rom potters to painters, jewellers to printmakers, Cornwall is a hub of artistic talent and this month we’re very excited to bring you a preview of the fabulous Open Studios Cornwall 2019. Artists across the Duchy will be throwing open the doors of their studios from 25th May to 2nd June and, from page 22, our guest editor, Jilly Easterby meets with one such artist, Ella Carty, who takes inspiration for her vibrant paintings from Cornwall’s vivid combination of colours and textures. We also look forward to one of Cornwall’s premier events, the Royal Cornwall Show, taking place from 6th until 8th June. Read more about some of this year’s exhibitors in our special supplement from page 109. As ever, the team here at Cornwall Living have been busy collating the very best in interior inspiration, finding the perfect properties and visiting some stunning places to stay, so all you need do is sit back, relax and read all about Cornwall’s finest. Bi-fold brilliance at Philip Whear

Bi-fold doors have been loved since as far back as Roman times. Today, they can be used externally or as internal room dividers, and made from a variety of materials. Most are glazed with wood, aluminium or uPVC frames and sashes. At Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories, the team has a exible range of bi fold doors that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but that have also been designed for performance. eing more thermally e cient than most others, they promise to keep your home warmer and your bills lower! Where glazed, these doors are made to receive highperformance 28mm double glazing, manufactured to conform to British standards, with toughened glass carrying the BS ‘kitemark’.

After providing interior services in Cornwall for 30 years, the Cotton Mills have taken the huge jump and built their own interiors showroom. Selling your home? Time to declutter! You’re going to have to pack up your life and move at some stage anyway, so why not get organised super early? The other upside is that it’ll allow potential buyers to easily imagine their own possessions in your property. Here are some of the ‘best practices’, as recommended by My Place in Cornwall. Find a home for every item, for instance, shoes on a shoe rack. Next, place and organise, don’t throw and forget. A potential buyer may open a drawer or a cupboard and the last thing you want is for stuff to fall out everywhere! Finally, assess how important your possessions are – if you haven’t thought about it or used it for over 12 months, do you need to keep it? For more great tips and advice on making your home market ready, get in touch with My Place in Cornwall. For more information call 01208 813874 or visit www.myplaceincornwall.co.uk

What do you need for a break away? Secluded coves, coast path walks, and rural beauty close to the fishing village of Mevagissey – so come to Bodrugan and stay in a comfy ensuite wooden cabin with views of 40 miles of coastline and an indoor heated swimming pool. Watch the stars and snuggle up by the firepit.

Bodmin Jail announces Charity of the Year Cornish healthcare charity, Cornwall Hospice Care, has been chosen as Bodmin Jail’s Charity of the Year! The 12-month corporate project will run until the end of March 2020, helping to raise the vital funds needed to provide specialist care to terminally ill patients across Cornwall. The charity’s Head of Fundraising, Oli Hoare, tells us: “We’re delighted to have been chosen by Bodmin Jail, a superb attraction based in the heart of the county we serve. We strive to offer new and different events to our supporters and Bodmin Jail provides us with a unique venue. In June this year, for instance, we will host our Murder Mystery Evening!” Martin Lyall, Bodmin Jail’s General Manager, says: “We’re very pleased to have chosen Cornwall Hospice Care. We look forward to working together to raise

awareness and funds for this valuable cause in what is a significant year for the jail with our 38 million pound investment.” For more information visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk or www.bodminjail.org

The time is now to plan

your new kitchen Planning a new kitchen can be daunting, but with an experienced design studio, the process can be broken down more simply, helping you balance the ergonomics and aesthetic. As one of the most complex and expensive home improvements you’re likely to undertake, it’s important not to rush key decisions. As a guide, Now Kitchens advise that a new kitchen requires at least three months. The design process, including choosing appliances, worktops, fittings and colour schemes, typically takes two to three weeks. As all Now Kitchens’ kitchens come pre-assembled, the order takes a further five to seven weeks to be manufactured. Then there’s the installation; a good uality fitter will take anytime between two and three weeks. ood fitters can often be booked up several months in advance, so if you’re looking to have a new kitchen by Christmas, starting late spring or early summer is a good idea! Bedding and patio season underway at Trevena Cross othing signifies spring at revena Cross like the inaugural journey of bedding and patio plants from nursery to garden centre. After weeks of growing in huge nursery tunnels, the first of thousands of bedding and patio packs begin to make the journey to the garden centre. It’s a lovely time of year with explosions of colour, one where the possibilities for planting in pots, troughs, beds and borders really open up. Often thought of as only ‘short term plantings’, Trevena Cross owner, Graham, contradicts such beliefs about bedding and patio plants. He tells us: “The best thing about them, particularly our huge range of patio-4 packs, is that they offer colour for such a long period of time; from spring right the way through to Christmas, sometimes longer. When you consider that your average shrub or perennial may only give you up to eight weeks of colour each year, at 77.5p a plant, these patio plants really are a great investment.” As well as ensuring good drainage holes in your container, Graham advises: “Use good

compost – we recommend Humax or Sylvagrow. Add a little slow release fertiliser and keep well-watered for a wonderful owering display all year long. To keep up with demand without relying on external suppliers, unlike many other garden centres, Trevena Cross has invested in a large transplanter machine, a compost mixer, as well as training for a dedicated nursery team, producing in-house the many thousands of bedding and patio packs that customers take home each spring. So, if you want to take some time out of your hectic schedule and spend more time with your family, then make sure to check out Kernow Adventure Park (KAP). We hear from owner Alex Sly who tells us: “The aim has always been to make our beautiful little corner of Cornwall as inclusive as possible. ome 291 artists, designers and makers from Lamorna to Launceston; St Buryan to Bude are preparing to throw open their studio doors and share their practice in this, the 15th year of Open Studios Cornwall. Between Saturday 25th May and Sunday 2nd June, sculptors, textile artists and botanical illustrators; printmakers, potters and painters will welcome visitors to refurbished fish cellars and converted cow sheds; Reading Rooms and Sunday Schools, shepherd’s huts and medieval manors to experience one of the UK’s most evocative art trails. “Whether creating work that responds to Cornwall – the interplay between shadow and sunlight; the textures of the tideline; the scars of its industrial past; the elemental power of the natural world – or to the transience of life and the potency of memory, the county’s creatives are ready to greet you,” explains Open Studios Cornwall Project Manager, Karen Raymond. Ella Carty is one such participant whose work responds to the colours and shapes of

