Capturing Cornwall

Having trained as a nurse in Exeter, author Gail Rayner now lives and works in Plymouth, where she also crafted her two Cornwall-based novels, Castles and The Lady. Set in very different eras, The Lady is based in a turbulent Cornwall in a time of hunger and crime and follows the story of Lady Tremaine. Now a widow after her husband met an untimely death, she finds herself left with more questions than answers, in a tale of love, murder, sadness and bravery.

Cornwall-based Wolf Rock creative agency has just completed two eyecatching food and drink branding campaigns. The first is for olly’s Drinks – Cornwall’s oldest soft drink manufacturer. Wolf Rock Managing Director, o Downie and her team were called in to give the branding a fresh, revitalised look. “Our brief was to carry out a complete re-brand that would attract attention on shelves and behind bars, says o. nderstanding our client’s strategy and growth aspirations are key to the work we do. The next stage was to give the packaging a cohesive, stand-out appearance.” The same approach was used when chocolatier osh arker asked Wolf ock to devise a brand that would represent the never-to-be-forgotten experience he wanted for his chocolate. osh grew up on his family’s farm in west Cornwall

and enjoyed an idyllic childhood that made the most of our beautiful Cornish landscape, says o. ur concept was to encapsulate that in a series of chocolate moments which t Ives artist, oanna Barry, then brought to life in a collection of lovely illustrations. We’re really pleased with the end result – and the chocolate is excellent too!”

Castles, meanwhile, follows the story of Ann, who has been assigned to cover the filming of a popular television series. Her friend Phoebe is handy with a camera, so Ann invites her along with not-entirely honest pretences, as well as Sue, who is just fun to have around. It’s fair to say that the three friends get a little more than they bargained for. Castles tells a story of friendship, sea and, well, have a read and discover for yourself! For more information visit www.austinmacauley.com/author/ rayner-gail

As well as design, Wolf Rock is a full-service marketing agency that offers strategic advice and consultancy, website development, art direction, copywriting, photography, video and digital marketing. “We create, enhance and manage brands both online and o ine, says o. And we’re delighted to play a creative part in osh’s Chocolate and olly’s ongoing success stories. For more information call 01872 262698 or visit www.wolfrockmarketing.co.uk

Are you selling your home this spring? Spring is a great time to sell your house. The evenings are lighter, everyone’s feeling energised as the sun starts to shine and it’s undoubtedly one of the most popular times of year to think about selling. So, how to ‘get to it’ and breathe some life back into your house? My Place in Cornwall offer some simple ideas to kick-start your spring clean. Firstly, have your carpets professionally cleaned. This will bring them up like new, leaving them looking fresh and inviting. Take down curtains and take off sofa and cushion

Could your project benefit from better insulation?

Cornwall’s newest podcast

goes live

One of the most versatile insulation methods currently available in the UK and Europe is spray foam. Its performance, speed of application and durability outperform just about every type of traditional, pre-manufactured alternative. ThermoFoam Managing Director, Richard Yeo, tells us: “Airtightness is now a vital consideration on all new build projects. Spray foam offers this in abundance, without the need to seal and tape joints. Furthermore, for new build projects that are curved or of unusual shapes, it’s almost impossible to insulate effectively with any form of pre-manufactured insulation. With spray foam however – because it’s installed as a liquid which expands to fill a void – such obstacles are easily overcome.”

Stand out from the crowd

Whether you want to relax on your own or chill out with friends, a hot tub is the perfect addition to any holiday. Cornwall is as popular now as it’s ever been as a holiday destination, but visitors are increasingly looking for somewhere that offers that little

Having carried out many different installations for a range of clients across the Duchy, Richard and the ThermoFoam team can confidently say that there are few other insulation solutions that can save time and allow you to stick to project deadlines quite like spray foam. It offers true speed and e ciency, with most new build homes being insulated in a single day. In comparison to premanufactured insulation which can take several days or even weeks, to install. If you’re embarking on a new construction project, the benefits of spray foam really do speak for themselves, so why not give ThermoFoam a call? Cornwall Hospice Care has launched into the world of podcasting to help bust myths about its work. ‘Two Old Choughs: A Tale of Two Hospices’ features staff members from Cornwall Hospice Care who will be tackling a range of subjects with the help of selected guests. On the new podcast, Presenter and Director of Clinical Services, Gina Starnes tells us: “It’s nerve wracking as I’ve never done anything like this before, but it’s also very exciting.” Podcast Producer, Jan Pallett, and Co-Host Tamsin Thomas, are both members of the charity’s PR and Communications team. “We hope to introduce listeners to many of the inspirational people we work with,” says Tamsin. “And we’re aiming to bust a lot of the myths around the specialist work we do.” The podcast is available on the charity’s website, as well as via popular platforms such as Spotify, Apple, Google, Stitcher and Tunein. Wadebridge based company, Spyrys Spas & Hot Tubs is responding to this demand, not just supplying hot tubs ideally suited to rental properties, but by working in partnership with letting agents to provide a hassle-free weekly valeting service to change water and keep them in tip-top condition. It’s a small practice that champions the personal approach. “We design our projects as if we were going to live in them,” says architect and owner, Antonio Sanchez. “We take care of our clients and enjoy working together with them to incorporate their ideas into our designs.” The practice has a focus on private residential projects, covering the concept design stage, the developed design stage (normally for planning applications), and the technical design stage for building regulations and construction drawings. A clear before a clean! Spring cleaning is something that people have been doing for generations, but that now has an o cial name and is promoted in many various forms during March. Wellness wanderings Lifestyle physician, Mark Crouse of LifestyleDoc, knows that exercising outdoors is one of the most uplifting things you can do, which is why he led his first health walk and talk in January. Despite the blustery wind and cloud, it was a very well attended event. The group walked three miles around Pendennis Head. “What was most satisfying was the friendship and support that naturally developed within a group of strangers out enjoying something

as simple as a coastal walk together,” says Mark. “If exercise was a drug it would be called a miracle cure because it has so many health benefits. It certainly made me feel better.” For more information email markcrouse31@gmail.com or visit www.lifestyledoc.co.uk

