ornwall is all about escapism; a place where you can retreat from the everyday hubbub of the outside world, to relax and rejuvenate among the beautiful scenery. So it’s only apt that for our cover feature this month we explore some of Cornwall’s most stunning spas (page 20), offering everything from rural relaxation to beachside beauty breaks, whether for couples only or welcoming families. If this all sounds tempting, you could be in with a chance of winning a spa break by heading over to our competitions section (page 63), with many other great prizes up for grabs. Also in this issue, we take a visit the Isles of Scilly (page 108), this time staying on St Mary’s to discover the thriving art scene and meet some of the local creatives from landscape artists and sculptors to soap makers and jewellery artists. Meanwhile, back on the mainland, we highlight an equally buzzing art world with a bumper gallery section (page 116) and reviews of some of our favourite galleries. We meet debut author Rachel Hickman (page 101) who discusses her fascinating career in publishing, working with Roald Dahl and her love of the Roseland. We also enjoy some proper Cornish hospitality, tucking into a hearty family meal at Rick Stein’s St Merryn pub, The Cornish Arms (page 80). As usual, you’ll find this issue brimming with gorgeous properties to buy (page 32), places to stay on the coast (page 71), great days out with the family, and more ideas for eating out (page 74). Enjoy!

‘Eye-fi’ – the most
luxurious stereogram ever?
The present catches up with the past as Cornwall’s Tutti Audio unveils its ‘designer’ Contemporary Audiophile Stereogram. With vinyl sales once again rocketing, Tutti Audio believes the time has come to re-establish the mid-century delights of an ‘all in one’ Hi-Fi, with a contemporary take on the traditional stereogram. Designer Bob Amos explains: “Since the arrival of ‘separates’, the unsightliness of a rack stacked with grey boxes hasn’t exactly resided in harmony with modern living and entertaining spaces.
Go create
at Tate this summer holiday Drop into Tate St Ives this August and discover a world of creative exploration. There are lots of fun things to fire the imagination of families, with things to see, find and do. The popular ‘Tate Create’ runs throughout the summer holiday and gives all the family the chance to get making! ‘I Spy Tate’ is a fun and free family challenge. Can you find the picture clues in the artworks on display? Find them all and win a prize. Tate St Ives is by the glorious Porthmeor Beach and every Wednesday throughout August you can join in with the ‘Beach Art Explorers’. Get inspired and create your own artwork in these fun, hands-on workshops. Suitable for ages 5-12 . For more information call 01736 796226 or visit www.tate.org.uk/stives
“Our new stereogram is a product of thinking beyond the obvious. It is born out of a love for music, art and theatre.”
With each cabinet taking 200 craftsman hours to build, it’s clearly aimed at a select clientele with high-end spaces in mind. Choice of colour and the ability to incorporate your preferred equipment comes as standard. Bob enthuses: “Trust me, it sounds every bit as good as it looks!” For more information visit www.tuttiaudio.co.uk or email info@tuttiaudio.co.uk
The patio and driveway cleaning system that’s been taking Europe by storm finally arrives in Cornwall Before
After
There’s no feeling quite like returning after a long day to a well-presented home to be proud of. But getting your property to that state can be tricky without the right tools. Surface specialists, Eco Clean Tech, understand the desire to be house proud from the moment you enter the property while wanting to avoid spending hours getting it to this pristine state. That’s why, after selling the product nationally, they
have decided to offer an exclusive cleaning service tailored to Cornwall. With the help of their European partners, they have introduced the Terrazza Mc brush to the region. Designed in Belgium to clean any external and internal surface, this unique and patented system can restore stone, decking, block paving and countless other surfaces with only a small amount of water and no damaging high-pressures. The environmentally friendly company leads the way in patio and drive cleaning, offering a bespoke service enabling homeowners to protect their investment and the property they love. For more information visit www.patioclean.co.uk or call 07817 575450
Tell tale signs that it’s time to replace your wooden fence While we all like to believe our traditional wooden garden fences will last forever, unfortunately, this is rarely the case. Endless maintenance issues can make keeping your fence in good condition a complete nightmare. So is it time to put away your tools and replace instead of repair? Olly Daglish of Colourfence Cornwall has shared the company’s key signs to look out for that could mean it’s finally time to invest in a new fence.
Has your fence started to lean? Perhaps you’ve noticed signs of rotting or discolouring, or even some missing panels. If the repairs are becoming very costly, or if your garden needs a facelift with a smart new backdrop, then it’s time to give the Colourfence team a call now to enjoy a maintenance-free solution that will stand both the test of time and the bold Cornish elements. Trying to avoid care fees? Think twice It’s an unnerving thought that your home might be sold to pay for care home fees. Thousands of pounds that you wanted to go to your children are suddenly paid to local government. After a lifetime of working hard and paying your taxes, it doesn’t seem right.
Don’t miss
Miracle Theatre’s surreal comic adventure touring across Cornwall
It’s not surprising then that firms claiming to help you protect your assets are commonplace. Gemma Sampson of Sampson Solicitors explains the catch. “They are not solicitors,” says Gemma, “they’re cowboys that offer an expensive, flawed solution that is frequently doomed to failure. Local authorities aren’t stupid – they know why people use asset-protection schemes. If they
think the motive was to avoid care fees, they have the power to launch a legal challenge.” If this seems unfair, then the good news is there are tried, tested, and legal ways to help you maximise what your children will receive – so it really does pay to speak to a solicitor. For advice and to discuss your individual circumstances, call 01288 353542 or visit www.sampson-solicitors.co.uk
Time for summer cocktails at Henlys For a while now, we’ve been raving about the delicious dishes coming out of the kitchen at Helston’s hottest new bar and restaurant, Henlys, on Church Street. But it’s not just the food that has us coming back for more. Henlys – run by husband and wife team Sean and Amy Hailwood – is just as renowned for its offerings at the bar, so we’re naturally delighted to hear about the new summer cocktail menu they have launched.
Miracle’s award-winning open-air productions have become a ‘must do’ activity and pop up in unexpected and extraordinary places including gardens, beaches, castles and clifftops. This summer the company returns with ‘The Third Policeman’ by Flann O’Brien, venturing into a world somewhere between Alice in Wonderland and Father Ted, where the earth is not round but sausage-shaped; where eccentric policemen fall in love with bicycles and you can visit eternity via a rickety lift in the heart of rural Ireland. Audiences of all ages enjoy the full ‘open air experience’ and bring along something to sit on and a picnic for a night of theatre under the stars!
As usual, there are lots of local flavours on the menu, including ‘Cornish Bramble’ featuring Cornish gin, lemon juice and raspberry, and the ever rewarding ‘Dark and Stormy’ put together with Kraken spiced rum, Luscombe ginger beer and lime. One thing you can be sure of: the atmosphere is as refreshing and rewarding as the drinks!

Peter Cox partners Enviro-Dogs sniff out rot in Cornwall Peter Cox, the property preservation specialist, has launched a new partnership with Enviro-Dogs – an innovative canine business helping to detect significant structural issues for property owners. The dogs have been specially trained to use their powerful sense of smell to detect the early signs of dry rot, a fungus that attacks wood in relatively dry conditions, which may not be visible to the human eye or could be located in an inaccessible area. The dogs help to form an additional service line for the company, which already provides damp
proofing, and timber treatments, including dry rot and woodworm. Ashley George, CSRT CSSW, senior surveyor at Peter Cox, says: “We are delighted to bring this new service offer to our business in Cornwall. Dry rot can be incredibly destructive, particularly for historical buildings, so early detection is crucial in both residential and commercial properties.” For more information visit www.petercox.com
Luxury handmade huts from Pumphrey and Weston are truly a shepherd’s delight After a number of years working in the off-shore industries, childhood friends Mike and Byron decided, one winter, to try building a shepherd’s hut in Byron’s garden, combining their skills in engineering, computer-aided design (CAD) and wood-working. Byron explains that, while it took a while to put the prototype together, the finished product has become immensely popular on Airbnb, providing him with a healthy additional income.
Why settle for the ordinary when you can have something that is truly beautiful and lovingly pored over by skilled craftspeople? We simply fell in love with the gorgeous designs at Arnold’s Kitchens and had to share our finds with you! This local family business creates high-end bespoke kitchens with individuality. We particularly love this unique polished concrete island, which has been cast solely in one piece. It’s perfect for adding a touch of industrial chic and equally at home in a contemporary kitchen or a more traditional setting, where the concrete is offset by natural wood. Add some handcrafted copper taps and utilitarian lighting, and you’ll have a kitchen that’s the envy of all your friends. Company Director Arnold van den Dolder tells us: “We are passionate about what we do and thrive on providing clients with their dream kitchen.” For more information visit www.arnoldskitchens.co.uk

Within reason, when it comes to the design, furnishing and even the interior décor of their huts, anything goes – Mike and Byron will see to every last detail, creating a space that could easily make £100 per stay, with optional extras allowing you to really tune the space to you and your guests’ needs. Next, Byron continues, after seeing the original hut become such a big hit, the pair decided they’d build one to sell. The rest, as they say, is history! Commissioning bespoke builds for clients who’re looking to get more out of their outside space, Pumphrey and Weston are keen to support the local economy; not only do they provide clients with custom-built huts that quickly pay for themselves before generating additional
income; where possible, they do their utmost to source their materials locally, using nearby services such as the foundry in Wadebridge to forge their signature wheels.

ews & views Going underground at Poldark Mine With the recent heat wave that we’ve experienced, you’ll no doubt be looking for family days out that provide a bit of shade from the sun. One of our favourites is a trip to Poldark Mine, set in four acres of riverside woodland and gardens on the River Cober valley. Cornwall’s only complete underground tin mine, just outside of Helston, really is unique – an exceptionally well-preserved piece of Cornish heritage that offers the chance to discover more about your history, with fun and education in equal measure.

Local and family-run, with over a decade’s experience, this Cornish business is absolutely first class, offering the very best of prices. From start to finish, you can expect a five-star service, from help in choosing the right materials for your day-to-day needs – whether domestic or commercial – right the way through to fitting. Explore the underground labyrinths and caverns, learn about tin production, marvel at the mighty mid-century beam engine and explore the museum and open-air exhibits. The underground tours are considered to be “one of the two most atmospheric mine tours
in Europe,” by the former chairman of English Heritage, perfect for getting those ‘wow’ reactions from the kids. What’s more, a brass band plays at the mine most Sundays from 2pm to 4pm, ensuring your experience of Cornish heritage is accompanied by wonderful traditional music. Up-to-date details can be found on Poldark Mine’s Facebook page. For more information visit www.poldarkmine.org.uk or call 01326 573173
Exciting new additions at Jo&Co Widely known as a destination for home accessories, gifts and women’s clothing, Jo&Co is thrilled to introduce a spectacular new range of furniture. TIME TO
f l e s r u o treat y
Cornwall is the perfect place to experience a relaxing spa in an incredible location. From clifftop retreats to countryside wellbeing, we visit some of our favourite places to unwind and tune out. WORDS BY
Hannah Tapping
W
e are so lucky, here in Cornwall, to have such a choice when it comes to spas and treatments venues. We have adult-only spas ideal for couples or if you want to indulge in some me-time away from the children. Others cater for families so you can chill out while the children are happy playing in the pool. Many are part of luxury hotels so you can extend your experience from a relaxing day to a decadent weekend or combine with lunch or afternoon tea for a foodie treat. More and more, Cornish spas are becoming the destination of choice for those wanting to switch off but still enjoy a spectacular location, and there is a significant amount of investment being made to ensure our spas are up there with the very best. MERCHANTS MANOR in Falmouth has recently undergone a large refurbishment, including the addition of a new swimming pool, gym and wellbeing area. You can let all your cares slip away with a treatment in one of the Linen Rooms. Morocconinspired tiled floors cover underfloor heating and heated beds
radiate that ever-important warmth during your treatment while treatment products from local company Inlight fill the room with the heavenly scent of palmarosa and lavender. Treatments at Merchants are based on centuries-old techniques, drawn from the experience of their world-travelled therapists. For the more energetic, there is a brand new gym and a decent sized swimming pool. A charming barrel sauna sits outside in a pretty courtyard area with a menthol-infused steam room just off the pool. Children are allowed to use the pool during certain times, which means those who want a gentle swim can avoid any exuberant splashing, but families can enjoy themselves as well.

changes from a palette of lush greens during the spring and summer months through to the gentle russets of autumn and winter. A fully equipped gym coupled with a dry sauna and a steam room, enriched with essential oils, means you can’t fail to leave here feeling relaxed. The Cornwall also offers a range of spa breaks so you can totally unwind, putting off returning to reality for that little bit longer. To the north, in St Columb, RETALLACK RESORT AND SPA offers a unique experience. Its luxury, self-catering lodges are a brilliant place to stay with family or friends and with an onsite Wake and Aqua Park, and a FlowRider, children can’t fail to be entertained. So, with the small ones happy, what more of an excuse do you need to pamper yourself? The ESYA spa includes a swimming pool, gym and even fitness classes – at Retallack you can work up a sweat before winding down with one of the transformative treatments. Turn to page 18 to find out more.

