hey say that an “Englishman’s home is his castle” and never has that been truer than in the past year. Our homes have become our places of work and our schools; our nights out and our days in. Our dining tables have been our restaurants and our gardens our gyms. With that in mind, in this issue of Cornwall Living we take a look at some of the incredible properties that are available to buy in Cornwall at the moment and hear from some of the county’s leading estate agents on the current state of the property market. Whether you are looking to upsize, downsize or relocate, the Duchy has some incredible homes from modern, new builds to more traditional Cornish properties; discover more from page 16. If you are already on the property ladder but are looking to welcome in 2021 with exciting news of tying the knot, then our wedding section (from page 62) has plenty of inspiration. We may still be living under restrictions, but that doesn’t stop you from planning for your big day! As we look to warmer days, and hopefully reduced travel restrictions, there’s nothing better than having a holiday to look forward to. From page 41, you’ll find a host of staycation inspiration for when the time is right to have your dream holiday in Cornwall.

Food lifeline warms hearts

during Covid-19 pandemic

Poignant sculpture supports hospices Amongst the uncertainty and challenges 2020 and 2021 has thrown at us all, we’ve seen communities come together like never before. With that in mind, the team at Bluebird Care have been working on something rather special. They recently joined forces with the Chaos Group (CHAOS stands for Community Helping All Of Society) and Positive People Cornwall in delivering food to people in the local area. Food Insecurity has affected a record number of people this year and working with other organisations meant Bluebird Care was able to package up and distribute more food quickly. Food was donated by local farmers and large supermarket chains, meaning boxes were packed with bread, fruit, sweet treats, vegetables, bottled water and bunches of owers.

people that they are not alone. Bluebird also teamed up with CAHSC Cornwall and FeesFood to deliver Christmas meals on Christmas Eve to care homes and care workers so they had something delicious to eat on Christmas Day. The meals were made using fresh local produce and also came with dessert and vegetarian options.

Next it was time to deliver to customers, key workers and people isolating to help put a smile on their face and remind

“People we delivered to were overjoyed and so thankful,” says Bluebird Care Manager, Caroline. “It really did warm all our hearts. It has been amazing to see such kindness during these di cult times and when we pull together, we really can make a difference.” Sometimes it’s the smallest things that mean the most. If you’d like to join the Bluebird team for more adventures in 2021, be sure to get in touch!

A bust of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore by West Cornwall sculptor Penny Lally, will be at the centre of an exciting online auction being held by Cornwall Hospice Care in March. A number of artists have donated items to the Cornish healthcare charity, including Ken Howard OBE RA who’s given a stunning oil on canvas of St Michael’s Mount. “We’ve been humbled by the number of items donated to the auction,” says fundraiser Julie Treneer. “With our shops closed and fundraising activities curtailed, this is a golden opportunity to bring in funds to help keep our two hospices open, both of which have continued admitting patients 24/7 throughout the pandemic. We know the bust of Captain Sir Tom will be popular and what a suitable piece given the extraordinary fundraising he did for our colleagues in the NHS.” The auction will run from 14th to 21st March, and you can discover more online. Does your home have al fresco appeal?

Is this the year for a new kitchen? If one of your New Year resolutions is to replace that tired old kitchen, then why not let Dream Doors Truro take the stress off your hands? With hundreds of styles and colours to choose from, along with a whole range of worktops, from laminate to Corian, whatever your chosen style, Dream Doors can help bring your dream kitchen to life. Director Matt Jones and the team aim to deliver a bespoke, hassle-free experience when it comes to rejuvenating your kitchen, and the best part, Matt explains, is that “we can work with your existing carcasses to create the kitchen you’ve always wished for.”

Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems know a thing or two when it comes to helping clients capitalise on their outside space, and the solutions they offer are the sort you’re unlikely to find pre-made in a box. Each project is bespoke – tailored to each customer’s individual requirements – and as a case in point we need only look at one of the team’s recent projects. The pictured example shows a recently constructed balustrade system installed for one very happy Cornish client. Using stainless steel posts with a gorgeous hardwood handrail, plus wire and frameless glass in-fills, the system gives the client the perfect ‘zoned’ space in which to enjoy sunny afternoons al fresco, without impeding the view of their garden. In fact, where other systems might detract from the natural beauty of this particular home’s exterior, this one actually enhances it. If you’ve been scratching your head wondering how you might capitalise on your home’s outdoor space, then be sure to contact the Kestrel team to see how they can help. Not only does this reduce on costs, it also significantly cuts down the lead time for your new kitchen. In fact, Matt tells us: “Using our team of local craftsmen, we can

