ith so many stunning locations and beautiful views across Cornwall, experiencing them from your very own camping or glamping site is the icing on the cake. I had great fun this issue putting together our opening feature on the perfect pitches in Cornwall (page 12). Writing about something I love to do, in a place that I adore, makes my job seem easy. We are lucky to have very low light pollution here, which makes enjoying a night cap on the deck of your shepherd’s hut, while stargazing, a truly special experience. If glamping’s not for you then Cornwall has many other wonderful places to stay, from boutique hotels and modern retreats to coastal cottages and luxury lodges, turn to page 34 for plenty of inspiration and get booking your next Cornish escape. For those of you who are looking for a more permanenent base in the county, we take a look inside some stunning properties on the market, courtesy of Savills Cornwall (from page 18) including an amazing, modern clifftop property with a 180-degree view of the ocean and coastline (page 20). We also meet the Savills’ team, that has been marketing Cornwall’s luxury property for more than a decade. Until next time... happy reading!

The Cornish coast is a haven of wildlife, with a host of wonderful creatures gracing our shores throughout the year, from dolphins to basking sharks. There’s nothing more exhilarating than witnessing these fascinating ocean visitors firsthand. An eagle-eyed watcher captured footage of a mighty humpback whale through a telescope at Nare Point Watch Station on the Lizard, and posted it on Facebook. See the full video yourself online.

The dedicated team have been handcrafting beds for over 25 years using traditional foundry casting techniques, and have honed their skills to perfection. Garry Smith tells us: “We take satisfaction in knowing we produce the best beds found anywhere in the world and we do that right here in Cornwall.” The showroom in Chiswick is open to explore and there are showrooms in Topsham, Devon and Cornwall too. New Andrew Giddens collections for 2018 One of Cornwall’s most recognised figurative landscape painters, Andrew Giddens presents a new collection inspired by the spectacular west Cornwall coast. Depicting the natural majesty of the sea and the area’s beautiful beaches, these large-scale, oil on canvas works draw on the stunning scenery in and around Mount’s Bay where the artist lives and works. Inspired by the daily walk to his Perranuthnoe studio, and along the coastal paths to the neighbouring beaches of Praa Sands, Prussia Cove, Kennegy and Marazion, this collection captures the natural beauty of this wonderful part of Cornwall. Available exclusively from his studio gallery, these works will be of note to collectors of contemporary Cornish landscape painting, and those who share Giddens’ love of Cornwall’s unique coastal landscape and its ever-changing atmospheres. Coffee and kitesurfing at With amazing views toward St Michael’s Mount, The Hoxton Special is an exciting venue for watersports and coffee lovers alike. First up is location. It pays to invest in a location that guests will want to visit; it needs to work well as a base for their exploration of Cornwall. Is an area popular or undiscovered? Just because a location isn’t teeming with tourists, it doesn’t make it an unviable investment opportunity. Again, considering proximity to local attractions can really help you decide whether it’s worth your while. George also stresses some property attributes that can really help make your investment a fruitful one. “Between basic amenities and well-considered provisions, you can create a holiday home perfect for the audience you’re trying to attract. For instance, these days, connectivity is king and while it was once a USP, it’s become an expectation that WiFi and broadband of a decent speed will be available, and free of charge, too!
The Hoxton Special
With stand-up paddle board rental, kitesurfing lessons, yoga classes, and the best coffee on the beach, it’s a great venue for those that want to kick back with a lovely coffee having sent the younger ones off to do some activities under the watchful eye of the team.

“Real USPs need to demonstrate a unique offering that guests won’t find anywhere else. Even a hot tub, these days, isn’t unique, but if it complements a series of other luxurious attributes, it’s definitely worth a mention. Other considerations include whether you’re dog-friendly, can offer family or baby friendly accommodation, a swimming pool, or a beach front positioning, for example.” For more information call 01208 893980 or visit www.corncott.com