Relax in rural splendour at the Budock Vean
If a town location doesn’t appeal then Cornwall is home to some splendid countryside retreats – think lush green gardens, still lakes and tree canopies in which to lie back and relax. Amongst our favourites is the BUDOCK VEAN, VEAN near Mawnan Smith. The swimming pool is housed in a cavernous conservatory with a large open fire at one end that gives a warming focal point on winter days as you rest back on one of the steamer loungers. For warmer days an outdoor hot tub means you can bask in blissful bubbles while watching the clouds scud by. The pamper day at Budock Vean is one of the best we have experienced. Envelope yourself in a sumptuous robe, experience a superb treatment and then sit down to a delicious lunch overlooking the 65-acre estate. If you have enough energy you can even stroll through the grounds down to the Helford river. Discover more on page 28. Further along the south coast, you’ll find THE CORNWALL HOTEL AND CLEARING SPA . Set amongst natural parkland the SPA. infinity pool has a panoramic landscape that

BEAUTY AND THE BEACH If you’re looking for an adults-only spa then the ultra chic, purpose-built and environmentally conscious hotel and spa, perched on the cliff on Mawgan Porth, the SCARLET, should be your destination of choice. In this setting, you can’t help but unwind and forget about the rest of the world. The way the site interacts with the landscape it occupies is a master stroke. Smooth curves and straight lines seamlessly blend inside and out, while an internal uncovered courtyard echoes a Roman villa from the future. The pool is chemical free,
cleaned by the reeds. The whole place has been perfectly realised with luxury and comfort in mind, down to the very last detail. Sat on the clifftop, a stay here feels almost like a spiritual experience, heightened by the array of treatments on offer. The spa focuses on holistic wellbeing and every person’s experience is unique. Our favourite is the Hammam. If you’ve never tried this unique treatment then you should – an invigorating, rehydrating scrub is rinsed off in warm water leaving your skin soft and your muscles relaxed.

For a family-friendly, coastal hotel and spa the POLURRIAN BAY HOTEL is hard to beat. The views from the hotel, which stands majestically on the clifftop in Mullion, are just breathtaking and you have the benefit here of both an indoor and outdoor pool (in summer months). The spa area is well thought out and the pool is surrounded by giant bean bags so you can relax with a book while older children swim, or indulge in the adjacent hot tub. If you have smaller children then you can take advantage of the excellent childcare facilities on site, which include an Ofstedregistered crèche. So much easier to relax when you know your children are being well looked after close by. From clifftop to beachside, the ST MICHAELS HOTEL AND SPA is truly stunning. You’re literally just a stone’s throw from the beach at Gyllyngvase for morning runs and a brand new spa and gym has opened as we go to print. The state-of-the-art gym has been designed with an industrial feel to reflect the nearby Falmouth Docks. Equipment here is all ‘best in class’ so if exercise is your relaxation then you’ll be in seventh heaven as Concept 2 rowing machines sit alongside Matrix treadmills and Keiser spin bikes. A dedicated fitness suite, with on-demand classes, means you can workout whenever you want, a unique Gig Club room offers rowing programmes and there is also a spinning room – the choice is endless! The pool area is liquid luxury at its best with a sauna and heated chill out area, Changing rooms (wet and dry) are vast and the new treatment area, complete with nail bar, exudes coastal elegance.

REGAIN YOUR

life balance
With the pace of day-to-day life ever increasing, we discover how Holistic Health can help you manage stress and learn to relax.
L
ife, at times, can be overwhelming, and despite our best efforts, stress can build up and cause a wide range of physical and emotional difficulties, from anxiety and depression to sleep problems and relationship issues. Recognising that life’s challenges can be tough, Redruth-based Holistic Health is offering a range of stress management courses and therapies, including advice on lifestyle and wellbeing choices. The business is the brainchild of Stress Management and Life Skills consultant Kate King, who has worked as a registered holistic health practitioner in the NHS for over 15 years. Now, Kate wants to offer these services to the wider community. “As a working mum of two young boys, I completely understand the difficulty of trying to juggle work, family and the challenges that life throws at us. It’s easy to often feel like we are losing the plot. Looking after yourself is something that sometimes needs practice.” Combining her extensive knowledge, skills and experience within physical and mental health services, Kate offers a range of stress-management therapies
on an individual, group and corporate basis, helping to improve awareness of stress-related physical and mental health conditions, as well as promoting wellbeing and relaxation. “Being able to take a step back and put things in perspective gives you the opportunity to reevaluate your life,” adds Kate, who is following her own advice after setting up her business with the help from the Outset Cornwall business start-up programme. With work-related stress on the rise and young people facing increasing pressure to perform well, Holistic Health also works with organisations and staff as well as colleges and universities, providing tailored group skills and information sessions. “Learning new skills can help manage the stress of daily life,” explains Kate. “Less stress makes you happier, healthier and more refreshed, and helps you regain your life balance.”

Finished to an exacting standard, 2 Seaspell simply oozes quality and individuality – you can tell instantly that this home was a labour of love, designed and built by people who know their trade, and with a desire to impress. Underfloor heating, quality integrated appliances and Porcelanosa ceramic floor and wall tiling all add to the sense of luxury throughout. Offering the very best in modern, openplan living, this duplex apartment is wonderfully bright and spacious, with one room seamlessly flowing to the next – making it an extremely sociable home, perfect for family living and entertaining. In our view, the best homes in Cornwall are those that effortlessly combine indoor and outdoor living to make the most of the surrounding scenery. 2 Seaspell does this
with ease, with its own courtyard garden, and two balconies to take in the fresh Cornish air. Indeed, perhaps the only thing that eclipses the house itself is the location it inhabits. utside, the grounds offer plenty of space for family games in the sun, with a lawn that’s perfect for honing your golf skills. Indoors, a heated pool and Jacuzzi are perfect for unwinding after a strenuous day of keeping up with the kids. The interior is simply superb and comfortable to the last touch. Modern features such as an impressive home cinema and full-sized snooker room really round off the home-entertainment package – ideal for rainy days when exploring the area’s many golden, sandy beaches isn’t an option. On viewing, you’ll be mesmerised by the open stonework in the well-fitted kitchen and the two-tiered breakfast bar. Coming with its own Aga, the kitchen bridges the home’s modern feel with a much more traditional farmhouse ambience, and is a wonderful space for entertaining guests while you add the finishing touches to the evening’s courses. If you’re a sailing enthusiast, you’ll be pleased to know you can keep your vessel undercover in the boat store, and if you’d like to make some additional income, or you’d simply enjoy the benefit of having separate accommodation for guests or dependent family, there are two beautifully built log cabins in the grounds. hat better way to savour the inimitable Cornish coast than from the balcony of your very own luxury house? We are always on the lookout for stunning properties in beautiful locations to showcase. Holywell Bay on the north coast is about as stunning as it gets. The famed Gull Rocks provide an eye-catching marker but the true feature of this Cornish haven is the expanse of golden sand nestled within a backdrop of rolling dunes and striking cliffs. Fortunately, the team at local family-run company Legacy Properties are as passionate about luxury coastal living as we are, and as is immediately evident from just a brief glance at the stunning coastal portfolio.
The Rocks is an exciting development of ten luxury houses. Nine of the houses will have four bedrooms while the tenth will have five. Carefully designed and built to enhance the owners’ living experience, these houses offer a perfect blend of luxury living and coastal calm with clever use of clean lines and a design to complement the incredible surrounding landscape. The dining/living area boasts stylish, open-plan living, while details such as ceiling mounted speakers help create an environment ideal for entertaining. In the kitchen you’ll find top-of-the-range appliances, quartz worktops and feature lighting, while the bathrooms feature Mandarin Stone tiles and Crosswater fittings – these are homes with impeccable taste!

et in the centre of the village of Ruan Lanihorne, opposite the parish church, the current build is believed to have been completed during the 19th century, when it replaced the original thatched structure. For several-hundred years a pub has existed here, offering locals and wayfarers alike the chance to take shelter, warm themselves, quench a thirst and tuck into some hearty Cornish pub grub. The current owners, who have run the establishment for 13 years, have created a highly-popular and incredibly successful business and, by placing The Kings Head on the market, they’ve really presented an opportunity like no other, with the potential for a new owner like you to place like your own unique stamp on an alreadywell-loved community hub. Just look in the CAMRA Good Pub Guide, the Pubs and Inns in Cornwall Guide or the Good Pub Guide, and see for yourself! Business for The Kings Head really does flourish, especially in the summer when the holiday hordes flock to Cornwall to make their seaside escape. And, with three spacious bedrooms, gardens, terraces and off-road parking, it’s truly the ideal home for a family looking to enjoy the ultimate work-life balance. But don’t just take our word for it, contact the team at Philip Martin and arrange your viewing, before someone else beats you to it.

