to the May issue of Cornwall Living!
n this issue of Cornwall Living, we meet Sian, founder of the School of Outdoor Art. Immersed in the seasons’ yearly cycles – where the outdoors is the studio and the elements are as much the media and tools as the paints and brushes – Sian explains how the School of Outdoor Art can offer artists of all abilities a creative experience with a difference. Read more from page 20. This month also sees us take a look inside some of Cornwall’s hottest property (from page 28) and for those who are simply planning to escape to the Duchy (once government restrictions allow) from page 56 we have some delightful Cornish stays to peruse. If you are considering investing in a Cornish holiday let, then turn to pages 61 and 62, where you’ll find plenty of inspiration and ideas on how to go about realising your dream. Add to all of this some superb ideas for your home (from page 40), a window into Cornwall’s art scene (from page 75) and some unbelievable Cornish competitions (page 79) and this month’s issue of Cornwall Living has everything you need to make the most of spring time in the Duchy. ...happy reading!

Writing to the Queen during Covid
Introducing holiday home waste specialists,
CTC Waste
If somebody said to you that 100% of your holiday guests’ rubbish could be recycled, you may not believe them. With CTC Waste, however, this is precisely what you can expect.
Keeping spirits high and smiles aplenty has been the aim at Bluebird Care during lockdown. It has been a time to think outside of the box, explore ideas, be creative and even learn something new. From getting crafty and making pictures and cards for family members, to wondrous walks looking at the beautiful views that Cornwall has to offer. “It was chatting about what our customers enjoy doing, and then being proactive a out finding ways to do it onsidering the Covid-19 restrictions,” explains Carol Carruthers, Bluebird Care Director. “Activities included visiting the woods to feed the du s, deli ious fish and hips from the local town on a drive to watch the sea, playing board games on rainy days, and baking some delicious treats that our customers remembered making with their families when they were growing up. One of our customers is a big fan of the royal
family, so our live-in carer helped them write a letter to the Queen, and they even had a reply!” Bluebird Care is all about giving time to others and enjoying the things in life that make us smile. “It’s hard work,” says Carol, “but can feel effortless because that’s what we love to do. Caring involves so many factors, and after a busy day of activity and variety, knowing we made someone happy and fulfilled, a es it rewarding and definitely pro ides great o satisfa tion If you have a knack for keeping spirits high and making those around you smile, or are contemplating a career change to so ething ore fulfilling, then lue ird Care would love to hear from you. That’s right, charging only for waste collected, the CTC Waste team will ensure that none of your guests’ waste makes it to landfill, seeing to it that e ery ite is re y led – a guarantee that you can then pass onto your customers. The best part is that they needn’t discard it all into separate bags; simply throw everything into the same bin liner and CTC will manually sort through it all for you – perfect if you’re a holiday home owner looking to make your guests’ experience as easy and stress-free as possible. Even if access to your holiday let is tricky, no problem! With two decades’ experience here in Cornwall, the team are able to navigate even the tightest of spaces. Approved by the Environment Agency with its very own recycling facility running for more than 20 years on the Roseland peninsula, if you want to ensure that your holiday home waste is taken care of responsibly, be sure to check out CTC Waste! The Bottle Deli in Newquay is not only a wine bar and eatery, it also hosts a deli counter and a wine shop, with a wide variety of wines from around the world, and whilst many said that opening their doors in August last year was a brave move, owners Rob and Toyah have nevertheless made it a success! Now, as we look to make the most of the spring and summer post-lockdown, The Bottle is ready and raring to swing open its doors on 17th May to welcome customers old and new. Tucked away in the backstreets of Newquay, The Bottle provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the main streets in the peak of summer, offering a twist on the traditional and bringing a little bit of southern France to Cornwall. The team is excited to introduce its new spring and summer menu, featuring lots of fresh dishes sitting alongside the popular cheese and sharing boards, all
still in The Bottle’s casual European style. Rumour has it that there will even be a vegan cheeseboard making an appearance… With lots of events including wine tastings in the diary for the coming year, be sure to keep an eye on social media or the website for details or sign up to their newsletter to e the first in the now For more information call 07713 883259 or visit www.thebottlenqy.co.uk

