at work. It’s affordable luxury!” For more information call 01566 785763 or visit www.merchantsandmakers.co.uk

With 25 years’ experience in the south west, Lilly Lewarne Architects pride themselves not only on local knowledge and a strong reputation for excellent architecture, but also on their ability to provide an engaging and cost-effective design service. One such example of the team’s expertise is Salt House in St Ives. Now a part of the luxurious Carbis Bay Holidays portfolio, this property was brought to life after an original scheme submitted by another architect was refused planning permission. Lilly Lewarne Arthitects were commissioned to redesign the proposals and negotiate a successful outcome with the local planning authority. And that they did! The main body of the existing three-storey house was preserved, but the inclusion of balcony extensions, internal remodeling and the replacement roof accommodation meant that a complete aesthetic overhaul was achieved, providing high quality and contemporary accommodation. In other words, a job well done! For more information call 01872 261000 or visit www.lillylewarne.co.uk

WORDS BY
DAN WARDEN
I
t’s that time of year again; the clocks have gone back, the nights are drawing in and we’re facing the prospect of spending much more time indoors than we did at the balmy heights of summer. It’s the time when many of us start looking to make those much-needed home improvements, not just to fill the time when the weather’s raging outside, but to make spending time at home a genuine pleasure. After all, nothing beats coming home and seeing all your hard work has paid off, but where to start? For some, a new kitchen is the order of the year, having put it off for too long. For others, redecorating the living room or updating a tired bathroom is top of the list. No matter the project, just settling on a design scheme that works can be enough to make even the most enthusiastic home improver put it off for another year. This is why we’ve spoken to some of Cornwall’s top interior designers and homeware brands, to get an insight into their forecasts and top tips for interior design trends in . So go on, light the fire, make yourself a brew and get the inspiration you need to get your home project off the ground. We’ll begin in the heart of the home with Arnold’s Kitchens. Company owners Leigh and Arnold tell us: “From our perspective, the trends for kitchens and interiors will stay with the raw material look; a natural, textural feel.” n Interiora
n Arnold's Kitchens
However, they also predict that pattern will begin to feature more, replacing block colours and adding interest. What’s more, clay and earthy materials, along with handcrafted pieces will also feature more prominently. Leigh continues: “I envisage darker worktops featuring strongly in 2019, moving away from paler toned tops, and I’m also looking forward to using steel, iron and glass within our next projects.” www.arnoldskitchens.co.uk Similarly to Arnold’s Kitchens, Director and Interior Designer at Interiora, Megan Dack, rea rms that patterned porcelain tiles will be a popular choice, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms. The use of patterned splashbacks will really help those who are updating their kitchens to make a statement, and the porcelain tiles in particular present a stylish and stunning alternative that’s both durable and on trend. They can also be used for floors, making them all the more versatile! www.interiora.co.uk

What’s interesting about interior design, especially in as diverse a county as Cornwall, is how different companies and designers each have their own perspective on what we can expect. For instance, compared to Arnold’s Kitchens and Interiora, who both forecast the use of patterns, Isabel at Coastal Scandi suggests that darker kitchen cabinetry, with dark blues and blacks in particular, will prove a popular choice. Anybody who’s had the pleasure of appreciating the minimalist charm of a Scandinavian interior will no doubt agree that it’s a style that’s here to stay, but just like the world of design itself, it is constantly evolving. Isabel tells us: “Next year, think Scandi Noir for a chic and minimal modern space that is tough, practical and super-stylish.” She also recommends the new and elegant EM77 electric kettle – designed by Eric Magnussen for Danish brand, Stelton, describing it as “this season’s must have iconic kitchen accessory.” www.coastalscandi.com Similarly, Mark Mitchell, owner of Stylehome, tells us: “Scandinavian style remains incredibly popular and seems to fit particularly well in Cornwall. Manufacturers like Umage take the story of Scandinavian design further than ever before, combining aesthetics, simplicity and functionality with thoughtful craftsmanship and environmental care.” A range of Umage homewares can be found in store at Stylehome, including furniture and lighting, all flat-packed in stylish boxes that help optimise global logistics, reducing storage and transportation costs, thus making them more accessible and affordable. www.stylehome.co.uk

