You may be interested to discover that those trying their hand at surfing don t fall into the stereotypical demographic you’d expect, with over 60% in 25-45 age group, and 53% women. And more people are choosing to research and pre-book online before they leave home.

Not just that, there’s no better way to set yourself up for a day wandering the coast path than a hearty Apple Tree breakfast.
The café also serves lunch and homemade cakes, and is open every Thursday and Friday evening until 22nd September, with live music every Friday night, making it a great way to make the most of those balmy Cornish summer evenings. Cornwall is the perfect place to experience a relaxing spa in an incredible location. From clifftop retreats to countryside wellbeing, we visit some of our favourite places to unwind and tune out. WORDS BY

W
e are so lucky, here in Cornwall, to have such a choice when it comes to spas and treatments venues. We have adult-only spas ideal for couples or if you want to indulge in some me-time away from the children. Others cater for families so you can chill out while the children are happy playing in the pool. Many are part of luxury hotels so you can extend your experience from a relaxing day to a decadent weekend or combine with lunch or afternoon tea for a foodie treat. More and more, Cornish spas are becoming the destination of choice for those wanting to switch off but still enjoy a spectacular location, and there is a significant amount of investment being made to ensure our spas are up there with the very best. MERCHANTS MANOR in Falmouth has recently undergone a large refurbishment, including the addition of a new swimming pool, gym and wellbeing area. You can let all your cares slip away with a treatment in one of the Linen Rooms. Morocconinspired tiled floors cover underfloor heating and heated beds
radiate that ever-important warmth during your treatment while treatment products from local company Inlight fill the room with the heavenly scent of palmarosa and lavender. Treatments at Merchants are based on centuries-old techniques, drawn from the experience of their world-travelled therapists. For the more energetic, there is a brand new gym and a decent sized swimming pool. A charming barrel sauna sits outside in a pretty courtyard area with a menthol-infused steam room just off the pool. Children are allowed to use the pool during certain times, which means those who want a gentle swim can avoid any exuberant splashing, but families can enjoy themselves as well.

OPENING FEATURE | RURAL RELAXATION changes from a palette of lush greens during the spring and summer months through to the gentle russets of autumn and winter. A fully equipped gym coupled with a dry sauna and a steam room, enriched with essential oils, means you can’t fail to leave here feeling relaxed. The Cornwall also offers a range of spa breaks so you can totally unwind, putting off returning to reality for that little bit longer. To the north, in St Columb, RETALLACK RESORT AND SPA offers a unique experience. Its luxury, self-catering lodges are a brilliant place to stay with family or friends and with an onsite Wake and Aqua Park, and a FlowRider, children can’t fail to be entertained. So, with the small ones happy, what more of an excuse do you need to pamper yourself? The ESYA spa includes a swimming pool, gym and even fitness classes – at Retallack you can work up a sweat before winding down with one of the transformative treatments. BELOW Relax in rural splendour at the Budock Vean
If a town location doesn’t appeal then Cornwall is home to some splendid countryside retreats – think lush green gardens, still lakes and tree canopies in which to lie back and relax. Amongst our favourites is the BUDOCK VEAN , near Mawnan Smith. The swimming VEAN, pool is housed in a cavernous conservatory with a large open fire at one end that gives a warming focal point on winter days as you rest back on one of the steamer loungers. For warmer days an outdoor hot tub means you can bask in blissful bubbles while watching the clouds scud by. The pamper day at Budock Vean is one of the best we have experienced. Envelope yourself in a sumptuous robe, experience a superb treatment from one the experienced therapists and then sit down to a delicious lunch overlooking the 65-acre estate. If you have enough energy you can even stroll through the grounds down to the Helford river. urther along the south coast, you ll find THE CORNWALL HOTEL AND CLEARING SPA . BEAUTY AND THE BEACH If you’re looking for an adults-only spa then the ultra chic, purpose-built and environmentally conscious hotel and spa, perched on the cliff on Mawgan Porth, the SCARLET, should be your destination of choice. In this setting, you can’t help but unwind and forget about the rest of the world. The way the site interacts with the landscape it occupies is a master stroke. Smooth curves and straight lines seamlessly blend inside and out, while an internal uncovered courtyard echoes a Roman villa from the future. The pool is chemical free,
cleaned by the reeds. The whole place has been perfectly realised with luxury and comfort in mind, down to the very last detail. Sat on the clifftop, a stay here feels almost like a spiritual experience, heightened by the array of treatments on offer. The spa focuses on holistic wellbeing and every person’s experience is unique. Our favourite is the Hammam. If you’ve never tried this unique treatment then you should – an invigorating, rehydrating scrub is rinsed off in warm water leaving your skin soft and your muscles relaxed.

