his month, to get you in the mood for the warmer months ahead, from walking to wakeboarding, cycling to swimming, we take a look at some of the best outdoor adventure companies in Cornwall. Whether it’s thrills and spills you’re after, or a delicious coffee by the sea while the kids set to making a splash, Cornwall has something to get the whole family outdoors. On page 87, we celebrate one of ritain’s finest foodie traditions, introducing you to just a few of our favourite Cornish afternoon tea experiences. As usual, we also take a look at the works available from some of the county’s finest artists and galleries (page 72), before revealing some of the Duchy’s best stays by the sea (page 76). Then, on page 80, we have some incredible prizes up for grabs, including a Cornish break or two! All of this, plus our usual array of luxury property, interior ideas and foodie delights – in short, everything you need to make the most of Cornwall as we look forward to the season ahead.

What does travelling
mean for you?
We catch up with Wanderlust Travel Agent, Tina Nottle, who tells us: “Last year I visited Cambodia. I absolutely loved it! They have so little compared to us, yet they find joy in everything, embracing each day with unashamed glee. While standing under a gushing waterfall, I felt a massive sense of freedom. I thought: ‘How did a girl from a tiny Cornish village get to be standing under a waterfall in a Cambodian jungle?’ If there’s somewhere you have dreamt of visiting, it’s possible, travel is all-inclusive, and you set your own limitations! Tina’s aim is to fulfil people’s dreams and enable them to have unforgettable experiences just like this.

News & views Lighting that suits your mood with Holdcroft Lighting You may have heard about sunlight making you happier and reducing symptoms of depression, but did you know that the same can be said for artificial light With variations of light heightening or lowering emotions, even going as far as affecting the way we eat. And in regards to how light affects eating speed, in general, we eat slower and consume less food in restaurants with softer, dimmer lighting; researchers believe this is because softer lighting may make us less alert and more relaxed. We hear from Holdcroft Lighting owner Haley who tells us: “Here at Holdcroft Lighting, we can arrange a visit to your home or business to help you design the perfect lighting for you and your emotions.”

Selling your home? Presentation is key! According to the team at My Place in Cornwall, whilst the property you are selling might be your current home, potential buyers are looking at it as though it’s theirs. Your familiarity with your property could be your downfall when it comes to overlooking the basics. This is why the My Place team suggest walking through your property as though you’ve never been there before. Look at everything, from carpets to walls, and be super critical. Spring is the time to get outside and trim the lawn, weed the garden and sweep the driveway. Inside – remove stains and scuffs from carpets and walls, clean the windows and put away those outdated accessories.
Whilst you needn’t replace everything with new, when your home looks clean, tidy and stain-free, you’re removing factors that a buyer may find off-putting. For more information call 01208 813874 or visit www.myplaceincornwall.co.uk

The team at Merchants and Makers are passionate about the fabrics they sell and the bespoke soft furnishings that they create. We ask if they have any tips to help manage the seasonal transition from winter to summer and how to use this time to look after our curtains. We create a lot of hand-finished, interlined curtains which are fabulous during the winter months – cosy and cocooning as they shut out the winter cold,” says Merchant and Makers Partner, Alan. However, we’re seeing a new seasonal trend where heavy drapes in reception rooms are swapped for light filtering sheers during the summer months, making the most of the light that we’ve craved all winter. This has a practical element too, as it provides an opportunity to refresh winter curtains with airing, cleaning and any repairs. It also helps reduce sun damage… so it’s a win-win!” For more information call 01566 785763 or visit www.merchantsandmakers.co.uk