Eco-friendly cleaning from Innoscent Cleaning Cornwall’s leading eco-friendly cleaning company, Innoscent Cleaning, has become an expert in offering exemplary cleaning services to holiday lettings, domestic and commercial properties alike. Celebrate the beauty of spring with two stunning new collections by glass designer Jo Downs, each inspired by the shapes and colours of the season right here on the Cornish coast. e ecting this season’s burst of fresh leaf colour, Jo’s ‘Spring Leaves’ are a beautiful new collection of wall-mounted designs in a vibrant palette of emeralds and greens. Handcrafted in Jo’s six-piece ‘Drift’, thirteen piece ‘Windfall’ and fifteen piece ‘Cascade’ collections, they are simply wall mounted in whatever combination suits your living space, promising to bring a splash of colour into your home. Also new for spring 2020, Jo’s ‘Seascape’ collection of sculptural wave stands, art frames and wall-mounted panels is inspired by the rippling textures of spring waters, and comes in

MAIN Incredible views of the estuary and out to sea at Fowey Harbour Hotel

here’s an incredible array of luxurious accommodation in Cornwall. However, I’m a firm believer that luxury lies not only in the indulgent beauty of your hotel room, or your wonderfully unique holiday home; it also lies in the stunning locations that staying in these places allows you to access. Cornwall’s south coast is renowned for its fair weather, tranquil coves and world-class sailing waters. As far as visiting the south coast goes, the Roseland peninsula offers an unspoilt rural landscape with stunning gardens, mysterious creeks, pretty coastal villages, medieval castles and historic churches. The Nare Hotel (narehotel.co.uk) couldn’t be better positioned to enjoy the beauty of the Roseland peninsula. Recently awarded AA five star status, when discussing the hotel’s most impressive features, Marketing Manager Jamie Moore tells us: The are’s location is definitely its most impressive feature – situated in a secluded bay with stunning sea views and a beautiful sandy beach, it is a genuine sanctuary away from the madding crowds.” If you’re after a more lively atmosphere, Falmouth is a brilliant location from which to explore the delights of the area. The coastal town has an exceptional variety of bars and restaurants and is famed for having the third largest natural harbour in the world, with everything from navy ships to super yachts seeking respite from ocean crossings here. Overlooking Falmouth Bay, The Falmouth Hotel (falmouthhotel.co.uk) is just metres from the clear snorkelling waters and reef at Castle beach and with Gyllyngvase beach around the corner, the grand hotel is in a prime position to enjoy the delights of Falmouth.

If you prefer the sound of a secluded cottage, Forever Cornwall’s (forevercornwall. co.uk) property, Little Wood on the Helford is located on the opposite side of the Helford river to Falmouth and is the perfect base from which to explore the wild beauty of Cornwall’s Lizard peninsula. The property sleeps six and features tempting views through the trees with glimpses of the Helford river beyond. It’s also just a two minute stroll from the fabulous food, drink and atmosphere of the Shipwrights Arms by the river. (Read more on page 79)

Or, for a hotel stay on the Lizard peninsula, Housel Bay Hotel (houselbay.com) is perched on nature’s edge above the secluded and beautiful Housel Bay. When discussing the draws of the hotel, Marketing Manager Phoebe says: “When you arrive at Housel Bay, you are welcomed by peace and tranquillity. Our secluded location allows guests to completely relax and unwind. We are a place to take a pause, breathe in the fresh sea air, and to immerse yourself back with nature. Providing the perfect tranquil retreat from the rest of the world.” Land’s End, on Cornwall's other peninsula, is located on the west coast near Penzance and the Penwith Heritage coast. This is a beautiful corner of Cornwall to explore, steeped in myth and legend; Penzance overlooks Mount’s Bay and St Michael’s Mount, a breathtaking tidal island. Marazion affords some of the most exceptional views of Mount’s Bay and Forever Cornwall’s property, The View, does as its name

suggests and capitalises on the incredible panoramas. Sleeping 11, The View is perfect for two families or big groups, with six spacious bedrooms and two generous living areas to socialise in, plus unbeatable views across Mount’s Bay to St Michael’s Mount. One guest has said of their experience: “It had everything we needed to enjoy the holiday and enhance our experience. This is our third time in Cornwall and it’s by far the best place we have stayed in. I would highly recommend this house to anyone, the location is fantastic and the views are nothing short of incredible.” From Penzance it’s possible to get the Scillonian III ferry over to the Isles of Scilly where the glorious Karma St Martin’s resort awaits, providing the epitome of island luxury just a stone’s throw from the beach and a world apart from everyday life (karmagroup.com). One visitor says of their stay: “The resort sits unobtrusively just feet from the water’s edge – an unbeatable location from which to enjoy the native beauty of the Isles of Scilly.”