A look at the glamorous side of camping in Cornwall. WORDS BY
I’
HANNAH TAPPING
ve been camping for as long as I can remember. Trips to a farm site in St Ives in our beloved Comma van, where my sister and I both fell in love with the farm dog Flossy, were our family holidays. We only travelled from The Lizard but in those days it felt like a world away. Then came Guide camp, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Outward Bound – I can still recall that distinct smell of slightly damp canvas that emitted from the basic orange ridge tents that were standard issue in the 80s. The s, and my first ob as a ournalist, saw me testing more modern, state-of-the-art of camping equipment. Gone was the canvas, replaced by lightweight nylon and an unforgettable solo trip to the campsite on St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, where my pitch was so close to the sea I could almost dip a toe in the water from my tent. The ‘naughties’ arrived and with it my beloved Type 2 VW camper van, Betsy. She was a splendid surf bus and a comfy bed on many a beach party night, she even had her own wine cupboard! Heady days spent waking up to the sound and sight of the Cornish surf will stay with me forever. A baby on the way meant I could no longer fit behind the steering wheel and so etsy very sadly had to go, but the camping ‘gene’
in me couldn’t rest. On a whim I bought an old four-berth caravan that served us well for many a splendid trip with our young family, including my beloved St Ives. As the children grew and we were able to be more adventurous again the call of the iconic VW camper couldn’t be ignored. Whether it’s a whole week away or ust an impromptu night, our new van has taken us all over Cornwall. We don’t go far, but then in Cornwall you don’t need to! But camping’s not for everyone – friends tell me they can’t bare the thought of being cold and damp and having an uncomfortable nights’ sleep. How far from the truth that can be! With the right equipment and a few top tips, your camping will be glamorous rather than hideous! If you have your own tent, caravan or van then you’re halfway there. Invest in an electric hook up (they do these for tents these days) and you’ll never be cold as you run a little electric heater. I binned the sleeping bags years ago and we now have a camping set of soft, cosy duvets and pillows. We also take lots of lovely cushions and blankets (www. atlanticblankets.com), great in the van for bedtime, but also lovely to snuggle in to as you watch the sun go down.

Camping is all about the great outdoors after all, so we always make sure we are dressed for the elements. My essential camping kit includes a down acket and wooly hat (www. finisterre and a pair of sheepskin boots (www.celticandco.com). Everything is better in life with a warm head and cosy toes and it means I can sit outside that little bit longer to watch the final rays of sun drop behind the ocean. Cornwall has some amazing campsites, often perched on the clifftops with magnificent views and if you choose the right ones, many have shower facilities to rival those of top hotels. Don’t be put off camping with children, it can be one of the best experiences if you’re well prepared. Again, lots of warm clothes will keep the little ones happy while they play with their friends. Bicycles are a must – in fact both of my little ones learned to ride without stabilisers while camping – and plenty of activities to keep them entertained. Badminton and boules are our camping games of choice. Along with a pack of cards and a stash of audio books it’s not long before the dreaded digital detox ust doesn’t seem to matter anymore. My children love the fact that when we camp close to the sea they can walk back to the site without the bother of shoes. Snuggled in their camp chairs, sipping hot chocolate with sandy toes after a long day on the beach is theirs idea of heaven! We don’t skimp on the cooking either when we’re camping. Whipping up a batch of pancake mixture doesn’t take long if you’re prepared and what better way to start the day than with a pile of pancakes and crispy bacon from the barbeque. Even better if you have a friend like we do who always arrives on camping weekends armed with a huge fresh cake and eggs from her chickens! Lunches do tend to be pasties (well we are in Cornwall after all) and at the end of the day the ‘men and boys’ are put on barbeque and campfire duty (if the site allows). Many Cornish campsites have great onsite shops selling local produce so there’s no battling with busy supermarkets – giving more time for us ladies to sip on a cold glass of Camel Valley that’s been chilling in the gas fridge. Slightly sexist, grant you but men love fire, and am holiday after all!

This growing trend, sees little portable buildings and tents popping up in the most stunning of places, as visitors to Cornwall are looking to experience all of the benefits of outdoor living, with none of the downsides. ornwall is an area of the country that, for many, needs little introduction. Boasting over 400 miles of coastline, Cornwall has endured for decades as the destination of choice for holidaymakers and second homeowners. However, the ‘land of the pirates’ has evolved to enjoy year-round popularity and an increase in purchasers relocating permanently; in fact, for Savills Cornwall, 51% of the team’s buyers in 2017 were relocating, compared with 40% in the previous year, highlighting what a special place Cornwall is, no matter who you are.

Savills Cornwall’s residential team are all locals, each having been away from the county before returning home again. For Head of Department, Ben Davies, it was “the pull of open spaces and the timelessness of the county” that brought him back, while Tim May notes that it was “the dramatic coastlines, beautiful walks and, of course, my Cornish wife” that spurred him to return home. Anna Sharp and Emma Trelawny both agree that the food, the sea and outdoor lifestyle played a big role in their return and for Anna, “it was the Cornish coastline and sailing that I really missed”. Emma values “the moments of silence in Cornwall’s ancient woodlands and on the coast path.” Far from being the sleepy county that so many people imagine, Cornwall is a busy, forward-thinking and, indeed, very welcoming part of the world. The north coast is famed for its wide, sandy beaches, world-class surf and
multitude of internationally celebrated chefs enjoying continued popularity all along the coastline. And the serene south coast is equally as impressive, with tranquil inlets and wooded creeks providing the base for an array of leisure pursuits, from outstanding sailing to adventure sports. Inland, between the two coasts, there’s yet more to be enjoyed, with fantastic moorland, rolling countryside and woodlands, as well as miles of walking, cycling and riding routes criss-crossing the county. Savills Cornwall is proud to have marketed some of the Duchy’s most desirable and interesting properties and developments, and after more than a decade in the region, its friendly team of experts are ideally placed to guide and advise you – whether you’re buying or selling – on your next property move.

