re you dreaming of a holiday by the sea? Do you yearn for endless days by the coast? Well, you’re in the right place! Here at Cornwall Living, we are delighted to share with you all that our stunning county has to offer and invite you to discover our beloved Duchy over the coming pages. Cornwall’s vibrant maritime scene takes advantage of the world-class sailing waters of the south coast and Falmouth is gearing up to host Falmouth Sailing Week 2021. We have the low-down on the racing and shoreside events from page 10, so make sure that if you’re visiting in August you add one or more of these fantastic festival events to your diary! We’ve also been busy collating a stunning choice of places to stay from page 24 – from coastal boltholes and chic townhouses to cosy cottages and clifftop hotels, Cornwall is beckoning. We also pay a visit to the amazing archipelago that is the Isles of Scilly (page 36), where crystal-clear blue waters kiss white sand beaches; you could be forgiven for thinking you were in far-off climes rather than being less than 30 miles from Cornwall’s mainland. Also in this issue, award-winning estate agent, Rohrs and Rowe is showcasing some amazing properties on the market right now. So, if you are looking to purchase in the county we highly recommend you turn to page 16 to discover more! ...happy reading!

Stay, relax and recharge this autumn

and sea

The Bay’s rooms, lawns and terraces have spectacular views across the cliffs, sea and fishing village of Coverack. Enjoy drinks, light bites and meals made from the freshest local Cornish produce while watching the waves roll in, or sit side by side on the swing seat with a pre-dinner cocktail whilst watching the sun set. Chef Sam delights in bringing the daily catch to your plate. With all fresh fish and shellfish coming from Cornish waters, and meat and vegetables home-grown by local farmers, this is genuine Cornish cuisine at its very best.

Tea has to be The Bay’s favourite event of the day. After adventuring on cliffs and beaches nothing is more delicious than a homemade afternoon tea, including sandwiches, cake, Cornish tea, Cornish gin or champagne, all served by The Bay’s friendly staff. A simple solution for holiday home owners in Cornwall If you’re the owner of a holiday home in Cornwall or south Devon, but are yet to find a waste management service that caters to your specific needs, then look no further than CTC Waste. Running their own fully licensed waste management facility near Truro with a large section dedicated to holiday lets, at CTC, 100% of waste collected is recycled – something to shout about when marketing your property, and a way in which to appeal to conscientious holiday makers, too! You’re only ever charged for waste that’s collected – no annual fee or contract to sign – and collections are booked online.

In fact, the CTC booking system is very easy to use, with confirmations sent directly to your email. The best part, however, is that your guests don’t need to worry about separating their rubbish. Simply throw everything into the same black bag, and the CTC Waste team will separate it for you at their purpose-built facility. Simple. The hotel boasts 12 acres of beautiful gardens which can be viewed from the Vista Lounge, which also offers panoramic sea views. For the ultimate relaxation, unwind in the leisure club hot tub or pool, and enjoy a pampering Elemis spa treatment. And when you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll be pleased to know that food is available throughout the day, with dishes created in the woodfired ozney oven and influenced by the flavours of the Mediterranean. Fond memories of the Tall Ships from previous years

LEFT Weather permitting, the Red Arrows are due to perform!

You can expect to see top-level competitive racing in a fun atmosphere and there are many viewing points on the banks of the River Fal to see the Carrick Road fleet racing such as the coastal walks around the estuary. Another good vantage point which looks across bay and down on Carrick Roads is Pendennis headland, particularly the ramparts of Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle. Owned, by English Heritage the grounds and castle are open and entry is pre-bookable online (english-heritage.org) for a prime position. Rosemullion Head also affords a ringside seat for when the boats head towards the Helford River.