For a family-friendly, coastal hotel and spa the POLURRIAN BAY HOTEL is hard to beat. So much easier to relax when you know your children are being well looked after close by. From clifftop to beachside, the ST MICHAELS HOTEL AND SPA is truly stunning. You’re literally just a stone’s throw from the beach at Gyllyngvase for morning runs and a brand new spa and gym has opened as we go to print. t’s no surprise that Cornwall is regularly voted as one of the most popular UK holiday destinations. Of course, the success of TV exports like Poldark and Doc Martin has certainly helped to increase its international appeal, with ever more visitors from America, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Spain. But the biggest star is Cornwall itself, boasting an enduring beauty, replete with wide sandy beaches dotted across the stunning, varied coastline. North Cornwall is as popular as ever with families for traditional bucket and spade holidays, also attracting older couples and young professionals who can take advantage of quieter times and off-peak pricing by visiting out of season. It’s the perfect location for enjoying a short break to indulge in Michelin starred food, fantastic walking, mild Cornish seasons and a plethora of active watersports. With this in mind, an investment property in this location is a solid one. If you are in love with north Cornwall and dream of owning your own slice of heaven, local estate agent John Bray and Partners is the go-to agent for properties in Rock, Daymer Bay, Polzeath and Port Isaac. With the dominant share of properties in the area, the team have 45 years’ experience under their belt, and a successful holiday letting sister agency John Bray Cornish Holidays (www.johnbraycornishholidays.co.uk). With over 300 self-catering cottages and offices in both Rock and Port Isaac, John Bray are on hand to share their expertise with would-be investors, and are the first to hear about investment opportunities in this holiday hotspot. “Gone are the days when you could recycle granny’s old furniture into your holiday home ‘for the guests to use’,” says Josephine Ashby, Sales Director at John Bray. “Today’s holidaymakers are a discerning bunch and

expectations run high – they expect to stay somewhere as good, if not better, than their own home, and owners that invest in design for their holiday properties see a return in higher occupancy and rental prices.” “Invest in making it a home, not just a house,” says Liz Berman (www.ckliving.co.uk). “Lovely interiors command greater care and respect from guests and higher rental prices.” She suggests investing in a few special statement pieces like an antique leather chair (to add warmth and patina to a room as well as being hard wearing and comfortable), and combining them with less expensive items like a sisal rug from Ikea. This sentiment is echoed by interior designer Tanya Leech (www.tanyaleech.co.uk). “Everything needs to be fresh, clean and undamaged,” says Tanya. “What might seem like a sentimental old friend to you will just look like a tired and tatty chair, cushion or lamp to your visitors”. She advises to “look at the interior as if seeing it for the first time; get into the mindset that people renting your home are your customers and present it beautifully for them.”

