Starting off at Trelissick car park, this route takes you inland through woodlands and grazed farmland. Roundwood Quay has echoes of its defensive and industrial past and while you’re there, you’ll spot any number of bird species that flock to the foreshore, including oystercatchers, curlews, lapwings, fieldfares and kestrels. This is a perfect walk for blowing away the cobwebs, so if you’ve been cooped up out of the cold so far this autumn, be sure to visit the National Trust website and discover the full route.

Longer and healthier lives are one of modern medicine’s greatest achievements, however it also means growing numbers are supporting partners or family with dementia. Of course, you want to be there and care for your loved ones, but you also need support, so you can pop to the shops, or visit friends and family, even just to take a break for some sea air. But how can you do this when you need to keep a constant eye on your loved one? Live-in Companionship Care is a lifestyle choice for many who want to remain in the comfort of their own home but welcome a little support when needed.

Cars and capers for Cornish charity Summer has been full of successful fundraising events for Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care. There was the hugely popular Mount Edgcumbe American & Classic Car Show and Summer Fair in August and a fantastic ‘It’s A Knockout’ competition in September. Jointly organised by Cornwall Hospice Care and the Friends of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, the classic car event on the banks of the Tamar this year attracted over 800 vehicles. In September, 13 teams met at Truro Cricket Club for ‘It’s A Knockout’, competing on various inflatable obstacles. Eventual winners were Aspire Gymnasium from Truro who won by just one point ahead of Lifestar Medical (also

from Truro), who took second place. Special mention should go to the Charlie’s Angels team from the Co-op in Cornwall who raised more than £3,200 in memory of a colleague. For more information call 01726 839156 or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

What do you need for a break away? Secluded coves, coast path walks, and rural beauty close to the fishing village of Mevagissey – so come to Bodrugan and stay in a comfy ensuite wooden cabin with views of 40 miles of coastline and an indoor heated swimming pool. Watch the stars and snuggle up by the firepit.

20 YEARS OF SHELTER

2020 marks the 20th anniversary of Cornish disaster relief charity ShelterBox, in which time it has supported more than 1.5 million people around the world after disaster.

S

helterBox was launched in 2000 by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard. This group of passionate volunteers investigated the emergency items people need and worked to understand transport and logistics. They spoke to manufacturers and found a sturdy box. They then visited the Rotary International Conference to drum up support, the initial hope being to help eight-to-ten families a year, with each box containing a family sized tent, sleeping bags, water purifying tablets, trenching tool and pots and pans. ShelterBox’s first response was to support families affected by the 2001 earthquake in Gujarat, India. 20 years later, ShelterBox has grown to become a respected humanitarian organisation providing emergency shelter, essential items and support to over 1.5 million people across 97 countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, with fundraising teams in 15 different countries. And the charity continues to go further and reach more people by working with a range of influential partners, including the International Federation of Red Cross and the International Organisation for Migration. The need for emergency shelter is now more urgent than ever. In fact, 88 million people are currently living without shelter after disaster or conflict. But thanks to its

supporters and fundraisers, ShelterBox will ë ABOVE Supporting continue to work hard to meet its original goal: helping families to rebuild after disaster. families around the world in the wake Innovation is at the heart of this impressive of disaster charity’s work, and it’s always searching for é INSET ways to improve. Indeed, ShelterBox teams Enjoy the are always out gathering feedback from Visitor Centre's people they’ve supported, then working interactive exhibits to improve the aid items they provide, including blankets, tents and solar lanterns. If you’d like to learn more about ShelterBox, its founding story, its aid items and the impact of its work, you can visit the headquarters in Truro. ShelterBox’s Disaster Relief Visitor Centre is fast becoming one of Cornwall’s most unique attractions – welcoming over 9,000 visitors in 2019 alone. Families are sure to enjoy trying to pack a ShelterBox, and interactive exhibits showcase the positive impact of the charity’s work. The best part is that admission is free! I

n an age when lives are busy, digital distractions are many and expectations are high in life and work, we all need to find a little ‘me time’. And where better to do so than in one of Cornwall’s stunning spas? We’ve selected just a few that are leading the way in wellbeing in the Westcountry. Perched high on the cliff above Fistral beach in Newquay stands The Headland Hotel & Spa (headlandhotel.co.uk). The impressive, Grade II listed building stands sentinel on the clifftop, giving way to an interior that harks back to its glamorous, Victorian roots. The hotel itself exudes traditional luxury – think dark wood, gleaming brass and sink-into sofas, with a view of the Atlantic rollers that is hard to beat. The Headland’s spa, however, is a juxtaposition of style. As you descend the sweeping staircase down to the spa, leaving old world opulence behind, you are transported to a modern haven of tranquillity and beauty, that boasts a 'Five-Bubble' award for its facilities.

The spa’s central feature is its hydrotherapy pool, which is surrounded by a steam room, sauna, Jacuzzi and a range of showers to invigorate or soothe, depending on your preference. You are free to take your time here, letting the various water therapies wash over you. An ‘inner sanctuary’ houses the massage and rhassoul rooms and, for the ultimate in romantic relaxation, there is also a couples’ massage and Jacuzzi suite. Each highlytrained therapist can tailor treatments to your individual needs and after your treatment you are free to let your cares slip away in the relaxation room, as you sip on a herbal tea and are soothed by gentle music, while wrapped in a soft blanket. The spa also has its own restaurant, where you can enjoy the same award-winning food from the hotel but in a more informal setting – lunching in your robe is the ultimate way to continue your relaxation experience throughout the day. Turn to page 28 to discover more.

As you can imagine, many of Cornwall’s hotels-with-spas are in amazing locations and the Mullion Cove Hotel & Spa (mullion-cove. co.uk) is no different. Boasting a brand-new facility for 2019, the stunning spa has been built with many local materials. Granite, copper, bronze and tin were all utilised in the construction and interior decorations, while local serpentine stones sourced from the Lizard are used in the treatments. In addition to the indoor facilities, which include a hydrotherapy infinity pool, steam room and sauna, you can also step outside and truly connect with the clifftop, either soaking in the outdoor hot tub, swimming in the outdoor pool (open all year and heated from March to October) or simply relaxing on one of the sumptuous loungers, gazing out across the ocean. Treatments here are designed to rejuvenate and relax and you can choose VOYA products containing seaweed from the Atlantic

or select the Made For Life range – organic skincare and massage oils that are made by hand in Cornwall. Ensuring that wellbeing is available to all, therapists here have trained with Made For Life in order to be able to offer treatments to those living with or recovering from cancer. These gentle treatments are created to ground, calm and relax, with a meditative effect, all the while treating the skin with chemical and paraben-free products. Pre and post-natal pregnancy treatments are also available, a wonderful way to celebrate new life and connect with your body.

At St Michaels Resort, Falmouth (stmichaelsresort.com), you’ll not only discover an amazing hydrothermal experience, relaxing treatments and a state-of-the-art health club – complete with gym, fitness studio and even a gig rowing studio; you’ll also find a range of Wellbeing Wonders and longer retreats, new for this year! Utilising the resort’s brand-new Wellness Rooms alongside its other incredible health and fitness facilities, the Wellbeing Wonders are designed to kickstart an active lifestyle, providing a combination of support, challenge and guidance from an expert. Each ‘Wonder’ begins with a lifestyle assessment, and there are three to choose from. ‘Stretch’ offers a one-to-one personal yoga session; ‘Shred’ is for those looking for a weightloss consultation, while ‘Gain’ focuses on an action-packed workout followed by a personal training session on the beach. For those looking for a longer retreat, three and five-night lifestyle programmes are available for selected dates throughout the year. They are run in small groups and include health assessments, coaching, breakfast and dinner, all tailored to each guest’s specific needs.

state agency in Cornwall, according to My Place in Cornwall, is much more than simply helping clients buy and sell property. It’s about embracing the local area, understanding it inside out and being passionate about not just the properties they sell, but the local communities, amenities and the lifestyle that the Duchy has to offer. Cornwall is blessed with a great selection of unique homes and My Place In Cornwall define a unique home as one which has characteristics that set it apart. It could be picture postcard view across the landscape, the period features of a village cottage, or stunning architecture that oozes the wow factor. "We recognise 'unique' as something that deserves to be presented at its very best by using stunning imagery, stylish videos and thought provoking drone views. Our database of buyers come to us because they know they're going to find something out of the ordinary, a property that they will be proud to call their home," says Managing Director, Richard Yeo. When you become a client of My Place In Cornwall, the process is all about achieving the desired outcome for you and your family. "We want you to feel reassured, comfortable with the process of selling and most of all, we want

CORNWALL LIVING

to minimise any stress that comes with selling your home," explains Richard. Importantly, Richard and the team know the local north Cornwall area extremely well. The agency was born in Wadebridge back in 2008 and many of the staff live in the local area. During the summer months, they love nothing more than family time spent on the stunning local beaches and it's this level of local knowledge and hands-on experience of the

area that can help you to find the right buyer for your property. Of course, style and substance is an important part of presenting your property at its very best, which is why My Place In Cornwall utilise the latest modern marketing tools to proliferate the reach of a property. “We’ve built an enviable database of prospective buyers over the last ten years, both locally, nationally, even internationally,” explains Candice Nicholson, My Place’s Sales and Business Development Manager. “This helps us promote your property to the widest possible reach, enabling a sales process that can help you achieve the right offer from the right buyer.” What’s more, this fantastic Cornish agency recently launched their brand new website, combining these ingredients to encompass all the crucial elements required to run a successful agency. Candice continues: “Modern marketing is about engaging with your audience and creating content that brings them back time and time again. We like to think that we help our audience to aspire to make the most of a unique lifestyle in a unique county.” While modern estate agency may have seen a shift towards a ‘hands-off’, DIY approach

with cheaper fees and, often, no commission, My Place in Cornwall chooses to stick to their core belief that unique property deserves the support of a professional and pro-active agency to achieve the very best results. As Candice puts it: “When you become a client of ours, you can rest assured that you’ll always receive a five star, award-winning service where all that matters to us is that we achieve the best result.” Richard, Candice and the team are fortunate to have an impressive database of past and current clients, each of whom use their service because they trust it to relieve their fears, concerns or stress levels when selling their property. Many are repeat customers too, who clearly have a lot of trust in My Place in Cornwall. “This is why our brand will never join the crowd in offering ‘cheap’ fees and a reduced level of service,” Richard finishes. “We believe there are a multitude of property owners who appreciate and are happy to invest in a premium service to achieve the right result for them.” If you are considering marketing your property, you can get started today by booking your free market appraisal with My Place In Cornwall, where you'll learn all about how Richard and the team can utilise the very best in modern marketing to help you achieve the results you deserve.

The key aspect of business for Bude Windows is doing a job and doing it well.

Bude Windows' award winning Ultrasky Roof

CORNWALL LIVING

S

ince humble beginnings in 1995, Bude Windows and Conservatories has earned a reputation as one of the most highly-recommended window companies in Cornwall and Devon. The company is going from strength to strength and has just won Ultra Frame’s ‘Installation of the Month’ competition, for its Ultrasky Roof, which included a professional photo shoot of the installation, a certificate for the show room and a £50 Marks & Spencer voucher for the homeowner. The high-end range of products available with Bude Windows has also increased significantly and, in order to showcase its extensive collection, a new showroom has been designed and built on the Bude Windows premises at Kings Hill. The addition of Daniel – son of company owners Alan and Lorraine Britton – to the Sales team, has also made a massive difference to the company; Daniel joined Bude Windows in 2007, trained as a builder and qualified window/conservatory installer, before becoming the company’s very knowledgeable Sales Advisor. One customer has said of their experience: “Daniel was a delight to deal with – thoughtful and professional. Never flustered despite a myriad of questions and changes of our minds – he produced really good

proposals. The eventual work was delivered by a super group of people who were professional, courteous and thoughtful – each and every one of them was good to have around. They were all great ambassadors for the company. I was impressed with how they took real pride in their work and with the state in which they left the site. Equally, the after service has also been of the highest order.” They continue: “We can be very demanding customers and I am delighted to say without any equivocation that I wholeheartedly recommend Bude Windows & Conservatories.” This is just one example of the team’s many five-star Google reviews, and it really does sum up the calibre of this exemplary Cornish company. So, with awards, five-star reviews and an impressive new collection of products, why wouldn’t you choose to transform your home with Bude Windows and Conservatories?