Cornwall as well as remembrances past. “Whether it is a seascape, a garden or a boatyard, it is the shapes, the colours and the feeling they evoke that are transcribed and applied to the canvas in two-dimensional form,” explains Ella. “The vivid, luminous seaweed found on the Isles of Scilly, and the contrast of colours and textures to be found within the boatyards of Falmouth, Penryn and Gweek are an omnipresent source of inspiration for me, whether it is the shadow that a net casts on the side of a fishing boat, or the particular hue of a faded buoy.” This was not always the case, however. When love lured me to Cornwall five years ago, I had never lived by the sea before and seascapes wowed me,” Ella adds. “In fact, I painted seascapes all the time. Then I visited the ‘Late Turner – Painting Set Free’ exhibition at The Tate and his painterly, rich, semi abstracts with their sumptuous colour and deft handling of the paint stopped me in my tracks because they were so incredible and could never be beaten. This experience made me take a U-turn and try something else.”

BELOW Be sure to visit Ella during this year's Open Studios Cornwall

Ella was from a creative family – her sister is an illustrator, her mother is a talented seamstress; her grandmother and uncle are painters. She had been drawn to vibrant colours from a very young age, playing with the brightly decorated Masai Mara beads that her family had brought home from Nairobi upon their return to the UK when Ella was two. In her artist’s statement, Ella talks about ‘liquid pools of cobalt blue stubbed out by crimson or layers of spectre grey’ and her obsession with the ‘smeariness’ and smell of paint. Describing a recent visit to Nice, “the azure sky is etched on my mind: the geometric strips of azure blue above the buildings when you take a moment to look up from the narrow streets.” “As you go through your formal training at art college you cherry-pick elements from the work of other artists who inspire you – Patrick Heron, Howard Hodgkin, Matisse.” says Ella. “I constantly refer back to the skills I learned there, whether considering the principles of colour theory or the discipline of life drawing.” Photography had also played a part in Ella’s upbringing and this has clearly in uenced her creative process. “When my Dad got a job as a teacher in

Nairobi and moved out there with my Mum in the 1970s, he used a Canon camera to shoot black and white film so we have some fantastic slide shows about Kenya and the most beautiful collection of imagery,” Ella explains. “When I moved to Cornwall, I was given an old SLR camera and started taking lots of photographs to help me memorise what I saw. I used them as a reference point so that I could remember the intensity of a particular blue, for example. Sometimes, my partner encourages me to paint a photograph because it is so good but copying an image is never enough for me. I have to work from visual memory. I have to put the photographs away.” For Ella, it is all about the looking and the absorbing of things. About observation, sensitivity and felt experience. “Then some sort of magic happens,” she adds. “The red might change how the blue looks. You go into battle and have a conversation with the artwork as you are painting it. Things feed into your psyche without you realising it. Something that has been visually striking, that I have noticed and remembered, can suddenly appear in a painting, unconsciously. It is the surprise of the final outcome that excites me. Visit Ella during Open Studios Cornwall in Studio W21 in the Main Building at Krowji, Redruth. Ella’s work is also available to purchase at www.etsy.com/uk/shop/ EllaCarty

est Pill Cottages are thought to date back to the mid-to-late 18th century, built for shipwrights and formerly part of the Trelissick Estate (now National Trust owned). Pill Creek was used as a safe haven for boats during storms and opposite the cottage you’ll find the original th century uays used to export minerals. oday, the creek re ects its historic past attracting those seeking peace and tran uillity in a stunning waterside location. The property itself is a beautiful Grade II listed mid-terraced cottage, completely refurbished in 1997, set in an idyllic position above the peaceful waters of Pill Creek. A pathway leads through the pictures ue garden to the entrance porch, and there are two reception rooms either side of the hallway, both enjoying stunning creek views. The charming sitting room has a wood burner with slate hearth and surround thought to date back to the late Georgian era. The traditional dining room leads through to the recently fitted shaker style kitchen with a centrally placed AGA as a focal point, and the sun terrace can be accessed from the kitchen via steps leading from the rear patio. All principal rooms enjoy superb creek views and much of the accommodation retains many of the original features. The elevated west facing sun deck to the rear of the property creates a perfect place for sundowners and to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Arguably the biggest draw for this property is its close proximity to the water, with a privately owned foreshore accessed via the public footpath and at low tide a small beach is revealed which is perfect for keeping a tender or for working on boat repairs.

Limitless VIEWS

Make the most of uninterrupted views with the help of Vantage Balustrades.

