to the November issue of Cornwall Living!

T

his month our thoughts have turned to Cornwall’s unique food landscape – one that is occupied by some incredible food and drink businesses, and captained by a group of chefs who have put the county firmly on the foodie map. There has never been a better time to sample Cornwall’s larder, whether that’s buying the freshest ingredients from local suppliers to cook at home or treating yourself to a meal at one of the Duchy’s amazing restaurants. Turn to page 22 to discover some delectable dining experiences. Cornwall’s property market is currently very buoyant and demand for homes in the county is high. With that in mind, and if you’re looking for your dream home in the Duchy, we’ve handpicked a selection of stunning properties (from page 29) to ensure you are ahead of the game. For some, living in Cornwall is a yet unrealised dream, but that needn’t stop you from experiencing all of the wonderful things on offer and during the quieter winter months, you get to enjoy Cornwall without the crowds. Relax and recharge in one the county’s boutique hotels or gather in an exquisite coastal cottage – take your pick from page 55. And finally, it would be remiss of me not to mention the upcoming festive season. We’re already gearing up to make Christmas extra special this year and with that in mind, don’t forget to look out for the Cornwall Living Christmas Gift Guide, out now! ...happy reading!

In fact, up to 16 can now sit (in groups of up to six) to enjoy their choice from the store’s incredible offering. This is ideal because, with a collection of gins standing at nearly 180 strong – with spirits from both Cornwall and around the world – a trip to The Little Gin Shack is not one you’ll want to rush. Could you change a child’s life forever?

Dare to dream… A new nationwide campaign, #YouCanAdopt, is being supported by Cornwall Council to dispel myths around who is eligible to adopt and encourage more people to consider adoption. The number of adoptions in England has fallen by a third in four years but almost 3,000 children in England are still waiting to find their new family. n Cornwall, that equates to 22 Children currently waiting for forever families. Research shows that many adults have considered adoption but 43% of people in the south west admit they do not know if they are eligible to adopt and 32% think they wouldn’t be able to. The new campaign aims to increase the number of people ta ing the first steps towards adopting a child.

Councillor Sally Hawken, Cabinet Member for Children & Wellbeing, Cornwall Council said: “We know that lots of people think about adopting but wonder whether they might be eligible and so don’t take that allimportant first step. “Hopefully this new campaign will convince them to come and talk to us and dispel those myths. There are children locally and nationally from all backgrounds waiting for forever homes and that’s why we need people from all walks of life to come forward and help us to give them the love and care that every child needs to thrive, whatever their background.” For more information call 01872 322200 or visit www.cornwall.gov.uk/ adoption

We have a large choice of worktops and appliances too, to complement your new look.” So if your kitchen is feeling tired and in need of a new lease of life, why not give Dream Doors a call? Keeping people safe

through Coronavirus With their cleaning business continuously growing over the last few months, the Passmore Cleaning team has never been busier. “The pandemic has highlighted the value of trained, professional cleaners and what they contribute to daily workspaces,” says Communications Manager, Kate Passmore. The Passmore team has been advising businesses and clients on how to mitigate the risk of Coronavirus through touchpoint cleaning. Also, after recently purchasing specialist fogging cleaning machines, Kate continues: “We just really want this virus to clear off and are doing everything we can to help companies across Cornwall, which is why our new fogging services aren’t nearly as expensive as national rates!”

West Coast Architecture explodes onto the scene As West Coast Architecture approaches its two year anniversary this coming January, the number of projects the team is involved in continues to expand. “We’ve managed to keep ourselves busy during the lockdown,” explains Lead Architect, Antonio Sánchez, and it’s no wonder. “We approach each project as if it’s our own,” he continues, and this personal approach has become something of a selling point to his

Michelin-starred chef, Paul Ainsworth (paul-ainsworth.co.uk) cut his culinary teeth in some of London’s top restaurants, working under the expert tutelage of the ’s finest chefs. Alongside his agship restaurant Paul Ainsworth at No 6 and the more relaxed dining experience at Caffé Rojano, both in Padstow, Paul has recently taken over The Mariners public house in Rock. All focus on championing the best of local produce and creating dishes with seasonal ingredients. It was Paul’s move to Cornwall that taught him about seasonality, whether that be Cornwall’s freshest seafood, its lush larder of vegetables, or meat from local herds.

