to the June edition of Cornwall Living!
W
ith plenty of time to explore over the last year, I have come to the conclusion that Cornwall is one big adventure playground! It’s a given that Cornwall’s beaches offer up world-class beach and reef breaks, making it a surfing ecca for many. However its uiet coves and natural sea pools invite a gentler ocean past time, wild swimming, and with water clarity to rival the finest e otic dive locations e ploring beneath the waves is a oy. ot a waterbabe o problem. With over miles of coastline Cornwall affords endless cliff walks along the South West Coast Path, as well as many inland, countryside paths to explore. And for those who prefer two wheels, the Duchy’s cycle trails offer safe and en oyable rides for all. Turn to page 22, to read this month’s cover feature and to get some great ideas on how to plan your next outdoor adventure. o edition of Cornwall Living would be complete without taking a look at some of the prestigious property currently on the market. From page 31, let us do the legwork while you house hunt from the comfort of your armchair. And talking of homes, this month sees the return of the ever-popular Cornwall Home and arden Show from th to th une. We’ve got an e clusive preview of some of the fantastic e hibitors as well some news ahead of this year’s show, so you can plan your day and not miss out on a thing. Turn to page 53 for the lowdown. As ever, we also have holiday homes to delight (from page 73), interiors to excite (from page 40) and works of art to inspire (from page 91). ...happy reading!

Ready for the new normal?
Getting set for
the season ahead
As restrictions gradually lift over the next few months, and more people receive their first and second vaccinations there finally seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel here in the UK. But the return to some sort of normality also heralds a return to work, and many people are realising that the traditional nine to five’ and all that comes with it ust isn’t for them anymore.
redundancy or furlough. For others, it came from a desire to remain active, putting their time to good use to develop passions and hobbies or repurpose existing skills into a new business. For many, it simply provided an opportunity to realise a dream of starting something of their own.
atest figures published by the ce for National Statistics show that the number of new companies created in the UK soared in the second half of 2020, as people used their time at home to develop and start a business, motivated by various circumstances and reasons.
Whatever their motivation, one thing these new entrepreneurs agree upon is that having the right support behind you is essential. So if returning to a regular nine to five’ has lost its appeal, or you simply want to turn your hobby, passion or skills into a new business, utset Cornwall funded by the uropean Regional Development Fund, HM overnment and the utset Foundation offers a fully funded, award-winning support programme that can help you get started.

News & views What’s happening at The Grey Lurcher?
Fences that will stand the test of time
Despite the struggles faced over the past year, Julie Oats and the team at The Grey Lurcher in Falmouth have nevertheless remained incredibly busy. In fact, they are, as we write, preparing to launch a brand-new website at the beginning of May! “The lockdown has given us time to look at the business and opportunities to move things around,” says Julie. In fact, late last year they decided to open a pop-up shop at The Old Market in Chacewater. “That worked so well,” continues Julie, “that it has now become one of our permanent outlets. We are open daily in the market, and happy to drop any products from the Falmouth shop there for you to collect.” For Julie, the lockdown was also the obvious time to invest in online shopping. For the Grey Lurcher, this means a small, dedicated website, tailored to its most popular product lines, with a strong emphasis on click and collect. “We really like the customer interaction, and knowing your customers is essential in this changing
retail environment,” Julie explains. In fact, it’s fair to say that more people than ever have been shopping online – with their favourite high street stores closed for the lockdown – and this has had something of a permanent effect on the way people shop, even as we look to lose government restrictions. This makes now the perfect time for The Grey Lurcher to launch its online store, and Julie hopes that as customers become more confident this side of the business will only continue to grow.
With summer upon us, we all want to look forward to spending more time outdoors, and in 2021 this has never been truer. For many people, the tedious task of keeping the garden tidy, maintaining lawns, and fences can be all too time consuming, detracting from the joy that is being able to sit outside and enjoy your garden. ColourFence has been designed with this in mind. While the team may not be able to wash your patio or trim your hedges and they definitely won’t clean your BBQ!) these steel fences, which are guaranteed not to warp, crack, shrink, rot or peel, are maintenance free for 25 years – so no pesky annual repaints. They can also withstand winds of up to 130mph, taking the worry out of having to replace panels after the next storm! For more information call 01637 222578 or visit www.colourfencecornwall.co.uk
Enabling access to a wonderful array of products that, until now, have only been available in store, be sure to visit the new Grey Lurcher website and discover the carefully curated selection of wares that have made this store so popular on Falmouth’s High Street. For more information call 01326 618240 or visit www.greylurcherfalmouth.com
Add some colour to your life The team at Whitegoose are thrilled to have once again thrown open their doors, welcoming back their wonderful customers after a long, cold, and often lonely, winter. Now that spring is upon us, with summer just around the corner, owner Maggie is determined to help her customers live a life in colour: “We didn’t waste the time during the lockdown; we had the exterior of the little Goose re-painted, and I spent time sourcing new collections of our super colourful and eclectic clothing, jewellery, cushions and table
lamps. I’ve also resumed stocking French and Italian soaps.” In stock, Maggie and co have gorgeous silk and linen shirts, Breton stripe dresses, skirts and t-shirts from SUZY D, and coming soon, says Maggie, is a fabulous summer collection from One Life. To put it simply, if your wardrobe could use an injection of colour for the season ahead, be sure to pay Whitegoose in Wadebridge a visit. You won’t be disappointed! Lunch with a view at The Terrace
Curio brings California to Cornwall
Cornish artisan distillery Curio has launched its brand-new range of hard seltzers in time for summer. Hard seltzers are the fastest growing drinks sector in the United States and have been for the past two years. The hard seltzer phenomenon is set to arrive in the UK this summer.
Next time you’re planning on walking a section of the stunning South West Coast Path on the Lizard peninsula, why not book a table for lunch at The Terrace at Housel Bay? With unrivalled sea views, this is a tranquil oasis from which to enjoy a dish from the new spring menu which showcases local, seasonal produce. Head Chef oseph Fallowfield tells us that: “The Lizard peninsula truly is a Mecca for stunning produce and, to an extent, that makes our job easy. It’s a joy to work with such incredible ingredients and create an experience that we cannot wait to share with you.” The restaurant will be re-opening for bookings from May 17th and there’s also the opportunity to sample a delicious afternoon tea. Created from spirited sparkling water, husband and wife team, William and Rubina Tyler-Street’s inspiration for the new range has been the Cornish outdoor lifestyle. ubina e plains: “We wanted to create a drink to enjoy anywhere, from the beach to the back garden. There’s a word people in Cornwall use to describe the easy going Californian-esque outdoor lifestyle we lead in the county and that’s ‘Kernowfornia’, which sums this up and positions it perfectly for the post-lockdown way people want to enjoy the outdoors, socialising with friends and family. We have created a range of incredible avour combinations there is a avour for everyone to enjoy this summer.” Now available online and in independent stores, the range has been created to highlight a new interest in ‘wellbeing’ drinking choices. At its core is a 4.5% abv
alcohol based spirited sparkling water which is gluten free. The avourings are all natural, vegan friendly and with zero sugar, each 330ml can is only 84 calories which will keep the beach-ready body in shape. Curio, with no less than 15 awards, is famous for its innovative ideas and its focus on uintessential avour and the Curio Hard Seltzer range does not disappoint. The avour combinations are exceptional, including the delicate Peach and Rose, the warmth and zing of Rhubarb and Ginger, the sweet Pear and lder ower tropical fruity ango and the latest avour to be unveiled is the stunning Yuzu and Mandarin. With impactful packaging by Falmouth based design company Kingdom and Sparrow highlighting the beautiful colours and shapes of the avourings this new range is bound to be a major success. The range has also been packaged in aluminium cans for easy recycling. For more information call 07980 943391 or visit www.curiohardseltzer.co.uk

