This issue of Cornwall Living, we take you on a delicious journey through Cornwall’s thriving foodie scene. The Duchy has become something of a culinary destination over recent years and is now celebrated as the gastronomic go-to for the discerning gourmand. From freshly caught seafood to artisan bakers and world-class restaurants, there’s food to be found at every turn. Turn to page 15 and join Jamie Crocker on a road trip around some of Cornwall’s finest bistros, restaurants and hostelries, with a few breweries and distilleries thrown in for good measure.

We also take a deeper dive into some of the stories behind the region’s food revolution, meeting the chefs who are elevating ingredients and crafting dishes that showcase the bounty of the land and sea with creativity and flair. Take chef Jude Kereama for example (page 48), who waxes lyrical about the sheer and unadulterated indulgence that is a long Sunday lunch, created from the finest ingredients and enjoyed with friends. Or join chef Tom Hannon (page 55) as he looks forward to being on stage at the year’s Chefs’ Theatre as part of the Truro Food Festival, as well as celebrating a decade at the helm of The Rising Sun, one of the city’s finest gastro pubs. But Cornwall’s foodie scene isn’t just about dining. We also discover those hidden gems that are the Duchy’s distillers, serving up superior shots for us all to enjoy. Copperfish Distillery brings all the cocktails on page 51

This issue, we are also delighted to bring you our bi-annual wedding supplement. If you are looking to tie the knot in our beautiful county then from page 35, you’ll find a host of inspiration for your big day. If you’re dreaming of a coastal wedding, where you can wander through sub-tropical gardens for those all-important photographs down on the beach, then St Michaels Resort (page 41) has all the elements when it comes to saying ‘I do’ – amazing location, beautiful food and a gorgeous spa, all topped off with stunning accommodation and attentive service. And the icing on the cake? The Natural Cake Company (page 42) is where confectionery dreams come true!

It was a privilege to meet our Cornwall Living 150th competition winner last week. Emma and I spent a happy hour chatting about the many wonderful prizes she won. It just proves that you have to be in it to win it, so be sure to enter our latest competitions as featured on page 23

Bespoke plywood kitchens

Made Ply Hand design and build beautiful bespoke kitchens from their workshop in Perranporth.

Owner-maker James, has used his experience of design and furniture-making to create a range of premium contemporary plywood kitchens to perfectly fit your space.

As the name suggests, Plywood is at the core of his business, and forms the base of all the kitchens. Plywood is made by bonding thin layers of wood together at alternating grains of 90°, which gives the material superior strength and stability. This method of ‘cross bonding’ eliminates shrinkage, warping and expansion and provides the perfect base for his kitchens. As well as being incredibly strong, these individual wood layers in plywood create a beautiful striped end grain, which is incorporated into the kitchen design and form part of the aesthetic.

When you work with Made Ply Hand, you will receive a personal one-to-one service from start to finish. James will be on the end of the phone if you have any questions and will work closely with you to achieve the kitchen of your dreams.

Born in the county, James is a proud Cornishman and uses local suppliers wherever possible. By choosing to buy local and have Made Ply Hand make your bespoke plywood kitchen, you will be supporting Cornish businesses, the local economy, suppliers and their employees too.

We suggest that you make an appointment to visit their new showroom, you’ll be impressed.

A Cornish culinary ROAD TRIP

Buckle up and engage those gears because we’re about to embark on a delectable journey that will take us across Cornwall.

Ready and waiting for you

Forget Google Maps; our navigation tools are our taste buds, guiding us from one mouth-watering halt to another, from Penzance to St Breward. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or just looking to escape the usual supermarket suppers, join us as we uncover some of the most tantalising spots in Cornwall, one bite at a time.

A serving of joy at the

Our journey begins in Penzance at the Barbican Bistro (barbicanbistro.com), where small plates, with a focus on fresh fish, are certainly worth fuelling up with before we begin your epicurean odyssey. This quirky little spot, situated on Barbican Lane, serves up such tasty treats as pickled anchovies marinated in chilli and lemon along with John Dory with asparagus and beurre blanc. Pair these offerings with a glass of their wine, beer or cider and we’re starting our road trip in the right frame of mind that even the weather can’t dampen. Just remember to nominate a driver before you head off along the A30 as the beverages en route will be hard to resist!

