2017 is off and running, and it could prove to be an interesting year!

Many people are forecast to make some life-changing decisions; maybe finally making the move to live in Cornwall, or possibly starting with a small bolt hole by the sea (page 16). How about a luxury lodge (page 44) to call home for all those staycations we are destined to be taking more of this year? So, we have a bumper crop of property to tempt you this month, whether it’s just to dream over or finally make that move. And I meet designer Tom Raffield, of that beautiful steam-bent wooden house from Grand Designs, to talk about his work and life in Cornwall (page 56). There are plenty of places to stay and ideas for dining out on Valentine’s Day. Or for something a bit different how about a day at the races at Exeter Racecourse (page 4)? And we offer some interior design and home improvement ideas alongside a good helping of art and gallery news. Jason and I describe our wonderful evening out at Goonhilly for a live broadcast of Radio 3’s flagship programme In Tune with the ebullient Sean Rafferty (page 72). And, as a special treat for this issue, we’ve included our magazine for families, Kids Love Cornwall Living, offering a recipe, book reviews, and ideas to help you through the half-term hols (page 61). So whatever is going on in the world outside, grab a cuppa and the latest issue of Cornwall Living for all things Cornwall. Enjoy,

The biggest of its kind in the south west, the Travel Show is a great place to chat face to face with leading experts in the industry and is packed with cinema presentations, on-the-day only offers and, this year, a chance to win an amazing cruise for two with Fred Olsen!

Now’s the time to enjoy a winter warmer at the Lemon Arms

To be in with a chance of winning you must attend the show. However, with travel experts just waiting to introduce you to a world of travelling experiences, why wouldn’t you?

During these colder months, after chilly afternoons spent exploring the reaches of Cornwall’s coastline, we look for places in which to shelter from the elements and warm ourselves with fresh, hearty food. Fortunately, winter warmers are at the forefront of the winter menu at the Lemon Arms, Mylor. The spicy sausage, smoked bacon and bean casserole with freshly baked bread, for instance, is a great reward for having braved the weather!

So, why not make a note in your diary? Sunday 12th March, 10.30am to 3.30pm – a chance to broaden your horizons! To find out more or to guarantee your seat at your chosen presentation, visit www.newellstravel.co.uk/travel-show

Mylor Bridge is ideal for those looking to enjoy a brisk stroll – simply head around the creek and admire the little sailing hub in all its bobbing glory, before settling down next to a roaring fire as you wait for your lunch. Expect generous portion sizes, local, seasonal ingredients as well as excellent service. But don’t take our word for it – go see for yourself! We assure you, you won’t be disappointed. Dream

homes words by:

Mandy Milano

We take a look at four stunning Cornish homes…

W

hether you are looking to move far from the madding crowd, enjoy stunning sea views or move into the heart of a bustling harbour town, Cornwall has it all. Three of these you could own, but Tom Raffield’s steam bent house is here only to dream about – I can’t see Tom or Danie moving from their woodland paradise anytime soon. Not everyone hankers to live right by the sea; many love to be near but relish the peace and quiet of their own bit of countryside. We found Home Farm – even the name speaks sanctuary and family – on the market with Savills. It is a wonderful traditional farmhouse nestled into the landscape with stunning gardens for pootling in and paddocks for ponies, a few alpacas or a chicken or two. With barns and outbuildings, there is room for the whole family’s belongings: space for surfboards, boats, maybe a vintage tractor to restore (okay I am getting too Archers now!), but certainly plenty of space to indulge a passion for vintage cars or maybe install a pottery.

“Winnie the Pooh should have come from such a house”

More about the farmhouse later… before I even saw this wonderful home there was the address. Just imagine the invites to parties, birthdays, Sunday lunch and so on: “You are invited to… RSVP. Home Farm, Withielgoose, Cornwall.” Oh, what an address! Home Farm, Withielgoose… Wind in the Willows or Winnie the Pooh should have come from such a place. And who would not relish the thought of returning home to Home Farm, Withielgoose? And the house lives up to its name. The farmhouse is a beautiful example of a traditional Cornish country home; lots of character blends with modern upgrades to create a comfortable welcoming interior. Facing south, the house looks out over its wonderfully stocked front garden and the delightful kitchen/breakfast room has two sets of French doors out to the secluded outdoor area. The kitchen has a new Aga, the sitting room a cosy wood burner; there are window seats for whiling away some time, a separate snug and a study, as well as outside office and games room above one of the barns. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, two with en suite, while the master has its own dressing room. Situated in the heart of the pretty rural parish of Withiel, the area has lots of footpaths and bridleways to explore

Thoughts about the property market.

including the Saints Way, an ancient pilgrimage route which runs through countryside from Padstow to Fowey. And when you need the beach and the coast, Rock and Padstow are nearby with some of the best sandy beaches in north Cornwall… and some of the best food! Home Farm, Withielgoose is a dream country home just waiting for the right family to move in!

SAVILLS

“Going in to 2017 the indicators for the prime property market in Cornwall look to be quite positive. Unlike the last two years, there is no forecast of a General Election, change in stamp duty or referendum to act as a distraction, improving confidence and increasing stability. The weak pound since the Brexit vote has heralded an influx of investors looking for property in prime London, which has had a swift knock-on effect for prime properties in other parts of the country, most noticeably over the last three months of 2016. Perhaps most importantly, the FTSE 100 continues to break records, and the correlation between the performance of the stock market and levels of interest in prime Cornish property is clear. All eyes will be on how the markets react to Article 50 being triggered but trying to predict exactly how would be misguided as the second half of 2016 showed us.” David Jenkin, Savills.

Another aptly named property, from Millerson, is Atlantic Watch in Carbis Bay. If you are looking for a gorgeous bolt-hole overlooking the ocean then this could be for you. In a prime seafront position this modern home is designed around its 180 degree views out to St Ives bay, across to Godrevy Lighthouse and beyond to Trevose Head. Who couldn’t fall for such stunning sea views, but throw in the iconic Godrevy Lighthouse keeping you company at night and the deal is done. Just about every room has seaviews and access to a balcony. The fully-fitted, uber modern kitchen has French doors leading out to a balcony with sea views; the perfect spot for al fresco dining or just the morning coffee. The living room has large windows and a sliding door onto a Juliet balcony taking in the panoramic views. Downstairs there are two spacious bedrooms, both with sea views. Oh, and did I mention the terrace garden with sunken hot tub? Imagine relaxing with a glass of bubbly in your hot tub, after a long day on the beach and just gazing out over the Atlantic. Winter or summer, for fine weather or some Atlantic storm watching, this has to be the perfect spot and it certainly makes the most of its views and that stunning St Ives light.

MILLERSON

"enjoy stunning sea views or move into the heart of a bustling harbour town"

And… who doesn’t love Padstow? With its fabulous bustling harbour, galleries, shops and restaurants… renowned for Rick Stein’s famous Seafood Restaurant. This is a rare opportunity to buy your very own little bit of heaven in Padstow. Treskiddy, for sale with Jackie Stanley, is a spacious character cottage with oodles of contemporary style located in the heart of Padstow’s Old Town and conservation area and within a short walk of the harbour and shops. Just arrive, park the car and go by foot! Whether you are looking for a holiday let investment or a cottage to enjoy for yourselves this charming home has plenty on offer. Downstairs has a spacious open-plan kitchen/dining/sitting room, perfect for family gatherings; plus a conservatory with French doors onto the sunny, south-facing, walled rear garden, which provides a private sanctuary away from the bustle of town. There are three bedrooms; there’s a balcony on the second floor to take in the views over the estuary, and the en suite master bedroom on the top floor has stunning views out over the rooftops to the estuary, Rock and Porthilly. This is a characterful gem of a house, beautifully finished and ready to move into for a spring and summer in Padstow.