A GREAT FIRST WORDS BY

n Martyn Rohrs (left) and Matthew Rowe (right)
Property agents Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe reveal more about their mission to redefine the Cornish property market.
t feels like only last week when I first met Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe to learn more about their recently launched property agency that puts lifestyle firmly at its heart. Six months on, Martyn and Matthew remain warm and affable, confident in their approach, and pleased by the positive reception it has garnered. “The business has been exceptionally well received by both buyers and sellers,” says Matthew. “People genuinely seem to enjoy and engage with the way we present properties.” While this is said with pride and belief, they are clearly delighted that the hard work is paying off. Indeed, Rohrs & Rowe, with a combined collective experience of 40 years in the high-end property business, frequently find themselves in the upper ranks of the online property searches, a result they put down to the strong brand identity they have forged, built on powerful visuals – including incredible aerial videos – coupled with a strong marketing presence. They recognise that, with so much competition out there, you have to do something unique in order to cut
through the noise. “Our highly visual format of marketing works really well on social media,” adds Martyn. “We’re embracing the future.” As they explain, a key component of preparing every house for sale is showcasing what is most compelling about it. They have an uncanny ability to identify fresh and dramatic angles that others would overlook – particularly in the way their aerial photographs are framed, highlighting nearby features of interest, from local beaches and shops to stunning scenery, emphasising the lifestyle benefits that the new owner will enjoy. Success lies in the little details, drawing out a home’s personality, using the images to take prospective buyers on a journey of discovery. “Smaller details like specific fixtures and fittings are indicative of the bigger picture,” explains Martyn. “Buyers, particularly from affluent areas, want to see that a house has been invested in; quality is what stands out.” The results speak for themselves. Citing just one example, they found a London based buyer within weeks for a beautiful house in Truro that had previously been listed for 18

months to no avail. Matthew continues: “As the old adage goes, you only get one chance to make a good first impression. It’s often said, but so true and frequently overlooked.” If you are considering selling in the next 12 months, Martyn and Matthew’s advice is to get in touch as early as possible, to ensure this impression is as good as it can be – don’t wait until you are ready to sell. Equally, with the gorgeous weather we’ve been enjoying recently, now is the perfect time to capture drone video footage and photography of your home and its location in the best possible light. With Rohrs & Rowe you can always expect invaluable advice, and frank, honest feedback on how best to prepare your house to maximise impact. Even if you don’t plan to hit the market until next spring, bank the content now while the sun shines. Unrestrained by traditional concepts of selling, R&R are ever keen to reflect modern buying habits; seducing purchasers and creating more powerful and emotional connections. This technique is equally effective in off-market sales. Indeed, whether or not

on the open market, it’s essential to present your home in a way that triggers a positive response. There’s a growing desire among some buyers and sellers, especially highprofile clients at the higher end of the market, for a discreet, under-the-radar service. R&R have the marketing techniques and contacts to enable this highly targeted, private approach. Once again, I’m left with the distinct impression that these guys really know their craft, offering not only a fresh perspective but a sincere love of what they do. “Whether buyer or seller, it’s so important to take the time to listen and really understand what they need, not just what they want,” says Matthew. We all love a good story to immerse ourselves in. With Rohrs & Rowe, you can guarantee you’ll be gripped from the introduction right through to the dramatic conclusion.

We catch up with Elaine Skinner, founder of Camellia Interiors, one of Cornwall’s only BIID qualified and accredited practices. Tell us about Camellia Interiors “I set up Camellia in 2003 and now, we have two showrooms in Truro and Rock, allowing us to serve the north coast as well as central Cornwall. We’re planning for a third showroom in the next few years to complete the triangle. The practice employs a team of 16 full-time designers and contractual staff, and we stock a wide range of quality paint, paper and fabrics, available at both locations. Impressive! When it comes to individual projects, would you say you have a set style or do you approach each differently? “No. We approach each project with an open book. We’re always looking for new creative solutions, adapting to suit each individual project.” Is it this approach, you think, that makes Camellia so unique? “I believe it comes down to process, and a confidence to question the brief. In other words, the difference is how we do it. We’re fastidious managers of the process, delivering with tight procurement, scheduling and attention to detail. Our clients hire us for our insight, expertise and experience and we deliver on their behalf. We’re not ‘yes’ people, so we’re also not afraid to question a brief if we don’t think it’s right - this invariably wins us business.”
paper and fabrics in both our showrooms, so clients can pop in to get on-the-spot advice, or arrange a home visit.” What are you currently working on?
n Elaine and co. offer a full design service for clients in the south west
“We’ve a number of soft furnishing jobs on at the moment, ranging from curtain replacements to a client whose new house needs window treatments in every room! We also have several furniture jobs, where a client has purchased a second home and needs furniture for the whole house. At present, we’ve got four full sized projects, where we’re doing everything, all running at different stages; one in Newlyn, another in Polzeath, one in St Mawes and one in Truro.” That’s a lot of work, but speaking with Elaine it’s obvious that they relish a busy workload and are passionate about what they do!

We offer: a bespoke curtains and blinds service, spatial planning and furniture sourcing as well as consulting on decorative schemes for individual rooms or whole houses. You can choose to carry out the work yourself, or use our full project management service, which combines the delivery and build of your design scheme, working to an agreed budget and deadline. Cornwall BRINGING
TO YOU
Y
We learn about the exciting expansion plans of Oltco, the inspiring flooring company taking a little Cornish magic out to the rest of the country.
ou know when you’ve arrived in Cornwall. It’s hard to put a finger on exactly why, but you get that bright, life-affirming feeling as you cross the Tamar westward. There’s just something about the place that you won’t find anywhere else… not just the beautiful scenery and clean air, but a way of doing things, a unique character and proud identity that’s indefinably Cornish. It permeates into the people and the businesses too – inspiring companies like Oltco, the Newquay based flooring specialists with a national reputation. When I met director Johnny Pearce and some of the team a few months back it was so refreshing to witness a company that does things properly, and has got the balance just right. Clearly they genuinely love what they do, and want to get the best results for clients every time, but they also appreciate the importance of time for yourself and the family – everything they do is geared towards lifestyle. This was immediately evident by the showstopping revamp of Hotel California’s outdoor spaces and pool area. The hotel, beautifully positioned overlooking the Gannel estuary,
needed a reliable solution for a balcony that was flooding, as well as a safe system for its swimming pool. Oltco’s resin-bound flooring was perfect – being porous it doesn’t puddle, it’s seamless, and it’s extremely low maintenance. What’s more it looks great – a high-end finish to complement the high-end performance. The team chose Oltco’s own ‘Crantock’ blend, to maintain a local flavour – indeed, from a distance the effect is uncannily reminiscent of the nearby golden sand that entices you to the beach. But far from being just a local phenomenon, the company’s values and ambitious service and products have already drawn customers from all over the country, including several high-profile clients. Oltco is now boldly taking it one step further, on a mission to bring a little slice of the Cornish magic out to the rest of the UK. The ambitious plans start with the opening of a new Blackpool-based franchise, headed up by fellow Director Tom Stringer’s cousin, Jonathan Stringer, and Alex Hoskisson. Jonathan knows the business well, having been there at the very start, 12 years ago when Oltco was first founded. For the team, he really was the perfect candidate to export

the Oltco brand. “All decisions are based on the ‘feel good factor’,” explains Johnny. “In Jonathan, we really couldn’t have found a better person as our pilot to take our brand and values out nationwide.” Jonathan adds: “At Oltco Blackpool, we strive to deliver the absolute best quality and service to our customers in the north. We adhere wholeheartedly to the Oltco family ethos of establishing lasting relationships with our customers by exceeding their expectations and gaining their trust through exceptional products, performance and aftercare. This is an exciting time for us and we are looking forward to making some big changes in people’s lives.” The Blackpool business follows the very same format that has proved so successful here in Cornwall. For a start, they have exclusive access to the company’s unique market-leading products. All of Oltco’s bespoke resin-bound gravel blends are named after beautiful Cornish beaches – including a few of our favourites such as Kynance, Porthminster and Fistral – so those who have visited and have happy memories of their toes in the sand really can take a bit of Cornwall home with them. In fact, Oltco can even create bespoke blends entirely for you, perhaps evocative of a secret beach you discovered all to yourself.
The Oltco team work with the franchisees closely, sharing their good old-fashioned Cornish values, expertise, services and knowhow. Key to success ultimately lies in the best training and failsafe systems, combined with a strong marketing strategy – the attention to detail for clients, such as boxes of chocolates for the client, all the little pieces that make up the bigger picture. Indeed, just as the Oltco team are meticulous about the job and finish itself, so they are meticulous in the aftercare, and client relationships. With Oltco, you’ll never have to worry about the hard sell – the team have a very relaxed approach and won’t pressure people into using their services. “For us its about growing the brand – it’s a long-term plan,” explains Johnny, “teaming up with likeminded people, who get what we’re about, sharing our ethos and values.” If this sounds tempting to you, and you’re looking for a dynamic new business venture with Cornish values and products at its heart, why not get in touch with Johnny and the team now?

Styl&eFUNCTION We speak to Andrew Cook, Managing Director of Just Shutters, who gives us his guide to beautiful shutters.
A What’s more, shutters add value to your home at resale and save you money on your energy bills
ndrew Cook founded Just Shutters South West in 2011 after discovering the fantastic benefits of Plantation Shutters and wanting to share his passion with customers locally. Over the past six years Andrew has built an unsurpassed reputation for quality and service across Devon and Cornwall and shares with us his top reasons to choose shutters for your home…
Beauty
Bye bye allergens Shutters don’t hold dust, mites, mildews, spores and allergens the way fabrics and untreated woods do. They are perfect for those with allergies and asthma, who are trying to reduce the pollutants held in fabrics.
Ok, so you might still have to wash your clothes, but as for your window dressings – they will be as fresh as a daisy! The occasional rub with an ostrich feather and shutters are as good as new.
Practicality
Long-term value
Privacy without the nets Although net curtains should be banished to the 1970s, many of us still resort to them as most curtain and blind solutions don’t offer us light and privacy at the same time. Not so with shutters, however – you can let the sunshine in whilst keeping prying eyes out!
Timeless quality
í BELOW Plantation Shutters
No more laundry!
Look at the elegant, sleek, timeless lines of these stunning shutters and allow yourself to imagine them in your home… where would you have them? What colour or style would you choose?
Consider the practical benefits of shutters, They don’t warp, bleach or fade; they are easy to maintain and wipe clean, and are child safe, with no trip hazards or pull cords. They allow light in without the glare, offer privacy, heat insulation and energy efficiency (over and above blinds or curtains). They are also perfect for moist and humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Just Shutters offers a lifetime guarantee on all its shutters. What’s more, shutters add value to your home at resale and save you money on your energy bills, improving energy efficiency and reducing heat loss through your windows by up to 60%. So, these are just some of the reasons to choose shutters – why not give the Just Shutters team a call and see what they can do for your home?

g n i l ee f m r A wa INSIDE If you’ve a burning desire to improve the way you heat your home, Eden Hearth and Home has the solution for you.
H
ere in Cornwall, where many properties are ‘off the grid’, choosing a heating system for your home can be a difficult decision, with many factors to consider. I speak with the team at Eden Hearth and Home, who make it immediately clear that, when it comes to heating your home, electricity is the fuel of the future. Walking around the showroom in Goonhavern, there’s a huge range of electric heating solutions to choose from – so many, I don’t know where to start – from those ideal for a conservatory, right the way through to smart systems that, once connected to your WiFi, allow you to control your heating remotely. This means that if you’re at work and the temperature’s set to drop, you can be sure that the house is nice and cosy before you even cross the threshold! This sounds great, so I ask the team what the real benefits of electric heating are. They explain that, firstly, it’s quick and easy to install, with minimal disruption and no

unsightly pipe work. Secondly, they tell me, many people automatically think of inefficient storage or convection heaters, which they assure me, the range available at Eden is streets ahead of. Sounds good to me! Company owners Tracy and Tony tell me how they’ve seen a huge rise in demand for electric heating systems, to replace out-dated and inefficient storage heaters, over the last two decades. Indeed, there isn’t a question about electric heating that they can’t answer, a statement that also goes for their team of installers. Made up of industry professionals who know their trade inside out, the Eden team begin by carrying out a full survey of your property, identifying which solution is best suited to your unique requirements. Once that’s out the way and you’ve settled on which new system to go for, they can even offer a full fitting service, meaning that every step of the process is neatly and efficiently taken care of for you. The best part is it’s all fully backed by their warranty and product
guarantee! It’s clear then that Eden Hearth and Home is a one-stop shop for all your modern heating needs; but it’s so much more than that. Perhaps, for example, you fancy something a little more traditional. If so, the team specialises in bespoke natural stone and marble fire surrounds, cutting and crafting them to your exact specification. They’ll also carry out any building work required, from plastering and electrics, to gas fitting and chimney sweeping, going the extra mile to ensure that both you and your home are left feeling warm inside. So, get yourself to Goonhavern and take a look – you never know, it may spark your next home project!