Sink into your very own hot tub after a day of exploring

Back on the mainland, St Just is located to the north of Penzance and allows you to access the wild-untamed beauty of the Penwith Heritage Coast. Helpful Holidays (helpfulholidays.co.uk) have some great properties here; one that caught my eye in particular is See Two Seas, a fabulous barn conversion situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that overlooks Cape Cornwall. “See Two Seas is more than just a home from home,” says one review. “It also brought a luxury and celebratory element to our stay. Lorna and Harvey have thought of everything! Robes, reusable coffee cups, wellies – every need is catered for. Its decor is further complemented by the idyllic location, allowing you to explore the coastal paths before a dip in the hot tub.”

Then you have St Ives, a destination hotspot for art, ocean and surf lovers. The Harbour Hotel Group has a gorgeous hotel located in prime position next to St Ives harbour; it also has hotels in Padstow and Fowey that capitalise on these exceptional coastal locations, all featuring stunning water views and sophisticated rooms. Regional Manager, Paula Dupuy, says of the St Ives hotel: “St Ives Harbour Hotel and Spa offers the idyllic Cornish seaside getaway. With jaw-dropping sea views, it’s just steps from Porthminster Beach, and a short stroll from postcard-perfect St Ives harbour. The restaurant, bar and terrace are perfect for enjoying a meal or drinks while soaking up the sea views. For those looking for something more rejuvenating, the ‘HarSpa’ offers a range of treatments to revive and restore.”

Another real feature of note is the full width, wraparound glazed balcony, where sunny afternoons can be spent gazing over the river to Fowey and watching the world on the water go by, perhaps with a bite to eat and a glass of your favourite tipple.

ABOVE Bonaire bed

BELOW Ashley Manor sofa

hristie’s Furniture has an extensive range of furniture styles and collections that can be tailored to any taste, there's something for everyone. Personally, I like a touch of Scandi-style. So, I decided to choose the pieces that would make up my dream home to show you just how easy it is. First of all, the living room. I like a big squashy sofa that I can spend hours curled up on with a good book after a day spent at the beach or walking along the stunning South West Coast Path. Sticking to the Scandi-style, a light sofa that complements a deep wooden oor would suit me perfectly. With that being said, my sofa of choice would be the Ashley Manor sofa with a knit-effect rug strewn below. The bedroom would continue the wooden theme with a Bonaire bed and fur rugs filling the room, curating the all-important element of ‘hygge’. The chunky wooden bedframe is a favourite feature of mine, it calls to mind scenes from a forest hideaway and would be the ideal space to relax at the end of a long day exploring Cornwall.

The Canterbury collection kitchen diner is the perfect addition to the kitchen, combining the light tones of the living room sofa to the wood effect in the bedroom and creating a synergy between each space. This goes for all the collections at Christie’s; there’s always a way to link your interior design from one room to the next. The final touch would be a Cotswold ce, bringing the whole collection together and creating a beautiful and seamless finish. The other selection of furniture that catches my eye is the Mila collection. This brings a more modern edge. The living room is full of blue and grey that reminds me of the varying tones of the ocean. Add to this the Metro electric reclining sofa, a fashionable coffee table and a beautiful bookcase with wooden detailing and you have a match made in heaven. Finally, the bedroom is fitted with light wooden furniture and a matching bed frame, which I particularly like thanks to its lack of footboard. This gives an immediate feeling of spaciousness within the room.

SURROUND YOURSELF

with nature We discover how conservatories can help bring you closer to nature, throughout the year.

W

hen thinking about investing in a conservatory, one of the biggest factors that swings the balance for discerning buyers is the prospect of additional space. But what else does investing in a conservatory mean? Conservatories provide a room that’s ooded with natural light, which can be utilised as a brilliant study or social space for you and your family to enjoy. What’s more, as they are often built within a property’s garden, a conservatory allows you to spend more time surrounded by nature, effectively transforming your garden into a year-round space that you can enjoy even when relaxing indoors. Oh, and did we mention that it will add value to your home should you make the decision to sell in the future? The benefits are endless! The advancements in glass technology in recent years means that conservatories don’t suffer from extremes of temperature like they did in the past. So, if you’re concerned about your conservatory getting too hot in the summer or being cold in the winter, don’t be. Philip Whear has been crafting bespoke timber and uPVC conservatories in Cornwall for over 30 years, and have expert design

consultants on hand to guide you through the process. Their conservatories are made to the highest standards and as well as providing additional living space to enjoy, they can make a really stylish addition to your home. We hear from technical director Keran who tells us: “Whether you have a clear vision of what it is you want, or you need some input from our designers, we will design something that not only meets your needs but gives your property an added touch of class.” So, if you want to make the most of your garden throughout the year and incorporate a beautifully manufactured conservatory into your home, be sure to get in touch with the Philip Whear team. Better still, head to the showroom in Redruth and see the stunning designs for yourself!