| HOME “Let the building speak for itself,” explains Marion Lichtig (www.marionlichtig.com). “The aim is to make your holiday home feel as if it has evolved over time, with the careful balance of the contemporary and the classic, so a space looks like it belongs to the present, although incorporating elements of the past.” Since north Cornwall is blessed with so many beautiful beaches, it’s no surprise holidaymakers long for a beachy, relaxed vibe in their holiday home. A sure winner for that coastal feel is to use a backdrop of white or neutral tones. “Milky whites or soft grey tones work perfectly to create a cool, calm backdrop, allowing your colours to pop in a subtle way,” says Nicola O’Mara (www.nicolaomara.com). Consider muted shades of greens and blues – even the classic inky blue will work. “You can introduce your colours with furniture and accessories, letting the neutral be your constant theme throughout the space in walls, ceilings and woodwork.” “Don’t shy away from the unusual or quirky; in fact, positively embrace it,” echoes Elaine Skinner of Camellia Interiors (www.camelliainteriors.co.uk). “Be brave, make it feel like a home, not a run-of-the-mill show house. It’s about creating a relaxed environment and adding texture and colour to give it a livedin, organic feel with a strong design perspective, that will make your guests feel instantly at home. I am a strong believer that no two homes should look the same.” With a potentially high footfall of guests each year, you need to think practical and durable. Claire Alderson of Pebble Design Interiors (www.pebbledesigninteriors.com) advises to start with the floor. “It sets the mood for the rest of the house and will make choosing other items of furniture and accessories easier.” That does not mean flooring has to be expensive, just the right bleached wood colour tone and look, for a home by the sea. “A lot of high-end beach houses in Cornwall are now replacing wood and carpet with good quality wood-
look vinyl. The latest ranges from Forbo and Amtico look as good as wood and are far more practical if you are renting out your property.” “Buy quality, hardwearing furniture but bear in mind that items will need replacing regularly,” adds Elaine Skinner. “Don’t economise on the basics; good-quality sheets, comfy beds and fluffy towels will last and be remembered by your guests.” For new builds, the vogue is for large contemporary windows to make the most of the sea views. Tanya Leech recommends “keeping window dressings simple and understated, especially if you have a wonderful view, and be sure to install blackout blinds in all bedrooms.” “Let’s not forget that after all, it is your home too. Decorating a holiday home is a fantastic opportunity to be more playful with your design than you would be at home,” exclaims Lucy Orr (www.lucyorr.co.uk). “The aim is to lift you and your guests out of the mundane when staying. Even if you’re tackling a small space, a lack of square footage does not mean the space has to be bland.” She advises to accentuate the space using bold colours or fun wallpapers with large-scale patterns, and to use mirrors. “They double the visual space and reflect light and colour.”

esigned by award-winning architect, Stan Bolt, this cleanlined property is a rarity on the market, and we don’t expect it to stay there for long. It’s modern to the last touch and, although we’ve come to expect it from the John Bray stable, the attention to detail that’s evident throughout Tresithney continues to take our breath away. The house overlooks the Camel estuary, utilising a reverse-plan style of living that affords the living space maximum exposure to the sensational sea views. elow, five double bedrooms have direct access to the patio and pool, with four of them enjoying their own en-suite. The interior is spacious and open plan, with a separate study that’s perfect if you’re bringing the office home. There s also a self-contained games room downstairs that’s great for the kids, and underfloor heating throughout, so whichever room you’re in, if it’s cold on the outside, you almost certainly won’t know about it.

During the summer months, with the pool so close to the luxurious living quarters, you couldn’t be blamed for staying put and soaking up the Cornish sun in private. However, with Rock beach just moments away, with its wealth of watersports and local restaurants, we highly recommend venturing out, even if only for an afternoon! In fact, Rock has become somewhat of a hub for watersports enthusiasts and is extremely popular for its fantastic sailing waters. Both Rock and Padstow are sheltered by the Camel estuary, meaning that whether you want to tack your way from port to port, hop in a canoe or try your hand at SUP, you won t find a better place to do it. Perhaps you prefer to while away an afternoon with a leisurely round of golf? Only a handful of courses in the UK can match the nearby St Enodoc Golf Course in offering and its stunning coastal location, with facilities including an 18-hole course; a restaurant and bar; a fitness studio and an indoor swimming pool.
Finally, when the sun goes down and you simply can’t be bothered to cook, you’ll be spoiled for choice by an excellent range of restaurants, all within easy reach. Choose between the Michelin star restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac, or the equivalent under Paul Ainsworth, No. 6, Padstow. Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant in Watergate Bay and Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow are also great choices. All you need to do is decide what you fancy! Tresithney is currently used as a second home, however it would make an equally fantastic holiday let, with a location that’s top of the list when it comes to holidaying Cornwall.

ome to a fantastic beach and one of Europe’s most renowned surf breaks, Polzeath overlooks a magnificent stretch of golden sand, with Pentire head to the north and Stepper Point to the west. This beautiful part of the rugged north coast was once a haunt of the late poet laureate, Sir John Betjeman, who fondly versed about the ‘Seaweed smells from sandy caves’ and the ‘Lark song and sea sounds in the air and splendour, splendour everywhere’. Well known for staggering sunsets as well as its beachy shops, restaurants and cafés, Polzeath is the epitome of bucket and spade holidays, with a buzzy beach that inspires holidaymakers to come back, year after year. And, for those who like to keep active, whether that’s on the water or with feet firmly planted on the ground, there’s an abundance of watersports available, along with exceptional cycling and golf opportunities nearby and some of Cornwall’s most spectacular walks atop the South West Coast Path. With the sheltered Camel estuary just around the corner with further opportunities for exploration, Polzeath is the ideal destination to buy your own slice of contemporary beachside living.

