Our stunning cover feature is all about getting out there to see some of the wonderful, fascinating wildlife living just under the water, either from the coast path where you might see everything from dolphins to basking sharks or seals (try the watchpoint down on the Lizard where volunteers will help you spot some wildlife). Or get out onto the water or, better still, under the water for some diving or snorkelling. Our thanks to John Boyle and Fionn Crow from Shark Bay Films, and underwater photographer Charles Hood for all their expert knowledge and fantastic photos. At Cornwall Living we try to support Cornish businesses and this month I catch up with the Boex twins – who are now working internationally with their design business; dedicated to creating welcoming, functional interiors in all kinds of healthcare buildings… and still find time for a lunchtime surf or swim! We take a look at what’s going on for Falmouth Week and our incognito restaurant review goes all al fresco at the fabulous Hidden Hut. I return to the Victoria Inn to talk to Nik Boyle a year after he was Foodie guest editor and find out what a difference a year has made… including getting married. And we have fashion news, interior design, lots of lovely properties to buy or stay in, as well as health and financial advice, art, sumptuous spas, lovely hotels and some great ideas for eating out. So relax in the sun and dip into this bumper issue. And if this one is good… next month will be even better as we celebrate our 50th issue! Enjoy!

It’s summer and time to get active in Truro!

Outdoor lighting that withstands the elements

It’s time to get off the starting block, and get active. From 15th to 20th August, Lemon Quay in the heart of Truro will be transformed into a sports and activity hub as the ‘Get Active Truro’ festival presents an abundance of free sports activities including ‘come and try’ sessions, demonstrations and exciting displays. This is a great opportunity for the whole family to try a new sport in a fun environment. Cornwall offers a fantastic variety of sports clubs and this six-day event highlights the best of what the county has to offer. Netball, football, hockey, a climbing wall, BMX stunts, golf, yoga, table tennis, cricket, rounders, badminton and rugby are just some of the sports on offer at this year’s event. The festival promises something for everyone and you don’t need to be super sporty to join in; it’s all about getting active but also having fun... and all the events are free! For a full line-up visit www.enjoytruro.co.uk or follow @getactivetruro

For any home, regardless of time of year, good outdoor lighting is always a must. The good news is that Holdcroft SFW, the electrical and lighting supplier based in Bude, can supply a large array of different styles from lanterns and post lights to security lights. Although living in Cornwall is fantastic, the salt air can unfortunately cause an issue with outdoor lighting through corroding most cheap metal fittings. Because of this, Holdcroft SFW stocks products from Fumagalli, which are made from 100%, resin and come with a unique lifetime warranty against corrosion and fading. Holdcroft also sources lighting from Noryls, constructed from galvanised steel or high-grade stainless steel fittings, which come with a 25-year anti-corrosion guarantee. So you can enjoy stylish and practical outdoor lighting that will stand the test of time.

A thrill packed summer on stage at the Asylum Kneehigh’s magical theatre tent, the Asylum, is up and running at the Lost Gardens of Heligan until August 28th. Kneehigh is offering a great discount on a combined ticket to the gardens and a show so why not spend the whole day in this little slice of paradise? There’s lots of choice on the food and drink front from cake and coffee in the Asylum to a three-course special Kneehigh menu in the Heligan restaurant.

Following on is FUP, a new adaptation of Jim Dodge’s dark tale of an unconventional family and their troublesome duck (6th to 21st August) finishing with Shakespeare from The Globe with The Two Gentlemen of Verona (22nd to 28th August). www.kneehigh.co.uk www.heligan.com

This year there are three shows to choose from, starting with The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk, directed by Emma Rice (14th to 31st July). This soaring love story of artist Marc Chagall and his wife Bella is fresh from Shakespeare’s Globe in London, where Emma is now Artistic Director.

Budock Vean Hotel dares to evolve with a stunning renovation When refurbishing a much loved country house hotel, how do you marry the wishes of loyal, returning guests who like things the way they are, with the tastes and demands of the next generation?

you’re winning when regular guests say ‘we really love what you’ve done to our room’.” 01326 250288 www.budockvean.co.uk

Budock Vean Hotel on the Helford River is halfway through a five-year refurb programme. The family-owned and run hotel celebrates the fact that Cornwall offers a wealth of talented, creative people helping to make the metamorphosis subtle and amazing. After all, change should be an evolution, not a revolution!

Newell’s Travel moves to plush new premises in Newquay After many years of trading from tiny and squashed offices just off Newquay’s Bank Street, the opportunity to move to a far bigger office right on the main street was not to be missed for Newell’s Travel. Now in 57 Bank Street, the branch boasts a lavish retail area plus a further comfortable lounge upstairs where appointments can be made and confidentiality can be guaranteed. There is also a superbly appointed rear decking area where, in the summer, clients will be encouraged to take in the views of Newquay Bay whilst selecting their next holiday.

Local firm 3iDog created an interior design for the hotel’s public areas, bedrooms and bathrooms, with comfy and cosy heathery, earthy colours so that the new complements the old. They similarly created a related yet more contemporary look for the Budock Vean’s gorgeous new holiday homes, bought off-plan by private owners but managed and let by the hotel team.

Manager Debbie, Laura and Tash have over 40 years’ combined travel experience notwithstanding their own comprehensive personal travel knowledge. They will ensure you receive the best possible customer service with the most competitive prices available and relish the opportunity to welcome their loyal clients to their new branch. Managing Director, Roger Hawke, says: “We are absolutely delighted with the outcome of the refurbishment. It will transform the way Debbie and her team can now look after our many loyal clients in stunning surroundings”.

It’s been a huge tribute to the build teams and great communication between the guests and staff that work has been carried out so smoothly. Hotel owner Martin Barlow says: “You know

Avoid making a deliberate mistake The decision on whether you should pay for your own care home fees, and how much you should pay, is based on your assets and capital. It’s not surprising, then, that people in failing health can sometimes be tempted to offload assets or even sign their home over to a relative. This can lead to serious problems. When the local authority needs to conduct a financial assessment for residential care and support, they will ask if you own, or have ever owned, a property. “If the answer is ‘Yes’ and you have given it away, they would make enquiries as to the reasons why you gifted the asset,” explains Tony Müdd, Divisional Director at St James’s Place. The local authority does not have to prove that ‘deliberate deprivation’ has occurred; it can just assume that it has. If you are found to have deliberately transferred ownership of your home to improve your chances of receiving financial help, then the local

10 CORNWALL LIVING CLM 49 Columns-FINAL.indd 4

authority can reverse the transfer. Moreover, they have the power to claim care costs from the person the assets were transferred to. Naturally, there can be perfectly good reasons for disposing of a capital asset, especially for the purposes of estate planning. Open a window into another world to discover the beautiful marine wildlife found off our shores.

E

very year, thousands of visitors from around the world flock to the Cornish coast, drawn to the beautiful blue waters. If you’re lucky you might spot a few of them: seals, dolphins, whales, basking sharks and blue sharks among other wonderful creatures. If you’re thinking of taking the plunge to experience life beneath the waves, then Cornwall really is the place to do it. We have it all – a seabed truly teaming with life, with a unique opportunity to explore the awe-inspiring wildlife, shipwrecks and reefs off our shores. A good place to start is with Charles Hood, a respected underwater photographer, who runs shark and sealife safaris off the coast of Penzance. A keen and well-travelled diver, he knows these waters and their inhabitants arguably better than anyone. “When living in Kuwait as a child, I snorkelled whenever

I could and even borrowed a scuba set, teaching myself to dive in the process”, he explains. “Later I joined the student sub aqua club and spent far too many hours diving instead of studying… I bought my first underwater camera (a Nikonos III) and wangled myself onto many expeditions as the underwater photographer.” But what’s so special about Cornwall? “Where else in the world can you live within a mile of the coast and observe such a variety of marine life?” Charles replies. “Within half an hour of leaving home in St Hilary I can be swimming with basking sharks, snorkelling with blue sharks, playing fin tag with Atlantic grey seals or diving on a historic shipwreck.” As well being an accomplished diver, Charles is on the pulse with technology, using GPS and

words by:

Felix Rowe echo sounders to locate sites, and satellite data on sea temperatures, chlorophyll levels and warm currents to track down the larger sea creatures. Charles shares more than a little in common with Porthleven filmmaker, and founder of Shark Bay Films, John Boyle. Like Charles, John has travelled the world, diving in oceans with beautiful wildlife. But it’s telling that they both chose Cornwall as their base. I catch up with John and his collaborator, Fionn Crow, in their Porthleven studio. Shark Bay Films is entirely independent and self-sufficient: John and Fionn devise the concepts, write, shoot and edit the films, selling them through distributors, many through the National Geographic. Their latest project ‘Castro’s Secret Reef’ pre-sold worldwide even before completion. So, having filmed award-winning

continues Fionn. “Plus the golf stream brings a lot of interesting life here; the water is warmer than it should be.” So what is Cornwall’s best dive site? “There are so many fantastic sites its difficult to pick a favourite”, says Charles. “However, it would probably be the Runnelstone. A mile offshore of Gwennap Head, this complex critter encrusted reef rises from a depth of 50 metres to just below the surface. As well as the prolific amount of marine life, the seabed is littered with numerous shipwrecks including the famous carrier the City of Westminster, which founded in 1923. There are so many wrecks around the Runnelstone it’s sometimes impossible to determine which particular one you are diving on!” Charles continues: “In Whitsands Bay, there are a couple of wrecks of particular notoriety. documentaries in stunning locations around the world, what draws John to Porthleven? “Where else would you want to be?” he asks, looking around. “I love Cornwall. It’s home.” With stunning views overlooking the harbour in one direction and the deep blue ocean in the other, it’s not hard to see why. “Mounts Bay is Shark Bay to us!” he says with a smile. Originally a lawyer, John began diving and underwater filming as a hobby. After sending out his first film speculatively, he was surprised just how quickly and positively it was received. Soon the hobby became more serious, and he relinquished the promising law career to pursue his dream. John might be making a tenth of what he could as a lawyer, but here he has found his paradise. “The West Country has some of the clearest waters in the UK, being a fringe that juts out into the Atlantic”,

favourite. She sank during the Second World War and sits upright in just 20 metres of water. This makes it an ideal wreck for all levels of divers and, as it is in relatively shallow waters, you get a long duration underwater. The decommissioned Royal Navy frigate HMS Scylla was deliberately sunk in 2004 to form an artificial reef; it’s now virtually completely covered in anemones, sponges and corals producing a living nursery for many species of fish.” But arguably nothing leaves a more lasting memory than the sight of basking sharks – gentle giants of the ocean, the second largest fish in the sea, and frequently spotted in Cornwall. “By far my most incredible encounters have been snorkelling with basking sharks”, says Charles. “The largest one we spotted was over nine metres long and probably weighed over 10 tons. In September 2008 the waters of Land’s End experienced a second gigantic plankton bloom and the Celtic Sea was simply brimming with

basking sharks gorging on the nutrient rich waters. There must have been over 400 sharks – just an incredible sight. Being plankton feeders they don’t have any teeth and are harmless to humans.” Fionn recounts a similar experience at Praa Sands. “One year, there was an incredible amount of basking sharks – you didn’t even need a boat, you could swim out from the beach and snorkel with them! It was also the first time I’ve actually seen them breach [jump out of the water].” Charles’ pièce de résistance is his ability to track down the allusive blue shark, a naturally shy fish, not used to human interaction. “They can be found within an hour’s boat journey from Penzance but you need a secret concoction of ‘rubbydubby’ to attract them. One occasion we had several blues around the boat when they all of a sudden disappeared – behaviour usually indicative of a larger predator in the immediate vicinity. A couple of minutes later a dozen or so pilot whales simultaneously blew and surfaced right beside our boat – what an incredible spectacle to witness!” The question arises of how sealife tourism sits with conservation, but the consensus among John, Fionn and Charles is that experiencing sea creatures in their environment can only be a good thing, provided it is respectful and helps in our understanding. Though critical of ‘catch and release’ trophy fishing, John’s view is that: “Shark tourism is a really good thing. It’s fantastic increasing people’s awareness of the sheer diversity of wildlife off our coast, which in turn leads people to respect and protect it.” Charles takes a similar stance: “Providing operators are responsible and take care as far as possible from disturbing the wildlife then bringing people and animals together is a fantastic way to both educate and encourage conservation.” All three are keen to debunk the common misconceptions of all sharks as devious, bloodthirsty human hunters, perpetuated by the legacy of the film Jaws and clickbait

