Welcome Living

to the October issue of Devon

s we say a fond farewell to summer and the nights begin to draw in, Devon is starting to don its autumn colours. Low-lying morning mists give the countryside an almost ethereal quality, giving way to the glorious russets and browns that are synonymous with Devon’s woodlands and moors at this time of year. Wood burners are being lit and winter woolies are making a re-appearance and, if you’re anything like me, thoughts are turning to food – there’s nothing like an autumn walk to work up an appetite. Fortunately, I’ve been able to get plenty of culinary inspiration by reading our Media Assistant, Bethany Allen’s cover feature this month. From page 20, Bethany reflects on some of this summer’s finest foodie festivals as well as giving us the low down on what’s to come over the next few months. If you’re looking to tie the knot in our wonderful county then turn to page 47 where you’ll find our inaugural Weddings Supplement, the ultimate guide to weddings in Devon. From dream wedding venues to ideas for the big day, including photography, cakes and outfit ideas, let us do the hard work for you in searching out those little things that will make your big day one to remember forever. Last month we were lucky enough to spend a few days on the Isles of Scilly, just off the Cornish coast. With flights from Exeter airport taking just an hour, it’s the perfect island paradise for a weekend away or indeed a honeymoon! Turn to page 38 to read the full review of our island adventure. Until next month...happy reading!

Coming to The Cotton Tree Boutique this autumn

Skunkfunk is an ethical clothing brand that designs sustainable garments for independent, fun women with an urban style. The autumn collection is inspired by the ancient art of origami and the fabrics are filled with beautiful paper birds and Jacquard designs, with each piece carefully designed from scratch in the heart of the Basque country. All garments are made using sustainable fabrics, natural fibres and organic cotton, which is what drew owner Susan to the brand. She tells us: “One of the reasons we at The Cotton Tree have decided to stock this inspiring brand is their Fair Trade values; Skunkfunk have respect for people and the planet and make every effort to make their

business ethical, even in the methods they use to package their goods and transport them.” For more information call 01822 735222

Is getting permanent eyebrows worth it? Many people ask themselves or others if permanent makeup is worth the investment and the answer is that it’s certainly an option worth considering. It accommodates those who lack the skill of pencilling in their own brows as well as those who are allergic to makeup products, individuals with busy schedules, and for cancer survivors. Eyebrows frame and define the face, and when applied correctly the results speak for themselves. So, why get permanent eyebrows? In most cases it comes down to saving time and money on makeup with permanent eyebrow tattoos, thereby saving a considerable amount of money and time out of your day. Plus, you don’t have to worry about your eyebrows smudging or fading, during swimming, exercising, taking showers or sleeping. The last rush to get things organised for the new school year can make it hard to find time for ourselves, but as life begins to slow down with the turn of autumn, it’s the perfect time to unwind with these two wellbeing methods, from Gerri, founder of Regain Recovery.

The tie is dead – long live the tie!

“Focus on one thing at a time. Multi-tasking has been shown to increase stress, and we actually end up getting less done. Try fully engaging each act of daily life and see for yourself how much more you enjoy the little things!” The second tip is to cut back on drinking. Gerri explains: “Even a small amount of alcohol interferes with sleep patterns, increasing stress and making us wake up groggy. So, for an energy boost, try taking a break from alcohol.” For more information call 01237 405200

The tie is not dead yet! Although no longer worn as a formality to work, the tie has been reborn and adopted by young men and women as a must-have fashion accessory. Every evening in trendy bars, restaurants and clubs in towns and cities all over the country there is a growing number of ties being worn on the necks of the fashion conscious. Women are adopting an androgynous look first seen in the 1920’s and the tie is making a real comeback with fashion houses all over the world. The trend for men is towards a small number of beautifully handmade ties in silks, cottons and linens. So, the tie has been released from the confines of corporate conformity and is instead a trendy fashion statement – long live the tie. All you need to know about

oyster shucking!

Whether you’re an old hand or new to oyster shucking, head down to Falmouth this October for the annual Oyster Festival where you can indulge in the fine art of oyster shucking and enjoy live music, cooking lessons and festivities, all washed down with a glass or two of champagne or some traditional Cornish cider. Oysters are a well-known aphrodisiac, so why not make a romantic gesture and treat your loved one to a luxury stay at The Oceanic Suite Hotel – Cornwall’s luxury getaway for grown-ups. With just five designer suites offering a unique blend of five-star hotel facilities and stylish apartment living, The Oceanic is the perfect accompaniment to a weekend of oyster indulgence.

To add a bit of extra fizz, opt for the romantic room makeover where your suite will be transformed with scattered rose petals on the bed, a bottle of awardwinning Cornish bubbly, chocolate-dipped strawberries and a special Molton Brown gift set – all for just £75 extra. Recently voted one of the UK’s most romantic hotels, The Oceanic enjoys stunning views over the harbour and is just a short stroll from Events Square and the various bars, restaurants and oyster related activities. However, if you don’t like oysters, don’t despair – The Oceanic is open all year round and is the ideal choice for a mini break, a special birthday or an anniversary treat!

