A very happy New Year to you from all of us here at Cornwall Living!

If, like me, your New Year’s resolution has already gone by the wayside (it was being tempted by a hot Cornish pasty on a cold beach walk!) then we have some other ideas for you. In fact, I rather like the resolution to ‘live life to the full in 2017’ which is growing in popularity rather than giving something up! If that is yours, then we have lots to tempt you: from some January shopping (page 55), to a few activities to add to your bucket list (page 70) – who doesn’t love the idea of a wander round a vineyard? Or how about possibly changing your life with a new hobby, part-time course or doing something creative (page 36 and 59)? The lovely Mercedes Smith tells us about three, very different contemporary artists to watch out for in our cover feature (page 12). Felix catches up with another rising star, but in the music world: Cornish singer/ songwriter, the very gorgeous, Rosie Crow, about her career, home in Porthleven and juggling work with a new baby (page 66). I meet the equally charming Mark Sansom, Falmouth’s Harbour Master, to find out how he landed such an unusual job (page 39). As ever we have some fantastic competitions for you (page 83). Don’t be shy, it could be you; one lucky winner got in touch after hearing she’d won to say: “Wow! What a lovely surprise! I love Cornwall and only returned from a break to St Ives and Porthleven yesterday!” So try for a surprise of your own this New Year. Plus, great home improvement advice, gorgeous properties, places to visit and things to do. It’s all here for a bumper New Year! So, here’s to a fantastic 2017,

M andy

The great British summer holiday is bigger and better than ever in St Ives and Tregenna Castle Resort is the perfect base for you and your family. Boasting an exciting range of activities available throughout the holidays, your little ones are sure to be kept entertained. Tregenna Castle also offers the ‘outstanding’ Castle Kids club, a nursery available for newborns to ten year olds and providing brilliant care for your children, so you can nip off for a treatment in Castle Beauty.

Flooring specialist Aspen and Ash, of Redruth, has secured exclusive access to sustainably-felled English oak from the world-famous Tregothnan Estate. Reeds Pharmacy is here to ensure you make the most out of your medicine Reeds Pharmacy in Truro offers two free NHS services to help you improve your use of medicines. The NHS New Medicines Service comes into play when you are prescribed a new drug for: asthma and COPD, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, reducing your risk of blood clots. The team over at Reeds Pharmacy will speak to you three times over the first few weeks of treatment to see if they can help with any problems. There are two reasons why this may be useful. Firstly, evidence shows that people are most likely to use a drug wrongly in the early stages of treatment, so a bit of extra help can help to fend off problems later. Secondly, particularly when the medicine has been started in hospital, there is likely to be a lot to take in when you leave so advice is easily forgotten. The NHS Medicines Use Review service looks at all your medicines and is for: patients taking high-risk medicines, patients recently discharged from hospital whose medicines were changed while they were there, patients with respiratory disease, patients at risk of, or diagnosed with, cardiovascular disease and regularly being prescribed at least four medicines. This isn’t the same as your doctor’s review. GPs look at whether the drug is right for the disease and Reeds Pharmacy looks at how you use your drugs to see if they can suggest improvements. For more information call Reeds Pharmacy on 01872 272106

espected as one of Europe’s leading centres of creativity, Cornwall is an inspirational location with a world-class art scene, and the extraordinary diversity of work being made here attracts collectors from around the globe. For art lovers who like to be ahead of the game, I’ve selected three rising stars of contemporary practice whose very different modes of working showcase the breadth of talent on show in 2017. Trudy Montgomery Trudy Montgomery is one of the next generation of artists in Cornwall whose work is part of a direct line of British expressionist painting which has its roots in the groundbreaking abstraction of artists such as Patrick Heron and Peter Lanyon. Since the 1950s, the intuitive use of colour, mark and gesture in Cornish painting has aligned works made here with those of European and American abstraction, works in which the canvas becomes an arena for exploring the expressive qualities of paint. Now living and working in an idyllic corner of Penwith, Trudy recently returned to the UK after 14 years in California, a place which, as demonstrated in her bright, beautiful palette and wide canvases, parallels the pure light and coastal landscape of our own west coast.

“My work is very much an exploration of colour,” says Trudy. “I let intuition guide each decision regarding colour, tone and brush selection, as well as the placement, direction and intensity of gesture on the canvas, and I use a variety of techniques including staining, layering and scraping back to build texture and interest. It’s important that I abandon any early form of ‘prettiness’, or other markings I get attached to which could shut down my creative flow. I let the paint lead me, responding directly to colour on canvas so that the composition evolves organically – though there may be uncomfortable phases of accident or chaos – and the final painting is typically very different to the work I first imagined.” The sheer size of canvas and strength of colour in Trudy’s works make for deliciously emotive viewing, and hints of landscape in these otherwise highly abstracted paintings make her exhibitions akin to an intensely joyful, semi-spiritual walk through the more beautiful parts of your own imagination. Having exhibited to acclaim in London, Dubai, Los Angeles and Berlin, her career is surely one to watch for those with a passion for the ongoing history of Cornish painting, and serious collectors of abstract art. Kerry Harding It’s tempting, at first glance, to put Kerry Harding’s work into the category of Cornish landscape painting, except that in countless ways which inspire the mind and confound the senses, her work is so much more than that. While the physical, and in particular the textural qualities of the Cornish landscape act as inspiration for her paintings, Kerry takes a purely practice-based approach to her work, building and then partially obliterating the literal image through a process of adding, stripping, sanding and scraping back paint, sometimes reversing the canvas entirely, masking off areas of colour and disrupting the surface with thinners, so that what emerges is a curious and mesmerising semi-figurative image that is both familiar and fascinatingly disconcerting. “Figurative elements may inspire my work, but it’s the process of painting, the physical ‘on and off’ that is important to me. You might say I work in constructive pursuit of the accidental – I let the paint and progression of the image direct me. If I try to control what happens on the canvas things get too contrived. I’m trying to find a meaningful balance between the abstract and the figurative in a way that amplifies the viewer’s experience of the work. I don’t want a beautiful landscape, I want visual oddity, a sense of the surreal in my painting, of the hyperreal perhaps. I want people to look at my work and wonder: ‘How on earth does she do that?’” In a county celebrated for its 19th and 20th century landscape painting, artists like Kerry are renewing the idea of landscape for the 21st century, and breathing new life into a genre crucial to the ongoing credibility of the region’s art scene. With a BA from Ruskin

