Embark on an
autumn adventure Autumn has to be one of the best times to visit Cornwall. The roads are quieter, the pace of life slows down and the temperatures are perfect for walking and exploring Cornwall’s 300-plus miles of coastline! If you like a luxurious base to return to after a hard day’s hike, the four-star Budock Vean Hotel and cottages are just minutes from the South West Coast Path, where it winds alongside the Helford river in south Cornwall. Stride out towards the harbour town of Falmouth in one direction (and catch a handy bus back), or cross the river by foot
ferry (April until the end of October) and head to the picturesque Shipwrights Arms in the other. urther afield, explore the south side of the river, or explore the Lizard peninsula. Offering a range of accommodation, including dog-friendly, Budock Vean’s autumn bed and breakfast rates start from just £73 per person, per night. For more information call 01326 250288 or visit www.budockvean.co.uk

Centenary celebrations at Haywood Farm 100 years ago, Tom Bray’s great grandparents bought the land near St Mabyn from Lord Falmouth, due to his struggles caused by the war. Originally a working farm, Haywood has produced cider on its granite press for well over a century, supplying local families and labourers with what is, arguably, the West Country’s favourite drink. But it was only in 2003 that it began to grow into the cider farm we know today.
they host during the warmer months, donating half of the proceeds to Prostate Cancer UK. Both are available from the farm shop, so whether cider’s your tipple of choice or you’d like to hear the highlights from Haywood Farm’s superb line-up of local artists, be sure to pay a visit this autumn! For more information call 01208 840140 or visit www.haywoodfarmcider.co.uk
That year, after making cider with a group of friends, Tom’s passion for the craft had been well and truly sparked and since, he and the team have propagated and planted 19 acres of orchards, carefully selecting varieties for their quality and suitability to the Cornish climate.
Porthleven gallery starts planning for 2020
After a busy main season, The Customs House Gallery in Porthleven is eager to begin preparations for next year, which will include a whole new series of exciting exhibitions and ‘meet the artist’ sessions. In the meantime, owners John and Louise Winterton will be keeping the gallery open seven days a week, right the way through to Christmas, before dropping to six days a week from January until Easter. This means that even in the depths of winter, you can still pop in and enjoy the Customs House’s vibrant and eclectic display of original work. What’s more, the gallery is due to receive some new collections of work, including a range from artist, David Gray. To keep up to date with everything going on at this exciting gallery, including announcements of next year’s exhibition line-up, be sure to sign up to the newsletter.
To mark the anniversary and celebrate the farm’s cider-making heritage, Tom and co. have produced a Centenary Cider, made using honey from their own bees and, of course, apples from the orchards. But that’s not all. They are also producing an album to celebrate all of the live music

Celebrating 50 years It is very unusual for a company in the double glazing industry to be owned by the same people for years, however Collington & Co Ltd are celebrating 50 years of trading with only two sets of family owners in that time! Collingtons is a long-standing family run business still serving customers with exemplary after care service. Indeed, they pride themselves on their first-rate customer service, which has become something of a company hallmark, with the whole team completing every job as if they were working on their own homes. Collingtons work as a team, with everyone fully employed. This means that customers receive a first-rate experience, from the first phone call through to the lifetime of their doors, windows or conservatories. It’s no wonder that just two years ago, this sterling Cornish company was awarded a ‘Buy with Confidence’ rating by
Cornwall Council, making it the highest of trusted traders. The latest family member to join the business is Hollis, whom many people will know from numerous years’ experience in the hospitality trade. He tells us: “I’ve been amazed by how many people come back to Collingtons again and again. We had a lady in last week who said she’d had her door from Collingtons 35 years ago. While it has been great over the years, it was starting to look a little worn, so she wanted a new one. It’s these moments that make me proud to be part of the Collington family.” 50 years in business also means that the company’s ten year, no-quibble guarantee has real value, so if you’ve been meaning to update your doors or windows, or are hoping to add some living space with a conservatory, why not put your faith in Collington & Co?
Holiday home tips In an ongoing series of holiday home tips, George at Cornish Traditional Cottages highlights four ways to welcome guests to your property. As the owner of a Cornish holiday let, one of your main objectives is to ensure your guests have such a great stay that they want to return and recommend it to their friends. Achieve this and your bookings will soar, along with your income! The key, George tells us, lies in the welcome. If you’re greeting your guests in person, be sure to keep it short and sweet. “Your guests may be tired after a long journey and wish to unwind straightaway. So, make sure you keep the welcome warm but brief. Finish with confirming they have your contact details so they can contact you if necessary.” Next is to ensure your house is feeling homely. “If your guests are due to arrive late, make sure some lights are on, and if it’s chilly, put the heating on.”
For more information call 01326 572599 or visit www.collingtons.com

Finally, George explains: “Remember everyone. If the party includes children, leave out some games or colouring books, or if the dog is coming along, round off the perfect welcome with a toy or some treats!”

The award-winning kitchen team at south Cornwall luxury retreat, Talland Bay Hotel, are set to reveal a refreshed take on their superlative dining experience.
For more information call 01208 893980 or visit www.corncott.com
This season will see new menus introduced in the 2AA Rosette Terrace Restaurant as well as an exciting range of themed afternoon teas. Look out for ‘Alice in Talland Land’ – a fun twist on their classic teatime offering, featuring Mad Hatter’s hat, playing cards and toadstool edible fancies. There will be more surprises in store as the hotel transforms into a winter wonderland from late November. Guests return year in, year out to see the latest Christmas decorations, and enjoy festive teas and feasts in front of the fire.

George goes on to explain that leaving your guests a little something to welcome them never hurts. “A bottle of wine along with a local speciality cheese, cake or biscuits is a nice touch.” For larger groups, a homemade cake will go down a treat!

time of year to enjoy a hot tub
As the evenings start to draw in and the weather gets cooler, climbing into a steaming hot tub is all the more enjoyable and satisfying. A hot tub is a great way to get outside and stay in touch with nature, getting a breath of fresh air when you may otherwise be lounging indoors. Not to mention the evenings and darker nights of autumn make for some spectacular scenery when it comes to sunsets and moonlit starry skies. By continuing to enjoy your spa in autumn you’ll benefit from a range of health advantages including: soothing arthritis, alleviating stress, improving circulation and encouraging recovery

thanks to the spa’s heated water and massage jets. There are also a range of other features that make your hot tub even more enjoyable such as different finishes and adjustable massage jets.
Several rooms even boast their own balconies, most looking out over the estuary and Polruan on the opposite side of the river, and it’s not hard to dream of kicking back and just soaking up the view, a glass of bubbles to hand. What better way to end an evening spent in the relaxed waterfront restaurant, sampling the area’s finest seasonal produce?