From the 6th to the 15th of August, the world-class sailing waters of Falmouth Bay and Harbour (the third largest deep-water harbour in the world, after Sydney and Rio de Janeiro) will play host to a week of fast and furious fleet racing for yachts and dayboats and a host of shoreside events to delight and entertain. The regatta is organised by the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association (PoFSA) which is a partnership of Falmouth’s six local sailing clubs; Helford River, Mylor, Restronguet, Royal Cornwall, St Mawes and Flushing will each play host to a day’s racing.

t was with much hope, and everything crossed, that we would be introducing this feature with the excitement that Falmouth would be hosting a leg of this year’s Tall Ships Race. However, we have just heard from the organisers that the 2021 race has sadly been cancelled due to the continuing uncertain situation throughout Europe and across the globe in relation to the COVID pandemic. It’s such a shame for all involved, that we won’t be welcoming these majestic vessels to our waters, but there is light on the horizon…Falmouth Sailing Week 2021 (falmouthweek.co.uk) is still going ahead!

The historic Ancasta Champagne Race (sponsored by ancasta.com) takes place on the Wednesday. This long coastal race has a 60 year history and this year will be returning to its roots, hosting only the larger boats of the Bay Fleet. Racing in 15 square miles of open water outside the harbour the fleet consists of Firebird catamarans, IRC and YTC (South West Yacht Time Correction) yachts, and IF Boats. The coarse takes in the whole bay and extends up the coast to Gull Rock and beyond, finishing normally to the west side of Pendennis headland – although this depends on entries and conditions on the day. New for this year on the same day, and specifically for the Carrick Fleet – where you can expect Flying Fifteens, Shrimper 19s, Sunbeams, Falmouth Working Boats, Ajax 23s and Falmouth Gaffers, to pit themselves against St Mawes One Designs, Rustler 24s, and more – is The Mainbrace Rum Race (sponsored by mainbracerum.com). There is much anticipation for this new race, whose sponsors are an award-winning, Helfordbased drinks company whose unique golden rum is fast becoming the talk of the town. To find out more turn to page 48 or try out one of their top tipples on the next page in celebration of this new partnership.

ituated in the most idyllic rural position, Harmony Cottage is an absolutely stunning residence inside and out. The property has been fully renovated and finished to an exceptional standard throughout, combining its quintessential period charm with sympathetic contemporary interiors to epitomise the Cornish cottage idyll. In the kitchen, for instance, an Esse range cooker takes centre stage, combining with flagstone floors, bespoke units and a large Belfast sink. The ‘cottage’ vibe continues as you enter the sitting room, where beamed ceilings and a woodburner make the generous space feel immediately cosy. Heading upstairs and you’ll find two lovely bedrooms with gorgeous wooden floors and exposed beams, as well as a show-stopping contemporary family shower room. approach A NOVEL

S

Bringing the family together through innovative and sustainable architecture and design.

pecialising in coastal properties in Cornwall, with a passion for architecture, interior design and property development, Watershedd offers all of these services in one comprehensive package. The team adopts a unique approach to design, one that’s at once collaborative and innovative, with the ultimate goal of creating simple yet beautiful homes that bring the family together. The company was born out of a love for the Cornish lifestyle. In fact, it is the county’s constantly changing, beautiful landscape, its rich culture, and the energy of the Atlantic coast, that directly informs Watershedd’s design process… which is good, as those are precisely the things that draw people to Cornwall! Established in 2018, Watershedd was founded by Marzouk Al-bader, Poppy Trevillion and Adam Casey who, between them, wanted to bring a fresh approach to architecture and design to Cornwall’s coastal homes. “Every project and client is very

different, with a unique set of challenges,” explains Adam, “so it is important to us to tailor our services to suit each client and family.” With this in mind, Watershedd works with a team of local consultants and contractors, their goal being to simplify the building process whilst at the same time focusing on a design-led, collaborative approach between you and the team. The aim is to use natural, sustainable, locally sourced materials and traditional craftsmanship in each project that Watershedd undertakes. This is an ethos which has set the company in good stead – so much so, that Adam and co have since expanded across the UK, always adhering to the belief that carefully crafted, sustainable designs positively influence, and complement, the local landscape. Acting as both client and architect on a number of projects, Watershedd develops unique luxury homes to be sold on the open market. Unlike other developers, their approach is to offer one-off, design-led homes which maintain the same high level of quality