ë ABOVE LEFT School of Art Oxford, a Masters in Fine Art Painting from Falmouth and successful shows Kerry Harding at her Krowji studio in the UK, Australia, America and South Africa, this artist, now resident at Cornwall’s Krowji é ABOVE Kerry Harding art studios, is currently among our most Trevellas Flake intriguing and forward thinking painters.

Alice Freeman St Ives born Alice Freeman’s work focuses primarily on what she calls “the dark edge of beauty”. Through both sculpture and exquisitely detailed metal plate etchings, she explores the textural qualities of natural and biological forms, creating works which are at once visually appealing and oddly disturbing. Working in a wide range of materials including paper, ink, latex, light and papiermâche, Alice’s thought provoking pieces are as much about the phenomenon of viewer response as the forms which inspire them. Ideas of the incongruous and intrusive are themes which run throughout her sculptural

work, while ideas of decomposition and the erosion of form are reflected in the corrosive, metal plate etching techniques she uses to create her images. “I really enjoy the process of etching,” says Alice. “It’s the alchemy and science of it that I find most interesting, alongside the fact that you never truly know how an image will turn out until the plate is printed. I spend time building layer upon layer on the etching plate before I strip it back and start the process over again. Much of my work is focused on repetition, making marks, building layers and creating textures. By eroding the metal plate down to its core, little by little my images take on a three dimensional, visceral quality. I am interested in the way an etching can take on sculptural qualities, and how sculpture can become almost linear – a drawing in space.” As the daughter of respected St Ives artist Ralph Freeman, Alice spent her childhood in and around the creative environment of his studio on Porthmeor Beach, recently building on this artistic pedigree with a BA in Drawing and Fine Art from Camberwell University of Arts in London and a scholarship at the Siena Art Institute in Italy. Selected in 2016 for membership of Bristol’s Spike Island Print Studios and the prestigious Royal Academy of West England Artists Network, Alice is making her mark as a uniquely promising talent amongst Cornwall’s youngest generation of artists. The grounds offer a field, woodland, paddock and gardens, so there is plenty of space for exploring and creating your perfect setting. There are also numerous public footpaths connected to the grounds, which offer some fantastic country walking. The main house is a charming and substantial five bedroom, Grade II residence with an adjoining four bedroom cottage and a further two cottages that are currently used as holiday lets. These properties are perfect for continual family income, or can be altered to suit your needs. This really is a perfect opportunity. Before entering the main house you will also find ample parking along with a workshop/garage fitted with solar panels, so there is even more scope for customisation. Inside the main house you will find lovely, cosy rooms that are ideal for comfortable family living. With a large and airy living room and breakfast/dining room with a cast iron woodburner, this

home provides comfort at every turn. Many of the rooms also boast beautiful exposed beams, which add to the rustic charm of this country farmhouse. While settled comfortably in this peaceful, rural setting, the property also boasts close proximity to many notable activities and amenities. Only nine miles away from the bustling coastal town of Falmouth means shopping, fantastic eateries and the everinteresting Maritime Museum are only a short drive away. There is also a range of beautiful Cornish beaches close at hand with striking coastal walks and watersport activities on the stunning waters of The Carrick Roads. Stithians Lake also offers a range of watersports, so there are many chances for fun days out in this relaxed yet exciting part of Cornwall. It is safe to say that this outstanding family home is a true hidden gem and a wonderful opportunity, offering a lifestyle with an income in a rustic and unspoiled corner of Cornwall.

the urban

We hear from Associate Director of Savills, Ben Davies about his thoughts on the increased interest in Mawgan Porth.

O

ver the past few years, and particularly since 2014, Savills has seen a surge in interest in Mawgan Porth, a small village on the rugged north coast, offering some of the finest sea vistas in the county. Since then, the team have sold several incredible properties between £600,000 and £3 million, which is of course incredible for a small seaside village, many miles from the traditional hotspots of Rock and Padstow. We ask Associate Director of Savills, Ben Davies why he thinks this is the case. “It’s fair to say that both the Bedruthan Hotel and the recent award-winning hotel in Conde Nast, the Scarlet, have attracted many people who often visit this beautiful stretch of the north Cornish coast, several times a year,” says Ben. “Indeed, they’ve really put Mawgan Porth on the map as one of the UK’s most idyllic coastal retreats.