“It’s fantastic increasing people’s awareness of the sheer diversity of wildlife off our coast, which in turn leads people to respect and protect it.” John Boyle

tabloid stories. “People still have this mentality that sharks will attack”, concedes John. “We get silly season every year with the inevitable reports of great white shark sightings off Cornwall. But the sad truth is we are the predators – worldwide, sharks are being seriously overfished.” Fionn chips in: “As a diver, you’re a strange creature in the shark’s environment. You’re far more likely to see the tail of a shark disappearing than a mouth coming towards you!” In fact, if respectful of these unique and largely peaceful creatures, there can be nothing more exhilarating than swimming with sharks in their natural habitat. Charles recommends taking a boat trip with a company who has a WiSe or Cornwall Marinelife Boat Operators accreditation. “You are never too young or old to start snorkelling”, he says. “To progress to scuba diving the best place to start is with the British Sub Aqua Club. They offer introductory ‘try dives’ usually for free or at minimal cost. There are also a number of

commercial schools that offer courses – see your local dive shop.” But if the idea of swimming with sharks sends your blood cold, there are always opportunities to experience some of the magic from the comfort of dry land. “So much of Cornwall’s wildlife can be witnessed from the shore using a good pair of binoculars”, says Charles. So, if you’re patient and keep your eyes peeled on a clear summer’s day, you might just be in for a treat – whether dolphins, sharks, whales or seals. Interestingly, as Fionn points out, many of these creatures are in fact here in Cornwall all year round, it’s just that we’re more likely to see them in the summer, owing to the typically flatter seas, clearer visibility, and the warmer weather which draws plankton to the surface, bringing basking sharks up from the depths. Charles encourages everyone to experience it firsthand: “Get out there and do it! Whether it’s walking the South West Coast Path with a pair of binoculars, chartering a vessel or donning a wetsuit and snorkelling with sharks, give it a go. The most common comment I receive from my guests when taking them out is, ‘I had no idea of just how much wildlife there is off the coast of Cornwall – you must have one of the best jobs in the world’.” They make a good point!

ith 19 acres of stunning grounds, this gorgeous collection of converted stone barns offers owners a property that is beautifully thought through to the last detail. Originally part of the Lanhydrock Estate, Trenance was built in the early 20th century from locally quarried slate and granite as a working farm. Now the main house combines original and contemporary features, creating wonderful living spaces, surrounded by established gardens and gazing out across its paddocks to rolling countryside beyond. Completed in 2010, the house boasts a spectacular dual aspect kitchen/dining room with two glazed gables, accentuating the vaulted ceiling and French doors leading out onto the slate patio. Upstairs, the living room has gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside and loungers are kept warm by the wood burner. Perfect for working from home, there is a south facing summerhouse/studio in the garden and a studio and office in the main house. With fibre optic enabled throughout the house, whether you’re working, watching or simply browsing at leisure, you can do it at top speed. The gardens and grounds are a joy. The large vegetable garden with its raised beds

and tunnel is well established and the paddocks, outbuildings, stables and floodlit sand school are perfect for the keen rider. Additionally, the farm has a biomass wood pellet system, providing hot water and under floor heating on the ground floor. This combines with the house’s own solar panels, which also heat the water. Incredibly, Trenance also includes a three-bedroomed cottage and two bed and breakfast units, meaning this isn’t just a home you’re buying – it’s also an established business Possibly the best thing about this property, however, is its situation. Trenance is equidistant to the north coast and the south coast, so you’ve got great access to the water whichever direction you head in. What’s more, while enjoying peace and tranquillity in the heart of the Cornish countryside, it’s conveniently located just two miles the A30, giving you quick access out of the county and, indeed, to anywhere in Cornwall.

n a county full of character, it’s hard to find a property that really stands out. What’s more, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find something that boasts views of the ocean whilst setting itself in the heart of the countryside. Then again… This is Fenterleigh, a four-bedroomed farmhouse in Bossiney with its own onebedroomed, self-contained annexe and detached, two-bedroomed cottage, and it finds itself enjoying the best of both worlds. Dated circa 1320, this property is steeped in Cornish history, being partly an ancient Cornish longhouse. Inside, one can really recognise and appreciate this, especially as they take a seat in the comfortable living room to warm themselves beside the stone, inglenook fireplace. Residents can take a leisurely, evening stroll through the extensive, mature gardens and breathe in the fresh scents of the surrounding farmland, before adjourning back inside, onto the slate floors and underneath the beamed ceilings, where they can head upstairs to one of the spacious double bedrooms and take stock of the truly awesome views over the Atlantic. And, set in Bossiney, a small, tranquil village on the outskirts of Tintagel on the

rugged north coast of Cornwall, which is famed for its links to the legend of King Arthur, this property offers those lucky enough to own it some truly magnificent scenery to explore. In close proximity to the coast path, Fenterleigh promises to introduce residents to some of Cornwall’s most beautiful coastal walks. Perfect for friends, relatives or simply as your own income-on-the-side, the self-contained annex and detached, twobedroomed cottage add significantly to the wow factor of this already promising farmhouse. What’s more, Wadebridge and Camelford are within easy driving distance so, if you weren’t already sure that this is the property for you, you now know it’s as convenient is it is a once-in-a-blue-moon chance to own your own little slice of Cornwall.

The Carriage House A wonderfully unique period home on the historic Killiow Estate near Truro.

INFORMATION Stunning character property Period features throughout Two/three bedrooms Beautifully tended grounds Private garden and parking spaces Perfect for golf lovers Close to Truro

n the heart of the historic Killiow Estate lies the Carriage House which originally served the main house. In 1990, it was converted to provide an exclusive courtyard of individual properties. The original bell tower stands tall above the archway that leads through to the central courtyard. Being Grade II Listed, many features have been preserved and great thought and care have been taken to ensure that these essentially modern homes blend everyday comforts with beautiful stonework, high ceilings, sash windows and slate flagged floors. A charming veranda flanks one side of the internal courtyard, providing useful shelter over the front door. The reception hall has a lovely slate flagstone floor while the high ceilings ensure a spacious feel. A pair of doors opens through to the living room which is light and bright thanks to windows overlooking both the front and rear gardens. French doors open to the paved sun terrace and rear garden. There is an attractive feature fireplace and electric underfloor heating. The family kitchen and dining room are perfect for entertaining. There’s a second reception room or third

bedroom on the ground floor. Upstairs, you’ll find the beautiful master bedroom with en suite as well as another double bedroom, and family bathroom. Offering the best of both worlds, the rear garden and sun terrace is private and belongs to this property whilst the formal courtyard garden to the front is communal and most attractive with cobbled pathways and box hedges. The property has two designated parking spaces and there is plenty of additional parking for visitors. The Killiow Estate has been in existence for some 900 years with acres of country parkland surrounding Killiow House. Much of the parkland is now an 18-hole golf course meaning that some of the road approaching the Carriage House is through the beautifully tended fairways; ideal for perfecting your handicap. Killiow is within a few minutes drive of Truro.

THE CARRACKS, ST IVES Another prized property in Acorn Blue’s armoury is plot 17, The Carracks. A story so far… We talk to Emma Jarvis and Sarah Shearer, founders of Abode Property Agents, and learn the secrets to their success

B

ased in Hayle and serving the surrounding area from Truro to Land’s End, Abode Property Agents place a strong emphasis on you, the client. Unlike other property agencies, Abode doesn’t simply sell houses – they match people with homes. Founders of the agency, Emma Jarvis and Sarah Shearer tell us their story of how they came to be one of the most devoted, passionate and professional property agencies in the county. “Sarah and I met while working in another local estate agent,” Emma explains. “While doing our best and taking the company forward, it soon became apparent that ‘we could do this ourselves’, pulling on each

other’s strengths and identifying each other’s weaknesses.” Emma reflects on this moment, realising as she reminisces just how bold their move was! Between them, the pair had a very clear vision of what they wanted to achieve. Wanting to change public perception of the industry, they aimed to branch out independently, taking a fresh, passionate and honest approach to estate agency. On opening, they held an open day in their new office and, Sarah says, “we were overwhelmed by the amount of support from local residents and businesses in the area. “We met a lot of resistance from the traditional lenders when we first started, so

we tried the crowd funding route. Thanks to overwhelming support from other business people, family, friends as well as our own persistence and perseverance, we were able to raise the funds and, finally, Abode was born!” Emma fondly looks back over the relationship that her and Sarah have developed over the years. Between the two of them, they combine a host of skillsets, strengths and, as is only natural, their own individual weaknesses. “Sarah is very organised and deals with the day to day nitty gritty of running a business, while I consider myself the ‘ideas’ part of the partnership. Often, I will see Sarah’s expression change to a look of dread when I say ‘ooh, I’ve got an idea!’ however, after discussion, as long as we think it’s viable, Sarah will take the baton and run with it.” The pair love to be involved with the community and Sarah tells us how one of their first goals was to improve networking in the immediate area. “We decided to set up a business breakfast, which has now been successfully running for over two years.” Held on the third Wednesday of every month at Birdies Bistro, the Business

Breakfast Club has proved to popular with regional business owners, banks and solicitors firms, to name a few. “As well as getting involved with the local community, we like to raise funds and awareness for charities. We’ve held coffee mornings at our office for the RNLI, The Hayle Day Care Centre and Hayle in Bloom. Recently, we also sponsored the yellow paint station in this year’s Rainbow Run for Little Harbour” (Children’s Hospice South West). And it doesn’t stop there! Impressively the dynamic duo are also members of Synergy which is part of Rotary International, helping where they can to organise local events. Like most of us, Emma confides that the two find themselves excitedly counting down the days until Christmas, at which point they take the reins of organising the wonderful Hayle Christmas Fayre. Impressively, 75% of Abode’s clients now come from client recommendations, which speak volumes for the quality of the pair’s hard work. As you might expect, Emma and Sarah are incredibly proud of their achievements so far and look forward – as do we at Cornwall Living – to seeing what the future holds for the agency.

Coastal chic A lesson in coastal-inspired design from interior design experts Iroka.