Get the whole

clan together! Whether it’s for a special occasion, or simply because you feel like getting the whole family together, a multigenerational holiday can be a lot of fun. Toad Hall Cottages have a wide range of larger properties throughout Devon perfect for a family get together. Booking a house big enough to accommodate everyone can often work out cheaper, and you get many added bonuses such as games rooms, swimming pools, multiple bathrooms, larger gardens and, of course, plenty of space in which to relax and enjoy your time together. Some of the Toad Hall team’s favourite properties include beautiful Higher Sutton, a large 17th century farmhouse near Thurlestone, south Devon, which boasts a well-equipped games room as well as farm animals to keep the kids happy. There’s also a huge open-plan kitchen that’s perfect for cooking up a feast! And then there’s Waterside, with its own private beach and mooring just a stone’s throw from Salcombe! hrough this feature we explore the best of Devon’s foodie scene, with a quick fire round up of all the mouthwatering food festivals that have taken place over the summer and a look forward to what’s in store for the coming months. If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that good food has the ability to tantalise our tastebuds and send us into a state of food induced bliss, or as my family fondly refers to it – a food coma. From county shows to food carnivals and everything inbetween, peruse these pages at your leisure and discover Devon’s delectable foodie feasts, spice bonanzas and spectacular spirits. On 11th August we witnessed a culmination of the world’s finest gins at The Great British Gin Festival in Exeter. This event is an unforgettable experience for all lovers of Britain’s longstanding favourite tipple. Upon arrival guests receive a gin glass and gin bible to guide them through the tasting experience, where you can choose from over 100 different international gins! Entertainment includes cocktail demos, live performances and talks creating a sophisticated festival atmosphere, accompanied by a truly sophisticated tipple. (www.ginfestivalsuk.com)

| COVER FEATURE Devon Fire And Spice Festival took place a week later on the 18th and 19th August at Powderham Castle, providing visitors with a flurry of flavours and proving that seasoning really is a chef’s best friend. Set between the castle ramparts and Exe estuary, this fiery weekend focuses on hot sauces, spice rubs, chilli plants, barbeques and smokers. Organiser Miles Halton tells us: “It’s not just about the heat of the chillies or being able to grill a sausage outside, it’s the flavour that counts.” This fantastic event combines the beautiful setting of Powderham Castle with live music, local beers, amazing street food, cooking demonstrations, and an exhibition by the South Devon Chilli Farm. DISCOVER MORE IF YOU’RE INTO SEAFOOD Keep an eye out for the Plymouth Seafood Festival (this year’s took place on 15th and 16th September), a celebration of high quality locally sourced and sustainably caught seafood.

We welcomed the 1st September with the UK Rum Festival held in The Great Hall at the University of Exeter. Featuring white rum, dark rum, gold rum and flavours of rum you’ve never even heard of, cocktail enthusiasts and spirit sippers enjoyed a rum tasting session, street food vendors and a Tiki Room Experience where they were treated to a Tiki mug and cocktail as well as being guided through the renowned history of Tiki. Then on the 2nd September, Clovelly hosted its Lobster And Crab Festival, giving visitors the chance to choose from a variety of crab and lobster dishes cooked on the quay or at the Red Lion Harbour Restaurant. Live music and cooking demonstrations kept visitors entertained as well as a selection of local food, beer and craft stalls. The event takes place in aid of the National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow, and during the festival the charity exhibits baby lobsters before releasing them into the sea at the beginning and end of the day. (www.nationallobsterhatchery.co.uk) Abbfest returned to Isaac’s Field in Ipplepen on the 21st and 23rd September. Nestled within stunning countryside, Abbfest has it all – craft beer, mouth-watering food and entertaining music. We particularly loved the Meat59 (www.meat59.com) street food stall, allowing visitors to bite into a homemade burger – laden with relish and lovingly pressed between freshly baked bread, there really is nothing better! Celebrating the very best of Devon’s culinary offerings as well as featuring talented and exciting chefs, the event also included a children’s cookathon on the Sunday. (www.abbfest.org) EXPERIENCE

DISCOVER MORE ALSO IN SEPTEMBER Ben’s Farm Shop showcased the South Devon Chilli Farm’s products in its stores in Staverton, Totnes, Exeter and Yealmpton on 16th September. (www.bensfarmshop.co.uk)

Nourish Festival also took part on 1st September. Set in the heart of Bovey Tracey, it’s a weekend of events designed to feed the body, the mind and the senses, filling the town with some of the best producers of food, drink and craft in the south west. Over 60 food and drink stands lined the length of Fore Street, all enjoyed alongside the outstanding programme of classical music that Nourish provides. (www.nourishfestival.org)

Now to explore the upcoming foodie feasts… Commencing with the Taste of Teign event, which takes place from 22nd until 30th September, this year, Taste of Teign joins forces with the town’s first ever Sea Shanty Festival. Picture this: a pint of craft beer or cider, a steaming bowl of mussels from the Teign and the evocative sound of Sea Shanties to warm the cockles of your heart. Last year this growing festival attracted national attention and this year, by combining great food, drink, and now with music thrown into the recipe, the menu for 2018 looks like it’s going to be even more mouth-watering. (www.tasteoftheteign.org.uk)