Summer has been full of successful fundraising events for Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care. There was the hugely popular Mount Edgcumbe American & Classic Car Show and Summer Fair in August and a fantastic ‘It’s A Knockout’ competition in September. Jointly organised by Cornwall Hospice Care and the Friends of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, the classic car event on the banks of the Tamar this year attracted over 800 vehicles. In September, 13 teams met at Truro Cricket Club for ‘It’s A Knockout’, competing on various inflatable obstacles. Eventual winners were Aspire Gymnasium from Truro who won by just

Penzance is a must-visit at any time of year, but in the winter it really does come into its own, particularly in the run up to Christmas. On 30th November, the town’s Christmas lights will be switched on, then on 14th December, visitors can marvel at the Humphry Davy Lantern Parade, which celebrates the birthday of Sir Humphry avy – world-famous scientist and inventor who is best known for the miner’s safety ‘Davy’ lamp.
Journey back in time this festive season
Looking ahead to Christmas, popular festive dining and Santa by Steam trains at Bodmin & Wenford Railway are already filling up, so be sure to book soon to avoid disappointment! Make Christmas memories in your very own steam railway Christmas story with a visit to meet Santa. When he’s not driving the sleigh with Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer crew, Father Christmas travels by steam train at the Bodmin & Wenford Railway! This year, the railway have also added Mulled Wine & Mince Pie trains to their festive offering, which will run every Friday evening in December in the run up to Christmas. Tickets for all festive events can be booked in advance – simply call the team or visit the website.
Let there be light!
During both events you’ll also be able to do a spot of Christmas shopping in Penzance’s famed Christmas markets, and throughout November, in the build up to the Lantern Parade, Penzance Exchange will be hosting lantern-making workshops for those who’re keen to get creative. There’s lots happening in Penzance over the festive period, including traditional Cornish festivals and entertainment in spades, so be sure to pay a visit this winter! Not just made in Britain, but made in Cornwall! Rebecca and Allison founded cream Cornwall in 2012; they had a vision for their brand, but a small budget to play with, so they initially made a lot of products themselves. Luckily, they both have a practical background in textiles, so they set to work screen-printing, making lampshades, pouring candles and creating diffusers. Since then they have branched out with other producers and are passionate about getting their products made in Cornwall, and if they

Self-catering holidays in the UK have never been so popular and there are numerous options as a property owner, with more and more agencies on the scene along with a myriad of do-it yourself solutions. Amidst this tough competition, local West Country letting agent, Toad Hall Cottages has worked hard to make sure it always offers that little bit extra. Toad Hall Cottages is well established in the industry with 25 years’ experience and a portfolio of over 900 cottages in beautiful locations throughout the south west. Unlike other larger agencies, Toad Hall is locally based and its property managers know the area inside out, putting them in the best position to advise owners on everything from buying a suitable property to furnishing and decorating, along with all the usual legal requirements.
Once on board, your property is in safe hands. Toad Hall invests heavily in its website and marketing to maximise bookings, and is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to improve its service. The property managers build up a strong relationship with owners, are happy to answer any queries however small, and with a 24-hour emergency service are always on hand if anything goes wrong. Toad all Cottages have three o ces in Cornwall located in Wadebridge, Polperro and Helford Passage where property owners are always welcome for an informal chat. Alternatively if you’d like to arrange a meeting, or have any queries, get in touch with the friendly team.

the cold CURE FOR
With a wealth of luxury stays throughout the county, Cornwall has to be up there as one of the UK’s best winter staycation destinations.
D
espite the consistent lengthening of Cornwall’s shoulder seasons, it’s still surprising how few people see it as a winter destination. For the life of me, I can’t understand why! Earth shattering storms make for an awe-inspiring sight on the coast, and the menus of Cornwall’s restaurants reflect the delicious produce that thrives at this time of year.
Pooch-friendly pads Keen to hear why Managing Director of orever Cornwall forevercornwall.co.uk), Phil endall, loves Cornwall in the winter. “Winter in Cornwall is about embracing the elements and tuning into the landscape,” he explains. The skeletal trees whistling in the wind, the rain-soaked dunes leading down to the beach, the rugged cliffs, carved out by aeons of storms and savage winds – there’s so much to take in. “As they say,” he continues, “there’s no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes!” Among a wealth of other superb dog friendly homes, he shows us Roselyn at Lerryn. “When the nights get longer and temperatures drop, it’s time for ygge – Cornwall style!” A stunning stay sleeping six and surrounded by beautiful walks, this property is just a stone’s throw from the local pub. Being dog friendly, it’s perfect for wearing out your canine companion before returning to curl up in front of the log burner. The icing on the cake, however, has got to be the wood-fired innish hot tub

Speaking of food... Cornwall has no doubt become one of the foodie capitals of the , so if you have no other reason to visit the uchy, the food alone should be enough! At Merchants Manor in Falmouth merchantsmanor.com), couples can ease into an adults-only escape and enjoy a proper bit of respite and Cornish hospitality. Owners ick and Sioned have worked tirelessly to present guests with a heady mix of crackling log fires, boozy hot chocolates, great company and fine food, all complemented by an award winning spa. As Nick puts it, “Falmouth and Merchants Manor are the perfect winter companions,” and with the town’s bohemian mix of independent shops, bars and eateries, we couldn’t agree more. Headed up by Chef Patron, Hylton Espey, Merchants Manor’s Rastella restaurant boasts three AA rosettes, and Hylton’s motto that “what grows together goes together” has really helped cement the hotel’s position near, if not at, the top of the local foodie scene.

Escape to Polurrian on the Lizard
Further along the north coast, we catch up with the John Bray Cornish Holidays team johnbraycornishholidays.co.uk). Specialising in Rock, Port Isaac, Polzeath and Daymer Bay, John Bray is renowned for its large portfolio of superb self-catering stays. Speaking with Debbie from the Lettings Team, we ask what she recommends to anybody travelling with their pooch. My favourite walk with my dog is from Rock to Daymer Bay, or maybe to Polzeath and beyond. The beach is a huge stretch of sand, especially at low tide. Flanked by sand dunes, it’s dog friendly all year round.” John Bray has a wealth of properties in the area, including Farlands in Daymer Bay. Sleeping up to 12 and with a large playroom for the kids, Farlands is perfect for large group getaways and family get-togethers. Expect warm coastal interiors, sumptuous bedrooms and ample outside space for when the sun’s shining. Oh, and it’s dog friendly too! ll of this sounds lovely, but for some, nothing quite compares to the deluxe convenience of a hotel stay. f this sounds like you, Polurrian on the Lizard polurrianhotel. com) may just be perfect. Dog friendly and located right on the South West Coast Path, with endless miles of walks in either direction, as a guest, you also have access to the beach below – superb for in uisitive canines – as well as to the Health Club, where you can indulge in a soothing treatment before taking a dip in the indoor pool. Accommodation ranges from boutique hotel suites to the hotel’s holiday villas. s you view the property from the outside, the gardens and grounds alone are an attraction, with woods and a paddock both adding to the sense of tranquillity. The property’s water frontage also presents the opportunity for sailing enthusiasts to seriously indulge their passion; opening up a world of possibilities for leisurely days spent on the water, exploring the beaches and waterside pubs that adorn this stretch of the river. nto the house itself and you’ll find the interior is equally as impressive. The hallway is bathed in light from the atrium above, while the generous sitting room, complete with feature fireplace and wood-burning stove, opens through to a lovely garden room and then into the garden itself. The accommodation on the first floor comprises four en-suite bedrooms, including a generous guest suite, and on the ground floor, the beautiful kitchen and dining room flow seamlessly into one another, providing plenty of social space and truly serving as the heart of the home.
Perhaps the icing on the cake, however, especially in the summer, is the stunning, south-facing sun terrace. Perfect for dinner parties and family barbeques, this is also a wonderful space in which to soak up the sun, boasting panoramic views. After all, we all need a place where we can relax! With gardens and grounds totalling around 2.7 acres, including a wooden chalet and various outbuildings, plus a large triple-bay garage and ample off-road parking – from the inside out, Sailor’s Creek is more than just a fabulous family home. It’s a lifestyle opportunity, the likes of which rarely find their way to market in this coveted corner of the Duchy.