and detail across the board. Indeed, from imported Scandinavian flooring, to full-height glass sliding doors, it’s clear in each and every Watershedd home that no expense has been spared in delivering the utmost in sustainable and contemporary design. As an example, Adam shows us one of the team’s recent projects in Mawgan Porth – a home called ‘Dynargh’. Embedded in the rolling hillside overlooking the sands of Mawgan Porth, Dynargh is a private seaside retreat that’s been sensitively designed to embrace the natural contours of the land, and to maximise the views of the rugged Cornish coast. Built around the culture of Cornish coastal living, Dynargh is a classic example of Watershedd’s approach to design – one that really does bring the whole family together. The property shies away from white render, instead adopting a darker material palette. Black timber cladding, for example, wraps the timber cabins on the first floor, whilst natural Cornish drystone walling clads the ground floor living space. This separates Dynargh from other houses in the area, and serves as proof that a darker palette blends more sympathetically with the contours and colours of the wild local landscape. Spread across three floors, with only one internal staircase between the ground and first, the lower ground floor is deliberately disconnected from the main house to provide amenity space. This includes a cinema room, surfboard storage, showers, and even a guest suite. Cornwall is well known for its varying weather, and the design was intended to ‘force’ the owners outside and down the external steps to reach the lower ground floor, increasing their interaction with the landscape – ‘by design’. There is also an independent guest annexe on the first floor, which can only be accessed externally, providing the perfect accommodation for extended family and friends with a real feeling of self-containment.

Contemporary interiors blend modern detailing with cosy soft fabrics, embracing the fact that Cornwall’s weather isn’t always sunny. The resulting living space invites you to relax whatever the weather, with floor-to-ceiling windows allowing you to sit back and enjoy the show, whether a storm is raging or the sun is shining. In short, Dynargh is a shining example of Watershedd’s approach to design. With o ces in ondon and Cornwall, this sterling practice offers a novel approach to architectural and interior design, perfect whether you’re undertaking a new build, or refurbishing an existing property. With a small, experienced and dedicated team, Watershedd is able to maintain a personal and individual approach to each and every project, and when it comes to achieving your vision of your dream home by the sea, what more could you ask for?

Spring brings with it long days and clifftops filled with the sweet smell of gorse as carpets of sea thrift and bluebells dance in the breeze. With direct access from the hotel’s garden gate, this is the perfect time of year to walk the South West Coast Path, discovering the iconic clifftops and coves of the Lizard. After a good day’s hiking, what could be better than sitting on the sheltered terrace to watch one of nature’s finest displays; a Cornish sunset. Come summer, the lure of the turquoise waters is too much for most. This is the opportunity to swim in the crystal clear waters of nearby hidden coves. Take a moment to be still and you may find yourself sharing your watery world with a friendly seal, while sea birds circle above. Who knows, you may even spot an elusive Cornish chough! The warm evening air at this time of year invites al fresco dining. Enjoy the freshest of seafood, caught from the coves and waters off nearby fishing villages – think food footsteps, not miles.

Autumn into winter heralds a coastal colour transition. The bright hues of summer are replaced with muted tones as Cornwall dons its winter coat. This is a season for relaxation and nurture. Housel Bay’s new yoga space offers guests the chance to soak up some serenity, with a dedicated Yoga Retreat available in October. T

he Falmouth Hotel – known fondly as the ‘Grande Dame of Falmouth’ – has long held a sterling reputation for blending its castle-like Victorian grandeur with contemporary luxuries that cater to the demands of even the most modern guests. This renowned stamp of luxury hotel accommodation has, for decades, provided visitors with the perfect base from which to explore Falmouth, and with the recent addition of luxury lodges on the hotel grounds – offering a choice of two or three bedrooms, with all the benefits and facilities that the hotel has to offer – not to mention the self-catering cottages and apartments, there are now more ways than ever to enjoy a break in this most sought-after of destinations. The hotel facilities include an indoor pool and fully e uipped gym, as well as fine and casual dining. There are also five acres of beautiful gardens to enjoy and explore. This is great for those who wish to escape the madding crowd and envelope themselves in the calming quietude of the hotel grounds, but being so close to Falmouth, it’s hard to resist the temptation to explore. Defined over centuries by its proximity to the coast, Falmouth has much to offer those looking for the perfect coastal getaway. Pendennis Castle, for instance, is viewable