As we head into autumn, the comfort of good food becomes even more irresistible, so make sure to visit the Powderham Food Festival from 6th until 7th October to satisfy all your foodie desires. Like the Devon Fire and Spice Festival, Powderham Food Festival is set against the backdrop of Powderham Castle and the two-day autumnal foodie event is set to be bigger and better than ever before. Devon Broadcaster, Judi Spiers will be hosting the cookery theatre across the weekend introducing a great line-up of popular chefs and over 170 food, arts and crafts exhibitors will line the grounds of the castle, providing all things edible, drinkable and delectable. (www.powderhamfoodfestival.com) Combining great food for a great cause, head to the Family Food Fair at the Donkey Sanctuary on 13th October. One for foodies and families alike, the event showcases some of the best food, drink and talent our region has to offer. Food is Fun will be on hand to entertain (and educate) little ones with cooking activities. And you certainly won’t go hungry, with freshly prepared, wholesome dishes also provided in the sanctuary’s new restaurant – The Kitchen. (www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk/events)

Next on the line up we have Dartmouth Food Festival taking place from 19th until 21st October, described by The Telegraph as “a heady mix of celebrity chefs, parties, food markets, tasting shacks and demonstrations.” The annual event is located in the picturesque harbour town of Dartmouth and includes popular chef’s demonstrations and ‘Eat Your Words’ seminars, as well as pop-up restaurant events such as those at Café Alfresco (www.cafealfresco. co.uk). The ‘Eat Your Words’ seminars allow you to join food experts, writers and chefs as they discuss new ideas and fresh challenges from the world of food and drink. (www.dartmouthfoodfestival.com) Clovelly Herring Festival follows on 18th November. The fishing village once depended on the harvest of herring but sadly, the days of massive catches are long gone. However, the village continues to celebrate and promote this tasty, nutritious fish and during the festival, you can expect talks from maritime and historian writer Mile Smylie who will be transforming herring into delicate tasting kippers in his smokehouse. What better way to commemorate the lead up to Christmas than to experience Exeter’s first ever chocolate festival on 25th November? Organised by Nicola Knight, Exeter Chocolate Festival celebrates the artisan chocolate makers who have been popping up across the country. Nicola tells us: “I’m excited to introduce the south west to the world of craft chocolate.” The programme will include chocolate tasting sessions, a cacao-ceremony, talks and chocolate making demonstrations with Jim Fisher from the Exeter Cookery School. (www.exeterchocolatefestival.co.uk) Finally, December brings with it the promise of a culmination of foodie feasts, markets and food stalls during the tantalizing lead up to Christmas and the Buckfast Abbey Christmas Food And Craft Fair on 1st and 2nd December is set to be a spectacular one! (www.buckfast.org.uk) So there you have it, a delicious round up of all the most delectable foodie feasts that we’ve witnessed this summer and a mouth-watering taste of what’s to come over the next few months. Hopefully that will be enough to keep you satisfied and leave you wanting more when the food festival season approaches again next year. Until then, happy eating!

YOUR DREAM

KITCHEN

Introducing kitchen makeover company Dream Doors, providing a completely new look in days.

F

or many of us, the kitchen is the heart of the home; it’s where our families congregate at the beginning and end of the day, where numerous cups of tea are made and stories told and often, it’s the deal-breaker when buying a property. An attractive kitchen adds masses of value to your property, however a complete kitchen re-fit can become an extremely timeconsuming, not to mention costly, process. That’s where Dream Doors comes in. It’s the biggest national kitchen facelift company in the UK and luckily for you, there's a showroom in Exeter. Dream Doors provide you with the chance to completely transform your home with minimal mess and cost. Rather than gutting and re-building, the company provides a makeover service, simply changing the doors, tiles and worktops of your kitchen and thereby utterly revamping it without the rigmarole of a whole re-fit. We hear from Exeter showroom owner, Mike MaughanBrown, who tells us: “Replacing the doors and worktops of a kitchen for a fraction of the price is an incredibly sought after service, which many don’t even know exists!” The cost is not the only reason that a facelift is preferred by many customers, it also saves a lot of time; a new kitchen can take weeks to install but the Dream Doors service takes days. The business has been exceptionally busy since opening two years ago and has

well surpassed business plan projections, which isn’t surprising considering the incredibly high standard of finish that can be achieved. Mike continues: “When a customer approaches Dream Doors we provide them with as much information as possible so that they can form an idea of how they would like their kitchen to look. We have all doors made to measure, and of course we can also install additional units and change the layout of the kitchen.” The company offers a comprehensive service, including planning, sourcing appliances, installation and rubbish removal. On the other hand, there are some instances where a facelift is not practical and in those cases Dream Doors offers fully designed, cost effective complete kitchen installations. “We do as little or as much as you want,” says Mike. So, whatever you choose, Dream Doors will help transform your kitchen into a beautiful, homely space that suits your style.

