to the February issue of Cornwall Living

his time of year I quite often get ‘itchy feet’ and feel like moving house. I think it’s the prospect of spring being just around the corner and wanting to start the new year with a new project. If you’re the same, whether that be a move within Cornwall, a new build, a relocation, or a property investment then our cover feature this month (from page 24) will make very interesting reading. Our Content Manager, Dan Warden has been in conversation with some of Cornwall’s leading property agents, architects and interior experts in his quest to find out what it takes to achieve your dream home in Cornwall. We’ve showcased one such home on this month’s cover – this stunning CGI image of Woodlands, from Legacy Properties, shows what will become someone’s perfect coastal home. It’s all go this month here at Cornwall Living as we launch our fabulous, new Little piece of Cornwall subscription box. By subscribing, you will receive a luxury gift box packed full of a host of Cornish goodies for you to sample, as well as the latest edition of Cornwall Living. Our launch box has a foodie theme and we are delighted to bring you an exclusive readers’ offer that will save you 10% when signing up. Simply quote CL82FEB when ordering online at www.littlepieceofcornwall.co.uk/subsciption-boxes. We just had to sample some of this month’s tasty treats – turn to page 77 to read our review. February is also the month when many of our thoughts are turning to booking this year’s holiday. There’s no better time to enjoy a ‘staycation’ and Cornwall has to be the ultimate destination if you are looking for a combination of coast and countryside. From page 62, we have showcased a selection for you to choose from. Enjoy!

Starting a new

build project?

Good tradesmen, quality control, quick progress on site, compliancy to the latest standards and energy efficiency are the main things people look for when they embark on a building project. Times are changing, products are developing faster than ever and BWF are right there at the forefront of innovative build solutions. The most complex aspect of the build is often the structure, which must be suitably insulated, airtight and of course structurally sound. BWF are leading the way in off-site construction for the south west, providing timber frames and SIPS structures or hybrids of both products.

Methods and materials are similar to standard construction, but the components are pre-engineered and accurately prepared in the unit, ensuring time spent on site is considerably reduced. For more information call 01872 273757 or visit www.buildingwithframes.co.uk

Land, sea or allotment – the choice is yours! Back with a bang after a month to recharge their batteries, Hooked on the Rocks are excited to announce another one of their gastronomic evenings, ‘Land, Sea & Allotment’, taking place Friday 1st March. With tickets costing just £45, available online or by calling the restaurant, this evening of carefully sourced food and wine will showcase the incredible suppliers who work effortlessly to provide Hooked with some of the finest produce our county has to offer. Head Chef George Morgan and the team have worked alongside trusted suppliers to create three bespoke menus: Land (meat), Sea (fish) and Allotment (vegetarian), reaffirming the restaurant’s ethos of local, seasonal and sustainable produce treated with love. A way out of loneliness with Bluebird Care Loneliness is more likely to affect older adults, who due to bereavement, health conditions and limited mobility may become isolated and unable to utilise the benefits of technology or participate in group activities as easily. Bluebird Care can provide a professional live-in companion to make all the difference. They’re available to help out five to eight hours a day, and live in their own room in your home, near enough to call on when needed. The time spent together can be a lifesaver. No need to worry about how to get out and meet friends, as your companion can drop you

off, and if friends call, will be happy to make them a drink or snack, which is wonderful. You can even do regular trips around the county, going to places old and new to explore and enjoy. Having a live-in companion is a lifestyle choice, and the regular human contact and friendly face makes a world of difference in reducing isolation and loneliness. It can also be a huge relief for friends and family, seeing you lively and energetic again, knowing there is someone there if you are unwell, or simply need to get outside and enjoy a sunny day. For more information call 01872 276006 or email midcornwall@bluebirdcare.co.uk

Mr and Mrs Dukes, who recently benefitted from the combined expertise at Lilly Lewarne Architects, had this to say about the teams’ approach to helping them realise their dream home.

to your kitchen

Greys are a popular choice in modern kitchens, and although a neutral colour palette will stand the test of time, the trend towards bolder colours and contrasting textures is a way to lift your interiors out of the norm. There are subtle ways to include colour without it dominating the room, consider using richer shades in base cabinets or island units for example, and an artisan splashback with statement glass to provide the ultimate finish. Darker stone worktops provide a dramatic contrast, alternatively choose ultra-matt concrete Quartzstone or large veined granites. We hear from Christine who tells us: “At Now Kitchens we have a large range of worktop materials to complement our modern and classic

“When considering using an architect to help us design our latest home, it was important to us that we not only engaged a forward thinking firm, but one that really gets involved in the passion for building your own home. Lilly Lewarne not only showed their passion but believed in ours, guiding us through the technical minefields whilst remaining committed to the brief we had set them. The result was a design that was sensitive to the surrounding woodland area and topography of the site, whilst allowing us a modern feel in our home. We would not hesitate in recommending this Cornish company to any and all self-build enthusiasts.”

News & views Resounding success for Slickers photo shoot

Holiday home tips Now we’re all recovering from the Christmas break, to cheer us up, the team at Slickers Doghouse in Padstow have been reminiscing about their wonderful December dog photo shoot, which they ran with Kate Whis Photography at the Padstow Christmas Festival. Slickers owner, Lisa, tells us: “What an amazing four days! We photographed over 60 dogs and, despite the rain, cold, sand and sea-soaked dogs, Kate captured some fantastic shots of each and every one – even the worst wrigglers were finally persuaded to give us their best pose, albeit with the aid of our yummiest treats.” After the shoot, the owners were able to purchase portraits of their furry friends online, with options including portrait downloads; superior quality, high gloss coated ultra white ceramic mugs; cushion covers, and sets of hardboard, cork-backed coasters, complete with attractive mahogany holders.

In an ongoing series of holiday home tips, we hear from George at Cornish Traditional Cottages about getting and responding to feedback. Orders are sent to Slickers’ printing company who, in most instances, print and dispatch the same day, meaning your personalised purchases are delivered as quickly as possible. Coming soon to the Slickers website is the option to personalise your portraits with dates and names, before having them printed on your chosen product. And, if you missed the photo shoot in December, fear not! Lisa explains: “This was our first joint Slickers/Kate Whis photo shoot, but due to its resounding success we will be holding these at various other times throughout 2019, starting with the Easter holidays. You can also book a personal beach photo shoot with Kate, either through our website or in store.” For more information call 07971 005071 or visit www.slickersdoghouse.co.uk

Fundraiser extraordinaire Jerry Gill from St Austell is a man on a very successful mission. By the end of 2018 he had raised more than £5,000 for Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care by walking on fire, running, street collecting and auctioning. Jerry decided to take part in a fire walk held at Bodmin Jail. He tells us: “I wanted to do this in memory of my late wife and only daughter who both died in a hospice.” On the day, Jerry ran the 14 miles from home to Bodmin in fancy dress! He also became the first person to run in all five of the charity’s Santa Runs and did three online auctions, six street collections and donated prize money when he won a Community Champion Award.

