Diamond jewellery needn’t cost the earth
New exhibit at
Wheal Martyn Clay Works For ten years, award-winning family run jewellery company, Ethica Diamonds, has created exceptional and individually designed fine ewellery that lasts a lifetime, right here in Cornwall. Founder Elaine and daughter Emily promise ‘unparalleled beauty and uncompromised ethics’ with every piece, and a fair price. Elaine tells us: “We are passionate about environmental and ethical good practice, providing excellent customer service, but most of all making people happy!” Every piece of jewellery from Ethica Diamonds is specially made to order and can be delivered in 15 working days or less through their speedy priority service. They also specialise in bespoke diamond jewellery, cast using fair trade or recycled precious metals and set using their own man made diamonds. The Ethica Diamond is unmatched for brilliance, toughness and
longevity, optically identical to the finest natural diamonds and is independently graded for insurance purposes. Elaine continues: “We are honoured to be part of your special journey, bringing your ideas to life and producing beautiful, heirloom quality jewellery. Our Jewellery Quarter workshop team have over 25 years’ experience of handcrafting diamond ewellery, so you can place your confidence in us to transform your ideas and inspirations into beautiful diamond ewellery, that is hand finished to the highest possible standard.”
Escape to a historic sanctuary this autumn and discover Cornwall’s china clay mining history at Wheal Martyn Clay Works. The extensive outdoor grounds are home to a variety of historic buildings and artefacts, amongst picturesque natural scenery and woodland trails.
“We are committed to quality and customer service,” laine finishes, creating timeless jewellery that is good for the planet and lasts a lifetime.”
Venturing inside, view the intriguing exhibit ‘Relic’ by Neil Brownsword, who won the Quartz Award for St Austell’s Whitegold International Ceramic Prize in 2019. The artwork features an arrangement of delicate porcelain flowers across the floor of the historic pan kiln, reminiscent of the iconic sky tips. The work connects the industrial mining histories of St Austell and North Staffordshire through the transformation of china clay into ceramics, and is a metaphor for the need to sustain traditional craft practices.

Sometimes, making home improvements to a Cornish property is not as straightforward as we would like. any properties in the Duchy are nestled in Conservation Areas, where certain restrictions place limits on what we are and are not able to do, particularly on the outside. Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems recently completed a project faced with such restrictions. The estrel team have built a reputation for working alongside other local tradesmen to offer Cornish homes an array of bespoke, practical solutions when it comes to maximising their outside space. And whilst their work often appears in the form of balustrade systems framed with stainless steel, this recent project – at a home within a Conservation Area – called for a more sympathetic solution. As you can see from the pictures, the gorgeous wooden frames that surround the glass really blend beautifully with the home’s surroundings. ot only that,
at a time when making the most of time spent at home has never been more on our minds, it’s not hard to imagine yourself sitting for afternoons at a time simply soaking in the views from a space as beautiful as this. f you’ve been pondering how you might capitalise on your home’s outside space and are looking for a solution that’s as sympathetic to your home’s surroundings as it is to your lifestyle, why not contact the Kestrel team and see how they can help? Cornish photographer releases children’s book
The Little Gin Shack has moved! That’s right, despite a ma or refit ust last winter, Wadebridge’s Little Gin Shack has now moved to a larger premises on the town’s main street – Molesworth Street. The new space offers more seating, as well as outside space, which means more room to browse and sample its liquid offering. In fact, up to 16 guests can now sit (in groups of four) to enjoy a tipple of their choosing – the only challenge is going to be choosing from the bar! The team’s gin offering now stands at nearly 180 different elixirs, with some fantastic new additions including gin from Porthilly Spirit Distillery, Tarquin’s Cornish Sunshine Blood Orange (the perfect Cornish sundowner), and Lantic Distillery’s Summer gin. So, if you’re hoping to make the most of the early autumn sunshine with a glass of your chosen tipple to hand, why not pop into adebridge’s ittle in hack and find a tonic to soothe those post-summer blues?
Available now to buy from Waves Surf Art galleries in Porthleven and Falmouth, as well as from the website, Coral and the Cornish Heart is the new children’s book from Cornish wave photographer, Mike Lacey. We’re particularly excited as it’s being published right here in Porthleven – the home of Cornwall Living! The book’s main character is Mikey and the story is, in fact, a true one. It begins with the news that Mikey (aka Mike Lacey) and his wife are going to have a baby, and as with many new fathers, Mikey is a little nervous. He takes to the sea to ask his underwater friends Ninja Crab Nina and Sophie the Seal for their advice, and from there, the book follows Mikey’s journey before the baby is born, on his search for the perfect picture. But that’s
enough of the spoilers – you’ll have to read to find out what happens next, so be sure to pop into Waves Surf Art Gallery in Porthleven or Falmouth to pick up your copy.
For more information call 07740 639565 or visit www.thelittleginshack.co.uk
Whilst you’re there, you may as well check out Mike’s illustrious array of Cornish wave photography prints. He also has a range of gifts and wave inspired goodies to choose from, and with Christmas just around the corner, now couldn’t be a better time to pick up that perfect gift for a friend or family member that loves Cornwall. A truly authentic experience The Museum of Cornish Life offers a fascinating insight into Cornwall’s rich heritage. The museum building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of your visit as you journey back in time. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to