Discover this beautiful location and foodie haven that is fast becoming one of Cornwall’s top property hotspots.
P
orthleven, mainland Great Britain’s most southerly port, sits on the south Cornish coast between the Lizard Peninsula and Mount’s Bay. The harbour town originally developed as a refuge from the fierce swells and prevailing westerly winds that batter the coastline and is still used by local fishermen today. As you wander along the harbour, the still waters within bely the powerful swell out to sea that batters the coastline every year. The summer sees much calmer conditions with swell gently rocking fishing boats but winter storms see huge waves cresting above the harbour walls and hitting against the clock tower – an image that has made Porthleven famous and hints at the area’s tendency for shipwrecks in the past. Porthleven is fast becoming a foodie hotspot and hosts its own annual food and music festival every April to celebrate great food, in an even better location. The harbour is dotted with excellent restaurants and pubs such as Kota, Rick Stein and the Ship Inn. Located at the end of the harbour, the Ship has a quirky outside seating area that mimics the decks of a ship wrapping up the cliff behind the pub and ending at the crow’s nest, which boasts a great view out over the harbour, providing a novel way to enjoy a pint in the sun. Just outside the mouth of the harbour is the Porthleven reef break, one of the finest in the and extremely popular with experienced surfers who visit from all over the world. Like almost a third of Cornwall, Porthleven sits in an Area of Outstanding atural Beauty. The South West Coast Path goes through the town, heading westwards towards Penzance and Land’s End, and eastwards past Loe Bar and towards the Lizard Peninsula. Located on the cliffs in front of Porthleven beach is 180 Degrees Blue (guide price: £1,250,000), a stunning property currently on the market with avills. amed after the
incredible 180-degree views of the ocean and surrounding coastline, this is an exceedingly modern property that spans over three floors and is a fantastic example of contemporary architecture. The house has six spacious bedrooms, including an en suite master bedroom and a guest suite with access onto the first floor balcony. The living space is modern and open plan with stainless steel features and large white tiles. Plus, both the kitchen and living room boast panoramic sea views and bi-fold doors leading out to the deck in front of the property. The large decking area provides the perfect space to relax with friends and family in the warm summer sun. Enjoy barbeques with the incredible views out to sea and relax in the hot tub on those chillier evenings with a glass of bubbly in hand. There’s even an outdoor shower so you can wash the salt and sand off your skin with the sun beating down on you. Located right next to the beach, you can head out for a morning swim and return to the house for a shower in the sun, or take a leisurely stroll along the South West Coast Path before heading into Porthleven for some local fare. This property really is a gem on the coast and provides the ultimate base from which to explore this beautiful area of Cornwall. With such spacious accommodation, it can easily be transformed into a family home or continue running as a successful holiday let. So, if you’re interested in waking up to a gentle sea breeze every morning from the comfort of your own luxurious bedroom, then get in touch with the team at Savills today.

WATERSIDE WONDERS We take a tour of two stunning waterfront properties currently on the market with Savills.
W
hile Cornwall is known for its gorgeous coastline, stretching for hundreds of miles and surrounding the county from almost all directions, there’s a gentle debate bubbling below the surface: north coast or south coast? Of course, the simple response is that each is beautiful in its own way – from the rugged cliffs, golden sands and surf of the north, to the sheltered coves, enchanting creeks and worldclass sailing waters of the south. Besides, wherever you might be in Cornwall, you’re never too far from either coast, enjoying the best of both worlds. Nevertheless, to shed a little more light on the life you could be enjoying on either coast, we’ve selected two beautiful properties currently on the market with Savills Cornwall.
Starting on the south coast, Otter Cottage is a charming, slate-hung waterfront home on picturesque Mylor Creek, near Falmouth (guide price: £1,750,000). It has a private quay and boat store, with stunning water views from all of the principal rooms. Built in 1988, the owners have taken great care in creating a bespoke family home in an extremely desirable location. Church Road winds its way along Mylor Creek towards Mylor Churchtown and Mylor Yacht Harbour, where the creek joins the deep waters of the Carrick Roads. Accommodation is set over three levels and has been carefully considered to make the most of the setting; the openplan kitchen and dining room opens at each end onto the terraces, while the sitting room occupies a prime position

on the first floor with dual aspect water views. There are four bedrooms including the master suite. The terraced gardens are well established and include a fruit cage, along with beds of honeysuckle, roses, hellebores, wisteria and clematis, and two magnolia trees. Perfect for sailing enthusiasts, lovers of wildlife and nature, or simply anyone who enjoys watching the seasons change and the water gently amble by, this home really does offer a wonderful lifestyle. Onto the north coast and 3 Overcliff, which sits in a fantastic front-line clifftop position in Port Isaac, enjoying panoramic views overlooking the rugged coast and out to the Atlantic horizon (guide price: £550,000).
Otter Cottage occupies a truly stunning spot on Mylor Creek, giving access to the world-class sailing waters of the Carrick Roads
It is a three-bedroom cottage with openplan living space; the sitting room has a floor to ceiling window to make the most of the view – and what a view that is! The garden is to the seaward side of the house and slopes down to the cliff path, while the patio provides a fantastic location to sit and relax. Importantly for Port Isaac, there is an off-street parking space in the courtyard to the front of the house, and a garage. Port Isaac itself is beloved of artists and foodies, with miles of scenery to explore on your doorstop, via the South West Coast Path. Neighbouring Polzeath is a surfers’ paradise, should you wish to take to the waves. Whether a permanent residence or a weekend bolthole, this home is perfectly located to enjoy the wonders of Port Isaac and beyond.

