ow that spring is upon us, Cornwall is well and truly coming to life. Not only have the daffodils long-since begun to flower, the temperatures are also beginning to climb, and the waters that surround the Duchy are once again starting to take on the opalescent hues you might otherwise associate with those of far-flung tropical islands. Really, it s a beautiful time of the year to be in Cornwall! To help you make the most of it all – and to ensure your trip, which could well be your first since the pandemic began, is as memorable as possible this edition of Cornwall Living is brim-full of ideas of places to stay (from page 26), treats to try (46, 50) and activities to keep everybody entertained (49, 54). Not only that, if you’re among the many who’ve taken the decision after the last year of lockdowns to exchange your city life for one by the coast, from page 16 we take a look at some of the incredible Cornish properties listed by Rohrs & Rowe property agents. What’s more, for anybody who has recently purchased a property here, our home and interiors cover story (page 10) offers up some fantastic inspiration for making your house a home. If you own, or are thinking of buying a holiday let, then be sure to turn to page 36, where Cornish Cottage Holidays offer up their top tips to making the most of your investment. Add to all of this some superb, Cornwall inspired artwork from Jo Downs (25), how to make the most of your time with your furry friend in tow (52), plus an incredible array of prizes up for grabs in our current competitions (51), and this really is the ultimate guide for anybody hoping to spend time in the Duchy this spring... ...happy reading!

Is Cornwall the new London?

Stay in clifftop luxury

With more broadband capability and businesses realising the viability and economics of working from home, it seems it just might be. Not so long ago, some services that were only found ‘up country’ are now the norm and available in beautiful Cornwall. Shelly Moss of Kewniek, who worked in London for many years, now resides near Tintagel and believes that things are changing. efore we had fibre broadband to the premises, we relied on satellite broadband which made working from home di cult. There were times when my husband and I were taking it in turns to work!” “Bringing the concept of ‘professional organising and decluttering’ to Cornwall has been interesting. I remember going into an interior design shop in a town nearby and the owner and her daughter didn’t see any need for such a business around here. It reminds me of the scene

from Pretty Woman. Big mistake. Big. Huge!” Shelly believes that change will benefit the people of Cornwall. eing able to work for major companies remotely, provides wonderful opportunities for the younger people here”. So, if you are moving to Cornwall, Kewniek are here to help. When a client moves from London to Cornwall, Kewniek liaise closely with them and their removal company, and are on hand to unpack and organise on the day of arrival.

at Polurrian on the Lizard

With the Polurrian’s luxury self-catering villas booking fast, as they offer guests their own space plus the use of all the hotel’s facilities, Polurrian on the Lizard is delighted to re-open its hotel doors to welcome guests and day visitors on May 17th.

Members of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers, Kewniek will also travel to help the declutter beforehand, or indeed work with selected organisers in ondon to fulfil any task. nce the removal company have packed and arrived in Cornwall, Kewniek will be ready and waiting at your door. Bliss.

Situated on the stunning Lizard peninsula, the hotel sits in expansive lawned grounds with breathtaking Atlantic views, direct access to the South West Coast Path and its very own beach. Mealtimes are wonderfully relaxed; menus are simple yet inventive, influenced by the flavours of the Mediterranean and many cooked in a wood-fired ozney oven. or the perfect holiday experience, you can take a dip in the outdoor pool, enjoy some ‘you-time’ in the spa, explore the local area with a picnic or simply relax with an afternoon tea or a cocktail with a Cornish twist as the sun sets.

LEFT Cool and coastal

ur homes are something we should all be proud of. At least, in my opinion, they should be! This is particularly true in light of the many months we’ve all spent unable to venture far beyond those same four walls, and as national restrictions look set to slowly ease and our freedom restored to once more spend time with our nearest and dearest, I, at least, cannot wait to welcome friends and family into our humble abode for a long-overdue catch up. This is all very exciting, but having spent so much time at home over the last year, it’s highly likely that there are parts of our homes – perhaps entire rooms – that we’ve noticed could use some ‘TLC’. It could be the need for a new coat of paint in the hallway, some new furniture to replace old and abused seating in the living room, or for those who have ‘had it up to here’ with their tired and outdated interiors, it could be a complete home makeover. It needn’t necessarily be limited to the insides of our homes, either. The lockdown of March last year brought with it some incredible weather, which meant that we could at least enjoy some time outside, but just the same as with our interiors, the more time we spend in the garden, the more things we naturally notice that could do with just a little bit of love.