Discover how watersports
can benefit your mental health The benefits of throwing yourself into new activities, pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and meeting new people are countless. Water sports, especially, have an incredible influence on mental health. Embracing the lesser-known element of water and overcoming any fears you may have, quite simply, feels amazing. Kernow Adventure Park owner, Alex Sly, has experienced the positive effects of getting involved in water sports first-hand. He tells us: “After my mum died in 2013, getting in the water, whether on a wakeboard, boat, or diving, was what really helped me and it’s something that we strive to promote here at Kernow Adventure Park. When people visit the park we want them to escape from day-to-day stresses and walk away having had the time of their lives.” The Kernow Adventure Park team has been hand-selected for their positivity; all instructors are trained lifeguards and promote a friendly and fun environment, motivating and inspiring you to make the most of the activities available. There really is nothing better than scrambling around the aqua park, slipping and sliding through the assault course with family and friends;
adults will feel like kids again and kids will feel like they can conquer anything after braving the big slide or flying into the air from the launch pad! “The most rewarding thing is to know that we are having a positive influence on other people’s lives, says Alex. “Watersports in general can help you get through some really tough times, it certainly helped me and my main aim is that Kernow Adventure Park will help other people too, both for building confidence in the water and becoming part of a fun and supportive community.” For more information email info@kernowadventurepark.com or visit www.kernowadventurepark.com
Capture a piece of the ocean “Easter weekend was incredible, waves breaking everywhere in Cornwall, and not a cloud in the sky! What better time for me to get out of the galleries, jump into my ocean o ce, and go on a surf photography adventure!” says Waves Gallery owner, Mike Lacey. Exploring more of Cornwall’s coastline and getting those blue-sky shots ready for the summer season, Mike tells us I finally made it out to some little known coves around the south and north coast that I’ve been wanting to photograph for a while. They certainly didn’t disappoint, the water was Caribbeanblue, crystal-clear, surprisingly warm and teaming with wildlife too, I lost count of the seal greetings I had!” With the summer season kicking off in style, Mike will be getting both galleries in Porthleven and Falmouth stocked with all his latest images, so be sure to pop along and check them out. Get summer ready with Slickers Dogs are vulnerable to various heat related problems during hot spells, from heatstroke to burned paws, not to mention other seasonal environmental issues such as pesticides and the dreaded tick season. Heatstroke can happen rapidly and be fatal, so it’s vital to ensure that your dog is kept cool and well ventilated during hot spells of weather and, of course, hydrated too. Elderly or sick pets are even more vulnerable to it’s important to watch out for signs of overheating: panting heavily, deep rapid breathing, pale/dry gums, intensive drooling.
Make summer
holiday memories Perched on the hillside with panoramic coastal views is the wonderful, five star, family owned Wooda Farm Holiday Park. Located in the pretty seaside town of Bude on Cornwall’s dramatic north coast, Wooda Farm is surrounded by soft golden sandy beaches, perfect for long summer days by the sea.
Here are Slickers’ top three products for keeping your dog looking and feeling cool this summer: Cool Coats have helped dogs with illnesses that cause breathing di culties in the heat and has saved lives. They can be worn 24/7, help prevent panting and moderate breathing, therefore relieving stress. Thermal imager testing showed that Cool Coats can help an already over-heated dog reduce its temperature to normal between five and ten minutes.
If the pavement is too hot for your bare feet then it’s most likely burning your dog’s paws too. Slickers stock dog boots with strong-grip soles that are hard wearing and protect little paws from all sorts of dangerous elements all year round. Finally, Doggles; yes we know, they may look like a gimmick but your dog’s eyes are as sensitive as ours and they’re closer to the ground, making them more vulnerable to sand and grit (which incidentally can be very costly should it cause a visit to the vet), as well as the sun’s UV rays. Your dog’s health and wellbeing is a priority for Slickers Doghouse – visit in store or online to see the full range of summer safe products. For more information call 07917 005071 or visit www.slickersdoghouse.co.uk
Spend your days soaking up the warmth of the rays, splash in the natural sea pool on Summerleaze beach, stroll along the coast path, catch endless waves on the incoming swell, seek some shade in the onsite bluebell woodland, or spend some time beside the fishing lake. Providing you with the chance to reconnect with nature and loved ones in this stunning location. So, if you want to create memories that will last a lifetime then book your summer holiday to Wooda, because trust us, it’s so much more than a holiday park. Discover the science
behind the storms In a timely reminder of the real world impact of natural disasters, ShelterBox opened a new exhibition called ‘Hurricanes, Cyclones and Typhoons’, just as a real cyclone hit southern Africa. The Cornish disaster relief charity opened the exhibition in early April and a ShelterBox team arrived in Africa the same week, responding to the devastating floods caused by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. So far, ShelterBox has distributed essential household items and shelter to around 2,000 households who lost their homes to the floodwaters. Open until November 2019, the new exhibition at ShelterBox Visitor Centre in Truro explains the science behind the storms and the devastating effects of the winds, with stories from ShelterBox’s many responses around the world. There’s a new family friendly Weather Lab, with science experiments to try and a family hurricane challenge to complete. You can also keep up to date with ShelterBox’s responses around the world. BELOW Cycle from beach to beach this summer
I
t’s that time of year again – the sun is out and Cornwall’s coastline and countryside have come to life with the bloom of spring and the promise of summer. What better time to get outside? This month, in order to help you make the most of this special time of year, we take a quick look at just some of the adventurous offerings available around the Duchy. So grab your diary, take a seat and prepare to start filling out your spring and summer itinerary. We’ll start off gently, for those of you looking to ease your way into an active summer lifestyle. It’s been a long winter and as they say, it’s important to stretch! To loosen up those still-stiff muscles, we recommend lacing up your boots and enjoying one of Cornwall’s innumerable walks. Whether your preference is coast or countryside, wetland or woodland, there’s plenty to be explored in our beloved county. Being based in Porthleven, we here at Cornwall Living are well poised to offer some top walking tips and, as we too need to shake off the winter chill, we’ll start with a couple of routes close to home. One of my personal favourites is the two-mile circular route around Godolphin Hill. Starting off in the reception/tea room of Godolphin estate, it isn’t long before you find yourself at the crown the hill, gazing in one direction towards St Michael’s Mount and in the other, to St Ives Bay. It’s like looking down at a map! Another wonderful route is the ‘Plantations and Parkland’
walk around Penrose estate, between Helston and Porthleven. Commanding a staggering acreage of parkland, much of which enjoys views of Loe Pool – Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake and a Site of Special Scientific Interest – this moderate walk of around 1.5 miles is a pleasure for those who like immersing themselves in nature. To find out more about these routes and to discover more of Cornwall’s best summer strolls, visit nationaltrust.org.uk/lists/walking-incornwall Now that you’re feeling limber, it’s time to mount up. Cornwall is a cyclist’s paradise, with countless coastal routes, winding country roads and off-road trails catering to cyclists of all abilities and disciplines. Perhaps you’re staying in north Cornwall with the family? If so, the Camel Trail, leading around the Camel Estuary from Wadebridge should certainly be in your to-do list. You can hire everything you’ll need for the trail from Bridge Bike Hire (bridgebikehire.co.uk). What’s more, the team offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the trail via the evening rides – a good chance to gain a different perspective of this beautiful hotspot of nature, with dramatic sunsets serving as a backdrop. Perhaps you’ve opted to stay well away from the crowds, but still want to make the most of Cornwall on two wheels? If so, the team at Go ByCycle (cornwallbikehire.co.uk) can deliver hire bikes to you, wherever you are in the Duchy. They can even deliver to you directly on arrival, so you can be mounted and away, as soon as you’re off the train! This year, the Go ByCycle has invested heavily in

There’s also a range of road, touring and family bikes, and the team have lots of suggestions if you’re looking for routes to suit your ability. Now that you’ve dusted off the cobwebs and allowed the weather to warm just that little bit more, you’re probably feeling like cooling off. How better to do so than a day spent on (or in) the water? There are a whole host of activities for kids and adults alike to get stuck into, with businesses dotted around the coastline to help you make the most of them. Lizard Adventure (lizardadventure.co.uk), for instance, allows you to have a go at stand up paddle boarding (SUP), coasteering, kayaking and climbing, also running survival skill sessions and offering equipment hire. They recently opened a new site in Hayle too, where you can have a guided trip or lesson on kayaks and stand up paddle boards, or hire one and head out on your own path. These include the ‘Mega-Sup’, which fits up to eight adults and is great for parties! Just down the coast in Porthleven you’ll find Vertical Blue Adventures (verticalblue.co.uk), offering SUP lessons and hire, guided kayak tours and exciting multi-day adventures, tailored to you. These can include kayaking, wild swimming, shelter building, fires and foraging, as well as moonlit paddle boarding and exploring the coastline on foot. Heading down the coast, sitting opposite St Michael’s Mount at Mara ion, you’ll find The
Hoxton Special (thehoxtonspecial.com). With amazing views of the mount, this exciting venue is perfect for water sports and coffee lovers alike. Putting to use the abandoned lifeguarding hut, just along from the station house car park, visitors here can make the most of S P rental, kitesurfing lessons and yoga classes, all with the best coffee on the beach waiting when you finish. On choppier days when the ocean doesn’t quite have the same appeal, you’ll be pleased to know that you can still make a splash. There are a number of freshwater venues around Cornwall, with an array of activities to help you and yours make holiday memories. Kernow Adventure Park (kernowadventurepark.com), for instance, is a reclaimed, flooded uarry offering activities that include assault courses, open water swimming, even wakeboarding! Finally, it wouldn’t be an adventure holiday in Cornwall if you didn’t at least have a go at surfing, especially seeing as the Duchy is home to some of the best surf breaks in the world. Enlist with St Ives Surf School (stivessurfschool.co.uk) and you’ll quickly catch the bug, learning from some of the country’s best, most innovative and progressive surfers! AND PASSION
The key aspect of business for Bude Windows is doing a job and doing it well.
ì é ABOVE
Bude Windows' award winning Ultrasky Roof
S
ince humble beginnings in 1995, Bude Windows and Conservatories has earned a reputation as one of the most highly-recommended window companies in Cornwall and Devon. The company is going from strength to strength and has just won Ultra Frame’s ‘Installation of the Month’ competition, for its Ultrasky Roof, which included a professional photo shoot of the installation, a certificate for the show room and a £50 Marks & Spencer voucher for the homeowner. The high-end range of products available with Bude Windows has also increased significantly and, in order to showcase its extensive collection, a new showroom has been designed and built on the Bude Windows premises at Kings Hill. The addition of Daniel – son of company owners Alan and Lorraine Britton – to the Sales team, has also made a massive difference to the company; Daniel joined Bude Windows in 2007, trained as a builder and ualified window conservatory installer, before becoming the company’s very knowledgeable Sales Advisor. One customer has said of their experience: “Daniel was a delight to deal with – thoughtful and professional. ever flustered despite a myriad of questions and changes of our minds – he produced really good
proposals. The eventual work was delivered by a super group of people who were professional, courteous and thoughtful – each and every one of them was good to have around. They were all great ambassadors for the company. I was impressed with how they took real pride in their work and with the state in which they left the site. Equally, the after service has also been of the highest order.” They continue: “We can be very demanding customers and I am delighted to say without any equivocation that I wholeheartedly recommend Bude Windows & Conservatories.” This is just one example of the team’s many five-star Google reviews, and it really does sum up the calibre of this exemplary Cornish company. So, with awards, five-star reviews and an impressive new collection of products, why wouldn’t you choose to transform your home with Bude Windows and Conservatories?