A

tlantic Watch is the latest interior design project from experts Iroka. A sophisticated seaside theme runs throughout this calm coastal property located in the sought-after town of St Ives. This stunning holiday rental features an open-plan living-dining and kitchen area with heavenly views of the Cornish coast and the sandy white beaches just seconds away from its doorstep. The property boasts contemporary light fittings from Flos, Artemide and others, which were used throughout this impressive holiday home, along with statement mirrors from the Italian designers, Miniforms, perfect to give the feeling of space and luxury. A soft palette of neutral tones combined with bold hints of cobalt blues and seagreens were used to complement the spectrum of stunning colours of the sea views across the way. By combining these delicate hues with textured wallpapers and split face mosaic tiles on a feature wall, the overall look and feel make for a calm and luxurious finish. The split face tiles carry through to the contemporary bathrooms to resemble the local clifftops surrounding the spectacular St Ives area and beyond. A selection of contemporary furniture brands were chosen by Iroka's interior design team for effortless style and robustness: Italian brands such as Novamobili, Calligaris, Flos, Kartell and Miniforms; and a selection of Danish furniture items from Softline were featured alongside stunning and modern handprinted Cornish lampshades from KIWI Print Studio in marvellous maritime prints. Furniture items such as the Kartell Masters Chair mimic the form of ocean waves, whilst striped cushions from Swedish designers Eightmood add nautical stripes to give a subtle nod to the local fishing industry. Simple made-to-measure linen Roman blinds and curtains in neutral shades pay homage to the coastal vista, making the stunning view the focal point of each individually styled room. To add that extra special touch to finish bespoke cushions were incorporated using fine French fabrics from designers, Casamance and Casadeco.

e all know that current interior design trends can be hard to keep up with, if only because we haven’t all got the skills required to simply pull our house apart and start anew. What’s more, simply finding something that’s fresh, up-to-date and inkeeping with what’s hot and what’s not can be difficult, especially as we start browsing through the overwhelming range of options now available on the market. Don’t be put off though, as Cornwall Tile Centre and Studio One South West have everything you need under one roof when it comes to your bathroom and tiling needs. It’s not often you’ll find such a concise service in one place; Mark Fowdon from Studio One recognises the need for a service made easy. Having originally trained as a plumber,

Mark has now been supplying and installing the highest end bathrooms and wet rooms all over the south west for the past decade. At the heart of the company is a business ethic that strives to meet and beat your requirements, with a design that is both functional and stunning to the last touch, whatever your style and budget. WALL TILES Go for something a little more rugged, selecting from the range’s three-dimensional textured wall tiles, which create sculptural effects for bright walls that combine an intensely decorative effect with gloss glazing to create something intense, deep and brilliant. Walls of any size can be transformed into the focal point of your interior design, bearing that desirably sleek yet stand-out-from-the-crowd urban, contemporary look. CONTEMPORARY The fabulous Dwell range is on display in the Cornwall Tile Centre showroom. Bright and honed, the colours of these porcelain tiles cascade through a range of grey hues, creating a refined project of contemporary style that is sharply broken by the brilliance of the turquoise covering. Resistant to colour fading, these tiles are exposed to sunlight during the manufacturing process, meaning your love for the hues in these tiles will never fade. RECEPTION Beautifully modern, the Dwell Reception range provides a striking porcelain surface that is soft to the touch and enhances any elegant, contemporary space with the shiny effect of spatula-applied resin. This is an ideal option for the creation of youthful, architectural spaces. As well as the Dwell range, Atlas Concorde offer a spectacular range of 3D ceramic

wall designs, ranging from the subtle to the standalone. Spectacular in every pattern, these designs are truly enviable, with options well suited to each area of your home. RIBBON Our favourite is the Ribbon effect. Soft and sinuous, the wave effect given by this design is perfect for the bathroom. In fact, animated by light and shadow and evocative of soft and intense waves, this pattern is well suited to any room of a house that’s inspired by the sea and, in Cornwall, what could possibly be more appropriate? Whether you’re in the midst of a refurb or simply like to browse, take a trip to Cornwall Tile and Studio One South West. With so much to offer under one roof, with show rooms in Liskeard, Wadebridge and Plymouth, there’s bound to be something to inspire your inner-interior designer, no matter where you are in the south west.

Je ne sais quoi

Interior designer Nicola O’Mara helps you achieve the dream home, while staying in control.

W

“Nicola doesn’t ask you what you want your room to look like, she asks you what you want your room to ‘feel’ like”

hether you are building your dream property, embarking on a new renovation or simply refurbishing your existing home, making important decisions can become very stressful as well as costly if they go wrong. With over 20 years of interior design and build experience, Nicola O’Mara has successfully project managed and completed many wonderful interiors including her own property renovations. Her wealth of experience and knowledge means she can offer her clients guidance, informative tailored solutions and expert design advice. Many people think that involving an interior designer means handing over the reins to someone else – losing your own vision for a controlled ‘design look’. Nicola doesn’t work in that way – she uses her experience, up-to-date knowledge and innate creativity to help you realise your own design vision, but crucially, in a way that ensures you are still in control. In the same way that the architect will help translate your vision into a real life project, Nicola will take your design brief and make sure it works for you in the spaces you have, tweaking and advising you on every element from the ideal position or height of a toilet to the weight of the curtain fabric. Nicola believes the best point to instruct a design consultant is right from the outset, ensuring plans, proposals and design conceptions are tailored to the client’s needs. Nicola doesn’t ask you what you want your room to look like, she asks you what you want your room to ‘feel’ like. She then

uses her skills, experience and knowledge to translate this into reality. Crucially she possesses the communication skills to converse with your architect and builder, ensuring that they too follow the concept through each stage. Making design decisions early on potentially saves time, mistakes and stressful situations from arising. Nicola believes that the best solution is to work with the finished look in mind. Plan your furniture, lighting, kitchens, bathrooms, and then the plumbing, electrics and heating. Knowing how you will use the space from the on-set avoids making on-the-spot decisions later. Coordinating the build and understanding the sequence of events can be an overwhelming task, so having someone to bounce ideas off and take the hassle out of decision making is essential. A builder will want decisions to be made on the spot and Nicola will ensure that together you have the answers ready before you’re even asked. Interior design isn’t just about curtains and cushions; it’s also about the ‘je ne sais quoi’ – the feeling you get when a room makes you sigh or a picture of a room makes you want to be in it. You might have a clear idea of the finished look; Nicola will make sure you achieve it.

Interview

n g i s e people Dwith

words by:

Mandy Milano

Passionate about designing interior spaces for extremely vulnerable people; Mandy talks to the Boex twins.

eeting the Boex twins wasn’t difficult – I only had to walk upstairs to interview this ethically-minded, innovative, design and build team. I am greeted warmly in their colourful, airy studio and immediately mistake Sam for Will – something they are used to. They are a growing, exciting business and Sam is just back from Saudi where they have won a contract for their first international project on a new, four-story school for children with Downs Syndrome for a Saudi charity.

Background They were born and raised in Cornwall, going their separate ways when they went off to university, Sam to Newcastle to study furniture and interior design, and Will to Plymouth to study earth sciences. “A surfer’s degree!” quips Sam. They both chose their respective universities for the same reason “To get away but still be by the sea.” Will explains, “But even when we were 18 we thought we’d work together… in Cornwall. We didn’t know what but knew it would be a good idea and something we definitely

38 CORNWALL LIVING CLM 49--EHM--Boex interview--2.00.indd 2

08/07/2016 14:42

wanted to do.” After university Sam worked for a design company that was doing all the graphics for the Eden Project as they opened, as a 3D designer. Will headed off to London but was keen to get back to Cornwall so after a year took a job with Cornwall Council. Then in 2004 Sam took the plunge and started his own design company “working from my bedroom doing small retail stuff and some furniture design.” The business started to grow, tenders were won, and he put the call in to twin brother Will to come and run the company with him. Sam explains with grin: “We are mirrortwins: one right handed the other left, one predominantly right brain the other left, and so on. So it’s a match made in heaven for the business. I am the main creative one, start things off, do the designing and then Will takes over the project management, and we both get involved in the people side.” Smiling, Will adds: “But it is quite hard for staff, we work very well together, we are sensitive to how the other is feeling, often knowing intuitively what is going on and what needs to happen… we are having to learn to talk out loud a lot more!” What they do It was working in the healthcare sector where they really found their calling. Sam tells me: “That first year together we were

working on a waiting room for a local hospital, it just ignited a passion in us to work in healthcare.” They now work for Children and Adolescents Mental Health Services (CAMHS), on paediatric wards, in dementia care and other hospital settings. “These are some of the most vulnerable people at a really difficult time.” Sam tells me passionately, the words really starting to flow, “And they have to enter this daunting institution, not knowing where to go, or what to do. The interiors are often grey, cluttered and complicated to navigate even when you are well! So by working with staff and users we can make the space more welcoming, easier to use, much less daunting and still be functional.” Will picks up the tread. “Yes they have to be fit for purpose: easy to use for both patients and staff. We spend a lot of time upfront talking to all the people who will use the space, getting to the bottom of what is really needed.” Sam grins again. “We love the work, we are so lucky to be making a difference to people’s lives when they are feeling so vulnerable.”

“It’s about a lifestyle we are incredible happy with; the excitement of running our own business and doing something good”

On Cornwall “We have had challenges being based down here – but it is part of the ethics of the business really.” Will explains, “It’s about a lifestyle we are incredible happy with; the excitement of running our own business and doing something good. It’s about developing new, more flexible, business models that work.” They seem to be getting the balance about right too, with plenty of work on the books, but also regularly seen jogging down to the reef for a surf at lunchtime. Weekends are for family, friends and the beach. Will says: “Cornwall is an amazing place, every weekend is like you’re on holiday, you just go straight out and it’s all there for free.” Sam chips in, “And we are now doing the stuff we did as kids with our families. And… we love coming to work on Monday morning!”

hen decorating a room, be it a kitchen, bathroom, living room or bedroom, there are many choices to be made. Often, however, while we busy ourselves picking wall colours, worktops, curtains and the like, what we choose to put on our floors can turn into more of an afterthought. In fact, how you choose to finish your floor can have a huge impact on the end result, as it can easily change the look and feel of a room. Choices these days are endless and can sometime seem like a bit of a minefield. This is an area in which the team at Carpet Connection in Helston are experienced though, with knowledgeable staff on hand to offer plenty of hints and advice. If you’re unsure whether to choose carpet or vinyl, textured or patterned, wool or man-made, they will be able to help answer your questions. The company’s showroom on Water Ma Trout Industrial Estate is packed with a vast collection of floor coverings to suit every style and budget. Carpet Connection aims to take the hassle out of buying your new flooring. It offers a free measuring and estimating service

and, to help you narrow down your choices, samples are also available for the majority of its carpets, vinyls and wood flooring to take away and view in your own home. Taking pride in a job well done, Carpet Connection employs its very own team of highly-skilled fitters to carry out the installation of all carpets and vinyl. Should, however, you wish to arrange the fitting of your flooring yourself, the Helston showroom also stocks a wide selection of remnants as well as carpet and vinyl on the roll which can be cut to take away. As a supplier of many well-known brands including Axminster, Brintons, Brockway, Abingdon and Flotex, Carpet Connection has something for everyone. To add that finishing touch to your home, Carpet Connection is also stockist of a wide range of quality rugs.

The great British holiday Make your stay in Cornwall a truly memorable one with John Bray Cornish Holidays.

W

ì TOP John Bray Cornish Holiday properties speak for themselves

ith almost 50 years’ experience letting holiday homes in north Cornwall, the team at John Bray Cornish Holidays understand what makes a great British holiday. Whether you’re a traditional bucket and spade family celebrating sand-castles, ice-creams and crabbing, a couple seeking a romantic break or gourmet getaway, or simply eager to make the most of the fantastic outdoor, active pursuits on offer along the awe-inspiring north Cornish coast, John Bray Cornish Holidays have something to suit absolutely everyone. The company started out offering a keyholding service for second home owners and now manage more than 290 holiday homes all located within five miles of the stunning Camel estuary, and all in the premium locations of Rock, Daymer Bay, Polzeath and Port Isaac.

There is nothing and no-one that they don’t know in this idyllic area and with buckets of fresh, sea air and some of the best beaches, sailing and surfing in Britain, it’s no surprise that many families have been returning to north Cornwall and John Bray for generations. So if you’re looking for somewhere memorable to be together, or have a large group celebrating a special occasion, this north Cornwall institution offers a wide range of family and dog-friendly holiday houses in desirable locations. From homely cottages to contemporary new builds, each homefrom-home offers something unique; cosy log burners and boot rooms for keen walkers, acres of gardens and play equipment for energetic kids, sunny terraces for extended family dinners, separate TV rooms and games rooms for brooding teens with pool tables, table tennis, Wi-Fi and games consoles a-plenty (that digital detox may have to wait!). For those who will accept nothing but the best, choose accommodation with pools, hot tubs, saunas, home theatres and private gyms. If entertaining is your thing, just ask for stateof-the-art sound systems, high spec kitchens and vast living spaces, all set against those sensational sea views. Their beachside boltholes offer breath-taking views of the Atlantic Ocean, so you can be the first to hit the surf in the morning and the last to leave. Roll on the holidays!

FourversusTwo The gloves are off as we put the BMW S1000RR motorbike and the M3 car into the ring to fight for automotive supremacy.