For these reasons, I’ve decided to take a long hard look at my own home and the things we ve decided to upgrade, fix, or out and out replace – to inspire some questions for two of Cornwall’s leading interior (and exterior) specialists, the answers to which, I hope, will help inspire you to get to work on your own home project. First, I speak to Ali Cary, owner and founder of Truro’s The Cotton Mills Design House. As inspiration for your own postlockdown interior makeover, Ali unveils a recent project that she and the team undertook for a client in their beautiful Cornish home. The client initially approached The Cotton Mills to help achieve an uncluttered interior. Without wanting to be shy in their use of colour, they nevertheless wished to keep the palette contemporary. In short, says Ali: "They didn’t want to complicate it by adding too much to the mix. "They understood that the open-plan living space meant they needed to be a bit bold and use a colour they liked, a colour which was strong enough for such a large area," continues Ali. "Their stunning charcoal grey velvet sofa needed some contrast, so we used some dark navy fabric to complement the room and perfectly offset the grey. The light-coloured floor was a great backdrop to the navy and white embroidered curtains, giving relief to the dark navy fabric and also picking up on the light floor tiles. Ali and The Cotton Mills also used a complementary colour for the snug – a warm golden yellow which, as Ali puts it, “naturally complemented the main open-plan area while still creating that ‘snug’ feeling.” As we move upstairs I learn that Ali’s clients decided to maintain the bedrooms’ coastal theme by using washed-out linens. This is an important point: often, it is not necessary to completely change the look of a room. In this case, Ali tells me that: "The guest bedrooms are opposite each other, and we came to the conclusion that

rather than change the style of the fabric, we would use the same design but in a different colour." Similarly, the main bedroom already had a gorgeous bluebell headboard, so Ali and the team built the room’s new scheme around it. "A border in a similar colour to the headboard was added to the curtains," Ali explains, "giving the room a seamless flow. The white shutters and a light-coloured love seat, meanwhile, give some contrast and texture to the scheme." This project is typical of those which Ali and The Cotton Mills team are regularly asked to help with. By employing a proven process that takes you from an initial plan ‘on paper’ all the way through to picking out your favourite colours, choosing whether to build on existing features, and finally settling on the perfect interior scheme, The Cotton Mills can help with every interior challenge. If you’re stuck for ideas, why not give them a call? Next, I speak to owie rooks of eart, Smoke & Soal, specialists in creative outdoor living. Now, I have to admit that outdoor cooking has, for a long time, been a great love of mine. Growing up, there was something about the ‘back to basics’ nature of a simple seaside barbeque with friends, that instilled in me a lifetime affection for food eaten al fresco. And as I’ve grown up, having been fortunate enough to buy a house with my partner here in Cornwall, this passion (or, depending on who you ask, obsession) has

evolved into a dream of one day installing my own outdoor kitchen. With that in mind, it was with great interest (and much salivation) that I first stumbled across the range of outdoor living products on offer through Heart, Smoke & Soal. Setting aside my own bias, I first ask owie about the benefits of outdoor cooking of ‘bringing the inside out’. During the current climate, she tells me that more and more have discovered the pleasures of cooking at home, and explains that she, herself, has been able to try out different recipes and dishes that she would usually only eat out in restaurants. What s more, says owie aving the time to cook something outside gives you that Hygge feeling.” ‘Hygge’ is a Scandinavian term that, in its simplest terms, refers to a state of wellbeing, and it’s one that can be applied anywhere – inside or out. “I think the past 12 months have brought our gardens to the forefront of our minds when it comes to what we can do at home,” says owie. Cooking outdoors doesn t have to be something for special occasions, or just the odd weekend; it is there to be enjoyed all year round, and we want to encourage people to get out there and cook something up. I think there is something about being out in the fresh air whilst eating, cooking and having a drink – having time to yourself to relax to just to enjoy where you are in the moment.” That, if you are still unsure, is Hygge! So, if you love to cook and want to combine your passion with time spent in your garden, where should you start? “This can vary,” explains owie. Some or our customers have tried different barbeques – maybe a smoker, a Tandoori oven, or a grill – and want to focus on putting this into long-term equipment in the form of a built-in kitchen feature. Others may not necessarily want an outdoor kitchen, instead opting for a bar, or perhaps a gazebo to cover their spa.” Interestingly though, as outdoor dining and the installation of outdoor kitchens begins to trend here in the UK – already being extremely popular in America and Europe