ì MAIN Tom and Danie Raffield’s home, as featured recently on Grand Designs

And finally, one that money can’t buy you right now… or anytime soon. But we just love Tom and Danielle Raffield’s fabulous steam-bent wood clad home set amongst six acres of ancient woodland in west Cornwall. The ambitious project caught the eye of presenter Kevin McCloud and his team at Grand Designs who filmed the

“I just thought, ‘Wow we did that’ and that’s a pretty amazing feeling” whole project. It was one of Grand Designs’ most acclaimed episodes of 2016 and I have never seen Kevin McCloud, who can at times be quite damning, more enthusiastic and complimentary about a house… he absolutely loved it! It’s not hard to understand why. The house nestles into its woodland setting all curves and pleasing lines. Tom and Danielle bought the run-down, listed gamekeepers cottage five years ago with the idea of building a family home. Showcasing their design skills the new timber clad extension is concealed behind, and linked to, the original stone cottage and outbuildings, which have also been restored. The interior is also wood clad and features lots of their fabulous steam-bent furniture and lighting. It’s peaceful, tranquil and Danie adds: “Sitting at the outdoor table and looking back at the finished house for the first time was like having an out-of-body experience. I just thought, ‘Wow we did that’ and that’s a pretty amazing feeling.”

The

Wild West

We hear from Anna Sharp at Savills about their thoughts on the recent surge of interest in west Cornwall.

A

t a glance, the Penwith peninsula in far west Cornwall is wild and windswept, with a dramatic coastline shaped by the powerful Atlantic and with far-reaching, panoramic views in every direction. Jutting defiantly into the jaws of the Atlantic, it is where Cornwall is at its most Cornish. But scratch below the surface and you will discover that the area is host to far more than just cliffs and echoes of Poldark. Recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, west Cornwall boasts white-sand beaches with world-class surf, scheduled monuments and World Heritage sites, and an ever expanding, award-winning food scene, including restaurants from Michelin starred chefs and food festivals. The internationally recognised arts and culture community has been bolstered by the presence of the Tate in St Ives and the Minack Theatre, with smaller, independent galleries, film houses and Open Studios abundant across the area.

One of the special things about west Cornwall is that there are parts of it where you really can get away from the crowds, even in the middle of summer. It is possible to feel like you are completely away from the real world, sometimes going for hours without seeing a soul. The team at Savills have witnessed a surge of interest and demand for properties in west Cornwall, with recent sales in St Ives, Marazion, Mousehole, and more rural west Penwith, proving that the attraction of the ‘Wild West’ has been reaching beyond just those in the know. There is a timelessness to the area, with large swathes of unspoilt, untamed countryside and some of the most exceptional properties in the county, allowing an escape from the increasingly frenetic, on-demand nature of modern life.

INFORMATION Complex of newly converted traditional barns Detached two-bedroom barn Pair of semi-detached one-bedroom barns Private courtyard and off-road parking Far-reaching cliff and sea views En-suite master bedrooms

Trethevy Barns Set on the coast with stunning cliff and sea views you’ll find a beautiful collection of high specification residential barn conversions within a lovely courtyard setting.

S

ituated comfortably in the coastal hamlet of Trethevy and conveniently close to the historic village of Tintagel and the picturesque harbour village of Boscastle, this idyllic complex of newly converted barns is an ideal opportunity. The peaceful complex is positioned within a slightly elevated spot with excellent views towards the cliffs of Bossiney Cove and the ocean beyond. The three properties have been superbly and thoughtfully converted so that they boast modern and comfortable styles while retaining the character and charm of their history. The largest of the barns, The Pottery, is detached with a large open-plan living space on the ground floor. This room boasts a bright, spacious feel due to the minimalistic décor and the complete wall of glass and a set of French doors. The kitchen continues this modern style with oak cabinets and black granite work surfaces that continue round into a breakfast bar, perfect for easy socialising while cooking. The first floor features two double bedrooms, the master with some lovely views towards the sea and cliffs and the second currently set up as a twin. During colder months underfloor central heating on the ground floor and radiators on the first floor warm this cosy home, while warmer days can be spent enjoying some al fresco dining in the sheltered and private courtyard outside.

The Mill and The Grainstone are onebedroom properties ideal for couples, although there is the facility to make the two properties into one with the use of an interconnecting door. Each has an open-plan ground floor comprising of a lounge/dining area, a fully fitted modern kitchen and an en-suite master bedroom, all designed to continue the modern and airy feeling seen throughout the complex. The Mill is slightly bigger and boasts a Juliette balcony to the side, which offers wonderful views towards the ocean. Trethevy Barns are superbly located for exploring north Cornwall; with surfing, walking the coast and visiting the many stunning beaches being just some of the primary attractions. A footpath to the St Nectans Glen Waterfall is on the doorstep. Trethevy Barns are to be sold as an up and running five-star holiday let business, details of which are available upon request. Jackie Stanley advises viewing at the earliest chance to get a full sense of the incredible opportunity this property offers.

Nancassick Farm Cottage An unmissable opportunity to discover a beautiful detached cottage settled amidst stretching country views while remaining close to bustling Truro.

INFORMATION Four bedrooms Conservatory Parking for several cars Potential for the addition of an annexe Adjoining paddock Beautiful established garden Close proximity to Truro

I

t is rare that a cottage with land in such a special location on the south Cornish coast comes to the open market. Nancassick Farm Cottage lies within a short distance of the Fal Estuary and is only four miles from Truro city centre. It boasts serene country walks on the doorstep and with the picturesque National Trust gardens at Trelissick and Loe Beach close at hand, you’ll be in want of nothing during your days out. The adjoining paddock is ideal for equestrian use or hobby farming and extends to just over three acres, enclosed within a natural hedge boundary with fine country views. Nancassick Farm Cottage is a real gem, combining a fabulous location with countryside views and level land. This is a delightful stone and slate roof building dating from the 19th century. Most impressively it has remained predominantly in its original form, the only notable difference being the addition of a conservatory at the rear which is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the moment. Internally, the house has been upgraded and improved over the years, offering homely accommodation with original features including beamed ceilings and a fireplace now fitted with a multi-fuel stove. The sitting

room, dining room and kitchen all boast a cosy and welcoming feel, with the kitchen looking out upon the charming garden. The first floor is home to four bedrooms, each with a unique element of style and comfort. There is scope for a self-contained annexe to be built as bedroom four is accessed by a separate staircase, making this lovely home customisable to your own bespoke needs. Outside you’ll find a driveway providing parking for several cars with space for a boat or caravan, alongside a detached stone barn which is currently utilised as a garage. The stunning enclosed garden, where there are several areas in which to sit out and also pedestrian access into the adjoining field, is well established and perfect for children and pets. Sunny days at Nancassick Farm Cottage will be spent in complete tranquillity and ease.