QUALITY
ASSURED Whether you’re simply updating or completely refurbishing, there are some areas of the home that demand a higher level of quality.
T
DISCOVER MORE Check out this impressive review, from a recent and very happy Duke Stone client: “Well what a wonderful experience from start to finish! We love our kitchen surfaces – the quality is stunning and the price was amazing. Don’t hesitate to let these guys bring your dream to fruition.”
here’s a certain satisfaction about achieving that dream room, be it your kitchen, bathroom or your garden. However, it can be hard to know where to start, particularly when it comes to sourcing and installing materials of the highest quality. This is where Duke Stone comes in. Duke Stone specialise in the shaping and fitting of the finest natural materials, providing a top-class service with attention to detail and excellent customer care. We ask them whether certain materials tend to fall in and out of vogue as the world of interior design inexorably evolves, and, to that end, which materials are proving popular at the moment. The team tells us: “We cater for everyone’s needs, whatever the trend. We are fortunate to hold the largest stock in the south west of granite, quartz and ceramics, to ensure that all our customers' choices are met. Quartz and ceramics are becoming increasingly popular however, we are still selling a high percentage of granite. Noticeably lighter granites are more popular at present, but the infamous Indian Black Pearl, Absolute Black and Steel Grey are still in vogue." When it comes to kitchens, Duke Stone explain their customers are drawn towards the ceramics for their heat resistant qualities. “The worktops do come at a higher price, but customers purchase for the sleek, modern look and choice of thickness, which can be taken down to 12mm – making this a real winner for them.”
If it’s your garden that you’re keen to make improvements on this spring and summer, Duke Stone recommend paying a visit to their workshops on the Lizard, where you’ll find a vast range of local Cornish granite, serpentine, quoins, lintels, tiles and paving to peruse. Okay, so, you’ve decided to update your home and you think Duke Stone could be the company to help you do it. What next? To get the ball rolling, Duke Stone are more than happy to carry out site visits to help you measure your prospective worktops and give any advice you may require. “Most customers visit our workshop, where they’re able to personally view full-size slabs of granite or quartz and ceramic slabs – a real must for making that final decision. nce you’ve approved our estimate, templating and fitting dates can be confirmed. After templating your worktop, we aim to return within five working days to complete the job.” It couldn’t be any simpler!

If you’re thinking of updating your kitchen, look no further that H Everett Interiors’ stunning Signature range.
N
amed after some of Cornwall’s most incredible locations, each of the collections within the Signature Kitchens range is crafted from the highest quality products and, crucially, is available at affordable prices. Indeed, just a quick glance over the brochure is enough to understand the sheer quality of this range and, whether you’re a hard-line traditionalist, or feeling brave and seeking something out of the ordinary, you’re sure to find a style that suits you. Let’s take the Porth collection as an example. Available in 27 stunning colours, from bright saffron to deep Hartforth blue, Porth is perfect for those wanting to bravely step outside of the norm. Such striking hues, combined with sleek, handless designs, equal a style of kitchen that just screams ‘out of the ordinary’. Then there’s the Towan collection, utilising solid oak shaker doors and sitting comfortably in both classic and modern interiors. Towan is particularly versatile, thanks to an available range of feature doors and accessories. The Signature range offers 10 ranges in all, and each comes painted to order, fitted with innovative storage solutions that are tailored to the needs of you and your household. There’s also a long list of handle options, meaning you can design your dream kitchen down to the finest detail. The team at H Everett Interiors knows all there is to know about kitchens, thanks to decades of experience in the industry. Owner
Heath tells us: “Whether you have a firm idea of what you want, or need to work through a few scenarios with us, we’ll do the technical bits and help to make the process not just pleasant, but a genuinely enjoyable experience. After all, a new kitchen should be exciting!” What’s more, Heath explains: “We pride ourselves on customer service and after-sales care,” and it’s fair to say that this has been the key to the company’s success. So, if you’re contemplating an upgrade to the hub of your home, and are keen to support a Cornish company whose kitchens celebrate the diverse beauty of our beloved county, why not pay Heath and the team a visit?

BUILT TO LAST We catch up with ARCO2 Architecture and hear about their latest, sustainably built home, Reflection.
A
RCO2 Architecture’s by-line, ‘beautiful buildings that don’t cost the earth’, truly emphasises this company’s passion for projects that are both cost effective and environmentally aware. Director Ian Armstrong tells us: “At ARCO2, we’re not just about designing you a dwelling, we create homes with benefits to enhance your lifestyle – literally building homes for future generations.” This approach is evident in the creation of Reflection, a one-of-a-kind property designed by ARCO2 and built by their in-house construction company, ADD Sustainable Construction Ltd. When creating and building this remarkable property, the ARCO2 team worked closely with their client to achieve their vision to the highest possible standard, whilst also taking into consideration the impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours. Ian continues: “As a RIBA Chartered Architects Practice we have a unique, innovative and environmental approach to design, which is evident in this awardwinning house.” The new dwelling is situated on a former derelict garden and a green space at the entrance to a local village. The site had an unusual planning designation as an Open Area of Local Significance ( ALS). This restriction would put most people off pursuing an application, however the policy did not preclude
development. This would require the most respectful and sensitive design in order to retain the intrinsic value of the OALS, which Ian embraced. The extremely challenging client brief was to design a four-bedroom house with every room benefiting from sea views without affecting or impeding the visual character of the site. The concept was to sink the building into the landscape, take advantage of the topography and use the split levels to create rooms that overlook an open-plan living area. It’s fair to say that the finished result is staggering! “It’s one of the most sustainable dwellings in terms of building fabric and energy usage in the area, Ian finishes, and demonstrates that a strong design concept can be really striking.” So, if you want to create a beautiful home with minimal impact on the environment, then get in touch with Ian and the team for your free consultation and make moves to secure yourself a home whilst also securing the planet for future generations.