As well as making sure your guests’ holiday gets off on the right footing, you also want to collect their feedback. Peer opinion forms a vital part of decision making and buying behaviour in today’s world, and holidaymakers are far more likely to book a holiday home that has positive opinions. Garnering this valuable information will also help your marketing by: raising your ranking on holiday letting portals; telling other guests what to expect at your Cornish holiday home; providing you with a perspective that’ll help you improve your accommodation. However, getting guests to provide feedback isn’t always easy. George suggests keeping a guestbook in a clearly visible place. “Add a note to the front cover asking guests to write their comments, and keep a pen inside. Afterwards, type out their review and include it in an email to them asking for permission to use on your website and/or your marketing material. You could also request that they submit it to a holiday letting portal as part of their online review.” Send your guests an email asking for feedback within four to ten days after their stay, explaining that it will help you improve your accommodation for future guests and attract new business. It’s also worth mentioning that you’re keen to encourage them to return, and encouraging them to make contact during their stay if something isn’t quite right. For more information call 01208 893980 or visit www.corncott.com

“To say goodbye to a loved one is the saddest, most difficult thing to do and can be traumatising. The support provided by hospice staff surpasses everything.” For more information call 01726 66868 or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

We hear from Daniel Kensit, Project Manager at Bude Windows & Conservatories, who tells us: “Installing an orangery, conservatory or even new doors and windows can add incredible value to your home, creating a warm and welcoming space to enjoy. The fact that the rooms are flooded with light makes them a massive attraction to provide an additional living space or even a kitchen extension. Similarly, replacing old windows can maximise your natural light, with high quality materials available now that may not have been on the market when they were first installed.” So, if you want to create a lighter, brighter and more spacious home, then make sure to visit the Bude

rom ultra-modern new builds on the water’s edge to carefully restored character homes in the country, Cornwall’s property market is as diverse as the landscape itself. Over the next few pages we’ll speak to some of Cornwall’s leading property agents and experts, unveiling popular locations and ones to watch, also seeking advice for anybody looking to buy, sell or self-build. Then, to round it all off, we’ll be talking to some of Cornwall’s finest interior and homeware brands, arming you with all the inspiration you’ll need to decorate your home, whether you’re just moving in or preparing to go to market.

To begin we do a little digging into what really sets Cornwall’s property market apart. Jo Ashby from John Bray and Partners points out “the timeless coastline, miles and miles of unspoilt landscape, stunning views and natural habitats, to name just a few things that make Cornwall so incredible!” On the property available here, Ben Wakefield, Partner at Falmouth-based agents Harding & Wakefield explains: “Cornwall has something for everyone, with an eclectic range of property and locations to suit all tastes.” Spending time by the sea is a huge draw, says Jackie Stanley’s Padstow Office Manager, Simon Poole. “Cornwall also has so many different environments to choose from, from seaside resorts to moorland isolation; villages and hamlets to city living, yet by Cornwall’s very nature, wherever you live you are never far from the coast.” Managing Director of the Mather Partnership, Pete Courtis, agrees that Cornwall allows people the opportunity to live the dream lifestyle. “The atmosphere around the county is so friendly, making it an ideal place to bring up a family, to retire to, or to enjoy a fantastic work/life balance.” Sean Johnston, Partner at Philip Martin Estate Agents in Truro also suggests that it’s perfect for different types of investors, with a strong holiday and residential lettings market.

As Martyn Rohrs from Rohrs & Rowe puts it: “It’s all about the lifestyle,” one which Nicola Markham, Group Sales Director at Acorn Blue describes as “permanently wonderful.” Martyn continues: “Many purchasers seek a home that’s able to offer a change of lifestyle, but they’d also like it to be in an amazing location and for it to create an income that enables them to either retire early, or work a great deal less.” You only need to look at a property named Gweath (pictured left), currently in the Rohrs & Rowe portfolio, to see what Martyn means. Perhaps most importantly for many of us is that Cornwall offers a wide variety of properties to suit all budgets, from starter houses to multi-million pound super homes. And in this modern age, as Ben Davies, Head of Residential at Savills Cornwall explains: “The increased availability of superfast broadband across Cornwall is enabling more families and couples to make the move.”

THE DEVIL’S IN THE DETAIL Martyn Rohrs tells us: “The key to selling the best properties is attention to detail at all stages of the sale, something we pride ourselves on and our clients tell us we are very good at.”

n 16 Dunstanville Terrace, Savills

The current market So what does the current market look like? With Brexit looming, is property still a good long-term investment? Fortunately, the general consensus among our experts is a positive one. Indeed, as Sean Johnston points out, the Rightmove Price Index reports that house prices in Cornwall over the past year were up 3% on 2017 and 9% up on 2015! He explains that Brexit-related uncertainty “has not thus far been too disruptive to house prices and movement.” In fact, Simon Poole explains: “We found the last few months of 2018 very strong in terms of sales, which bodes well heading into 2019.” Martyn Rohrs tells us that while a looming Brexit brought uncertainty to London and parts of the south east last year, “Cornwall bucked the trend. People’s desire for a better lifestyle continues to drive the market, and I’m sure will also make property here a very good investment.”

A HIDDEN GEM Jo Ashby from John Bray says: “Trebarwith has remained a well-kept secret, close enough to tap in to the buzzing hot spots on the north coast but less populated and with easy access to Bodmin Moor.”

LOOKING TO SELL? Ben from Savills suggests: “Try to get personal recommendations [for agents] and be prepared that some properties may take longer to sell than expected.”

When looking to buy property location will be near, if not at, the top of your list, but where to start in such a beautiful county? On the south coast, Pete Courtis points out the likes of Porthleven, Praa Sands and Coverack on the Lizard. Indeed, Martyn Rohrs tells us that the Lizard has seen a surge in interest, thanks to stunning scenery, tranquil beaches and property that’s particularly good in value when compared to more renowned Cornish locations. Martyn also recommends the Seven Bays area in north Cornwall, explaining: “The area to the south of Padstow was very popular last year. With a combination of spectacular surfing beaches, dramatic coastline, excellent outdoor lifestyle facilities and access to some of the best individual restaurants in the country, you can understand why!” To find out more about the Seven Bays and the property Rohrs and Rowe are marketing there, turn to page 40. Falmouth has also proven popular, with Savills’ Ben highlighting it as the south coast’s most appealing town. He also explains that Truro remains popular, being Cornwall’s educational centre and only city. Philip Martin’s Sean elaborates: “Truro is always going to be popular. Thanks to its excellent shopping centre, private and state schools, mainline links to London and the Royal Cornwall Hospital, it appeals to a selection of different buyers.” Meanwhile, Jackie Stanley has witnessed a surge of interest on the north coast. “Villages like Mawgan Porth are going from strength to strength,” explains Simon. “Padstow continues to grow in popularity, and Wadebridge is also hugely popular, with a wealth of independent shops, cafés, restaurants and schools increasing its appeal for families.”

Chris Combe

Location, location, location

Buying advice So what advice can Cornwall’s property experts offer when it comes to finding the right property? Jo Ashby says: “Work out what’s important for you – is it peace and quiet? Being close to the beach? Focus on a location, get to know the agents that cover that area and keep in touch. Or, use a property search agent who can short list the kind of properties you’re looking for, analyse pros and cons and negotiate on your behalf.” “It’s an age-old cliché, but to say ‘location is key’ really isn’t very far off the mark,” explains Ben Wakefield. “Knowing where you want to be and what you want from your surroundings is vital.” If you’re unsure, he suggests immersing yourself in the different areas you’re considering for a few days, to really start enjoying what the county has to offer. Pete tells us: “Your search for a Cornish property will be governed by location and particularly what you have to spend. But there is a wide choice available and don’t forget, for those moving from the London and south east areas, Cornish prices may still look ‘cheap’ by comparison!” Wherever you decide to buy, Nicola Markham, Group Sales Director at Acorn Blue says: “Cornwall offers so much to those seeking a work life balance, it’s a great place to call home.”