Bring your vision to life ê BELOW
Thinking of building your dream home?
P
roviding a full range of architectural services on projects, from extensions and alterations to existing properties, to bespoke, new-build homes, Austin Architecture & Design was built on the knowledge that each and every project is as unique as the client. Centrally located in the Heartlands development in Redruth, the Austin Architecture team is emerging as one capable of delivering creative; cost-effecting and client led architectural services throughout the south west. So, what do we mean when we say a ‘full range’ of services? In short, it essentially means that the team can manage every stage of your project, from initial concept designs and feasibility studies, to submitting proposals and gaining planning permission, to ensuring everything is compliant with building regulations. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding, and reading through the list of recent projects undertaken by the experts at Austin Architecture, we were impressed to see a long list of successful appointments. These include a recent redesign of a residential plot near Perranporth, and another to obtain planning permission to convert a garage into a self-contained annexe on the Lizard. Planning permission for the latter was granted and the
works completed all in the same year, and the result: a modern, one-bedroom annexe complete with bathroom, lounge and small kitchen, with amazing views towards Housel Bay and the Lizard Lighthouse! But it isn’t just residential clients that Austin Architecture works with. Just this year, the team were appointed by Crofty Multi Academy Trust to carry out an application for planning permission, for a replacement rear canopy to accommodate a new outdoor classroom for Portreath Primary School. Planning permission was quickly approved and the works planned over the summer holidays – another job well done! We could go on to tell you all about the many extensions, conversions and new builds that this stellar Cornish firm has helped bring to life – if only we had more pages! Instead, we’ll simply say that whether your needs are residential or commercial, if you’re looking for a Cornish architectural firm with a successful track record that you can trust, why not put your faith in Austin Architecture & Design?

hether you’re lucky enough to have a view of the sea, rolling countryside or even Cornish mining stacks, it is of course important that these are showcased as much as they so rightly deserve. The team at Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories have the answer to making your view the star of the show. They place a keen focus on customer service and unique designs, as well as the utmost quality and workmanship. It was with these fundamental ideals that the business was founded in 1985, and today they are still very much an integral part of the company’s ethos. With a large portfolio of projects that complement, rather than impose on their surroundings, it’s easy to see why Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories would be anyone’s first choice. The team recognise that conservatories offer a unique space, one that maximises the Cornish backdrop we’re all so fond of. The addition of extra room is a luxury that often seems out of reach, however for a number of years this Cornish company has been creating spaces for a variety of budgets, specifications and project sizes. hat’s more, Philip and the team are constantly striving to put your view ‘centre stage’, at the same time ensuring you’re left with a room that’s usable – more than just a ‘room with a view’. Whether you’re watching a winter storm or catching the last of the summer sun, a conservatory is a versatile space that will act as a welcome addition to your home. One way that Philip Whear has made all this possible is the use of Climate Controlled Glass, which promotes thermal e ciency, making your conservatory a room for 365 days of the year. To discover an array of examples of ‘rooms with views’ in a variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary, hardwood to painted uPVC, simply give the team a call or visit the website. T
he kitchen is arguably the central hub of the home, the perfect space for preparing celebratory feasts, a place where family and friends gather to eat and the control room for planning adventures over a cup of tea. uite often you will find the life and soul of the party in this hospitable environment and why not? Everything you could possibly need is in the kitchen. A free standing island can be an integral part of your new kitchen layout, tailored seamlessly to your unique lifestyle and practical needs – a striking centrepiece sat harmoniously in tune with your stylish kitchen. When it comes to individuality, the beauty of bespoke means you decide how your kitchen functions and looks, identifying preferred materials, finishes and incorporated hardware. Rozen can advise you on how to achieve your goal, utilising plans and perspective drawings, helping you to visualise how the completed project will look. If an island is designed for food preparation, a sink and waste disposal can be part of the work top, cleverly concealed with a chopping board cover, replicating the same material as the worktop itself. Genius. A fantastic choice of worktop is Silestone: made up of ninety percent quartz, it’s non-porous, stain resistant and has anti-bacterial properties to boot. Should you consider yourself to be a star baker, why not incorporate a proving drawer? The possibilities are endless. Coming home after a long day, the island provides the ultimate place to sit and chat with friends or family over a cup of your favourite coffee with the kettle on hand for refills. ccentuated with bar stools that offer flexible seating arrangements, it does not stop there. nothing that cannot be done with a kitchen island. For the in-house chef with a penchant for cookery books, easily accessible storage solutions can be incorporated to house them, situating them close to the culinary action for easy reference. Why not install a wine fridge – a very sensible option should your favourite recipe call for a dash of white. In fact, most appliances can be included in an island, it can be a multi-functional and stylish addition, practical and attractive, which will only enhance your family home. ozen’s designers have their fingers firmly on the pulse, with knowledge of what is current and innovative when it comes to the creation of a kitchen and can even advise and inform you of the latest kitchen appliance technology. Make a visit to the Rozen workshop at Ruan Minor, where you can see and feel samples of worktops in granite, wood and Silestone and should you wish to include curves on your kitchen cabinets, they have some incredibly beautiful Italian laminates. The workshop provides pure inspiration, whether your persuasion lies in a contemporary design or you favour
a more traditional style; getting hands-on and being able to closely examine the display units allows you to appreciate the sheer quality and individual beauty of a hand built Rozen kitchen. With sustainability a key factor in the production of your kitchen, Rozen are committed to using only wood from sustainable sources. A showcase of kitchens that have been expertly designed and built by the Rozen workshop can be seen on the company’s website, where you can browse and admire the skilful craftsmanship and intricate, bespoke detail. We hear from the experts at Carpet Connection and discover the relative pros and cons of vinyl and carpet flooring.
W
hen it comes to renovating your home, the amount of options out there – the plethora of materials, styles and finishes – can make it hard to narrow down your search. One of the bigger decisions to consider when choosing your flooring is whether to go for hard flooring or carpet. There are a variety of hard floor options but the one that we’ve chosen to cover is vinyl as this is cheaper than hardwood, easier to install and easier to maintain. Obviously, the major difference with flooring is whether to go for hard or soft. o you want the cosy comfort of carpet, or the clean lines of hard flooring inyl flooring offers both a stylish and practical solution thanks to it being hardwearing and easy to clean, and it’s now increasingly popular in kitchens and bathrooms as well as other areas of the home. Comparably, carpet is usually installed in living rooms and bedrooms thanks to its heat retaining properties and general comfort. For vinyl you have a choice between wood and tile effect; as well as stripes, spots and plains, and there are a variety of different threads and finishes for your carpet as well. We hear from Carpet Connection Manager, Kevin Williams who tells us There are relative pros and cons between vinyl and
carpet, with each being more convenient in different areas of your home. With this being said, the best move is often to combine the two. inyl for high impact areas such as kitchens and bathrooms and carpet in the cosy corners of the home.” As a robust alternative to sheet vinyl and wood flooring, luxury vinyl tiling is a worthy option when it comes to choosing a floor and can add a sophisticated feel to your space. Luxury vinyl is particularly useful when you have an open-plan kitchen and living room, as spillages and smells from the kitchen can be cleaned up easily whereas carpet would be harder to maintain. t’s important to remember that the feel of your floor has a major impact too. To make the decision process even easier, a trip to the Carpet Connection showroom in Helston comes highly recommended, where you can talk to the team and peruse the collections for yourself.