Dreaming of a stay in St Ives? At Blue Sky Holiday Homes, the team knows that time is precious, which is why they take the time to find out exactly what their guests want before ensuring it’s all taken care of. And as guests’ expectations continue to rise by the year, their main aim is to stay ahead of the trends, working with owners to ensure their properties cater for all their guests’ needs. Located in St Ives, the Blue Sky Holiday Homes o ce offers a warm welcome, just behind the waterfront on St Andrews Street. It lies just ten minutes from all of its properties, meaning the team is always close and on hand, ready to help you make the most of your stay. If you’re hoping to enjoy the beauty of Cornwall, surrounded by friends, family, fine food and stunning vistas, when it

comes to Cornish holiday lettings, the Blue Sky team can take care of the details, so that you can simply relax and enjoy your stay. For more information call 01736 798032 or visit www.blueskyholidayhomes.com

Bringing the past back to life

Wave goodbye to 2020 and say ‘hello’ to a brand-new year of hope, promise and sunshine. This is the message from Whitegoose in Wadebridge, where an eclectic collection of vibrant, colourful clothing, at amazingly affordable prices, is waiting to be discovered. “We have been busy sourcing some fabulous clothing, cushions, bedcovers and table lamps,” says Whitegoose owner, Maggie, “plus delicious new French soaps, diffusers, candles, soft-leather and suede bags, stunning new jewellery and more!

Cornwall is not without its share of heritage buildings, each requiring constant upkeep and maintenance, and in some cases, restoration. After all, keeping these historic, often iconic buildings, in prime condition is paramount to ensuring they last for future generations to enjoy and be reminded of Cornwall’s rich history. One company that specialises in the restoration of original ooring is Cornwall Floor Care. fine example of this company’s work can be found at the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro, where founder Mike Dennick and his team lovingly restored the building’s original wooden ooring with a dust-free and solvent-free solution.

‘Bring on the spring!’ says Whitegoose

Experts at what they do, when it comes to restoring original oors and bringing the past back to life, Mike and co. at Cornwall Floor Care come highly recommended! For more information call 07922 989131 or visit www.cornwallfloorcare.co.uk

“We may only be a tiny shop,” continues Maggie, “but we pack a very pretty punch in these challenging times. I have a wonderful following of gorgeous ladies who appreciate my style, who want something a little different, but don’t want to pay a fortune for wearing something different and looking exclusive.” If this sounds like you, then why not pay Maggie and the Whitegoose team a visit? Can’t wait to escape?

Looking for the next challenge? If you’ve yet to embark on the career you’ve always dreamed of because of time commitments elsewhere, now couldn’t be a better time to put that change into focus. Students that have gained a university level qualification from Truro and Penwith College have gone on to launch their own businesses, helping Cornwall become a healthier place, teaching the next generation of Cornish children and starting careers within the growing health and e:health sectors, among many others. One example is Hannah Bradwell (pictured), who completed her BA (Hons) Human Behavioural Studies at the college and is now using psychology and advanced robotic technology to create interactive pets that are bringing comfort to dementia sufferers around the country. Hannah’s research is being read worldwide. Applications for September 2021 are now being taken for over 30 career-focussed university level courses that span over 11 different subject areas at the TEF Gold-rated Truro and Penwith College. If you’re ready for the next challenge or want to boost your career prospects while staying in the place you love, you can find out more on the college website. round this time each year, here at Cornwall Living we aim to take an in-depth look at the property market. Of course, this is because as a New ear dawns, many find themselves setting resolutions to make the most of their leisure time. Be that couples, growing families, or those who are soon to retire, one destination in the UK that is near, if not at the top of the list of the most desirable places to live, is by the sea in Cornwall. Our county has so much to offer. dventurers can lace up their boots and strike out along the South est Coast Path, or explore the undulating countryside that rolls between coasts. ater sports enthusiasts could not be in a better place to make the most of their hobbies, and for young families, where better to bring up a child than in Cornwall, where you’re never more than a short drive from a bucket and spade day on the beach. That’s not to mention the food on offer here, made famous around the world thanks to Cornwall’s unique natural larder, from seafood landed daily by local boats, to home grown and seasonal veg, and organically reared meats. eally, there’s no place like Cornwall.

This year, however, the ongoing pandemic has put paid to the plans of many who might otherwise have been beginning their search for their dream home in the uchy. othing is currently more important than ensuring the safety of ourselves and those around us by adhering to the latest government guidance, and so unfortunately, at least in the short term, the active pursuit of the Cornish dream, for many, remains on pause. However, that’s no reason not to stay abreast of what’s happening and what’s available in the Cornish property market, and as with all things related to this beautiful county, we are here to help! Here in Cornwall there is a whole spectrum of different properties to choose from. Character filled cottages in the countryside appeal to some, whilst modern homes on the fringes of the ocean suit others. For others still, contemporary and well-equipped new builds tend to tick the boxes, and two fine examples have just come on the market with The ather Partnership (thematherpartnership.co.uk), based in Helston. Located just a few minutes’ drive from Helston town centre, these stunning new build homes at Polwidden iew each offer a growing family four bedrooms of spacious accommodation. Finished inside and out to exceptionally high specifications, and inclusive of open-plan kitchen and dining rooms, log burners and gorgeous master bedroom suites,