I

meet up with Ocean Falmouth’s expert Sales Executives Oliver Stratton for the M3 and Gregory Pattenden-Oxenham for the RR as they defend their corners and see how these awesome machines shape up in a head-tohead battle. First things first… bike or car? Gregory: “It has to be a bike. They give such a sense of freedom and the ability to get out there and enjoy some of Cornwall’s finest roads. On a bike you really are at one with the road and the machine. It’s such a fantastic feeling of freedom.” Oliver: “For me, it’s got to be the practicality of the M3. It’s basically a family car that you can take the children to school in but you’ve still

got the power and performance when you need it. For me it’s also the safer option and you don’t get wet!” Speed Gregory: “0-100mph on the RR is under 3 seconds!” Oliver: “0-62pm is 4.3 seconds for the manual M3, 4.1 seconds for the automatic, and the optional competition pack brings it down to 4 seconds flat.” Design Gregory: “When you look down the sleek lines of the RR you’ll see that it’s not just built for the track but it’s also aesthetically beautiful. Years of craftsmanship have created a machine that not only functions as a race-winning track bike but also looks good too. So much thought and technology goes into the product right down to the how the wind goes across the panels to give optimum performance for the greatest comfort. At just 204kg the RR is very lightweight and looking at the TT this year and the way Hutchinson performed it’s outstanding to see that a bike can literally leave the showroom and go out and win the TT. It’s not just a bike; it’s a marvel.” Oliver: “Did you know that ‘M’ is thought to be the most powerful letter in the alphabet? The BMW M-factor comes from the way they retune the cars, their aerodynamics, the weight saving, and the Active M Differential. With the M3 you get an all-in-one solution. You could finish the school run, hop over to

“BMW have a badge to look after and they do that in an outstanding way always developing the newest and latest technology” Germany and take it for a spin around the Nürburgring. The design of the M3 is very powerful and flared and sits lightly lower to the ground. Similar to the bike, with the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastics, aluminium and magnesium, the ethos is to keep the weight of the car down – but this does not come at the cost of safety.” Safety Gregory: “With its automatic stability control and upside down forks at the front the RR really grips the road. With Brembo double disk brakes on the wheels, at a 322mm radius with a 5mm thickness, these are very, very strong. You can literally stop on a penny at 100mph. The ability to choose rider mode, either rain, sport or race, allows you to ride it like a 125cc if you want to or to compete on the track, all with safety in mind.” Oliver: “The DNA with the M3 is that they have a long wheel base, meaning the wheels are as far in the corners as they can be. They also have a 50/50 weight distribution so the car weighs the same at the front as at the back, which combines with rear wheel drive to ensure that if the back end does step out so you don’t get the hammer effect. The M3 is exciting and safe at the same time. There’s an SOS feature that in the event of an accident puts a phone call through to BMW in Barcelona where they can pull crucial information from the car – who is in it, how many airbags deployed and even its geographical co-ordinates.” Technology Gregory: “For me the rider modes are the best gadget on the RR, in track mode you get the response of a TT winning race bike. BMW have a badge to look after and they do that in an outstanding way always developing the newest and latest technology.” Oliver: “The way the M3 handles and drives is second to none and you can create different settings that can be switched at the touch of a

button. Suspension settings, throttle response, and dynamic stabilty control can all be all set on two separate buttons. Mode one will get you safely around town while selecting mode two will completely change the car’s identity.”

é ABOVE The S1000RR leads the M3 out on the country roads around Cornwall

Body work and interior Oliver: “Frozen silver is my favourite colour for the M3, a matt finish that you can dress up or down. We also recently built an M3 for a customer in black sapphire with an ivory white interior and together it looked phenomenal. There’s even a little M-badge in the seat that lights up!” Gregory: “The colour scheme that’s most popular on the RR are the true motorsport colours of red, white and blue. You can get cast blacks and red but the motorsport colours make the meanest looking RR. Carbon extras and forged wheels in cast anodised aluminium really turn heads while the Akropovic exhaust system with race cams fully transforms the bike.” Servicing Gregory: “The RR has a 600 mile safety service when we take off the that limit it to 900rpm. This gives the customer the best ability to leant the block basics before giving them the chance to experience the bike’s full power.” Oliver: “You can buy a service pack for the M3 that covers you for five years or 50,00 miles which gives our customers peace of mind. These are performance cars that come in at 1200 miles for their first service where they get a complete oil change and then the service interval is every 18,000 miles or two years.” And the winner is... the RR! However, don’t just take my word for it. Both are awesome pieces of machinery and I can strongly recommend a visit to Ocean Falmouth to see them in all their glory. But beware, you might not be able to leave without ordering one!

l a n o i t i d a r T values We catch up with the team at Cornish Traditional Cottages to discover the benefits of working with a respected local agency.

A

s a holiday-home owner, the question you’ll find yourself asking is why should you work with Cornish Traditional Cottages? It’s a valid question, especially as you consider how to maximise the potential of your holiday let. Fortunately, we’ve spoken to the team for you to discover exactly why they are still Cornwall’s oldest, family-run holiday letting agency. Since 1964, from humble beginnings with one property in Padstow, the business has grown slowly but surely over the last 52 years, now working in partnership with over 250 properties across this beautiful county, and with good reason! In an age of the Internet and rapid, technological growth, it is quite possible for an owner to set up their own website or list on one of the many owner direct portals on the web, which many do with varied success. As a small business with personal service and family values at its core, Cornish Traditional Cottages offers a service that you simply won’t find on the web portals, seeking long-term partnerships based on honesty and trust rather than short term gain. The business’ slow but steady growth is testament to its values, with partnerships

lasting an average of over ten years. A wealth of experience in the Cornish market sets Cornish Traditional Cottages apart. Its size, as a family venture, is the cornerstone of the relationships the team build with customers. Mr and Mrs Lloyd of Tiggywinkles, who joined CTC this season, say, “We chose CTC after researching the online rental sites available. They came across as friendly, competent and local. We have not been disappointed and are very pleased with the wealth of advice, ease of communication and organisation of the agency.” Mrs Fullerton of Sparrows, another satisfied client, says, “We liked the idea of letting our cottage through a Cornish agency and one that was small enough to be personable whilst commanding reasonable exposure in a fiercely competitive market.” So, if this answers your question as to why you should be part of a friendly, experienced and respected Cornish agency, pop into the Wadebridge office for a chat or get in touch.

A YEAR ON…

& it just gets better!

Mandy meets Nik and wife Laura the team behind the fabulous food and warm welcome at the Victoria Inn.

A

“This might be the best pub cooking I’ve had in my life”

wesome and booming are words that ebullient, inn-keeper Nik Boyle uses a lot: “Cornwall is booming, the Vic is really finding its feet and life is awesome”, the past year has been awesome and his lovely wife Laura is… awesome. “Just the perfect foil for me, she runs the business, keeps the team motivated and is the warm smile that greets you when you come in.” Nik tells me with a huge smile. The couple married a year ago shortly after taking over the pub. Laura laughs and says, “I have always loved this part of Cornwall and always dreamt of living here and I don’t ever see myself living anywhere else but over the last eighteen months, it’s felt rather like I was on witness protection… we sold our home and business in Hampshire, moved to this lovely, tiny village in Cornwall, got married and changed my name!” But Laura tells me it has all been wonderful and wouldn’t change it for the world. As from September the ex-ballet dancer excitedly tells me she is dancing again and teaching classes on Saturdays in Penzance.

A year on and this hugely welcoming couple are running a very successful pub and B&B with a reputation for some truly fine food. One of only eight pubs in Cornwall listed in the Michelin Pub Guide, featured in Harden’s and the Trencherman’s Guide, where Nik cooked alongside Jude Kereama from Kota (“my old boss”) at the launch in Bristol. And… Tony Turnbull from the Saturday Times magazine says of their food: “this might be the best pub cooking I’ve had in my life.” The 12th century pub is hugely atmospheric with lots of natural wood and stone, a gorgeous refurbished dining area and pretty walled garden for some sheltered sunshine. Nik continues, “We have a great team here, Laura takes care of front of house, and in the kitchen I have Gary and Lizzie as my second chefs, Gary was here before and Lizzie worked with me in Hampshire; and local boy Jake who has just finished his apprenticeship. Our philosophy on food is still the same: great quality Cornish ingredients cooked carefully with love.” Laura adds: “And the whole team sign

up to a very simple motto: we are here for the customers, without them there is no us! We work hard on that with new staff.” As well as gaining a huge reputation for delicious lunches and suppers, their Sunday lunches have become the stuff of legend; locally cooked meat and produce, cooked with love; they’ve had to extend Sunday lunch hours to midday to 4pm, something I shall definitely be trying. And for their B&B guests, Nik says, “We like to really show off and make guests feel really special. Give them a five-star experience – our breakfast has the works including freshly made pastries and bread; full Cornish breakfast and avocados with eggs, everything you could want… but wouldn’t expect in a little country pub.” I ask Nik what he cooked first for Laura, he laughs and says, “ it was butterflied lamb at her parent’s house. But the main thing I remember is that it was the first time meeting her parents and I broke her father’s barbeque! Imagine… you invite the chef round and he breaks the barbeque! It got mentioned in my father-in-law’s wedding speech several times!” When I ask what he’s learnt over the past year Nik thinks and grins at Laura. “I’ve learnt to share my toys! It’s always been about me, and my goals. But Laura and I are 50:50 in this, so I’ve had to learn to share, and…” he adds, grinning at Laura, “it has been quite tough at times! But she manages me incredibly well. Oh, and being an innkeeper is truly awesome. I love it!” As I’m leaving I meet two guests on their way home after a night’s stay. Tina and Geoff Arnold from Kent are thanking Nik for a truly wonderful time. They tell me: “The food is beautiful, friends of ours who are staying locally are coming back tonight for their third meal here in a row. It’s just so nice to find somewhere to eat really well and stay in such wonderful surroundings.” Good luck for the next year! We’ll definitely be back to this fabulous little pub!

A TRUE CORNISH CIDER Premium ciders and soft drinks made in the heart of Cornwall We planted our first apple orchards on Westnorth Manor Farm, Duloe, Cornwall back in 1992. Since then, we’ve been passionate about using fresh, natural ingredients to craft outstanding ciders and soft drinks. Our award-winning ciders are all fermented using only 100% fresh pressed apple juice. We never use apple concentrate, and maintain the natural apple flavours through slow fermentation over the cooler winter months.

VICKY’S BREAD PROVES A HIT AT THE ROYAL CORNWALL SHOW 2016 has proved a landmark year for Vicky’s Bread, the artisan bakery based in Helston. As owner Vicky Harford and the team celebrate an amazing ten years in the business, they can cap this off with yet another milestone achievement. The Vicky’s Bread stand won the best exhibit prize in the food and farming tent at the Royal Cornwall Show for an incredible third time! Vicky has long championed sourdough – for its quality, depth of flavour and health benefits – way before it became the latest foodie trend. But not one to rest on her laurels, Vicky continues to innovate, with tasty new products including smoked chilli sourdough, beer and buckwheat sourdough, and part-baked flatbreads, perfect for the barbeque. Expect more great things to come too. Having recently relocated to new premises in order to meet demand for the delicious bread, Vicky has taken on three new trainees in the last three months, training all staff from scratch. Then follow this with a walk around to soak up some of the stunning scenery of the Carrick Roads. Mylor Bridge is charming village with

beautiful traditional cottages, as shown by the vintage image recently discovered by landlord Jonny. “We managed to find this great image of the main street of Mylor”, explains Jonny. “It shows the pub in the background with the cottages before they were sadly destroyed by bombing in World War II, which lead to them becoming our car park.” Nevertheless, the village retains its time-forgotten charm and is well worth a visit! THE SHIP INN, WADEBRIDGE STEERS AN AWARD-WINNING COURSE A resurrection has been taking place in Wadebridge where one of its oldest pubs has risen from near dereliction to being awarded Best Pub in both the Cornwall Tourism and South West Tourism Awards 2016. Rupert Wilson, who ran Rick and Jill Stein’s businesses as General Manager for over ten years, has been at the helm of The Ship since reopening its doors in 2013 after a complete refurbishment of the 16th century building. After winning South West Turnaround Pub of the Year at the Great British Pub Awards in 2014, followed by Food Magazine’s ‘Best Foodie Pub 2015’, The Ship has been on a steady course. The menu has a strong fish influence, under the guidance of Head Chef, Craig Jeffery, offering

traditional pub food, along with influences from further afield. Popular weekly changing specials reflect the seasonality of Cornish produce, and there’s a new salad section for the summer. Check out the increasingly popular weekly themed evenings, including Burger Night (Tuesday), Vegetarian Night (Wednesday) and Surf & Turf (Thursday). Being open from 5pm for food means it’s popular with little shipmates who have their own menu to choose from including homemade burgers, mussels and tempura vegetables. A hidden gem A family adventure takes us to the Roseland on the hunt for The Hidden Hut.