Mid Cornwall Landscaping reveals five ways to reduce your carbon footprint through gardening.  RIGHT Help reduce your carbon footprint through your garden

H

ave you ever thought about how we contribute to our own carbon footprint? The obvious spring to mind, such as driving to the shops or dropping the kids off at school, ying off on a family holiday or even the products we buy at shops. But did you realise that how you garden can also have an impact on the environment? Here are some more ways you can make a difference: Reduce fertilizer usage Reducing or replacing nitrogen fertiliser is the simplest way to decrease your garden's carbon footprint. This is because synthetic fertilizers are energy intensive to manufacture. Mid Cornwall Landscaping suggest you use organic fertilizer instead, and use it sparingly. Ideally twice per year, once in summer and again in late autumn. Overusing any fertilizer releases nitrogen into the atmosphere as nitrous oxide, which results in 300 times more warming potential than CO2. Re-think your garden tools Another practical change that can be made is to reduce and/or avoid using petrol powered equipment to maintain a garden. Instead, use battery powered or human powered tools like the traditional push lawn mowers, rakes and hand shears. Or, leave your garden to grow and encourage wild owers to ourish! Turn your garden into a carbon sponge As plants die and decompose, much of their carbon becomes part of the soil’s organic matter, depositing carbon there instead of releasing it in the atmosphere as CO2, thus turning gardens into natural sponges that soak up and store carbon dioxide and preventing it from being released into

the atmosphere. Not tilling as much helps promote this and is a great way of growing plants and vegetables year to year without disturbing the soil. Reduce water consumption This one is a no brainer! And you might save fortunes in the process. The use of rainwater harvesting is the best solution here. Compost food scraps and garden trimmings Composting can keep materials such as food scraps and garden waste from taking up space in landfills, where they mix with other waste and release methane, a heat trapping gas that is roughly 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. The fundamental rule of thumb should be to recycle everything from the garden back to the garden. Compost is essential, not just for recycling, but for giving back organic matter to the soil. For expert help and design advice on your garden project, be sure to give Mid Cornwall Landscaping a call.

evolutionise how your home is powered in 2020. That’s the message Cornwall’s renewable specialists, GreenGenUK, are giving their customers. For too long homes and homeowners in Cornwall have suffered higher bills and unfriendlier fuels, but with the new decade comes new possibilities. Mr and Mrs R, recent GreenGen customers, talk us through their journey into renewables. “Our oil boiler was a few years old and we were fed up with it. It worked but it was absolutely the right time to look at alternatives,” Mrs R tells us. “We felt it was our responsibility to look at better, cleaner ways to heat and power our home. GreenGenUK seemed the sensible people to talk to about our options. They specialise in renewables and gave us an overview of all systems available, then proceeded to take us from the design stage through to the complete installation.” GreenGen proposed a combination of air source, solar PV and storage as a complete solution to the couple’s energy needs, minimizing carbon emissions and running costs. “An air source heat pump was 100% the right solution for us. We’ll be saving over 4 tonnes of carbon a year, we no longer needed our ugly tank and our home is now kept at a constant, comfortable temperature,” Mr R tells us. “Furthermore,

the Renewable Heat Incentive subsidises carbon friendly heating. Now we’re registered we’ll earn £1,400-a-year for seven years. Our bills should also be cheaper!” In addition to the heat pump, the home’s solar system provides the property with free, renewable power throughout the day. Their battery storage allows them to harness more of their free power, even throughout the night. “It’s nice to know we’ve done our bit and that we’re as carbon friendly as we can be,” Mrs R explains. “Some days, our electricity, heating and hot water is 100% renewable.” GreenGenUK covers Cornwall and Devon, offering free consultations and proposal to all customers. Get in touch with them today to find more cost effective, energy e cient ways to heat and power your home.

ornwall draws hundreds of visitors every year, our stunning coastline and laid-back lifestyle is dreamed about by many. So, if you’ve recently made the bold leap and invested in a holiday home or second home here, then congratulations! But what happens if you walk into your property and notice that the ooring needs an update? If you don’t have the time to organise it yourself you can always enlist the help of South West Carpets, who provide a awless service from start to finish. The team will send you free samples and help you choose the perfect style of ooring to suit you and your home. This means that wherever you happen to be, you can initiate the process and by the time you’re back in the south west, you’ll have a brand new oor to enjoy. This includes measuring your property and giving advice on the best ooring free of charge, so you can be sure it’s the investment you want to make, before ultimately fitting your preferred ooring once you’ve reached a decision. Alongside carpeting, the most popular type of ooring seen in holiday homes tends to be luxury vinyl tiles. With gorgeous designs

and patterns, this is the cheaper alternative to real tiles or wood ooring, allowing you to appreciate the luxury and beauty of your oor, without the escalated price tag, which is especially useful if this is an additional investment for you. When it comes to whether your oor will be in safe hands, the fitting team has over 100 years’ combined experience, so you know you can rely on them for a seamless service. But don’t take our word for it; we've found this review from one happy customer, who says: “Just want to thank you all for the fantastic service and a special thanks to the fitter who did a fabulous job, cannot recommend South West Carpets enough.” There you have it; outh West Carpets provide an all-round service whether you’re in county or not. he venue is booked, the cake is on order. The bridesmaids have been chosen and even the thank you gifts are taken care of. You’ve thought of every last detail. But have you given any thought to how you want to look and feel on your big day? All too often, brides leave planning their own personal wedding preparation to the last minute. Added to this, the stress of a wedding can sometimes leave us looking worn-out when we really want to look glowing and rested. So, what to do? We catch up with Dr Stolte at his doctor-led aesthetic clinic in Truro, MEDfacials, to see what he recommends to help brides look and feel their very best.

