A look at the glamorous side of camping in Cornwall. WORDS BY
I’
HANNAH TAPPING
ve been camping for as long as I can remember. Trips to a farm site in St Ives in our beloved Comma van, where my sister and I both fell in love with the farm dog Flossy, were our family holidays. We only travelled from The Lizard but in those days it felt like a world away. Then came Guide camp, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Outward Bound – I can still recall that distinct smell of slightly damp canvas that emitted from the basic orange ridge tents that were standard issue in the 80s. The 0s, and my first o as a ournalist, saw me testing more modern, state-of-the-art of camping equipment. Gone was the canvas, replaced by lightweight nylon and an unforgettable solo trip to the campsite on St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, where my pitch was so close to the sea I could almost dip a toe in the water from my tent. The ‘naughties’ arrived and with it my beloved Type 2 VW camper van, Betsy. She was a splendid surf bus and a comfy bed on many a beach party night, she even had her own wine cupboard! Heady days spent waking up to the sound and sight of the Cornish surf will stay with me forever. A baby on the way meant I could no longer fit ehind the steering wheel and so etsy very sadly had to go, but the camping ‘gene’
in me couldn’t rest. On a whim I bought an old four-berth caravan that served us well for many a splendid trip with our young family, including my beloved St Ives. As the children grew and we were able to be more adventurous again the call of the iconic VW camper couldn’t be ignored. Whether it’s a whole week away or ust an impromptu night, our new van has taken us all over Cornwall. We don’t go far, but then in Cornwall you don’t need to! But camping’s not for everyone – friends tell me they can’t bare the thought of being cold and damp and having an uncomfortable nights’ sleep. How far from the truth that can be! With the right equipment and a few top tips, your camping will be glamorous rather than hideous! If you have your own tent, caravan or van then you’re halfway there. Invest in an electric hook up (they do these for tents these days) and you’ll never be cold as you run a little electric heater. I binned the sleeping bags years ago and we now have a camping set of soft, cosy duvets and pillows. We also take lots of lovely cushions and blankets (www. atlanticblankets.com), great in the van for bedtime, but also lovely to snuggle in to as you watch the sun go down.

Camping is all about the great outdoors after all, so we always make sure we are dressed for the elements. My essential camping kit includes a down acket and wooly hat (www. finisterre.com and a pair of sheepskin boots (www.celticandco.com). Everything is better in life with a warm head and cosy toes and it means I can sit outside that little bit longer to watch the final rays of sun drop ehind the ocean. Cornwall has some amazing campsites, often perched on the clifftops with magnificent views and if you choose the right ones, many have shower facilities to rival those of top hotels. Don’t be put off camping with children, it can be one of the best experiences if you’re well prepared. Again, lots of warm clothes will keep the little ones happy while they play with their friends. Bicycles are a must – in fact both of my little ones learned to ride without stabilisers while camping – and plenty of activities to keep them entertained. Badminton and boules are our camping games of choice. Along with a pack of cards and a stash of audio books it’s not long before the dreaded digital deto ust doesn t seem to matter anymore. My children love the fact that when we camp close to the sea they can walk back to the site without the bother of shoes. Snuggled in their camp chairs, sipping hot chocolate with sandy toes after a long day on the beach is theirs idea of heaven! We don’t skimp on the cooking either when we’re camping. Whipping up a batch of pancake mixture doesn’t take long if you’re prepared and what better way to start the day than with a pile of pancakes and crispy bacon from the barbeque. Even better if you have a friend like we do who always arrives on camping weekends armed with a huge fresh cake and eggs from her chickens! Lunches do tend to be pasties (well we are in Cornwall after all) and at the end of the day the ‘men and oys are put on ar e ue and campfire duty (if the site allows). Many Cornish campsites have great onsite shops selling local produce so there’s no battling with busy supermarkets – giving more time for us ladies to sip on a cold glass of Camel Valley that’s been chilling in the gas fridge. Slightly se ist, grant you ut men love fire, and am holiday after all!