Sustainable solutions
from Scribe
At Cornish carpentry specialist, Scribe, the team believe that modern methods of construction have become quite unsustainable, despite national efforts, with long supply chains negatively impacting our environment. “We feel that a return to the use of locally sourced, recyclable, reclaimable and biodegradable building materials can make a positive impact on our ecosystem and economy here in Cornwall,” explains Managing Director, Michael Truscott. So what can you do? If you’re mindful of your impact on the environment and are undertaking a home improvement or self-build project, why not consider timber cladding? “Timber is completely carbon negative,” says Michael, “as it sequesters more carbon during its growth

New charity stores in
Newquay and Truro Offering the largest charity shop chain in the county, Cornwall Hospice Care relies heavily on income from its stores to fund the care provided at its two Cornish hospices. Now the healthcare charity has opened new outlets in Moresk Road, Truro and Bank Street, Newquay. “Our shops have been closed for seven of the last twelve months,” explains Frazer Hopkins, Head of Retail at the charity. “That represents a huge loss of income and though our hospices at Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle, have remained open 24/7 we really need to start trading with determination.” “Newquay is a 21st century take on a traditional charity shop offering pre-loved clothing, books and bric-a-brac
in a spacious store where customers can shop safely and at a distance to others. At Truro, our new site is huge, having formally been a car showroom. Here we’ll be selling pre-loved furniture and providing a Donation Station to which people can bring their items.” For more information visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/ shop-cornwall/covid-19-latest-shopnews

The award-winning, open-plan gallery in St Just, known for its world-class exhibitions, is currently displaying three shows, including two by renowned contemporary artist, Kurt Jackson. Wheat: From Plough to Plate sees Jackson trace the journey of a staple crop, wheat, from field to fork in a range of media spanning paint, sculpture and poetry. The Burn sees him explore this theme further, focussing on the area surrounding a 500 year-old Scottish water mill. nd finally Echoes of a Vanished World is a beautiful and fascinating photography exhibition of images from travels in Africa, South merica and the Pacific by celebrated explorer (and founder of Survival International) Robin Hanbury-Tenison OBE. All three exhibitions can be viewed at the Jackson Foundation until August, and are also available online. For more information call 01736 787638 or visit www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com
Enjoy a traditional Cornish afternoon tea at the historic Falmouth Hotel, situated in prime position overlooking castle beach. Indeed, you will be in good company alongside some of the greats, including Beatrix Potter, Simon Le Bon, prime ministers and even royalty. It’s not for no reason that this iconic and history stay is known fondly as the ‘Grand Dame’ of Falmouth! With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that the team take great care in serving up one of England’s all-time favourite culinary traditions. On your visit, you can expect warm, freshly baked, crumbling scones, served alongside locally made preserves and lashings of Cornish Rodda’s clotted
cream, as well as a selection of traditional sandwiches and homemade cakes and pastries, all accompanied by a traditional pot of tea or coffee. Fresh, local and homemade produce make this a truly gastronomical delight. The idyllic setting and stunning Victorian architecture make it one of the most iconic hotels in the county. If the sun is shining, enjoy your tea on the manicured lawns with the famous Pendennis Castle perched on the headland, or sample one of the many dining areas, all with far-reaching views and a historical ambience. Now that restrictions are easing, many of us are making plans to travel abroad, either for work or pleasure. However, with certain Covid travel constraints still in place, it can be challenging to get everything in place to allow you to y. Luckily, Dr Stolte and his team at MEDfacials in Truro have set up sister company, Rapid Health Test, to provide the necessary certification before and after you travel abroad. Rapid Health Test is currently the only government-approved clinic in Cornwall to offer same-day PCR tests with Fit to Fly Travel Certification. It is also one of only a handful of government-approved clinics that can provide two and eight-day test results for returning travellers. Appointments are available in the Truro clinic or from your own home,

Treating each project as if it were their own Now over two years since its inception, West Coast Architecture is going from strength to strength. The focus for this young, vibrant and passionate architecture practice is private residential projects. Lead Arcitect Antonio Sánchez, explains that it is “our personal and friendly approach that has become something of a selling point to our clients.” Working with both private self-builders that wish to build their own extension or new build, to developers looking for a full technical design for their projects, a collaborative approach has proved to be hugely successful. Covering all elements of the process including concept designs, planning applications and building control, and with an ever-expanding portfolio of residential clients, it is evident that the team’s passion for good design is what is helping this Newquay-based studio to grow.