T

he Roseland peninsula is one of Cornwall’s hidden treasures. Best reached via the King Harry Ferry, the journey alone across the tranquil stretch of the Fal River gives a wonderful sense of anticipation of things to come. As you drive off the ferry it feels as if you are entering another world, one of magic and promise. It is fitting then that one of the jewels in The Roseland’s foodie crown is The Hidden Hut – and it really is hidden. We pull into the car park, which overlooks the bay and the golden sand of Porthcurnick beach that lies below. A short stroll takes us down a gentle path, where the heady scent of gorse and bracken fills the air, leading down to the beach. Suddenly the smell in the air changes as wafts of Indian spices and warm bread mingle with sweet patisserie and heady coffee notes. What could possibly be the cause of this wonderful olfactory assault? And then it reveals itself, nestled at the back of the beach and literally on the edge of the cliff, The Hidden Hut. The small green shed sits in perfect harmony with its surroundings and as we arrive a small queue of expectant diners is forming at the hatch. Seating is on communal wooden tables in front of the hut, with a few smaller tables dotted here and there. Our children spot some giant beanbags laid out on a grassy bank to the side and immediately head off to stake their claim on a couple. We are more interested in the menu than the seating plan and so head to peruse the boards

ç LEFT Communal tables make for relaxed and informal dining

é ABOVE Dishes are simply served but packed full of flavour

outside. Small, but perfectly formed The Hidden Hut offers a lunch menu that is hard to choose from, such are the delights on offer. I opt for the special of the day, a chicken and potato curry served with warmed flatbreads and couscous. The other half can’t resist a toasted focaccia filled with roast pork, coleslaw and pickles, while our children choose the ubiquitous Cornish pasty. The Hidden Hut isn’t licensed but you are welcome to bring your own wine or beer. We opt for lashings of organic lemonade in true Famous Five style, after all we are on an adventure! All of the food is served in recyclable containers which I do wonder might detract from the taste of the food – how wrong I am. My curry is fragrant, the chicken succulent and the warm flatbread a welcome accompaniment. The pork and pickle filled focaccia is declared a similar triumph, full of flavour and incredibly juicy. And the pasties? Well, they are devoured in minutes. Small girl is unable to comment when asked for her opinion as she is too busy eating while number one son declares it: “The best pasty ever. Every time I take a bite I think yummy in my head,” and he should know, he’s sampled a lot of pasties! I should add at this point that everything is homemade from cakes to pastries, pasties to flatbreads and the meals are prepared on massive burners in an outside kitchen from which the chefs create their culinary magic. As we sit with full bellies and happy hearts the gentle murmur of happy diners in convivial

surroundings makes me realise that you don’t have to have silver cutlery and linen tablecloths in order to produce high quality food – in fact sat eating from a cardboard container overlooking the bay seems to heighten the sense of taste. Lunch is followed by a happy couple of hours on the beach searching for cowries. The lure of afternoon coffee and cake is too much and after a short stroll we can’t help but return to sample the desserts. I don’t have a sweet tooth but my three compadres devour a luscious carrot cake, a light-as-a-feather lemon drizzle and a slab of flapjack that is almost as big as small girl. I am more than happy with a coffee watching the boats sail across the bay. All of the food at The Hidden Hut is available to take away and so in a bid not to end our foodie foray sooner than we have to we order hummus, mackerel paté, flatbreads and olives to take home for our supper. All are delicious but the mackerel paté is outstanding. We can’t wait to return for one of The Hidden Hut’s feast nights when we shall be all grown up and take a bottle of something chilled. But shhhhhhh, don’t tell anyone we want to keep The Hidden Hut our little secret!

An exciting

NEW CHAPTER We catch up with business owners Simon and Victoria Radcliffe as they open their new pup, The Fox’s Revenge.

O

wners of The Old Grammar School, The Thomas Daniell and Nomad Events, Simon and Victoria Radcliffe have outshone themselves with every new opening to date. Good food, delicious drink and even better vibes are at the top of the list of must-haves for the couple, who place a strong emphasis on progressive, quality dining and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

We ask Simon why the pair do what they do, and the answer was really quite simple. Having gained over 12 years’ experience in the hospitality industry and relishing the challenge of ever creating new concepts, whether it’s a groundbreaking cocktail recipe, a new pub or a new idea for a wedding, the two couldn’t be better suited to the career that, between them, they’ve chosen. In fact, it wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that what they do is nothing short of a hospitality masterclass. Curious as we are at Cornwall Living, we ask Simon how it was that they came to take on the new site, previously known as the Viners, in Summercourt. “We were approached by the Simpsons to redevelop and take on the Viners pub in Summercourt”, he explains. “Off the back of our success in Truro, it was an opportunity that we didn’t want to miss, especially as we’re keen to have a presence in the Newquay area.”

So, what’s new? Simon and Victoria, after huge success with The Thomas Daniell in Truro, have decided to take the elements that make this pub great forward, infusing them into the core values that are set to make The Fox’s Revenge another big hit. What’s more, there are big plans to involve their outside marquee and catering company, Nomad Events, working in partnership with the Simpsons to develop a premium wedding venue. Eventually, in our eagerness to get a taste of what’s to come, we wonder what kind of food we can expect at the Fox’s Revenge. Well, fans of the fare at The Thomas Daniell will be pleased to hear that Simon and Victoria know a good thing when they see

it and are firm believers that, if it’s not broken, why fix it? Taking a sneak peak at the menu, there is a number of delectable delights that stand out as true fancy-ticklers. The lunch menu alone, with its array of fresh sourdough sandwiches, including charred steak and onion, fresh crab and Fox’s smoked applewood cheese and thick cut ham, as well as its inclusion of homemade soup, Cornish steak, wild boar bangers and Fox’s classic ploughman’s is tempting as it is. What’s more, as day turns to night and the evening menu takes its place at the table, appetizers such as scallops or smoked mackerel pate promise a strong start,

before you tuck into your choice from the overwhelming mains menu. Will it be Cornish crab linguine, braised beef cheek or the Cornish grilled half lobster? Or will you go for the Fox’s surf ‘n’ turf, 10oz rib eye or the pan-fried hake fillet? To wash down your choice from such an impressive menu, take your pick from the amply stocked bar, with choices including local favourites like Tribute and Skinners 8 hop, lesser known heroes such as the Australian pale ale, Little Creatures, as well as a massive range of spirits and wines. Ten minutes from Newquay and 15 minutes from Truro, the Fox’s Revenge is a pub in a world of its own. As Simon says, it’s a pub, the way a pub should be!

VIEW

With Falmouth Week approaching, what better time to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere, delicious food, and mesmerising views at The Stable?

F

almouth’s Arwenack Street was once bustling with sailors sharing tall tales of life at sea in the many taverns. Today, the street is still thriving with visitors flocking to the unique boutiques and bistros to savour fine food and stunning views over the estuary. Its crowning glory, The Old Customs House, a Grade II listed building, remains a social hub, now home to The Stable. Fast building a reputation for its awardwinning pizza, pies and cider, The Stable champions everything we hold dear at Cornwall Living: wonderfully flavoursome local produce, a warm welcome, unique and innovative interior design and fabulous locations. With possibly the finest harbour views, what better place to dine out during this year’s Falmouth Week? The building exudes character; contemporary twists of sheet glass and stencilled wall art complement the exposed stone walls and original wooden beams. This ethos of combining old and new is reflected wholeheartedly in the menu – big on flavour, with a firm emphasis on homegrown produce. Founded in the south west, The Stable celebrates our wonderful artisan food and drink, from rare-breed meats to delicious cheeses, and, of course, our beloved cider. Each location’s menu is individually tailored depending on regional specialities, making for a playful, unique dining experience. Take,

for example, the tasty Cornish blue cheese and gouda in ‘The Four Cheese’, or ‘The Pendennis Piggy’ pizza, featuring smoked Primrose Herd bacon. The Stable’s impressive range of cider again includes a few local flavours, from St Ives Barnaluz to Helford Creek. If you can’t decide, don’t worry – the famous cider tasting boards are a must-try: five samplers taken from the sumptuous selection. But if instead you happen to find yourself on the north coast this summer, The Stable at Fistral Beach offers a waterside location that’s equally awe-inspiring. But rather than bobbing boats, you’re vista is completed by surfers riding the waves behind the golden sands. Aside from the delicious cuisine, Fistral is all about that incredible view. So, after a dip in the sea, order a refreshing glass of Polgoon berry cider, tuck into the spicy, warming ‘Fistral Fire’ pizza and savour one of the world’s finest sunsets. Absolute bliss!

S

ummer is officially here and the usual quandary of what to drink during the sunny season has presented itself once more. Cocktails have certainly become popular over the last few years and nothing epitomises summer more than a refreshing beverage filled with cooling ice. With so many to choose from we decided to ask our friends at Constantine Stores what their top picks would be and how to go about making them at home. With over sixty years in the drinks business we’re sure they’ve mixed a few spirits together in their time!

or a dining experience with a difference, why not head over to Old School Bar & Kitchen in Mount Hawke, an awardwinning, family-run gastro pub. This chic and contemporary eatery is set in a beautifully refurbished school building in the heart of the village. Expect friendly service in a wonderful setting as you tuck into innovative, tasty food created from locally sourced produce, ensuring the freshest of flavours. The kitchen team at Old School Bar & Kitchen have created a varied menu offering a delicious and imaginative take on some traditional favourites. All ingredients are sourced from local Cornish suppliers, ensuring both freshness and big flavours, as Head Chef Tom Milby explains. “I like to think that all my dishes have my signature on them in a way!” says Tom. “Not only that, but they are signature to the region. When I look out of my kitchen window, I can see the north coast, where my fish is caught; fields where my meat is raised, and polytunnels where my vegetables are grown. I like to think my signature dish is anything made out of the amazing local ingredients we use, and anything that gives them the respect they deserve.” As well as the old favourites, you’ll find some tempting special dishes promising a meal to remember. The great flavours are matched with exquisite presentation. It’s a winning combination, which we’re sure you’ll love! But it’s not just the food that will leave you wanting more. The Old School Bar & Kitchen team are passionate about serving local real ales, beers, ciders and spirits that perfectly complement the food. So why not make this unique venue your next destination for eating out? School dinners this is not! Look out for the fabulous new summer menus, including a delicious Sunday roast. This is one school you’ll want to return to, again and again.

Drink the

MOON

...until you feel the shine. The Cornish Moonshine Company is set to be a big hit this summer.

W

hen Simon Duggan, founder of The Cornish Moonshine Company, came up with the idea of developing a moonshine, he hadn’t quite anticipated that his playful plans had the makings of a prosperous business model. Since deciding to ‘take a punt’ and produce 200 litres of moonshine, all made from 100% Cornish barley, Simon has been overwhelmed by the demand. Based in St Austell, he branded the unaged white whisky as ‘Cornish Moonshine’ and soon named his company accordingly. Initially, Simon’s intention wasn’t to go full time as a moonshine brewer, but business soon began to boom and his plans to make a small income on the side soon materialised into a substantial living. Realising that he’d need someone to manage the business full time, Simon hired Hamish Ludbrook, a proven entrepreneur. Hamish explains: “The Cornish Moonshine experience is an interesting one. We always start by allowing our customers to smell the Moonshine straight from the bottle. They tend to get a fright, because it genuinely smells like it could singe your nose hairs! Ironically though, once they build up the courage to sake a sip, they find it to be one of the smoothest white spirits they’ve ever tasted – I think this is why it’s in such high demand!” It’s hard to believe that Simon’s main business venture is Wild West Bars,

where he builds-to-order stylishly-rustic looking, homemade cocktail bars. The two businesses, as it turns out, couple perfectly together and Simon is now receiving requests for Cornish Moonshine Cocktails to be sold via Matilda – Cornish Moonshine’s beloved pickup truck. “The guests love it. They love the whole look and feel of what we’re doing. They especially love that we’re doing something completely different.” The Cornish Moonshine Company is set to take off this summer so, if you’d like to try it for yourself or think it would make the perfect gift for a special someone, get in touch with Simon and Hamish via the Cornish Moonshine Facebook page. They’ll be happy to help.