owie tells me that some equipment brands can actually add value to your home, explaining that “a barbeque kitchen may not be the obvious upgrade for a home, but it’s certainly a trend that is here to stay!” With a vast selection of equipment and accessories from world-leading brands, it’s clear that you ll find what you re looking for through companies like Heart, Smoke & Soal, but some – me included – may be wondering whether you need to have lots of outdoor space to work with. owie puts my mind at ease, explaining No, you don’t need a lot of space. It could be a veranda or a small patio; there are lots of different options, from built-in hardstanding kitchens, to modular units.” In fact, there is so much that can be done with the brands available to you that you’re sure to find a solution for your garden. As a top tip for those with smaller gardens (in answer to a question loaded with my own interests) owie suggests thinking about how many people you entertain and how often. “This will help you gauge what equipment you need for your outdoor space. Also, how do you like to cook? Some people prefer solid fuels, others prefer the convenience of gas. Some even prefer multiple appliances, so they may have a solid-fuel grill and a gas pizza oven, so different types of food can be cooked depending on mood and guests.” The short answer, is that there are no real ‘hard and fast’ rules. It’s entirely down to your answer to a very simple question: how do you want to use your garden? Much the same as when considering layouts and décor ideas for the interior of your home, with some careful thought and planning, and, of course, advice from the experts, realising your vision for your perfect outside space can actually be quite simple. To find out more about eart, Smoke & Soal, visit www.heartsmokesoal.co.uk. Whatever the nature of your home improvement, the most important thing is to have some fun with it. After all, our homes are there to be enjoyed, so whether you’re painting a single room, upgrading your furniture, or installing a brand new outdoor kitchen, it’s something you should certainly be excited about.

fter more than 100 issues of Cornwall Living, it has always been highly apparent to us that Cornwall is an incredibly entrepreneurial county and is therefore home to many inspiring brands and hard-working businesses. As a case in point, we need only look to a company we have followed with interest since its inception, Rohrs and Rowe Property Agents. The company is owned by its experienced Directors, Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe, who have recently announced that they have been named ‘The Best Estate Agency in Cornwall’ for the third time, by the highly prestigious International Property Awards. Their drive to offer something new, particularly in terms of marketing and service has clearly set them apart in the world of Cornish real estate. What’s really impressive about their latest award is, as Martyn explains: “These awards look at pretty much every element of what a good estate agency offers and so for this to have come in a year that, for so many reasons, has been like no other before, it is all the more special to us! We see it as recognition of the hard work and dedication that our excellent team have put in during an extremely di cult year. The International Property Awards focus on quality of service to clients, innovative marketing, design and originality. Each sector is scored by a group of over 80 independent industry expert judges, as well as feedback from clients of the company, and Rohrs and Rohrs were duly awarded the highest five-star levels overall. Matthew comments: "When it comes to selling prime property, the first thing most people will look at are an estate agent’s marketing capabilities, as this is a hugely important factor, but we also know from our 40 plus years’ experience, that it is your service, professionalism and sales results that help you stand out from the crowd. Come the end, these are what make a client’s experience highly satisfactory and memorable. “Our service begins long before the property is launched; we assess each property individually and then form a strategy of how to best market its most saleable assets, whether

that’s a focus on the location, its interior, exterior, or views. Each property is unique and therefore deserves a tailored approach. “We often say that an acceptance of an offer is just the start of our service; our years of experience help guide sales right through to completion. We are in constant communication with both sides, identifying any possible issues and tackling them before they manifest into something that could jeopardise the sale. Martyn builds on this, explaining: “We have found our approach to be extremely effective. We have had great success in selling properties that have been on the market previously and have not found a buyer. We assess why this is, comprise a new strategy and implement it from the start, always communicating with our client throughout. “We like to think of ourselves as a boutique agency – we carefully restrict the number of properties we have at any given time to ensure that we can personally provide the best service to our clients. Indeed, as Matthew rightly explains, it is one thing to promise service to lots of clients, but quite another to deliver on it! “Whilst the trophy properties we sell are the ones that grab headlines, the largest rise in demand we have experienced is for properties in the £500,000 to £900,000 region, reveals Martyn. ou only have to look at the number of television programmes featuring Cornwall at the moment to see how popular the county is, he concludes. “We expect that this demand for Cornwall will continue in 2021– we have had a record number of great, motivated buyers contacting us expressing their desire to find a Cornish property to fulfil their lifestyle aspirations. Rohrs and Rowe are in need of more properties across Cornwall to satisfy this continuous demand and so if you’re looking to sell your Cornish property but have yet to find the right agent, why not give Martyn and Matthew a call to see how they could help?