Next we turn to the advice of Ali Cary from The Cotton Mills in Truro who tells us that “mellow and dusky pastel hues are set to replace the cool greys in our neutral colour schemes”. These tones transform the narrative of simplicity from the industrial to the natural. From hand-drawn designs and textured weaves to soft shades of driftwood, blush and lichen, Sanderson’s ‘Port Isaac’ range brings the outside in, giving an image of serenity in an increasingly hectic world. www.cotton-mills.co.uk This brings us to another theme that seems to be emerging for the year ahead, which is embracing more earthy tones and, as Ali suggests, bringing the outside in. Indeed, greens seem to be prominent in many online trend forecasts, although we’ve learned already that Cornwall tends to do things differently. One thing that does seem to be translating into the Cornish interior scene is the idea of sustainability and reducing our environmental impact. The plastic straw revolution, for instance, has taken the UK by storm and has highlighted just how much difference a small change can make. Thinking along this thread, we catch up with Julian Foye’s in-house design specialist, Sarah, who also suggests that ‘Scandi Noir’ will be a popular look moving into the New Year. What’s more, we’re told: “Natural sustainable products will feature more as we become even more conscious of our impact on the Earth. Wood dining furniture comes to life with the addition of vivid green plants; they breathe life into our space and,” you guessed it, “bring the outside in.” In terms of colour, Sarah suggests that “dark grey will replace the cooler light grey on our accent walls, offset by warm copper or brass metal features on light fittings, and small occasional furniture pieces. A dramatic but
cosy style for your home can be achieved by the introduction of a deep velvet colour, and we are seeing more choice of velvet fabrics over many of our upholstery ranges coming to the fore, with teal and other blues being the colour to watch in 2019.” www.julianfoye.co.uk So, we’re starting to build a picture here that the key to 2019 is going to be keeping our homes feeling warm. Using more earthy colours, including greens and deeper blues, as well as indoor plants, we’re being encouraged to bring the outdoors in, to create a healthy and balanced style of living. Dani eck from Iroka takes this one step further. Agreeing that house plants will not be going away, and that “Forrest Green” will be one of the year’s main colours, he also foresees gold and burnt orange being popular – a bolder way of adding warmth, as well as just a little bit of flare, to your d cor. She tells us The change in people’s awareness when it comes to sustainable materials and the damage that plastics are doing to the environment will spread to other areas of the house, making people more likely to draw away from using too much plastic, choosing instead more natural, less harmful materials.” Indeed, Dani continues: “This new way of thinking could shape a whole trend, coupled with the ongoing popularity of indoor plants and the mindfulness trend. Colours would be varying greens and a mix of textures with hints of gold. This will inspire people to choose products made closer to home from less conventional materials, reducing their carbon footprint.” She also suggests – and we won’t dwell on this for too long – that British made products and traditional English country house style will become all the more popular in conjunction with Brexit, which is certainly something to bear in mind! www.iroka.co.uk

One recent project undertaken by Elaine and the team was the revamp of popular seaside restaurant, Hooked on the Rocks. They used Inchrya Blue – voted ‘Colour of the Year’ by Homes & Gardens magazine – which really adds a luxury feel to the d cor. “Our new favourite colour though,” Elaine continues, “is De Nimes No.299. This elegant blue feels wonderfully down to earth, so could be used on anything from a kitchen island to an airy drawing room. This shade is inspired by the cloth of everyday workwear made in the French city, Nimes,” and with the onset of winter, it really can help bring warmth to the airier spaces of your home. www.camelliainteriors.co.uk

GOING RUSTIC?
Penny from Merchants and Makers tells us how clients of late have shown a definite interest in artisanal, hand-printed fabrics. Rather than choosing mass-produced designs, Penny notes that they love experiencing the specific, handmade look. “Colour wise, greens are definitely very much there, along with pinks and also a lot of grey, but I think it’s going to be superseded by the greens and blues coming through.” And, similarly to what Dani from Iroka tells us, Penny believes that because of the uncertainty in the wider world, there is a greater demand for items made closer to home. Penny also recommends the installation of automated Roman blind systems, remote controlled and powered by lithium batteries. Turn to page to find out more. www.merchantsandmakers.co.uk If you are looking to dress your windows, Westcountry Blinds specialises in manufacturing blinds that are tailored to fit non-standard windows, perfect for your unique Cornish home. www.westcountryblinds.co.uk We can always rely on Elaine Skinner, founder of Camellia Interiors, to give us a good idea what to expect in the world of interiors, and for 2019 she tells us: “2017 was the year of the pink wall but in 2019, we are seeing more punchy paint colours making their way onto walls. Think emeralds, peacock blues and tonal reds, but basically, any colour other than cream or grey is bang on trend.”