A Fresh

IDEA

Head to Hotel Bristol in Newquay for a range of must-try treats for the summer.

H

ow massively perceptions of Cornish food have changed in the past decade or so. Gone are the days of soggy fish and chips on the beach. Nowadays, visitors not only travel with their taste buds, but will specifically ask about seasonal produce or which foodie treats to take away with them. One person always in the know is Pam Perring, Head Chef at Newquay’s Hotel Bristol, whose advice for visitors would mirror that of the kitchen team: “Keep it totally fresh and buy it straight from the harbour. Local crab and lobster are fantastic, but scallops are another personal favourite; easy to cook and even easier to eat!” For those who like full-flavoured fish, local mackerel makes a deliciously popular starter at the hotel, however, while guests unable to pick a favourite dish could always try the special ‘Trio of Fish in a Thai Broth’. For Pam at least, the freshness is key and you’re often best enjoying the culinary side of your visit on the day itself. “Forget

supermarket fish, where you’re not sure how long it was kept,” she says. “From the harbour you can buy directly from the day boats; or even book a trip with a local skipper and go and catch it yourself for an evening barbeque on the beach. Great fun – and it couldn’t be fresher.” Tellingly, activities such as foraging and picking your own strawberries also popular. It only goes to show how much of a draw food experiences are these days, whether you’re local or visiting. Perhaps the most unsung food highlights of Cornwall, however, are the great dairy produce and sweet treats (rhubarb and strawberry crumble with clotted cream, anyone?). Anyone with a taste for authentic, freshly-baked fare should head to Hotel Bristol for afternoon service. Or, better still, save the date for the Newquay Food Festival (16th to 18th September) this year where you can try selected treats from Pam and the Hotel Bristol team yourself. Find further news, offers and sample menus online.

Sleep in style

We spend roughly one third of our lives sleeping – a fact most us of forget when we consider replacing our mattress, explain the Julian Foye team.

I

“Julian Foye will deliver and fully install your bedframe and mattress in your home”

t’s important to recognise that a good night’s sleep is not only necessary for our ability to function at our best, but it’s also essential to our health and wellbeing – as the cells in our body actually rejuvenate and revitalise the most during our sleeping hours. We all appreciate how wonderful the comfort of our bed feels after a tiring day, but many of us don’t realise that a mattress lacking in adequate back support reinforces poor posture and does not keep the spine in alignment, frequently resulting in aching stiffness and lower back pain. Naturally, a comfortable and supportive mattress is a vital aid to enhance our sleep and if your mattress needs replacing it can contribute to backaches. If you are susceptible to back pain choosing the ideal mattress is crucial and, with such a variety of mattresses on the market, selecting the right one can be confusing… Julian Foye has an impressive

selection of beds in store, including luxury divan beds by Hypnos and Vi-Spring. Their stylish collection of wooden bed-frames is available in a choice of painted colour finishes, complemented by a wide range of bedroom furniture in contemporary styles to tempt every budget. Leading bed brand Hypnos has recently partnered with Yale to create a unique bed that discretely and safely stores your valuables in a hidden, coded safe. The safe is secured behind a discreet upholstered drawer front, built into the divan base. Perfect to store your laptops, jewellery, passports and cameras and so on, the Yale safe comes accredited with £10,000 valuables protection, plus a £1,000 cash rating, making it ideal for your home and an additional benefit for a holiday let property. At Julian Foye finding the right bed for you is made simple by the friendly expert guidance through pocket sprung or memory foam mattresses (or a combination of both) to select the best mattress for you. Plus, Julian Foye will deliver and fully install your bedframe and mattress in your home. If you’d like assistance in choosing the correct mattress, don’t hesitate to contact Julian Foye’s bed experts.

A clifftop paradise

With one of the finest locations in Cornwall a stay at the Polurrian Bay Hotel is hard to beat.

P

erched on the cliffs amongst 12 acres of landscaped gardens, with south facing views across Mounts Bay and the Atlantic Ocean on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula, the Polurrian Bay Hotel is the ultimate family seaside hotel – it’s no wonder that it’s been chosen as one of The Sunday Times Ultimate 100 British Hotels. The original Polurrian Hotel dates back to 1890 and it was the first hotel on the Lizard Peninsula. Over the years the hotel has hosted a number of famous guests including the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi, who stayed at the original hotel in 1901 whilst conducting his experiments to send the first transatlantic

message in Morse Code from nearby Poldhu Beach across the Atlantic to St Johns, Newfoundland. The hotel was re-launched in July 2011, following an imaginative make-over of the public areas and bedrooms – think sofas that you can sink in to after a day’s exploring, a stunning Vista lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows and ‘to die for’ views and bedrooms that are fresh and contemporary, with a boutique seaside style. As with all Luxury Family Hotels, the ethos here is very much that parents shouldn’t have to compromise on quality just because they are travelling with children. The public areas are welcoming

Facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, pretty gardens, tennis court, spa treatments as well as a complimentary OFSTED registered Den for younger guests, that during school holidays holds movie nights, game nights, workshop events and outdoor games. There’s also the Blue Room for older children where they can absorb themselves in a favourite selection of video games, or perhaps challenge some of the other younger guests to more traditional pastimes such as a game of pool or table football. The hotel has a private beach, with public access, literally on the doorstep, with a little path snaking through the gardens down to the pristine sands of Polurrian Cove below – buckets, spades and crab lines are available to take down to the beach. Beyond the hotel a wide range of sporting activities can be arranged from kayaking, coasteering and horse riding to surfing and golf. For days out there are rich pickings with pretty coves and gorgeous gardens all across the Lizard Peninsula.

Superb Cornish cuisine is a highlight at Polurrian, and the team were recently awarded an AA Rosette. Whether you opt for family or fine dining, the menus are based on ingredients sourced from local growers, artisan suppliers and of course the very freshest local seafood. Mealtimes are designed to make everything as easy as possible for families. Breakfast is very much a family affair. Even the youngest guests can help themselves to the buffet and pile their plates with cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit and pastries. There is also a delicious choice of hot breakfasts, from Belgian waffles with berry compote to a full, traditional Cornish breakfast. Lunch is informal and relaxed. On balmy days dining tables spill out onto the terrace for al fresco meals and afternoon cream teas. Picnics are available if you want to go out exploring for the day. Children’s High Tea is available with the Den Team on-hand to help out, so you can relax and enjoy the view with aperitifs and nibbles. Or if you prefer to sit down for dinner together, there is a family dining option. There’s also a Sunday Breakfast Club where children are supervised giving parents the chance for a good lie-in – what a treat!

EFFORT We meet those forging the future of fine southwest dining at Senara in Penzance.

O

ne of the top restaurants in Penzance, Senara is renowned for incredible food and service. Its recent accolade of an AA College Rosette of the highest level has confirmed not only the high standard of the kitchen, but also that crucial dining experience. What’s more, with views over Mount’s Bay and a daily changing menu focusing on fresh, local produce, Senara always has something spectacular to offer. The lead for full-time Professional Cookery and Hospitality at Penwith College, Jaime Gaspare has over 20 years working as a professional chef and food and beverage manager in London. She has worked all over London in restaurants such as Home Bar, Cantaloupe, 192 Bar, Fifteen London and The Wellington Club, before moving into private catering and events with Melissa Webb Ltd, Urban Productions and the YumYum Club. Jaime ran her own successful events company for five years, before moving to Cornwall to set up the Hospitality department at Penwith College. Chef-lecturer Dave Izzard’s career has seen him gain experience across the globe. Dave started his culinary journey at the age of 15, working at a restaurant in Penzance. Whilst completing various qualifications in hotel and catering management, he spent time working in France and South Africa before returning to Cornwall. Dave Williams is the colleges’ lead training advisor in Hospitality and Catering. He’s been working in the industry for over three decades, running his own bakery business and supplying most hospitality businesses in west Cornwall. Dave is a master chocolatier and baker. Justin Ashton is a chef-lecturer and training advisor. He has worked as a professional chef for over 17 years and as head chef in a number of restaurants, including The Beach at Sennen and The Lime Tree at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens and has been awarded Michelin Guide entry. Training advisor in licensed hospitality and food and beverage service, Dean Bungay, also lectures in wines, cocktails and barista. ☞

He has worked in licensed premises since 2006, including managing bars and delivering training to St Austell Brewery employees. He has won various competitions for barista, wine and spirit work. Tony Duce, training advisor and chef lecturer, has 26 years’ experience working with some great chefs at 3 Rosette and Michelin star level. He moved to Cornwall 16 years ago to head up the kitchen at the Fowey Hall Hotel before running his own restaurant in Lostwithiel. Tony also worked for the Polizzi family at Hotel Tresanton. He now looks after the Steins’ apprentices. Working as a hospitality training advisor and lecturer in hospitality and food and beverage service, Mark Lewin has over 20 years’ experience managing five-star hotels and organising bespoke hospitality events of all sizes. Like Tony, Mark also worked for the Polizzi family. Caroline Parsonage is a training advisor and looks after internal quality assurance for hospitality, food and beverage service. She has worked in hospitality for over 15 years. She is well seasoned at running hotels and front-of-house teams in restaurants and gastro pubs. Resident forager Todd Studley also works part time as a chef lecturer and training advisor at the college. He is also the co-owner of the Secret Orchard Cider Company in Somerset, and has worked as head chef in a number of restaurants around Cornwall. Working as a lecturer in professional

cookery and patisserie at Penwith College, Keith Terry is also a training advisor in professional cookery. He has many years of experience as a head chef and is the former owner and manager of the Cornish Range seafood restaurant in Newlyn. Training advisor for licensed hospitality and food and beverage service is Fiona Williams, who has managed pubs and led training for Bass Brewery staff since 1986. She also managed her own retail business for ten years and, alongside Dave Williams, is responsible for internal quality assurance within the work based learning delivery team. Darren Buckley works as the business development advisor for businesses within the hospitality industry. His role is helping businesses to develop and upskill their staff by advising on all funding opportunities for apprenticeships and other bespoke training, helping with recruitment and being the point of contact between the college and businesses. With such a talented team and wealth of experience at the helm, it’s no wonder that Penwith College’s hospitality alumni progress on from Senara to work at the south west’s top eateries.

Discover heart-warming stories at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek.

S

et in 42 acres on the beautiful Helford estuary, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a must-visit destination that everyone will be talking about for many months to come – heart-warming, educational and exciting in equal measure! The array of furry friends is guaranteed to put a smile on your face, whatever your age – not just seals, but also sea lions, otters, penguins, ponies, goats and sheep. The sanctuary currently holds the UK’s most diverse collection of pinnipeds. This season, the sanctuary has rescued 65 grey seal pups. A pup may need rescuing for many reasons, from malnourishment after being separated from its mum, to more extensive injuries that require medical attention. Pup season for a grey seal is normally from September to February time. Usually as soon as a pup has reached 40kg and has received a clean bill of health they are then released back into the wild. The sanctuary had its final release on the 6th June at Gwithian Beach. A planned release is a major operation involving several members of the sanctuary team. The rehabilitation pool was drained and each pup was herded into a cage, transferred to a trailer then driven onto the beach to be safely released. The release was successful and the team were very happy to see the pups going back into the wild! Excitingly, the team has already had some sightings of its released pups doing well back out in the wild. Although pup season is now over, there is still plenty to do and see at the sanctuary. To celebrate the release of Disney•PIXAR Finding Dory, find out about Dory and friends at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary this summer. Dive in and learn all about blue tangs and clownfish like Dory and Nemo. Join the team on an interactive trail until 11th September where you’ll discover facts about the real life versions of your favourite Disney•PIXAR Finding Dory characters. Complete the trail and you’ll earn an exclusive Disney•PIXAR Finding Dory reward! Pre-book at www.sealife.co.uk.