Lilly Lewarne pulls off
architectural masterclass
Longing for
New Horizons? At last new horizons are within reach around the ti eless fishing illage alled Coverack sits on the Lizard – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and the unspoilt views are always sensational. Coverack has a gently curving bay, dramatic cliffs and landscape, a seafront of thatched cottages and a beautiful little stone harbour, perfect for sunbathing, swimming and wat hing the fishing oats sail in The beach is a stone’s throw away from the Bay Hotel’s front door, with all bedrooms overlooking the sea. This means you can wake up to the sound of lapping waves, before spending the day swimming, sunning yourself on the sand, or walking across the cliffs that run alongside it. At night, those same waves that roused you promise to lull you back to sleep.
Established in 1992, Lilly Lewarne Architects pride themselves not only on local knowledge and a strong reputation for excellent architecture, but also on their ability to provide an engaging and cost-effective design service. Experienced in commercial, educational, medical, leisure, spa, hotels and all aspects of residential architecture, Lilly Lewarne have a broad range of professional e pertise to offer, and are onfident in their ability to meet and surpass the demands of any brief. The practice excels in providing a comprehensive service ranging from the early stages of feasibility, conceptual design and planning negotiations, through to the preparation of production drawings, on-site inspections and contract administration. LLA offer 3D generated computer models as well as more traditional hand-drawn artist’s impressions to complement and illustrate proposed designs.
One such example of the team’s expertise is Salt House in St Ives; now a part of the luxurious Carbis Bay Holidays portfolio, this property was brought to life after an original scheme submitted by another architect was refused planning permission. Lilly Lewarne Architects were commissioned to redesign the proposals and negotiate a successful outcome with the local planning authority. And that they did!
The Bay serves locally sourced and freshly prepared food, is child and dog friendly, and is beautifully situated to encourage new adventures. For more information call 01326 280464 or visit www.thebayhotel.co.uk
The main body of the existing three-storey house was preserved, but the inclusion of balcony extensions, internal remodelling and the replacement roof accommodation meant that a complete aesthetic overhaul was achieved, providing high quality and contemporary accommodation. In other words, a job well done! For more information call 01872 261000 or visit www.lillylewarne.co.uk

Exciting times ahead for Wild Tipi

Having nurtured a sterling reputation in just a few short years as the place to go for dog owners who want only the very best for their four-legged friends, Slickers Doghouse in Padstow is forever adding to its offering. Even throughout the recent lockdown, Slickers owner, Lisa Hope, has been fervently working away, and now that Cornwall looks set to re-open for the summer season, we’re excited to hear what she’s been up to.

Firstly, Lisa tells us that there are lots of new products now on the Slickers Doghouse shelves. These include one of the most recent additions, the SlickerShield (pictured). These ultrastrong, non-toxic silicone shields are designed to slip over the ‘business’ end of your lead, and are perfect for pups who like to chew, keeping them safe and saving the expense of having to purchase replacement, un-chewed leads.
Finally, and perhaps most impressively, we learn that Slickers now has a brand-new warehouse, where click and collect is now available, meaning you needn’t battle your way into town. As demand increases for the stable of products that Lisa and the team have become known for, and as they branch out and look to offer customers access to a wider variety of larger products, including doggie strollers (also pictured), the new warehouse space means that for anybody in need of anything for their pooch, Slickers Doghouse is most certainly the place to go!

Beautiful blooms for hospice care Cornwall Hospice Care’s popular Open Gardens scheme is back for 2021. Now in its 9th year, the event gives supporters the chance to visit private picturesque Cornish gardens. Last year the scheme was cancelled, but Event Organiser Hayley Cayton is optimistic: “We all need to get out and we’re hoping for a roaring success, helping to raise vital funds for our two hospices at Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle that have remained open 24/7 throughout the pandemic.” Regular supporting gardens include The Lodge near Bodmin and the Tanglewood Wild Gardens near Penzance. New participants include Arundell on the north Cornish coast and the Trevince Estate near Redruth.
Cornwall Hospice Care is also launching a selection of virtual garden visits. The videos aim to give people who’re still unsure about venturing out, a chance to view gardens from their own homes. For more information call 01726 66868 (option 3) or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Is your garden ready for summer? As government restrictions look set to continue easing, and with the summer just around the corner, what better time than now to start considering improvements and renovations in your garden? Such considerations often lead us to look to our fences, and whether those currently in place are really up to the job. Wooden fences, for example, often suffer during the cold, windy and rainy months and require a lot of TLC in order to maintain their allure. ColourFence is a great alternative to traditional wooden fencing, as it doesn’t require any maintenance for 25 years, looks beautiful with a different range of colours and combinations, and most importantly, keeps your garden safe and stylish. If you want to know more, why not give the team a call to arrange a free no-obligation quote and site survey?