espite its proximity to the centre of Truro, Lynn Allen enjoys a wonderful sense of seclusion at the end of The Avenue – possibly one of the city’s most desirable addresses – thanks to generous grounds and beautiful mature gardens. There is also, outside, a conveniently positioned and spacious double garage, with ample space to store a boat. The garage comes with planning permission for the addition of accommodation over, however it could, with the correct permissions, offer alternative options such as an annex, consulting room or home o ce, depending on your needs. This in turn opens through to the sun room, which has wonderful views of the garden and glimpses of the iconic spires of Truro cathedral. There is also a snug, perfect either as a home o ce or a games room for the kids, as well as a south-facing dining room and well-appointed kitchen, which leads on one side to a useful utility area, currently set out as a home gym. pstairs you ll find a total of six bedrooms four can be found on the first floor, two of which include dressing rooms that could easily be transformed into en-suite facilities. The remaining two bedrooms occupy the second floor, serviced by a generous and well-appointed bathroom. Lynn Allen is a rarity in that, despite its proximity to the city centre, it still retains a genuine sense of space, offering ample room for a family to spread out. Add to this the potential of the aforementioned double garage, and it becomes even rarer! Put simply, for anybody hoping to truly enjoy everything that Cornwall has to offer, from its enigmatic coastlines to the cosmopolitan bustle of life in the city, a viewing of this stellar home comes highly recommended.

Bringing the family together through innovative and sustainable architecture and design.

pecialising in coastal properties in Cornwall, with a passion for architecture, interior design and property development, Watershedd offers all of these services in one comprehensive package. The team adopts a unique approach to design, one that’s at once collaborative and innovative, with the ultimate goal of creating simple yet beautiful homes that bring the family together. The company was born out of a love for the Cornish lifestyle. In fact, it is the county’s constantly changing, beautiful landscape, its rich culture, and the energy of the Atlantic coast, that directly informs Watershedd’s design process… which is good, as those are precisely the things that draw people to Cornwall! Established in 2018, Watershedd was founded by Marzouk Al-bader, Poppy Trevillion and Adam Casey, who, between them, wanted to bring a fresh approach to architecture and design to Cornwall’s coastal homes. “Every project and client is very

different, with a unique set of challenges,” explains Adam, “so it is important to us to tailor our services to suit each client and family.” With this in mind, Watershedd works with a team of local consultants and contractors, their goal being to simplify the building process whilst at the same time focusing on a design-led, collaborative approach between you and the team. The aim is to use natural, sustainable, locally sourced materials and traditional craftsmanship in each project that Watershedd undertakes. This is an ethos which has set the company in good stead – so much so, that Adam and co have since expanded across the UK, always adhering to the belief that carefully crafted, sustainable designs positively influence, and complement, the local landscape. Acting as both client and architect on a number of projects, Watershedd develops unique luxury homes to be sold on the open market. Unlike other developers, their approach is to offer one-off, design-led homes which maintain the same high level of quality

and detail across the board. Indeed, from imported Scandinavian flooring, to full-height glass sliding doors, it’s clear in each and every Watershedd home that no expense has been spared in delivering the utmost in sustainable and contemporary design. As an example, Adam shows us one of the team’s recent projects in Mawgan Porth – a home called ‘Dynargh’. Embedded in the rolling hillside overlooking the sands of Mawgan Porth, Dynargh is a private seaside retreat that’s been sensitively designed to embrace the natural contours of the land, and to maximise the views of the rugged Cornish coast. Built around the culture of Cornish coastal living, Dynargh is a classic example of Watershedd’s approach to design – one that really does bring the whole family together. The property shies away from white render, instead adopting a darker material palette. Black timber cladding, for example, wraps the timber cabins on the first floor, whilst natural Cornish drystone walling clads the ground floor living space. This separates Dynargh from other houses in the area, and serves as proof that a darker palette blends more sympathetically with the contours and colours of the wild local landscape. Spread across three floors, with only one internal staircase between the ground and first, the lower ground floor is deliberately disconnected from the main house to provide amenity space. This includes a cinema room, surfboard storage, showers, and even a guest suite. Cornwall is well known for its varying weather, and the design was intended to ‘force’ the owners outside and down the external steps to reach the lower ground floor, increasing their interaction with the landscape – ‘by design’. There is also an independent guest annexe on the first floor, which can only be accessed externally, providing the perfect accommodation for extended family and friends with a real feeling of self-containment.

