to Dogs Love Cornwall Living...

While it may only be early March as we go to print, we’ve been favoured with an unseasonably warm February, making it quite apparent that spring is well and truly here. Hooray! At this time of year, there’s no better way to explore the sunny reaches of Cornwall than with your canine companion at your side and it’s fair to say that, for both humans and dogs alike, the Duchy is paradise! You’re never far from a dog-friendly beach, as we discover on page 20. If you don’t want sandy feet (or paws), worry not, as there are plenty of other places in Cornwall that welcome humans and hounds alike. Over the coming pages you’re sure be inspired by our great selection of places to stay, along with some tasty treats at the many restaurants and cafés across the county that welcome dogs and their owners! I look forward to seeing you out walking soon,

Dog walkers are welcome at

Porthleven’s Harbour View Café With scintillating views over Porthleven’s iconic and typically Cornish harbour, Harbour View Café is perfect for anyone looking to refresh themselves on a day spent exploring the south coast. Indeed, the all-day breakfasts are proving very popular with locals and visitors alike! Managers Penny and Kizzy are already building a fantastic rapport with guests, especially those looking to take a load off while the dog curls up beneath the table. Indeed, the café’s Facebook page is already awash with rave reviews, with many

homemade cakes and cream teas!

The museum is free to visit and family friendly – including four legged members, and there is even a children’s play area, gift shop and a delightful little pop up café. It contains one of the largest Cornish social history collections and ranges from a five-ton cider press to a 1950s kitchen. Pay a visit and learn about Helston’s famous inventor Henry Trengrouse, whose rocket lifesaving apparatus saved thousands of lives at sea, and imagine what it was like in a Victorian classroom. The greatest compliment the Teacup Tearoom often receives is ‘you aren’t just dog friendly, you are really dog friendly!’, and it’s true! When David and Lis decided to open the tearoom last year, they wanted a place where customers could come with their dogs, a place where furry friends would be welcomed, not just tolerated. “We provide each of our canine customers with a water bowl and a treat on arrival, plus a comfy bed with a blanket if they desire, which are especially popular on rainy days.” In fact, they even have freshly laundered towels for dogs to dry off!

The dog-friendly theme continues with any gratuities left, which are collected in aid of the St Francis Home for the Animals, and also, from this year, Streetvet Cornwall, a charity that helps care for the pets of Cornwall’s homeless. Fraser’s proud of Good Catch Gong! Fraser’s Fish & Chips on the Prom in Penzance has been voted the ‘UK’s Most Sustainable Restaurant 2019’ at the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars! Being handed the award at a stylish London hotel by Phil Vickery was a big moment of real recognition for the Fraser’s team. The chippy, from opening its doors in 2016, has always held responsible sourcing at the very heart of what it does, and the team believes you can taste the difference. Ingredients are carefully sourced using the Marine Stewardship Council guidance for the chip shop restaurant and takeaway staples of Cod, Haddock and Plaice, and the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide for the local catches from Newlyn Harbour.