Across the water, St Mawes Castle is the sister to Pendennis, and for those who want to build a more complete picture of the history and stories that these iconic twins share, it’s a simple matter of hopping aboard the St Mawes Ferry. Nestled at the end of the Roseland peninsula, from St Mawes there are plenty of seaside walks for those who like to lace up their boots. In fact, there are few better ways to spend a sunny afternoon than a gentle stroll by the sea, perhaps with a picnic to hand and a bottle of something chilled. If you decide to venture into Falmouth town centre, you’ll find that this bohemian hive of arts and culture, replete with independent boutiques, artisan shops, trendy bars and tempting eateries, is perfect for combining a spot of retail therapy with lunch by the water. You may choose to dine in at one of the town’s many hidden gems – some nestled right on the water’s edge – or you might instead opt to grab a pasty and go off in search of your own quiet spot. AN ISLAND

escape

Why leave the country when you can book a break in paradise just past Land’s End?

 ABOVE Explore the sands of Scilly

BELOW You could be forgiven for thinking you’re in the Mediterranean

I

magine an island holiday without going abroad: the magical Isles of Scilly are just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, close enough to visit for a short autumn break to make the most of the last hints of summer. Scilly is the most south-westerly point of England and whether you sail along Cornwall’s amazing coastline on Scillonian III ferry or fly Skybus you will be on the islands in time for lunch. Greeted on arrival with white sand beaches and clear blue seas, you could be forgiven for thinking you had flown long haul rather than a 15-minute hop from Land’s End, 30 minutes from Newquay or 60 minutes from Exeter. Even the ferry journey from Penzance takes less than three hours! Late summer and autumn is a special time on Scilly – quieter and wilder. The islands are ablaze with wonderful warm hues, the wildlife thriving with activity and it is still warm enough for days spent outdoors enjoying the spectacular scenery. At this time of the year you’ll find something for foodies, walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and anyone seeking a little peace. As the islands are near to the Gulf Stream, they are warmer than the mainland

which makes them a haven for migrating birds and early flowers. Once you set foot on the islands you begin to explore a world of few roads and even fewer cars. Life here moves at a more natural pace and is as relaxing as the rhythm of the tides. You might choose to ramble from the beach to a bar where you can enjoy slow-cooked, local food or you might just sit and watch one of the most awesome sunsets you will ever see. Discovering the delights of these sand-fringed islands will help to recharge your batteries and if you want to reconnect with nature, the grey seals, pu ns and red s uirrels will be pleased to guide your way. If it’s peace and quiet you’re looking for it’s never hard to find a tide-swept beach where yours are the only footprints in the sand. In the evenings, collapse in front of the fire in one of the local pubs and try some local delicacies, before heading outside with a blanket. The islands have virtually no light pollution and on a clear night the incredible dark skies allow you to see the Milky Way in all its splendour. Moving between the islands is simply a matter of catching one of the inter-island

ferries. The hub of the ferry service is St Mary’s – simply stroll down to the quayside, look for the chalkboards, and choose your adventure. On St Martin’s you will find great local food, the islands’ famous flower farm and its own winery. For a truly once-in-a lifetime memory, try snorkelling in one of the island’s sandy coves surrounded by playful Atlantic grey seals. St Agnes is the very tip of the British Isles; it is wild and untamed. At low tide you can walk across the sandbar to the neighbouring island of Gugh, which is only a half-mile long and home to just three hardy locals. Tresco, by contrast, seems stylish and cosmopolitan with its world famous Abbey Gardens and their collection of 20,000 subtropical plants. If walking the gardens gives you an appetite, Tresco can offer everything from pub-food to fine dining. Bryher has a rugged Atlantic side with dramatic coastline, and occasionally waves to match, while the sheltered, eastern shore is sandy and calm. You can explore this island of contrasts on foot and its surrounding waters by kayak.