hen it comes to selling your house, it might be a surprise that furnishings are a major draw for buyers. You may be asking yourself “Why does it matter how my property’s furnished?’ It’s simple - furnished properties attract more buyers, sell faster and will typically achieve a higher price. The difference is staggering - staged homes spend on average half the time on the market compared to nonstaged homes, and generally sell over 8% above asking price.
Present your property to its best advantage when selling with beautiful furniture from Rustic House. This is especially important for developers of new homes, where the target buyers will be the property’s first owners. But how to encourage these buyers to see how they could use the space, and convey the feeling of a home – not just a house – without having to furnish the home at huge expense? We hear from Emily Hawken, whose business, Rustic House, offers a home staging service that can help your property stand out, sell quickly, and also save you thousands of pounds.

Emily tells us Buyers can struggle to envisage a property as their new home when it’s marketed without furniture, but the additional expense of furnishing a property is often not a possibility. For this reason, we’re offering customers the opportunity to furnish a property ready for sale without the need to purchase all of the furniture.” Located in Par, just outside the picturesque seaside town of Fowey, the Rustic House showroom is beautifully designed; it’s hard not to daydream about having a home full of the gorgeous products tastefully arranged inside. So how does it work? Rustic House will charge you a fixed fee of 1,5 , for which you can fully furnish your property. This includes a member of the team visiting your property and working with you to plan the interior design; they will then put together a furniture package for your property and arrange a delivery date. Emily explains: “On the delivery day, we will take care of everything – unpacking, assembling and arranging all the furniture. We’ll also provide a detailed inventory and price list to be included with your property details for your buyers. If your buyer chooses to purchase the entire furniture package from us, we’ll refund your deposit in full. If not, then we will come and collect all the furniture – you won’t need to lift a finger. It’s a system with clear results. Rustic House customer Richard Fisher tells us: “As a small scale property developer, we have
always struggled to find a cost effective way to show potential buyers how a house can be used. We didn’t want to buy furniture in case the buyers didn’t want it and we would have to sell it at a significant loss or pay to store it. At the same time, having a house properly dressed really helps to maximise the sales value and reduce the time it’s on the market. In smaller houses it lets people see that the rooms are large enough for purpose, and in large houses (especially open plan ones), it shows how the space can be used. Rustic House were perfect for what we needed. Now we can affordably furnish each house individually and have already seen great results thanks to their efforts.” If you’re looking for an affordable way to present your property to it best advantage for sale, Rustic House’s service provides everything you could need, enabling you to show off your space without forking out for a whole set of new furniture. If you’re interested and would like to find out more be sure to take a look at the website. Better still, why not pay a visit to the showroom in Par, see the range of unique, handcrafted furniture for yourself, and discuss your options over a cup of coffee?

By using waste such as plastic drinks bottles, food packaging and straws, ltco is able to utilise these forms of plastic waste by converting them into resin-bound driveways. n fact, each s uare metre of ecycle Bound consists of the e uivalent of 3, plastic straws Therefore, if ecycle Bound was laid on a standard 5 s uare metre drive, it would recycle the e uivalent of 15 , plastic straws in the process. elcome to Porthleven! In recent times, Porthleven has become something of a hotspot for visitors and locals alike. Recognisable by its iconic clocktower overlooking the pier and Mount’s Bay beyond, not only is it a fabulous destination for a seaside break, it’s also up there as
one of Cornwall’s top destinations for food. In celebration of this foodie prestige, the port is also home to the annual Porthleven Food Festival, which continues to grow in popularity every year. For those looking to explore pastures new this autumn and winter – particularly in the run up to December as we start ticking off our Christmas lists – Porthleven boasts an eclectic array of independent shops, cafés and restaurants, allowing for a healthy dose of retail therapy, with delicious options for lunch and dinner in between. Lying on the South West Coast Path, Porthleven holds a special place in our hearts, which is why in this issue we’ve decided to showcase Porthleven’s finest – to give you an idea of how special the home of Cornwall Living really is!

Essa Collection
Chic and independent, Essa Collection is a thriving family business based in Porthleven. Run by Vanessa Stevens and her husband John with the help of her mum Laura and daughter Rebekah, the family business continues over three generations and stocks a brilliant selection of women’s clothing and accessories. Rebekah provides a younger perspective on styles, adding to the already beautiful range of clothing that suits women of all ages. Vanessa tells us: “All our clothes are hand selected and because we mostly buy only one of each, it’s a very exclusive collection to choose from.” The autumn collection features the unique tree style dress, available in a range of colours and styles, as well as jewellery, socks, hats, gloves and scarves, plus a new range of children’s clothes made in Falmouth – providing more than enough Christmas gift inspiration! Essa is also pleased to announce that it will be hosting a fashion show in aid of the Porthleven bowling club on 29th October, displaying the autumn range at its best. Essa is going from strength to strength and has become a firm favourite among
locals and holidaymakers alike thanks to its welcoming boutique style, beautiful products and personal service. So next time you’re in Porthleven, make sure to fit in a visit

Stargazey Gifts and Home Stargazey Gifts and Home on Fore Street, Porthleven, is a few yards up the hill between the Twisted Currant Tea Room and the Corner eli, and is the perfect place to find that special gift or accessory for your home.
Deb Bramwell opened Stargazey almost seven years ago and it’s clear to see that she has a talent for sourcing gorgeous products from artists and small design companies based in Cornwall and further afield. Stargazey has a calm, clean style with that ‘hygge’ feel that so many of us want to achieve in our homes. Specialising in bespoke mirrors and lamps handmade in Cornwall, along with a wonderful array of cushions, throws, and wall art, this is the place to come to find that finishing touch for your home, or the perfect gift for that special someone. Deb is currently working on preparations for the Stargazey Christmas Window – always a beautiful sight. This year the window will have a coastal theme, very appropriate for the wild storm watchers that Porthleven attracts. The window will be revealed during October half term, but don’t wait until then to visit; Stargazey is open every day of the week all year round, with a warm welcome for everyone.