P

assivhaus or ‘passive house’ is the fastest growing energy performance standard in the world; with its voluntary but rigorous testing, it is the perfect way to feel secure that your home has the best ecofootprint possible. The Passivhaus standard’s strengths lie in the simplicity of its approach. Passivhaus buildings provide a high level of occupant comfort while using very little energy for heating and cooling. They are built with meticulous attention to detail and thorough design and construction and will be certified through an exacting quality assurance process, so you are guaranteed quality when looking at a passive home. Luckily, if this ideal, energy-saving home sounds like it might be for you Percy Williams & Sons Limited have recently appointed Abode to market phase two of the awardwinning Fairglen eco homes, located on the western fringes of Hayle. Aiming for Passivhaus accreditation, these high quality, three bedroom houses are the only such development

in the area with an A rated EPC. The attention to detail within the entire construction and finishes process is second to none and really must be seen to be believed. The use of the MVHR heat recovery system and triple glazing are just the start; what you don’t see is much of the hidden technologies encompassed within these amazing designs, which extend beyond exceptional levels of insulation. Prior to construction, a ‘wish list’ from previously interested parties was considered, which included a decent ensuite, a study/snug and a separate utility. To keep the homes up-to-date they also include a range of connectivity provisions and the top quality kitchens have a Mary Berry NEFF oven and ceramic induction hob, complemented with feature panelling and yet more integrated appliances. In addition, PV cells will generate free electricity, invaluable in building a sustainable future. Some plots also have upgradeable electrical vehicle points adjacent to the two private parking spaces. With prices starting from just £265,000 for a mid-terraced home, this is the ultimate opportunity to find a house that thinks of it all, so you don’t have to.

Home

A smarter home We take a look at smart technology for the home in the hope of making smart a little bit simpler.

W

ith more people considering smart technology for their homes, it’s easy to find yourself inundated with a myriad of devices to choose from, with an accompanying confusion-induced headache to boot! A recent study, conducted by the online design service Houzz, suggests that nearly 50% of people in the US who were considering renovations or upgrades to their property chose to do so using smart technologies. A system or device has smart capability if it can be monitored and/or controlled from a mobile device and/or a computer. So the big question is, why are people adopting these technologies so eagerly? Nearly half of renovating homeowners are incorporating smart systems or devices during their renovation projects, with one in ten upgraded homes having five or more smart devices after renovation. But it doesn’t stop with the number of devices, as they are more likely to report high levels of satisfaction with their new smart homes compared to those installing devices without mobile connectivity, with particular reference to home entertainment systems. But with smart devices covering a wide range of areas, it’s important to consider which aspect of your home you would be interested in updating. Security and safety were particularly high up in the survey. Seeking freedom to monitor or control their home security remotely is a big motivating

factor for those adopting smart security gadgets, providing convenience alongside peace of mind. Using smart lighting systems not only improves the ambience of the home with convenient scene settings but offers large energy savings and provides ‘away from home’ occupancy mimicking as a deterrent, another effective security feature. Similarly, you can improve energy usage again by gaining remote monitoring and access to a smart thermostat, ensuring that no matter where you are your home will be running smoothly and cost-effectively. If you are thinking of planning a system then talk to an expert to guide you through what is an ever-increasing set of choices and jargon. The Pyramid Group are an award winning AV specialist based in Plymouth and are members of CEDIA, the international trade association for over 3,700 member companies worldwide, who design, manufacture, and install technology for the home. Appointing a trained CEDIA specialist will help ensure that you receive impartial advice, gain a better understanding of the options available, avoid costly mistakes and make your system work for you.

Drawing inspiration from her travels and love of textiles, we meet Eve Hughes of Eve Hughes Interior Design.

W

ith more than 15 years’ experience of understanding both her trade and her clients’ needs, Eve Hughes of Eve Hughes Interior Design is a highly motivated individual with an inherent flair for design, colour and attention to detail, drawing inspiration from her and husband, Dan’s shared passion for travel. With her in-built talent for interior design, Eve always knew this was the career path for her and, after four years of studying the subject and nearly nine years at a Trurobased soft furnishings store, Eve decided to venture forth alone in 2010, setting up her own interior design company; the rest, as they say, is history! Offering a professional service to her clients, Eve specialises in bespoke curtains, blinds, soft furnishings and wall coverings and manages projects from simple revamps to large-scale overhauls. Her aim is simple – to expertly reflect her clients’ personal styles and tastes. Whilst covering the south west, Eve also works in London and across the UK, helping homes and boutique hotels achieve their dream look. In fact, she’s even ventured as far as Austria to bring her dazzling touch to a home in need!

Offering complete fitting and installation of a range that includes furniture, upholstery, accessories and styling products, the service offered is truly a comprehensive one. The best part is, no job is too small; even if you simply want advice on a new blind for your bedroom, you can rely on Eve’s expertise to make the right choice! Get in touch to arrange an introductory meeting, either at your home or at Eve’s studio. If you’re working from afar on a second home, fear not – arrangements can be made accordingly to accommodate for this! After a discussion surrounding ideas, budget and the general feel of the space, Eve will put together a visual presentation in the form of samples and images, along with any costings. And, throughout any project, you’ll be kept informed and in the loop, so you can be sure that the finished product is one that you’ve both agreed upon and are more than satisfied with! So, why not give Eve Hughes a call and, for once, let someone else do the hard work?

We catch up with West Country cottage agency, Helpful Holidays, which has just added 22 new properties to its portfolio.

W

ith an impressive collection of around 700 West Country cottages already on its books, this family-run agency continues to go from strength to strength. In fact, Helpful Holidays recently cleaned up at the prestigious British Travel Awards, winning two customer service awards and ranking in the top three UK medium-sized cottage agencies! So, what sets Helpful Holidays apart from the crowd? With friendly support, flexible terms, local knowledge and experience at the core of what the team does, as well as a massive range of properties to suit all needs, you can be sure to find what you’re looking for, whether it’s a cosy bolthole or a place to gather the whole gang. Take Bonny Alva, for instance – a roomy new addition to the team’s portfolio, overlooking St Austell Bay. With a golf course nearby for those partial to a leisurely nine holes, as well as four bedrooms and a tranquil veranda with 180-degree sea views, it’s sure not to disappoint. Then there’s Orchard Lodge, just 800 yards from Boscastle’s harbour. With close proximity to the coast and five bedrooms of beautifully finished accommodation, this property is an ideal base from which to lace up your boots and head out exploring. Perhaps being close to the famous surf break of Praa Sands is your idea of an escape. The Hayloft, just two miles from Praa Sands and equal distance from the rugged mining landscape of Rinsey Cove, promises to put you in prime position to explore some of the finest spots on the south coast.

Would a combination of quietude and access to seemingly untouched areas of the Cornish coast be more your cup of tea? If so, consider Treveth – a bright and airy retreat on the edge of St Agnes, also a popular surf spot. Within easy reach of the beach and the local pub, Treveth is perfect for a quiet escape from the stresses of everyday life. So, why not let this impressive holiday cottage agency live up to its name? If you have a property and would like a free appraisal of its letting potential, or if you’d simply like to find out more about the company’s huge portfolio from the Helpful Holidays experts, be sure to get in touch.

ou’re busily packing for a muchanticipated getaway; bubbling with excitement about new pastures, adventures and the delicious respite from 6am alarms! The only problem: a pair of big, sad eyes right by your suitcase asking where you’re going. Somehow it just doesn’t seem right to leave a beloved family member behind while you enjoy all the benefits of a well-earned rest. In the past, taking your dog away with you on holiday often meant being cooped up together in a lacklustre caravan park or bare-boned B&B. But this needn’t be the case. At Karma St Martin’s, a new pure breed of luxury hotel, your four-legged friend will be welcomed as a true guest and treated like the leader of the pack they are. Karma St Martin’s has been voted among the ‘Top 10 Dog Friendly Hotels in the UK’ and Cornwall Tourism presented the hotel with a ‘Best Dog Friendly Business Award’ in 2016; fast-tracking the hotel to the 2017 South West and National Finals. So, why bring your best barking buddy with you? People who hang out with their pets tend to have a lower stress level by the end of the day. Interacting with your dog lowers the levels of cortisol, a stress-related hormone that can lead to high cholesterol levels, hypertension and depression.