As Julie explains: “There are endless options if you’re looking for robust flooring for a busy family home, and the latest launches include Trentino porcelain planks, which exude the natural warmth of wood and are even suitable for outdoor use.” It’s not just tiles that draw homeowners from across the county to Fired Earth Truro. AS LIGHT AS AIR
Bring your home into the 21st century by switching to air source heating.
é ì ABOVE
Choose renewable energy and save on bills with an air source heat pump from GreenGenUK
W
ith soaring energy prices and climate change at the forefront of people’s minds, there’s never been a better time to switch to renewable heating. Environmentally friendly, up to 400% e cient and cost-for-cost cheaper to run than oil, LPG and direct electric systems, air source heat pumps are the renewable alternative to Cornwall’s traditional heating problem. Cornish homeowners have always been punished when it comes to their heating bills. Littered with areas outside the mains gas grid, homes here have been subject to greater bills and unfriendly fuels. Thankfully, air source heating provides the solution to this problem. Air source heat pumps replace the heating demand from fossil fuels with e cient, free heat generated from the air. As a result, customers switching to air source can significantly reduce their heating bills and carbon footprint. Plus, with the government incentivising renewable heating installations through the Renewable Heat Incentive – a scheme paying customers up to £1,600 per year for going green – there’s never been a better time to make the transition. We catch up with Neil Rollinson at GreenGenUK – one of Cornwall’s leading renewable providers – to discuss why more homes are now choosing to make the switch.
If you’re in an off-gas area you spend more on your heating,” he explains. “Air source systems can be 30% cheaper than oil and LPG and over 15 years, that’s a massive saving!” Neil, who’s been with GreenGen for four years, continues: “It’s not just the savings on fuel – swapping from oil or gas to a heat pump can also cut a home’s carbon emissions hugely, by several tonnes per year in fact! This means that for a lot of homes, air source is an absolute no-brainer. From their o ces in Helston, GreenGen provide free surveys and detailed proposals to all Cornish homes. Devising only the most environmentally and financially beneficial solutions, GreenGen’s experts are driven to help more of Cornwall switch to a renewable alternative.

TRANSFORM YOUR GARDEN Introducing Colourfence – low maintenance and built to last.
I
DISCOVER MORE To see this fantastic fencing in person and to have a chat with the team, be sure to pop by their stand at the Royal Cornwall Show this June.
f an Englishman’s home is his castle, then his fence panels are his moat! Fences play a key role in our gardens; they mark the boundary between our neighbours and provide security, all whilst keeping the kids and pets in. So, it’s fair to say they that should be built to last, and is it really too much to ask for them to look nice, too? Unfortunately, many of us have succumbed to the inferior wooden offerings in today’s market which, quite simply, don’t last. Fortunately, Colourfence Cornwall have a solution, with their stunning range of pre-coloured steel fencing guaranteed to last for 25 years. The fencing is made from Colourbond steel, one of the most advanced steel products in the world. Beneath the surface, world-leading technology in the form of Zincallume is hard at work delivering long life, anti-corrosion performance. What’s more, they’re very strong! Originating in Australia, these fences are cyclone tested and guaranteed in wind gusts of up to 130mph – a must-have here, by the sea in Cornwall! “We’ve now installed over 700 fences across the region,” says Colourfence Cornwall Director, Olly Daglish, “and the feedback has been amazing. People love the
idea of a maintenance-free fence!” Available in a range of stunning colours, once it’s up, you’ll never have to paint your fence again – bonus! One happy customer from Hayle, who first had Colourfence installed in 2017 and more recently required the company’s services to overcome a di cult neighbour, tells us We had Colourfence fitted in and are very happy with it – no maintenance and it always looks brand new! To overcome an issue with our neighbour we required an extension to the existing Colourfence. Olly understood our problem and, despite being fully booked for the next few months, went above and beyond to get this work done, sending a team within just three days to carry out what can only be described as an excellent job.” Based in Tintagel, Olly and his team cover the whole of Cornwall with the average installation time being just one day, so if your fence is looking a little shabby, why not give him a call and book in a free quote?

ransforming spaces via unique solutions and innovative products, this superb Cornish business prides itself on outstanding customer care and delivering excellent results. It was originally established in Cornwall as a family business, however it now operates on a national scale, servicing clients across the UK with its unique blends and bespoke resin-bound solutions, in both domestic and commercial environments. To find out more, we catch up with company owners, Johnny Pearce and Tom Stringer. With a sales background working for St Austell Brewery as Sales Area Manager, where he grew his client portfolio from £1.2 million to £6.8 million in just three years, Johnny Pearce – whose areas of expertise include business development, staff development, sales, marketing and entrepreneurship – decided he wanted to be his own boss. In 2010, he joined Oltco, owned by his close friend Tom Stringer. Keen to dispel the myth that you should never mix business with pleasure, Johnny has worked alongside Tom for the past eight years, helping to grow the business significantly via their working partnership. Johnny is a keen believer in people, that they are what make a company successful, and so his main passion is developing Oltco’s staff and bringing the human touch to the business. Johnny’s business partner and Oltco’s Technical Director, Tom Stringer’s expertise lies in engineering, business development,
product development, entrepreneurship, problem solving and forward thinking. His early career began in underground mining and as an engineer on the successful Channel Tunnel Rail Link. Utilising his degree in Mining Engineering from Camborne School of Mines, Tom also worked as a shift engineer for the major tunnel refurbishment for Western Power. Tom founded Oltco in 2004, realising his ambition to launch a successful business of his own. With an initial focus on anti-slip safety flooring solutions, ltco uickly began to grow, thanks to Tom’s sheer determination and hard work. And how that hard work has paid off! To date, Oltco has won contracts for a number of prestigious clients, including Kellogg’s, Rolls Royce, Wembley Stadium and HSBC, to name but a few! With a hands-on approach and experience in everything from tiling and carpentry to chemistry and biology, Tom is always the first to get stuck in to find a solution. This, combined with business partner, Johnny’s personable approach to business development, mean that the next 15 years are set to be just as exciting for this exemplary Cornish business!

