Open until 16th September, a new exhibition at Penlee House Gallery & Museum in Penzance celebrates the life and work of Dame Laura Knight, one of Britain’s most popular twentieth century artists. The exhibition is called Laura Knight: A Celebration and brings together around 60 paintings produced during her almost 80 year long career. Highlights of the show include drawings that she made as a student at Nottingham School of Art, her early paintings in Yorkshire and Holland and her beautiful Cornish landscapes. They include the pictured painting ‘Sennen Cove’ (circa 1911, reproduced with permission of The Estate of Dame Laura Knight DBA RA 2021). Her captivating portraits of ballet dancers and performers are shown together with some of her most well-known works such as her Second World War commissions. Her record of the Nuremberg Trials – The Dock, Nuremberg – is on display until the end of July. For more information call 01736 363625 or visit www.penleehouse.org.uk

think we can all agree that as the country looks forward to a time when things might return to normal, nothing sounds quite as inviting as time spent out in Cornwall’s great outdoors. Indeed, from walking our favourite stretch of the South West Coast Path to surfing, from wa eboarding to freefalling, what better to way awa en our senses Outdoor adventures provide us with a wide range of physical and mental benefits, too. Outdoor physical activity boosts our endorphins and helps to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, whilst, at the same time, increasing our self-esteem and self confidence. With all of that in mind, and to help get you in the spirit of adventure, we brea down just a selection of the activities you could be enjoying this summer in Cornwall, and where better to start than metres high, above the biomes of the Eden roject, on England’s longest and fastest ipwire ased on the Eden site, Hangloose Adventure hanglooseadventure.com offers thrill seekers no fewer than six ways in which to get the blood pumping. With extensive Covid measures in place, Hangloose Adventure offers visitors a safe, fun, and truly memorable day out the ind we could all use after the year we’ve been through From one extreme to the other, if you’d rather remain close to ground level, exploring Cornwall on two wheels is another great way to enjoy our county’s great outdoors. The Camel Trail near adstow and Wadebridge is the obvious place to start, offering a family friendly cycle alongside the Camel Estuary, with delicious foodie options at either end. Lesser known trails include the Coast to Coast’ trail running, as you might expect, from the north to the south coast, starting at Portreath to the north and finishing at evoran to the south. The main trail runs for miles, through Scorrier Woods, the Poldice Valley and alongside the stunning Restronguet Cree , ma ing it a superb choice for those hoping to soa up the best of Cornwall’s coast and countryside. The trail is almost entirely purpose made for cyclists, but does include some country lanes. Another popular choice and one which you’ll also find on the Cornwall Trails website cornwalltrails.net is the reat lat Lode. This circular route of around seven miles includes some challenging terrain, but it does ta e you through some of Cornwall’s most iconic ‘mining country’. Named after a two-mile long ‘lode’ of tin ore that was discovered in the area during the s, this trail is perfect for cyclists who are fascinated by Cornwall’s relatively recent industrial heritage. assing by the remains of the engine houses, time spent here transports you bac to a time when the area would have been abu with the sounds of industry.

ituated in the most idyllic rural position, Harmony Cottage is an absolutely stunning residence inside and out. The property has been fully renovated and finished to an exceptional standard throughout, combining its quintessential period charm with sympathetic contemporary interiors to epitomise the Cornish cottage idyll. In the kitchen, for instance, an Esse range cooker takes centre stage, combining with agstone oors, bespo e units and a large Belfast sink. The ‘cottage’ vibe continues as you enter the sitting room, where beamed ceilings and a woodburner make the generous space feel immediately cosy. Heading upstairs and you’ll find two lovely bedrooms with gorgeous wooden oors and exposed beams, as well as a show-stopping contemporary family shower room. There is also the former forge – now an annexe – which provides additional accommodation for guests, as well as offering the potential for lettings. Finished to the same exacting standards as the main house, it includes a very attractive kitchenette/utility room, a spacious bedroom and another stunning shower room, ensuring that whoever you have coming to stay, they’ll be able to do so in the utmost comfort.