| COVER FEATURE f you ust can t ring yourself to camp in the traditional sense but love the idea of the experience – sharing time with friends, gathered around a campfire, toasting marshmallows and retelling the tales of the day – then you’re in luck. Cornwall now has some amazing ‘glamping’ sites. This growing trend, sees little portable buildings and tents popping up in the most stunning of places, as visitors to Cornwall are looking to experience all of the enefits of outdoor living, with none of the downsides. From yurts, tipis and safari tents to shepherds huts and wooden cabins, these amazing spaces are camping at its most glamorous ou no longer have to sacrifice comfort or facilities for staying in the great outdoors. For example, Wigwam® Holidays Bodrugan (www.wigwamholidays.com/ bodrugan.co.uk , near Mevagissey, offers en-suite glamping accommodation in warm camping ca ins complete with firepits and car-free site small enough for children to be left to explore. There is even a heated indoor pool and sauna onsite – turn to page 54 to read more.
If you decide to invest in your own canvas tent, teepee or cabin, then the addition of a portable wood burning stove from a company live Anevay (www.anevaystoves. com) will keep you cosy in all weathers. With space for a stove-top kettle, a steaming cup of coffee will never be far off. If you have your own land, then why not look at putting a cabin or wagon onsite. This creates a sense of openness and space, as the living area leads on to the terrace allowing you to enjoy the views with a glass of wine from the cellar, and perhaps even take a stroll around the well-kept grounds as well. Located within the pretty village of Feock and close by to Truro, Porthgwidden has all the amenities close to hand, if you can tear yourself away from the sea that is!

t is not often that properties on Polwheveral Creek come up for sale, and we are sure this one won’t be on the market for long! Polwheveral is a tributary of the magical Helford river, home to Daphne Du Maurier’s famous novel, Frenchman’s Creek. Living here would truly provide a Swallows and Amazons lifestyle. Trenant itself is a beautiful contrast of old and new – the original cottage has a spectacular oak-framed extension that offers bright and airy accommodation. The extension is also self-contained and so gives the option for lucrative holiday letting income, either separately or in combination with the cottage. Many of the traditional features have been retained in the cottage ere you will find a spacious sitting/dining room, warmed by a log burner and the beautiful kitchen comes complete with an Aga. Upstairs there is a generous master suite and two further bedrooms, so plenty of room for a family. The extension has two mezzanines in its apex, one set out as a bedroom and the other as a reading area, a lovely place in which to relax with a good book and a coffee after a day on the water. Outside, the garden is a joy to behold with winding paths and a raised deck, perfect for an evening cocktail whilst admiring the view over the creek below. A nearby footpath gives easy reach to the foreshore – these are some of the best sailing waters in the country with the renowned Helford river leading out into Falmouth Bay, making it an ideal home for the keen sailor.
Although a hidden gem, Trenant is tranquil rather than remote. The nearby village of Constantine offers a very broad range of facilities, with a number of shops and pubs including the award-winning Trengilly Wartha Inn. The cosmopolitan town of Falmouth is only a few miles away, as are some of ornwall s finest eaches Either as a home or a holiday cottage, Trenant is a property where memories are just waiting to be made.

Jo Eldridge, founder of Jo & Co, reflects on her first three years in business and how her store has become a go-to destination in Cornwall.
é ABOVE Jo’s store has become a mecca for anyone updating their interior ì INSET Jo Eldridge, founder of Jo & Co
When did you open your shop and what kind of store is it? “I opened the store in December 2014. I always planned to open a lifestyle store, but to start with, I wanted to just play it safe by selling a few interior pieces. Once I knew our market, we began to expand our collections. Now we sell a great mix of things I love, whether it’s homeware, beauty, womenswear, gifts, even upholstered furniture. “We have some lovely customers that return to us again and again for a particular brand, such as Wanderlust Life or Neom, but in general I think people come to us for a good browse, and just for the experience of being here.” Why did you open a store? “It’s always been my dream to have a store, but I never really thought it was possible. Then, when I was six months pregnant, the opportunity came up at the awksfield site, and it suddenly got me thinking. Although it wasn’t the best timing, my husband said ‘Go for it’, and we’ve never looked back. I took early maternity leave from my job, and started to plan.” Jo also designed the store. She explains: “My husband Tom is a great carpenter, so between us (along with a few builders and electricians) we managed to turn an industrial building into what it is today.”
What makes Jo & Co unique? “Everything! We really are different, and we’re always evolving and changing. I think that’s why people keep coming back. There’s always something different from week to week. In terms of what inspires me, I’m loving the beach vibe at the moment, but that’s probably because it’s winter and I’m desperate for some sun!” What have you learnt in the past three years? “Oh my, a huge amount. I was so naive in the early days. I have my business head on much more now. I’ve also had to teach myself how to switch off. On Fridays I try to shut down my computer and forget about everything until the next week. It’s important that my family has my full attention without the distraction of emails.” What’s next for Jo&Co? “Well, after a very successful year of selling our furniture, we are excited to announce that we’ll be opening a furniture showroom this spring. We can’t wait for it to open!”