MOVING WITH THE TIMES We catch up with Cornish business Britannia Lanes and learn more about their growing portfolio of services.

F

or increasingly more people, holidaying in Cornwall just isn’t enough anymore, with many deciding to make the permanent move here. Cornwall offers both the ultimate lifestyle by the sea, as well as the perfect retirement, especially for those who are escaping the stresses of city life. One company that sees a lot of relocations is Cornish removals company, Britannia Lanes. Established over 40 years ago and having built a sterling reputation, this family run firm has helped countless happy families start their new lives in Cornwall over the years. Many clients from outside the county use Britannia Lanes as a company they know they can trust, and it’s fair to say that the string of five-star reviews this company has achieved really speak for themselves. It isn’t just those moving to Cornwall that can benefit from Britannia Lanes’ unrivalled service, though. With the recent re-launch of the company’s website, Britannia Lanes, which has always had a price guide for the UK, now offers a price guide for those moving to and from Europe, as well as an international

CORNWALL LIVING

price guide for people moving to Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada and South Africa. This makes such a daunting move just that little bit easier, especially knowing you can still rely on the Britannia team’s safe hands half way around the world! Businesses, too, are well served by Britannia Lanes. Not only can office moves be seamlessly made with as little disruption to their day-today runnings, this fantastic Cornish business now offers Confidential Shredding Bags, which can be purchased online. These bags allow individuals and businesses who have confidential information to get rid of to do so safely and securely. If you’re disposing of up to five bags, you can deliver them to Britannia Lanes, who will destroy them for you; more than five, and the team will come and collect. If you generate regular amounts of confidential waste, Britannia Lanes’ shredding collection service can also include a free shredding console, which is securely installed in your office and emptied regularly, to a schedule that suits you and your business. Back to removals and it’s fair to say

| LIFESTYLE

that Britannia Lanes offers a comprehensive removals and storage service. As Managing Director, Mark Lane, explains: “There’s no one size fits all here. Our approach is centred on listening to our clients’ needs and then accommodating them as best as possible. This often includes informing them on the alternative solutions that they may not have thought of – giving them options, to either save money or reduce the hassle for them.” But where the removals service gets really smart is in Mark and the team's video surveys. Using specially developed software, the client gives a tour of their house via their smartphone or tablet. Mark tells us: “We get a very clear understanding of their needs and concerns. Having some face-to-face interaction, albeit through technology, helps provide a personal touch – we’re not just an anonymous company!” Using the survey, Mark uses his experience to work out the number of boxes and overall

ë MAIN Whether you're relocating to Cornwall, or half way around the world, you can rely on the professionals at Britannia Lanes

volume required, creating a detailed itinerary. “It’s an extremely effective way of identifying any issues, such as items that will require extra special care, in advance of arrival. Video surveys make our estimates much more accurate, and also mean our crews are far better informed on what to expect, and the kind of packaging they’ll need.” So, if you’re thinking of making a move or have commercial needs that Britannia Lanes can help with, why not head to the new website and go from there? It may just be the smartest move you ever make!

QUALITY

ASSURED Whether you’re simply updating or completely refurbishing, there are some areas of the home that demand a higher level of quality.

DISCOVER MORE Check out this impressive review, from a recent and very happy Duke Stone client: “Well what a wonderful experience from start to finish! We love our kitchen surfaces – the quality is stunning and the price was amazing. Don’t hesitate to let these guys bring your dream to fruition.”

CORNWALL LIVING

here’s a certain satisfaction about achieving that dream room, be it your kitchen, bathroom or your garden. However, it can be hard to know where to start, particularly when it comes to sourcing and installing materials of the highest quality. This is where Duke Stone comes in. Duke Stone specialise in the shaping and fitting of the finest natural materials, providing a top-class service with attention to detail and excellent customer care. We ask them whether certain materials tend to fall in and out of vogue as the world of interior design inexorably evolves, and, to that end, which materials are proving popular at the moment. The team tells us: “We cater for everyone’s needs, whatever the trend. We are fortunate to hold the largest stock in the south west of granite, quartz and ceramics, to ensure that all our customers' choices are met. Quartz and ceramics are becoming increasingly popular however, we are still selling a high percentage of granite. Noticeably lighter granites are more popular at present, but the infamous Indian Black Pearl, Absolute Black and Steel Grey are still in vogue." When it comes to kitchens, Duke Stone explain their customers are drawn towards the ceramics for their heat resistant qualities. “The worktops do come at a higher price, but customers purchase for the sleek, modern look and choice of thickness, which can be taken down to 12mm – making this a real winner for them.”

If it’s your garden that you’re keen to make improvements on this spring and summer, Duke Stone recommend paying a visit to their workshops on the Lizard, where you’ll find a vast range of local Cornish granite, serpentine, quoins, lintels, tiles and paving to peruse. Okay, so, you’ve decided to update your home and you think Duke Stone could be the company to help you do it. What next? To get the ball rolling, Duke Stone are more than happy to carry out site visits to help you measure your prospective worktops and give any advice you may require. “Most customers visit our workshop, where they’re able to personally view full-size slabs of granite or quartz and ceramic slabs – a real must for making that final decision. Once you’ve approved our estimate, templating and fitting dates can be confirmed. After templating your worktop, we aim to return within five working days to complete the job.” It couldn’t be any simpler!

e t a m i t l u e Th KITCHEN DEAL

With January comes sale time, with retailers promising ‘massive’ discounts. When it comes to kitchens, however, it’s not always as straightforward as it seems.

W

hen most kitchen companies say they’re offering 50% off, often what they mean is 50% off their kitchen cabinets, and not their doors, handles, plinths, taps or worktops. With this in mind, the team at St Austell-based Kettle Co. Kitchens wanted to come up with an offer that meant their customers were genuinely getting the best deal possible – one that meant savings could be made on every element of their dream kitchen, not just a cabinet frame. It also meant the savings had to be genuine, honest and not taken off inflated pre-sale prices. Kettle Co. Kitchens are already synonymous with stunning designs and an ability to fit kitchens to customer requirements (not the other way around!), and that’s because Managing Director, Dale Williams, is not only from a family of time-served cabinet makers, but also has a degree in design. His designs are so good, they’ve actually featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs! When it comes to choice, customers are spoiled for it! At Kettle Co., a stunning selection of contemporary and traditional styles can be found, from timeless, Shaker designs through to high gloss, streamlined, handle-less options. There are also plenty of colour choices and beautiful worktops to choose from, for that extra special finishing touch. Unlike the national retailers, Kettle Co. are able to offer quick, efficient and reliable service. Because they’re local, every member

of the team is there, close at hand, to deal with any changes, additions or any unforeseen issues that crop up during installation. And there are few kitchen retailers that can say their Managing Director will attend a kitchen installation, should his advice be required. That’s invaluable peace of mind right there! So, how can Kettle Co. offer the best kitchen deal? Well, the team have always offered competitive pricing, but as this is January sale time, they’ve gone the extra mile to create a genuine offer for their customers. In a nutshell, they promise that they won’t be beaten on price. They’ll price match against any other UK retailer’s store or website price, including offer-code discounts. They’re also offering a range of additional discounts throughout the sale period, until the end of January, so you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better deal! So, if your New Year’s resolution is to update your tired and outdated kitchen, now’s the time to get in touch with Dale and the Kettle Co. team.

here are few better ways to make the most of a Cornish holiday than spending it under canvas or in a luxury caravan or glamping pod. Cornwall has a stunning array of camping and glamping sites to choose from whether you are looking to bring your own tent, motorhome or caravan or want to take advantage of the wonderful array of pre-pitched yurts, tipis or luxury chalets. Locations are second to none and offer everything from sites right on the coast to those set in wooded wonderlands. Camping is a great choice when it comes to holidaying with family or friends as everyone can enjoy their own individual living space while being able to socialise in open communal spaces – connecting with nature doesn’t get better than this! We begin with Bodrugn Barton, a gorgeous site situated between Gorran Haven and Mevagissey on the Roseland Heritage Coast. Set in two lush paddocks, the six Wigwam® cabins are surrounded by a grove of hazels and a pretty orchard. The glamping site is set on owners Sally and Tim’s working farm, which includes a flock of sheep and a small herd of Dexter cattle. The cabins nestle in this Cornish idyll as if they have always been there, with stunning ocean views and we love the fire pits around which you can gather at the end a day’s exploration. The site is car-free, so ideal for children who can roam the paddocks to their

heart’s content. And fear not, on rainy days guests are welcome to use the heated indoor pool and sauna. Turn to page 101 to find out more about staying at Bodrugan Barton. www.bodrugan.co.uk Staying on Cornwall’s south coast, a woodland holiday at Forest Holidays’ Deerpark offers a rural retreat, set deep in a woodland valley beside an ancient millpond. The cabins are set back into the trees, some literally perched over the millpond, with woodburners and hot tubs to warm the soul if the nights are chilly. For a truly special stay, the Deerpark’s magical Golden Oak Treehouse is like something from your favourite fairy tale childhood daydream, but with a whole new level of luxury. This wooded hideaway benefits from all of the same facilities and modcons as the cabins – the Treehouse is one of a kind so early booking is essential! The on-site Forest Hub has a grocery store and an eatery where you can eat in or have a freshly cooked meal delivered to your cabin. www.forestholidays.co.uk/deerpark

This unique glamping experience is just magical. With just four accommodation yurts set around a communal chill-out yurt this site feels really special. We know that for some a camping holiday is a case of ‘less is more’ and you’ll find this at Pentewan’s sister site, Heligan Caravan and Camping Park. Set amongst what was part of the original Heligan Estate, this site is 'Far from the crowds, closer to nature'. The pitches are naturally sheltered in beautiful woodland and the amenities are just right – enough to make your stay comfortable with a heated amenity block, launderette, campsite shop and play area, but not so many that you can’t enjoy a more traditional camping experience here. You’re only a few hundreds yards from The Lost Gardens of Heligan where you can lose yourself in hundreds of acres of estate and gardens. www.heligancampsite.com And finally, we take a look at a couple of hidden campsites in Cornwall that truly have the wow-factor when it comes to getting away from it all. You’ll find the first hidden gem on the Lizard peninsula, at Teneriffe Farm near Mullion, and describing it as picturesque doesn’t even come close. You’re just a tenminute walk from the South West Coast Path, and the camping fields have gorgeous sea views. Pitches are well-kept and well-spaced and you get a real feel of getting back to nature as soon as you arrive. For those who prefer a sturdier camping experience to a night under canvas, there are also four camping pods available to hire. You’ve not experienced camping until you’ve done it the 'Scilly’ way – all your kit has to be taken over with you either by boat or plane on the Scillonian or Skybus (www.islesofscillytravel.co.uk), which really focuses the mind when it comes to what’s essential. It’s then taken to St Martin’s by an off-island launch and everyone works together to unload the boat when it arrives at St Martin’s quay before the short trip to paradise. The 50 pitches are sheltered by pittosporum hedges, offering shade from the sun and shelter from the wind. You’ll find award-winning washroom facilities here, as well as a launderette, free Wi-Fi and free charging point. You can pre-order hot morning croissants and evening baked potatoes and there is a small honesty shop for most camping needs; gas, pegs, charcoal, barbeques, freshly picked vegetables, milk and free range eggs, Campsite Honey and home made Tangy Marmalade. The nearby Seven Stones Inn, which has recently benefited from the addition of a new function area (read more from page 38) welcomes campers for drinks, lunch and dinner. And just 33 steps from the campsite will take you to the nearest beach! www.stmartinscampsite.co.uk

AMAZING

spaces

Proving that great things come in small packages, we discover how Mid Cornwall Landscaping recently helped one family realise their dream garden.