plus covered parking bays and beautiful, low-maintenance rear gardens, for anybody searching for a new home that’s ready to be moved straight into, and Polwidden need seeing to be believed. Other examples can be found from the developers at corn Blue, part of corn Property Group (acornpropertygroup. org . Stuart Brereton, egional anaging Director, explains that the Cornish market is extremely buoyant at the moment, which he attributes to the fact that it’s one of the most sought-after areas in the . t corn, we’ve seen demand for property more so by a reassessment of lifestyle and priorities – the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have led to a re-evaluation of work life balance. He suggests that many of us now place a greater importance on easy access to outside space and fresh air , and with remote working allowing greater exibility, explains that people are realising that they can access a better quality of life, which Cornwall provides. corn has been creating award-winning and innovative residential and commercial developments for more than years, catering to those seeking the utmost in contemporary design and luxury, and who are unwilling to compromise on location. ecently, Stuart continues, corn has seen a surge in demand from those seeking to invest in its stable of homes, not just

for residential reasons. “The pandemic has limited international travel and therefore many people are opting for a staycation instead. It’s reported that more than 77% of British people aspire to own a UK holiday home according to a survey by Park Leisure , with Cornwall as the most popular destination of choice. e’re finding that investing in a second home with added potential of income via holiday letting is a more attractive opportunity than ever. Having seen this model boost local economies when owners holiday let during peak seasons and use themselves in the quieter months, Stuart adds that this provides a much longer tourism season for local businesses, something we in Cornwall can certainly get on board with. Of course, some really do prefer the character of a cottage, or the sound of the waves as they rake the sand mere moments away, and given Cornwall’s unique geography, these kinds of properties abound. And with some incredible estate agents to choose from and a growing list of highly desirable properties continuously being added to their websites, instead of waiting for current restrictions to ease, why not log on and pay those websites a visit fter all, one look won’t hurt… There are others who might be reading this, for whom gaining insight into the property market may not be with a view to buying. Indeed, as you may well be aware, since the lifting of the first lockdown last year the demand for property in Cornwall has been increasingly high, which has led many homeowners here to consider the value of their own four walls. s Sean ohnston from Philip artin Estate gents philip-martin. co.uk) says: “There seems to be more buyers than sellers at the moment, and in some cases, he continues, we have seen multiple buyers offering on a single property. This, Sean elaborates, is a trend that seems to have carried over into , with what he describes as a huge demand for properties , many of which have gone to best and final offers. For those who have been contemplating selling their Cornish home, this is interesting news indeed, and as Sean says, now is a great time do so If you are interested to find out

However, the number of interested buyers looking for property has not been reducing as we have been inundated with a record number of calls from buyers who are desperate to find their Cornish idyll. RIGHT Just a few of the properties that have been sold by Rohrs & Rowe

fter more than 100 issues of Cornwall Living, it has always been highly apparent to us that Cornwall is an incredibly entrepreneurial county and is therefore home to many inspiring brands and hard-working businesses. As a case in point, we need only look to a company we have followed with interest since its inception, Rohrs and Rowe Property Agents. The company is owned by its experienced Directors, Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe, who have recently announced that they have been named ‘The Best Estate Agency in Cornwall’ for the third time, by the highly prestigious International Property Awards. Their drive to offer something new, particularly in terms of marketing and service has clearly set them apart in the world of Cornish real estate. What’s really impressive about their latest award is, as Martyn explains: “These awards look at pretty much every element of what a good estate agency offers and so for this to have come in a year that, for so many reasons, has been like no other before, it is all the more special to us! We see it as recognition of the hard work and dedication that our excellent team have put in during an extremely di cult year. The International Property Awards focus on quality of service to clients, innovative marketing, design and originality. Each sector is scored by a group of over 80 independent industry expert judges, as well as feedback from clients of the company, and Rohrs and ohrs were duly awarded the highest five-star levels overall. Matthew comments: "When it comes to selling prime property, the first thing most people will look at are an estate agent’s marketing capabilities, as this is a hugely important factor, but we also know from our 40 plus years’ experience, that it is your service, professionalism and sales results that help you stand out from the crowd. Come the end, these are what make a client’s experience highly satisfactory and memorable. “Our service begins long before the property is launched; we assess each property individually and then form a strategy of how to best market its most saleable assets, whether