Good skin from within Think about feeding your skin with what it needs from the inside out. Drinking plenty of water and eating foods high in anti-oxidants, for example, can help it look clear and healthy. If you feel you could do with an additional top-up from within, then why not consider trying a three-month course of Skinade? Available to buy from MEDfacials in Truro, Skinade contains multiple active ingredients such as hydrolysed collagen, vitamin C, vitamin B12, omega 3, omega 6 and many more beneďŹ cial properties to promote optimal skin function.

CL--96--MedFacials--1.00.indd 2

13/02/2020 12:54

Treat your skin Dr Stolte recommends a course of peels or facials in the run-up to your wedding. MEDfacials offer a range of treatments with zero downtime (so no red, angry or aky skin concerns) that promote the production of collagen and elastin and nourish the skin with a range of scientifically proven, botanical ingredients. The signature Fire & Ice facial or Glow peel is a favourite with celebrities who know the benefits that regular facial treatments can deliver in terms of tighter, brighter skin and a glowing complexion, free from blemishes. Tackle your niggles head on If you suffer from blemishes, uneven skin tone, rosacea, active acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, or have noticed fine lines and wrinkles, you can rest assured that there are ways to treat these issues safely and effectively. Dr Stolte offers a free no-obligation consultation at MEDfacials, where you can happily chat through which treatments might be right for your skin needs. You can even split your payments, interest free. Pamper your body too MEDfacials also offers a range of noninvasive treatments for the body. The Aqualyx and ProMax Lipo treatments are both fantastic for tackling stubborn pockets of fat that won’t shift through diet and exercise and the IPL laser machine is perfect for rejuvenating and tightening the skin as well as being an effective form of permanent hair removal. The team also works closely with a body and fitness coach to help boost your overall health and body confidence.

Spend time on yourself Whatever you do, try to plan well ahead of the big day. It’s important to avoid trialling aesthetic procedures for the first time too close to your wedding as you may not be happy with the results. If you are wishing to try fillers or anti wrinkle injections, for example, and want to ensure you have optimal results, then you should ideally allow four to six months before your wedding. However, Dr Stolte’s most important advice is to always ensure you go to a medical practitioner you trust, and to do your research on their background, to make sure you’re confident they will be using the safest and best products available to leave you with the look you want. If you would like to find out more about any of the services discussed, or would like to book in for a no-obligation consultation with Dr Stolte and his team at MEDfacials, make sure to get in touch today.

YOUR WORD IS YOUR BOND

The most important aspect of your Wedding Day is the ceremony. The vows or promises made on your special day will form the foundation of your marriage, so why repeat words from a prescribed script? Let me guide you to create a ceremony that is unique to you as a couple. Unlike a registry office or church marriage, a celebrant-led wedding may be held anywhere, and can incorporate any content you require. Your ceremony will be as creative and romantic as you wish. Perhaps you have a favourite place - a field, a beach, woods, a cave, or even aboard a boat? Let your imagination run wild.

To date, Wild Tipi’s biggest event (a wedding on the listed lawns of Dartington Hall) saw seven tipis linked together, creating a truly awe-inspiring space for 280 people seated, complete with a dance oor, orchestra pit and chill-out area.

A SENSATIONAL

SETTING

On the cliffs of the north Cornish coast, overlooking the Atlantic and surrounded by Cornish countryside, you’ll find Chypraze Wedding Barn.

B

uilt in 1895, this restored milking barn lies in the middle of a working farm, where the family team rear Hereford beef cattle and Saddleback pigs for their home-produced sausages, steaks and burgers – a real treat for your wedding feast! It’s also only a short walk down the ‘bridal’ path from Portheras Cove – a real hidden gem and the perfect locale for those all-important photos. The main barn is licensed for ceremonies and civil partnerships, seating 100 guests and taking up to 200 in the evening. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something more intimate, the Snug seats between two and twenty guests – perfect for a Cornish elopement. Pets are welcome too, and have even on occasion been ringbearers! It’s tough to beat a Cornish summer wedding, one where the kids can play games outside whilst the adults mingle in celebration, which is why Chypraze opens its secluded lawn for weddings during the warmer months. This can also accommodate a good-size marquee, and is the ideal spot for a s’mores bar, sweet trolley, even a ceilidh. The barn also boasts a licensed bar, which is fully stocked with a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, including a full range of local gins and ciders. At Chypraze, the team work closely with couples towards a greener, more sustainable future. A wind turbine and solar panels

provide most of the power on site, for instance, and the meat used for the team’s Gourmet Grills (which are perfect for a summer wedding!) comes straight from the farm, eliminating both nautical and road miles. All other food is sourced from local producers, and by 2025, Chypraze hopes to source all food and drink from the local area and thereby minimise its carbon footprint. As you might expect, this is something that couples have been thrilled to be a part of, having even helped minimise food wastage by giving untouched, leftover food to a local charity that works with the homeless. There are plenty of reasons to tie the knot at Chypraze, not least of which are the close connections the team has with the abundance of nearby campsites, hotels, bed and breakfasts and self-catering stays. In short, Chypraze is committed to making your wedding unique, one that neither you nor your guests are likely to ever forget.