Owner Pete Fraser tells us: “Playing our part in securing the future of the industry is so important. From green energy tariffs through to removing single use plastic where we can, the smallest of gestures and changes can make a big difference.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves! Spring is well and truly here and that means getting outdoors as much as possible to watch the flowers bloom and soak up the gentle spring sun. We recommend a leisurely stroll alongside Mylor creek with your furry friend, spotting the wildlife and watching boats bob on the water, or if the tide’s out, look out for the different bird species such as herons which frequent the area. Then top it off with a pint in the Lemon Arms pub, which has a brilliant beer garden and is renowned for being dog friendly. Welcoming your furry friends with open arms, they can expect treats and cuddles. One customer has said of their experience: “It’s wonderful to see how dogs are welcomed into the pub.” Not to mention The Lemon Arms also provides classic pub food made so well it’s practically gourmet so you can treat yourself after treating your pup, enjoy a prawn cocktail or a mature Cornish cheddar and homemade chutney sandwich in the warm April sun with your canine companion in tow. Introducing Creekside Cottages’ dog-friendly holiday homes Creekside Cottages offers a fine collection of individual waterside and rural self-catering holiday cottages on the south coast of Cornwall and 23 of these cottages are dog friendly! We hear from owner Martin Watson who tells us: “We’re a closely run and supervised company, it’s not a large agency, we’re a family business which has been running since 1956 meaning you get a personal service tailored to you.” Whether you’re looking for a romantic couple’s cottage, a traditional waterside fisherman’s holiday, or luxury self-catering holiday houses sleeping from two up to eight, Creekside Cottages has something to suit you and your four-legged friend. Two cottages that we’ve picked out are The Wheel House and Beach Cottage; both are situated overlooking Restronguet Creek and the Roseland peninsula and are in easy reach of beautiful beaches and the buzzing beachside town of Falmouth. Take a stroll and explore the estate gardens at Trevince The estate gardens at Trevince were designed and planted more than 200 years ago in the wealthy mining heart of Cornwall, Gwennap. The gardens include a walled garden of probable 18th century origin and parkland of similar date. In the 19th century, rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias were planted, with sub-tropical plants around the lawns and drives vaunting the mild climate. Avenues of Irish yews were subsequently planted and specimen trees complement the native broad leaves. There are also greenhouses, beyond which you’ll find the wilderness walk and woodland planted on the industrial waste of tin and copper workings. A haven for plant lovers and curious souls, you and your four legged friends are invited to stroll around the Woodland Walk. Bursting with camellias

We all love spending time with our dogs, those amazing walks surrounded by idyllic countryside or those fabulous sea views, like Crantock Beach below. Our National Parks are entrusted with 8972 square miles of amazing countryside making it impossible & ugly to have dog bins everywhere; yet leaving bags of poop is deadly to livestock & bad for the environment! The Dicky Bag is a convenient way to do the right thing, that’s why the National Parks have partnered with us. It’s a lightweight, odourproof, machine washable bin, made of Neoprene rubber. Easily attached to any dog lead, or “human” with the Karabiner, Velcro Strap or the Belt Loop.

RNLI

t may seem unlikely that your dog could get into trouble on the coast – they always seem so surefooted and they’ve never had an issue with swimming – yet it can happen surprisingly easily. Take springer spaniel, Lola, for example. In September last year, RNLI lifeguards patrolling the beaches in north Cornwall found Lola trapped at the bottom of a 40 foot cliff, with an incoming tide. Alerted by a member of the public about a dog who had run off the cliff, they immediately radioed their colleagues and requested the launch of the IRB

We hear some recent stories of doggie rescues on the coast and get some tips on how you and your hound can stay safe by the sea.

(Inshore Rescue Boat). With lifeguards co-ordinating from atop the cliffs as the boat made its approach, the RNLI was able to reunite Lola safely with her owner, with just a few scratches and bruises. A lucky escape indeed! Another such tale involved Barney, who was found trapped by the tide at No Fear beach in Whitsand Bay last June. This was the second visit to the small beach for the RNLI lifeguards in as many days, after rescuing a group of walkers who’d become cut off by the tide the day before. Due to the rough water, the only way to reach Barney was by boat, so RNLI lifeguards, Joe Saunders and Charlie Gillet, immediately launched the IRB. Unsurprisingly it took little persuasion to get Barney into the boat, before being safely returned to his owners. Charlie explains: “He was clearly very excited to see us when we picked him up, and was very well behaved on the journey home. But this was a lucky escape for Barney as the tide was coming in very quickly.” This highlights the importance of checking the tide times, and ensuring your dogs don’t get so caught up chasing seagulls that they find themselves stranded!

nLola, reunited with her owner

Even more recent was the rescue of Gilmore in early February this year. Having received a report of a dog slipping down the rocks between Man’s Head and Clodgy Point from some deeply concerned owners, the Falmouth coastguard radioed it in and the RNLI launched the IRB. At the helm of the four-strong crew was Barney Stevens, who says: “The conditions were okay, but there was a three foot swell and waves between four and five foot. Once we arrived we were pleased to see that Gilmore the springer spaniel had managed to make his way onto the small portion of beach. His owners had done the right thing by alerting the right authorities to ensure we could respond safely.” After securing Gilmore and encouraging him into the boat, he was quickly returned to St Ives Lifeboat station, where he was reunited with his delighted owners and taken quickly to the vets for a fullcheckover. We’re pleased to say that he is now home and well! In 2017, 91 dog-walking incidents called for RNLI lifeboat launches across the UK, while 97 required attendance by lifeguards in the same year. It’s important to remember that the coast can be a