A spring to remember for Mike Lacey Mike recently returned to the waters of Cornwall to get some new photos, and just happened to get surrounded by the most incredible gentle giants of the sea, basking sharks “I was out at Porthcurno when suddenly these massive shapes started appearing around me says ike. “It was the most unbelievable experience. They are completely harmless and feed only on the plankton owing in the ulf Stream, but their size can be intimidating and make for some truly humbling moments when you’re so close.”
Having never been so close, Mike seized the moment to capture these stunning images of them before they left our beautiful coastline. To celebrate, he has created a signed and numbered, limited-edition run of 18x6 triple prints, available framed for £85. There is both a full colour and black and white version, with only 100 of each being made available, and Mike will be donating 10% of sales to the Marine Conservation Society. think we can all agree that after a year of lockdowns and restrictions on our daily lives, as we look forward to a not-so-distant future when things might return to normal, nothing sounds quite as inviting as time spent out in Cornwall’s great outdoors. From one extreme to the other, if you’d rather remain close to ground level, exploring Cornwall on two wheels is another great way to en oy our county’s great outdoors. The Camel Trail near Padstow and Wadebridge is the obvious place to start offering a family friendly cycle alongside the Camel stuary with delicious foodie options at either end. Lesser known trails include the Coast to Coast’ trail running as you might expect, from the north to the south coast, starting at Portreath to the north and finishing at evoran to the south. The main trail runs for miles through Scorrier Woods, the Poldice Valley and alongside the stunning Restronguet Creek, making it a superb choice for those hoping to soak up the best of Cornwall’s coast and
countryside. The trail is almost entirely purpose-made for cyclists but does include some country lanes. Another popular choice and one which you’ll also find on the Cornwall Trails website cornwalltrails.net is the reat Flat ode. This circular route of around seven miles includes some challenging terrain but it does take you through some of Cornwall’s most iconic ‘mining country’. Named after a two-mile long ‘lode’ of tin ore that was discovered in the area during the s this trail is perfect for cyclists who are fascinated by Cornwall’s relatively recent industrial heritage. Passing by the remains of the engine houses time spent here transports you back to a time when the area would have been abu with the sounds of industry.

Downstairs, the sizeable kitchen – complete with granite worktops, a range-style cooker and a wine cooler built into the large central island – leads out via French doors to the private Mediterranean style courtyard. To the right of the driveway you’ll also find an extensive area of lawn, which has been landscaped and planted with an abundance of colourful plants, shrubs and trees. Situated in a rural position on the edge of the picture-perfect and highly sought-after village of St Mawgan, The Granary is just three miles from the sand and sea of Mawgan Porth. The wider north coast is a paradise for foodies, explorers and watersport enthusiasts alike, with celebrity owned restaurants, seemingly endless miles of coastal walks, and some of the best sailing waters in the UK. Put simply, as more than ever are seeing the benefits of the Cornish lifestyle, with many choosing to swap their busy urban lives for the peace and tranquillity of the coast, The Granary represents the kind of lifestyle opportunity that’s becoming increasingly hard to come by.

A NEW STANDARD Recently sold by Shore Partnership, luxury property development Ocean Walk stands as testament to Cornwall’s burgeoning property market.
A
s specialists in Cornwall’s luxury property market, Shore Partnership has seen a huge rise in demand for top-end Cornish homes. With restrictions lifting and more people e changing city and o ce life for less restrictive work-from-home living, why wouldn’t your destination of choice be Cornwall? Its stunning beaches, incredible countryside and an excellent food culture is drawing buyers from far and wide. Ocean Walk is the perfect example of why discerning buyers are looking to purchase in the Duchy. This exclusive development of five coastal homes set in the vibrant seaside village and popular surfing and holiday destination, of Perranporth, offered buyers the opportunity to live in a sought-after location, with the beach just a short walk away and a village centre offering plenty of amenities, along with some great places to eat and drink. Connectivity to the wider UK and Europe from here was also a strong selling point, with Cornwall Airport Newquay offering ights to Heathrow atwick and the north of ngland along with regular ights to Spain and Portugal (during non-Covid times), as well as a nearby mainline rail link to London Paddington. The properties themselves were designed with their location in mind. With the added
security of a gated entrance, outside stores for bikes and surfboards, outside space and all properties with access to an electric car charging point, they ticked all the boxes when it came to modern living. Internally, inspirational designs and attention to architectural detail, resulted in generous proportions, full-height glazing and expansive kitchen/dining rooms with access to a courtyard garden, plus a separate sitting room with access to a full-width balcony. It goes without saying that kitchens and bathrooms were furnished to the highest standards and uality fittings were apparent throughout. With added touches such as spacious balconies, air source heat pumps and under oor heating it meant that these homes were snapped up the moment they hit the market. So, if you’re a developer, looking to relocate to the Duchy, or indeed are looking to sell your Cornish home, then Shore Partnership are on-hand with a winning combination of experience and expertise.

he Courtyard at Duporth is a unique collection of 38, two and threebedroom homes. Centred around a landscaped courtyard and a Grade II listed clock tower, The Courtyard is part of Acorn Blue’s Lifetime Living Collection, and you’ll find it tucked away above a secluded beach overlooking St Austell Bay. The remit of Acorn's design team was to create a wonderful new community rooted in heritage, nature and the beauty of the surroundings. Architects Stride Treglown designed a bespoke range of buildings and spaces all telling their own story, with a variety of character to suit differing needs and tastes. The common feature is a consistent attention to detail and quality, always making the most of light, space, outlook and nature. The clock tower at the heart of the development is enhanced by its courtyard garden setting with native ower species and tranquil places to sit and soak up the Cornish sun. LIFESTYLE around this have been updated to provide comfortable homes whilst retaining the character and layers of history in the stonework and exposed trusses. Stepping down rchard Way you’ll find a collection of new houses and apartments with generous south and east facing balconies overlooking the bay. Nature threads its way throughout the site, from the bee and batfriendly planting of the central courtyard to the grass roofs of the Bay View houses that nestle below, providing a transition to the site’s private woodland. All of the apartments and houses have been designed to balance comfort privacy light and ow of space whilst embracing the glorious ocean vista. A home here makes for the perfect base from which to explore the area. The horseshoeshaped Carlyon Bay, protected by the twin headlands at Trenarren and Menabilly, this is the heart of Daphne Du Maurier country. Charlestown Harbour (less than a mile from The Courtyard) sits at its centre, a oncebooming port during the 18th century thanks to mining and china clay, and the area is backed by the town of St Austell. For the discerning beach lover, the sands at Porthpean and Duporth beach offer calm waters, perfect for a spot of sunbathing or wild swimming. What's more, residents of The Courtyard enjoy direct access to the beach! This relatively new past time, of immersing yourself in water year-round, has taken Cornwall by storm and heralds numerous health benefits for all whatever your age. Once you’ve enjoyed a dip in the ocean, you can warm up with a steaming mug of coffee during the summer season from the beach café. For out of season swims, be sure to take plenty of warm clothes and a ask of your favourite brew to ward of the chills. For the more adventurous, this is a haven for kayakers and paddleboarders alike. Gliding over the smooth waters, this is the perfect opportunity for some wildlife spotting, who knows you might be lucky enough to be joined by an inquisitive seal or two!
If you prefer to undertake your adventures on dry land, and are happier on a fairway, then Porthpean Golf Club is the home of golf in mid-Cornwall. This warm and friendly club has a challenging course, with the front nine holes set in parkland, whilst the back nine have spectacular views over St Austell Bay. Clubhouse facilities are open to all, so even if you don’t fancy a round you can enjoy a glass of something chilled at the 19th hole. Walkers are also well catered for in this area with plenty of stunning walks in both directions along the South West Coast Path. To the north, there’s a great circular walk that is of both historical and literary interest. It starts at Polkerris and takes you via Gribbin Head and on to follow part of the Saints’ Way – a 27-mile, early Christian pilgrimage route that stretches from Fowey to Padstow. Look out for the Celtic cross before returning to Polkerris. Head south along the cliffs and you’ll soon reach the long stretch of sand at Pentewan; beyond you can detour inland for a visit to the Lost Gardens of Heligan or continue to the harbour village of Mevagissey. If these kind of outdoor adventures appeal, and you have always dreamed of living life on the coast, then we would encourage a viewing at The Courtyard at Duporth.

