This time of year is a truly fascinating time to look for wildlife. All sorts of vagrant migrating birds turn up on our shores, in the estuaries and on coastal fields, sheltering from storms and high winds out at sea. I had a wonderful time writing the wildlife cover feature, and my week was made complete as I walked my dog on the coast path with a large pod of dolphins making their way slowly and majestically towards Penzance… wonderful! If you love holidaying in Cornwall and are thinking of investing in a holiday home, or perhaps making the move permanently, you might be tempted by the range of stunning north coast properties currently on the market with John Bray & Partners. But if you’d just like to sample the delights of Cornwall for a short break, we suggest some gorgeous properties and hotels to make as your home from home. Whether looking for a sumptuous spa break or a foodie pilgrimage; a family holiday or a romantic getaway for two, there’s an escape in here just for you. So, find a pen, pour a glass of red, and start planning your next Cornish adventure!

Upcoming open events at Duchy Hospital this autumn

It’s time to treat yourself to a ‘Little Piece of Cornwall’

This November, Duchy Hospital has lined up three informative discussion led sessions to help educate any who are interested in cosmetic treatments. The first session is a varicose vein information evening in which Consultant Vascular Surgeon Mr Woodburn welcomes members of the public to his presentation of the latest vein treatments.

We, over at Cornwall Living, are delighted to announce the launch of Little Piece of Cornwall, an online compilation of everything Kernow, allowing you to breathe some Cornish air into your life. The site offers 1000s of gifts, products and art from some of the best makers and independent retailers across Cornwall. But don’t take our word for it, head over to the site and have a browse of the varied selection that goes from stunning jewellery to proper Cornish fish to luxury gift sets.

The second session is a more in-depth follow-up and offers people the chance to have a one-to-one discussion with Consultant Vascular surgeon Mr Hopper. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone with concerns about varicose veins to book in for a complimentary initial discussion. The third event is a cosmetic surgery discussion at which Mr Fitton, a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon at Duchy Hospital, welcomes anyone considering cosmetic surgery to book in for a complimentary initial discussion. Going ahead with cosmetic surgery can be a life-changing decision so this is the ideal occasion to have all your questions answered.

But it’s not all about what you can buy. The site also helps you to gain a wider knowledge of the contributors on its ‘Meet the maker’ section. Each month one of the brilliant creators is interviewed and offers an insight into their life and work. This month’s maker, Laurie McCall, shares his thoughts on Little Piece of Cornwall as being “a unique opportunity to get my work out there [and] to sell my work alongside other Cornish made products”. (See our full interview on page 66.)

These events are extremely popular but you can book simply online or by phone.

Little Piece of Cornwall looks set to bring the Cornish spirit into people’s lives, wherever they may be, and just in time for Christmas!

While away the winter at Tywarnhayle Inn, Perranporth Located just 100 yards from the three-mile long, dog-friendly beach of Perranporth, there are plenty of reasons to visit Tywarnhayle Inn. Think home-cooked food, cask ales, live music and a carvery on Sundays and you’ve got yourself an amazing venue that’ll even cater for your dog! Friday nights and Sunday lunchtimes see some of the finest local music gracing this modern yet traditional outfit. Even in the winter, sunny afternoons spent sipping winter-warming coffees and perusing the Christmas menu can be had in the well-maintained beer garden. The shorter days of this time of year make Tywarnhayle a fantastic place to while away the wintery evenings and every Monday, there’s even a pub quiz for those who like to solve the quizmaster’s conundrums! So, why not stretch your legs and unleash the hound upon the miles of golden sand stretching out from Tywarnhayle’s doorstep, before sitting down in front of the fire and quenching that inevitable, sea-air thirst? Wild Cornwall

ornwall is a fabulous place to do a bit of wildlife watching, and the autumn is particularly good for spotting birds. With its spectacular coastline, towering cliffs, sandy beaches, muddy estuaries and wooded riverbanks there is a whole plethora of habitats. And what about inland? There’s the wild ruggedness of Bodmin moor, beloved by Eleanor Tomlinson of Poldark fame; dappled woodlands and the wide open spaces of the Lizard and Penwith. With Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and Special Scientific Interest (SSIs) there are some pretty unique habitats too. But Cornwall is special too because it makes you slow down and look around. And that is the secret to good wildlife watching… just stopping to observe what’s around you. Once you have found your

spot, settle down, and just look – don’t even think of raising those binoculars yet! Once you have grown accustomed you will start to notice movements and silhouettes on top of telegraph poles and gateposts. Then with you eyes still firmly on whatever it is – raise your binoculars – and take a look! Deer, rabbits, fox or raptors (birds of prey to us) it’s always exciting and hugely rewarding.

The Lizard

I spend a day – a reasonably fine autumnal Monday – out in west Cornwall to see what I might find. The Lizard (AONB and SSI) with its wide variety of habitats seemed a good place to start. So I head out to Windmill Farm Reserve with its fascinating 17th century windmill building, which has been roofed and restored as a lookout. This impressive Scheduled Ancient Monument has quite a history; it was a lookout tower

Unexpected visitors

You might glimpse an osprey on an estuary in Cornwall now. And if it looks like a pelican, has a bill like a pelican and flies like a pelican… then it probably is a pelican. One has been resident in west Cornwall all summer!

during World War II and a hideout for an infamous sheep smuggling gang in the early 19th century… kids old and young would love it! There’s an information centre with visitors’ book to check for recent sightings and then you can climb to the top of the windmill; it’s not that high but the land around is flat so you can see for miles, with stunning sea views. But… the stairs and the floor at the top are made of open metal mesh, so a little disconcerting and probably not for the faint-hearted! Outside, this wonderful home for wildlife comprises grassland and heathland, scrub, bog, swamp and hedgerow. I’m only there briefly and get chatting to a passing ranger from Cornwall Wildlife Trust who helps me spot a hen harrier