COAST OR COUNTRY? We look at two incredible manor houses, one on the coast and one in the country. BELOW Gonwin Manor really does enjoy the best of the coast INSET Inside, Gonwin Manor offers a classic, cosy countryside living space
L
iving in Cornwall means being able to enjoy the best of both worlds, incredible ocean views alongside rural country scenery. For some of us, the draw of the sea is as unavoidable as waking up in the morning and for others, being lost in the peace and serenity of the countryside fills us with a sense of calm and tranquillity. We look at two incredible properties currently on the market with Savills Cornwall: Gonwin Manor on the coast and Tremeale Manor in the country. Gonwin Manor is located at Carbis Bay (guide price: £3,000,000), and the sensational location is only rivalled by the property itself, an incredibly spacious five bedroom manor house with a gym, bespoke Philip Whear conservatory to the right of the property and a separate annexe. On a clear day, the uninterrupted views across St Ives bay can only be described as world class, and the scarcity of such a property makes this a truly special opportunity. Renovated by the current owners, Gonwin Manor and the separate annexe, Primrose Cottage, offer luxurious and versatile accommodation. The manor house boasts an impressive entrance hall with a vaulted ceiling and galleried landing that immediately creates a sense
of openness. The sitting room is both spacious and cosy with a large wood burner set within a granite alcove, beautiful wood flooring and French doors leading out to the garden. On the first floor the master bedroom has an en suite and balcony terrace, which enjoys the most sensational views out to sea and along the coastline. Primrose Cottage affords a holiday let opportunity or simply extra space for friends and family to stay, with its own driveway providing added privacy and separate parking for guests. The property is only a stone’s throw from the conveniences of St Ives and Hayle; the Tate Art gallery is just minutes away and St Ives is a foodie hotspot packed with numerous pubs, cafés and restaurants. Carbis Bay sits on the right side of the estuary and Gwithian on the other with its glorious stretch of long sandy beach and excellent surf providing fun for all the family.

Tremeale Manor, near Launceston, offers stunning countryside views in a stylishly renovated Georgian home (guide price: £895,000). The extensive refurbishment gives a contemporary twist to this elegant and spacious family home. It has two luxurious bedroom suites, the master bedroom boasting a private balcony, and four further bedrooms. On the ground floor, the modern and eye catching kitchen and dining room lead onto the garden and enjoy spectacular countryside views. This really is the perfect entertaining space, with a fitted wine fridge and bi fold doors opening out to the patio terrace, the perfect spot to relax and soak in the incredible scenery among friends and family. The well proportioned and bright reception rooms both offer stunning countryside views, the living room has a wood burner that sits within a sandstone fireplace and sliding double doors lead into the adjacent reception room; currently
used as an o ce. ith four acres of sprawling lawn to explore, there’s space for the whole family to enjoy with the surrounding cloak of trees maintaining an exceptional level of peace and tranquillity and the potential to incorporate a tennis court. Located minutes from Bodmin moor, Tremeale provides a great base to explore the mysterious and beautiful moorland. Cardinham Woods is also nearby offering enchanting woodland walks and a popular café. Plus, just two miles away from Tremeale is Launceston, Cornwall’s ancient capital with its defining and historic hilltop castle and wealth of amenities. So now it’s time to decide, do you prefer the vast ocean views at Gonwin Manor or the rural country setting of Tremeale? Both stand out as exceptional properties, spacious, beautifully refurbished and residing in incredible locations. You just need to decide, coast or country?