Next, we cruise into Falmouth, where Nourish at St Michaels Resort (stmichaelsresort.com/dine/nourish) offers a dining experience that’s all about balance – mind, body and palate. Picture Cornish tapas for starters, brioche and shawarma. The main courses range from sustainably caught fish to organic vegetables that speak volumes of their garden origins. A bustling cafe atmosphere by day transitions seamlessly into a cool, contemporary, social and relaxed bar restaurant by night – it’s a pity we have to head off before it kicks off.

Top down and still basking in the coastal air, our next stop is Swanpool Beach’s very own gem, Hooked on the Rocks (hookedontherocksfalmouth. com). Specialising in seafood such as Falmouth Bay scallops with roe butter and seaweed pangrattato, and wild prawns with garlic butter, ‘nduja, lime and fresh herbs, this location will

LEARN THE CULINARY ART

And for those who enjoy prepping as well as consuming:

Philleigh Way (philleighway. co.uk), where you can roll up your sleeves and immerse yourself in hands-on culinary adventures, learning the secrets behind creating delicious dishes with flair.

Rick Steins Cookery School (shop.rickstein.com/ products/rick-stein-one-daycookery-course) in Padstow is a culinary playground where you can master seafood dishes under the guidance of expert chefs.

St Ives Cookery School (stivescookeryschool.co.uk) offers dynamic classes where you can hone your culinary skills while enjoying breathtaking ocean vistas.

Sheer indulgence at the Penventon

have you ‘hooked’ with its foodie offerings. What’s more the view of the shore isn’t just a backdrop – it’s part of the experience. Each bite pairs perfectly with the calming sound of waves breaking against the rocks below.

Retracing our tyre tracks we drive to Penryn, and having roared past the golden arches without a second glance we find ourselves at Situ Café (situcafe.co.uk), a place where comfort meets cuisine in contemporary coalescence. This café thrives on the concept of heritage food that is derived from headchef Sham’s Ugandan Indian background & culture – a coming together of traditional Gujarati dishes with Ugandan influences.

The ambiance is cosy urban chic warmed to smooth perfection, enticing patrons to linger a little longer over a house or feature espresso – it’s just such a shame that we have to hit the road again.

However, waving goodbye to the coast and rolling onwards to Redruth, we make a pitstop at the ever-charming Penventon Hotel (penventon.co.uk). Here, dining is an affair fit for royals, albeit ones with a penchant for cutting loose now and then.

The menu combines the sumptuousness of classic European dishes with local Cornish twists. Sit down to 12-hour braised pork porchetta or tagliatelle pasta incorporating

the chef’s flavour of the day. And the wine list? Sophisticated enough to require a manual – thankfully, the sommeliers are on hand to translate.

A slight detour to Treleigh brings us to the Inn For All Seasons (innforallseasons.co.uk/ restaurant), a pub that boasts a spacious restaurant that can cater for family and friends or for couples who wish to experience quiet dining in a booth for two. The name doesn’t lie; no matter when you visit, there’s always something delicious in season. Their famous carvery makes autumnal dining a real pleasure, with a summer menu that turns eating into a gourmet experience. ‘local’ is the key here – be it the ale or the impressive Sunday roast, it’s all crafted from local Cornish produce.

SIP AND SAVOUR

These we had to bypass but are worthy of mention:

Knightor Winery (knightor. com) offers delightful vineyard tours and tastings, providing a perfect sip of tranquillity and a taste of local passion.

Sharps Brewery (sharpsbrewery.co.uk) in Rock, has been crafting exceptional beers that epitomise the spirit of the British coast.

Copperfish Distillery (copperfishdistillery.co.uk) artfully blends tradition and innovation to create exquisite Cornish spirits that leave a lasting impression with every sip.

Pedal to the metal we forge a path to Cornwall’s only city, Truro. Pulling up outside The Rising Sun (therisingsuntruro. co.uk) we are ready to be greeted by an eclectic mix of old and new. This pub does not shy away from experimenting – expect dishes like west country duck, orange-glazed carrots, asparagus, parmentier potatoes and pomegranate jus, raising your regular pub grub into something worthy of a fanfare. In summer its garden offers a relaxed setting that’s perfect for an extended lunch (or several). Just when you think you’ve seen it all, their selection of craft gins is the perfect beverage to sip the afternoon away engaged in convivial conversation.