Talking of Padstow’s grand master, no round-up of Cornish chefs would be complete without ic tein rickstein. com . is approach to seafood coo ing has in uenced much and many within ornwall’s culinary circle. The eafood Restaurant opened its dining room 45 years ago and remains the agship restaurant in the group. Forays into French bistro dining at t etroc’s, caf culture at ic tein’s Café, pub fayre at The Cornish Arms and casual restaurants with takeaways have kept the ic tein stable current and vibrant. The tein family passion for fresh fish remains as true today as it was in 1975.

he town, river and surrounding countryside of Fowey are highly coveted among those hoping to buy a home in Cornwall, and for good reason. Fowey has provided the inspiration for a number of famed authors, most notably Daphne du Maurier. Today, it’s something of a paradise for sailors of all abilities, its eclectic mix of riverside pubs and restaurants offering sanctuary and a chance to refuel after a day spent on the calm waters of the estuary. It’s also popular among shoppers in search of something different to the high street brands of Truro, particularly art enthusiasts, with its collection of independent galleries. Merchants House sits in prime position to capitalise on all of this. Comprising

four residences currently used as lucrative holiday lets, with three parking spaces and two frape moorings, it includes a total of six bedrooms and sits on the waterfront in Fowey, making it an exceptionally rare opportunity. Although it is currently used as holiday lets, it does provide immense versatility and huge potential to a variety of purchasers. Whatever your reason for buying, whether you’re investing, purchasing a holiday home, or moving into your ‘forever’ home, Merchant House could well be a dream come true. Not only does it occupy a premier waterfront position, it somehow still feels exceptionally private. As you step inside it continues to impress, its contemporary interiors presented in superb decorative order. There are very few opportunities like this on the current Cornish market, so if you’d like to find out more and see erchants ouse in person, be sure to call Rohrs and Rowe to arrange a private viewing.

ith Christmas just around the corner, now is the time, traditionally, when many of us would be gearing up for the pre-Christmas rush – to get everything ready for those festive family visits. Of course, uncertainty surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic means many still don’t know what the yuletide season will bring; in fact, for a lot of us, it may well have already been decided to stay at home. But after so much time spent inside during the lockdown, and with the prospect of weathering the coming winter between those same four walls, updating your home – be that your bedroom, kitchen, living

or dining room – is an easy way to make all that extra time inside a pleasure, not a chore! Whether you’re envisaging family feasts around a gorgeous new dining table, or you're a couple looking to sink into a sumptuous sofa after placing another log on the woodburner, the common denominator is furniture, which Christie’s in Penryn has in spades. And right now, owner Pete Blell and his team are offering an up-to half-price sale, with huge savings on absolutely everything in store, just in time for the cold months ahead. The Christie’s range includes a stunning collection of corner sofas and chairs, an eclectic range of dining sets in a multitude of styles (be yours traditional or contemporary), as well as beds, mattresses and so much more. Of course, the problem nowadays is often that with so much choice, it can be hard knowing where to start. After all, a new piece of furniture is an investment, so getting it right first time is crucial With that in mind, we as Pete for his advice: “I know it sounds obvious, but first thing’s first try to measure up your room so you can work out exactly what will and won’t fit, remembering that furniture shouldn’t totally overpower a room. Next, consider what style you want to achieve, and when you have that in mind, it’s time to pay the showroom a visit. Come in and have a look around,” encourages Pete, “you’ll be amazed at what you find

Budget is also a top consideration for most of us; if you’re buying for the long term, it’s always advisable to invest in a quality piece. In fact, spending less on a product that you want to last – particularly a piece of furniture that’s going to be used day after day – almost always works out as a false economy. That doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune; what we mean is that the quality and longevity you’ll find in a piece that costs, sometimes, ust a little more, will always be worth the initial outlay. However if it’s a piece of furniture that’s providing a stop-gap – which at this time of year could be a futon, or extra dining chairs for festive guests – then Christie’s can also offer something that won’t break the bank. What we think really makes Christie’s a must-visit, however, is the variety of styles you’ll find in store. ornwall is home to so many different types of homes, from characterful cottages, townhouses and sprawling country estates, to modern new builds on the very fringes of the coast. This means that when you’ve decided to invest in new furniture, chances are you have a very specific style in mind, one that’s led by that of your home. Pete and his team take

pride in their ability to help you find the best furniture solutions for your home, but not just that they’re e perts in their field and pride themselves on providing first class customer service, too. Christie’s Furniture and The Christie’s Bed Shop remain open, seven days a week, with an increased schedule of safety measures in place to ensure your experience is as safe and enjoyable as possible. This includes specialist cleaning equipment to ensure you can still 'try before you buy', including a sanitised pillow for your personal use when testing out the comfort of any mattress. There’s also an appointment service for those who wish to seek advice and purchase furniture as quickly and e ciently as possible, ideal for those who still have a long to-do list to tick off in time for Christmas! In short, if you’re looking to update your home furnishings, be sure to get in touch and arrange your visit to Christie’s.