dangerous place for anyone, and that includes dogs, so to help you avoid getting into any danger whilst out walking your dog, the RNLI offers a few simple tips. When you’re close to cliff edges, it’s important to keep both you and your dog safe, so be sure to keep your furry friend on the lead. When you’re by the water and your dog decides to go for a swim, if they should get stuck in mud, don’t wade in after them. Instead, move to a place your dog can get to safely and call them – they’ll probably get out by themselves. If they can’t, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

fter a three-year search for a shop on Padstow’s North Quay, in April 2017 Lisa Hope was finally able to open Slickers Doghouse. The shop is in the perfect location – overlooking the harbour in the heart of Padstow, and offering dog owners an array of useful high-quality products with great value for money. On the Slickers ethos, Lisa explains: “As nature lovers, we are on a mission to provide eco-friendly, sustainable products for our planet and oceans, as well as our dogs. Our toys and bowls are all made from eco-friendly materials such as rice husk, hemp and recycled bamboo chopsticks. Our bags are all paper and, where plastic is almost impossible to avoid – poop bags for instance – we only stock biodegradable and compostable versions.” In store you’ll also find harnesses, lifejackets, coats and drying coats, which come with a free fitting service provided by a fully trained, animal-loving team. But it’s not just apparel and accessories. Lisa tells us: “Health is a key factor for us at Slickers. We stock wet, dry and raw food, all of which is totally grain and meat meal free, providing the best possible nutrition for our furry friends.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Lisa and the team stock a range of natural, holistic and, where possible, organic treatments and medicines such as B-Balm for sore paws and noses, as well as colloidal silver-based drops and sprays for natural, more dog-friendly ways to kill bacterial infections. “We have dog remedies ranging from chemical-free flea and tick treatments, to chemical-free sickness and diarrhoea treatments that not only work fast, but balance the dog’s pre and pro-biotics too!” So, if there’s anything your furry friend needs, you can rest assured that when you step into Slickers Doghouse, everything you see is stocked with both quality and the welfare of your dog in mind. “Most importantly of all,” Lisa finishes, “we love dogs, so come and see us for a cuddle. We have treats!” FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL 07971 005071 OR VISIT WWW.SLICKERSDOGHOUSE.CO.UK

t’s never easy to leave our furry friends behind when we go on holiday, so why not take them with you? Luckily the holiday home market is well aware of the need for pet-friendly accommodation and one company that stands out in this sector is John Bray Cornish Holidays, with a whopping 150 pet-friendly self-catering holiday homes available. Whether you’re looking for romantic boltholes with cosy crackling fires, picturesque fisherman’s cottages or contemporary beachside holiday houses for all the family to relax in, they have something to suit. Out of all the places where you can enjoy a paw-some beach holiday with your four-legged friend, north Cornwall is one of the best, with 280 miles of South West Coast Path to explore and enjoy. There are vast stretches of golden sandy beaches that remain dog friendly throughout the year. Not only is this part of the coast absolutely stunning, it also benefits from having three beaches – Rock, Daymer Bay and Port Isaac, which are dog-friendly throughout the year. While Polzeath has a dog ban from Easter to October, you can still head out on the surrounding coast paths during the summer to explore

with your waggy tailed friend. John Bray Cornish Holidays also offers weekend stays or mid-week breaks during low season, so you don’t need to sacrifice a whole week to escape to the coast. Take advantage of their short stay reduced rates and enjoy the art of relaxation while you have the run of Cornwall’s finest beaches with your loyal friend at your side. OF THE BEST

YEAR ROUND DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES Cornwall is replete with gorgeous sandy beaches and to choose a favourite is practically an impossible task.

W

hen narrowed down to those that are dogfriendly all year round it’s hard to choose ‘5 of the best’, so for this issue we’ve adopted a ‘name out of a hat’ approach and settled on the following beaches, each of which is perfect for you and your pooch to enjoy a seaside stroll, whatever the time of year.