Warren Bennett, owner of flooring specialists, Tre Concepts, tells us: “For coastal and modern homes, we recommend trying light oaks or Douglas fir to bring texture and softness. For more traditional homes, timber brings a sultry sophistication. Try a mix of modern narrow boards in warm enveloping hues then, bring up the sheen so the light and grain can play. Picture smooth scotch whiskey in a cut crystal tumbler and a warm winter fire.” That’s certainly an image we can get on board with! www.treconcepts.co.uk So there it is! Hopefully you’ve found something to inspire the home improver in you, but remember interior design isn’t about following trends. Rather, the trends are there to help inspire you to discover what works best for your home. Start off by creating a mood board, pulling snippets from the web and magazines of styles that you like and ideas that you think will work for you. Soon enough you’ll have a clear picture of what you want to achieve, so you can make a start on updating your home, creating a new look that you’ll love coming home to as the nights start to draw in.

e No pNOanGAIN Thinking of giving your home an exterior facelift this winter? I get the lowdown on the options for replacing your windows from home improvement expert, Phil Dawe.
Y
our windows are very much part of the aesthetic of your home. Not only do they frame your view from the inside, with the advent of modern designs and a range of colours, they also add style and charm to the exterior. The quality o win ows also a e ts t e energy e ien y of your home and can have a huge impact on the temperature and noise inside. With this in mind, and after a couple of winter storms making it very apparent that my 1970s bungalow is certainly in need of some new windows for its soul, I seek advice from Phil Dawe, owner of Dawes and Windows. The company is family-run, with Phil ably supported by his wife and daughter, supplying and installing replacement windows, doors and conservatories into homes across Cornwall. I ask Phil where I should start when considering replacing my win ows e tells e t at t e first ste is or him to come out for an initial, no-obligation chat. “I’m guessing,” says Phil, “that with most bungalows of that era, you’ve got vast panoramic, characterless windows with only small openers?” He’s right, at least half of my living room is glazed and the windows only have small opening panes. “That’s because in the 1980s, when your windows would have been updated, glazing was all about costeffectives. The less openings and panes, the cheaper the price,” explains Phil.

HANNAH TAPPING
It transpires that double-glazing used to be all about a quick sell and volume sales. For Phil and his team this couldn’t be further from the truth. “My initial consultation with a lient is a a t-fin ing eeting all about t e look and style that they are trying to achieve. I sit with them to try and ascertain their priorities – are we going down the ultramodern route? Do you want to have a more original feel? How many openers do you want? How do you want your windows to open? What material do you want to use?” This may seem like a lot of questions, but it makes me breathe an internal sigh of relief. It shows me that Phil and his team have considered all of the options so that I can easily make an informed choice. I quickly realise that by adding more opening panes, opting for the easy maintenance and modern look of PVC windows and choosing one of the great coloured frames now available, I will be able to transform the look of my home. il even t in s o t e finer etail o a ing top-openers to my children’s bedroom windows so that I can vent them on warm summer evenings without worrying about the security risk of a big open window on a groun oor roo Having spent some time living in Europe, where the combination of shutters and inward opening windows are common, I ask about the possibility of having this set up in

We offer a ‘tilt and turn’ option that would be ideal for you, and it makes cleaning them much easier too.” I also learn from Phil that it’s not just aest eti benefits t at o e ro re la ing your old windows – it sounds like I’m going to be spending much less on my heating bills once I upgrade, too! “Sealed units have come on leaps and bounds since the 80s. Your windows are likely to have no energy coatings at all and the two panes will only have air trapped between them,” surmises Phil. “Modern casements have a layer of argon gas between the panes which, along with high-tech coatings, create a level of heat retention that on a property of your size could be up to 20 times more e ient t an your e isting win ows y win ows ave lost t eir fit over ti e as well and some are now letting in a noticeable draught, making it clear to me that it’s time to upgrade. I learn that once I’ve chosen my windows, a 20% deposit, and a short lead time of approximately six to eight weeks while they are made to measure, will see my beautiful new windows arrive and installed. With such stylish frames I can see that I’m going to have to address my ageing front door as well and it’s no surprise that Phil is easily able to accommodate my slightly quirky

I turn to Phil for reassurance. “At Dawes and Windows, we only employ the very best installers who are paid by the day, not by the window,” says Phil. “This means they never have to rush a job. Even if a job runs over by a day or two I would rather it was done well. You can have the best product in the world but if it’s poorly fitte you an ave roble s wit a an cold spots.” Phil tells me that much of Dawes and Windows’ work comes from customer recommendations and with an ethos like this, it's easy to see why.