W

e are blessed with spectacular coastal and country vistas at every turn in Cornwall, prompting more and more residential and holiday let owners to make the most of their views with features such as balconies, verandas and decks. In order to enhance a property’s connection with the outdoors in this way, there is an increasing focus on how people can maximise their view and avoid awkward posts or rails. This is where the relatively new innovation of frameless balustrade systems comes in, allowing you to appreciate uninterrupted views from the comfort of your sofa, deck chair or dining table. Vantage Balustrades, a frameless balustrade company based in mid Cornwall offers a made-to-measure system to suit your bespoke project – including Juliet balconies, verandas, decks, staircases, even around swimming pools. Using a sleek, engineered aluminium channel system, it’s possible to achieve a seamless look that maximises light and views, without the need for posts, rails or clamps. The channel can be powder coated with any colour to suit your scheme and is fixed to the base with bolts holding glass panels that are secured in place with plastic wedges. Sometimes customers are apprehensive about how safe this is, for example with young children leaning on the glass but the system is extremely durable; conforming to building regulations in a hardy design that’s just as reliable as posts or rails. Steve Burton, engineer and Managing Director of Vantage Balustrades is the brains behind this innovative new system: “My aim was to achieve a high end finish with easy installation,” Steve tells us. To this end, the company recently launched Solus, an exciting new design that can be easily installed by homeowners or your builder. “We can also recommend experienced local installers,” explains Steve. Vantage Balustrades is a small, local and friendly company with a vast knowledge of the industry. The team are at the end of the phone or email to offer design and technical advice from the word ‘go’ and love helping customers bring their projects to life.

f you want to find out more and talk about your ideas with the Vantage Balustrades team in person, then make sure to visit the Cornwall Home and Lifestyle Show where the company will be present for the second year running.

If you’ve got your eye on your kitchen and want to give it a refresh in time for summer then here’s some inspiration to kick-start your design ideas. etallack itchens owners, David and Jo, explain: “This season sees a return to high gloss dark blue and white colours for doors, or a more natural textured wood effect. he dark blue draws to mind days spent by the sea with the contrast of white offsetting the colour and creating a vibrant atmosphere. A trend for combining both colour and wood effect has also begun to emerge to create a fusion between the traditional and modern, meaning that this effect can be used in any style of property without compromising on the integrity of the building itself. personally find the on trend colour of dark blue and white highly amusing as this is what my mum had installed in her kitchen nearly years ago. o tells us, her forward thinking and interest in design must have rubbed off on me even at a young age – I’ll leave you to work out how old am

MASTERS OF

r e v o e k the ma Are you looking to create a low-maintenance, visually beautiful social space in your garden? Then you need look no further than a patio transformation from Cornwall’s resin experts, Oltco.

A

s the days grow longer, summer beckons and our gardens are awakening after the winter months, now is the ideal time to turn your thoughts to a garden makeover. Perhaps you have an area of garden that has become unruly and you’re not sure what best to do with it. Or, you want to spend more time in your garden relaxing than you do attending to its maintenance. Either way, a resin bound patio could be just the solution you are looking for. So, what exactly is resin bound? It’s a very clever coating that combines a blend of natural stone with a clear, UV-stable polyurethane resin. The two elements are combined in a force-action mix process to create a hardwearing and super lowmaintenance surface. As it’s porous and hand finished, you won’t suffer from any pooling or puddles and it’s also non-slip. The resulting surface is easily cleaned with a power hose or a sweep of a brush will sort out most debris. And the good news…resin bound naturally resists weeds giving you a super-smooth patio on which to relax and soak up some summer sun with a glass of something cold to hand.

ABOVE The only limit to the design of your surface is your imagination! BELOW Spend more time enjoying your garden than maintaining it!

surface that required less maintenance to the existing area, creating a seamless driveway and patio. As there was no other access to the property the whole job had to be completed in one day. r annel told us he finished driveway has resulted in numerous compliments from visitors and the work has undoubtedly transformed the external appearance of the property.” e added that ltco provided us with a solution that would meet our requirements and from the initial point of contact through to the aftercare, the team has always been there to answer our questions. The team were very friendly and carried out the work in an effective and e cient manner. We are extremely thankful for all of their hard work and we would recommend Oltco to anyone looking for a resin bound driveway." Oltco's team of highly-skilled installers complete driveways by hand with the attention to detail of true craftsmen. Not only does a resin bound surface offer versatility, low maintenance and a great aesthetic it’s also a very affordable option which, combined with ltco’s year guarantee, means you can give your garden a stunning makeover that is going to last for many years to come.

DID YOU KNOW? Oltco is celebrating its 15th Anniversary this year and has recently launched its new Recycle Bound Solution, creating surfaces from recycled plastic.

"

When it comes to the design and colour of a resin bound surface then the only limitation is your imagination. You don’t have to have straight lines – unless of course you want them! Your patio can follow organic curves and with a choice of aggregate colours you can use more than one, creating your own unique blend, even incorporating circles, patterns or writing within the surface Oltco offers a dual colour palette of either natural or contemporary gravels, both re ecting their Cornish roots, offering unique ready-mixed blends or, if you’re feeling adventurous, they can help you select your very own combination. Oltco suggests complementing your resin patio by planting some pretty owering bulbs such as sweet peas or lilys. This can be done in either a small border or pots, take very little care, and will offer a splash of spring and summer colour year on year. There is very little prep that needs to be done in order to lay a resin bound surface as it has the benefit of being able to be laid over the top of many existing surfaces. It’s not only weed resistant, but also dispels oil and can withstand both pedestrian and vehicular tra c. any customers across Cornwall have opted from both a resin bound drive as well as a patio. But don’t just take our word for it. We spoke to ltco customer, r annel, whose driveway and patio in Truro was transformed by the team. The brief was to provide an even

ometimes a tradition does not tell the whole story. Thus, here in the south west, we have long divided gems into precious and unusual types. And yet, these categories do not do justice to the larger group, which is characterised by staggering variety and beauty. The unusual gems group, which includes pink or green tourmaline, tanzanite and aquamarine, covers well over 100 types of stone, each with their own allure and associations. There is so much to discover, so why not start here, with a gorgeous collection from Michael Spiers?