POLPEOR COVE Located at Britain’s most southerly point on the Lizard peninsula, Polpeor Cove is a small, south-facing beach located next to the old lifeboat station at Lizard Point. There is a fantastic walk along the coastal path above the beach which, when tied in with a trip down to the water’s edge and a stop off at Polpeor Café, makes for a fantastic dog’s day out.

HOLYWELL BAY This huge gold, sandy beach backed by sand dunes is typical of the north coast’s wide, open bays. You may recognise the beach and the backdrop of Gull Rock out to sea from Poldark, and your dog is sure to love having so much room to bound, sniff and roll. This is a great beach for dogs with lots of energy!

MEXICO TOWANS As you might have guessed, a trip to Mexico Towans could quite easily fool you into believing you’ve been teleported to the Americas, especially in the summer. The towans form part of a stunning, four-mile stretch of sand that begins at the mouth of the Hayle estuary and continues all the way to the iconic lighthouse at Godrevy. The beach here is set against the dramatic backdrop of towering sand dunes, and your dog will delight in running, sniffing, digging and paddling, all in equal measure.

FISTRAL Long, sandy, west facing and backed by rocks and cliffs, Fistral is the perfect family beach, especially as furry, four-legged members are also welcome all year round! With amazing surf, restaurants all but on the beach, and facilities that include surf hire and lessons, Fistral is the perfect family playground if you’re exploring the coast with your dog.

s ' h c o o p A paradise

Broaden your Cornish horizon this year and discover the beautiful Meudon Hotel.

T

he Meudon Hotel is situated at the top of a valley. Rich with sub-tropical plants and an abundance of wildlife, it’s the perfect place to holiday with your four legged friends. Nine acres of tropical gardens are just waiting to be explored, with the walk through the valley leading you down to Bream Cove, the hotel’s own private beach. The centuries old gardens are one of Cornwall’s hidden horticultural jewels. They were created by famous Quaker family, the Foxes, who also created Trebah and Glendurgan gardens. The Foxes transported exotic plants and trees from the warm, temperate regions of the world to their Cornish gardens, where they flourished in our notoriously mild climate. There’s so much to see and explore, and it’s all nestled away from roads so your pup can run free amongst the foliage and splash through waves without the worry of traffic. There’s also easy access to the South West Coast Path from the hotel, so you can continue your walk to the tranquil shores of the Helford river in the west and Falmouth to the east. The Helford river is undeniably beautiful; in summer it transforms into a verdant paradise, its clear, still waters fringed by oak trees, giving a tropical feel to the area. Not to mention that before you get to Maenporth (in the east) all the hidden coves and beaches are dog friendly, so you don’t have to worry about avoiding dog bans. If you want to include refreshments along the way, simply head to the Ferryboat Inn, which is located along the west side of the river and welcomes dogs with open arms.

It truly is a beautiful and incredibly dog-friendly location, and the hotel itself promotes a warm welcoming feel, further enhanced by the friendly staff. The rooms are spacious with an air of contemporary design, taking inspiration from coast and garden with crisp, clean cotton and country views over the gardens and glimpses of Falmouth Bay. So, if you want to enjoy the sub-tropical paradise of the Helford river with your furry friend in tow, make sure to visit the Meudon Hotel and broaden your Cornish horizons this year. t’s that time of year again, spring is upon us and the weather is becoming tangibly warmer – nowhere more so than on the sub-tropical Isles of Scilly. And now that temperatures are on the rise, we here at Dogs Love Cornwall Living are gearing up for this year’s Walk Scilly, a ten day festival offering a choice of 40 themed and guided

made for walking. Unspoilt and uncrowded, they’re known for endless white sand beaches and rich, diverse habitats that are home to myriad flora and fauna. There’s no better way of exploring the islands’ amazing scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage than Walk Scilly’s rambles, hikes and strolls and, with expert local guides, the islands are well and truly brought to life. It comes as no surprise that dogs absolutely love exploring the wild reaches of Scilly. Fortunately, Walk Scilly also welcomes dogs. Take a stroll through the fields of England’s most south-westerly farm on St Agnes with owner, Tim Hicks and his son, Sam, on the St Agnes Troytown Farm Walk, Talk and Tour. Or hop aboard the St Agnes Sea Safari. This isolated and rugged part of Scilly is home to much of the islands’ marine life, and guides on board the safari will point out and identify the interesting local residents, including seals, seabirds and possibly even puffins! There are a whole host of fantastic walks taking place over the ten days, with plenty of