A New Scientist magazine study found that people who interacted with their pets for only a few minutes a day saw dramatic increases in hormones like oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin; chemicals associated with happiness and wellbeing. Having your pet close by can also reduce your blood pressure, in addition to decreasing loneliness, lowering cholesterol levels and encouraging physical activity; dog owners regularly devote time to walking and actively caring for their animals. Pets are also a fantastic conversation-starter. Otherwise shy people can become more engaged when talking to potential new holiday friends about their pets. Of course, the main reason is the opportunity to spend some quality time with your favourite fur ball as you both enjoy experiencing a delighting new place. I’m sure you and your canine companion are eagerly waiting to find out exactly what to expect during your visit to this doggy haven! Four-legged guests are immediately welcomed with a VIP (very important pet) registration form, a welcome treat, bowls and blankets; the perfect puppy package. You can then spoil them rotten with tempting treats from the canine-friendly menu, prepared by Karma’s Kanine Kitchen. The pet-loving team can provide dog-sitting services to keep your dog entertained whilst their human companions enjoy a nourishing therapy at the soulful Karma spa or befriend the local seal colony on a snorkelling trip. Of course, there are plenty of activities you can undertake with your furry friends. Walkies are an intrinsic part of any stay at Karma St Martin’s; with beautiful dog-friendly beaches only a ball’s throw away. Treat your pooch with the Access All Areas Pass, where your pampered pet, who has undoubtedly now become accustomed to living in the lap of luxury, can rest easy knowing that they may accompany their human into the hotel’s sumptuous guestrooms, restaurant and wine bar. The knowledgeable front office team can guide guests on the best transport options when travelling with a pet, be it by land, air or sea. They will even check the availability of the RSPCA-approved animal boxes on the local Skybus airplanes. So, why not join the growing legion of canny dog owners who are taking their best friend away on holiday, and book your next pooch perfect stay at Karma St Martin’s. Using the finest, fresh Cornish produce to create a classic, brasserie style menu that’s full of subtle flavours and second-to-none presentation, Head Chef, Andrew Dudley and his talented team strive to constantly serve excellent food from an ever-changing menu. The proof, it would seem, is in the pudding, as Andrew shares the recipe for his simply sensational, triple-layered chocolate brownie.

ucked away amidst 22 acres, and surrounded with the undulating hills of the Lizard peninsula, sits this outstanding family-run pub. The views on offer are truly breathtaking, turning this already exceptional eatery into a true hidden gem. The atmosphere as you walk through the door quickly envelops you with a relaxed and inviting feel, making it an enjoyable experience from start to finish. This family foodie destination, which was originally a cowshed, offers a traditional stone barn feel with fresh, contemporary notes. Wheal Dream is run with warmth by the Clark family, who spend every day pouring heart and soul into their thriving business. In fact, Barry and Naomi are so taken with their business that they have bought it twice, first in 2001, and again in 2010. The adjoining golf course was then bought in 2014 by Barry’s brother Neil and his wife Jane, and is now run by his other brother Jim and his wife Gemma. “Our passion for the business, the produce, the location and our supporters runs deep,” says Barry. “It really is a family affair. We’re all about being collaborative with local food producers, providing a gold-star service, and creating happy memories for our visitors with all we have to offer.” This dedication to local produce is apparent in every rustic ciabatta, catch of the day and meat from the grill, all of which make up a mouth-watering display of homecooked dishes. Pop by on a Sunday to experience the legendary Wheal Dream Sunday Carvery, which boasts delicious meat provided by Dales Family Butchers and the award for ‘Best Carvery in Cornwall, 2016’.

They have also put great energy into creating an enviable outside environment, perfect for marquee events with bespoke catering and hog roasts. In fact, the team specialises in outdoor catering, their events motto being simply ‘your day, your way’. “We have some exciting plans to ensure we are a growing family resort. Not only do we have a nine-hole golf course, but our sports guru, Neil, is branching us into football golf – a brilliantly entertaining sport – while installing some high-end glamping facilities, so guests will be able to stay, play, eat and drink to their heart’s content,” continues Barry. And what could be a better way to spend quality time with family and friends than enjoying everything that Wheal Dream has to offer.

beach

We catch up with Beach Retreats to find out how visitors like to spend their holidays along the stunning Cornish coast.

ì ABOVE Forging family memories ê BELOW The stunning Atlantic View

T

he beaches in Cornwall are varied in size and shape. From intimate coves to four-mile stretches of sand, there are countless spots to discover and soak-up the sea views. Truly inspiring results were found when the team at Beach Retreats asked guests to name their favourite beach in the county. The number of beaches recommended was staggering and came from more than 80 votes in total. The votes ranged from the popular sands of St Ives, Fistral and Looe to obscure places such as Tregantle Beach, Lankidden Cove and Bossiney Haven. The survey highlights the number of beaches along the coastline; after all, you are never more than 20 miles from the sea in Cornwall. All the beaches seem intriguing and well-worth visiting with a little help from Google.

Wide expanses of sand on the north Cornwall coast, framed by towering cliffs and the perpetual movement of waves, contrast the sheltered, but no less pretty, coves to the south. Spend long summer days exploring rockpools teeming with wildlife, while in the winter watch the power and majesty of a rolling storm driving waves onto cliffs and sea defences. With so much choice and seasonal change, it’s inspiring to see how visitors spend their time on the coast. The traditional view of a British beach holiday has long since gone. While it’s still possible to claim a deckchair, windbreaker and set up camp for the day, beach behaviour has evolved and has created an exciting Cornish seaside culture. Today’s family memories are formed from rockpooling, that first surf lesson and a shareable selfie taken atop a cliff footpath with the coastline disappearing off into the horizon. While rockpooling is a year-round adventure, it is best enjoyed in the summer when marine life is flourishing. The best rockpooling happens on calm, sunny days

52 CORNWALL LIVING CLM 56--ED--Beach Retreats--2.00.indd 2

during low tide, where you’ll discover crabs, anemones, and limpets, amongst other species. Just be sure to follow the seashore code and take photographs and not animals. Getting active and being in the water is one of the most exhilarating ways to enjoy the coastline. Surfing is very well established on the north coast, with plenty of surf schools for newbies and hire for everyone who can’t fit their kit in the car. There’s also a lot more to watersports these days, with kitesurfing, bodyboarding and the serene stand-up paddleboarders gliding adjacent to the curve of the shore. Wild swimming is on the rise, and is easy to participate in; just be sure to be safe with whichever activity calls to you. Back on dry land, the South West Coast Path is one of Cornwall’s jewels, mapping out the beaches and providing the right position to take that ‘wow’ photo for Facebook or Instagram. The opportunity to try coastal running is popular with guests, swapping the bustling city centres and parks for undulating and inspiring coastal footpaths. It’s good for the body and joints too, being softer underfoot than the pavement. If you want to cover a few more miles, coastal cycling is a great way to see Cornwall. Hire a bicycle and pick a route away from the tourist hubs to discover a hidden cove and complete tranquillity.