Green Tourmaline and Diamond Ring

£4,950

The sapphire is a beautiful, sparkling and durable gem, ideal for daily wear. Contrary to popular belief, sapphires are not only available in a blue colour and this exquisite, rare green sapphire is a fine example. Displayed in the centre of this triple cluster ring with baguette cut diamonds anked either side, surrounded by brilliant cut diamonds.

Strikingly beautiful, this sensational ring is a bold and distinctive alternative to a classic diamond ring. REACH YOUR LETTING

l a i t n e t po

With Cornwall’s staycation market only set to grow, we ask George at Cornish Traditional Cottages for his top holiday home tips.

O

nce your property is ‘out there’, George explains: “enquiries should start to come in. Although not all of them will result in a booking, you should treat them all as potential guests. This means responding professionally and promptly. Always aim for a maximum of a few hours, same day if you can. Go that extra mile by offering extra information, or try to accommodate people by suggesting alternative arrangements if your property can’t cater for them on their chosen dates.” The next key moment is when your guests arrive. “You may like to organise a personal meet-and-greet. This gives you the chance to get to know them, introduce them to your holiday home and answer any questions in person. If this isn’t practical or desirable, make sure you’ve provided clear instructions to make the arrival process as simple as possible.” Next, it’s time to get their feedback. “This is crucial. You could keep a guestbook in a clearly visible place and add a note to the front cover asking guests to write their comments. Afterwards, type them out and include them in an email to your guest, asking for permission to use it on your website and/ or marketing material.” As much as you’d love to read glowing comments from start to finish, the reality is that reviews rarely rave all the time, so it’s important to know how to respond. “Check

regularly for new reviews and respond as soon as you can. Always respond to a review, no matter how glowing (or otherwise) it is, and always start by thanking the reviewer.” He also recommends keeping the reply concise, while addressing all points. “Negative comments should be taken with a pinch of salt,” stresses George. “Remember, this isn’t about you; it’s about a holiday home. Give yourself a day before replying to negative reviews, to stop feeling angry or hurt, and use the feedback to your advantage. Amend faults and improve on shortcomings so that future guests benefit, then let them know what you’ve done.” Cornish Traditional Cottages have a deep wealth of knowledge when it comes to making holiday home rentals a success, so if you’re just starting out or are looking for advice to improve, why not give George and the team a call?

NOW’S THE TIME! Looking for a holiday home in Cornwall? We may have the answer! Introducing St Ives Holiday Village, from John Fowler Holidays.

N

estled amongst 100 acres of woodland just outside of St Ives, at John Fowler St Ives Holiday Village, you’ll find that the rural peace and quiet on offer here lends itself perfectly to utter relaxation, while the location means you’re perfectly set for discovering nearby t ves and ayle, as well as further afield to the delights of west Penwith and beyond! Family run and owned for the last 65 years with lettings at its heart, John Fowler’s ethos has always been to create holiday parks in stunning locations so that visitors have a lovely place to stay and use as a base to explore their surroundings. Catching up with John Fowler Holidays’ Group Sales Manager, Mark Johnson, we learn that the St Ives park is currently undergoing a multi-million pound investment. “This has seen us take away a section of old chalets each year and replace them with brand new lodges, with the last phase being completed early this year.” With so much having been invested in the park, and with St Ives only gaining in popularity as more and more Brits look to home soil for their annual holiday (particularly after last summer!), these lodges enjoy consistent occupancy, making the final phase of lodges an excellent investment opportunity. Indeed, as Mark

puts it: “Demand is always strong. We only have a limited number available for sale, and these will be the last available at this site!” “This was a lovely park, even without the new investment! Anyone purchasing with a view to sub-letting should know that St Ives lets particularly well, thanks to its fantastic location. As an owner, you’ll have the option to retain full usage, sub-let enough weeks to cover your site fees, or sub-let the majority of weeks, which can go some way to recouping part of your investment.” How you manage your lodge is versatile too, whether you decide to do it yourself, let the John Fowler team take care of it for you, or a bit of both. This means that your dream of owning a Cornish holiday home could be closer to reality than you think! So if you’ve been on the lookout for a holiday home investment, in a prime location to enjoy one of Cornwall’s most highly-coveted destinations and therefore with excellent sub-letting opportunities, a trip to see John Fowler Holiday Parks’ St Ives Holiday Village comes highly recommended!

et on the beautiful Roseland peninsula in the idyllic fishermen’s village of Portloe, Kerbenetty is a hidden gem for holidaymakers. Perched overlooking the crystal clear waters of Portloe harbour; the sun-drenched terrace provides spectacular ocean views where you can while away your morning sipping coffee and watching boats lazily making their way out to sea. “When you can sit on the terrace and enjoy the view. Why go anywhere else?” Says cottage owner Caroline Lamb. Then when you are ready for something a little more active, head down to the small sandy beach and discover the complex ecosystems that lie captured in the rock pools at low tide, or take a refreshing dip in the clear blue waters for an invigorating start to the day. Thanks to its location in the heart of Portloe, you have easy access to everything the village has to offer with a small local pub just up the road, offering a traditional fishing village feel. When on holiday in Portloe, Caroline’s Granny spotted Kerbenetty whilst walking along the coast path and instantly fell in love; she contacted the owner and insisted that if they were to ever sell the property, she would buy it. In 1958 she became the proud owner of the beautiful home, which remains in the family today, and now the cottage is available for you to fall in love with too.

Kerbenetty is let with Cornish Cottage Holidays, allowing Caroline to take advantage of the many owner perks. They also offer a managed service option, which means owners who opt for this don't need to be involved in the day-to-day running of the property as the Cornish Cottage Holidays team ensure that it's well maintained and ready for its next guests. Not to mention Caroline's property is adored by its guests, who often come back year after year. And it’s no wonder, considering it’s the perfect cottage for a dream Cornish coastal break.