opportunities to stop for lunch and enjoy a flavour of the isles. Not all of the walks are dog friendly, but don’t let that put you off – it means you can head out on your own and explore with just you and your furry friend, an incredible experience along the seemingly untouched reaches of such a wild part of the world. April is a lovely time of year on the Isles of Scilly and this is a great festival to welcome both new and returning visitors to the islands. As walking festivals go, Walk Scilly is exceptional: friendly, intimate and distinctly Scillonian, with each walk offering a unique insight into island life. To see the full festival programme and to find out more, be sure to head to the Visit Isles of Scilly website. To book your walks, simply give the team a call! xploring the white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and scenic walks on the Isles of Scilly is only made better with your four-legged friend in tow. Watching them scamper around investigating new smells and splashing through the calm waters after sticks gives even more enjoyment to a coastal stroll, with the added benefit of being able to rest easy knowing your canine companion is comfortable and happy with you, not missing you at home. Karma St. Martin’s makes this all possible. The luxurious hotel prides itself on being dog friendly and has won bronze for ‘Best Dog-Friendly Business’ at the Cornwall Tourism Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018; the hotel team is aiming for at least silver this year! From the moment your furry friend arrives they’re welcomed with open arms – a treat, bowl, blanket and even a canine-friendly menu. The pet-loving Karma team also provides a dog sitting service, so you’re free to enjoy a spa treatment or make friends with the local seal colony on a snorkelling trip.

Enjoy a relaxing break with your four-legged friend at the beautiful Karma St. Martin’s this year. Unlike the main beaches on St Mary’s, the beaches on St Martin’s are dog friendly all year round and the hotel even provides complimentary towels for mucky pups to freshen up after a long day outdoors. Then for dinner head to the double AA Rosette restaurant for a delicious meal while your pooch has a snooze in your sumptuous room. If you’re dreaming of warm days, empty beaches and a bit of peace and quiet then make sure to visit Karma St. Martin’s either during April, before the school holidays when spring is just beginning to unfurl and the Scilly’s beautiful flowers are waking up in full force; or in October, when the days are still long and warm, and all the kids have gone back to school, leaving you free to explore Scilly’s everchanging landscape with just the two of you. or just £1, your furry friend is more than welcome to join you as you embark on a journey back in time and discover the excitement and nostalgia of steam on the Bodmin & Wenford Railway. Relax in style and enjoy a leisurely 13-mile round trip through beautiful countryside, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone age, as the era of a Cornish branch line in the 1950s reveals itself to you. ‘Paws-on-the-floor’ travel on Bodmin & Wenford’s everyday service trains means your dog can come along and explore the countryside on Cornwall’s only full-sized railway still operated by steam. There are plenty of walking opportunities nearby too, from the Bodmin Beacon Nature Reserve (within walking distance of Bodmin General Station), to the National Trust’s Lanhydrock Estate (alight at Bodmin Parkway). Follow nature trails in Cardinham Woods, or why not take the 18-mile long Camel Trail, which runs adjacent to a disused railway line right in the heart of Cornwall. Free parking is available at Bodmin General and you’ll find five more of Bodmin’s fantastic dog friendly attractions within walking distance! Trains run between here and Bodmin Parkway, where

connections can be made directly with mainline rail services, and with Boscarne Junction, which is situated on the Camel Trail. Passenger train services operate throughout the year, and daily from late May until early October. AWAY FROM IT ALL We catch up with North Coast Holiday Cottages, who give us their top five tips on making the most of your north coast stay. Having created a unique escape for families and couples with 14 beautiful cottages of varying sizes to choose from, the North Coast Holiday Cottages team offers purpose built homes that are comfortable, homely and stylish, all at once, ensuring you have the most relaxing stay. Here are owner Natalie’s top five suggestions to make the most of your north coast retreat. Pop to the local Whether you want to spend some quality time with just the two of you, or take the family for a pub lunch or dinner, The Portreath Arms is perfect for all occasions. Thanks to its location, it’s within easy distance whether you’re on foot or two wheels. Natalie tells us: “We love the Portreath Arms and have seen it transform in recent years to the pub it is now, and it’s still transforming now!”