mmersed in the seasons’ yearly cycles – where the outdoors is the studio and the elements are as much the media and tools as the paints and brushes – the School of Outdoor Art (SOOA) has been putting down creative roots for the last 20 years. Artist Sian Blunt (Pilley) and husband Drew Pilley (immerseoutdoors.co.uk) married on the land they bought in 2002, planting an orchard and a variety of fruit trees as wedding presents. Over the last three years, the fruits of their labour have begun to blossom. ian studied art first at al outh rt College in the early 90s, specialising in painting. She then went onto study community, therapy, public and contextual arts alongside de eloping her own fine art practice at degree level at UWE Bower Ashton, Bristol. Her wide and ranging experiences include community and cultural projects, and teaching both children and adults in the creative arts and education sector. Development of her own commercial practice took a break whilst having children, but with regular sales and the odd commission, she is now receiving further support from Cultivator – an EU funding stream that innovates and expands the Cornish Creative industries – to progress this area further. As a developing artist, Sian feels best placed to support others who are attempting to dedicate more energy, time and motivation into their own artwork, having understood first hand the di ulties, fa ily pressures and exhaustion that often become a barrier to reaching creative aspirations.

As a client of Cultivator, Sian was successfully awarded funding to design and collaborate with local companies to realise her vision of a Portable Outdoor Studio. The ‘POD’ Studio enables, with ease, established or budding artists to develop their arts practice in the outdoor environment. An easel and workstation that contains everything you need, within a box on wheels, means that you can ow naturally in your reati e u le’, uninterrupted by resource sharing and gathering that is often experienced in group classes or courses. o e people ay find a ourse situation intimidating, perhaps intense, interacting with people they have never met,” says Sian. “Although there is opportunity for skills sharing and connection with other participants on a SOOA course, the Pod Studios and the outdoor space allow participants to have a focused and peaceful environment to work through their processes independently, developing ideas in isolation yet connected to the natural world and their unique place within it; sharing in tandem with the group community but accommodated in your own personal space.”