ven in changing times it’s still possible to plan and hold the perfect wedding in Cornwall. To glean some top tips on what you can do over the coming months to make sure your big day is everything you’ve dreamed of, we talk to wedding and events planner Jenny Granlund (jennywrenweddingsandevents. co.uk to find out how it’s still possible to tie the knot and ensure there is still love in the time of Corona. Jenny has been running her business for the last seven years and has built up an invaluable bank of connections and knowledge, meaning there really isn’t anything she doesn’t know about planning a wedding. Many of Jenny’s clients use her services because they live out of county or indeed out of the country, but who have such an a nity or close connection with Cornwall that they want to get married here. And who can blame them? The Duchy offers stunning venues and jaw-dropping locations, incredible wedding suppliers and the most amazing backdrops for photographs. For Jenny and her team, this year’s wedding season has been like no other. With many weddings having to be postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions, they have had to think on their feet in order to reschedule or rethink for their clients. With this in mind, Jenny has some advice on how best to plan a wedding during uncertain times, whether you have enlisted the services of a wedding planner or are going it alone.

“Although this is an unpredictable time, it does provide couples the time to stop, think and plan for the future, whilst also giving them and their families and friends a much anticipated celebration to look forward to once we are all safe to be together with our loved ones again,” explains Jenny. If you have had to postpone your wedding then Jenny suggests that you contact your venue and suppliers as soon as possible: “If you have a wedding planner they will do this for you. Many couples will be postponing, resulting in and dates filling up fast, so make this a priority. “Contacting guests should also be a priority as invitations will likely have been sent. Emailing is a great way to save time and expense, and will usually also elicit a speedy response. A change in date may mean that some guests who could not make it previously may now be able to come, so factor that into your plans and ask them to RSVP again if their status has changed with the new date. And don’t forget to remind them to rearrange their accommodation if they booked direct,” adds Jenny.

Sadly, it’s inevitable that there might be some suppliers who are unable to transfer to a rearranged date. Jenny always recommends taking out wedding insurance, and this should cover any deposits that have been paid up front: ou may also find that some suppliers may ask for another payment installment before your wedding date to help with their cash flow. t’s nice to help them out if you can, after all you want their business to be in a healthy position still by the time your wedding comes. And if you are having a church wedding, but live out of county, you should also double check as you may have to repeat your residency period.” Jenny tells us that brides-to-be shouldn’t despair and that actually having more time to plan should be taken as a positive. Now is the time to be extra productive, paying particular attention to the finishing touches which you may have not thought of or had time or budget to organise previously. “But be careful to not get carried away and just add things on for the sake of it. emember your wedding budget and the vision you had for your original day and stay true to that!”, says Jenny wisely. ome couples have found that they have been able to postpone and successfully rebook a new date with their existing venue, but

others have not been so lucky, or are just starting out on their venue search. So, how can this be achieved during current restrictions? Jenny explains: “For whatever reason you are unable to visit in person, don’t despair! Many venues are offering virtual tours online, either live if the owners are based on site, or via pre recorded films. ou could book a planner to help you, as many planners offer a venue sourcing service. They should know an abundance of venues in the county and often have had experience working at them previously, so their advice is often priceless.”