Fortunately, we have really good relationships with our suppliers, which means, if necessary, we’re able to send over bran new s e ifi ations an ave t e made and imported within a few months.” While a few months may sound like a long time, as Emily rightly says: “These pieces are likely to remain prominent in your home for more than a decade, and they are quite an investment, so it pays to wait a little longer if it means having the perfect piece of furniture at the end.” Elizabeth Gelston, founder of WK Gelston Contractors, has worked on a number of projects with Rustic House over the last year. She tells us: “When working on Cornish evelo ents fin t at usti ouse s ethic works really well with our own. It’s
such a delight to pop into the showroom and know that I can source furniture that feels so bespoke and individual for our properties.” We ask Emily what her favourite project has been to date. “It has to be the Cider Barn – an eight-bedroom holiday let. We were very closely involved with this project, designing items for every aspect of the house, from skirting boards and doors, to the staircase and a number of large furniture pieces.” As part of the growing demand, Rustic House has also been approached for a number of PR events, including a product launch for REN Skincare at the Scarlet Hotel. “The brief was to provide some accent pieces to accompany the display of products, and it went so well that REN then contacted us directly to buy some of our pieces for an appearance on the QVC shopping channel.” Impressive! So, if you’re planning a home improvement, whether you’re making small changes or looking for a large statement piece of furniture to take centre stage that’s a e to your ersonal s e ifi ations w y not pop into Rustic House and have a chat with Emily and the team?

Christmas cards, Christmas paper, Christmas decorations, fairy lights and gifts are all available under one roof, making your Christmas shopping easy. Plus you can get your fi o C rist assy oo an rin s ro t e café upstairs, allowing you to couple your gift search with a warming hazelnut crunch hot chocolate, or a hearty and healthy veggie stew, which certainly sounds like our idea of heaven! Firstly, the innovative and ever-popular Grow Bars and Seed Balls, making the perfect gift for anyone with an interest in gardening but who doesn’t have masses of space. Then we have handmade felt tree decorations. Starting from just £2.99, these a e great sto ing fillers an t ere s also a heart-warming story behind them: founded in 2009, the decorations are designed in the UK and made in Nepal by skilled artisans using traditional techniques. By doing this, they promote fair trade with small craft communities while preserving traditional techniques and to make matters even better,
they’re made from natural dyes and are biodegradable, too. It wouldn’t be Christmas without jewellery and the handmade, fair trade jewellery available at Uneeka is simply stunning. Made by the Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Centre in Kenya – founded in 1969 as a rehabilitation centre for physically disabled people – this range of beautiful jewellery is made in workshops from brass and silver plate. Uneeka covers everything from homeware to accessories, so there’s always plenty to choose from when it comes to fair trade gifts. And if you want a gift on a slightly bigger scale, the selection of Taj recycled leather and jute rugs are beautiful, affordable and part of the Good Weave charity, which aims to eradicate child labour in the carpet industry and supports educational opportunities for children in India. Hand-crafted by adult artisans, these beautiful rugs make a statement in your home and help make the world a better place too.

A
s t e year raws to a lose we re e t on Good Life Joinery’s resounding success on some very exciting projects, which has led to them receiving a well-deserved and prestigious award. Presented to Good Life Joinery by the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), the award is titled ‘Best Change of Use for an Existing Building’ and was given for Good Life’s work on Hinterland House, a stunning property just 11 miles from Bude. The Good Life team framed the house with oak beams in a conversion sympathetic to the barn’s original features and a design that looks utterly gorgeous, making the most of light and space with glass partitions between the oak beams and a beautiful solid oak staircase. Managing Director Stuart BowmanHarris tells us: “We’re delighted and totally surprised by the win. It’s always a great feeling to get praise for a good piece of work. We were nominated for this award so it came completely out of the blue. To be shortlisted was amazing, and to actually win was just fantastic!” Impressively, this coveted award isn’t all the team has to shout about. There are some exciting commissions coming up in 2019 so, be sure to keep an eye out on their website for updates and images of these projects as they happen.
More recently, this accomplished woo wor ing fir also turne its oak framing expertise to making a giant story chair for a local primary school, which has been erected in a conservation area. “This was great fun to make.” Stuart explains. “It has handcarved inspirational words on the chair components. Some of them, the children have to search for and there are a few surprises too! It’s been a real hit.” Moving forward, Good Life Joinery is proud to be expanding its work force and has recently hired more staff and a new apprentice to continue to learn this impressive trade. The professional team also designs and makes kitchens, staircases and furniture, as well as windows and doors. So, if your home could do with an update but you’re not sure where to turn; with an impressive 2018 so far, Good Life Joinery could be the perfect solution for you and your home.