swooping over the fields and also tells me about the barn owls which have successfully fledged four chicks this year that can sometimes be seen flying round the reserve at dusk, and the short eared owls – featured in our photographs – that return each winter and can be seen hunting over the old airfield during the day as they are diurnal. From there it’s only a short trip down to the Lizard Point – though if you haven’t already visited, a stop at Kynance Cove is a real must. Arriving at the Lizard, walk down to the far point and you are almost guaranteed to see seals lazing on the rocks below when the tide is out. I am lucky and, although it is officially closed, there’s a friendly, informative NT volunteer at the Lizard wildlife watchpoint with the telescope already set up on the seals and spare binoculars for anyone to use. I stop to look and chat. There are five seals on the rocks and at least one ‘bottling’ in the water below us: when they rest, bobbing in the water with just their head above water. Then a family of choughs flies past: the parents have successfully raised at least two chicks this year. A bit later the resident

family of kestrels swoop in, I think they are peregrines, but my new friend kindly points out the difference. No one seems to mind if you get it wrong… it’s being interested that’s important. And peregrines are often seen along the coast path. It’s a great place to see passing seabirds in their thousands especially in the autumn as migrating birds depart for their winter feeding grounds. Reluctantly, I draw myself away from the Point, it’s seriously catching this wildlifewatching bug, and I am worried that as soon as I leave pods of dolphins will glide by.

Marazion A quick trip up to Marazion, with spectacular views over St Michael’s Mount, to scour the beach for birds, there is the distinctive shrill ‘peep peep’ of oystercatchers flying in, and lots of other waders and seabirds. Then across the road to the RSPB reserve where autumn brings some unexpected migrants from the north, the pools and muddy edges are home to little egrets, waders and finches; you might even hear the foghorn like ‘whump whump’ of the secretive bittern. If you are in Cornwall in late November then there’s the chance of seeing the amazing spectacle of a murmuration of starlings as they head home to roost in the reeds at Marazion reserve.

The story of the owl

Amateur photographer, Dan Murphy, took the amazing images of the short-eared owl. “I probably spent about an hour waiting at Windmill Farm in the rain for the shots. Then suddenly the rain stopped, the weather cleared and we saw the owl take off n Theside Phoenix from the other of the sailing into reserve. They don’t seem to be London particularly bothered by people, unlike barn owls, so we watched and I took photos for about half and hour. I use a Nikon D810, handheld, and took 300 to 400 photos to get 50 that were in focus and then whittled that down further to about 15 really great shots”

Hayle Finally I head up to the Hayle estuary reserve. Here I spot a pair of little egrets, some curlews and plenty of seabirds. Vagrants seeking refuge following gales around the coast often turn up here and there is always a large flock of waders, gulls and ducks to be seen as the tide going out exposes the mud-flats for feeding. If you drive into Hayle and cross over the bridge to North Quay, park behind the open-air swimming pool – closed in the autumn and winte. There is a beautiful walk along a wide flat path along the estuary with lovely gardens and benches for watching the birdlife that’s perfect for wheelchairs and pushchairs or family bike rides. Any of the estuaries around Cornwall will provide a lovely walk and the chance to spot birds and other wildlife. Cycle the Camel Trail to Padstow and take time out to stop and see what’s about. The Tamar and Lynher rivers are home to avocets and the occasional spoonbill. The Helford is another beautiful spot; maybe watch with a pint of local beer at the Shipwrights or the Ferryboat Inn. The Heron Inn at Malpas

near Truro is aptly named with great views over the river and the heronry opposite, and, of course, at the Pandora Inn you can sit out right on the estuary. A trip from Falmouth to Truro by ferry is a wonderful way to spot wildlife, and the skipper is always good at pointing out anything he or she sees… watch out for kingfishers along the bank… just a bright streak of brilliant blue. So wherever you are in Cornwall, it’s worth taking a bit of time to really look around… and don’t forget above you. But be warned it does get rather addictive. Next time I go I’m taking a flask and some sandwiches because you just want to stay a little bit longer… just one more sighting… whatever it might be!

When opportunity knocks We take a look at Atlantic House – a unique holiday home investment opportunity that’s set to be a sell out. words by:

Dan Warden

C

ornwall is forever crying out for luxury developments of properties that are designed to maximise the experience of those escaping the city for a country break and a true taste of Cornwall. This demand, whilst being accommodated in some parts, has yet to breach the shoreline of Polzeath, one of most beautiful coastal locations in the county. Until now, that is… The first of its kind in this ever-popular location is Atlantic House. Situated in New Polzeath, just three miles from Rock and Padstow – a short ferry ride away – this development is an unbelievable opportunity for would-be investors to acquire a fractional (shared) ownership apartment. Know this, though: 40% of fractions have already been reserved and two apartments are now fully reserved, and with completion due early next year, this rare, not-to-be-missed opportunity will soon have you kicking yourself, if you’re not quick off the mark! So what makes this such a once-in-alifetime chance? Tourism, in Cornwall, is a thriving part of our economy – one indeed on which we rely – so there is a huge demand for luxury accommodation,

one which isn’t strictly limited to the high season. What’s more, when visitors envisage a trip to Cornwall, as we all do when visiting the coastal regions of foreign soil, they hold dear the prospect of sea views, close proximity to the beach and all that the coasts have to offer, not to mention convenience to the fresh, homegrown food that helps make Cornwall best in show when it comes to staycation locations. As a fraction, or shareholder of one of only nine apartments, you are granted five weeks (per fraction) a year to enjoy your investment on the pinnacle of the north Cornish coast. In addition to the many amenities in Polzeath, guests here have access to a world of sailing, surfing, windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, coastal walks and fantastic golf courses as well a wonderful range of shops, restaurants and lively cafés. The Blue Flag beach, a stone’s throw from Atlantic House, has surf that’s equally as good to watch as it is to paddle out to, as well as an abundance of rock pools that’ll keep the kids entertained for hours. And, if you like to get out and about on two wheels, you can take a bike ride from Wadebridge to Padstow, along the pretty,

meandering Camel estuary, keeping an eye out for wildlife as you go. Each fraction holder is entitled to a week in high season, two weeks mid-season and two weeks in the low season, meaning that rather than limiting yourself to one break a year, an investment in one of these stunning apartments grants you year-round access to Cornwall. Indeed, buying into this incredible development could completely transform how you go about making your escape from the city! With prices ranging from £115,000 to £165,000, when you consider that each fraction has a 999-year lease, it’s an investment that could save you and your family inordinate amounts of money on Cornish breaks for years to come. And, don’t feel like you have to personally use up those five weeks a year; you can let your weeks to bolster your income, or potentially swap them them, subject to availability. Let’s take a look at what you’re paying for. Each apartment, of which there are nine, enjoys unrivalled views of the sea and direct access to the beach. Fully furnished and serviced, guests can enjoy the convenience of a hotel, restaurant, bar and management

facilities, meaning that each visit comes complete with the ease of a holiday you’d normally expect through an agency. During your stay, there will be secure storage for surfboards and wetsuits on site for the week, for maximum convenience. What’s more, long-term storage is available less than a ten-minute drive away so, if you intend to make a second home of your apartment but don’t want to ferry the kayak, bikes or surfboards up and down the country, you can keep it all safe in one place, ready for your next trip. Simply put, this development has everything and more to offer the potential holiday home investor. So, if you’re interested and would like to find out more, contact Atlantic House or John Bray and Partners to find out more about how this amazing new development could change how you holiday!