We’ve done well to get this far without discussing food in Cornwall. It’s no longer a case of defending packed lunches from sand and seagulls; beach barbeques are the way to finish off the day. Pick up some local produce from a farm shop and set up for a lazy evening watching the changing colours as the sunsets, before washing it down with Cornish cider or apple juice. Beach Retreats specialises in self-catering holiday lets within walking distance of a stunning Cornish beach, complete with contemporary beach-chic interiors and good local amenities. You can contact the team directly for letting and investment advice, or simply to book your spot on the sand.

FRESH FOOD I

As we pine for the warming touch of the summer sun, spend an evening or two enjoying the welcoming setting of a traditional Cornish pub at the Turks Head.

t might still be winter, but what could be better than exploring the breathtaking coast of west Cornwall on a brisk yet bright day before settling down for a freshly prepared, traditional meal to warm the heart and soul. In Penzance, there is one particular pub that beckons me to its cosy atmosphere, which is steeped in history and legend, and that is the Turks Head. Long before earning the Taste of the West gold award in 2016, the Turks Head was the watering hole of pirates and smugglers. Luckily, the guests that frequent this fantastic haunt now are slightly more civilised! Even though you can still clearly imagine how the pub would have looked 750 years ago, now when you cross the threshold you are met with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, along with a choice of perfectly prepared meals, instead of a pirate brawl. All of the food, which is prepared by Masterchef semi-finalist Lee Groves, is made using the freshest local produce available to ensure that you really are experiencing the full taste that Cornwall

has to offer. In fact, if you really want to immerse yourself in Cornish cuisine, you can attend one of the special gourmet evenings, at which Lee Groves creates a delicious and meticulously planned menu for you to enjoy. Or if you fancy something a little more laid back, 2017 at the Turks Head will see fantastic garden parties, where you can unwind under the new and wonderfully warm, heated Jumbrella and tuck into a mouth-watering barbeque. At Easter, when the beautiful Cornish sun rises and we no longer have a need for heated Jumbrellas, the Turks Head team will be introducing their enticing summer menu. Of course, if you are like me and cannot wait to see what new and exciting dishes they have in store, you can peruse the Valentine’s menu in the meantime and share a meal with that special someone; you’ll even be greeted with a glass of free bubbly on arrival! So, if you want to spend some quality time with friends and family while enjoying expertly prepared meals, a glass of fine wine or a pint of proper Cornish ale, then the Turks Head should definitely be next on your list. The pub even hosts monthly quiz nights, the perfect excuse for indulging in some fun and fresh food!

Inspired by nature Designer Tom Raffield discusses his passion for great, sustainable design and the ancient art of steam bending!

love Grand Designs on Channel 4 and after featuring some of Tom Raffield’s fabulous pieces in a recent issue I was just a tad excited to finally meet him. The house (or extension) that Tom and his wife Danie designed and built featured on one of the best ever episodes of Grand Designs in 2016, so I was ready to be impressed even by their modern wooden-clad building. And I was, but in a deeper and more fundamental way… because the building is not bold and showy; in fact, the first thing you really notice is the

fairytale, stone built gamekeeper’s cottage… it’s absolutely stunning and would make the perfect back-drop for Hansel and Gretel. The new extension with the wood already silvering and softening in colour against its woodland backdrop is also perfect, settling and nestling into the background rather than dominating. Its curves and lines follow the contours of the hill and trees around it. This is so much better than the photos! Tom agrees. “In 100 years’ time, we hope that visitors will still note the beauty and craftsmanship in the stonework of the cottage and then see the same in the woodwork of the extension.” The house is equally

gorgeous inside, with wood paneling on the walls and Tom’s beautiful furniture and lighting. Afterwards, we take a quick look around outside with all its little sheds and outbuildings; a hive of activity of bending wood and assembling lights and furniture, somehow reminiscent of Santa’s workshops! As Tom points out on the way round, everything is made here: each stage of a piece made and finished by hand… and I so want something made here with its sprinkling of a little woodland magic dust! Tom studied design at Falmouth University. “It really was the only place for me to study; although born in Devon and growing up on Exmoor, I love Falmouth for its atmosphere, art and culture. And I love Cornwall, surrounded by its seascape it feels like you are on the edge of the world sometimes with the wind and storms; for a designer it has this wonderful sense of space; it feels like there are no boundaries.” He grins sheepishly and pours the tea. It was whilst studying that he discovered the ancient art of steam bending wood. And that, so they say, was that. “It’s an incredibly sustainable way of working with wood. The steam bending itself is very low energy and you need none of the glues and nasties that go into making veneers. And you see the real wood and grain; the designs work with the wood. We want to make things that will become the heirlooms of the future. It’s not about fashion and trends, it’s about

designing classics that will never feel dated. That’s real sustainability… buying something once that will last a lifetime and still be desirable.” It’s easy to catch Tom’s enthusiasm and passion for his subject, it’s the driving force behind everything he and Danie do. He is also rightly proud of the business. He employs about 20 people and works closely with local colleges to develop apprenticeships. “Our first apprentice now runs the workshop and our second apprentice works on new designs with me. Growing the team is part of being sustainable for me, we have kept all our staff.” And there are plenty of plans for the future, extending the range of furniture they make, moving into garden furniture and they are going to sell panels of steam bent wood for the exterior and interior of houses. Evening is approaching through the woods and I need to let Tom get on. He looks around his woods and workshops as he leads me out. “Danie and I are incredibly lucky to have all this,” he tells me. “We are doing exactly what we want in a place we love with a team of people we love!” Something he said to me earlier comes back as I climb into my car. “If you have an idea and can create something beautiful born from passion and belief… it will probably be good!” And this is very, very good!

IT’S ADVENTURE TIME Having spent the last 21 years dedicating their time to providing families with a memorable day out, Kidzworld looks forward to 2017 and another year of family fun.

I

t’s a cold and wintery day outside and for some reason the children don’t fancy an exhilarating walk along the Cornish coast. So what to do? There must be a way of getting them out of the house and doing something engaging and active! Get them away from the screens, into the car and take them to the award-winning Kidzworld, the perfect place for children of all ages to spend a day getting stuck into a myriad of fun and exciting activities! They can plunge into the mega ball pool, test their driving skills on the dodgems, climb to their hearts’ content on the SkyTrail and take aim in LaserTag. Or if these don’t take their fancy they can try out some rollerskating, the sensory room and the cannon ball arena. Honestly, with so many choices one day might not be enough! For the younger participants, there is also an under fours area, complete with sofas so you can sit back and relax in comfort as you watch your little ones have the time of their lives. As impressive as these facilities are, it doesn’t seem to be enough for the team over at Kidzworld as they are planning some spectacular new additions for 2017. The

under fours area will be updated with a specially designed toddler and baby play area, to ensure that any age is completely catered for during your fun day out. And speaking of catering for, to save you valuable enjoyment time a new coffee and snack bar is going to be built to help keep those busy queues to a minimum! And finally, they are planning to add some bounce to their selection with trampolines and a bouncy obstacle course, an idea that certainly has me jumping for joy! This any-weather day out is simply a must and should be the first thing on your family’s 2017 to-do list. So, invite friends, family and even your neighbours to this endlessly entertaining Cornish day out.