that’s a focus on the location, its interior, exterior, or views. Each property is unique and therefore deserves a tailored approach. “We often say that an acceptance of an offer is just the start of our service; our years of experience help guide sales right through to completion. We are in constant communication with both sides, identifying any possible issues and tackling them before they manifest into something that could jeopardise the sale. Martyn builds on this, explaining: “We have found our approach to be extremely effective. We have had great success in selling properties that have been on the market previously and have not found a buyer. We assess why this is, comprise a new strategy and implement it from the start, always communicating with our client throughout. “We like to think of ourselves as a boutique agency – we carefully restrict the number of properties we have at any given time to ensure that we can personally provide the best service to our clients. Indeed, as atthew rightly explains, it is one thing to promise service to lots of clients, but quite another to deliver on it! “Whilst the trophy properties we sell are the ones that grab headlines, the largest rise in demand we have experienced is for properties in the £500,000 to £900,000 region, reveals artyn. ou only have to look at the number of television programmes featuring Cornwall at the moment to see how popular the county is, he concludes. “We expect that this demand for Cornwall will continue in 2021– we have had a record number of great, motivated buyers contacting us expressing their desire to find a Cornish property to fulfil their lifestyle aspirations. Rohrs and Rowe are in need of more properties across Cornwall to satisfy this continuous demand and so if you’re looking to sell your Cornish property but have yet to find the right agent, why not give artyn and Matthew a call to see how they could help?

ith years of experience when it comes to helping clients bring their dream kitchens to life, the Kitchen Kit Ltd team have designed, supplied and installed kitchens throughout Cornwall for more than a decade. Led by Managing Director, Nigel Dilley, as home technology continues to evolve, the team are constantly updating their offering in order to deliver the latest state-of-the-art innovations to clients who’re hoping to modernise the hearts of their homes. As an example, we need look no further than ntiB ’ a cutting-edge anti-bacterial finish from Ballerina Küchen, available through Kitchen Kit. ‘Declaring war on bacteria and viruses’ is the key philosophy that underpins this fabulous range, and in light of the events that have defined the past year, this is surely something we can all get on board with! Achieved through the use of thermosethardened melamine surfaces, the materials used to achieve the anti-bacterial finish (available on worktops, carcasses and doors) require only standard household cleaning in order to preserve them. The best part is that they’re available across six different collections, meaning you can benefit from this highly coveted technology, with a kitchen style that perfectly suits your individual taste. Other examples include the impressive NikolaTesla Switch induction hob from Elica – a fully integrated, all-in-one hob and

extraction system. Perfectly integrated into the hob top, a central fan guarantees high performance in terms of fume capture, whilst remaining quiet and energy e cient so no more shouting over the extractor fan! And for those who like to ‘grow their own’, using a smart new product called ‘Backlight’, Kitchen Kit can even incorporate a miniature herb garden into your new kitchen! Combined with specially designed wooden boxes and planting pots, Backlight infinity units can be used to form the perfect planter for your indoor garden. The LED grow lights ensure optimum lighting, even in the darkest corners, and it can also be used with other plants – perfect for bringing a bit of the outside in. Specialising in quality German kitchens and appliances and bringing a wealth of experience to your kitchen project, all with a world of cutting-edge technology at their fingertips, if you’re considering updating your kitchen for the new decade ahead, then be sure to consult Nigel and the experts at Kitchen Kit Ltd.

First established in 1992, Cornish Fixings is a must-visit for anybody contemplating a brand new bathroom.

Cornish business through and through, with family at its heart, Cornish fixings has a long-serving, dedicated team that have been on hand for almost three decades. In 2016, following a rapid expansion and in response to growing interest from customers, an impressive bathrooms showroom was installed, and Paul Hawkey was brought in to create a bespoke service drawing on his vast experience in the bathroom industry. His drive to offer clients a personalised one-to-one service, from original planning and design, through to finished product and aftercare, dovetailed perfectly with the ethos of the company. After bringing Paul on board, the bathroom side of the business really took off, and in June 2017, Paul was joined by his former colleague ark, who moved to the company to continue with the expansion of the now- ourishing bathrooms department. Later still in 2019, the popular showroom was once again extended, with the addition of more display layouts to assist clients in finding their dream bathroom. The products we offer range from everyday essentials, to the most luxurious brands available, explains Paul. e now have displays showing a wide variety of products from suppliers such as Hansgrohe, uravit, itra, and more, he continues. This includes Roca – one of the world’s leading producers of bathroom products - of which Cornish Fixings is Cornwall’s exclusive provider of their Inspirational range.

Thanks to Cornish Fixings’ already wellestablished and smooth-running delivery and background operations, Paul and Mark are able to give each client as much time as they need, drawing on their wealth of experience to ensure that each design and choice of bathroom turns out exactly as desired. hat’s more, by offering a personalised and friendly service, they’re able to make what can often be a stressful experience one that you’ll actually enjoy. After all, a new bathroom should be something to get excited about ith a wide choice of styles and layouts, and a variety of options to suit all budgets, you can peruse the showroom’s working displays at your leisure and confidently draw on the expertise on-hand from Paul, ark and the team. ith many years’ combined experience of working alongside interior designers, architects, hoteliers, plumbers, builders and developers, as well as members of the general public, they welcome customers at any time to pop into the showroom and take a look around, meaning that if you have a bathroom dream in mind, Cornish Fixings should certainly be on your list of places to start.

A banner YEAR

Despite the struggles we have all faced over the past year, Julie Oats and the team at The Grey Lurcher in Falmouth have remained incredibly busy.