“For many people, the destination is seen as the perfect antidote for their busy urban lives, with some choosing to move to the village permanently. With miles of stunning coastline to explore and one of the country’s finest spa hotels, you can see why! And with Cornwall Airport so close, it’s easier than ever to make the very best of a weekend break.” In fact, the relatively small amount of property and low levels of supply in the area have underpinned the market. A great example is a recent sale that the team handled this autumn, which went from the open marketing launch to the exchange of contracts in under three weeks and for a figure significantly above the guide price. The close by airport in Newquay as well as the current ‘staycation’ movement, with many families choosing to holiday in Cornwall rather than travel abroad, has increased demand further and it’s this – the increasing popularity of the stay-at-home holiday – that Savills expects to continue creating demand in this beautiful part of Cornwall.

é ABOVE With glorious seascapes and stunning stretches of sand, it's no wonder Mawgan Porth is ever becoming more popular!

Family values We take a look at what makes proud, family-run Cornish business, JC Williams the success that it is today.

n Former manager Bill Kitchen’s retirement in the late 80s

T

radition is something that we in Cornwall hold dear and JC Williams, a small, proud Cornish company based in Helston, is no exception. Impressively, now in its 62nd year of trading, it continues to base itself on the same, fundamental family values that set the ball rolling so many years ago. Since opening, the store has seen many changes, including the expansion of floor space, the addition of exemplary and experienced staff to complement existing personnel, as well as an increasingly diverse range of manufacturers. The team, which constantly strives to provide the best level of choice for a wide range of budgets, brings everything together with expert knowledge and experience. The friendly staff can guide customers through their new selection, from purchase to installation, with everything being taken care of by a team that knows its trade. Mr Robert Williams, of the third Williams generation, has long since taken up the mantle from his father, delivering some of the finest, local customer service around. When we speak to him, he explains that “it’s surprising how many myths we’re able to dispel for customers who, ultimately, just want a simple, good night’s supportive sleep or a comfortable chair to sink into.” In store, you’ll find a huge range of upholstery, meaning you can find the perfect ‘put your feet up’ chair, as well as a huge choice of cabinet furniture, from modern bi-folding and slidingdoor wardrobes, to traditional cottage and contemporary oak ranges. Simply put, there’s something in-store for every taste! What’s more, if you’re looking to complement your new purchase, there’s a whole range of dining room furniture, bedside tables, sideboards and accessories to choose from and, if you’re worried about your neighbours getting jealous, the team can guide you through a choice a curtain fabrics, helping you achieve privacy whilst maintaining a true, homely look. Admirably, even as the Helston based business continues to stock more and more of the top manufacturers on the market, including Parker Knoll, Sherborne and Vi-Spring, to name a few, it remains true to its roots as a local shop faithfully serving the community.

ith wrapping paper back in the cupboards, the tree in the attic and the mince pies long since demolished, it’s time to look to the year ahead. And what better way to do this than breathing life back into your home with new pieces of smart, chic and well-crafted furniture. So, which of your well-loved rooms could do with an upgrade? When you sit down in the living room in your favourite chair do you feel completely comfortable and relaxed? If the answer is anything but yes then perhaps it’s time you upgraded to a Stressless recliner! Most Stressless recliners come with the signature base, which combines beautifully shaped wood and sleek aluminium, so you can sit in style. And with Balance Adapt elegantly

integrated into the base, the recliner’s soft rocking movements will ensure true comfort, from the bottom up! Of course, the living room isn’t the only place you want to feel comfortable and relaxed. Your bedroom is one room that is completely your space, and tailoring it to your exact needs has never been easier. With a fantastic range of beautiful beds, all with unique and attractive frames, and cleverly designed storage, your bedroom can become the room of your dreams sooner than you’d hoped. And for those that spent their festive season hosting countless dinner parties for friends and family, a new dining table, chairs and sideboard is the perfect way to refresh your social space. With a stunning array of designs, made with various woods

that have been finished to perfection, your table can finally be its own centrepiece. The sideboards also boast a wide selection of woods and styles, each tailored to suite different tastes, so that everyone can take home the perfect piece to accent their room. Whether you are creating a den in which to escape the world, have a conservatory that could use a cosy place to read a book, or simply want to curl up by the fire and watch some television, a sofa is the classic way to unwind while instantly adding a splash of style and colour to your room. Or perhaps you are unsure of the changes you wish to make or simply need some inspiration. Pop down to one of Julian Foye’s designer led showrooms and you can get a feel for what your home could look like. Sometimes we don’t know what

we need until it’s been expertly arranged before our eyes. The experienced sales staff will be happy to guide you in your choice of furnishings, or for an in-depth discussion you can book an appointment with one of the Julian Foye designers and really pinpoint the style you want to go for. So, set aside some time this New Year and check out the Julian Foye winter sale, which runs throughout January, as the only thing better than refurnishing your home is refurnishing your home for less.

Meet the maker We catch up with Leah of the inspiring Cornish brand Flying Dodo, recently brought back from extinction and now featured on the new online marketplace Little Piece of Cornwall.

Tell us about flying Dodo clothing and its Cornish past Flying Dodo Clothing was started by our parents in 1992 from a barn on our small holding on Bodmin Moor. They then opened a shop in Truro and the funky nature of the clothing made it a real hit with the locals and tourists alike. We became known for our vibrantly dyed and printed sweats and snug, good quality fleeces. What made you want to revive the brand and bring the Dodo back from extinction? We had been thinking about it for a while and kept the trademark going. Then when my brother, Reuben, and I felt we had the time, it just seemed like the right time to start up again with our dad Michael Kramer and friend Laurie McCall, who has a design background joining us.