Sarah is able to fully manage everything,
from planning colour schemes, overseeing deliveries and fittings or simply guiding you through the process. ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE ARCHITECTURE We meet Ian Armstrong of ARC02 Architecture, an inspiring Cornish company at the cutting edge of both design and sustainability. é ABOVE
Mellalue, designed by ARCO2 Architecture
W
ith a by-line: “beautiful buildings that don’t cost the earth,” the ARCO2 Architecture team emphasise that their projects are both cost effective and environmentally aware. Director Ian Armstrong tells us: “ARCO2 don’t just build you a dwelling or o ce, we create homes with benefits to enhance your lifestyle literally building homes for future generations.” This building approach is evident in the creation of ‘Mellalue’, an outstanding coastal property designed and built by ARCO2’s inhouse construction company. When creating and building this remarkable property, the ARCO2 team worked closely with their client to achieve their vision to the highest possible standard, whilst also taking into consideration the impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours. Ian continues: “as a RIBA Chartered Architects Practice we have a unique, innovative and human approach to design which is evident in this stunning house.” The new dwelling replaces a mid-20th Century bungalow, which was of little architectural merit and didn’t make the most of the beautiful site. ARCO2 stepped in and with a brief from the client to construct a low
energy, contemporary home that could accommodate a family with teenagers and elderly parents; the team made moves to construct this impressive property. Ian emphasises that: “one of the key design considerations was to retain the sea views for the neighbouring building behind and improve their outlook.” With this in mind, the house was designed with a curved roof to maximise space, minimise impact and enhance the neighbour’s perspective. Ian continues: “It’s one of the most sustainable dwellings in terms of building fabric and energy usage in the area, and demonstrates that a strong but simple design concept can be really striking.” So, if you want to create a beautiful home with minimal impact on the environment, then get in touch for your free consultation and make moves to secure yourself a home and help secure the planet for future generations.

A breakdown of George’s top tips when buying a holiday home in Cornwall.
I
n an ongoing series of holiday home tips, George at Cornish Traditional Cottages has discussed all the elements to consider when planning on buying a holiday home in Cornwall. Here’s a breakdown of the tips we’ve heard so far. First of all, he emphasises the importance of research. He tells us: “Monitor the property market for a few months and talk to a holiday letting agency to understand which properties appeal most in which locations.” Highlighting that it’s worth digging beneath the surface of your favourite Cornish towns to understand the property market and tourist economy. Whether you choose a mobile home, a lodge in a holiday park, a bungalow, a semi-detached or detached house, it’s very much up to your budget and, also, how you can make it appeal to tourists. Quirky, unusual and interesting holiday homes, even cabins and caravans, if executed right, can attract a great deal of interest. On the other hand, there will always be holidaymakers who want that ‘home away from home’ experience, whether this is a characterful cottage, smart townhouse or sprawling farmhouse. Of course, when it comes to choosing a holiday home, location is the defining feature. Factors to consider are is an area popular or undiscovered? Coastal or rural? You’ll be tempted by honeypot locations like St Ives, Bude and Newquay, but because another location isn’t teeming with tourists, it doesn’t make it an unviable investment opportunity.
GUIDE Finally, it’s worth noticing the kind of property attributes that can really help make your investment a fruitful one. George tells us: “These days WiFi and broadband of a decent speed are expected in holiday homes, and free of charge too!” Other considerations include whether you can offer family and dog friendly accommodation, a swimming pool, or beachfront positioning. George’s step-by-step guide gives an indication of the kind of things you should consider when thinking about buying a holiday home in Cornwall. The team at Cornish Traditional Cottages can provide expert advice and, in George’s words, “are here to point you in the right direction,” showing that the company is happy to help you weave through the web of properties and find the ideal holiday home for you and your guests!

Already boasting stylish and comfortable accommodation on the south coast, Bodrugan Barton now offers glamping too!
O
BELOW Miles of stunning coastline, just waiting to be explored
wner Sally explains: “With increasing standards and so much alternative glamping accommodation provided throughout the British Isles, we felt we needed to bring up the site to the cottage standards and installed the Wigwams®, which are lovely warm camping cabins that sit beautifully in the countryside.” Bodrugan’s history dates back to Domesday, with Bodrugan’s Leap – an outstanding section of the coast path – commemorating Sir Henry de Bodrugan leaping off the cliff with his horse to escape Earl Edgcumbe, after he and his men discovered he’d betrayed the Loyalists during the Civil War. This historic site is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, situated between Gorran Haven and Mevagissey, with the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Caerhayes and the Roseland peninsula all within a few minutes’ drive. There are also some wonderful views for glampers and Sally tells us: “Everyone who stays on our site can’t wait to drink their early morning tea looking over the sea, watching the fishing boats come and go. Sally and her husband Tim also rear sheep, supplying lamb to Waitrose, and they even have a few Dexter cattle. Their son Robin is beginning to take on more farming responsibilities. Tom
and Daisy, Robin’s siblings both live and work outside of Cornwall, but they love returning as often as they can and bringing their friends down to show the place off! “The best things about this business are talking to people and communicating to them é ABOVE about food provenance, farming and how the BELOW countryside works. There’s so much interest Camp in style in one – our guests love the idea of a farm and like to of the new know more about the way we operate. A big Wigwams® bonus of having people on your land is that you get to learn what happens beyond the Tamar, and it’s vital to keep up with changing viewpoints and to understand what people want from a holiday. “At Bodrugan, they get great views, walking, beaches, comfortable, en-suite glamping cabins with firepits, outdoor furniture and a car free site small enough for children to be left to explore. If it rains, they can use our heated indoor pool and sauna, and when tired children go to sleep, parents can enjoy a drink on the deck as they watch the ocean.”