LIGHTING MADE EASY

We hear how to light up your life this autumn from the team at Dusk Lighting.

ç MAIN Dare to be bold

A

s the daylight hours start to reduce and autumn creeps in, the need for good lighting in our homes becomes increasingly apparent. We hear from Dusk Lighting’s Business Development Manager, Jamie Moxey who tells us: “Here at Dusk Lighting, we pride ourselves on being able to source a wide range of lighting products at competitive prices. Primarily an online retail company, we sell an eclectic array of affordable lighting across the UK and internationally.” Based at Exeter Airport Business Park, the showroom boasts a representative selection of what the company offers on it’s website and the friendly and experienced team are always available to assist you with technical and style advice. For some, choosing lighting can be a daunting prospect – the vast number of products on the market combined with all the electrical jargon can make the process of finding the right lighting a little intimidating. Another misconception is that lighting is costly, and although in some cases this can be true, sometimes just a small addition can completely transform your space, without breaking the bank. So, what’s on trend? Jamie explains: “Concrete, clear glass and brushed nickel are the most popular and fashionable finishes appearing on the market and the combination of industrial

and vintage finishes has remained popular alongside Scandi and modern minimalist designs. Comparably we’ve seen a sharp fall in demand for copper finishes, crystal chandeliers and art deco designs. However, it’s not about following a trend – it’s about being different and achieving what you want, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box.” Jamie also strongly suggests that before visiting the showroom, you have a browse on the website to get a feel for the style and themes that will complement your interior design project. Additionally, it’s worth considering how to make the most of your space; is functionality the most important objective… or creating a cosy ambient mood, or both? Finally, it’s important to consider your budget and to try and stick to it – once you’ve considered these aspects it’s time to make full use of Dusk Lighting’s free advisory service to help find the perfect lighting solution for you.

uke Stone produce beautiful bespoke items for the home and garden from its workshop on the Lizard peninsula. The experienced team of professional stonemasons can create everything, from incredible kitchen worktops and vanities for the bathroom, to fireplaces, hearths and wonderful sculptures and are happy to deliver nationwide. The team at Duke Stone have a genuine passion for stone, with hundreds of granite and quartz slabs in stock, meaning you can choose the right piece to fit your project perfectly. One feature of natural stone is that each piece is unique, with its own texture, pattern and hue that can change fluidly in the light. Mixing stone with other natural material produces beautiful results, with subtle differences in texture and finish. What’s more, stone is naturally hardwearing, and heat resistant too! Indeed, natural stone is perfect if you’re looking for a real statement piece to complete a room, a fantastic example being a uniquely stunning handcrafted sink made from serpentine stone, found locally on the Lizard. In vogue at the moment, is the use of engineered stone for a sleek, contemporary look that’s completely versatile. Engineered stone is generally made up of more than 90% quartz, making it extraordinarily hardwearing and resilient. It’s also nonporous, so highly resistant to staining, and it’s available in a range of finishes, including

polished, suede, leathered and honed. All these qualities combine to make it the ideal surface for kitchen worktops and bathrooms. The Duke Stone range includes integrated sinks, which match the colour of your work surface with no seams and no overhangs! Impressively, Duke Stone is equally adept in enhancing cottages as they are period homes and commercial projects, so if you want to make a real statement in your home – be it contemporary or traditional – look out for the team at the Cornwall Home Improvement & Self Build Show on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October. Alternatively, if you can’t make it to the show, be sure to contact the office or, better still, pay a visit to the workshop at Cury Cross Lanes just outside Helston and speak to a member of the friendly and knowledgeable team about how you can incorporate one of a number of stunning stone materials into your dream home.

ocated in Honiton, Realwood Furniture has just expanded its offering of beautifully crafted wood furniture by opening a new showroom, bigger and better than ever before. We hear from Realwood Furniture owner, Clive Stanbury, who tells us: “The new showroom is only 50 yards away from our other showroom and includes an even bigger bed selection as well as armchairs and sofas, allowing us to expand our offering two-fold!” The exciting move means that Clive and his team of local craftsmen have more space to cultivate their emporium of furniture. Boasting the finest oak, pine and painted designs, the showroom is open seven days a week and displays numerous styles. And having been an established manufacturer and retailer for over 30 years, the Realwood team are experts in their field, carefully curating a selection of different styles and combinations of furniture and providing everything from full ranges to individual one-off pieces, with furniture available for every room. Whether your taste is traditional or contemporary, and whether you want to pick it up that day or have it made and delivered to your door, Realwood Furniture has your furnishing needs covered. And the pedigree

of design and finish produces furniture of unrivalled style, functionality and durability. Not to mention, the timber used is gathered from sustainable sources, minimising their carbon footprint but maintaining quality. Clive continues: “Our independent and personal delivery service completes our passion for customer satisfaction, and with thousands of satisfied customers under our belt we know what you expect and we’re proud to give it.” Plus, with generations of experience, Realwood’s team of local craftsmen can create bespoke furniture that’s designed to fit your exact requirements, meaning you needn’t let those awkward spaces go to waste! Will wood-burning stoves be banned? We get Faraday Stoves' expert opinion.