Little Piece of Cornwall brings Cornwall’s finest independent retailers all together in one place, offering the many people who hold Cornwall close to their hearts the chance to savour it, wherever they may be, with products delivered direct to your door. Discover more Cornish makers like Flying Dodo on the website.

Tell us your plans for 2017 and beyond Our goal is to add to our current collection, and manufacture more products, hopefully locally. We also hope to bring back our classic fleece and build on womens and childrenswear, as well as maybe going into homewares. Watch this space for our own Flying Dodo fabrics, designed in house! Why did you join the Little Piece of Cornwall marketplace? We are very keen to get our brand further afield, and Little Piece of Cornwall provides the perfect opportunity to do just that. What do you love the most about being a Cornish based independent business? Cornwall is a great county and most of us live here apart from me. But the brand is Cornish with its own strong identity.

What inspires you to do what you do? Creating stuff for people to love, wear and keep – no throwaway fashion here! We always pair comfort and style when designing, also considering sustainability too.

é ABOVE The trademark vibrant hoodies and printed sweatshirts from Flying Dodo

What has been the biggest highlight of your venture so far? Re-connecting with our customers from when we were in business before. Seeing the love for Dodo on social media has been really touching. We love the brand and so it’s great to hear people saying they love it too. The night the website launched was overwhelming, with many more sales and hits than we had ever imagined!

Mark greets me with a big smile; it is to be the first of many. As befits the Harbour Master his office has a stunning view out over Falmouth harbour. We chat about how he ended up in the role… something that still seems to mystify him and, like many, he puts it mainly down to luck!

Mark’s parents ran a hotel in Tintagel, where he got his lifelong love of Cornwall and surfing. But, at 16, it was off to sea as a deck cadet with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. “I remember I was paid the princely sum of £840 p.a. out of which I had to provide all

The Queen was attending the Commonwealth Games so joined the Royal Yacht in Australia. We sailed back across the Pacific stopping at all these amazing islands… it was extraordinary… many were hardly visited at the time.” He pauses, “We played tennis and football against the islanders and I remember one match where the tennis court was invaded by hundreds of enthusiastic islanders: we had to stop playing!” He is full of stories: trips to the Falklands and others best told after supper with coffee and brandy, which get more colourful as he tells me of his time working for the Sultan of Oman’s Royal Yacht Squadron. At the time the Sultan of Oman was rapidly

e m o s e l o h w A tradition

Every issue, we dine undercover at a different restaurant, tasting the menu and putting the team through their paces in search of the finest eateries, freshest produce and best service. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Look out for our ‘Tried and Tasted’ seal of approval. é ABOVE A well stocked bar with a selection of real ales to tempt…

We head to The Prince of Wales in Newton in St Martin on the Lizard Peninsula, to sample a delicious Sunday roast with the family.

A

s a dedicated follower of one of this country’s more wholesome traditions, no weekend would be complete without a sojourn to a pub for a couple of pints of real ale and a Sunday roast. And so it was, a couple of weeks ago that I found myself being driven, along with the family, to a place where I could indulge this pleasure. A slate grey sky that rested above RNAS Culdrose failed to dampen my enthusiasm; in fact it only served to make the welcome prospect of entering into a warm and cosy pub that more appealing. Dipping and rising on the wooded lane that runs past the creek, made famous by Daphne Du Maurier, we soon arrived at our destination – The Prince of Wales in Newton

in St Martin on the Lizard Peninsula. We’d discovered this little gem at the tail end of the summer and had been impressed immediately by both its atmosphere and the food on offer. Back then we’d sat outside in the charming and well-maintained garden offering ample space for our two small children to run around in, but not so much that they could vanish from view. Disembarking in disorderly fashion we crunched our way across the gravelled car park at the rear of the pub, adjacent to its camping field. With a diary note made to come back in the spring to spend a few nights under canvas we walked under the garden arch, along the path to the rear entrance. brewery, once remarked that he always checks out the state of the patio area and hanging baskets before entering a public house. He maintained that it was a good indicator of how everything else was likely to be in the establishment. The Prince of Wales would have met with his approval. Closing the door on a dismal day behind us, it was as we remembered it: clean, bright and airy with a little shelving unit by the main bar hosting an array of traditional board games for those wishing to relax over a quiet dabble with dice or dominoes. The chill winter air was certainly no guest, being kept at bay by the warmth emanating from the log-burning stove as we made our way to the bar. A friendly and genuine smile greeted the whole family, and immediately we felt relaxed and ready to indulge! A pint of Magik best bitter from the Keltek Cornish Brewery accompanied by a small cider and three fruit drinks were carried to our table. We could have gone à la carte, choosing from pan-seared gurnard or pulled pork quesadillas to name but two, but having enjoyed what was on offer in the summer we all went down the traditional path and settled on the roast sirloin of local Cornish beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

Our order was served with aplomb and a smile. We all tucked in. And the verdict… tender beef, accompanied by vegetables that hadn’t been boiled to death or left to stand under an interrogation lamp for far too long. In other words just what we wanted. I celebrated with another pint of Magik and tentatively enquired if anyone wanted dessert. They all looked pretty full to me but then my judgement has been way off in this area in the past, and there was the temptation of Roskilly’s Organic Ice Cream on offer. A resounding “yes please” proved my hesitation wrong, yet again. So, in summation, I can say we all came away feeling we’d done our best to enjoy our Sunday on the Lizard, helped in no small way by the staff, food and beverages at the Prince of Wales. You should try it too and help preserve one of the country’s traditions. And remember what Hilaire Belloc said: “When you have lost your inns, drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the last of England.”