CAST
in Cornwall
The Cornish Bed Company has just unveiled new designs from its Classic Bed collection. We’re giving you an exclusive first look! ABOVE Handcast in Cornwall by a team of highly-skilled artisans
T
he Cornish Bed Company’s hand-cast bespoke beds, made by a small team of skilled craftsmen in the heart of Cornwall, now include a clear powder-coated 'Maud', a black and nickel 'Elizabeth', and an opulent upholstered four poster 'Billy'. “The new designs have come about solely as a result of customers asking us to make bespoke beds. We listened, and worked the new styles into our collection,” explains Cornish Bed Company Director, Garry Smith. He continues: “These are some of our most sought after beds, so we’re thrilled that we’re able to offer our customers more options to give them exactly the bed they want. “The range is so new that it’s not yet on our website, so customers who are interested need to give our team a call.” The company’s foundry, in Par’s historic railway roundhouse, is one of the last in the country to manufacture beds in this way, ying t e ag or sustainability an reating beautiful pieces of furniture which are designed and built to last a lifetime. Its artisans have honed time-honoured techniques, championed by their Victorian forefathers, to produce a range of luxury beds to grace homes and hotels across
Europe. Indeed, it’s as far from a production line as you could get. As Garry tells us: “The time and skill our engineers invest is evident in the end result. The beds are stylish and distinctive, an enduring state ent o onfi en e in any o e an in o arable to ea er o ern atpack alternatives.” It’s fair to say then – certainly in this case – that when you buy Cornish, you buy quality.

e l i m s e h TYOU DESERVE We speak to Jeremy Peak of River Practice, who explains why your smile is worth a thousand words. ABOVE Your smile is worth a thousand words
N
ow, we know it’s supposed to be a ‘picture’ that’s worth a thousand words, but when you think about it, your smile is similar in many ways. People take pleasure from a great piece art, and while they may interpret it in different ways, it generally stimulates positive emotions. Your smile, according to the team at River Practice, is your ‘shop window’ and there is over 50 years’ worth of research showing that people with attractive smiles are perceived as ore rien ly trustwort y an onfi ent an so o ten fin it easier to get on in li e owever being onfi ent in your s ile an be easier said than done, so what can you do to improve yours? Modern dentistry means that there are more options than ever before – orthodontics, implants, veneers, to name but a few – and even within orthodontics alone, there are more options including Invisalign treatment, Incognito, 6 Month Smiles, the list goes on. The astounding fact, Jeremy Peak of River Practice tells us, is that many dentists have received no more than a day or two’s training in some of the more complex aspects of t e fiel orse still t is training is o ten delivered by a company with a vested interest in promoting only its product. The dentist is only held accountable if it goes wrong and the patient is prepared to complain to the eneral ental Coun il t e o ial bo y t at regulates UK dentistry. So how to ensure that you only place your smile in the hands of someone that you can
trust? Jeremy offers some pointers: C e t e ualifi ations o t e entist you re considering – the General Dental Council website (www.gdc-uk.org) allows you to check t e ualifi ations an status o every entist in the UK. Look out for those that are specialists (especially if seeking orthodontic treatment) or at least have a relevant master’s degree (MSc or MScD).” He also recommends asking about their experience and training and why they think that they can offer you treatment of the same standard and value as a specialist would. “If they have unbeatable expertise, they will only be too glad to tell you!” “Also, are they able to offer you a full range of treatments? Full braces as well as limited or hidden ones, for example.” “It’s always worth looking for reviews online but be sus i ious o very non-s e ifi comments – some practices buy reviews from 3rd party sites!” you re still unsure ere y finis es see a second opinion from a specialist practice such as us here at The River Practice. You can seek a second opinion directly, or through your dentist.”

Waterside’s delicious winter menu
The Cornish food and drink scene is buzzing, with the restaurants of Britain and beyond now fully switched on to the sort of high quality produce that our county excels in. And at Waterside – a stunning resort nestled in rolling countryside just outside Bodmin – they’re taking full advantage of the boom in local goodness to create something truly special on a daily basis. At Waterside’s own restaurant, Three Lakes, the chefs work hard with the best of the seasons’ produce and as those seasons roll towards Christmas, they’ve been developing and testing a menu designed to thrill visitors and locals alike. Waterside’s Director Ian Slater tells us: “We’re lucky enough to be in an area which is rich in stunning food, so it’s only right that we use the best of what’s on our doorstep.” The Christmas menu offers traditional staples done perfectly, Ian continues: “We’re a family orientated place so when we see the kids’ faces light up at the decorations, and their parents’ faces do the same when the food comes out, we know we’re doing something right.” With food this good and surroundings so beautiful to enjoy it in, it’s no wonder Waterside is so popular. “We’ve been taking bookings since July,” says Ian, “but we’re offering lunch and dinner all through December, along with our festive party evenings every Friday and Saturday night.” It looks like Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year at Waterside.