Add to all of this surprisingly spacious gardens to the rear, including a west-facing patio that’s perfect for barbeques, two further terraces with a mixture of mature trees and shrubs, plus a useful shed to one side complete with its own power supply, and for anybody contemplating a life in the countryside, Harmony Cottage represents the ultimate in Cornish cottage living.

HOME

BUILDING TRUST Quality, efficiency and expertise in construction; this is the ethos that underpins the work of Scribe SW.

A

s Cornwall’s popularity continues to grow, particularly in light of the pandemic which has left many seeking more space and a chance to escape to the slowed down pace of life by the sea, many are choosing to purchase second homes here in the Duchy. And as more of us seek to make the most of our time within the confines of our homes be that inside or out ensuring those spaces live up to our lifestyle needs is now more important than ever. This is where Scribe SW excel. It could be that you're bulding a home from the ground up, or are undertaking a full renovation, in which case Scribe SW brings a personalised approach to each and every job, focusing on quality and craftsmanship to ensure the finished result lives precisely up to your vision. Alternatively, it might be that you’re hoping to make the most of your outside space. If so, Scribe’s bespoke garden buildings can really make good use of it, and with experience building summer houses, log cabins, and even outside bars in fabulous settings, the team understands how much difference a garden building can make to your home. Buildings like these can make a great hub for garden-get-togethers, or a relaxing retreat for some rest and recuperation after a busy week.

Whatever your project looks like, when you enlist the expertise of Scribe, you can rest assured that everything the team does, is done with sustainability in mind. With many companies offering similar services to Scribe, consumers are often kept in the dark as to the sustainability (or lack thereof) of the materials used on their project. “At Scribe,” says business owner, Michael, “we don’t think that this is an excuse to make ill advised, irresponsible and careless decisions, especially when the opportunity exists to ma e a significant positive impact to our environment, both globally and locally.” In short, the Scribe team bring quality, e ciency, reliability, experience and innovation to each and every project they are a part of. Whether it’s a garden building, a renovation, or a brand-new property, for anybody contemplating buying, building, or renovating a home here in Cornwall, Michael and the Scribe SW team come highly recommended.

hoosing Cornwall for your holidays closer to home needn’t be a compromise when you own a boutique barn at Retallack Resort and Spa; particularly when you invest in a four-bedroom, roof terrace lodge complete with a sunken hot tub and views that take in the tranquil lakes and lush countryside setting. With two layouts available to choose from, the four-bedroom lodges centre around a luxurious, open-plan living and dining area with earthy combinations of timber wood panelling, blended with natural carpets and soft furnishings. The calming design aesthetic fuses the interior with the breathtaking scenery outside. Sliding or bi-fold doors allow you to open out your living space to the natural surroundings with a wrap-around deck, serving not just your living area but some of the bedrooms too. So, you can start your day with an al fresco coffee accompanied by birdsong. There is plenty of opportunity to make the most of the outdoors together with an extensive roof top space which combines an outdoor corner sofa to sink into with a pre-dinner cocktail, a large dining table for convivial mealtimes, plenty of space for

loungers and sun-baking as well as a raised hot tub area for twilight soaks. This is the ideal spot for a chill-out or a party; a space that will wow your guests. If you can drag yourself away from your beautiful accommodation, you’ll have plenty to do on resort, from a gentle stroll around the grounds or a day of pampering in the spa, to an adrenaline filled day of water sports and surf simulator action. Whatever your pace, this five star resort can match it. A newly refurbished bar and eatery with a wood fired pi a oven and Costa coffee will help you start and finish your day, without a care or a chore in the world! Nearby you can take in the holiday hotspots of Padstow or Newquay, enjoy a decadent meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant, while away an afternoon tasting local wines or discover the laid-back surf culture for which the county is well known.

NOW IS THE TIME… We learn from cottages.com why now is the right time to holiday let in Cornwall.

