If you’re planning of making your own getaway, then we are on hand to give you a few ideas. Whether a stickler for luxurious opulence or keen to connect with nature, there’s the perfect break for you in the following pages. Tregenna Castle in St Ives (page 48), the Roseland peninsula (page 44) and Crantock Bay (page 56) are just some of the stunning locations awaiting your arrival. Perhaps, though, Cornwall has taken its hold on you, and you’re looking to make a more permanent transition. If so, in this issue we showcase a range of stunning properties currently on the market with Savills Cornwall to tempt you down. Coastal views (page 15), north coast film locations (page 21), proximity to worldclass sailing waters (page 16) – whatever the draw that pulls you here, there’s plenty to let your imagination run wild. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to things to see and do while you’re here. The Masked Ball, often cited as one of the UK’s top boutique festivals, is definitely one for the calendar (pages 58 and 62), perched high on the cliffs above Porthleven. Or you could learn to cook like Rick Stein, on one of several courses and masterclasses at his Padstow cookery school (page 54). Happy reading and we hope to see you soon!

xperience a magical place, made even more captivating when visited in candlelight. The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic is situated in Boscastle Harbour, a historic and picturesque village on the dramatic north coast of Cornwall. Established in 1951, it houses the world’s oldest and largest collection of items relating to witchcraft, magic and the occult. There are 25 permanent displays with something for everyone including mandrakes, wands, crystal balls, dark mirrors, tea leaf reading cups, tarot and palmistry. Take a peek inside Joan the wise woman’s cottage and find out about traditional methods of problemsolving including the use of herbs, moon-blessed water and rubbing stones in healing. Throughout the year, the museum is open late into the night and is lit up with candles to create a dark and evocative atmosphere. There is no need to book for these events, just turn up between 8pm and 11pm, pay the normal admission price and explore the museum at your own pace. Dates for candlelit evenings this year are 15th April, 3rd June, 22nd July, 5th August, 26th August and 28th October, which is part of the museum’s fourth annual All Hallows’ Eve dark happening!

Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of harbourside holidays at Hotel Tresanton

The Summerhouse Gallery, just a stone’s throw away from St Michael’s Mount in Marazion, showcases the best of Cornish art, displaying a captivating selection of paintings, bespoke jewellery, sculptures and glass, from the established to the up-and-coming.

Hotel Tresanton has enjoyed nearly 20 years of providing guests with a truly unique and unforgettable Cornish experience. Designed by Olga Polizzi, the chic, understated style blends seamlessly with its coastal location, creating a relaxing bolthole to escape busy London life.

This spring, the Summerhouse presents a stunning selection of new paintings by Imogen Bone and Iona Sanders. Imogen Bone is known for her identifiable bold strokes and painterly technique, while Iona Sanders blends a delicate approach to colour with an important focus on narrative. This April, The Summerhouse will host an evocative collection of Maggie O’Brien’s paintings entitled ‘Where have all the songbirds gone?’ This bittersweet celebration of nature will explore the vulnerability of birds, plants and other living species. For more information call 01736 711400 or

Located on the harbourside of St Mawes, Hotel Tresanton boasts 30 rooms each with stunning sea views and furnished with antiques and Cornish art. Indeed, you can experience some Cornish inspiration first hand by taking a trip around Falmouth Bay aboard Hotel Tresanton’s very own eight-metre classic yacht, Pinuccia. Or if you prefer to simply gaze out upon the glistening azure waters, then make the most of the Beach Garden, which opens this summer. Positioned above Tavern Beach, in a private garden designed by George Carter, this patch of coastal paradise is a perfect spot to soak up the Cornish sun and sea. Mandy Milano

Over the following pages, we take a look at some stunning Cornish homes…

W

hether you are looking to move far from the madding crowd, enjoy stunning sea views or move into the heart of a bustling harbour town, Cornwall has it all. Some of these you could own, but Tom Raffield’s steam bent house is here only to dream about – I can’t see Tom or Danie moving from their woodland paradise anytime soon. Not everyone hankers to live right by the sea; many love to be near but relish the peace and quiet of their own bit of countryside. We found Home Farm – even the name speaks sanctuary and family – on the market with Savills. It is a wonderful traditional farmhouse nestled into the landscape with stunning gardens for pootling in and paddocks for ponies, a few alpacas or a chicken or two. With barns and outbuildings, there is room for the whole family’s belongings: space for surfboards, boats, maybe a vintage tractor to restore (okay I am getting too Archers now!), but certainly plenty of space to indulge a passion for vintage cars or maybe install a pottery.

“Winnie the Pooh should have come from such a house”

More about the farmhouse shortly… before I even saw this wonderful home there was the address. Just imagine the invites to parties, birthdays, Sunday lunch and so on: “You are invited to… RSVP. Home Farm, Withielgoose, Cornwall.” Oh, what an address! Wind in the Willows or Winnie the Pooh should have come from such a place. And who would not relish the thought of returning home to Home Farm, Withielgoose? And the house lives up to its name. The farmhouse is a beautiful example of a traditional Cornish country home; lots of character blends with modern upgrades to create a comfortable welcoming interior. Facing south, the house looks out over its wonderfully stocked front garden and the delightful kitchen/breakfast room has two sets of French doors out to the secluded outdoor area. The kitchen has a new Aga, the sitting room a cosy wood burner; there are window seats for whiling away some time, a separate snug and a study, as well as outside office and games room above one of the barns. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, two with en suite, while the master has its own dressing room. Situated in the heart of the pretty rural parish of Withiel, the area has lots of footpaths and bridleways to explore

Thoughts about the property market.

including the Saints Way, an ancient pilgrimage route which runs through countryside from Padstow to Fowey. And when you need the beach and the coast, Rock and Padstow are nearby with some of the best sandy beaches in north Cornwall… and some of the best food! Home Farm, Withielgoose is a dream country home just waiting for the right family to move in!

SAVILLS 01872 243200 truro@savills.com

“Going in to 2017 the indicators for the prime property market in Cornwall look to be quite positive. Unlike the last two years, there is no forecast of a General Election, change in stamp duty or referendum to act as a distraction, improving confidence and increasing stability. The weak pound since the Brexit vote has heralded an influx of investors looking for property in prime London, which has had a swift knock-on effect for prime properties in other parts of the country, most noticeably over the last three months of 2016. Perhaps most importantly, the FTSE 100 continues to break records, and the correlation between the performance of the stock market and levels of interest in prime Cornish property is clear. All eyes will be on how the markets react to Article 50 being triggered but trying to predict exactly how would be misguided as the second half of 2016 showed us.” David Jenkin, Savills.