From the ground up Perhaps you’re looking to build your dream home from the ground up. If so, you’ll be very well served here in Cornwall, with a number of fantastic companies each bringing decades of industry experience to the table. So where to start? Chris from RA Design tells us: “For us at present a lot of self-builders are looking at renovating and building near the sea. We’ve seen an influx of work in Porthleven. St Ives, Carbis Bay and Marazion are also popular areas.” On the project itself, Chris says: “My main advice would be to do your research and appoint the right professionals to help you. The first thing to do is secure a site you’re happy with, ideally with planning permission already granted. Failing this, make sure you’ve had advice on the possibility of gaining permission. This is best done by speaking to an architect or architectural technologist at a very early stage, as they can advise on the possibilities and whether a pre-planning application is required.” Chris continues: “Once this is done, put together some ideas of the things you would like to include and put together a brief for the designer to work to. At RA Design we usually ask for bullet points of the key things you want including. This will allow us to start the design process, also giving you ideas and options. The design process, in our view, works a lot better when both parties can freely throw around ideas.”

This ethos is very much shared by the expert team at Lilly Lewarne Architects. Company Director, Gill Moran, elaborates: “If you’re thinking of self-building in Cornwall, we suggest seeking the advice of Cornish architects who have, over many years, developed detailed design knowledge. This will save you money in the long run and guide you through the process in a professional manner.” Cornwall is a unique environment in which to build and, particularly in coastal locations, requires a more carefully considered approach to design than projects in other areas. Lilly Lewarne consistently deliver in such locations and the proof really is in the pudding – turn to page 17 to read a recent glowing review!

COVER FEATURE | Nick Long, Managing Director of Legacy Properties & Homes, tells us that careful planning and thoughtful design is paramount when building their luxury properties and contemporary homes. “Meticulous attention to detail is integral to building premium coastal developments; and throughout the whole process – from concept through to design, build, and completion. We work extremely closely with our architects and in-house spatial designers to ensure our builds maximise living space, take advantage of available light/views, plus are sustainable and robust to the elements. We always think primarily about the end consumer and how they will live in and enjoy the property.” This is reflected in Legacy’s portfolio to date, which offers buyers the chance n Woodlands, an exciting

coastal development from Legacy Properties (CGI)

to obtain a brand new, state-of-the-art home right by the sea. A luxury home at Woodlands (pictured), their flagship development which overlooks The Gannel Estuary in Newquay, provides all of these qualities – plus the chance to choose fittings and interiors, making it 100% bespoke to the consumer. Speaking with Nicola at bespoke property developers, Acorn Blue, we ask what is most important to them when building new homes. “The opportunity has to meet our criteria. The location and view are paramount, and then we will look at factors such as transport links, parking and broadband speed. Ultimately, the aim is to always create high-quality homes we are proud of.”

Make your house a home

n The Cotton Mills

As Joanna Eldridge, founder of Jo & Co Home, says: “Your home is a place to rest and relax, so it’s important that you feel comfortable.” On updating your interior, Jo continues: “Once you feel confident with your chosen style and colours, remind yourself to keep it simple. It’s very easy to add too much to your home, so try avoiding this trap.” So what about furnishing your new home? Jo explains: “I advise investing for the long term with a handmade item, rather than something mass produced. It will last you for years to come!” Elaine Skinner at Camellia Interiors has built a reputation as an interior design specialist for luxury holiday homes, regularly supporting her clients with home improvements for all house types. Elaine has developed three stylish furniture packs ready for the new holiday home investors or property developers. These are itemised by room and enable buyers or sellers to get a complete inventory done in one simple order. “You can go for the whole house or just install packs for key rooms – the end result is a cohesive look that instantly adds value to your property.” In new homes where a neutral colour scheme has been adopted, Elaine suggests a splash of colour to add warmth to an empty room, whether with paintwork or a carpet. And if you are looking to recarpet a room, or for a statement rug to help bring a room to life, a trip to Wadebridge-based Cornwall Rug Company comes highly recommended, with a collection that offers originality in design and utilises the latest trends and colours. Automate your home

Your home is your place to rest and relax, so it’s important you take the time to work out exactly what look and style works for you. And when it comes to furnishing your home, as founder of Jo & Co, Joanna Eldridge puts it: “Buying a large piece of furniture takes a lot of consideration, so I advise that you invest for the long term with a handmade item rather than something mass produced. It will last you for years to come.” If you’re looking for quality items, be it large pieces of furniture, soft furnishings or simply inspiration, Jo & Co’s interior and lifestyle store in Wadebridge is well worth a visit.

Set up more than 16 years ago and with more than 25 years’ experience in the industry, Westcountry Blinds is committed to making our homes both beautiful and functional. n this month’s cover feature, we caught up with Martyn Rohrs from award-winning property agents, Rohrs & Rowe. Martyn explained that the Seven Bays area – famous for their fabulous, sandy beaches – should definitely be on the list for anyone looking to buy a Cornish property. We do a little digging into the Seven Bays area, showcasing three spectacular properties currently on the market with Rohrs & Rowe. Consisting of Trevone, Harlyn, Mother Ivey’s, Booby’s, Constantine, Treyarnon and

Porthcothan, the Seven Bays epitomise the ultimate lifestyle by the sea. Think stunning views, sheltered coves, superb surfing, sandy beaches, excellent golf courses and long coastal walks on the South West Coast Path. Not to mention that the restaurants and independent retailers offer some of the finest food and wares that Cornwall has to offer. As you might expect in such a beautiful part of the world, the property here is highly desirable, offering owners the perfect base from which to capitalise on the Cornish lifestyle.

Rosben, a charming coastal home just 200 metres from Trevone beach

Just 200 metres from Trevone beach you’ll find Rosben, a deceptively spacious detached coastal home with three bedrooms. The living spaces in this charming family home are very flexible with the main sitting room on the first floor. With a wood burner to keep things cosy in the evening plus an attractive ‘beach chic’ décor, Rosben is the ideal beach retreat, whether you’re looking to relocate or seeking the perfect ‘lock up and leave’ investment for those bucket and spade family holidays.

(Guide price: £625,000)

ê BELOW Tredower with its stunning, 360 degree panorama

Next up is Tredower. From the outside, the property’s attractive half slate hung elevations make quite the first impression. Inside you'll find good-sized living accommodation and four bedrooms plus a study on the ground floor that could easily be used as a fifth. The sea views on offer are simply astounding and the first floor, thanks to its extra elevation, offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the entire Seven Bays area. As well as a double garage and considerable parking, the outside space comprises around three acres of land on the seaward side of the property, protecting your views. The crowning jewel, however, has to be the large deck, accessed via the dining room to the rear of the house and making the most of scintillating sea views – perfect for a summer barbecue!

(Guide price: £1,150,000)

Finally we have Trelawney, an exceptional coastal residence that’s been designed to maximise the fabulous sea views towards Harlyn Bay. With four large double bedrooms over two floors, including three en suites, this stunning contemporary home enjoys a very high specification throughout, with an exacting finish that’s rarely seen in Cornwall. With high ceilings and architectural glazing that floods it with light, the open plan living and kitchen area is exceptionally spacious. One feature of particular note here is the floor-toceiling glazing that runs the full width of the living room, offering views of the gardens, the ocean and the horizon beyond. Outside, Trelawney boasts landscaped gardens with a large patio area that wraps itself around the property. There’s also an impressive seating and barbecue area along with a feature fire pit, great for starry evenings, and at the rear a large separate patio area serves as a sun trap, perfect for soaking up those Cornish summer rays. Other features include a heated outdoor shower – ideal for rinsing sandy toes – plus secure storage for surf boards, garden and beach equipment. All of this plus off-road parking for several cars!