Shufflebum trousers work hard so your little ones can play harder! After watching her son shuffle his way from A to B, dragging his leg as he traversed from one place to the next, Tara decided something had to be done to halt the seemingly endless stream of ruined clothes. Rather than wrapping him up like it was winter, Tara began to scour parent support groups and toddler groups in search of a solution, at which point it became abundantly clear that there was a serious gap in the market for something hardwearing, comfortable and protective of delicate skin. “So I got my thinking cap on. If I couldn’t buy it, I’d have to make it.” And so Shufflebum was born! Blending her knowledge of fabric technology with experience in the motorcycle industry, Tara was able to create a range of clothing that, simply put, lets children be children. By donning a pair of Shufflebums, kids can learn to negotiate their surroundings comfortably and, most importantly, in their own way. Of course, that these clothes look great is a welcome bonus and their long-lasting, easycare benefits speak for themselves!

GAME ON!

As the demand for live game experiences grows, Eden Project has once again kept pace; introducing Eden Escape: Alien Rescue.

E

den Escape is a fantastic new example of the increasingly popular ‘escape room’ game-type. Originating in Japan, there are now 3000 escape rooms around the world, each allowing participants to play alongside real actors, solving puzzles and working as part of a team in order, as you might have guessed, to escape the room! Hailing this new, immersive experience as one of the most exciting game concepts to date, the team behind London’s Time Run – Ben Mason and Dean Rodgers – have supported production company, The Tom Sawyer Effect, in bringing the Alien Rescue dream to life. Running on dates from Saturday 14th January to Friday 10th February, Eden Escape will lock players in an ‘alien quarantine zone’, allowing them only a limited time to solve and overcome a variety of problem solving activities and obstacles. The aim: to build an immune system for the alien, saving it from attack by planet Earth’s pathogens. Being set in the Eden Project’s famously educational landscape, Ben Mason says: “whether you succeed or fail in the game, you will have some interaction with the alien and

be applying the wonders of science to try and save both it and, potentially, its species. “It’s been a fantastic opportunity to have worked on Eden Escape. We are delighted with the concept we came up with and really excited to be bringing it to the public.” Eden’s Programme Producer, Kate Francis, says: “It’s going to test your logic and teamwork and really get your adrenaline going, as well as being educational and lots of fun!” Whether you’re taking part with a family or simply a fan of escape rooms, Eden Escape promises to entertain. And, sponsored by the Wellcome Trust – a charity devoted to the bettering of worldwide health – Alien Rescue proves once again the Eden Project’s devotion to transformational social and environmental projects, the world over. Tickets cost between £15 and £20, giving valid day entry to Eden on the day of the game.

Time to hunker down with a good book Find a cosy corner, grab your favourite drink and discover a new adventure amongst the pages of one of these fantastic books! SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS

Arthur Ransome

Recently re-imagined in an enchanting remake, this classic tale of childhood adventure follows four young children and their summer spent sailing in the Lake District. The book is a charming tale in which the Walker siblings discover a whole new world upon the still waters of the lake and their island campsite. Within the pages you can enjoy sailing, fishing, exploration and even piracy as the story includes references to other classic books such as Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe. This really is a must-read; a timeless classic amongst all generations.

THE GREAT CREAM ROBBERY

James Medd and Victoria Sawden

Set in Cornwall and featuring a wonderful map of the local area at the start, this charming tale is purrfect for any who love cats, Cornwall or cream tea! Featuring the antics of Merryn Malone, the ‘cleverest cat criminal in Cornwall’, the story offers a brilliant plot, superbly characterful illustrations and a group of cows that rival even Merryn’s cleverness! The book was created by Rodda’s of Cornwall, so while digging into the tale why not enjoy a scone with some of their delicious clotted cream; you’ll soon understand why Merryn went to all that trouble!

THE MERMAID OF ZENNOR

Charles Causley and Michael Coleman

The Mermaid of Zennor takes an already wellknown legend and turns it into a beautifully illustrated and wellwritten story for all to enjoy. The tale centres on the coastal village of Zennor and following a villager who captured the heart of a mysterious and beautiful stranger from the sea! When you’ve finished the book, make sure to visit Zennor as you will find, hidden inside the church, a fantastic carving of the very mermaid in the story while the coastline holds the emerald waters she lived in; it’s a truly magical day out!

Radio 3 live in Cornwall words by:

Goonhilly Earth Station hosts Radio 3’s flagship early evening programme, In Tune, with the very wonderful Sean Rafferty!

A

n invitation to be at the making of Radio 3’s iconic In Tune, which will be broadcast live from Goonhilly Earth Station, then meet presenter Sean Rafferty, is not to be trifled with! In the office competition for the spare ticket is fierce so, after resorting to drawing straws, Jason and I set off on a sunny winter’s afternoon to spend two hours listening to magical music and watch a consummate professional at work. After a short wait the audience, with small titterings of excitement, are ushered in for the broadcast. Musicians, dressed smartly in black, quietly and methodically prepare their instruments. With minutes to go until 4.30pm, Sean Rafferty walks on and cracks a joke to announce his arrival; his professionalism as a presenter is immediately clear as he

chats to the crowd – warm, friendly and instantly likeable. Members of the Moog Ensemble are warming-up: space age, futuristic, dystopian sounds, there’s the sound of various brass instruments as they practice, while radio producers have whispered conversations. Through it all Sean is completely at ease – joking with the audience – his very own warm-up act. A hushed silence falls as we listen to the end of the previous Radio 3 programme… then it’s over to us, and Sean telling the audience all round the country – nay, the world – that Goonhilly Earth Station with its rich history is the perfect place to celebrate the culmination of Radio 3’s 70th birthday celebrations. Fittingly, the first song played by the Moog Ensemble and the brass section from Radio 3’s own

Concert Orchestra is the theme from 2001 Space Odyssey, Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss. It’s the first time they have ever played together and we are completely blown away! Then Truro Cathedral Choir walk silently in while Sean chats to Will Gregory, leader of the Moog Ensemble, but best known as one half of Goldfrapp. The choir are dressed in their long red cassocks and sing like angels; their second song is a deeply moving version of Foray’s Ava Maria and I reach for a hanky! Later Jason tells me that he forgets all about his note taking as we all become totally engrossed in the moment. People continue to move silently around moving chairs and mics as bands and singers leave and others arrive to perform. Radio 2’s award-winning Cornish folk group Changing Rooms are lyrical and evocative and I reach for my hanky again. I nudge Jason who is completely taken up in the music and remind him to try and take the odd photo when he can! He grins at me… along with the audience, we are both totally captivated. Afterwards Sean chats to us. He is absolutely charming and equally selfeffacing as he talks about his ability to walk and talk at the same time whilst managing not to get in the way of musicians and technicians… not that simple when you are going out live! Unsurprisingly he loves the frisson of

“Weren’t the Truro Choir perfect. Oh, and I really enjoyed the folk group Changing Rooms… that was a lovely surprise”

doing the show live every weekday afternoon: “I’m never completely sure what’s going to happen, what people might say to me or indeed how good the musicians are going to be!” he explains with a grin. “Weren’t the Truro Choir perfect. Oh, and I really enjoyed the folk group Changing Rooms… that was a lovely surprise.” He pauses: “But no matter what; we just have to go on.” He smiles again: “But I did make a bit of a faux pas asking them if they were going to sing anything in Welsh! That got the audience going! I just pick up the pieces and carry-on!” It turns out he is already a fan of Cornwall and spent the previous evening in Porthleven. “What a gorgeous little harbour town, and absolutely fabulous food!” His assistant whisks him off to meet some of the waiting audience. We wander out into the dark night amidst the ghostly dishes, still exclaiming over the music and Sean’s funny one-liners. In Tune can be heard each weekday afternoon from 4.30pm on Radio 3… and it always goes out live!

