to the October issue of Cornwall Living
t this time of year many of us are starting to think about replenishing our wood stores and curling up by the fire, and who could blame us? As the evenings once again begin drawing in and we begin spending more time indoors, it can be a good idea to start thinking about those interior improvements we’ve been putting off during the balmy heights of summer. With this in mind, this issue sees the return of our supplement dedicated to October’s Cornwall ome Improvement and Self Build Show, from page 55. We also have a tempting selection of autumnal coastal breaks 103 , the latest Cornish foodie news 108 , a selection of work from some of our favourite artists and galleries 124 , plus an unbelievable selection of prizes up for grabs in this month’s competitions 106 . So, whether you’re planning to curl up with a book as the temperatures cool, or are determined to continue getting out and about regardless of the weather, this issue has everything you need to continue making the most of the ultimate lifestyle by the sea.

Is this Cornwall’s most unique attraction?
Google ‘disaster relief visitor centre,’ and you’ll be surprised to learn the only one like it in Europe, is located in the heart of Cornwall. The centre is tucked away on Charles Street in Truro – it’s interactive, thought provoking, family friendly, educational, inspiring, and it gets five star TripAdvisor reviews. So what is this place? ShelterBox Visitor Centre tells the story of the Cornish charity, from its origins in Helston to its position today as a leading international humanitarian organisation. ShelterBox has responded to earthquakes, flooding, drought, storms and conflict all over the world, helping over 1.5 million people. The visitor centre shows how the
charity responds to disasters, from what sort of aid to supply, to making sure the right aid gets to the right people, and how providing emergency shelter helps people start to rebuild their lives. It’s one of Cornwall’s hidden gems, and to top it all off, admission is free! For more information call 01872 302600 or visit www.visitshelterbox.org
Welcome to
Melinsey Mill Tucked away in one of Cornwall’s hidden valleys near Truro, you will discover Melinsey Mill. This local family business is run from a restored 16th century water mill. Melinsey is a one off, a wonderfully Cornish mixture of eccentricity and charm.
Moving on to new pastures After four years trading at Par Market and more recently at the Par Market Food Hall, owner of The Wine House Cornwall, John McCormick is moving on to a new challenge and will be working for Ellis Wharton Wines, an independent Cornish wine and spirits company based in Par.
According to county records there has been a mill on the site since 1210 and the mill as it stands today has been on the site since 1565. When you walk around the pond you pass a mermaid, walk under a lampshade tree and travel through a teapot arch. After your journey you might be ready for a homemade light lunch, cake or cream tea.
With over 200 Cornish gins, spirits and wines and plenty more from around the world, there is going to be a great selection to choose from and John will ensure that all the most popular gins from his time in the Wine House make the move with him.
four years and I hope that many of you will come and find me in my new home.”
If the weather should be unkind, seek refuge inside the mill or in the rustic shelters and large firehouse.
John tells us: “I would like to thank my customers for all their support over the last

A Falmouth guide for parents of students It’s that time of year again when classes are returning for their new year and new students are eagerly awaiting their first year of studies. With all the attention being focused on the children, we thought a bit of advice for the parents was in order with some dos and don’ts when visiting your offspring. Don’t even think about staying at their place – you may have fond memories of student life or think that you’ve brought your child up to be clean and wholesome, but beware!
beautiful university town to make the most of, with beaches and coastal walks nearby as well as a great watersports centre next to the maritime museum. If you want to find a place to stay that combines all of these elements in one beautifully luxurious package then make sure to book a room at The Oceanic Suite Hotel, perfect for a great send off for your child’s next year at uni. For more information call 01326 389330 or visit www.oceanichotelfalmouth.co.uk
Do book somewhere with enough space for your child to visit. Tempting as it may be to spend your days and evenings with them in a pub or restaurant, it’s also nice to have a cosy space to retreat to for some quality family time. This makes staying in self-catered accommodation a good option, so you can fit in a home-cooked family favourite during your visit. Lastly, don’t forget to tell them to have fun. It’s what university is all about! And luckily for Falmouth based students, they have a

Holiday home tips In an ongoing series of holiday home tips, we hear from George at Cornish Traditional Cottages about some of the most desirable features in your Cornish holiday home. Cornwall has one of the most competitive markets in the U for holiday lets. Whilst in July and August there’s plenty of room for all of them, if you’re looking to maximise your return and attract holidaymakers outside high season it’s a different matter. Some ways to make your property more appealing are to keep your colour palette neutral to create a sense of cleanliness and space, it’s then possible to add some vibrant touches of colour through throws and cushions. Furthermore, holidaymakers appreciate flexibility in a holiday cottage so adding some practical features like a zip-link bed so that guests have the option of a double or two single beds is good idea. A large dining table and sofa beds also help provide more options for space. For more information call 01208 893980 or visit www.corncott.com
Meet the artist
Joe Armstrong Joe Armstrong grew up in London where he studied Art and Design at Epsom School of Art for five years. After working in advertising for a number of years in London, Joe moved to Cornwall in 1986 and had a successful 30-year career as a raphic esigner. Painting however was always a long-held desire for Joe and he has since digressed into painting full-time. Joe is now showing and selling work in galleries around Cornwall and has collectors and followers around the world. I get so excited when confronted with a blank canvas on my easel. I love utilising colour to represent natural surroundings. I also love the texture of oil paint on canvas and use a palette knife and my hands to create

News & views Tales from an underwater world The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a charity that rescues and rehabilitates grey seal pups from around the Cornish coastline. Each season, the sanctuary rehabilitates more than 70 pups that have been rescued for various reasons, from malnourishment to being separated from their mum. The sanctuary also provides a permanent home to animals that need special care from the expert Animal Care team. When you visit, you can experience wonderful marine animals up close and personal, and learn all about their individual stories. Grey seals are the most common species found around the Cornish coastline, but did you know that they are incredible divers and can stay underwater for up to 45 minutes at a time?
To learn more about the fascinating marine world and to hear the residents’ amazing rescue stories, be sure to pay the Cornish Seal Sanctuary a visit. For more information visit sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.org

Showcasing the very best of Cornish art Head to The Summerhouse Gallery in Penzance and you’ll find a beautiful, welcoming space that displays a stunning selection of Cornish art. Located only a stone’s throw from the wonderful St Michael’s Mount, the aim is to create the perfect place to discover painting, jewellery, sculpture and glass in a relaxed manner. The beauty of art is in its ability to connect. This is the ethos that sits at the core of Summerhouse, with varying artists from the established to the up and coming. Owner Jayne Elliott tells us: “We are delighted to announce that Imogen Bone is our featured artist of September and as part of the show we will be holding a meet the artist event here in the gallery. ‘Still Waters’ is a beautiful, expressive body of work that
Environmentally
will be supported by some of the best Cornish art throughout September.” For more information call 01736 711400 or visit www.summerhousegallery.co.uk
For sustainable carpets, choose high quantity 80% to 100% wool from suppliers such as Axminster, Brockway and Penthouse, as it’s a kinder material than plastic for the environment. Similarly Moduleo is an eco-conscious brand, manufactured in a Belgium production plant that meets the strictest EU air and water properties. There’s loads to do this autumn
at the Polurrian Situated atop the cliffs with panoramic coastal views, the Polurrian is an incredible location for your holiday. And if you visit during the autumn you can experience the beauty of south west Cornwall when the holiday crowds have dispersed! There’s so much to experience in the local area, with local gardens and attractions to explore while the weather is still mild. The hotel is also situated on the South West Coast Path, which offers miles of stunning walks and convenient access to Polurrian Cove beach. And for those looking to explore further afield, the Lizard peninsula is renowned for its unusual geology, array of botanical life, expanses of heathland and beautiful wildlife.
To remind us all to survey our home security this autumn, October is Home Security Month. With this in mind it’s important to choose the right garden fencing, and Colourfence is an excellent candidate. The surface is smoother, making it harder for burglars to get a foothold and climb into your garden; the material is tough, so it can’t be easily damaged or destroyed; and it isn’t susceptible to fire the same way wooden alternatives are. Colourfence also produce high quality secure gates, which are made from a combination of Colorbond steel and square tubes. The gates come in a variety of sizes and lengths and can come with a range of locks, handles and drop bolts. So, if you want to secure your home
make sure to get in touch with the Colourfence team. For more information call 01840 537547 or visit www.colourfencecornwall.co.uk