That’ll warm your cockles!
Producing the most delicious apple brandy and apple schnapps, Moorland Distillery’s vision is to produce quality drinks made from the purest ingredients, allowing them time to mature into truly exceptional products. Extensive research has led them to understand that some of the best brandies are produced in copper pot stills, as they retain more of the original aro as an avours w i is w y they now use a 150 litre copper pot still. What’s more, early trials have proven that a unique combination of quality natural ingredients, pure spirit, prolonged contact with oak and the Cornish climate has the potential to produce outstanding brandy. So if you’re looking for something home grown to add to the Christmas tipple cabinet, or know a connoisseur who’d love to add a bottle of proper Cornish spirit to their collection, be sure to pick up a bottle of Moorland Distillery’s Apple Brandy or Cornish Apple Original Schnapps. METHOD
teve and Lynn Allen of Riverford Home Delivery deliver fresh organic produce to homes throughout Cornwall. They tell us: “We believe there’s nothing better than good home cooking made using fresh, organic ingredients.” Every order is delivered with seasonal recipe suggestions and the Riverford website offers a large section of recipes to help get the most out of a veg box.
1
INGREDIENTS: 4 small squash (onion squash is ideal) 300g Ogleshield cheese (or a good melting cheese such as cheddar), grated 100g Parmesan (or vegetarian equivalent), grated
2
Divide the cheese and butter between the squash and add a grating of nutmeg and a small sprig of thyme to each, then pour in the cream to two thirds of the way up each squash bowl.
3
Season with generous amounts of black pepper and a cautious amount of salt – bear in mind the saltiness of the cheeses.
4
Put the lids on, place on a baking tray and bake for between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on the size of your squash, until tender.
40g butter A few gratings of nutmeg 4 small thyme sprigs 800ml double cream Salt and black pepper
Heat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Slice the tops off the squash and scoop out the seeds and pulp, then place the squash bowls, cut-side up on a baking tray (reserve the lids).
TOP TIP It’s a fantastic child pleaser for Halloween and has endless variations with different garnishes, for instance, some fried shitake or chestnut mushrooms would really up this dish’s earthy, autumnal feel.

n e oo e t e es s oul give to t e ti o t e ni e eat by s ra ing t e so t es into the hot cream. A variation on this is serving it in a large single squash, such as a Crown Prince. Treat it like a large fondue pot, dipping in toast soldiers or leftover roast potatoes. You will need to up the cooking time – this will take at least an hour, and it’s worth reducing the oven temperature to 180°C/Gas 4 and/ or wrapping the squash loosely with foil so that outside doesn’t brown too much before it cooks through.

Raise a glass We celebrate the achievements of artisan gin distillers, Curio, this Christmas.
| foodie
BELOW Husband and wife team, William and Rubina
C
urio Spirits, Cornwall’s artisan distillers, have good reason to be raising their glasses this Christmas. First and foremost, they have recently added another salubrious tipple to the already award-winning Curio range, sourcing blueberries from a former Cornish monastery. This refreshing gin is full of Cornish goodness, a worthy addition to the already popular Curio Rock Samphire (renamed Curio Wild Coast Gin) and Curio Cardamon Vodka ranges. From the distillery that dares to be different, Curio Blueberry is an inspiring addition. We hear from Curio Alchemist and Head Distiller William Tyler-Street, who tells us: “This is a soothing gin with a leasing ersonality an e t o avour designed to be sipped neat or enjoyed with tonic.” Keeping to the Curio ethos of sourcing botanicals locally, the blueberries are taken from Bonallack, just a few miles inland from the coastal distillery. Bonallack is situated on the upper reaches of the Helford river, on the site of a Bronze Age settlement. A Time Team dig here discovered remains from the 12th century, including evidence of the cultivation of berries and other vaccinium. So it appears that at onalla Curio was ertainly not t e first to appreciate the taste and medicinal properties of blueberries and other botanicals! Blueberries contain anthocyanin that gives t e t eir blue olour an ealt benefits they help heart health, bone strength, blood pressure, diabetes management, cancer prevention and mental wellbeing. Along with the new gin, the original Curio Rock Samphire Gin has been renamed Curio il Coast in to re e t t e oastal lo ation of the distillery, as well as nodding towards the ethos of hand foraging rock samphire and seaweed from the local clifftops. Curio Director and Partner Rubina Tyler-Street explains: “As the coastline played such an important part in the creation of Curio, we felt that we should acknowledge that in the name of the gin.” Also new for 2018 are the new bottles for the Curio range a e ro re y le glass which make Curio the only completely recycled gin bottle in Cornwall and one of only a few in the UK!