And here’s one that money can’t buy you right now… or anytime soon. But we just love Tom and Danielle Raffield’s fabulous steam-bent wood clad home set amongst six acres of ancient woodland in west Cornwall. The ambitious project caught the eye of presenter Kevin McCloud and his team at Grand Designs who filmed the

“I just thought, ‘Wow we did that’ and that’s a pretty amazing feeling” whole project. It was one of Grand Designs’ most acclaimed episodes of 2016 and I have never seen Kevin McCloud, who can at times be quite damning, more enthusiastic and complimentary about a house… he absolutely loved it! It’s not hard to understand why. The house nestles into its woodland setting all curves and pleasing lines. Tom and Danielle bought the run-down, listed gamekeeper’s cottage five years ago with the idea of building a family home. Showcasing their design skills the new timber clad extension is concealed behind, and linked to, the original stone cottage and outbuildings, which have also been restored. The interior is also wood clad and features lots of their fabulous steam-bent furniture and lighting. It’s peaceful, tranquil and Danie adds: “Sitting at the outdoor table and looking back at the finished house for the first time was like having an out-of-body experience. I just thought, ‘Wow we did that’ and that’s a pretty amazing feeling.”

T

hree properties marketed by Savills Cornwall offer unrivalled views of the Cornish coastline, each facing in a different direction and taking in expansive horizons as far as the eye can see to the west, beaches and the Atlantic to the north, and sailing boats in a southern, traditional Cornish village. Cove Cottage sits in an enviable position at Cape Cornwall, in west Cornwall, and has a guide price of £795,000. A slate terrace wraps around the property to the south and the east, providing a place to relax in the sunshine or to view spectacular sunsets over the Atlantic horizon. French windows open onto the terrace, with panoramic views beyond the garden and the neighbouring National Trust land. The garden descends via terraced lawns to a former fisherman’s shed. Where better to unwind and take in the view than in your own unique hideaway, in the grounds of a very special property on England’s only Cape. Blue Seas occupies a stunning clifftop position above Porthcothan Bay, with far-reaching views across the surrounding coastline and out into the Atlantic. Blue Seas and its neighbouring

houses have private steps down to the beach below, which means that the owner has the choice of whether to relax in the clifftop garden or to mosey down to watch the waves. Blue Seas, guide price £1,600,000, presents a chance to own a front line property on one of the most desirable coastlines in Cornwall, and to either refurbish or rebuild to create a wonderful coastal home. Waterside House, guide price £1,595,000, is a contemporary waterfront house in Polruan. Waterside House is on the market for the first time in 15 years and presents an opportunity to own a landmark home in one of Cornwall’s most sought after south coastal villages. A covered terrace allows uninterrupted views across the River Fowey towards Fowey itself while providing access to the foreshore, boathouse, mooring and boatlift. The front of the house features extensive glazing, allowing for impressive views across the river from the large openplan reception room, the garden room and from the master suite. Unusually for Polruan, Waterside House has a separate garage, parking space. and garden located in the village, with the garden providing further views across the river.

n a county with almost 700km of coastline, it is unsurprising that many people living in Cornwall will spend much of their free time on the water around our varied and spectacular shores. In all of their forms, boats have been a part of the Cornish lifestyle for as long as the county has been inhabited. These days however, there are fewer mining barges and pirate ships, and more fishing boats, motorboats and yachts. The south coast of the county is particularly associated with sailing; the creeks and inlets of the Helford and the rivers Fal, Fowey and Looe provide endless opportunities for exploration, with jaunts to further flung destinations often beginning at one of the harbours or marinas dotted along the coast. Occupying commanding positions overlooking the water, Chy-an-Mor, The Moorings and Porthgwidden are located in the sailing heartland of the Carrick Roads, between Falmouth and Truro. Chy-an-Mor (The Shore House), guide price £2,750,000, is a four bedroom house in a world-class setting with direct water frontage, a swimming pool, jaw dropping views across the Carrick Roads and is surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens and a paddock. The house has a private slipway and a mooring (by licence), ownership to mean low water and is in a sheltered position, ideal as a base for nautical adventures. Chy-an-Mor represents a rare opportunity to acquire a

unique, private home in the heart of south Cornwall. The Moorings is a beautiful Victorian terraced house occupying the waterfront location in the centre of St Mawes, with a guide price of £1,950,000. Boasting southerly views over the water, The property has been tastefully refurbished and is one of the only few properties in St Mawes to enjoy private access to the water, owning the foreshore in front of the house and a licenced mooring. The south-facing terraced garden descends to the foreshore and provides a suntrap that is perfect for entertaining or for simply sitting and watching life go by. 2 and 8 Porthgwidden at Feock, guide price £750,000, are two apartments within an elegant waterfront mansion. Set in south-facing, waterfront gardens, the eight apartments at Porthgwidden enjoy beautiful water views, a squash court and a private slipway. Moorings are available at the discretion of the harbour authority, making Porthgwidden a natural choice for anyone searching for a Cornish bolthole near Truro that also benefits from close proximity to the water. The apartments are interconnected and are available as a whole or separately.

Surrounded by outstanding scenery, these two properties are stunning examples of Cornish homes in two very different settings.

L

ower Hamatethy, guide price of £1,350,000, is a beautiful family home located near St Breward, known for being the highest village in Cornwall. Neighbouring Hamatethy Manor dates back to before the Norman Conquest. Lower Hamatethy was originally a working cottage, likely serving the manor house, and has evolved over time to form a characterful house. The house has an elegant colonnaded entrance with original features abounding, both internally and externally. Sympathetic and appropriate renovations have given Lower Hamatethy a contemporary but traditional feel, with original features such as flagstone flooring and granite lintels being retained alongside modern additions including a Jotul wood burner in the sitting room and a brushed steel roll top bath in the guest wing. An annex offers a studio living space, which is tastefully finished while retaining its traditional features. The land and gardens extend to 20 acres and include woodland fields, while the gardens near the house are laid in a maze of gravelled pathways that wind their way round a magical space filled with delightful shrubs and trees. A boulder-strewn stream crosses the property and adds a further sense of tranquillity to this already idyllic, moorland setting. Treworgan is a magnificent manor house

and grounds set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just outside Mawnan Smith, near Falmouth. Boasting countryside as well as coastal views, 9.2 acres of gardens extend down towards the sea, where a gate leads directly onto the coast path and beach below. The surrounding area, including the banks of the Helford River, is renowned for its beauty and is largely managed by the National Trust. Treworgan was built in the late 19th century and is constructed of locally quarried stone. Dressed granite quoins and a castellated tower create an imposing façade, which is complemented internally with a high standard of interior finish. All of the principal rooms have south-easterly views towards the sea and Rosemullion Head. The interior of the house is impeccable, with bespoke features throughout, including the particularly noteworthy bathrooms and kitchen. Treworgan is unique in its position, offering peace and quiet, awe-inspiring and unrivalled views, and is in close proximity to one of Cornwall’s most popular and lively towns. Treworgan has a guide price of £5,000,000.

The stunning Cornish landscape has been used time and again throughout film and television as the backdrop to adventure, drama and romance and with Mother Ivey House, you have a chance to own a piece of the small screen.