With regards to suppliers, Jenny recommends that you really do your research “Look at reviews (not just on the supplier’s website but use social media and internet search engines , oin wedding planning forums to ask advice. ou could even ask the supplier if they could put you in touch with one of their previous couples to speak to them direct. Ask the supplier for a video call, you need to like them as a person as well as the product or service they offer, and an informal chat can help you get to know them a little.” t’s inevitable that some couples may be nervous about booking any venues or suppliers at the moment, but many have excellent Covid-19 policies that will allow you change your date if needed. Jenny suggests that if this is the case then ust make sure that

you have it in writing or included on your contract so that you are covered for all eventualities. And don’t be disheartened if your date is not available for next year. Think outside the box and opt for an out of season wedding where there might be better availability. Cornwall is glorious in all its seasons and having an autumn or a winter wedding gives all sorts of new and exciting opportunities when it comes to flowers, food and indeed the dress. any Cornish venues are also thinking on their feet and offering some stunning lopement ackages’. t may be that you’ve decided to opt for a more private experience that will allow you to tie the knot this year, or your financial situation has changed along with your budget. Whatever the reason, your intimate wedding in ornwall could be ust a click or a call away. enny’s final word of wisdom is that you should now spend your time wisely ticking off some of those necessary but oft overlooked or avoided tasks. “Creating your playlist is fun but time consuming so little and often over the coming months will give you the perfect soundtrack for the big day. Don’t avoid your table-plan! It’s often one of my couples least favourite obs, so get it out of the way while you have some time and some headspace. Think about your photography list and don’t forget your favours you may even want to use this time to learn a new skill and make your own.” So, no bride should be disheartened, no couple should be disappointed. Cornwall’s wedding industry is very much open for business. Turn to page 84 for some inspiration on venues and suppliers, and good luck with planning the wedding of your dreams here in ornwall.

enowned for beautiful tiles and paints, the Fired Earth range draws on the expertise of tile manufacturers across the globe, offering a wealth of options for the discerning homeowner. Hand-decorated Moroccan designs and jewel-like glass mosaics sit alongside hardwearing porcelain flooring, timeless marble, and crisp architectural slates. In short, there are tiles for every style of home, whether classically elegant or requiring cutting edge modernity – and for a wide variety of budgets too. Based in Little Castle Street, Truro, Fired Earth Truro is the Cornwall Licensee for the Fired Earth range of products, locally owned by Clive Martin Interiors Ltd. The store places a keen focus on delivering exemplary service throughout Cornwall, with a small, friendly and knowledgeable team always on hand to provide expert advice, whether you’re planning a major refurbishment or simply want to give a room a quick update. Fired Earth Truro Manager, Julie Lingard, tells us: “We can help with your initial design and colour choices and then manage and oversee the complete ordering and delivery process for you. To assist with your budgeting, we regularly have discounts and promotions available which we can offer to our customers who come into the Truro showroom to discuss tile, paint and bathroom requirements.” Julie points us to their latest tile collections, which take inspiration from across the world and include decorative Naples porcelain tiles – equally at home in contemporary and traditional interiors – as well as Onda hexagon mosaics, which are brimming with vibrant Mediterranean style. There’s also the new Metallic Vitreum collection, which is perfect for adding show-stopping glamour to your kitchen or bathroom, while frosted Nordic Glass

tiles are available in a gentle palette that promises to stand the test of time. But that’s not all. As Julie explains: “There are endless options if you’re looking for robust flooring for a busy family home, and the latest launches include the WOOD COLLECTION, a completely new range of oak flooring with a variety of finishes.” Clearly, it’s not just tiles that draw homeowners from across the county to Fired Earth Truro. The tile ranges are complemented perfectly by Fired Earth’s paint collection. With 12 beautiful and incredibly versatile new shades recently launched, the 120-colour palette offers everything from sophisticated neutrals to deep, inky blues and bold pinks, so there’s something here to suit your style and budget. The paints are all water-based and have been developed with the environment in mind. They’re easy to apply too and provide exceptional coverage, making them a favourite with decorators. If you’re unsure as to which colour or shade would work best for you, why not pop in and speak to the team? They’re always happy to discuss colour combinations and help select the perfect shade to complement a particular tile, bathroom or kitchen colour scheme. They even have painted swatches available to use, which are especially useful when it comes to choosing and making sure everything matches. As if all this wasn’t enough, Fired Earth also has a wide range of exceptionally welldesigned contemporary and classic bathroom fittings. LIFESTYLE
GET STUCK IN! Buzzing with an energy that screams creativity and art, the High Street in Falmouth is home to an arts and crafts emporium: The Grey Lurcher.
T
hree years ago, walking the cobbled streets of Falmouth, Julie and Chris Duddle noticed a sign in a shop window that simply read 'To Rent'. With shared backgrounds in textile design and retail, an ideal opportunity had presented itself to them. The High Street appealed to them for its unique character and the numerous other small creative businesses that line the street. Surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and incredible views it certainly exudes a chilled vibe. Opening in October 2017 with a lot of hope and very little stock, The Grey Lurcher was up and running. Positively evolving over the last three years and sticking to a formula of providing gifts for you or your home, The Grey Lurcher also stocks the iconic range of paints from Annie Sloane. It was during the second year of trading when Annie Sloan, curious as to whether The Grey Lurcher would like to stock her paint, approached Julie and Chris. Julie jumped at the chance; as an artist and textile designer, it seemed the right product to sell. After training with Annie Sloan at her headquarters in Oxford, it was
go-time, and fans of Sloan soon became regular customers! The Grey Lurcher stocks everything required to up-cycle furniture, including paintbrushes, waxes and varnishes. Samples of Annie Sloan fabrics are on display, along with books and stencils. During the Covid-19 lockdown, the paint sales increased and Julie even had time to wield a brush herself, splitting her time between painting furniture at home, and renovating the house that they’d recently moved into! An avid up-cycler, Julie is a fountain of knowledge on the subject and is always happy to offer advice on colour and technique. One-to-one workshops are available, but with the amazing resources on offer at the Annie Sloan website (anniesloan.com), it is just a case of rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in!