Contemporary interiors blend modern detailing with cosy soft fabrics, embracing the fact that Cornwall’s weather isn’t always sunny. The resulting living space invites you to relax whatever the weather, with floor-to-ceiling windows allowing you to sit back and enjoy the show, whether a storm is raging or the sun is shining. In short, Dynargh is a shining example of Watershedd’s approach to design. With o ces in ondon and Cornwall, this sterling practice offers a novel approach to architectural and interior design, perfect whether you’re undertaking a new build, or refurbishing an existing property. With a small, experienced and dedicated team, Watershedd is able to maintain a personal and individual approach to each and every project, and when it comes to achieving your vision of your dream home by the sea, what more could you ask for?

ast year saw an exciting new addition to the high street of the leafy Berkshire village of Sunningdale – Jo Downs Handmade Glass. Although not the best year to launch a new gallery space, the initial response was amazing. Now, as we get back to some sense of normality, the Sunningdale Gallery team is ready to welcome back fans of Jo’s work and offer a real interactive experience. Anyone who loves Cornwall and its artistic heritage will be familiar with Jo Downs Handmade Glass galleries. The Sunningdale Gallery is brimming with beautiful giftware and interior art pieces, and is also the perfect place to drop in and discuss your commission ideas. Launching soon is a dedicated workshop space which will offer hands-on courses in fused glass design. You will be able to learn the basics through to more advanced techniques and create your own beautiful pieces of fused glass art. For more details, be sure to visit the website. Jo is inspired by the landscape and atmosphere that surrounds her and it’s not by chance that she lives and works in one of the UK’s most beautiful rural counties. Her home on the north coast of Cornwall has always provided inspiration for her stunning fused glass collections, and inevitably seasonal colour and the ever-changing landscape affect the tone and feel of the work she creates throughout the year.

The Sunningdale allery reflects this unique style with an array of stunning interior pieces and wall art. And if you are after something truly individual, the team at Sunningdale are there to help. “All my clients have a starting point, a notion of what they want,” says Jo. “It’s a dream, isn’t it, to work hard all your life for a beautiful home, and to fill it with beautiful things? Bespoke works are the ultimate expression of that I think. I am surrounded by such a stunning landscape, and people want to bring that beauty into their homes, and to celebrate it! If I can make that happen with my artwork, that’s a really rewarding thing.” If you love Cornwall and want to see Jo’s stunning work up close, you can explore her full collections at the exquisite new gallery and workshop space in Sunningdale

T

he Falmouth Hotel – known fondly as the ‘Grande Dame of Falmouth’ – has long held a sterling reputation for blending its castle-like Victorian grandeur with contemporary luxuries that cater to the demands of even the most modern guests. This renowned stamp of luxury hotel accommodation has, for decades, provided guests with the perfect base from which to explore Falmouth, and with the recent addition of luxury lodges on the hotel grounds – offering a choice of two or three bedrooms, with all the benefits and facilities that the hotel has to offer – not to mention the self-catering cottages and apartments, there are now more ways than ever to enjoy a break in this most sought-after of destinations. The hotel facilities include a spa, indoor pool and fully equipped gym, as well as fine and casual dining. There are also five acres of beautiful gardens to enjoy and explore. This is great for those who wish to escape the madding crowd and envelope themselves in the calming quietude of the hotel grounds, but being so close to Falmouth, it’s hard to resist the temptation to explore. efined over centuries by its proximity to the coast, Falmouth has much to offer those looking for the perfect coastal getaway. Across the water, St Mawes Castle is the sister to Pendennis, and for those who want to build a more complete picture of the history and stories that these iconic twins share, it’s a simple matter of hopping aboard the St Mawes Ferry. Nestled at the end of the Roseland peninsula, from St Mawes there are plenty of seaside walks for those who like to lace up their boots. In fact, there are few better ways to spend a sunny afternoon than a gentle stroll by the sea, perhaps with a picnic to hand and a bottle of something chilled. If you decide to venture into Falmouth town centre, you ll find that this bohemian hive of arts and culture, replete with independent boutiques, artisan shops, trendy bars and tempting eateries, is perfect for combining a spot of retail therapy with lunch by the water. You may choose to dine in at one of the town’s many hidden gems – some nestled right on the water’s edge – or you might instead opt to grab a pasty and go off in search of your own quiet spot. As an owner of your own luxury lodge, at Atlantic Coast Holiday Park, you’ll be in prime position to enjoy a lifetime of Cornish family holidays.