F

rom white sandy beaches to wild moorlands, wave-beaten cliffs and idyllic meadows, Cornwall has offered a wealth of backdrops for films, television programmes and music videos over the years. From the unmistakable shots of Ross Poldark atop his horse to James Bond battling baddies in the biomes of the Eden Project, and of course, comedy medical drama Doc Martin’s fictional Portwenn, the Cornish landscape has had no shortage of starring roles. Mother Ivey House in Trevose, near Padstow, guide price £2,500,000, featured as the location of a popular television series. Viewers of the 2008 series Four Seasons, based on the Rosamund Pilcher book of the same name, might recognise the house and surroundings from the programme, which starred Tom Conti, Michael York and Senta Berger. The house stands directly adjacent to the beach and commands a mesmerising view of the bay and nearby Trevose Head, a National Trust owned stretch of the coastline. Indeed, this particular surrounding coastline is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with breathtaking Cornish views in abundance at every turn. With a front line, waterfront location, Mother Ivey House represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to own one of only a few houses in the immediate area and will provide the chance to refurbish or redevelop the property to create a truly unique and bespoke home. The five existing bedrooms and ground floor rooms benefit from views of the stunning beach and coastline, so you can enjoy your own blockbuster backdrop whenever you want. Direct access can be taken to the beach from the garden and Mother Ivey House has ownership of the foreshore to mean high water.

R

oskrow Manor as it stands today is an impressive Edwardian manor house, which has been renovated to a high standard using reclaimed materials and is on the market with a guide price of £1,650,000. The property is made up of the main house, a cottage and an annexe, and has undergone several modifications since it was built in around 1910, not least the addition of a ‘great hall’, which was built as a venue for the local hunt. Roskrow boasts high-beamed ceilings, oak parquet flooring, the original turning staircase and galleried landing, as well as a library and wine cellars. Upstairs, magnificent views stretch out to the east, towards St Anthony’s Lighthouse, St Mawes Castle and the Carrick Roads. Roskrow is set in 3.2 acres of impressive gardens, featuring a mixture of trees and shrubbery including oak, magnolia, monkey-puzzle, lime and banana trees. To the rear of the house, the lower enclosed walled garden is mainly lawned and adjoins the hard tennis court, bordered by lavender plants. The bases of the original greenhouses remain to provide the makings of a productive walled kitchen garden. There is a seating area surrounded by palm trees and also an additional sun terrace next to the house, which is perfect for entertaining. Indeed, with so many spots

perfectly executed with guests in mind, choosing where to entertain will certainly take some thought! There has been a settlement at Roskrow, between Truro and Falmouth, since the Doomsday book and it was the seat of the Roskrow family, before passing to the Pendarves family during the reign of Elizabeth I. Long associated with colourful characters, the manor has played host to special guests of the two and four-legged variety over the years. Roskrow has links to the motoring world; legendary Formula 1 star James Hunt stayed at the house several times during the height of his career, spending long periods of time in the cottage. During this time, Wimbledon photographer Arthur Cole, who grew strawberries for Wimbledon on the property, owned the house. On a more exotic note, according to the current owner, rumour has it that during the 1950s, Roskrow became something of a menagerie; unfortunately, photographs of the animals at the house haven’t survived, but we rather like the idea of a giraffe in the great hall and a lion in the library!

Living the

e f i l h s i n or C

A quiet yet incredibly important debate is rumbling along through Cornwall and it shows no signs of stopping: which is better, north coast or south coast?

C

ornwall, sometimes viewed as a distant, mystical land of pirates, wild coastlines and cream teas by those from ‘up country’, juts boldly out into the Atlantic and forms England’s most westerly and southerly point. As such, it boasts two fantastic stretches of coastline: the striking north and the serene south. But which is better? The north coast is famous for wide, sandy beaches, world-class surf and celebrity chefs. The stretch of dramatic, weather-battered Atlantic coastline from Cape Cornwall to St Agnes Head famously features in the BBC’s Poldark and has become as recognisable to many as Captain Ross himself. Further north, restaurants from celebrated chefs including Paul Ainsworth, Jamie Oliver, Nathan Outlaw and of course Rick Stein, enjoy international repute and continuous popularity, while top hotels including Watergate Bay and St Enodoc provide world-class, boutique accommodation. The south coast has the tranquil inlets of the Helford and Fowey estuaries, a slightly milder climate that enables the tropical gardens of Trebah and Heligan to thrive, and is known more for sailing than for surfing. St Mawes has garnered a reputation as something of a foodie haven thanks to the Idle Rocks and the Tresanton, and further round the south coast an annual food festival transforms Porthleven

into a three-day foodie mecca. The beaches between Marazion and Penzance attract adventure-seekers as kite surfers can regularly be found defying gravity in the bay, with St Michael’s Mount providing an unforgettable backdrop. Cornishman Jonathan Cunliffe, Head of the Savills Truro Residential Team, comments: “There are undoubtedly coastal hotspots on both sides of the county. Savills has noted an increase in market activity along the coastline and we have been able to pinpoint areas that have become more sought after, both for relocation and for second home ownership. Polzeath, Mawgan Porth, and Constantine Bay on the north coast, and Falmouth, the Helford, St Mawes and west Penwith to the south have seen an increase in demand.” Whatever you are seeking, whether a sandy beach and gourmet food, or a day on the water and a pint on the quayside, Cornwall is an unmistakable and unbeatable destination, which continues to grow in popularity without losing its timeless charm.

We take a look at Sea Salt, a contemporary two-bed apartment that boasts beauty inside and out thanks to an amazing design by Iroka.

C

ontracted by their Hertfordshire based clients, the Iroka team have stunned us again with the creation of a modern, vibrant yet relaxing scheme for the full fit-out of this five-star coastal holiday rental in St Ives. The standout feature of this fabulous apartment has to be the balcony, which leads off from the open-plan living area. The modern balcony boasts stunning, stretching views across the bay, the perfect backdrop to some relaxed al fresco dining. Design Director, Giorgina Holland was asked to create a light and bright space and to feature strong coastal accent colours with the use of a neutral backdrop. Drawing inspiration from the panoramic coastal views and pulling colours from the sand, sea and stunning evening sunsets, she has managed to create a tranquil and contemporary interior. Modern yet practical furniture was selected with a strong design brief in mind to run throughout the property. Some examples of these beneficial design choices include upholstery featuring natural, washable/ removable covers, zip and link beds to maximise capacity and dining furniture in

materials such as polypropylene to ensure they stand the test of time. Simple linen curtains were chosen to frame the windows in the living area, to be sure that nothing distracts you from the sweeping view across the bay, whereas a decorative sheer fabric was selected in the master bedroom in order to create a boutique hotel feel. Clean and fresh roman blinds in a timeless nautical stripe yet a modern turquoise colour were chosen for the second bedroom for their classic style and ease of access. Indeed, every single piece of furniture and décor have been chosen with such precision and care that to look at the apartment as a whole you would assume it came as a set. This enviable apartment is now available for booking with Cornish Gems, so pop along to the website, pick your dates and enjoy some time in a space filled with a stylish sense of serenity you don’t often see.