A

few issues ago, we caught up with Chris Plant and the team at Mid Cornwall Landscaping, who offered us their top tips for capitalising on our outdoor spaces. With temperatures most definitely on the up, we thought we’d take a look at one of their most recent projects in Newquay – a fine example of how even the smallest space can be perfected for quality time spent with the family. Chris is a firm believer in ‘bringing the inside out’. “With increasingly busy lifestyles, we should consider the garden an outside room, a place to unwind and make the most of the outdoor lifestyle that many of us love about being in Cornwall.” The idea of the garden being another room has well and truly fed into the project at this semi detached home in Newquay; a firepit gives the option of cooking al fresco, and the clever installation of a pizza oven, complete with its own log store, keeps things cosy after the sun goes down. A splash of colour in the patio furniture really offsets the look and, as we found out last time we caught up with Chris,

a colourful piece of furniture set against the darker hues of wood or stone can really make a statement. To make the space stand out from other back gardens, Mid Cornwall Landscaping have used a winning combination of coastal Cornish plants and materials. Wild meets man-made, and the effect is dazzling. Chris tells us: “Making landscaping choices in harmony with nature can be incredibly rewarding, and certainly does not mean compromise!” Mid Cornwall Landscaping are there to help you with all your garden and landscaping needs, offering advice, design and even a full planting and construction service. If you’ve been scratching your head over how you can capitalise on your outside space – no matter how limited you are on room – why not give Chris and the team a call?

roviding a full range of architectural services on projects, from extensions and alterations to existing properties, to bespoke, new-build homes, Austin Architecture & Design was built on the knowledge that each and every project is as unique as the client. Centrally located in the Heartlands development in Redruth, the Austin Architecture team is emerging as one capable of delivering creative; cost-effecting and client led architectural services throughout the south west. So, what do we mean when we say a ‘full range’ of services? In short, it essentially means that the team can manage every stage of your project, from initial concept designs and feasibility studies, to submitting proposals and gaining planning permission, to ensuring everything is compliant with building regulations. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding, and reading through the list of recent projects undertaken by the experts at Austin Architecture, we were impressed to see a long list of successful appointments. These include a recent redesign of a residential plot near Perranporth, and another to obtain planning permission to convert a garage into a self-contained annexe on the Lizard. Planning permission for the latter was granted and the

works completed all in the same year, and the result: a modern, one-bedroom annexe complete with bathroom, lounge and small kitchen, with amazing views towards Housel Bay and the Lizard Lighthouse! But it isn’t just residential clients that Austin Architecture works with. Just this year, the team were appointed by Crofty Multi Academy Trust to carry out an application for planning permission, for a replacement rear canopy to accommodate a new outdoor classroom for Portreath Primary School. Planning permission was quickly approved and the works planned over the summer holidays – another job well done! We could go on to tell you all about the many extensions, conversions and new builds that this stellar Cornish firm has helped bring to life – if only we had more pages! Instead, we’ll simply say that whether your needs are residential or commercial, if you’re looking for a Cornish architectural firm with a successful track record that you can trust, why not put your faith in Austin Architecture & Design?

Take your pick from Cornwall's countless walking routes ê BELOW Cycle from beach to beach this summer

I

t’s that time of year again – the sun is out and Cornwall’s coastline and countryside have come to life with the bloom of spring and the promise of summer. What better time to get outside? This month, in order to help you make the most of this special time of year, we take a quick look at just some of the adventurous offerings available around the Duchy. So grab your diary, take a seat and prepare to start filling out your spring and summer itinerary. We’ll start off gently, for those of you looking to ease your way into an active summer lifestyle. It’s been a long winter and as they say, it’s important to stretch! To loosen up those still-stiff muscles, we recommend lacing up your boots and enjoying one of Cornwall’s innumerable walks. Whether your preference is coast or countryside, wetland or woodland, there’s plenty to be explored in our beloved county. Being based in Porthleven, we here at Cornwall Living are well poised to offer some top walking tips and, as we too need to shake off the winter chill, we’ll start with a couple of routes close to home. One of my personal favourites is the two-mile circular route around Godolphin Hill. Starting off in the reception/tea room of Godolphin estate, it isn’t long before you find yourself at the crown the hill, gazing in one direction towards St Michael’s Mount and in the other, to St Ives Bay. It’s like looking down at a map! Another wonderful route is the ‘Plantations and Parkland’

walk around Penrose estate, between Helston and Porthleven. Commanding a staggering acreage of parkland, much of which enjoys views of Loe Pool – Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake and a Site of Special Scientific Interest – this moderate walk of around 1.5 miles is a pleasure for those who like immersing themselves in nature. To find out more about these routes and to discover more of Cornwall’s best summer strolls, visit nationaltrust.org.uk/lists/walking-incornwall Now that you’re feeling limber, it’s time to mount up. Cornwall is a cyclist’s paradise, with countless coastal routes, winding country roads and off-road trails catering to cyclists of all abilities and disciplines. Perhaps you’re staying in north Cornwall with the family? If so, the Camel Trail, leading around the Camel Estuary from Wadebridge should certainly be in your to-do list. You can hire everything you’ll need for the trail from Bridge Bike Hire (bridgebikehire.co.uk). What’s more, the team offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the trail via the evening rides – a good chance to gain a different perspective of this beautiful hotspot of nature, with dramatic sunsets serving as a backdrop. Perhaps you’ve opted to stay well away from the crowds, but still want to make the most of Cornwall on two wheels? If so, the team at Go ByCycle (cornwallbikehire.co.uk) can deliver hire bikes to you, wherever you are in the Duchy. They can even deliver to you directly on arrival, so you can be mounted and away, as soon as you’re off the train! This year, the Go ByCycle has invested heavily in

some serious electric bikes. These are more than capable of making even the steepest Cornish hill a relaxing ride, perfect for anyone looking to explore the county at their own pace. There’s also a range of road, touring and family bikes, and the team have lots of suggestions if you’re looking for routes to suit your ability. Now that you’ve dusted off the cobwebs and allowed the weather to warm just that little bit more, you’re probably feeling like cooling off. How better to do so than a day spent on (or in) the water? There are a whole host of activities for kids and adults alike to get stuck into, with businesses dotted around the coastline to help you make the most of them. Lizard Adventure (lizardadventure.co.uk), for instance, allows you to have a go at stand up paddle boarding (SUP), coasteering, kayaking and climbing, also running survival skill sessions and offering equipment hire. They recently opened a new site in Hayle too, where you can have a guided trip or lesson on kayaks and stand up paddle boards, or hire one and head out on your own path. These include the ‘Mega-Sup’, which fits up to eight adults and is great for parties! Just down the coast in Porthleven you’ll find Vertical Blue Adventures (verticalblue.co.uk), offering SUP lessons and hire, guided kayak tours and exciting multi-day adventures, tailored to you. These can include kayaking, wild swimming, shelter building, fires and foraging, as well as moonlit paddle boarding and exploring the coastline on foot. Heading down the coast, sitting opposite St Michael’s Mount at Marazion, you’ll find The

Hoxton Special (thehoxtonspecial.com). With amazing views of the mount, this exciting venue is perfect for water sports and coffee lovers alike. Putting to use the abandoned lifeguarding hut, just along from the station house car park, visitors here can make the most of SUP rental, kitesurfing lessons and yoga classes, all with the best coffee on the beach waiting when you finish. On choppier days when the ocean doesn’t quite have the same appeal, you’ll be pleased to know that you can still make a splash. There are a number of freshwater venues around Cornwall, with an array of activities to help you and yours make holiday memories. Kernow Adventure Park (kernowadventurepark.com), for instance, is a reclaimed, flooded quarry offering activities that include assault courses, open water swimming, even wakeboarding! Find out more on page 20. Similarly, Retallack Resort (ariaresorts. co.uk/retallack-resort) near St Columb Major boasts aquatic fun in spades. Imagine a huge, ‘Total Wipeout’ style aqua park, water zorbs and SUP, not to mention the Flowrider – delivering perfect, easy-toride waves, whatever the weather. accommodation and a spa – if you’ve been looking for the perfect, all-in-one adventure holiday, Retallack Resort could well be the one. Another superb company that takes shelter from the breakers of the coast is Camel Ski School, operating on the beautiful Camel Estuary. As the name suggests, Camel Ski School (camelskischool.com), which is headed up by Charlie Toogood, gives kids and adults alike the chance to try their hand at waterskiing. But that’s certainly not all. On the calm waters of the estuary, if you’re really feeling like pushing the boat out, why not try wakeboarding or even wakesurfing? Charlie tells us: “Wakesurfing is an addictive and exhilarating combination of surfing and wakeboarding. Basically it’s like surfing an endless wave, and it’s a huge amount of fun!” Head further still up the north coast, towards Port Isaac and the neighbouring Port Gaverne, and you’ll find Cornish Rock Tors (cornishrocktors.com) and the team’s recently launched venture, Cornish Swim Tors. Between them, these sister ventures offer visitors guided group or private swims and open water training sessions, great for anybody wanting to swim in nature, whatever their goals. They also run coasteering sessions, SUP and sea kayaking, making Cornish Rock Tors one of the best all round on-the-water adventure companies on the north coast, one you should definitely look up! Finally, it wouldn’t be an adventure holiday in Cornwall if you didn’t at least have a go at surfing, especially seeing as the Duchy is home to some of the best surf breaks in the world. Enlist with St Ives Surf School (stivessurfschool.co.uk) and you’ll quickly catch the bug, learning from some of the country’s best, most innovative and progressive surfers! Right in the heart of St Ives on the stunning, Blue Flag Porthmeor beach, learning to surf with this school is a great way to maximize your trip to this must-visit seaside town, especially when you realise that the team offers SUP, coasteering and kayaking too! Alternatively, if you’re hoping to base your stay in and around Newquay, why not blend your surfing lessons with a luxurious stay at the Headland Hotel, situated above Fistral beach? Turn to page 64 to find out more. If you’re staying further up the coast near Bude, then Outdoor Adventure (outdooradventure.co.uk), as its name suggests, has all your adventure needs covered. This independent outdoor activity centre offers an incredible array of fun and exciting activities, immersing you in some of the region’s most spectacular locations. Do you want to try surfing? No problem. Coasteering, climbing or abseiling? You’ve got it. Outdoor Adventure really does live up to its name, with a whole host of other activities available such as Canadian canoeing, kayaking, coastal traversing, archery, walking and more. So there you have it. We have but scratched the surface of the Duchy’s outdoor adventure scene but as you can see, if you and yours are looking to make the most of the great outdoors this spring and summer, you’ll be hard-pushed to beat Cornwall as your destination of choice.