What’s

COOKING?

We take a look at what’s new at Rick Stein’s Cookery School for 2017.

E

veryone cooks better at Rick Stein’s Cookery School. Maybe it’s the quality of the fish and shellfish they use or the view out over the estuary across the water to Rock, but either way it’s a smart place to do some cooking. Here are some of the new cookery courses that the school has available in 2017:

Indian Seafood – one-day course When Rick visited India, he embarked on a spectacular journey through India’s subcontinent in search of recipe inspiration and the perfect curry. On this one-day cookery course, head chef lecturer Nick Evans will teach you how to balance the flavours of fish and Indian spices as well as create some of Rick’s favourite dishes including Amritsari fish, Chettinad crab curry and Mangalore lobster.

3rd March 2017 – £198pp 14th June 2017 – £198pp Long Weekends – two-day course If you’ve watched Rick’s new Long Weekends TV series, you can now learn how to cook some of the dishes he discovered on the show on this two-day cookery course. Enjoy chef demonstrations delivered by the school’s expert chefs, hands-on-cooking,

plenty of tasters and a glass of wine or two along the way. Having mastered how to cook dishes like Icelandic breaded lamb chops with spiced red cabbage, calamari souvlaki and smashed liquorice meringue with berries, you’ll not only leave having developed lots of new cookery skills but also a signed copy of Rick’s new Long Weekends book.

27th and 28th May 2017 – £360pp 18th and 19th October 2017 – £360pp Spanish Tasting Evening Arroz marinara, crema catalane and chickpea, squid and chorizo salad... Prepare for a glorious assault on your senses as you travel through Spain on this tasting evening at Rick Stein’s Cookery School. Watch the expert chefs demonstrate how to create three showstopper dishes while you sit back, relax and enjoy individual tasters whilst sipping on a glass of wine and taking in the spectacular views of the Camel Estuary.

CREATE THE PERFECT WEDDING WITH CHEFS FOR HIRE CORNWALL

NOW’S THE TIME TO ENJOY A LEMON ARMS SUNDAY LUNCH

Chefs for Hire Cornwall is an enterprising new business led by Cornishman Terry Adamson, and can help create, and provide, private dinner parties, recruit quality chefs and front of house for your business, cater for any function or make your wedding an unforgettable foodie experience. Chefs for Hire Cornwall will ensure your needs are met whatever they may be, whether supplying first-rate chefs and front of house for your wedding or running the whole kitchen, which covers the hiring of the marquee, table decoration and ensuring the menu and suppliers consist of quality produce. Terry utilises his 17 years of experience as a chef, with a keen eye for detail, a passion for food and a strong business head, all of which combine to deliver a memorable wedding or private party. So make your event shine by hiring the team at Chefs for Hire Cornwall, and let them escort you into a new culinary world.

Now that the winter’s in full swing, weekends have become a time, once again, where we look for sanctuary, warmth and good food to warm ourselves, especially after chilly afternoons spent exploring the weather beaten landscapes of Cornwall. On Sundays, in particular, the demand for a hearty roast dinner is at an all time high at this time of year so, with this in mind, we recommend heading down to the Lemon Arms in Mylor! Enjoy a brisk stroll around the creek and admire the little sailing hub in all its bobbing glory, before settling down next to a roaring fire as you wait for your lunch. Generous portion sizes, locally sourced ingredients, succulent, tender meats as well as homemade roast puddings and gravy make the Lemon Arms roast dinner a seasonal must. If you don’t believe us, go see it for yourself; we assure you, you won’t be disappointed!

Cornish & independent We take a look at why you should head to HBH Woolacotts for the January sales.

S

omething we all love about Cornwall is the abundance of Cornish, independent businesses. Offering bespoke services and one-of-a-kind, artisan wares for us to choose from, many operate on a small scale. However, now and then one rises to the challenge of competing with the online and superstore-dominated world of retail and, bearing the accolade of south west’s premier electrical retailer, HBH Woolacotts is a fine example. In 2016, this outstanding company celebrated 40 years of delivering some of the finest customer service around. Director Chris Hemmerle is immensely proud to be at the head of such a successful, independent Cornish business and he places a lot of praise at the feet of his staff: “We have friendly, knowledgeable staff who really know their stuff. Something we’re immensely proud to do is offer honest advice to those looking to spend their hard-earned money on new technology.” So what else makes HBH Woolacotts the place to shop for electricals? To start with, throughout Devon and Cornwall, there are eight showrooms, meaning that wherever you are in the south west, you’re never far from the comprehensive range of top-brand products that’s designed to suit all budgets. From televisions, home cinema, HIFI and domestic appliances, to IT products, gaming ware and on-the-move

tech; whatever electrical product it is that you’re after, HBH Woolacotts has it. And, with superb knowledge of their trade, the HBH team are always on hand and happy to help. This even extends to their delivery and installation service! Extending throughout Devon and Cornwall, it comes free of charge and what’s more, the in-house service network means that, should a product go wrong, the issue is dealt with swiftly, efficiently and most importantly, with a smile! So, with all this in mind, you can understand why we at Cornwall Living are so excited to see what the forthcoming January sale has in store. Starting on Tuesday 27th December and ending on Saturday 31st January, we recommend keeping a hawkeye on the website, because one thing’s for sure – stocks won’t last for long!

Choosing your creative future Want to kickstart your career in the creative industries?