S

howcasing a carefully curated selection of contemporary gifts and homewares, this popular Falmouth shop also stocks a variety of cards, gift wrap and French soaps, along with a selection of shaving products. It has proven a big hit among new and returning customers alike; so much so, that despite the ongoing effects of the pandemic, the past year has been a momentous one The Grey Lurcher. eturning from the fi rst lockdown, explains Julie, who owns the store, “an amazing opportunity presented itself. A property that we had always loved had become vacant on the High Street; number 20 was up for rent and as our lease was about to end, we went for it. After establishing ourselves on the street, the new shop would enable us to move to a more prominent position. Of course, moving in the height of summer was something of a leap of faith. Nevertheless, Julie and co spent a couple of weeks renovating in preparation for the big move. “Paint brushes were the order of the day, laughs ulie, who explains that within a couple of weeks, the new premises was re-decorated and ready for stock to be moved in. “We moved in August and we haven’t looked back since, and interestingly, she continues, because we were in the same shop that had stocked

Annie Sloan paint many years ago, our paint sales went up. But it’s not just a new move that kept The Grey Lurcher team busy during 2020. Locked down again in November, they decided to open a pop-up shop at The Old Market in Chacewater – an amazing food and plant market, right in the middle of the village. “That worked so well that it has now become one of our permanent outlets, says ulie. e are open daily in the market, and happy to drop any products from the Falmouth shop there for you to collect. Keen to keep up their momentum, the team’s outlook for the year ahead looks as busy as the year just gone. As Julie says: “We haven’t been resting on our laurels during this latest lockdown either, and the spring will see the launch of our brand-new website This means you’ll be able to access the wonderful array of products that are currently only available in store. To make sure you’re among the fi rst to hear about its launch, be sure to follow The Grey Lurcher on social media.

CHAMPIONING CHANGE BELOW ê Johnny Pearce and Tom Stringer stand in front of the new recyclable tins

O

Newquay’s Oltco makes the switch from plastic packaging to recyclable tin.

ltco, the UK’s leading sustainable resin driveway company, is expanding its sustainable offering by switching from plastic resin packaging to recyclable metal tins. This coincides with Oltco’s current innovative and award-winning sustainable resin driveway solution, Recycle Bound. With Oltco’s HQ based in Newquay, Directors Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce have always been aware of the damaging impact waste plastic has on the environment. This led the duo to launch ecycle Bound, the world’s first sustainable resin driveway solution made utilising waste plastic that is already in circulation, and has now driven them to

take their commitment one step further by eradicating plastic from Oltco's packaging. With Cornwall’s rich history in the tin mining industry, Oltco is proud to be connected to this heritage by choosing tin for its new packaging. Since its inception in 2004, Oltco has grown a wide network of franchisees and employees, and Johnny and Tom wanted to include the entire team during this process. The new packaging has been tried and tested on site with Oltco’s franchisees to ensure that it is suitable for the job and has been met with resounding success. “This was an easy decision for us but one that took a lot of time to finalise, and we couldn’t be more excited with the results,” says company Co-Director, Johnny Pearce. “In business, it is common for people to make short-term decisions to bring about fast results with the sole aim of increasing profit. t ltco we look to the future and want to make sure we are delivering the best results for our customers, our team and the planet. We’re proud to be a business that fights for change and one that focuses on the triple bottom line: people, planet and profit. “This launch not only means a lot to Johnny and I but also to our wider Oltco network,” explains Co-Director Tom Stringer. “We discussed the new packaging with each member of the Oltco team and found their insight incredibly valuable. Their feedback filled us with every confidence as we received a unanimous ‘of course we should do this’. It means so much to us to have the support from our Oltco family. This new packaging fits perfectly with our ethos ‘to feel good about the work that we do and the decisions that we make’, and it demonstrates our continued commitment to protecting the environment. We hope our customers love this new packaging as much as we do!”

he Isles of Scilly lie just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall. They are the most south-westerly point of England and, bathed in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, the climate there often feels more like that of a tropical island! With white sand beaches and clear blue seas the Isles of Scilly have always enjoyed warmer weather than the mainland. In the past – before heated greenhouses – the very first daffodils of the year would come over from the islands by boat to be put on the train and rushed to the ower markets of Covent Garden, where people clamoured for the first blooms of spring Tra c now ows the other way you might catch the train down to Penzance and sail across to the islands on Scillonian III or y from Exeter or Land’s End. Greeted on arrival with white sand beaches and clear blue seas, you could be forgiven for thinking you had own long-haul rather than a -minute hop from Land’s End or 60 minutes from Exeter airport. The ferry from Penzance takes a gentle hours and minutes. Discovering the delights of these sandfringed islands will definitely help to recharge your batteries after the winter and if you want to reconnect with nature, the grey seals, pu ns and red squirrels will be pleased to guide your way. If it’s peace and

quiet you’re looking for it’s never hard to find a tide-swept beach, where yours are the only footprints in the sand. Whichever way you choose to travel to the islands, the journey will be a unique part of your holiday memories.