I

f you’re weighing up your investment options then now could be the perfect time to consider buying a holiday let in Cornwall. Staycations have never been more popular with the holidaying British public, and continuing uncertainty over foreign travel means demand for selfcatering accommodation has rocketed in the county over the last year, with no signs of slowing down. That’s why property owners who work with cottages.com – one of the UK’s top providers of holiday properties and luxury homes – are already looking forward to a bumper 2021. Digging a little deeper, it seems that occupancy rates for the owners of established properties currently marketed by cottages.com in Cornwall, are up by an average of 27% for the year (at the time of writing) compared with the same point in 2019 – itself a record year, with income up by a whopping 47%! And while it’s no surprise that the summer looks certain to sell out, it’s the projections for later in the year and into 2022 that highlight the enduring appeal of a quick, convenient and safe Cornish break for millions of holiday makers every year. It seems this is a trend that’s here to stay for many years to come. In fact, bookings for Cornwall in October are already up by 175% compared to the

same point last year, while bookings for next year are up an incredible 181%, compared to last year’s projections at the same time for 2020. This, says Sherilee Jordan, Regional Sales Director at cottages.com, underlines the opportunity Cornwall presents for prospective holiday let owners. These figures just go to show the potential for great returns both now and in the future as more and more people get used to taking their holidays closer to home post-pandemic and enjoying what’s on offer on their doorstep,” she says, adding: “Many of our properties are booking out for 45 weeks of the year, but you have to know what you’re doing to get the best bang for your buck. That’s why we do everything we can to support our new owners, hold their hand through the process and help them make the right decisions to get the most from their asset.” Sherilee’s Cornish-based cottages.com team also includes Robbie Saunders, Simon Jones and Sarah Ward. Between the four of them they have 30 years of travel industry experience and can help new owners every step of the way with their holiday letting journey. All are on hand to offer information and guidance face to face, over the phone, or via video call, but here are some key things to take into consideration before taking the plunge and buying your Cornish holiday let.

Luxury sells The more luxurious you can make your property, the better. Top-notch properties are more likely to sell out and will encourage year-round bookings. Think quality furnishings, coffee makers, hot tubs and woodburners – special touches people may not have at home. This can earn you 10% more bookings and 70% more revenue compared to non-luxury properties. Hot tubs A hot tub is an investment worth making because properties with hot tubs on average achieve 40% more bookings and 85% more revenue than properties without. Make it pet friendly We’re a nation of animal lovers, so if you’re interested in maximising bookings consider attracting those who want to go away with their dogs. Pet-friendly properties generate 18% more bookings and 18% more revenue on average than non-pet-friendly ones. Ta benefits Before you buy your property make sure you see expert advice from a financial adviser to understand the tax breaks you might be eligible for. For example, many owners can claim capital gains tax relief if their property is classed as a furnished holiday let. Pick a reputable partner Teaming up with a reputable booking agency will minimise the pressure on you to find bookings and save you time. They can help you manage your bookings and marketing, and advise on the best pricing strategy, while also dealing with customer queries.

The genuine on-the-ground presence cottages.com offers owners in Cornwall was recently bolstered with the appointment of Paul Evans as its new Vice President of Portfolio. The Bude-based father of two has more than 20 years’ experience working in the south west holiday industry and has joined the company to ensure property owners remain at the heart of decisions and service development in the cottages.com business. Paul's experience adds additional insight and local knowledge to an already strong local team working with owners in the region. With more than 19,000 properties across the UK, cottages.com is part of Awaze – Europe’s leading managed vacation rentals and holiday resorts business. It’s also worth remembering the team work with the very best cleaners and caretakers across Cornwall, so can put you in touch with reliable professionals to take care of changeovers and maintenance on any property you decide to let. To find out more about letting with cottages.com, whether you own a property already or are considering investing, be sure to call Sherilee and the team here in Cornwall for more information.

Lace up your walking boots and explore the peninsula's vast green landscape and dramatic clifftops. After a good day's hiking, what better than to snuggle up in front of the fire and ta e a breath with nature? If you’re lucky enough to stay at Housel Bay during a storm you’ll be treated to some epic wave watching as the Atlantic breakers pound the cliffs below. OCEAN s e r u t n e adv View the Cornish coast as you’ve never seen it before, from a tailor-made private charter.