TOUR DE FORCE Celebrating a partnership between luxury property agents, Rohrs & Rowe, and Saint Piran, Cornwall’s first elite cycling team. é ABOVE Climbing the Portreath wall ê BELOW There are so many amazing places to ride in Cornwall

T

his month we’re delighted to meet up with Richard Pascoe (Ricci to his friends), Team Principal of the Saint Piran Cycling Team, and Matthew Rowe of Rohrs & Rowe Estate Agents, to introduce their collaboration and to hear how things are progressing for Cornwall’s first and only professional cycling team. The Rohrs & Rowe and Saint Piran’s alliance was born out of a shared passion for cycling, and from Matthew and Richard having known each other for a number of years. Cycling has been a big part of both their lives, Richard on a professional level and Matthew purely for enjoyment. Matthew tells us: “A number of years ago I was fortunate enough to meet and get to know Ricci, who has been a major part of the Cornish cycling scene for decades. I’ve always loved cycling and from a young age it has enabled me to see so much of our beautiful county, whilst keeping fit at the same time! I have keenly followed the progress of Saint Piran since their launch four years ago and last year, I approached Ricci about how Rohrs & Rowe may be able to help the team. We are now delighted to be working with them in 2019. We have the obvious mutual passion for cycling but we also share the same ethos;

promoting what a fantastic place Cornwall is to live and the healthy lifestyle it enables. We feel that the unique and excellent work that Saint Piran are doing perfectly reflects these benefits and we’re now very proud to be partnered with the team, helping them to achieve their goals and to attract further sponsors.” The Saint Piran team was formed four years ago by Richard and former Team Sky rider, Jonathan Tiernan-Locke, to realise their shared vision of a Cornwall-based team that could compete on a national level. Richard explains: “It has come about by true Cornish spirit! We asked ourselves why we couldn’t form a team to compete at the highest level despite geography, a lack of rider numbers and less potential national sponsors, and we have managed to successfully achieve it! We are proud of our location and heritage, so we wanted to use a team to help promote Cornwall. It also provides young local people the opportunity to become professional riders and race at the national championships, against teams like Sky, Wiggins and Bike Channel.” Impressively, the team has been invited to ride the televised Tour Series in May, an exciting 10-round series of races held within

The team’s star rider is Steve Lampier from Helston, one of the UK’s top domestic riders, who has returned to Cornwall specifically to manage and represent Saint Piran. Saint Piran has five other riders from Cornwall, including top-performing Jake Alderman and Will Harper from Falmouth. Development riders Alex Platt from Redruth, Joe Healey from Perranarworthal and Alfie Peters from Bissoe make up the team. Championing cycling excellence in Cornwall, Saint Piran represents more than just the chance to cycle at a top level for young Cornish riders, which is illustrated wonderfully in the short film on the Saint Piran team website. Matthew finishes: “There are so many amazing places to ride in Cornwall, with the cycle café at Bissoe (owned and run by Ricci) being a fantastic hub to start from. The location enables riders to access the Lizard, the north coast and far beyond, as well as shorter trips for less experienced riders, with many tracks and off-road sections, making it perfect for all abilities!”

uilt in 2014 and cherished by the owner since then, Seascape has been designed to maximise the dramatic coastal views, with spacious accommodation set out over four floors. As you enter on the ground floor a smartly tiled entrance hall and cloakroom make a great first impression. Up the seagrass-style carpeted stairs to the first floor and you’ll find a beautifully appointed kitchen with high-end modern appliances, including a dishwasher and double multifunction oven! Also on this level are the dining and living spaces, both looking out towards the harbour and imposing Cornish cliffs. A Contura wood burning stove keeps things cosy during the cooler months and in the summer, you can access the large outdoor patio via bi-folding doors, perfect for just watching the world go by beneath the Cornish sun. It’s hard not to love the attention to detail evident throughout Seascape, from the app controlled underfloor heating and Sonos sound system in the living space, to the outdoor shower in the rear courtyard – ideal for rinsing sand off after a day on Portreath’s beautiful beach! The four bedrooms – three of which have en suites – can be found on the second and top floors. The master bedroom boasts a view that can only be described as tremendous, with its own patio from which to enjoy it.

This property really needs viewing to be fully appreciated, but we think it’s fair to say that whether you’re seeking a lock up and leave investment or a forever home by the sea, Seascape would be absolutely perfect.

W

ABOVEì Explore secret coves and creeks around Falmouth RIGHTè The stunning interior of a Crabber yacht

e catch up with Cathy Millar from Cornish Crabbers and Cornish Blue Sailing, who tells us about these two fantastic, interconnected Cornish businesses. Based in Mylor near Falmouth, Cornish Blue Sailing offers visitors the chance to experience life on deck on the south Cornish coast’s fine sailing waters. You can simply enjoy a day out on the water, or charter a boat for a short break, and it’s entirely up to you whether you choose to hire a skipper or not (although if you haven’t much sailing experience, it does come highly recommended). Aboard one of the company’s newly built traditional Cornish Crabbers or Shrimpers, you’ll explore secret coves and creeks along the Carrick Roads and Helford estuary, before mooring up at one of the many historic inns and enjoying local seafood while soaking up the waterside views. For a skippered charter, you will plan your itinerary alongside Charter Manager, Mark Stacey, who will ensure you get the very best from your time on board. If required, he will also assist with the itinerary for those chartering ‘bareboat’, that is, without a skipper, showing them the areas best suited to the prevalent weather conditions. Whether you simply wish to relax and soak up the sea views, or literally learn the ropes of sailing, no experience is necessary with Cornish Blue Sailing and with a skippered charter you’ll find yourself gently eased into the joys of this much-loved pastime, on a trip that’s tailored to your needs and wishes. When your trip’s over, you may find yourself having developed a taste for life at sea. Cornish Blue Sailing is owned by Cornish Crabbers, a fantastic firm based in Rock on the north coast. Cornish Crabbers is known around the world as the leading builder of traditionally styled sailing yachts and motor launches. With exceptional build quality and unrivalled resale value, a Crabber or Shrimper from Cornish Crabbers is not only a pleasure to sail, but also a sensible investment for anybody looking to spend more time

on the water. If you do decide to buy a new shrimper following your charter, Cornish Crabbers will refund your charter fee in full. You can’t say fairer than that!

Introducing Cornwall’s oldest family run business, Alfred Smith & Son – much more than just a furniture store.

E

stablished in 1811 and recognised as Cornwall’s oldest family run business, Alfred Smith & Son in Penzance is a modern business with a wonderful heritage. Now in their fourth generation and third century of trading, Alfred Smith & Son continues to grow and just this year, the team excitedly unveiled a brand new showroom in Penzance, in partnership with British bed maker, Rest Assured. Over the years the team have developed a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of furniture retailing, offering expert advice on choosing the right furniture to suit your requirements. This can include anything from sofas and chairs when upgrading your living space, to dining sets, carpets and flooring, soft furnishings and, of course, bedroom furniture, including some of the finest beds and mattresses on the market. Owner Sue Calvert tells us: “We pride ourselves on our personable customer service. We like to build a rapport with our customers and really look after them, which is why they return time after time.” If you’ve decided that 2019 is the year to upgrade your bed and bedroom furniture then a visit to the beautiful Penzance showroom comes highly recommended, with over 50 beds, mattresses and divans on display from brands including Hypnos, Relyon, Harrison, Somnus and

Simba. What's more, not only can you experience the extensive range of Rest Assured pocket spring mattresses and beds – which are all handcrafted here in the UK – you can also make the most of Alfred Smith & Son's in-store bed and mattress specialists, who will be able to advise on the best product for you. You’ll also benefit from the Rest Assured 60 night comfort trial guarantee, so in the unlikely event that you’re unhappy with your new bed, you can simply return it for something more suitable. In this month’s cover feature we received some top interior design tips to help you transform your house into your dream home. If you’ve decided to update your interior and are looking to enlist the help of a business that holds its roots firmly in Cornwall, Alfred Smith & Son specialises in supplying quality furniture, carpets and curtains to create a homely environment, so why not pop into the Penzance showroom and see for yourself what Cornwall’s oldest family-run business can do for you?