Head to the beach The beach at Portreath is, quite simply, a ‘must visit’ for everyone, including dog lovers, beach goers, swimmers and photographers. There is a seasonal dog ban there between Easter and October, from 7am until 7pm, but outside of those dates and hours, it’s very much a haven for hounds! The view from the top of Tregay Hill is breathtaking, especially on a warm, clear day. You’ll find a shop here with everything you need for your day’s supplies, several good pubs and two restaurants beside the beach car park, all offering great food at reasonable prices. The sandy beach is loved by families, so much so that you could easily spend the whole day there. Stretch your legs The walk from Tehidy Woods to Deadman’s Cove begins through the Tehidy Country Park wildlife area and is home to famously friendly squirrels, but be sure to keep your dog on the lead!

36 | DOGS LOVE

CL--DGS--MAR--2019--ED--North Coast Holiday Cottages--2.00.indd 2

28/02/2019 13:50

The route follows through Tehidy Woods to Coombe before crossing the Reskajeage Downs to reach the north cliffs near Deadman’s Cove. From here, follow the coast path along the top of the steep cliffs to Basset’s Cove before re-entering Tehidy County Park, passing through the bluebell woods of the North Cliffs Plantation and completing the circular route. Stay in style Completed to the most exacting standards, each cottage at North Coast Holiday Cottages offers the utmost in holiday luxury, and many even enjoy their own hot tubs! What could be better than rounding off your day exploring the wild north coast with a nice soak in your own private Jacuzzi, with a glass of something chilled in hand? Each cottage also has wonderful views, and the lush vista of Cornwall’s rolling countryside is tough to beat with your morning coffee!

Relax and unwind For many, escaping to Cornwall is more than just a holiday; it’s a chance to retreat from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, so a quiet location hidden in the Cornish countryside is near, if not at, the top of their list. Thankfully, North Coast Holiday Cottages is tucked away in its own tranquil pocket of north Cornwall. It’s perfect for that ‘away from it all’ experience and yet, being within easy access of the A30, it’s ideally placed to enjoy all the fantastic attractions that Cornwall has to offer. It is, of course, also close to some superb beaches and, whether you’re looking for watersports or a walk along the South West Coast Path, surfing or a go at coasteering, you can enjoy all of this and more before retreating to the quietude of your own countryside cottage. e u c s e r m o r F TO RELEASE

We discover more about the amazing rehabilitation work that the Cornish Seal Sanctuary undertakes.

S

ituated at the mouth of the Helford river in Gweek, with stunning views of the river and rolling green hills, the seals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary are lucky to be able to rest and recuperate in such beautiful surroundings. Often pups are split up from their mothers and need time to mature before they’re ready to be returned to the ocean, or the sanctuary takes in injured seals who need to recover before being released back into the wild. In some cases, the sanctuary will provide a permanent home to animals that need special care from their team of marine animal experts, providing them with a future that they may not otherwise have. To be able to visit the rescued animals is a real treat for children and adults alike. It provides the chance to get closer to these majestic animals and witness their unique and playful personalities first hand. Not to mention the sanctuary is dog friendly too so you can take the whole family along, including your furry friends, to enjoy the wildlife and the beautiful surroundings (as long as they’re kept on leads, that is). The gift shop isn’t just for humans either! There are fantastic local homemade dog treats for sale and Seal Sanctuary dog bandanas. There are only a few areas dogs aren’t permitted: the Safari Bus, Seal Hospital and Café, although there is a sheltered outdoor seating area where they are more than welcome.

As part of the SEALIFE Trust charity, The Cornish Seal Sanctuary couldn’t do their vital work without the support of the public. Seal pups cost on average £2,000 to go through rehabilitation – and this doesn’t include those that require special care, such as Ted who came to the sanctuary with a broken jaw and needed surgery, or Harry, who was entangled in netting and wounded badly. The sanctuary is therefore very grateful for all their guests (including your four-legged friends) and donations that go towards helping with the costs of pup rehabilitation and medical care for the resident animals. It’s certainly a cause that is well worth a visit on any trip to the Lizard. FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL 01326 221361 OR VISIT WWW.VISITSEALIFE.COM/GWEEK

HOLIDAYING WITH

the hound

With just a little planning, the whole family, including the dog, can enjoy a cottage break in Cornwall. Toad Hall Cottages offer their top planning tips.