or those looking to update their interiors, it can be hard to know where to look, especially as there are so many companies, specialising in different aspects of interior design. Catching up with Mark, Managing Director of sister companies, Truro Lighting and Stylehome, we discover that between them, they very much offer a ‘one stop shop’ when it comes to getting your interior project off the ground. Take Truro Lighting, for instance. Mark tells us: “We have ranges that you can’t find anywhere else in Cornwall and we exclusively deal with the highest quality manufacturers.” So, you know you’re investing in a quality product from a reliable company, and can choose from some of the most exceptional designs on the market. Among others, brands available through Truro Lighting include those of Tom Raffield and, more recently, Original BTC Lighting. Established in 1990, this brand offers a diverse and unique range of designs, drawing inspiration from Britain’s post industrialisation and history as well as incorporating modern tastes and trends with the latest innovative designs. Another brand is Umage. Taking the story of Scandinavian design further than ever before, Umage combines aesthetics, simplicity and functionality, infusing it with thoughtful craftsmanship and environmental care. The resulting designs are exquisite with a sustainable edge, thanks to the well thoughtout flat-packed packaging, which helps optimise global logistics, reduce storage and

transportation costs, ultimately making the designs more accessible and affordable. But it’s not just lighting that Umage offers. It offers a beautiful range of furniture too, some of which can be found at Stylehome. Conceived early in 2006, Stylehome is dedicated to providing the highest level of service, offering a range of interior services that cover your home, upholstery, commercial projects, holiday home design and refurbishment and bespoke joinery! The team adopts a process that is quite straightforward – they simply take the time to fully understand your requirements, then assist you in surpassing them. Combining more than 30 years’ expertise in the industry, and using the beautiful ranges from incredible brands such as Tom Raffield, Umage and Original BTC Lighting, it’s fair to say that whatever the nature of your home improvement project, between them, Stylehome and Truro Lighting have you well and truly covered.

itchen Kit design, supply and install quality German kitchens, working closely with customers to create their dream kitchen. During each stage the Kitchen Kit team are on hand to provide expert advice and help guide you, with a 3D CAD design system available to help you visualise the finished product. The company has chosen two German kitchen brands, Ballerina and Nobilia, which are available for installation. Each brand has a key selling point but ultimately they have been chosen for their supreme quality. Ballerina’s philosophy for their kitchens works on three principles: individual, uncomplicated and for everyday use. They believe a kitchen should be a pleasure – and for a long time. Nobilia has over 70 years’ experience in manufacturing quality rigid kitchens and has become the largest kitchen manufacturer in the world. Kitchen Kit owner, Nigel tells us: “Nobilia’s goal is to provide every customer with exactly the kitchen they want, as unique as the people cooking in them. We aim to do the same.” The final stage of the process is the installation and Kitchen Kit pride themselves on the fact that they can provide kitchen installations by a dedicated team of fitters who are employed by the company, meaning that they are experts at installing German kitchens to a high standard.

The growth of Kitchen Kit over the past five years stands testament to the impeccable service that they provide. “We started slowly selling around 20-40 kitchens a year,” explains Nigel. “Last year we designed, supplied and installed just over 100 kitchens. We believe the main reason for our growth is our offering. Our aim is to make the purchase of your dream kitchen as enjoyable and efficient as possible. We love opening our customers’ eyes to the possibilities of their kitchen, to make the most of the space available and to create a welcoming atmosphere.” Kitchen Kit thrive on creating spaces that are sociable and user-friendly; each customer has a vision of how they’re going to use their kitchen and this is factored into the design process. So, if you’re after an impeccable kitchen installation service from design through to completion, then make sure to get in touch with the Kitchen Kit team and turn your dreams into reality.

IS YOUR GARDEN We catch up with Mid Cornwall Landscaping and get their take on gardening trends for 2019. è RIGHT Transform your garden into an outdoor space that you'll love to spend time in

A

s the evenings draw out and the first signs of spring appear, it’s time to remember that there’s a garden outside of those closed doors! Whether it’s established or a new project, the team at Mid Cornwall Landscaping Ltd share their top tips on this year’s gardening trends. Bring the inside out With our increasingly busy lifestyles, we should consider the garden an outside room – an extension of the house. This way, it becomes our sanctuary, a place to unwind and make the most of the outdoor lifestyle that many of us love about living in Cornwall. More than ever the garden is becoming our sitting room, kitchen and dining room and this year, outdoor seating, fire pits, hideaways and outdoor kitchens will continue to be a priority. Grow your own Many of us are increasing the amount of fresh fruit and veg that we eat, so why not grow your own? Not only can you ensure your food’s provenance, it’s incredibly satisfying eating what you’ve grown. Whether you’re just beginning or are an experienced ‘allotmenteer’, growing your own is only set to grow in popularity, whether it’s in pots, ornamental borders or dedicated vegetable gardens. Add some colour Although the palette of cool pastels and silvers remains popular, hot reds, yellows and oranges are making a comeback, with species like dahlias and chrysanthemums gaining popularity. Planted against a dark foliage backdrop or contrasting coloured wall or fence, they make a real statement. Alternatively, a colourful piece of furniture on a dark slate patio can look fabulous!

EXPERIENCE

GET EXOTIC In Cornwall’s sub-tropical climate, many exotic plants can survive and thrive, a trend that’s steadily on the rise. Why not consider introducing something exotic to your garden?

CORNWALL LIVING

Go natural Instead of trying to tame your natural environment, why not work with it instead? Even the smallest corner can be given over to promote bio-diversity; an area of grass can be left to grow longer or sown with wild flowers. Many of the popular perennials and grasses are ideal for providing habitat and food sources to attract birds and insects. Making landscaping choices in harmony with nature can be incredibly rewarding and certainly does not mean compromise!

Mid Cornwall Landscaping are there to help you with all your garden and landscaping needs for 2019, offering advice, design and even a full planting and construction service. Why not give the team a call and get your project off the ground?

GET SHREDDED Dispose of your personal or business data responsibly with Britannia Lanes.

W

ith the introduction of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in 2017, how data and paperwork is handled and disposed of is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Whether it’s your own documents at home, or how you dispose of your customers and client’s information as a business, it’s important you have total peace of mind that this is done securely. When it comes to home shredding, the number of documents that now need shredding for total personal security is at its highest level. The leading advice tells us that any envelope, letter or scrap of paper with a name, address or contact number needs to be disposed of securely, meaning our homes can often become cluttered with a ‘pile to shred.’ Most small household shredders simply cannot handle the amount of shredding produced by the average family home, which is why Britannia Lanes supply shredding sacks that are ideal for personal use. These can be collected from the Brittania Lanes office or delivered to you. The sacks are easy to use and you can fill them up as you go, making unsightly paperwork piles a thing of the past. The bags can be dropped back to your closest depot when you’re next passing, or if you have filled five bags or over they will be collected from you at no additional charge.

For total peace of mind you can then use the individual tag number with your postcode to track your bags’ progress online and receive a destruction certificate once they’ve been shredded. For businesses, disposing of any data you may produce such as printed emails, files and written notes containing customers’ and clients’ information in a safe and trustworthy manner has never been more important, with hefty fines for any company found not to be doing this. For business customers, as well as offering shredding sacks, there are also secure lockable consoles, which allow anyone in your office to securely deposit documents into the console without being able to regain access to them. Shredding services not only give you confidence that your documents are being destroyed securely, it also means you can rest assured that you’re doing your bit for the environment as the paperwork Britainia Lanes shred is 100% recycled.

e start at The Lost Gardens of Heligan near St Austell. First built during the 12th century, Heligan Manor has been the seat of the Tremayne family since 1569. From the late 18th and into the 19th century the gardens began their development. In 1851, Heligan’s earliest Rhododendrons were secured from British botanist and explorer, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, who collected them during his expedition in India from 1847 to 1851. Hooker’s story is a fascinating one too, making numerous voyages to far-flung regions that included the Antarctic, India, Palestine, Morocco and the Western United States. He was also the closest friend of Charles Darwin, and the 20-year Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (www.kew.org). In the early 1900s the gardens were at their zenith, however in just a few years, they found themselves lost beneath a veil of bramble and ivy after the estate’s workforce left to fight in the First World War. Many of them, sadly, would never return, however their signatures can still be found on the

wall in the Thunderbox Room, an evocative reminder of the catastrophe of war. The rest of the 1900s saw a demise in what had, for centuries, made Heligan great: the house, between 1916 and 1919, was used as a hospital for British Army Officers, then from 1929 to 1970 it was rented out, with the exception of the Second World War, when it was occupied by American Army Officers. Later converted into flats and sold in 1973/74, it wasn’t until 1990 that the derelict, once great gardens were rediscovered by Tim Smit and Tremayne descendant, John Willis. Since that moment, over the course of the last 29 years, the restoration at Heligan has been tremendous. Visiting now, there are more than 200 acres of garden paradise to discover, perfect for explorers, wildlife and plant lovers; following winding paths that were lain over two centuries ago. Heligan is a garden for all seasons, with so much to explore that we simply don’t have the pages to cover it, guaranteeing visitors a unique experience whatever the time of year. www.heligan.com

| COVER FEATURE Caerhays: the Chinese connection RIGHT è BELOW î Caerhays Castle and Estate

Until the turn of the 20th century Caerhays Estate had no real garden; the 19th century plant introductions from hunters such as Joseph Rock, Hooker, Abbe Delevay and the Lobb brothers, from China and South America, were largely absent. It was only after 1900 that Caerhays came into its own as a premier British garden, and the first plants of many new species – formerly unknown in Western Europe – can still be seen today more than a century on. The gardens here stem from the work of two great Chinese plant hunters: Ernest Henry Wilson and George Forrest, who risked their lives collecting plant seeds from this most far flung of nations. J.C. Williams, who owned Caerhays, bought his first 25 Chinese Rhododendrons from Exeter's Veitch Nursery in 1903, specimens which had been collected by E.H. Wilson. By 1906, more than 50 new species of Rhododendron were being planted and the creation of the garden as we see it today was well underway. Of course, new additions from across the globe were highly coveted and therefore the source of much excitement, but the risks taken by the plant collectors cannot be understated. In Szechwan and Yunnan, disputes were still being resolved with bows and arrows, and the Caerhays website highlights an incident that saw George Forrest narrowly escape a gruesome fate at the hands of indigenous tribesmen.

In 1911, George Forrest began work-proper for J.C. Williams and between 1912 and 1915, he embarked on his third Chinese exhibition, funded entirely by his employer – the equivalent of £400,000 today! As well as Rhododendrons, Forrest’s collections included an array of other plants, including Acer, Magnolia, Michelia and Manglietia, to name but a few; it wasn’t long before thousands of packets of seeds began to arrive at Caerhays, a steady stream that was largely uninterrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. The sheer volume of discoveries made by Wilson and Forrest, even today, is amazing to comprehend, and when you consider how many of their seeds failed to germinate, it’s possible that there are many more still waiting to be discovered. www.caerhays.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW? Open to the public for 100 days from mid-February to early June, the gardens are now closed until next year, so be sure to plan a trip into your 2020 itinerary!

Trebah Garden: Operation Neptune Trebah dates back to the Domesday Book of 1085, recorded as the property of the Bishop of Exeter. Over the centuries it has changed ownership a number of times, including wealthy Quaker family, the Foxes, who pioneered the garden, as well as world renowned racing driver, Donald Healey CBE, to name just a few. But it’s the integral role that the village of Mawnan Smith and Polgwidden Cove (Trebah beach) played in the staging of Operation Neptune – codename for Operation Overlord: the WWII Normandy landings – that’s really grabbed our attention. We pick up the story in 1943, when American troops had started to arrive in Mawnan Smith. Something big was about to happen and the locals, of course, were ready to play their part. In order to make the village and beach ‘army ready’, the approach to the village, once a single track, was bulldozed and its hedges pushed back, opening up the road. Roadblocks were set up and civilians, without the correct permit, were unable to pass. Services were installed too, like running water and electricity, something that would make a big difference to the villagers after the war. Then the troops began arriving in their droves: convoy after convoy of jeeps and carriers bringing American GIs to what, until then, had been a quiet corner of coastal Cornwall. By June 1944, the 29th Infantry Division had arrived, made up of thousands of recruits from various eastern states in the US, highly trained under the watchful eye of General Charles H. Gerhardt. As is only natural, the village pub – the Red Lion – became a popular haunt for the troops, lifting morale and coming to life with all kinds of new musical styles that the Americans brought over with them.