Wishing we were in a piece of Italian automobile exotica we capture a taste of Latinate romance in Wadebridge at Bellinis (bellinis.co.uk). As if stepping into a Roman trattoria, you’re greeted with intoxicating aromas of garlic, olive oil and simmering tomato sauces. The pasta dishes are works of art, as you’d expect, and the pizzas… well, why not try for yourself. Pair your meal with some classic Italian hospitality, and you’ll feel like you’re driving along the Amalfi coast with the top down!

At Rock, we clamber out of our vehicle, stretch our legs and ascend to the culinary splendour that is the Upper Deck (upperdeckrock. co.uk). This nautical-themed restaurant takes the sea-to-fork concept seriously, with their starters showcasing a broad representation that includes pan seared scallops, Porthilly mussels and Mediterranean style prawns. The view of the estuary adds an extra piquancy to the already perfect dishes, making this a dining experience that stays fresh in your memory long after the last morsel has vanished.

Venturing inland, St Tudy is home to the St Tudy Inn (sttudyinn.com) – what else? It’s a blended mix of the rustic and refined where everything comes together in a cosy refuge of bonhomie. This charming old country pub, is a welcoming sanctuary for foodies craving sophisticated dishes with a home-cooked touch. Their Sunday roasts are legendary, served with all the trimmings and a tincture of extra love. And if you’re lucky enough to visit on a Tuesday around 1pm level up your week with their

Two for Tuesday deal when you can choose any two lunch main courses for £20.

Our penultimate gastronomic pause is at St Breward’s Old Inn and Restaurant (theoldinnandrestaurant.co.uk), seated high up on Bodmin Moor. The snug bars, huge roaring log fires and sloping beamed ceilings, make this one of the country’s, let alone Cornwall’s, quintessential English pubs. The menu champions hearty, comforting dishes – from classic ploughman’s to signature steaks, with every item a gastronomic delight. Paired with a pint of local ale or a glass of smooth cider, it’s the perfect place to take stock before quickly descending off the moor to our last stop.

"It's been a bit of a difficult year for us as a family and this exciting news really lifted our spirits. My girls are looking forward to sharing the prizes with me. CARNE SIDE

Carne Side is a property located along the beautiful south Cornish coast, next to Carne Beach on the Roseland Peninsula. This property sits on a 0.4-acre plot and includes a 2,000-square-foot house with a terrace, sloping garden, parking and a double garage. Though requiring full renovation, it presents significant potential for redevelopment into a luxury beachside home. The property is sold with no chain and vacant possession.

Carne Beach, part of Gerrans Bay, is a peaceful, unspoiled stretch of golden sand, perfect for families and one of the few beaches in Cornwall that welcomes dogs all year-round. The adjoining Pendower Beach and nearby coastal footpaths add to the charm of this idyllic location.

Overlooking the beach is Nare Head, offering sweeping views and historic military landmarks.

The nearby village of Veryan, just a mile away, is known for its unique round houses and provides essential amenities, including a post office, primary school, pub and sports club. Truro, Cornwall’s only city, is only 12 miles away, offering more extensive shopping and transport links, including a mainline station to London Paddington. This property’s exceptional location, combined with its development potential, makes it a rare and exciting opportunity on the Roseland Peninsula.

The future

IS GREEN

As energy bills continue to rise and climate change concerns grow, more UK homeowners are looking for ways to take control of their energy use.

The solution? Solar power combined with battery storage. With today’s solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, you can generate electricity from your roof all year round and use it whenever you need it – even on those chilly winter nights!

From spring to autumn, solar panels can supply up to 90% of a home’s energy needs. But thanks to battery storage, you can save and store energy during the sunniest parts of the day, ensuring your home stays powered up 24/7. No longer do you need to worry about relying on the grid in the evening; your own stored solar energy has got you covered. Even during the shorter, darker winter months, solar combined with time-of-use or off-peak tariffs can significantly reduce your reliance on expensive grid energy. Now you can move energy around to create savings throughout the year, ensuring those hefty winter bills don't hit as hard.

At GreenGenUK, they specialise in creating tailored renewable energy systems, designing bespoke solutions that fit your home's specific needs. Their solar PV systems are more efficient than ever, and they can offer a variety of smart control options, allowing you to maximise both cost and carbon savings.

Even better, their systems can adapt as your energy profile changes, offering flexibility and long-term value.

Beyond financial benefits, certain advanced battery systems offer the added advantage of emergency backup protection. In the event of a grid outage, these systems automatically take over as your home's energy source. When paired with solar panels, they can be recharged using sunlight to keep your appliances running smoothly.