With this in mind, a programme of rejuvenating wellbeing activities are now on offer for those staying at Polurrian on the Lizard. Guests will love exploring the stunning coastal paths that lead right from the Polurrian’s doorstep, and why wouldn’t you want to relax on the hotel’s own beach? The clifftop tennis court and seasonal outdoor pool are available for all guests. In addition, kayaking, coasteering, paddle boarding and surfing can also be en oyed as part of your stay, with help from the team at Lizard Adventure!

ucked away on the sheltered side of the Lizard peninsula lies Kestle Barton – a hidden gem that, to many, remains a well-kept secret. Travel down woodland roads, alongside the southerly, sun-dappled creeks of the Helford river and seek out this idyllic farmstead. Surrounded by footpaths, meadows and quiet riverside beaches, whether you’re venturing here as a day visit or as a base for your Lizard break, prepare to fall in love with this beautiful pocket of Cornwall. Pull into the gates and discover the beautifully renovated barns and cottages that form this historic farmstead. Breathe in the fresh air, perfumed by the wild ower meadows that make up the gardens, and take the time to discover the work of local and international artists in the Kestle Barton Art Gallery. The buildings, which date back to the 16th century, have had many original features restored, winning awards for their architectural design. From Kestle Barton, stroll past the lush green field on the northwest side of the hamlet, step over a gentle stream and enter the woodland below, before reaching the tiny village of Helford. Here you’ll find a combined delicatessen, bakery and shop, plus The Shipwrights Arms, all just a ten-minute walk away. Why not bring

a torch and walk back in the dark – an unforgettable experience! The farmstead is nestled on the banks of Frenchman’s Creek – made famous by Daphne du Maurier’s eponymous novel – and only slightly further afield you’ll find superb sailing waters, stunning clifftops, pristine beaches and sweeping heathland, all within a 15-minute drive. Forever Cornwall offers a range of holiday accommodation here, with three contemporary barn conversions and two cottages sleeping between two and eight. Some are even dog friendly, meaning your furry friend needn’t miss out on your escape to the countryside! If you’re looking for an immersive, ‘off the beaten track’ holiday experience, then Kestle Barton may just be it. To book or to find out more, be sure to contact the team at Forever Cornwall.

T

he row of buildings that house the school are steeped in history. You may already know of the Porthmeor Studios as a creative sanctuary for the colony of artists drawn to the shimmering light of St Ives over the past century, and that previous tenants here have included Patrick Heron, Ben Nicholson and Sir Francis Bacon. What you may not know is that, nestled above the studios and the salty cellars, where fishermen still mend their nets, sits a friendly community that has given both locals and visitors from across the country a space in which to learn and create for the past 80 years. With a team of professional tutors and a view that has inspired generations, St Ives School of Painting is a welcoming hub of inspiration for anyone looking to awaken their creativity; the perfect escape from everyday life, allowing you to focus on nothing but the art of making. The school offers a wealth of possibilities, with over a hundred short courses throughout the year with inspiring titles such as Ocean and Abstraction, Discover Painting, Expressive Watercolour and Contemporary Landscape. All the materials are provided too, so you needn’t bring anything with you. Beginners are always welcome and with small class sizes, there’s plenty of one-to-one

time with your tutor, meaning you can progress at your own pace. “I was a total beginner,” recalls student Jose Mejia, “I was literally afraid of oil painting. The tutor opened the door to set free my imagination and produce works I never dreamed possible.” Jo Baker, a student on the ‘Where Sea Meets Land’ course agrees, explaining: “As a newcomer to oil painting I’ve learned a lot. The teaching is excellent and my tutor has been very patient and informative. And, of course, St Ives is an incredibly inspirational place to work and learn.” Over the summer months, half-day workshops give you a taster version of the two to five day courses and are a relaxing way to experiment with different media and have fun. As participant Helen Rutherford puts it: “If you’re looking for a workshop that will develop your confidence, skills and knowledge with warmth and good humour, then look no further.” To tap into your creative side and take part in one of the school’s workshops or classes, be sure to give the team a call!

mélange quality style and service

Not Just Made In Britain,

Made In Cornwall!

When we started CREAM CORNWALL back in 2012, we had a vision for our brand but no money, so we had to make a lot of products ourselves. Luckily we both have a practical background in textiles, so we did a lot of screen printing, making lampshades, pouring candles and making diffusers. The only thing we couldn’t do was decorate and fire our bone china, but we did think about buying a kiln! We are passionate about getting our products made in Cornwall and if we can’t get it made here, then we always look for a manufacturer in the UK. We opened our first store in Falmouth in 2016 & our second one in St Ives in 2018 where you can see the beauty & quality of all our fantastic products. So please call in to take a look and buy something great, that’s made in Britain!

We discover Vincent Basham’s incredible artwork, capturing Cornwall’s coastline with a masterstroke.