Amélies
Gaze out through the glass-fronted restaurant doors of Amélies and it’s easy to be hypnotised by the boats in the harbour, gently bobbing at anchor. Amélies is one of the top restaurants in Porthleven, being one of the original restaurants to inspire and create the town's reputation as one of Cornwall's top foodie destinations. The talented team of chefs nurture an ethos that incorporates fish caught just yards from the door, which is both seasonal and sustainable. The menu itself is inspired by the sunshine of the Mediterranean, mixed with the beauty of the Cornish coast. or pescatarians, m lies fish is simple, packed full of flavour and, often, cooked in the team’s wood-fired oven. Sometimes when the call of the sunny harbour is too much to bear, they cook it outside on the barbeque. Whether you’re dining on the lobster plucked fresh from the waves, or tucking into one of the teams award-winning Sunday roasts cooked overnight in the wood-fired oven , Amélies boasts a very special atmosphere that you simply won’t find anywhere else. t’s also a licensed wedding venue – turn to page 67 to find out more.

Make the most of a wedding by the water, from coast to coast, with Harbour Hotels.
A
ll Harbour Hotels are known for their stunning locations, and the Fowey and Padstow Harbour Hotels are no exception. Nestled into the west bank of the river Fowey, with panoramic views over Fowey estuary, the Fowey Harbour Hotel is a 37-room boutique hotel situated on Cornwall’s south coast. Similarly, The Padstow Harbour hotel is located on Cornwall’s north coast, featuring picture-perfect views of Padstow Harbour and the Camel Estuary beyond. Both hotels have recently received full renovations, adding vibrant, colourful and contemporary interiors throughout – influenced by the coastal surroundings with an exotic twist inspired by world travel. The Padstow Harbour Hotel is perched above the small fishing port of Padstow, a harbour town famous for its foodie scene and that must rank as one of Cornwall’s most charismatic and atmospheric destinations, providing the ideal setting for you to tie the knot. The hotel’s impressive events space offers an abundance of natural light and stunning period features, perfect for small or large wedding ceremonies, breakfasts and receptions, seating up to 80 guests. The floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with natural daylight and offer a breathtaking backdrop of Padstow harbour.
Likewise, within the Fowey Harbour Hotel, most bedrooms and public areas enjoy stunning estuary and harbour views. The newly restored exterior features a gorgeous wraparound terrace, two tiered gardens, an upper garden situated next to the hotel and a lower garden right at the water’s edge. Famous for its sailing waters, Fowey provides the opportunity for you to get out on the water or head to the nearby Roseland peninsula – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – for a romantic stroll. As in Padstow, The Fowey Harbour Hotel’s beautiful main events space, The Marine Room, comes with period features, an abundance of natural light and stunning harbour views. It’s suitable for wedding ceremonies, wedding breakfasts or a reception for up 60 guests. Receptions and photo shoots can be held outside on the terrace or upper garden (both bathing in that spectacular panoramic vista), or inside, in the cosy lounge and bar. For those all important photos, where better than in the lower garden on the water’s edge? Whichever wedding package you choose, the hotels both have a dedicated events team on hand who strive to make your special day unforgettable for you, your friends and your family. With bespoke packages tailor-made to suit your requirements, and a designated

KINDER EVENTS
H
idden down country lanes, or nestled high on coastal cliffs, Wild Tipi create truly memorable days that are impossible to forget. And with one eye firmly on the environment, the company is also making great strides to reduce its carbon footprint and help others planning a wedding or event to do the same. All Wild Tipis are made in the UK from sustainably sourced English pine, and the team behind the business are constantly evolving to make their offering kinder to the environment. The latest ‘small change’ is to switch from single use cable ties to reusable elcro ties. They have also just set up a Wild Tipi eco-weddings forum; allowing couples who are tying the knot to make more environmentally conscious choices when it comes to choosing suppliers and services. So, how could you be more environmentally friendly when planning your own wedding or event ere are ild Tipi’s Top ive Tips irst of all, choose local – this will drastically reduce the carbon footprint and support your local community too. Next, go digital; forget paper invitations and go for a digital version instead – kinder on the environment and your pocket too. Thirdly, it’s time to streamline your guest list, as the biggest impact on the environment is the carbon footprint created by travel. f you can’t cut back on the miles travelled, you could link to a carbon offset programme in your invitations to help reduce the impact this way.
Reduce, reuse and up-cycle: there are countless ways to reduce the waste produced by a wedding or event. Using bamboo plates and cutlery is a great way to ensure your banquet is wholly recyclable. Upcycling wooden pallets, choosing second-hand decor items or opting for ethically sourced clothing are just some of the ways you can make your event greener. ild Tipi can help by supplying compostable bags for food waste and support you with recycling after an event. inally, do your research finding environmentally conscious suppliers doesn’t need to be a struggle nor does it mean compromising on quality or style. The Wild Tipi team is always on hand to suggest some amazing Cornish companies, from eco-florists to fair-trade wedding dress designers; they are happy to help you wherever they can.

G OURMET We catch up with all the latest news from some of our favourite chefs, eateries, hotels and pubs.
A toast to autumn!
Although the autumn can be a bit topsy-turvy in the wine trade, it is nonetheless a wonderful time to pop into Wadebridge Wines, where the team are keeping a keen eye on this season’s Northern Hemisphere harvests. They’re also enjoying the 2019 vintages starting to come in from the Southern Hemisphere, particularly those from New Zealand’s Otago Felton Road. Whether you’re seeking the perfect autumn red or white, hoping to buy a bespoke hamper or corporate gift, or are looking for inspiration from the growing list of spirit, cocktail and aperitif recipes, it’s fair to say that the choice this year is vast! What’s more, the autumn master classes are due to begin, culminating in the legendary Annual Wine Tasting at the Royal Cornwall Showground. Taking place on 20th November, admission is free and tickets are available in store, so be sure not to miss it! For more information call 01208 812692 or visit www.wadebridgewines.co.uk