A SAFE WAY

to save

As we all gear up for the upcoming Black Friday sale, with Christmas just around the corner, we take a look at what’s in store at HBH Woolacotts.

B

lack Friday and Christmas are traditionally the busiest periods in the electricals and technology industry, and this year is set to be no exception. Love it or hate it, Black Friday is here to stay, and it is still seen as the biggest promotional event of the year, with prices at their very lowest. We catch up with local electrical retailer, HBH Woolacotts, to give you the lowdown on industry trends and, most importantly, what’s going to be hot in the world of electricals this year, so that you can treat yourself just in time for Christmas.

Supersize your TV! There is an ever-growing trend for larger screen TVs, explains HBH Woolacotts Director, Chris Hemmerle, and this is due to a number of factors: “It’s partly down to the fact that bezels and frames are reducing in size and allowing for bigger screens, but also because Smart TVs and connectivity features mean that TVs are quite often one of the centrepieces of the modern home.” From a technological point of view, the improved resolution and screens mean that the quality is still fantastic; from a price perspective, says Chris: “We’re seeing these TVs at the lowest prices ever. He points us to the 70-inch LG 70UN71006 4K Smart LED TV – which he predicts will be priced around £700 for Black Friday and Christmas – as well as the Sony KD77AG9: a 77-inch Master Series OLED TV, which he reveals will be reduced to less than £3,500.

With a Black Friday price of less than £140, it’s the perfect way to start – or expand – your sound system. There’s also a range of options for those who prefer something a little more niche. Ruark Audio, for instance, have launched the R3 Integrated Music System (set to be price-dropped to around £600!), adding to the Ruark staple of products renowned for their craftsmanship, sound quality, and modern standard of connectivity.

Get creative in the kitchen With great music comes great cooking, and who doesn’t love bobbing along to tunes in the background as they rustle up a feast? For those thinking about investing in their kitchen and honing their cookery skills, there’s never been a better time, with recent changes to our lifestyles only adding to the nation’s culinary prowess. “This is a trend that we were already seeing,” says Chris, “with a move towards healthy eating and people spending more time at home and in the kitchen preparing great food.” HBH Woolacotts boasts a huge variety of small kitchen appliances and gadgets to help make cooking easier, at the same time bringing a touch of style to the heart of your home. From kettles and toasters to stand mixers and soup makers, from brands that include Kenwood, KitchenAid, Morphy Richards and more, you can really bring your kitchen to life. The KitchenAid Liquid Graphite Artisan Stand Mixer, for instance, is set to drop to just £350 for Black Friday and

Christmas, while the Morphy Richards 1.6L SoupMaker is set to cost just £49.99 – ideal for those winter warming bowls of goodness that we Brits love so dearly! These are but a few of the heady discounts HBH Woolacotts is set to introduce in time for Black Friday and Christmas. But that’s not the only reason to shop there. As Chris explains: “We have adapted to the recent trading conditions to ensure all customers can shop safely and in a way that suits them. What’s more, we appreciate that many people are still reluctant to venture out, which is why we’re offering the exact same prices, promotions, advice and support, regardless of whether customers shop in store, online, or over the phone. We also now offer a completely free delivery service on all products across Devon and Cornwall!” So if you’re thinking of upgrading your lifestyle at home, you can rest assured you’ll be shopping safely at one of nine HBH Woolacotts stores across Devon and Cornwall.

WINTER-PROOF

YOUR HOME

With all the extra time we’re spending at home and winter just around the corner, many of us are looking to make our sanctuaries as cosy as possible. ABOVE Being cost and energy-efficient needn't mean spoiling your home's aesthetic 

A

s many will well know, this can be an uphill battle, especially with old, draughty windows and doors to contend with. Replacement doors and windows will not only improve the aesthetic of your home but also the energy e ciency, meaning a warmer home with less money wasted on heating through the winter and, significantly, a lower environmental impact. Indeed, many of us are becoming more aware of our carbon footprints and one of the first places we can loo to ma e improvements is in our homes. You need only look at thermally imaged comparisons of single and double glazing to see that single gla ing is significantly less e cient, responsible for far more extensive heat loss than their double glazed counterparts. Double glazing doesn’t have to be characterless. Many customers with period properties wish to retain their traditional style, for instance, with Victorian sash windows. This can be achieved in several ways. Timber hardwood double glazed windows can be made to be a faithful reproduction of old Victorian sash windows but with the benefits of modern glass technology. Alternatively, uPVC sash windows retain much of the character of traditional timber windows without the maintenance.