very now and then a property comes on the market that’s truly life changing. It’s at that moment that the possibility of a new chapter in your life becomes so very real. Hale is just that; a charming former farmhouse with four outstanding, beautiful barn conversions as well as its own pottery studio. Set in more than three acres of

stunning Cornish countryside, Hale is situated in the rural parish of St Kew, which Sir John Betjeman captured beautifully when he wrote: “A beautiful inland parish of sudden green hills, wooded valleys, old lanes to undisturbed hamlets, little manor houses and a grand church.” St Kew is a conservation village and is regarded as one of the most historic and unspoiled parishes in Cornwall with 96 listed buildings, the Grade I listed Church of St James the Great and, unusually, a listed ford over the river Amble. So, let’s take a more detailed look at this astounding development. Traditionally constructed from brown elvan with Delabole rag slates and flooring slabs, Hale has been lovingly restored by the present owners to exacting, award-winning standards over the last 20 years. Today, each building is residential with Orchard Barn, The Granary, Pottery Cottage and The Carriagehouse each being used for high-quality, holiday accommodation that has been awarded the Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold Award. This means you’re not just buying a house or holiday let – you’re buying a wonderful home with a fully functional business! The Farmhouse – central to this development – is a Cornish stone-built, southfacing property, offering generous living

é ABOVE Central to this stunning development, the Farmhouse í BELOW The interiors of these conversions have a warm sense of informality

space with two reception rooms, a Morsø multi-fuel stove, charming beamed ceilings and feature stone walls, as well as four bedrooms on the first floor, a stunning family bathroom and a useful ground floor study. Look to the outbuildings and you’re faced with five exquisite conversions, each with its own character and each built to exacting standards. The Orchard Barn – the most recently converted barn of the development – is the current owner’s ‘flagship’ ecofriendly cottage and has been built with both contemporary luxury and the environment in mind. The result: a boutique-style holiday home complete with underfloor heating, Delabole slate and oak flooring, as well as gorgeous bifold doors opening out onto its own large, south-facing garden. It generates an income from the renewable heat incentive, with its modern air-source heat pump. The others – The Granary, Pottery Cottage and the Carriagehouse – all share the same enviable features of Delabole slate, stunning interiors and a build quality that’s second to none. They are all currently used as luxury holiday lets; Pottery Cottage, with two en-suite double bedrooms, also generates an income from the Feed in Tariff with its 6KW array of solar panels, providing valuable energy to be used on site. The Carriagehouse has an open-plan living room looking onto its own

terrace and vaulted timber ceilings, with a wonderful atmosphere that’s both informal and traditional. Head outside and you’ll find yourself breathing in the fresh, country air of the surrounding farmland and marvelling at the endless views across the north Cornish countryside. Within the three and a half acres that Hale is located, you’ll find woodland, mature trees, specimen plants and herbaceous borders. What’s more, with stunning, large lawned areas all round the property you’ve plenty of outside space to kick back and enjoy those balmy summer evenings. Well, 2 The Sands near Polzeath is available, fully furnished, with stylish coastal interiors that complement the spectacular nature of the north Cornish coast. You’ll notice on entering that this house is well equipped, with a fully-fitted kitchen complete with dishwasher and wine cooler as well as a TV room with Sky and DVD player. wash with light and lovingly realised to maximise the highly sought-after position and surroundings, it’s not often a property lives up to its name like Cloud Nine. Let’s start with the location. Situated overlooking the rugged north Cornish coast, Cloud Nine is moments from the fisherman’s cottages and narrow streets of Port Isaac. The stage for various films and television series, Port Isaac is also famed as the home to the internationally renowned band of shanty singers, The Fisherman’s Friends – often found singing on the Platt in the height of summer. On entering Cloud Nine, you’ll be wowed by the long, spacious hallway and full-height glass windows. On the left is the study; perfect for those working from home, this also has the potential to be a fourth bedroom! The open-plan kitchen has a soaring, double-height ceiling and offers a generous social space for any gathering, with plenty of room to move. What’s more, the builtin AGA augments the otherwise modern outfit with something traditional, homely and in-keeping with the home’s Cornish surroundings. Impressively, the property is heated via the AGA alongside a heat recovery system. By circulating and replacing the air in the house twice every 24 hours, this ensures that optimum atmosphere and economy is maintained. Combined with eco-

friendly insulation, this makes Cloud Nine extremely energy efficient! Upstairs, residents can enjoy two very well appointed bathrooms and three bedrooms; the master bedroom has its own en-suite and, along with bedroom two, enjoys spectacular, south-facing views over the garden and across the valley. Bedroom three, with its beautiful feature window, drinks in stunning views of Port Isaac and the Atlantic beyond. Outside is the driveway with ample parking, as well as a large decked terrace that, spanning the length of the property, comes complete with its own hot tub and sea views! The grounds, which occupy the pinnacle of the site, benefit from privacy, shelter and unrivalled views over the harbour and coast beyond. In such a sought-after location and with so much to offer anyone seeking a modern alternative to traditional, by-the-sea living, Cloud Nine surely won’t be on the market for long!

An exciting redevelopment opportunity overlooking the beautiful and rugged coast of north Cornwall.