g n i m r Transfo CORNWALL’S COASTLINE
We meet Neil Puttock, founder of Boavista Windows, who tells us about his company’s new, industry-leading range of window frames.
BELOW ê Meet Neil, founder of Boavista Windows
F
rom Crackington Haven and Sennen Cove to Porthmeor Beach and the Carrick Roads, Cornwall’s splendour, geology and stunning coastlines continue to attract countless holidaymakers. The glorious sea views here are second-tonone, but what about those from the sea, looking back inland? Even away from the coast, the Cornish landscape exudes charm and character, meaning that wherever you live, there’s so much to see and take in, even from behind the windows of your home. However, in a region that’s beaten by tumultuous and often unpredictable weather fronts, homes can often take a beating, and even those that are relatively new can soon be worn down by the continual blowing of sand, salty winds and ferocious rain. We catch up with Neil Puttock, Managing Director at Boavista Windows, who tells us: “As someone who’s worked with windows for over 20 years, you could argue that I’m particularly sensitive to the naturally occurring damage that our windows take. However, countless conversations I’ve had with people over the last 20 years lead me to believe that I’m not alone!” Neil recently launched Boavista – Europe’s first full range of fibreglass window frames. Boavista sets new industry standards when it comes to sustainability, durability and performance, meaning there’s now a way to prevent your windows from becoming a blot on Cornwall’s property landscape!
But what makes these frames so good? Neil explains: “Fibreglass is exceptionally hardwearing, highly rot and corrosionresistant and retains its finish for years due to its inherent strength and ability to hold paint. It’s also 100 per cent recyclable, making this new range environmentally friendly, too!” In terms of design, fibreglass opens up a world of possibilities due to its strength and stability, which enable it to hold large surface areas of glass, bypassing the need to produce and fit specialist, structural glass. So, if you wish to make glass a prominent feature of your coastal property, you can do so without incurring huge expense. To sum up, Neil says: “Fibreglass will help bring about the window revolution, replacing uPVC and aluminium windows with a stylish, sustainable and sturdy alternative. Who knows? Two decades from now, when fibreglass frames are a standard choice among Cornish homeowners, perhaps we’ll have completely forgotten about the unsightly problems of our current frames? One thing’s for sure, our coastline will look much better without them!”

M
any people dream of building their own home. It’s the ideal opportunity to get things exactly how you want them. Of course we love old properties with an existing narrative to add to, but often the downside is making it work for modern family living. With building a home from scratch however, you have the chance to create your very own story from the offset. When embarking on a new build, it’s easy to let the ideas run away with themselves, focussing on cushions and colour schemes before you’ve considered the foundations. Alternatively, you may become so consumed with the ‘nitty-gritty’ that you forget the project is about much more than simply bricks and mortar – it’s about creating that welcoming space that belongs to you. A successful new build hinges on getting the right balance between the bigger picture and the finishing details. One key element you should definitely consider before the first brick is even laid, is your heating. While the fire itself may be one of the last things to go in, it’s fundamental to consider where it is going to be positioned.

Ensure that this is accounted for in the plans. In particular bear in mind the positioning, ventilation, ‘flow’ of the rooms and any outside views that you may want to capitalise on. With so much to consider, it pays to get the experts in at the earliest opportunity. I recently caught up with Simon Breckon of Kernow Fires to learn more. “Don’t make the stove an afterthought,” explains Simon, “it has to be thought about from the offset to avoid costly mistakes. We work very closely with the architect from early on in the build and will regularly look at a set of plans and suggest changes where we think appropriate.” Simon’s team draw on their extensive experience of installing premium stoves in some of Cornwall’s most beautiful homes. They will help you arrive at the best choice for you. They know what works proportionately in a room, as well as the technical and practical aspects that you or I would probably never even think to consider. “It’s always useful to have something to roll with – ideas, moods, ways of understanding the client’s tastes in order to find the right solution. The fire needs to look like it belongs there.” While Simon works tirelessly to achieve the best result, he’s not simply a ‘yes man’ – if he thinks there’s a more suitable option or that it could be repositioned to maximise impact, then he will happily say so. After all, it’s much better – and more cost effective – to challenge thinking before installation rather than to correct it afterwards. Simon is keen to stress: “It’s not to make life easier for us – this is never on the agenda – it’s all about making it right for you.” Indeed, some of these decisions have created a lot more work for Simon’s team. But it’s his belief that when the project is complete, the fire will still be there and loved for many years to come. And of course, Kernow Fires will always be
there to continue providing support and servicing. Simon has a huge base of contacts from architects to designers, frequently travelling across Europe to keep up-to-date with the latest technology and products. Along with sister company, Kernow Metals (see image top left), the team have a broad range of building expertise, spanning all aspects of a build or renovation. This enables them to give invaluable advice and to offer a comprehensive project management service, creating bespoke solutions for the home. Indeed, many of the team are ex-builders, plasterers, and decorators. So with all the skills they need ‘in-house’ to see you through your project, the Kernow Fires team keep a close eye on quality and ensure a consistent finish. This also helps with protecting your guarantees on the build. In any new build, staying on budget is always an issue, but the stove of your dreams need not cost the earth. Kernow Fires can tailor options to achieve the desired result, taking key elements and capturing the essence on a budget that works for you. Ultimately, with Kernow Fires you can always expect a quality, professional service from an independent company that is passionate about what it does, from the ideas to the aftercare. To finish, as Simon proudly reminds me: “We invest a great deal of time into developing the shop and our customer skills, to ensure that everyone gets the best advice and service possible.”

COASTAL MEETS
Scandinavian Coastal Spaces rebrands its stunning store in Wadebridge, showcasing the wonderful possibilities when fusing Cornish coastal property with simplistic Scandinavian décor.

S
ince opening in Wadebridge in November 2015 as Coastal Spaces – a business that fuses property design and retail – the team has grown and expanded its range of Cornish and Scandinavian products. Now, owner Isabel Humphreys tells us, the store has been rebranded, emphasising the team’s passion for all things Scandinavian. Along with her partner, Sean, who specialises in contemporary house design, Isabel explains: “Inspired by the Cornish coastline around us and Scandinavian heritage – a Swedish mum and many happy childhood years growing up in Sweden – we lovingly hand-select all of our items and source directly from some of the best Cornish and Scandinavian designer makers.” The couple works alongside Katie Parkinson, a Textile Design graduate from Falmouth University, who adds her passion, knowledge and expertise to further inspire the company’s product selection – inspiration that Isabel and Sean simply wouldn’t be without. Coastal Scandi carefully sources its brands, supporting those with a story behind them. Isabel frequently travels to Stockholm and London for trade shows and exhibitions, as well as attending local craft fairs, supporting local independent individuals and their
unique products. From Scandinavia the team sources handmade brushes made by visually impaired craftsmen, as well as gorgeous kitchen and home textiles made from 100% organic cotton, alongside kitchen and tableware, soft furnishings, bath and body and lifestyle products. It’s evident, then, that for the whole team, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. But it’s not just interior design and furniture that you’ll find at the all-new Coastal Scandi showroom – the team has even begun stocking Scandinavian food, including organic jams, cordials, traditional crispbreads and sweets, making it a foodie haven, too! Isabel tells us: “We’ve created a beautiful, calm and contemporary space to showcase the highest quality products that we love. We’re passionate about Scandinavian design, style and simplicity; interested in function and form, and we love nothing more than offering our clients the chance to choose a home décor that has a timeless quality about it, with pieces that are made to last forever.”

KERNOW
Calling Y
We speak to the team at Cornish Traditional Cottages to discover the top reasons to buy a holiday home in Cornwall.
ou may have already made up your mind. You may not need us to reiterate why this glorious county of Kernow is a great investment option. But if you’re still pondering the benefits of property investment in Cornwall, we catch up with George Edward-Collins of Cornish Traditional Cottages to help answer your questions. “Kernow’s climate, geography, coastline and rich panoply of attractions cumulate to make the Duchy Britain’s number one holiday destination,” explains George. “Once you’ve been, it’s likely you’ll return again and again. The idea of owning your very own home here tends to come from a longing to linger. Equally, the demand for staying in a Cornish holiday home continues to grow. As more visitors descend on the county, more accommodation is required.” As George tells us, whether you buy property to create a home away from home in Cornwall or to provide just that for paying guests, it’s typically a sound investment. “There is certainly no lack of demand for holiday homes and the many attractions that Kernow has to offer. The Cornish
economy thrives on tourism, and visitor attractions large and small continue to grow across the county. With that, access to all parts of our diverse region is being improved all the time, making it ever easier to reach the lesser known and often more sought-after spots.” Location, location, location. That’s what they say. But in reality, location is just one of three main factors that must be scrutinised to ensure the financial success of a holiday home venture. “The honeypot locations like St Ives, Bude, Newquay or Padstow attract more visitors and command higher prices, but there are obvious pros and cons to buying there. Demand for housing and investment properties will likely reflect demand from holidaymakers therefore house prices will be higher in popular holiday spots.” Just because a location isn’t teeming with tourists today doesn’t make it an unviable investment opportunity, says George. “Consider its proximity to attractions – the quality of road and public transport access – as well as ease of access to amenities, beaches and the coastal path. Something as simple as being along the Camel Trail will increase

the accessibility and appeal of a property to guests, because getting out and about will be easy.” While coastal towns attract more visitors in the height of summer than more rural localities, for shoulder and low seasons rentals, rural retreats carry huge appeal, especially with walkers, ramblers, cyclists and the second largest audience of guests: dog owners. Consider whether or not you want to offer dog-friendly accommodation. Pet owners are a good source of bookings, outside of prime season – when Cornwall beaches are more likely to be open to dogs. It’s also a bit of a nobrainer for rural properties or those close to the coast path. “Cumulatively, these factors will contribute to helping you decide which property you buy, how you decorate and furnish it, what you create as your unique selling points for marketing purposes, what you’re able to charge for it throughout the year and what occupancy rate you can expect.” Cornish Traditional Cottages offers holiday homeowners support throughout the holiday letting process. The team often attend viewings to offer
a perspective on the rental potential of a property and can hold the hand of holiday homeowners as much or as little as they need. “From simply marketing and managing bookings through to full service property management and maintenance,” says George, “we bring out over 50 years of cottage holiday experience to the table. For new clients, we offer a five-year investment plan that creates a low entry point for your marketing budget, which increases slowly as your business grows.” If you are considering holiday home ownership in Cornwall now or in the future, why not get in touch? If you’d like advice or tips on any aspect of holiday letting, call Charmian, George or Alison at Cornish Traditional Cottages or pop in to the office in Wadebridge.