L  ABOVE Explore the stunning waterways of the south coast

INSET Depending on conditions, you can even take the helm!

aunched in 2019, August Rock Adventures takes thrill seekers, ocean adventurers and nature lovers out across Cornwall’s stunning waters. Your trip will be on the seven metre Rigid n atable Boat (RIB), Harbinger, powered by a Mercury Verado Supercharged 200HP outboard engine, reaching exhilarating top speeds of 35 knots (about 40 mph) and with a range of 150 miles. This range allows trips of two hours or more, meaning guests get to reach some excellent, out-of-the-way snorkelling and swimming spots. The boat is hired for exclusive use by your family or group of up to six people and we can think of nothing better than being skippered across one of Cornwall’s stunning bays before anchoring off the beach for a sunbathe and then a swim ashore for a cooling ice cream or a decadent cream tea. Harbinger takes guests on tailor-made trips along Cornwall’s south coast. As each trip is bespoke to the booking, you can choose where you would like to go – weather permitting of course. Favourites include exploring the coves and beaches around the Lizard peninsula or searching for seals, dolphins, and minke whales. And in spring, you may be lucky enough to encounter a basking shark up to 20 miles offshore. Trips start from Helford Passage on the Helford River, from where it’s only a short cruise to explore Falmouth harbour and the surrounding bays.

There really is no better way to enjoy Cornwall than from a boat. You can leave all of your cares behind, as well as your car and the crowds, and enjoy the peace and beauty of the Cornish coast from a different angle. Who knows, if the conditions are suitable then you could even try your hand at being the captain, driving the RIB in the tranquil waters of Falmouth Bay or the Helford River. August Rock Adventures operates the only Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) licenced RIB along the south west Cornish coast that is dedicated solely to single group adventures. With conservation, and the safe interaction with wildlife of extreme importance to the team, they are proud to be an accredited member of WiSe, the UK's national training scheme for minimising disturbance to marine wildlife. What are you waiting for, hop aboard!

NURTURE BY NATURE

Over the course of the pandemic, not only has Kernow Adventure Park’s Aquapark expanded, so too have its outdoor facilities.

D

espite the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, Kernow Adventure Park have nevertheless adapted. Working hard over the winter season, the team have been busy laying turf, concreting, and prepping for the season ahead, creating new outdoor areas for spectators, and picnic spots for participants to enjoy after their session. They have also increased the size of the Aquapark, which is now bigger and better than ever before! Putting risks into consideration, Alex and co have now built a beach-like effect for customers to walk in and out of the water, instead of using a dock. This is for the customers who aren’t as confident to jump in, allowing them to get used to the temperature of the water. “Our approach to outdoor adventure has changed,” explains Alex, “we love to see people of all ages and abilities, enjoying all that we have to offer at the adventure park. We have adapted and grown to make a fully accessible and nurturing adventure environment. We want you to feel reconnected with nature and awaken your adventurous side.” The beautiful surroundings of the quarry, the feeling of being cocooned and sheltered by the vast granite walls, the tranquil and calm waters and the plethora of birds to listen to makes it an almost impossible place to leave, for your next adventure in Kernow. “Our mission has been to create an enjoyable and safe space. With the help of my incredible team and managers, Izzy and Will, we nurture the timid and encourage

the brave. Here at Kernow Adventure Park we have adapted to this different lifestyle, and have created new rules and restrictions for people to still enjoy themselves. We’ve put in place a rule of six on the Aquapark, and made sure everyone is sticking to social distancing measures. With these new rules,” says Alex, “our customers have felt safe, but also enjoy themselves!” Activities here can be enjoyed from the age of six. These include paddle boarding, jumping into the water off the Aquapark, riding the wakeboard across the quarry or feeling the adrenaline on the Ringo. And for those wanting something a little more relaxing, the team is excited to be re-introducing Open Water Swimming and coaching sessions this year. At Kernow Adventure park, the team works hard to make sure customers understand the rules, so everyone can enjoy the activities. On arrival, you feel welcomed and relaxed, due in part to the beautiful landscape, but also the approachability of the team. And when the day comes to an end, Alex explains: “Customers always leave with a smile on their face.” Along with his team, Alex is looking forward to seeing you at the park, getting you in the water and hearing your laughter bouncing of the walls of this idyllic hideaway, in the heart of Cornwall.