With the added benefit of being able to paint both timber and uPVC in any colour, your windows can really make a statement. If it’s the clean pared back lines of a more modern aesthetic you’re after, then aluminium with its thin sight lines might be the best choice, although a dark painted or foiled uPVC can achieve a similar look on a more cost-friendly basis. Whether you choose timber, uPVC or aluminium, Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories Ltd can be on hand to help with your project. This local, family run firm has been manufacturing windows, doors and conservatories in Cornwall for over 35 years. With a passion for good design, the team has a reputation for innovative, quality installations with a genuine after care service. So, if you’re looking to make your home your sanctuary this winter, stop by the showroom in Pool for a look around and a chat with one of the Philip Whear designers.

DISCOVER MORE Top 5 reasons for choosing Philip Whear 1. Green your home with noticeably improved heat retention, plus savings on bills 2. IN SAFE HANDS Fighting germs with fragrance – we experience the sweet smell of safety with ThermoGel.

G

ood hand hygiene has always been considered one of the best ways to stop the spread of germs, and never more so than in recent months. Battling the spread of Covid-19 relies heavily on hand washing, but what if you are out and about and don’t have instant access to soap and running water? An alcohol based hand gel is the next best thing, and provided it contains in excess of 60% of the good stuff it can be very effective against germs. ow that summer’s over and the cold and u season is ust around the corner, having a high-quality sanitiser to hand couldn’t be more important.

LIFESTYLE

ç MAIN Good hand hygiene is now more important than ever

ê BELOW A range tailored to differing needs, from home to business use

So what is the science behind the sanitiser? The alcohol (sometimes referred to as ethanol) attacks viruses and other diseasecausing pathogens by damaging their cell structures. The Coronavirus is an enveloped virus surrounded by a fat layer. Such lipid membrane viruses — like the Coronavirus — can be killed using alcohol-based disinfectants and hand sanitiser as they break down the membrane or the layer of fat, leaving the virus unable to infect an individual. However, if some sanitisers cause the skin on your hands to become dry (this is the effect of the alcohol) and the strong clinical smell is off-putting, then ThermoGel’s new Luxury Range of hand sanitisers are here to save the day. At a time where our day-to-day experiences have changed dramatically, with many of us working from home, what could be nicer than the sweet smell of essential oils on your hands as you type? Not only do these oils nourish your skin, they also have an aromatherapy effect. So whether it’s a calming combination of lavender and tea tree or the uplifting aroma of grapefruit and eucalyptus, there is a fragrance for every mood. The handy sized bottles are perfect for keeping on your desk or slipping into your bag for an out-and-about squirt of sweet smelling safety. ThermoGel, created by the Bodmin-based supplier of hand sanitiser and surface disinfection chemicals, is available in these small, single units as well as larger bulk quantities. All products contain 70% alcohol that kills 99.99% of germs, so your hands will remain safe and soft at the same time. The Luxury Range contains the highest quality, 100% essential oils, all with the added benefit of no added chemicals or ingredients. ThermoGel hand sanitiser is available in gel or liquid form and has undergone UK testing to standard EN1500, which is an essential

trust mark when purchasing hand sanitiser. Their fast dispatch and delivery through trusted couriers, means that once you place your order, it will be with you in a matter of days. Keeping the environment in mind, and working to reduce plastic waste, ThermoGel’s hand sanitiser is available in a bulk 25-litre drum. This can then be decanted into smaller containers, also availed from ThermoGel, and distributed as needed. A great way to stop that build-up of single-use empty bottles and to help reduce your overall plastic waste. Then there’s ThermoGel’s newly-developed a range of free-standing, table- and wallmounted dispenser units, offering a robust and durable solution for businesses looking to supply their staff and customers with Sanitisation Stations. Capable of holding up to five litres of hand sanitiser, the Thermo el SaniTower removes the stress and constant management of your hand sanitisation provision, providing you instead with a touchfree, tidy, and low maintenance method of hand washing. Part of the ThermoProtect Group, ThermoGel now sits proudly in the stable of companies that include ThermoFoam, which supplies spray foams for residential, construction, agricultural and commercial pro ects throughout the , and ThermoHome, the home insulation division that covers roof, loft, under oor and cavity wall insulation. A great example of an agile company diversifying in trying times.

FOODIE

AND TUCK IN The Lemon Arms at Mylor Bridge has garnered something of a reputation as a must-visit for anyone in search of hearty, seasonal Cornish cuisine.