S

kimming through the exciting properties and developments abundant in Cornwall is enough to whet any would-be buyer’s appetite, yet Seaspray in Polzeath, along with its massive potential, is in a whole league of its own. Polzeath, a highly desirable and hugely sought-after part of Cornwall, tempts visitors every year with vast expanses of sand, world-class surfing and scenic coastal walks. Nearby, in Rock and Daymer Bay, conditions are ripe for a spot of sailing, waterskiing and windsurfing. Alternatively, if watersports aren’t your bag, you can get your 18-hole fix at St Enodoc or the Point at Polzeath, which both offer excellent and challenging courses for the discerning golfer. Set in the heart of this enviable locale, Seaspray represents an exciting opportunity to redevelop two contemporary dwellings that, even as they stand, have an impressive letting history. Designed by Michael Tarring Architects, the new plans for Seaspray and Back Cottage would triple the internal floor area of Seaspray! What’s more, the current single-storey property would become a

four-bedroom, multi-storey residence, each floor enjoying access to its own terrace and breath-taking views over the rugged, north Cornish coast. Back cottage is currently laid out in a similar fashion with three bedrooms; both properties have their own parking. However the new Michael Tarring designs will substantially increase the living space and result in two stunning properties. The best part of buying into Polzeath is the wealth of excellent eateries and pubs that make the area famous; from The Mariners Pub in Rock and the renowned Restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac, to Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant and Paul Ainsworth’s No. 6, just across the estuary in Padstow, there’s something to satisfy every appetite.

“Our challenge is to make the most of this spectacular setting and ensure that every visitor walks away with a new favourite beach, restaurant and venue!”

ot off the heels of a fabulous Cornish summer, you’ll find Tracey Griffiths and her team at Lusty Glaze Beach busily preparing themselves for what promises to be an exciting autumn and winter. Rather than winding down, the ultimate beachfront location will be packed full of parties, celebrations, weddings and some very special events. Lusty Glaze is a private beach located on the north Cornish coast, the last bay on the edge of Newquay as you head toward Watergate Bay on the Atlantic Highway. Already synonymous with wonderful food and famed for its esteemed sundowner sessions (previous headliners include Guy Garvey, Morcheeba and Newton Faulkner), Lusty Glaze’s reputation as an awesome, all-year-round venue grows yet further; the perfect venue for private parties and unique ticketed events. “Tucked away on the north Cornish coast and protected from the wind by dramatic horseshoe cliffs which frame a perfect sunset the beach, we’re blessed to have a natural venue for weddings, events and concerts”, explains Tracey, owner of Lusty Glaze Beach. “Our challenge is to make the most of this spectacular setting and ensure that every visitor walks away with a new favourite beach, restaurant and venue!” Every restaurant service, wedding and event is remarkable at Lusty Glaze by virtue of the changing tides, sunsets and surf which bless the beach every day. In October, the team hosted a candlelit

evening with operatic trio, Tenors Encore, an exclusive event with very limited tickets. Add to the mix Lusty’s brand new winter menu, weddings and intimate acoustic gigs – Woodburner Sessions – it has never been easier to say farewell to summer. Large scale cooperate events can also be hosted at Lusty Glaze, with businesses from across the country given the unique opportunity to hire the beach for actionpacked team events, surf and celebrations. What unites all of the visitor experiences together is Lusty’s team who work behind the scenes, to bring the detail, finesse and fun to every occasion. “This Christmas, we are hosting a number of fantastic, fun-themed Christmas parties for businesses across Cornwall and others further afield”, explains Tracey. “If you would like to fly your team from the city to Cornwall for an Australian-themed beach party this December, why not? Our role is to make it the best party you have been to! We love entertaining and have some really exciting private functions, winter weddings and events coming up that will be absolutely world class.” Keep up to date with all the party season plans, and find out more using the details below.

hen it comes to home improvements, you know you’re the best at what you do when TV personality and all-round property expert Sarah Beeny requires your services on her own home. Resin Drives recently won the contract to re-surface Sarah’s 450 metre driveway; just another celebrity name to add to their customer list, following the transformation Uri Geller’s 2,000 metre drive. As someone who knows all about improvements and restoration work adding aesthetic and monetary value, Sarah’s endorsement of Resin Drives speaks wonders. So, why not achieve stunning results for your drive by giving it a bit of the star treatment? After all, it’s the first thing you see of your home as you approach it. What could be more pleasing than knowing your property is set aside from the rest with its own unique colour and style? The Resin Drives team believe in looking after our environment and are taking steps to lower their carbon footprint. All of their resin drives are made up of natural stone and 100% organic resin, which looks fantastic, and is as strong and durable as concrete, without costing the planet. A large choice of standard and bespoke shades makes the decorative potential unique to your taste and colour scheme, while virtually any pattern and style

can be achieved, including lettering and images, giving the ultimate ‘wow!’ factor. Resin completely transforms driveways, patio areas and even paths. If you’d like to go high-tech, Resin Drive’s Scandinavian-designed ice and snow melting system can be used beneath any of its resin surfaces, to ensure it remains free from dangerous ice and snow build up. The robust heating system comes with an intelligent thermostat and fully automated heating system. The completed driveway itself is porous so there’s no issue with drainage, it’s resistant to weed growth and occasional power washing is all the maintenance that’s required. Resin Drives offers a 5-year insurance-backed guarantee on all installations. To make your resin drive even easier to obtain, Resin Drives has introduced a superb ‘12 months interest-free’ option. So you no longer need to think about saving up or even spending your savings. ummer in Cornwall has flown by in a blaze of glorious beach days, fun-packed visits and some fabulous food. To avoid the post summer blues we’re busy planning our next holiday adventure. While the sun may have taken its leave Cornwall is just as spectacular in winter as it is in summer. The coastline becomes all the more rugged during the winter season with moody skies, wild walks and stormy seas. With the summer crowds long gone there is something very special about a winter walk along a deserted Cornish beach, wrapped up against the elements with the promise of a roaring fire and a steaming cup of coffee to return to. For the ultimate winter break in Cornwall, you can’t beat celebrating Christmas on the coast. Recently awarded Luxury Modern Hotel of the Year by the Luxury Travel Guide, the four-star Atlantic Hotel in Newquay has the ideal festive package to celebrate in style with your family. For some, spending Christmas away from home can be a little daunting, but a stay at the Atlantic Hotel will make everyone feel special. As you open the curtains you’ll be faced with the most glorious of sea views out across the ocean. Days start with hearty

breakfasts at the Atlantic – you’ll need to be fully fuelled for that family beach walk across Fistral. Once the cobwebs have well and truly been blown away it’s back to the hotel for a swim – we recommend adults indulge themselves in a relaxing spa treatment – before the children are treated to a High Tea Christmas Party. For the grownups a champagne reception followed by a candlelit dinner will make this a Cornish Christmas Eve to remember. On Christmas Day the whole family can sit down and relax over a five-course lunch set against the backdrop of the sea, with a special visit from Father Christmas for the little ones. What a treat – no slaving over a hot stove and not a dish in sight! If that wasn’t enough excitement for one day then a big screening of Elf accompanied with buttery popcorn, hot chocolate and cookies provides the perfect end to a perfect day. Christmas in Cornwall is really not to be missed!