I

t never ceases to amaze when an artist can capture a moment so accurately, bringing to life the colours and tones of the world even more vividly than a photograph. Vincent Basham is one such artist, unbelievably talented, his seascape oil paintings accentuate the stunning colours of Cornwall’s coastline, manipulating paints to create a real-life effect, with light radiating out of his paintings and drawing the observer in. We hear a bit about Vincent’s history. He tells us: “I was a born in Maldon, Essex and was educated at Thurstable School in Tiptree where my paintings were first exhibited as a young teenager, but actually I was essentially self-taught, and painting has always been what I love to do most.” More recently his work has been displayed in prestigious galleries in London, Essex, Suffolk and in the south west. When he was invited to attend a royal visit from HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall in Essex, his work was being displayed among other local artists in a public house and he was able to speak to the royals in person about his paintings, and about his time living in Cornwall, a resounding moment for him. After living in Cornwall in his early twenties, Vincent developed a keen passion for painting seascapes, capturing the colours and movements of the sea with a masterstroke. He has recently moved back to the Duchy with his partner Jane and their dog Stella to the town of Wadebridge, where he has a purpose-built studio adjacent to his home. Boasting views

over the River Camel and the Camel Trail, it’s the perfect spot to seek inspiration and continue to produce breath-taking paintings. Check out his seascape art exhibition being displayed at the Padstow Institute this summer from 18th to 23rd May, 4th to 9th June and 23rd to 27th September and look out for his mesmerising depictions of sunsets. Some of our favourites within his collection (as seen on his website) are: ‘Evening Embers’ and ‘Summer Surf.’ We also love the scene of people strolling along the beach at Polzeath as the sun breaks through the clouds in ‘Winter Sun Polzeath’ as it’s rare for incent to include figures within his paintings, and the spill of light over the cliffs is absolutely beautiful.

DID YOU KNOW? Powerful electric motors let you explore more, ride further and faster without even breaking a sweat. Electric Assist makes trike riding even more accessible and inclusive for all kinds of cyclists!

e catch up with Phil, from ICE’s Design and Marketing team, to find out more about the world of recumbent cycling. ICE has led the trike industry since 1999, making, designing, and pioneering in Falmouth, Cornwall most of what you’ll see in today’s recumbent industry. ut why ride recumbent trikes? Well, hil explains, hey are a relaxed, e cient, stable, fun and very comfortable way to cycle iding a trike, for someone who has not ridden a bike or thought they never could again, can really change their lives. n fact, some test riders get quite emotional when they realise they can ride again. New riders always return from a test ride with a huge smile on their face.” With a trike, hil continues here’s less impact on your neck, back, shoulders and, most importantly, your bottom, as there is no narrow saddle involved. n a regular bike you need padded shorts, gel seats and you’ll still end up walking like a cowboy at the end of your ride ot so with our

ased in the village of St Agnes on the rugged north Cornish coast, The Cornish Pizza Company places a keen focus on quality ingredients and, most importantly, freshness. We catch up with owners Tim and Fiona Barton, who tell us: “We love everything about Cornwall, especially the provenance of food here. We work closely with a number of local producers, sourcing Cornish cheeses, Cornish veg and charcuterie from Duchy Charcuterie; we even forage our own wild seasonal ingredients!” But it’s not just the toppings that set their artisan pizzas apart. As Tim tells us: “It’s got to start with a good base; well developed dough from good quality, stone-ground organic our, allowed to prove slowly and to develop avour. long fermentation of over hours makes a much more digestible, better tasting pizza.” Indeed, even as we speak to Tim, he tells us that he’s in the midst of making the next batch! With such a fantastic array of Cornish ingredients available, Tim tells us: “We regularly update our specials, which allows us to get really creative with our seasonal ingredients.” He points us to the recent special

of Cornish venison bresaola cured in Cornish gin, with locally foraged wild garlic and nettle pesto. In Tim's words, this one was “absolutely delicious!” As if all this wasn’t enough, we learn that it’s not just the pizza menu that promises to spoil you for choice. Looking to the year ahead, Tim continues: “We’re planning to install a further two beer lines, meaning we’ll be able to offer four Cornish beers at a time, as well as wine and prosecco by the glass. We’ll also be continuing our ‘Meet the Brewer’ evenings, showcasing some of the best independent microbreweries in Cornwall.” The next event will introduce Pipeline Brewing Company from St Agnes, offering guests the chance to sample their selection of small-batch crafted beers alongside the team’s delicious pizza menu. With a focus on fresh, local and authentic ingredients and an ever-changing specials board that promises something new every time you visit, if you’re a discerning foodie in search of something a little different on Cornwall’s rugged north coast, a trip to The Cornish Pizza Company comes highly recommended!

Old fashioned

AND FABULOUS With tempting menus and fabulous new accommodation, The Rod and Line has no need to fish for compliments!

T

he Rod and Line is one of those little gems hidden away in the small village of Tideford in east Cornwall. It’s an inn with beautiful luxury accommodation and the old world charm of a longstanding, time-honoured pub. Inside, you’ll find an exciting menu built from the freshest seasonal, locally-sourced produce, but it’s really the chefs’ crab dishes, including the delicious Sweet Chilli Crab Claws, which have given The Rod and Line its foodie fame. Last year, the inn’s accommodation enjoyed a fabulous makeover before opening again at the end of the summer. The beautifully converted barn, called An Skiber, contains three luxury suites. he new design re ects the eclectic and luxurious tastes of owners Mike and Jo Lake-Jones, a great example being the wooden oor running through the entire upstairs of the barn. This was painstakingly removed by hand from an old pub in Plymouth, before being lovingly restored and laid with care. It really is a standout feature! he bathrooms, with oor to ceiling talian porcelain tiles and the contrast of black fittings, en oy a distinct sense of grandeur, while the accommodation’s lighting has been reclaimed from several types of old boat, lining the corridors and wall spaces as if they

were designed to be there. It’s fair to say that no expense has been spared with the soft furnishings and finer touches either, such as the leather bound Cornish room folders, which, containing stories of each room’s name sake, make for an interesting read. All heated by a bio-mass boiler, which will eventually run the water for the rest of the inn, not only is the new accommodation both stylish and cosy, it’s also eco-friendly. What’s more, Mike and Jo are passionate supporters of local music and up and coming artists, also raising money every year for Cornwall Air Ambulance and Children’s Hospice. In fact, they managed a whopping £22,500 in one night last year! Offering a delectable menu of fresh Cornish produce and locally-caught seafood, as well as a great range of real Cornish ales, a trip to The Rod and Line this spring comes highly recommended. It’s dog friendly too, so why not pop in with your pooch after an afternoon spent exploring this beautiful pocket of Cornwall?