The museum will be taken over for two weeks to host the ‘Helston Makes It’ festival from 14th to 28th September (with free entry!). The programme includes workshops, demonstrations and talks. On 28th September the final event welcomes demonstrations of blacksmiths, crab pot makers, textile artists, quilt makers, serpentine turners and many more skilled makers. who have been inspired to set their famous books in Cornwall. So what are you waiting for? Go and be entertained! For more information call 01326 564027 or visit www.museumsincornwall.org.uk
Don’t miss Fire & Steam: BikeLights 2019
Twin ‘BikeLights’ illuminated, bicyclebased events, in Wadebridge on Saturday 12th and Bodmin on Sunday 13th October, will host wonderful, wheeled artist and community light creations and installations, including a ‘Coasters Camel’ light locomotive.
Other creative learning experiences for schools and the community will include heritage visits to partners, Bodmin & Wenford Railway and Pencarrow, while new public displays and materials, created especially for local museums and online, will help this unique heritage reach new audiences.
Discover a school where children come home with more than a good education. Interior workshops
A breathtaking
exhibition by Kurt Jackson In this mesmerising new body of work, leading contemporary artist Kurt Jackson immerses himself – sometimes literally – in a tributary of the Helford river. This unique landscape of sessile oak woodland that fringes the Helford river famously inspired Daphne du Maurier’s 1941 novel Frenchman’s Creek and continues to inspire countless artists. For this exhibition, the Jackson Foundation will host a fascinating series of events and workshops in partnership with the conservation charities Plantlife, the National Trust and the Helford Marine Conservation Group, each of which work to protect and promote the delicate ecosystem of this unique corner of Cornwall.
at Cotton Mills Design House
“This is a fragile place, a delicate and ancient piece of land and water – a beautiful place to linger, to watch and to witness.” – Kurt Jackson ‘Kurt Jackson: Frenchman’s Creek’ runs until November 2nd at the Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just. Open Wednesday to Saturday. For more information call 01736 787638 or visit www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com
After the recent move into their purpose built premises in Truro, the Cotton Mills team are setting up exciting interior workshops. Owner Ali Cary tells us: “After years of helping clients, the main question is always, ‘where do I start?’ So, as part of the new store’s objective, we are now offering workshops to get people off the ground!”
Waste not, want not with Cornico Cornico Coffee is excited to announce the opening of its all-new, zero-waste coffee roastery! To celebrate, the team are keen to showcase the unique characteristics of their coffee offerings, with an emphasis on seasonality, whilst raising money for a great cause, with a Macmillan coffee morning.
So, for a pick me up that’s sure not to leave you feeling down about your contribution to a sustainable future, why not try a cup of Cornico Coffee?
Mood Boards are a great way of expressing yourself and can really help define the look you are after. The Cotton Mills team are delighted that DESIGNERS GUILD are going to run the first Mood Board workshop. During the four-hour workshop you’ll hear a talk by a leading DG designer, before being shown how to create your own mood board using DG fabrics. Taking place on Friday 27th September between 10am and 2pm, places cost just £25 but are limited, so be sure to secure yours soon by emailing mail@cotton-mills.co.uk

Every year, 500,000 tons of waste coffee grounds end up in landfill. At Cornico Coffee Roasters, the team are always thinking about their impact on the environment, which is reflected in all of their products. They’ve gone to great lengths to provide a sustainable packing solution, their coffee bags are bio-oxo and bio-degradable, their labels are made form a combination of sugarcane and hemp, even their tape is made from cellulose!
What do you need for a break away? Secluded coves, coast path walks, and rural beauty close to the fishing village of Mevagissey – so come to Bodrugan and stay in a comfortable ensuite wooden cabin with views of 40 miles of coastline and an indoor heated swimming pool. Watch the stars and snuggle up by the firepit.

Famous for its Bluebell Festival, Enys ouse is set to be filled with antiques and fine art, which once adorned this historic building. Ludgate ouse Antiques will be hosting the first Enys Antiques and Decorative Fair from 28th to 29th September. The fair is being organised in conjunction with Enys Gardens by Ralph Retallack and Nicki Fuller, providing an opportunity for Cornwall to showcase quality antiques and home furnishings, gardenalia, architectural salvage, objet D’art, bijouterie and an excellent choice of period furniture. Dealers have been carefully selected to complement one another and will display items throughout the house and garden so you can wander through both, discovering the stunning wares on offer. The beautifully shabby décor of Enys is a designer’s dream and a fantastic
backdrop for dealers to display their antiques. The bare plaster walls and floorboards, sweeping staircase flooded by the roof lantern and tall oak library shelves speak of another time and provide a dramatic setting for the first antiques fair to be hosted here. We hear from Nicki who tells us: “For some time we have felt there’s a gap for a quality country house fair of this type in Cornwall, and like so many others we fell in love with Enys the first time we visited. Our aim is to establish the Antiques Decorative Fair as a not-to-miss date in the calendar, one which dealers and buyers alike will look forward to. We would also like to thank Wendy Fowler (co-owner) and Emma Powell - Thomas (Events Organiser) of Enys for their support in this venture.”