SUMMER DINING Enjoy a sunny bite by the sea at The Lemon Arms, Mylor.
A
t the Lemon Arms at Mylor Bridge, with its garden in full bloom and management by Jonny and Sam Pearce (with over 20 years’ experience of running Cornish pubs and restaurants), there’s no better time than now to enjoy the fruits of sunny Cornwall. Indeed, walking around Mylor creek and looking over the undulating blue water as it ripples beneath the boats, it’s not hard to work up an appetite, especially as the sun shines and the sea breeze works its way in and out of your lungs. What could be more fitting than a fresh seafood lunch, complemented with a your favourite tipple? Headed up by Daniel Blaszkowski, who previously worked with London seafood specialists Wright Brothers of Borough Market, and Tim Hammill, who learned his trade locally in places such as the Pandora Inn and Mylor Café, the kitchen team has a keen passion for Cornwall’s amazing local produce and, never knowing what the local day boats are going to bring in,
produces an ever changing specials menu for you to peruse, so no visit is ever quite the same. All the food on the menu is made fresh on site, using local, seasonal produce wherever possible, while an award-winning range of Cornish beers and spirits from St Austell Brewery means there’s something to match your palette and choice of dish, whatever the catch of the day! Pop in for an afternoon bite or make a day of it after a stroll around the creek; whatever your plans, if you find yourself near ylor, be sure to pop into the Lemon Arms. And if you don’t, it’s certainly worth a trip, particularly on a Sunday if you’re hankering for the perfect Sunday roast.

Penrose Kitchen’s new garden offers an enchanting space for outside dining. é ABOVE
A beautiful spot for alfresco dining
L
ocated on the outskirts of Truro, Penrose Kitchen is nestled within the tranquil grounds of Penrose Water Gardens, a beautiful and lush sanctuary of water plants. Leading up to summer, Penrose Kitchen has been working away on its own garden, ready to launch the new lawn area for an even better outside dining experience. Tables, chairs and benches provide more dining space and allow everyone to make the most of the glorious Cornish weather. Already, owners Ben and Sam have recognised the lawn’s potential for outdoor cooking, so watch out for barbeque events this summer! Sam tells us: “Our aim is to have an outdoor bar for the summer season and a gazebo to give shelter from the sun,” bringing the dining experience well and truly outdoors and creating a relaxed environment to enjoy the finest fare that Cornwall has to offer. The restaurant itself is set within a beautiful wooden building that looks like the kind of cabin you’d find next to a lake in France. The decking area outside extends out over the water giving you a bird’s eye view of the assortment of water flowers. For lunch, sit on the decking with a
refreshing glass of white wine and dig into the two or three course set menu, offering locally sourced and seasonal options such as Cornish scallops drizzled with lemon oil, Terras Farm confit duck leg and pears poached in red wine. The water gardens are also a haven for wildlife, so make sure to cast your eye over the ponds and discover the pastel shades of lilies with dragonflies darting between them and ducks idly swimming by as you enjoy your food. Then in the evening, soak up the cosy atmosphere of the restaurant and treat yourself to the rich flavours of the dinner menu. Having recently won another gold award from ‘Taste of the West’, Penrose Kitchen has been upgraded from the ‘Casual Dining’ category to the ‘Restaurant’ category, showing that the food really is as good as the setting. So, get down to Penrose Kitchen this summer and enjoy the natural surroundings and delicious food on offer.

THE ART IS IN THE TECHNIQUE We take a look at the work of fantastic local artist Mel Chambers and discover the incredible art of inlay tiles.
C
ornwall is well known to be an artists’ haven thanks to its incredible natural light and breathtaking landscapes. Indeed, our regular gallery pages demonstrate the amazing and varied art available across our fantastic county. It was in this section that a local artist caught our eye; amidst painters and sculptors to come across someone specialising in a lost art was intriguing. Mel Chambers is a self-taught artist who uses the ancient 13th-century technique of inlay tiles to create amazing and inspirational tiles. She blends beautiful images, inspiring quotes and poetry to create completely unique and bespoke pieces that are impossible to replicate. Inlay tiles are technically known as encaustic tiles, which means ‘to burn in’ as the colour is fired clay and embedded into the tile. In fact, due to the hard wearing and everlasting way the tiles are made, no self-respecting monastery would have been seen without an inlay tile floor, as no matter how many pilgrims walked over them they would never fade away. Indeed, ancient tiles are still being discovered today, fully intact and just as beautiful as the day they were made.
The art of Alchemy Tiles is that each tile is individually hand carved into wet clay. Coloured slip (runny clay with oxides and stains added to it) is then inlaid on the top to sink into the carved areas. Once the slip dries, the tile is scraped back to reveal the image and script underneath. The tile is left to dry and then gla ed and fired raw, only once and very slowly over three days. Once the tile is removed from the kiln a stain is wiped over to highlight the crazing within the crackle glaze. The whole process for each tile takes a minimum of two weeks, which is an amazing dedication to the process! These beautiful tiles can be used and enjoyed anywhere as they can be made specifically for any space and with almost any design. So, whether it’s a kitchen back splash, bathroom, fireplace or an individual tile for a loved one, they can be made bespoke to you, with your own meaningful message. A message that will be held eternally in earth and time.