HONOURING

TRADITION Placing emphasis on environmentally conscious and sustainable living, we catch up with Natural Build owner, Will Richard.

H

elston based Natural Build is a Cornish construction company that focuses on using natural and traditional methods such as cob and straw bale building, as well as lime plastering and traditional timber frame construction. Will tells us: “We use lime plaster and pointing, as well as other traditional techniques to properly maintain period properties where inappropriate cement renders and pointing will only worsen issues such as damp.” Years of experience in the industry ensure that the Natural Build team always use these products correctly, giving them the necessary time and care. “We are eco-build enthusiasts,” Will continues. “Straw bale construction comes with a tiny carbon footprint, and is incredibly energy efficient when lived in.” In fact, properly constructed, we learn that a straw bale house can achieve around 75% savings on heating costs. “There is enough straw wasted in the UK to build nearly

500,000 three-bed homes each year, and a traditional oak frame can last hundreds of years next to its stick built counterparts!” Will and the team are able to handle the entire project, from conception and planning right the way through to completing the construction work. They can also work on individual aspects of your project, with the ability to tackle more conventional building works, depending on your requirements. So if you’re looking to enlist the help of a Cornish company that shares your passion for eco-friendly living, one that can deliver the traditional look that will blend seamlessly into your home’s natural surroundings, be sure to give Will and the Natural Build team a call.

NEW FOR 2019 We catch up with Tamar Trading and discover exciting upcoming events and its innovative new range.

I

f you’re a self-confessed cookaholic, you’ll love the live cooking event coming up at Tamar Trading, Bodmin. Taking place on 1st March from 10am until 4pm, the event will give you the opportunity to try before you buy from a range of NEFF appliances. With cooking demonstrations showing how you can rustle up some delicious recipes, you’re sure to be inspired to get even more creative in the kitchen. You’ll see first hand appliances such as the Slide and Hide Oven range, which will really change the game for your cooking thanks to unique features that let you cook almost anything you can think of. Not to mention you’ll also get to meet likeminded cooks – all you need to bring is your love of fresh food and passion for getting creative in the kitchen. As well as this exciting event Tamar Trading has also recently introduced The Aria range of innovative worktops to its extensive collection. This unique product combines the striking aesthetics of natural materials with a highly developed engineering process. Aria has been developed to give you a strong alternative to natural and engineered stone,

without compromising on the durability or quality of those materials. Manufactured in two thicknesses, with 12mm and 20mm available, this range can help you transform your kitchen into the living space you’ve always desired. We hear from Showroom Manager, Sally Millergill: “This affordable new range mimics real stone but falls into the laminate price region. It’s an exciting product because it allows us to offer undermount and Belfast sink options to customers who may want the look and feel of real stone, without incurring the higher costs that real stone or composite stone options entail. It can also be cut and finished easily using normal woodworking tools with a pre-finished top, meaning that installing it won’t take as long either.” The Aria range adds another dimension to Tamar Trading’s already extensive collection, providing buyers with an alternative to more expensive stone materials, without compromising on finish. With stone, granite, quartz, wood and now luxurious laminate options, there’s sure to be something to suit all tastes, so make sure to fit in a visit to the Tamar Trading showroom and discover what worktop works best for you.

Whether you’re in the fledgling stages of your project or just need to make some finishing touches, the team at Tamar Trading are always available to help move your plans forward, ensuring all the time that you receive the best possible advice and the keenest prices. Tamar Trading prides itself on providing a personal service and the team endeavours to really get to know their customers, which enables them to provide outstanding kitchens and bathrooms tailored specifically to your needs. Specialising in flooring, worktops, laminates, compact, panel products, solid surfaces and wall panelling, Tamar Trading have access to the UK’s largest distributor of decorative surfaces, so you know you’re in safe hands. Don’t take our word for it though, head to the showroom in Bodmin and discover the exciting new range and upcoming events for yourself.

THE MAGIC OF We catch up with Mel Chambers at Alchemy Tiles and discover some of the secrets behind her expert tile inlay techniques.

é ì ABOVE Mel's tiles look great as splashbacks or as feature pieces in bathrooms

A

fter meeting Mel Chambers at Alchemy Tiles a few years back, we revisit this vast and ancient technique as it takes on a whole new role in her repertoire. Since moving to her new Studio in Mawnan Smith, the space has allowed Mel to develop the technique further and she has gone on to specialise in interior work with kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces – or just about anywhere that there’s a surface to decorate! With her skillset as a talented draughtswoman she has the ability to create bespoke and unique pieces for any space, shape or home. This includes everything from unique back splashes to exquisitely detailed fireplace surrounds. Mel works closely with each client to establish what kind of images and words resonate and have meaning for them, as well as ensuring it fits with the surrounding décor. The real magic, however, is in the carving, which is all done freehand. Rather than painting the tiles Mel uses the ancient inlay (or ‘encaustic’, as it’s technically known) technique, each piece is carved free hand into the wet clay before being filled in with coloured slip (running clay with oxides and stains added). Not to mention that all the colours are her own unique recipes, which she has developed over her career, continuously bringing new colour ranges out each year.

Once the inlaid clay has dried, the top layer is scraped back, revealing the design underneath. After a long drying process the tiles are then glazed with a clear crackle glaze and fired raw (only once) very slowly. When all the tiles are removed from the kiln, a stain is washed over the tile to highlight the unique crackle effect of the glaze. The whole process can take from four to eight weeks depending on the design and because the colour is actually fired earth, embedded into the tile, the colours will never fade or lose their vibrancy. Indeed, archaeologists are still uncovering ancient floors today that are thousands of years old and still as beautiful as the day they were laid. What makes these creations so special is that because of the way they are made, using raw organic materials, no design can ever be replicated – making each piece a bespoke unique creation, held eternally in earth and time.

G

withian, with its sweeping sands and rolling dog-friendly dunes, is a real hit during the school holidays – but can often be overlooked in the spring and early summer months – a time when Cornwall's at its finest. Looking out over St Ives bay, facing west, this part of the Cornish coastline takes full advantage of the Atlantic sunsets. It’s lifeguarded, with local cafés open for business and most importantly, the beaches are so quiet; you can have vast swathes of golden sands all to yourself. The Forever Cornwall team spent many days on the shores of Gwithian before July even arrived last year, marvelling at the delightfully warm temperatures and exploring the dunes. The waters were speckled with surfers, and there were plenty of perfect days to jump in and finally learn to use a surfboard, with clean and gentle waves. So, why not book an early escape to Gwithian this year and discover Forever Cornwall’s collection of cool beachside boltholes, laid back surf chalets and welcoming family holiday homes? Fill your days with coastal strolls, delicious local delicacies at the nearby Sunset Surf Café and paddling in rockpools with little ones. All Forever Cornwall retreats in Gwithian are just a stroll from the beach, and many are equipped with outside showers for salty hair and sandy toes. If you want to get active, the waters of Gwithian are perfect for getting to grips with boards of all kinds – whether you want to hone your surfing skills with a local surf school, try your hand at kite-surfing with The Hoxton Special team, or take advantage of calm waters and explore the beach via paddleboard, there’s plenty to do. And with lifeguard cover from May to September, you’ll be in safe hands. Your dog will thank you for holidaying in Gwithian too. Here, as well as the section