From wetsuits TO DINNER SUITS Make the most of Newquay’s world-renowned surf breaks with a stay at The Headland Hotel, perched above Fistral beach.
T
here’s a uni ueness to surfing in Cornwall that very few places around the world can match. While the archetypal surfing dream is one of board shorts and bikinis against a backdrop of palm fronds swaying in the warm trade winds. Each year more and more people are discovering the delights of the cool, revitalising north Atlantic waters, paired against the charming contrast of comfort and foodie flavour back on land.
If Cornwall is a uni ue place to surf, then Fistral beach, below The Headland Hotel, is even more so. The connection with the sea begins the moment you arrive, with views directly overlooking the famous peak at north Fistral – home of the Boardmasters Surf Competition and other world tour events, and location of the infamous reef break with its often-gigantic waves, The Cribbar. At night, you fall asleep to the sound of the ocean outside your window, dreaming of what the next day will bring.

| STAY BELOW Get out on the water before retreating to hotel luxury
RIGHT Newquay is perfect for those who want to learn to surf
At breakfast, the sea conditions reveal themselves and all you have to think about are such things as whether to go for the mellow reforms in the white water, or the glassy peelers outback. Situated below the Hotel you can find the Surf Sanctuary, a surf school offering superior views of the Atlantic waves, as well as racks of warm 5mm wetsuits and boards of all sizes to kit you out for any surf situation. So, simply put on your wetsuit, grab a board, choose your peak, paddle out and let the magic happen! The cooler waters of the Atlantic help keep the crowds low compared to warmer locations with similar uantities of waves, and when you’re equipped to deal with the colder temperatures, you may well find that it offers another element of addiction to your surfing. Indeed, the feeling when you step out of the cool ocean, the salt water on your skin, glowing as your blood pumps to warm your body, is one of the great pleasures of life by the sea. ack on land, drop your board back in the rack and head for The Headland Spa for a spell in the Cornish salt steam room or sauna, as you contemplate a relaxing evening ahead. Watch the sun set into the Atlantic, as the same swells you were riding earlier continue to roll in from the hori on, bringing a distinct sense of contentment. Enjoy that tired but relaxed feeling that only a cold-water surf, followed by a steam and sauna, can bring. As the austere Cornish cliffs contrast with the soft golden sand and tur uoise sea, so too does the chill of the raw and wild ocean with the cosy modernity of the hotel. For us, the only way to improve on the entire experience would be to select yourself a glass of award-winning Camel alley Dry, from grapes watered by the very same rain clouds that pass over The Headland on their journey up the coast, partnered with some local shellfish, brought in by local fishing boats on the same tides that set the rhythms of your surfing adventures.
So, if our cover feature this month has got you in the mood to hit the surf this spring and summer, then a stay at ew uay’s Headland Hotel, as a base from which to launch your hunt for waves, comes highly recommended.

AN IDYLLIC
country retreat
With period cottages and acres of land you know you’ll have a relaxing stay at Tremaine Green Cottages.
A
s you walk through the arches and into the grounds of Tremaine Green Cottages, a sense of tranquility and peace envelops you. You’re greeted to the sight of period Cornish cottages in a traditional courtyard setting, made from mellow Cornish stone, granite and blue delabole slate once mined at a quarry nearby and shipped from the pictures ue fishing harbour of Polperro. The peaceful surroundings at Tremaine are rich and green with well-established, award winning gardens– far enough from any main roads for kids to roam around and play without the worry of tra c. ot to mention the pigmy goats and miniature horses on-site that you can pet, feed and befriend, as well as the owners friendly Great Dane. There is also a tennis court if you’re up for a game or two. Well located to explore south Cornwall’s plethora of coves and small tranquil beaches, this stretch of coastline is protected by the ational Trust and is fondly known as the 'smugglers coast' thanks to its legends of piracy and bootlegging. Tremaine Green’s closest cove, Lansallos, is just 2.5miles away and was described by BBC Coast as: “The quintessential Cornish smugglers cove,” who knows you might even stumble across some long lost treasure! Also nearby are the neighbouring towns of Fowey and Looe, with brilliant restaurants, bars and artisan shops to explore. Then, after a day exploring south Cornwall’s secret coves, tranquil waters and idyllic fishing villages return to your cosy cottage and watch the sun go down from the patio with a glass of something chilled, or, if it’s a cool evening – snuggle down in front of the comforting glow of a warm fire. Tremaine provides the opportunity for families big or small to gather together, with cottages ranging from one to three-bedroom and the potential to rent numerous cottages for larger families or family celebrations. Accommodating up to 45 people, all in beds, and with up to two dogs allowed per cottage, you’re sure to have a holiday to remember whether you’re just with your partner or a whole group of family and friends.

COLLECTION Discover the new season trends at Weird Fish, Cornwall’s laid-back coastal clothing brand.
P
opular clothing brand, Weird Fish, was born in 1993 after a walk along a coastal path in Cornwall. Inspired by the great outdoors and beautiful landscapes, Weird Fish makes high-quality, easy-going clothes that evoke a ‘forever weekend’ feeling. Since creating its first t-shirt, the brand has come a long way and is now one of the UK’s favourite lifestyle clothing brands. Using unique fabrics and clever dying and washing techniques, you can rely on Weird Fish for instant, feel-good favourites. You can find the laid-back coastal brand at four locations across Cornwall, with stores in Falmouth, Newquay, Truro and St Ives. Cornwall is the perfect fit for Weird Fish, with its strong maritime heritage and love of the outdoors. For this year’s summer offering, the Weird Fish collection boasts a range of fantastic pieces to cover you from beach to bar; from maxi-dresses, playsuits and shorts for women, to printed shirts, board shorts and t-shirts for the guys. The brand’s famous wa e flip-flops are also a must, with their foot massaging bumpy texture for all day comfort. The most vibrant item in the women’s wear summer collection, is the best-selling Tallahassee jersey dress, which has returned in four different prints for the season – ideal for when the barbeque invites start to roll in. Similarly, the summer menswear collection is packed full of go-to items for a day at the beach, a family outing or a simple stroll through town. We recommend teaming relaxed-fit t-shirts with board shorts for sunshine-filled weekends of exploring. As we all know, English weather can be unpredictable. With this in mind, Weird Fish also has a full range of waterproof jackets and lightweight knitwear. So whatever your weekend plans – and whatever the weather – Weird Fish has you covered.

ART |
Love art? Far more than just a gallery, we discover what The Customs House Gallery has to offer art enthusiasts over the course of 2019.
H
aving taken over the Customs House Gallery on the harbourside in Porthleven more than six years ago, Louise and John Winterton are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead, with a superb line up of exhibitions and a continued focus on their fresh and innovative display of creativity. Louise and her family have a deep connection to Porthleven and have called the village home for generations, with her great great grandmother, Elizabeth, residing in the cottages right next door to what is now The Customs House Gallery. This independently owned and run space is a haven for art lovers and it continues to evolve, with a constant flow of new pieces from well-established gallery artists, as well as those from new additions to the gallery. Inside, it has a welcoming, sophisticated feel, with many pieces of Porthleven’s stunning surrounding scenery captured in its exhibitions. The gallery is also a member of the Own Art scheme – a popular means of affording original work, usually from local artists. The scheme, which is a national initiative supported and funded by Arts Council
England, allows you to spread the cost of your favourite original piece over ten months, with an interest-free loan of up to £2,500. And that’s not all! They understand that enjoying your favourite piece of art isn’t quite as simple as buying it and placing it on the wall. For this reason, they offer a bespoke framing service, which keeps them busy with locals and visitors alike and is just another reason why this fabulous Porthleven gallery attracts more local artists every year. So, what does The Customs House Gallery have lined up for 2019? Well, John and Louise don’t just run exhibitions; with each exhibiting artist, visitors are able to meet the artist during their exhibition as they paint in the gallery, to discuss their work, techniques and learn what inspires them. From 7th until 13th June, David Gray will be the gallery’s guest artist, showcasing his acrylic paintings of Porthleven harbour. Then, between Friday 21st and Thursday th June, you’ll find David Hosking exhibiting. Inspired by sources he describes as “many and varied,” David’s