A true gem Transform your jewellery or commission new pieces at Cornwall Gold’s workshop.

W

e all have a favourite piece of jewellery, the one we go back to time and time again, or never take off. But what do you do if it no longer fits or has seen better days? Or it gets broken? The answer is simple: you head to Cornwall Gold in Redruth. As well as being the largest jewellery showroom in the south west, selling everything from diamonds to pearls; from palladium to Cornish tin, it’s also the home of a jewellery workshop. Its team of goldsmiths are leading experts in their field and you can see first-hand how they create stunning pieces in the open-plan workshop. Symon Rowland has been a jeweller at Cornwall Gold for the past 25 years. “We do a lot of repairs from broken chains to missing stones; we also deal with a large number of resizing”, he says. “Over time, fingers change size and in the case of a wedding ring resizing is the only option. We have a lot of people concerned that they might have to stop wearing their rings, but it is a rare occasion that we are unable to resize them.” Cleaning jewellery really can’t be overlooked either as Symon explains it can give pieces a new lease of life. “Customers are always really surprised that the ring they’ve been wearing for years can look like new. This is the same with rhodium plating; it protects and restores the jewellery making it look like it did when you first got it.” Cornwall Gold’s workshop also offers a jewellery remodelling service where items can be modified into bespoke designs. The jewellers are on hand to offer a simple and friendly advice and consultation service to help you create the perfect piece. Symon adds: “Some of our most interesting jobs are commissions. We can take old jewellery, melt it down and restyle it for the client. It’s the perfect way to take something with sentimental value but and change it to suit your taste, transforming it into some you can treasure.” The workshop is open seven days a week. Visit the website for more information.

Now with his latest project, his 16th studio album to date, he’ll strip everything right back for the most intimate shows of his career as he takes to the stage playing bass clarinet accompanied by fellow Mercury nominee and MOBO Award winning pianist, Zoe Rahman. A vibrant and highly individual pianist and composer, her style is deeply rooted in jazz yet reflects her classical background.

Save The Last Dance For Me

Tuesday 30th August to Saturday 3rd September Guaranteed to take you back through the ‘music and magic’ of the early ‘60s, a time when each passing week brought another rock ‘n’ roll classic. Featuring Anthony Costa from Blue, this nostalgic, feel-good journey will transport you back to music’s golden era as we follow two teenage sisters through the summer of ‘63. For the first time without their parents – the sisters embark on a holiday to the seaside. Full of freedom and high spirits they meet a handsome young American who invites them to a dance at the local U.S. Air Force base. But young love and holiday romance is never as simple as it sounds, and the sisters soon realise that while the world around them is still watching itself in black and white, life and love can be much more colourful. A feel-good summer show, it features the classic hits A Teenager in Love, Sweets for My Sweet, His Latest Flame, Viva Las Vegas, Here I Go Again, Suspicion and, of course, Save The Last Dance.

small village situated on the north coast of Cornwall, around the corner from Padstow, is Polzeath. One of the world’s most renowned surfing destinations, the golden, sandy beach stretches magnificently between Pentire Head to the north and High Cliff to the west. At the heart of this stunning location is Ann’s Cottage Surf Shop. When it opened back in 1978, everything was under one roof, including the shop floor, warehouse, head office and the buying team. Since then, head office has moved to Pityme at Rock, but the store still stands proud. Located right on the sea front, it is to date the brand’s busiest outlet, aside of course from their clearance store at St Columb.

Families can kit themselves out with apparel and choose from the full range of current wetsuits, boards and accessories, including top brands such as O’Neil, C Skins, Red Paddle, Rip Curl and Gul. And, as if this wasn’t enough, the brand aims to open another, new store in Polzeath by the end of the year, the intention being to solely stock hardware, including wetsuits, boards and accessories. In fact, the new outlet is set to become the biggest watersports emporium in Europe. The team promise to provide one-toone customer service and, when buying wetsuits, you can expect the staff to remain with you for as long as you need. While this can often result in up to an hour or even more being spent with one customer, the

team firmly believe that quality in service is far more important than making sales. The best thing is, you’ll know you’re getting the best advice when it comes to buying surf gear as you see the staff jogging towards the beach, board in hand, to make the most of their lunch break. Life by the sea is at the centre of what Ann’s Cottage stands for, exemplified by the Ann’s Cottage owned brand, Cornish Getaways and some of the stunningly located properties they offer to those seeking the perfect seaside getaway. Having been completely refurbished in 2015 and boasting quite simply awesome panoramic views, Rigi is perched on the edge of the cliff at Polzeath and is a truly stunning location in which to spend your Cornish getaway. Fitted with solid oak bedroom furniture and a contemporary family bathroom, this cottage has its own direct access on to the beach path and is perfectly situated for all the village’s amenities. The cottage itself sits in ample grounds overlooking the bay, probably the most glorious view in Polzeath, especially with the 180-degree vista window enabling guests to take full advantage of the amazing sunsets out to sea whilst admiring the world famous surf on the break below. As well as Rigi, there is Yoho Cottage, situated in the heart of Polzeath and a stone’s throw from the beach. Yoho is a refurbished fisherman’s cottage, having been extended to sleep six over three bedrooms. One of five traditional cottages on the hill leading into Polzeath, this home has been arranged to maximise the views

from the front and back of the property. Outside, guests will find a large, split-level patio at the front, boasting spectacular sights over the village and beach. What’s more, leading off the dining area upstairs is a large, decked area giving glimpses of Pentire Point and out to sea. Conveniently, just a short walk from the property is parking for two cars as well as a larger car park. Guests staying in either of these properties, or indeed those pitching up on Tristram or Southwinds campsites which provide pitches and space for those with portable accommodation of all shapes and sizes, can enjoy fine dining in the Cracking Crab, the onsite eatery at Tristram as well as the Oystercatcher, the Waterfront restaurant and the Sand Bar, each offering a range of culinary delights for all tastes and budgets. What’s more, when the sun’s out, visitors can head to Cone Zone for refreshments including ice cream, coffee and pasties. So, if escaping to an area that’s famous in Cornwall for its outstanding beauty and access to all things seaside, pop into Ann’s Cottage Surf Shop, Polzeath, and get yourselves set for your next Cornish getaway.

Putting on a

FEAST

Head to the Star & Garter in Falmouth for delicious sharing platters and an unrivalled view of the Red Arrows display during Falmouth Week.

A

t the Star & Garter, it all begins with the local produce. The team’s ethic about food is strong yet simple: respect for the animals and the produce used. Lucky enough to be surrounded some of the best suppliers in the country – including the renowned Philip Warren Butchers – the pub is committed to using only the finest, local and sustainably sourced ingredients. Fish comes in direct off the boat while all butchery is carried out on-site, with a nose-totail philosophy, where barely anything goes to waste. The colourful, Mediterranean inspired menu is updated twice a day, reflecting the flow of fresh ingredients coming in and seasonal change. Becca and Elliot, owners of the lovely pub, are firm believers that food tastes better when you share – “we love the sharing style of eating!” In refreshing comparison to standard tapas courses, the pub’s sharing platters are a substantial main course option. So, whether it’s a romantic table for two or a family and friends’ get together, the Star & Garter team are masters at putting on a feast. Sure to be a hit with shellfish lovers is the cockles in cider with n’duja and pain de champagne dish to share. For those who like a more meaty variety of fish, try the platter of chargrilled monkfish tails, cods roe, fennel and burnt lemon. Or, how about sharing the aged

sirloin of moorland beef, potatoes, heritage carrots and bone marrow béarnaise? From 3pm to 5pm you can make the most of the new bar menu, which includes plates of charcuterie and cheese. As the countdown to Falmouth Week begins, it’s well worth scheduling in the world famous Red Arrows display. The Star & Garter has an unrivalled, almost panoramic view over Falmouth harbour, towards Flushing and Carrick Roads – it’s the best vantage point in town from which to watch the Hawk jets whizz through the sky! Throughout the week look out for Star & Garter pop-up stalls on the high street, where you can try the pub’s delicious foods and drinks al fresco and on the go. Once all the excitement is over, there’s no better way to beat the post Falmouth Week blues than with the Star & Garter’s weekly Brisket and Blues night. Every Monday, from 7pm, you can enjoy slow-smoked brisket, campfire beans, homemade chilli corn bread and pickles with live old time blues and mountain music – a winning culinary and musical combination.

Salon style Clare Cowling Boutique Hair Salon celebrates its fourth year as one of Cornwall’s exclusive Aveda hair salons.

C

lare Cowling celebrates an incredible 20 years in the hair and beauty industry this year, having followed in her mum’s footsteps and worked along side her at her salon in Constantine Bay. In her mum, Clare had a fantastic teacher and role model, both in the practical side and behind the scenes. Christine herself was well respected in the industry, particularly for being Baroness Margaret Thatcher’s hairstylist while holidaying in Cornwall when she was Prime Minister! Clare took over the reigns of the business in 2003, with one simply ambition: to take the business to the next level, which she achieved to great effect, also employing more staff to meet demand. After the passing of Clare’s dad, in 2011, sadly due to exposure to harmful pesticides, this spurred her on further to make her parents proud and become a natural hair salon. She had lived from a young age seeing the effects chemicals can do to the human body and now it was her chance to use products that are safe on the skin. After finding her perfect location, only a mile up the road from the

original salon with free parking outside at Higher Harlyn in St Merryn, the next move was to find her perfect brand. Aveda was her number one choice, usually only available in high street salons... This she was not, but it made Clare all the more determined to give it her best shot and prove she was worthy of stocking the products on her shelves! After putting a proposal together and a two-hour meeting, Aveda gave her the green light – a huge accolade for Clare as you really are chosen to be an Aveda salon. Clare now owned a boutique salon, with new branding and stocking high-end natural products. All the hard work swiftly paid off. After the first three months, Clare had sold more retail than in the past five years! Aveda awarded the salon with a growth in retail award for selling as much as any other salon in the south west. After an impressive year, Clare was offered premises in the heart of Padstow and decided to go for it. The salon is the image of the one in St Merryn and Aveda were delighted to support her in the opening of her second exclusive Aveda hair salon. Clare is now in her third year in Padstow and again it has proved a fantastic move. The salons run on a team of eight working between the two. The passion Clare has is fueled continually within her team and she thrives on running the business exactly how

A winning combination

Amanda catches up with Cornish windsurfer, Izzy Hamilton, to discuss Rio, training and looking after yourself in the elements. wind changes and every aspect that can provide us with a gain.

What does your training regime look like? You need really strong shoulders and great leg and back muscles to windsurf, so weights and pumping iron are key to my training. I go to the gym six days a week when I am not racing. When I am racing I will be out on the water and have physiotherapy twice a day. It’s intense but I love it.

What does your eating schedule look like? I eat really healthy freshly prepared meals with lots of seasonable vegetables and need plenty of protein too.

How do you relax? I surf! I love to do this in Widemouth where I grew up. I can see the waves from my home so feel really connected to the sea. So how’s it going for you as part of Team GB? I work with Team GB representative, Briony Shaw as her buddy to find out how we can be the fastest we can. We look at the tides,

How do you look after yourself with so much exposure to the elements? My hair is a big challenge as it gets fried in the sun, wind and sea! Hands in particular get cracked and sore from windsurfing too. Spiezia Head & Hair Oil has been amazing. Age Well Intensive moisturiser really helps soothe my skin and Muscle Ease with Rosemary really soothes aching hands and shoulders.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to pursue a sport to Olympic standard? Choose a sport you really love and don’t take it too seriously when you first start. Just enjoy it and have fun with it with friends who can support you. What’s your ultimate goal? To win a gold medal for Great Britain next time around.

recently met up with Windsurfer extraordinaire and Olympic Team GB representative Izzy Hamilton who is heading out to Rio as part of the GB Sailing team. Izzy moved from Kent to Cornwall when she was just 11. Her parents ran a holiday complex and Izzy really got into windsurfing from a very early age at an innovative kids’ club. Tailored to you Considering the benefits of private treatment at Duchy Hospital.