tishoo Gallery is located in the historic village of Charlestown on Cornwall’s south coast. Just up the hill from the harbour, the gallery can be found in a beautiful courtyard of cottage gardens opposite the old Methodist Chapel. As well as fabulous art, there’s also a fantastic selection of home accessories and giftware, all designed and made in the UK. We take a closer look at some of the artists whose work is featured in the gallery. Artwork by David Axtell and Kit Johns sits alongside glassware by Margaret Johnson and jewellery by Julie Fountain. Painter David Axtell captures life on Cornwall’s beaches in his stunning oil paintings depicting family scenes and ocean moments. David has been an illustrator for over 15 years and in that time has worked for a variety of publishers including: Random House, Harper Collins and Macmillan. Also a painter, Kit Johns brings a fresh and contemporary twist to Cornish landscape art from his studio on The Lizard. His work explores the wild and untamed nature of Cornwall’s landscape, using a variety of techniques and mediums such as canvas, paper and wood. Designer Margaret Johnson uses an extraordinary technique involving straw silk fibres to create her beautiful glass bowls, vases and wall art. Each is delicately finished with precious metal leaf. aving studied fine art and sculpture and taught for a number of years, she now works from her studio in Bude. Similarly, Julie Fountain, founder of Beach Art Glass, creates stunning and unique jewellery inspired by the ocean. Her delicate glass beads are made using a flamework technique, where colourful Italian glass rods are melted down and then shaped in flames to produce intricate and beautiful jewellery. Owners Liz and Paul showcase a wonderful array of artwork in their colourful and inviting gallery. The artists before mentioned are just a small excerpt from the medley of creators and makers whose work is on display. So, make sure to tie in an amble around the picturesque port of Charlestown with a visit to this beautiful gallery, and discover the talents of these innovative artists.

he incredible beauty of Cornwall’s coastline draws millions of people to the Duchy every year, enchanted by its laid-back lifestyle, miles of sandy beaches, and picturesque villages. One thing many of us don’t factor into our holiday, however, is the unfortunate possibility of having a serious accident. But when accidents happen, the quick response of Cornwall Air Ambulance can make all the difference. In the city, you may only ever be a matter of minutes from a hospital emergency department by road; in many parts of Cornwall on the other hand, you could be more than an hour from the nearest major trauma centre. This is what makes the work of the Cornwall Air Ambulance and its crew so important to Cornwall’s visitors. Steve Garvey, who leads the team of Cornwall Air Ambulance paramedics, tells us Our first ever mission was more than 30 years ago. Since then, we’ve carried out thousands of missions to seriously sick and injured holidaymakers.” As a charity, Cornwall Air Ambulance relies on outside support to carry on providing the quick response necessary in trauma situations. The charity’s helicopter routinely bypasses our county’s congested, twisty roads, flying

S
peaking with KinetIQue Jewellery co-owners Jason and Elaine Foreman, it’s clear that they know their stuff and there isn’t a question they can’t answer. We ask what the difference is between a real diamond and an IQ Diamond. They explain: “Optically, they are identical, however the IQ Diamond is physically tougher than diamond. What’s more, visually, it compares to a type IIa diamond like the ohinoor The iamond is the first hybrid diamond that tests positive for diamond.”
Impressive, but what about the pricing? “The IQ Diamond is far more affordable. It’s tougher and brighter, yet KinetIQue Jewellery is not constrained by the diamond pricing index, which means we can deliver a higher quality product, at a fair price.”
Is your jewellery just available in the UK? “It’s actually available all over the world – there’s no limit to where we can deliver, so no matter the occasion, our clients can trust in our premium jewellery, excellent customer service and award-winning reputation to exceed expectations.”
Diamonds often carry a stigma surrounding how they are sourced. How would you describe your ethos? “We focus on ethics, ensuring we operate in an environmentally responsible and ecofriendly fashion, using sustainable and fair trade precious metals.
“The IQ Diamond contains pure man-made diamond and the bi-product of this process is simply water. It uses less than 1% of the energy to create it, compared to mining diamonds.”
Are they available for bespoke jewellery pieces? “All of our pieces have a unique touch and we tailor them to each of our clients’ individual requirements and taste. Their jewellery can be custom designed and personalised to create something that’s unique and truly special.” So there it is! The IQ Diamond is fast becoming the world’s trending diamond, attracting a discerning global clientele that wants to distance itself from the environmentally unfriendly and often morally di cult market of natural diamonds. And with their excellent customer service record, it’s no wonder KinetIQue has been awarded The Gold Trusted Service Award 2018 by FEEFO! Ethical, luxurious and eco-friendly, the team at KinetIQue Jewellery are proud to say that their jewellery is truly kind, not mined.