South west electrical retailer HBH Woolacotts has taken a pragmatic approach to recent lockdowns and has invested in its retail business to ensure it comes through the pandemic in the best possible condition.
D
espite having to shut its nine stores, the Bude-based company was able to trade online and over the phones throughout the pandemic as well as continuing with the in-home delivery, installation and repair services for customers. However, in addition to this Woolacotts took the time to invest heavily in parts of the business to try and future-proof and minimise future downtime, the biggest project being a large scale refurbishment to the St Austell superstore. Director Chris Hemmerle says: “We’ve used the time to complete a couple of major shop improvements including a big refurbishment in the St Austell shop which would have taken out half the shop and caused significant disruption if we were open. It's been a three-month project, but the lockdown has been the perfect time to do this albeit unplanned. We’re confident in the future and excited that we’ll be reopening in St Austell with an exciting new look store.” The St Austell store has undergone a substantial remodelling and as part of the refurbishment, the 18,000sqft superstore at Gover Road is now also home to Cornwall’s first and only Sony Centre and Panasonic Store. Chris says: “We’re delighted that brands such as Panasonic and Sony have invested in

the store, in our business and in Cornwall and it will be a real positive for customers to be able to see a full range of products in the very best environment.” The new look store also includes a dedicated LG Shop-in-shop, a vastly improved audio section including a larger wireless audio space for brands such as Sonos, Bose and Yamaha, as well as a Premium Hi-Fi room which also includes a Dolby Atmos Home Theatre area. “Its been nine years since we first opened in St Austell and as technology moves on and product categories change we need to keep the shop up to date,” says Chris. “We’re hopeful that the changes we’ve just made will make the shop more interesting and relevant for customers for the next nine years!” As well as the refurbishment in St Austell, HBH Woolacotts also undertook a number of other projects aimed at making the business more sustainable and reducing the impact the business had on the environment. These include; New Cardboard Bailer: a new bailing machine was added to the in-house recycling plant to improve the capacity to bail and ultimately recycle waste packaging. Woolacotts aims to recycle all waste packaging that is recyclable and not send any to landfill. The new machine vastly improves the overall capacity and means the business now has separate machines for cardboard, polystyrene and plastic – the resulting bailed waste is sent to local recycling centres for processing and ultimately re-use.
Solar Panels: as part of improvements across the business, solar panels have been added to suitable roofs where possible to reduce the company’s overall carbon footprint. Paperless Systems: significant time has been spent developing and improving the IT systems with the long-term goal of a paperless system and one that can improve communication with customers, particularly on deliveries and field work. Chris says: “Unlike the original lockdowns where there was a lot more uncertainty we felt that this lockdown was the perfect time to improve our business for projects that would have otherwise caused disruption. We’re confident in the future for both our business and the local economy and as such we’re committed to investing in and improving our business while also reducing our environmental footprint and the impact our products and services have.”

SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF Cornish Cabinet & Joinery Co is a family run business that’s driven by quality.
S
ABOVE Crafted in Cornwall, built to last
pecialising in handmade furniture, specialist joinery and pet furniture, and with more than 40 years’ experience in high-end woodwork products, Cornish Cabinet & Joinery Co is led by Darren and William Draycott. They believe that anything British made is something to be proud of, and based in the historic Roundhouse in Par – built in 1874, designed by Sir Samuel Morton Peto – they’re incredibly proud to say that their furniture is made right here in Cornwall. So how did it all begin? Spanning two generations and incorporating highly specialised craftsmanship, as well as an in-depth design process, Darren and William believe strongly in the championing of traditional knowledge and skills. Darren gained much experience as an engineer’s pattern maker – a highly skilled trade that has since all but disappeared with the advent of modern fabrication techniques. William’s experience lies in artistry and furniture design, having been employed for many years working for a high-end Bristol based kitchen retailer. Together, they realised that their skills complemented one another perfectly, as did their shared passion for bespoke, beautiful and highquality furniture, and so it was that the company was born. “We began by talking about being inspired by the Cornish landscape, but it goes beyond that,” explains William. “We take the inspiration for colours and styles from the changing shades of the seasons, with the Cornish countryside, beaches, rivers
and more giving us ever-changing moods to work with. The natural element of wood will always play a part in our design ethos, as will the historical and cultural surroundings we work within.” If it’s your kitchen you’re thinking of updating you’ll find a carefully curated range of styles and finishes available from elegant traditional shakers to sleek and contemporary handleless designs. The company’s design process promises to ensure that you’re provided with the best possible layout, taking into consideration your personal likes, dislikes, and tastes that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing. The same process applies to bedrooms too, and as William explains: “We are happy to guide you in choosing style, colour and material. We offer samples and visualisations to help you choose, and will always offer guidance when needed.” Whether you’re updating your bedroom or injecting new life into your kitchen, if you’re looking for a bespoke solution that’s made to the highest standard – for a realistic price – then Cornish Cabinet & Joinery Co comes highly recommended.
DID YOU KNOW? Cornish Cabinet & Joinery Co’s rustic wooden dog crates are hand-crafted and painted to order, designed to complement the company’s existing ranges of kitchen and bedroom furniture.