W

hen Duchy Hospital opened it was entirely private. All patients paid for their treatment, either with medical insurance or their own funds. But more recently, it has begun to take NHS patients too. Why, then, is it worth paying for your treatment to go to the same hospital? In essence, paying for your treatment means that you are treated at your convenience rather than to fit in with the NHS. Private patients can choose when they have their treatment, which can make a real difference. For some this simply means being seen as quickly as possible – in some cases being seen by a consultant on the same day as being contacted. One patient, Mr Peter Fittock, explains the peace of mind that this gave him: “It was an urgent consultation at my instigation and I was dealt with in a understanding and very prompt manner which gave me much comfort at a difficult time.” For others it’s simply about being able to choose a time which fits into their lifestyle. Perhaps you want to be treated in good time to be able to recover from your operation for a special event like a wedding or a holiday. Others find that due to work commitments, the uncertainty of when they will get their appointment or operation causes problems, especially for those who run their own business.

Private patients can also choose the consultant they wish to see. NHS patients are not always given a choice of consultant, or they may be treated by a member of a consultant’s team rather than the named consultant. Private patients also benefit from the assistance of Duchy Hospital’s Private Patient Account Manager, Miranda Field. “We understand that coming into hospital can be a stressful and worrying time”, explains Miranda. “Our aim is to make it as easy and straightforward as we can. We’ll support you with every stage of care, from referral to discharge. This includes helping you deal with your medical insurance, arranging transport, to making sure a copy of your favourite newspaper is delivered to your room during your stay.” Private healthcare enables choice, convenience and an experience designed around you and your needs. And it’s more affordable that you may think. Duchy Hospital offers fixed cost care for many treatments giving a total price for treatment without any unexpected extras. Interest free finance is also available to spread the cost.

O

nce you have experienced a Miracle production or two, it becomes apparent that there’s no such thing as an average Miracle theatregoer, venue or performance. The shows pop up in unexpected and extraordinary places, including gardens, beaches, castles and clifftops. You’ll find wised-up, open-air audience members with their folding chairs and full-blown picnic tables, next to families with blankets chasing children hiding in the bushes during the interval, alongside twentysomethings with a ramshackle grab-and-go hamper of crisps and beer. Miracle has gained a reputation for producing comical, highly entertaining and thought-provoking shows suitable for just about anyone and everyone. With over 37 years of touring experience, its outdoor productions have become a must-do summer activity! “The joy of open-air performance is that every night is different and it really is an etiquette-free zone: you can sit where you want, eat what you want, wear whatever you like”, says Miracle founder and director Bill Scott. “Plus, each setting is transformed as night falls; the actors can never be sure what to expect and must be ready to respond to a dramatic moonrise, a sudden shower or a wild animal trying to get in on the act. For

words by:

players and audience this is a genuinely unique and shared experience.” This summer, Miracle presents a rich and varied season featuring Life’s a Dream, an epic fable of love, war and destiny, touring until 31st July and, back by popular demand, The Magnificent Three – a rootin’ tootin’ toe tappin’ comedy western, touring from 5th August to 3rd September. So, what are you waiting for? Dust off your beach chairs, pack up a picnic and catch Miracle Theatre in a setting near you. Unleash the magic With a brand new children’s trail, new installations and events every day, there has never been a better time to visit Tintagel Castle.

P

erched on the rugged north coast, Tintagel is one of Cornwall’s most iconic visitor attractions. History hunters of every age will love discovering the atmospheric island castle with legendary links to King Arthur. Climb the steps up to the ruins of the medieval castle, enjoy breath-taking sea views, and make a sand castle on Tintagel’s secluded beach – all before refuelling with the finest Cornish fare in the Beach Café! Brand new for this summer is a series of installations – all designed to inspire an adventure around the 18-acre landscape,

and delve deeper into Tintagel’s mysterious past. Don’t miss ‘Gallos’, which means ‘power’ in Cornish – an 8ft tall bronze figure inspired by King Arthur and Tintagel’s royal past. You’ll have to head out to the furthest point of the island settlement to find him – when you do you’ll be rewarded with great views back over Tintagel, and out to the Atlantic sea beyond. The new installations will guide you on a journey throughout both the mainland and island. A series of panels reveal 1500 years of Tintagel’s past – from royal stronghold, to thriving trading port, to a castle of romantic

legend. Look out for the stone compass which points to places across the British Isles connected with the Arthurian legend, and engraved stepping stones around the island garden, telling the medieval tale of Tristan and Iseult. On the beach, close to Merlin’s Cave, a discreet carved face represents Merlin, a figure associated with the site since the 12th century and immortalised by the poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Young history-hunters will love the addition of a new adventure trail. Pick up a free map from the visitor centre and set off on a fun-filled journey into Tintagel’s past. With lots to discover, see and do, this is a great way to get your little time travellers out and about this summer. For the first time there is also a packed programme of events and activities every day of the summer holidays. In the first week of the holidays experts will be digging deep into Tintagel’s past with the Archaeology Festival, from 25th to 29th July. This will be a great chance to see real life archaeologists in action, discover artefacts gathered from digs from around the world, and see if you can unearth your own buried treasure in have-a-go sessions. The Hands on History Crew will be at Tintagel every Thursday to Monday throughout the holidays. Join their fun sessions to discover more about Tintagel’s past and get hands-on with fun activities.

And get set for a summer of Arthurian entertainment on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the holidays – a troupe of performers will bring The Legends of King Arthur to life with fun-filled shows throughout the castle grounds. Whatever day you visit, young adventurers will love exploring Tintagel’s legendary landscape. Make sure to pop into the introductory exhibition during your visit. Opened last summer, it includes an interactive 3D model, which shows Tintagel changing through the years, as well as artefacts found on site. No historic day out is complete without a tasty treat or two – and the castle’s Beach Café is just the place to indulge! Children will love having their lunch served in a bucket with spade (the perfect starter to an afternoon on the beach!), and parents will enjoy the locally and seasonally sourced menu. The fish and chips, crab sandwiches, and cream teas all come highly recommended! Tintagel Castle has been firing the imaginations of writers, artists, and musicians for centuries. With so much to see and do this summer, it’s your turn to be inspired!

Tintagel Castle is open from 10am to 6pm everyday throughout the summer. A family ticket for two adults and up to three children is £20.50. Family tickets for the Archaeology Festival are £23.90 – all other events are included in the standard ticket price.

Advice

Protect your family Speak to the team at Harris Begley to protect your loved ones in case of bereavement.

I

n spite of today’s healthier lifestyles and improved medical technology, it’s a shocking fact that on average, almost 47 adults die every day (aged 18 to 44 years) according to the UK Office for National Statistics, in 2013. If the unthinkable happened and your partner died, quite apart from the emotional turmoil of the bereavement, how would your family cope financially? Even with a Life Assurance policy in place to help pay off your mortgage, if there are children to provide for, how would you cope with the demands of everyday necessities, such as food, clothes, utility bills, childcare or additional expenses like holidays and birthdays? If you think these costs may not add up to much, then consider the findings from the LV= Cost of a Child report, January 2015. The survey looked at the cost of raising a child to the age of 21 and approximated this figure to be over £229,000 – equating to more than £200 per week! That’s a significant sum to find should an income stream end due to the untimely death of a parent... Family Income Benefit gives you peace of mind If you’re a parent with young children, Family Income Benefit is a specific plan that provides a regular, tax-free, monthly (or annual) payment for your dependants. The idea is that it should be arranged to pay out until your children have grown up, so it’s well suited to those with young families and is often taken out over a 10 to 20-year

term or whatever is appropriate for your children’s ages. How it works If you took out a 16-year term policy, which was set up to pay out £20,000 a year and it was claimed against after one year, your family would receive £20,000 a year for the next 15 years, equating to a total payout of £300,000 (if there was no index-linking). However, if with the same plan a claim was made 14 years into the policy term, the total payout would be £40,000. On the other hand, if fortunately no claim at all was made within the 16-year period, then the policy would simply run the complete term without any payout. Whilst this type of policy has no cash-in value at any stage, ultimately you have the peace of mind of knowing that your children are protected in the unfortunate incident of the death of your spouse or yourself. T

his year is a big one for staff and residents at Cornwall Care. Not only have they enjoyed national events such as the Queen’s 90th birthday and their Care Home Open Days but they have also been celebrating their 20th anniversary as an independent Cornish charity. Cornwall Care’s theme for its anniversary and 2016 is ‘celebration’. Across Cornwall, Cornwall Care’s residential and nursing homes have welcomed in friends, families, staff and members of the community to join them in celebration. While they always welcome visitors, these occasions are brilliant opportunities to do something special and show the community what it’s like to live in their homes. During their care home open days, Cornwall Care’s residents and staff enjoyed a variety of indoor street parties, tea dances, tombolas, bingo sessions, raffles, therapies and activities such as reminiscence, singing and drumming. They also had some very tasty buffets, fish and chips, cake stalls and an amazing amount of cream teas. You could pretty much guarantee a cream tea wherever you went that Friday! At Redannick in Truro, residents, staff and friends had a lovely time at their indoor street party, enjoying a beautiful buffet and live entertainment. “Our caretaker has done an excellent job with many pot plants full of colour and the gardens have been slowly transformed, with more light into our residents’ rooms”, says

Angela, Customer Relations Administrator at Redannick. “They can look out onto the bright colour flowers from their rooms too.” With 16 homes and 16 open days, Friday 17th June was a busy day. Every home got involved, enjoying some wonderful activities. There are a few particular highlights: Trevern in Falmouth, where residents made decorations for their ‘Cornish Celebration’ theme and enjoyed pasties, bingo, Bucks Fizz and drum therapy; Cedar Grange in Launceston, where they enjoyed a showcase of their recent activities and events photos; and Chyvarhas in Callington, where they enjoyed a tombola, raffle, cake stand, DJ performance and barbeque style food. At Mountford in Truro they also celebrated the opening of their new dementia-friendly sensory garden, built following their success at winning the runner up People’s Millions prize in 2014. Making a difference Inspiring workshops lift spirits and forge lasting friendships, through Made for Life Foundation.

ade for Life Foundation, a charity set up to help those facing the challenge of cancer, brings people across Cornwall together who are going through similar experiences. It achieves this through a series of regular workshops, encouraging creativity, personal expression and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. But the question one might ask is this: “Do these workshops really make a difference?” Thankfully, we can report, the answer is a resounding “Yes!” Take for example the recent nutrition workshop at the Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre with Becci Gowers. Manager of Made for Life Foundation, Juliette Hathaway, recounts the observations of the centre’s receptionist following the workshop. “The main thing I noticed was the difference in demeanour of the attendees on arrival and on departure. They all arrived somewhat apprehensive but after the workshop they all, without exception, left smiling and with a spring in their step. It was a noticeable and remarkable change. I didn’t attend the workshop but whatever Becci did obviously hit the right spot!” This sentiment seems to be fully supported by the ladies who attended the session. “I found it really useful – thanks Becci

and Juliette. Looking forward to the next session!” Another commented: “Really interesting; made me think more about what we eat as a family – and I’m making changes all the time.” Juliette says: “These workshops are a vital part of what our charity offers we thank everyone who has donated their time and materials to help make these days possible – you are all stars!” There are other ways to make a difference, through fundraising. Viki Carpenter, from St Martin near Helston, raised just over £100 Nordic walking her first marathon at the ‘Race To The King’ ultra-marathon event in Sussex. “My dad died of cancer aged 42 when I was 10 years old”, explains Viki. “At that time there was not much support for those going through cancer and their families, but having seen the huge support that Made For Life offers nowadays, I really wanted to raise awareness as well as funds. If you’re going through this or you know someone who is, please tell them to pop along or visit the website.”