CORNWALL’S INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE Discover the Duchy’s historic industrial past with The Cornish Bed Company who, to this day, continue to utilise traditional techniques.

T

he Cornish Bed Company, located in the heart of Cornwall, rejects soulless mass production, choosing instead to embrace the county’s long industrial heritage. Cornwall is steeped in a rich industrial history, which dates back as far as the medieval period, when its mineral resources were first exploited. he county thrived in the 18th and 19th centuries as a business powerhouse in metal mining, quarrying and china clay production. Diverse artisanal skills and traditional crafting techniques arose around the raw materials that were prevalent across the region and the skills developed and honed by Cornish craftsmen have been passed down from generation to generation, and are still in use around Cornwall today. Just down the road from China clay country and the Cornish ‘Alps’, is the Cornish Bed Company, a manufacturer of bespoke beds that pays homage to the craftsmanship of its Victorian forefathers. Located in an old railway depot formally used for the transportation of mining materials, the company’s roots are steeped in history and all things Victorian, from the

foundry it operates from, to the artisan beds it produces. Its foundry in Par is one of the last in the country to cast iron, brass, and nickel beds by hand using traditional techni ues. he company embraces Cornwall’s industrial heritage and leads the charge against mass production to offer customers something more personal that will last a lifetime. irector at he Cornish ed Company, Garry Smith, tells us: “We champion authenticity and craftsmanship – it really is as far from the production line as you could get. It’s great to be able to add to the county’s long industrial heritage. he manufacturing process for Victorian bed frames in the 19th century used the same hand pouring and intricate polishing methods that we employ today. We are producing antiques for the future, heirlooms and pieces of workmanship that will last for many generations.” When you visit he Cornish ed Company’s foundry you have the opportunity to witness this time-honoured manufacturing process first hand. ts iron beds have a modest birth, beginning life as lengths of seamless tubes which are laid across a base of set moulds. Cornwall proceeds to use a ladle to spoon molten zinc, which reaches temperatures of 470°C, from the nearby furnace, pouring it into the mould cavities. As it cools, the zinc solidifies and is knocked free. At this stage, a signature self-locking system is used to attach the side rails to the head and foot of the bed, guaranteeing longevity. An individual serial number is then stamped onto the knuckle, providing a mark of authenticity for each customer. he bed frame is then degreased by hand before powder coating is applied using an electrostatic gun, and cured in an oven reaching temperatures of C. he baked skin of paint is thicker and more durable than its conventional counterpart, and extremely unlikely to chip. We’re confident that we produce some of the finest beds found anywhere and we’re proud that we do it all in Cornwall,” arry explains. Like the Cornish mining diaspora, Cornish beds can be found anywhere in the world. From the urban scenes of Minneapolis in America, to the tranquil setting of the Scottish Highlands, each bespoke bed showcases the work of Cornwall’s industrial

forefathers to a global audience. he Cornish ed Company is not alone either. As our lives become increasingly virtual, there’s now a growing awareness of provenance and, as a result, Cornwall is now filled with artisan businesses ying the ag for sustainability and building items using traditional techniques. Companies such as kin int ighting and tter urfboards have oined he Cornish ed Company in championing Cornwall’s long and successful industrial heritage. ou can find he Cornish ed Company at he oyal Cornwall how this year, where they will be exhibiting from th until th une.

The intra-oral scanner is a brand new technology that scans your mouth so you don’t have to have moulds or impressions done, making it extremely useful for treating patients with a sensitive gag re ex. t s useful when having crowns, bridges, whitening trays, implants or anything else that needs an impression. t can also create a before and after’ image so that you can see a visual representation of how your new smile will look, giving you peace of mind and allowing you to have a complete understanding of what your end result will be like. The practice has also installed a CBCT scanner, making it one of only a handful of practices in the UK to offer this facility. This innovative new technology is used to produce incredibly accurate and detailed images, which are extremely beneficial in detecting and diagnosing oral health problems and are an excellent aid in planning a course of treatment. An example of how the technology helps is that it allows dentists to see exactly where to place implants in the mouth. ndeed, it is so useful that Wadebridge ental often receive referrals from other practices

that don’t have the equipment or facilities! To discover more make sure to visit the Wadebridge ental team at the oyal Cornwall Show this year where the intra-oral scanner will be displayed, and be available to scan your mouth allowing you to see the innovative technology first hand. However, it’s not all about your smile. Wadebridge Dental are also experts in facial aesthetics and offer a range of skincare, otox, fillers, non surgical facelifts and an eight-point facelift with complimentary consultations, so you can talk to the experts and discuss what will work best for you. The combination of both dental treatments and facial aesthetics means that Wadebridge ental provide an all encompassing service to help you look and feel your best. So, if you want to smile more brightly this year or make your skin glow with radiance then get in touch with Wadebridge ental today. DO YOU WISH YOU HAD A BETTER SMILE? WE CAN HELP. How often have you looked in the mirror, wishing you had a better smile? Few of us have naturally perfect teeth, but with the help of the experienced team at Pure Dental Health we can help create a natural healthy smile to be proud of. With this knowledge we can deliver your treatment using the most conservative and minimally invasive methods. Helping to preserve and protect your teeth for the rest of your life, whilst creating your new smile. Giving you your confidence back to smile, laugh and know you are in safe hands.