F

or lovers and guests celebrating a happy ever after, the Rod and Line – a 16th century inn nestling in the tiny village of Tideford – provides an idyllic venue for pre or post-wedding celebrations. It’s an exquisite place to stay too, having a wealth of secret boutique rooms, separate from the pub itself, all of which are beautifully decorated. Some have gorgeous feature baths; all boast luxury linen and Cornish organic toiletries. Inside the inn, you’ll find a uintessential ‘old world’ bar with an unrivalled atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot for sharing wedding stories over a glass of wine or ale, before tasting some of the Rod and Line’s famous, locally sourced and freshly prepared food. For those of you who’ve planned a winter wedding, you can relax in front of the crackling open fire; in the summer, sip champagne in the sun with your loved ones on the inn’s south-facing patio. In addition to all of this, the Rod and Line also boasts a standalone five bedroom town house, complete with its own garden and patio. This is perfect for friends celebrating your nuptials, and the best part is that it’s dog friendly!

Situated just a ten-minute drive from the beguilingly beautiful south coast of Cornwall, and in close proximity to the grand romantic estates of Pentilly, Boconnoc and St Germans, the Rod and Line is also well placed for easy access to the A38, which makes day trips around Cornwall’s innumerable attractions a simple matter of hopping in the car. In short, it’s the perfect base for both pre and post-wedding celebrations, but be warned: in a county where it is impossible not to lose your heart, you may well find yourselves celebrating more than one happy ever after.

WILDLIFE

A weekend on Scilly reveals a thriving wildlife population, many unique breeds and a haven of untouched beauty.

WORDS BY ANDY FORSTER

T

he Isles of Scilly is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), over half of which is looked after by local charity, the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust. For me, the easiest way to travel to the Isles of Scilly is on the Skybus from Land’s End, taking only 15 minutes and running year round; it’s a brilliantly convenient way to travel. Upon arrival I head to Tregarthen’s Hotel, located on St Mary’s island; the hotel is situated right by the water’s edge, just yards from the quay where day boats gather ready to head off exploring the islands. It’s evening when I arrive so I head to the hotel restaurant and enjoy the catch of the day fish and chips as I admire the spectacular views across St Mary’s Harbour and out to sea. Known for its exceptional food and wonderful location, Tregarthen’s Hotel is a great base from which to explore the stunning archipelago.

ABOVE Darren Hart, Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust Education Ranger  RIGHT Nationally important colonies of European Shag breed across the archipelago

The next day I wake up to an unseasonably warm October morning and head to Porthcressa beach, St Mary’s. I meet with Darren Hart, the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust’s Education anger, to find out more about the Trust and its work. Our wildlife tour of St Mary’s is to take in Peninnis, Old Town Bay and the Lower Moors. As we walk and talk it becomes immediately apparent that Darren is passionate about both his job and Scilly. He tells me that beach-cleaning events across the islands have removed a staggering three tonnes of marine debris in 2019 alone, which is good news for the island’s thriving seal population. The Isles of Scilly AONB has many designations, including one of the highest available – a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) – due to its nationally important population of seals. The Atlantic Grey Seal, is amongst the rarest seals in the world and the islands boast one of the largest breeding colonies in the south west. It’s not just the marine life that falls under the responsibility of the Trust; it has also taken on a significant land management programme that has seen more than 40,000 metres of paths being cut annually to allow better access across the islands. Darren also tells me that over five hectares of heathland and wetland have been cleared of invasive plant species to allow wild owers to thrive. As we reach the Lower Moors, which is a Site of Special cientific Interest ( I), I also discover that a second year of hydrological monitoring has been completed here which will ensure that

biodiversity is protected and enhanced and sustainable water quality targets are achieved for the future. As a charity, the Trust relies on grants, donations, membership and legacies to carry out its essential work – a donation to the Trust ensures the protection of Scilly’s wild places for generations to come. Elsewhere on Scilly, wild bird communities are thriving, not least the islands’ annually returning breeding colony of Manx shearwaters. To end my first day’s foray, I join Vickie Heaney, the Trust’s resident seabird ecologist for a ‘chick check’ on Penninis Head. A staggering 43 chicks have already been identified, all in t Agnes where the eabird Recovery Programme has done wonders for the bird population, by controlling the rat numbers. Vickie tells me that there are no chicks yet on St Mary’s, but that there are breeding pairs, so we are hopeful that we might be successful with our evening’s search.

EVENING DINING I can wholeheartedly recommend the lobster night at Longstone Cafe, providing delicious fresh food in an amazing location (www. longstonecafe.co.uk).

Vickie plays a recording of a Manx shearwater’s call, and I’m delighted to hear that there is a response from a chick. However, despite searching under stones, as the shearwaters are burrow nesting birds, our hunt for chicks sadly doesn’t come to fruition that evening. But on my return to the mainland I hear some great news from Vickie: “I wanted to update you on the chick we heard out at Peninnis. I'm just back from checking on it this evening. It was dark and foggy and when I got there at 9pm the chick was already sitting outside the burrow entrance – it was still really uite uffy (adult feathers all there, but still a lot of down left around its head and shoulders). It shu ed back in and I sat for a little while outside. I think it has another week or two before it heads off to Brazil and I will go out again to see if I can get a recording of its 'teenager' squeaky call!”

The next morning dawns bright and fine and I make my way eagerly to the quay to join a St Mary’s Boatman’s Association wildlife trip to the Eastern Isles. There’s nothing quite like the sights and sounds of St Mary’s quayside. The Scillonian III occupies her prominent berth, while happy holidaymakers board the off-island boats ready for a day’s excursion. The Eastern Isles are a group of eight islands that can be found to the south-east of St Martin’s. They are not only home to one of the largest breeding colonies of Atlantic grey seals, but also provide a habitat for eight breeding seabird species including the shags and pu ns. The water is calm and the sun high and our trip feels like something of a mini cruise. Cormorants and seals abound, all enjoying a spot of sunbathing on the rocks. We are out on the water for an hour and half, which goes in a ash as there is so much to see. Although, sadly, the elusive pu n is precisely that.