Autumn warmers at The Lemon Arms
When exploring Mylor, there’s a great selection of hidden creeks, picturesque walks and a spacious playground to make the most of. Then after your outdoor excursions, we recommend heading to The Lemon Arms at the top of Mylor Bridge to cosy down and enjoy a quiet pint or a sit-down meal. The welcoming pub has a great selection of local ales, ciders and beers as well as a menu full of homemade delights. The food is a real draw with a great specials board alongside all the pub classics. We did a little digging and found this review from one happy customer: “We had a wonderful Sunday lunch with drinks,

introduces Head Chef, Joseph Fallowfield
Delicious dining at The Park
The Park Cornwall’s onsite restaurant – the Kitchen by the Beach – provides fantastic food cooked exceptionally well, and all at affordable prices! Everything is cooked with passion and, whether you’re there for breakfast, coffee and a slice of cake after a swim, or stopping for lunch or dinner, all food is fresh and seasonal. The soft play area provides kids with the chance to let off some steam while the adults chill out; not to mention it’s also dog friendly, so your four legged friends can make themselves at home as well!
The Lizard peninsula has always been a destination for those seeking dramatic rugged coastlines, brisk sea air and secluded coves. Now, it’s also home to one of the most exciting and upcoming chefs in Cornwall – oseph allowfield. Previously from the Square, Kota and the Michelin starred Elephant restaurant, Joseph has taken over as Head Chef at the Housel Bay Hotel. The signature restaurant ‘ allowfields’ gained two AA rosettes within weeks of opening, which stands testament to the exceptional quality of food on offer. The restaurant also offers a five-course tasting menu, with each dish highlighting produce from the peninsula. When discussing one of his favourite dishes Joseph tells us: “What started as an experiment, The Baked Alaska has now become a staple on the menu. We make it with saffron cake, clotted cream, orange curd and serve it with a small glass of iced wine. It’s rich, decadent and sums up everything I love about cooking.” For more information call 01326 567500 or visit www.houselbay.com
Michael Corbin, the Kitchen’s Head Chef, boasts extensive experience from working in restaurants across the Duchy, and in his home country, South Africa,
before crafting his culinary skills as Head Chef at an award-winning 2 AA Rosette hotel in Padstow. For more information call 01637 860594 or visit www.theparkcornwall.com
Great taste at Tim’s Place Situated just back from the River Camel in Wadebridge, Tim’s Place presents a great selection of homemade Cornish goodness to enjoy. Open for breakfast and lunch, the menu is full of mouthwatering dishes comprised of fresh, locally sourced produce. Equally, if you simply fancy a coffee and something sweet, all Tim’s treats are freshly baked in house, with a variety of pastries, cookies and cake to choose from. We recommend a morning stroll along the river and then coffee and breakfast at Tim’s Place – the American style pancakes are a personal favourite of mine and go down very nicely with a freshly brewed coffee!
Or, spend the morning at one of the nearby beaches and head to Tim’s Place for lunch. With a menu packed full of great dishes – whatever tickles your fancy, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your appetite at Tim’s Place.

Autumn is gently beginning to rear its damp, miserable and unperturbed head, but amongst the horror of losing the only brief period of sun the UK receives, there is a silver lining: fresh, woody and intensely flavoured wild mushrooms. ousel Bay ead Chef, oseph allowfield, tells us Their gentle sweetness works perfectly with a fresh and fluffy crumpet. dd a knob of Cornish butter, freshly chopped parsley and a touch of garlic and you are in for a treat.”
Made from only the freshest local ingredients, including locally sourced halibut, this is a truly seasonal dish, one that ticks all the boxes for those in the mood for a fuss-free, honest plate of food. ven baked with Cornish seaweed, served with salsa verde and red pesto – all made from Cornish grown ingredients – a balance of bitter and sweet, with the vibrancy of colour, really complements the fish.

Seafood Chowder
Rebellion Roasthouse & Moonshine Bar One of the most, if not the most popular and most commented upon dish at ebellion oast ouse is the indefatigable and timeless Seafood Chowder. The guys at Rebellion start off making this with the timeless combination of onions, garlic and smoked bacon, then fennel seeds and fish stock, finished off by simmering it for a while with Cornish potatoes, corn and double cream. Then, to order, they pan fry the fish and shellfish, some brown crab meat and add the chowder base.
Pollock with crab sauce, potatoes and chard
Dan’s Cornish Kitchen
Pollock sometimes gets forgotten as a great alternative to cod, but an, founder of an’s Cornish itchen, loves its texture and the fact that it’s a wonderful, locally caught fish. Putting it together with a rich crab sauce to add a creamy sweetness with a bit of heat, together with some tasty Cornish potatoes and chard – this is the sort of dish an has been cooking for years in Cornwall, be it for wedding breakfasts, private dinners, or even down the local pub.
ead Chef, im hatcott says ur Chowder showcases some of the finest fish Cornwall has to offer. Mussels from St ustell, owey or Porthilly, ake, Cod, hiting, Crab – it’s all there.
Pollock often gets sniffed at as a bit of a ‘lesser’ fish, an tells us, but think the humble Cornish pollock can stand proud – fin to fin – with the likes of cod and haddock. Maybe you should try it for yourself!”

GROUNDBREAKING COFFEE Introducing the Cornico Coffee Company’s speciality Zero Waste Coffee.
RIGHT ì Andrew and Martyn share a passion for great, sustainable coffee BELOW ê Supporting a sustainable future with biodegradable packaging
C
ornico was originally founded by business friends Martyn Fraser and Andrew Tobin. Martyn tells us: “A huge amount of care and attention goes into everything we do, and we are really proud to introduce our speciality Zero Waste Coffee, which is hand roasted in our own custom-made coffee roaster here in Cornwall.” For Cornico, coffee quality is much more than just the flavour in the cup. It’s as much about environmental and social sustainability – something Martyn explains is “at the heart of everything we do.” Dedicated to reducing their negative impact on the planet and supporting the communities that take part in the coffee production process, Andrew explains: “Over 500,000 tons of waste coffee grounds are disposed of in landfill each year, where they speed up the decomposition of other organic waste, thereby releasing methane more rapidly. “These spent coffee grounds are an abundant, energy rich resource that should not end up in our landfills, continues Andrew, “so we collect the waste coffee from our customers and send it off to be turned into fuel logs and soil improver, thus reducing our customers’ carbon footprint further.” But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Cornico is always thinking about the environment, which reflects in everything they do. The boxes the team take deliveries in, for instance,
are biodegradable, and the tape they use is made from cellulose. The coffee bags are oxo-biodegradable; even the labels are made from hemp and sugar cane, which means that 100 years from now, there will not be bags branded with Cornico’s logo in landfill. Cornico’s Head of Coffee, Tom Chambers continues: “Our coffee is small batch roasted, which ensures we can monitor and analyse every roast profile, making sure we unlock all the flavours of sweetness, acidity and body! “We source high-quality coffee that has been curated to make sure that it has exactly what we’re looking for. Green coffee before it is roasted is at its best when it is fresh – when all those delicious berry, chocolate, citrus or other tasting notes are most prevalent and punchy. For this reason, we buy coffee when it’s in season, so our customers can expect to see our offering frequently adapt and evolve with the time of year.” To put it simply, if there’s one message to take away from all of this it’s one that Tom sums up perfectly. As he puts it: “Great coffee doesn’t have to cost the Earth!”