BRING THE SPA HOME Create your very own wild-spa experience at home, with a wood-fired hot tub from Kernow Springs. ABOVE What could be better than your own outdoor spa experience?
T
he past year has been defined by time spent at home, and for those who enjoy the great outdoors, that has meant reconnecting with their gardens and appreciating the private space and tranquillity that they afford. With summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to capitalise on this, and what better way than with your own outdoor spa experience? One of the south west’s leading suppliers of wood-fired hot tubs ernow Springs can provide spas for any location. Imagine being able to wander outside and into your own Wild Spa experience, with hot tubs, woodfired barrel saunas with separate changing rooms and off-grid hot showers), and even a traditional Scandinavian cold ‘drench’ bucket. “ eing handcrafted from the finest timbers mean they look stunning and can really complement the ambience and look of your garden,” explains Kernow Springs owner, Martin Dean. What’s more, being heated by burning wood means that no electricity is required, not to mention that there are no noisy pumps, or the fact that only minimal water treatment is necessary. This makes them a more natural choice than their chlorinated, plastic counterparts.
Not only is a permanent Wild Spa installation a dream come true for many contemplating their perfect garden sanctuary, it can also add value to your home. Not only that, if it’s a holiday let in which you’re having the spa installed, it’s sure to help secure more bookings year-round! So what of the Kernow Springs service? Chris and Annie of Calstock, who spotted an advert for Kernow Springs in Cornwall Living, have not looked back since having their woodland spa installed. “We can’t praise the service enough and the end product is a dream come true!” Well there you have it! This is a very busy time for Kernow Springs so if you would like to find out more and see these beautiful tubs in action, be sure to call ahead and arrange an appointment at the showroom at Padstow’s Trevisker Garden Center. Take it from us: if you’re in the market for the ultimate at-home spa experience, you will not be disappointed.

ounded in 2018, AirTemp Industrial Services has been at the forefront of the refrigeration industry ever since. Crewed by a team of engineers with decades of experience between them, working at all levels of the industry, AirTemp is dedicated to providing you with the best solutions for your needs. It could be a large scale blast freezer, an industrial catering refrigerator, or an air conditioning unit. Whatever it is, AirTemp can help. Led by Will Kindell, all of the AirTemp engineers are fully ualified and F-gas registered, ensuring they comply with all environmental regulations – including the appropriate removal and disposal of refrigerants. “We’re constantly revising our knowledge,” says Will, “and keeping up to date with the latest practises, safety and modernisation within the industry.” This is good to know, especially if you’re a busy independent restaurant or shop and need somebody you can rely on to handle your refrigeration needs responsibly. What’s more, Will and co have now secured a £10M insurance liability protection, which gives them even greater access to the catering sectors and other customers who require it.
As a case in point, Will informs us that he and the team have worked on the oyal avy u iliary Fleet handling the ongoing maintenance and servicing of its refrigeration equipment – across all 13 vessels. Impressive! What all of this means is that, whatever your business and whatever the scale of your needs, if you’re looking for a company you can rely on to handle the supply, maintenance, servicing and repairs of your equipment – new or old – AirTemp Industrial Services have got you covered.

LOOKING Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems take a look back on one of their favourite projects to date.
K
estrel Specialist Handrail Systems has been helping clients in Cornwall add the all-important finishing touches to their properties since 2013 – touches that make the difference between a nice home, and one that becomes the envy of friends and family. Creating a seemingly endless range of beautiful bespoke products and fittings for the home, from balcony handrails to custom-made furniture, Kestrel understands the need – especially here in Cornwall – for homeowners to make the most of inside-outside living. Be it capitalising on sweeping coastal views with a stainless steel and glass balustrade, or complementing your home’s rural surroundings with materials that blend seamlessly with them whilst allowing you to immerse yourself in the outdoors, Kestrel can help. As we catch up with the team ahead of this year’s Cornwall Home and Garden Show, Katie Grant – who owns the company along with her husband, Bruce – throws back fondly to one of their first pro ects the finished results of which you can see pictured. “Looking back to 2015, it’s still one of our favourites,” she says. “The customer was en oyable to work with they were looking for something a little different and were open to ideas.”
Overlooking the Fal river, towards St Anthony Lighthouse, this particular home benefits from the most incredible views and it was these that the owner wished to capitalise on. Katie, Bruce and the team were able to conceptualise and build a fabulous stainless steel and glass balustrade system which, whilst safely ‘fencing’ the boundaries of their client’s decking area, in no way detracted from the view. If anything, it enhanced it, and Katie explains that the owner was so happy that he later commissioned Kestrel for a second balcony, which she says “was as en oyable as the first . Recognising that Cornwall has countless unique properties for which ‘off the shelf’ solutions simply won’t do, Katie, Bruce and the Kestrel team approach each individual pro ect on its own merits ensuring that each and every client is left better able capitalise on Cornwall’s coveted outdoor lifestyle.

GO SOLAR FOR SUMMER With summer just around the corner, there couldn’t be a better time to go solar.
N
ot only a great way to protect your home or business from rising energy bills, did you know that with a solar PV installation, you can sell unused energy back into the grid for up to, and over, 20 years? Firmly among the UK’s most popular renewable energy solutions, solar PV – or solar photovoltaic – has been readily available to home and business for a number of years, however recent drops in price have made it far more accessible to homeowners. This means that more people than ever are switching to solar to protect themselves against hikes in energy prices. It works by converting the energy in the sun’s rays into the electricity used to power appliances. Energy generated is distributed to appliances around the home that are drawing power, and any unused energy can either be stored, or sold back to the grid. The latter is a great way to offset installation costs and as mentioned before, solar PV homes can expect to generate income from their energy supply for more than two decades! So who can help you make the switch? One of Cornwall and the south west’s leading providers is GreenGenUK. Since opening in 2011, the team have built up a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to the consultation, design and installation of solar PV solutions, varying in size from small domestic installations, to large-scale commercial projects. As a result, they can offer impartial advice on renewable installations – advice that’s offered on a case-by-case basis, ensuring it’s tailored to the unique requirements of your home or commercial project. If you do choose GreenGenUK, your project will begin with a free-of-charge, no obligation

survey – conducted so that the team can better understand your needs. This also allows them to answer any questions you may have around both solar and other renewable energy alternatives. From here, they will draw up a detailed and accurate quote, specifying the components that will be used before breaking down the financial and environmental benefit of the system. nd due to the fast-changing nature of the solar industry, they are always happy to requote, should your requirements suddenly change. But just don’t take our word for it! On the reen en website you’ll find a string of stellar testimonials from happy clients on the Case Studies page, and it’s fair to say that if you’re already contemplating making the switch to renewable energy, you’ll quickly see the benefit of booking your free no-obligation survey with the GreenGen team.

