espite the consistent lengthening of Cornwall’s shoulder seasons, it’s still surprising how few people see it as a winter destination. For the life of me, I can’t understand why! onstructed early in the 19th century, Hendra is a beautiful former farmhouse located in the picturesque parish of St Kew, near to Cornwall’s north coast and the bustling market town of Wadebridge. Hendra has recently been renovated to an extremely high standard, providing the ideal combination of modernity coupled with the traditional beauty of a listed building. As well as having excellent family sized accommodation, it also offers considerable fle ibility as it provides the current owners with a good income from two holiday letting elements – a detached two bedroom holiday cottage (Little Hendra) located within the grounds as well as a spacious annexe (Pippins), which can be configured as a self contained anne e or incorporated back into the main house layout, without changing the structure of the house. The heart of the home at Hendra has got to be the gorgeous farmhouse kitchen with an adjoining dining room, creating an open space perfect for entertaining and enjoying time together as a family. Outside, the garden catches the afternoon and evening sunshine and has an attractive lawn, bordered by a gravelled pathway and raised beds. There’s also a sizeable grass paddock, a large parking area in front of the detached double garage and modern outbuilding that is currently used as a gym. The stunning layout and mesmerising location of this property has got to be seen to be believed and we highly recommend organising a viewing to fully appreciate what Hendra has to offer.

The feature room of the property, however, is the reception room, with its floor to ceiling wraparound glazing and four sets of patio doors, which look out over Falmouth harbour and out across the bay. The room is visually divided into two areas by a feature back to back fireplace, with the main sitting room area taking up approximately two thirds of the floor area. The final third makes up the dining space, flowing through to the kitchen via double doors, which can be opened up to create a more sociable, open plan layout. In all there are three bedrooms, all of a generous size, with the master bedroom and main guest bedroom boasting en suites.

ach enjoys a southerly facing, floor to ceiling door and window, thus benefitting from stunning water views, with access to the wraparound balcony. Falmouth itself is a bustling seaside town, renowned for its eclectic selection of trendy cafés, bars and restaurants that draw on the area’s rich foodie provenance. It’s also known for its boutique High Street, a fabulous alternative to the national and global brands found in Truro, and perfect for finding those one off items, be it as a gift or a treat unto yourself. Simply put, 2 Admirals Quay represents an incredible opportunity to buy into one of the Duchy’s most popular and, indeed, beautiful seaside towns, one that’s unlike anything else on the Cornish market.

But they’re not, they’re located in Hayle on Cornwall’s north coast – situated just metres from the stunning stretch of sand of Gwithian and Godrevy that spans into the distance for over two miles. There are so many different lodges to choose from, each with their own special draw. Take Finisterre, for example, where contemporary Scandinavian design meets laid-back luxury. Finisterre has all you need for a fabulous holiday in Cornwall. Three boutique bedrooms and three modern bathrooms offer superior comfort for couples, families or group holidays. Then there’s Fitzroy, with its large openplan spaces and luxurious furnishings. Sink into the sumptuous sofas after a hard day walking the coast or lying on the beach, before cooking up a storm in the contemporary kitchen that has everything you need to fuel your crew. The wooden veranda hugs the entire front of the lodge, with the hot tub perfectly placed in the corner and an outside dining table providing the ideal opportunity for al fresco dining. Portland has everything you need for a memorable holiday: prepare a feast in the sleek kitchen then wander through to the beautiful, relaxed living and dining areas with cosy log burners for cosy evenings in.

limb the stairs and you ll find a high-spec contemporary bathroom, plus two beautifully styled en-suite bedrooms – each with super king-sized beds and luxurious linen. There’s no way we can select a favourite from the range of lodges at Sandy Acres, and this is but a taste of what’s on offer. There are a further seven lodges to choose from, each as beautifully designed as the next. So, when considering your next holiday, make sure to check out Sandy Acres, for an unforgettable and indulgent experience right next to the coast.

MADE EASY

Cornish Traditional Cottages provide their top tips for holiday home letting in Cornwall.