BELOW Discussing process
Sian sees the creative process as an aspect of the cyclical nature of the natural world: “We experience moments of contemplation and frustration, whilst making. The seed of an idea or creation can form which then requires effort and careful nurturing until we see the work bloom or come to fruition. Often along the way we can have moments of doubt that sometimes stunts growth, resistance to obstructions or unwanted judgments that attack our vulnerable shoots. Becoming familiar with this pro ess and seeing it re e ted a in nature, I believe supports our creative development. As we ‘harvest’ our work we then begin new work or the next project and the whole process begins again. “When I create I feel a connection to something beyond words – stillness, yet a ow, ontinues ian he od tudios almost reverse the concept of an art studio, where the internal is the personal physical space. Being in the expansive outdoors, somehow brings you closer to the internal workings of yourself, enhanced by a creative focus. Something that our busy lives and busy minds sometimes struggle to achieve and permit. I can’t say that the experience will always be relaxing. Often the creative process is emotive and can surface frustrations. It is only then that a sense of accomplishment or achievement occurs. By moving through some aspect of failure or mistake we begin to trust the process and grow a resilience to going beyond our comfort zones. This to me embodies the creative process and the joy I feel from making art as you overcome hallenges and self dou t
riginally designed as a pop up’ usiness with some courses at The Croft, alongside a travelling programme of mobile art school opportunities, supporting local and national events, the current climate has reshaped the programme to embed further at the parcel of land just off the A30 near Camborne. Hidden off the beaten track, it is situated surprisingly near to civilisation – centrally positioned in the heart of mining landscape just 20 minutes equidistant from the stunning north and south oast’s liffs, ea hes, fishing illages and creeks. SOOA is very much a movable feast with ‘outside the box’ ideas and suggestions of how these ingenious, imaginative creative stations an e used in infinite ways s an example, collaborations with Immerse Outdoors have taken the SOOA to the water with sketching and painting courses on the Helford river. Based at Gweek Classic oatyard, a eet of anadian anoes are set to go up the creek with a sketchbook again this season, with experiences ranging from wildlife and birdwatching and drawing courses, to a day on the river gathering source material to develop back at The Croft as part of a two or three day painting ourse ther olla orations ha e in luded four day reati e family art residencies, and combined activities with schools, Brownie, Guide and Ranger groups, rotating with art, craft, archery and stand up paddle oarding, to na e ut a few Both Sian and Drew have extensive combined professional career backgrounds in the outdoor, education and arts sectors, teaching and lecturing as well as designing and o ordinating o unity e ents and projects for at least the past 20 years. The rest of the accommodation is served by a family bathroom, which, with its freestanding bathtub, gorgeous contemporary sanitaryware and large agstone tiles, is a feature in itself! Downstairs, as well as a large sitting roo with a feature firepla e and characterful period features, and a sizeable contemporary kitchen with a sociable island unit and gorgeous agstone ooring, there is also a generous dining room with French doors opening out onto the rear courtyard. ocated in a St Kew – a settlement mentioned in the Domesday book – The Long House enjoys a prominent yet secluded position, just a short distance from the rugged north coast. The property retains many of its original features, blending them seamlessly with more contemporary elements. Exposed beams can be found in most rooms, as can natural wood or ornish slate ooring, and it’s these traditional materials and features that characterise The Longhouse, combining with an otherwise neutral, contemporary décor to create a palpably relaxed ‘house in the country’ vibe. The accommodation comprises three bedrooms, including a master with its own en suite. Downstairs, a generous sitting room with a granite firepla e and wood urner invites you to sit and relax for the evening, whilst a fabulous kitchen diner with exposed beams and an Aga at its heart, completes the house’s farmhouse feel. Outside, the property is approached from a lane via double gates, opening onto a large gravelled parking area. To the front of the house is a full-width patio framed with planted borders – a lovely spot to enjoy the sun all day – and to the east, a mature hedged boundary provides plenty of privacy. Keep going to the south side and you’ll find a secluded, enclosed sun-trap patio – the perfect sunny spot, whether you’re entertaining with
a barbeque or simply enjoying some peace and quiet. Finally, to the rear of the house, there is a ti er uilt ho e o e studio workshop – perfect for hobbyists or for those working from home. Combining a superb location within easy reach of all that the north coast has to offer, with characterful accommodation and private grounds that are a pleasure to spend time in, The Long House is a rare opportunity for anybody looking for their own slice of quintessential Cornwall.

The Liner, Falmouth, living up to Acorn's ethos: different by design
ver the last 25 years, Acorn has become established as a specialist in bespoke medium-sized, awardwinning housing developments – in areas where the need for quality new homes outstrips supply, across the south west of England, London and south Wales. Priding themselves on being ‘different by design’, each team across the country puts creativity and sustainability at the forefront of each development, ensuring that the homeowner gets the very best from their modern home. With an in-house team of architects, interior designers, town planners, surveyors and construction managers, Acorn can be trusted to make the most of every opportunity. Together with its research, sales and marketing teams, Acorn specialises in creating and delivering the best scheme for each individual site and community. That last point is particularly important; community is always at the heart of what Acorn does, and as Melanie Omirou, Executive Group Managing Director and
Funding Director, says: “We strive to put the needs of our o unities first whether that’s creating jobs in local areas or creating homes that are accessible for a range of uyers, fro first ti e uyers to downsi ers or investors.” This approach to development has seen Acorn become one of the most successful companies of its kind in the UK, the recent launch of Acorn Property Invest comes as no surprise, but what exactly is it? In short, Acorn Property Invest allows people to ultimately invest in the property market through a modern approach. “We have a Bond offering and a Preference Share,” says Melanie. “Our Preference Shares offer in estors the han e to share in our profits y investing directly in our Cotswolds scheme, Ashton Fields.” This unique freehold site promises to provide bespoke homes for a range of occupiers and at the same time, regenerate this once-vibrant community. “These Preference Shares have been structured with the investor’s security in