And, when the stars are out, you’ll relish the chance to sink into the state-of-the-art hot tub with a glass of Prosecco and your favourite tunes, gazing up at Cornwall’s famously starry sky. Cosy and welcoming
1 Greenway, Kingsand and Cawsand The twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand are exquisite gems on the south Cornwall coast – and they’re remarkably little known (much to the satisfaction of smugglers of yore). But few who find themselves in the Italianesque setting ever forget the beauty and tranquillity of this unspoiled Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Sheltered by a lush wooded headland, the traditional fishing villages that time forgot cluster around pretty beaches where you can step almost from the door of your cottage on to the sand and pebbles to dabble with your net in the rockpools or take a dip in the safe bathing waters (swimming buoys guide you in summer months). Helpful Holidays, the West Country cottage experts, offer a wide choice of accommodation here for up to 12 guests, with a notable new addition being 1 Greenway, a dear little 18th century cottage for three. Tucked quietly away down twisty donkey-width lanes, it’s a perfect romantic hideaway for couples or a welcoming base for small families. The family-friendly pubs, cafés, shops and beaches are just round the corner and there’s a sunny little terrace for eating alfresco. The open-plan living space is cosy and welcoming, the beams and thick, knobbly whitewashed walls little changed from days when the muffled hooves of brandyladen ponies trotted quietly by in the darkness, but now complemented by every modern comfort you could wish for. Climb the narrow, steep stairs curving up to two cool, relaxing bedrooms, a double and a single.

PROPER CORNISH This month our restaurant critic heads north to The Cornish Arms, to find a traditional pub with a modern, family-friendly twist.

ith so many exceptional foodie destinations in Cornwall you don’t have to travel far from where you live or where you are staying to find delicious food, served in stunning surroundings. Living in west Cornwall, we are certainly guilty of only eating out in our favourite local restaurants, so thought it high time we took ourselves out of our comfort zone and drove north in search of our dinner. We had decided to head towards Padstow, not to eat in the infamous fishing village, but to try a family-friendly pub we had heard of in the nearby village of St Merryn, of the Rick Stein group. For me trying somewhere new always sets the nerves jangling slightly, especially as with a young family eating out is a rare treat as opposed to the norm. On the drive there, I questioned whether we had done the right thing… will it be as good as our favourite pizza restaurant, will the children be catered for, will they like the food? I guess that’s why we chose The Cornish Arms as our family foodie foray, comforted in the knowledge that, with Rick Stein behind it, we wouldn’t be disappointed. And we weren’t. At 5pm on a wet Thursday evening we weren’t expecting an already, half-full car park. You can’t book

at The Cornish Arms, hence our early arrival time, and we weren’t the only people looking for a family evening meal. You enter through the old part of the pub that has a traditional bar area with open fire, looking like it would be very cosy on a winter’s evening. A large bookcase and an array of board games suggested this was an area where people can while away a few hours when the weather is inclement enjoying good beer and good company. Beyond this it was great to see a group of locals enjoying an after work pint, proof that the Rick Stein brand is complementing rather than ostracising. We waited to be seated by our friendly host and were given a choice of table either in the old part of the pub or the new conservatory. We chose the conservatory and as we were shown to our table noted that there were already groups of families and couples with dogs (Chalky must have insisted that The Cornish Arms was dog-friendly!) tucking in to their supper. The conservatory dining room is spacious, with beautiful, oak roof timbers created by the traditional craftspeople at Carpenter Oak. We sat by the window looking out over the expansive beer garden that must be a glorious place when the sun shines; sadly we were

being treated to an evening of Cornish gales and driving rain! Being a St Austell Brewery pub, their classic ales are all available on tap, so a pint of Tribute was the order of the day for my hubby, soft drinks for the children and for me a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The wine list is carefully chosen and there is always a recommendation from Rick on the specials board. The menu isn’t overwhelming – for me a perfect number of seasonal dishes to choose from. Refreshingly, although there is a dedicated children’s menu, all of the dishes are available as smaller portions so no-one’s choice is limited. I opted for one of the daily specials, a Goan fish curry served with basmati rice and a chapati. My fish was succulent and the curry fragrant and perfectly spiced. Hubby chose the steak and ale pie that came with lashings of buttery mash, broccoli and gravy and was deemed the perfect accompaniment to a pint and a wet, stormy night! The children wouldn’t be swayed from the burger and chips, but it must have been good as the table fell silent for a while and both cleared their plates. With a young family pudding is always a highlight and again you can have small portions of anything on the dessert menu.
My daughter’s cheesecake was a hit, while a huge sticky, toffee pudding with Cornish ice cream kept my son quiet for at least another five minutes! It’s always the cheeseboard for me and it didn’t disappoint – generous portions of three local cheeses served with Rick Stein’s signature crackers and beetroot chutney finished off a lovely meal. By the time we left, every table was full and there were people perusing menus in the bar waiting for a table. The popularity of The Cornish Arms may come in part from the Rick Stein name, but for me the great service, delicious food and family-friendly atmosphere are what will bring us back again – this time hopefully in the Cornish sunshine!

or husband and wife team, Anna and Stew Eddy, it’s been five wonderful years since they took over The Square at Porthleven. With Anna heading up front of house and Stew working his magic in the kitchen you couldn’t wish for a better team. Stew is a Cornish boy, but started his illustrious career as a chef in kitchens north of the Tamar. Earning a Michelin star at Hunstrete House, Stew was also at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir, where coincidentally Anna also worked, and he studied under Michael Caines. It’s these fine dining influences that bring elegance and exquisite taste to the modern British cuisine that is served at The Square. Prior to owning The Square, Anna and Stew were at the award-winning Victoria Inn in Perranuthnoe. “We had a wonderful time running The Vic,” explains Anna, “but with two small children I look back now and wonder how we did it.” Running the bar, restaurant and letting rooms at The Vic was a 24/7 job for the couple and there came a point when it was time for a change of pace. “We now have a wonderful Head Chef, Bryok Williams, who runs the kitchen and Holly Bowden, who runs front of house, which allows myself and Stew the luxury of doing less hours, giving us more time to spend with our family – although the office work still has
to be done in between school pick-us!” laughs Anna. Not ones to rest on their laurels though, Anna and Stew have also added an ice cream parlour and deli to The Square. The delicious ice cream is made on the premises, using seasonal local ingredients. In fact, as we are talking to Anna, Stew heads out to pick fresh elderflowers to flavour the next batch. They also sell their own pickles and condiments in the deli. So, if you eat in the restaurant and have particularly enjoyed the apple and raisin chutney that accompanies the Cornish duck liver pate you can pop next door and pick up a jar or two. The menu changes daily depending on what’s in season and you’ll be faced with the difficult choice between delicious dishes such as Goan style fish, tiger prawn and sweet potato curry or Newlyn turbot fillet with early Cornish potatoes. Dishes are refreshingly uncomplicated but packed with flavour and on a sunny day you can’t beat lunch on the terrace accompanied by a glass of something cold. Booking is advisable, as we’re not the only ones who love The Square at Porthleven!

The Cornish Moonshine Company celebrates the story of a very Cornish non-conformist, Tom the Smuggler.
W
e speak with the Cornish Moonshine team, who tell us a story about smuggling in Cornwall, explaining how non-conformity and following one’s own path has led to the success of many, including this up-and-coming, bootlegging Cornish liquor business. Ask anyone to describe an 18thcentury smuggler, and they’ll probably tell you about a Cornishman called Tom. He rolls a couple of kegs up a moonlit beach and hides them in a cave, before hawking the brandy round the village. Everybody knows him as Tom the Smuggler, and his neighbours distract the revenue man at the front door while Tom rolls his barrels out the back. Cornwall was (and still is, to many) like its own country, separate from the rest of England. Cornish men and women are staunchly proud of their heritage and this ‘patriotism’ allowed Tom the Smuggler to flourish. Tom looked after his fellow Cornish folk, and asked them to turn and face the wall as he approached. That way, if he was arrested, the villagers could truthfully swear that they had seen nothing, for hearing was not evidence enough. Smuggling under the night’s sky, when only the true locals could navigate the Cornish coastline by the moon’s light alone, Tom’s illicitly smuggled alcohol soon
became dubbed ‘moonshine’. Tom was a true nonconformist and, in the words of John Kenneth Galbraith: “Humanity’s most valuable assets have been the non-conformists. Were it not for he who insists upon attempting to find new ways of bettering things, the world would have known little progress, indeed.” The team tells us: “We’ve created Cornish Moonshine to tell Tom’s story, and to represent the non-conformists of this day and age. We don’t believe in following the crowd, and would rather pave our own path in our own category of spirit drink. Cornish Moonshine isn’t a vodka or a gin, nor is it a whisky. It stands alone as a grain spirit made from 100% Cornish barley, and we couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve created. So, here’s to Tom the Smuggler, and cheers to our fellow nonconformists!”

eorge Melly, Donovan, Barbara Dickson, Elkie Brooks, Billy Bragg and Fairport Convention are among the famous names to have graced the St Ives September Festival since it began in 1978. But, as well as attracting the stars, the 15-day festival provides a valuable late-season tourist boost for the town. While many seaside towns are sliding quietly into autumn, more than 300 music and arts events ensure St Ives remains vibrant deep into September. The volunteerrun festival opens on 9th September with the first of two Saturdays packed with street entertainment. From folk music to films, poetry to pottery, theatre, open art studios, walks, talks and a pit-fired ceramic demonstration alongside the surfers on Porthmeor Beach, St Ives Festival delivers a broad spectrum of events. Guildhall attractions include four BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners: John McCusker, Show of Hands, Looe-based Sam Kelly of The Changing Room and Cara Dillon. And The Ronnie Scott’s All-Stars, from the famous London jazz club, return for two more Western Hotel nights, with a Soho Songbook and 100 years of Ella Fitzgerald. Steve Knightley of Festival patrons Show of Hands, who have packed out the Royal Albert Hall, considers St Ives a “mustplay event”, adding: “We can’t wait to be back.” Ireland’s Cara Dillon, who appeared in 2012, recalled: “A fantastic show. an improvised cabaret sketching session in a painting club until 2am!” That sums up a festival where the unexpected can be round the next corner, in the next gallery or pub – much of it free. Norway Square has become a festival tradition, with poet Bob Devereux hosting lunchtime sessions since 1981. One Square regular, poet and singer Ray Turner, was so smitten that he and his wife moved to Cornwall. Ray explained: “In 1995 we discovered the St Ives September Festival because we wanted to see (singersongwriter) John Otway and we’ve been coming ever since. Finally we moved from London to Penzance in 2009 because we wanted to be closer to the festival.” It has that sort of enduring effect on people!

ornwall is steeped in history and here at Cornwall Living, we love nothing more than discovering how our unique heritage has shaped, not just our landscape, but our county’s culture too. In a modern world, we’re able to enjoy the historical landscapes of our county without the need to trawl through the history books – we have smartphones with all the information we could possibly ask for, as well as maps which can take us to significant sites with pinpoint accuracy. English Heritage knows how important it is to engage people of all ages with history, through the implementation of hands-on experiences that are inspired by the national organisation’s knowledge, imagination and enduring values of authenticity. In Cornwall this is particularly pertinent, with historic sites such as Pendennis, St Mawes, and Tintagel offering us ample opportunity to learn all about the region’s history, heritage and lore from the Iron Age, right the way throguh to the Second World War. Over the summer months, there is a plethora of events taking place, courtesy of English Heritage, that are ideal for not only engaging, but exciting everyone in your family about the history that’s on their doorstep, just waiting to be discovered.