work has attracted a wide international following and his work can be found in collections across the globe. From Friday 26th July until Thursday 1st August, visitors can see the exhibition of Roger Curtis. Firmly rooted in the landscape, Roger’s home in Newlyn provides the ideal base for his paintings of the far south west of Cornwall, which always begin, and are usually completed, ‘en plein air’. Between 23rd and 29th August, Rebecca Jewell will be displaying her passion for botanical art, with a mesmerising display of intricately detailed pieces. Working from photographs, it is often remarked that you can almost smell the scent of the flowers she captures, as if you could reach in and touch them. Rebecca shares her studio with husband, Simon Jewell, who will be exhibiting at The Customs House Gallery afterwards, between Friday 20th and Thursday 26th September. A painter and photographer, Simon mostly paints in oils and acrylic, primarily capturing the Cornish land and coastline of the Lizard peninsula – the untamed and ethereal beauty of the landscape.
Displaying a stunning array of paintings, sculptures, jewellery and beautiful ceramics and with such a diverse line up of exhibiting artists, as well as the opportunity to meet these incredibly talented creatives, if you’re an art enthusiast, a visit to The Customs House Gallery in Porthleven is a must this year!

HIT THE SPOT A hearty recipe that’s just perfect for the start of summer, from Steve and Lynn Allen of Riverford Home Delivery.
SERVES 2 INGREDIENTS: 1 bunch of asparagus Olive oil 4-6 spring onions, depending on size 50g goat’s cheddar ½ lemon Salt and black pepper
S
erved as a starter in the Riverford Field Kitchen in Devon, this recipe, according to Steve and Lynn, is simplicity itself. “It makes a perfect lunch with a few slices of chewy, crusty bread and butter. We use a goat’s cheddar as it lends itself well to grating, crumbling or shaving, but a younger, fresher goat’s cheese will still hit the mark.”
TOP TIPS New season bunched onions can be used instead of the thinner spring onions; thinly slice the bulbous base of the onion before dividing up the rings. Use a soft, fresh crumbly sheep’s cheese, such as Sussex slipcote, or a feta-style cheese, or some shavings of pecorino.
METHOD 1
Start by heating the oven to 210°C/Gas 7.
2
Snap the lower stalks from the asparagus then split any larger stems in half, lengthways, so that they are all roughly the same size. Toss the asparagus in a baking dish in just enough olive oil to coat. Season with salt and pepper and roast in the oven for 8-12 minutes (depending on their thickness) until tender.
3
Trim the spring onions; nip off the root, cut off the darker ends and peel away the first layer of skin. Slice very finely at an angle. reak up the slices with your fingertips.
4
As soon as you take the asparagus out of the oven, squeeze the lemon juice over it and toss the spring onions through. Then pile onto a plate and either crumble, grate or shave the cheese on top. Then enjoy!

Raise your glass to provenance and great food at the Merchants Manor, Falmouth.

W
e can probably all agree that Cornish food and drink is some of the best in the country. “We’d be crazy not to take advantage of that, which is why we produce nature inspired food that ticks all the boxes,” says Merchant Manor owner, Nick Rudlin. With three AA Rosettes to its name, Rastella is the highest rated dining experience in Falmouth, featuring bread infused with pear and foraged seaweed, sweet lamb from the meadows above Lizard Lighthouse, and smoked shellfish and salmon from a woodfired oven. From locally-foraged greens, butchers and garden marketers, to the love Chef Patron Hylton Espey puts into every dish on the menu, there is one mantra in the Rastella kitchen at Merchants Manor: ‘What grows together, goes together’. This makes every breakfast, lunch and dinner at Rastella a journey around Cornwall. Raise your glass to provenance and sustainability – sure to keep you pleasantly occupied as you stretch out in front of the fire or curl up in the window seat to be regaled with tales of far flung travels that brought you tonight’s cocktail of choice. With a massive array of gin and tonics and combinations such as twisted classics and traveller s treasures, all sourced from farflung travels where your cocktail masters
have searched, scoured and tasted to craft a cocktail list that’s perfect for a lazy summer afternoon in the garden, or a cosy night in with dinner. Bold selections include: Kentucky Coffee – a new twist on the Espresso Martini, and Stiggins’ Smoked Old Fashioned – dramatically served in a smoking box. Food and wine is a marriage made in heaven and never more so than at Merchants Manor. “Our carefully curated list includes one of the largest selections of organic, vegan, vegetarian, biodynamic and natural wines in the country,” Nick tells us. From the ‘Rare Breeds’ list with some of the most world-renowned vintages, through to easy drinkers, there really is something for everyone, if only so you can test the team on their knowledge! The nature-inspired modern approach at Rastella ensures everything is put together with thought and pure enjoyment in mind, paying close attention to provenance, locality, seasonality and sustainability, so you don’t have to.

L ove artisan Baker Tom, bringing lovingly made artisan loaves to Cornwall.
T
om Hazzledine was just 23 when he began baking for his local farm shop. It all started with just three loaves baked in his own kitchen and delivered to the shop on the back of his bicycle. Before long, Tom was supplying many more local shops, markets, cafés and restaurants, and today, 13 years later, he runs four – soon to be five – bakery shops of his own and has an ever-expanding wholesale business across the south west. Tom’s aim has always been to make good, wholesome, interesting bread that tastes good and is good for you (with no added ‘nasties’) – loaves that have been simply made, the way they have been for centuries. And Baker Tom’s ethos still remains the same, since the day he started. As he puts it: “We keep things simple so that the bread can be the rising star.” This spring, Tom is opening a new bakery shop in St Austell, selling his full range of loaves, cakes, pastries and sandwiches to go, which will please locals and visitors alike who have been eagerly awaiting a Baker Tom shop in this area of the county. Baker Tom’s St Austell will join Tom’s growing list of stores in Falmouth, Wadebridge, Penzance and Pool. The shop in Pool is located at the bakery itself and is a buzzing spot with a welcoming café,
serving all day brunch, barista coffees and lunch specials that offer a taste of Tom’s delicious breads. It’s a great place to while away a few hours, whilst watching the bakers hard at work behind the counter. This is where all Tom’s artisan baked goods are created, before being delivered both to Tom’s own shops and other businesses that sell and serve his bread across Cornwall and Devon. But for Tom and his team, the focus still remains on the loaves. From his classic everyday white tin loaf, to more unusual speciality recipes, Tom’s team use the same traditional baking techniques that Tom employed in his own kitchen. They experiment with new loaf flavours every season, putting their own Baker Tom twist on it. “With every loaf, you get a feel for the baker’s personality,” Tom explains. With Baker Tom’s shops and outlets popping up all over the county, there’s no excuse for your ‘daily bread’ to be anything less than good, wholesome, real bread.