Why do Bluebird Carers care? While most of us help each other regularly, few stop to consider why we do it. So, why do we help those in need? Helping each other, it turns out, affects pretty much every area of our daily lives – family, health, education, and work, all have some element of helping that is necessary for their e cient function. Statistics show that those who consciously help others are happier and healthier than those who don’t. So what does this mean? It means that helping other people can benefit you both mentally and physically. At Bluebird Care the team help and support each other daily, providing daily care and support for clients and enabling them to stay in the comfort of their own homes. The care team help in many different ways, from making someone smile and enabling them to experience new things for the first time, to holding someone’s hand when they’re upset by events beyond their control. Bluebirds
couldn’t imagine doing anything else. We hear from Emma, who tells us: “Being able to give our clients the support they need to live day to day is extremely rewarding. Sometimes we are confronted with the harsh realities of people struggling to overcome illness or disability and this encourages us to appreciate the little things in life that we all take for granted. Each day we leave work feeling satisfied that we have done our best to help – and that is why we help others.” For more information call 01872 276006 or visit www.bluebirdcare.co.uk

ith a rich seafaring history that spans well over a millennium, before they were tin miners and smugglers, the Cornish were fishermen. Cornwall sits at a maritime crossroads with Gulf Stream currents bringing warm water species, and cooler northern currents bringing cold water species. As a result, Cornwall’s fishing grounds are home to an astonishing diversity of fish, shellfish and crustaceans, a fact that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the many seafood restaurants who are lucky enough to be able to pick from the incredible selection of seafood that the uchy’s rich waters have to offer. With numerous fishing villages, ports and harbours dotted around Cornwall’s coastline, some of the most popular fish restaurants are based in these areas. Take athan Outlaw’s two restaurants in Port Isaac for example: estaurant athan Outlaw and Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen (nathan-outlaw.com . Both champion the use of Cornish fish and seafood and boast views of the surrounding coastline. Outlaw’s Fish itchen is housed within a traditional 15th century fisherman’s cottage, and provides a menu filled with unique dishes created from the freshest seafood landed from the surrounding waters each day. We hear from ead Chef, Tim Barnes, who tells us The sea and fishermen dictate our menu and we never compromise on quality or sustainability.” The majority of the fish served in athan Outlaw’s restaurants is from Cornwall, predominantly Port Isaac, ewlyn and Looe. ou don’t need to go far to get the best crab and lobster in the world, making it a no-brainer to source locally.

Similarly, Rick Stein has restaurants located in some of Cornwall’s most acclaimed harbour towns (rickstein.com . The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, for example, is famous for establishing an international reputation for the freshest fish and shellfish, often landed on the doorstep. Chef irector, Jack Stein, tells us The local fishing industry is essential to everything we do, without them we wouldn t be here. The fishermen provide us with great quality seafood, we cook it simply there s nothing better. Padstow based fisherman Johnny Murt has a close relationship with Stein’s and ventures out of the Camel Estuary and towards Trevose ead or Port Isaac for his catch. When it comes to fishing he has this to say When the weather’s good and your fishing is good, there isn’t a job in the world that can touch it.”

Providing exceptional seafood sourced from around Cornwall, you can enjoy a sit down meal or take your fish away to prepare at home. As a measure of its fabulous fayre, Prawn on the Lawn was featured in the 2019 edition of the Michelin Guide and was listed in the Sunday Times’ Top 100 estaurants for 2018. This restaurant and fishmonger provides the perfect spot to snap up something tasty for dinner, or sample dishes prepared by the talented kitchen team. The daily changing menu relies on what the fishermen have hauled in that morning and is made up of small plates as well as whole fish and shellfish straight from the counter. Owners ick and atie Toogood tell us We focus on being as seasonal and sustainable as possible, so nearly all of our seafood is sourced from Cornwall. We have our fishermen, Johnny Murt and his brother Martin who are 5th generation fishermen based in Padstow and who supply us with crab, lobster, mackerel and pollack. We also source day-boat fish from ewlyn and St Ives further down the coast. To ensure that we’re offering the freshest seafood, our menu at Prawn on the Lawn changes daily, as it’s very much dependent on what catch the fishermen bring in that day.”

Stunning Porthilly oysters
Located across the Camel Estuary in Rock you’ll find The Mariners Public ouse, re-launched by Paul and Emma Ainsworth in May this year paul-ainsworth.co.uk . The pub looks out over the Camel Estuary and offers an all-day menu using the exceptional local produce that Cornwall has to offer. Paul tells us: “In my opinion, Cornwall produces the best oysters in the world. The very best, however, are Porthilly oysters. ock Shellfish is run by Tim Marshall and his son Luke and they’re based in Porthilly on the Camel Estuary. Tim and his family started out as dairy farmers, then 30 years ago diversified into shellfish. Their oysters lay on beds in the clean sandy waters of the Camel Estuary meaning there’s a good ratio between saltiness (from the sea) and freshwater from the river . This produces a beautifully plump oyster with a creamy, fresh and almost buttery flavour. We are so lucky to have such a unique product on our doorstep and at The Mariners you can enjoy these world-class oysters while looking over exactly where they came from, just 500 yards away.”

We all looked on as the wooden hut that houses The Mussel Shoal was constructed at the beginning of the summer season, and was subsequently filled with a brilliant selection of local drinks and an offering of fresh seafood. The location on the harbour head is simply stunning, as you can watch the tide slowly rise and fall and witness the mussels arrive, ready to be prepared by the friendly team of staff. Founded by local elvin Batt, The Mussel Shoal aims to provide exceptional seafood in a relaxed, rustic environment right on the water s edge. Catching up with elvin, he tells us Porthleven has some amazing fine dining eateries, what I wanted to do was introduce something a little different and a bit more laid back. We have a small kitchen so we encourage people to come and enjoy the view our by-line is ‘fun not fine dining’ and that’s the kind of atmosphere we like to promote.” The team source all the fish locally using mussels from The Cornish Shellfish Company based in week and the rest of the fish from St Ives. It’s safe to say that they’ve had an amazing season so far and are constantly looking at ways to continue to improve the customer experience. The location and nature of the business means it’s only open during the summer season, so make sure to head down and make the most of the beautiful views and delicious offering of seafood before it closes for the winter!

The harbour town of Falmouth lends itself entirely to enjoying a fish dish alongside a refreshing tipple. The buzzing town has a great selection of bars and restaurants, and recently opened estaurant ik Boyle has caught our eye thanks to its high-end offering of carefully crafted dishes. What stands out to us is the use of locally sourced produce throughout the menu, featuring Falmouth bay lobster and scallops, south coast hake fillet, Helford river oysters and Porthleven day boat turbot. It’s great to see a restaurant commit to supporting the local fishing industry and we love the fact that the provenance of the food is made explicitly clear it makes it that much more enjoyable to know you’re eating seafood that’s been landed just a stone’s throw from the restaurant. Another business that stands out is Fish For Thought or o g o . Marrying the expertise and personal service of a traditional fishmonger with the speed and convenience of online shopping and direct delivery, Fish For Thought provides unbeatably fresh Cornish seafood, delivered to your door. The company also provides healthy and convenient fish and sauce packages so that you can create a delicious meal with the freshest fish. We want to inspire more people to cook and enjoy incredible seafood and a happy, healthy lifestyle,” says owner Paul Trudgian.

onstructed early in the 19th century, Hendra is a beautiful former farmhouse located in the picturesque parish of St Kew, near to Cornwall’s north coast and the bustling market town of Wadebridge. Hendra has recently been renovated to an extremely high standard, providing the ideal combination of modernity coupled with the traditional beauty of a listed building. As well as having excellent family sized accommodation, it also offers considerable flexibility as it provides the current owners with a good income from two holiday letting elements – a detached two bedroom holiday cottage (Little Hendra) located within the grounds as well as a spacious annexe (Pippins), which can be configured as a self-contained annexe or incorporated back into the main house layout, without changing the structure of the house. The heart of the home at Hendra has got to be the gorgeous farmhouse kitchen with an adjoining dining room, creating an open space perfect for entertaining and enjoying time together as a family. Outside, the garden catches the afternoon and evening sunshine and has an attractive lawn, bordered by a gravelled pathway and raised beds. There’s also a sizeable grass paddock, a large parking area in front of the detached double garage and modern outbuilding that is currently used as a gym. The stunning layout and mesmerising location of this property has got to be seen to be believed and we highly recommend organising a viewing to fully appreciate what Hendra has to offer.