Get a feel for the mining industry at this fascinating heritage site

A TOUR THROUGH TOLGUS Head to Cornwall Gold and walk in the footsteps of Cornwall’s tin miners, at Tolgus Mill.
I DISCOVER MORE After your guided tour, pop into the Cornwall Gold showroom for a healthy dose of retail therapy, before heading to the Cornish Pantry Restaurant, where you can enjoy a Cornish breakfast on an authentic tinner’s shovel!
f you’ve been watching Poldark recently, you’ll be wondering what life may have been like for Cornish miners at the height of the industry. At Cornwall Gold’s Tolgus Tin Mill, you could be getting the very insight you’ve been looking for, walking in the footsteps of the men – and children – who once worked there. Now part of the Cornwall Gold site between Redruth and Portreath, Tolgus Mill has been in action since 1865 and is at the heart of a renovation project, aimed at preserving the site’s historic heritage. Cornwall Gold’s Steve Ackland explains: “This was the over ground operation of the mining industry, where local mining waste and tin ore from sand and river deposits were filtered for every last bit of tin. Workers would spend up to 15 hours a day, hand-sifting other people’s rubbish.” Today, while much of the 18-acre site is taken up by Cornwall Gold’s beautiful jewellery showrooms, the mill remains the
last original tin streaming works in Europe. Indeed, tin is still smelted here and is mixed with silver and gold to produce the stunning Tolgus Tin collection. Impressively, proceeds from this range are reinvested back into the mill, ensuring that restoration continues and Tolgus’ future is safeguarded. Tours of the mill, which run daily between 10am and 4pm at just £4 per person, allow you to see a set of original Cornish stamps – more than 150 years old – and learn about life as a miner, including the back-breaking conditions from which they were required to extract the most meagre amounts of tin. Tolgus was, undoubtedly, safer than Cornwall’s underground mines, yet to wander through the mill is to be reminded of just how hard and, indeed, dangerous the work could be. Noisy. Dusty. Dirty. Wet. Even children were expected to follow in their fathers’ and grandfathers’ footsteps, being placed on duty in the slime pits or under frames. “It’s a form of labour that would be unthinkable today,” says Steve. “Kids that visit us are amazed by the harsh conditions, and all of a sudden, going to school seems that much more appealing!”

Publishing supremo Rachel Hickman discusses working with Roald Dahl, and how her love of the Roseland led to penning her debut novel.
I
WORDS BY
Felix Rowe
ntroducing author Rachel Hickman, whose recently published debut novel for the YA market, One Silver Summer, explores loss and first love in an atmospheric Cornwall. We’ve met to learn more about her lifelong love of books, a fascinating career in the publishing industry, and her family’s deep connection with Cornwall. For as long as she can remember, Rachel has been enchanted by the magic and escapism of a good book. As a young girl, she joined the iconic Puffin Club, and she would often be found curled up with a wellthumbed copy of the latest summer pageturner. Growing up in Hong Kong afforded a unique childhood, and – much like the books she read – this exposure to a foreign land nurtured an enduring desire to travel and discover new worlds. Following a degree in publishing, Rachel went on to enjoy a fruitful career in children’s books, working for all the household name publishers, including the very one that started it all: Puffin Books. “It was literally a dream come true,” says Rachel, “working with some of the world’s most beloved authors, and heroes of mine, from Dick King Smith to Roald Dahl. I remember, very early on in
Tim Neale / Idenna Creative Agency
Linings my career, going for an interview at Penguin Books’ head office and finding myself in the lift with the legendary poet, Roger McGough – a very surreal moment!” Back when Rachel was a young publicist, Roald Dahl was the biggest author on the planet. “He had a big physical presence too,” Rachel remembers, “he was very tall, like the BFG – and no doubt Quentin Blake took some inspiration from this in his illustrations. He was terrifying to my bosses, but charming to a young publicist. He could appear very stern and intimidating one minute, then say something slightly outrageous and have his readers in fits of giggles!” A particularly memorable experience was working with the illustrator and newspaper cartoonist Posy Simmonds at an Arvon

Foundation creative break for writers, in a beautiful setting in Devon. “It was a blissful week with authors and artists, enjoying creative writing sessions. Posy was funny and elegant, and kind – although I remember spending most of the week coaxing everyone out of the pub to actually do some work!” In 2000, Rachel set up independent publisher, Chicken House, alongside Barry Cunningham – famed for ‘discovering’ JK Rowling. The hugely successful publishing house has gone on to sell millions of books around the world.
The Cornish connection Rachel has a deep affinity with the Roseland, and I’m keen to discover how it came about. “A series of coincidences really,” explains Rachel. “My parents used to take me down to Cornwall as a child – a huge contrast to the concrete jungle of Hong Kong.” Years later, Rachel and her husband, Simon, took their honeymoon in Cornwall, travelling around in a classic Triumph sports car. “We stayed at Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes – before the Polizzis took over – and it felt like walking into a Du Maurier novel. In fact, I read most of her books again during our stay!”
102 | CORNWALL LIVING
z.CL--62--EHM--Rachel Hickman--3.00.indd 102
Their love affair with the Roseland continued; when their children were little they regularly visited Portloe, staying at the same fisherman’s cottage looking out over the cove. “It felt like being in an Enid Blyton novel. The children used to go tombstoning in Portloe, though it’s not allowed anymore. My husband loves to go fishing and star-watching at night. We’ve been returning for about 18 years now.” But, as Rachel recently discovered, the connection goes back even further. “As I was flicking through some old pictures of my mum, I found one of her as a child on a beach. On the back was a handwritten note: ‘Porthscatho, 1939’. I also have a picture of me at a similar age from the ‘70s on that very beach, and it’s amazing to realise all these years we’ve been visiting the very same spot!” One of Rachel’s favourite beaches is Towan, between Porthscatho and St Antony Head, where she’s seen horses being ridden close to the coast path, but the beach they spend most of their time on is Carne, as Rachel explains: “It always feels empty, even in the height of summer. From here you can walk to Pendower and then onto Melinsey Mill, a 16th century water mill and now a tearoom and craft workshop, which does the best afternoon tea.”

One Silver Summer After years of publishing and talking about books, the time came for Rachel to practise what she preached and put pen to paper herself. She used her visits to the Roseland to write what would become One Silver Summer, taking long walks on the beach and coast path, before returning to the cottage, or one winter to the fireside at The Lugger Hotel in Portloe, as well as The Nare Hotel in St Mawes. Rachel explains her inspiration. “I wanted to write a classic summertime fairy tale and romance for young teens. A touch of Daphne. With first novels, there’s often so much of a writer in their book, and I think that’s true. I also love horses – my other great passion – and the book is full of horses and dogs. What’s more, the heroine in the book, Sass, is American. As I grew up abroad, I consciously avoided making her from Britain, reflecting my own mixed up upbringing. The idea of taking a character from one world and plonking them in another that’s completely alien to them creates an another interesting dimension of otherness to explore.” Without giving too much away, Sass meets a dashing young stable hand who, it transpires, is destined for greatness – a twist inspired by the real-life story of a childhood friend, who went on to be a Danish Princess! But the greatest influence is Cornwall itself, a significant presence throughout. “Cornwall
is like another character in the book, it’s unlike anywhere else. I love its moods; that the weather can be totally different in Porthscatho and Portloe when only a few miles apart. Silver is a colour I really associate with Cornwall, hence the book’s title.” Indeed, you get a sense of Du Maurier’s influence in the way the landscape entwines itself within the pages. “I’ve been lucky to travel all around the world to some extraordinary places, but Cornwall remains my favourite place anywhere.” Aside from its incomparable scenery, Cornwall’s other great draw is its food. “Curgurrell Farm does fantastic bread, and dressed crab and lobster,” says Rachel. “Run by the Taffinder family, their son Ben is building a name as an artist.” While notably delighted to add ‘published author’ to her already impressive list of accolades, Rachel is deep into her second book, “a darker novel this time, with a supernatural thread running through it,” again based in the West Country. Keep a look out for this emerging new talent, as I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from Rachel Hickman in future.

ith launch sites across Cornwall, Virgin Balloon Flights are the UK’s only national tour operator of hot air balloon rides, having taken passengers on once-in-a-lifetime adventures for more than 22 years. As you might expect, a balloon ride is a fantastic way to celebrate a special occasion, and it makes an even better gift. Indeed, as the old adage goes, give experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show. Impressively, you can choose from over 100 launch sites, so whether you happen to be in the Lake District or are holidaying in Perth; even if you’d just like to see your home county from above, you won’t find a better way in which to do so, and here are just a few reasons why.
New perspectives
Just amazing. It was so quiet and peaceful as we went up to 2,000 feet and it was a lot smoother than I imagined
Seeing Cornwall in this unique way is an experience you’ll never forget. Hop into the basket at your nearest launch site – either in Liskeard or the ancient capital of Cornwall, Launceston – and soar above one of England’s most beautiful regions. Take in the lay of the land and look down upon a three-dimensional view of Cornwall that only a balloon ride can offer.
Romance Many flyers have described their balloon ride as “like a romantic magic carpet ride”, which isn’t far from the truth. Perfect for couples, whether you’re celebrating an anniversary or dropping to one knee; even if you just want to spend some quality time away from the noise of life on land, this is a great way to tick your bucket list together.
Family matters Most of us have a relative (or relatives) who we tell ourselves we must spend more time with. Chances are, they’d relish the chance to take to the skies as a family, and with group balloon rides becoming more and more popular as friends and family club together, now’s the time to organise your family trip of a lifetime. A wonderful chance to top up the photo albums, this is about the best selfie-op you’ll ever have!
What flyers say We speak with Holly, who flew from Launceston one beautiful August evening. Blown away by the flight, she describes her experience: “Just amazing. It was so quiet and peaceful as we went up to 2,000 feet and it was a lot smoother than I imagined. You could see for miles, and after the flight landed, there was lots of laughter as the basket tipped! “It was nice to help pack up the massive balloon and enjoy a glass of Champagne in the field where we landed. Massive thanks to pilot Mandy and her helper for an absolutely fantastic day!” So, when will you take life higher and tick a balloon ride off of your bucket list? If you’d like to enjoy an experience like Holly’s, whether it be with your partner or with relatives who you owe a long-overdue catch up, contact Virgin Balloons and see how the team can help get your plans off the ground.