S

et in the heart of Truro is Three Rivers Furniture – an independent, family owned furniture store displaying a vast range of home furnishing products. On top of supplying quality oak furniture from around the world, as well as other exotic woods such as mango and acacia, the store specialises in English-made pine furniture and mattresses. In fact, as a result of working closely with its suppliers, more than half the store’s furniture is made in Britain, mostly in the West Country, enabling it to offer multiple-paint finishes, semi-bespoke sizes and a wide range of items that are simply unbeatable in quality. What’s more, the team can deliver locally to the room of your choice, assemble your new purchase and recycle all packaging for you. Store manager Matthew has been involved in furniture retail for over 30 years and is responsible for sourcing the store’s vast range of products. He explains: “We believe in old-fashioned quality; dovetail drawers, solid drawer bottoms and full assembly. From modern dining tables to reclaimed pine chests, our furniture is built to last. “While every item in our showroom can be sold off the floor, we stock many pieces and always have quality mattresses available for quick delivery.” Matthew is a great advocate of face-to-face advice and, while the website offers a taste of what’s on offer, he encourages clients to visit the store in person to discuss their requirements, adding: “We have customer parking outside, so it couldn’t be easier.” So, if you’re looking for a new piece of furniture that’s well built, made in Britain and quality checked by a team that knows its trade, pay a visit to the Three Rivers Furniture showroom.

A matter

of time

Keep up to date with a Patek Philippe perpetual calendar watch, from Michael Spiers. words by:

Dan Warden

P

atek Phillippe, the undisputed expert in the art of watchmaking, is the creator of some of the world’s most complicated timepieces. It has more than 100 major patented innovations, as well as the largest collection of complex watches in regular production, including the perpetual calendar. This watch function, which displays the day, date and month of the year, can even take date variations such as leap years into account, making it outstandingly accurate. Company founder, Jean Adrien Philippe, has linked this feature to Patek Philippe since the patent of the mechanism in 1889. In 1925, the innovation established the company as the master of the complicated watch, a term referring to timepieces with extra functions – complications – on top of the simple reading of minutes and hours. Today, the perpetual calendar remains just as popular and while some watches use apertures to display the day and month, others make use of sub-dials. A great example of the latter is the 5140P-017, a design that’s key to the Patek Phillippe perpetual calendar family. The reason it’s so important is because it houses a unique, ultra thin selfwinding movement that’s been fitted into the timepiece in an engineering masterclass. In recent years, there’s been a boom in demand for not only ladies’ mechanical watches, but also for ladies’ watches with complications, a demand that Patek Philippe has met. The 7140R – the first ladies’ perpetual calendar with ultra-thin, selfwinding movement – is a fine example.

Riding the

wave

Bring a piece of Cornwall’s coast into your home with the enviable surfboard tables from Bordh.

S

urf style furniture is always something to behold, taking tremendous skill to turn the iconic shape of a surfboard into a practical table. Electrician turned table designer Neil Adams has managed to pull off this challenge with apparent ease, with his designs being compared to Eames and Conran, at a fraction of the price! The genius in Neil’s designs lies in the use of surfboard technology, as opposed to actual surfboards, to create beautiful bespoke coffee tables, desks and dining tables. His table tops, made of foam and then hand finished by Cornish surfboard shapers, come in any colour, although we must admit we love the deckchair blue stripe coffee table stocked through Cornish Interiors, as it provides the classic by-the-sea look we crave! Each set of hardwood legs, which contrast beautifully with the gloss or matt finish of the tops, is hand turned by Cornish Wood Turners, resulting in a truly Cornish product that would look as stunning in a Chelsea penthouse as it would look chic in a beach retreat. Neil, who runs his business from the beautiful village of Crantock on the north

Cornwall coast, has supplied to private clients as well as top restaurants including The Stable on Fistral beach, where his matt black welcome table, which features the restaurant chain’s logo, adorns the entrance. Neil has branded the company, which is just over a year old, Bordh. “We were looking for a great name for the business and noticed that the Cornish word for table, bordh, was available at Companies House. It was the obvious choice as it captures the Cornish nature of our business, plays on the surfboard concept as well as explicitly stating that we make tables.” Shortlisted for Creative Project of the Year 2016 at Cornwall’s Hub Business Awards, future plans for Bordh include collaboration with Cornish photographer Saltdragon Designs as well as London and Bristol stockists. Indeed, Bordh is definitely one to watch as Neil’s tables rocket to the top of 2017’s must-have wish lists!

As Katherine Richards Design enters its 11th year of business, we see what the team can do for your home in Cornwall.

W

orking for more than 30 years in various creative disciplines, including ten years as a theatre stage and costume designer in London, Katherine has gained a richly diverse mix of experiences, all of which have contributed to her unique approach as an interior designer. Katherine explains: “Working in interiors is no different to many creative industries – it is fundamental that we listen and understand what is required. All of our clients are individual and no two properties are the same. “The focus of our business is on the personalities of the clients, the way they feel about their surroundings and their lifestyle. Together, we will create a perfectly bespoke, tailored service.” So what can KRD do for you? The team understands that embarking on an interiors project can often be daunting. They will guide you through the process, giving you confidence and inspiration along the way. If you are refurbishing a second home, or indeed your main residence, KRD will supply all the necessary trades and expertise required to complete and monitor the build. Friendly, personable yet professional in their

approach, Katherine and her team have the knowledge and skills to deal with all aspects of your project, from consultation to completion, giving you peace of mind that both your asset and budget are being well looked after. The best part is how Katherine encourages her clients to use their colour choices confidently, by employing her own passion for colour and her intuitive knowledge of how and why we make our choices. The result is always a scheme that’s used both positively and innovatively within her clients’ homes. All this, combined with access to a vast range of products, means that Katherine and her team can deliver the perfect design to reflect your personality, lifestyle and taste. So, if you have a property that you’re considering updating, be it in Cornwall, elsewhere in the UK or overseas, Katherine Richards Design would welcome the opportunity to discuss your project.

With such a diverse coastline between Cornwall and Sussex, it’s impossible not to draw inspiration from the sea. he Roseland is a place where you can be sure of a great Cornish welcome and a fantastic holiday experience, with a great selection of restaurants and eateries, glorious uncrowded beaches and superb accommodation. It’s the perfect place to explore and while away the days, making this area of Cornwall an incredibly popular visitor destination. One of the oldest independent holiday property agencies is Portscatho Holidays, based in St Mawes, offering the largest selection of properties in St Mawes and with properties throughout the Roseland. For those seeking a more relaxing holiday or somewhere to unwind over a long lunch or evening meal, the Roseland is laden with award-winning restaurants, including The Driftwood (the only Michelin-starred restaurant on the south coast), the Kings Head in Ruan Lanihorne, The Nare at Carne Beach, The Rosevine at The Rosevine and Hotel Tresanton and the Idle Rocks in St Mawes. For that daytime treat there’s the Hidden Hut on Porthcurnick Beach, rated as one of the UK’s best beach cafés.