t was in a laboratory at General Electric in the s that the first man made diamond was created. orn from a small diamond seed’, these first diamonds were not grown for gemstones but as functional diamonds for industrial, computational, health care, and scientific applications. Consisting of carbon atoms, they display similar chemical and the same optical characteristics as a natural diamonds and are graded in the same way, but it has only been in relatively recent years that engineered diamonds have become viable for fine jewellery. t was an appreciation of fine jewellery that was the catalyst for Elaine Reffell’s relationship with lab made diamonds. Elaine was given a pair of earrings as a birthday present, but these differed to her other jewellery in the fact that the diamonds in them weren’t mined, but created in a laboratory. Elaine explains t didn’t matter to me that they weren’t mined diamonds. couldn’t tell the difference, they were every bit as beautiful and meaningful and was fascinated with how they had been made. Elaine’s aim was to source beautiful lab made diamonds that came without the con ict and the associated price tag. everal

BRIGHT years of research and travel led Elaine to find a supplier who was producing diamonds in a laboratory that were every bit as beautiful and strong as their mined counterparts. he set up her earth friendly diamond business, Ethica iamonds, in and has been able to combine ethical good practise with excellent customer service. Even most lab grown diamonds have an associated carbon footprint and emissions and the pricing of these stones is fixed against the mined diamond mar et, which she believes is unethical. With all this in mind, Elaine is proud to only wor with laboratories who share her ethos. Ethica iamonds is currently the only supplier in the south west of pure, lab grown diamonds from the iamond oundry the world’s first certified, ero carbon footprint producer of diamonds where production is hydropower, meaning ero emissions. Elaine tells us We wor closely with our suppliers and are pleased to say that we re the only business of this ind in the U . We are able to bring people an ethical diamond at a time when everyone is loo ing deeply into the origins of what we purchase. Nothing that has been dug

up from the ground can ever be free from environmental impact to the seabed, wildlife or climate. Our belief is that if something is given from the heart, symbolising a special time such as an engagement, the birth of a child, an anniversary or a wedding, its production should not be associated with any humanitarian environmental harm or suffering. Ethica iamonds has its home in Truro a beautiful, welcoming showroom where customers can come, by appointment, to choose their piece of jewellery. There is the option to select from a catalogue of designs, or Elaine and her team are happy to ta e customers through the bespo e process. They will help couples to design their own ring, which is then lovingly made by their own very talented jeweller who lives nearby. n eeping with the ethos of the business, the metals used, be it gold or platinum, are predominantly recycled. Customers are able to select every element of their diamond, from the cut, to the shape and the si e. f a bespo e ring has been chosen, then s etches will be done and silver or wax samples made up so that they can see the proportions and get a good idea of a sense of scale.

Elaine explains We often find that people have seen something they li e at Tiffany, eaverbroo s or oodles and want to recreate it using an ethically made diamond. any of our customers have a science bac ground and, having researched the product, have discovered that there is an ethical alternative to purchasing a mined diamond, that also saves them money. Each appointment ta es around two hours, which shows the love and care that everyone at Ethica puts into their wor . Elaine’s daughter Emily has now joined the family business, becoming a valuable part of team. The reason why we do what we do is all about the customer experience and their journey it is such a lovely time to be involved with a couple who have recently become engaged, says Emily.

lickers Doghouse on Padstow’s North Quay offers a plethora of eco-friendly and sustainable products to get your canine companions summer-ready. From cooling coats and lifejackets, to slings strollers, shampoos, doggie ice-creams and even private fitting sessions, your pooch will never feel so pampered. What’s more, if you don’t live in Cornwall you can still access this fantastic canine range online and have it delivered direct to your door! Slings Using a sling is a great way to evenly distribute the weight of your dog, making it easier than ever to carry them. Whether you use it for public transport, to keep young pups by your side, or to help older dogs keep up on those long summer walks, a sling can be used all day, relieving tension in your neck, back, shoulders and arms. All slings are manufactured in the UK, supporting British businesses.