he current owners have undertaken a stunning conversion of this former chapel; built in 1902 it has been transformed into a beautiful and spacious home, offering the discerning buyer light and bright living spaces and cleverly designed accommodation. Many original features have been maintained with curved ceilings and the unmistakable chapel style windows. 2 Cedar Chapel now lends itself to the use of the modern family, it also has potential to support dependent relatives or to be run as a bed and breakfast thanks to the high quality design and en-suite bathrooms. The large chapel has been converted into two separate properties but it certainly doesn’t have the feeling of being semi-detached; we wholeheartedly recommend viewing the property to fully appreciate what it has to offer. The open-plan living area fills the home with a sense of space and allows light to flood into the home the kitchen has been fitted to a high standard with a traditional cottage style and features an inset Belfast sink overlooking the surrounding farmland. One of the bedrooms is located on the ground floor and the other three are upstairs alongside the family bathroom. Located near the rural community of St Martin just five miles from the ancient market town of Helston, the property provides a peaceful oasis with far-reaching views of the countryside. The renowned waters of the Helford river are also just a short drive away, as is the picturesque fishing village of Coverack and neighbouring St Keverne.

or those looking forward to experiencing the perfect getaway, Cole Rayment and White Holidays has a wealth of local knowledge to tap into and years of experience finding both clients and owners the perfect holiday property. So make sure to get in touch with the dedicated team and discover the perfect location for your dream holiday home. Padstow has become known as the jewel in the crown of north Cornwall and the holiday letting season now extends throughout the year across all four seasons. Padstow is of course world-renowned for its excellent offering of restaurants thanks to acclaimed eateries the likes of Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant and Paul Ainsworth’s Michelin starred No.6, which are complemented by Padstow Brewing Company and the excellent Bin Two wine bar. It’s therefore unsurprising that business is booming for Cole ayment and White, as Padstow and the surrounding area are highly sought-after locations. The villages along the coastline to Padstow boast some of the most spectacular beaches in north Cornwall, famously named with St Merryns’ slogan Seven Bays for Seven ays , illustrating the possibility to spend a week away exploring some of Cornwall’s most beautiful coves. Take Trevone Bay for example, which features a delightful sandy beach that attracts
swimmers and surfers all year round. Similarly arlyn Bay features a half-mile stretch of sandy beach, perfect for swimming and surfing it’s also backed by dunes, low cliffs and fields. Mother Ivey’s Bay, on the other side of Cataclews Point is small and secluded with a steeply shelving beach for quiet afternoons away from the crowds. Then there are the greens and fairways of Trevose olf and Country Club that stretches back from the sands at Booby’s Bay another surfer’s favourite). Moving south, the next beach you’ll encounter is Constantine Bay fringed by sand dunes it provides swimming and year-round surfing facilities. Treyarnon Bay is a narrow sandy beach with rocks on its northern side providing many rock pools and a large natural swimming pool, and the seventh and final beach is at Porthcothan Bay. Cole Rayment and White has a well established reputation for selling quality properties and prides itself in offering delightful holiday properties located around the Camel Estuary and the surrounding bays.

The Cornwall Home Show team are proud to be supporting the Global Natural Healthcare Trust Charity, registration no. 1107 2 . This amazing non-profit organisation is headed up by Dame Annette Montague-Thomas, who from her clinics in Cornwall, Scotland, Ireland and South Africa, successfully treats thousands of patients every month who suffer at the hands of diseases and illnesses, include Lyme disease, HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. STYLISHLY SECURE
Just Shutters – providing style and peace of mind with stunning security shutters.
é ABOVE You shouldn’t need to sacrifice on style when securing your home
T
he UK’s leading independent specialist shutter company has unveiled its new range of security shutters, providing a flawless solution for indoor and outdoor home security without compromising on style. The Portchester Aluminium Security Shutters by Just Shutters have been designed following the news that seven homes in the UK are burgled every minute! This, coupled with the fact that 14% of Britons have no home security, encouraged Just Shutters to find a solution. The corrosion resistant security shutters are designed to match non-security shutters, giving properties a consistent and finished look throughout. Indoors, they look like contemporary plantation shutters and, from the outside, are an aesthetic solution to security bars or grills. While serving the dual purpose of burglary system and stylish window dressing, the shutters provide all of the benefits offered by adjustable louvers, including the ability to control light, privacy and ventilation. “We know that people take great pride in the way their homes look, but this doesn’t always mean people are choosing the safest options,” explains Just Shutters Founder, Chris Rocker. “We wanted to give our customers something
which meant they didn’t have to compromise; stylish, durable and extremely tough, they provide an additional layer of security and peace of mind.” Manufactured in South Africa, these shutters are made from architectural grade aluminium with an intruder resistant, powder-coated top and bottom guide system to prevent them from being lifted. They fasten into place using a patented strip-proof Italian lock system that bolts to secure the top and bottom at the same time. There’s also the added option of master or multiple keys, as well as having the locking system available on both sides. As with all products in the Just Shutters range, the security shutters are made-to measure and come with a lifetime guarantee. What’s more, you can choose custom colour options and shutter styles, including full height, bi-fold and by-pass, to suit all colour schemes and décor tastes. So if you’re hoping to add a little security to your home without having to sacrifice on the aesthetics you love, be sure to contact the team!

A SECLUDED CABIN Good Life Joinery have recently had the opportunity to help create a gorgeous wood cabin on Cornwall’s north coast.

G
ood Life Joinery owner Stuart Bowman-Harris has recently completed an exciting project on Cornwall’s north coast. The remote location made for an added challenge but Stuart and the team worked around this problem and helped to create a truly beautiful building that is now a fully fledged holiday let with Unique Home Stays. It’s unsurprising to us here at Cornwall Living that the cabin is featured as a ‘unique stay’ as it is truly an exceptional building. As well as working around the remote location, the Good Life team also had the brief for the building to be moveable, so it’s built onto a steel frame chassis with wheels. “It was an interesting build to say the least!” Stuart exclaims, and the result is truly spectacular. Various different types of wood have been combined within the property to create a plethora of different textures and tones, the light wood decking leads into the warm fiery orange tones for the main walls within the cabin and this is contrasted with a dark exposed oak floor and wood clad walls that are painted a deep indigo. The overall effect gives you a sense off being amongst the trees at different parts of the day. From the bright morning light to the deep blues of a wooded forest complemented by an earthy floor, you’re surrounded by nature in

the comforting folds of trees. Other stylish features include the bespoke furniture and solid oak sliding doors. The rustic feel is complemented by copper fittings and vintage tiling and it’s unquestionably evident that a lot of careful attention went into creating this building. Unique Stays says of the property: “Juneberry is settled in the quiet idyll of rural bliss. Built with love and raised with only the most natural and sustainable materials around, this luxury cottage in Cubert is a reclaimed utopia of vintage florals, organic craftsmanship and a true atone-with-nature feel.” What’s evident from the quality of the build is that Good Life Joinery work to an extremely high standard with careful craftsmanship and attention to detail. Creating beautiful buildings that stand out from the crowd, if you have a home improvement project that requires joinery, make sure to get in touch with the Good Life team.