So, at the end of a long day exploring beaches and throwing yourself into all the activities that Cornwall has to offer, you can sit back and relax to the backdrop of rolling countryside and panoramic views of the night sky. ample space for the whole family to stay together, with open rooms and glorious views, you’re sure to have an enjoyable stay. It’s a joint effort between the whole family at North Coast Holiday Cottages to create the perfect experience for their guests, and this really shines through in the care and attention that goes into your stay. Furthermore, being open all year round means the cottages have a dedicated team of staff, who are truly passionate about their jobs, which in turn means you receive the highest level of customer service. Natalie tells us: “we’re adapting our business this year by creating a wedding venue, and will be able to offer exclusive rentals of the cottages so all your family and friends can stay and enjoy the celebration together.” Emphasising what lies at the heart of the company, having an amazing time with friends and family.

A SERVICE

F
or more than 25 years Cornish Horizons has been successfully letting holiday cottages throughout Cornwall. Not only is the team committed to offering the highest possible levels of customer service, they also strive to maintain a friendly yet professional service to all homeowners. Liz tells us: “I came across Cornish Horizons when booking my holiday in 2016, so they were one of three companies I approached to register my property with. They came miles ahead of the other two and have advised and guided me every step of the way since, from assessing and pricing, to marketing. They also have fantastic connections with loads of businesses throughout the south west, meaning they’re able to offer me loyalty discounts at a huge variety of outlets, which is a huge bonus!” So far, Liz explains that she’s enjoyed her property manager Sophie’s unwavering enthusiasm for her property. “She’s so pro-active and always puts a smile on my face. She clearly loves her job and that enthusiasm is definitely contagious he took some photos of the property and they look amazing, so I’m looking forward to working on my second property with her.” When asked what inspired her to start letting Dovedale, she tells us: “I’ve had a successful music career in London as a Tour Production Assistant and Agency PA, so I knew since moving to Bristol a conventional
desk job wouldn’t suit me. I’ve always felt a pull towards the West Country, so after a five day reak ack in 0 at ooseham Barton Riding Stables, Morwenstow, I decided I’d have a go at the holiday let business. I wanted to be close enough to catch the ‘long weekend’ trade from Bristol, so I began my research in north Cornwall.” While setting up a property for letting has posed its share of challenges – a twiceflooded shed, autumnal leaves messing up the yard ahead of guests arriving and the temptation to decorate in her own favoured style – Liz has found the team at Cornish Horizons to be invaluable in making her property work for her. If you, like Liz, want to immerse yourself in the letting business, or you’re already invested and are looking for a service that’s completely focussed on you, why not get in touch?

Already boasting stylish and comfortable accommodation on the south coast, Bodrugan Barton now offers glamping too!
O
BELOW Miles of stunning coastline, just waiting to be explored
wner Sally explains: “With increasing standards and so much alternative glamping accommodation provided throughout the British Isles, we felt we needed to bring up the site to the cottage standards and installed the Wigwams®, which are lovely warm camping cabins that sit beautifully in the countryside.” Bodrugan’s history dates back to Domesday, with Bodrugan’s Leap – an outstanding section of the coast path – commemorating Sir Henry de Bodrugan leaping off the cliff with his horse to escape Earl Edgcumbe, after he and his men discovered he’d betrayed the Loyalists during the Civil War. This historic site is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, situated between Gorran Haven and Mevagissey, with the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Caerhayes and the Roseland peninsula all within a few minutes’ drive. There are also some wonderful views for glampers and Sally tells us: “Everyone who stays on our site can’t wait to drink their early morning tea looking over the sea, watching the fishing oats come and go Sally and her husband Tim also rear sheep, supplying lamb to Waitrose, and they even have a few Dexter cattle. Their son Robin is beginning to take on more farming responsibilities. Tom
and Daisy, Robin’s siblings both live and work outside of Cornwall, but they love returning as often as they can and bringing their friends down to show the place off! “The best things about this business are talking to people and communicating to them about food é ABOVE provenance, farming and how the countryside BELOW works. There’s so much interest – our guests Camp in style in one love the idea of a farm and like to know more of the new about the way we operate. A big bonus of having Wigwams® people on your land is that you get to learn what happens beyond the Tamar, and it’s vital to keep up with changing viewpoints and to understand what people want from a holiday. At Bodrugan, they get great views, walking, beaches, comfortable, en-suite glamping cabins with firepits, outdoor furniture and a car free site small enough for children to be left to explore. If it rains, they can use our heated indoor pool and sauna, and when tired children go to sleep, parents can enjoy a drink on the deck as they watch the ocean.”

ate St Ives will be celebrating the acclaimed British artist Patrick Heron (1920 to 1999) this summer. his retrospective will e the first major show of his work for 20 years. One of the most significant and innovative figures in 20th Century British art, Heron played a major role in the development of post-war abstract art.
It runs from 19th May to 30th September 2018. This exhibition – spanning over 50 years of work from 1943 to 1996 – brings together 45 colour-saturated paintings, including rarely seen works from public and private collections around the world. It is a rare opportunity to experience the scope and ambitious scale of Heron’s painting.