C

hoosing where and what to study can be one of the most important choices you’ll ever make about your future. There are 2.9 million jobs in the UK creative industries, which contribute over £84.1 billion per year to the UK economy. In fact, since 2011 the number of jobs in the creative industries has increased by over 13%, with one in 11 jobs in the UK now within our creative industries. Before making the decision to carve out your creative career, it’s important to explore your options.

Creative study at Plymouth College of Art Founded in 1856, Plymouth College of Art is a specialist art college that believes in the transformative value of creative education, and that access to high-quality education for life in contemporary arts practice is a catalyst for personal, professional and cultural development.

Open days If you or your children would like to find out more, the college holds regular undergraduate and postgraduate Open Days. You’ll get the opportunity to learn about our Foundation Diplomas, BA (Hons) degrees and Masters programmes, to meet staff and students, and have the chance to make an informed decision about gaining the skills necessary to join the creative industries. The college also holds pre-degree open days at its new, dedicated city-centre campus for 16 to 19-year-old students interested in creative post-GCSE study options.

Live demonstrations and workshops As well as meeting passionate students and expert staff, open days are a chance for you to explore Plymouth College of Art’s worldleading studio spaces – with courses from across the college holding live demonstrations and workshops for you to take part in. These vary throughout the year, but regular demos include glass-blowing, portrait photography, and printmaking.

Alumni talks Open Day talks from Plymouth College of Art alumni show you first hand how creative study could shape your future career, or perhaps those of your children. Recent open day speakers include BA (Hons) Photography graduate Andy Ford, whose work has been published extensively in NME and Kerrang!, shooting musicians like Biffy Clyro, Mark Ronson and Bring Me The Horizon.

Mark’s unique style is depicted brilliantly in this latest release from the Ebony and Ivory series of musical themed paintings. With painstaking attention to detail, these limited editions are set in high gloss resin with a high lacquer finish and frame. For a wide range of original paintings and limited editions by national and international artists, visit the gallery or see the website.

Jeweller Sally Napier creates handcrafted jewellery, emphasising attention to detail whilst keeping a contemporary edge. Each piece and design is created individually, combining semi-precious stones, silver, gold and freshwater pearls. You can purchase online or contact Sally if you’d like to visit her studio to see her work or discuss a commission or repair.

“Throw me to the wolves and I will return leading the pack.” Using ancient 13th century inlay techniques, carved not painted, each tile is individually hand carved into wet clay, inlaid, glazed and fired over three days. No tile can be replicated, making each bespoke piece a truly one of a kind, visual presence in your home. Commissions welcome.

The gallery’s light and airy space on Porthleven’s harbour side exhibits original work by some of Cornwall’s finest artists in a range of mediums. A bespoke framing service is available here as well as the Own Art scheme. View the work available on the regularly updated and fully ecommerce enabled website.

Eat Art is a collaboration of artists, designers and craftsmen with many years’ experience in the art of picture framing. The team collaborate with some of the best artists working in Cornwall today and clients from all over the UK to supply art and frames to the trade and public. With simple solutions from just a few pounds to unique handcrafted designs, Eat Art offers a complete bespoke framing service.

At the top of Fore Street in Porthleven lies this surprising new gallery opened by resident jeweller, Julia Schofield. This small studio shows the work of a glass-maker, a ceramicist, a photographer, a sculptor, a furniture-maker, a goldsmith and textile artists, print-makers and painters, all of whom are from within 20 miles of the port.

A popular favourite from Penlee’s collection of fine art, the charming ‘School is Out’ (1889) will be on display this winter alongside other work by artists of the renowned Newlyn School, the name given to the colony of artists that settled in the small fishing town from the 1880s onwards.

The Craft Kiln (Cornish crafts), Sail Loft Emporium (antiques and collectables) and Cscape Art are part of The Old Workshop, next to the main Charlestown car park. Many originals, prints and cards by artist Sarah Blakey, and photographer Mick Blakey, are available at the gallery. For more information as well as winter opening hours, visit the website.

We catch up with Porthleven-based musician Rosie Crow on releasing her new album and doing it her way.

hose with an ear to the ground will have heard a buzz building out of Porthleven – a rising star of the music world on the ascent. So, with GQ magazine declaring artist Rosie Crow “the best thing to come out of Cornwall since Poldark”, we simply had to discover what all the fuss was about… I meet Rosie at home in Porthleven, eager to learn more about her career’s trajectory, recently becoming a mum and what the future holds. Rosie is refreshingly unpretentious, approachable and keen to share her story. She was raised on Bodmin Moor with a fairly Bohemian upbringing. “Mum and dad were folk musicians in the ‘70s, who travelled around Europe,” explains Rosie. “They wanted my sister and me to have a good foundation in music, so I learned piano from a young age.” Becoming a musician wasn’t so much a conscious choice as a natural development – like learning to walk. “Music has always been there, I didn’t really question it – always listening to albums, dad playing guitar… it was just a way of life.” Rosie continues: “It’s all about escapism – music is access to another world… whether that be a fond memory or an emotion recalling a specific time or place. Playing piano feels like an extension of my body – it’s intuitive.”

The talent and hard work clearly paid off, with Rosie soon enjoying some international success as lead singer of electro-pop outfit Rosie and The Goldbug, touring extensively across the UK and US, including stints supporting Cyndi Lauper. When The Goldbug disbanded, Rosie returned to Porthleven to regroup, which brings us to today, Rosie’s rebirth as a solo artist cemented with the launch of her self-titled debut solo album, recorded right here in Cornwall. “With The Goldbug, I created a world for myself to exist in. It was all about having a place to channel those theatrics. As I’ve got older, I’ve realised I don’t want to do that so much anymore. With the new album, I wanted to be more me and not hide behind a character... just be more comfortable in my own skin.”