For something more unusual, why not try a yoga holiday or a yoga break with a professional coach such as Felicity (see www.yogawithfelicity.com for more details). If you want someone else to do the work you can see the Roseland from the King Harry Ferry, or feel the sea breeze on the St Mawes Ferry, which offers year-round connections to Falmouth. Another recommendation is to sit back and enjoy the lovely river scenery on one of the boat trips to Trelissick or Truro. There is also a small passenger ferry that links St Mawes to the St Anthony Headland during the summer months. So if you’re looking for an escape in a truly beautiful part of the world, with stunning scenery and food to match, then make the Roseland your next destination.

With its golden sands and turquoise sea, Carbis Bay is recognised as one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world. Indeed, it’s the perfect base for those wanting to relax and get away from it all, while having the convenience of being just minutes from the bustling town of St Ives. What’s more, via one of the most scenic rail routes in the UK, St Ives’ coastal railway connects to Penzance which, in turn, offers some great shopping opportunities and fantastic places to eat. One of Carbis Bay Holidays’ most stunning holiday lets, Island View really lives up to its name. In the living room, the large bay window offers panoramic views across Carbis Bay beach, St Ives Island and Godrevy lighthouse, while the décor combines blues, greens and amtico flooring to reflect its coastal surroundings. Pilots Cottage, Mousehole

Cornwall is, in many ways, the opposite of the big city. As the noise of road traffic, sirens and planes flying overhead gives way to seagulls chattering and surf crashing, the stresses of the daily grind quickly begin to melt away. Holiday experts, Beach Retreats, with their award winning marketing and impressive property portfolio, know what coming to Cornwall means for those living in the city. Their guests, many of whom become holiday let owners, return for the agency’s second-to-none service, year in, year out. Take Pilots Cottage, for example. Set in Mousehole, with its narrow streets and picture-perfect harbour, Pilots Cottage is a 175 year old, Grade II listed building, just 60 metres from the beach! All the characteristics of its surroundings have been blended with the property’s high spec interior, striking the perfect balance between modern comfort and opportunity to explore the farthest reaches of coastal Cornwall. Pilots Cottage is pet friendly, offering accommodation for five over two bedrooms, as well as parking – a rare commodity in this corner of Cornwall – and WiFi. Even in the cooler months, with cosy furnishings and its own log burner, this is perfect cottage for a hygge, weekend retreat. 01326 861005 www.beachretreats.co.uk

n an ideal world, we would take up 50 pages and show you all of the gardens in Cornwall, as in our eyes they are all amongst the finest in the world. Unfortunately, we only have room for five so make sure to take note of our small selection, wait for the sun to shine and head off to spend the day amidst beauty and splendour.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan St Austell

On Monday 16th February 1990, The Lost Gardens of Heligan were rediscovered amidst the brambles of time. Today, Heligan remains one of the most loved and romantic gardens in the UK, appreciated as much for its beauty and mystery as for the groundbreaking restoration project, which was the largest in Europe! www.heligan.com

This Grade II listed Georgian home is steeped in history, with stunning gardens just waiting to be explored. A Victorian rockery, lake and Iron Age hill fort make up just some of the historic landscape and, if you visit in the warmer months, you’ll see the woodland carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic.

Tanglewood is a garden shared equally by wildlife and people. The grass is long, the foliage dense, wild and filled with wonder – with the occasional humorous statue! You can stroll amidst beautiful untouched flora and fauna or shelter from the odd shower in the captivating Embryonic Eden, a polytunnel planted with stunning exotic plants!

Trelissick Estate

Boconnoc House and Gardens

Trelissick Estate has a varied collection of plants with far reaching maritime views to enjoy as you walk through the garden. The main plant collections are magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and hydrangeas. The main lawn is at the very heart of the garden with mixed exotic borders with a focal point being the iconic and huge cryptomeria japonica tree.

This true Cornish garden must be seen in spring when the azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons are bursting with glorious colour. Many are still in place from the original planting 400 years ago. Look out for a rare camellia hiding amongst the rest, a cutting from the famous 230-year-old tree at Pillnitz Castle. Boconnoc House and Gardens are available to hire for weddings and events.

Spend your special day amidst family, friends and an idyllic outdoor atmosphere with Cornish Tipi Weddings.

L

et’s be honest, everybody loves Cornwall. And while people still flock to our sunny shores for the ultimate seaside holiday, people are now flooding to this stunning county to experience a unique wedding destination! Getting married in the great outdoors, often with a festival vibe or boho country feel, is a growing dream with city dwellers who want to create something really different for their day of days. Cornish Tipi Weddings is the top location for the wild at heart with its incredibly pretty woodland, freshwater lake, streams and meadow areas for ceremonies, receptions and camping. It’s a quirky venue set up alongside the 20-year success of Cornish Tipi Holidays. Outdoor wedding venues are becoming increasingly popular and this one is no exception, with a famous soap star – Eastenders in case you’re interested – marrying there a couple of years ago and fashion designers coming on honeymoon to one of the very first outdoor wedding locations in the UK. Add a couple of dozen fully equipped tipis, and the option to bring your own tents or campervans, and you’ve got the perfect mix for an unforgettable

wedding weekend. Two decades of camping experience on this lovely 20-acre site means that the team behind both the wedding and holidays know all about the importance of special time spent with family and friends. Being so close to the coast – only five minutes from the beautiful Port Isaac – they also know all about the swift-changing Cornish weather and always advise wedding guests and campers to come well prepared with everything from sun cream to wellies! Another top tip is to bring your own tipple! The Cornish Tipis team don’t believe in corkage charges; bring all your own drinks and set up a rustic bar with flowers, homemade signs and fairy lights to give a homely feel a world away from the formal bar experience of hotels and caterers. Whether it’s an elopement special just for two – yes, that is one of the packages – or a grand affair for over 200 family and friends, you’ll find it difficult to do better than this venue for romance and Cornish style.

What’s

COOKING?

We take a look at what’s new at Rick Stein’s Cookery School for 2017.

E

veryone cooks better at Rick Stein’s Cookery School. Maybe it’s the quality of the fish and shellfish they use or the view out over the estuary across the water to Rock, but either way it’s a smart place to do some cooking. Here are some of the new cookery courses that the school has available in 2017:

Indian Seafood – one-day course When Rick visited India, he embarked on a spectacular journey through India’s subcontinent in search of recipe inspiration and the perfect curry. On this one-day cookery course, head chef lecturer Nick Evans will teach you how to balance the flavours of fish and Indian spices as well as create some of Rick’s favourite dishes including Amritsari fish, Chettinad crab curry and Mangalore lobster.

along the way. Having mastered how to cook dishes like Icelandic breaded lamb chops with spiced red cabbage, calamari souvlaki and smashed liquorice meringue with berries, you’ll not only leave having developed lots of new cookery skills but also a signed copy of Rick’s new Long Weekends book.

If you’ve watched Rick’s new Long Weekends TV series, you can now learn how to cook some of the dishes he discovered on the show on this two-day cookery course. Enjoy chef demonstrations delivered by the school’s expert chefs, hands-on-cooking, plenty of tasters and a glass of wine or two

Weekend

Spending a weekend at Crantock Bay Apartments on the outstanding north Cornish coast is the ultimate way to recharge your mind, body and soul.