There are five inhabited islands and countless deserted ones to explore; each has its own allure. Constantly changing, dependably wild and beautiful, the Isles of Scilly draw people back time after time. Perhaps this is the year for you to come and take your part in the island’s story. In the light of Covid-19, Isles of Scilly Travel are offering transferable booking with free amendments and cancellations on both Skybus and Scillionian III. Both Scillionian III and Skybus aircraft are operating in a Covid-secure manner with social distancing, mandatory mask wearing and other practices to ensure the safety of our passengers, our crews and the islanders. Whichever way you choose to travel to the islands, the journey will be a unique part of your holiday memories and there is far more than you can see in a day, or even a week, which is why so many people come back to the islands time after time. So, what are you waiting for? Book online now for your next Scilly escape.

ild Tipi provides beautiful Giant Hat Tipis for weddings and events across Cornwall and the south west. These graceful giants were seen blending into the landscape on picturesque cliffs, nestled into farms and on the grounds of stately homes. We catch up with Sam and Tim to find out how the pandemic has affected them and how things are changing now that regulations are easing. “When large events were cancelled, it was a huge blow to us here at Wild Tipi,” explains Sam. “Not only did it mean an uncertain financial future, but it was heartbreaking to see the emotional impact of these cancellations. Our couples were lost, and we often lacked clear guidance to help them through. “It has been indescribably wonderful to have restrictions lifted, and to see weddings and events starting to go ahead again,” continues Sam. “We have the busiest summer ever ahead of us now that weddings of more than 30 people are now allowed. Our feet haven’t touched the floor since the 21st of June! “Of course, there are strict guidelines that we need to comply with to keep everyone safe, but it has been a joy to see these days happen at last.”

When Covid-19 swept in and turned the world upside down, local business owners Sam and Tim Moore of Wild Tipi were left treading unknown waters.

So what’s next for Wild Tipi? Tim tells us: “We have made use of the time that lockdown has afforded us to work with some fantastic local businesses. We have also been working on a vision to have a permanent space for a Tipi set-up at our home. It is a farm, surrounded by undulating fields of green and not far from some magical pine woodlands.” “The aim,” Tim elaborates, “is to invite others into our spaces to hold nature-based workshops and corporate days focusing on re-connecting in nature. We are excited about the future. Wild Tipi always has and will continue to be about connections; to each other and the natural world. We believe that after such a wild year, we could all benefit from some time in nature!” If you would like to find out more about Wild Tipi or wish to enquire about hiring their new space in Ladock, be sure to get in touch, or visit the website to find out more.

A WORLD BENEATH

  ABOVE Photographs don't do these incredible caves justice!

C

arnglaze Caverns is a family run business with much for everybody to enjoy. The caverns can be found amongst 6.5 acres of ancient oak woodland in the steep-sided Loveny Valley, on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor. Initially, there was an open-cast quarry on the site, but some 300 years ago the miners started to go underground too, resulting in the formation of three hand-dug caverns of cathedral proportions. During a tour here you will go about 150 metres into the hillside and 0 below ground. From the first chamber, which is fully accessible, there is a flight of 0 steps down to the other two chambers. In the lower chambers you will find the underground lake with its crystalclear, blue-green water. The caverns are at a constant 10°C underground, so a jumper and sensible footwear are recommended! Carnglaze is also home to five recorded species of bat, some of whom sleep and hibernate in the unlit areas, and whilst it is a wonderful sight to behold them, visitors are asked to switch off any flash settings on cameras and phones, so they are not disturbed. Delving deeper into the history of this site, we learn that during the Second World War, the Royal Navy used the first chamber to store its supply of rum for its base at

DID YOU KNOW?

Devonport in Plymouth. Local folklore has it that you could smell the rum at the junction with the A38 – about a mile away! In December 2002, the chamber was converted into an auditorium with seating for 400. Fast forward to now, and the slate walls and roof form a stunning backdrop for events of all kinds. A truly unique performance venue, due to the shape and height of the cavern, the acoustics are simply astounding, and in fact the venue has been acclaimed by many of the local and international artists who have performed here. With a fully licensed bar open on concert nights, and a catering unit in the gardens serving snack food at most events, be sure to keep an eye out for 2021 concert dates. But be quick – tickets are sure to sell out fast!