THE AIR WE
BREATHE We discover a renewable heating solution that is both cost and energy efficient.
ABOVE é Reducing your cabon output should help, not hinder, the pursuit of your dream home INSET ì GreenGenUK are experts at providing renewable home solutions
R
educing household carbon output is a hot topic at the moment. With the recent introduction of the government’s Green Homes Grant, a scheme designed to kick-start the construction industry following COVID-19, focus is very much on a green recovery. So, where does the air we breathe fit in to all of this Air source heat pumps are one of the UK’s most renewable heating solutions. They comprise of a unit that sits externally, with a fan that draws air in. Internally, a refrigerant gas is kept cooler than the external air temperature so that when this air passes over the gas, its temperature rises. The refrigerant gas is then compressed causing an upgrade in the heat to what is required to provide space heating and hot water. This heat then passes through a heat exchanger and is distributed around your property. As these units are designed to work alongside your existing central heating system, and require just a hot water cylinder internally, installation causes minimal disruption to the home. And that’s not the only benefit, as air source heat pumps are listed as one of the primary measures eligible for the Green Homes Grant, two-thirds of the cost to upgrade your heating system could be
covered – up to a total of £5,000. Combine that with subsidies available through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), a scheme that pays home and business owners for the renewable heat generated by this type of heating system, and installation costs are regularly being fully recovered. As many homes in Cornwall don’t have access to mains gas, opting for a renewable alternative makes perfect sense both for the planet and the purse. Local experts, GreenGenUK, have nearly 20 years of experience in the field and are best placed to be able to provide guidance, design and installation. Their team of renewable experts are on hand to provide free, impartial assistance to guide you down the path towards the ultimate renewable solution. Don’t delay, now couldn’t be a better time to go green!

However, we are very pleased with the performance of the hot water we are getting. In conclusion, thank you very much to GreenGen for your professionalism and promptness in our being able to stop using oil and move to the more effective Ecodan heat pump.” – GreenGenUK customer based in St Agnes.

LED BY VALUES It is to a philosophy of shared values that Oltco owes its success and growth to become the UK’s leading resin bound driveway company.
ABOVE é Oltco has become one of the UK's leading specialists in resin bound solutions INSET ì Oltco Directors, Johnny Pearce and Tom Stringer
well as a Cornish team that's grown rapidly in recent months, Oltco also has 25 franchises across the UK, all of which share the same core values. Always keen to delve deeper into what customers have to say, we’re certainly not disappointed by the testimonials on the Oltco website, and in fact, it doesn’t take long to see the company's aforementioned values reflected by the long list of stellar reviews. Whilst all comment on the fantastic job done by the Oltco team – which seems to come as standard – others describe the team as “true professionals”, commending the “absolutely fantastic service” and hailing Oltco as a “breath of fresh air in this industry”. A recurrent theme is the degree of professionalism and courtesy displayed on the jobs Oltco undertakes, and this takes us back to Tom and Johnny’s theory that it’s far easier to teach skills than it is values. It's fair to say that without a team that shares Oltco’s values of customer service, professionalism and attention to detail, how else could Oltco have become the UK’s leading resin bound specialist?
"
S
ince being founded in 2004, Oltco has developed and grown from its HQ in Newquay to become a Cornish business success story, renowned for its forward-thinking approach. Whilst the business now offers innovative resin bound solutions to a range of areas across the UK, Directors Johnny Pearce and Tom Stringer are incredibly proud of their connection to the south west, and not just because it’s their home. Oltco is a values led business, its ethos centred on feeling good about the work it does and the decisions it makes. Here in the south west, those decisions tend to be geared towards sustainability, 100% client satisfaction, and a healthy work-life balance. “For me,” explains Johnny, “life’s all about happiness and spending quality time with my family. This pursuit for happiness is what drives us at Oltco; not just for Tom and myself, but for the whole team.” This translates to Oltco's business decisions too, and ohnny confirms that we have to be 100% happy with the choices we make, both for ourselves and for our clients.” A key point he makes is that Oltco's values need to be shared by the whole team, in order for them all to reap the rewards. Both Johnny and Tom firmly believe that in order to build a business, you need the right team alongside you; that it is far easier to teach skills than it is to instil values. Perhaps it’s this philosophy to which Oltco owes its success? After all, as
a breath of fresh air in the industry