He refers to this as “designing with a rubber, rather than a pencil” – the notion of stripping it back to create something less incongruous, embracing the natural environment and letting the landscape speak for itself. As Matt explains, particularly in coastal regions like Cornwall, you have to follow this lead in choice of planting. “In every project, you pick plants that fit the climate, working within the demands of the location and environment. Cornwall has a warmer climate compared to many parts of the UK, but a wetter one too, so the palette of plants is very different. t’s subtropical, verdant, and larger than life; full of form and structure.” Matt continues: “Any designer should embrace where they’re working, using plants that will thrive. I love coastal gardens – they demand careful thought and can be problematic. Actually, it’s easier to have a tricky site, as it naturally limits the options.” Essentially, you plant based on what is appropriate for the site itself. f you’re inspired to redesign your own garden, Matt gives us some invaluable tips. “Time spent in the garden is important, getting to grips with the space, learning about its characteristics before making wholesale change. I really believe that the landscape tells you what’s best you ust need to take some time to let it do that ork with the space, don’t impress upon it. y ob is to help you realise that potential.”

W
hile we’re forever waxing lyrical on Cornwall’s appeal based on cream teas, surfing and ‘getting away from it all’, there’s another, intriguing side to our beloved uchy. Alongside the flourishing tourist trade a more unexpected sector of business is thriving, with Cornwall increasingly making a contribution to the country’s hightech developments in aircraft, drones and satellites, attracting a growing community of techies and investors who are innovating in the space and aerospace sectors. “Cornwall Airport Newquay will surprise people,” says James Fairbairn at Aerospace Cornwall. “As well as frequent national and international flights and a growing Aerohub enterprise one, the ’s first paceport could be announced here this summer for small satellite launch and space tourism. With its enormous runway, the airport is also the testing ground for the Bloodhound C, a car powered by a et and a rocket that will attempt to go supersonic to speeds over 1000mph in 2019.” oonhilly arth tation on the i ard, which recently relayed Tim Peake’s space adventures to schools, has attracted a £24m investment from billionaire Peter Hargreaves. He was no doubt impressed by
Goonhilly’s recent £8.4m contract with the uropean pace Agency to upgrade its m antenna to expand satellite and deepspace communications. As tourists lay back and stare into the open blue skies from their deckchairs, the race for Cornish business space should come as no surprise, as James explains. “Aerospace Cornwall is co-ordinating inward investment in these sectors and making research and development funding available. The airspace above Cornwall is some of the least populated in the UK, which makes it perfect for test flights and launches. Contemporary innovators are flourishing. Falmouth University, for example, has created aunchpad, an incubator programme developing high-tech, success-driven startups that work alongside strategic partners to develop market led solutions. imilarly the rone ab research group led by r aren Anderson at The University of Exeter Cornwall undertakes cutting edge scientific research, flying drones in order to understand how landscapes are created. ike them, you may never look at open space in Cornwall in quite the same way again!

THE ROAD
y r e v o c e r o t We catch up with Gerri Creedon, the inspiring personality behind Regain Recovery.
G
DID YOU KNOW? In the last year, more than 40 people have been through the Regain Recovery programme and are maintaining their recovery still. This includes them retaining their relationships and careers.
erri tells us: “People often ask me where my passion for supporting people to make positive changes in their lives comes from, especially as I had a successful career working in the oil industry. My own struggle with alcohol over the years led me to realise that I had to make significant changes in my life. y years struggling with alcohol were arguably the most painful of my adult life, however somewhere deep inside I knew there was hope, and experience shows me now that I was right.” Gerri explains how recovery took her on a journey of self-discovery, where she regained her self-esteem and loving relationships. “Following my own treatment I completed a post-graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and I am a qualified Therapist. ’ve worked in private drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation settings and other agencies that specialise in substance misuse, both in the community as well as the NHS. I also had a very busy private counselling practice.” ut, erri tells us, this still wasn’t enough, and the desire to help more people experience the positive changes that she went through kept pushing her forward. Thus egain ecovery was born. erri set up egain ecovery in six acres of tranquil land in the heart of north Devon. “My vision was to create a safe, warm and friendly environment
where individuals struggling with substance use could access treatment and recover, but it had to be somewhere ’d be happy to go myself. My own treatment was very effective for me, but it did not provide the support for my loved ones that they needed. Partners and loved ones have their own needs on the recovery journey, so I was determined to cover the needs of everyone involved.” Gerri is passionate and committed to providing an effective, excellent service to all clients and their families. “My aim is to empower people approaching recovery, enabling them to help themselves and learn as much as possible about substance use and the underlying issues associated with it. With knowledge comes power, and understanding the cause and effect of substance use can be a powerful tool.” Gerri continues: “I am excited to share my recovery journey with anyone struggling to regain control of their own issues. I know how important it is for people to see that success is possible, and this is a key feature of the egain ecovery programme.