mind,” continues Melanie, “so offer a rate of return regardless of profita ility, ut also gi e in estors a share of our profits e now also have an ISA eligible Bond offering – allowing our investors an opportunity to potentially invest through an ISA.” To help investors in their decision making, Acorn favours transparency in its plans for the future, and how it foresees growth and opportunity to continue to build projects that are not only profita le and strategi , ut are also led by the company’s moral principles. “Our plan going forward,” reveals Melanie, “is essentially under three pillars: south west, sustainability and community. “Firstly, we plan to focus the growth of our business in the south west – an area that we see as the most positive for housing opportunities.” With positive population growth, great employment opportunities, improved transportation links and great schools, Melanie explains that current demand far outweighs supply. “Alongside this,” she elaborates, “we will maintain a wide variety of projects in each region to meet demand from a broad selection of buyers, ensuring Acorn’s business is not reliant on any one sector or region, therefore ensuring we have developments accessible to all buyers.” Secondly, Acorn intends to uphold a commitment to the highest standards of sustainability and design throughout every scheme. Indeed, since its inception in 1995, Acorn has continued to implement design strategies and innovative technologies aimed at steadily improving the environmental impact of its homes. As Melanie says: “We believe that a focus on sustainability and wellbeing should be at the absolute forefront of everything we do.” This is where Acorn Green comes in. Acorn Green is the embodiment of Acorn’s commitment to the implementation of the best possible design and technologies to further drive down the carbon footprint of each of its homes, and move towards long-

term sustainable housing in communities. “As we have always done,” says Melanie, “each development we design and build is looked at on its own merits. There is no standard layout or design, and this approach also applies to sustainability. As technology evolves, so do our homes; the way in which we live is constantly changing, and our innovative thinking ensures we can respond in a way that’s pro-active.” Finally, Acorn will continue to champion its response to the housing crisis in this country, which as Melanie says, “goes beyond the architectural principles and urban design theories, but deals with the future needs of our communities.” “At Acorn,” concludes Melanie, “we understand a community’s history and aspirations, its lifestyle and collective memories, and seek to create animated and functional urban forms that not only cater to identifia le lo al de ographi and e ono i needs, but that reinforce the continuity of a neigh ourhood’s hara ter and a our If these plans for the future interest you and you’d li e to find out ore a out the rewards you could reap from this or any of Acorn’s other investment opportunities, then be sure to visit the website or get in touch with the Investor Services Team.

riding themselves on quality design and craftsmanship, the team at Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories create unique, bespoke designs that truly enhance the homes of their clients. The company has more than 35 years' experience and has nurtured a reputation for quality, both in terms of the products they supply and install, and the attention to detail and craftsmanship that they bring to each and every project. To give you an idea of what we mean, and so that you needn’t just take our word for it, we caught up with one of Philip Whear’s recent clients, Keith and Sarah Hancock, and asked them to tell us about their experience. We’re sure you’ll agree, that the finished result is nothing short of spectacular! “Recently, Sarah and I have been lucky enough to li e in our top oor at o erloo ing the water across to Flushing,” explains Keith. “It’s in a stack of three on a very old granite pier sticking out into Falmouth Harbour.” hese, e plains eith, were the first part of the Admirals Quay development, started in 1990. “Being where we are, we have a roof garden.
This was accessed by a spiral staircase leading to a timber greenhouse, which, being so exposed, was suffering and leaking. We agreed with the planners and our management company to improve the access with a straight stair ight and to eep the weather out of our living area below with a new, larger conservatory.” So how did they go about achieving their vision? “There are plenty of conservatory makers in the county,” says Keith, “but few who are capable of running a job like this, where the installation required scaffolding o ing out of the sea, around the ats and over our chimney.” In fact, he reveals that the new structure had to be 20 metres high and fully weather protected with a roof and sides. What’s more, “all of the old structure had to come down via a hoist, and similarly, new equipment had to go up it, 15 metres above the courtyard.” “That requirement thinned out the suppliers list onsidera ly, eith re eals he final shortlist of two comprised a timber frame solution from out of county, and Philip Whear,