Why Forest Holidays is the ultimate Cornish escape for couples.
F
orest Holidays is a break for all the family, but there’s something rather special about escaping to one of their cosy cabins as a couple. It’s all too easy for a relationship to fall into a rather mundane routine at home, so nature is essential for rekindling the very essence of your love as a couple. ere are five reasons why we think the cabins at Forest Holidays Deerpark are the perfect nest for a romantic retreat.

Away from all of life’s distractions, you’ll recapture the romance that brought you together. lorious countryside views, endless trees and a sense of tranquillity that needs seeing to be believed. It’s these ingredients that create the ultimate recipe for a couple’s escape; your days are your own, surrounded by nothing but the natural calm of the great outdoors. Escape from it all in stunning scenery The beautiful Deerpark is deep in a stunning wooded valley, beside an ancient millpond. hichever way you turn there’s a view waiting to be uncovered. hether you awake to misty mornings or bright blue skies, just being in the forest can be magical, and sometimes, a change of scenery is just the ticket for enlivening your time spent together. Even your morning coffee tastes better in the forest, and in the evening, you can make meal times long, extended affairs on the decking, soaking up the fresh air and marvelling at the patchwork of trees. Be at one with nature There’s something so soothing and relaxing about spotting wildlife in its natural habitat. Simply listen to the birdsong on the decking or spot the animals that call the forest ‘home’. It’s these things that promise to steer your conversation away from the norm and ignite a passion in your relationship. Bathing in the forest, too, is a popular recent trend, one based on research that suggests spending time in a forest and being at one with nature helps to reduce feelings of stress, encouraging a sense of wellbeing.

Your charity, saving lives during Covid-19 Saving lives is this charity’s mission. Despite the pandemic, illness and injury were not put into lockdown and it was incredibly important that the charity operations adapted to make sure the crew and helicopter could respond to those in their hour of need.

The crew have continued to attend children and adults, including those who are suspected Covid-19 cases, bringing their enhanced critical care skills. Under PHE guidelines, the crew have been permitted to transport confirmed Covid-19 patients by air. The critical care paramedic team are wearing PPE for all patients and enhanced levels of PPE for the patients/procedures that carry the most significant risk of infections. The pilots are also wearing PPE and where possible avoid any patient contact. The charity installed a fabric screen to segregate the cockpit from the clinical space of the helicopter to help further protect pilots, who are a scarce resource. More rigorous cleaning is being carried out between missions to not only protect the crew but to protect other seriously ill or injured patients.
Become a 'Groundcrew' volunteer
With a busy Summer season, an influx of visitors puts an even greater importance on the air ambulance remaining in the skies. With more people in the Duchy and greater numbers outdoors, missions can often double or triple over the Summer months. It is vital that the crew continue to meet this demand.

Future lives depend on you Cornwall Air Ambulance needs your support to help the charity to continue responding to seriously sick and injured patients, following the impact of Covid-19 on fundraising. A predicted loss of £1 million by the end of the year is expected due to the closure of charity shops and the cancellation of traditional fundraising events. This could start to have huge consequences for the charity and the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. This sustained lack of fundraising income could mean the charity has to take steps to reduce the cost of operating the service, which could include reducing the number of hours the helicopter flies every day. Future lives depend on ensuring the helicopter can fly to as many people as possible every single day.
Air Operations Officer, Steve Garvey, explains how important this period of time is for the charity: “We don’t want anyone to be left behind because of the knock-on impact of this pandemic. We have a brand new aircraft with increased capabilities, we want to make sure we can continue to use it to its full potential. But the reality is, without the funding we need, we might have to look at changes in the way we operate in the future. The aircrew have worked hard to keep flying during the pandemic, and we have adapted our ways of working and the protective measures in the helicopter. With your help we will be able to continue to bring the level of care we currently do to as many seriously sick and injured patients as possible.”