With the cost of installing solar and battery storage at an all-time low and energy prices set to rise, there’s never been a better time to invest in solar power. Secure your home’s energy future today and enjoy the benefits of renewable energy all year round by getting in touch with GreenGenUK today.

Why Choose Solar PV?

1. The energy generated from a solar array reduces electricity demand from the grid. As a result, this creates a significant saving on annual bills.

2. By replacing demand from the grid with renewable solar power, solar installations dramatically reduce a home or business’ carbon footprint.

3. Finally, the Smart Export Guarantee pays customers generating solar for unused energy sent back to the grid.

The benefits of

BOUND SURFACES

With their head office still in Newquay, Oltco has carefully managed a path of growth by offering solutions that manage to tick an array of boxes.

Oltco’s bespoke Resin Bound surfaces not only enhance a property aesthetically, but they also offer many practical benefits. Composed of resin along with stone aggregates (with recycled waste plastic being used in their Recycle Bound product), driveways, patios and paths can all benefit from the application of either. A big advantage of Resin Bound is its low maintenance requirement. Cleaning is extremely easy – a sweep with a stiff bristle brush and an occasional jet wash is all that is needed. And thanks to the permeable nature of the surface, which reduces water pooling, the likelihood of weed growth is minimised, meaning even less upkeep for homeowners. More importantly Resin Bound surfaces function as a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS), allowing water to soak through the surface similarly to how it would in soil, thus having less impact upon local soakaway systems and surrounding areas. Resin Bound surfaces involve the combination of stone and resin prior to installation, resulting in a strong, smooth and anti-slip surface. In contrast, Resin Bonded surfaces have a rough and uneven texture

to create the illusion of loose gravel and do not offer the environmental benefits of Resin Bound – they are neither permeable nor frost resistant.

The installation process itself is swift and stress-free for homeowners – no planning permission is required and depending on the area size, it can be installed in just one day.

Oltco’s innovative Recycle Bound product includes recycled waste plastic, offering a unique take on Resin Bound. This worldfirst, award-winning product was developed to address the growing global issue of waste plastic, with each square metre of Recycle Bound containing the equivalent of three thousand plastic straws.

With such confidence in their products, Oltco offers a guarantee of 15-20 years. A single phone call to the experts in Newquay is all it takes to start the journey to transforming a home with Oltco’s products.

The ultimate guide to weddings in Cornwall

Celebrating

Welcome to Weddings

The ultimate guide to weddings in Cornwall

When it comes to tying the knot, we all know that it can be something of a stressful time, so as part of our guide to weddings, we've compiled our top ten recommendations for creating the perfect day. First and foremost, you should consider your venue. Cornwall offers a range of beautiful places to make your pledge to one another, from coastal cliffs to countryside estates. Select a location that reflects your style, whether that be a boho beach ceremony or a more formal celebration at an historic manor. Cornwall is a popular wedding destination, so booking early would be our next piece of advice. Venues and vendors get booked up quickly, so be sure to secure your place, photographer and caterer well in advance.

The Duchy is home to many talented florists, caterers and artisans. By incorporating local produce, flowers and crafts into your wedding, not only supports local businesses but also adds an authentic Cornish touch to your big day. Work with companies who focus on fresh, seasonal and local ingredients. And why not incorporate seafood, Cornish pasties and artisan cheeses to elevate your wedding menu?

It’s likely that some of your guests will be travelling from out of county so planning for their travel in advance will make everyone’s life a little easier. Accommodation options abound in Cornwall, whether that be at your venue of choice or in one of the many luxury self-catering options. While Cornwall’s remote beauty may require a little extra planning, it will be worth it.

Surrounded by sea on all sides, any Cornish wedding should take full advantage of our stunning coastline. Think beachside ceremony, sunset photos on the sand or a sea-inspired theme to create a magical atmosphere. Make sure your memories are captured for eternity by hiring a photographer or videographer who knows the best local spots. Cornwall’s dramatic landscapes will create stunning wedding images that you’ll treasure forever.

Not wishing to put a dampener on the occasion, but Cornwall’s weather can be unpredictable, so have a backup plan for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. Consider marquee hire or an indoor space as an alternative and you’ll have a day to remember, whatever the weather.

Wishing you the best wedding day ever!