As you step inside and appreciate the property’s modern interior, you’ll be enthralled by its light and bright, openplan living space; by the bespoke Bulthaup kitchen that’s perfect for cooking up a storm and the balcony that’s great for watching the seething storms of winter roll in. There are four bedrooms, two of which have their own en-suites, and for those who fancy making the most of Polzeath’s surf scene, there’s additional storage outside for the boards, as well as an ever convenient outdoor shower to stop the kids treading the beach inside!
Stylish, contemporary and immaculately presented, Outrigger enjoys a reverse, open-plan living space, complemented by a stunning NEFF kitchen and four generous bedrooms, three of which have en-suites. A woodburner in the main living space makes things super-cosy in the colder months, while traditional features like exposed wooden beams help infuse a sense of warmth into the otherwise cool and coastal décor. During the summer, as the interior really comes into its own, you can step out onto the patio and soak up the spectacular sea views. While you’re at it, why not light the barbeque and pop a bottle of something cold? After all, there’s no better way to quench that sea air thirst.
Marford – £1.95m This substantial property presents a number of development opportunities. Having historically been used for multiple purposes and with a fish and chip shop and pasty shop currently trading on the ground floor, the current pro ect, when complete, will create five apartments, each with wooden flooring and two with uninterrupted sea views. Of course, subject to the necessary permissions, a complete redevelopment is entirely possible, meaning that, whichever way you spin it, Marford presents a completely unique investment opportunity, especially given its proximity to the beach!

TOP Polzeath is one of the UK’s top surfing hotspots INSET Restor Plot, an exciting development plot with planning for two stunning coastal homes TOP A growing trend in property investment is fractional ownership, as is the case with Atlantic House
Restor Plot – £750,000 This development plot, currently a threebedroom dormer bungalow with sea views, is ust a five-minute walk from the beach. During the busy holiday season, families can choose to escape the madding crowd and instead enjoy a barbeque in the sun on the large garden and terrace. The current planning permissions allow for two striking, semi-detached dwellings, which together will offer nine bedrooms’ accommodation, with parking and detached garages to the rear.
Cranfield 3 – £695,000 This charming three bedroom property just moments from the beach is typical of life by the coast, with a light, modern interior that remains cosy in the colder months. It’s also typical of life in Polzeath, and puts families in prime position to make the most of their beach holiday, with National Trust walks and spectacular coastal scenery right on the doorstep. Cranfield is currently used as a successful holiday let, making it a fantastic opportunity to get in on one of Cornwall’s most sought after locations.
Beach House – £549,000 Just a minute’s walk from the beach, with balcony sea views and a lawned garden that opens onto a stream, Beach House is exactly what it says on the tin. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms make this recently converted pair of flats a wonderful family holiday home, perfect if you’re looking for something to lock up and leave. A huge advantage of life at the Beach House is that it comes with ample parking, which can be a real asset on the narrow streets of coastal Cornwall.
Atlantic House – From £115,000 The first of their kind in Polzeath, the apartments at Atlantic House are for sale on a shared basis. Each fraction has a 999-year lease, providing exclusive use of your own luxury apartment for five weeks of the year. Each has unrivalled sea views, direct access to the beach, as well as three bedrooms and two bathrooms. They also come fully furnished, serviced and with the added benefit of hotel, restaurant, bar and management facilities. Longterm storage is available just ten minutes away, as well as wet gear storage on site, meaning you don’t need to drag your wet, sandy surf kit up to the apartment after a long day on the beach. So, if you’re in the market for a life by the sea, be sure to keep an eye on the everevolving portfolio of prestigious, Cornish property from John Bray and Partners.