It is clear that I wouldn’t be writing this review if it had gone badly!” It’s clear to see then that Philip Whear went the extra mile, and as Keith tells us: “We had a variety of staff on site for over four months, and they remained considerate, trustworthy, exceptionally helpful and
pleasant to have around. Despite all the ine ita le site pro le s, we finished on time, on budget, and friends! I’ve been in the construction industry for many years, and there are few companies of whom I can say that.” You can see more examples of the work that the Philip Whear team are proud to be a part of by visiting the website. ROOTED IN
CORNWALL Oltco continues to expand around the UK, which means more local job opportunities at its headquarters right here in Cornwall.
INSET Oltco Directors, Johnny Pearce and Tom Stringer
A
s Oltco, the UK’s leading sustainable resin driveway company, continues to grow and evolve around the UK, it’s great to hear that Directors, Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, are continuing to focus on their roots, growing their Cornish based team and creating job opportunities for local people. In fact, we've learnt that Oltco recently expanded the installation team with the addition of two new Trowellers, Carlos and Bradley, son and step-son of Oltco Account Manager, Loida Ramirez. This brings the installation team up to a total of six, and if Oltco’s continued growth is anything to go by, we can expect that number to continue increasing. Also recently hired is Kris Evans, who regular readers of Cornwall Living may remember from our last issue. Kris, Oltco Cornwall’s new Sales Support Manager, is responsible for carrying out site visits and ensuring the operations are running smoothly. But much like the rest of the team, his skillset is somewhat multifaceted, and last issue he even offered us his top garden tips, to help get our gardens ship-shape
for the spring and summer season. Carlos, Bradley and Kris represent but a fraction of the growth Oltco has seen in recent months. In fact, in 2020 alone, Oltco launched a total of 16 new franchises across the UK, at the same time expanding its HQ team by hiring Tash Eldon as e upport, as well as re ruiting fi e new Account Managers – Elliott Jolly, Loida Ramirez, Laina Ferris, Jenni Cullis and Linzi Goodman – all of whom are based in Cornwall. With 36 areas franchised in total, and with more planned for 2021 (as well as an e pansion of the ornwall o e , it’s fair to say that Oltco will only continue to provide more jobs to local people. At a time when job opportunities in the Duchy have perhaps never been more highly coveted, this is a reassuring thought indeed.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Cornish Cottage Holidays, some of the highest earning features chosen by guests include: • Outdoor space • Luxury homes • Woodburners • WiFi • Added value • Sustainable holidays
C
ornish Cottage Holidays’ Property Manager, Janine Woods, shares her many years of knowledge about buying and letting holiday properties in Cornwall. “In recent years, Britain has enjoyed a staycation boom with more of us choosing to holiday in the UK rather than abroad,” she explains. “Buying a holiday home to let can be a fun and highly lucrative endeavour, but it is important to do your homework.” The obvious place to start is via a quick phone call with the experts at Cornish Cottage Holidays. “We have been managing and marketing holiday homes successfully in Cornwall for more than 50 years,” says Janine. “We have the experience and knowledge to advise you on buying a holiday let and maximising the return on your investment.” Things you can ask include what the best places are in which to buy a holiday home. “Aside from your personal preference,” says Janine, “a prime tourist location will ensure a high volume of bookings and a good return on investment.” She elaborates that generally, the best locations are coastal, preferably with a sea view, and within walking distance of a beach or the coast path. “However, let’s not forget areas of natural beauty, peaceful countryside and picturesque towns and villages, which offer a different appeal.”
The next question is what do holidaymakers want from a holiday home? Janine and co. successfully let all types and styles, from character cottages to hypermodern apartments, and everything in between, including grand-country piles, rustic barns and luxury pads. “Ultimately,” explains Janine, “it all comes back to giving holidaymakers what they want.” Finally, you need to do your sums! “It’s a good idea to speak with us to establish what the potential income might be from your investment,” says Janine. “If you require finan ing to uy your holiday ho e, you will face increasingly stringent affordability criteria from mortgage lenders. s the temperatures rise with the onset of spring, the Lizard’s many and varied landscapes truly come to life, as wildlife re-emerges and the landscape begins exploding with colour. The season arrives earlier on the Lizard which, with its own microclimate, is almost frostfree, providing ideal growing conditions for a number of rare plants. These include the rare fringed rupturewort – a small, low-growing plant with yellow green owers ound in sandy and rocky habitats, it’s reported that in mainland Britain, there are no records of this plant anywhere else other than the Lizard since 2010 – testament to the uniqueness of this enigmatic peninsula. In short, spring on the Lizard is a transformative period that, for nature lovers, simply has to be experienced. At the Housel Bay Hotel, you’ll have the perfect base from which to enjoy this seasonal awakening, especially thanks to the new ‘Taste of the Season’ offer. This three-night stay includes meals at both restaurants – he erra e, and allowfields as well as a wel o e drin in ar oni’s ar allowfields offers à la carte, as well as a tasting menu with optional paired wines, and, with two Rosettes, has been nominated as ‘Best Hotel Restaurant’