July and August there’s plenty of room for all of them, if you’re looking to maximise your return and attract holiday makers outside of high season it’s a different matter,” George explains. “One way to make your property more appealing is to keep your colour palette neutral to create a sense of cleanliness and space, it’s then possible to add some vibrant touches of colour through throws and cushions.” olidaymakers also appreciate fle ibility in a holiday cottage so adding some practical features like a zip-link bed for guests to have the option of a double or two single beds is a great move. All in all, making sure your property has the basics for a comfortable stay and tasteful décor is usually the priority for your guests. Above all, as long as it’s a nice space to relax in and they can make a cup of tea as soon as they walk through the door, we're sure you'll have their vote!

hen it comes to owning and letting a holiday home in Cornwall, ensuring a warm welcome and making your property homely are two of the most important things you can do for your guests. We hear from George at Cornish Traditional Cottages who tells us: “As the owner of a Cornish holiday let, one of your main objectives is to ensure your guests have such a great stay that they want to return and recommend it to their friends. The key,” he tells us, “lies in the welcome.” When preparing your holiday home make sure to provide the basics. “Stock the cupboards with supplies of tea, coffee, salt, sugar and cooking oil, as well as some washing-up liquid, hand soap, dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent and kitchen roll,” says George. This means guests already have the means to get comfortable and have a cup of tea when they arrive as well as providing the incentive to keep the place clean and tidy. Another aspect to consider is to make sure there are games or colouring books for children and if your property is dog-friendly, guarantee the perfect welcome with a toy and treats! “Cornwall has one of the most competitive markets in the UK for holiday lets. BASE BY THE BEACH The Park at Mawgan Porth couldn’t be better situated to make the most of your holiday in Cornwall.

N

estled in 27 acres of tranquil gardens in a secret valley less than 300 yards from Mawgan Porth beach lies The Park Cornwall. The Park has recently received multiple awards including Gold for ‘Holiday Park and Village of the Year’, Gold for ‘Customer Service Superstars’ at the Cornwall Tourism Awards, Silver for ‘Holiday Park and Village of the Year’ at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards, Gold for the ‘David Bellamy Award’ and a recent '5 Star Holiday Park' rating by Visit England – revealing the kind of standards you can expect to encounter during your stay. Just a short stroll from the beach at Mawgan Porth, with a selection of accommodation including luxury lodges, cottages, park cabins, cladded caravans and a fairyland style yurt village, there really is something for everyone and many of the properties even have their very own private outdoor hot tubs! Not to mention there are also two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), a sauna and steam room, children’s play areas, an onsite restaurant and a children’s soft play area. The restaurant has fantastic food, so whether you're joining for breakfast, coffee and cake, or something from the main menu, you can be sure to be served fresh food,

seasonal menus and a great atmosphere. At The Park there’s no need to leave anyone behind, as a number of properties are dog friendly with enclosed gardens, complimentary dog bowls and even a doggie bag full of goodies. The extensive grounds are perfect for early morning walks and there are some fantastic woodland pathways, coastal footpaths and nearby trails that can be accessed directly from the site. Dogs are also free to roam on Mawgan Porth beach year-round and there is even a spot in the restaurant where they can make themselves comfortable. A favourite addition is the colourful dog showers, which are great after a day on the beach or a muddy walk! There’s so much to see and do, from walking parts of the South West Coast Path, to visiting castles and sightseeing some of the many iconic attractions such as the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Minack Theatre and Eden. You really are spoilt for choice with things to do from your incredible base at The Park.

Bodrugan Barton is the perfect spot for a glamping break, also welcoming group retreats for yoga, writing and crafts in its all-new studio space!

B DISCOVER MORE Sleeping two to four, Bodrugan’s Wigwam cabins are also dog friendly!

odrugan Barton celebrates the great outdoors, providing glamping holidays in stylish, handcrafted wooden Wigwam cabins, complete with en-suite toilets and showers and overlooking 40 miles of coastline. The backdrop of the working farm and glorious countryside in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty generously allows the mind and body to relax and enjoy all that this location has to offer, creating memories that will last forever. From this stunning spot there is so much to do. The fishing village of Mevagissey is within a mile and offers a beautiful working fishing harbour, interesting and individual shops and cafés, abundant ice-cream and excellent food. All this can be done on foot – forget the car – and as you wander into the village, be sure to stop off for a coffee at the Shack in Portmellon and enjoy the revelry on Portmellon beach. The Lost Gardens of Heligan are down the road for garden lovers, with the ever useful and fabulous Lobbs Farm Shop, perfect for buying your supper to cook on your Wigwam’s firepit barbeque. For nature lovers and a bit of exercise wander through the farm and join the South West Coast Path, the beautiful secluded cove begs you to swim before hiking up the cliff and onto the charms of Gorran Haven and the Roseland beaches. Glampers here frequently comment on the peace, the starry skies and the clean air. Many

wake up to make a mug of tea and stand on their Wigwam deck to watch the early boats make their way to sea for the day’s catch, and see them home safe again later in the day while sipping a chilled glass of wine. Boats and kayaks can be launched at Portmellon and fishing trips enjoyed from Mevagissey. Breathe in the salt air and marvel at the deliciousness of fresh fish cooked al fresco. Bodrugan has another string to its very special bow: an old stone combine house has been transformed into a beautiful underfloor heated studio space to accommodate yoga practise, writers and crafters. Wigwam accommodation with the studio provides the perfect retreat for weekends or longer breaks; the course leader gathers his or her group together and they have a remarkable venue for their retreat. Add the heated indoor swimming pool, firepits and a barn for big paella pan suppers and you are transported into a haven of Cornish rest and play, rejuvenated and ready for the real world when it’s time to go home.