Wedding rings steeped in meaning

If you’re engaged and looking for a truly unique wedding ring with which to tie the knot, then look no further than Justin Duance and his team, who craft bespoke jewellery beautifully cast in beach sand. They also welcome anybody to be a part of the making process, as they understand that an item as precious and significant as a wedding ring should be something that gives you joy each and every time you slip it on. With this in mind, you’re encouraged to choose the beach sand that your rings are cast in. It could be a beach that you’ve loved since childhood, or one that holds special memories for you and your spouse-to-be. Whatever the reason, the sand not only creates a unique texture on the ring, but tiny grains are captured in the precious metal so you can carry a piece of your favourite place with you everywhere you go.

The Justin Duance team are also fully committed to using only recycled precious metals and fully traced, fairly traded diamonds and gemstones. Or perhaps you have an heirloom that you would like to repurpose into a ring that suits you and your style without losing its sentimental significance? If so, they can help there too, recasting your passed-down gold and gemstones into beautiful new sandcast designs, making your wedding ring that bit more personal and unique to you.

MEDfacials has been selected as a finalist at the prestigious Safety in Beauty International Diamond Awards; we talk to Dr. Stolte to discover more.

The Safety in Beauty Diamond Awards are the only awards in the cosmetic interventions industry that focus and celebrate the two most fundamental and crucial aspects of a positive consumer experience – Safety and Excellence. MEDfacials have been picked out of 3,000 entries as finalists for the best clinic in the south of England. We catch up with Dr. Stolte to find out what it means to him and his practice.

Recently, you became a finalist in the Safety in Beauty Awards for the best Aesthetic Clinic in the South of England. To reach the final ten, what does this achievement mean to you?

The team and I are thrilled to receive this recognition for our hard work and dedication. It reflects our unwavering commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care and the trust our clients place in our top-quality products and procedures. This trust has fostered long-lasting relationships with many of our clients, which makes this acknowledgment even more meaningful to us.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

At MEDfacials, we are more than just an aesthetic clinic – we take a holistic approach to each patient’s needs. We guide them through every step of their journey, beginning with an in-depth consultation where we carefully assess their medical history, physical condition and psychological suitability. We then create personalised treatment plans tailored to their unique requirements. Additionally, we educate our patients on how to optimise their skin health and maintain long-lasting results beyond the clinic.

What truly sets us apart is our team of highly skilled medical practitioners with

extensive experience, as well as our expert skin specialist, who has over a decade of experience in the field.

What is the key to standing out in the industry?

Our success is rooted in building relationships with our patients based on integrity, honesty and open communication. As a Medical doctor, GP and Aesthetic practitioner, understanding and addressing our patients' needs is paramount in this industry. At MEDfacials, we establish trust through genuine care and expertise. When a patient walks through our door, they know they are in safe hands and will receive exceptional care.

Aesthetic treatments are often viewed as purely physical transformations. However, these treatments can also impact a patient’s psychological well-being. Do you agree? Absolutely. Cosmetic procedures, when performed by a medically trained qualified practitioner in a safe and professional environment, can have profound mental health benefits. Patients often experience improved confidence and self-esteem, a higher quality of life, and a renewed sense of youthfulness. This enhanced sense of self positively influences various aspects of their lives, from personal relationships to professional engagements.

The flavour OF FALL

AAutumn in Cornwall is a season of mellow fruitfulness as the crowds recede and the county’s culinary bounty brings food to nourish the soul.

fter the merry madness of summer when thousands of visitors flood into Kernow, autumn brings with it a sense of calm. Roads, towns and beaches are less busy and for me, this is the best time of the year as the weather tends to stay mild and the sea is at its warmest. It is also a fantastic time for those able to visit the county outside of school holidays to enjoy the many walks, beaches, galleries and tourist attractions away from the hustle and bustle of high season.

ç LEFT INSET

Embrace the season with a nourishing roast lunch with all the trimmings

It's now that many Cornish gardens start showing their autumn colours of orange and yellow and it’s a wonderful opportunity to explore places like Tehidy Woods, Cardinham Woods and Lanhydrock House with its many trails and paths. The Cornish coastline is also a must-visit in autumn too. There’s nothing quite like witnessing the big swells and storms that whip up from the Atlantic as they crash into the coastline, sending plumes of spray across the seascape. Storm watching has become a favourite pastime in the Duchy, especially in Porthleven. Our village is often featured on the national news when a storm is brewing. Footage of big storms with enormous waves crashing into the sea defences and exploding with full force over our iconic clock tower quite often makes front page news. Crowds of people come to visit and witness the power of the sea, which serves as a reminder that we must always respect its might. While we all love a big storm, hopefully we won't have as many as last year… The 2023-24 storm season saw 12 named storms, the greatest number since the first season the Met Office began naming them in 2015!