This all means that after a day spent exploring the local area and engaging your senses with the sights, sounds and smells of the coast, you can retire to Housel Bay Hotel and satisfy that hearty sea-air appetite with your choice from the spring menus. Built with seasonal produce, much of which is sourced from around the peninsula, you’re sure not to be left disappointed. hen you’re finished, why not head a out for a walk at Lizard Point? With longer, warmer evenings, and dark skies that are free of light pollution, there is a palpable sense of magic in the air here as day turns to night. What’s more, for those who over indulged at dinner, there’s no better way to wash it down than drinking in the sun-burnt skies of a spectacular Lizard sunset.

TAKE A TOUR
Cornwall is, of course, a wonderful place to visit. But have you ever considered taking a private guided tour for a true Cornish experience?
A
fter working in the Duchy’s hospitality and tourism industry for more than 20 years, Louise West had a dream to set up her very own tour guide business. Drawing on her local knowledge and love for her county, ‘Experience Cornwall Tours’ was created to share, with visitors, Cornwall’s unique combination of beauty, heritage, culture and hospitality. “When I visit somewhere new, I want to really experience the place, meet its people, dis o er its se rets, find the ost s eni spots off the main tourist routes, and eat the local cuisine,” explains Louise. “So on all my tours, I offer guests just that. Not just a scenic tour, but a true Cornish experience.” On a tour with Louise, not only will you visit must-see attractions and hidden gems, but you will also have the opportunity to walk a stretch of the South West Coast Path, which is renowned as being one of the most spectacular coastal trails in the country. You’ll also explore Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, of which Cornwall has 12, delve into Cornwall’s mining heritage which has UNESCO status, and enjoy a traditional Cornish cream tea picnic to top off the whole experience.
A guided tour means that Louise and the team take care of all the driving, and if you have been lucky enough to visit Cornwall before, you will know that our narrow, high, dry stone walled lanes can be challenging to navigate. Not only will you have a safe outing while being driven by a ertified ad an ed dri er, you an e en e collected from your Cornish accommodation’s front door, which, of course, means no designated driver! You are on holiday after all, and there are plenty of award-winning beverages to enjoy with your lunch, which Experience Cornwall Tours can also make recommendations for. Put simply, with Louise’s friendly demeanour, professional attitude and expert local knowledge, a tour with Experience Cornwall Tours promises to be the highlight of your holiday.

Located on the water’s edge at Mylor Yacht Harbour, this well-established bar and restaurant enjoys one of Cornwall’s most picturesque settings, one where you can grab a coffee or a quick drink and simply watch the world on the water go by. But it’s not only the location that’s proven popular over the years; it’s also the perfect place to gather with friends and family and enjoy a sumptuous meal in good company, and after a year of lockdowns, with most of us eagerly awaiting a long-overdue catch up with our loved ones, that sounds like a fabulous prospect indeed! ou’ll find that the enu has so ething for everybody. Utilising the very best local ingredients, including seafood landed right on the restaurant’s doorstep in the harbour, everything on the menu is as fresh as it could be, which not only means un eata le a our, ut also that all dietary requirements can be catered for. What’s more, the team is incredibly proud of the accompanying wine list, and works with some superb Cornish suppliers to ensure you have the very best wines to pair with your food. Simply ask the team for their recommendations and they’ll be more than happy to help. In fact, the Castaways crew are always on hand and happy to help ensure you make the most of your time there. Whether it’s an impromptu meal and long-overdue catch
up with friends, a birthday party, or even a wedding reception; with two restaurants and exclusive dining areas to choose from, Castaways can tailor your event to your needs. They can also recommend some of the best walks in the local area, including dog-friendly beaches right on the doorstep. Add to this the fact that the restaurant itself is dog friendly, and Castaways is also a mustvisit for anybody exploring the area with their furry friend in tow. Finally, if you’re holidaying in the area and don’t feel like cooking, then why not make the most of Castaways’ takeaway service? Ideal for those who simply want to put their feet up without the hassle of cooking or getting ready for an evening out, simply give the team a call, order your choice from the tempting menu, and enjoy the chefs’ signature foodie air fro the o fort of your holiday home. Combining a fabulous waterside location with incredible food and second-to-none customer service, if you’ve missed the atmosphere of your favourite restaurants during the recent lockdown, then a trip to Castaways, Mylor, comes highly recommended.