Breakfast

f you’ve had your ear to the ground over the last 12 months or so, you’ll have heard the increasing rumblings emanating from the coastal village of Perranuthnoe: the rise of husband and wife team, Nik and Laura Boyle, and the Victoria Inn. With rave reviews pouring in from all angles including The Times, The Telegraph, Sawday’s, The Good Pub Guide, Michelin and Trencherman’s, there was only ever one place we were headed for a weekend away from London. Arriving on a Saturday afternoon, a nice welcoming Cornish bar was exactly what the doctor ordered. Greeted by the eversmiling host and owner, Laura, a drink was the assured priority; a pint of local ale (One Hop from Cornish Crown brewery) for me, and local gin Curio, infused with rock samphire and served with tonic and a piece of lime, for my wife – the perfect start to our mini vacation. We were shown our beautifully crafted room, with fresh milk for our teas and coffees and books to read, we were surprised by the attention to detail – a professional but wonderfully unassuming delivery of service. For dinner, we were given a beautiful spot by the window, private enough to enjoy our own company, yet central enough to experience the gentle hum of the evening. We were presented with the house signature, a freshly baked beer and cheese bread still warm from the oven with homemade duck ‘marmite’ butter and an ice cold shot glass of tomato gazpacho, a

rather lavish and unexpected way to start the evening. From there things got even better; homemade pheasant sausage with a beetroot fondant, onion puree, artichokes, and poached blackberries. The gaminess and earthiness was offset beautifully with the sharp spike of poached blackberry running through it. A rich, sweet onion puree brought it all together, perfectly finished with a crunch of crispy puffed-wild rice, paired with a lovely full-bodied Pinotage.

It was becoming clear that this was no ordinary pub, with an ever-present touch of the extraordinary. My cod with pork cheek arrived with perfect golden caramelisation; flawlessly executed and a real testament to some exceptional cooking. Earthy Girolle mushrooms, crushed peas, slow braised pork cheeks, some sweet and sharp silver skin onions and a light thyme jus finished off this fantastic take on surf and turf. My wife chose the homemade ricotta and mushroom tortellini, served with rainbow chard, peas, and a light butter emulsion, topped with fresh truffle; a simple and elegant dish paired with an excellent Viogner. And what better way to finish than with a sticky plum pudding and a chocolate brownie? Needless to say, we retired to our room well stuffed. We chatted with the effervescent chef and owner Nik over breakfast. It’s refreshing to hear a chef talk with such passion about not only the local produce, but the local area too. He truly lives and breathes this coastline. We were stunned at the array of breakfast on offer with fresh berries, homemade muesli and honey granola, freshly baked breads, yoghurts, and cooked options of avocado with poached free-range eggs, sweet tomatoes, sweet chilli sauce, or locally smoked salmon with scrambled eggs on toast. Off to explore St Michael’s mount, one of the most unique sites in the country and just a 20-minute walk from the pub, we arrived at just the right time to walk the

causeway. Back to the Victoria Inn for a late Sunday roast; beef cooked to 54 degrees and then seared and blackened on the crust with marmite and thyme, producing the most incredible medium-rare you’ll ever eat. Towering Yorkshires and incredible crispy roast potatoes combined with deep delicious gravy and a great selection of local vegetables to made it one to remember. My counterpart, meanwhile, was over the moon with the Cornish pork loin, accompanied by apple sauce and crisp, salty crackling. Dessert came at the suggestion of the chef, a port soaked Stilton with celery, pears, and a walnut salad. Shared between us, it managed to encapsulate our entire stay: unexpected, inviting, heart-warming and refreshing. This pub really does deliver on all the good stuff without the omnipresent pretentiousness. It delivers all the comforts of high-end hotels, but with the heart and soul of a proper B&B. It moves away from the clamour of fashionable foams and cubes, yet keeps hold of the excitement and intrigue that all great food has. The head chef’s sometimes playful dishes always retained a sense of elegance, and balanced perfectly the hearty, feel-good factor of good old-fashioned home pub cooking.

he Roseland is a place where you can be sure of a great Cornish welcome and a fantastic holiday experience, with a great selection of restaurants and eateries, glorious uncrowded beaches and superb accommodation. It’s the perfect place to explore and while away the days, making this area of Cornwall an incredibly popular visitor destination. One of the oldest independent holiday property agencies is Portscatho Holidays, based in St Mawes, offering the largest selection of properties in St Mawes and with properties throughout the Roseland. For those seeking a more relaxing holiday or somewhere to unwind over a long lunch or evening meal, the Roseland is laden with award-winning restaurants, including The Driftwood (the only Michelin-starred restaurant on the south coast), the Kings Head in Ruan Lanihorne, The Nare at Carne Beach, The Rosevine at The Rosevine and Hotel Tresanton and the Idle Rocks in St Mawes. For that daytime treat there’s the Hidden Hut on Porthcurnick Beach, rated as one of the UK’s best beach cafés.