HIT THE ROOF We catch up with the Cornwall Zinc Roofing team and find out what’s new this season.
F
almouth based company Cornwall inc oofing Ltd is renowned for its expertise, safety, reliability and experience to get the job done with minimum fuss and maximum effect. We hear from Director Ross Bland who tells us The traditional metal roofing market has grown in recent years and zinc is by far the most popular metal used in ‘Standing Seam’ roofing and cladding, being used since the early 1800’s. As well as providing a contemporary finish, which looks great with both new builds and older properties, correctly installed zinc can also last in excess of 100 years, as opposed to the 25 to 50 years associated with alternative systems.” Few materials are as versatile as zinc, which is available in a range of natural and pre weathered finishes, virtually maintenance free and capable of dealing with complex designs. It’s also environmentally friendly, being fully recyclable. However, the company also recognises that customers’ preferences and budgets are individual, and therefore also specialise in other materials such as copper, steel and aluminium. The team are trained, professional and courteous and you’re guaranteed quality workmanship in whichever type of product is specified. Working with both private clients and businesses throughout Cornwall, Ross and the team have built a sterling reputation.
To meet the growing demand, Cornwall inc oofing are relocating to larger premises in Truro, which will not only provide a greater capacity for offsite fabrication but also a place where potential customers will get to see the products and various options available. The company is a member of the Federation of Traditional Metal oofing Contractors (FTMRC), and proudly graded ‘Excellent’. This organisation seeks to improve the workmanship standards of installation and widen the technical design knowledge necessary to protect the integrity of the installation of metal roofs. To be accepted as a member of the FTMRC shows that Cornwall inc oofing has met the high standards that they seek across all the different metals used in roofing and that all the installers are trained to their high standard which ultimately means that you, the customer, get the best results possible. To find out more about the benefits of zinc roofing and for a carefully prepared quote, be sure to give Ross and the team a call.

Positive
CHANGE We hear from the team at Kuggar Stoves why stoves are still very much sustainable.
I
DISCOVER MORE Another way to ensure that your stove is running as sustainably as possible is to make sure your logs are dry and well seasoned. Learn how to season your wood, Scandinavian style, with Lars Mytting’s book Norwegian Wood.
n the midst of this incredible weather we’ve been experiencing, heating your home is probably the last thing on your mind however, summer season sales mean investing now could save you money and allow you to bed down for the winter in comfort. Another thing stopping you from investing in a stove, other than the incredibly warm weather, might be the fact that we’re increasingly hearing how burning wood and coal negatively impacts upon the environment, and may soon be banned entirely. The team at Kuggar Stoves, however, have assured us that this isn’t the case. Co-founder Amanda Priest tells us: “This scaremongering is simply a myth, stoves have adapted from the days of open fires and now provide a sustainable option to heat your homes.” The basis of the problem lies with open fires, not stoves and in fact the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases is fossil fuels, but that’s another discussion entirely. The reason open fires are not as e cient as stoves is due to the fact that they’re less controllable than closed appliances, and therefore the emissions that they produce are high in particulates. The cities of the past would be shrouded in a thick smog from open fires however, progression in design means that closed appliances – stoves, for instance – produce minimal emissions in comparison.
Amanda continues: “Over half the stoves we have on display at Kuggar Stoves are already exceeding emission expectations by more than 50% in anticipation of the 2022 Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) regulations. Our range includes brands such as Termatch, Town and Country, Stovax Vision and Vogue, to name a few; not to mention the Hunter Cleanburn range of stoves that have been in production for over ten years now and are well within the new standards!” There’s nothing like arriving home from a long autumnal walk, taking off your boots and watching the flames flicker as you warm your cockles. Having a stove doesn’t have to negatively impact the environment, as long as you make sure you choose a sustainable style that suits your home, and even though it’s more apt to be thinking about air conditioning at the moment, the summer sales mean it’s actually the prime time to invest.

amily run Bude Windows & Conservatories has been supplying Cornwall with quality windows, conservatories, orangeries and doors since 1995. Owned and run by the Britton family, Managing Director Alan Britton tells us: “Building has always been in my blood. I’ve worked in the industry since 1970 and as business progressed it wasn’t long before we branched out way beyond just installing new windows and doors; we soon became known in Cornwall for supplying and fitting all sorts of high-quality structures, and I put the secret of our success down to never compromising on quality, whether it be in the materials and products we use or the high standard of workmanship we’ve become known for.” It’s possible to transform your home with specialist glazing and the Bude Windows team are proud to offer a variety of options. A leading product that they’re happy to provide to customers is the market leading Guardian Warm Roof, which enables you to transform your conservatory into an all year round living space. Your conservatory can be designed with a range of different roof styles with the potential to incorporate skylights as well, allowing light to flood into your new living
space. Engineered for quality and designed for you, these conservatories provide a high performance thermal structure solution that allows you to enjoy your conservatory as an all year round living space. learn more about the solutions Oltco can offer commercial clients. “We work closely with all our commercial clients to ensure that the solutions we provide exceed their expectations,” explains Oltco founder, Tom Stringer. “Our commercial kitchen floors, for instance, are durable and hardwearing; Polyurethane resin screeds are an ideal solution for such an environment.” Both anti-slip and easy to clean, PU resin screeds from Oltco promise to provide your business with an easily manageable, seamless surface that does not crack or have any joins, therefore minimising the risk of dirt or bacteria becoming trapped. Additionally, as a result of PU resin screeds’ solvent-free properties, the solution can even be installed in live environments, without the risk of tainting food products or disrupting daily activity.

THE FLOORING
When it comes to choosing suitable flooring the team at M H Flooring are here to help.

f you actually stop and take the time to look at your flooring, it can be surprising how much of an impact it can have on the look and ambiance of your home. If your carpet is looking a bit worse for wear, or you’ve moved into a new house and the flooring doesn’t match up with your interior design style, then investing in a new floor can make all the difference. It might even be the case that you’ve simply outgrown your current type of flooring and need to upgrade due to lifestyle changes, such as having children or getting a puppy, making an easy-clean hard floor a better option compared to carpet. We get some advice from the owner of M Flooring, Mark oneychurch, who has over 30 years’ experience in the flooring trade, 18 of which have been spent running his own business. Mark tells us If you are thinking about changing your flooring, I would recommend looking at all the options available and we can then discuss the product best suited to your needs.” When it comes to choosing suitable flooring, hardwood flooring is a popular choice for a classic, timeless look with only a small
amount of maintenance to keep it looking its best. owever, trends have changed over recent years with luxury vinyl tiles LVT such as Amtico becoming increasingly popular, as they are easy to maintain and come with a long warranty as standard. Carpet is still traditionally the choice for the luxury touch as nothing beats the feeling of stepping out of bed to the warmth of carpet underfoot. Living in Cornwall we’re lucky to be surrounded by sea and countryside” says Mark, the ideal flooring for a family home in Cornwall would therefore be hard wearing and easy to keep clean I speak from experience as in our home we spend a lot of time in the garden with family, friends and our dog, so chose Amtico LVT flooring as it’s extremely hard wearing and easy to clean.” The team at M Flooring have years of experience to provide you with impartial advice and flooring to suit your home and budget. Mark explains We offer a complete service including initial consultation, survey and design, with a free no-obligation quote. We have recently completed a large water mill conversion near the north Cornish