J

ust a short walk from the golden sands of Gwithian and Godrevy, surrounded by beautiful sand dunes, Atlantic Coast Holiday Park has been awarded the David Bellamy Gold Award for several consecutive years and the staff continue to build on this environmental diversity each year. At any time of year, this area of Cornwall is simply stunning, and visitors can enjoy the changing seasons and the benefits of the park s natural environment. Thanks to all of this, Atlantic Coast Holiday Park represents the perfect opportunity for anybody looking to invest in a holiday home here in Cornwall. Tens of thousands of people enjoy the freedom of leisure home ownership in Britain and at Atlantic Coast, your home will be yours to enjoy throughout the year whenever the park is open, for both short breaks and longer stays. There s no need to book ahead either, and all your home comforts will be ready and waiting, just the way you like them. So what can you expect from the lodges available at Atlantic Coast? Thanks to strong relationships with every major caravan manufacturer, Coastdale Parks – of which Atlantic Coast is a member – can supply any caravan with any specification, subject to the size and aesthetics of each individual pitch. This means that whether

you re simply in need of a place to hang your hat after a day spent exploring, or a luxury base with state-of-the-art fixtures, from hot tubs to home entertainment, you can relax in your Cornish home from home, as soon as you arrive. What s more, if you re thinking of sub-letting your lodge – another perk of ownership at Atlantic Coast – then the ability to tailor your accommodation to your guests needs is a real advantage. By doing so, you can encourage maximum bookings from potential guests, which means that even when you re not using it, you ll still be making the most of your investment. To put it quite simply, whether you re hoping to capitalise on Cornwall s growing staycation market with a lodge in one of the county s most highly coveted destinations, or are looking to invest in your family s future holidays, then the lodges and location that define Atlantic Coast Holiday Park come highly recommended.

It’s the perfect retreat, especially for those bringing their hound on holiday, as it lies close to a number of access points to the South West Coast Path. There are beaches nearby which your pooch will love exploring, as well as Bodmin Moor, which is a walker’s paradise! Kilminorth is also a superb all-round venue, be that for weddings, corporate events, or any other occasion you may be hoping to celebrate. CONSULT THE Are you thinking of buying a holiday home to let here in Cornwall? If so, now is the ideal time to do so!

C

ornish Cottage Holidays’ Property Manager, Janine Woods, shares her many years of knowledge about buying and letting holiday properties in Cornwall. “In recent years, Britain has enjoyed a staycation boom with more of us choosing to holiday in the UK rather than abroad,” she explains. “Buying a holiday home to let can be a fun and highly lucrative endeavour, but it is important to do your homework.” The obvious place to start is via a quick phone call with the experts at Cornish Cottage Holidays. “We have been managing and marketing holiday homes successfully in Cornwall for more than 50 years,” says Janine. “We have the experience and knowledge to advise you on buying a holiday let and maximising the return on your investment.” Things you can ask include what the best places are in which to buy a holiday home. “Aside from your personal preference,” says Janine, “a prime tourist location will ensure a high volume of bookings and a good return on investment.” She elaborates that generally, the best locations are coastal, preferably with a sea view, and within walking distance of a beach or the coast path. “However, let’s not forget areas of natural beauty, peaceful countryside and picturesque towns and villages, which offer a different appeal.