You can explore the history of modern art in St Ives in the dedicated rooms, giving key artists a permanent presence in the town where they lived and worked. The display follows those artists across the 20th Century, revealing their relationships to international art histories. From the unique perspective of St Ives, visitors will be able to bridge geographical and chronological boundaries and discover new connections through familiar artists.

Heron’s abstraction is a direct response to the light, colour and shape that he encountered every day. An art of pure visual sensation, his paintings are the result of his experience of looking acutely at the world and though they do not represent the garden and landscape surrounding his home and studio in Cornwall, those forms resonate in his painting in fundamental ways. The exhibition in the new top-lit gallery at ate t ves is the first opportunity to bring together a group of these large-scale expansive works to Cornwall, and reveal the full evolution of his vibrant abstract language. It will unlock new insights into his art and encourage all visitors to enjoy the simple and joyous act of looking. Rather than a conventional retrospective, with a chronological display, this show is a succession of spaces and juxtapositions across the full breadth of his career to encourage a new understanding of his achievement as an artist and the creative processes he followed. Born in Leeds, Heron spent his early childhood in Cornwall. The family left after five years, ut eron returned, first in 44 to 1945 when he came to work for Bernard Leach at the Leach Pottery in St Ives. Whilst he was there, he met many leading of the modernist artists associated with St Ives, including Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. He then spent each summer there until 1956, when he moved permanently to Zennor, west Cornwall. He was foremost a painter, however during his career, he worked in a variety of media, from the silk scarves he designed from the age of 14, for his father’s company Cresta, to the beautiful stained-glass window at the entrance of Tate St Ives. To accompany this major exhibition, a fantastic range of events and activities will be running over the summer. For families, Tate Create returns during the school holidays. In the summer it will be the Big Paint Challenge and it’s all about colour. Get your paintbrushes ready and help us to transform our Foyle Studio into an exhibition of artworks, inspired

Agnes Arber was awarded first class results at both University College of London and The University of Cambridge for her BSc and Masters in Botanical Studies. She went on to become the first female botanist to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and the first woman to receive the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London. Agnes Arber lived botanics. From her work, we wanted to create a fitting tribute. A convergence of nine herbs and fruits, distilled together in the same pot. With savoury, earthy notes of juniper, coriander, and angelica - complemented by the warm, spicy undertones of cassia. A
t the Lemon Arms at Mylor Bridge, with its garden in full bloom and management by Jonny and Sam Pearce (with over 20 years’ experience of running Cornish pubs and restaurants), there’s no better time than now to enjoy the fruits of sunny Cornwall. Indeed, walking around Mylor creek and looking over the undulating blue water as it ripples beneath the boats, it’s not hard to work up an appetite, especially as the sun shines and the sea breeze works its way in and out of your lungs. What could e more fitting than a fresh seafood lunch, complemented with a your favourite tipple? Headed up by Daniel Blaszkowski, who previously worked with London seafood specialists Wright Brothers of Borough Market, and Tim Hammill, who learned his trade locally in places such as the Pandora Inn and Mylor Café, the kitchen team has a keen passion for Cornwall’s amazing local produce and, never knowing what the local day boats are going to bring in,
produces an ever changing specials menu for you to peruse, so no visit is ever quite the same. ABOVE ì RIGHT BELOW Experience life aboard a genuine tall ship as you explore the coast under the power of sail
ver wondered what it might be like to sail a classic tall ship? Feel the wind and spray in your hair as the sails flap and billow above your head? Cut through the surf and head off into the sunset with dolphins leaping alongside? Well, say ahoy there to the Johanna Lucretia, a beautifully preserved tall ship that’s running long weekend taster trips around the coast this summer. A founder vessel of the new VentureSail classic sailing holidays agency, the two-masted topsail schooner is the pride and joy of skipper Rodger Barton, who loves nothing more than introducing newbie seagoers and veterans alike to the joys of tall ship sailing. Lend a hand with raising a sail, take the helm for a nautical mile or two, or simply sit on deck with a mug of tea and watch the stunning coast pass y all in on traditional fishing villages, secluded coves and oldark s filming locations, mustering with crew and guests at the end of each day to swap notes and enjoy some homecooked food. Then, with a day’s worth of bracing sea air in your lungs, retire to one of the ten guest berths in the wood-panelled below-deck for a sound night’s rest. ead to the o cial we site for more on Johanna Lucretia’s West Country sailing weekends, as well as her crossings to the Isles of Scilly and details of holidays on other VentureSail boats. Established in 2018, VentureSail’s growing collection of traditional holiday and adventure vessels answers the call from travellers for truly different and authentic outdoor experiences. Choose a long weekend on the Cornish coast, a voyage to St Kilda, island-hopping in the Caribbean, a tour of Arctic waters or one of the other trips, and take the helm as the wind fills your sails! VentureSail makes it easy for nautical novices to taste life on the ocean waves, and get a crew’seye-view of spectacular seascapes and wildlife from the deck of a classic tall ship. Having had a go ourselves, we can confirm firsthand that it truly is an experience like no other! Keep an eye on the website for more details of vessels, voyages and dates.