If so, you’ll be pleased to know that Padstow is, without a doubt, the foodie capital of Cornwall, with a wealth of independent bars, cafés and restaurants, a number of which are owned by celebrity chefs. These include Rick Stein's Fish and Chips, the Seafood Restaurant and St Petroc's Bistro, and Paul Ainsworth, who owns a number of restaurants in the town, including

Rojanos, The Mariners, and of course,  ABOVE Retreat to supreme Paul Ainsworth at No 6. Not to mention comfort with Mahé Cookery School and Chef's Table, Padstow Breaks giving you a chance to learn from a range of cookery classes conceptualised by Paul himself! But it’s not just the food that sets Padstow apart; it’s also famed for its art, beaches and surrounding countryside, with so much to see and do that most of Padstow Breaks’ guests find themselves returning year after year. Each property includes Egyptian cotton linen, luxury towels, robes and a hospitality basket on arrival, plus WiFi and a parking permit for your car – a real luxury this close to the town. What’s more, two of the properties come with their own private hot tubs! In short, if you could use a break away from the stresses of daily life, where better to let them melt away than Padstow, and who better to stay with than Padstow Breaks?

re you looking for an atmospheric holiday in a beautiful and secluded location? Look no further than the Housel Bay Hotel. Anchored above a secluded cove on the Lizard peninsula, the Housel Bay Hotel was built in 1894 from locally extracted granite. It’s the most southerly hotel in mainland Britain and provides visitors with the chance to explore an exceptionally beautiful corner of Cornwall. On 5th August 1900, Guglielmo Marconi stayed at Housel Bay whilst he was conducting his experimental radio transmissions to Newfoundland. One of the hotel's most famed guests, Marconi developed the first effective long-distance system of radio communication and in his honour Housel Bay has named the hotel bar after him. The i ard is known for its sleepy fishing villages, hidden, secluded coves and clifftop walks. The famous and iconic Lizard Lighthouse was built in 1751, and marks the most southerly point of mainland Britain. Even today on a foggy night you can hear the atmospheric sound of the fog horn panning out across the coastline. Recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, nature lovers will delight in the plethora of flora and fauna in the area. The Lizard’s warmer local climate generates an

abundance of sub-tropical vegetation, creating a rainbow of colour all year round. There are also a variety of bird species to spot along your passage over the sea cliffs, with peregrines, ravens and the Cornish chough regularly being sighted. Organic farming has been instigated on the Lizard as well, which Housel Bay takes full advantage of – serving locally grown meat and fish fresh from the surrounding ocean. What's more, the South West Coast Path runs across the end of the hotel's gardens, offering up a wealth of amazing walks to guests, right outside the hotel. Each season has its own quality, from tranquil summer days with clear blue skies and still waters, to crisp autumnal walks and awe-inspiring winter storms, which you can sit and admire from The Terrace Restaurant. If you want to enjoy a holiday that allows you to immerse yourself in the wild countryside and panoramic views of the Lizard peninsula; to escape from the every day stresses of busy modern life, get in touch with the Housel Bay team and make your dream holiday a reality.

Old fashioned

AND FABULOUS With tempting menus and fabulous new accommodation, The Rod and Line has no need to fish for compliments!

T

he Rod and Line is one of those little gems hidden away in the small village of Tideford in east Cornwall. It’s an inn with beautiful luxury accommodation and the old world charm of a longstanding, time-honoured pub. Inside, you ll find an e citing menu built from the freshest seasonal, locally sourced produce, but it’s really the chefs’ crab dishes, including the delicious Sweet Chilli Crab Claws, which have given The Rod and Line its foodie fame. Last year, the inn’s accommodation enjoyed a fabulous makeover before opening again at the end of the summer. The beautifully converted barn, called An Skiber, contains three lu ury suites. The new design reflects the eclectic and luxurious tastes of owners Mike and Jo Lake-Jones, a great example being the wooden floor running through the entire upstairs of the barn. This was painstakingly removed by hand from an old pub in Plymouth, before being lovingly restored and laid with care. It really is a standout feature! The bathrooms, with floor to ceiling talian porcelain tiles and the contrast of black fittings, enjoy a distinct sense of grandeur, while the accommodation’s lighting has been reclaimed from several types of old boat, lining the corridors and wall spaces as if they