Shining An eco-friendly diamond business combining ethics with aesthetic.

 MAIN

Ethical, lab-grown diamonds that don't cost the earth

I

t was in a laboratory at General Electric in the 1950s that the first man-made diamond was created. Born from a small diamond ‘seed’, these first diamonds were not grown for gemstones but as functional diamonds for industrial, computational, health care, and scientific applications. Consisting of carbon atoms, they display similar chemical and the same optical characteristics as a natural diamonds and are graded in the same way, but it has only been in relatively recent years that engineered diamonds have become viable for fine jewellery. It was an appreciation of fine jewellery that was the catalyst for Elaine Reffell’s relationship with lab-made diamonds. Elaine was given a pair of earrings as a birthday present, but these differed to her other jewellery in the fact that the diamonds in them weren’t mined, but created in a laboratory. Elaine explains: “It didn’t matter to me that they weren’t mined diamonds. I couldn’t tell the difference, they were every bit as beautiful and meaningful and I was fascinated with how they had been made.” Elaine’s aim was to source beautiful lab-made diamonds that came without the conflict and the associated price tag. Several

BRIGHT years of research and travel led Elaine to find a supplier who was producing diamonds in a laboratory that were every bit as beautiful and strong as their mined counterparts. She set up her earth-friendly diamond business, Ethica Diamonds, in 2011 and has been able to combine ethical good practise with excellent customer service. Even most lab-grown diamonds have an associated carbon footprint and emissions and the pricing of these stones is fixed against the mined diamond market, which she believes is unethical. With all this in mind, Elaine is proud to only work with laboratories who share her ethos. Ethica Diamonds is currently the only supplier in the south west of pure, lab grown diamonds from the Diamond Foundry; the world’s first certified, zero carbon footprint producer of diamonds where production is 100% hydropower, meaning zero emissions. Elaine tells us: “We work closely with our suppliers and are pleased to say that we're the only business of this kind in the UK. We are able to bring people an ethical diamond at a time when everyone is looking deeply into the origins of what we purchase. Nothing that has been dug

up from the ground can ever be free from environmental impact to the seabed, wildlife or climate. Our belief is that if something is given from the heart, symbolising a special time such as an engagement, the birth of a child, an anniversary or a wedding, its production should not be associated with any humanitarian environmental harm or suffering.” Ethica Diamonds has its home in Truro – a beautiful, welcoming showroom where customers can come, by appointment, to choose their piece of jewellery. There is the option to select from a catalogue of designs, or Elaine and her team are happy to take customers through the bespoke process. They will help couples to design their own ring, which is then lovingly made by their own very talented jeweller who lives nearby. In keeping with the ethos of the business, the metals used, be it gold or platinum, are predominantly recycled. Customers are able to select every element of their diamond, from the cut, to the shape and the size. If a bespoke ring has been chosen, then sketches will be done and silver or wax samples made up so that they can see the proportions and get a good idea of a sense of scale.

Elaine explains: “We often find that people have seen something they like at Tiffany, Beaverbrooks or Boodles and want to recreate it using an ethically made diamond. Many of our customers have a science background and, having researched the product, have discovered that there is an ethical alternative to purchasing a mined diamond, that also saves them money.” Each appointment takes around two hours, which shows the love and care that everyone at Ethica puts into their work. Elaine’s daughter Emily has now joined the family business, becoming a valuable part of team. “The reason why we do what we do is all about the customer experience and their journey – it is such a lovely time to be involved with a couple who have recently become engaged,” says Emily.

lickers Doghouse on Padstow’s North Quay offers a plethora of eco-friendly and sustainable products to get your canine companions summer-ready. From cooling coats and lifejackets, to slings strollers, shampoos, doggie ice-creams and even private fitting sessions, your pooch will never feel so pampered. What’s more, if you don’t live in Cornwall you can still access this fantastic canine range online and have it delivered direct to your door! Slings Using a sling is a great way to evenly distribute the weight of your dog, making it easier than ever to carry them. Whether you use it for public transport, to keep young pups by your side, or to help older dogs keep up on those long summer walks, a sling can be used all day, relieving tension in your neck, back, shoulders and arms. All slings are manufactured in the UK, supporting British businesses.