FINE DINING

MAIN The dining room at Rastella is a sea of crisp white linen and sparkling tableware RIGHT Chef Patron, Hylton Espey
We visit award-winning restaurant, Rastella, and discover city-style dining on the Cornish coast.
N
ow, don’t get me wrong, Cornwall has some exceptional restaurants but the very nature of our seaside location eans t at w ile oo is first lass t e ambience is often laid back. While heading to dinner straight from the beach in shorts and i o s obviously as its a eal so eti es something a little more chic is the order of the day. We’d heard many good things about Rastella, the restaurant at Merchants Manor in Falmouth, not least of which is its recently awarded and highly coveted third AA Rosette – one of only four restaurants in Cornwall to boast this accolade. Chef Patron, Hylton Espey, was born and raised in South Africa. It was Merchants anor s evotion to using t e finest res lo al ingredients, an ethos that matches Hylton’s own, along with a love of the sea that drew him to Falmouth and Rastella. It has proved to be a match made in heaven. On arrival you can’t fail to be bowled over by the grandeur of the building – the ivy-clad doorway heralds an opulent interior where sparkling chandeliers light up the traditional entrance hall. We’re escorted to the bar where we are greeted with a delicious glass of Cornish vineyard Trevibben Mill’s Blanc De Blancs 2014. As we let t e fine bubbles aress our out s we get a

chance to peruse the evening’s tasting menu a s ow ase o ylton s finest is es e bar an ining roo rival t e very finest o London restaurants when it comes to style and ambience. The tables are adorned with crisp linen and the cutlery shimmers in the evening light as we are shown to our table. C e ylton oins us to intro u e our first course – Game Bird – pheasant, reared on the nearby Roseland, served with puffed heritage grains and a plum caramel. The richness of the fowl is cut through beautifully with the sweet, but slightly acidic plum caramel. It’s paired perfectly with a glass of Trevibben Mill arlyn an o - ry w ite t at as avours o watermelon and honey. We learn that Hylton takes daily foraging trips along the coast to pick fresh sea vegetables for his outstanding dishes. The kitchen team works to the simple ethos of ‘what grows together, goes together’ and nowhere is that more apparent than in tonight’s main dish of the intriguingly named Trewithick Pastures. Hylton is on hand to explain that the lamb he’s about to serve comes from a farm nearby, where the lambs gra e on fiel s overloo ing t e sea above Porthleven. This lamb combines perfectly with fresh, local crab and a foraged vegetable selection of rock samphire and sea aster. Even part of the lamb in the dish is roasted with hay from the very farm from whence it came. Everything is cooked to perfection and is served with Hylton’s signature B.O.F.G.A – a burnt onion fermented garlic aioli. We are treated to a Black Ram Red, again from Trevibben Mill, to drink with our lamb. Hints of aromatic herbs, leather and vanilla, along with spicy top notes of clove and li uori e are a fitting a o ani ent t s no
doubt that Hylton’s attention to detail and superb skill in all areas are what won him the three AA Rosettes and he proves that his talent goes beyond the savoury. Dessert is perfectly formed and perfectly named for the time of year – Autumn. Perhaps best described as a ‘deconstructed pumpkin pie’ we are treated to a swathe of sweet and gently spiced pumpkin along with a chai sorbet and crisp ginger fairing crumbs, topped off with a gently sparkling desert wine courtesy of a Fontanafredda Asti. Light and delicious this ends a meal that has been very special in many ways. Although part of the hotel, Rastella feels very much like a standalone restaurant, and has a chic and stylish identity of its own. The service throughout the meal was unobtrusive, yet impeccable and the wine choice a triumph. We resolve that this is a dining room we will return to for many a special occasion or celebratory dinner.