BELOW ê

Enjoy a pre- or after-lunch indulgence with a chocolate martini

With autumn in the air, we tend to think about eating heartier dishes. The last of the berries, samphire, seaweed and other fruits are being foraged and turned into vinegar, pickles, jams, and purées. Brassicas, gourds and root vegetables are in their prime, as well as oysters and shellfish in general, and all will be used extensively to get the best of the season’s produce. Stews and braised dishes will also be featuring on our new autumn menus, as well as a dish I always look forward to returning: the Sunday roast.

We’ve kicked off the roast season at Kota Kai with a revamped offering. Taking advantage of our Josper Grill, smoky charred flavours will be added to each roast lunch, accompanied by a ‘proper’ flavoursome gravy that we infuse from our beef and chicken stocks. We’ve had an amazing response from our customers and are looking forward to long Sunday lunches when we can light the fire and have people sit back and linger over a cheese board and a red wine, or sticky toffee pudding with a chocolate martini, into the early evening. Also launching this autumn is the Sunday Roast Feast at Kota. One Sunday a month, we will be serving a feast-style roast with platters of shared starters, roast dishes with two different meats and delicious puddings. As ever, we will be going all-out to add our own special Kota twist by using the best ingredients available from nearby organic farms and super-local butchers. We will also have some fantastic Sunday cocktails to tempt; think Bloody Mary consommé, espresso martinis, mimosas and of course, wines to match each course

Rising to the OCCASION

Join chef patron Tom Hannon, who will be dazzling the crowd with an electrifying culinary demonstration at this year's Truro Food Festival.

If you’re wandering through Truro on Saturday, September 28th, do yourself a favour and swing by the Chefs’ Theatre at 2pm, where The Rising Sun’s chef patron, Tom Hannon, will be cooking up a feast for the sesnes. During this five-day foodie extravaganza, the heart of Truro will be resonating with live music, tantalising street food, and the crème de la crème of Cornwall’s chefs and producers.

And, after a summer steeped in lively gatherings, barbeques, and rosé-soaked evenings, the Rising Sun’s courtyard is now ready to embrace the quieter, cosier side of life. Kicking off in October, they invite you to their first candle lit event – a sensational cigar and whiskey evening. Imagine yourself greeted by a warming whiskey cocktail as you step into the secret courtyard garden, the fire crackling in the background. Feast on exquisite small plates, each a rich indulgence, while savouring a selection of premium cigars. All this, and you’ll be treated to enthralling tales from a cigar aficionado who has roamed the tobacco fields of Nicaragua.

Let’s talk about milestones, shall we? The Rising Sun is turning the big one-oh, and

they’re pulling out all the stops. Words can barely skim the surface of what these ten years have meant to them – filled with challenges, triumphs and unforgettable memories. Join them on October 19th for a night of unabashed revelry. Expect a vibrant barbeque, an outdoor bar and the melodic harmonies of a local choir, all set in their courtyard space. It’s going to be an evening steeped in Cornish spirit and song.

As December rolls in, so does a sumptuous wintry set menu that defies the ordinary Christmas dinner. Picture this – beetroot, fig, goats' cheese and walnut tart fine, slowroasted feather blade of beef accompanied by beef fat carrots, dauphinoise and a rich red wine jus. Whether it’s a reservation for two or a merry party of up to 25, they’re ready to make your festive season one to remember. Get set for unforgettable times at the Rising Sun in Truro!

Ocean-inspired

Where art and nature coalesce

Jo Downs Handmade Glass stunning fused glass shoaling fish wall installations bring the serene beauty of the ocean directly into your home. First inspired by a commission for an architect-designed home in Padstow – they have graced Jo’s galleries since their launch in 2014. Handmade in the heart of Cornwall, each piece is a unique testament to craftsmanship, with delicate glass fish artfully arranged to create the illusion of movement, as if a vibrant shoal is swimming across your wall. Available in five exquisite colourways, these installations offer multiple options, from calming coastal blues to warm sunset hues.