rusted Cornish Experts with Traditional Family Values: this is the mission statement that drives everything the team at Cornish Traditional Cottages does. Founded in 1964 by ichael Powell, this stellar firm has been specialising in the letting of Cornish holiday homes ever since, and as Managing Director George Edward-Collins says: “We’re Cornwall based, Cornwall owned, and Cornwall focused.” For anybody who owns, or is considering investing in, a Cornish holiday let, one question that almost certainly needs answering is which holiday agency is best equipped to represent your property and help you ensure that your guests make the most of their stay. “We know that your guests are looking for a personal service and want to speak to a friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable person when booking their hard-earned Cornish holiday,” continues George. At Cornish Traditional Cottages, the team pride themselves on customer service that’s respectful, courteous, cheerful, fun and well trained. Each member of the team is tenacious in their approach to ensuring you and your guests get the most out of your property, which, as George explains, “ensures they will always go the extra mile to ensure our customers’ questions, wishes and whims can be accommodated.”

Being based in Cornwall also means that the team are on the ground and available to offer help and support when needed. It also means that they are naturally experts on the local area, with a deep well of knowledge, insider tips and first-hand experience that they’re more than happy to share. What all of this means is that whether you’re a holiday home owner hoping to capitalise on your Cornish property, or a guest in search of the ultimate escape to the seaside, Cornish Traditional Cottages comes highly recommended.

LOCAL SERVICE,

NATIONAL REACH Helpful Holidays has been one of the leading south west holiday cottage agencies for more than 40 years. DISCOVER MORE Don’t just take our word for it! Helpful Holidays have a huge marketing budget at their disposal; a whopping £15.5m! With 500,000 Google search terms for high visibility and bookings; 60 million emails sent so far using intelligent computer modelling; 350,000 followers on social media; and 500,000 print mailings to a loyal customer base, the numbers really speak for themselves!

F

rom a small cottage business set up around the Dartmoor farmhouse kitchen table of the original owners, with just a small number of cottages, Helpful Holidays has grown significantly, now with more than 650 stylish holiday homes, covering the whole of the West Country. This award-winning company experienced impressive further growth when it became part of the Sykes Holiday Cottages family in , and by keeping the local o ce and friendly approach – along with the kind of personal service that only a regional o ce can deliver the Helpful Holidays team is able to remain on hand for their homeowners, who they get to know personally. At the same time, having access to the marketing budget of a national company has allowed them to generate a huge increase in bookings for their happy clients! With the ‘staycation’ here to stay and travel restrictions in place, the Helpful Holidays team have seen a massive uplift in booking levels like never before, which is now leading to demand so great that they’re inviting new owners to join their portfolio. One recent new property, only launched this February, has already obtained 30 weeks of bookings, generating £62,000 for the owner.

Mill Barn

This is a testament to the increasing demand for good-quality holiday properties. Emily Rossiter, who has been letting her property with Helpful Holidays for more than seven years, says: “We are thoroughly delighted with the high level of bookings we are achieving, together with the excellent personal service we receive. I wholeheartedly recommend Helpful Holidays to anyone wishing to holiday let their property.” Mr and Mrs Burden agree. Having been with Helpful Holidays for more than 19 years, they say: “Helpful Holidays are the best agent to guarantee success with your holiday business.” If you have a holiday home or are thinking of buying one, you are invited to call the team and chat with the expert property managers about your individual property in an informal manner with no obligation.

unset House and Seascape are amongst the most popular holiday cottages in the far west town of St Just, let through local self-catering cottage agency Cornish Cottage Holidays – and it’s not hard to see why. Both are owned by arl Callighan and we caught up with him to find out more. arl tells us that Seascape was the first of his properties he chose to holiday let. With luxurious interiors and designed specifically for style-conscious guests, good design can be found in every aspect of Seascape. The delightful, open-plan kitchen/diner, lounge with wood-burning stove, along with its stunning coastal views, and the indulgent hot tub and private and secure garden make for the perfect getaway by the sea. Set in an rea of utstanding atural Beauty, Seascape is a special addition to Cornish Cottage Holidays’ portfolio. Fusing the best of traditional materials and methods with ecologic, it has five boutique-standard bedrooms and three lavish bathrooms. Sunset House was Karl’s next property to join the Cornish Cottage Holidays collection and with polished concrete oors that ow throughout, this gives a glimpse of the opulence that abounds here. It’s evident from

the quality of the materials used throughout both properties that the owner takes great pride in his craftsmanship. The properties are built on land belonging to Lord Falmouth and Karl decided to use a lot of reclaimed granite so that the properties remained in keeping with the area. Each brick has been reclaimed from across Cornwall and many from properties over 300 years old. Karl enjoys working closely with his architects to ensure the properties are built for purpose, both practically and aesthetically. Karl has also taken a lot of his design in uences from his travels around the world. Seascape has in uences from Bali, with bright colours, geometric prints and even tropical palms in the garden, while Sunset House has lots of French furniture including the beds and cabinets. ou’ll find these wonderful holiday homes located deep in Poldark country with glorious open rural views to the sea and the Isles of Scilly on the horizon beyond.