66 CORNWALL LIVING z.CLM 55--EHM--RLS--Rosie Crow--2.00.indd 66

23/12/2016 11:31

In doing so, Rosie has served up ten portions of sleek, sophisticated synth pop, with echoes of Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper, yet asserting an entirely unique voice of her own. Showing her independent spirit, the album was crowdfunded using social media to build online momentum, with Rosie humbled by the amazing response from her fans and the wider public. In fact, the rising swell even caught the attention of Easy Action Records, which is now distributing the album.

“It’s all about escapism – music is access to another world” This latest chapter in her career has been informed by several key milestones, spanning love and loss. Rosie recently married natural world cinematographer Fionn Crow (who directed the video for the infectious new single, Stop Believing), and together they welcomed baby boy, Tiga, last summer. So, how does Rosie juggle the trials of parenthood with being a performer? Rosie laughs. “I’d have said it’d never work, but I’ve been more productive than I’ve ever been this last year. When you have such a small window to get something done, you need much more discipline to make it worthwhile – it’s now or never!” But it hasn’t all been plain sailing, as Rosie acknowledges: “I lost my best friend last year to cancer, which really shook my foundations. The realisation hits that you’re just flesh and blood, not here for long, and so you’ve got to make the most of it. I’ve become more emotionally charged. Everything is a bit more poignant. Everything I write now is definitely more

considered, more raw.” It’s always heart warming to see a musician doing things their own way, but also doing it here in Cornwall. “I’ve lived in London and New York before, but there’s nowhere like home. I love living in a busy village, being able to walk up the wrestling fields to see the view out to Rinsey with the dog, then coming back – via The Ship Inn, of course! It’s so authentic, stormwatching by the fire is a real magical experience.” And, contrary to some beliefs, Rosie is living proof that you don’t need to be in London to have a successful career. “It’s amazing how many people live down here who are Check out Rosie’s incredible well connected,” says Rosie. “And Cube new album, out now via Easy Recording is a truly world-class studio, Action Records. with an incredible producer Gareth Young at the helm.” Rosie continues: “I feel really lucky to have been well supported by the people of Cornwall – there’s some amazing people here.” And this is neatly demonstrated once again by the great reception at the recent shows with Rosie’s live band, including a storming, packed-out album launch show at the Acorn Theatre, Penzance. “I’ve gained a lot of confidence from that,” she beams. “I love the band, they’re so much fun to perform with, especially the harmonies. It’s like a cool family we’ve got now, we love hanging out.” Never one to rest on her laurels, 2017 is already shaping up to be a vintage year, with more shows in the pipelines, a limited edition 7-inch single for Record Store Day, and plans to record the next album in March. “I’m thriving at the moment,” says Rosie, with an expression that suggests both bewilderment and genuine appreciation for her situation. “Everything feels vibrant and alive!” And with much on the horizon for Rosie, we look forward to the next chapter in this exciting story.

Advice

The support you need Stephens Scown LLP has put together a guide to help people through the difficult process of divorce.

N

obody goes into a marriage believing it will end in divorce. But it is an uncomfortable reality faced by almost half of all marriages in the UK. If you’re in that situation, it can be easy to feel isolated and overwhelmed. Divorce is an emotional, draining and difficult process. But you still need a clear head as you make decisions that will affect the rest of your life. Stephens Scown LLP, which has the leading family law team in Devon and Cornwall, has produced a guide to help its clients cope with the process. Sarah Atkinson, a Senior Associate in the family law team based in Truro, says: “Our guide explains really clearly the different steps involved in separation and divorce, so that our clients know what to expect at each stage. Everyone’s circumstances are unique, but although divorce can be an upsetting process, it can also mark a fresh start and a new chapter in your life.” Stephens Scown’s guide to divorce also includes advice from clients who have been through the process. Milena was married for ten years when her world turned upside down with a separation from her husband. Milena explains: “I was totally surprised and did not see this coming. It was a bolt from the blue. “The best thing I did was tell my friends and colleagues about it right at the start. One of my friends at work had gone through a divorce five years ago and she really encouraged me to seek legal advice. I didn’t want to start the process, as it made

everything seem real and that there was no going back. But like many things, the first step was the hardest and it ended up being the best thing for me to do – I immediately got back a sense of power and control over what was happening.” So if you, or someone you know, are going through a divorce, contact Stephens Scown, obtain a copy of the divorce guide and start to feel in control again.

Advice

Making the most of your money

We speak to Financial Planning expert Matt Begley, about the best way to make tax efficient savings

F

rom this tax year, the government has introduced a greater level of flexibility with our opportunities to invest, save and reap the rewards tax-free! “Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) continue to be one of the most popular tax-efficient schemes, which along with the new freedoms in personal pensions offer tax efficient savings,” explains Matt Begley of Harris Begley. An ISA is basically a ‘wrapper’ into which you can place cash or stocks and shares up to a certain limit each year. For the 2016/17 tax year the total limit per individual is £15,240, which means that a couple could place just over £30,000 this year. Effectively any interest, income or growth on the cash or shares within the ISA is free from any personal liability to income tax or capital gains tax. (Source www.gov.uk) And from this tax year a greater level of flexibility has been introduced. Savers have now been given the freedom to take money out of their ISA and put it back in later in the year, without losing the ISA tax benefits, as long as the repayment is made in the same financial year as the withdrawal. If you already have an ISA, check that your plan provider is on board with this facility.