With seven different shape variations, there’s a design for every space, whether you’re looking for a subtle accent or a bold statement piece. Choose from the charming minnow shoals that add a touch of elegance to smaller spaces, or go for the impressive

Seascape artist

Vincent is a self-taught artist born in Maldon Essex, he was educated in Tiptree where his paintings were first exhibited as a young teenager. His work has been displayed in prestigious galleries in London, Essex, Suffolk and Southwest England.

Vincent has developed a passion for painting seascapes after living in Cornwall in his early twenties. The main medium for his work is oil. He moved back to Cornwall seven years ago with his partner Jane to the town

ocean shoal that commands attention and transforms any room into an undersea haven. Each installation is a product of creativity and artistry, capturing the essence of the seas around the Cornish coastline. Perfect for coastal homes, contemporary spaces, or anyone who appreciates the delicate balance between art and nature, the fused glass shoaling fish installations are more than just décor – they’re an immersive experience. Bring the tranquil rhythm of the ocean into your home with these beautiful, handcrafted works of art. View these amazing art pieces in the galleries and online, or commission your own bespoke installation.

Artist Sophie Palmer finds inspiration for her work along the Cornish coast, which she calls home. She can often be found walking the miles of Cornwall’s shorelines, gathering ideas for her next installation. The stunning range includes home décor, kitchen and lifestyle accessories as well as handmade jewellery.

This large scale piece (pictured), which is available to purchase online, forms a dramatic part of Sophie’s ‘midnight coast’ collection. Crafted from non-toxic resin, deep pigments, sculpting pastes and woods, it captures the sea’s immense power and the rapid, dramatic shifts of its midnight tides, as the waves crash against the towering rocks. A true talking piece of admiration, it measures 183cm by 61cm, and is very much a labour of love from Floral Waves. Many of Sophie’s pieces are bespoke or up-cycled and she welcomes private commissions.

Designed

BY THE SEA

Fourth Element’s Pelagic is no ordinary dive watch; it’s a statement for the discerning explorer who enjoys adventures on the edge of the world.

The story of dive brand fourth element begins in Porthleven, where Paul Strike grew up surrounded by a family who had an affinity with the sea and introduced him to diving at just 12 years old. Fast forward to a dive trip to Egypt with friend Jim Standing many years later, the pair identified a gap in the market for a dive brand that could produce high-performing technical kit, while fostering a lifestyle brand identity, offering community to those with a similar passion.

The friends returned to Cornwall, forming dive brand fourth element in 1999. With influential members of the world’s dive community giving their seal of approval to the brand at an early stage. 25 years on fourth element has now been adopted globally by the dive industry, with their technical clothing and drysuits being used in some of the most extreme places on earth and the brand of choice for leading dive teams, including the FBI and the British Special Forces.

Everything at fourth element is underpinned by its OceanPositive ethos; a term representing the business’ approach to sustainability, which runs from product and packaging to their professional practice. While maintaining a love and respect for the ocean, directors Paul and Jim continue to push the boundaries of possibility, innovating and expanding with an agility that sees new and exciting products coming to the fore on

a regular basis. The latest of which is the Pelagic; a luxury dive watch that is the first of its kind to come from a Cornish company.

Named after the unexplored zone of the open ocean, the Pelagic has 26 jewels and a visible Swiss-made automatic movement. The sapphire crystal is scratchresistant and anti-reflective, ensuring clarity in all conditions and the watch also comes with an interchangeable strap system, offering a choice between a stainless-steel bracelet for a more formal look and a rubber strap for more practical use. The Pelagic is water resistant to 500m, a depth out of most divers’ range, only ever approached by professionals. The helium escape valve, positioned on the watch case opposite the engraved crown, allows the safe release of gases accumulated during long dives. Every detail has been designed to meet the demands of serious divers while maintaining the elegance expected of a luxury timepiece. The watch is encased in a lightweight brushed steel, a material chosen not only for its durability, but also for its sleek appearance, making the watch as suitable for a deep-sea dive as it is to wear to dinner.

Time to CARE

One of the most precious things we have is time. Making the most of it is important; even more so when it is limited.

Cornwall Hospice Care is a 24/7 Cornish healthcare charity that provides compassionate, specialised end of life care for patients, their families and carers. They offer inpatient care at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices, Lymphoedema clinics, community support hubs, and bereavement services. This is free, thanks to the Cornish community, who generously support their work in many ways. Making time matter for patients is key. At their two hospices they have time to help people fulfil their wishes, from a special meal to a visit from their pet or a party with friends. We asked members of their Ward Teams to share their stories of how they made a day matter for a patient.