We discover the delicate botanicals and expert flavour combinations that go into a bottle of Curio spirit.
C
ABOVE ì The Curio range RIGHT Rubina and William Tyler-Street BELOW Spirits fit for royalty!
urio is a small family business owned and run by Rubina and William Tyler-Street from their base in Mullion. William tells us: “We have an integral understanding of flavours and what they bring to a dish and have applied this knowledge to our spirit range, an influence that can be seen in Curio’s cardamom vodka, which is full of esty spice and, when paired with a soft drink such as Fentiman’s Rose Lemonade, tastes like Turkish delight. “During a walk from our garden and along the coast path from Mullion to the Li ard, the inspiration for Wild Coast Gin was born – the scent of flowers in the garden, the fragrance of pine in the fields, the fresh sea breeze with a hint of salinity on the lips, the aromas from the wild plants and flowers along the coastline – all this is captured in a bottle of Curio gin,” says Rubina. Passionate about provenance, creativity and innovation – Rubina and William wanted to create spirits that are not the norm. ur locality is so special and uni ue due to its landscape and flora and this is what we wanted to replicate in our Wild Coast Gin. Just like a good wine has grapes from its region, Curio’s Wild Coast Gin incorporates the flavours of Cornwall with rock samphire and seaweed botanicals, hand-foraged from Cornwall’s coastline, providing distinctive Cornish flavours for everyone to savour. Rubina and William have grown their offering in recent years from making bottles in a batch in their kitchen, to making several batches at a time in a larger unit, which can produce bottles a day! Manor Fashions offers a unique and relaxing shopping experience for weddings.
M
anor Fashions is an exclusive boutique specialising in mother of the bride and mother of the groom outfits. Ladies are encouraged to make an appointment where the proprietor, Ann Pascoe, will guide them through hundreds of outfits to find the perfect one for that special day. Judith Milton went to Manor Fashions for the outfit she would go on to wear at her daughter’s wedding at the beginning of April this year, and commented on her experience: “Thank you for your wonderful service Ann. You certainly have such a lovely selection of outfits that it isn t worth going anywhere else; I received so many compliments on my outfit. Offering a relaxed and unique shopping experience, Manor Fashions is situated in a beautiful rural environment in the rear courtyard of Truthall Manor – only two miles from the town of Helston. Although a little off-the-beaten-track, this just lends to the shopping experience and makes it feel like something special, which is how it should feel when shopping for the outfit that you’re going to wear to your child’s wedding. Plus, there’s plenty of parking, making it easier than the hubbub of town. Ann gives these tips for mothers of the bride or groom: “Know what the bridesmaid colours are before looking for your outfit, and make sure to choose colours and styles that suit you – it’s no good choosing a colour to fit in with the theme of the wedding if it washes you out. Also make sure to visit specialist shops so you can try on any number of outfits, and see what works. nline shopping is great but in this instance, it’s sure to cause more stress than trying on outfit there and then. Finally, by going to Manor Fashions, you’re assured of the fact that you will be wearing something special that isn’t available on the high street, and with outfits ranging from to , there’s something for every budget. Get in touch today to book your appointment and find the perfect wedding outfit to make your day even more special.

Chewing gum, doughnuts, new nylons and thousands of smooth-talking, quick-witted soldiers. Cornwall will never forget the day the Americans arrived!

F
rom the warm plains of Maryland, USA, to the cold coastal villages of Cornwall, follow handsome and hopeful US 29th Infantry Division Technical Sergeant, Joe Miller, on his poignant journey to the Nazi-occupied beaches of Normandy, France. Based on remarkable, real, wartime experiences – as well as stories recalled by the residents of Mawnan Smith, Operation Neptune commemorates the 75th anniversary of D-Day with the compelling story of an American GI’s experience of Cornwall at war. The performance is directed by Guy Watson, Cornish director and Artistic Director of Cousin Jack’s – the company behind the much-loved stage adaptation of The Mousehole Cat. Written by awardwinning script writer Charlotte O’Leary, Operation Neptune will star many local faces, including Bec Applebee (Kneehigh Theatre), Rory Wilton (from BBC’s Poldark and the Fisherman’s Friends’ recent feature film), Will Coleman (Golden Tree Productions’ Man Engine) and Emily Woodman
(O-region’s Hireth). Trebah Garden will also be introducing acclaimed actor, Oliver Longstaff, to the county, playing the part of the handsome American hero. The cast will also feature a local community choir and a supporting cast drawn from Hall for Cornwall Youth Theatre and Youth Dance. Operation Neptune is an epic promenade show performed across Trebah Garden, based on the true stories from the thousands of US troops who left from Trebah’s beach to play their role in the D-Day invasion of France. Performed every evening from Tuesday 11th until Saturday 15th June at 7pm, tickets are priced at £16 for adults and £8 for children under 16. The performance takes place on foot around the garden. If you have any queries about accessibility, be sure to call the team directly.

t n e m e v e i h c a n e d l o Ag Join Newquay Zoo this May as it celebrates 50 years of invaluable research and conservation.
N
BELOW Meet the residents!
ewquay Zoo, located on Cornwall’s north coast, is part of the Wild Planet Trust. The organisation began as a small petting zoo, but has evolved into a conservation, research and education charity dedicated to the protection of animals, plants and their environment, both locally and across the globe. Animals that used to live at the zoo include sea lions, bears and leopards, as well as camels, caiman and bison. This year is a very special year for Newquay Zoo, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary on Sunday 26th May! To commemorate such a significant occasion, the team is throwing a very special celebration party on the day from 10am until 5pm, and you’re all invited! Expect 60s-themed live music, giant games, activities, face painting, a barbeque, themed enrichment for the animals, special talks and more – an event that’s most certainly not to be missed. At the party you can take a stroll down memory lane with the zoo’s eye-opening 50th anniversary exhibition. This will lead you through the organisation’s unique journey over the past five decades, plus, you can pick up a free ‘Then and Now’ trail to discover just how much the zoo has changed over the years. Did you know, sea lions used to live in the penguin pool and the penguins could be found where the meerkats now live?
In addition to these exciting 50th birthday activities, Newquay Zoo is proud to be launching Ring Tail Ale, brewed by Keltek Cornish Brewery. This will be available at pubs in the area and, for every pint or bottle sold, the brewery will donate 10p, so you can raise a glass knowing that you’re also raising money for a very worthy cause. So, if you’re still planning your itinerary for the late May bank holiday weekend, be sure to set Sunday aside and come along to this most special of days, where you can join the Newquay Zoo team in making memories to last the next 50 years.