of beach that’s dog friendly, there’s also a whopping two-mile stretch where dogs are welcome at any time – or they can chase the scent of rabbits through the rolling dunes. Walk with them up the coastal footpath that takes you around Godrevy Head, passing the octagonal lighthouse that inspired Virginia Woolf, and around to the secret cove where almost all year round you can see as many as a hundred seals lounging on the inaccessible beach below, or bobbing around at sea. As you return, call in at Godrevy Beach Café or The Rock Pool for anything from local gin to a seafood dinner, and enjoy the feeling of lungs filled with fresh air before heading back to your Forever Cornwall beachside retreat. At this time of year self-catering accommodation is already starting to fill up, particularly in beautiful Gwithian, so if this sounds like your idea of an escape at Easter or in May, then don't leave it too late to book. Choose Surfside, a family friendly four sleeper with jaw-dropping views of Gwithian’s golden sands and turquoise waters, or Rockpools for the larger group, with its chic interiors and dog friendly garden. Gwithian House has a large garden with a brilliant barbeque and full size ping pong table – perfect for a friendly tournament – or escape to The Bolthole which lives up to its name; a cosy two sleeper with gorgeous sea views from the decking. There are several more properties in this stunning location, each with its own unique features and welcoming feel – Forever Cornwall can’t wait to welcome you to Gwithian.

f your 2019 New Year’s resolution is to be healthier and shed a few Christmas puddings in the process, then it’s time to explore Cornwall’s spectacular coastal footpaths. Walking for just 30 minutes a day can improve flexibility and strength in your joints, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, boost your immune system, decrease the risk of cancer, reduce anxiety and for any insomniacs out there, it’s also a great way to improve sleep. From Du Maurier to Fleetwood Mac, Cornwall’s walks are treasured by many. And with its 296 miles of coastline, it makes up nearly 50% of the South West Coast Path, meaning there’s always a new walk to discover! So, to kick-start your year of walking, here are some of our favourite walks and cottages to stay in. Popigale Cottage, Helford A beautifully furnished and traditional cottage in Helford village allowing you to enjoy the stunning walks along the Helford river. Here you’ll experience the waterside pubs, sub tropical plants and gardens around the river, and you’ll also find Frenchman’s Creek, made famous by Daphne Du Maurier’s novel. Four Winds, Portmellon Located in Portmellon, near the Caerhays Castle and Estate, it provides the perfect base to explore Caerhays. With the sea on your right, the coastal walk from Caerhays

will take you into the National Trust’s Lambsdowden Cove before climbing up into Greeb Point. This walk will take you to Hemmick beach, the perfect spot for a picnic. Then from the Dodman Point summit, you’ll see Fowey, Looe and Rame Head to the east and Nare Head to the west. 1 Seaspell Apartment, Constantine A stunning five-star apartment in Constantine Bay, with the potential to walk from Constantine to Porthcothan via Treyarnon beach where you’ll enjoy spectacular views and explore the many small coves named after the wine and pepper that was once smuggled there. We hear from Harriet Wills who tells us: “Here at Cornish Horizons we’ve got a property to suit every kind of holiday! Got Waste? We’ll collect it! Our convenient service guarantees your arriving guests are not greeted with someone else’s rubbish bags. We clear the bins for your guests, on their week of arrival, so no one is left to put out other people’s rubbish for collection. Not only do we offer holiday home waste collection, we collect all waste from weddings and private parties, whenever needed.

Holiday home waste is now labelled as commercial waste “By law, holiday lets and self-catering accommodation are not permitted to use the Council’s household collection service. The Controlled Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2012 set out how councils must deal with waste from holiday lets and selfcatering accommodation. The legislation says that these premises are businesses and should pay for a commercial waste service, including collection and disposal charges.

| STAY Piran Cottage, Lamorna It’s fair to say that locations don’t get much better than this! Piran Cottage is an enchanting retreat, overlooking the cove and just moments from the rugged footpath which leads to the nearby fishing village of Mousehole. This fabulous family home overlooks the turquoise sea and dramatic west coast of Cornwall, and is absolutely perfect for taking a step away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The accommodation is set out in a reversed level style, designed to make the most of the spectacular coastal views below. Relax in the open-plan dining and sitting room with its own cosy woodburner, and fall asleep downstairs to the sound of the sea in one of the two sumptuous bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you need to cook up a storm using the area’s rich local produce – including an electric Aga – and after a day delving into the local area, you can retreat back to the terraced garden and enjoy your supper in one of its numerous seating areas. Set in an enviable location, you can don your walking boots or grab your bucket and spade to create your own story book adventures; Piran Cottage is perfectly placed for pure escapism. What’s more, it’s impossible to tire of the captivating views here, views that will inspire artists, writers and explores alike.

The View, Marazion As you’d expect from a holiday home with this name, the views from this luxurious and large property are simply stunning. From its position above Marazion you have unparalleled ocean views from the reverse level accommodation over Mount’s Bay and across to the iconic St Michael’s Mount – looking south and west toward the sun as it sets beyond the Penwith peninsula. As you step over the threshold you will be met with a large, bright and airy interior with a spectacular open plan kitchen and living space, complete with comfy sofas and stylish soft furnishings. You have six bedrooms here to accommodate the largest of families, and still have room to spare. The lower floor boasts an additional living area, which provides the perfect space for teenagers to entertain themselves away from it all, or even for a second family to utilise. The picturesque old town of Marazion, with its tiny shops, beautiful galleries, great pubs and restaurants is just waiting to be explored, and of course Mount’s Bay beckons with its endless stretch of fine white sand and mythical mount. A large, well-kept garden stretches around the house – ideal for al fresco dining after a long day spent exploring the local area. Don’t take our word for it though, make sure to book a stay at The View in Marazion and see for yourself!

LOCAL TRAVEL We discover the numerous travel options that we benefit from in the south west.

W

hilst Cornwall sometimes seems cut off from the rest of the country, we actually have fantastic access to travel right here in the south west. Newquay, Exeter and Bristol Airports and Bristol Avonmouth Port are the gateways to hundreds of holiday destinations, and 2019 is a great year for local departures from the south west. Award-winning independent travel agents, Newell's TRAVEL, have cultivated excellent relationships with leading UK tour operators since their humble beginnings in 1962. They now have nine retail oďŹƒces in Cornwall, and two in Devon, and their influence has attracted many tour operators to concentrate their resources in the region. It’s no longer necessary to make the long car journey to Heathrow, Birmingham or Manchester airports to start your holiday abroad as many tour operators now fly out of Cornwall Airport, Newquay. Destinations such as the Italian lakes, Iceland, Alicante in Spain and the Algarve in Portugal are all accessible with direct flights, and the East Coast of the United States is accessible via Dublin. You can even take a fly-cruise from Newquay to the Baltics, which includes a three-night break in Copenhagen with Princess Cruises.

| LIFESTYLE

Not to mention that Premier Holidays run regular flights to the Channel Islands from Exeter and in the spring of 2019 Superbreak continue their programme of Arctic Experience holidays to Iceland. Plus from Bristol Airport you can reach almost any worldwide destination imaginable. So, we’re really not as isolated as we used to be down here in Cornwall. Newell's TRAVEL have worked hard educating the tour operators to make them realise that local departures are a vital element in attracting holidaymakers in the region because after all, we don’t want to spend the first day of our holiday driving to distant airports; we want to hop on a flight and be sipping cocktails by lunchtime! So, having pushed for local departures, tour operators such as Fred. Olsen have now introduced free home-to-port transfers to encourage cruisers to sail from Southampton and similarly, Cruise & Maritime Voyages sailing from Avonmouth have done the same. Titan Travel has also introduced the same home pickup strategy, recognising the importance of the south west market. On a regional level, there are now flights from Newquay to London, Manchester and Scotland, so make sure to consider

a domestic flight before embarking on the long car journey! Thanks to the close working relationship between Newell's TRAVEL and the travel companies, Newell's TRAVEL are able to organise and host their annual Travel Show and attract over 40 leading tour operators time and time again. So, on Sunday 3rd March 2019 between 10.30am and 3.30pm Newell's TRAVEL will hold their 31st annual Travel Show at Truro College, which has first-class facilities, cutting edge technology and free parking. This is the largest travel show of its kind in the south west and the day is packed full of cinema presentations, on-the-day show offers and your chance to chat face to face with the tour operators on all things travel, whether abroad or at home. So, if you’re interested in finding the perfect travel company or want to be inspired to travel in the new year, then make sure to visit the Newell's TRAVEL website for more information.