I

t’s true: the Lemon Arms is the perfect pitstop whatever the time of year, but as the temperatures of autumn begin to drop and we anticipate the onset of winter, nothing quite comes close to the idea of sitting ne t to a roaring fire, glass of your chosen Cornish tipple to hand, and perusing a menu built almost wholly of Cornish produce. Of course, as is the case for many Cornish businesses, the Lemon Arms has had to roll with the punches thrown by the Coronavirus pandemic, and you need only visit the website and peruse the mouth-watering takeaway menu to see that the team is dedicated to delivering its customers’ favourites, even if they aren’t all able to make it to the pub. At the helm of this stellar Cornish establishment are Johnny and Sam Pearce who, between them, boast more than two decades’ experience running Cornish pubs and restaurants. So it’s no surprise to see a reel of Cornish companies on the Lemon Arms list of suppliers; meat comes from Mylor Butchers, Brian Etherington and RJ Trevarthen, whilst seafood is delivered by Seabourne Fish, Matthew Stevens, South Coast Fisheries and Rodney Corke Crab. Add to these an abundance of fruit and veg from WestCountry, dairy from Roddas, wine from Walter Hicks, and of course beer from St Austell Brewery, and, well… you get the picture!

Differing slightly to the in house menu, the takeaway offering nevertheless features some of our favourite pub classics, interspersed with some true avours of ornwall. omemade mackerel paté with crusty bread, for instance, makes for a tempting starter, whilst the choice of main courses is absolutely loaded with Cornish goodies, including a number of vegetarian dishes capitalising on the Duchy’s natural larder. There’s also a choice of sandwiches and jacket potatoes, plus a tempting selection of desserts to help ‘cleanse the palate’. In short, whether you’re eating in, or are in the area and wish to enjoy the Lemon Arms menu from the comfort of your own home or holiday let, we highly recommend heading to the website and checking out the menu for yourself. Washed down with a pint of St Austell beer, or a glass of Cornish wine, it really does take some beating.

CHRISTMAS CHEER A hamper of locally made gins and rums makes for the perfect gift this Christmas!

T

his year’s Christmas may be one that is celebrated differently across the globe, and because of that, how we celebrate and who we celebrate with is at the front of our minds, maybe more than ever. Still, one thing that won’t change is who we’ll be buying gifts for, and which gifts we’ll choose to buy them, because gifts can often say just as much about the person giving them as they do about the recipient. One gift that makes perfect sense this Christmas season, and will always be sure to warm the bellies and spirits of the person receiving it, is a hamper of one-of-a-kind gins and rums from Cornish Rock Gin. Gin and champagne are gifts that are not only perfect for the time, but are a welcome addition to any day or occasion throughout the year – and a continuous, happy reminder of the person who gifted it. Cornish Rock Gin has a wide variety of avours to choose from, but this year’s hampers give the buyer, and the lucky recipient, the chance to try many of the avours the team of distillers have created in

their local Cornish base of operations. There are 13 hamper options in total; from an ‘All Gin’ hamper containing all six of the avours they offer lassic, in oc Gin, Cornish Gold, Blue Angel, Orange Sunset, and Cherry Kiss – to a choice of three ‘Gin & i ’ hampers. ach comes with one avour of Rock Gin paired with a bottle of champagne to go alongside. Christmas this year may have to be celebrated differently, but that doesn’t mean the festive nature has to change. Whether you’ll be there in person to celebrate with family and a few friends, or sending a hamper in your stead, choosing a locally made gin and rum hamper with all, or a specially selected avour of gin and champagne of your choice, can be a great and unique way to inject some personality into this year’s festivities.

PUT PUPS

FIRST

With losses of £700,000 due to Coronavirus, The Cornish Seal Sanctuary now, more than ever, needs your help.

T

he Cornish Seal Sanctuary has been an animal rescue facility for more than 60 years, helping seal pups in need from around the coastline. As the only seal sanctuary in Cornwall, pups rely on the team there to help support them through di cult winters. eal pups can find themselves in di culty due to issues such as malnourishment due to separation from mum, wounds caused by marine litter or storms and disturbance from human activity, leaving them unable to fend for themselves in the wild. This is where the Cornish Seal Sanctuary comes in. The team rescue seal pups who need support during these di cult times. With decades of e perience, they are able to give them the care they need, administering lifesaving medication or facilitating vital surgery and helping them to learn how to fend for themselves before they can be released bac to the wild. As well as its wor rescuing vulnerable seal pups, the ornish eal anctuary provides a permanent home to those who cannot be released bac to the wild due to medical issues. Most pups are successfully released, but on occasions, a few require ongoing care and medication for the rest of their lives and their site in wee is specially designed