THE PURSUIT OF

We hear from Cornish Rock Gin, and see what the family have been up to during the most recent lockdown.
etermined not to let another lockdown break their spirits, the Cornish Rock Gin Distillery family have used the time to dream up and produce two new fantastic gins, extending their popular ‘Bonanza Boys’ stable of gins to eight. And that’s not all. During what have, for most, been relatively quiet months, the Cornish distillery has also produced a further three rums – bringing the previous rum lineup of three up to six! The magic that is Cornish Rock Gin began in Cornwall when owners Angie and George were out walking their dog, Blue, on Rock beach. Cornish Gold was followed by Rock Blue Angel Gin, a fabulous gin in a rich blue colour, and a very smooth gentle gin taste. Soon after came Rock Orange Sunset, a light orange marmalade tasting gin, before the arrival of Rock Cherry Kiss – a well-rounded gin with more than a hint of cherries. Speaking with Angie and George, we learn that the first of the new gins is o ellow ellow affron, oasting a super a our profile with a deep yellow olour ou get the classic taste of gin with a rich saffron a our, e plains ngie he saffron is harvested locally on the Roseland peninsula, whi h is i portant, as ngie says, e ause with every gin we make, we strive for originality and finely sour ed ingredients, and no sour e of ingredients is finer than lo al i ply put, o ellow ellow Saffron is a true taste of Cornwall in a bottle.

Introducing Kiandles – a superb, sustainable business idea brought to life with the help of Outset Cornwall.
orking in a busy bar in Penryn, Kia-vanna Harrison became frustrated by the amount of waste eing sent to landfill, particularly the waste wax from the many candles the bar uses each week. She came up with a sustainable solution; collect the waste wax, learn the process of andle a ing, filter the old wa and ould it into new candle creations. “I’ve always wanted to do something creative and I’m really passionate about the environment,” says Kia. “Moving to live by the sea in Cornwall made me so aware of how disposable the world has become. Doing something positive, even if it’s something s all li e eeping so e wa out of landfill, is really motivating,” Kia’s hobby soon grew, as she began selling to friends, on Etsy and back into the bar where the wax originated from. Word spread after posting her story and products online, and more local restaurants and bars decided to join Kia on her recycling mission by saving their used candle wax, seeing the value in reducing their waste removal costs. In early 2020, Kia realised she needed more support to turn her hobby into a professional and profita le enterprise fter a friend recommended Outset Cornwall’s business start-up programme, Kia signed up and Kiandles was launched.
“Outset has been really motivational,” enthuses Kia. “Each session gets me excited about my business and makes me feel like ’ really onto so ething he finan e sections showed me what I’m actually getting out of the business and what I could achieve if I manage and organise it all properly.” Kiandles is growing rapidly; Kia now collects waste wax from thirteen venues, and from households who donate at a local Zero Waste shop. She sells her candles back to the venues at a reduced price, to consumers globally via her website and Etsy, and through a retailer in Falmouth. Stock sells out faster than she can produce and deliver it, so she is now looking for more businesses to supply her with waste wax, and at making the collection process ore stru tured, e ient and sustaina le Kia says: “Even if you don’t have a completely clear business idea, you’ll definitely o e out of utset’s sessions with one. I’ve been using Outset Online alongside and it’s really helpful; work through the questions and a complete business plan o es out at the end would definitely recommend Outset Cornwall if you need encouragement to get your business started.”