Working closely with our client Simon Williams of Williams Creative omes, we supplied and fitted a variety of flooring including new hardwood flooring, reclaimed Parquet, Amtico LVT and Sisal Carpets to meet our brief, combining traditional with contemporary. In the feature lounge we fitted reclaimed parquet flooring, which we sanded and re-finished to create a stunning and unique floor.” As one of the longest running independent flooring companies in Cornwall, the M Flooring showroom displays flooring to suit everyone. With the addition of the new Amtico stands the showroom now has even more to offer customers. Mark tells us We work very closely with our suppliers to provide excellent quality and value for money. We’re busier than ever due to having good product knowledge and excellent customer service.” And the customer testimonials speak for themselves one customer wrote Mark did an excellent job advising us about, and fitting our new floor. WORRIED ABOUT
wood burners? We find out why wood burners are not as bad for the environment as people may think.
R
ecent announcements in regulation changes for wood burners have caused concern for a lot of people who want to invest in a new wood burner, or indeed keep their current one running. The press tend to miss-lead people into thinking wood burners are bad for the environment and will be banned in 2022 but Wendron Stoves assure us that this information isn't correct. Woodburners are in fact a good source of energy, especially the new Ecodesign stove, which is beneficial to everyone. The only change is that retailers are prevented from
selling stoves which do not meet the new regulations. Wendron Stoves are pleased to announce that they’ve recently joined the SIA Retail Group, allowing customers to gain access to the latest research and information that modern, low emission wood-burning stoves are here to stay. This includes having updates from Wendron Stoves concerning SIA announcements, and being able to contact the SIA Technical Committee for support and information. We hear from Erica Malkin, Secretary General of the SIA who tells us: “We are delighted to have Wendron Stoves on board as a member of the SIA Retail Group.

The company joins a growing number of specialist, independent retailers that have enrolled. The SIA Retail Group has been set up to positively promote the wood-burning stove and fireplace industry to the public, and to give independent retailers the information to assure their customers that modern, low emission wood burning stoves are here to stay.” This is why the SIA Retail Group has been launched as they are able to provide customers with the correct information and advice and this is why Wendron Stoves has joined them, because its important for everyone to know the facts. The question of wood and fuel is another important aspect to consider when it comes to the environment and the e ciency of your stove. The team at Wendron Stoves believe that the secret to a good fire is high-quality wood, which is why they supply kiln-dried logs that have a moisture content of 20% or lower. If the moisture content is too high, your fire will burn poorly and if you use treated wood, this will produce harmful fumes and cause damage to your chimney. The kilndried logs are available as single bags or you can bulk buy and get them delivered direct to your door trust us it s definitely worth choosing high-quality kiln dried wood. The Wendron Stoves showrooms located in Helston and Truro allow you to browse their collection of stoves in both contemporary and traditional styles. And you can also take the opportunity to chat to the experienced team: “We have worked in the stove industry for over 35 years, and we like to think we have an intimate knowledge of our industry. So when you come to us for help, you can be assured that we will give you the highest quality advice together with superb customer service,” explains Marketing Manager Hollie Edgcombe.
The cosiness of a wood burner is hard to beat; humans have always had a relationship with fire and Wendron Stoves is happy to be able to provide stoves that allow you to continue to enjoy the beauty of fire, whilst remaining conscious of the new environmental regulations. Plus their membership with the SIA Retail Group allows them to stay up to date with any developments and remain confident in the viability of wood burners. So, don’t let the bad press change your mind on investing in a wood burner, because there’s always a solution to the problem.

GOING GREEN Lilly Lewarne continue to prove their pedigree in the field of environmentally aware architecture.
Telok Estates Ltd
Telok Estates Ltd
I
n recent issues we’ve learned how Lilly Lewarne Architects have forged a reputation for stunning, creative and honest designs with the greatest consideration for the environment. Bringing in-depth local knowledge to each project they undertake and reflecting them in the build is what this company does, all thanks to the team’s conscientious approach to architecture. One project that stands testament to Lilly Lewarne’s approach is Fairglen, a superb development by Percy Williams in Hayle that achieves both Passivhaus accreditation and an ‘A’ energy rating in all its properties. What’s ‘Passivhaus’ accreditation, you ask. According to the website, the Passivhaus Trust is an independent, non-profit organisation that provides leadership in the UK for the adoption of the Passivhaus standard and methodology – the leading international low-energy design standard. It represents a highly effective means of providing high standards of residential comfort and health, while at the same time reducing energy use and carbon emissions from UK buildings, something we can surely all get on board with! Fairglen was a pioneering project designed with Percy Williams & Sons to test the viability of low-energy houses for open market sale. Lilly Lewarne designed 11 dwellings, which were completed in 2008, all meeting the then Ecohomes Level 5 certification, ensuring a holistic approach to sustainable living.
Many of the energy saving technologies used during this first phase, at the time, were at the peak of innovation, including ground source heat pubs, photovoltaic solar panels and underfloor heating. But their work didn’t stop there, as in 2016 building commenced on Phase 2. For this stage, the experts at Lilly Lewarne designed 20 new Passivhaus eco homes, also working closely with Ben Quinn at Cube Vision Studio to develop accurate computer generated depictions of the homes before they were built. Upon completion, each terraced or semi-detached unit in this phase was constructed to meet full Passivhaus standards. Considering that worldwide there are only around 65,000 homes that boast this same accolade, this is no mean feat! It’s also proof that the architects at Lilly Lewarne have well and truly earned their reputation – working on both domestic and commercial projects alike to realise visions that are as unique as their clients themselves.

DID YOU KNOW? The Cornwall Building Group commended Lilly Lewarne for their aesthetically pleasing design which “encourages community and permits individual privacy”, praising their response, in partnership with Percy Williams and Son, for finding a solution to the challenge of “mass housing that is environmentally positive, commercially viable and attractive to inhabit.”

Not Just Made In Britain,
Made In Cornwall!
When we started CREAM CORNWALL back in 2012, we had a vision for our brand but no money, so we had to make a lot of products ourselves. Luckily we both have a practical background in textiles, so we did a lot of screen printing, making lampshades, pouring candles and making diffusers. The only thing we couldn’t do was decorate and fire our bone china, but we did think about buying a kiln! We are passionate about getting our products made in Cornwall and if we can’t get it made here, then we always look for a manufacturer in the UK. We opened our first store in Falmouth in 2016 & our second one in St Ives in 2018 where you can see the beauty & quality of all our fantastic products. So please call in to take a look and buy something great, that’s made in Britain!