For something more unusual, why not try a yoga holiday or a yoga break with a professional coach such as Felicity (see www.yogawithfelicity.com for more details). If you want someone else to do the work you can see the Roseland from the King Harry Ferry, or feel the sea breeze on the St Mawes Ferry, which offers year-round connections to Falmouth. Another recommendation is to sit back and enjoy the lovely river scenery on one of the boat trips to Trelissick or Truro. There is also a small passenger ferry that links St Mawes to the St Anthony Headland during the summer months. So if you’re looking for an escape in a truly beautiful part of the world, with stunning scenery and food to match, then make the Roseland your next destination.

pecial occasions – whether it’s a ruby wedding anniversary, 40th birthday or a long overdue family reunion – are momentous times that warrant something truly extraordinary. These magical moments spent with loved ones create beautiful memories that will be cherished forever. Special occasions of this exact sort are what Cornwall-based company Perfect Stays specialises in, with a portfolio of staggeringly beautiful, large houses. And size really does matter when it comes to these occasions. Bringing the whole family, or a group of old school friends, together is no small affair. Ensuring that there’s plenty of room for everyone to relax and unwind is crucial, as is making sure that the kitchen can cope with cooking meals and that there are separate communal spaces for groups to spread out and find solitude. The Perfect Stays team give us the lowdown on what’s new to their portfolio for 2017.

Trewhella, Crantock Having undergone an enormous renovation in 2016, this former vicarage built in the ‘60s has been transformed into a beautiful, modern home with striking natural wood features that create a cosy, welcoming atmosphere instantly upon arrival. Blue Elvin, Newlyn Amongst the rows of granite cottages and wooded hills sits this enormous, moderniststyle holiday home. Designed and built by award-winning architect Nicholas Glover in 2008, Blue Elvin is a striking four-bedroom property with awe-inspiring views across Mount’s Bay, over to St Michael’s Mount. The area of Newlyn and Penzance is a paradise for seafood aficionados with Newlyn boasting the biggest fishing fleet in the UK. A plethora of attractions, including the Minack Theatre, Land’s End, Logan Rock and, of course, St Michael’s Mount promises an unforgettable holiday.

he Merchants Manor in Falmouth is the sort of place you can kick off your shoes, curl up on a comfy sofa with a book and look forward to some delicious food. There’s an understated elegance with gorgeous wooden floors, muted grey and white colours with wonderful splashes of colour and quirky artefacts – it’s like being welcomed into someone’s country home by the sea! Meeting owners Nick Rudlin and Sioned ParryRudlin, it’s easy to see where this wonderful atmosphere comes from. They are warm and welcoming, and rather proud of the wonderful hotel they have created. Nick is delighted when I explain my feelings about the place. “That’s exactly the vision we have; somewhere where you can totally relax in beautiful surroundings, with truly delicious food and drink!” Sioned smiles and chips in: “Nick has a real ambition for the food and beverage side; he is always in the kitchen working up dishes with Hylton, our Chef Patron, and the team.” They’ve done lots of work on the hotel and, apart from the designer, have used local Cornish tradespeople and businesses. “We still use the same carpenters and painters, even the guy who takes care of the gorgeous wooden floors is the same.” Nick explains. “And we work hard to find our food and drinks suppliers, from the house bubbly which is local, to the lobsters and foraged greenery used in the kitchen… we continue to search out new suppliers and work closely with existing ones.” Now they are finally getting a bit of time off, it’s family trips to the local beaches. Sioned goes running along the coast and Nick says with a grin: “The nicest thing we’ve done is to get a dog, our Springer, Henry.” Sioned smiles, “We just love making people happy in the hotel, customers and staff. We love this place and work hard… but as soon as we’re off it feels like we’re on holiday!” Merchants Manor is definitely on my list of favourite hotels and if I can wait that long I’ll be making use of their winter ‘Sunday night sleep over’ offer. From £80 per room for roast dinner, bed and breakfast, it’s one not to be missed!

s the busy holiday season on the Isles of Scilly draws to a close the winter flower season begins. The very first scented narcissi are often picked as early as September; by midOctober picking has started in earnest and will continue until Easter. There is a long history of flower farming on the Isles of Scilly and today narcissi are grown commercially on three of the five inhabited islands, keeping up the long held island tradition of producing high quality and beautifully scented narcissi for which Scilly is famous. As well as a great deal of local expertise, the flowers are helped by the mild climate. Scilly might get battered by some ferocious Atlantic storms, but the sea surrounding the little islands acts like a giant blanket and the temperature rarely drops below freezing. This means flowers can grow outdoors all through the winter in small fields, sheltered by tall pittosporum hedges. The way Scillonian farmers grow their flowers might be very traditional but the way some farms now sell them certainly isn’t. Churchtown Farm on St Martin’s has led the way and for nearly 30 years, the Julian family have been sending Scilly grown scented flowers by post, cutting out the

wholesale flower markets and delivering gift boxes of fresh Scillionian flowers direct to any doorstep in the country. The second generation of Julians, Ben and Zoe, are now responsible for the day-to-day running of the farm and, as Ben points out, they can’t rely on customers just popping in: “Our summer visitors are often surprised to learn how busy we are in the winter. Obviously there isn’t much passing trade in December, so people use our website or call us to order their flowers. Our farm team are good multitaskers: often the person taking your order will also have graded and packed your flowers.” Churchtown Farm is a hive of activity, employing 18 people year-round, with quite a few more joining the team at the busiest times such as Christmas and Mother’s Day, when thousands of boxes of scented narcissi will leave the islands, sending messages of love and a little bit of Scilly to homes all over the country.

t Ives is one of Cornwall’s most popular holiday destinations, famous for its beautiful golden beaches, top restaurants and a lively year-round events calendar, as well as its legendary charm. But long before it was a draw for holidaymakers, the iconic, steeply hilled fishing village in the west of Cornwall was a haven for artists. Today, St Ives remains abuzz with artistic flair, home to dozens of studios, workshops and galleries tucked away amongst enticing cobbled alleyways and narrow, winding streets. A recent count estimated there were 73 galleries in a town with a population of 11,000, which swells over the summer months to over 100,000. One of the most famous of the town’s art galleries, the Tate St Ives, reopens in May 2017, whilst the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden close by is open daily all year round. Like many Cornish coastal towns, St Ives capitalises on the abundant local produce on its doorstep and has become a popular foodie destination in its own right, with an

annual Food & Drink Festival in the spring. This hugely popular event features celebrity chefs hosting workshops as well as a range of food stands manned by local producers, live music, activities for children and entertainment for all ages to enjoy. With streets lined with fine dining restaurants, cafés, pubs and the essential fish and chip outlets, you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to tucking in to lunch, dinner or even just a snack. A short stroll along the harbour leads to first-class gourmet dining at The Alba, in the town’s former lifeboat house, or a few doors