With dug outs created in the lower part of the garden and a sturdy concrete road constructed down to the beach (across a local farmer’s field), the beach itself was transformed into a naval operations base, providing upper deck access to the huge ships that would land here. No wonder, then, that it accrued the nickname ‘Yankee Beach’! Finally, on 31st May 1944, after years of intense training and months of guarding the Helford river, the 29th Infantry Division got their orders and began preparations to leave. Embarking towards the shore from their sealed camps (troops were not allowed to leave, minimising the risk of the D-Day preparations being uncovered), they made their way aboard the huge 100-metre long Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs). It all went off without a hitch; vehicles were reversed on in order to drive forward onto Omaha Beach and then, as the troops lined up at their designated sections, they received the order: “29…let’s go!” And go they did. The men of D-Day; the men of the 175th Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division of the US Army fought in what has been described as the ‘greatest show on Earth’, landing on and taking Omaha Beach – one of the deadliest of the five landings. By welcoming the American GIs, Trebah and Mawnan Smith provided the war effort with one of Operation Overlord’s most important staging points, doing their bit to ensure the success of the largest seaborne invasion the world has ever seen. www.trebahgarden.co.uk

Beautiful stays in Malpas, Lerryn, and St Ives

Fal River Cottage, Malpas After falling in love with the amazing river views, Lubi and Phil Dee decided to take the leap and purchase Fal River Cottage earlier this year. Since they acquired it, they’ve invested heavily in updating the property, including a brand new bathroom and kitchen, as well as the rear garden, which now boasts not one but two seating areas from which to soak up the spectacular Cornish surroundings. The dog-friendly cottage sleeps three over two comfortable bedrooms. Downstairs, when you’re not out making the most of those incredible views, you’ll find everything you need to make the most of the perfect self-catering stay, including a modern kitchen, BT TV with sports package (perfect for rainy weekends!) and a cosy wood-burning stove, which is just the ticket when you're snuggling up in the evening. Of course, all of us have days when we’d prefer not to cook, so you’ll be pleased to know that the popular Heron Inn is just three doors down. Dog friendly and serving a great selection of St Austell ales, this is a handy place to stop and stay awhile and given just how close it is, you needn’t worry about a designated driver!

It’s outside, however, that this property really comes into its own – the gorgeous, wood-fired Finnish hot tub a tempting prospect on those crisp, clear winter evenings. Roselyn Cottage welcomes up to two wellbehaved dogs, and the local area is a dog walker’s paradise, offering up walks aplenty alongside the river Lerryn and through the area’s abundant rolling countryside. The village is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque in south Cornwall too, its essence lying in ‘messing about on the river’. Sound good? If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that guests at Roselyn have access to two sit-on kayaks, complete with buoyancy aids, meaning you can make the most of the waterways that make Lerryn such an idyllic location for an escape.

A BEACH

With sweeping sand dunes, enticing rockpools, lifeguarded waves and miles of beach, owner of Forever Cornwall, Phil Gendall, explores Gwithian as one of the UK’s classic holiday destinations.

é MAIN The iconic Godrevy Lighthouse lies just offshore

I

f you’re unfamiliar with this spot, the beach at Gwithian is tucked away on the west side of St Ives Bay. Thanks to its westerly facing position, it basks in sunlight throughout the day. The beach is backed by towering dunes (or ‘the Towans’), and has endless golden sand and crystal-clear sea. Across the bay you can see St Ives perched on the horizon, and just offshore is the iconic Godrevy Lighthouse, the inspiration behind Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. We ask Phil to sum up what he loves about this beautiful pocket of Cornwall.

Space to breathe Gwithian is at one end of three miles of beach stretching all the way to Hayle, “so even in August,” Phil explains, “you can find plenty of space for you and your clan.” The dunes invite exploration and coastal paths stretch out towards the lighthouse and beyond. “This is a wildlife-rich area with numerous seals, and even dolphins and rare Cornish choughs – making it a great place to unwind and really feel as if you’re in another world.”

Something for everyone “As the beach is so vast,” Phil continues, “it offers something for everybody. It’s a great place to learn or improve your surfing skills, with schools offering lessons and gear rental. At low tide the beach has an array of rock and sand pools, which are perfect places to explore and paddle with the little ones.” What’s more, four-legged friends are welcome all year round on the south-westerly section of the beach. Forever Cornwall has a selection of chic chalets and stylish beach houses within a stone’s throw of the sea, handpicked for people who like nice things. If this sounds like you, book your 2020 Gwithian holiday now and give yourself something to look forward to!

THE VALUE OF INDEPENDENCE Do you have a holiday cottage or properties that an agency markets for you?

R

unning your own self-catering accommodation alongside daily life used to be more demanding than it is today, so it was easier to pay the agency fees and let someone else do the leg work. But, explains Jo Blaylock, property marketing and booking expert at ACT Independent, “times have changed.” “Owners of quality holiday properties can pay between £20,000 and £70,000 in agency commissions over a three-year period,” Jo continues. “Agencies typically take 20% plus VAT of the total booking value; then it’s the owner who pays for changeovers, service fees, property maintenance and bills. It’s significant money.” Since many local agencies are now owned by large corporates, Jo tells us, “your property gets contractually locked in and competes for bookings among thousands of others.” This is a missed opportunity, especially when you have an excellent property that can hold its own. According to ACT, owners’ main concerns about going it alone are getting enough bookings, and disruptions from guests when booking or during their stay. Firstly, Jo stresses, you really don’t have to pay an agency to market your property to get bookings. “Our experts will do everything you need to professionally set up your marketing. And we'll continue to provide support if you want us to. Most tasks involved can be automated by having a website carefully designed and written

for your property.” With ACT, your website would include an availability calendar, so guests can simply book and pay online, linking your availability to live listings on portals like Booking.com. Secondly, potential guests sometimes have a query about advertised rates, start days or length of stay. “An agency asks for your response to these anyway, so the only difference is you reply to your guests direct,” reveals Jo. When it comes to cleaning and property maintenance, “which owners are responsible for even when using an agency,” local service companies are hired to organise this. “Sharing your property calendar enables them to support you and your guests hassle-free.” At the end of the day, Jo believes you’ve got nothing to lose and little to be concerned about, especially given that you normally have a six-month agency contract termination clause – the perfect time period to become fully set up to run independently. Jo finishes: “If for some reason you change your mind, simply return to the agency or join another. They’ll definitely want your business.” For more sound advice on capitalising on your holiday cottage or to find out more about ACT Independent, be sure to give Jo and the team a call.

AN IDYLLIC

country retreat

With period cottages and acres of land you know you’ll have a relaxing stay at Tremaine Green Cottages.

A

s you walk through the arches and into the grounds of Tremaine Green Cottages, a sense of tranquility and peace envelops you. You’re greeted to the sight of period Cornish cottages in a traditional courtyard setting, made from mellow Cornish stone, granite and blue delabole slate once mined at a quarry nearby and shipped from the picturesque fishing harbour of Polperro. The peaceful surroundings at Tremaine are rich and green with well-established, award winning gardens– far enough from any main roads for kids to roam around and play without the worry of traffic. Not to mention the pigmy goats and miniature horses on-site that you can pet, feed and befriend, as well as the owners friendly Great Dane. There is also a tennis court if you’re up for a game or two. Well located to explore south Cornwall’s plethora of coves and small tranquil beaches, this stretch of coastline is protected by the National Trust and is fondly known as the 'smugglers coast' thanks to its legends of piracy and bootlegging. Tremaine Green’s closest cove, Lansallos, is just 2.5miles away and was described by BBC Coast as: “The quintessential Cornish smugglers cove,” who knows you might even stumble across some long lost treasure! Also nearby are the neighbouring towns of Fowey and Looe, with brilliant restaurants, bars and artisan shops to explore. Then, after a day exploring south Cornwall’s secret coves, tranquil waters and idyllic fishing villages return to your cosy cottage and watch the sun go down from the patio with a glass of something chilled, or, if it’s a cool evening – snuggle down in front of the comforting glow of a warm fire. Tremaine provides the opportunity for families big or small to gather together, with cottages ranging from one to three-bedroom and the potential to rent numerous cottages for larger families or family celebrations. Accommodating up to 45 people, all in beds, and with up to two dogs allowed per cottage, you’re sure to have a holiday to remember whether you’re just with your partner or a whole group of family and friends.

Glampers here frequently comment on the peace, the starry skies and the clean air. Many

wake up to make a mug of tea and stand on their Wigwam deck to watch the early boats make their way to sea for the day’s catch, and see them home safe again later in the day while sipping a chilled glass of wine. Boats and kayaks can be launched at Portmellon and fishing trips enjoyed from Mevagissey. Breathe in the salt air and marvel at the deliciousness of fresh fish cooked al fresco. Bodrugan has another string to its very special bow: an old stone combine house has been transformed into a beautiful underfloor heated studio space to accommodate yoga practice, writers and crafters. THE MAGIC OF We catch up with Mel Chambers at Alchemy Tiles and discover some of the secrets behind her expert tile inlay techniques.

é ì ABOVE Mel's tiles look great as splashbacks or as feature pieces in bathrooms

A

fter meeting Mel Chambers at Alchemy Tiles a few years back, we revisit this vast and ancient technique as it takes on a whole new role in her repertoire. Since moving to her new Studio in Mawnan Smith, the space has allowed Mel to develop the technique further and she has gone on to specialise in interior work with kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces – or just about anywhere that there’s a surface to decorate! With her skillset as a talented draughtswoman she has the ability to create bespoke and unique pieces for any space, shape or home. This includes everything from unique back splashes to exquisitely detailed fireplace surrounds. Mel works closely with each client to establish what kind of images and words resonate and have meaning for them, as well as ensuring it fits with the surrounding décor. The real magic, however, is in the carving, which is all done freehand. Rather than painting the tiles Mel uses the ancient inlay (or ‘encaustic’, as it’s technically known) technique, each piece is carved free hand into the wet clay before being filled in with coloured slip (running clay with oxides and stains added). Not to mention that all the colours are her own unique recipes, which she has developed over her career, continuously bringing new colour ranges out each year.

Once the inlaid clay has dried, the top layer is scraped back, revealing the design underneath. After a long drying process the tiles are then glazed with a clear crackle glaze and fired raw (only once) very slowly. When all the tiles are removed from the kiln, a stain is washed over the tile to highlight the unique crackle effect of the glaze. The whole process can take from four to eight weeks depending on the design and because the colour is actually fired earth, embedded into the tile, the colours will never fade or lose their vibrancy. Indeed, archaeologists are still uncovering ancient floors today that are thousands of years old and still as beautiful as the day they were laid. What makes these creations so special is that because of the way they are made, using raw organic materials, no design can ever be replicated – making each piece a bespoke unique creation, held eternally in earth and time.

ESCAPES Thinking of booking a self-catering escape to the West Country? Have a charming holiday cottage to let? Toad Hall Cottages are here to help.

é ABOVE ì INSET

Location is everything when choosing a holiday home

W

ith over 30 years’ experience and 900 cottages to choose from, the team at Toad Hall Cottages are dedicated to finding the perfect holiday cottage for you. With offices across the south west, and their new office in Wadebridge, the booking advisors listen carefully to your requirements and suggest cottages to make your West Country holiday a truly memorable one. Alternatively if you own a cottage which you are thinking of using as a holiday let, or are thinking of buying one, the team have offered us some top tips for making your cottage as appealing as possible.

1. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION If you’re buying a property, think carefully about the location. Coastal properties are appealing, especially for families, but equally some people like to get away from it all in remote properties or places with attractions or activities nearby. Toad Hall’s experienced property team are happy to offer free advice or visit a property with you under no obligation.

2. HOME FROM HOME, ONLY BETTER Try to make your property as attractive as possible inside and out. Imagine arriving after a long tiring journey and make your cottage look smart and welcoming. It’s worth investing in quality beds, pillows and linen and cushions. Throws, quality furnishings and pictures all add to the feel. The team are happy to offer advice on furnishing, decoration and room layout.

CORNWALL LIVING

3. THOSE LITTLE EXTRAS Think about the little things that would make your guests’ holidays more enjoyable. WiFi is pretty much obligatory these days and a hairdryer, luxury toiletries, Smart TV or streaming services are always appreciated. To make it more personal, a bottle of wine and welcome note on arrival make a huge difference. In the kitchen, make sure there is enough of everything for the number of guests and a few to spare too. Ask one of Toad Hall’s Property Managers for an owner inventory if you’re not sure.

4. FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS The UK is a dog-loving nation and the experts highly recommend that your property accepts dogs. They’re part of the family after all.

5. CHILDREN The biggest self-catering market is families, so if possible it makes sense to make your property family friendly. The Toad Hall team can advise on legal safety standards but in addition some children’s pictures, books, toys or bed linen are bound to be appreciated and, for older children, DVDs, games or beach equipment.

espite the consistent lengthening of Cornwall’s shoulder seasons, it’s still surprising how few people see it as a winter destination. For the life of me, I can’t understand why! Earth shattering storms make for an awe-inspiring sight on the coast, and the menus of Cornwall’s restaurants reflect the delicious produce that thrives at this time of year.

The skeletal trees whistling in the wind, the rain-soaked dunes leading down to the beach, the rugged cliffs, carved out by aeons of storms and savage winds – there’s so much to take in. “As they say,” he continues, “there’s no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes!” Among a wealth of other superb dog friendly homes, he shows us Roselyn at Lerryn. “When the nights get longer and temperatures drop, it’s time for Hygge – Cornwall style!” A stunning stay sleeping six and surrounded by beautiful walks, this property is just a stone’s throw from the local pub. Escape to Polurrian on the Lizard

Speaking of food... Cornwall has no doubt become one of the foodie capitals of the UK, so if you have no other reason to visit the Duchy, the food alone should be enough! At Merchants Manor in Falmouth (merchantsmanor.com), couples can ease into an adults-only escape and enjoy a proper bit of respite and Cornish hospitality. Owners Nick and Sioned have worked tirelessly to present guests with a heady mix of crackling log fires, boozy hot chocolates, great company and fine food, all complemented by an award winning spa. As Nick puts it, “Falmouth and Merchants Manor are the perfect winter companions,” and with the town’s bohemian mix of independent shops, bars and eateries, we couldn’t agree more. Headed up by Chef Patron, Hylton Espey, Merchants Manor’s Rastella restaurant boasts three AA rosettes, and Hylton’s motto that “what grows together goes together” has really helped cement the hotel’s position near, if not at, the top of the local foodie scene.

Further along the north coast, we catch up with the John Bray Cornish Holidays team (johnbraycornishholidays.co.uk). Specialising in Rock, Port Isaac, Polzeath and Daymer Bay, John Bray is renowned for its large portfolio of superb self-catering stays. Speaking with Debbie from the Lettings Team, we ask what she recommends to anybody travelling with their pooch. “My favourite walk with my dog is from Rock to Daymer Bay, or maybe to Polzeath and beyond. The beach is a huge stretch of sand, especially at low tide. Flanked by sand dunes, it’s dog friendly all year round.” John Bray has a wealth of properties in the area, including Farlands in Daymer Bay. Sleeping up to 12 and with a large playroom for the kids, Farlands is perfect for large group getaways and family get-togethers. Expect warm coastal interiors, sumptuous bedrooms and ample outside space for when the sun’s shining. Oh, and it’s dog friendly too! All of this sounds lovely, but for some, nothing quite compares to the deluxe convenience of a hotel stay. If this sounds like you, Polurrian on the Lizard (polurrianhotel. com) may just be perfect. Dog friendly and located right on the South West Coast Path, with endless miles of walks in either direction, as a guest, you also have access to the beach below – superb for inquisitive canines – as well as to the Health Club, where you can indulge in a soothing treatment before taking a dip in the indoor pool. Accommodation ranges from boutique hotel suites to the hotel’s holiday villas. Sleeping six across three bedrooms, the villas each feature a master suite, two further bedrooms, and everything you could need to make the most of a Cornish self-catering break. The best part is that villa guests still have access to all of the hotel’s facilities, including the health club, restaurant and bar, where the team have built a reputation for championing the best local and seasonal produce. Next we move to Porthleven, which has in recent years risen to the top of the table as one of Cornwall’s top foodie destinations. Here, Cornish Horizons (cornishhorizons.co.uk) have a superb portfolio of self-catering stays to offer, although we can’t imagine you’ll spend much time cooking for yourself! From Mott House and Ocean Blue, which both sleep six, to Pooh Corner (sleeping seven) and Song of the Sea (sleeping eight), there are plenty of options when it comes to maximising your Porthleven break. Discover more about Cornish Horizons on page 98. Moving south to north, our next stop is at the Padstow Harbour Hotel (harbourhotels. co.uk/padstow). Commanding a superb position overlooking Padstow’s harbour, we could delve into the details of the hotel’s brand-new look, its sumptuous rooms and knowledgeable team who are always on hand to help you make the most of your Padstow break. We could wax lyrical about the celebrity owned restaurants and independent eateries that have made Padstow the foodie capital of Cornwall. Instead, we’ll let Matthew Roach from the Harbour Hotels group sum it up: “Ridiculously cosy rooms, spectacular sea views, signature seafood, and a warm winter welcome. All just steps away from Padstow harbour.” What else do you need to know? Read more on page 72.

Winter warmers When we think ‘winter break in Cornwall’, our minds conjure up scenes of crackling log fires, steaming saunas and chilly evenings spent soaking in a hot tub as we gaze up at the stars, a flute of bubbles (and the bottle, of course) to hand. If this sounds like ‘a bit of you’, why not head to Newquay and discover Sands Resort Hotel (sandsresort.co.uk), offering spa breaks with a distinct Moroccan twist. The perfect place for a cosy winter break, you can make yourself at home in the spacious rooms, swim a few laps in the warm pool or relax in the onsite spa, before tucking into a mouth-watering dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. A top tip from the team is to try out the unique 90-minute Moroccan Spa Experience and watch the sun set, wrapped up in a blanket from the hotel’s Atlantic Terrace. Sounds blissful! Travelling up the north coast further still, we make our way to sister hotels, Bedruthan Hotel & Spa (bedruthan.com) and The Scarlet Hotel (scarlethotel.com). Catching up with the team, we learn that, for the first time, you can experience both of these fabulous escapes as part of one magical package. The first is ‘The Wanderlust Escape’, starting at just £465 for two. The break includes a stay at Bedruthan enjoying both the indoor and outdoor spa experience and a three-course dinner in The Herring restaurant, before soaking at the Scarlet with a clifftop hot tub with fizz, another candlelit dinner and time in the Scarlet Spa. Then there’s the ‘Taste of Scarlet’, which starts at just £265 for two. The break incorporates a delicious three-course dinner at the Scarlet, overlooking Mawgan Porth beach, before retiring to your sea view room at Bedruthan – the perfect one night escape. Discover more on page 71.

The shop has Rings from the reticulated range an inviting display of beautiful designs, from bangles and watches, to earrings and bespoke one-off pieces. Run by owners Clair and Paul, their story began when they moved to Cornwall and started selling their Harlequin range of jewellery at a market stall on Porthleven harbour. Eight years down the line and they own a shop on one side of the harbour and a jewellery workshop on the other. “I’ve always had a love for jewellery,” says Clair. “I created our Harlequin range and regularly make unique one-off pieces using sterling silver and semi-precious stones.” The Harlequin range is displayed alongside other collections created by local Cornish artists. For Paul, opening the shop and workshop was a natural progression. “After a few successful years at the Porthleven Harbour Market, I realised how much I enjoyed the creative side of jewellery. I went back to school and attended a threeyear course at Truro College, gaining a BA Honours degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design. I hope that the love and passion we have for our work shines through.” Paul and Clair’s love for their craft certainly does shine through, and if you too would like to discover the beauty of crafting jewellery, why not book on to a jewellery making course at the workshop for a truly unique gift this year? “We would like to extend a big thank you to all our customers,” says Paul. “We wish them a very merry Christmas and all the best for the year ahead.”

30 YEARS OF STYLE Debbie Wilson, owner of Mélange in Truro, tells us how she and her team have moved with the times over the last 30 years.

A

fter first walking through Truro's brand new Nalders Court development 30 years ago, Debbie Wilson knew it was time to engage her entrepreneurial spirit. A hairdresser by trade, Debbie's eye for colour and style helped her realise that there was a gap for an upmarket ladies clothing shop, for the 40-plus woman looking for quality clothing that was different to what the high street had to offer. “It wasn’t long before I had signed a 25-year lease and was on my way to opening Mélange!” Over the years Mélange has changed dramatically, with customers now item buying and mixing fashion pieces with classic staple favourites. “Lifestyles are different,” Debbie tells us. “Smart, comfortable, casual clothing is now what women want, which is why we now specialise in jeans and casual trousers. A perfect fit is essential!” Of course, Mélange has also witnessed the advent of online retail, which has had a huge impact on the high street. “Customers are easily drawn into thinking it’s cheaper and easier,” Debbie explains. “But it's not. Often when your purchase arrives it isn’t as good as it looked, or the quality and fit aren’t as expected. Here at Mélange we’ve always delivered great personal service, and as the shift is gradually drifting back to independent stores, we’re still here in Truro after 30 years, with a helpful team on hand to help choose the perfect clothes for you.” So how does Debbie decide which labels to stock? She explains: “I have stayed true to some of my collections over the years as they too have changed with the times, however I regularly look at new brands if I feel that I’m lacking a bit of excitement in the season.” Joseph Ribkoff is the latest addition: popular thanks to its fit and comfort, this fabulous label flatters customers sized 8 to 18, with larger sizes available to order if required. Perfect for travelling, the easy-care fabrics mean they can virtually be worn straight from your suitcase, giving you that instant feel good vibe via timeless designs and a supreme level of comfort.

Spending time with customers, helping them to select items to fit and flatter them and giving them the confidence to try something new – whether it’s for work, a holiday or special occasion – is what Debbie and her friendly team enjoy most. They understand that whilst we may all feel as if we need a reason to purchase that new dress or sweater, most of the time, we simply need our fashion taste buds tickled!

W

ith a rich seafaring history that spans well over a millennium, before they were tin miners and smugglers, the Cornish were fishermen. Cornwall sits at a maritime crossroads with Gulf Stream currents bringing warm water species, and cooler northern currents bringing cold water species. As a result, Cornwall’s fishing grounds are home to an astonishing diversity of fish, shellfish and crustaceans, a fact that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the many seafood restaurants who are lucky enough to be able to pick from the incredible selection of seafood that the Duchy’s rich waters have to offer. With numerous fishing villages, ports and harbours dotted around Cornwall’s coastline, some of the most popular fish restaurants are based in these areas. Take Nathan Outlaw’s two restaurants in Port Isaac for example: Restaurant Nathan Outlaw and Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen (nathan-outlaw.com). Both champion the use of Cornish fish and seafood and boast views of the surrounding coastline. Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen is housed within a traditional 15th century fisherman’s cottage, and provides a menu filled with unique dishes created from the freshest seafood landed from the surrounding waters each day. We hear from Head Chef, Tim Barnes, who tells us: “The sea and fishermen dictate our menu and we never compromise on quality or sustainability.” The majority of the fish served in Nathan Outlaw’s restaurants is from Cornwall, predominantly Port Isaac, Newlyn and Looe. You don’t need to go far to get the best crab and lobster in the world, making it a no-brainer to source locally.