As a Dive Master, my final underwater exploration of the weekend is much anticipated. In the company of Anna from cilly eal norkelling I get the chance to look beneath the waters of the astern Isles. And it’s a whole other, ethereally beautiful world. The sandy shallows teem with fish, shrimps and crabs all set against the pristine white sand that cilly is famous for. We’re not under the water for more than a few minutes before an Atlantic grey seal glides into view. Her grey body glistens as the sunshine penetrates the surface from above, set against the stunning brown kelp forests beneath. As she turns towards me her giant black eyes are like jet pools. In a magical moment, a smaller male swims up to her and as I watch in awe, they appear to cuddle and kiss. either are afraid of our presence and are happy to swim with us for most of the time we are in the water. There couldn’t have been a more fitting end to my wildlife adventure on cilly and it certainly won’t be long before I’m back!

M

arking the completion of another phase in The Headland Hotel’s ambitious programme of development – which last year celebrated 40 years under the ownership of John and Carolyn Armstrong – is an all-new, multi-million-pound leisure experience, called ‘The Aqua Club’. The goal of The Headland’s development programme is to create a five star destination, attracting visitors to this luxurious hotel and its award-winning self-catering cottages, and The Aqua Club is the embodiment of that vision. It’s due for completion late in the spring and let us tell you, it looks incredible! “The Aqua Club will take The Headland into the next decade and beyond, providing the luxury experience that this destination has become well-known for,” explains hotel owner, Mr Armstrong. Indeed, comprising a 25-metre pool – one of five in total – as well as an adjoining hydrotherapy pool and children’s pool for Headland guests and members – the new facilities will also incorporate a sun terrace with impressive ocean views. utside, a heated infinity pool and hot tub will enable guests to immerse themselves in beautiful surroundings and relax as they soak up the stunning Atlantic views.

A further vitality pool, sheltered al fresco dining and sunbathing area will provide a place to release the stresses and strains of everyday life. Finishing it all off – situated between the indoor and outdoor areas – will be The Deck, a new café and bistro-styled restaurant where guests and members can come just for a bite to eat or to recharge after a session in the pool. The overall result is set to be staggering, so if you’ve been looking for a stay or spa experience that redefines the meaning of luxury, don’t miss the spring unveiling of The Headland Hotel’s brand new Aqua Club.

SMALL

l u f i t u a is be Forever Cornwall takes a very personal approach to holiday cottage letting.

C

DISCOVER MORE Forever Cornwall represents a personally curated collection of unique coastal retreats, always welcoming new enquiries and happily taking the time to discuss your needs without obligation.

ornwall has once again been named ‘Best UK Holiday County’ at the British Travel Awards, a well-deserved reputation that’s led to more holiday cottages and therefore more letting agencies than ever. A quick search online will display a myriad of big agency brands, as well as Airbnb and other ‘DIY’ letting options. There are old familiar names as well as big national ‘corporates’, with recent years seeing a feeding-frenzy of behemoth mega-agencies buying up regional ones. As an owner, this can put you in quite a quandary – how do you choose the right agency? We discuss why a smaller agency might be the best choice for you and your holiday property. Firstly, smaller means more personal. This is far more than a ‘nice to have’ – it makes sound business sense. Customers, quite rightly, expect to be treated as individuals. And this is particularly true at the high end of the market, where guests value talking to customer service staff who genuinely know cottages and locations, and who will also remember them from previous visits. This leads to stronger customer satisfaction, better brand loyalty and more repeat bookings. Personal is better for owners too – no one wants to be ‘a number’, and a smaller agency can usually be more exible in meeting owners’ needs too. A small agency will never forget that you and your property matter.

A second good reason is to help your MAIN property stand out. Think of a supermarket Even the biggest – great for the shopper who wants a bargain, holiday homes can but less so for a unique or niche product benefit from that will struggle to stand out in a crowd. A smaller boutique agencies small agency is more like a boutique shop; individual properties can each have a place ABOVE in the shop window, and customers expect to Could your holiday pay a little more. let benefit from a more personalised Last but not least, smaller local agencies service? give more back to Cornish communities, because with no corporate shareholders, more income is re-spent locally, in exactly the same way as buying local foodie produce. We know that the vast majority of holiday home owners care passionately about the communities they are part of, with a growing number of them seeking an ethical approach to letting that really does give something back. So, if you are investing in a holiday property, or already have one but are reconsidering your options, consider thinking smaller – it may just be smarter.

A STAND-OUT SERVICE Savvy owners of exceptional properties throughout the UK are now deciding to market them independently.