T

he views upon arriving at the apartments were so captivating that we had to drive in silence, after all, what words could aptly describe the stunning scenery of Crantock Bay. The sun was bright and the sea unseasonably blue, both culminating in the perfect backdrop for our much-anticipated weekend away. Indeed, we were so taken by the scenery that we were a little late picking up our keys. Luckily, the team at Crantock Bay Apartments are so organised we found our keys securely kept in a holding safe as per the instructions in the email, making it a remarkably easy arrival. Upon entering apartment two, we were greeted with a thoughtful hamper containing all of the Cornish necessities of life such as tea, scones, clotted cream and fudge! There were also some artisanal dog biscuits by Seadogcornwall– a lovely gesture that made us wish we had brought a dog! The apartment itself was everything we had hoped for, boasting space and well presented décor whilst maintaining a cosy and homely feel; it was truly a place to relax and unwind. In the morning, after a night’s sleep so restful I seriously considered trying to slip the bed into my luggage, we set off for a lovely walk around the coast. After only ten minutes of light walking, we found ourselves at the beautiful Porth Joke beach before continuing around the coastline to

Holywell Bay. The walk did a fantastic job of highlighting the beauty of the north coast, the panoramic views at each turn never failed to deliver. After our walk, we popped into the C-Bay café for a spot of afternoon tea. The energy was fantastic with numerous dogs inside enjoying the chilled out atmosphere in between quenching their thirst with the dog bowls available outside. Feeling refreshed after our café pit stop we headed out to play a game or two of tennis on the courts overlooking Crantock Bay. While it was fun, it proved endlessly tricky keeping our eyes on the ball, with such an amazing view to take in! Afterwards, we headed to the C-Bay spa for a relaxing swim and soak in the hot tub, an experience made all the more fabulous by the fact that we were the only ones there. Even though we treated ourselves to a delicious afternoon tea we felt compelled to return and sample the dinner menu as the dishes listed would have been enough to tempt even those with the strongest of will! The gentle music playing in the background paired with the soft glow of the candles created the perfect relaxed atmosphere, which we soaked up whilst sipping our glasses of Pinot Grigio Blush that boasted light and fresh, strawberry flavours. The food itself was absolutely outstanding. I opted for the sautéed scallops with belly

pork while my other half went for the sautéed garlic mushrooms followed by pan fried chicken breast with chorizo potato. As full and satisfied as we were we just had to go for dessert after our mains as the menu boasted some delicious choices; we opted for the sticky toffee pudding with deliciously creamy vanilla ice cream and a cheesecake. Both meals were cooked and presented to perfection and the staff were welcoming and attentive, it was truly the ultimate end to our day… Or so we thought! Watching the sunset while sat comfortably on the apartment balcony took our breaths away. Needless to say, we will be returning to Crantock Bay, although we would like to try another of the fantastic properties, such as apartment 11, one of the enviable new apartments in the complex; it’s amazing how attached you can become to a place in just a weekend!

Having a Originally started as a party for friends, the Masked Ball near Porthleven has fast become one of the UK’s festival season favourites. words by:

t’s a pretty exciting time of the year, May. The days have drawn out by then and it’s starting to get warmer. It’s a great time of year for breaking out the canvas, stuffing the cool box with some cold ones and kickstarting the festival season. I’m from Helston, around three miles from Porthleven – the home of Cornwall Living – and generally, it’s a pretty sleepy area, bobbing along quietly to the steady rhythm of Cornish life. Actually, this tends to suit me pretty well; I’m not exactly what you’d call a ‘party animal’. Every now and then, though, despite my friends’ misgivings of my ‘old man’ outlook on life, I enjoy prizing open that cool box and relieving it of at least a portion of its burden. Masked Ball, on the Beacon Crag just above Porthleven, is one such time. Last year, we arrived at the Ball in high spirits, with a Land Rover and two camper vans, setting up camp in the car park and quickly breaking out the chairs. For me, this is one of the best parts of the weekend: inside the festival, there’s something for everyone to enjoy throughout the day, but mingling in the camping area is surely the best way to kick it all off – you meet so many new people and everyone’s upbeat and excited to be there. There’s always an eager sense of anticipation of nightfall, too – the ball really comes alive when the sun goes down, both inside and out!

è RIGHT What a way to spend a sunny afternoon overlooking Mount’s Bay!

Later that night, excited to hit the main tent, we amassed at the gates before making our way into the arena. It’s at that time – the moody hour between dusk and full-darkness – that the Masked Ball décor really comes into its own; walkways adorned with hanging lanterns and fairy lights just about lighting your way; the different stages around the arena flickering hypnotically in your peripherals; beats and rhythms of varied pace and depth charging through your body, registering on your internal Richter Scale as you pass each tent. A highlight for me, aside from the giant glittering skull watching over the adoring crowd of the main stage, was stepping outside and seeing the moon in its full glory, suspended over Mount’s Bay, as if part of the staging. I did take some pictures, but they all came out blurry; funny that… Currently in its 11th year, Masked ê BELOW Ball has become a firm Cornish Masked Ball always sees fancy dressers summer highlight, despite initially being at their finest conceived as a local party for friends. Now,

it’s very well established on the UK’s festival circuit – often cited in national publications’ top boutique festivals lists – with partygoers gathering from all over the country, attracting more than 5,000 guests and seriously impressive acts, such as Groove Armada, Basement Jaxx, Hot Chip and Bonobo! Keen to discover how it all came about, I caught up with Kelvin Batt, co-founder and Director of the festival to learn more. “The Masked Ball has grown a great reputation, not only for throwing the best parties but also for doing things locally,” says Kelvin. “All of the decorations are made in Cornwall and the funds raised by the event go to charity, helping pay for such things as the Porthleven Christmas Lights as well as a new canteen at the local primary school.” Having grown up and lived in Porthleven, this is something that’s close to Kelvin’s heart. Kelvin continues: “I moved down when I was young and it was a very different place, then. There wasn’t much going on and practically all of my generation moved away in search of work. Events such as the Masked Ball provide a great boost for the local economy.” As you might expect, Kelvin places a great deal of credit at the feet of his team. “We have the most talented team around us and it’s a real pleasure creating something like this which everyone enjoys so much – we’re a very lucky bunch!” So here we are, with a mere three months until this year’s summer ball and I’m already getting excited, which reminds me: I’d better get online and buy my ticket it – Masked Ball is always a sell out!