T
he Cornish word for ‘calm’, ‘serene’, or ‘peaceful’, ‘Hebask’ was the clear choice when Ross Elliott and Charlie Wingfield came to name their business. “Our aim is to create homes, not just houses,“ Ross explains. “Whether that be the home of a business or a family, our strengths lie in undertstanding the requirements for a building to successfully work for the client how they move and ow through the building and the intention for the individual spaces; what they hope to achieve within the budget, and how we can deliver this in a realistic timeframe.” With the objective of creating a progressive company that can incorporate a e ible and energetic attitude to the building process, Charlie and Ross adopt a creative approach towards construction, focusing on tradition and innovation, utilising renewable energy, and bringing sustainable practises very much to the forefront. Their modern and positive approach to bringing projects to life is certainly worth considering. “We deal with a wide spectrum of construction, residential and commercial projects, and have recently completed a refurbishment at the Bedruthan Steps Hotel and Spa. From new-builds to renovations and historical restorations,” Charlie elaborates, “we have worked alongside archaeologists and ecologists on very challenging projects over the years. You have to thrive on challenges to complete these projects successfully.” Their aim, along with their trusted team of skilled tradesmen, is to create, or bring back to life, unique properties that are sympathetic to their surroundings. So, how can they help you? They can manage and execute a wide variety of projects, covering anything from new builds to heritage building restorations and full renovations. Hebask also have a network of architects who they regularly work with and recommend, if you are at the planning stage. As Ross explains: “Having a contractor
look at your first draft drawings is a very e cient way to start the process of building and blending the experience of the architect, quantity surveyor and the contractor can save you thousands pre-build. We consult with all the engineers to ensure we have a practical and sensible approach to a project pre-construction, to either save on costs or aid the schedule.” The Hebask team is made up of a carefully selected and dedicated group of highly skilled, professional tradesmen. Between them, they bring a wealth of experience in all aspects of construction to each project they’re a part of. “Our aim is to enjoy the journey of building at each stage of the project, we like to create a working environment in which everyone feels valued, from the labourer to the carpenter. This is how the team can produce excellent results which we are able to deliver to our clients,” says Charlie. But it’s their approach to client communication that really shines; often it can be easy to feel ‘out of the loop’. Not so with Hebask. “With a tried and tested management system,” Ross tells us, “our objective is to make the client feel completely connected to the project on a weekly basis, by providing progress reports, photos and up-to-date financial summaries. This approach keeps you, the client, at the forefront of your project, ensuring the end results re ect what you set out to achieve. Don’t just take our word for it though; head to the Hebask website and you’ll find a stream of glowing testimonials. To put it simply, if you’re undertaking a construction project of any size, getting in touch with Hebask Homes comes highly recommended!

A BETTER WAY CTC Holiday Let Waste Collections offer a hassle-free, conscientious and flexible solution to the management of your holiday home waste.
ABOVE, RIGHT The complete waste management cycle from one company
W
e think that anybody who owns a holiday home here in Cornwall will agree: making your guests’ stay in the Duchy as hassle-free as possible is near, if not at, the top of the list of priorities. A close second, and one that’s never been more on the minds of the modern holidaymaker, is sustainability. If you’re able to achieve both, chances are that your guests will remember their time with you for years to come. Not only that, they’re much more likely to keep coming back for more. Nowadays, there are plenty of ways in which you can tick these fundamental boxes, but one that’s often overlooked is waste management. This is where CTC Waste comes in. Running their own, fully licensed waste management facility near Truro, with a large section dedicated to holiday lets, at CTC, 100% of waste is recycled. That’s right. Absolutely nothing goes to landfill. If you’re the owner of a holiday let, this is a guarantee that you can pass onto your guests – something to shout about when it comes to marketing, and a way in which to appeal to increasingly conscientious holidaymakers who are aware of their carbon footprint. So how does it work? Firstly, you’re only charged for waste that’s collected. This means no annual fee and no contract to sign. Secondly, collections are booked online, and in fact, CTC’s online booking system is very easy to use, with confirmations sent directly to your email. Once booked, CTC Waste will come to your property on the arranged collection day and you can rest assured that your holiday let will be rubbish-free when your new guests arrive.
Bookings aren’t the only thing made simple by CTC, and here’s another USP that you can pass onto your guests: instead of taking the time to separate waste and recycling into varicoloured bags, all waste, including recycling, goes into the same black bag, and CTC Waste will separate it for you. This offers the simplest form of waste collection for all. The team’s waste management facility is fully equipped to manage this process, and after your bags have been collected, you’ll receive an invoice that doubles up as a ‘Waste Transfer Note’ – a legal document which completes your duty of care on all collected waste. To put it all quite simply, if you're the owner of a holiday let and want to ensure your waste is managed responsibly, in a way that's as hassle-free as possible for both you and your guests, then CTC Waste come highly recommended.

Initially, there was an open-cast quarry on the site, but some 300 years ago the miners started to go underground too, resulting in the formation of three hand-dug caverns of cathedral proportions. During a tour here you will go about 150 metres into the hillside and below ground. From the first chamber, which is fully accessible, there is a ight of steps down to the other two chambers. In the lower chambers you will find the underground lake with its crystalclear, blue-green water. The caverns are at a constant 10°C underground, so a jumper and sensible footwear are recommended! Carngla e is also home to five recorded species of bat, some of whom sleep and hibernate in the unlit areas, and whilst it is a wonderful sight to behold them, visitors are asked to switch off any ash settings on cameras and phones, so they are not disturbed. Delving deeper into the history of this site, we learn that during the Second World War the oyal avy used the first chamber to store its supply of rum for its base at
DID YOU KNOW?
Devonport in Plymouth. Local folklore has it that you could smell the rum at the junction with the A38 – about a mile away! In December 2002, the chamber was converted into an auditorium with seating for 400. Fast forward to now, and the slate walls and roof form a stunning backdrop for events of all kinds. A truly unique performance venue, due to the shape and height of the cavern, the acoustics are simply astounding, and in fact the venue has been acclaimed by many of the local and international artists who have performed here. With a fully licensed bar open on concert nights, and a catering unit in the gardens serving snack food at most events, be sure to keep an eye out for 2021 concert dates. But be quick – tickets are sure to sell out fast!