to ensure those animals can live a happy, comfortable life. The ut ups irst’ campaign is all about supporting seal pups, providing advice and vital information to the public and helping the Cornish Seal Sanctuary to continue its wor , however after a very di cult year, they need your help. ue to oronavirus, the team have been struggling with the ever growing costs and with the pup season now in full swing, they are as ing for your help to get them bac on trac to be able to continue their wor . n the three month long loc down from arch to June and now operating with limited capacity due to social distancing, they have seen losses of , much needed funding to get them through another busy pup season. A donation of any size would go such a long way, and help to protect the animals at The Cornish Seal Sanctuary that has been a huge part of Cornwall's heritage and an important animal rescue facility for over years.

GO WILD! Four good reasons why you should pay Newquay Zoo a visit this autumn.

Red pandas

N

ewquay Zoo is a superb day out for all ages, whatever the time of year. It’s home to an incredibly diverse array of creatures great and small, offering visitors a real insight into the animal kingdom, and opening little ones’ eyes to the importance of protecting the natural world.

Currently all guests, including Annual Pass holders, must pre-book an entry date and time, in advance of their visit. Whilst Newquay Zoo has worked hard to ensure that it is a safe place to visit, please note that some parts may be closed for your safety. To see all current safety measures, visit the website.

Discover the world’s rarest species Located on the north Cornish coast, the zoo is a visitor attraction and conservation charity, one that allows you to get up close to many wonderful endangered species, including lions, lynx, lemurs, otters, red pandas, penguins and many more. Embrace the outdoors The autumn season is a beautiful time to get outdoors with the family and admire this stunning 13-acre zoo and the lush gardens within it. This is all while learning about the dozens of exotic animals, many of which are more active during the colder months. Children can also run wild in the two outdoor play areas!

Try and spot the zoo babies This year has seen something of a baby boom at Newquay Zoo! Throughout 2020, it has welcomed a tapir calf, red panda cub, Owston’s civet kitten, pademelon joey, crowned lemur infant, black necked swan cygnets, and twin armadillos! Many of these youngsters are now out and about and growing in confidence, bringing e tra oy to your zoo visit. Relax and recharge Finally, after a day spent out in the elements, you can refuel at the Café Lemur or the Lazy Lion Grill outlet, both serving takeaway food and drink – ideal for grabbing a spot of lunch, delicious cake or a hot drink.

splendour SEASONAL

The Jewellery Workshop, Porthleven, continues to keep shelves stocked with stunning seasonal jewellery, much of which is made in-store!

I

t only takes a quick scroll through the Porthleven Jewellery Workshop Facebook page to see that this harbourside boutique is a one-stop shop for anybody hoping to accessorise in style this autumn. The team is able to make in-house repairs in their very own on-site workshop, as well as offering strap and battery replacements for watches, a wide range of pearl and diamond jewellery (including wedding and engagement rings , alongside fine wristwatches and so much more. In fact, much of the jewellery on offer is made right there in the shop! In time for autumn, owners Paul and Clair are delighted to have recently taken stock of a huge collection of gorgeous Baltic amber. The perfect complement to the autumnal weather that has now well and truly replaced the balmy heights of summer, these amber pieces are typical of the wares that can be found here all year round. Alternatively, perhaps you’re in the market for something a little more bespoke? If so, The Jewellery Workshop has been specialising in unique, personalised items since the store’s inception in 2012, and it’s garnered a sterling reputation for secondto-none customer service and reasonable prices. Indeed, whether it’s a brand new item you’re planning to have made, or an old family heirloom that you’re hoping to have remodelled and thus treasured by the next few generations, Paul, Clair and their team

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Offering a unique alternative to the high street, Wadebridge’s Whitegoose & Co is a sanctuary of all things pretty. ABOVE A charming lifestyle boutique 