A ROARING WELCOME
Enjoy local ales, scrumptious homemade food and resting by the wood burner this winter at The Red Lion Blackwater.
S
ituated close to the Heritage Coast, between Truro and the golden sands of Porthtowan, The Red Lion in Blackwater has fast become the popular choice when it comes to a good, old-fashioned winter warmer. After blowing away the cobwebs on the nearby beaches and watching the sun sink into the sea, is there a finer way than warming your toes near the wood burner and your cockles at the bar? A hearty welcome comes as standard from The Red Lion team, who have created a string of exciting events and incentives to help keep the cold air firmly outside this winter. With ‘happenings’ occurring most evenings, you can munch homemade pizza whilst playing bingo, enjoy a comforting curry, indulge in a sizzling steak night and of course, there is always ‘Pizza Saturday’. The delicious home-cooked menu is served daily at lunch and dinner, with weekends seeing food served all day, and a visit to The Red Lion would not be complete without indulging in the perfect Sunday roast, which is even available to takeaway. Steeped in super positive reviews, one happy foodie comments: “What a delightful evening we had here. The food was great and
the ales were to die for. Warm, friendly and very comfortable surroundings helped to pass the time so happily.” Sourcing local is key at The Red Lion, where at the bar you can expect to find a selection of delicious local ales and Cornish spirits, and for the discerning caffeine connoisseur, why not indulge in a hot cup of artisan coffee, lovingly created and supplied by Olfactory Roasters – based just twenty minutes down the road in Penryn. Christmas at the Red Lion really is the most wonderful time of the year, offering a delectable festive menu, perfect for your Christmas party and joyous celebrations. Demand for beautiful holiday homes has never been higher
C
ornwall’s popularity as a holiday destination continues to grow every year. It’s a go-to destination for art lovers and foodies, and is the perfect place for those looking to explore rugged coastlines, charming fishing villages and long country walks. For those who own a holiday home here, this translates into a world of un-tapped potential, one that could help fund holidays, home projects – you name it – that you’ve been dreaming of for years. In order to really get the most out of it, the key is to start thinking now about next summer. This is where HomeAway comes in – a world-leading holiday rental marketplace that specialises in maximising the potential of both second homes and primary residences. As part of the well-known Expedia group, HomeAway ensures your listing has unparalleled visibility, also ensuring your peace of mind via liability insurance that keeps you covered all the way. All the signs are showing that demand for short-term rental properties – particularly those close to event venues – is on the rise; only recently, thousands of homeowners were able to reap the rewards through HomeAway during the Cricket World Cup. But to turn your home into the serious earner that it has the potential to be, you
absolutely need to get it in front of as many eyes as possible – as soon as you possibly can. So what’s the rush? Well, for one, it’s always good to be ahead of the game – to snap up bookings from those who are hoping to secure their dream getaway far in advance. Secondly, you may or may not be aware that Cornwall has been announced as the host for 2020’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain (the UK’s biggest bike race), with riders set to pass through St Just, St Ives, Hayle, Camborne, Pool, Redruth, Falmouth, Penryn, Truro, Newquay, St Austell and the Eden Project. When you consider the droves of spectators who’re sure to flock to Cornwall for this prestigious event, many in search of places to stay, the benefits of getting your home rental-ready really do speak for themselves! If you’re interested to learn more about how much your property could earn (and who could blame you?), why not get the ball rolling by trying out HomeAway’s ‘How much could you earn?’ calculator? You never know, it may just be the beginnings of a brand new lifestyle.

SUITE SUCCESS We hear the story of how Tim and Heather Wood created the Oceanic Suite Hotel – one of Cornwall’s most laid-back luxury retreats.
H
aving been presented with the opportunity to create a lifestyle business eight years ago, since then, Tim tells us: “It’s become so much more than that – a fantastic family home and a venture we are deeply proud of.” The Oceanic Hotel has allowed Tim and Heather to make many new friends, giving them great satisfaction in that their guests absolutely love what they do. Their lifestyle, it would seem, has also been transformed. As Tim puts it: “We now have a boat... and the time to enjoy it!” So, why Falmouth? “We chose to settle in Falmouth for many reasons, reveals Tim. “Not only did we move for the town’s history and sailing heritage; it is a growing university town too, with an abundance of excellent restaurants, quirky bars and a varied calendar of events, food celebrations and sailing regattas. It is not a town that sleeps through the winter, plus it consistently ranks in the top 10 places in the UK to live!” Discussing the hotel’s development, Tim explains: “There were challenges! The building that we bought was virtually derelict, but it gave us the opportunity to start afresh with a modern take on the traditional hotel model. The position was perfect – a short walk into town but not so close as to be noisy; an even shorter walk to the beach with a variety of activities on offer, an excellent beachfront café and an historic Tudor castle
with beautiful views over the estuary – all virtually on our doorstep.” When developing the hotel’s concept, they made a list of all the best (and worst) things that they had experienced in other hotels, and then settled on the name. Since opening its doors, the Oceanic has received a multitude of awards from The Luxury Travel Guide, TripAdvisor’s ‘Traveller’s Choice’, and South West Enterprise, to name just a few. The hotel only offers five luxuriously appointed, spacious suites, making for a very bespoke and personal guest experience. “We like to describe it as ‘your own private home from home with all the benefits of a five-star hotel – a place where you can kick your shoes off and completely relax, knowing that everything will be taken care of.’ or us, Tim finishes, we love entertaining and have enjoyed many an evening chatting to guests in the communal bar, hot tub and garden areas. And our commute to work – less than 30 seconds!”