KNOW YOUR
HISTORY! Extensive collections reveal a fascinating insight into times gone by, at Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life.
I
f you’re staying near Helston, you’re well set to discover the best that Cornwall has to offer. Indeed, just a short scoot up the coast, in the market town of Helston you’ll find the Museum of Cornish Life, offering a fascinating insight into the area’s rich tapestry of history and heritage. The building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837, with two separate buildings – one for butter and eggs, the other for the meat market. Today, it retains the original sloping oor which adds to the authenticity of experience as you wander back in time to the Cornish days of yore. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost in the disaster, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. Head inside and you’ll immediately find that the museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers agriculture, local trades and industries, as well as law and order, town history, home
life, toys, sporting equipment, gardening, transport and health and leisure activities. Indeed, the sporting display features the famous Bob Fitzsimmons who, heralding from Helston, made boxing history as the sport’s first three-division world champion. The Victorian Classroom, meanwhile, provides a fascinating (and, indeed, eye opening!) insight for children, to see what life was like for pupils all those years ago. The museum boasts the best costume collections of the south west, also offering a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, meaning that there’s usually something new to be found every time you visit. With a team that firmly believes in learning as a life-long process if you’re staying in or near Helston and hoping to brush up on your Cornish history, a trip to Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life comes highly recommended.

aunched in 2019, August Rock Adventures takes thrill seekers, ocean adventurers and nature lovers out across Cornwall’s stunning waters. Your trip will be on the seven-metre igid In atable Boat (RIB), Harbinger, powered by a Mercury Verado Supercharged 200HP outboard engine, reaching exhilarating top speeds of 35 knots (about 40 mph) and with a range of 150 miles. This range allows trips of two hours or more, meaning guests get to reach some excellent, out-of-the-way snorkelling and swimming spots. The boat is hired for exclusive use by your family or group of up to six people and we can think of nothing better than being skippered across one of Cornwall’s stunning bays before anchoring off the beach for a sunbathe and then a swim ashore for a cooling ice cream or a decadent cream tea. Harbinger takes guests on tailor-made trips along Cornwall’s south coast. As each trip is bespoke to the booking, you can choose where you would like to go – weather permitting of course. Favourites include exploring the coves and beaches around the Lizard peninsula or searching for seals, dolphins, and minke whales. And in spring, you may be lucky enough to encounter a basking shark up to 20 miles offshore. Trips start from Helford Passage on the Helford River, from where it’s only a short cruise to explore Falmouth harbour and the surrounding bays.
There really is no better way to enjoy Cornwall than from a boat. You can leave all of your cares behind, as well as your car and the crowds, and enjoy the peace and beauty of the Cornish coast from a different angle. Who knows, if the conditions are suitable then you could even try your hand at being the captain, driving the RIB in the tranquil waters of Falmouth Bay or the Helford River. August Rock Adventures operates the only Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) licenced RIB along the south west Cornish coast that is dedicated solely to single group adventures. With conservation, and the safe interaction with wildlife of extreme importance to the team, they are proud to be an accredited member of WiSe, the UK's national training scheme for minimising disturbance to marine wildlife. NURTURE BY NATURE
Over the course of the pandemic, not only has Kernow Adventure Park’s Aquapark expanded, so too have its outdoor facilities.
D
espite the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, Kernow Adventure Park has nevertheless adapted. Working hard over the winter season, the team have been busy laying turf, concreting, and prepping for the season ahead, creating new outdoor areas for spectators, and picnic spots for participants to enjoy after their session. They have also increased the size of the Aquapark, which is now bigger and better than ever before! Putting risks into consideration, Alex and co have now built a beach-like effect for customers to walk in and out of the water, instead of using a dock. This is for the customers who aren’t as confident to ump in allowing them to get used to the temperature of the water. “Our approach to outdoor adventure has changed,” explains Alex, “as we are accommodating for all ages and all abilities. This means we’ve had to adapt, as those not as strong or new to the water, we’ve had to reassure and help them feel as comfortable and safe as they can. We want people to feel reconnected with nature, and be able to enjoy the adventurous side. It’s all about making sure customers feel fulfilled and leave with their expectations met. “Our vision is to create an enjoyable, but safe surrounding here at the park,” Alex continues, “making sure that not only are our in-session customers enjoying themselves, but also spectators. Here at Kernow Adventure Park we have adapted to
this different lifestyle, and have created new rules and restrictions for people to still enjoy themselves. We’ve put in place a rule of six on the Aquapark, and made sure everyone is sticking to social distancing measures. With these new rules,” says Alex, “our customers have felt safe, but also enjoy themselves!” Activities here can be enjoyed from the age of six. This includes paddle boarding around the tranquil lake, jumping into the water off the Aquapark, riding a wakeboard around the quarry, or feeling the adrenaline on the Ringo. These activities are for everyone, from total beginners, to experts, and Alex and his crew offer coaching and a brief before each session. At Kernow Adventure Park, the team works hard to make sure customers understand the rules, so everyone can enjoy the activities. On arrival, you feel welcomed and relaxed, due in part to the beautiful landscape, but also the approachability of the staff. And when the day comes to an end, Alex explains: “Customers always leave with a smile on their face.” Along with his team, Alex goes above and beyond to make sure everybody enjoys their time at Kernow Adventure Park, ensuring their expectations are reached to the highest level.

the artisan
Challenge drives creative thinking, and the past year has been nothing but inspiring for the team at Jo Downs.
ABOVE The latest work from Jo's team of talented creatives
A
nyone who loves Cornwall will be familiar with Jo Downs Handmade Glass galleries, but with the topsyturvy trading patterns of the last year it was the ideal time to reinvigorate Jo’s galleries. With many months of online-only purchasing, the team recognised a spark of interest in unique individual art pieces. This trend has stimulated the creation of the all new Artisan Collection, now available in St Ives, Launceston and Jo’s newest gallery in Sunningdale, Berkshire. Guided by Jo’s ingenuity and imagination the studio team have created a series of wall mounted artworks in dazzling colours and exquisite handcrafted detail. These limitededition designs are available alongside each gallery's e clusive offering of shoaling fish installations in unique colourways. “I love a challenge,” says Jo, “and that has meant experimentation and investment in time and space for creative thinking. Once upon a time I was just one artist with one little kiln. Now I have an amazing team of skilled glass makers who have really delivered during this extraordinary year, and honestly it’s a wonderful feeling being able to continue creating such exquisite art pieces with an inspired team.”
“My studio team are the lifeblood of this company,” says Jo. “Opportunities in the arts are few and far between at present in the UK, and so much talent goes untapped. We try very hard to offer opportunities to those who show commitment to a career in fusedglass, and that has resulted in a brilliant, multi-skilled team of makers with incredible potential to e pand the field. Since opening the first o owns allery in Padstow in 2005, Jo and team's displays have become a real icon of the Cornish high street, with windows that showcase all the dazzling colours of the coast. “I’m so proud of that and what the studio team has created,” says Jo. “They’ve allowed us to showcase large-scale work, which are now also featured on our website so our customers can celebrate the beauty of Cornwall across the UK.”