Sarah is one of the Senior Staff Nurses at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle. She offers her thoughts. “For me it’s the little things that make a difference. All our rooms lead on to a courtyard garden so patients can enjoy the greenery, the flowers and the colour, which I think is so important when people have been in hospital and haven’t had access to the outside. We’re also very lucky to have Paradise Park on our doorstep and they’re extremely kind and generous. We had one particular person who really wanted a last day out with their family and they had an amazing day thanks to the park.”

Healthcare Assistant at Mount Edgcumbe, Elaine, says, “I’ve been here for 26 years and I love it, it’s an amazing place to work. I’m here to tell you a little story that happened to me a few months ago. There were two small children visiting a patient in room 2, a little girl of about three and her brother who was about six. They were face-painting, so I told them I was going to a party after work and wondered if they’d like to do my face. I got on the floor and they had their creative moment on my face. You know it can be hard to come into the hospice, particularly for children, so it’s good to do things and help them make a memory that’s fun. It was hilarious and as I still had two hours to go on my shift, I had to visit other patients and see their reactions.”     Mark, a Housekeeping Supervisor at St Julia’s Hospice concludes, “We don’t do the hands on caring, like washing and giving medicine, we tend to go in to patient’s rooms and chat. Sometimes we have a laugh and we talk about normal things because that’s what patients tend to want to hear about. Sometimes they want to know about day-today things, sometimes they’re planning their funerals or their wakes. There was one lady with whom I always had a good old chat and it seemed that every time we were talking the geese flew over. She told me that when she left to go home, if she heard geese, she always thought of me and the hospice and the laughs and jokes we shared. She passed away and now when I hear geese, I think of her.”   Cornwall Hospice Care’s purpose is to provide compassionate, specialised end of life care for patients, their families and carers whilst maintaining high-quality standards. Together with their local community in Cornwall they will continue to make every day matter.

For many people, dental implants have become a popular, long-term solution that not only restore numerous smiles but also bring a boost in confidence. Unlike other replacements such as dentures or bridges, dental implants offer unique benefits that provide a more natural look and feel. This has made them an appealing choice for those seeking a durable and effective solution.

Carol, a satisfied patient, shared her experience, "I am now on my third implant; the first two are perfect and it’s great not to have the big gaps between my teeth anymore.”

One of the standout advantages of dental implants is their potential to be a lifelong solution when cared for properly and checked regularly. Unlike dentures, there’s no need to remove them for eating or sleeping, making them a convenient and seamless addition to your daily life.

Beyond the technical outcomes, patients of Portman Dental Care frequently commend the caring and professional approach of the staff. A testament to this comes from one delighted patient, "My treatment and welcome were outstanding from my initial consultation. Transformative new

INVESTMENT

One of the UK’s most ambitious rewilding projects has been made possible thanks to significant new investment from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Thanks to National Lottery players, Tor to Shore aims to create a thriving landscape rich in wildlife, from the large granite boulders and heights of Helman Tor in central Cornwall, through the Par River and surrounding farmland, to Cornwall’s south coast. The project will also protect and restore marine habitats in St Austell Bay, including maerl beds that have potentially existed for more than 4,000 years.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust has been awarded a £265,000 development grant to progress plans and introduce pioneering conservation techniques, including the implementation of rewilding principles at Helman Tor nature reserve. This could lead to over £3 million of further funding for nature in Cornwall.

Cornwall may be famed for its rugged coastline and turquoise waters, but this natural beauty masks the hard truth that wildlife is in trouble – both on land and at sea. The most recent State of Nature report for Cornwall revealed that almost a quarter of mammals and butterfly species are at risk of extinction, and that the ‘richest’ sites for wildlife are too disconnected from each other.

At the heart of Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s ambitions for the area are plans to bring together people and communities from all backgrounds to act for, connect with and benefit from nature.

Matt Walpole, Chief Executive of Cornwall Wildlife Trust, says, “Nature in Cornwall needs more than Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s efforts alone if we’re to reverse its current decline. It needs more people, from all spheres, to take action. By working collaboratively across the project area, Tor to Shore will mobilise and support communities, businesses, farmers, fishers, statutory bodies and others to get behind nature, benefiting wildlife, our economy and our wellbeing.”

Tor to Shore’s development phase will engage stakeholders in the project area to lay the groundwork for a community-focused approach for nature’s recovery across land and sea.