T

he Merchants Manor in Falmouth is the sort of place you can kick off your shoes, curl up on a comfy sofa with a book and look forward to some delicious food. There’s an understated elegance with gorgeous wooden floors, muted grey and white colours with wonderful splashes of colour and quirky artefacts – it’s like being welcomed into someone’s country home by the sea! Meeting owners Nick Rudlin and Sioned ParryRudlin, it’s easy to see where this wonderful atmosphere comes from. They are warm and welcoming, and rather proud of the wonderful hotel they have created. Nick is delighted when I explain my feelings about the place. “That’s exactly the vision we have; somewhere where you can totally relax in beautiful surroundings, with truly delicious food and drink!” Sioned smiles and chips in: “Nick has a real ambition for the food and beverage side; he is always in the kitchen working up dishes with Hylton, our Chef Patron, and the team.” They’ve done lots of work on the hotel and, apart from the designer, have used local Cornish tradespeople and businesses. “We still use the same carpenters and painters, even the guy who takes care of the gorgeous wooden floors is the same.” Nick explains. “And we work hard to find our food and drinks suppliers, from the house bubbly which is local, to the lobsters and foraged greenery used in the kitchen… we continue to search out new suppliers and work closely with existing ones.” Now they are finally getting a bit of time off, it’s family trips to the local beaches. Sioned goes running along the coast and Nick says with a grin: “The nicest thing we’ve done is to get a dog, our Springer, Henry.” Sioned smiles, “We just love making people happy in the hotel, customers and staff. We love this place and work hard… but as soon as we’re off it feels like we’re on holiday!” Merchants Manor is definitely on my list of favourite hotels and if I can wait that long I’ll be making use of their incredible ‘Gourmet Break’ offer. favourite among Cornwall’s party goers, and set to a stunning background overlooking Mount’s Bay, it’s not hard to see why the Masked Ball is consistently voted one of the UK’s best and most unique boutique festivals. Taking place this year between 26th and 28th May on the clifftop at Beacon Crag on the outskirts of Porthleven, the Masked Ball is a spectacular all-night party. Since its conception over a decade ago, it has grown into a multilevel party kingdom where themed venues range from outrageous to spectacular, with a mélange of fascinating entertainment. Along with an unrivalled line-up of underground international DJs, this year’s festival features a brand new area, ‘A Voyage Through the Underworld’, which promises to transport you back to iconic parties of years gone by. Expect to see ball gowns, tuxedos, great fancy dress and a full dance floor until 6am. ased in Falmouth, overlooking the harbour, north55 gallery displays a eclectic range of art, from coastalinspired works to pure, abstract oil canvasses that are, at the same time, vibrant and full of texture. The gallery was founded in 2012, when husband and wife Inga and Jack decided to collaborate with members of Inga’s family, having already been exhibiting individually for years. The family are hugely passionate about nature, spending their free time together by getting out and about and exploring the Cornish coast, gaining inspiration for a great deal of their work – inspiration which is clear to see as soon as you enter the gallery. A range of styles and scales can be found in the work on display. And, as a result of the family’s belief in the individual, unique passion for abstract art, each piece is original with no printed reproductions. Indeed, the incredible diversity and exclusivity that’s evident in the art on display is reflected in north55’s client list, which is equally as distinguished. Knowing how much difference a choice piece of art can make to a home or space,

Jack and Inga offer a range of services to help you get the most out of your interior, from home visits in both Cornwall and London to discuss your requirements, to commissions based on collaboration with you via email or over the phone. Jack explains: “Our art works brilliantly in a range of settings, from a statement work in a modern, minimalist room, to ‘refreshing’ the interior of a more traditional space. “A chosen artwork can be used to add a splash of interest to an interior, or draw colours together from surrounding fabrics and objects. We are happy to work with you to create and provide what is right for your home, personality and budget.” So why not visit the north55 website? Works can be viewed and purchased online and delivered by fine-art courier from just £40 and you could have your Cornish artwork delivered in days!

Stay

Unforgettable

g n i v i l seaside

For over six years, Perfect Stays has helped create the perfect home-fromhome for owners, and exceptional holiday destinations for guests.

E

dnovean House, a former tired-looking guesthouse with a grand view over Mount’s Bay in west Cornwall, went through a phenomenal transformation over a two-year restoration project. Dating back to around 1887, the impressive Victorian granite house was built on an old Cornish farmstead. In later years, it became a popular guesthouse frequented by hikers and holidaymakers and remained largely unchanged structurally. By 2012, when the current owners purchased the property, it was in need of some freshening up. After viewing over 30 houses along the north and south coasts of Devon and Cornwall, the owners finally came across Ednovean House: “We were immediately drawn in by the view and the location. The bare bones were attractive but we knew we had our work cut out to create a modern, family home.” Welcoming, open spaces that maximise the coastal views, which stretch to Newlyn and Mousehole, were a key part of the vision, but there would be a lot of architectural work to take place internally and externally to get there; a project that contractors, Trelowarren Estate, summarised as a “once in a century renovation”. Like many traditional Victorian properties, Ednovean House’s interiors were a maze

of small rooms and hallways. Its life as a guesthouse was apparent in the segregation of what would have been the owner’s living areas and the guests’ communal spaces and rooms. What is now the bright, spacious openplan kitchen and dining room overlooking the bay was previously the owner’s living room, and the small media room, which now serves as a second lounge, was a very small kitchen complete with an Aga where the TV is now mounted. “A project of this size required a knowledgeable team, and Perfect Stays were by our side from the first visit, providing invaluable advice and making practical suggestions that would make logical sense to us as a family as well as for renting guests.” It’s the little things including durable oak flooring that can manage high traffic and installing multi-locks to eliminate the need for several keys that make a home manageable and enjoyable for visitors and property owners alike for years to come. Perfect Stays put the owners in touch with local interior design company Iroka, which provides an extensive bespoke package of architectural and interior design. Led by Creative Director Luke Weller, the numerous small rooms gave way to vast open spaces where all 14 occupants could comfortably socialise, as well as peel off and find solitude.

27/02/2017 09:43

“A project of this size required a knowledgeable team, and Perfect Stays were by our side from the first visit”

One particularly important feature involved adding a contemporary extension to the back to create a level transition from the open-plan kitchen/diner to the decking area – opening the interior space up with large sliding bi-fold doors and achieving the highly sought-after concept of indoor/ outdoor living. The key challenge that the owners and Iroka faced was achieving a sense of space without diminishing the atmosphere and leaving rooms feeling empty. “In such an enormous house, with big open spaces and high vacant ceilings, there’s always a risk of furniture being swallowed up by the space”, explains Luke. “The brief was to keep it simple as well, so we really had our work cut out for us.” Key focal points achieve this sense of balance, such as the feature slate wall created from locally-sourced Cornish slate, or the enormous windowseat-day beds in the lounge that provide the perfect spot for absorbing the views over St Michael’s Mount while enjoying a good book. While greatly changed internally with mod-cons, such as a Sonos sound system and smart TVs, Ednovean House still retains aspects of its original character. The exposed vast granite blocks that comprise the thick exterior walls have stood the test of time against the elements, while the ornate

planted gardens weave with archways to begonias and lush pathways that lead to a fish pond and vegetable patch, before unexpectedly opening up to expansive lawns on which the little ones can play, all under the remarkable presence of St Michael’s Mount.

Every so often we come across a business that stops us in our tracks and makes us think: “Wow, can this be real?” Such a moment occurred when I met master cake designer, Christine Jensen, at her studio, to talk exquisite cake creations and the ethos behind them.