“Close proximity to good amenities is one of the most influential factors in a guests choice of holiday home. Situated within easy reach, or better still, walking distance of a pub, restaurant, shops and visitor attractions will boost a holiday property’s desirability and booking performance! Some up and coming areas to look out for include Looe, Porthleven, Falmouth, Praa Sands, Fowey and Sennen Cove, to name just a few.” The next question is what do holidaymakers want from a holiday home? Janine and co successfully let all types and styles, from character cottages to hypermodern apartments, and everything in between, including grand-country piles, rustic barns and luxury pads. “Ultimately,” explains Janine, “it all comes back to giving holidaymakers what they want.” Outside space is a top priority for a lot of potential guests, as is luxury, and in fact, Cornish Cottage Holidays’ luxury homes have seen a 39% growth in demand, meaning it can certainly be worthwhile budgeting to finish to a high spec. og burners or open fires are also highly sought after, especially among guests looking to make the most of the quieter seasons when the weather’s cooler. As Janine puts it, “a log burner is an excellent asset to attract winter booking, and will achieve 14% more income.”

Other features include good WiFi – a must for the modern guest – and added value, which could come in the form of a swimming pool, hot tub, or even an additional bathroom. Interestingly, Janine reveals that a property with a hot tub generates 54% more income than other similar properties in the same region! The size of the property you buy will depend on who your ideal guest is. Families, for instance, will be attracted to a four or five-bedroom property, however if you intend to cater to couples, a one or two-bedroom holiday home will suit them perfectly. And will yours be pet friendly? Before you decide, it s definitely worth noting that holiday homes that are, earn 11% more income than those who don’t accept pets… Finally, you need to do your sums! “It’s a good idea to speak with us to establish what the potential income might be from your investment,” says Janine. “If you require financing to buy your holiday home, you will face increasingly stringent affordability criteria from mortgage lenders. They will often require a letter from a reputable holiday letting agent to confirm the anticipated gross weekly rental for the low, mid and high seasons.” Fortunately, Cornish Cottage Holidays is a recognised source for lenders and can provide a letter including an annual projected income to support your application. For more information, and for expert advice on how you might make the most of your Cornish holiday let, be sure to give the team a call!

ESCAPE TO THE LIZARD Discover mainland UK’s most southerly point – the perfect way to escape the rush of the city. ABOVE Parc Brawse House, an elegant residence with all the comforts of home 

H

ead out of London as far west as you can drive — then go south as far as you can go, and there you will discover the Lizard. This is mainland Britain’s most southerly spot. A unique landscape stretching deep into the Atlantic, surrounded by the sea on three sides, it has its own micro-climate and very much its own way of life. And on the far side of the farthest village you will find Parc rawse ouse. What a surprise! No cute fisherman s cottage this, but rather a stunningly elegant residence, with all you need to escape the city without compromising comfort. Sleeping up to ten in style, this five bedroom holiday home is brilliantly situated between Lizard village and Lizard Point, so you can explore footpaths and miles of coastal path, and the iconic local beaches, just moments away. The house dates back to the late 1700s when the original part was a local fisherman s cottage. About years later the rest of the house was built, giving it a stunning façade and breathtaking sea views on three sides through windows facing south, east and west. Parc rawse ouse is arranged across two levels; the old and ‘new’ parts of the house are joined seamlessly, with access between them from both the kitchen and dining room. Sleeping arrangements are across both parts of the house with three bedrooms (sleeping six) in one part and two (sleeping four) in the other. Both parts are amply serviced with

bathrooms (some en-suite) and storage, and the kitchen and dining facilities are easy to access from both sides, making this an ideal property for two families to share. You have bags of parking and can also bring one friendly dog. Why not stretch your legs and walk to Kynanace Cove, famed for its turquoise waters, sandy cove and brilliant café? Swim, fish or enjoy a cream tea, or get lucky and spot a rare Cornish chough. Alternatively, get the adrenaline flowing by going surfing at ennack Sands or with Poldhu Surf School, or book (in advance) with the brilliant Lizard Adventure. You’ll find a little rock climbing or coasteering is a great way to work up an appetite! After your day’s adventure, retreat to Parc Brawse, where friends and family await… cook up a storm of fresh lobster from the nearby Cadgwith Cove, kick back in the garden, snuggle down for a binge-watch and if you’re very lucky, you may hear the lighthouse sounding on a stormy night! You really could spend a week here and venture no more than a few miles away, in one of the most remote, yet amazingly rich and diverse locations in the UK.