Personal pensions “Paying into a pension scheme will also deliver tax-efficient benefits,” says Matt. “Where it differs from an ISA is that there are significant benefits when making the contribution to your pension plan through an additional cash top-up from the government. However, unlike an ISA, it is likely that there will be some tax to pay against the retirement income, when it is eventually drawn.” Basic rate taxpayers would receive 20% tax relief – in a nutshell, this means it costs 80p to save each £1 into your pension pot. For higher and additional rate taxpayers the position is even better with 40% tax relief for the former (60p contribution to save £1) and 45% for the latter (55p to save £1).

Important information • A stocks and shares ISA is a medium to long-term investment, which aims to increase the value of the money you invest for growth or income or both. • The value of investments and the income from them can go down as well as up and you may not get back your original investment. • Past performance is not a guide to future performance.

ê BELOW Matt Begley, retirement planning expert at Harris Begley Financial Planning

• HM Revenue & Customs practice and the law relating to taxation are complex and subject to individual circumstances and changes which cannot be foreseen.

Alternative tax efficient schemes “Dependent on your attitude to risk, there are other tax-efficient schemes that are more specialised which can bring greater returns, but you have to balance that against the greater risk,” says Matt. “Whatever you opt for, do recognise that it’s not solely about being tax-efficient, as sensible as that may be... You also need to consider the income and growth potential you would like to achieve from your portfolio.” Making the right decisions about your savings and investments can seem a daunting prospect and it’s prudent to take expert advice. Harris Begley provides a free, no obligation consultation to assess your financial circumstances and to plan for your future.

myth busting

Rebecca Dunlop, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Duchy Hospital, debunks the top myths surrounding cosmetic surgery.

P

lastic surgery is the same as cosmetic surgery, right?

No, plastic surgery is any surgery performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, but usually refers to reconstructive surgery, for example, restorative surgery after a cancer operation or an accident. Cosmetic surgery on the other hand is purely aesthetic: used to enhance the appearance.

the expense and down time of surgery, there is some truth to the saying ‘you get what you paid for’. It is important for patients to have realistic expectations of what the different procedures can achieve so that they can choose the surgery or procedure that is right for them.

Cosmetic surgery does not leave scars, does it?

Men don’t have cosmetic surgery, do they?

Sadly, all surgery that involves a cut through the skin will leave a permanent scar. However, scars differ from person to person depending on age, skin type, location of the scar and the genetic tendency to scarring. Scars take about 18 months to mature but can continue to improve in appearance long after this. There are also various types of scar therapies available that can reduce scarring.

Why shouldn’t men want to look their best as well? Men frequently consult for various surgeries and facial anti-aging. In fact, men now account for 9% of cosmetic surgery operations in the UK, with the number of cosmetic surgery procedures on men doubling in the past decade.

Cosmetic surgery is always carried out by plastic surgeons, isn’t it?

Of course, there are many fine surgeons in London, but techniques and equipment are similar across the UK and dedicated surgeons who practice in cosmetic surgery will continually educate themselves and update their skills. Plastic surgeons operate all over the country and you can find your nearest one by looking on the BAPRAS or BAAPS websites. Having surgery closer to home has many advantages; from close proximity for follow-up appointments to saving money on travel and overnight stays out-of-county, it’s a win-win!

Currently in the UK, the words ‘surgeon’ and ‘cosmetic’ do not guarantee any particular training; therefore patients should do their own rigorous research before going ahead. To save you some trouble, all cosmetic surgeons at Duchy Hospital are thoroughly checked.

Surgery isn’t necessary anymore due to non-invasive techniques, is it? It is true that there has been an explosion of minimal and non-invasive techniques and when in good hands these procedures do have their place in certain patients. However, in many patients these techniques will not be effective enough to achieve the desired results and are usually not as long lasting as surgery. So, while it can be tempting to avoid

Charity

A festive feast

To celebrate a fantastic 2016, Made for Life headed to Penventon Park Hotel for its annual Christmas lunch.

words by:

Dan Warden

T

his year has been an incredible one for the Made for Life Foundation. Over the last 12 months, workshops ranging from the benefits of remedial massage therapy to the importance of artistic expression have played a key role in helping those faced with the adverse effects of cancer cope with their overwhelming circumstances. While the foundation helps those struggling to come to terms with their illness through such workshops, perhaps the most important role that Made For Life plays is bringing people together who can share their experiences and support one and other in a way that others who’ve not had to face such adversity simply can’t. On 8th December, to celebrate a fantastic year, Made for Life held its annual Christmas lunch. Manager, Juliette Hathway, says: “I would like to say a huge thank you to the Penventon Park Hotel for supporting the charity. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious, making it the perfect venue! “It was lovely to be among lots of very special people who have helped make my job a pleasure this year.

I am inspired by each and every one, so to all of them, thank you.” More recently, the team followed the lead of Kelly, from Walk Kernow Nordic Walking, who provided a great morning for the Made for Life ladies. Having been pleasantly surprised at how easy the walk was (not the route march that they were expecting!), they’re all very much looking forward to the next walking workshop. After all, what better for one’s health and wellbeing that being out in the fresh air, breathing in the stunning scenery and enjoying pleasant company? Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but no less tough for those fi ghting cancer and it’s workshops like the Nordic Walk, as well as Christmas lunch get-togethers and everything else that Made for Life does throughout the year, that make the hard times just that little bit easier. For some, that can make the world of difference!