Similarly, Rick Stein has restaurants located in some of Cornwall’s most acclaimed harbour towns (rickstein.com). The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, for example, is famous for establishing an international reputation for the freshest fish and shellfish, often landed on the doorstep. Chef Director, Jack Stein, tells us: "The local fishing industry is essential to everything we do, without them we wouldn't be here. The fishermen provide us with great quality seafood, we cook it simply – there's nothing better." Padstow based fisherman Johnny Murt has a close relationship with Stein’s and ventures out of the Camel Estuary and towards Trevose Head or Port Isaac for his catch. When it comes to fishing he has this to say: “When the weather’s good and your fishing is good, there isn’t a job in the world that can touch it.”

COVER FEATURE | Prawn on the Lawn is also based in Padstow and is both a fully licensed fishmonger and a restaurant (prawnonthelawn.com). Providing exceptional seafood sourced from around Cornwall, you can enjoy a sit down meal or take your fish away to prepare at home. As a measure of its fabulous fayre, Prawn on the Lawn was featured in the 2019 edition of the Michelin Guide and was listed in the Sunday Times’ Top 100 Restaurants for 2018. This restaurant and fishmonger provides the perfect spot to snap up something tasty for dinner, or sample dishes prepared by the talented kitchen team. The daily changing menu relies on what the fishermen have hauled in that morning and is made up of small plates as well as whole fish and shellfish straight from the counter. Owners Rick and Katie Toogood tell us: “We focus on being as seasonal and sustainable as possible, so nearly all of our seafood is sourced from Cornwall. We have our fishermen, Johnny Murt and his brother Martin who are 5th generation fishermen based in Padstow and who supply us with crab, lobster, mackerel and pollack. We also source day-boat fish from Newlyn and St Ives further down the coast. To ensure that we’re offering the freshest seafood, our menu at Prawn on the Lawn changes daily, as it’s very much dependent on what catch the fishermen bring in that day.”

Located across the Camel Estuary in Rock you’ll find The Mariners Public House, re-launched by Paul and Emma Ainsworth in May this year (paul-ainsworth.co.uk). The pub looks out over the Camel Estuary and offers an all-day menu using the exceptional local produce that Cornwall has to offer. Paul tells us: “In my opinion, Cornwall produces the best oysters in the world. The very best, however, are Porthilly oysters. Rock Shellfish is run by Tim Marshall and his son Luke and they’re based in Porthilly on the Camel Estuary. Tim and his family started out as dairy farmers, then 30 years ago diversified into shellfish. Their oysters lay on beds in the clean sandy waters of the Camel Estuary meaning there’s a good ratio between saltiness (from the sea) and freshwater (from the river). This produces a beautifully plump oyster with a creamy, fresh and almost buttery flavour. We are so lucky to have such a unique product on our doorstep and at The Mariners you can enjoy these world-class oysters while looking over exactly where they came from, just 500 yards away.”

These are some of Cornwall’s most well established seafood restaurants, headed by world-renowned chefs and sourcing seafood from local Cornish waters. Here at Cornwall Living, we like to keep an eye on the up and coming restaurants as well and two that have caught our attention over the last few months are The Mussel Shoal ( The Mussel Shoal) located here in Porthleven (where our headquarters are based) and Nik Boyle’s new restaurant in Falmouth (nikboyle.com).

Megan Searle

n The Mussel Shoal

n The Mussel Shoal

We all looked on as the wooden hut that houses The Mussel Shoal was constructed at the beginning of the summer season, and was subsequently filled with a brilliant selection of local drinks and an offering of fresh seafood. The location on the harbour head is simply stunning, as you can watch the tide slowly rise and fall and witness the mussels arrive, ready to be prepared by the friendly team of staff. Founded by local Kelvin Batt, The Mussel Shoal aims to provide exceptional seafood in a relaxed, rustic environment right on the water's edge. Catching up with Kelvin, he tells us: “Porthleven has some amazing fine dining eateries, what I wanted to do was introduce something a little different and a bit more laid back. We have a small kitchen so we encourage people to come and enjoy the view; our by-line is ‘fun not fine dining’ and that’s the kind of atmosphere we like to promote.” The team source all the fish locally using mussels from The Cornish Shellfish Company based in Gweek and the rest of the fish from St Ives. It’s safe to say that they’ve had an amazing season so far and are constantly looking at ways to continue to improve the customer experience. The location and nature of the business means it’s only open during the summer season, so make sure to head down and make the most of the beautiful views and delicious offering of seafood before it closes for the winter!

The harbour town of Falmouth lends itself entirely to enjoying a fish dish alongside a refreshing tipple. The buzzing town has a great selection of bars and restaurants, and recently opened Restaurant Nik Boyle has caught our eye thanks to its high-end offering of carefully crafted dishes. What stands out to us is the use of locally sourced produce throughout the menu, featuring Falmouth bay lobster and scallops, south coast hake fillet, Helford river oysters and Porthleven day boat turbot. It’s great to see a restaurant commit to supporting the local fishing industry and we love the fact that the provenance of the food is made explicitly clear; it makes it that much more enjoyable to know you’re eating seafood that’s been landed just a stone’s throw from the restaurant. Another business that stands out is Fish For Thought (fishforthought.co.uk). Marrying the expertise and personal service of a traditional fishmonger with the speed and convenience of online shopping and direct delivery, Fish For Thought provides unbeatably fresh Cornish seafood, delivered to your door. The company also provides healthy and convenient fish and sauce packages so that you can create a delicious meal with the freshest fish. “We want to inspire more people to cook and enjoy incredible seafood and a happy, healthy lifestyle,” says owner Paul Trudgian.

Supporting Cornwall's age-old fishing industry is hugely important, so that it can continue to thrive and prosper. This extends not only to restaurants sourcing their fish locally but to the care and support of fishermen generally, which is why The Fishermen’s Mission charity was founded to provide a lifeline of welfare and support to fishermen and their families (fishermensmission.org.uk). Recognised as one of the UK’s most dangerous occupations, it’s important that fishermen are supported to continue to provide fish to Cornwall’s restaurants and maintain the tradition of fishing in our coastal county. The support of the fishing industry extends to restaurants sourcing their fish locally and you, the customer, choosing to eat local fish. Head to a local fishmongers or order your fish from companies like Fish For Thought to do your bit to support Cornwall’s fishing industry. It’s worth it for the taste alone, as well as being crucial for the future of the industry!

GROUNDBREAKING COFFEE Introducing the Cornico Coffee Company’s speciality Zero Waste Coffee.

RIGHT ì Andrew and Martyn share a passion for great, sustainable coffee BELOW ê Supporting a sustainable future with biodegradable packaging

CORNWALL LIVING

C

ornico was originally founded by business friends Martyn Fraser and Andrew Tobin. Martyn tells us: “A huge amount of care and attention goes into everything we do, and we are really proud to introduce our speciality Zero Waste Coffee, which is hand roasted in our own custom-made coffee roaster here in Cornwall.” For Cornico, coffee quality is much more than just the flavour in the cup. It’s as much about environmental and social sustainability – something Martyn explains is “at the heart of everything we do.” Dedicated to reducing their negative impact on the planet and supporting the communities that take part in the coffee production process, Andrew explains: “Over 500,000 tons of waste coffee grounds are disposed of in UK landfill each year, where they speed up the decomposition of other organic waste, thereby releasing methane more rapidly. “These spent coffee grounds are an abundant, energy rich resource that should not end up in our landfills,” continues Andrew, “so we collect the waste coffee from our customers and send it off to be turned into fuel logs and soil improver, thus reducing our customers’ carbon footprint further.” But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Cornico is always thinking about the environment, which reflects in everything they do. The boxes the team take deliveries in, for instance,

are biodegradable, and the tape they use is made from cellulose. The coffee bags are oxo-biodegradable; even the labels are made from hemp and sugar cane, which means that 100 years from now, there will not be bags branded with Cornico’s logo in landfill. Cornico’s Head of Coffee, Tom Chambers continues: “Our coffee is small batch roasted, which ensures we can monitor and analyse every roast profile, making sure we unlock all the flavours of sweetness, acidity and body! “We source high-quality coffee that has been curated to make sure that it has exactly what we’re looking for. Green coffee before it is roasted is at its best when it is fresh – when all those delicious berry, chocolate, citrus or other tasting notes are most prevalent and punchy. For this reason, we buy coffee when it’s in season, so our customers can expect to see our offering frequently adapt and evolve with the time of year.” To put it simply, if there’s one message to take away from all of this it’s one that Tom sums up perfectly. As he puts it: “Great coffee doesn’t have to cost the Earth!”

Or stay and enjoy the views with one of the many daily homemade dishes, desserts or cakes they have to offer. Owners Jackie and Robin Haddy and the Farm Shop team are passionate about using the very best local produce to create a distinct menu of farmhouse cooking, and thanks to all this, the team is proud to have been rated ‘Silver 2018’ for its shop and café by Taste of the West. The Farm Shop has a well-stocked deli and varied food hall selling fresh local produce and, of course, their own homemade fayre. There’s also a selection of gifts and crafts from many local suppliers. The butchery also stocks various meats, including Red Ruby beef reared by Jackie and Robin at their own farm. They even make their own sausages and burgers! The Farm Shop team take a simple approach to cooking and that’s to make everything they can by hand. It’s food made honestly with produce from the fields or sourced locally and they hope that it will inspire you to make something magical of your own. With hundreds of products, the shop sells everything you need to make amazing meals at home. The shop is open from 9am until 5pm and the café from 9am until 4pm, seven days a week. é ABOVE Discover the many and varied exhibitions on display at this fabulous Cornish museum

I

f you're out and about exploring Cornwall and are looking for the perfect all-weather attraction to entertain everybody, in the market town of Helston, you’ll find the Museum of Cornish Life, offering a fascinating insight into the area’s rich tapestry of history and heritage. The building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837, with two separate buildings – one for butter and eggs, the other for the meat market. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of experience as you wander back in time to the Cornish days of yore. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost in the disaster, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. Head inside and you’ll immediately find that the museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers agriculture, local trades and industries, as well as law and order,

town history, home life, toys, sporting equipment, gardening, transport and health and leisure activities. Indeed, the sporting display features the famous Bob Fitzsimmons who, heralding from Helston, made boxing history as the sport’s first three-division world champion. The Victorian Classroom, meanwhile, provides a fascinating (and, indeed, eye opening!) insight for children, to see what life was like for pupils all those years ago. The museum boasts the best costume collections of the south west, also offering a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, meaning that there’s usually something new to be found every time you visit. With a team that firmly believes in learning as a life-long process, if you're hoping to brush up on your Cornish history, a trip to Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life comes highly recommended.