TO THE PAST Feast your eyes on a collection of rarelybefore seen photos of Victorian Penwith, with Penlee House’s latest exhibition.

A

new exhibition at Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance, ‘Luminaries: Victorian Photographers in West Cornwall’ gives visitors the chance to gain an insight into the lives of the local community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries via rare images of west Penwith. Running until 16th March, the exhibition is a chance to showcase some of the Gibson & Sons Archive, which Penlee acquired in 2016. It will also include local professional photographers such as Robert Preston and the Richards Brothers, as well as amateur photographers such as William Colenso and John Branwell, son of the first owner of Penlee House. Penlee House Gallery & Museum Curator, Katie Herbert, tells us: “This is the largest photographic exhibition that we’ve ever staged, with 106 images on display throughout the ground floor galleries. The majority of them come from our extensive collection, ranging predominantly from the 1860s to the 1900s. A large number of these are from the Gibson Archive, which has been painstakingly scanned and researched by members of Penlee’s Photographic Research Group.” Katie continues: “West Cornwall is well known for being an artistic haven, from the Newlyn School artists of the late 19th century right through to the wealth of contemporary artists taking inspiration from the local landscape. We wanted to convey the fact that these early photographers were doing much the same thing – documenting the local community, landscape and the social history of the area. The Gibsons, especially, added an artistic element to the composition of their photographs and even devised an early form of Photoshop by drawing on the glass plates with white highlights of paint!” Luminaries gives a fascinating insight into the social history of west Cornwall during the Victorian era. Katie finishes: “It will be interesting to compare these images of Victorian towns and villages with how they look today and see just how much has – or hasn’t – changed in the past 100 to 150 years.”

The exhibition also features a short film on the Gibson family and is accompanied by a fully illustrated book about the Gibson collection. If you’d like to gain an insight into the history of Penwith and witness for yourself the dawn of the photographic age, be sure to head to Penlee House before 16th March.

A delicious new

subscription box!

Newly refurbished last year, The Red Lion in Blackwater has enjoyed resounding success since reopening. And it’s no wonder! This fantastic and family-friendly free house has fast become known for its warm welcomes and exceptional food, especially thanks to the team’s Sunday roasts. Pizza nights, held every Monday, have also proven popular, perfect after a dreary Monday when the last thing you want to do is cook! Indeed, since reopening, The Red Lion’s menu has done nothing but impress, catering to all tastes and requirements and including a variety of vegan and

Little piece of Cornwall has just unveiled its first ever subscription box – delivering a selection of Cornish goodies and allowing subscribers to enjoy a little piece of the ultimate lifestyle by the sea, wherever they are. The first box has a definite foodie slant, with some fantastic products from brands new to Cornwall and some that are centuries old! From Furniss Biscuits’ Original Cornish Fairings and Cornish made Biltong (a protein-rich snack made from Cornish beef), to Cornish tea and gluten free, vegan-friendly Get Fruity Bars, there’s something in this first box for everybody. The theme changes monthly too and we hear that for next month, it will be ‘Relaxing and Unwinding’. To read our full review, turn to page 77. Great food and an

atmosphere to boot Renowned amongst locals for its amazing food, The Lemon Arms in Mylor feels like a home from home. One customer has even gone as far as to say it’s like sitting in someone’s front room thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and regulars who all take the time to get to know one another. With Cornish delicacies such as fresh Fal bay lobster gracing the menu and mouthwatering specials keeping the menu fresh, we highly recommend a visit if you find yourself close to the typically Cornish village of Mylor. Some may say the pub specialises in fish dishes with staple favourites like paella and seafood tagliatelle occasionally appearing on the menu, but it’s

certainly what one would call an ‘all rounder’ with equally delicious pies, burgers and gammon steaks. For more information call 01326 37366 or visit www.lemonarms.co.uk

Take a journey of flavour at Xen, Truro This family-run noodle bar in the heart of Truro serves a varied selection of traditional Asian dishes, offering fantastic value for money. The menu will take you on a journey across the continent, from the aromatic spices of Thailand and Malaysia to the delicate flavours and textures of Japan. They also have authentic South Korean barbecue grills at selected tables, which delivers a whole new fun way of dining.

Everything is freshly prepared on site and made using fresh Asian produce, with no MSG and no artificial flavours. The array of colour and taste speaks volumes of the type of food Xen delivers – a positively healthy night out! So if you’re itching to go out for dinner but want to stay true to your New Year regime, why not try Xen Noodle Bar? For more information call 01872 222998 or visit www.xentruro.co.uk

SEA VIEWS

d o o f a e s d an We head to Catch at Mawgan Porth to try out its delicious sea-inspired menu.

é ì ABOVE Fresh seafood and scintillating ocean views await at Catch

F

ollowing an invigorating walk along Mawgan Porth, watching the surf crash onto shore, I headed back up the beach for my own taste of the sea at Catch Seafood Bar and Grill. Located right opposite the beach, Catch is in prime position to enjoy the ocean views and some delicious seafood, because there really is nothing like being right next to the sea when you delve into all it has to offer. Inside, the light and spacious restaurant has wooden floors, wicker chairs and a blue tiled feature wall adorned with bottles of wine that gives a cosy coastal feel to the dining space. It also welcomes dogs so you don't have to leave your furry friend behind if you're out on a walk and fancy a bite to eat. After scanning over the menu, I could see that this is definitely the place to go if you’re in the mood for seafood with traditional favourites such as lobster, crab and calamari alongside more adventurous fish dishes such as a Sri Lankan fish and seafood curry. Or, if you prefer to take your fill from the grill, there's the classic steak and chips, burgers and even surf and turf, providing the best of both worlds. But as I was only here for a light lunch, I decided on the Catch mussels served in

their signature marinière broth with a nice chunky slice of bread and wilted greens. It was a flavour sensation, only made better when enjoyed alongside a crisp glass of Viognier and a steamy latte. The staff were attentive without being intrusive and I could certainly envision spending a lovely summer afternoon here with friends and family after a day at the beach. However, even dining alone in the depths of winter was a wonderful experience; hearing the distant waves crash and watching people walk along the beach while eating made the time slip away and before I knew it, I’d mopped up the last of my mussels and was ready to leave, satisfied and certain I would be returning soon. Don’t take my word for it though, next time you find yourself strolling along Mawgan Porth beach make sure to visit Catch and discover the team’s delicious sea inspired menu for yourself.