A SIMPLE SOLUTION Mr Denzil May, Consultant at Duchy Hospital, talks us through the symptoms and treatment options for haemorrhoids.

aemorrhoids, or piles, are often regarded as an embarrassing problem. However, they are very common and if you are having issues, then you’ll be reassured to know that they can often be treated easily and effectively. Regardless, symptoms should always be investigated to exclude serious pathology. Haemorrhoids are swellings of the vascular cushions that are found inside or around the bottom. These anal cushions help with anal sphincter function, aiding in fine control over flatus (wind) and stool. Everybody has haemorrhoidal cushions and the term haemorrhoids or ‘piles’ is usually used when problems occur such as bleeding, prolapse, itching, discomfort or pain. Piles themselves, whilst bothersome and often requiring treatment, are not usually dangerous. However, bleeding from the back passage or the feeling of a lump certainly requires further assessment, to exclude serious conditions such as rectal or anal cancer. The tests involve an examination of the back passage, often with a proctoscopy (a small short camera inserted into the anus) and then, usually, a ‘flexible sigmoidoscopy’ or ‘colonoscopy’. For the majority of the time, rectal bleeding is caused by piles, however, bleeding from the bottom or a lump is a symptom of bowel cancer, so tests are usually done to exclude these conditions. So how are haemorrhoids treated? Most of the time, no further intervention is
required. Dietary and lifestyle measures such as increased fibre intake, drinking plenty of water and avoiding straining at stool is usually enough to reduce symptoms. Sometimes, gentle laxatives can help reduce straining if dietary measures do not work. If simple measures don’t work, sometimes intervention is then required. The options include rubber band ligation, haemorrhoid artery ligation and plication of prolapse, or haemorrhoidectomy (excision of piles). More recently at Duchy Hospital, radiofrequency ablation of piles has been made available. Radiofrequency ablation, or ‘Rafaelo’, is a novel technique that involves insertion of a special probe into the haemorrhoidal cushion and high frequency electricity is applied, which shrinks the haemorrhoid by heating the tissue. It’s suitable for grade 1 and 2, and early grade 3 piles. Rafaelo is a minimally invasive day case procedure. It’s often carried out under local anaesthetic, but sometimes sedation or general anaesthetic is used. Most patients report very little pain or discomfort and post-operative recovery time is very short. To learn more about this procedure, visit the Rafaelo website at www.rafaelo.co.uk. This procedure is only available to private patients in Cornwall.

It is minimally invasive as the material is applied directly to the tooth surface. This technique can be used to address your concerns over the appearance of your teeth often in just a single visit, which in turn offers significant financial savings over conventional porcelain veneers.
MERCURY FREE DENTISTRY We believe that teeth should look like teeth no matter where they are in your mouth. We use tooth coloured materials that are bonded into place providing beautiful aesthetics and help to straighten the teeth. We are proud to say we have been mercury free since new ownership in 2015.
IMPLANT DENTISTRY (SMILE IN A DAY)HAVE HAD Enlighten’s guaranteed In In suitable patients we can replace a conventional removable denture with a fixed restoration in just one day! We use a revolutionary approach that has radically changed the replacement of lost teeth. We can now remove failing teeth, place new implants and provide a fixed full restoration in a single day. ornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care is offering an exclusive opportunity to join a team of 50 cyclists as they ride from the river Camel to the Nantes in northwest France. There are only a few spaces left for the October event that will start from the magnificent Prideaux Place in Padstow, and end at the Chateau des duc de Bretagne. The Chateau is the jewel at the heart of Nantes. Enclosed by fortress walls and surrounded by its own moat, it’s imposing yet welcoming. It’s where Cornwall Hospice Care’s cyclists will celebrate the end of what promises to be an ama ing adventure, when they ride into the walled courtyard four days after leaving Cornwall. The planned 280-mile route explores the beauty of Cornwall on day one, before an overnight ferry crossing to France where the challenge features much of the famous La Velodyssée – the Atlantic cycling route – as the team head south. Cornwall Hospice Care’s Head of Fundraising, li Hoare, tells us: “This bespoke adventure follows on from our hugely successful Mount to Mont cycle in , and will provide our cyclists with fantastic views over Padstow before we head
down and through the town and out across the Camel Trail, eventually reaching France and the finish line. In , li continues, our team, of all ages and abilities, even some who hadn’t ridden a bike in years, raised a breathtaking , to help fund the care we provide to terminally-ill patients and their families. But we also experienced a joint adventure that none of us will ever forget. It’s why I’m riding again and why I hope others will join me for this remarkable and truly uni ue experience. Following the success of last year’s event, with hundreds of runners taking part and thousands of pounds raised for the charity, this year’s Runway Runaround is set to be bigger than ever! This isn’t your everyday 10km route; you’ll be running along and around Newquay Airport’s active runway. Don’t worry though, there won’t be any need to duck! The route will also take you past Cornwall Air Ambulance’s very own helipad, so if you’re looking for a unique run this year, to set yourself a 10km challenge or if you simply want to take part to fundraise for this lifesaving Cornish charity, the Runway Runaround ticks every box. Every penny raised will go towards the New Heli Appeal target of £2.5M, to bring a bigger and faster helicopter to Cornwall by April 2020. The new helicopter will help the crew to reach more people when they need it most. Many of us know somebody who has been airlifted and you never know who might need it next. We find out more about Cornwall’s stroke befriending service as it celebrates its 1st birthday.

ach year in Cornwall, approximately 1,300 people have a stroke – often leading to life changing challenges that can include both physical and communication disabilities. Life after a stroke can be lonely and the various after-effects can mean that people are at an increased risk of experiencing anxiety and depression. The Stroke Befriending Service is celebrating its 1st anniversary; the service helps those who have experienced a stroke feel less isolated by matching them with a volunteer to talk about their experience, the volunteers then typically meet with those affected by a stroke once a week for six weeks offering support and encouragement. Janet had a stroke in and has first hand experience of the benefits that can arise through participating in the scheme. Her stroke left her with severe communication di culties, which meant she couldn’t communicate with her family properly. She was subsequently matched to a peer befriender, Margaret, who she bonded and laughed a lot with. When giving feedback about the service Janet exclaimed: “This is the most I think I have ever been able to talk since I had my stroke, thank you so much.” Janet now attends the Penzance stroke support group set up by Margaret and
husband John. This is a huge leap for her, as for two years after her stroke Janet rarely ventured outside the house. Janet has also become friends with Jonathan, who also attends the group as a result of meeting John and Margaret through the befriending service. These previously isolated people now have new friendships and a support network for talking about the challenges they face. Neil, another volunteer who has had a stroke himself and has encouraged clients to take up new hobbys says I find being a befriender a rewarding and humbling experience, as you are supporting those who may feel isolated and alone." These stories show the positive impact volunteering as a stroke befriender can have on someone’s life. The service is currently in urgent need of volunteers for the programme so if you, or anyone you know is up for being a befriender, then contact Volunteer Cornwall and discover how you can be a friend to someone who needs you.