Waterproof slings These are inspired by Slicker’s original dog slings, but come with added features and a waterproof fabric to keep your dog warm and dry in the rainy weather. After listening to customer requests, the slings now have a handy pocket on the strap for your phone for easy access. They also include a rain cover for your little one to hide under if they're having 40 winks or just need to take shelter from the rain. An incorporated eyelet strap allows you to secure the cover down, or alternatively keep it loose depending on your pup's needs. Finally, for added security an adjustable clip restraint has been incorporated to keep your dog secure, as well as D-Rings on the inside and the outside of the sling in order to attach accessories such as treat bags. Strollers lic ers has spent a long time finding seriously good quality strollers to join their offering. They chose Innopet for so many

They come in six different styles to ensure the perfect size and model for all requirements Ice cream This year, due to popular demand, Slickers has invested in an ice cream production kitchen developed especially for your beloved fur babies. They use local, freerange Cornish raw goats’ milk which is fantastically healthy for doggies, and live Cornish yogurt to promote good gut health. Other nutritional ingredients include banana, honey and organic peanut butter. Shampoos and colognes We love to keep it British and so do the team at Slickers! All their shampoos are manufactured here in the UK and are supermild, made using essential oils that nourish the skin and coats of our best friends leaving, them smelling fresh and beautiful for days. Not only that, they are also concentrated so they last much longer and the containers are all recyclable, making them much more eco-friendly.

Slickers Shields For the last four years Slickers has been repeatedly asked for chew-proof leads. However, they didn’t want to compromise the quality of the leads simply because puppies like to chew, so they decided to produce lead shields that are non-toxic – safe if your dog does try to chew, and allowing you to keep the uninhibited comfort and functionality of your chosen lead. rivate fittings Everyone at Slickers loves dogs and for this reason all staff are fully trained to provide a personal fitting service, free of charge, on all products. After all, you can have the best product, but if it doesn’t fit properly it can be very uncomfortable and even dangerous for your pet. So, next time you visit Slickers make sure you bring your dog with you – they will also get a yummy treat or two!

C

arnglaze Caverns is a family run business with much for everybody to enjoy. The caverns can be found amongst 6.5 acres of ancient oak woodland in the steep-sided Loveny Valley, on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor. Initially, there was an open-cast quarry on the site, but some 300 years ago the miners started to go underground too, resulting in the formation of three hand-dug caverns of cathedral proportions. During a tour here you will go about 150 metres into the hillside and below ground. rom the first chamber, which is fully accessible, there is a ight of steps down to the other two chambers. In the lower chambers you will find the underground la e with its crystal clear, blue-green water. The caverns are at a constant 10°C underground, so a jumper and sensible footwear are recommended! Carngla e is also home to five recorded species of bat, some of whom sleep and hibernate in the unlit areas, and whilst it is a wonderful sight to behold them, visitors are as ed to switch off any ash settings on cameras and phones, so they are not disturbed. Delving deeper into the history of this site, we learn that during the Second World War, the Royal Navy used the first chamber to store its supply of rum for its base at

DID YOU KNOW?

Devonport in Plymouth. Local folklore has it that you could smell the rum at the junction with the A38 – about a mile away! In December 2002, the chamber was converted into an auditorium with seating for 400. Fast forward to now, and the slate walls and roof form a stunning backdrop for events of all kinds. A truly unique performance venue, due to the shape and height of the cavern, the acoustics are simply astounding, and in fact the venue has been acclaimed by many of the local and international artists who have performed here. With a fully licensed bar open on concert nights, and a catering unit in the gardens serving snack food at most events, be sure to keep an eye out for 2021 concert dates.