BELOW ACT Independent can help show your property at its very best

T

he only way to properly stand out in a crowded market is to focus on the uniqueness of your holiday rental and the experience you offer, doing it justice by showcasing your property to its very best. After all, if your property is indeed exceptional, surely it deserves its own marketing! The holiday rental market is now more competitive than ever; if you don’t want to be lost in a crowd of thousands of other holiday providers, the ACT Independent team has been working with independent owners since 2014, providing a customised marketing service that’s designed to focus purely on you. Jenny Olds, who manages Trewidden House and Garden for the Bolitho Estates in west Cornwall, tells us: “Following a decision to leave an agency and market the property ourselves – in an effort to generate more bookings – we turned to ACT Independent to help us. Their team did everything from the very best professional photography, web design, booking set-up and more, to deliver a modern and custombuilt website that re ects the location and features of Trewidden House and Garden in beautiful detail.” Jenny informs us that ACT also support with marketing activity and provide excellent, ongoing technical

back-up for the Trewidden website. Thanks to ACT, she continues: “We no longer pay any agency commissions and have total freedom to generate the exposure that our property deserves.” The ACT Independent team – like the properties they work with – are unique. They only work with select property owners, providing the highest level of care and expertise to promote their valued properties. They support all aspects of marketing too, never taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach, and with some of the industry’s most experienced in this niche field – including founder Andrew Dalby; Head of Marketing, Jo Blaylock; Head of Web Design, Robert Camp; Photographer, Marcin Chojnacki; Booking and Analysis expert, Kerry Scott; and Accounts Director, Ursula George – ACT Independent is dedicated to supporting premier clients in the market. In short, if your property deserves a better kind of marketing, to help it stand out in a crowded market, ACT Independent is the obvious choice.

Cousin Jack’s – the theatre company that brought you The Mousehole Cat stage show – comes to Penzance with Percy Pengelly and the Wibble Wobble!

T ABOVE & BELOW Illustrations from the original book, by Andy McPherson

his Easter, ‘wibble wobble’ your way through Percy Pengelly’s tall tale of ups and downs, based on the children’s book by Jenny Steele Scolding. Once the world’s most famous tightrope walker, this fantastic production – hosted in Percy’s morethan-marvellous Cornish big-top – follows Percy’s story as he searches for a new career in Cornwall. Witness his fall from fame to superduper pooper scooper, before reaching the giddy heights of a fishing port’s rooftops! This brand new, live-action production is high in energy, rich in laughs, and takes place in a beautifully re-imagined circus big-top on the lawn at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens near Penzance. It comes courtesy of Cousin Jack’s Theatre Company, who’re known for highquality family theatre designed to be enjoyed by all ages. “Family theatre really should be high-quality performances that can be enjoyed by absolutely everyone,” says Artistic Director, Guy Watson. “We believe that you are never too old or young to lose yourself in new and imaginative worlds! And don’t think for second that this is your average ‘hello boys and girls’ style of offering; the story of Percy Pengelly is specifically designed for the whole family to enjoy together – a chance for old and new friends to sit and share a heart-warming story.

Opening on 28th March, with shows taking place in the morning, afternoon and early evening, Tremenheere Kitchen will also be providing delicious pre-bookable food, to be enjoyed before or after the show. There will also be discounted entry to the sculpture gardens for anyone with a ticket, meaning you and your family can really make a day of it. For anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment, or who might be uncomfortable with loud noises or sudden lighting changes, there will also be relaxed, signed and captioned performances taking place, once again making this Cousin Jack’s production one that absolutely everybody can take part in. This exciting new production would make a fantastic addition to any Easter itinerary. To find out more about the show and to book your tickets, be sure to head online and visit the Cousin Jacks website.

CHARITY |

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL Newquay Zoo is Cornwall’s largest wildlife attraction, but did you know that it’s also a conservation charity working on projects around the world?

N

ABOVE Support Wild Planet Trust with a visit to Newquay Zoo RIGHT  The Sulawesi crested black macaque

ewquay Zoo is part of Wild Planet Trust, which also includes Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts at Torquay. Its conservation projects are split into five key areas Wild Coasts includes work at lapton Ley (a freshwater coastal lake), seagrass in Tor Bay, and marine plastics. Wild Forests features projects in Indonesia and Nigeria, as well as campaigning for sustainable palm oil. Wild Hills covers work in Tanzania and Zimbabwe, while Wild Futures includes programmes to save the Owston’s civet and the Critically Endangered Vietnamese pheasant. Wild at Home is the title for the Trust’s work in the , covering things like nature reserves and inspiring local people to encourage local wildlife. Two of the main projects in which Newquay Zoo is involved are based in Indonesia and Vietnam. elamatkan aki (‘ ave the ulawesi crested black maca ue’ in Indonesian) is based on the island of ulawesi, and champions the conservation of the ulawesi crested black maca ue – a truly charismatic primate. This is a busy, sociable monkey – as you can see by observing the troops at both Newquay Zoo and Paignton Zoo. The project team is also busy; there’s a lot that needs to be done, from opposing habitat loss and challenging hunting for bush-meat, to tackling wildlife tra cking and helping local people develop sustainable livelihoods. Another project that ew uay oo works closely with is ‘ ave Vietnam’s Wildlife’, a conservation partner that aims to raise awareness of the endangered civets and the threats they face from the people who share its habitat. In 2019, Newquay Zoo successfully bred a civet, which was great news; before then, no babies had been raised in zoos since 20 . In fact, there are only 25 recorded in captivity, and six of these are at Newquay Zoo. No one really knows how many there are left in the wild, but it’s safe to say there aren’t enough, which is why Newquay Zoo is leading international efforts to save this lovely south east Asian mammal – by trialling new management techniques, new husbandry methods and new diets to encourage breeding.

Newquay Zoo is a registered charity that relies on fundraising and guests in order to look after animals and carry out vital conservation work. To find out more, visit the website and social media, or better still, pencil a visit in your diary and release your inner animal!