N

ow in its fifth year of trading in Wadebridge, Whitegoose (&Co) has gone from strength to strength with a loyal following of lovely ladies (and the occasional gentleman!). Maggie, who owns Whitegoose, says “it should really be the Little Whitegoose” as it is the smallest shop she’s ever had. “But it is just the best! I intended to open a ‘Little White Shop’ based on my previous shops ‘The Romantic Englishwoman’, however after putting a rail of clothing in the shop, it just took off, becoming the ‘Goose’ it is today. I have the most wonderful team who love the clothes, jewellery and accessories and love our customers, who return time and time again.” After moving to Menorca in 2000, explains Maggie: “I opened a boutique in Mahon, the capital. Selling to a very cosmopolitan audience was a very different experience and I did my stock buying in Barcelona and Madrid, which was very exciting and improved my Spanish no end! However, having moved back to Cornwall in 2008 I quickly realised

that I had to have another shop, it’s just in the blood. It was the best decision I ever made. Wadebridge is a wonderful town, still having a great variety of individual shops and businesses, a place where people now they’ll find something a little different to the larger high streets.” Open Monday to Saturday, the Whitegoose opening hours are 10.30am to 3.30pm. A sanctuary of all things pretty, it provides discerning fashionistas the chance to peruse a range that’s colourful, comfortable, and as Maggie says, just a little bit different to the usual high street offering. Being Maggie’s 13th shop in the West Country, combined with her background in architecture and interiors, Maggie’s keen eye for detail is apparent throughout both the store and the ranges within. As Maggie puts it: “Come and pay us a visit – you won’t be disappointed.”

WITH THE TIMES

This year has certainly been a challenge for the team at Atishoo Gallery and Picture Framers, but it’s also been an opportunity to stop and take stock.

A

fter the initial shock of being told to close the physical shop, explains Atishoo Gallery owner, Liz Hackney, “we quickly realised that this was the perfect time to expand our online offering. Although we’ve had a website for 20 years and an online shop for the past 10, not everything we sold was online. There just hadn’t been the time to photograph and upload the vast amount of art and crafts we had on display in the past. Now, almost everything that you see in our gallery is available online too, with options for national or local delivery, as well as local pick up for those customers who would rather not visit the shop in person during these strange times.” Not only did this help to maintain a small income during the three months Atishoo Gallery was closed, Liz reveals, “it also put us in a great place for the run up to Christmas, where our shopping habits will no doubt be very different this year!” Liz and co. also took the lockdown as a chance to change the way they offer their bespoke picture framing service: “As part of our Covid-19 secure risk assessment, we felt that moving to an appointments system would help with keeping staff and customers safe in the shop. It’s actually worked really

well and is something we will carry on even after the pandemic is over. Each customer is given a 30-minute or 60-minute consultation appointment, depending on how many pieces of work they want to frame. Customer feedback has been really positive, as they know there isn’t another customer hovering behind them waiting in the queue, and that they have the time to make decisions on their framing choices.” The gallery and shop is open from Tuesday to Saturday, but be sure to check the website for the most up-to-date opening times. If you’d like to request an appointment for framing, either give the gallery a call or drop the team an email. Finally, in the run up to Christmas, it’s well worth noting that Atishoo Gallery does get very busy with framing, so in order to avoid disappointment, we highly recommend booking early!

THE VALUE OF TIME Cornwall Hospice Care reflects on the importance of having time to get to know patients and their families.

ABOVE Ward Sisters Lou and Sally 

BELOW At Cornwall Hospice Care, everybody plays a vital role

“Everyone plays a vital part in getting it right for our patients,” Sally continues. “Our volunteers often get chatting with patients and their families when serving meals or delivering owers. The chefs sit with patients and try to find ways of enticing them to eat. The house eepers are often in patients’ rooms for longer periods of time and they too get in to conversation. Between us all we build up a picture so we can care for the individual and appreciate the little things that can make their stay very special.” Lou Ranford says the individualised approach also helps break down the myths about hospice care: “With time and our team approach we can help change people’s minds about hospices, showing them they’re open, airy, happy places. Once here we see people relax, feel at ease and comfortable and there’s nothing better than that feeling of having successfully addressed someone’s concerns.”

CORNWALL HOSPICE CARE

"

T

ime was the theme for Cornwall Hospice Care when the Cornish charity marked national Hospice Care Week. Under the title of ‘We have the time to ’, the charity’s two Ward isters re ected on having time to get to know their patients and their families. Lou Ranford is the Ward Sister at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle: “It’s about having time to spend with the patients so we can really get to know them. We look at how we manage a patient’s symptoms and how we can support their family, so we can help them achieve their end goal, whether that be going home or having quality time in the hospice.” Sally Davies, Ward Sister at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell, adds: “A relative once said to me that they believe impressions are made within the first ten minutes of meeting people and arriving at a new place. It means you’ve got a very short time to make a good impression. It’s vital that we put the patient first so they know they’re important and that we’ve got as much time as they need. It’s about recognising when someone needs help to settle, finding them a peace. t’s also about giving the family the time to hand the care over to us, so they can return to being a husband, wife, parent, child.”