s ever, a trip to Scilly brings with it a sense of anticipation and excitement. Less than 30 miles from the mainland, but a world away when it comes to turquoise seas, white sand beaches and the ultimate relaxation destination. It’s hard to describe to anyone who hasn’t visited Scilly before but, from the moment you step off the boat or the plane, all your cares seem to melt away. We can’t go many months without a rejuvenating trip to the islands and this spring we stayed on St Mary’s, the biggest of the five inhabited islands. The flight is short but very sweet, we were airborne for just 15 minutes before touching down at St Mary’s airport. If you haven’t experienced St Mary’s airport before, then you must, it is how airports should be – a landing strip that almost ends in the ocean and a terminal building that is never busy and is the gateway to paradise! We stayed at St Mary’s Hall Hotel and were shown to our lovely garden room, which had patio doors opening out onto the courtyard – ideal for us as we were accompanied by our dog, Leven, who could wander in and out of the room as he pleased. The hotel is based around an elegant town house and my wife declared it to have found the perfect combination: “Big enough that you can lose yourself but small enough that you could still feel a part of it.” We ate at St Mary’s Hall on both nights of the stay and the food was

delicious. The Scillonian crab cakes were a highlight, as was the warm beetroot salad and the lobster the freshest I’ve ever tasted, not surprising as we were just steps from whence it came. But this time our trip wasn’t about the food, we were here to meet some of Scilly’s amazing artists and craftspeople who have taken inspiration from their surroundings to produce some exquisite pieces. After a great night’s sleep we strolled down to the quayside to board our off-island boat for the journey to St Agnes. On arrival we were greeted by Emily Sladen, and took the short stroll with her to the Island Hall Artist Studio. As we walked Emily explained that she studied textiles at Leeds University before settling on St Agnes. Her innovative designs are made using recycled yarns and fabrics and need to be seen to be believed. Taking inspiration from the beauty and power of the ocean her intricate designs and landscapes are a cross between a painting and a piece of embroidery. Fellow studio artists Trish Peacock and Lou Simmonds gave us a warm welcome as we were shown around the newly built Island Hall that they share with Emily. The hall is an epic, thought provoking structure that really makes you consider things in context in terms of the islands – imagine the work involved in getting the materials to the islands to build this Weslyan chapel extension! St Agnes is known to be one of the wilder, more rugged islands and

you can certainly see the influence of the changing nature of its sea and sky in their work. Lou is a basket maker, learning her trade from Barnstaple basket maker, Jack West, where they worked on commissions for David Mellor and Jasper Conran. Although she misses the ‘big brand’ work, Lou has clearly found a wonderful alternative to the London life. Using local materials such as St Agnes tamarisk alongside willow and cotton rag paper, her baskets are both practical and works of art in their own right. Weaver Trish completes the trio and her scarves, drapes and hangings are created as amazing one-off pieces. Silk, wool, cashmere and alpaca all feature in her repertoire, woven on a range of handlooms and she explained that: “It’s like painting with yarn. The colours I use reflect the seasons, that’s the thing about being here on the islands; it influences.” That’s also very apparent at the Porthloo Studios and workshops back on St Mary’s, as the following day we meandered from our hotel to meet the artists in residence Susan Seddon, Carly Player and Peter M Smith. Susan at ‘Scilly Socks’ is both a
n Susan Seddon
craftsperson and painter, whose canvases are searching and reflective in contrast to her socks that are vibrant and fun. Susan brought up her four children in London but realised that she needed to nurture her creative side and so in 2007, moved to Scilly. “When I arrived I joked that the only way I was leaving was in a box!” Such is the passion of all of the island artists we met. Working in the same studio, Carly, of Scilly Gems, was born on St Mary’s and specialises in making beautifully fragranced soap and handmade beadwork jewellery. She was taught the art of soap making by Peter Hobson who had a perfumery next door to her studio. Sadly Peter died, but Carly has carried on the art, ethically and locally sourcing the ingredients for her range of soaps and smellies. All her jewellery is made in her studio and the range of gifts and creations is really light and refreshing, making Scilly Gems well worth a very fragrant visit. Adj Brown

The last, and by no means least, of the Porthloo residents is acclaimed artist Peter M Smith. His works are exhibited on Scilly as well as on the mainland including The New Craftsman in St Ives and the Riverside Gallery, London. Peter started off as a sculptor but soon realised he was more of a painter. A member of the Newlyn Society of Artists, Peter moved to the islands in 1965. After studying Fine Art at Falmouth College as a mature student he returned to Scilly in 1987. His work is both figurative and abstract and draws from the landscape, flowers and colours of Scilly. It’s amazing to have so much talent in such a relatively small geographical area and in our short time exploring the creative side of Scilly it’s clear to see that there is a thriving community of artists here. Our next stop was Glandore Gallery, home to award-winning artist Stephen Morris. His work is influenced by the Impressionists, and he works ‘en plein air’ believing this to be the best way of capturing the Scillonian landscape. He is a common sight around Scilly, in front of his easel, sporting his iconic ‘Tilley’ hat. From here we ventured to Phoenix Craft Studio, where owner Oriel

orris
Hicks, who also runs the Tamarisk Gallery, greeted us warmly. She is a fused glass artist and her work is simply stunning. Inspired by the clarity of light on Scilly she creates a variety of pieces from small light catchers that you can hang in your window to large stained glass commissions. Alongside six other craftspeople you will find a print maker, a silk painter and a jeweller, many of whom offer workshops where you can make your very own ‘Scilly’ souvenir to take home. As our day drew to an end we had time to catch up with Steve Sherris at his working studio and Silver Street Gallery. As a landscape artist there could be nowhere better for him to live and paint, the clarity of his work is such that it’s almost photographic in its nature. Preferring to working outside, Steve works on small canvas boards before returning to his studio to work up larger versions. He told us that the light on Scilly amplifies the vivid colours that you can clearly see reflected in his works, that are textured with sand, shells and granite to add texture and interest.
GET INVOLVED All of the artists and craftspeople we visited on Scilly welcome visitors so next time you visit be sure to pop in, or in fact take a special ‘creative’ trip to the islands. We are lucky to have a plethora of artistic talent both on Scilly and back here on the mainland. Over the coming pages we take a look at just a few of the galleries and artists that are cementing Cornwall’s position on the creative stage. We hope you enjoy reading about them as much as we’ve enjoyed talking to them.

Take a photo-editing workshop with Carla Regler and get more out of life through a lens.
t may sound like a cliché, but the best camera in the world is the one you have with you, whether it’s the phone in your pocket or an SLR with all the lenses and tripods that your luggage can carry; but whatever camera you use, it’s important to get the most out of your images by using the correct management and editing software. Cornish photographer, Carla Regler, who’s admired throughout the county for her exceptional ability to capture the region’s landscapes, understands the importance of editing and organising your photography. With this in mind, as well as offering expert tuition on how to get the most out of your hardware, Carla is now offering you the chance to take beginner, intermediate and advanced classes for using Lightroom – arguably the industry’s leading editing and management software, so you can really hone your craft. Just think of the possibilities: anybody can take a picture – most of us have smartphones nowadays – but so few actually take the time to polish the fruits of our labour. With the right skills, your images could really stand out from the everyday feed of seascapes and sunsets, and it won’t be long before your friends stop believing that you actually took
them! To inspire her classes, Carla takes her workshops in Porthleven, one of Cornwall’s most photogenic fishing villages, offering plenty of coffee, cakes, a memory stick with a manual ready for the course, as well as a light lunch (for those not full on cake!). Carla really is an authority when it comes to capturing Cornwall on camera. In fact, she’s travelled the world, pursuing her passion for snapshotting some of the globe’s most fascinating regions, from hazy stretches of savannah to the snow-bound reaches of Iceland and anywhere in between. So, whatever it is that you’d like to learn more about; whether you’re struggling to find the perfect light and angle, or in need of pointers when it comes to editing and filing your images in a way that even a professional would be proud of, one of her workshops is definitely for you.

oming up to their five year anniversary since taking over Customs House Gallery, on the harbourside in Porthleven, Louise and John Winterton are excited at the prospect of many more years to come of displaying the work of both new and upcoming local artists. Indeed, the gallery continues to evolve, and the constant flow of new works from well-established gallery artists, as well as those from new additions to the gallery such as Joe Armstrong are proving ever popular. The fresh and innovative paintings on display at Customs House help to make this gallery quirky yet sophisticated, with many pieces of Porthleven’s stunning surrounding scenery being incorporated into its exhibitions. But it’s not just paintings on display. John and Louise have an eye for all kinds of work, including sculptures, jewellery and a beautiful range of ceramic work by five different artists. The gallery is also a member of the Own Art scheme, a popular way to afford original work, usually from local artists. Attend the ‘Meet the Artist’ sessions to gain revealing insights into the artists’ inspiration. Coming up over next few months are some really exciting sessions, which John and Louise tell us include David Gray on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th July; Simon Jewell on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th August, and Jackie Hollingsbee, on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th September. So, if you’d like to discover more about some of west Cornwall’s finest artists, be sure to pop in and see the artists at work. Finally, John and Louise know that enjoying your favourite piece of art isn’t as simple as buying it and popping it on the wall, which is why they offer a bespoke framing service. Keeping the couple busy with both locals and visitors, it’s just another reason why this beautifully understated gallery is beginning to attract more local artists to the scene. Next time you’re in Porthleven, why not pop in and explore what Customs House has to offer?

T
he landscape expressionist painter Steve Slimm has been through some major life-changes these past 12 months, to say the least. Following the death of his long-term partner in August 2016, he has been blessed with a new relationship this year, which apparently threatens to take him away from Cornwall. His planned move to Devon will not, however, mean the end of his Cornish connection, with his studio near Praa Sands remaining active, and many galleries showcasing his acclaimed landscapes. Over the past three decades the name ‘Steve Slimm’ has become synonymous with a deep connection to the natural environment. His paintings, although not instantly obvious, breathe the essence of archaic Cornwall – of the moors, the coast, of the ancient tracts of land before we arrived in force to both populate and, for better or worse, leave our footprint. “One thing is for sure”, Steve muses, “we have changed things; it’s what we do. And yet the essence of the land remains the same – unchanged, and unchangeable. A bit like ourselves really.” It is of our human connection to our unchangeable planet, that
Steve’s work speaks. Through his artwork, Steve uses paint to tell of an ideal world of harmony. The horizon is rarely distinct, but rather a misty, even mystical, merging of land and sky. His work leads viewers toward feeling safe, with feet firmly on the ground, whilst at the same time soaring toward the light. In this way, his work has proved inspirational to many an aspiring artist through the years. If you are looking for detailed topographical interest, though, in Steve’s own words: “I’m afraid you can forget it! I have no wish to tell you what a place looks like, I want to tell you how I feel about what I see – what I experience. By doing this, I somehow know I am reminding you, the viewer, of how you feel about it, about the unchangeable in all of us; and how our connection to the land is somehow part of this. That’s all I wish to say; and if this invokes connectedness – then I’m happy.”

ou’ll find the Poly Guild tucked away in the historic building of The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society on Church Street, in the centre of Falmouth. The Guild has now been going nearly two years, and in this relatively short time has firmly established itself as a key cultural hub of the town, having displayed, sold and promoted over 60 artists, many of whom are new graduates who have not exhibited before. The work of well-established artists, such as Tom Raffield, John Howard and Tim Lake, can also be found in the Guild. All pieces are selected by a panel of experts in their field of arts and crafts, and must come from those who studied at Falmouth or who live and work in the Falmouth area. Jane Smith, local designer-maker and Guild Manager, draws on her knowledge and experience of arts and crafts in Falmouth to ensure the shop reflects the diverse range of talent the area has produced. Recently, the Poly Guild has liaised with Felix Packer and Esther Connon to produce a limited edition mug with the intention of producing more twice a year, and giving all artists the chance to feature on an affordable, cherished piece of art. These mugs are a limited edition of 500, with the next artist to feature being illustrator Faye Bradley and her whale illustration.
Guild Manager Jane Smith tells us what to expect. “We hope to create a collectable range,” explains Jane. “The imagery on the mugs will not be purely illustration but in fact could be a design drawing from a ceramicist, textile designer or glass artist.” New artists to the Guild include Sandra Austin jewellery, Joshua Kerley glass, Lou Tonkin illustration and Liz Mehen ceramics. “Creating jewellery is my passion,” adds Sandra Austin. “Every twist, every turn, is a piece that is unique and special.” Lou is an artist and printmaker from Cornwall, fascinated by nature and the hedgerows. Joshua Kerley makes a range of fused and slumped glassware for contemporary homes and interiors. Liz Mehen’s work is nautical themed and fired with rich alkaline crackle glazes in vibrant turquoise and verdant green. In music, the term ‘polyphonic’ refers to an instrument or ensemble “producing or involving many sounds or voices”, and that perfectly sums up the ethos of the Poly Guild – a centre that promotes a diverse and varied assortment of arts, yet all somehow linked to their home in Falmouth.