One of the many things we admire about this company is its insistence on a dedicated in-house designer, enabling the team to ensure that their rigorous standards are always maintained across every project. Throughout each build, Legacy keeps how people will move through the space at the forefront of every decision, leaving no element to chance and creating a home that’s a pleasure to live in. Testament to all this is Thirty Six, a selection of one, two and three bedroom apartments nestled between Fistral and the Gannel estuary, commanding enviable views that drink in the world-renowned Fistral beach. From the ground up, these apartments ooze luxury and in the main living space, you ll find wide-plank, engineered wooden flooring by oodpecker, as well as underfloor heating, which together allow the space to blend modern, coastal features with a warm, traditional feel. In the bedrooms, where we all appreciate something a little softer underfoot, there are 100% wool carpets, creating a cosy, inviting atmosphere; something you’ll appreciate each and every morning as you step out of bed. Through to the Cornish-built Treyone itchens and you ll be hard pressed to find a higher specification. Treyone has been building kitchens of unrivalled quality since 1978, meaning you’re well set to make the most of ornwall s famed produce. hy not pop to the local fishmonger and wow your guests with a touch of foodie flare o what s life on the entire peninsula like Given that it’s one of the area’s most sought
after locations, and that Thirty Six enjoys astounding ocean views, there’s a wonderful feeling of exclusivity to be enjoyed here. The peninsula abounds with coastal walks and beaches, meaning you can really make the most of being close to the coast. And if spotting wildlife is something you take pleasure in, you’ll be enraptured by the sightings of dolphins that are common on Cornwall’s coast – be sure to keep those binoculars handy! Keep a pair near your balcony too; from here you can watch the surf roll in and enjoy some fantastic spectators sport as the locals take to the water. And, if you fancy giving it a go yourself but you don’t want to drag wet, sandy gear into your lovely new apartment, worry not! Thirty Six offers a communal surf shower and individual store, so you can stow all your kit and rinse those sandy feet before you even enter the building. There’s much and more to be said about life by the sea, and when you’re living it in an apartment at Thirty Six, it really is all it’s cracked up to be!

Embrace the Cornish lifestyle like never before with a luxurious and contemporary lodge from Charteroak.
olidaying in Cornwall is not only a fantastic way to escape city life; it’s a chance to immerse yourself in a lifestyle that’s found nowhere else in the UK. As opposed to the city, where life is dominated by industry and where to live is to be busy – whether you’re commuting to work or going out for a drink – life in Cornwall runs at a much gentler pace. The only downside with holidaying here is that, by the time you settle into your accommodation and ease yourself into life by the sea, whether it’s in a plush hotel or charming bed and breakfast, it’s almost always nearly time to go again! For this reason, owning a luxury lodge in some of the most beautiful reaches of Cornwall isn’t just a fantastic way to holiday or to gain additional income, it’s an investment in family holidays to come; a guarantee that, as soon as you cross the border and arrive at your lodgings, you’ll feel immediately at ease, in the comfort of your own second home. Luxury holiday specialist, Charteroak, has spent the last decade creating stunning holiday homes in some of the most
spectacular locations, in the south west of England. In fact, the company’s approach, known as ‘the Charteroak experience’, delivers the very best quality lodges, providing you not only with memorable holidays for years to come, but with a second home that yields excellent rental performance. Charteroak holds two sites in Cornwall – Stonerush Lakes and Southern Halt – and each has new lodges available to buy now with prices ranging from £194,950 to £269,950. Both set in the unspoiled south of Cornwall, loved for its serene seascapes, beaches and the aforementioned relaxed way of life, a lodge at either of these locations puts you in great stead to maximise your time in Cornwall. Stonerush Lakes, a 28-acre site that offers a wide range of lodges, each with individual character, is hidden in the local landscape. Each lodge enjoys a wonderful location, whether it’s next to a lake, beside the fast flowing stream or set back into a sun-drenched hillside. The emphasis here is on contemporary family living, and each home is designed to enhance its surroundings, capturing uninterrupted