A REMOTE

O
n 12th July, Helena was enjoying a circular walk in Madron when her foot became wedged between two rocks and she heard something crack. Helena said: “We had covered the worst part of the terrain, but my foot just caught on something. I told my husband I couldn’t get up, I thought I was going to pass out. I was in a lot of pain.” The couple were at Ding Dong Mine, a remote area with poor telephone reception. They managed to get through to 999 to call for help. A family who were passing and witnessed the incident used the ‘what3words’ app to give the call handler a precise location. With no road access to the area, Cornwall Air Ambulance was tasked. Pilot Al White landed nearby on the gorse. Critical care paramedics Lisa Ball and Pete Storer attended Helena to assess her injuries. Helena added: “There was a huge sense of relief when the helicopter arrived – it was like the light at the end of the tunnel. The paramedics were amazing, they gave me morphine and made me feel a lot more comfortable. Being local, you never think you’ll go on a Sunday stroll, in an area you’ve walked in many times before, and end up needing the air ambulance. I’m just so grateful they were there; we couldn’t do without them.” Helena was taken by helicopter to a nearby field where she was transferred to a land ambulance and taken onwards to West Cornwall Hospital. She suffered a fractured ankle. Lisa said: “Helena was in a very remote area; we were up to our waists in gorse getting from the helicopter to the scene. Our priority was to get Helena safely off the moorland – thankfully, she did not suffer severe injuries and could go to hospital in a land ambulance. It’s great to hear she is recovering well.”
What is ‘what3words’? In an emergency, every minute matters. what3words is an app which makes it easier for to find the exact location of an incident. It has given every three metres square in the world a unique identifier made of three words – making the location of any emergency very easy to describe and share. This incredible app has helped to locate nearly , incidents since it first started being used by emergency services. The crew of Cornwall Air Ambulance have used the app multiple times to find patients. To locate, search or navigate to a what3words address, all you need is the app. It is free to download for both iOS and Android and works entirely o ine making it ideal for use in areas of the county with an unreliable data connection. Make sure you have it downloaded on your device and know how to use it, to help save time, resource and lives.

Whether the last dance is over or has yet to begin, celebrate the occasion at the Rod and Line inn.
F
or lovers and guests celebrating a happy ever after, the Rod and Line – a 16th century inn nestling in the tiny village of Tideford – provides an idyllic venue for pre or post-wedding celebrations. It’s an exquisite place to stay too, having a wealth of secret boutique rooms, separate from the pub itself, all of which are beautifully decorated. Some have gorgeous feature baths; all boast luxury linen and Cornish organic toiletries. nside the inn, you’ll find a quintessential ‘old world’ bar with an unrivalled atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot for sharing wedding stories over a glass of wine or ale, before tasting some of the Rod and Line’s famous, locally sourced and freshly prepared food. For those of you who’ve planned a winter wedding, you can relax in front of the crackling open fire in the summer, sip champagne in the sun with your loved ones on the inn’s south-facing patio. In addition to all of this, the Rod and Line also boasts a standalone five bedroom town house, complete with its own garden and patio. This is perfect for friends celebrating your nuptials, and the best part is that it’s dog friendly!
Situated just a ten-minute drive from the beguilingly beautiful south coast of Cornwall, and in close proximity to the grand romantic estates of Pentilly, Boconnoc and St Germans, the Rod and Line is also well placed for easy access to the A38, which makes day trips around Cornwall’s innumerable attractions a simple matter of hopping in the car. In short, it’s the perfect base for both pre and post-wedding celebrations, but be warned: in a county where it is impossible not to lose your heart, you may well find yourselves celebrating more than one happy ever after.