The Customs House Gallery looks forward to spending another year sharing with you some of the best Cornish artwork A gallery found overlooking the stunning and inspiring harbourside town of Porthleven, The Customs House Gallery, boasts a varied and impressive exhibition of local and locally inspired artists. Here, amidst pieces of artwork that perfectly capture the diverse and captivating landscape we live in, you can find art that is attainable by anyone. Due to the gallery’s hugely successful inclusion in the Own Art scheme you can purchase your perfect piece of art and spread the cost over ten months with no interest, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the fantastic artwork Cornwall produces. But that isn’t all this local favourite has to offer. Pop in and make use of the bespoke framing service, which has gone from strength to strength this past year thanks to increasing and returning local business as well as from visitors. In 2017 the gallery will be holding ‘meet the artist’ sessions, in which gallery artists take residence in the gallery for a day or two to demonstrate their painting techniques, the dates for which will be released soon. For more information visit www.cornwall-art.co.uk

Plymouth College of Art staff provide pointers on the perfect portfolio It can be a daunting task putting together a creative portfolio, so we caught up with some Plymouth College of Art programme leaders to get their top tips on the application process. One of the standout impressions taken from portfolios is clear passion for the subject and the sense that you will genuinely love what you’ll be studying. They also want to see process of thought throughout your portfolio choices, such as the journey of design and what you felt worked. “Each portfolio choice should be something that has a story to it,” says Kevin Jenkins, BA (Hons) Product Design and Innovation. In fact, by combining passion and reasoning your portfolio, should be brimming with projects that exemplify your thought progressions, skills and ambitions. Of course, the ideas and your ability to be open minded are paramount, as Mohini Chandra, BA (Hons) Photography discusses: “We want to see your willingness to experiment and try something new – we’re all about pushing boundaries and broadening your knowledge.” If you are struggling with your application, get in touch with Plymouth College of Art’s Admissions Team on 01752 203400 or admissions@pca.ac.uk, or you can sign up to the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Open Afternoon on Saturday 11th February. Featured in national art foundation courses for quality of light, Steve’s mystical expressionist work can be seen in a number of Cornish galleries. This evocative landscape is currently on view at The Tyler Gallery, Mousehole (£382), along with other original pieces that breathe the ancient Celtic spirit of Cornwall.

Situated in the picturesque coastal village of Perranuthnoe, The Cowhouse Gallery is run by a group of local artists and craftspeople. This independence allows them to offer a wide range of original work at affordable prices. Painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, jewellery, glass, woodturning and leatherwork are all displayed in this light, bright art space.

Before falling tragically ill, Elizabeth Forbes (1859-1912) was one of the Newlyn School’s leading lights. Alongside her husband Stanhope, she established the Forbes School of Painting and Drawing, teaching a whole new generation of artists. This picture can be seen in ‘A Casket of Pearls: Twenty Years of Collecting at Penlee’, an exhibition running from 4th February to 3rd June.

Tim Cotterill’s special Valentine’s Day release this year is a lush purple frog peering longingly through a grassy meadow – perhaps, in search of his soul mate? The Frogman is delighted to release this rich pastel patina frog, accompanied by his iconic friend – the ladybug. For a wide range of Frogman limited edition bronze sculptures, visit the gallery (open every day) or see the website.

Meet the maker We catch up with Michael Jenkin of Bespoke Surf – a surf-inspired furniture and skateboard brand now featured on the online marketplace Little Piece of Cornwall.

Discover more

Little Piece of Cornwall brings Cornwall’s finest independent retailers all together in one place, offering the many people who hold Cornwall close to their hearts the chance to savour it, wherever they may be, with products delivered direct to your door. Discover more Cornish makers like Michael on the website.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and bespoke surf After college, having always had an interest in designing and making, I trained as a furniture maker. Since, I’ve worked for a highly reputable kitchen and furniture maker and have been self-employed, creating a wide range of pieces from bespoke, fitted wardrobes to side tables, all from my workshop. I created Bespoke Surf in 2015, fusing my passions of woodworking and surfing by making surf-inspired, solid hardwood home décor and skateboards. I am also a volleyball coach – a rather different line of work to hours spent in the workshop! What inspires you to do what you do? I’ve always wanted to produce fine furniture and products that are bespoke, unique and made with the finest craftsmanship. Those three aspects are really important to me, as I want to create things that people will cherish for life. Why did you join the Little Piece of Cornwall marketplace? I joined because the whole idea of being able to offer products to those who hold Cornwall dear made a lot of sense to me. Whether they live, lived or simply visit Cornwall, Little Piece of Cornwall allows you to offer them something Cornish that they can take with them, wherever they go.

What do you love most about being a Cornish independent business? I’m proud to be able to offer my products as genuine, handcrafted pieces that are born out of the beautiful landscape and that people can enjoy day in, day out. Tell us your plans for 2017 and beyond I’d love to have Cornish hotels, cafés and restaurants decorating their rooms with my products for their clients to see and enjoy. As I travel regularly to Barcelona for beach volleyball, I’d also love to take my unique, solid-hardwood skateboards to surf and skate shops there. What has been a highlight moment of your venture so far? To be honest, I’d say having customer feedback on my work is the best bit. Knowing someone will have something you’ve made for years to come is a pretty special feeling. Where is your favourite surf spot in Cornwall? In the summer, I’d say Porthmeor in St Ives is my favourite; days full of volleyball, surfing, music and barbeques with friends are tough to beat, in my eyes!

h c r a M at HFC From fairy tale classics with a twist to award-winning comedy, there’s a whole host of entertainment this coming March to help you shake off those late winter blues.

n Seth Lakeman

Seth Lakeman

Wednesday 1st March Cornwall’s favourite folk superstar, Seth Lakeman returns to Hall for Cornwall to perform his latest album, Ballads of a Broken Few. Under 16s to be accompanied by an adult.

Omid Djalili: Schmuck for a Night

Thursday 2nd March Award-winning comedian and actor Omid Djalili is back on a nationwide tour. Intelligent, sometimes provocative and always entertaining, his stand-up is a hugely energetic and captivating comedy masterclass. His talents range from Hollywood to television and the West End stage. Earning praise across the world for his performances, Omid recently starred in Dickensian (BBC1), Lucky Man (Sky1) and Going Forward (BBC4) with Jo Brand. Age recommendation 16+

Brendan Cole: All Night Long

Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th March Brendan Cole returns with a show that will keep you dancing all night long. A brand new show for 2017, Brendan hosts another spectacular production featuring his guest dancers, a new leading lady as well as a 14-piece band and singers live on stage. With stunning lighting, amazing special effects and superb choreography, it’s going be a party – Don’t miss it!

A Judgement in Stone

Monday 6th to Saturday 11th March Eunice struggles to fit in when she joins a wealthy family as their housekeeper. The very reason for her awkwardness – long hidden and deeply buried – leads inexorably to a terrible tale of murder in cold blood, on Valentine’s Day. Hailed as the successor to Agatha Christie, Ruth Rendell’s brilliant plot unravels a lifetime of deceit, despair and cover-ups which, when revealed, brings about a shocking revelation almost as grizzly as murder itself.