REVELLING
The tempo is slowing down in the lead up to the colder months but there are still loads of great events on.
O
ctober in Cornwall is sublime; the seas are warmer than ever thanks to months of summer sunshine, yet the beaches are void of crowds. Cloudless blue skies are met early by darker evenings, making nights in your luxurious home from home all the more inviting. Oh, and did we mention Halloween? So where to get started? Whether you’re here for a whirlwind short break or for the full week, October half term in Cornwall is full of the promise of freedom, play and adventure. Don your woollies, embrace the holiday vibes and get ready to make memories to last a lifetime. If you have youngsters in tow, there are loads of ways to pass relaxed mornings and fun-filled afternoons this ctober. Should you have a mini Monet or petite Picasso amongst your gaggle, make your way to the Tate St Ives. Hosting the excellent Tate Create ‘Tattoo You’ between 20th and 28th October, your little artists can set to work creating a life-size figure and tattooing it with gorgeous designs inspired by the gallery’s exhibitions. Of course, we can’t forget that Halloween is looming around the corner. With a whole range of wicked events to get stuck into, sugar plum fairies, ghoulish ghosts and hornswoggling pirates alike are invited to have a fiendishly good time. great one for all the family, Halloweden takes place between Saturday 19th October and Sunday 3rd November 2019 at the Eden Project; come face-to-face with mythical beasts (including Sapphire the dragon) and browse the medieval market place for goods.
Elsewhere over half term, Pendennis Castle is hosting a Creepy Critters spectacular along with a spooktacular Halloween quest around the castle, while DairyLand is inviting Halloweeners to join in with pumpkin carving and crafty workshops. For more ‘defrightful’ events, the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth is putting on craft making, storytelling and performances during ‘Silhouettes and Shadows’, and both Camel Creek dventure Park and Flambards are topping off their half term Halloween specials with superb firework extravaganzas. October in Cornwall isn’t just about Halloween though, and if you’re here a little earlier, there are plenty of other things going on to pique your interest. Pencil in Truro’s Oktoberfest on 5th October, Falmouth Oyster Festival between 10th and 13th October, and the North Cornwall Book Festival on that same weekend. Lap up the atmosphere and fill your days with as much or as little as you please. fter all, you’re on holiday

The charity's nurses are key to the care it delivers
espite challenging economic times Cornwall Hospice Care leaders have committed to opening more beds at both hospices. Four more have already opened meaning there are now nine at the charity’s Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and nine at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle, with more planned to open later this year. The Director of Clinical Services, Gina Starnes, tells us: “In my 30 year nursing career ’ve seen first hand the difference that hospices make, giving patients and their families the peace, dignity and specialised care they need. As the only adult hospice charity in Cornwall we know there are many more families who would benefit from our care so we’ve been investing in our staff and facilities so we can open more beds.” However, such plans come at a cost and at a time when the Cornish charity has felt the challenges of the current economic climate. David Renwick, the Chair of Cornwall Hospice Care, explains: “We can only open more beds with the support of the public. I’m appealing to everyone in Cornwall to help us so we can support more people with terminal illnesses.” The charity has launched an appeal to help fund the increased nursing costs to support the extra beds as Oli Hoare, Head of Fundraising, explains: “As a 24/7 charity our
nurses are key to the care we deliver. To help us continue their vital work we’re asking people for £20 to fund an hour of that care and we hope they will help us achieve our desire to have 20 beds open by the end of the year.” As the charity prepares to mark the 40th anniversary in 2020 of providing adult hospice care to the people of Cornwall, it recently launched its latest Impact Report, detailing what the charity has achieved in the last year and what its plans are for the financial year ahead. Chief Executive, Paul Brinsley tells us: “We’re always appreciative of the support people give us, but now we need an extra boost to meet the demands. I welcome the news from the government about more funding being available for hospices. We’re working hard to ensure that Cornwall benefits from this so we can hopefully increase the NHS contribution towards our care from our current 19.1%, closer to the 32% average for England.”

e hear from Bluebird Care carer Emma, who enjoyed her time in hospitality but now says: “Working in care has been the best decision and career move I ever made. Every day is different, every day is rewarding and every day I smile, seeing my client's smile.” People need care for different reasons, and being trained and able to provide that care is extremely rewarding. Supporting someone to take their first steps after a stroke, hearing a client’s story about their life, taking them shopping and stopping for coffee as their companion; helping them get dressed into their special outfit that they’ve chosen for seeing their family that day, making their favourite meal and having time to enjoy it with them, taking them to the beach and feeling the sand on their toes, or helping them exercise so that they can show their family that they are becoming more able – these are just some of the things that make care an incredible career. “I think that care work is sometimes stereotyped in negative ways, and we need to come away from this because it is the most gratifying feeling being able to care and support someone so they can stay living in their own home,” says Emma. Statistics show that those who consciously help others are
happier and healthier than those who don’t, but Emma is also realistic and knows the life ABOVE Explore Cornwall of a carer isn’t always easy. “Care does come with early mornings, late nights, working in and enjoy the great outdoors with your all weathers, doing your fair share of shifts clients at Christmas – plus seeing people recovering é INSET or dealing with illness and disabilities can Carers John and sometimes be heart-wrenching. But knowing Caroline raise a you are there to help alongside others that proud to care are just as passionate about care makes it banner all worthwhile.” Bluebird Care welcomes newcomers to join the caring profession and believes people with experience in other areas often make the best carers, bringing their knowledge and understanding to the fore. However, Bluebird Care is also happy to provide the full training required to give you the knowledge and confidence needed to work in care.

LD SO “I have had dealings with a wide range of estate agents over several years but Rohrs & Rowe have really stood out. Their advice was rational and concise from the start and their presentation of my property was in a different class. Throughout the sale, I always dealt with one of the Directors ... I would not hesitate to recommend them.”

“We were recommended to Rohrs & Rowe following a friends very positive experiences of selling through them. We met with several agents but upon meeting Matthew he filled me with great confidence that we’d met the right person for the job. Their photography showed my cliff top house at its best and their marketing strategies and ideas were also far superior to anyone else we met with. He very quickly did what he said he would do and agreed a sale at a very good price.”

CHARITY |
SHINE AND
DINE
This winter, host your own fundraising dinner, supporting families after disaster.
A
s winter looms around the corner, bringing shorter days and darker nights, we stay cosy, enjoy good food and good company. But when disaster strikes, families flee their homes in search of a safer place – which is often an overcrowded space with no power. Having somewhere dry and warm to sleep, to prepare meals and be with your family, is vital for starting the long process of recovery. Cornish disaster relief charity, ShelterBox invites you to host a ‘Shine for Shelterbox’ dinner this winter: share a meal with your friends and family, with a simple fundraising goal of helping ShelterBox provide solar lights, emergency shelter and other essential items to support families after disaster. Charlotte Mansell, who recently held her own ‘Shine’ dinner, explains: “I raised £162 and had the loveliest evening with some of my oldest friends. It felt nice doing such a good thing, but also having so much fun in the process!” For people who have survived disasters, family meals help to provide the framework for everyday life and restore a sense of normality. Your ‘Shine’ dinner could help families re-establish their normal routine,
and even provide solar lights to help transform a shelter into a home. Maria in the Philippines uses her family’s lights to restore their routine: “My children are able to use the solar lights a lot. It helps them wake up and get ready for school in the morning, and for my youngest, she is now more comfortable with a light on at night when she sleeps.” ShelterBox’s unique visitor centre in Truro is a must-see, immersing you in the world of disaster relief. You can pick up a Shine pack, find out about the latest disaster responses and explore the aid items your Shine dinner could provide. This October half term, you’ll also be able to catch ‘Hurricanes in Virtual Reality’ – a VR experience allowing you to follow in the footsteps of the world’s most powerful storms. Hear from hurricane survivors and witness the devastation they cause, before discovering how ShelterBox responds to the world’s worst natural disasters.