were designed to be there. It’s fair to say that no expense has been spared with the soft furnishings and finer touches either, such as the leather bound Cornish room folders, which, containing stories of each room’s name sake, make for an interesting read. All heated by a bio-mass boiler, which will eventually run the water for the rest of the inn, not only is the new accommodation both stylish and cosy, it’s also eco-friendly. What’s more, Mike and Jo are passionate supporters of local music and up and coming artists, also raising money every year for Cornwall Air Ambulance and Children’s Hospice. In fact, they managed a whopping £22,500 in one night last year! Offering a delectable menu of fresh Cornish produce and locally caught seafood, as well as a great range of real Cornish ales, a trip to The Rod and Line this spring comes highly recommended. It’s dog friendly too, so why not pop in with your pooch after an afternoon spent exploring this beautiful pocket of Cornwall?

RIGHT Enjoy a cosy meal with friends this autumn

ocated on the high street in Lloran House, Rick Stein Marlborough is the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely meal, with a menu that features some of Rick’s most iconic seafood dishes, dishes that have helped put his name firmly on ornwall s foodie map. These include Indonesian seafood curry, Dover sole a la meunière and turbot hollandaise, as well as a great selection of meat, game and dishes inspired by Rick’s travels around the world. This October, the team also welcome to the menu dishes like venison carpaccio with pickled beetroot, duck and porcini pithivier with red wine and rmagnac, as well as monkfish, mussel and prawn stew with char-grilled sourdough – all delightful with a glass of good red wine. The beautiful interiors designed by Jill Stein remain sympathetic to the Georgian architecture of the building and include plenty of cosy corners to get together with friends and family for great food, drink and conversation. The Marlborough team know a thing or two about great food and wine; whether recommending the perfect pairing for your favourite dish, sharing stories of their suppliers or favourite recipes, they’re passionate about fantastic food experiences.

 ABOVE What better way to warm up this autumn?

Meet the team The restaurant recently welcomed evin ole to the team as the new General Manager, who brings with him over 30 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, including time spent working front of house and in the kitchen, as well as running his own restaurants across Wiltshire and Devon. ead hef, ev grew up in iltshire, his love for food beginning at a young age when he started working at a local butchers, before starting a career in the industry that saw him work with world-renowned chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, and quickly move up through the ranks. To get an insight into the knowledge and expertise that Kev has gained from years in the industry, why not join him and the rest of the team at their monthly masterclasses? rom fish filleting to oyster shucking, to shellfish preparation, to cooking game, you can learn new culinary skills, discover hints and tips to make your life easier in the kitchen, and enjoy plenty of tasters along the way. You can also join the team for cosy upper lubs, hosted by General Manager, Kevin; focusing on good food and great conversation, you’ll enjoy a two-course menu put together by Kev, who’ll talk you through each of the dishes as they’re served.

Stein’s set menu Onto the set menu and, it’s fair to say, there’s something quite lovely about taking some time for yourself to enjoy a long lunch. Be it for business or pleasure, you can choose three courses from the Stein’s set menu for just £24.95, add a glass of perfectly paired wine, then sit back and relax. The set menu is available for lunch and dinner, Sunday to Wednesday, as well as for lunch and early evening until 6.30pm on Thursday and Friday. For dessert, try the Marlborough pudding, with 50p from the sale of each donated to charity. The dish, famous in New England

and taken over from Wiltshire by the Pilgrim Fathers in the 17th century, involves a baked tart of Bramley apple, eggs and cream, dry sherry, cinnamon and nutmeg, finished with a glazed Italian meringue and served with warm custard. Following sales of this incredibly popular dessert, the restaurant has already donated its first , to local initiative, Devizes and District Food Bank!

Feeling festive? It will soon be the season for twinkling hristmas lights, shops full of festive fayre and, above all, a week or two of indulgence in lovely food and wine. Book your hristmas celebration in Marlborough and enjoy a special festive menu, full of Rick and Jack Stein’s seasonal dishes, including squid with deep fried Brussels sprouts, kale and chestnuts, and ornish hake casserole, wild mushrooms and baby onions. Served from Monday 25th November, it’s the perfect excuse to get together with family, friends or colleagues to celebrate this wonderful time of year. Whether you’re having a quick bite for lunch, a leisurely weekend dinner, taking part in one of the team’s foodie experiences or celebrating hristmas with friends and family, evin, ev and the team look forward to welcoming you to Rick Stein Marlborough this autumn, so be sure to book a table!