his month is no exception, as evidenced by the launch of Cornish Tea’s new range of loose-leaf Organic Teas and Tisanes, all made in the company’s new factory. The range consists of Cornish Breakfast, Earl Grey, Decaf, Winter Tea, Peppermint, Green Tea, and Red Berry, and whichever takes your fancy, the fragrance of the leaves as they stew is amazing. Having hit the shelves this February, each tea in the range is organic, plastic free, and packaged with sustainable cardboard, making each brew a cuppa with a conscience! So what else is happening? Well, as you may know, the G7 Summit is due to take place at St Ives’ Carbis Bay Hotel and Tregenna Castle this coming June, which is fantastic news for Cornwall as a whole. It is particularly great news for Duncan and the team at Cornish Tea & Coffee, who are suppliers for both of these luxury hotels, as it means they will, this June, be the supplier to many of the world’s leaders. As Duncan puts it: “To think that heads of state will be having a cup of Cornish Tea & Coffee whilst working out the world’s problems…” Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, Cornish Tea & Coffee have continued to push forward. The new factory is now both complete and organic certified, and the team have recently gained their SALSA (Safe and Local Supplier pproval certification, enabling the company to manufacture teas for other high-street brands. “This is an amazing achievement by the team,” says Duncan. “In nine years, we have grown from working out of an attic, to operating out of four large industrial units and o ces, with a eet of vehicles and a growing staff to look after our customers.” The latest addition to the team is Sarah, who joins Cornish Tea as the new Quality Development Technologist Manager. “This,” explains Duncan, “is a key role in keeping the quality of the products to a high standard. Bringing in new people like Sarah is our commitment to the quality of the brand. e will start to fill these key roles with more highly trained people in

the future, and keeping these skilled jobs in Cornwall always makes me happy!” As it looks to continue building upon nine years of success, it would seem that the only way is up for Cornish Tea & Coffee. Here at Cornwall Living, we can’t wait to see what the future brings for Duncan and co, as they continue to serve the world cup by cup.

It offers visitors a place of sanctuary, one where horticulture is celebrated and nature allowed to ourish. As well as being a wonderful place to explore, the nursery is home to an inspiring shop full of gift ideas, plants and accessories for avid horticulturalists, as well as a café featuring local produce. WEDDINGS

O MAIN Find a secluded spot by the sea for your wedding photos ABOVE RIGHT There is perhaps nowhere more romantic than by the sea RIGHT Where better to cut the cake?

f course, given that we live and breathe Cornwall, we can understand that we may be considered biased. In actual fact, we are, but with good reason! Cornwall has a unique geography that, in equal measure, draws visitors from out of county and locals out of their homes, even in the coldest months. It’s almost impossible to resist the draw of the ocean, be it when the opalescent waters are at calm, or when a fierce storm is throwing titanic waves against the stoic Cornish clifftops. Whether you’re stretching your legs, enjoying a picnic, or exploring new places, there are few things that aren’t made better when enjoyed by the sea, and a wedding is no exception. When many picture themselves getting married, they envisage a stunning ocean background, the likes of which you’ll see in any number of films, in locations that are often a world away. But why go to all that trouble when the Cornish coast is as good, if not better, than those in your favourite rom-coms? A superb example would be at Polurrian on the Lizard, a fabulous hotel perched on the cliffs of the wild Lizard peninsula, offering bespoke weddings with a host of different packages to suit all couples. Turn to page 65 to read more. Even if your vision veers more towards a countryside or woodland setting, Cornwall has you covered. With miles upon miles of undulating countryside, with patchwork fields offering staggering views, and pockets of woodland that scream ‘fairytale wedding’, finding the perfect spot in which to say I do’ is perhaps never easier than here in the Duchy. Even if you’ve found your location but need to source some kind of shelter for your reception, the team at Wild Tipi have some magical solutions available that promise to make yours a day that your guests will never forget. Turn to page 60 to discover more about this superb company’s gorgeous tipis. Whilst location is of course paramount, so too are all the little details that go towards making your special day precisely that. For parents or in-laws hoping to find the perfect gowns and hats, Manor Fashions in Helston (manorfashions.co.uk) has a wonderful

selection of outfits, with a personalised service that promises to help proud parents look their finest for their child’s big day. ne other detail that simply can’t be overlooked, is your reception, and catering for hungry guests! Fortunately, Cornwall’s foodie scene only continues to grow in renown, thanks to an abundance of independent and organic suppliers and producers. ACHIEVING

Lisa and Philip Evans explain how Outset Cornwall helped them bring their business vision to life.