P

ç MAIN A stunning centrepiece, marbled to perfection

é ABOVE Each element of a Peboryon cake is carefully hand crafted è RIGHT At first glance, it’s easy to miss that this is a cake! An Edwardian paint box created for an 80th birthday celebration

eboryon (Cornish for baker) has taken cake as we know it to the next level. Who would have thought that a small cake design company in Penzance would have an international reputation, and be taking cake orders from The Dorchester, The Langham and private clients in London on a regular basis? The Peboryon team, which includes Christine’s husband Phil, is growing rapidly to keep up with demand and contains a wealth of baking skill and artistic expertise and the most exquisite attention to detail. From humble beginnings selling muffins for local fêtes, Christine and Phil took the leap of faith to leave their jobs and set up Peboryon. Phil’s background in design and architecture combined with Christine’s people skills, and their joint talent for baking, created the perfect recipe for success. This awardwinning business has garnered a national and international reputation in just three years, creating incredible cakes and cake sculptures. But how have they done it? Well, taste is very much at the forefront of their bakes as Christine explains: “It’s all about flavour, texture, and using quality ingredients. We use our own special recipe butter cream, which has a crème patisserie base, and forage for elderflowers and hedgerow berries from the Cornish landscape to make our jam fillings.” Each cake is hand crafted from carefully, locally sourced ingredients. Christine adds: “Even the chickens who provide us with the deep yellow-yolked eggs we use for our cakes have a sea view from their hen house. They spend their days eating quality feed and breathing in clear Cornish air, which I’m sure is what makes their eggs so superb. We have to warn our clients that our butter cream won’t be white because of the gorgeous bright colour of the yolks!” Each cake recipe is painstakingly developed with individual flavours, and bake quality is monitored constantly – at Peboryon nothing less than perfection is acceptable. The sweet secret of Peboryon is to bring something deliciously and distinctively different as a feature centrepiece to any occasion – and that something is a cake created specifically for the client.

è RIGHT Beneath the vibrant colours and beautiful designs are exquisitely flavoured cakes ê BELOW Sometimes less is more. Christine and her team’s attention to detail means that every creation is a work of art

“We will either get an enquiry from the client themselves, the planner, or the events company and they tell us their requirements. We then have a conversation with them about what they want, whether that be minimalist, abstract, extrovert or unusual. The important thing is that it is their story celebrated in cake and it’s entirely personal to them,” explains Christine. Christine’s people skills, honed from her time as a counsellor and therapist, enable her to build up a rapport with her clients. “What I want to do is find out the story. We created a wedding cake for a lovely couple who met at the BT Tower, had their first date near St Paul’s and became engaged on a helicopter flight above the capital. The London skyline was essentially ‘their’ story and so this was recreated in gold around the cake. We topped their lemon and elderflower cake with a delicate chocolate hummingbird – a symbol that was really important to them. It sat amongst sugar peonies, reflecting the flowers of the bride’s bouquet.” Every cake that is crafted by Peboryon is absolutely tailor made and freshly delivered from Cornwall to the client’s destination of choice. My favourite is an Edwardian paint box that Chirstine and her team painstakingly recreated for a lady’s 80th birthday celebration. The individual paint pallets were labelled not with colours, but with poignant dates from the lady’s life. “We asked the family what she valued the most and the reply was her grand children. So we created an edible paper scroll, which sat in a drawer made of chocolate, on to which we wrote in calligraphy script all of the names of her grandchildren in order of age. "It’s that attention to detail that makes me happy to know that our cakes bring joy – a sweet personal memory that will last so much longer than the party,” adds Christine. All Peboryon sponge cakes are freshly baked. Once completed and boxed, London bound cakes make their journey on a specially locked freight carriage

from Penzance to Paddington. They are then collected by highly-skilled couriers who transport the cakes in eco-friendly, electric vans. On larger bakes, some of which can be worth thousands of pounds, Christine, or one of the team, accompanies the masterpieces in order to set them up beautifully at the venue – which could be anywhere from a top London hotel to an Oxfordshire country house or even Ascot on race day! Their exceptional cakes are also supplied to and recommended by great houses and hotels across the south west. “Peboryon have even delivered to a private Cornish cliff top, tipi party,” says Christine, “sometimes what we do feels quite extraordinary. We’re invited to contribute to a sweet part of some of the happiest moments of our clients’ lives. It’s a real privilege.” By now my mouth is watering and so I’m delighted to find out that, under the patisserie arm of Perboryon, cakes are sent up on the Paddington bound train every other day apart from Sunday bound for Workshop Coffee shops in Marylebone, Holborn and Fitzrovia. You can savour the exquisite taste of a Peboryon bake any day of the week. And watch this space…not ones to rest on their laurels Peboryon will be appearing on our television screens later this spring. As we draw our conversation to a close it is clear that Christine is more than passionate about what she does: “Life is short and precious. Making a memory as a group, whether that be a corporate event, a wedding, a family celebration is something very special. I have a deep need to have people celebrated well, and by creating uniquely personal cakes we are able to add something deliciously unforgettable to the party, whether it is in a penthouse in the city, or a cottage in Cornwall.”

Restore your home

We catch up with Jason Smith, Director of the environmentally friendly Eco Clean Tech as the company leads the way in patio and drive cleaning.

T

here’s no feeling quite like returning after a long day to a well-presented home. But getting your property to that state can be tricky without the right tools. Surface specialist, Eco Clean Tech, understands the desire to be house proud while not wanting to spend hours getting your home into this pristine state. That’s why, after selling the product nationally, the team have decided to offer an exclusive cleaning service tailored to Cornwall. With the help of their European partners, they have introduced the TerrazzaMC Brush to the region. Designed in Belgium to clean any external and internal surface, this unique and patented system can restore stone, decking, block paving and countless other surfaces with only a small amount of water and no damaging high pressures or chemicals. Jason has a wealth of experience in helping homeowners to protect their investment by restoring their property back to its former glory. He recalls one client with a lovely house and swimming pool that was surrounded by beautiful sandstone, which had only been laid two years before. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the surroundings, the sandstone had become infected with black spot. Pressure washing started to damage the joints and care had

to be taken when using chemicals as their children often played in and around the pool. And even after several attempts to clean the sandstone with these methods, the problem remained. “When the client first spoke with me she was considering replacing the whole terrace at a considerable expense and inconvenience,” begins Jason. But this would only have been a short-lived solution to the problem due to the surrounding environment. He went on to explain that due to our climate becoming warmer and wetter, black spot, moss, algae, lichen and weeds all flourish outdoors. The solution was simple; use the TerrazzaMC Brush with a little water and sand. It removed the black spot and resulted in one very happy customer, whom now not only has the area around her pool cleaned but also all of the other areas around the property as well. Eco Clean Tech specialise in the removal of moss, algae, lichen, weeds and general dirt, restoring all of your surfaces and giving your outdoor living space the wow factor it was intended for.