e can all appreciate the dancing flames and warmth of fire and there’s something inherent within us that responds to the flickering glow, after all it’s our oldest form of central heating and something that defines our humanity. However, there has been a lot of negative press recently regarding wood burners and misleading headlines that wood-burning stoves may be banned. Graham Terry of Faraday Stoves says the stove industry's main regulatory body HETAS has stated that a ban isn’t going to happen; the government is simply concerned about air pollution and wants to reduce emissions from domestic wood burning. This will be achieved by ensuring that stoves produce very low harmful emissions and all new stoves are Eco-Design compliant by 2022. What does this mean for us then? Well, to do your bit for the environment it’s best to purchase an Eco Design-ready stove that is more environmentally friendly. However, if you already have a stove or use an open fire then here are some of Faraday Stove’s top tips to help reduce your impact on the environment. Graham explains: “Make sure to burn wood that has been properly dried and ensure the moisture content is less than 20%, or buy fuel with

the ‘ready to burn’ logo on pre-packed logs and you’ll be set to reduce your emissions. Burning damp wood produces more smoke, burns slower and produces less heat, making well-seasoned dry wood a more efficient option all round. Don’t let your stove slumber, always burn with some flame. Slumbering not only leads to the production of noxious smoke, it also causes tar and creosote to settle in the chimney which can lead to chimney fires. Keeping your chimney clean is just as important as keeping your stove clean so for optimum results, make sure to get it serviced regularly and the chimney swept at least twice a year." And finally, Graham tells us: “When replacing older stoves make sure to look for more efficient ones, ideally those that have emissions meeting the new Eco Design standards.” Getting a more efficient stove means you’ll be able to help reduce emissions and do your bit for the environment too.

Discovering the enchanting archipelago of the Isles of Scilly.

or those with busy lives trying to arrange a weekend away and find a date that suits family, work and animals can be a challenge. Add to the mix the unpredictable nature of the great British weather and the challenge becomes very real. Had someone told me we could make this happen, with hotter weather than the Mediterranean, I’d have answered: “Yeah right! And England will win their quarter-final against Sweden in the World Cup!” They did and so did we, but for us that was only the start of an amazing adventure. With the stars aligned and all children, dogs, cats and horses accounted for we set off in the early part of this summer on an amazing Scilly adventure. Flying to the Scillies on the Skybus from Land's End is, in my view, the only way to travel to the islands. As you leave the mainland behind, with the Longships lighthouse in the distance, each passing second of the short 15 minute flight sees your worries and stresses just slip away. Shoulders drop, frowns disappear and a

sense of peace and tranquillity takes hold as St Mary’s approaches. As if by magic the whole world changes and becomes a much better place. On arrival we are collected from the airport by the Tresco Shuttle team who transfer us to St Mary’s quay and our boat transfer to Bryher. There’s nothing quite like the sights, sounds and smell of the quayside to make you feel ‘at home’ on Scilly – salty air, azure blue skies reflected in clear waters and the bustle of boatmen helping visitors board the off-island launches. After a short trip across the water we arrive at our home for the weekend – the awardwinning Hell Bay Hotel, a private oasis, set in an idyllic cove overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. We are shown to a lovely suite, with our own secluded patio on which to relax and soak up Scilly. Once unpacked, with tummies rumbling, we set of in search of lunch. We have heard that Bryher-based Island Fish not only serves the freshest catch but that proprietor, and Scillonian, Amanda Pender has a great story to tell.

Meeting Amanda, and listening to her reflections on her life on Scilly really resonates with me. A self-confessed, mid-life crisis saw her leave Islands Partnership, Scilly’s dedicated marketing and PR organisation and, with brother Mark, start Island Fish from the conservatory in her house. It’s a compelling story of passion and perseverance involving a Scillonian family who, for three generations, have followed in the footsteps of their ancestors’ proud fishing tradition. For visitors, life on Scilly appears idyllic, but there’s a certain resilience required to survive island living and the Pender’s story depicts this perfectly. Amanda tells us that fishing has always been part of family life. Her father Mike, brother Mark and now her own 18 year old son Shamus bring the catch of the day back to Bryher, where it is cleaned and prepared for customers at the newly built shop and fishworks that opened in April this year. Island Fish can be found just up the track from the quay and, like everything on the island, is easy to find as Bryher has an area of just 330 acres.

Offering an eat in or takeaway menu, my choice of lobster, served with potato wedges and coleslaw lunch is a steal at only £10 and both this and my wife’s crab quiche are to die for. Both dishes are part of an extensive selection of fish, and it’s award-winning to boot! A stroll around the island follows, much needed to work off our splendid lunch.