W

hen Lisa and Philip bought Blackwater Farm in 2013, achieving their long-held ambition of moving to the country, little did they know the life-changing journey they were about to embark on. Getting started on breathing new life into the tired, unloved farm and making it their home, Lisa and Philip quickly realised it had the potential to become much more, so combining their love for animals with their creative passions, they decided to turn Blackwater Farm into a business too.

“We’ve always loved animals, so I think we were just destined to become farmers,” says Lisa. “Moving to Blackwater seemed like the perfect opportunity to utilise my teaching and zoo animal management experience and Philip’s engineering background to create something that celebrates our love of animals and the countryside. I always said we’d make the farm somewhere we could share with others, so what better way than as a wedding venue!”

Even though Lisa planned to retire from her Head of School post at the end of the academic year, she was still working full time, so attending sessions online and in the evenings meant she could fit them around work. “I found the sessions invaluable. Getting advice and encouragement from experts who’ve been there, making connections with other small businesses and generally having great support to fall back on massively boosts your confidence and helps keep you on track. I definitely wouldn’t have got this far without Outset.” ith The Garden edding oom finished and their wedding ceremonies licence obtained, Bridle & Groom is now ready for bookings and Philip and Lisa are turning their attention to converting an old horse box into The Eq-Wine Bar and building a treehouse. “We aim to offer couples a complete package; they can have their ceremony in The Garden Wedding Room, enjoy a hog roast prepared in our Porka-Cabin using our own meat and produce and dine in our beautifully decorated marquee, complete with chandeliers,” Lisa tells us. “Guests can camp on site, and we’re looking at incorporating our animals into ceremonies, if our brides and grooms would like a donkey or lamb as their ring bearer!” Setting up the business hasn’t been without its challenges, the biggest being Covid-19 and the disruption and uncertainty it’s caused for so many. “We’ve tried to be as adaptable as we can, offering a two-date deal to ease some of the pressure for couples, finishes Lisa. The joy for us is in making their day special; we just love the creative process and can’t wait to get started on bringing their dream wedding to life!”

Lisa and Philip “We both visited Dobwalls as children,” Lisa explains, “so we were delighted to be able to incorporate things that bring back such fond memories for us. In fact, we’ve spent two years finding the exact items we knew would work here, reusing and repurposing as much of the original farm equipment as we can to make it authentic.” It was while she was painting in what’s now The Garden Wedding Room during the first lockdown that Lisa heard a radio advert for Outset Cornwall. Realising they needed some help and support to make their business dream a reality, Lisa got in touch. “We had so many plans and ideas, I was worried we’d overlook some legal detail as we set up the business,” says Lisa. “I knew that a comprehensive business course like Outset’s would close the gaps in my knowledge, so I signed up, and I’m very glad I did.”

FREEDOM

IN RETIREMENT Three things you might not know about Equity Release, from the team at Harris Begley.

E

ach year, older homeowners use Equity Release to help access millions of pounds to fund their retirement, and why not? As property prices have risen significantly and time spent in retirement gets longer, as you might expect, it’s becoming an increasingly popular option. The term usually refers to a Lifetime Mortgage, that is, a mortgage secured against your home to release funds which are typically paid back when you pass away or move into long-term care. If you think Equity Release could be for you, here are three important things you may not know about it, to help inform your decision.

This article is for general information only and does not constitute advice. The information is aimed at retail clients only. Equity Release will reduce the value of your estate and can affect your eligibility for means-tested benefits.

1. You can make more than one withdrawal While it is possible to take a single lump sum using Equity Release, it isn’t the only option. Depending on your lifestyle and goals, it may make more sense to make several smaller withdrawals over a longer period. Known as a ‘Drawdown Lifetime Mortgage’, this can provide more exibility and act as a cash reserve for unforeseen events, if needed. However, you must bear in mind that further withdrawals will reduce the equity you hold in your home and increase the level of interest owed on the loan. 2. You have the right to remain in your home Not wanting to move home is often a reason people consider Equity Release. It’s a product that can release funds without having to downsize, however, a common concern is that a lender would be able to force them to move out, but this is not the case when choosing a

plan that meets the standards of the Equity Release Council. Borrowers have the right to remain in their home until the end of the loan. This is usually when you die or your property is sold to fund long-term care. 3. You don’t have to own your home You don't have to own your home outright to be eligible for Equity Release. If you’re still paying a mortgage, some of the money you draw down will be used to pay off the remaining debt, meaning the amount accessible to you will be lower. Usually, you can borrow up to 60% of the value you own, but lower restrictions may apply depending on the lender. In fact, you can use Equity Release to pay off mortgage debt you may have as you enter retirement. It's a step that can reduce outgoings at a time when your income may decrease. Before moving forward with Equity Release plans, you should assess your wider financial situation, as there may be other assets that can help you achieve your goals without the drawbacks of a Lifetime Mortgage. With that in mind it makes sense to contact Harris Begley to discuss your aspirations and the options available to you.