FREE HAND BONDING Composite resin filling material can be used to replace the broken edge of a tooth, improve proportions and form of teeth, and can be used to redesign your whole smile. It is minimally invasive as the material is applied directly to the tooth surface. This technique can be used to address your concerns over the appearance of your teeth often in just a single visit, which in turn offers significant financial savings over conventional porcelain veneers.

MERCURY FREE DENTISTRY We believe that teeth should look like teeth no matter where they are in your mouth. We use tooth coloured materials that are bonded into place providing beautiful aesthetics and help to straighten the teeth. We are proud to say we have been mercury free since new ownership in 2015.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY (SMILE IN A DAY)HAVE HAD Enlighten’s guaranteed In In suitable patients we can replace a conventional removable denture with a fixed restoration in just one day! We use a revolutionary approach that has radically changed the replacement of lost teeth. We can now remove failing teeth, place new implants and provide a fixed full restoration in a single day. This approach to dental treatment allows you to rediscover the feeling of being able to smile with confidence and it allows you to begin to enjoy eating again. The benefits of this type of treatment includes shorter treatment times and lower costs.

ohnny Lawrence is a personal trainer based in Perranwell who strives to help his clients make the changes necessary to achieve a more balanced lifestyle. With a private gym space located within the grounds of his home and more than 12 years’ experience in personal training, Johnny provides a tailored service that revolves around his clients’ lifestyle and how they can put together a programme that most suits their needs and that is, above all, sustainable. “I consider myself a people centred trainer,” explains Johnny, “my whole philosophy is if I can understand the person and the way that they live and behave then we can start putting in place a programme that makes it easier to lose weight rather than harder.” he benefits of having a private training facility are easy to imagine; it means that you have complete autonomy of all the exercise machines, so no hanging around waiting for them to be free; you’re not tied to gym times or memberships and you can focus on your programme with help from an experienced health professional dedicated to working with you. Helen Tite describes what her experience training with Johnny has been like. “I’m

a trainer myself and wanted to work with someone I could trust and someone who could guide me – I was going through health problems at the time so needed that assurance,” Helen explains. “From the offset it was clear that Johnny is an incredibly kind and approachable person, and I immediately knew that I could train with him in confidence, and with confidence too.

FROM SANCTUARY Head to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, where you can meet the rescued seal pups and hear their individual stories.

T

he Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek rescues and rehabilitates over 70 seal pups every season. As we approach the end of pupping season, it’s fair to say that it’s been another busy one for the Rescue and Rehabilitation team! The seal pupping season is from September until March, which unfortunately is also the period of time in the UK when we receive the worst storms and roughest seas. This means seal pups have a lot to contend with during the early stages of their lives. A pup may need to come to the sanctuary for a variety of reasons. It could be malnourishment, that it’s been separated from its mother too early or been found entangled in marine litter. This season, a very special pup named Hope unfortunately found herself at the sanctuary due to a serious wound on her neck – the result of marine litter entanglement. Hope was rescued from Gunwalloe beach by Zoe, a member of the sanctuary’s Rescue Team, after being alerted by a member of the public who was concerned about the pup’s welfare. Thankfully, after going through rehabilitation at the sanctuary, Hope’s wound healed nicely and she was released back into the wild in March. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary relies heavily on members of the public getting in touch

when they discover a seal in trouble, and without this vital help the team would not be able to do their pup rehabilitation work every year. This year, the sanctuary launched its brand new beach signage around local beaches in Cornwall. The signage was made in collaboration with several charities and organisations, as a guide for the public when out and about on the beaches. It includes what to do if they come across a seal, as well as who to call and some tips on how to protect local wildlife and look after our beaches. Supplied and maintained by the sanctuary, the signage is available for any local beach that would like one installed. Simply call the sanctuary and the team will be happy to organise the rest! Although pup season is now coming to an end, the sanctuary still has lots of rescued pups for you to meet as they make their recovery, as well as the resident animals, each with their own amazing rescue story and individual character.

Become a New Heli Hero for Cornwall Air Ambulance and help save lives around the Duchy.

DON’T MISS OUT! Since launching the New Heli Heroes campaign, Cornwall Air Ambulance has been inundated with requests and so far, over 200 names will appear on the new helicopter. With only a limited number available, don’t miss the chance to fly with them on every lifesaving mission!

ornwall Air Ambulance is giving supporters the chance to have their name on the new helicopter as part of its ‘New Heli Hero’ scheme. The life-saving charity is offering a limited number of places on the new AW169 air ambulance. For a minimum donation of £100 your name will feature on the base of the aircraft as it goes to the aid of seriously sick and injured patients across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. As a New Heli Hero, supporters will also receive a certificate and see their name on a dedicated board, which will take pride of place at Cornwall Air Ambulance headquarters in Newquay. The fundraising scheme is part of the £2.5m New Heli Appeal to bring a new air ambulance to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by April 2020. Whether it’s your name or a loved one’s, become a New Heli Hero and you’ll be helping to save more time and more lives, with a bigger and faster helicopter. Thomas Hennessy Jones, Critical Care Paramedic tells us: “We have a really exciting opportunity for our supporters to play a part in every mission that we y by becoming a New Heli Hero. With your

name on the helicopter you’ll y alongside the crew to the roads, the cliffs and the homes of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, we want to reach more people and we want to save more lives and we really need to get everyone on board.” You can secure a name place for a minimum donation of £100. Places are limited and will be registered on a first come first served basis. my ichards, ew Heli Appeal Manager tells us: “Become a ew eli ero and you’ll play a significant role in bringing a new air ambulance to the county which will serve the people of Cornwall for the next 20 years.” So, if you want to be part of the collaborative effort to bring a new helicopter to Cornwall then make sure to get in touch and discover more on the Cornwall Air Ambulance website.