DISCOVER MORE Walk Scilly Long Weekend 11th - 15th October Autumn is the perfect time of year to experience the islands. The fifth Walk Scilly Weekend is bigger and better than ever, with 24 walks taking place across eight islands, including, for the first time, some special walks with walking artists. Tickets are now on sale. www.visitislesofscilly.com/walkscilly

As often happens with childfree weekend getaways our time mostly revolves around food and so, after an afternoon exploring, we end our first day on Bryher with a fish and chip supper at the Fraggle Rock Bar. After a wonderful night’s sleep, induced by all that fresh air and the sound of the ocean, we breakfast in the hotel (I wasn’t joking about the food!) before heading out for a day on Tresco. We have always wanted to visit the Tresco Abbey Garden and were intrigued as to what we would find. We weren’t disappointed – the garden is stunning, a sub-tropical gem, home to thousands of exotic plants from around the world. Built in the 19th century around the ruins of a Benedictine abbey, a meander around the garden reveals David Wynne’s magnificent ‘Children’ sculpture that rises majestically behind a border of vibrant Agapanthus. The Abbey Garden just keeps on giving at every turn and the unique Valhalla museum, with its 30 figureheads from Scillies’ shipwrecks honour the final century of sailing tradition dating back some 3,000 years, is a fitting end to our garden tour.

And you guessed… it’s lunchtime again! And what a lunch it is, declared to be: “one of the best ever” by my wife. Ruin Beach Café has quite possibly one of the most idyllic locations – the sand is golden and the water is the clearest blue. Our vegetarian sharing platter and succulent pan-fried fish are enjoyed overlooking this exquisitely beautiful and peaceful bay. Walking off lunch takes us to the north end of Tresco and a visit to the ruins of King Charles’ Castle before completing the six-mile walk that circumvents the entire island.

"The best sharing plate ever!' at Ruin Beach Café

After a happy day exploring we return to Hell Bay Hotel sun kissed and happy. The weather has been amazing for our trip and has transformed Scilly into what could easily be mistaken for tropical islands. It’s warm enough for us to dine outside and we are blessed with a romantic sunset to accompany our delicious supper. Sunday sees us divide and conquer. My wife heads off to enjoy a relaxing treatment at the hotel while I pay a visit to Bryher’s shop and Post Office – packed full of produce they offer an invaluable delivery service for self-catering visitors, bringing everything you need for your stay direct to your holiday home door. Next stop for me is Hillside Farm where I am warmly greeted by owners Ruth and Graham who take me on a tour of their working farm. The spring and summer

months see them harvesting vegetable, salad and soft fruit crops that are sold from their roadside stall. They also raise a herd of North Devon cattle and British Saddleback pigs that supply the island with rare breed, free-range pork and beef, and are another example of the entrepreneurial spirit that makes the island’s businesses unique. As our final day draws to a close, and we prepare for our return to the mainland in the morning, we both comment on how our visit has been one of sheer relaxation. The Scilly way of life has a different pace to the mainland – one that perhaps we should all adopt in order to take in the finer in things in life and all that Cornwall and its unique islands have to offer. If you’ve never visited, book soon – you won’t regret it!

Holiday home luxury

ocated less than five-miles away from the largest town in north Devon, Barnstaple, Tarka Holiday Park is nestled within tranquil grounds and is ideally situated just minutes from the fun activities on Devon’s north coast. It’s not surprising that people dream of owning a holiday home in this area and now you no longer have to imagine how fantastic it would be to have keys to your very own slice of Devon; Tarka Holiday Park allows you to achieve your dreams with its top of the range holiday homes. Over £1 million has been invested in developing the holiday park over the past few years, resulting in a beautifully landscaped holiday retreat where holiday home owners can enjoy stays for 11 ½ months of the year. Tarka’s unique atmosphere of serenity and seclusion is perfect for discerning holiday home owners where peace and tranquillity is high on the holiday wish list. Indeed, nestled in such a beautiful, natural setting, Tarka is the perfect antidote to the everyday stresses of modern life. We did a little digging and found this review from one happy customer: “We found it a most relaxing and friendly park, and the overall ambiance was quiet and peaceful, not to mention very dog friendly!” On offer is an enviable lifestyle, just a stone’s throw from some of the region’s most celebrated beaches and countryside. Or, you can easily access the nearby Tarka Trail, a figure of eight walking and cycling path

through rolling hills and wild moors. Plus, the breathtaking Exmoor National Park is only a half-hour’s drive from this holiday paradise. So, is owning a holiday home at Tarka just a privilege for the well off? Certainly not! Tarka is part of one of the country’s most successful park groups and consequently, has a vast amount of experience in making holiday home ownership a reality for everyone. So, why not pay the park a visit and let the team show you the benefits of holiday home ownership in this stunning area of Devon?

ast issue, we took a look at Angies boutique, a fantastic store on the high street in Budleigh Salterton that brings everything back to the experience of shopping, rather than the act of purchasing itself, which we found somewhat refreshing in today’s world of impersonal online and department store retail. Owner Jane Levingston, who last month told us how she aims to create a bespoke form of shopping – the chance to escape the frenzy of everyday life in favour of a more civilised haven – invited us to take a tour and while we were there, we thought we’d handpick some of our favourite brands in order to give you an idea of what you can expect next time you’re shopping in the area!