Your smile is worth a thousand words

CORNWALL LIVING

N

ow, we know it’s supposed to be a ‘picture’ that’s worth a thousand words, but when you think about it, your smile is similar in many ways. People take pleasure from a great piece art, and while they may interpret it in different ways, it generally stimulates positive emotions. Your smile, according to the team at River Practice, is your ‘shop window’ and there is over 50 years’ worth of research showing that people with attractive smiles are perceived as more friendly, trustworthy and confident, and so often find it easier to ‘get on’ in life. However, being confident in your smile can be easier said than done, so what can you do to improve yours? Modern dentistry means that there are more options than ever before – orthodontics, implants, veneers, to name but a few – and even within orthodontics alone, there are more options including Invisalign treatment, Incognito, 6 Month Smiles, the list goes on. The astounding fact, Jeremy Peak of River Practice tells us, is that many dentists have received no more than a day or two’s training in some of the more complex aspects of the field. Worse still, this training is often delivered by a company with a vested interest in promoting only its product. The dentist is only held accountable if it goes wrong and the patient is prepared to complain to the General Dental Council – the official body that regulates UK dentistry. So how to ensure that you only place your smile in the hands of someone that you can

trust? Jeremy offers some pointers: “Check the qualifications of the dentist you’re considering – the General Dental Council website (www.gdc-uk.org) allows you to check the qualifications and status of every dentist in the UK. Look out for those that are specialists (especially if seeking orthodontic treatment) or at least have a relevant master’s degree (MSc or MScD).” He also recommends asking about their experience and training and why they think that they can offer you treatment of the same standard and value as a specialist would. “If they have unbeatable expertise, they will only be too glad to tell you!” “Also, are they able to offer you a full range of treatments? Full braces as well as limited or hidden ones, for example.” “It’s always worth looking for reviews online, but be suspicious of very non-specific comments – some practices buy reviews from 3rd party sites!” If you’re still unsure, Jeremy finishes, “seek a second opinion from a specialist practice such as us here at The River Practice. You can seek a second opinion directly, or through your dentist.”

espite challenging economic times Cornwall Hospice Care leaders have committed to opening more beds at both hospices. Four more have already opened meaning there are now nine at the charity’s Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and nine at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle, with more planned to open later this year. The Director of Clinical Services, Gina Starnes, tells us: “In my 30 year nursing career I’ve seen first hand the difference that hospices make, giving patients and their families the peace, dignity and specialised care they need. As the only adult hospice charity in Cornwall we know there are many more families who would benefit from our care so we’ve been investing in our staff and facilities so we can open more beds.” However, such plans come at a cost and at a time when the Cornish charity has felt the challenges of the current economic climate. David Renwick, the Chair of Cornwall Hospice Care, explains: “We can only open more beds with the support of the public. I’m appealing to everyone in Cornwall to help us so we can support more people with terminal illnesses.” The charity has launched an appeal to help fund the increased nursing costs to support the extra beds as Oli Hoare, Head of Fundraising, explains: “As a 24/7 charity our

nurses are key to the care we deliver. To help us continue their vital work we’re asking people for £20 to fund an hour of that care and we hope they will help us achieve our desire to have 20 beds open by the end of the year.” As the charity prepares to mark the 40th anniversary in 2020 of providing adult hospice care to the people of Cornwall, it recently launched its latest Impact Report, detailing what the charity has achieved in the last year and what its plans are for the financial year ahead. Chief Executive, Paul Brinsley tells us: “We’re always appreciative of the support people give us, but now we need an extra boost to meet the demands. I welcome the news from the government about more funding being available for hospices. We’re working hard to ensure that Cornwall benefits from this so we can hopefully increase the NHS contribution towards our care from our current 19.1%, closer to the 32% average for England.”

urrounded as we are, on almost all sides, by the sea it’s not surprising that sailing is an inherent part of life in Cornwall – especially on the south coast with the port of Falmouth at its epicentre. Sailing, and in fact boats in all their forms, have always played a big part in my own life. Many a happy childhood day was spent with friends messing about in our little rowing boats off the beach at Cadgwith or joining my dad on one his many fishing trips, bringing home a haul of pollack for our tea. If we were really lucky, we would be able to grab a ride out on one of the bigger crabbers, and watch the pots come in filled with juicy crabs and lobsters. Those formative days on the water gave us a taste for adventure and independence, but also a healthy respect for the sea. When we progressed from rowing boats to sail boats, there was no such thing as ‘proper’ sailing tuition. In those days, we adopted a very ‘Heath Robinson’ approach to our first taste of sail, pretty much teaching ourselves by trial, error and a lot of capsizing! As my own children reach the same age, they are now afforded the most fantastic opportunity to learn to sail, being taught the essential techniques by experienced instructors…and all for no cost.

n Helford River Children's Sailing Trust

n Helford River Children's Sailing Trust

The Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust (hrcst.org.uk), an RYA training centre and a member of RYA OnBoard, was set up in 2005. With an experienced team of adult volunteers, Senior Instructor, Martin Fenton and his team provided lessons for more than 850 local children last year aged between 8 and 14. These children came from local primary schools, special schools, children excluded from education and, for the first time, a group of home educated children. The trust’s ethos is that there should be no financial barrier to any of their activities and by giving children and young adults in Cornwall access to sailing and other water activities, they can develop confidence, competence and resilience. We head to the Helford every Wednesday evening where Martin is a familiar, smiling face at each of the sailing sessions: “Our aim is to grow not only the sailor but the person. We tailor our sessions to the individual

p CORNWALL LIVING

COVER FEATURE | sailor, matching a small group of children to a particular instructor who will get to know each school child and young adult’s needs.” I have experienced this first-hand, watching my son go from being a complete novice, not knowing a stern from a bow, a tiller from a mainsheet, to excitedly volunteering to helm a Pico during a brisk easterly out on the Helford and taking part in the fantastic annual school’s regatta. It’s not always plain sailing though as Mike Comyn, Chief Instructor, explains: “The environment we work in can be challenging in itself. We go out in all types of weather and sea states, varying the lesson to the conditions and finding a sheltered cove to operate from. By listening to instruction, within the safety net we create, a child is able to overcome basic fears. By doing so, he or she is given a belief in instruction. This belief and trust can then be transferred to the classroom, home and future work environment.” “The Helford River is for all. If you are from a poor background in Cornwall you are very unlikely ever to experience the beauty of this wonderful place. We who work the estuary everyday, have no doubt about its impact on our lives and we love to share. We meet children who live less than 10 miles from the coast and yet have never been to the beach! They have no concept of its beauty or how to interact with the sea safely. Our job is to remove these barriers.” To help remove these barriers further the trust was delighted to announce earlier this year that it had been awarded a grant in excess of £1.6m that meant they could start work on an inland water sports centre at

Trevassack Lake. This disused quarry will enable year-round watersports for all as well incorporating adapted holiday lodge accommodation for children with severe disabilities. There will even be a floating classroom allowing young people of all abilities to get out on the water and view marine life through underwater cameras and onboard screens. You don’t have to be resident in Cornwall to take advantage of this amazing opportunity as the trust also offers holiday sailing courses for visiting children. It is grass-roots opportunities such as this that are helping to grow our budding sailors here in Cornwall. From here, children have gone on to captain super yachts in the Med, race in some of the world’s most prestigious yachting events or become sailing instructors themselves. It’s clear that discovering a love of the water at an early age in Cornwall opens many doors, and for some young people it has been the driving force to study marine related subjects at Falmouth Marine School (falmouthmarineschool.ac.uk).

With a school on the site dating back as far as 1825, tutors now combine industry experience with academic expertise to offer courses that include boatbuilding, marine engineering and science and alumni regularly secure prestigious jobs within the industry, both across the UK and beyond. Falmouth local, Ben Davis, secured the position of Wing Manager for Ben Ainslie’s America Cup team, thanks to his expertise in boat technology gained at Falmouth Marine School, while Tom Jackman, who is now working as a Chief Engineer on super yachts, is enjoying the career he always dreamed of while travelling the world. The marine science course has helped students progress to some of the most prestigious marine-based academic institutions, but also includes a range of non-academic practical skills that are often considered to be essential for progression. These range from diving, snorkeling and powerboat handling through to aquatic husbandry, photography and marine mammal observation. Former student, Clare Marshall, completed an FdSC in Marine Science at Falmouth Marine School and is now a Plankton Analyst for the Marine Biological Association: “Falmouth is the perfect location to study marine biology. With the River Fal and several beaches a stone’s throw away, it makes for the perfect outdoor classroom.”

So, what does all this mean for getting out on the water in Cornwall? For me, it’s essential that the next generation of budding sailors, water sports enthusiasts and marine students are inspired at a young age so that they can continue Cornwall’s sailing heritage and keep Falmouth and its world-renowned sailing waters firmly pinned on the chart. Without this infrastructure we wouldn’t retain the top-class boat builders, marine companies, marinas and yacht clubs that we see today. If you’ve not had the opportunity to learn to sail at a young age then are many other ways you can become involved. The Cornish Maritime Trust (cornishmaritimetrust. org) is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of Cornwall’s maritime heritage, operating three historic working boats – Barnabas, Soft Wing and Ellen – and training people in the associated skills of sailing, restoration and maintenance. Nonmembers are welcome to sail as a guest but the best way to experience these incredible boats and support the trust is to become a member. Whether you are an individual or an organisation, you can immerse yourself in days gone by in these historic 19th century sailing vessels. For a modern introduction to sail, or if you’re a novice seeking tuition, then Cornish Cruising, (cornishcruising.com) based at

n Constance

Falmouth’s Yacht Marina, offers a complete charter, cruising and training centre, with RYA courses available in sail, powerboat and motorboat. You can spend even more time aboard by booking a yacht charter holiday that will see you discovering Falmouth’s world-class sailing waters as well as the unspoilt creeks of the Helford. However, if hoisting a mainsail fills you with fear and an easy life is calling, then Gweek Classic Boatyard’s (gweekquay.co.uk) 50ft Victorian launch, Constance, affords 19th century luxury on the water. You can cruise the Helford in style while sipping on a glass of bubbles or taking afternoon tea, watching the water, bird and marine life pass by. Cornwall affords everyone the ability to get out on the water and celebrating sail is something we do very well here – if you’re a Cornish sailor or a visiting yachtsman then Cornwall’s annual sailing regattas and events are sure to be already in your diary. Cornwall Hospice Care announces plans for a further increase in the number of beds open at its two Cornish hospices. é ABOVE Cornwall Hospice Care Chair, David Renwick ì MIDDLE

The need for Cornwall Hospice Care's specialist services continues to grow

CORNWALL LIVING

s Cornwall Hospice Care prepares to mark 40 years of providing specialist care to terminally ill adults in Cornwall, up to ten beds will soon be open at both Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell, and at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle. It follows a determined period of investment for the charity’s Board of Trustees, who have concentrated on the recruitment of more nursing staff. “Recruitment of staff has been a constant challenge right across the healthcare sector in recent times,” says the charity’s Chair, David Renwick, “but here at Cornwall Hospice Care we have addressed this by investing in our existing team and recruiting more, equally well-qualified people to help us expand our services for those living with terminal illnesses in the county. I won’t pretend this isn’t a huge challenge, but we’ve been providing a service free of charge for 40 years now and we want to make sure we are here for the next 40 years, at least.” Cornwall Hospice Care’s Chief Executive, Paul Brinsley, elaborates. “As we head into our 40th anniversary year, it’s an accolade to the determination of our staff, volunteers and supporters that we are able to share news of more beds opening. In the last three months we’ve developed substantially; first we announced nine

beds at each hospice, and now we can confirm we intend to open ten at each unit! “The needs of our patients are always changing and the requirement for our specialist services is growing,” Paul continues. “We have a commitment to support people in the place of their choice and so we must ensure there are beds available at our hospices and support services that are easily accessible in local communities.” Paul explains that the charity’s values reflect the work the teams do to provide care, including collaborations with a range of healthcare providers and other charities, including Cruse Bereavement Care, to meet the challenges. “We now need to work together with our supporters to ensure than in our 40th year, we celebrate these developments and build on them so terminally ill patients can continue to rely on our services,” finishes David. “Watch out for a full calendar of events during spring 2020, and thank you in advance for your support. Together, we can make a very special difference.”