And, for those of you who like to sample the delights of fresh, local produce, there’s plenty on offer in the outlying villages that surround Southern Halt, most of which have their own charming country pub. life balance
With the pace of day-to-day life ever increasing, we discover how Holistic Health can help you manage stress and learn to relax.
L
ife, at times, can be overwhelming, and despite our best efforts, stress can build up and cause a wide range of physical and emotional difficulties, from anxiety and depression to sleep problems and relationship issues. Recognising that life’s challenges can be tough, Redruth-based Holistic Health is offering a range of stress management courses and therapies, including advice on lifestyle and wellbeing choices. The business is the brainchild of Stress Management and Life Skills consultant Kate King, who has worked as a registered holistic health practitioner in the NHS for over 15 years. Now, Kate wants to offer these services to the wider community. “As a working mum of two young boys, I completely understand the difficulty of trying to juggle work, family and the challenges that life throws at us. It’s easy to often feel like we are losing the plot. Looking after yourself is something that sometimes needs practice.” Combining her extensive knowledge, skills and experience within physical and mental health services, Kate offers a range of stress-management therapies
on an individual, group and corporate basis, helping to improve awareness of stress-related physical and mental health conditions, as well as promoting wellbeing and relaxation. “Being able to take a step back and put things in perspective gives you the opportunity to reevaluate your life,” adds Kate, who is following her own advice after setting up her business with the help from the Outset Cornwall business start-up programme. With work-related stress on the rise and young people facing increasing pressure to perform well, Holistic Health also works with organisations and staff as well as colleges and universities, providing tailored group skills and information sessions. “Learning new skills can help manage the stress of daily life,” explains Kate. “Less stress makes you happier, healthier and more refreshed, and helps you regain your life balance.”

The Isles of Scilly are warming up for autumn, when fans of food and footpaths will flock to the islands for two major festivals.
T ABOVE Lobster straight off the boat RIGHT One of the best ways to experience Scilly is on foot at Walk Scilly Weekend BELOW Tuck into the freshest seafood at the Taste of Scilly food festival
he Taste of Scilly festival is back in September with a month-long celebration of the unique low-food miles, slowfood culture of the famously unspoilt archipelago, just off the coast of Cornwall. There’s a fresh foodie experience to savour every day, from lobster feasts to Scillonian produce markets, from beach barbeques to pasty-making workshops, from evening supper boats to Taste of Scilly cocktails and cream teas. ocal bakers, brewers, chefs, farmers, fishermen and food and drink producers will come together to share their stories, passions and creativity. There’ll be tours of small working farms, with farmers and their families revealing what it takes to build a successful artisan food business on the islands. Local chefs will demonstrate how to bake the perfect scone, make a mouthwatering pasty, and pick and preserve herbs. Look out, too, for food pop-ups around Tresco, sizzling Scilly beach barbeques at Karma St artin s, and special five-course tasting dinners at the Star Castle Hotel and Juliet’s Garden Restaurant & Bar. Sample hot lobster, paella and pulled pork at the Bryher Food Festival, and don’t miss the threeday Beer, Cider, Gin and Rum Festival at the Seven Stones Inn on St Martin’s. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s another autumn festival to enjoy on the islands. The nights might be drawing in, but autumn’s the perfect time of year to explore the Isles of Scilly at Walk Scilly Weekend in October. It’s a chance to experience the islands at their most magical and discover their wild beauty on a long weekend of themed, guided walks with experts who live and breathe Scilly. Get up close with birds and wildlife unique to the archipelago, enjoy top-to-toe rambles across all five inhabited islands and search out the ruins and legends of long-ago abandoned islands. Try your hand at extreme rockpooling with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, meander Mediterranean-style around Tresco, take flight on a birdwatching boat trip, and hear stories of the lighthouses you can spot on a stroll at sunset.