fter being graced with what seemed to be the hottest and most idyllic summer on record, the change of seasons brings with it the chance to venture out into the cold crisp mornings, crunch through falling leaves and stroll along empty beaches, with the calm tranquil waters of summer giving way to the more powerful and captivating winter swells. That’s the beauty of living in a seasonal country, the perceptible change in temperature offers respite from the hot summer and there’s something unequivocally satisfying about wrapping up warm on an icy winters day and heading out into the world. When it comes to kitting yourself out for the imminent cold of winter, Ann’s Cottage has got you covered from head to toe. From Barts Beanies to Stance Socks and everything in-between, any trip to an Ann’s Cottage store is sure to be a fruitful one. Inspired by the rugged textures of Cornwall’s north coast.
S
wedish Jeweller Carin Lindberg lives and works in the historic fishing village of Boscastle on the beautiful north coast of Cornwall. She takes inspiration from her Scandinavian heritage with its simplicity and elegance, as well as from the wild Cornish landscape surrounding her home. The new Rugged collection is therefore inspired by Cornwall’s spectacular north coast with its cliffs and rock formations, and incorporates the colours of the sky, sea, beaches and the surrounding landscape. Vibrant blues and greens team up with stormy greys and neutrals; sterling silver with rugged textures and a rustic patina complements the atmospheric colours and makes for a collection full of character and depth. The rugged collection has particular emphasis on one-of-a-kind pieces with beautiful striking gemstones such as opals, tourmaline, tanzanite and aquamarine and follows on from the very popular Pebble collection, featuring beach pebbles from Cornish beaches, set in sterling silver. Carin tells us: “I make jewellery that you can wear and love every day. My jewellery isn’t highly polished, nor mass produced, in fact I would go as far as to say that perfect is boring! My jewellery has character and personality, just like me and you.”
Carin continues: “I take pride in using quality materials, scouring the world, including my local beaches for unusual and precious stones. The fact that I make all of this with my own two hands also means that I’m happy to make bespoke pieces that incorporate elements of your particular personality.” So, if you want to keep a piece of Cornwall close to your heart with a beautifully crafted item of jewellery then make sure to visit the Carin Lindberg Jewellery website and discover the natural beauty of the Rugged collection.

PERSPECTIVES We hear from BA (Hons) Fashion graduate, Ayeshah George, about her propositions, views and aspirations for the future.
P
lymouth College of Art believes that high-quality education for life in contemporary arts practice is the creative catalyst for personal and cultural transformation. The college’s manifesto includes ten propositions, written by Plymouth College of Art Principal, Andrew Brewerton. These, added to the themes of Creative earning an o ial usti e efine its strategic plans for the future. As part of their most recent campaign – ‘What’s your Proposition?' – the college invited 13 students, recent graduates and alumni to contribute their own propositions, so their views and aspirations could take centre stage. From a Film student campaigning for change in Northern Ireland and a Photography graduate documenting the power of nature in Hungary, to a Graphic Design student empowering black women in the creative industries, the campaign focuses on allowing each participant to broadcast their own manifesto. 'What's your Proposition?' involved a photo shoot with each participant, the images from which would later be turned into artwork displaying them and their propositions. Ayeshah George, a BA (Hons) Fashion graduate, had a keen passion for innovation in art before joining Plymouth College of Art. After enrolling, she truly began her creative journey in the fashion industry, having moved to Plymouth for a new adventure and to begin crafting her future. Ayeshah tells us: “My ro osition is t e infinity sy bol or so e it represents everlasting love, for others, it represents eternal existence. For me, it’s a symbol of balance and hope. Whatever has been lost will come back in a different form. It reminds me to have faith when life becomes overwhelming.” e is also a fir believer in being true to yourself. “As an artist, my main goal is to create something that provokes emotion within someone. I use my platform to promote individuality and inspire others to think differently. Art is a great way to educate others and share unique perspectives.”
Finally, Ayeshah tells us: “Stay curious. I studied Fashion and came out of it not only with better skills as an artist, but a better understanding of myself. The pressure of an art degree pushes you to reach levels of deeper introspection and analyse yourself in order to improve. “They say curiosity killed the cat and sometimes I feel like that cat, always searching for depth in everything. I try to keep an open mind, and being born dual heritage meant being born into two different cultures. I enjoy celebrating my background and roots, while learning about others too.” If you’re interested in creative study, why not explore the diverse range of design programmes available at Plymouth College of Art? From Fashion and Textile Practices to Interior Decoration, Design and Styling, you re boun to fin t e reative stu y t at en a es your assion so be sure to visit one of the college’s upcoming open days.