We purposely do not have a gin menu , says Neil, who, along with Jan and the team, prefers to establish the type of gin you like, be that traditional, dry, fruity or spicy. We will then offer you a taster (with an appropriate mixer, of course) and once you’re happy, serve your choice perfectly, in a proper glass, and with the correct garnish.” We apply the same philosophy to the Cornish rum, vodka, brandy, liqueurs, beers and ciders that we stock too,” continues Neil,

DID YOU KNOW? If spirits aren’t your bag, The Little Gin Shack also serves Atlantic Brewery’s Fistral Pilsner, alongside a range of conditioned ales, as well as soft drinks.

and it certainly seems that their approach is being noticed; the Little Gin Shack was recently included in the top 10 Independent Shops review conducted by Reach, as well as an award conducted by mystery shoppers and based on TripAdvisor reviews. Not a team to rest on their laurels, Neil, Lee and co have recently added yet another string to their bow, now offering a full bar service. This allows you to come in and relax into the next phase of your day, whether it’s a gin before lunch, or an aperitif before dinner at one of Wadebridge s superb restaurants. Even if you re looking for a venue to spend a relaxing evening out, then as Neil tells us We are your destination! We couldn t agree more, and if you re in Wadebridge and find yourself with a thirst, we can’t think of anywhere better to quench it than at The Little Gin Shack.

TAKE A TOUR

Cornwall is, of course, a wonderful place to visit. But have you ever considered taking a private guided tour for a true Cornish experience?

A

fter working in the Duchy’s hospitality and tourism industry for more than 20 years, Louise West had a dream to set up her very own tour guide business. Drawing on her local knowledge and love for her county, ‘Experience Cornwall Tours’ was created to share, with visitors, Cornwall’s unique combination of beauty, heritage, culture and hospitality. “When I visit somewhere new, I want to really experience the place, meet its people, discover its secrets, find the most scenic spots off the main tourist routes, and eat the local cuisine,” explains Louise. “So on all my tours, I offer guests just that. Not just a scenic tour, but a true Cornish experience.” On a tour with Louise, not only will you visit must-see attractions and hidden gems, but you will also have the opportunity to walk a stretch of the South West Coast Path, which is renowned as being one of the most spectacular coastal trails in the country. You’ll also explore Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, of which Cornwall has 12, delve into Cornwall’s mining heritage which has UNESCO status, and enjoy a traditional Cornish cream tea picnic to top off the whole experience.

A guided tour means that Louise and the team take care of all the driving, and if you have been lucky enough to visit Cornwall before, you will know that our narrow, high, dry stone walled lanes can be challenging to navigate. Not only will you have a safe outing while being driven by a certified advanced driver, you can even be collected from your Cornish accommodation’s front door, which, of course, means no designated driver! You are on holiday after all, and there are plenty of award-winning beverages to enjoy with your lunch, which Experience Cornwall Tours can also make recommendations for. Put simply, with Louise’s friendly demeanour, professional attitude and expert local knowledge, a tour with Experience Cornwall Tours promises to be the highlight of your holiday.

W

hen most would be considering retirement, Cliff and Liz West, who enjoyed most of their working life as dairy farmers on the banks of the River Tamar, decided to try their hand at making their favourite spiced rum liqueur. What began as a hobby, and after many long hours of research and development, the Silver Award-winning Toffee Apple (Rum) Liqueur, was born and has remained a customers’ favourite ever since. Monarch Liqueurs is nestled in the tranquil Tamar Valley, and its now comprehensive range of rum, gin, whisky, vodka and brandy-based liqueurs are produced in small batches and easily recognised under their Tamar Tipple banner, complete with an iconic logo of nearby Druxton Bridge. Every unique recipe liqueur is presented in a bottle that has been washed, dried, filled, capped, ribboned and labelled by hand in Cornwall, resulting in beautiful, keep-sake bottles look every bit as good as the contents taste. This dynamic duo’s passion for developing new and exclusive flavours, with the finest ingredients sourced locally wherever possible, means that there is something for every palette across the

range. Cornish Black Bee Honey is used to flavour the oney and Spice Rum Liqueur, while the addition of Cornish Sea Salt adds depth to the Salted Caramel Rum Liqueur. Over the years, recipes have been tweaked to reduce sugar content in line with modern tastes and only fresh spring water is used in the mixing process. No less than six of the liqueurs have received coveted Taste of the West awards and with new additions to the Tamar Tipple range including Peach Brandy and Apple Brandy Liqueur, there are bound to be more to come. The liqueurs themselves are smooth enough to enjoy on their own, and are also delicious when added to a coffee or hot chocolate for a decadent treat. With online ordering and bespoke gift boxes available, you can enjoy a tasty tipple from Cornwall, wherever you are!