T
he team at MEDfacials, Truro – Cornwall’s trusted aesthetic skin and hair care clinic, led by Dr Joachim Stolte – have been working hard to re-open the clinic and offer their patients leading solutions for skin and hair care worries, and are delighted to announce that they are now adding a brand new treatment to their portfolio – ThermaVein, the gold standard for thread vein removal. ThermaVein is an advanced technology that uses Thermocoagulation to seal the thread vein walls. Using pulses of energy, it causes the thread veins (otherwise known as spider veins) to instantly, and permanently, disappear. ThermaVein can be used to treat facial and leg thread veins, facial redness, milia (small white dots), skin tags and Campbell-de-Morgan spots (red dots or bumps). Dr Stolte tells us: “This is a truly exciting treatment for patients who are concerned with thread veins or facial redness. It requires no bandaging and carries no risk of
damaging the skin’s pigmentation, and the results are both immediate and permanent. So many of our patients have told us they would love to have this treatment, and so we’re proud to be offering them the gold standard of care in our clinic once again.” f you would like to find out more about ThermaVein or any of the hair and skin treatments available at MEDfacials, be sure to contact Dr Stolte by email or give the clinic a call, and arrange your free, no obligation consultation.

Where creatives
COME TOGETHER Next time you visit the south coast of Cornwall, why not seek out the beautiful harbour of Charlestown?
C
lose to the market town of St Austell, Charlestown is known for its historic tall ships, as well as being a film location for many TV dramas, including Poldark. Overlooking the main car park is The Old Workshop, a former gun store built in circa 1800, with the later addition of a sail loft. Many original features retain the feel of a bygone age, whilst sympathetic refurbishment has brought it firmly into the modern era. Cscape Art, the studio and gallery of artist, Sarah Blakey, and her photographer husband, Mick, is central to The Old Workshop. Looking to capture the essence of the local area, Sarah paints images of work and leisure. Her original style depicts scenes from Cornish mines and the china clay industry, as well as life of the harbours of Devon and Cornwall. Mick’s photographs capture the beauty of Cornwall’s scenery with colour or monochrome and techniques such as slow exposures and panoramic formats. He spends many hours in search of that elusive land or seascape, to which he adds his own artistic style. Amongst the antique, vintage and retro stock at ail oft mporium you’ll find jewellery, glass, china and silver, as well as collectable toys, books and records. Small pieces of furniture, kitchenalia and other interesting items can also be found. For medals and other militaria, as well as books, check out the cabinets of Kathleen Moorshead. Kerry Partis stocks many unusual collectables, and Denise Howard has a large range of coins and miniature items. Whether you want a walking stick or a vintage camera, you’ll find plenty to choose from here, and at reasonable prices too. On the site of a historic lime kiln, The Craft Kiln – just inside The Old Workshop’s main gate – showcases Cornish crafts of all kinds. This co-operative style gallery houses the work of many individual and highly talented makers, meaning there’s a great chance of finding unique pieces not available elsewhere. Whether you want tea wallets, felted purses, fused glass or embroidery, you’re sure to find the perfect gift (or a treat to yourself!), with a great display of woodware, pottery and unusual pictures, among a host of other crafts.
The Old Workshop is a wonderful coming together of creatives, and with Christmas just around the corner, it couldn’t be a better time to visit. For more information and this year’s opening hours, be sure to visit the website.

Mel Chambers champions 13th century techniques to create stunning and utterly unique fired clay tiles.
é ì ABOVE Stunning new designs are the fruit of Mel's isolation in lockdown
DID YOU KNOW? Alchemy is “any seemingly magical process of transmuting ordinary materials into something of true merit.” – The Free Dictionary.
I
n a time of great uncertainty, many small businesses have struggled to survive, but being ever the optimist and always finding a silver lining in every cloud, local Cornish artist, Mel Chambers, of Alchemy Tiles, has used the time afforded by the current pandemic wisely, to develop her work to even greater heights. Although you can normally find her at shows and exhibitions across the UK, her time in isolation in the studio has flowered into stunning new colours and designs, particularly for kitchens, bathrooms and gardens, as well her new online shop. Mel combines her passion for clay, ancient techniques, philosophy and poetry with her deep ethical and sustainable business ethos to create works of enduring beauty. Each and every tile is hand carved freehand into the wet clay, before being inlaid with coloured clay created from her own unique recipes. The full process from start to finish takes a minimum of two weeks for each piece, but due to this ancient craft, the colours and inspiring words will last eternally. As one of the only ceramicists in the UK still using this stunning 13th century technique,
Mel is not only keeping this old craft alive, but taking it to new frontiers! So, if you’re looking for something that is bespoke, unique, original and expresses just what you want from the heart, then let Alchemy Tiles create the magic you’re searching for.