Partygoers and families alike take to the streets in fancy dress to see in the New Year, a tradition the town has continued for many years. ocated near Helston on the Lizard Peninsula and steeped in Cornish history, Poldark is the only complete tin mine in Cornwall that’s open for underground guided tours, regarded highly for its historic relevance in the annals of Cornish mining. Home to its very own Bronze Age Scheduled Ancient Monument, the Trenear Mortar Outcrop – believed to have been used during the prehistoric period to grind tin ore to fine sand before smelting – Poldark Mine offers visitors a tour, not just through Cornish heritage, but through mining history

right back to its origins, before the pen of history was even put to paper. As a visitor here, you can explore the labyrinth of levels, caverns, adits, stopes, tunnels and shafts that make up this 18th century mine and learn, through exciting and educational guided tours, what it meant to be a miner, at a time when mining was Cornwall’s premier industry. What’s more, with Poldark’s beautiful open-air museum in a stunning rural setting, you can brush up on your history whilst making the most of the Cornish summer sun. Registered for Civil Ceremonies, including weddings, the renewal of vows and naming ceremonies, you can steep your special day in history, either in the pretty gardens, or in the underground Holman Chamber. Parties and receptions are taken care of as well, at any time of year, making Poldark perfect for your private event. So, if you’re looking to broaden your knowledge on the heritage that helped make Cornwall what it is today, pay a visit to Poldark Mine, one of the county’s oldest mines and the scene of tin production for thousands of years.

e’ve all heard of the beautiful seaside town that brings millions of people to its picturesque coast every summer. Named one of the ten best European beach destinations by TripAdvisor, and winner of the ‘best family holiday destination’ award by Coast magazine, St Ives is enjoyed by people of all ages. But what about the quieter months? Does St Ives still provide that getaway experience much loved by visitors from far and wide? In fact, the autumn and winter months are among the best times to visit this impressive town as the crowds have died down and you can explore your surroundings for what they really are. Regular events such as the Farmer’s Market, the ‘Story of St Ives’ guided tour, and art exhibitions all carry on as normal, providing visitors an enjoyable way to discover more about the town. The Shanty Baba Storyteller provides some of the most popular town activities during the quieter months, but these are not for the faint-hearted. The Lantern Ghost Storywalk guides you through the most haunted places in town and offers the opportunity to explore St Ives by night. If you’re with your family, the St Ives Pirate Walk is great for all ages and even requires guests to wear a pirate-themed outfit, all part of the fun! Now that the summer crowds have gone, the undisturbed beaches make for a great location to learn to surf, kayak, or paddleboard. St Ives

Surf School is one of the best places to surf in the whole of Cornwall and is open during the quieter months when the Atlantic swell makes for the perfect waves for surfing. Great for all the family, the quiet season gives you the opportunity to focus on watersports without the hustle and bustle of the summer. Whether you’re looking for an active break or a relaxing one, you can utilise your surroundings however you want. West Cornwall is known for its amazing views and coastal paths, and the colder months turn the Cornish landscapes into truly breathtaking sights. Imagine crisp golden leaves, icy fields glistening in the winter sun, and a warm hot chocolate in a comfy Cornish pub as a reward after a hard day’s walking. When it comes to walking, you’ll be spoilt for choice in St Ives. The clifftop coastal path from St Ives to Zennor is a three-hour long walk and boasts incredible views of the beaches and towns below. Among other winter walks lies the circular route from St Ives to Carbis Bay that guides walkers through the Steeple Woods Nature Reserve to the famous monument overlooking the bay. The route will then bring you onto the white beaches of Porthminster and Carbis Bay

before you return back to St Ives. Tregenna Castle complements both the active and relaxing nature of St Ives’ quiet side. With an inclusive seasonal offering of a getaway including a night’s stay, Cornish breakfast, and access to all the facilities for just £59, there’s nothing more you need for the perfect seaside break. W

histlefish, derived from the rockling of the similar name, emerged from the wild Atlantic waters of St Ives in 1998 and has been rock pooling for creative talent ever since. The team started out in the beautiful cobbled streets of St Ives and slowly spread through Cornwall, but couldn’t stop there when there was a world of talent to be discovered and shared, and so they found their way to the Middle Eastern shores of Dubai. The creation of artist and entrepreneur Lyn Thompson, Whistlefish shows what a dedication to art can achieve. Following service in the Royal Navy, Lyn hung up her blue and whites in pursuit of her passion for painting in Cornwall. Local craft fairs soon bloomed into a boutique art brand, and with support from The Prince’s Trust, the first Whistlefish gallery opened in 1998 and Lyn was able to start sharing the imagination and zest that the independent designers, artists and illustrators radiated. After the life-changing loan from the Prince’s Trust, the Whistlefish team have kept a close relationship with the trust, each year pledging a donation from the sales of their Christmas cards so that not only the gift of Christmas is given. In 2015 they donated an amazing £15,000 to the Trust so

that they can continue to support the skills of young entrepreneurs. Whistlefish now has a collection of nine galleries across the south west, from the seaside streets of Penzance and Padstow to the hustle and bustle of Plymouth. There is even an online shop so that no matter where you are you can enjoy any of the affordable creations on offer. It’s clear from the collection of notebooks and cards that Lyn and the team understand the importance of the simple things. Whether it is scribbling a handwritten card, or jotting down a bucket list, Whistlefish wants people to take the time to enjoy the moment. To highlight this mantra Whistlefish is launching the campaign #TimeToWrite to help spark a writing renaissance in our current digital age. Everyone loves technology but sometimes we want to enjoy the etching of graphite pencils on sketchbook paper, or a calligraphy swirl of ink. This is the feeling you get when looking at the detailed collection of greeting cards and notebooks. It’s not just a way to make life easier; it is a way of living art. Among the collection you will find a range of art prints that will elevate any space with their views of sunset skies, captivating meadows, contemporary Londonscapes and coastal scenes. Each print is given a

You can pair these lovely cards with a selection of meticulously designed items that range from notelets to collection tins to beautifully crafted aprons before wrapping them in contemporary or traditionally printed giftwrap. Like brown paper packages with string these are just a few of our favourite things. Our personal favourites however, are the art mug with gift tins. There is just something endlessly

So with designs that cover all the bases and go from contemporary to traditional, delicate watercolour florals to striking acrylic coastal scenes, and a truly inspiring collection of Cornish town inspired prints, Whistlefish definitely has something for everyone. The Celtic connection Celebrated landscape artist Steve Slimm brings a sense of Cornwall’s rugged authenticity to his work.