D

og owners will know that one of the toughest decisions when booking a holiday is what to do with your four-legged family member. If you don’t want your dog to pine for you (and vice versa!), why not bring them along? Walking, beach time, exploring and relaxing family bonding are just a few things you can enjoy on a dog-friendly cottage break in Cornwall so, with more than 70 dog-friendly cottages in beautiful locations throughout Cornwall, Toad Hall Cottages have put together a few things to remember when planning a holiday with dogs. Plan your car journey with plenty of time for toilet breaks! Not only does this allow everyone to stretch their legs and remain comfortable, it will help avoid any ‘accidents’. After all, dogs are unable to tell you they need to stop and use the bathroom! Take familiar bedding, toys and treats. This will help your dog settle quickly into new surroundings, and a happy, relaxed dog will be a great companion to share your holiday with. Cornwall is renowned for beautiful scenery, so it’s well worth doing your research on walks near your accommodation before you go. After a long journey, a walk can make everybody feel much better! Along a similar vein, it also pays to check out any dog restrictions on nearby beaches. There are many dog friendly days out, pubs and restaurants throughout Cornwall, including a number of beaches, but it’s worth checking first before you incur a fine.

Check your accommodation’s house rules ahead of your arrival. This will help you understand where your dog is allowed to go, and be aware of any new risks. If you’re on the beach all day, remember lots of water and some shade for your dog. Encourage them into the sea as well – a great way to cool off! Also be sure to take poo bags with you wherever you go, so everybody can enjoy Cornwall’s beautiful scenery without accidentally stepping in something! aving taken over the business just over two years ago, owners Geoff and Karen Dennison and their team of staff ensure a warm welcome awaits you at The Cornish Arms, Pendoggett, a traditional country pub dating back to the 16th Century. Situated near the north coast, between popular destinations Port

Isaac and Tintagel, The Cornish Arms is ideally located to explore this rugged region of Cornwall, and the many attractions it has to offer. The Cornish Arms is just three miles away from the attractive fishing village of Port Isaac, an idyllic filming location thanks to its winding streets and whitewashed cottages and a beautiful place to explore on foot. To the north of the pub is Boscastle, an area of coast that’s acclaimed for its outstanding beauty – a beauty that’s inspired generations of authors such as Thomas Hardy, whose footsteps you can trace along this picturesque part of Cornwall’s coastline. After a long day exploring the abundant attractions that Cornwall has to offer, what better way to relax than to sit down with a refreshing pint at The Cornish Arms? The beer garden has lush green grass and sturdy wooden benches from which you can admire the quirky form of the pub itself, which looks warped with age and with a host of stories to tell. Head into the pub on an evening, and enjoy the gentle ambiance of exposed beams and dark wood that creates a warm and comforting environment to enjoy your food. Karen tells us: “Our freshly prepared traditional pub food is made wherever possible with locally sourced ingredients and is served every lunchtime and evening.” For the gin lovers out there, the pub also boasts a wide selection of over 100 gins from Cornwall and beyond as well as its variety of Cornish beers, lagers and ciders. There’s something to suit every taste and you can top it all off with a comfortable night’s sleep in one of the seven en-suite rooms available – which may be necessary after an evening of gin tasting! Bryher in acti on!

Meet BRYHER Every day is ‘bring your dog to work day’ here at Dogs Love Cornwall Living! This year, we’d like you to meet the endlessly energetic Bryher.

Bryher is… A very cute and cheeky two-year old cavapoo. He adores his younger brother, Morris, and they spend hours playing together. Bryher looks up to Lev, the eldest of our office trio, but is constantly being told off by him.

Bryher’s favourite walk… Anywhere. So long as he can run and chase a ball he’s happy. Did we mention that his energy knows no bounds?