Monari, for those who know what suits them! Toni, an expert in creating top-quality trousers that fit perfectly è RIGHT

Stylish yet comfortable, by Adesso

DID YOU KNOW? Angies will be hosting a fashion show this autumn at East Devon Golf Club, in conjunction with the Golf Pro Shop, with the aim of raising money for Prostate Cancer Charity and the Bramble Ward Trust Fund at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. Tickets are available from September!

First up, we have Adesso. Part of a wellestablished, family run business with more than four decades’ experience in the footwear industry, Adesso’s designers forever have their ears to the ground, producing shoes that fashionistas are really looking for. Combining style and just the right amount of quirkiness, along with the utmost comfort, Jane loves Adesso’s footwear and we’re certain you will too! Another firm favourite of Jane’s is ERFO. This German brand makes stylish blouses and shirts in high-quality cotton, linen and mixed fabrics. Cut to fit the body beautifully,

ERFO designs easyto-wear shapes with modern styling at the forefront of each and every piece. No wonder they prove so popular at Angies! Another top German brand – and indeed one that’s impossible to ignore – is Just White. Feminine, high-quality and utterly designer, Just White is one of the leaders in designing blouses and tops for all occasions, whether you’re pairing them with jeans for a casual look, or adding style and sophistication to a more formal outfit. Jane tells us that she meets a lot of people who already know what suits them. If this sounds like you, you may well love the Angies offering of Monari clothing. An awardwinning Italian brand demonstrating an innate passion for beautiful attire, Monari brings flair to the contemporary knitwear market, perfect if you’re starting to sort your winter wardrobe! Winter is probably the time we most want to feel relaxed and cosy, whether we’re out and about or snuggled on the sofa. Fashion brand Toni is renowned for its superb fits, high quality and expertise in style. The criterion that Toni had to meet to develop the new Relaxed range was that each piece be top quality, guaranteed to fit and easy to wear, and it’s fair to say the team of designers have exceeded all expectations.

The only problem we foresee is that they won’t be on the shelves for long! Indeed, the Angies team absolutely loves Toni, stocking a plethora of the latest pieces, and it’s easy to see why. According to the website, Toni is the absolute expert in the production of women’s trousers, proving a firm favourite for nearly 50 years with those looking for top-quality ladies’ trousers that fit perfectly. As autumn and winter begin to creep in, it’s absolutely vital we have the right footwear to stand up to the test of Devon’s worst weather. This is why Angies stock Van Dal shoes. With more than a century of skill and craftsmanship going into every pair, it’s no surprise that more than half a million pairs are made each year. Stylish and hardwearing, Van Dal expertly bridges the gap between winter comfort and seasonal style, so they’re definitely worth checking out next time you pay Angies a visit!

IS YOUR HEART

RACING?

We get to the heart of the problem with help from the experts at Nuffield Health.

T

he team of experts at Nuffield Health, Exeter Hospital, are working hard to raise awareness of the symptoms of an irregular heartbeat, known as arrhythmia, and what to do if you suspect you or someone you care about is at risk. These are some signs and symptoms to look out for: a fluttering in your chest; a racing heartbeat (tachychardia); a slow heartbeat (bradycardia); chest pain; shortness of breath; lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting or near-fainting. These symptoms are relatively common and can simply be caused by stress levels or disorders like dehydration and anaemia, but it could be worth getting your heart checked by a GP or cardiologist to make sure that there isn’t a more serious underlying cause. And if you’re worried about your heart, there’s no need to wait; Nuffield Health, Exeter Hospital provides rapid, convenient and high-quality treatment and is a unique collaboration formed by leading cardiologists to offer the latest techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions. Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Matthew Lovell explains why the electrics of the heart can go wrong: “There are many reasons why electrical signalling through the heart can go wrong. These include issues with the heart’s natural pacemaker, conduction problems or damage to the heart muscle, which blocks the electrical signal to certain parts of the heart wall. Malfunction of the nervous system can also lead to problems.” Therefore, it’s well worth having a check up if you’re experiencing any of the problems listed.

ç INSET Get rapid, convenient and high quality treatment at Nuffield Hospital

Director of Nuffield Health’s Exeter Hospital, Paul Taylor tells us: “People can be missing out on major events and activities in their later years because of waiting for medical tests and treatment. With no waiting lists at our hospital we’re able to help people get on with life as quickly as possible. Even if you don’t have private medical insurance you can access our care by paying for yourself.” Nuffield Health is a trading charity so it has no shareholders, any profits are reinvested back into its UK hospitals and gyms. It is one of the UK’s leading healthcare organisations and has been looking after people for more than 60 years, meaning you can literally trust your heart in their hands.