l l a w n r Co INVESTING IN
We speak to George at Cornish Traditional cottages about buying a holiday property in Cornwall.
staying in a Cornish holiday home continues to grow. Whether you buy property to create a home from home in Cornwall, or to provide one for paying guests, it’s typically a sound investment. “Cornish homes are not especially e pensive hile house prices can fluctuate, if you’re looking for a long-term investment, this is less of a concern. Letting out your home when you aren’t using it can cover the cost of ownership and in many cases actually return a good profit “The Cornish economy thrives on tourism. Visitor attractions large, small and artisan exist and grow across the county. What’s more, access to all parts of the Duchy is being improved, all the time making it easier for tourists to reach the lesser known and often more sought-after spots. Access around Cornwall is improved every year and Cornwall Airport Newquay brings visitors from London, the north as well as Spain, Germany and Ireland.” In other words, where better to invest in a holiday home?

here are many reasons to buy a holiday home in Cornwall, with many choosing to do so as a lifestyle choice. George says: “If you love and keep coming back to the same favourite area, it may make sense to buy your own property. You’ll save on accommodation costs and over time, you’ll be acquiring an asset that could become a valuable nest egg, or even a retirement home!” This leads to another reason for buying a home in Cornwall, which is buying as an investment. Not only are you investing in a happy retirement spent in Cornwall – it can also generate income. But there are some things to consider, such as generating income beyond the basic capital appreciation made simply from owning a property. Two of the most common options include long-term rentals and holiday letting, each with its own pros and cons. Long lets, while earning comparatively less than holiday lets, experience less wear and tear, and you often don’t need to furnish the house or deal with utilities. On the other hand, holiday lets, in comparison, can command more rent per week than a comparative long let would in a month, however more guests usually means more maintenance. “Kernow’s climate, geography, coastline and attractions make it Britain’s number one holiday destination and the demand for

THE ROAD
y r e v o c e r o t We catch up with Gerri Creedon, the inspiring personality behind Regain Recovery.
G
DID YOU KNOW? In the last year, more than 40 people have been through the Regain Recovery programme and are maintaining their recovery still. This includes them retaining their relationships and careers.
erri tells us: “People often ask me where my passion for supporting people to make positive changes in their lives comes from, especially as I had a successful career working in the oil industry. My own struggle with alcohol over the years led me to realise that I had to make significant changes in my life y years struggling with alcohol were arguably the most painful of my adult life, however somewhere deep inside I knew there was hope, and experience shows me now that I was right.” Gerri explains how recovery took her on a journey of self-discovery, where she regained her self-esteem and loving relationships. “Following my own treatment I completed a post-graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and I am a ualified herapist ve worked in private drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation settings and other agencies that specialise in substance misuse, both in the community as well as the NHS. I also had a very busy private counselling practice.” ut, erri tells us, this still wasn t enough, and the desire to help more people experience the positive changes that she went through kept pushing her forward. hus egain ecovery was orn erri set up egain ecovery in si acres of tran uil land in the heart of north Devon. “My vision was to create a safe, warm and friendly environment
where individuals struggling with substance use could access treatment and recover, but it had to e somewhere d e happy to go myself. My own treatment was very effective for me, but it did not provide the support for my loved ones that they needed. Partners and loved ones have their own needs on the recovery journey, so I was determined to cover the needs of everyone involved.” Gerri is passionate and committed to providing an effective, excellent service to all clients and their families. “My aim is to empower people approaching recovery, enabling them to help themselves and learn as much as possible about substance use and the underlying issues associated with it. With knowledge comes power, and understanding the cause and effect of substance use can be a powerful tool.” Gerri continues: “I am excited to share my recovery journey with anyone struggling to regain control of their own issues. I know how important it is for people to see that success is possible, and this is a key feature of the egain ecovery programme