Waterproof slings These are inspired by Slickers’ original dog slings, but come with added features and a waterproof fabric to keep your dog warm and dry in the rainy weather. After listening to customer requests, the slings now have a handy pocket on the strap for your phone for easy access. They also include a rain cover for your little one to hide under if they're having 40 winks or just need to take shelter from the rain. An incorporated eyelet strap allows you to secure the cover down, or alternatively keep it loose depending on your pup's needs. Finally, for added security an adjustable clip restraint has been incorporated to keep your dog secure, as well as D-Rings on the inside and the outside of the sling in order to attach accessories such as treat bags. Strollers Slickers has spent a long time finding seriously good-quality strollers to join their offering. They chose Innopet for so many

They use local, freerange raw goats’ milk which is fantastically healthy for doggies, and live Cornish yogurt to promote good gut health. Other nutritional ingredients include banana, honey and organic peanut butter. Shampoos and colognes We love to keep it British and so do the team at Slickers! All their shampoos are manufactured here in the UK and are supermild, made using essential oils that nourish the skin and coats of our best friends, leaving them smelling fresh and beautiful for days. Not only that, they are also concentrated so they last much longer and the containers are all recyclable, making them much more eco-friendly.

Slickers Shields For the last four years Slickers has been repeatedly asked for chew-proof leads. However, they didn’t want to compromise the quality of the leads simply because puppies like to chew, so they decided to produce lead shields that are non-toxic – safe if your dog does try to chew, and allowing you to keep the uninhibited comfort and functionality of your chosen lead. rivate ttings Everyone at Slickers loves dogs and for this reason all staff are fully trained to provide a personal fitting service, free of charge, on all products. WELCOME TO The Cornish Seal Sanctuary team is incredibly excited to welcome three baby beavers to their site by the Helford river.

DID YOU KNOW? Wild beavers lived in Great Britain over 400 years ago before going extinct. They were mainly hunted for their fur and glandular oil, secreted from the base of their tail, thought to contain medicinal properties.

Gweek

T

aking place in the large woodland area of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, the Secret Creek project has welcomed three baby beavers – Twiggy, Barbara and Norbert. Conservationists and beaver re-wilding campaigners across Britain are currently trialling many projects, re-introducing oncenative beavers into managed environments to study their impact on nature. Beavers are known as a ‘keystone species’. This is because their natural behaviour has a big impact on our landscape and wildlife. By damming waterways, beavers pool water, slowing the flow in rivers and streams. This water floods an area, creating new wetland and attracting wildlife, providing a home and water source for many species. As wildlife conservation is at the heart of all the sanctuary’s efforts, the sanctuary decided to pair up with several conservation groups across the country to determine the best use of the large woodland area at the sanctuary. It was quickly decided that beavers would make an excellent addition to the sanctuary, providing them with the perfect habitat which will in return open doors for research to further study their impact on the environment. The sanctuary are planning various research projects to understand more about beaver behaviour in the wild and how they impact the environment they inhabit. It is

known that their presence is beneficial and may even help to combat climate change. Beavers are very secretive creatures, mostly active during the night, which makes it di cult for the public to engage with these mammals. The aim of the ‘Secret Creek’ area at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is to provide engaging educational content for visitors to learn about these enigmatic animals. Returning guests will see landscape changes happening over time, while there is always the possibility to catch a glimpse of the beavers hard at work. These three were given a second chance, and this is just the beginning of their story. Now, to help them provide expert care to the rescued beavers, carry out the vital ecological projects and introduce an exciting visitor centre, the sanctuary team need your help. Any donation big or small will go such a long way to help support this amazing new adventure, that will benefit so many for the future.

 ABOVE We can't wait to see the difference these three beavers make to the landscape!