Babe, The Sheep-Pig

Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th March Meet the lovable Babe in a heart-warming tale of friendship, adventure and bravery. Join the HfC team for an enchanting family favourite, as the classic novel which inspired the Oscar-winning film comes alive, with plenty of laughter, thrills, stunning puppetry, original music and a West End cast of eight actor-musicians. Adapted by Olivier Award winner David Wood (Goodnight Mister Tom, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG), follow the incredible story of one piglet’s rise to become the world famous sheep-pig.

The Sleeping Beauty: Duchy Ballet

Friday 17th and Saturday 18th March The entrancing tale of Princess Aurora, who sleeps for 100 years before being awakened by a handsome prince, is the new production by Duchy Ballet. Inspired by Tchaikovsky’s score, choreographer Terence Etheridge has adapted and invented a bewitching spectacle. Cornwall’s talented dancers will, as always, entertain with sparkling performances, honed to perfection.

Thursday 23rd February and Saturday 25 March Experience an extraordinary collection of short films from the world’s most prestigious mountain film festival. Follow the expeditions of some of today’s most incredible adventurers; see amazing footage of adrenaline packed action sports and be inspired by thought-provoking pieces shot from the far flung corners of the globe. This year there are two evenings that will ignite your passion for adventure, action and travel. For double the adventure, head along both nights for two entirely different film programmes. Age guidance 12A

Rambert: Ghost Dances and Other Works

Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th March Christopher Bruce’s Ghost Dances is one of the most celebrated works in Rambert’s repertoire, back on stage for the first time in 14 years. It tells stories of love and compassion, as death – in the form of the iconic ‘ghosts’ – interrupts the daily lives of a series of ordinary people. Ghost Dances is presented in a triple bill, alongside two new creations by Rambert. Each of the pieces is accompanied by live music and together they showcase the range, dynamism and virtuosity of Britain’s national dance company.

The Solid Silver 60s Show

Thursday 30th March For over 30 years, the Solid Silver 60s Show has entertained the nation and celebrated history’s most successful decade of music. Returning to HfC by popular demand, the theatre welcomes back Solid Silver 60s favourites The Merseybeats, Dave Berry, Wayne Fontana and Vanity Fayre, as well as a very special guest from the USA, Chris Montez.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Friday 31st March Described in the national press as ‘one of this country’s cultural miracles’, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra returns to Truro to perform a programme of core symphonic music. Enjoy Elgar’s autumnal ‘Cello Concerto’, alongside Beethoven’s ‘Egmont Overture’ and Sibelius’ sounds of the north from Finland.

Advice

Financial future focus

We speak to Matt Begley, MD of Harris Begley Financial Planning, to give us an overview of the financial horizon and its impact upon the property market.

D

ue to a number of variables, including our imminent exit from the European Union, Trump’s presidency and the 2017 elections in France, Holland and Germany, we are in a period of economic uncertainty. Not surprisingly, the pound has fluctuated over the past six months as a result of the Brexit referendum and UK inflation is on an upward cycle. “As would be expected, all of this upheaval has, and will continue to have, an impact on the financial markets, which may also affect the property sector,” adds Matt. “However, much has recently been undertaken by the government and the Bank of England to help ensure the country is in a better position to sustain any future shocks to the economy. Bank of England initiatives, such as the drop in the Bank Rate, £435bn of quantitative easing and the Term Funding Scheme, may help to keep down the costs for those that have or are seeking to take advantage of the current mortgage deals. “In the midst of all this, there are still excellent mortgage deals available from lenders, should you be looking to move to a new home, get on the property ladder, raise funds to finance renovations on your property, invest in the buy-to-let sector or simply secure a better interest rate than your current mortgage deal,” continues Matt. However, with so many potential

ê BELOW Matt Begley, Managing Director at Harris Begley Financial Planning

outcomes for the European Union and Brexit in the year ahead, it naturally makes sense to suggest a degree of caution, which is why professional advice is more important than ever. According to the IRESS Mortgage Efficiency Survey report, October 2016, 81.7% of mortgages are now secured through intermediaries such as Harris Begley Financial Planning. “As professional financial advisors, we operate daily within the financial markets and the mortgage marketplace, so we benefit from a direct insight and can advise you of your best options based on our knowledge, experience and expertise,” Matt explains. “Understandably we are keeping a close eye on how the Brexit process develops and any impact it may have on our clients’ investments and borrowing.” So, if you are looking for a mortgage, pension or investment guidance, Harris Begley can provide you with professional, impartial advice and a free, no-obligation consultation.

Preparing for

y r e g r su

Duchy Hospital’s Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Rebecca Dunlop, shares some valuable insight on the influence you have over your cosmetic surgery. Choose your hospital and surgeon wisely This is the most important decision you will make. There may be a choice between surgeons and they should not mind you asking for a second opinion before making a commitment. Try to find out what makes that surgeon best for you: what is their training, are they a member of a specialist organisation such as BAPRAS and/or BAAPS? When you met the surgeon, did you trust them, feel like you could ask them questions and did they listen to you or did they make you feel rushed? Find out if the surgery will be carried out in a fully equipped hospital with round-theclock medical cover. A surgeon offering cosmetic surgery should see you themselves at least twice before your procedure and should ensure that you have a ‘cooling off period’ of at least two weeks (usually a month) between the first meeting and your surgery.

Make sure that you are in the best possible physical health and fully rested in advance of your procedure

life that even in the best hands, complications can happen and will not always have an obvious cause. The important thing is that if something untoward does happen to you, try to stay calm and seek help from the surgeon who treated you without delay. You can also help to be prepared by thoroughly discussing expectations and risks with your surgeon during your first consultation. One of the advantages of being treated close to where you live and by a consultant based in Cornwall is that you will be able to see them more easily should anything like this happen.

Plan your recovery

Take care of your skin prior to surgery

The advantage of elective surgery is that you will have time to plan your support network in advance. This might entail childcare, housework, driving or just having people available for a chat and some reassurance.

For facial cosmetic surgery maintaining a good skin care regime both before and after surgery will enhance the results and is likely to make them last longer. While a surgeon may also recommend adjuvant treatments they should also explain why they feel it is necessary: you should at no point feel as though you are being ‘sold’ something extra for purely commercial reasons.

In summary, as a cosmetic surgery patient, there is a lot that you can do to maximise your potential results. Having a motivated and well-informed patient is also good for the surgeon, as it will improve communication between the both of you and will ensure you share expectations and overall satisfaction with the end results.

Weight, smoking, and mental health can all have a great impact on your surgery and recovery.

Be aware of, and realistic about, risks, potential complications and the results you want to achieve All diligent surgeons will take every precaution to minimise risk, but it remains a fact of

Free open events

If you’re considering cosmetic surgery but would like to find out more, why not head along to one of Duchy Hospital’s free open events? You’ll be able to have a ten-minute discussion with a consultant and get answers for any questions you may have. Details of forthcoming events are listed online, on the Duchy Hospital events page.

Surgeon's advice

Be mindful that before and after photos are not a promise of how you will look after surgery, since everyone has a different starting point and varies in terms of scarring and healing. Photos are a guide to show roughly what to expect with regards to the position of scars. You should not centre your decision on them or be enticed into surgery by a great result on someone else.