Bryher will… Given half a chance, Bryher will steal your shoe and hide it under a bed. He won’t chew it, he just loves

to play hide and seek. If you leave a bag open on the floor in the office, he’ll happily rifle through it and help himself to anything he fancies, be it food or a hairbrush. If you can’t find him or he’s too quiet, you’d better be suspicious – he will inevitably be up to something mischievous! All this, however, adds up to his cheeky nature, which we in the office can’t help but love.

Bryher loves… Bryher loves nothing more than a cuddle and he will try to talk to you too, although he’s not quite as good at listening, especially when there’s a shoe to be stolen!

WALKS AND WAGGY

We catch up with Jackie Warden, the friendly face of Happy Dogs Day Care in Breage.

W

hether you live down here and have a busy working schedule, or are holidaying with your hound and are unable to take them to particular ‘human-only’ attractions, it can be difficult knowing what to do. Even harder is leaving your furry friend at a kennel for the day, guilty in the knowledge that you’re having the best of times while they’re waiting for you to return. This is where Jackie Warden, founder of Happy Dogs Day Care, comes in. Jackie took the plunge to set up the business around seven years ago, being tired of the mundane nine-to-five that she’d never loved. She tells us: “I’ve never looked back. For years, I knew I wanted to work with dogs. The problem always seemed to be that making a living from it just didn’t seem possible. I guess it’s always difficult to imagine making a full-time living out of the things we love!” But that’s exactly what she does, and it’s fair to say that Jackie has built a sterling reputation in the local area, attracting residents and holidaymakers

alike. Based between Helston and Penzance in the sleepy village of Breage, Jackie takes her four-legged guests on multiple walks every day, all year round. Whether it’s down to Longrock beach looking out to St Michael’s Mount, or in the fields and meadows surrounding Breage, it’s fair to say that the dogs staying with Jackie have a great time! Jackie continues: “The thing I love most about my job is watching the dogs interact and socialise. Their relationships change and develop – I have a steady stream of regular dogs that come in for day care, as well as boarders whose owners go away. The regular guests soon become fast friends and now, when they arrive in the mornings and see their mates, they’re always really excited.” But it takes hard work and careful patience on Jackie’s part to earn their trust. “When a dog first comes to me it’s understandably unsure of what’s going on, or whether its owner is even coming back. But after a couple of hours, a nice walk, lots of reassurance and cuddles, they soon start

to feel safe and relaxed. It’s never long before my home becomes their home from home, too!” For Jackie, building relationships with animals is second nature, and it’s in this that her clients have found themselves able to place their trust. It seems that no matter how weird, whacky, excitable or calm her four-legged guests are, the way she interacts with the many and varied characters in her care never fails to bring out the best in man’s best friend. Hounds and HERITAGE

Head to Cornwall Gold with your furry friend in tow and gain a fascinating insight into Cornwall’s industrial heritage.

A

day out at Cornwall Gold is perfect for the whole family, but did you know that dogs love it there too? Indeed, furry friends are not just accepted, but very much welcome across the entire site! Cornwall Gold offers something for couples, families and any group and, with water and biscuits always available, your pooch needn’t miss out on the day either. After a round of Krazy Golf or having had a go at panning for gold in Tolgus Stream, be sure to pop into the spacious Cornish Pantry, where you can enjoy Taste of the West Gold Award-winning Cornish food, both indoors and out depending on the weather. Afterwards, why not browse the beautiful collections of jewellery and gifts, made in the heart of Cornwall, or take your loved ones on a trip around Tolgus Tin Mill? Tolgus has been in action since 1865 and is at the heart of the site. In fact, it is the last original streaming works in Europe, and tin is still smelted here and mixed with silver and gold to produce the absolutely breathtaking Tolgus Collection. Proceeds from this range of jewellery are invested back into the mill and its restoration project. What’s

more, whether it’s for a loved one or as a treat unto yourself, each item of jewellery oozes Cornish character and charm. So, for a day that everybody can enjoy, including your four-legged friend, be sure to pencil in a trip to Cornwall Gold. It’s only ten minutes from the coast too, with its beaches and coast paths that dogs simply love to explore! FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL 01209 203280 OR VISIT WWW.CORNWALL-GOLD.COM