IN THE BEST We seek advice from the Blue Chip Holidays’ portfolio development team, to help you make the right decision when investing in a holiday home.
T
here are reasons why you’ll only find four and five-star properties in the s finest locations in the lue hip olidays portfolio. This high standard is adhered to because the portfolio development team know that the demand exists for a premium, self-catering experience and owners who meet this demand reap fantastic rewards. o, with this in mind, try to find a property with four and five-star potential, even if there s some work to be done to get there. The team will guide you on the improvements that will maximise your income pro ection, and if you re planning to use your holiday home as your own idyllic retreat, focus on popular features that you will en oy as well. It s easy to be recommended the best places to buy a holiday home for letting but location is an important factor for you, too. If you market your property with lue hip olidays you ll have a generous allocation of owner weeks but you ll also be able to take advantage of the last minute licence , which is your opportunity to snap up an owner s stay if your property is available last minute. Therefore, it s important to pick a prime location that you ll en oy visiting so that you can savour every opportunity to en oy your property. hen considering the best places to buy, it s wise to consider up-and-coming areas as well as established holiday hotspots.
roperties in less long-established holiday let locations are likely to be more affordably priced, giving you a higher return on your investment and greater potential for capital appreciation. hile it s fine to see a holiday home investment as a smart financial move for today, it s always good to consider how your investment could serve you in the future. lue hip olidays has worked with many property owners who have invested in a holiday property with long-term goals in mind and the team are always impressed by what the owners can achieve. If you dream of relocating in your retirement, investing in a holiday home now can help fund this move. erhaps you re investing purely for profit, or searching for an asset that will increase in value If any of these ring true then lue hip olidays can help and you could soon turn your long-running dream into a very rewarding reality.

ith the often rugged beauty of Cornwall drawing visitors from near and far, it is a true delight to stumble across a country house. They provide a stunning contrast to the wild scenery surrounding them, with their lovingly restored architecture and expertly kept gardens. One such example is the handsome Trereife House and Gardens on the outskirts of Newlyn and Penzance – make sure you pronounce it Treave so that you blend in with the locals! In the six years since its appearance on the Channel 4 series, Country House Rescue, Trereife has become a successful bed and breakfast and a stunning location for weddings and events.
ABOVE Trereife is a Queen Anne manor and home to the Le Grice family BELOW Enjoy the summer sun in the glorious gardens of Trereife
Until October, the gardens are now open on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons, with house tours at 2pm. The best part is, admission to the gardens costs just £3 per adult and £1 per child. For tea and a tour, it’s only £10! The history of Trereife House is fascinating. The Queen Anne front is actually the back of an Elizabethan farmhouse, which can be seen from the cobbled courtyard to the rear. Overlooking this are two self-catering apartments and Trereife also offers bed and breakfast. The gardens include formal and informal areas and provide a peaceful haven in which to wander and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The walled garden contains medlar trees, the fruits of which are used to make jam. What’s more, the former tennis lawn is the perfect spot for a marquee, with Mount’s Bay visible in the distance. So, whether you want to spend the afternoon exploring the grounds with a cake and coffee, fancy a relaxing break in the heart of west Penwith or want to hold your special day amidst elegance and romance, Trereife is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

eorge Melly, Donovan, Barbara Dickson, Elkie Brooks, Billy Bragg and Fairport Convention are among the famous names to have graced the St Ives September Festival since it began in 1978. But, as well as attracting the stars, the 15-day festival provides a valuable late-season tourist boost for the town. While many seaside towns are sliding quietly into autumn, more than 300 music and arts events ensure St Ives remains vibrant deep into September. The volunteerrun festival opens on 9th September with the first of two aturdays packed with street entertainment. From folk music to films, poetry to pottery, theatre, open art studios, walks, talks and a pit-fired ceramic demonstration alongside the surfers on Porthmeor Beach, St Ives Festival delivers a broad spectrum of events. Guildhall attractions include four BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners: John McCusker, Show of Hands, Looe-based Sam Kelly of The Changing Room and Cara Dillon. And The Ronnie Scott’s All-Stars, from the famous London jazz club, return for two more Western Hotel nights, with a Soho Songbook and 100 years of Ella Fitzgerald. Steve Knightley of Festival patrons Show of Hands, who have packed out the Royal Albert Hall, considers St Ives a “mustplay event”, adding: “We can’t wait to be back.” Ireland’s Cara Dillon, who appeared in 2012, recalled: “A fantastic show. After the concert the whole band and I ended up in

an improvised cabaret sketching session in a painting club until 2am!” That sums up a festival where the unexpected can be round the next corner, in the next gallery or pub – much of it free. Norway Square has become a festival tradition, with poet Bob Devereux hosting lunchtime sessions since 1981. One Square regular, poet and singer Ray Turner, was so smitten that he and his wife moved to Cornwall. Ray explained: “In 1995 we discovered the St Ives September Festival because we wanted to see (singersongwriter) John Otway and we’ve been coming ever since. Finally we moved from London to Penzance in 2009 because we wanted to be closer to the festival.” It has that sort of enduring effect on people!