A

rtist, poet and musician, Steve Slimm, while not strictly speaking a Celt, is convinced that his ancestry must root itself somewhere in Celtic heritage. Having turned up no further ancestral leads than Midland towns, he is nonetheless convinced that there must be a stronger connection, especially as on arriving in Penzance at the age of 17, it felt so much like coming home. Steve, an artist with an impressive portfolio, lives and breathes the ancient Cornish landscape and, through his work, his audience is touched by its rugged authenticity and wholeness. “Celtic land has remained essentially untouched for centuries, with only relatively small pockets of modern civilisation,” Steve muses. “It’s all about extremities: Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Cornwall, Brittany – places on the edge, away from city life and the maelstrom of humanity.” Although spanning several decades, Steve’s Bristol and Bath connection has intensified over recent years, through his relationship with Bristol artist Tom White at Clifton Fine Art. To mark their move into larger premises on Perry Road (the former Cube Gallery), Clifton Fine Art recently played host to a one-man exhibition of evocative work by Steve

Slimm, entitled Rich Beyond Compare. Including an album of his own music – of the same title and created for the show – the popular exhibition displayed the similarities between the processes in which Steve puts together both his music and his paintings. “My private studio practice as a musician is very similar to my painting – turn off the thinking mind, get on with playing (with sound or paint), keep going until lost in the process, then see what happens.” Indeed, while Steve paints landscapes, he explains, “I don’t paint places – I paint feelings. I paint the intimacy that exists between the observer and the thing closely observed – yet without actually looking… For me everything is about feeling.” Steve’s music, like his painting, is fresh, unadulterated and vibrant, yet grounded in something essentially and deeply human. Visit Steve’s website for more information on upcoming exhibitions.

Little Piece of Cornwall brings Cornwall’s finest independent retailers all together in one place, offering the many people who hold Cornwall close to their hearts the chance to savour it, wherever they may be, with products delivered direct to your door. Discover more Cornish makers like Laurie McCall on the website.

aurie McCall is a Cornish artist who creates bold and bright pieces in a range of mediums. Laurie’s work often holds a graphic quality stemming from his training as a graphic designer at Falmouth University. Being a keen surfer, working from his rural studio near Perranporth, Laurie’s art is often influenced by the coast, nature and the sea. His ‘Surfscape’ series invokes the dreamy surf conditions of his favourite Cornish beaches. His collection of simple wave images breaks down the shape and form of ocean waves into basic patterns of line and colour, resulting in unique pieces of contemporary art. Laurie also enjoys working in collage to create abstract compositions. Using found paper, vintage books and magazines, his collages combine contemporary ideas with materials from the past, giving rise to interesting visual juxtapositions. As well as selling his work at art and craft fairs across Cornwall, Laurie has just joined the recently launched Little Piece of Cornwall marketplace, finding himself in good company among the county’s many creative talents. He also takes on commissions, so feel free to contact him with your ideas. Where are you from and what do you do? I grew up on a farm in Perranporth but recently moved to Feock. As a keen surfer, beach lover and artist I like to create idealistic images of my favourite parts of the Cornish coast in a vibrant and unique style. Tell us one thing that inspires you more than anything about living in Cornwall. It has to be the sea; it changes all the time. One day it can be wild and unforgiving and the next it can be tranquil and still. The changing

ë ABOVE LEFT Laurie at work in his studio é ABOVE RIGHT Some of Laurie’s creations inspired by the Cornish coast

conditions, light and weather are a great source of inspiration for me, I could stare at the sea for hours! Why did you choose to sell through Little Piece of Cornwall? I thought it would be a unique opportunity to get my work out there, in front of a wider audience. It’s great to be able to sell my work alongside other Cornish made products. Would you rather fight one horse-sized seagull, or 100 seagull-sized horses? I’d have to say the horse-sized gull – one beak has to be better than 100, I’ve seen what those things can do to freshly bought pasty! What does the future hold? I hope to continue expanding my art business whilst staying here in Cornwall, drawing more beaches and creating more collages.

Health

Amanda Winwood discusses the truth about microbeads in exfoliators.

L

iving in Cornwall, I love being close to the sea. However, I am also all too aware of the damage created by plastic sea pollution. Microbeads in skincare represent up to 4% of ocean pollution. Microbeads are tiny pieces of plastic that are found in many beauty products such as shampoo and shower gel. What many people don’t realise is that they are also in toothpaste, face scrubs, foundation and sunscreen in nanoparticular form. Microbeads were designed to provide a cheaper alternative to natural exfoliants and utilise plastic beads of usually 1-5mm aimed at removing dead skin cells and leave the skin with a smooth surface. You need to use them more often than a natural exfoliant. Although they have been an issue for

some decades, the increased use of plastic for packaging and in skincare has resulted in a major pollution issue. They have recently made national press headlines because they are too small to be filtered by our sewage systems and are now being found in our oceans. Fish and other marine-based animals consume these microbeads and they end up in our food chain. Fish and birds have been found with substantial amounts of plastic in their digestive systems. Microbeads and plastics are affected by UV and the movement of the waves and are highly absorbent. When they enter the sea they absorb all toxins, so this is not good news. In one single shower it is estimated that up to 100,000 microbeads will enter the sewage system and ocean. As the dangers of microbeads are now becoming more publicly known, there is huge pressure for companies to remove microbeads from their products and find natural alternatives. New Government legislation aims to decrease the use of microbeads in skincare by 2020 significantly. A ban on the use of all microbeads should be the objective. At Made for Life by Spiezia Organics, we conform strictly to the Soil Association standards and use organic hand sifted chamomile stamen in our facial scrub. We use two different types of organic sugar to give two levels of exfoliation. Not a microbead in sight. Be part of making a positive change – if you would like to do your bit for the environment and still have smooth skin then load up the App available from www.banthemicrobead.org.