Indeed, as well as regional recognition, many of the Academicians are well known across the globe, including Alan Cotton, June Arnold, Laurel Keeley, Ray Balkwill, Wendy McBride and James Tatum. The exhibition is set to be opened by renowned actress and singer, Maria Friedman – a West End star, producer and three-times winner of the much-coveted Oliver Award – which is especially fitting with one of this year’s special features, ‘A Celebration of Women’. aggie Davies is best known for her vibrant use of colour; whether it’s in her cityscapes or representations of the natural world, her artwork incorporates a bold use of colour and shapes that stand out against the canvas. Here at Devon Living we particularly love her ‘Autumn Hare’ depiction, which sees a cantering hare boldly leap across the canvas in striking yellow and to a backdrop of deep autumnal oranges and reds. Growing up in the Worcestershire countryside, experiencing city life in Birmingham, and now living on the north Devon coast, Maggie has always enjoyed an intense relationship with her environment, and this is very much revealed in her artwork. In 2014 Maggie established Portland Art Gallery and Open Studio in Ilfracombe, just minutes from the picturesque harbour, which itself provides an on-going source of inspiration to her work. This informal and welcoming gallery provides Maggie with a studio space and an excellent gallery area in which to exhibit some of her own work alongside a carefully selected group of local artists. It also provides a great venue for creative workshops, talks and art based

children simply told, and the engaging and colourful book will be available towards the end of the year. Maggie’s highly individual style is instantly recognisable within the book and she particularly enjoys the challenge of commission work, where a client has very specific subject matter in mind but wants her unique approach to its representation. Maggie explains: “My paintings are a reflection of what I see, what I remember, what I feel and what I imagine.” Maggie has a free-spirited approach to painting, where colours and shapes dance across the canvas in an imaginative waltz across the page and into the artist’s mind. So, if you want to view Maggie’s paintings in person then make sure to visit the gallery and studio in Ilfracombe where you’ll be assured of a warm welcome.

social events, and a central information point for the now well-established Ilfracombe Art Trail, held in May each year and involving over 50 artists in 30 venues, and attracting over 400 people who follow the town based trail. Maggie has enjoyed successful exhibitions of her work in the UK since 2005, and more recently has been very well received in the USA, with paintings from the series entitled ‘Adventures in the City’ about which Maggie tells us: “Cities fascinate me. I relish the tricks that light, perspective, colour and construction play upon our senses.” And it’s this skewed perspective that Maggie captures within her artwork, for example in ‘City Lights’ Maggie’s use of colour suggests a cityscape viewed in darkness or low light; when the blurry form of buildings are synthetically lit with electric light, casting a murky haze of orange light pollution into the sky. In complete contrast to her paintings on canvas, Maggie is currently working on illustrations for a children’s book by Worcestershire based author Margaret Gardner called The Badgers of Briarwood. Crunch TIME

Dispelling the ‘yuck’ factor from edible insects, GreenBee Entomology founder, Heather, offers their delicious treats to HRH Prince Charles.

é ABOVE ì RIGHT

The insects Heather uses are an incredible source of protein, vitamins and minerals

or many, the thought of eating an insect or a bug is one that leaves them feeling squeamish, however, despite politely declining the tempting offer from the team at GreenBee Entomology, HRH Prince Charles was impressed and, dare we say it, even a little tempted! Greenbee Founder, Heather Gibbard, tells us: “He was a little taken aback when told there were whole crickets in the flapjacks. We think he’s been watching too much I’m a Celebrity!” Heather explains that edible insects are given an undeservedly negative image, but that they are packed with protein, vitamins and minerals. Heather’s thriving ‘bug’ farm in Devon offers customers access to British grown insects, which can be enjoyed in delicious treats or as ingredients to experiment with at home. Heather discovered entomophagy – the use of insects as food – when she tried her first edible insect seven years ago. “The chocolate covered crickets were pretty good, a bit like chocolate crispies. I went on to try chapulines (Mexican grasshoppers) in a taco and they tasted amazing, so I immediately ordered another one!” With a projected global population of nine billion in just a few short years, there is a definite need to start looking at traditional animal protein sources. “Our YumBugs range of products allows us to expand our protein sources and give access to delicious food that our ancestors and other cultures around the world have been enjoying for years.” According to the team at Greenbee, eating insects is also great for children, and their YumBug products have been developed with kids in mind, giving them a nutritious alternative to high sugar snacks. Heather adds: “In our trials, even fussy children and adults were able to over-ride the ‘yuck’ factor.” Even though the royal couple declined to try them on camera, Heather gave them

è INSET Royal couple come to Gate to Plate

some Pirate Island Flapjacks and some Rhubarb and Ginger Bread Butterflies. “Perhaps they tried them off camera in their helicopter home.” She continues: “Meeting them in person was a pleasure. They were warm and lovely to talk to, and we hope they enjoyed their hamper of local treats!” Having built a cyclic farming system that minimises waste and ensures sustainable products, Heather and co’s bug barn is highly energy efficient, feeding the insects on ‘wonky’ veg and off cut stalks, and will soon incorporate solar panels to make production even more green! “To round it all off, we only use compostable packaging to deliver your YumBug goodies!”