MODERN CLASSICS With more than 30 years’ experience, Rustler Yachts makes traditional cruising yachts for the discerning sailor, right here in the Cornwall. ABOVE é Putting the Rustler 57 through her paces off St Mawes RIGHT è Attention to detail is obvious, both above deck and down below
A
s with a Morgan car or a Rolex watch, a Rustler Yacht is an investment for the future. Hand built, bespoke and combing a unique mixture of traditional methods and cutting-edge technology, a Rustler Yacht comes from a pedigree that has become a design classic. Established in Falmouth in 1985, Rustler Yachts moved to its current site between Falmouth and Penryn in 2000. Experiencing steady growth since then, the company now employs over 45 people, many of whom are highly skilled crafts people. All of the yachts are entirely hand built, to the highest specifications, and represent a modern tradition of fast, retro-styled yachts that are a charm to sail. Rustler Yachts has an enviable reputation and a loyal client base, with owners often returning to upgrade or to buy another boat. Placing great emphasis on quality and craftsmanship, customers are encouraged to be involved throughout the build process, ensuring that the end product is exactly what they want and because of that, each Rustler yacht is unique. Chatting with Sales Director, Adrian Jones, he explains the buying process: “Typically, we will first meet a customer about two years before they commit to commissioning a new

yacht. We show them around the production facility, and almost certainly take them for a trial sail. We try to get to know them, and how they intend to sail (and where), and then start to build an idea of how their own boat would be specified.” At ustler achts, commissioning a boat is much more like a partnership than a typical customer-vendor situation. Adrian continues: “Once ordered, we offer as many visits as the new owner can manage. Some boat builders don’t appreciate owners visiting as they are afraid that it can distract from the production process – we take the opposite view. The closer to the ‘build’ of their boat the owner is, the better the relationship they have with it. This also means that the Rustler team, the guys and girls who actually build the boats, get to know who they are building for and that means a lot.” The build team works across three different specialities in the climate controlled factory: engineering, composite and joinery. They all work alongside each other, and know that each discipline is as important as the next. The team covers all age ranges, and as Adrian says: “they are the real stars! We try to make the factory as flexible as possible, and it is, I think, a pretty cool place to work. Personally I still get a kick out of raw materials arriving at one end of the factory and a beautiful yacht emerging from the other ”
The last twelve years has seen the Rustler range grow into a diverse collection of beautiful boats, ranging from a 24ft dayboat to a 57ft world cruiser. So, whether you are a keen day sailor wanting to explore the Cornish coastal waters, a blue water yachtsman or an experienced ocean mariner looking for something to take you across the Atlantic, the choice is yours. Newly commissioned yacht designs are the work of renowned, British boat designer, Stephen Jones, who has built a close relationship with the team in Falmouth over the many years he has been designing Rustler yachts. Each year the team build about five yachts over 37ft and six or seven smaller boats, giving an idea of the amount of work that goes into each one – every piece of engineering, moulding and joinery is carried out by Rustler staff, in the Falmouth factory, making a Rustler yacht Cornish, born and bred. Solid design, build quality and flexibility of build process are at the heart of what makes these yachts special. They are by no means at the less expensive end of the scale, but that is because they are constructed with the very best of British craftsmanship. It is clear that everyone at ustler is passionate about yachts, and this is an enthusiasm that is shared by their owners. The yachts are built for real-life cruising, prioritising comfort and safety at sea, while at the same time being deceptively fast with easy motion. “Above all, we never forget that yachting is supposed to be fun, and we believe that also includes having your own boat built ” concludes Adrian.

Fal River Cottage, Malpas After falling in love with the amazing river views, Lubi and Phil Dee decided to take the leap and purchase Fal River Cottage earlier this year. Since they acquired it, they’ve invested heavily in updating the property, including a brand new bathroom and kitchen, as well as the rear garden, which now boasts not one but two seating areas from which to soak up the spectacular Cornish surroundings. The dog-friendly cottage sleeps three over two comfortable bedrooms. Downstairs, when you’re not out making the most of those incredible views, you’ll find everything you need to make the most of the perfect self-catering stay, including a modern kitchen, BT TV with sports package (perfect for rainy weekends!) and a cosy wood-burning stove, which is just the ticket when you're snuggling up in the evening. Of course, all of us have days when we’d prefer not to cook, so you’ll be pleased to know that the popular Heron Inn is just three doors down. 30 YEARS OF STYLE Debbie Wilson, owner of Mélange in Truro, tells us how she and her team have moved with the times over the last 30 years.
A
fter first walking through Truro s brand new alders Court development 30 years ago, ebbie Wilson knew it was time to engage her entrepreneurial spirit. A hairdresser by trade, ebbie s eye for colour and style helped her realise that there was a gap for an upmarket ladies clothing shop, for the 40-plus woman looking for quality clothing that was different to what the high street had to offer. It wasn’t long before I had signed a 25-year lease and was on my way to opening M lange ” Over the years M lange has changed dramatically, with customers now item buying and mixing fashion pieces with classic staple favourites. Lifestyles are different,” ebbie tells us. Smart, comfortable, casual clothing is now what women want, which is why we now specialise in jeans and casual trousers. A perfect fit is essential ” Of course, M lange has also witnessed the advent of online retail, which has had a huge impact on the high street. Customers are easily drawn into thinking it’s cheaper and easier,” ebbie explains. But it s not. Often when your purchase arrives it isn’t as good as it looked, or the quality and fit aren’t as expected. ere at M lange we’ve always delivered great personal service, and as the shift is gradually drifting back to independent stores, we’re still here in Truro after 30 years, with a helpful team on hand to help choose the perfect clothes for you.” So how does ebbie decide which labels to stock? She explains I have stayed true to some of my collections over the years as they too have changed with the times, however I regularly look at new brands if I feel that I’m lacking a bit of excitement in the season.” Joseph ibkoff is the latest addition popular thanks to its fit and comfort, this fabulous label flatters customers sized 8 to 18, with larger sizes available to order if required. Perfect for travelling, the easy-care fabrics mean they can virtually be worn straight from your suitcase, giving you that instant feel good vibe via timeless designs and a supreme level of comfort.
Spending time with customers, helping them to select items to fit and flatter them and giving them the confidence to try something new whether it’s for work, a holiday or special occasion is what ebbie and her friendly team enjoy most. They understand that whilst we may all feel as if we need a reason to purchase that new dress or sweater, most of the time, we simply need our fashion taste buds tickled

CELEBRATING
Trevails celebrates 100 years of successful high street trading in the city of Truro, but what’s its secret?
S
taking his future on the retail trade, Cornish born Royston John Trevail returned from the Great War with a vision. In the early part of the 20th century, with advances in the manufacturing industry and the beginnings of mass-production, clothing was evolving into an accessible, affordable and desirable consumer commodity. It was no longer just for the established gentry. Fashion was being democratised for the ordinary working man and woman. oyston’s first shop opened at number nine River Street, Truro in 1919. But RJ Trevail didn’t just expect the customers to walk through the door. He had the foresight to realise that in a rural county like Cornwall, you have to sometimes take the product to the people. A century before online shopping and home delivery, RJ Trevail would do a ‘country