Situated at the bottom of the high street, it’s in a good location with a bar and restaurant onsite, so you can couple your evening out with drinks and dinner if you really want to make the most of it. Upcoming shows include the Rock for Heroes concert, taking place on 8th March and performed by a live rock band with superb singers; featuring hits from Queen, David Bowie, Status Quo and many more, with a collection for Help For Heroes following the performance so you can give a little back to a big cause. Then on 14th March witness comedian Ardal O’Hanlon perform his acclaimed stand up show: ‘The Showing Off Must Go On.’ More rock and roll follows with Showaddywaddy In Concert Let’s Rock ‘N’ Roll on 15th March. They’ve sold more than 20 million records and have toured the world, so you know you’ll be in for a good night. Then the king of rock is brought back to life during the Elio Pace Presents Elvis Presley show on 19th March. Having enjoyed a hugely successful inaugural tour last year, Elio is touring again in selected theatres all across the UK. Coupled with some insightful and moving anecdotes about Elvis’ life and career, never before will you have seen or heard Elvis’ catalogue presented like this. For something a little different make sure to check out Twist & Shout The Ultimate 60’s Show, taking place on 5th May and featuring an all-star cast from the West End in a musical powerhouse of a show that starts with the explosion of Brit Pop in 1962, through to the era of Flower Power and Free Love of the late sixties. Sing and dance along with the West End cast to the music of The Beatles, Hermans, The Rolling Stones, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield and many more! So, if you want to make the most of the buzzing calendar of live events taking place at the Regal Theatre this year, then head to the theatre website and book your tickets now, because trust us – it’s worth it.

Duchy Hospital discusses the causes and risks associated with gallstones, as well as the best ways in which to treat them.

A

fter the traditional Christmas foodie favourites that we all enjoyed perhaps a little too much, some of us could be at risk of forming gallstones. We speak to Mr Michael Clarke, Specialist Consultant Upper GI Surgeon at Duchy Hospital, who explains what gallstones are, what symptoms they cause and how they can be treated. Gallstones are very common, with 10-15% of the population suffering from them. They are hard crystals, often made of cholesterol, that develop inside the gallbladder (a small organ that stores and secretes bile to aid fat digestion). Gallstones can cause attacks of severe upper abdominal pain, often precipitated by fatty food, which can last from minutes to hours. Serious complications can arise if left untreated, including jaundice (yellow discolouration of your eyes and skin), infection and bowel obstruction. Symptoms can also be confused with other medical conditions such as acid reflux, stomach ulcers and even heart attacks. So what are the risk factors for developing gallstones and can you prevent them? According to Mr Clarke, women are more likely to develop gallstones, with the most common risk factors including increasing age, family medical history, obesity and previous weight loss surgery. He continues: “Maintaining a healthy diet and weight are measures that may

reduce the risk of forming gallstones.” Fortunately, even if you do develop gallstones, they are easily detected by performing an ultrasound scan. Treatment is also fairly straight forward. In those people having symptoms or who have experienced a complication relating to the gallstones, surgery is considered the best option. Mr Clarke explains: “Surgery involves removing the whole gallbladder using keyhole surgery. Patients are routinely discharged on the same day and can return to work within two weeks”. There are few other treatment options available. Mr Clarke explains that medication is generally ineffective and only useful in those not fit for surgery or with very small stones. “There is also a high incidence of stones reforming.” Removing the gallbladder eliminates the risk of developing further stones, which is why it’s widely considered to be the best treatment. Life without a gallbladder usually causes no medical problems, with patients able eat a normal diet after surgery.

| ADVICE

MAKE IT A DATE According to research from Standard Life [1], the vast majority of those aged 45 or over are already dreaming about their retirement.

Source data: [1] The research was carried out online for Standard Life by Opinium. Sample size was 2,001 adults. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+). Fieldwork was undertaken in November 2017.

The value of pensions and investments and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

H

owever, only 8% have recently checked the retirement date on their pension plans to ensure they’re on track. The research shows that more than half have no clear idea about when they want to retire, and just one in ten have worked out how much income they’ll need when they do. Setting your retirement date on a pension plan matters. Some people will have set this date during their 20s or 30s, and a great deal will have changed since then, including their State Pension age and perhaps their career plans. It may seem like guesswork when you’re younger, but the date you set for retirement on a pension plan matters. It will often dictate how your money is invested and the communications you receive as you approach the date. It’s important to tell your pension company if your planned retirement date changes, or you simply want to take some of your pension without stopping working. Otherwise, you may not receive information and support about your pending retirement at the most helpful times, as they’ll be basing this on your out-of-date plans. De-risking investments Some investment options will start to move your pension savings into lower-risk investments as you get closer to retirement, but if you don’t have the right retirement date on your plan, you could be moving into these investments too early – thus missing out on higher investment returns – or too late, exposing your savings to unnecessary risks. Income for life If you’re planning to buy an annuity at retirement, which will guarantee you an income for the rest of your life, the amount of income you’ll get will depend on the size

of your pot (and annuity rates at that time), your age, your medical history and lifestyle. If you’d rather use your pension savings more flexibly, you can keep your money invested and take it as and when you need. You’re then responsible for making sure your savings last as long as you need them to. Work longer or retire earlier Reviewing your retirement date regularly makes sense, and most modern pension plans enable you to update it whenever you choose. It needn’t be the same as your State Pension age – you may want to work longer or retire earlier – but can’t normally be before age 55. Some people who plan to slow down or retire earlier use money from their private pension savings until they can start claiming State Pension. You just need to inform your pension company of your plans, even if they change in the future. Whatever you want out of retirement, Harris Begley can help you get there. Whether your retirement’s a long way off or just around the corner, having a clear idea of how to achieve your aims is important. To review your situation, contact financial advisors Matt Begley or Steve Rusga.

BEYOND We discover how Cornwall Hospice Care is doing more than ever to support those affected by terminal illness.

C é ABOVE Paul Brinsley, Cornwall Hospice Care's Chief Executive

ornish healthcare charity, Cornwall Hospice Care, is reporting a successful extension of its services to support terminally ill patients and their families and carers in the community. Over the past 12 months, the charity has launched two initiatives – Neighbourhood Hubs in Penzance and Wadebridge, and Open Houses in Bude, St Ives, Perranporth, Tintagel and Stenalees. The move was prompted by the changing needs of patients, many of whom want to be cared for at or near their homes. Gina Starnes, the charity’s Engagement Project Manager tells us: “Our two hospices in St Austell and Hayle will always be at the heart of our charity, but they provide acute care for very sick, terminally ill patients. What we wanted to do was extend our specialist care to those who are living with their illnesses and just need information and advice and some therapy support. Our Neighbourhood Hubs and Open Houses have been extremely successful and we’ve already supported an extra 300 patients in the community.” Community Engagement Nurse, Lollie Brewer, continues: “We’ve got so much valuable experience. Our aim is to provide information and peace of mind for patients who don’t need to come into our hospices. We’re also providing support at some GP surgeries, at community gatherings and events, and in the last six months, we’ve had conversations with 215 people who may need our support in the future. We’re also working with our charity shops and will soon be running focus groups to see how we can better support those with learning disabilities, the traveller communities and the homeless.” Paul Brinsley is the Chief Executive of Cornwall Hospice Care: “I’m delighted with the success of this extension to our care services in, and for, Cornwall. We know there’s a growing demand and our plan is to develop these initiatives, opening more where appropriate.”

This fantastic charity actively encourages patients to provide feedback. One patient who attended a recent Neighbourhood Hub session said: “I never thought I could access a high quality service like this so close to my house, and you’re not expected to pay anything. It’s unbelievable and I am so grateful.” Another commented: “My mood changes every time I come to the Hub. I feel listened to and important. I’m really lucky to have been given this opportunity.”