LIFESTYLE
UNLOCK YOUR
RETIREMENT Three things you might not know about Equity Release, from the team at Harris Begley.
E This article is for general information only and does not constitute advice. The information is aimed at retail clients only. Equity Release will reduce the value of your estate and can affect your eligibility for means tested benefits.
ach year, older homeowners use Equity Release to help access millions of pounds to fund their retirement, and why not? As property prices have risen significantly and time spent in retirement gets longer, as you might expect, it’s becoming an increasingly popular option. The term usually refers to a Lifetime Mortgage, that is, a mortgage secured against your home to release funds which are typically paid back when you pass away or move into long-term care. If you think Equity Release could be for you, here are three important things you may not know about it, to help inform your decision. 1. You can make more than one withdrawal While it is possible to take a single lump sum using Equity Release, it isn’t the only option. Depending on your lifestyle and goals, it may make more sense to make several smaller withdrawals over a longer period. Known as a ‘Drawdown Lifetime Mortgage’, this can provide more flexibility and act as a cash reserve for unforeseen events, if needed. However, you must bear in mind that further withdrawals will reduce the equity you hold in your home and increase the level of interest owed on the loan. 2. You have the right to remain in your home Not wanting to move home is often a reason people consider Equity Release. It’s a product that can release funds without having to downsize, however, a common concern is that a lender would be able to force them to move out, but this is not the case when choosing a plan that meets the standards of the Equity Release Council. Borrowers have the right to remain in their home until the end of the loan. This is usually when you die or your property is sold to fund long-term care.
3. You don’t have to own your home You don't have to own your home outright to be eligible for Equity Release. If you’re still paying a mortgage, some of the money you draw down will be used to pay off the remaining debt, meaning the amount accessible to you will be lower. Usually, you can borrow up to 60% of the value you own, but lower restrictions may apply depending on the lender. In fact, you can use Equity Release to pay off mortgage debt you may have as you enter retirement. It's a step that can reduce outgoings at a time when your income may decrease. Before moving forward with Equity Release plans, you should assess your wider financial situation, as there may be other assets that can help you achieve your goals without the drawbacks of a Lifetime Mortgage. With that in mind it makes sense to contact Harris Begley to discuss your aspirations and the options available to you.

Industrial plastic and disused scaffolding netting aren’t usually the first materials you’d consider using in high-end, high-quality interiors.

ABOVE ì Jo at home in her studio RIGHT Sales and commissions continue to grow for Jo
et that’s exactly what textile designer Jo Hague from Lostwithiel uses to create her large-scale 3D sculptural art installations: “Walking on the beach one day, I found some geo-textile matting that’s normally used for preventing coastal erosion. As soon as I touched it, I knew I could do something with it once it had fulfilled its primary function that’s where my journey into repurposing industrial materials that would otherwise go into our oceans, landfill or incineration started.” Having spent 25 years as a health and social care trainer, Jo decided to follow the dream she’d had since a young adult and completed a three-year textile degree at Falmouth University. After graduating in 2019, she converted her garage at home into a studio, and started creating eco-textile pieces from disused plastic and other organic, ethically sourced materials. She was spotted almost immediately by an interior design shop in London for one of her intriguing installations, leading to an invitation to exhibit at Bedruthan Hotel earlier this year. “I was just at the point where I was ready to launch my business ’d invested a lot of time and money creating numerous pieces when the Covid-19 crisis hit. My exhibition was postponed indefinitely, and was left feeling really disheartened, as if my dream was being swept from under me.” Seeing an Outset Cornwall advert on Instagram prompted Jo to contact the team and join their online business start-up programme. “The Outset course has been incredibly useful. rom finance to finding your target market, packaging to setting up a returns policy, I’ve used so many of the ideas and suggestions already. The ‘Selling Online’ session was particularly useful in helping me get my full product range online and generating sales, even during lockdown.” Now having launched her business, Jo is positive about its future her work is on sale in London again, the Bedruthan Hotel is hanging two of her pieces until the exhibition can take place, and sales and commissions from her new online shop are continuing to grow.
DID YOU KNOW? Outset Cornwall is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, HM Government and The Outset Foundation.
“I believe these unprecedented times have made people really appreciate our natural world, how materials are sourced and the beauty of hand-crafted items. Outset gave me some fantastic ideas about how I could communicate my values and make my work more personal,” o explains, but not just that. “Having Outset’s support and time to work on the business side with them was fantastic it really lifted me and gave me back control of where my journey was going.”