Everyone plays a vital part in getting it right for our patients. SALLY DAVIES

hether you live in Cornwall, or regularly holiday in the county, it is very likely you will have spotted the Cornwall Air Ambulance ying overhead on a mission. The charity’s new red and yellow helicopter is unmistakable and often turns up in unexpected places, even on occasion in someone’s back garden. You might have seen it land on the beach, on moorland or at the roadside, but what you don’t see is what happens ne t. ach year the helicopter ies on over 750 missions across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The critical care paramedics on board the air ambulance are tasked to the most seriously sick and injured patients in the county. So, when the helicopter lands on scene, that is just the start of the story.

In order to give the public an insight into the lifesaving service their donations provide, Cornwall Air Ambulance opened its doors to a film crew for a special documentary series. The 10-part show Cornwall Air 999 follows the charity’s critical care paramedics and pilots as they attend emergencies over the busy summer months. The series for digital TV channel, Really, focuses on real-life rescue situations, the patients helped by the aircrew and the effect Covid-19 has had on the service. “Lots of people see the helicopter out and about in the summer, but what they might not be aware of is that we are a charity,” says Air perations cer, teve arvey. “Cornwall Air Ambulance relies on public donations to y these missions and reach people in their moment of need. So, as a charity it is important to raise awareness about the types of incidents we attend, and how vital

the service is here in Cornwall. But it is equally special for our supporters to be able to see first hand the service they are funding and the difference they make to people’s lives.” When the red phone rings at the charity’s airbase near Newquay, no one knows what or where the next emergency will be. Capturing film footage of real life rescues, often in very challenging situations, was the task for Wadebridge-based Beagle Media. A camera operator followed the crew on daily shifts over the summer, travelling to scene in the helicopter alongside the aircrew. Along with this, cameras were fitted into the helicopter and paramedics wore bodycams to capture different types of footage on scene. For Steve, being in front of the camera is no new experience. In over 10 years with Cornwall Air Ambulance, he has previously featured on television shows about his work as part of the aircrew, which includes leading a team of 10 paramedics. “It becomes second nature wearing the cameras and you do forget they are there; on scene our focus is solely on helping our patient,” says Steve. “I think viewers will enjoy seeing some of the environments we land in, the novel ways in which we sometimes have to reach a patient and how we work together as a team to provide the best possible care. We are also in the fortunate position of enjoying the views of Cornwall from the air every day, so it’s nice to be able to share that too.” The series follows the aircrew from the moors of west Penwith, to the beaches of the north Coast and even over the border into Devon, covering emergencies such as road tra c collisions, serious falls and agricultural incidents. Paula Martin, Chief Executive of Cornwall Air Ambulance, says: “What our critical care team do is amazing; they are there for people in their absolute moment of need, providing lifesaving emergency care. This year they have had an even greater challenge than normal responding to incidents during the Covid-19 pandemic. We are delighted that viewers across the country will be able to see this first hand, to understand the difference Cornwall Air Ambulance makes to families and how important it is to support the charity. It’s going to be a very exciting watch.” Cornwall Air 999 starts on Discovery’s Freeview digital TV channel Really on Tuesday 3rd November, 9pm.

ornwall Hospice Care’s annual ‘Light Up A Life’ event is about remembering those who have died, celebrating their lives and taking time to re ect on happy memories. This year the charity has had to change its plans as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Light Up A Life event will be held virtually. ilmed at Truro athedral, this magnificent building will be lit up with candles representing all the lives being remembered across ornwall. t’s an opportunity to oin together virtually to grieve and to celebrate the lives of our lost loved ones, says fundraiser, li oare. There’ll be readings, messages of support, songs and dedications to those who have passed away. The virtual event will be broadcast in early ecember and people can ma e their dedications in remembrance of their loved ones throughout ovember. There’s a special page on our website where you can tell us about the person or people you want to remember and make a donation in their honour, continues li. All the money we

raise this year will be going to Terry’s ed Appeal, which aims to raise £250,000 to keep a bed at each of our two hospices open for the next six months while we cope with the restrictions the pandemic has placed on us. Terry was cared for at ount dgcumbe Hospice in St Austell during lockdown and during this time he talked about what had happened to him and what being cared for at the hospice meant to him. When he new the very bed he was in was at ris of closing he wanted to help and wrote a letter in which he said When needed it, when was feeling frightened and disturbed, this beautiful place had a bed for me and it felt li e a gift. ’d be devastated if my bed closed. adly, Terry died, but his legacy is an appeal that will help Cornwall Hospice Care to continue offering support to terminally ill patients and their families.