9. PADSTOW GALLERY Breakers by Jo Ellis
Jo’s expressive charcoals are the basis of her work she finds the freedom of drawing produces unexpected, exciting results which she then translates into paint. Working in acrylic, oils and mi ed media she finds inspiration and energy in organic shapes: “My work is all about experiencing a place, not about representing it; my emotions and reactions to where I am and what I am looking at are an important part of creating a painting – something unexpected often reveals itself in the process.” Jo’s latest exhibition focuses

A GREAT
BRITISH TRADITION National Cream Tea Day is almost here!
T
he cream tea – a quintessential British tradition that has been enjoyed for decades – is, for many, the ultimate foodie celebration of the summer months. So, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a whole day dedicated to this delicious delicacy! Taking place on Friday 25th June, National Cream Tea Day is set to bring the nation together in a bid to fundraise for some highly deserving causes. Now in its seventh year, the day is organised by Rodda’s Cornish Clotted Cream and Tiptree; together, the jam and cream experts donate up to 50,000 portions of jam and cream every year through joint organisation, The Cream Tea Society, which supports fundraisers and charities to put on their own cream tea events. To date, this has helped to raise more than £680,000 for hundreds of UK charities! Of course, current restrictions have meant that these events have had to be cancelled or postponed, however after the success of last year’s virtual event, Rodda’s and Tiptree are once again hosting this year’s celebrations online, allowing everybody to come together through the power of social media and enjoy a much-needed cream tea. Taking place on 25th June, the day will involve competitions, virtual bake-a-longs, recipe sharing and simple hints and tips to
create the perfect cream tea. Funds raised will be used to support The Wave Project, Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, Mind Essex, Hospitality Action, and The Royal British Legion. Participants can donate to these charities by visiting The Cream Tea Society website donations page, or by donating themselves to a charity of their choosing. “This year, more than ever, we want National Cream Tea Day to be a feelgood celebration,” says Nicholas Rodda, 5th generation of the Rodda family and Managing Director. “Taking place at the end of what have been a di cult months for the country, it’s the perfect time to support those organisations that have not been able to fundraise due to the pandemic.” So, whether you serve your scone with am or cream first everybody is invited to join in to raise funds for a very worthy cause. To be a part of the festivities or to find out more about running your own charitable cream tea event, simply head to www.creamteasociety.co.uk.

g n i d e e FYOUR SENSES Poké Food takes ‘eating well’ to a whole new level.
P
oké Food in Porthleven operates on the belief that, if every one of your senses is well fed, then you will feel satisfied. y this they mean that if a dish has crunch, softness, sharpness, sourness, sweetness bitterness smoothness saltiness savoury and spice, then it is truly balanced and your palate will have all its bo es ticked. The idea was hatched during a conversation with Serene Husseini who just so happens to be a health coach, personal trainer and nutritionist with over a decade’s e perience. They got to talking about the frustrations and hurdles that we all face when it comes to getting excellent nutrition, while still wanting to eat foods that are bursting with avour and a feast for the eyes. The nutritional foundation of a Pok owl is a balanced compilation of essential macro and micro nutrients in sensible quantities, that can be adjusted with ease taste delicious and therefore this seemed like the obvious template. The team at Pok Food approached Serene to oin them in building a wellness brand that incorporates their ethos that the food you eat is more than fuel. “I umped at the chance to collaborate with the guys at Poké Food because I knew that they understood that great health can be a complicated process involving mind and body. ur goal was and is to create an experience that feeds you well, in more ways than ust diet alone because great health is an inside ob. eprivation diets work against our natural food instincts. If we
limit and restrict foods we label those foods as bad, and then our distorted relationship with food is born. Feeding into a lasting cycle of uncomfortable and unhealthy eating habits. Health is a habit so it is important to create habits we can sustain for life. Poké Food provides nutritionally balanced, prepared meals and conscious catering targeted at those who want to choose mindful eating and health. They believe that when you know what you are eating is good for you, you can en oy it even more. They also believe that your time is precious and so is your health. All food is prepared daily in their kitchen and delivered directly to you. Their products never contain artificial additives or preservatives so they maintain their fresh natural taste. They trust in that when life and food are positively linked it cannot be about one or the other. s well as providing meal prep for those in training and on their weight management journey, Poké Food clients include powerlifters, competitive cross-fitters and those following a guided and bespoke nutrition and exercise plan for weight-loss and better health. Whether you’re an athlete in training or are simply hoping to come out of the latest lockdown with a healthier approach to life, then Poké Food can help. very popular activity, since it was first introduced by St Columb otary Club this multi-distance one-day cycling sportive will be the charity’s first real event since last arch. The healthcare charity took it over in but had to cancel last year due to the pandemic. Scheduled to take place this uly with the support of title sponsor Clive itchell Cycles it is proving a hit with cyclists desperate to get out and face a real-life challenge. There are routes for everybody from the complete beginner to the hardened cyclist with distances from to miles. ne of those already signed up is Henry ewis from Truro. keen hockey player he took up road cycling in the last year: “When Covid took over team sports were put on hold and I wanted something more interesting than running to keep me busy. I'm still really en oying it and decided to buy a bike that’s far more advanced than my actual ability. I work in the HS mental health service and the last year has been an absolute rollercoaster. It sounds hideously clich but cycling gives me a bit of headspace after a di cult day.
Henry says he was talked in to the Sportive by friends yan and le who will compete with him: “I was keeping fit for my wedding to ess in pril and we wanted to set ourselves a bit of a challenge but were under no illusion that over miles would probably end in some long-term in uries and embarrassment. is a stretch but we've got a few months to train Henry says he has close hockey friends who’ve received support from Cornwall Hospice Care in the past. “It's a fantastic charity and a large part of ustifying the pain of over miles and ft of climbs. I will be absolutely delighted if I can finish without breaking the bike or my own legs. miles in itself would be fine in most other parts of the country but Cornwall has a uni ue ability to throw hill after hill at you and I think they've fully utilised that on the planned route.