round’ on his motorcycle and sidecar, taking a selection of clothing out to his customers, and returning in a week to either pick up the garments or take payment. This kind of personal service is what has made Trevails stand out in an often-volatile retail industry. Indeed, Geoffrey Trevail, Royston’s son and successor once said: “If your staff are as passionate about what they do as you are, and your customers are well looked after, they will return again and again.” Today, the business is managed by Olly Trevail, Geoffrey’s grandson and the great grandson of RJ Trevail. Olly started on the shop floor at 1 years old and is more than just a custodian of a family business. He’s created a sustainable operation that is standing up to the modern-day challenges of high street retail. “I was lucky enough to work with both my grandfather and my father,” Olly tells us. “From them I learned that keeping customers happy is the most important thing. Far too often on the high street, the customer is made to feel invisible. Some stores have great products but there’s no welcome, no ‘hello’. The secret of creating a great shopping experience seems to
have been forgotten. But with the rise of online retail, the high street simply can’t afford to neglect the customers. I believe passionately that our high streets are an integral part of our society – after all we are a ‘nation of shopkeepers’. The belief in personal, face-toface service that my father and grandfather instilled in me has been the key to our success these past 100 years.” Trevails has survived the Great Depression of the late 20s and 30s, a World War, the rapid takeover of the fast fashion industry in the 1 0s, further recessions, the rise of the information age, and its biggest threat to date – the internet. This is because Trevails is first and foremost a people-centred business. The store now stands at 31-32 River Street and employs 20 staff. It continues to attract customers of all ages and its gift is in not only showcasing quality womens and menswear, but in its collection of dynamic, fashionable brands that attract a new generation of customers. From Gant, Barbour and Brook Taverner to Tommy ilfiger, Brax and Scotch Soda, it’s this diverse mix of styles that provides customers with a choice that you can’t find anywhere else on the Cornish high street. From all generations, and from all walks of life, what draws people to Trevails is its ability to make everyone welcome. It bypasses the transactional boundary and retail disconnect that customers can often experience via the internet and instead provides a place where you can touch, try on, visualise and receive expert advice. Put simply, it’s all about trust, honesty and respect: values that are as relevant today as they were 100 years ago.

Treat yourself to a professional facial with MEDfacials in Truro, experts at rejuvenating your skin.
L
ed and founded by Cornwall based GP and Cosmetic Doctor, Dr Joachim Stolte, MEDfacials specialise in providing the latest skin and medical aesthetic treatments, conveniently located in the centre of Truro. The practice offers free cosmetic consultations and a broad range of clinically proven treatments so that you can discover exactly which one will work for you. We hear from Dr Stolte who tells us: “I believe the key to healthy looking skin is to combine a customised at-home regimen with powerful in-clinic treatments and targeted skincare solutions. The result is healthier looking skin with an improvement in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of premature ageing.” Treatments range from advanced skin and hair care treatments to cosmetic injectables and non-surgical skin rejuvenation using medical grade technology. As one of the leading aesthetic skin and hair clinics in the south west, MEDfacials is constantly striving to bring you the most up-to-date treatments and has recently introduced its Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment. So what is Intense Pulsed Light? IPL is the process of using specific wavelengths of light to provide a range of aesthetic and therapeutic treatments. It can be used for permanent hair reduction, photo rejuvenation, acne and vascular lesions. The MEDfacials IPL also features a unique cooling handset, providing the most comfortable treatment experience possible.
There are many benefits of using IPL it works by targeting structures within the skin such as melanin, blood, and water in collagen with wavelengths of light to break down the structure and improve the appearance of the skin. The light pulses also stimulate collagen production which floods to the area, plumping the skin and reducing wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful appearance. Skin problems that benefit from IPL include acne and acne scarring, sun damage, fine lines and forehead wrinkles, as well as uneven skin tone, pigmentation and skin blemishes, to name a few. Unlike many treatments, the MEDfacials IPL is non-invasive as well as highly effective, meaning you can return to work immediately following treatment, so there’s no need to take any additional time out to complete your course. To find out more, get in touch with the MEDfacials team who will be more than happy to talk you through your options.

CHARITY |
CARING
for Cornwall
Cornwall Hospice Care opens more beds for terminally ill patients across Cornwall.
é ABOVE Director of Clinical Services, Gina Starnes
RIGHT Nurses are key to the care delivered by this sterling Cornish charity
A
s the only adult hospice charity in the county, the team at Cornwall Hospice Care know that there are many more families who would benefit from their special care. In the last year they have been investing in their staff and facilities with the aim being to open more beds. Gina Starnes, Director of Clinical Services for the Charity says: “I’m delighted with our progress and pleased to announce that we have opened four more beds this year alone, meaning we now provide nine beds at each hospice – that’s 18 in total for Cornwall with more planned later in this financial year. This directly affects how many people we can care for and we are so grateful for the continued support of the people of Cornwall, as without it we couldn’t open these extra beds.” More beds is fantastic news for families in Cornwall who have a loved one with a terminal illness. However, having more beds open also means the charity needs to increase their nursing capacity to ensure they continue to offer their patients the high level of care they need. Nurses are a key part of the care delivered; they are there for their patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and they are a very special team. Not only are they highly skilled, but they extend
their kindness, compassion and personal touch to whole families, helping everyone spend precious time with their loved ones in peace and dignity. “I worked as a nurse for over 30 years and have had the privilege of spending much of this time in palliative care,” continues Gina, “helping patients, their carers and their families at what is a di cult and highly emotional time. I have seen first hand the difference that hospices make, giving patients and their families the peace, dignity and specialised care they need.” Legacies remain vital to the charity and last year provided 32.5% of their care costs. October will see the charity deliver its first Make A Will Month: a dedicated month to have your Will written and the fee donated to the charity. To find out more about Make A Will Month, to donate to the Cornwall Hospice Care nursing team who are supporting the new beds, or to obtain a copy of the charity’s newly published Impact Report, be sure to get in touch.

Why are you more likely to sell your property with Rohrs & Rowe? “Rohrs & Rowe are simply the best estate agents in Cornwall, particularly if you are selling a higher end property and want your marketing to jump out at potential purchasers. Their photography and sales particulars, both online and hard copy, are first rate and sell the dream of living in Cornwall very well indeed. They produced a state of the art drone video showcasing my property and its location at its best, which was available via their website and social media channels, it was simply breathtaking and really helped to attract viewings. Matthew and Martyn attend each viewing themselves, this gives them a real ability to influence potential purchasers at the most crucial point in the sales process (i.e. the viewings) and to ensure good sales opportunities are not lost. They clearly care about their clients and are passionate about making sure that your house gets the attention it deserves and sells quickly for the best possible price. CHARITY |
FAMILY TIME The kitchen is the heart of the hospice at Little Harbour where families come together to enjoy good food and share experiences with others.
M
aking the most of short and precious lives has been the aim of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) since it started 28 years ago. It now has three children’s hospices in the south west including Little Harbour at Porthpean near St Austell. The charity offers expert medical care, in a home from home environment, for children who sadly are not expected to live into adulthood. The majority of Little Harbour’s care is respite, providing families with short stays where their children’s complex medical needs are met, parents have a break from being primary carers, brothers and sisters are supported by the dedicated sibling team and the whole family can relax, making precious memories together. It also offers palliative care, emergency stays, end of life care and bereavement support. Families often say it is the small things that make the biggest difference, like the chance to sit and eat together, something they find di cult to find time for at home. Food plays a significant role at Little arbour siblings baking, cooks preparing home-cooked meals and families eating together around the dining table. CHSW’s new fundraising initiative, Cook Eat Give, stems from the idea of enjoying good food with friends and family, and this October CHSW invites people to join them for some foodie fundraising. The appeal encourages supporters to get involved by cooking a meal, sharing it with friends and