COLOURS OF
A
lways on the lookout for Cornwall’s best buys, we catch up Liz Hackney to learn more about the popular Charlestown gallery. She tells us: “We love colour at Atishoo Gallery, and it influences our choices when it comes to choosing our stockists.” This is quite clear on entering the gallery, and some of the first paintings that stand out are the works of co-owner Paul Clark, whose paintings are bright, quirky and large in scale, depicting happy coastal scenes with fishing boats and fluffy clouds in blue skies. Liz continues: “Everything else we sell needs to sit well with these. We’re often told that walking into our gallery always feels sunny, because there is such a kaleidoscope of colour that it really hits your senses. We want to brighten your day, even when the weather throws some Cornish mizzle at us, helped by our colourful floral displays outside.” Atishoo concentrates on only selling art, craft and homewares by British based artists, designers and manufacturers. The amazing local artist Alan Arthurs now has his own exhibition room in the gallery, with over 200 original paintings to choose from, starting from tiny little originals for £20, up to large detailed paintings of the Cornish industrial landscape at several hundred pounds. “Visitors come back year after year to add another Alan Arthurs piece to their collection,” Liz explains. New this year is Atishoo’s tiny shed outside the main shop door. “It’s actually a gardener’s tool shed but painted in a lovely coastal blue. We like to think of it as our very own miniature beach hut. On sunny days, we put some of our lovely new cushions, tea cosies and coastal signs in there, and it looks lovely as you walk up the driveway. The coastal signs come from a West Country company and are designed by Martin Wiscombe, who adapts the artwork to incorporate local landmarks and place names. It’s great having a range of bespoke Charlestown products at such a reasonable price.” Also new this season is some fabulous work from Karina Goodman, such as ‘Coastal Flowers’, an oil-on-canvas piece with soft hues of coastal colour, really complementing Atishoo’s other ranges. So, if you’re looking to buy that special something for that special someone, why not pay a visit to Atishoo Gallery. It’s the perfect destination after a morning spent exploring Charlestown’s historic harbour.
We discover Atishoo Gallery, a wonderful independent gallery next to the historic harbour in Charlestown.

OPENING TIMES The gallery is typically open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, but will be closed from 22nd to 29th August, when Liz and Paul take their welldeserved summer break!

HAVE A GO! Do you fancy having a go at a workshop? There are sevenweek courses, one-off courses and ‘improvers club’ running throughout the year. For the experienced, you can ‘rent a bench’ with all the equipment you need. Call Paul and Clair for all the details.
J
ewellers are the perfect places to visit if you are celebrating key milestones and anniversaries, so it’s only right that we commemorate a very special occasion: the fifth birthday of Porthleven Jewellery Workshop on Porthleven’s picturesque harbourside, led by husband and wife team, Paul and Clair Pennington. Over the last half-decade, Paul and Clair have established their wonderful independent jewellers as the go-to destination for friendly and reliable advice and service, to complement the beautiful range of all things sparkly. Like any business, they’ve had challenges along the way, but what has remained constant is the warm welcome you always receive upon entering, the expertise and quality that speaks for itself. Step inside and you’ll find stunning jewellery, watches and accessories for both her and him; eminent international brands sit side by side with unique bespoke items created by the talented in-house team. The brand new displays feature even more designs and fine wristwatches by Zeppelin and Junkers. These premium German-made watches are of excellent quality and value for money, with self-winding automatic or battery driven quartz movements available. There’s also a great selection of quality pearl necklaces and earrings in different styles, both traditional and modern, as well as bracelets and find bridal jewellery to fit outfits.
Alongside replacement battery fitting, the Jewellery Workshop carries out in-house repairs on all types of jewellery. In addition to the existing contemporary designs made in-house and by local artists, you can commission your very own unique pieces in any precious metal – perfect if you would like bespoke wedding rings and engagement rings made just for you. In fact, what could be more romantic than making your own rings? Just across the harbour on the Breageside, you’ll find the original workshop where the business first began – it’s still used today for wonderful jewellery making classes and courses. We say this with confidence, having tried it ourselves – honestly, we can’t remember having so much fun, even those in the office who least expected it! The little workshop is currently being redesigned into a creative art space, by art students from Cornwall College. So whatever the occasion, from a new arrival to a ruby wedding anniversary, make sure you add a bit of sparkle at Porthleven Jewellery Workshop.

| HEALTH
THE CHOICE IS We take a look at the benefits of private treatment at Duchy Hospital.
W
hen Duchy Hospital opened it was entirely private. All patients paid for their treatment, either with medical insurance or their own funds. But more recently, it has begun to take NHS patients too. Why, then, is it worth paying for your treatment to go to the same hospital? In essence, paying for your treatment means that you are treated at your convenience rather than to fit in with the NHS. Private patients can choose when they have their treatment, which can make a real difference. For some this simply means being seen as quickly as possible – in some cases being seen by a consultant on the same day as being contacted. One patient, Mr Peter Fittock, explains the peace of mind that this gave him: “It was an urgent consultation at my instigation and I was dealt with in a understanding and very prompt manner which gave me much comfort at a difficult time.” For others it’s simply about being able to choose a time which fits into their lifestyle. Perhaps you want to be treated
yours
in good time to be able to recover from your operation for a special event like a wedding or a holiday. Others find that due to work commitments, the uncertainty of when they will get their appointment or operation causes problems, especially for those who run their own business. Private patients can also choose the consultant they wish to see. NHS patients are not always given a choice of consultant, or they may be treated by a member of a consultant’s team rather than the named consultant. Private healthcare enables choice, convenience and an experience designed around you and your needs. And it’s more affordable that you may think. Duchy Hospital offers fixed cost care for many treatments giving a total price for treatment without any unexpected extras. Interest free finance is also available to spread the cost.

“It just feels like a normal tooth. I can easily justify the cost to myself because I’m going to have this tooth for 20 or so years” LINDA
LIFE CHANGING DENTISTRY Stop worrying about your teeth and get on with your life
These days nobody needs to be troubled by their teeth. If you don’t feel confident smiling, if you have trouble chewing your food, or if you’d simply like to look “better”, then advanced dentistry treatments such as dental implants can change your life. Dental implants offer a permanent solution to missing or failing teeth. They can boost self-confidence and help people to smile again.
DENTURE STABILISATION
The highly trained team at Pure Dental Health in Truro has over 35 years combined dental implant experience and have placed over 6,500 dental implants to date. They are also capable of complex bone and gum grafting procedures that other clinics do not offer. Having attended hundreds of courses both in the UK and abroad, patients can receive the latest advancements in Implantology. You can be safe in the knowledge that your treatment is delivered by highly qualified professionals in a relaxing caring environment.
SINGLE OR MULTIPLE MISSING TEETH
FIXED TEETH IN A DAY A revolutionary approach which has radically changed the replacement of lost teeth. In suitable patients we can replace a conventional removable denture, remove failing teeth if required, place new implants and fix a full restoration all in one day. Avoiding the need to live with a temporary denture in between having your existing teeth extracted and the new dental implants placed. You will only require one surgical process instead of multiple ones. The shortened time means that the whole process is more cost effective than alternative methods.
Loose dentures can cause frustration and embarrassment in social situations and make it impossible to eat certain types of food, with detrimental effects to digestion and overall health. Usually with loose dentures people resort to using lots of denture adhesive, which can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth as well as being cumbersome to clean. Dental implants can help to stabilise your dentures allowing you to eat what you like.
When you have lost a tooth, the equilibrium in your mouth is upset. If it’s a large tooth at the back of your mouth, you will start having to eat on the other side, which puts more pressure on those teeth. Over time this could cause them to break and be lost. If it’s a front tooth, this could have a massive effect on your self-confidence. Dental implants provide comfort, stability and are the closest thing to natural teeth. HOW COULD PURE DENTAL HEALTH HELP YOU? We offer free treatment adviser appointments where a highly qualified member of our team will make recommendations after listening to your personal situation. We also have regular offers on assessments. Why not contact us today on 01872 222404 to see how we can help take away your worry.

| ADVICE
Retirement freedom This month Matt Begley, retirement planning expert at Harris Begley, helps dispel the myths surrounding Equity Release.
D
id you know that you can’t see the Great Wall of China from space, Napoleon wasn’t short and Vikings never had horns attached to their helmets? These are just a few of the many myths that have evolved over time. Similarly, if you choose an Equity Release plan there isn’t the possibility that this may result in you losing your home (if it remains your main residence), nor will it leave any debt to your children. This is the case if you opt for a lender that’s a member of industry body, the Equity Release Council, which covers the vast majority of all new loans, as the Council has a number of rules in place to reassure borrowers that they’re protected.
What is Equity Release? If you’re not too familiar with this product, it’s simply another form of borrowing for homeowners aged 55+ that enables them to stay in their home. It’s also increasingly viewed as another element of the retirement planning process. With Equity Release, some of the value in your home is released in order to raise funds. You can then use that money for whatever reason you like, such as helping to clear an outstanding mortgage, enabling home improvements, gifting money to family and friends or perhaps, simply using it to treat yourself. In short, with the average 65 year-old UK adult having around 20 years of retirement ahead of them, the extra funds will hopefully assist the journey through this period.
How it works With the most popular product, a Lifetime Mortgage, you can raise funds (up to agreed limits), and not even have to pay off any capital or interest at any point during your lifetime. The provider of the loan would reclaim the capital (and any accumulated interest) through the sale of the property, once the plan-holder dies or moves into long-term care. Of course, it may not be the best route for everyone, and other options do exist (such as downsizing), but Equity Release has become increasingly popular, with the Equity Release Council reporting record-breaking figures loaned in 2016 and the first quarter of 2017. However, this shouldn’t be a surprise, as the old-world view that retirement income will be largely based on pensions possibly doesn’t hold true anymore.
IN THE KNOW These are Lifetime Mortgages and Home Reversion Plans. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. As Equity Release is a complex area, only specially qualified advisors can give advice on these schemes.

id you know that Cornish charity Cornwall Hospice Care relies on the support of a thousand volunteers? They give their time in a wide range of roles at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices, in the shops, offices and at fundraising events. This year the charity is celebrating the commitment of its volunteers by featuring a series of short films made with just some of those who donate their time and skills. Also involved are the staff members who support them, all of whom reinforce the fact that the charity simply couldn’t achieve all it does without voluntary help. Elaine volunteers in Cornwall Hospice Care’s lottery department at Holmbush in St Austell. “I wanted to give something back, making a small contribution to the wonderful work that the hospices do.” Her manager, Sarah Vincent, says: “Elaine does marvellous work for us in the lottery team. We couldn’t do what we do without her.” Jane volunteers on the ward at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell. “I have a nursing background so felt I would be able to come in to the hospice and offer help and support to the staff, patients and relatives. Volunteering makes me feel elated and I would urge anyone to try it.” Lizzie Hotton is the Ward Sister. “Our ward volunteers
undertake a variety of roles and bring a cheerful smile. We really value everything they do and would be lost without them.” Richard volunteers as a van driver’s assistant, taking donated goods to Cornwall Hospice Care’s shops across Cornwall, “By volunteering there’s no cost to the charity and the work keeps me busy and reasonably fit.” His support is valued by driver Warren, “my day would be much harder if I didn’t have a volunteer helping me to lift and carry, Richard’s good company too.” Bunty volunteers in the charity’s shop in Hayle. “It’s rewarding to know the good we’re doing because every pound we make supports the care we offer families. It’s an honour to be here and I would urge people to come and find out more.”
